💚 Exploring the outdoor sculptures of @andersonranchartscenter ~ Ghada Amer Love Grave, 2020 🌱 The letters of the word “LOVE” are dug six feet into the ground, revealing the dichotomy inherent in spelling the word “love” by means of a symbol of death that calls attention to the connections between Eros and Thanatos, between plenitude and emptiness. WE ARE THE ASTEROID II ☄️ continues its American tour. Do we call it climate change? Do we call it an ecological crisis? Ultimately it’s an existential crisis for all living beings on the planet. The WATA series is all about sharing playful “eco-haikus” to remind us of the urgency and seriousness of this existential matter that remains out of sight and out of mind for the majority of the world’s population which lives in urban environments. Debuting as a public art work in 2018 on the @navypierchicago as part of @expochicago WATA II then travelled West to Colorado to participate in a group show at @andersonranchartscenter followed by an appearance on the skis slopes of @aspensnowmass before heading to the campus of the University of @northern_iowa as part of the Aldo Leopold lecture series and supported by their office of sustainability. In Sept of 2020 WATA II took part in the @waterfrontalliance participating in NYC’s Climate Week in lower Manhattan, and is now currently on view through January 2021 at @manacontemporary in Jersey City hosted by Mana’s @monirafoundation WE ARE THE ASTEROID I, II, III and X (locally rented solar powered highway message boards) is a collaboration with the eco-philospher @tim303 the Rita Shea Guffey Chair of English at @riceuniversity and they continue to travel to institutions and public spaces around the the world. An iteration of WE ARE THE ASTEROID X is currently on display at the @kunsthal_kade_amersfoort in the Netherlands in their American art today survey show “This Is America” on view into 2021. O trabalho visa mitigar a divisão entre a África e a América negra; justapondo elementos de ambos os mundos. A obra funciona como uma metáfora para os habitantes da primeira geração. Essa combinação de múltiplas identidades permite que se busque um significado mais verdadeiro de si mesmo.”

“[...] The triple consciousness of “The African,” “The American,” and “The Negro.” There is a constant effort to reconcile these three cultures which compose my identity. From first-hand experience and historical context, the use of culturally significant materials attempts to question, reexamine and discuss the stereotypical notions of race, identity, and culture, which are embedded into our current society. The work aims to mitigate the divide between Africa and Black America; juxtaposing elements from both worlds. The work acts as a metaphor for first generation inhabitants. This combination of multiple identities allows one to search for a truer meaning of self.”
