can you believe that. i’m not talking about the racquet hit or the eden’s drugging fiasco. i’m saying they never hurt the mind and the heart. and even–the hit to the stomach was when they literally had never met. and the drugging was not about Neil; it was all about Andrew. there was no relationship whatsoever even formed. there was no choking incident like with Kevin.

i’m saying there was never any of the romance tropes used to create angst. no love triangle. no cheating. no bet. no manipulation. no backstab. no running away. no miscommunication. no lies.

think about all the couples you’ve ever read or watched. the best and the worst. the mainstream and the niche. think about it.

they had all the knives. all the opportunities. but not a single time did they take advantage, in any way. no physical, emotional, psychological, or sexual violence & abuse, never ever.

do you know how comforting that is? how safe it makes me feel? because that means that through them, I was never hurt. they didn’t cause me any torment. they were not the reason I cried for 2 weeks straight every single day after I finished the series; the world they live in did.

and by the way. across 3 books, they did not find it in themselves to hurt one another. it was not necessary to keep things interesting. let me repeat that: it was unnecessary to the plot to add violence within their relationship.

and that is the skill Nora Sakavic possesses. that is the power she holds. that’s what makes her the best, the favorite, the beloved, the mastermind, the poet, the one true author.

SANTA TELL ME | NEIL PERRY

It was finally Christmas, and your parents had left the house. They were never passionate about the holiday, but you definitely were. As soon as they were gone, you didn’t hesitate to invite your boyfriend, Neil, over to spend some relaxed time together.

The two of you were on the couch, wrapped in a warm blanket. Your arms were around his torso, and his were resting on your hips, holding you in a tender embrace. The lights were off, the fireplace crackled softly, and the television played a Christmas movie you weren’t really paying attention to.

“This is the best Christmas ever” Neil whispered, just as distracted from the movie as you.

You chuckled. “It’s not even Christmas yet.”

“Well, the best almost Christmas” he replied with a sweet smile, pressing a soft kiss to your head.

That smile of his, had a way of changing everything. The lights from the Christmas tree reflected on his pale face, reminiscent of snow, with his cheeks slightly flushed. He looked so endearing that your heart raced every time you looked at him, or even thought about him. Slowly, you adjusted yourself until you were face to face. Your eyes met, and for a few seconds, neither of you moved. Then, you both leaned in for a kiss. The faint sound of the movie and the crackling flames in the fireplace made you feel safe. At home.

“I wish we could stay like this forever” Neil said softly, taking your hands and gently tracing them with his fingers.

“So do I” you admitted, almost overwhelmed by how sweet everything felt, though you didn’t mind. “You know, you don’t have to leave. My parents won’t be back for two days.”

Neil shook his head. “My dad only let me stay until midnight, remember?”

Silence settled over you both again, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. It was the kind of silence where thoughts spoke louder than words. Neil’s hands moved back to your hips, softly caressing them, while you cupped his face in your hands, stroking his cheeks gently.

Neil let out a sigh, enjoying your caresses with tenderness and feeling your love through them. The silence was all you needed, your hands traveled over his silhouette and his rested on you, feeling all the stress and worry leave his body whenever he was with you. You made him feel good.

"I have something for you," Neil murmured, pulling away from you and standing up to search for his backpack. A little surprised, you watched as he pulled out a perfectly decorated box with a sweet white ribbon. Neil smiled and walked back toward you, gently placing the box in your hands.

Just as gently, you took the box, feeling your heart race as fast as it could. You looked at him one more time before opening it, and smiled shyly, seeing a silver necklace with a butterfly pendant. You loved butterflies, and Neil had come to love them too just because of you.

"Neil, you didn’t have to" you whispered, your eyes still on the necklace.

Neil smiled. He didn’t care about the money, not when your reaction was so sweet. He knew how grateful you were. Without answering, he quickly took the box from you and carefully pulled out the necklace, motioning for you to turn around. And so you did. Calmly, Neil placed the necklace around your neck, letting it rest there. It looked perfect on you.

"You look beautiful" Neil murmured, kissing your flushed cheeks with a smile.

"Thank you so much, honey" you said shyly, giving him a hug that lasted longer than you expected, but it was impossible not to love Neil’s hugs. They were so sweet, pure, and full of love. "I also have something for you, though I was going to give it to you at Christmas, I guess i'm going to do it now-"

Neil smiled excitedly, watching as you rummaged under the Christmas tree until you found his gift. It was wrapped with a red velvet ribbon, so elegant. Nervously, you handed it to him.

"Thank you so much, my love" he said, smiling brightly, thrilled to receive a gift from you.

"You haven’t even opened it!" you squealed, feeling nervous, encouraging him a little.

"I appreciate it just the same" he shrugged, tearing off the wrapping paper. His smile widened even more when he saw the book in his hands. It was a book made by you, with a cover too neat to be handmade, and on the first page you’d written him a poem, full of love. When Neil tried to turn to the next pages, you stopped him by placing your hand on his and shaking your head.

"You have to read it in private, when you have more time. It’s a long book, but for now, I just want to spend time with you" you said. Neil, more in love than ever, nodded and closed the book, putting it down beside him.

His arms wrapped around your torso surprising you, but you relaxed once the initial surprise faded, letting yourself be enveloped in his affection. Your fingers tangled in his hair, and his lips kissed your neck, each kiss and caress was a sweet "thank you" from him. His kisses on that spot made you giggle, as his warm lips decorated your neck with soft and tender gestures.

"Merry Christmas" he whispered against your neck, and you fainted in his arms, feeling his love surround you.

"Merry Christmas, Neil" you whispered back the same way.

Neil lifted his gaze to meet yours, his bright eyes making you feel weak under his look and touch, but in the most beautiful way a weak can feel like. Neil whispered something you couldn’t quite understand before kissing you in a perfect kiss. The taste of hot chocolate on his lips made the kiss even more memorable, the mistletoe above you, the Christmas movie on the TV, the lights on the tree. Everything was perfect. He made everything perfect.

"I love you" you blurted out without thinking, covering your mouth with your hand, surprised at yourself.

Neil, on the other hand, froze before you. It was the first time either of you had said it. But within seconds, he was laughing at your reaction, his eyes hidden behind his smiling cheeks.

"I love you. I love you so much. You’re the best Christmas gift" he whispered, kissing you again between his words, making your clumsy confession worth it.

With him, everything was worth it. Neil always appreciated everything, remembered it not just in his mind, but in his heart. He always noticed what you liked and what bothered you, paying attention to details you wouldn’t even notice. And he did all of that because he loved you. Because you mattered to him, and because he didn’t want to be anything less for you. He wanted to give you everything because you deserved everything.

That night would end up being the best of all, the best Christmas of your life. The silent kisses, the speaking glances, the childlike hearts, and the affectionate touches. Everything shared on such a special night, as Christmas truly was. With him, everything always felt just right.

I hate to say this, but I think he frequently dissociates, usually for very short periods of time, he doesn't even know it tbh, just thinks he is out of the element.

He is subconsciously under a lot of stress so his mind tries to flee from it by dissociating.

I think he likes potted plants, especially succulents. He is patient so I can see him take care of even the very difficult ones.

Two months prior to its release, would-be doyens of Swift’s Tortured Poets Department have taken its barbed track listing very literally, leading to intense, often nefarious speculation regarding Swift’s six-year relationship with the British actor Joe Alwyn, which seemingly ended in early 2023.

The album’s title, revealed onstage at the Grammy awards, was quickly linked to a December, 2022 interview with Alwyn and Paul Mescal in which they revealed that Andrew Scott started their group chat, the Tortured Man Club. (“It hasn’t had much use recently,” Alwyn said: you wonder if it’s undergone a recent revival.) Swift revealed the leading track list a day later: My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys, So Long, London, I Can Do It With a Broken Heart, The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, to name a few, sending fans wild with speculation.

Swift, obviously, has every right to sing about her relationships however she wants to (no apologies to Eamonn Holmes). But in the absence of any music, some fans have spread baseless, dangerous and even libellous allegations about Alwyn’s conduct (which, for obvious reasons, I can’t repeat).

Last month, a brief fan-shot video of them dining in a New Orleans restaurant in December, 2022 was recirculated online with AI-doctored audio that made it sound as though Alwyn is saying “you don’t get to tell me about sad,” a line printed on the back of one of the new album’s four physical editions.

When Swift recently told a crowd that she was “lonely” when writing her 2020 album Folklore – some of which was co-written with Alwyn during the pandemic, a lonely time for most – fans took that as further confirmation of their theories. A live medley of three songs that all appear to reference cheating threw petrol on the fire.

Swift could make this stop. She is no stranger to airing her displeasure with the likes of Ticketmaster, Scooter Braun, Spotify and Apple Music, and, occasionally, politicians. Before she released Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) last year, she gave a veiled speech at one Eras tour date effectively asking fans not to go after John Mayer, whom she dated when she was 19 and he was 32 and is understood to be the subject of that album’s Dear John.

“I am not putting this album out so you should feel the need to defend me on the internet against someone you think I wrote a song about 14m years ago when I was 19,” she said in Minneapolis.

But for whatever reason – and obviously, no member of the public has any idea what transpired between her and Alwyn so far – this time she has opted to stay quiet.

Establishing a baseline for conduct is neither commercially risky nor unprecedented: just last week, Ariana Grande said, after the release of her post-divorce album Eternal Sunshine: “Anyone that is sending hateful messages to the people in my life based on your interpretation of this album is not supporting me and is absolutely doing the polar opposite of what I would ever encourage”.

It feels like the endgame of a cat-and-mouse act that’s gone too far. Swift’s gestures towards meaning have led every single thing she does to be considered a kind of marketing, a clue to be solved. It leaves a superstar who’s usually hot on her messaging open to misinterpretation: hints about her personal life are turned by some fans into witch-hunts for anyone perceived to have wronged her; her current silence on politics allows politicians to invoke her name, from the New South Wales police commissioner quoting Swift’s anti-haters lines while defending police to Joe Biden joking that the matter of her apparently much sought-after endorsement is “classified” on Late Night With Seth Meyers.

When Swift made a blandly neutral handwritten post encouraging US citizens to register to vote on Super Tuesday, some fans speculated that her unusual left-leaning handwriting was the real indication of her loyalties – suggesting they’re so starved of substance that they’re reading into empty messages because of this dynamic she has established. (The more likely explanation is the insane way she holds a pen.)

For Swift to only direct fans as to her wishes when it suits her, it weakens her status as a truth-teller. If the comparisons with Dickinson mean anything, she might remember that nothing in the world has as much power as a word feels like the endgame of a cat-and-mouse act that’s gone too far.

Historians identify lost portrait of Shelley painted days before his death

The poet Percy Bysshe Shelley has been identified in a portrait painted by an artist who met him just days before his death by drowning off the Italian coast in 1822, aged just 29.

It was created by William Edward West, the American painter, who had been struck by Shelley’s good looks while on a visit to paint Lord Byron in Tuscany.

Professor Andrew Stauffer, who has conducted the research, told The Telegraph: “This portrait captures Shelley just before his death. We don’t have better portraits of him.”

He believes that its modest size - 7.25 inches by 9.25 inches - may explain why it eluded notice before an American academic, Newman Ivey White, decided in the 1940s that it actually depicted Leigh Hunt, the English essayist, journalist and poet.

Until then, it was accepted as a portrait of Shelley, after surfacing in 1905.

Prof Stauffer said: “Then White’s debunking comes along and it disappears. But I’m basically debunking his debunking.”

Shelley had come to Italy to broker an introduction between Hunt and Byron, wanting them to collaborate on a new political poetic journal. They sought Byron’s involvement, both for his money and his fame. Literally a week after Hunt arrived, Shelley drowned after his boat foundered during a stormy return voyage to Lerici.

West later recalled their meeting, telling his nephew: “After seeing Shelley again…, I determined to paint [a] picture of him while his image was fresh in my memory.”

Prof Stauffer is President of the Byron Society of America and head of English at the University of Virginia, in whose library the painting hangs.

‘Misdirected debunking’

He made this discovery while doing research for his forthcoming book, Byron: A Life in Ten Letters, to be published by Cambridge University Press early next year.

He will publish his research in the Keats-Shelley Journal this month.

He points to evidence that West had multiple opportunities to observe Shelley in person. For example, an 1828 article titled Shelley in The Yankee and Boston Literary Gazette features West’s description of Shelley as having “the most wonderful-looking head ever seen alive on our earth”.

Prof Stauffer writes: “Published when Shelley was little known in the United States, this reference to West’s opinion of Shelley’s appearance strikes me with the force of authenticity.”

He argues that “the misdirected debunking” of this painting has “distorted our sense of Shelley’s appearance”, with the result that he has been seen primarily through lesser portraits by amateur artists.

In the newly attributed oil painting, the poet was captured by a professional who had observed him firsthand.

Of the amateur portraits, one is by Amelia Curran, who was so unhappy with her work that she threw it onto the fire, only to rescue it at the last minute.

Prof Stauffer said that putting the West and Curran portraits side by side, one sees similarities such as the straight nose with its elongated nostril, a heavily curved upper lip and a rounded chin.

White had argued that, according to contemporaries, Shelley’s hair was beginning to turn grey in 1822 and that this was absent from the portrait. 

Prof Stauffer writes: “Perhaps White never saw the West portrait in person and could not see in reproductions the grey, which is plainly visible in the painting.”

Homestuck: Beyond Canon Upd8 for March 8, 2024

Alright! Not expecting this to be as hard hitting as last time, but who knows what the gang has planned.

First, we've got a news post from James saying they're playing around a bit with the upd8 schedule this month. I'm glad they're not doing a page a day, though there were times when that happened during the old upd8 culture. As he says, the big thing was that we never knew when one would drop, or how big of an upd8 it would be. But at the end of the day, that required a ton of output that only a madman, or someone in the deep throws of their creative passion (same thing really) can produce. This team is taking a much more thought out route to their outcome than Andrew did, planning things out with outlines and storyboards well ahead of time. Not a lot of room for pages to drop multiple times in a day with that kind work involved.

This won't exactly have me mashing my f5 key until the next upd8, but my ear will definitely be to the ground.

Of course Meenah is the Big Kahuna. But the BIGGEST KAHUNA? I'm going to be so glad to see our favorite shouty boy again.

Oh wow . . . We're talking about Dave and Jade. This is definitely more of a rant, though still kind of tame. I mean, god! Even with the whole Candy "will they/won't they" they were still best bros. And yet Dave dragged his heels on helping Karkat when he needed it.

And from Karkat's perspective, they had no sooner gotten past all that, including the awkward apologies, and Dave just mysteriously dies. I wonder if anyone has figured out why Dave died?

Actually, this might be why we haven't heard about it from Jade yet. From the perspective of the war, this appears to be old news. It doesn't feel like it's been that long, but things happen fast in a conflict like this. And you don't really get time to truly process and move on until it's all over.

I get so wrapped up in friendships in my fics that I forget to include the couples that the fics are supposed to be about. I'm doing a concept for next chapters for Soldier, Poet, King which is my Kevkateaaron fic and I have like 5 next chapters planed out and in those chapters they have interactions in next two, but then in the next 3 chapters, Aaron is mostly hanging out with Neil, Kevin with Allison and Katelyn with Andrew and that was my plan, to like also focus on those developing friendships, but I feel like I lost the romantic plot in this.

For chapter 9 that is the next to be planed out I literally wrote down this: Something actually Katekevaaron maybe? After all this is supposed to be about them.  And I hope I stick to it.

Movies are not poems. Cinema is based on externalities, on the documentary impulse to record and preserve that which is happening outside of ourselves. Poetry is interior, a response to the impulse to record and preserve the emotional and intellectual experiences produced within us by the outside world. Making movies tends to be communal, writing poems to be private. And yet the two are always superimposing themselves on each other -- on the one hand we have poetry readings, and on the other the solitary viewing of movies in our living rooms and bedrooms. And from the beginning, moviemakers have striven for the poetic, just as poets have always tried to record the seen and heard as pathways to the emotion and the idea. Andrew Haigh's All of Us Strangers is the product of the attempt to find something like an objective correlative for a variety of emotions -- loneliness, desire, regret -- and ideas -- the centrality of family relationships, the nature of sexuality, the persistence of the past. Haigh finds it in a ghost story, a well-worn trope for literature and film, and tantalizes us into questioning how much of the experience depicted in the film is external and how much is interior -- whether Adam (Andrew Scott) actually encounters the ghosts or is projecting his psychological disorder onto the world. One critic wrote that she approached the ending of the film hoping that we would find out that what we have been watching is actually a story Adam has written. But that would have been on the order of the banal "it was all a dream" conclusion that has been foisted on us too often. Haigh wisely leaves us with questions -- maybe too many for the film's own good. His aim is to unsettle us, in the way the loose ends of a poem, the lines and images that don't quite resolve into explicit statements, linger with us. It helps that the movie is perfectly cast, with actors who can translate longing and loss into visible experience. If you've ever been cautioned about a movie to not take it too literally, this is one of those times.

Isaac is a huge Marvel fan, and absolutely LOVES ‘Captain America: Civil War’, and he could watch it any time he’s bored. His least favorite movie would probably be that live action ‘Dora The Explorer’ movie, which he was definitely forced to see with his lil sis😭

Oliver loves a movie I mentioned in an older fic: the version of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ that has Leonardo DiCaprio in it. He absolutely LOVES that movie more than any other. And he doesn’t have a least favorite movie, but rather a least favorite genre. He hates any kind of horror movie with a ton of gore and violence.

Aiden is a huge Marvel fan like Isaac and he loves ‘The Amazing Spiderman’ with Andrew Garfield, and he absolutely has a literal Spiderman suit at his parents’ house that he wears on Halloween to hand candy out to kids. And his least favorite tv-show is the new ‘Pokémon: Horizons’ show that he takes as a personal offense as a life-long Pokémon lover (and I honestly agree).

Spirit absolutely loves one movie and one show: ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Haikyuu’. She loves ‘Deadpool’ because he’s funny, he’s Ryan Reynolds, and he’s just an awesome anti-hero. And the anime ‘Haikyuu’ is a guilty pleasure for her and she watches it when she just wants to relax and chill. As for her least favorite movie, she absolutely hates ‘The Shallows’, which is a terrifying shark movie.

Keiko absolutely loves the show ‘House’ and even has a sentimental stuffed koala he named Dr. Wilson, which Amberlynn finds absolutely adorable. And he hates the movie ‘Stepbrothers’ because he finds it to be the ultimate level of cringy.

Amberlynn’s favorite movie is ‘Oliver and Company’ because it always makes her just feel happy, and she knows EVERY SONG by heart. And her least favorite movie is the Christmas ‘Beethoven’ movie where they made Beethoven talk😭.

Eliana truly has so much love for ‘The Dead Poets Society’ despite how much it makes her sob. And her least favorite movie is ‘Love and Gelato’ because she firmly believes that they ruined the story from the original book.

Jordan is an addict when it comes to ‘Greys Anatomy’, and she has Arizona Robbins to thank for her discovery that she’s into girls😘. And she agrees with El that ‘Love and Gelato’ is the worst movie to EVER exist because she also loves the original book.

Birdie’s favorite movie is ‘Inside Out’ because it makes her feel so many emotions that eventually all just turn nostalgic. And her least favorite show is ‘SpongeBob’ for the simple reason that, as she puts it, “his laugh scratches my brain the wrong way.”

Felix is a 110% ‘Gilmore Girls’ fanatic and knows almost every single detail of almost every single episode, and even has a Pinterest board that’s just photos of Tristan, Dean, Jess, and Logan. And he despises the live action version of ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’ cuz. . . reasons.

Atticus loves the movie ‘Little Rascals’ and he used to watch it every day as a kid, and still loves it now that he’s older. And he hates ‘Chucky: Childs Play’, which is the goriest horror movie that he’s ever seen, and he started crying the first and last time he watched it when he was 13 and at the movies with friends who did tease him for it a little, but comforted him when they realized how genuinely upset and sick it made him to watch.

"The Tortured Man's Club" is a pretentious name, but in a self aware, referential way to make fun of the broody characters Joe, Paul and Andrew played. "The Tortured Poet's Department" is just a pretentious name, if it's meant to be taken literally (because TS has no sense of humor to poke fun at herself) or as a dig to an ex.

I hope at least is not another tired Jack Antonoff style album because it's going to be so ridiculous having such a snobby title with the plainest most generic pop music.

Well, if the titles that have been leaked are real.. yikes... the title is not gonna match the songs.. "I can fix him".. really, that is poetry? 🙄
