This fandom needs to back off of Matt Donovan and Zach Roerig
Starting with the ridiculous: Zach Roerig and Julie Plec never dated. It's ridiculous that I have to say this. There is a blurry picture of him leaning in to Julie Plec at some point. I even tried to do the work for you all and could not find one shred of evidence of an actual kiss. Y'all are just wild for this rumor. If anything, my search revealed that Ian and Zach were in a relationship. I mean look at that affection.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, with just a tiny bit of research, we can find out that Zach was in a relationship when he started the show and, due to issues at home, he ends up fighting for full custody of his two year old daughter while on the show. The only romantic connection there is any reports on is with Candice King and that was relatively short lived. Otherwise Zach was just a single father, trying to raise and support his daughter.
Now people will try to say Zach is racist as well. I've heard he was racist because of dating Plec. See earlier paragraph. Or that he made racist comments to Kat. Again, there is zero evidence of this. People keep pointing to this interview saying that he either does the Nazi salute or a black power fist and it is such a reach it's ridiculous. He is looking at Kat because the question asked related to Bonnie and Matt and he reaches forward as a hand gesture and then raises his fist in a fairly generic way.
I can't tell if people get Matt Davis and Zach confused because he plays Matt or if people just love to hate on Zach because he plays Matt. Either way, it is disgusting to spread rumors about someone being racist when there is no evidence as far as I can tell. It's also terrible to distract from the actual racism that Kat had to deal with on the show.
From every interview I've seen he seems like such a sweet person. He even said working on the show was a "healing process" and yet the fandom treats him like this. Zach goes to the panels and none of his coworkers seem uncomfortable and avoid him. Not that them liking someone means that person is good, most of them still interact with Matt Davis and yet unfollowed Michael Malarkey.
Now onto Matt Donovan.
Tumblr media
First of all, the fact that y'all pretend this man isn't attractive tells me all I need to know. Objectively, Zach Roerig is attractive. You can not like his character but you all just sound goofy.
The biggest complaint with Matt is that he is "useless," but this to me just shows you are watching the show for either the romance or attractive people and not for storytelling.
The role of the "human" in fantasy is so important. We, as an audience, are humans and we need to have a threshold character. A character that reminds of that even though we are rooting for the supernatural creatures, they are still not the good guys. It's why supernatural stories often revolve around humans. It gives the show the humanity that it would be in danger of losing if it just focused on the predatory species. Matt reminds us of the humanity that is at stake in the show.
Matt is particularly important in this show because he not only the sole human in a pack of supernatural creatures, but he is the only one without financial privilege in TVD. Matt not only comes from a family that is struggling financially, but his parents are gone and his sister is struggling with addiction. Matt is working it appears full time while in high school full time. All of his friends are going to parties and given cars and clothes, planning for college; while Matt is having to figure out how to afford his mom's mortgage/rent. Season 1 opens up focusing on how much Elena is struggling with the death of her parents but dismissed Matt's struggles as some lovesick teenager. When in reality Elena at least had a support system. Sure Jeremy was spiraling like Vicki, but Elena and Jeremy had Jenna. Matt was struggling with the purposeful abandonment of his parents and his sister's drug addiction with zero support system. He even loses his childhood friends when Elena and he break up. He only really has Tyler, who, let's be honest is not the best friend in Season 1.
He is also the first person in the show to lose someone due to the supernatural. His sister ends up attacked and in the hospital and he then has to figure out how to pay for that while taking care of Vicki who is clearly struggling even more than normal. When Vicki does end up dead, he knows there is more too it and the entire town, including his friends, gaslight him. Matt has every right to hate vampires. They murdered his sister in cold blood.
Matt is so devastated by Vicki's death that is haunts him throughout the show. He even risks his life just to talk to her ghost for a few moments.
People say Matt hates the supernatural, and he did, but he had reasons. And despite that, he was always there for his friends. Even when he was terrified, and in much more of a risk than his vampire friends, he was always there for them.
Yes, Matt is the one driving the truck when Elena dies and Stefan saves Matt over Elena, but none of that is Matt's fault. He was attempting to save his friend's life with Jeremey's help. How is that any different than Elena having Stefan compel Jeremy to leave town? Let's also not forget who helps Elena feed in her early days. But the fandom never wants to give him credit for that.
Matt is constantly used, berated, manipulated, and compelled by the supernatural around him. Mystic Falls needed someone like Matt to stand up for them since they were unaware of the supernatural world. Even the "good vampires" killed humans. Matt was trying to protect his town.
The last complaint ties it all in, that Matt only survived so long on the show because he was dating Julie Plec. Again, that's a lie. He never dated Julie, and it especially had nothing to do with the show writing. I would also like to point out that the character Matt is based on, Matt Honeycutt, in the book never dies. So why are we surprised he doesn't die in the show? Matt had a lot of close calls and even had a Gilbert ring for protection. No one ever asks why Steven McQeen (Jeremy) doesn't die or assumes it's because he was "sleeping his way to the top." These assumptions are immature and baseless.
All Matt wants to do is live a normal life, something he had to fight much harder than the rest of them for. He is the most consistent friend out of all of them. People love to say "how did Matt get so many girls?" Because he's nice. Because he respected them and fought for them, even if they didn't deserve it. They would all have been better off ending up with Matt.
Honestly, Matt and Cami's purpose are similar to me and both of the actors deserve such a huge apology from this fandom. Some of y'all need to learn to separate a show from reality.

The amount of hate I've seen for Zach Roerig recently, calling him racist, is wild. I know people love to point to this one video of a panel he was speaking at, but if you actually watch the video, you'll see that he wasn't doing anything like that. At one point, he was just speaking with his hands. But people just love to hate on him cause they cannot separate a character from the actor.
Everyone wants to focus on Zach, yet I haven't seen any criticism for the other actors who have actually done racist things or made racist comments. We all know Matt Davis, but what about Nina Dobrev unfollowing the one Palestinian actor in the show after he stood up for his people. What about Claire Holt only speaking out for white Israelis and being silent as Palestinians are still being killed. What about Daniel Gillies resharing Islamophobic content?
If you want to come after the TVDU cast for being racist, there are plenty of opportunities without making things up.

Wow, I never knew Zach Roerig was getting hate from fans. I know Matt wasn't a lot of people's favorite character, but I never knew the actor was getting hate for it. That's just crazy. But sadly, that doesn't really shock me, since it seems almost every cast member on TVD and TO has gotten hate at some point or another. As far as the TVD/TO cast in general goes, I haven't really followed them much and don't really keep up with them. Aside from the fact that some of them have gotten married and started families, or have podcasts, or have explored other endeavors, I don't really follow or know. I'm just glad that most of them are happy, living their lives, doing their own thing, and have been able to maintain their close friendship all these years, after all the craziness and chaos with TVD and TO. Ian, Nate, and Matt (Alaric) are the only ones that I stopped supporting and don't really care for much, as a result of problematic behavior. Overall, I don't really keep track of celebrities' dating history or go looking through their friends/followers list, because I don't really care for the most part. And I have better things to do than go looking and digging through who follows who or who dates who.
There is plenty of hate to go around in the TVDU fandom. You are probably correct in saying everyone has gotten hate at some point. I mean it even extends to their significant others. Daniel Gillies had to threaten to go offline if people didn't stop hating on his new girlfriend. Not to mention the amount of hate Joseph and Candice's (ex)spouses constantly get. I think people look past the Zach hate because it is typically veiled in lies and people don't bother to fact check it.
I honestly think a lot of the cast needs to move on from the fandom. I know this is a super unpopular opinion given I haven't moved on from it either. But it would do them some good to put some distance between themselves and the show. I know a lot of them are tired of the conventions but just keep going because it's an easy paycheck. You can just tell by the fact that they get the same handful of questions every single time and just keep making up answers to keep it entertaining for themselves.
I personally have never supported Matt (Alaric) and Nate (Kol) and they continue to make me thankful of this. However, over the past year the rest of the cast has made me question my involvement in the fandom. I'm with you, I don't care who is following who or who is dating who. I like the show, not the actors. But I do hate when people spread lies and hate.
If we want to hate on the actors, there's plenty to point out. Recently, most of them have been super racist and problematic in regards to their stance on Palestine and posting racist podcasts about Muslim people (I'm looking at you, Daniel Gillies).
All of this to say, I don't follow any of them except Leah and Michael Malarkey. I also don't stream the show anymore and won't spend any money in the fandom. I think it is fine to try and separate the art from the artist, but I personally don't like to spend my money on people I don't respect.
Sorry, I know I kind of used your ask to go on a tangent, but thank you for the ask!

I got a lot of edits on my fyp prior to watching any TVDU show so I knew a solid amount of the plot lines prior to watching either show, which also means I knew what characters were normalized to be hated/loved. I started these shows and expected to absolutely despise Matt, Elena, Tyler, and Cami. None of them are my favorite, but I never understood the hate for any of them whatsoever.
The Matt hate just makes no sense, I’m convinced people just want to “fit in” and hate the person that everyone else hates. You pretty much explained everything I would say for him so I’ll hold back a bit here. And yeah, I’m tired of people pretending he’s not attractive cause there is not a single actor on this show that doesn’t look good.
Everyone calls Elena a crybaby, but if they had lost the amount of people that she had before they’re even 20 years old, I guarantee you they’d be crying even more than she did. And calling her selfish? She very rarely ever put herself over anyone. There’s also the argument that she ‘played Stefan’ which in my opinion is just straight out wrong, it’s not like she was pretending to be in love with him while she was with him, but if you hate her for that, you’d have to hate like half the show. I swear everyone dated everyone within that friend group, why do people only hate on her for it? Also this has nothing to do with my point, but why does everyone hate on her NH era? I liked it, it gave her character something different.
Everyone hates on Tyler for one of two reasons. One being that he tried to SA Vicki in season 1, which you would think is a valid excuse, but then they go onto say Klaus, Damon, and/or Katherine is their favorite character (and I’m saying this as my Damon and Klaus are both in my top 5 TVDU characters). The second reason would be something along the lines of Tyler wanting to get revenge on Klaus. I do think he went too far with trying to kill Hayley/hope, but aside from that, he had every right to get revenge on Klaus. He killed his mom and practically ruined his life, including messing with his relationship with Caroline. I actually love Forewood, but I don’t think they could’ve been endgame after that. So I don’t get why people hate on him for leaving Caroline, because I feel like continuing to lead her on when his head is nowhere near the right space would’ve been worse.
Then there’s cami, which is honestly the most confusing one out of all to me. I completely understand her not being your favorite, especially if you’re into more of the anti heroes or villains (like me), but I do not understand why people just absolutely despise her. She plays a major part in the originals, especially early on, as she is the only person Klaus seems to care about listening to whatsoever. He isn’t paying Hayley any sort of attention, and he lied to/betrayed Elijah left and right in season 1. She’s also never betrayed anyone that she considers to be friends or family. The biggest reason she’s hated on is because she ‘stole Klaus from Caroline.” 1. I genuinely just do not get what people see in klaroline. I don’t absolutely despise them, but I do not like them either. Klaus hurt her multiple times (which, by the way, why do people act like Klaus is a hero for saving Caroline from a bite he caused…?) and Caroline was manipulating him every chance she got. I totally understand the whole ‘enemies to lovers’ trope, considering I like delena, but I just do not get it here. 2. How did anyone see that Klaus (and the originals) was getting his own show, and still expect klaroline to work out? 95% of interactions they had post TO being made was complete fan service. It would’ve been WAY too difficult to do a long distance thing with two different shows, especially when neither of them were (im so gonna get hated for this) never in love with each other, they weren’t even in a relationship. Oh and back to the forewood thing real quick, Tyler had every right to be pissed at Caroline for sleeping with Klaus.
Well that turned into a klaroline bashing towards the end. For the record my top 5 characters are Damon, Elijah, kol, hayley, and Klaus in that order and there really aren’t any ships (canonical ships anyway) that I absolutely hate so.
Side note, thank you for being able to hold characters accountable. I like characters as villains/anti heroes because they are a villain/anti hero, I will never understand why people try to defend their favorite character and make them seem like a hero. Like the character for their character, don’t make them into something completely different. If you wanna debate anything further (or something entirely different) let me know, I enjoy debating about shows, I just typically can’t find anyone in this fandom (or any fandom for that matter) that is able to have an actual debate without someone starting to scream over an opinion lmao.
There really isn’t a question here I just kinda felt like ranting after reading your post about Matt Donovan so here it is. Reply to this as you please!
I was fortunate enough to watch the shows before I got into the fandom so I didn't get spoilers (at least for TVD), but more importantly, I didn't have anyone to influence me on which characters to like or not. Which was why I was so surprised when I joined the fandom and saw so much hatred. But I do think some people just "bandwagon" hate characters. Especially Matt. Because anytime I ask people why, they can't even truly express why they *hate* him.
Elena was never my favorite character but I loved early seasons of Elena. I even enjoyed her NH era. I didn't like her sire bond era much. But she definitely gets too much hate. Even at times when I think she can be selfish, she's still miles better than the men the fandom loves.
I've actually posted about Tyler before, you can find that here. Sure, he's done questionable/problematic things, but who hasn't? The hate he gets is ridiculous, especially because it always comes from Damon or Klaus stans. I actually like Caroline and adored Forewood, but I hated how she handled the breakdown of their relationship. I blame the writers. They continuously tanked Caroline's character in order to get views with klaroline.
I love Cami and she is the one character that I truly believe has done no wrong. Cami was truly a turning point for Klaus. Cami was not only an important person for Klaus but for the entire Mikaelson family and the entirety of New Orleans. I also wrote about that recently. But yes, 100% of the hate she gets is because of Klaroline stans. I used to be indifferent to Klaroline. Like I don't like them because they are toxic and I would never ship them, and there are plenty of ships I feel this way about, but the fandom has made me actively dislike them. Klaroline had no possible way of working out and was just lust, but people build them up in their head and then attacked and harassed a real life person because of their delusions.
I'm glad you found my post and enjoyed it! I love finding people that want to engage and have actual discussions about the fandom. Too many people get so set in their views and can't discuss the characters without getting angry. I completely agree. We can all love the characters but 99% of the characters in this show are problematic to say the least. We can love them and still acknowledge this. I love to analyze the morality of the show because it is interesting as we can't use are real life standards to do so. I obviously love over analyzing everything about the show as I spend so much time doing so.
Feel free to ask anything or reach out!

What did you think of Matt/Rebekah?
Tumblr media
Much like with any of the cross-over ships, I'm not a fan.
They just felt very random to me. Part of this is because Rebekah's character was just used to mirror Elena in TVD to cause conflict. Elena loved Stefan, so Rebekah did. Elena wanted the cure to be human, so Rebekah did. They even made Elena's necklace about Rebekah. So it's not surprising that they just threw her with the person that Elena was with when she was at her most human, normal life.
I'm not saying Rebekah was actively seeking Elena's life, rather the writers were doing it to cause conflict between the two. This is a very common storytelling tool to show parallels, but TVD relied on it far too often with Elena. We had Caroline season 1, Katherine most of the time, and then Rebekah. By the time it got to Rebekah, I was just done with one type of woman wanting the exact same things. We finally got to see Rebekah grow and become her own person in TO. But it's hard to picture the Rebekah from TO and Matt together.
I partly think they were thrown together so that Rebekah didn't get in the way of the love triangle with Stelena/Delena. Rebekah was just used by both Damon and Stefan to make Elena jealous and then discarded. She was partnered up with Matt because of course women need a man to focus on. I also feel like at this point we were getting a lot of Bonnie/Matt friendship. It's almost like the writers wanted to make sure no one started shipping them by throwing him with literally anyone. They didn't even get to further their friendship because of it.
My biggest issue with all of the MFG and TO cross over relationships is the "tension" everyone loves is actually just hatred. The MFG has every right to hate the Mikaelsons and the Mikaelsons never actually do anything to make it right or redeem themselves. Matt spent most of their courtship actively trying to kill Rebekah and her family. Matt doesn't treat Rebekah well (I don't blame him, he had every reason to hate vampires, especially the Mikaelsons), and Rebekah just seems desperate trying to make him like her for some reason. They never really show what she likes in him. The infatuation comes out of nowhere. She says she likes him because he's so "human" and I fully get that was his role in the show, but it felt very random for that to be enough for her obsession with him.
I also just don't buy her infatuation with Matt based on the timeline. Now I know most of the timeline was written after TVD but they didn't care to try and merge it together well. Marcel "dies" in 1919, she meets Stefan in 1920, and then is daggered until 2010. They don't give my girl a chance to breathe before throwing a different guy at her. It's also very clear that they didn't have Rebekah's backstory worked out at this point. She calls Matt "one of the good ones" like she hasn't dated good guys in the past. But Matt is not kind to her. He is a good guy to other people and she just keeps waiting for him to be good to her, but it never happens. Which, again, I don't blame him. Rebekah came into town trying to murder his friends and caused him to drive off a bridge, killing his childhood best friend. He has every right to hate her. I just hated how the writers made her obsessed with someone who hated her.
I do like that Rebekah saw Matt struggling even when his friends didn't. I also like that Matt gets to travel. I've talked about it before, but Matt's friends overlook his financial struggles so much. Everyone in the town does. How did none of the parents take Matt and Vicki in when their mom left? At least Rebekah tried to help. But again, it felt like Matt was getting all of the benefits and Rebekah got very little from their interactions. She liked him for being human and, for some reason, 'wanted to be human,' but he never treated her like a human. He never made her feel accepted or like she was getting a human experience for being with him.
It was a ship with no endgame possible and not even a "for now" scenario. Matt didn't want to be around supernaturals and Rebekah didn't do anything to make him feel safer in that world. If anything, she furthered his hatred. It was never going to be anything more than a fling and even that felt very forced by the writers. Rebekah needed someone who loved her for her. And Matt needed someone human who could pull him away from the supernatural world.
I also have to point out that Matt is 17/18 years old and Rebekah is over 1,000 years old. These ancient vampires really need to stop finding their significant others in high schools. They do try to make Matt seem more mature and Rebekah seemed less mature in TVD, but it doesn't erase the problems.
Thanks for the ask!
