The real horror of popular TV show Worm is Smugbug done in a Supercorp manner. We're not in Taylor's head, so the viewers don't get to see how Taylor looks at other women, but in Season 2 there's a scene where they let slip how much they care about each other and the fandom goes crazy. They give Foil and Parian a much more prominent role in the next season to get the fandom off their back, but they're as boring as ever and nobody pays attention to that pairing except for random straight guys who wander into the fandom to complain about people "making Taylor and Lisa gay." There's an entire other half of the fandom which does the Kid Win/Regent yaoi scenarios everyone else has been talking about and never interacts with the f/f portion except to talk about how Taylor is irredeemable for not liking Regent. There's also another half that ships Victoria/Dean and interacts with everyone else exclusively to express how smug they are about shipping canon.

You know, thinking back on Ward, I'm increasingly fond of Anelace for his place in the narrative not necessarily in spite of but because of his barely-there personality.

Victoria really said "in order to reclaim my agency and my body as a site of pleasure, I require a hot guy I can use as a human sex toy without the threat of emotional intimacy or having to consider his needs at all" and Anelace fits that perfectly. He is really just there, giving nothing, and I love that for Vic.

It's intensely relatable to me, honestly, as someone who has experienced sexual assault and has been through a similar process of reconnection. Anelace is in some ways the perfect cardboard cut out stand-in for that particular sexual fantasy. It's just not a fantasy that's as immediately obvious a trope as, say, the ravishing bad boy who liberates you from decision-making and obviates the shame of making socially 'wrong' ones.
