ok raoul does not actually jog back in. i was being too silly i fear. he just idles the car and locks + unlocks his phone a dozen times like "how long can giving back a big ugly stupid ring TAKE" until christine climbs back into the passenger seat with her dress so fully saturated with tears that it starts soaking into the car interior like what usually happens at the end of final lair.

BUT the cam was vampire in the opera's april 19 2015 partial matinee with andrey shkoldychenko, elena bakhtiyarova, and evgeniy zaytsev! and erik and christine do really just kind of do a turn-based face-petting standoff during the ring return. that part wasn't a joke i could never make light of that

I recently saw a gif of JOJ… erm, caressing Gina’s face during DJT. (And she looked like she was really into it and I don’t blame her one bit.) Are there any other instances where actors would do something a little different during that song?

To be honest, face caressing is quite common in 'Point of No Return'; I'd almost call it part of the required blocking.

I'm more curious how you saw a gif of John Owen-Jones with Gina Beck in that scene, since the only scenes that exist of them two together are 'Music of the Night' and 'Final Lair'. Perhaps you got Rachel Barrell or Celia Graham (both of whom have full videos of them performing with JOJ) confused with Gina Beck? Or you confused JOJ and David Shannon (who also performed with Gina Beck and has a somewhat similar look to JOJ).

Anyway, unique things that I assume are limited to just what the Phantom does and sticking solely to the original production... well, the most unique will always be Eiji Akutagawa full on stroking his crotch during that scene. Also of note is Franc D'Ambrosio, who does a lot in this scene, but whose most memorable moment is him moaning halfway through it. For reactions, I love both Brad Little and Earl Carpenter for acting so well with a hood on. Then there's Saulo Vasconcelos doing all the face stroking. Speaking of him, he also kneels down during the proposal part of that scene, an uncommon enough move that I gif'd all the actors I could find doing it. Her eyes aren't on Don Juan, or the performance; maybe she's trying to find Raoul with her eyes, but they aren't going up. Rather, they seem hazy and unfocused.

She could still be looking for her golden boy, but what I really think that is happening here is that she's trying her best not to give in. Even if she still thinks that this is Ubaldo (which I doubt), it is very obvious in this production that the direction wanted to show Christine's bond with the Ghost's music. Maybe she's projecting enough that, in her mind, she's singing with the Phantom; his music has seeped deep into her soul, making a rather bold claim on her. You're mine, it says, and Christine is struggling to fight against it because it has a point. Even if she doesn’t think that people can belong to each other, there's still a chunk of her heart that has been given to the Ghost. Or at least that's my take on the productions choice with Christine's acting.

Also, she horny.

Who are some Phantoms that weren’t principal Phantoms but were just as good if not better?

Oh, let's see... so there's going to be some overlap with Phantoms who were principals at some point, because that's just how the show works, but I would say:

Ian Jon Bourg - He was definitely principal in the German productions, but he was only ever an understudy in the various English-language productions he was in (national tour, Las Vegas, World Tours), which is a crying shame as he was so solid and so consistently good in every run. I don't know if he'd necessarily beat out some of the principals he was opposite (vocally he'd win against Brad Little, at least), but he was at least on par with them.

Scott Davies - Another who was principal at one point, but I think most people know him as London's long-running standby for some ten years, and those ten years saw him giving an even better performance than when he was principal - he was more nuanced, more emotional, just a stunning performer no matter what cast he was opposite. He saw so many actors come and go that I can't say he was necessary as good or better than all of them, but I sure did enjoy him just as much as many of them.

Jeremy Stolle - Stolle! Now this is one who has definitely never had an official principal run. I know some find him too stoic, but I always loved how subtle and detailed his acting was and how he used his voice so effectively. Again, can't say he was better than everyone (Panaro, at least, beats him out), but I definitely enjoyed him more than, say, Ben Crawford, Peter Joback, Norm Lewis, and the name we shall not speak.

David Arnsperger - Arnsperger did have a short, temporary run as principal in Oberhausen (where I liked him better than Brent Barrett), but mainly I know him as the alternate Phantom in Hamburg. In all fairness to Mathias Edenborn, the principal Phantom, I did think Edenborn grew into the role over time, but I always preferred Arnsperger's voice, and for a time, his old-school approach to the role.

Andrey Shkoldychenko - Another who has actually never had a principal run, and one where I unequivocally like him better than the two principals. I don't care for Ivan Ozhogin - I find him rather one-note - and I like Dmitri Ermak but find him a bit too smooth at times. Shkoldychenko, though was the best of both worlds - as commanding and arresting as Ermak but with a bit of the grit of Ozhogin. Definitely my favorite Russian Phantom.

Fred Silveira - Okay, so Silveira is decent, but I wouldn't say he's incredible. He's just better than Thiago Arancam, which, let's be real, is not hard to be. Oh, and I guess this can apply to the other Brazilian Phantoms (Leonardo Neiva and Cleyton Pulzi), I just don't know as much about them.
