i am almost through my first week of my final semester of college, i am 85% of the way through book one of 4 that need to be read by the 30th, i am just over halfway done with this re-write of CMI that was supposed to be done this month, i think i'm being flirted with??, and my health is going BONKERS

The issue here as far as I can tell is that visual novels, at least in the past, are not marketed as their closest equivalent (books) but as games, a medium that as one its basic touchstones has interactivity. You're not a (semi-)passive consumer of what's going on, you're part of what's going on, even if that ocassionally just means "I walk over to that person and they talk at me as the script dictates".

"Pressing A for 20 hours" is seen as an issue because it strips that layer of interactivity from the story. Books get a pass here because anyone who has heard of a book gets that that's what you do. I imagine they'd get similar shit if they were marketed in video stores as "theater of the mind movies" instead of what books - it's an issue with the setting where they are presented, not the medium itself.

Can this be fixed without wrecking the income of VN makers? I'm not sure. Selling them somewhere instead of steam is probably not the way to go - an established market of many millions is just too juicy a target to ignore (if anyone has sales numbers I'd be interested, since I'm just going off conjecture here). Maybe time will fix the problem, as more VNs like DDLC and the Coffin of Andy and LeyLey with mass-market success come out and the whole thing gets normalised.

It's actually kinda mesmerizing how the popular sentiment around visual novels is that they simultaneously have no gameplay, and also are too hard to get into.

heatwave, also known as HEATWAVE MINIMUM WAGE MAXIMUM DEBT, was a punch in the gut figuratively and literally. its such a pretty and polishedl ittle work feeding on the horrors of just how abstract, unfair and arbitrary this world is and how it manifests in the minds of real people. teh visuals the sounds the writing and THE CHARACTERS have given me a lot to thikn about. andi ts hot. its really hot. its really fucking horny in an earnest way taht truly speaks to me. not only has heatwave been so fukken good it has given me a lot of practical and aesthetical direction on how i should remember to consider teh options i have for visual and story presentation when going forwards with my own projects

my second favorite vn i read this year was slime feet and i thikn the writer for that has got to be stalking me or something since the story was lazer focused towards teh exact emotional notes taht have been my life for the past 5 years or so. i couldnt stop sobbing. the texture of horny and tragic and just coming to terms with the cards yovue been given has been on my mind especially this year so tihs one hit even harder. i couldnt stop sobbing. i could not. stop. sobbing. anyway i look forward to more works like this from the makers (also i thikn tihs one too was inspired by heatwave regarding the presentation as well wild how it all connects together)

Pairing: Ren x Isekai!Reader x Solivan Brugmansia

Summary: You awaken to discover that you’ve been seamlessly transported into a realm where visual novels are real life.

Note: If people like this idea, I will turn this into a series. This will have yandere tendencies later on! This is a crossover between 14 Days with You (14dwy), The Kid at the Back (tkatb), and The Coffin of Andy and Leyley (tcoaal). I might add on other visual novels if people request more or if i like the story is going and want to add more. The reader is kind of clueless, but just for this first part. The artwork isn’t mine!

Prologue

Slowly, you opened your eyes, and the world came into focus. It was as if you had stepped into the frame of a beautifully illustrated book. The colors were vivid, the edges sharp, yet everything pulsed with a gentle breath of life. You immediately sat up with a gasp, your heart a beat behind the realization that dawned upon you– this was no longer your room, your world.

“Hello?” Your voice came out as a whisper, yet it seemed to carry across the room. The door to the room opened, and there two figures emerged. It was two people you instantly recognized–

Andrew and Ashley Graves from The Coffin of Andy and Leyley. Once known in the realm of visual novels, now stood before her in the flesh.

“I see that you're awake now Y/n” Andrew said calmly. Ashley turned to her brother with an annoyed look on her face.

“Yes, we can both see that Andy. Thanks for stating the obvious.” Andrew turned towards her and the two started bickering. Meanwhile, you were still trying to comprehend what was occurring right before your eyes.

“Umm…” as you began to speak, unsure of your next words, the two turned towards you. “So, where are we?”

The two gave each other a confused look and responded simultaneously, “In our home”.

“Home?” That didn’t sound right, the last thing you remember was Andrew and Ashley killing their parents and taking their home. And from the looks of it, this didn’t seem like it was their parent’s house. “Okay…” you responded, yet still unsure.

“We’ll leave you alone for now, but remember you have school in a bit and work a little later on. See you later sis.” The two left, leaving you stunned. School? Work? You don't remember anything about this visual novel having school or work. And what was this about being their sister? You decide to get out of the bed that you were on, and make your way to the door. Once leaving you instantly recognized where you were. This is the apartment from 14 Days with You.

You made your way to what appeared to be the front door of the apartment and left, too lost in your thinking to say goodbye to your “siblings”.

You made your way down to the bottom floor, and went outside to get some fresh air and think things over. You found a bench and sat down.

The Coffin of Andy and Leyley and 14 Days With You are two of three of my favorite visual novels. The only one that's missing is… oh. You know now. Going to school, it all makes sense now. The last one was The Kid at the Back.

Am I already friends with Sol and Ren or do I have to become friends with them? Sighing you decide to get up and start walking.

Wait, I don't even know where the school or my work is! You thought. But it didn’t seem to matter, since your legs seemed to walk on your own.

I played a few more of Nemlei's (Developer of The Coffin of Andy & Leyley) games to sort of get a feel for their design philosophy a bit (typical Ash behavior, everything's a production history). I played No-Good Noelle & Candy Scabs, and poked around Better Half.

Andy & Leyley is their most ambitious project by a country mile, and a good deal more advanced conceptually. It is also their first RPG Maker game, the rest being pure Ren'py VN projects. This was a very smart choice on their part - they love gore & horror style elements, but in a simple VN those elements are going to be carried, in the main, by dialogue, with the occasional splash art. Its hard for that not to overstay its welcome, or come off as a bit too edgy? You can make it work with real design flexes (Doki Doki Literature Club being a classic example) but that is very high skill (DDLC is famously impressive on the coding side). Meanwhile Andy & Leyley gets miles out of the fact that you-as-player physically do all of the actions, and engage with 'bonus' dialogue from the environment as much as you want. You are extending that welcome via choices you make.

Andy & Leyley also seems like their first project to take place in "our world", even if it's a crapsack alt skin version of it. It is another smart choice, as - typical to the relationship-focused VN genre - Nemlei cares about characters first, and that is where all the time goes in these games. Which means the fantasy settings of say No-Good Noelle are inherently shallow; they don't want to spend time developing it all that much. In A&L all that is presumed *except* the relevant differences, which are way easier to drip-feed. The longer length & RPG elements help with that too ofc. And I think it works a little bit better with the toxic dynamics they are so enamored with; a toxic snow fairy/imp dynamic is like, yeah, they are magic creatures, guess they can do that. Fun, but that isn't going to hit the way a Covid-Quarantine metaphor driving you over the edge is going to.

Of course the art has also evolved and all that too; they started making full games in 2019 it seems, had choppy "generic western cute-horror-anime" aesthetics for a few there, couldn't get "adult" character designs to work for Better Hal & Divelethion, but finally broke the barrier on Andy & Leyley, and committed to a more cohesive style with its own identity to boot.

Btw they have very impressive output for a solo artist who is virtually never charging for these products and doing like no social media promotion. They love the grind for stories, I see who they are in every work and respect them immensely for that.
