Maybe im too woke but i im lowkey tired of seeing grantaire, the guy described as extraordinarily "ugly", offten drawn as a poc/with darker skin , in contrast to Enjolras, the guy described as beautiful, who drawn as a white person/with pale skin. It always feel so icky to me as a black person lol, especially with how commen it is.
i think there is always going to be some weird problems when people try to draw a "ugly" and "pretty" character, because beauty standards are so very rooted in racism and colorism, and are also different everywhere, but to have a character who is canonically ugly and white be drawn so offten as a person of color with brown/dark skin, somthing that has historically been deamed as ugly, is very bizarre.
I dont think people do it intentionally, and im not going force you to change the way you draw characaters, draw Grantaire as a poc and Enjolras as white if you want! Who am i to stop you! But like, maybe think about the iffy implications when doing that while drawing him next to a pale ass enjolras LOL
Anyways sincerely- a black les mis fan who is TIRED of seeing black people and other people of color deemed as ugly 😭
#i personally like to see them both as pocs#and i like to think of other ways that could make grantaire “ugly” rather then his physical appearance#idkidk dose this make sense??#also with the “character who is canonically white” is not hating on people drawing white people as pocs i do that shit too#im TERRIBLE at putting my thougths into words LOL#les miserables#les mis#enjolras#grantaire#les mis enjolras#les mis grantaire#les mis fandom#fandom problems#rant

ok so i love les miserables
AND I JUST GOT TO SEE IT FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE NORTH AMERICA TOUR (more specifically Montreal! (yes i flew to an entirely different country to see it)) and i am incredibly attached to enjolras and grantaire so here are just things i saw that made my nails dig into my thighs <3 (not just enjoltaire)
oh my dear months old source of no big sad
this is 90% incoherent rambling (SPOILERS)
- Grantaire had long hair and a long coat i think that deserves its own point
- During Red and Black, Grantaire did the old “Don Juan” with the bottle right in Enjolras’ face (he was not impressed)
- In this same song, Enjolras got really close to R’s face during “don’t let the wine go to your brain”
- Again, in Red and Black, when they tossed Grantaire’s bottle to Enj, teasing him, Grantaire grabbed the bottle in a… way… when he was giving it back to him
- Same song 😭 Grantaire was bouncing on a guy’s lap during the first few verses
- In DYHTPS, Grantaire pulled Gavroche aside away from the students crowding Enjolras (this broke my heart, he clearly loves him and doesn’t want him to be in a war)
- “Glad to do a friend a favor” with a very suggestive hand gesture
- In the “dogs will bark flees will bite”, Grantaire pointed a finger at Enjolras, the former getting real close putting his weapon between them. They got REALLY close
- Gavroche pulled the middle finger at Javert lmao
-Eponine fucking died (i knew that already, seen every bootleg and version available, still hit hard)
- During Eponine’s death Gavroche ran onto the stage, closely followed by Grantaire being held onto by Enjolras
- Gavroche tried approaching Eponine (that’s his sister bro :()) but was stopped and held onto by Grantaire. When she died however, Grantaire quickly bent to hug Gavroche, man the grief was so clear with them both.
- After she died, everyone cleared to their positions but Enjolras and Grantaire, seemingly for Enjolras to try and comfort him, but decided against it quickly and pushed past him. Grantaire placed his hand on his chest in mock offense 😭
- When the attack was about to start, Grantaire mocked and toyed with tied up Javert. When Enjolras called for hold, Grantaire threw his arms around Javert with a “yep! and cue the battle starting immediately when that happened
- During Grantaire’s verse during Drink With Me, it’s back to Enjolras and Grantaire being center stage. Enjolras approached him, held onto his arm and with the same hand moved up to brush R’s hair, which lead to him breaking off the contact and rushing to the other corner of the stage.
-He was followed by Gavroche, who hugged him from behind and then they both fell asleep next to each other :((
- Gavroche fucking died (i knew he did still heartbreaking) and was caught by Enj, who handed him to Grantaire
- During the Gavroche solo, Grantaire stood center stage looking to the crowd, not even flinching when the gun sounded, only turning around when Gavroche was already at the top of the barricade
- He tried shaking him awake :(( then set him down and stared at him :((
- That was until Marius fell, Enjolras rushing to check on him, making Grantaire rush to his side
- R grabbed onto Enj and they both held the back of each other’s necks,, from my angle it looked like their foreheads touched but idk if they would do that but MANNN
-Enjolras fucking died first (no wtf :(( )
- Grantaire fucking died last (BRO.)
- Everyone fucking died bro
- Except Marius and JVJ of course
- Mr Thenardier, instead of singing “This one’s a queer but what can you do”, sang “This one’s a queer, I’ll try it to!” and dipped a guy in the wedding 😭
- The “to love another person is to see the face of god” line always makes me emotional just :((
that’s it haha hopefully y’all enjoy the ramblings, ty for reading this far, i seriously recommend going to watch it if you can it’s truly the most amazing thing i’ve ever seen man 😭 may be biased but i’m serious

Well here it is, part one of my new Enjolras/Grantaire fic, Drink to Forget! I’m super nervous like I said earlier but please please please leave some comments if you enjoy it because I need the encouragement, haha.
First of all general warning that this fic will eventually contain adult content and be 18+. Currently this first part does not contain any mature scenes, so if you’re not in the mood for erotica right now it’s safe to read. However I do have two content warnings to mention (mild thematic spoilers to follow, if you don’t care about content warnings skip the rest of the post and go read the chapter first.)
The first warning is for medical emergency and the things that come with that. It’s not super graphic but just in case you need to know that going in. And number two is alcoholism, which I know everyone knows about Grantaire but this fic really goes into it more than others, so just in case that’s a sensitivity there’s the warning.
I’d also like to take this time to thank a few people who I interviewed for my research for this fic. First is @zelderina who is a nurse and allowed me to interview her all the way back in 2020 when I was planning out this fic. Next is @darthtveitor my bff for letting me ask her a million questions about what it’s like being an emergency trauma patient so I appreciate her being willing to dig through her experiences for that. And lastly a thank you to two people who will never see this who are my brother and sister-in-law who are both medical doctors and answered a bunch of questions about how they would care for a patient in this situation. Thanks guys.
Hope you enjoy part one. It’s either gonna be two or three parts, not sure yet.

I WENT TO SEE LES MIS NATIONAL TOUR!
I am and always have been a huge les mis fan. Today's my birthday and I wanted to go and see Les Mis again because it's so very important to me. THIS WAS AMAZING!!!!!!!!! (9/7/24 Matinee Philadelphia)
my thoughts
-enjolras and grantaire matched each others freak oh my god I love them so much I am unwell. during the barricade scene they pushed their heads together and looked like they was gonna kiss, then enj went to the top and DIED. along with my heart fr
--same with marius and cosette they were both so silly and amazing their relationship is the only thing convincing me that love is real. keep on doing amazing guys <3
-KYLE ADAMS GRANTAIRE OF ALL TIME??????
-valjean hitting that crazy high note when he said 'took the silver, took MY FLIGHT!!!!!!!!!'' like bro it's giving '' the next day Anatole left FOR PETERSBURG!!!!!!!!!!''
-GAVROCHE FLIPPED JAVERT OFF!
-Marius and Grantaire being silly during red & black. I can't explain you had to be there.
-R was the last one alive at the barricade and he ran up, shouted something, and then died too. :(
-R having a tense moment with Enj and then going off the a corner and hitting his fist on the wall in frustration. And then Gav hugging him omg <3
-did i mention kyle adams grantaire of all time (he signed my playbill😎)
-conclusion: it is my life (i did not live until today) i need to see it again (how can I live when we are parted?)

Victor Hugo: not relevant but there is an urgent need for a close-up shot of Enjolras.
Text was copied and pasted from wikisource.
3.4.1, introduction paragraph
Woe to the love-affair which should have risked itself beside him! If any grisette of the Place Cambrai or the Rue Saint-Jean-de-Beauvais, seeing that face of a youth escaped from college, that page's mien, those long, golden lashes, those blue eyes, that hair billowing in the wind, those rosy cheeks, those fresh lips, those exquisite teeth, had conceived an appetite for that complete aurora, and had tried her beauty on Enjolras…
Poor Enj, walks on the street and gets harassed by random passers-by.
Also Victor Hugo, next paragraph: now let’s talk about Combeferre, “He was less lofty, but broader. That’s all. Thank you.”
Enjolras, the believer, disdained this sceptic; and, a sober man himself, scorned this drunkard. He accorded him a little lofty pity. Grantaire was an unaccepted Pylades. Always harshly treated by Enjolras, roughly repulsed, rejected yet ever returning to the charge, he said of Enjolras: "What fine marble!"
Grantaire, are you sure you are there for Enjolras’s faith and (chaste, healthy, firm, upright, hard, candid) nature NOT FOR HIS FACE???
3.4.5, Combeferre’s être-libre big show
Enjolras, whose blue eye was not fixed on anyone, and who seemed to be gazing at space, replied, without glancing at Marius:
Thanks, Victor, for reminding us of something you said four chapters ago.
4.12.3, basically Grantaire’s love confession
Enjolras, who was standing on the crest of the barricade, gun in hand, raised his beautiful, austere face. Enjolras, as the reader knows, had something of the Spartan and of the Puritan in his composition.
Maybe the reader also knows Enjolras has a beautiful and austere face.
4.12.7, Javert’s identity is discovered.
"Spy," said the handsome Enjolras, "we are judges and not assassins."
Javert: …Why?
4.12.8, Le Cabuc’s execution
Enjolras, pale, with bare neck and dishevelled hair, and his woman's face, had about him at that moment something of the antique Themis…
Victor Hugo: I know one minute ago you were not doing anything intense, merely talking to Javert, but now I need you to cosplay Themis, so please get rid of your cravat and dishevel your (beautiful, golden, shining) hair.
Enjolras: …okay.
His dilated nostrils, his downcast eyes, gave to his implacable Greek profile that expression of wrath and that expression of Chastity which, as the ancient world viewed the matter, befit Justice.
Victor Hugo: Killing in the name of justice can easily get us into endless and heated ethical debates, and the issue is further complicated by the very situation, given it is a revolution, where a judicial system has not really been established. Let’s not get into deep water but make our life easier: this is divine justice.
Le Cabuc attempted to resist, but he seemed to have been seized by a superhuman hand.
Le Cabuc: I am armed, and I am evil and impetuous enough to murder someone without a second thought. Am I not supposed to fight this schoolboy?
Victor Hugo: No. You are supposed to be shocked by his beauty. And chastity.
Le Cabuc: Is that something I can tell by LOOKING AT HIM?
Enjolras ceased. His virgin lips closed; and he remained for some time standing on the spot where he had shed blood, in marble immobility.
Marble x2.
Jean Prouvaire and Combeferre pressed each other's hands silently, and, leaning against each other in an angle of the barricade, they watched with an admiration in which there was some compassion, that grave young man, executioner and priest, composed of light, like crystal, and also of rock.
5.1.3
Enjolras reappeared. He returned from his sombre eagle flight into outer darkness. He listened for a moment to all this joy with folded arms, and one hand on his mouth. Then, fresh and rosy in the growing whiteness of the dawn, he said:
…He literally says hey guys, we are going to die now.
Victor Hugo: Yeah I know. But light technician, light on Enjolras please!
5.1.5 barricade speech.
All at once he threw back his head, his blond locks fell back like those of an angel on the sombre quadriga made of stars, they were like the mane of a startled lion in the flaming of a halo, and Enjolras cried…
How can Victor Hugo forget to highlight his revolutionary gold boy’s beauty?
Enjolras paused rather than became silent; his lips continued to move silently, as though he were talking to himself, which caused them all to gaze attentively at him, in the endeavor to hear more. There was no applause; but they whispered together for a long time. Speech being a breath, the rustling of intelligences resembles the rustling of leaves.
No virgin lip this time. Good thing that Victor is learning self-restraint (but not for long, apparently).
5.1.8 the death of sergeant of artillery
And a tear trickled slowly down Enjolras' marble cheek.
Marble x3.
Victor you are using Grantaire’s vocabulary.
5.1.23 the martyrdom of Enjolras
The audacity of a fine death always affects men. As soon as Enjolras folded his arms and accepted his end, the din of strife ceased in the room, and this chaos suddenly stilled into a sort of sepulchral solemnity. The menacing majesty of Enjolras disarmed and motionless, appeared to oppress this tumult, and this young man, haughty, bloody, and charming, who alone had not a wound, who was as indifferent as an invulnerable being, seemed, by the authority of his tranquil glance, to constrain this sinister rabble to kill him respectfully. His beauty, at that moment augmented by his pride, was resplendent, and he was fresh and rosy after the fearful four and twenty hours which had just elapsed, as though he could no more be fatigued than wounded.
(The most obvious evidence that this guy is divine. Human biology DOES NOT work in this way.)
It was of him, possibly, that a witness spoke afterwards, before the council of war: "There was an insurgent whom I heard called Apollo."
Were you at the barricade for the revolution or for something (someone) else???
A National Guardsman who had taken aim at Enjolras, lowered his gun, saying: "It seems to me that I am about to shoot a flower."
Le Cabuc symptom: brain stops functioning properly at the sight of Enjolras’s beauty.
Noise does not rouse a drunken man; silence awakens him. The fall of everything around him only augmented Grantaire's prostration; the crumbling of all things was his lullaby. The sort of halt which the tumult underwent in the presence of Enjolras was a shock to this heavy slumber. It had the effect of a carriage going at full speed, which suddenly comes to a dead stop. The persons dozing within it wake up.
Now we have music fading into a suffocating silence, light focuses on Enjolras, twelve guns arranged in a way according to the rules of one-point perspective. Your turn Grantaire!

So, I saw the French production of Les Misérables at the Théâtre du Châtelet and oh my fucking godddd.
I loved it so much, I was pretty close to the stage so I had a great view (I was on a folding seat tho so my ass was KILLING me but it was worth it lmao)
The set was so rich and cleverly arranged, very detailed and dynamic, i really thought it was impressive (I had only seen in live the staged concert before that so it was a big jump in terms of staging), and the costumes were gorgeous, I would kill to get a more thorough look at them.
The actors were fantastic, Fantine got tears out of me almost immediately, Valjean seemed so gentle and lovely, Cosette and Marius were the cutest, Javert was so driven and intimidating, Enjolras was OOZING righteous fury and determination it was crazy, Gavroche was so funny and playful, Grantaire was more optimistic than he usually is but you get to see him gradually lose hope and that's heartbreaking, The Thénardiers were more sinister than usual though still pretty funny in an awful way if you know what I mean, and Eponine's feelings were so raw I loved it.
As a bilingual french girl, being able to compare the lyrics in the two languages was sooo interesting, and I do sometimes have issues with french songs but those were genuinely soo good, so yeah, loved it.
Extensive yapping below the cut, be warned :
Gavroche's death was AWFUL, he dragged himself all the way back while still trying to sing before collapsing, you could hear people gasping and sobbing
Some actors were entering from the back of the theater, and since I was at the end of the row they were literally right next to me, during the finale an actor was singing almost in my ear while waving his flag lmao, it was so cool
The Amis de L'ABC's death was as painful as ever, shout out to the guy playing Enjolras who had to stay hanging from one leg for at least a good minute, i wouldn't have wanted to be in his place lmao
Valjean actually lifting the cart was super cool btw, that's my favorite senior citizen with ungodly strenght right there
The prostitues being more solidary with Fantine than the factory women and trying to protect her from Javert was a nice touch i think
The audience couldn't help snorting when Eponine sang the french version of "little he knows little he sees" because she was saying something like "y comprend rien" in a tone that clearly read something like "is he fucking stupid wtf", even though it's actually pretty sad
When Valjean and Javert were fighting right after Fantine's death, the nuns were trying to stop them (and more specifically Javert because mf had a whole-ass rifle, man was NOT playing) from killing each other, so when Valjean knocked the gun out of Javert's hands one of the nun grabbed it, panicked, looked around and hid it under a patient's mattress lmao.
Marius deadass nearly knocked himself uncouncious against the wall of Valjean's property while climbing it, it was weirdly endearing to see and sooo in character
During Empty Chairs At Empty Tables (Seul Devant Ces Tables Vides), instead of the students coming back in the background to bring candles, their shadows were projected behind Marius and somehow it made me cry even harder (also it fitted the whole "phantom shadows on the floor" bit super well)
Javert's suicide had me clutching my pearls because I actually thought for a second he'd fall for real
During the wedding scene, Thénardier tried to make the orchestra play again because he interupted them, called "maestro", but it was a woman so she corrected him and the whole audience clapped for her for a good minute, you could see Thénardier's actor trying not to smile it was pretty cute
Grantaire was so playful and touchy with all the Amis it was adorable, he kept fucking around just for their amusement and urgh I love him so much you know ? Also he took such good care of Gav and crumbled when he died :(
Gavroche was soooo insolent, it took two people to drag him away from Javert when he was roasting him on the barricade (also right after Stars Gavroche said that Javert thought he was "le p'tit Jésus" lmaoo)
Enjolras tried to hug Grantaire after Gav's death but R flinched away </3
Also one of the students (idk which one it was, I think it might've been Courf or Joly but i'm not sure) noticed Eponine dying in Marius' arms and ran to get bandages but he was too late :(
When Enjolras asks all the women and fathers to leave, the scene where everyone was saying goodbye was heartbreaking, you didn't even needed to hear them talk, I really liked that they took the time to show that
I swear Enjolras had so much energy, man was RUNNING around to get his point across (My mom elbowed me so hard when he started singing, she knows what's up)
Cosette actually recognized Eponine, and for a second they just stared at each other like "oh, shit, I know you"
I know the students also being guests for the wedding is because they needed people to fill the roles but I like to think there's a symbolic behind it and they were there in spirit because I am in Denial tm
Also Grantaire doing everything and anything to catch Enjolras' attention during Red And Black !!!! Joking around, patting or downright grabbing his arm, bumping shoulders, constantly calling his name....my boys !!! I love them so much <3

so guys a little while ago i came up with a les mis artistic au that I think would be interesting for you to acknowledge! so basically the idea of it is this:
everything takes place in modern france. les amis + cosette + eponine (basically the youngsters mentioned in the second volume (maybe even montparnasse)) are studying in the académie des beaux-arts on two different faculties, visual arts and music. i am yet to figure out who studies what, but some things are already obvious to me, so I would like to share some of them with you
• first of all the dean of the faculty of visual arts is valjean, the dean of the one of music — javert. their approaches to what is art and how one should give a proper education on it are quite different — opposite, even, because where valjean strives for freedom in self-expression and his students’ own unique understanding, javert is equally devoted to precision (which is, for every performer who I have a misfortune to be myself, is as beneficial as it is painful, sometimes even destructive to the very purpose of performing music)
of course it would be silly to expect such a confrontation would not affect their students.
• so, very vaguely: enjolras, combeferre, courfeyrac (because i couldn’t force myself to separate the great trio of The leader, The guide and The centre™), jehan, marius and cosette are all in the orchestra.
- enjolras is a conductor, of course
- combeferre is the first violin. sometimes when enjolras by some miracle is not present at the rehearsal, he fulfills his duties — and, believe me, his tolerating attitude really is a blessing to the musicians
- courfeyrac is either a timpanist or a pianist-accompaniator (both options make perfect sense in my mind and I cannot decide)
- jehan is a harpist (feel free to make your own suggestions, but I tried to express his passion for middle ages, romantism and his poetical nature with this choice)
- marius is a violinist because I thought it would be hilarious for him to play soppy melodies whenever he’s pining on cosette
- cosette herself is a cellist. at first, i was going to make her an opera singer (soprano), then i was contemplating on her being a violinist as well, but then I thought — goddamn it, i love women who play cello, and it would reflect her character so well (which i of course am planning to develop a bit from what monsieur hugo provided us with), and I just don’t want to see her as something high-pitched! the solemn and a bit sorrowful, yet so noble and beautiful timbre of cello seems to suit her image in my mind.
• as for the artists, here we have OBVIOUSLY my man grantaire, eponine, joly + bossuet, feuilly and bahorel. most of them are painters, with few exceptions: for example, joly is a sculptor in my mind, and feuilly does decorative art (also I am sorry he is also a student here and joly is not a medic it is all only for the sake of the composition)
i don’t want to make this post too long so I shall continue in the next ones! i hope this idea is entertaining enough for you my fellow readers. also i think it is pretty obvious that i have little to no knowledge at all about visual arts so please be free to comment your own thoughts
(also i am new to the fandom (although I’ve been into les mis for quite some time now) and I would really appreciate any sort of communication) :)
#les mis#les mis au#les amis de l'abc#les miserables#i don’t know what tags to use#les mis fandom#i just want to make friends#and also i am a musician who is non-practising at the moment so yes i am overcompensating

Grantaire: *already ran out the door*
-
Combeferre: I know every song to ever exist, doesn't matter when it was made.
Enjolras: Oh, yeah?
Grantaire: Finish this; I don't cook, I don't clean-
Combeferre: but let me tell you how got this ring,
Combeferre, Grantaire, and Courfeyrac, who came out of no were: GOBBLE ME, SWALLOW ME, DRIP DOWN THE SIDE OF ME-
-
*undercover*
Eponine: You don't think can fight because I'm a girl.
Marius: 'Ponie I don't think you can fight because you're in a wedding dress. To be fair, don't think Bahorel could fight in that either.
Bahorel: No, but I'd make a bomb ass wife.
-
Valjean: You're pouting.
Javert: I'm not pouting, I'm brooding.
Valjean: That's how pretty men pout.
-
Valjean, picking up his phone: Javert? I'm kind of busy right now-
Javert: Do you think drinking thirty-six cans of Redbull consecutively would heighten my senses or would I just die?
Valjean:
Valjean: I'm on my way.
-
Eponine: Bitches be like "I'm baby" but have childhood trauma and were neglected.
Eponine: Like what do you know about being baby? You were forced to grow up from an early age.
Eponine:
Everyone else:
Eponine: It's me. I'm bitches.
Gavroche, sighing: We know.
-
Feuilly: Y'all ever get so tired you see spiders?
Grantaire: Me when I take seventeen Benadryl and start seeing the Hat Man.
Jehan: THE WHAT?
Grantaire: Oh, so this is suddenly not a safe space?
-
Courfeyrac: Relationships should be 50/50; Combeferre cooks dinner while I sit on the counter looking pretty.
-
Bahorel: Not everyone likes you, Montparnasse. You aren't Feuilly.
Montparnasse: Not everyone likes Feuilly??
Enjolras, coming out of no where: Who?
Montparnasse:
Bahorel, cracking his knuckles: we need names, Montparnasse.
-
Musichetta: Can you two cut me some slack? I'm sort of in love.
Joly: I'm sorry, but that's really not our problem.
Musichetta: I'm in love with you both.
Bossuet, blushing: Oh... that brings us into the loop a little.
-
Combeferre: I fell-
Courfeyrac: From heaven?
Combeferre: No, I literally fell-
Courfeyrac: In love with me the moment you saw me
Combeferre: MY ARM IS BROKEN, COURFEYRAC
Courfeyrac: Ok, but am I pretty? Be honest.
-
*Combeferre and Grantaire in a casino*
Combeferre: Grantaire, we're about to get kicked out-
Grantaire: Shush!
Combeferre: We gotta-
Grantaire: Shut up!
Combeferre: R-
Grantaire: Shh! Shush, shush, shush! Do you hear that?
Combeferre: Wha- are you drunk?
Grantaire: Yes, but listen!
Combeferre:
Grantaire:
Grantaire: It's the sound of me not giving a fuck.
-
Javert: We all have our demons.
Javert, pointing at Les Amis: These ones are mine.
-
Valjean, helping Marius stand after being wounded: You need to be careful, you're loosing a lot of blood-
Marius, loopy: I'm not "loosing" it, I know exactly where it is!
*Marius points to the puddle of his blood on the floor.*
Valjean: Oh, dear Lord, I should just leave you.
-
Enjolras, making his third cup of coffee: Why are my hands so shaky?
Combeferre, on his fifth: Your skeleton is ready to hatch.
-
Montparnasse, to Feuilly: What's the first thing you notice when someone approaches you?
Bahorel, holding Feuilly's hand: The audacity.
-
Combeferre: Did you know-
Bahorel: That somethings are better left unsaid?
Combeferre: Nice try.
-
Eponine: Do you have any idea how dangerous I'd be if I had zero self doubt?
-
Jehan: If I were a drink, I'd be cherry vanilla coke. If you were a drink, what would you be?
Grantaire: Bleach.
Bahorel: Blood
Montparnasse: arsenic
Feuilly: Alright, calm down edgelords.
-
Grantaire: Dad didn't raise a quitter!
Joly: I thought your dad left?
Grantaire: Which is why I'm quitting.
-
Grantaire to Combeferre: Do you think I'm ugly?
Combeferre: It's not about looks, R. What's valuable is on the inside.
Grantaire, touched: Aww...
Combeferre: For example, someone's heart.
Grantaire: You're a good friend, Combeferre -
Combeferre: It can be priced at over one million US dollars, you know.
Grantaire:
-
Grantaire: Ok, here's my wishlist.
Musichetta: This is surprisingly reasonable.
Joly: We could probably get all this by Christmas.
Enjolras: Oh, so no one's gonna ask why I'm on the list?
Grantaire: That's more of a hope.
Enjolras: I still don't get why I'm on the list?
Bossuet, to Grantaire: Are you sure you don't want someone else?
Grantaire: Nope, I want him.
Enjolras: CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY I'M OM THE LIST?!
-
*playing Would You Rather?*
Eponine: Ok, R. Would you rather die or-
Grantaire: Die.
Cosette: She hasn't even-
Grantaire: Die.
Marius: Grantaire, we talked about this...
-
Enjolras: I was born for politics.
Enjolras: have great hair and I'm great at lying.
-
Bahorel: I've thought about taking swim classes for adults, but honestly that's sadder than just drowning.
-
Combeferre, to Grantaire: I need 45 minutes away from you, and then we can be best friends again.
-
Montparnasse: *raises eyebrows *
Jehan: Put those back down

Chapter 2 of "Even If There Are Monsters" Director's Commentary
I wrote a Les Mis × Dracula AU! You can find the commentary for Chapter 1 here.
Now onto Chapter 2!
Combeferre as the Dr. Seward-figure is kinda funny to me 😭 because I feel like they'd have HATED each other. And is a big reason why I didn't have a Renfield character either; not only would the Renfield side plot taken way too much time, but I also wholeheartedly believe that Combeferre would not have been an asylum director 😔. So a regular doctor he is!
Speaking of Combeferre, that implied One-sided Combeferre/Enjolras tag is a callback to Lucy's rejection of Dr. Seward. Didn't include the scene bc its fanfiction; readers would already be familiar with Combeferre’s personality! No need for any humiliation /lh. But for those curious in the lore of this AU, Combeferre had indeed confessed to Enjolras years ago, only to be kindly rejected. Clearly their friendship has not suffered, but Combeferre will always be a little fond of him. As we can see in the later chapters.
There's a lot of build-up around Enjolras's illness and his relationship with Grantaire, firstly bc yay exR ❤️ and secondly, I've always loved the parallel between Arthur/Lucy and Jonathan/Mina, and though both couples deserve happy endings, A/L was simply just the right person, not enough time trope 😔 and so I wanted to gun for this parallel even further by having exR and marisette go on the same "journey": one side of the couple suffering/missing, while the other is frantic with worry.
Anyone familiar with Dracula would also know I've completely mucked up the vampire lore/logic/timeline of the OG novel too. Well, with Renfield gone and me not wanting to basically regurgitate plot, I figured I'd just create my own vampire lore 😭 They can come in uninvited now apparently! Yay!
Prouvaire as the Van Helsing-figure also means that he is now their equal instead of a High Ranking Professor with Multiple PhDs Etc. Thus, he has a personal stake in the matter from the very beginning, making him hesitate when investigating bc surely his friend couldn't be going through what he thinks he's going through...right? And also makes for a great friendship with Cosette! I love writing the both of them together; they would have had tons of lovely conversations in canon 🫶 too bad they're left to face the Horrors here.
This was a shorter commentary than yesterday's but tbf, this chapter is quite short in generally. Was unsure where to cut it but decided to do so just before the next rising action (sleepwalking outdoors!) Hope you guys enjoyed nevertheless :D
Come and find the next chapter's commentary tmr!!

Hey y'all! The 20th chapter of Home (and its Connotations) is here! To celebrate making it this far, I'm encouraging folks to send me their headcanons or questions about my fic! Or ask me what mine are! Anyways, enjoy chapter 20, there's an excerpt below:
When Grantaire and Courfeyrac get there, they’re immediately called back to where Enjolras is staying (the perks of knowing someone who works there). The moment Combeferre sees them, he’s scooping Courf up in a tight hug.
R meets his eyes over Courf’s shoulder and gives him a sympathetic grimace. “How are things?”
“They’re okay,” says Combeferre hoarsely.
Grantaire turns his gaze to the window into the room where Enjolras is. He’s lying in a bed, hooked up to an IV again, and R has a horrible feeling that he’s back here again on that first night they’d discovered Enjolras, waiting for Marius to call them with an update, only getting information thirdhand. He forces himself out of it. He’s here this time, and this is different. Enjolras still looks awful of course, but much better than he did the first time R saw him back. The bruises on his face are fading, and he looks like he’s eaten a vegetable recently. There’s even something about him that looks slightly more… relaxed maybe? Though Grantaire could be imagining that.
There’s also a man sitting next to him. R’s first thought is that it’s his dad and he feels a jolt of panic before he realizes this man looks nothing like Enjolras’s dad. He’s sitting next to Enjolras, talking to him, and his posture is almost… timid? No, not the right word at all. But there’s something about the way he holds himself, like he’s trying to make himself smaller.
“Who’s that guy?” he asks.
Combeferre grimaces. “That’s Javert.”
“Who?” asks R, at the same time that Courf exclaims, “The cop friend?”
“The cop friend,” says Ferre, looking mildly nauseated. Then, seeing the flabbergasted look R must be giving him, “Former cop friend.”
“Valjean’s friends with an ex-cop?” asks Grantaire. “Wasn’t he like, in jail for a long time.”
“He was.” Combeferre nods.
“This guy was like, one of the reasons he went to jail in the first place,” says Courf. “At least, I think? I don’t know, I got all this secondhand from Ferre, sorry, you tell it.”
“I honestly don’t know if that’s right or not,” says Ferre, “But he was his parole officer. And I think he worked where Valjean was imprisoned? It’s unclear, I was so confused when he was telling me I didn’t retain anything.”
“What the fuck,” says R. Though, to be fair, if anyone was going to befriend his former jailor, it would be Mr. Valjean.

Another day another comic to talk about!
This is a French Comic illustrated by Houy Raymond and published in 1953 by Vedette, It’s volume 5 of the "FanFan" Collection.
Oh wow The Conventionist! He looks so much younger here.
I think this is the only comic I've seen that has this chapter so far.
Look at my beautiful women, they look sooo well.
I love Javert's expression here but why does he look kinda sad.. since when does this **** have feelings??
The way he doesn't like the whole thing but accepts it at the end and gets his best nap.
Aww this is adorable and I like the colors, they are comfortable.
Yeah give me some Mabeuf moments with Marius!! always happy to see more of him. It's sad when one of the important characters is so forgotten.
THEODULE!!!!
He looks great as always and I love how this comic contains moments of him when his character is not important to the story lol
He has two moments, when he comes to visit his aunt and she asks him to spy on Marius and when she later introduces him to M. Gillenormand and he sits with him to listen to his empty talk.
Seriously just look at his face, I'm sure he regretted sitting with him.
Bless the illustrator for giving Montparnasse these lips and that elegant look.
and of course this moment when Valjean kicks his ass and gives him a fatherly admonition bc it’s ICONIC.
and here are my guys Les Amis who all look like they're wearing a liberty cap.
The way he stands on the table to prove how great Napoleon is ASDJFKASIKDASDF THIS IS SOOOO MARIUS.
I know that Azelma is younger than Cosette and Eponine but she looks like a baby here.
ok why are all the Thenardiers' children blond?? I want an explanation RIGHT NOW.
You don't know how much I love this moment. It's hard to explain. I just love them more than you can imagine.
The audacity he has to ask for water lol.. man ur a spy just shut up and stand there fr.
I can't believe they're still going to kill him after he showed them his chest.. It's Enjolras' chest PEOPLE.
The hilarious thing about this part is that Javert doesn’t seem interested in Valjean’s musty smell and makes him JUST SIT NEXT TO HIM.
and Hugo completes the story as if it’s a very normal thing.
Whatever the ending absolutely breaks my heart, but the way Cosette embraces and cares for her father warms my heart and I know it makes the ending ten times worse but... yeah.

1, 6 and 12 for that choose violence ask game ;)
1. the character everyone gets wrong. if i hear one more person blame paris for the trojan war i cannot be held responsible for my actions. admittedly this has gotten better since i started (a) reading more and (b) interacting with the (very few) paris-lovers of tumblr <3
6. which ship fans are the most annoying? mmm that's tough. and also colored by my aromantic way of reading old literature. i really don't like enjoltaire (from les mis). i don't understand why it's so popular. but everyone else loves it!!! so much!!! please help me. (also i read enjolras as aroace bc I'M aroace, so. there is that, too. tbh i think this one's on me but still.)
12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them. my friend do you even have to ask???? you KNOW the answer to this!!! it's paris of troy ofc it's paris of mother-flipping troy. and as to why ... listen if you can read paris in anything (except for frigging DICTYS u g h) and not see how silly and dumb he is ... then i am so sorry (i am choosing violence) but you must be blind!! he's just a guy!!!! he keeps getting put in Situations!! and through all of these Situations he either stays bright and cheerful and positive (like when hector insults him in the iliad) or he starts crying (like in ovid's version of the judgement in heroides 16). like that's so relatable. anyways i like how this one connects to the first one. he is unpopular bc everyone gets him wrong. listen i love hector as much as the next guy here but he is Mean To His Siblings okay. he loves his family, he would (did) die for andromache and scamandrius, but he is a Mean Brother. personally this does not detract from his charm bc i am a Mean Sister so yk. i can relate. and also i think he probably doesn't understand (or like) the reasons paris has to do anything he does. but paris does have his reasons and unlike hector i DO understand and like and appreciate those reasons. please people i love paris so much he does not deserve the hate.
#thanks for the ask!!!!#i love being ASKED to yell about paris <3#ask tag#talk tag#littlesparklight#we are not mutuals but know that i love you like one <3#paris of troy#greek mythology#anti enjoltaire#(i'm sorry i like enj too much to ship him)#the iliad#gonna go ahead and also tag this#hector of troy

🌹🌹🌹
hi bestie tysm for asking <33333 you will get a few unrelated deep end snippets hehe
He had thought he was an only child; now he has a sister. He had thought he was honest; now he’s a liar. He had thought he hated Grantaire; now he isn’t sure where he ends and Grantaire begins. Every truth he took for granted is now false. All these years Grantaire has been shouting at him that he sees the world in black and white, well, joke’s on him, because now all Enjolras has got are shades of grey.
“I would argue that you’re the pragmatic one, not me,” says Enjolras. “I figure you’re the pragmatist to my idealist.” Grantaire snorts. “More like I’m the immovable object to your unstoppable force.”
But Courfeyrac is just getting started. “Seriously. I appreciate psychosexual mind games as much as the next guy. Just, next time, can you have your odd sexually-tense conversations where I can hear them?” “Really?” says Enjolras. “You want to talk about my psychosexual mind games right now, Courf? Because I think that might be a better conversation for you to have with your boyfriend and his girlfriend.” Courfeyrac laughs. “Don’t deflect. I’m not the one speedrunning Pride and Prejudice at karaoke night.”
for every "🌹" received in my inbox i'll post one random sentence a snippet from a random WIP i'm currently writing!

Enjolferre deserve indeed more epic fics, you're right. In consolation, do you have any headcanons about them?
they deserve so many fics and they deserve to be soft and deserve to be in love. I am writing the fic I want to see in the world. Should take between a week and 11 months
Consolation Enjolferre headcanons below:
It took forever for the two of them to finally fall in love. Combeferre is very very aroace spec, and for a long time he thought his feelings for Enjolras were the same platonic feelings he'd always had. It was only after talking to Courfeyrac when he was like "Everyone wants to have hour long make out sessions with their best friend! Right! Right?????" And Courf was like. Combeferre. Do you want to make out with me. And Ferre was like oh shit.
Meanwhile, Enjolras is very very arospec, so his realisation is a lot less "I want to make out with my best friend" and a lot more bolting upright in the middle of the night like "I want to fall asleep next to my best friend and wake up next to him and hold his hand and maybe also marry him for reasons that aren't tax related?????? I don't know what to do with this????!!!!!"
Courfeyrac is so tired of getting middle of the night calls from both of them. Just kiss, you morons.
(I can't be bothered explaining how they actually end up together lmfao so consider this a timeskip placeholder)
Their first date was very simple and sweet but it had a somewhat unexpected ending. They were walking back from the restaurant and some guy trips and smacks his head off the pavement right in front of them so Combeferre had to go into Doctor Sexy MD mode right there in the middle of the street while Enjolras sat on a wall 20 metres away because medical stuff makes him kind of queasy lol
Enjolras is the one person who can locate Combeferre's glasses at all times. Ferre literally just has to say "Where are my-" and they're already being handed to him, unfolded and cleaned.
So many stupid little inside jokes. Someone will make an offhand comment about cucumbers or something and Ferre will turn and raise his eyebrows and Enjolras will be stifling giggles into his palm, and no one else has any idea what is going on. They don't bother trying to explain- You just had to be there
They date for three months and then one day they just decide "Marriage for tax reasons? Marriage for tax reasons." Good for them.
Everyone thinks they're kind of an odd couple because their idea of date night is going to the library together and stopping off to volunteer at the soup kitchen on their way home, and they're also not the most physically affectionate of people, but they also exude this warmth together that nine times out of ten, people can tell they're together just from looking at them interacting

It's still more sweet if it's all in vain
As the end is getting near, Combeferre and Courfeyrac discuss hope and loyalty at the barricade.
Aka my fic for barricade day ! I was originally going with something else entirely (see tags / notes for more info) but I am very happy how this one turned out
And yes it still counts as a barricade day fic because it's not midnight yet shhh
Find it on Ao3 here !
Usual tw warning for barricade day : mentions of violent death, main character death and graphic descriptions of violence. Stay safe guys <3
It was all calm. Maybe too calm.
Combeferre was sitting on top of the barricade, looking down at the street, empty and lifeless before him. It was only dawn, and everything was bathed in an orange glow. Ironically, Combeferre was facing west, meaning that the sun was rising behind the barricade, and that end of the street appeared surrounded by a halo of light.
Next to Combeferre was Courfeyrac, his chin resting on his knees, a thoughtful look in his eyes as kept fidgeting with his hat, putting it either on his head or in front of him. Both of them had been sitting in a comfortable silence for a while, which was more than uncommon for the latter.
At the other end of the barricade stood Enjolras, silently contemplating alternatively the street and the space in front of the café. He, too, had been silent since the five men had left the barricade. His face was as unreadable as usual, but Combeferre knew him well enough to perceive that, behind his severe attitude, his look could almost be qualified as melancholic. When his two friends had tried to call him, it was as through he couldn't even hear them.
Courfeyrac was once again the first one to break the silence.
"You know, if this is to be the end of the world, I always imagined it to be different. More sensational, at least. So we could enjoy it properly."
Without moving, his friend answered with a small smile on his lips : "And in what ways does this disappoint you now ?"
Courfeyrac shrugged in response : "It is taking too long." He tilted his head on the side to look at the entrance of the café. "And some of us can not even be here to enjoy it."
Combeferre didn't need to turn, nor did he even want to. He knew what his friend was looking at. The table at the other end of the Corinthe; the bodies they had no choice but to lay down on them, covered by a white blanket Enjolras had found God knew where.
Bahorel.
He could still remember the agony that had filled his heart as he watched Bahorel fall back in the barricade, the fatal wound that had killed him almost invisible on the red of his shirt. His only consolation was knowing that he would most likely get to see his friend again in less than a few hours.
Still not taking his eyes off the street in front of him, Conbeferre simply answered :
"Enjolras would tell you that is the cost of freedom. We know some of us have to die, only because we wish for a better future for this world."
Courfeyrac turned to him with an inquisitive look in his eyes.
"And what would Combeferre tell me ?"
So many things.
Combeferre was about to answer that he agreed with Enjolras. That freedom, and the light of the future, were all he had ever looked forward to ; that all of them had always known their life was the price they must be ready to pay for it. Because after all, what else was there to die for ? Except at this moment, he knew this wasn't the answer Courfeyrac was waiting for.
Looking back to the Corinthe he could see Enjolras, an austere look still on his face. He had been joined by Feuilly, who was gesturing to the top of the barricade and, from what Combeferre could make out of his voice, inquiring about the number of men and weapons they had left. His heart clenched as he remembered the one thing that had really been on his mind since the previous day : the face of his best friend, one he had known for so many years, looking down at the man he had just killed, an overwhelming sadness in his eyes.
Back then Combeferre had claimed he would always follow him, no matter what fate this should lead him to. And as much as Combeferre hated violence, he still believed those words.
So, as Courfeyrac placed a soft hand on his arm, still looking at him in expectancy, all he could answer was :
"I couldn't think of any other people I would rather die with."
For a moment here Courfeyrac seemed ready to add something, a strange glint in his brown eyes that were focused on Combeferre's face. However, he let his hand fall down and, biting his bottom lip, simply nodded in acknowledgement.
As he stood up and seemed about to leave and go back inside the café, Combeferre tried to hold him back by grabbing his left wrist.
"It is too late for us to have regrets now anyway, my friend. By noon-"
Combeferre found himself unable to finish this sentence. It seemed useless now, to try and conceal what both of them already knew. Yet like the others, he wanted to preserve a spark of hope, to think that the men inside the barricade still had a chance. Because at the end of the day, if they couldn't even believe in that, how many of them would have the strength to keep on fighting ?
By noon this may all be over.
"No one is coming anymore, are they ?"
The question called for no answer, yet Combeferre turned to his best friend with a bitter smile. He couldn't even tell how much it broke his heart that even Courfeyrac, ever the optimistic, had given up on hope. But before he could answer, Courfeyrac spoke again, his eyes fixed on the horizon and a new, softer light in his eyes :
"You know what Prouvaire would tell us if he were still on this barricade ?"
Following his look, Combeferre could do nothing but nod, his throat tightening at the mention of their friend, as Courfeyrac added :
"It's still more sweet if it's all in vain."
Combeferre softly answered : "But it is not in vain, my friend. This is why we are here, you and I. This is why Prouvaire and Bahorel have already left us. This is what Enjolras told us earlier, what we truly believe in. We must die here, yes, but do not think that will be in vain. A sacrifice is never in vain. We are like the light of the star, a light that hasn't reached the earth yet. But it will one day, and this day all will be changed, just like a new dawn, a new sun rising. And this day, I promise, men shall be truly happy."
In response Courfeyrac offered him a sad smile, so far from the beaming, humorous one Combeferre had grown to be used to over the years, yet still a smile. And at this moment, it seemed bright as a star.
As Enjolras and Feuilly started making their way toward them, Combeferre muttered Enjolras's words to himself once again, his gaze fixed on the clouds dotting the morning sky, now turning to a pale blue color.
"We shall be happy..."
That was what he thought later when he saw, down the street, the national guards bringing in not just one, but two cannons, and felt his heart miss a bit as the realization finally struck him.
None of them was going to make it out alive.
That was what kept him from screaming his heart out when he saw Gavroche fall down one time, then get up only to fall down again. Only a few meters away from the barricade, yet too far to run to him and bring the boy back to safety. All he could do instead was cling to Courfeyrac as hard as he could, refusing to let another of his friends die in front of his eyes.
That was the only thing that kept him from going mad as he had to watch, through his tears, Joly fall down, his face red with blood, followed shortly by Bossuet, shot trying to run to his best friend.
Those were the words he heard when the bullets pierced him, over the screams of his friends, over Enjolras yelling his name, over Courfeyrac's agonizing cry, as he looked up to the sky that was now as bright as his friend's smile had been, so little time ago. An eternity ago.
We shall be happy.
And even if he couldn't be here to see it, he knew it was a sight worth dying for.
#so for the context last year i decided i was gonna write a cool marius-centric fic for barricade day 2023#well unsurprisingly it has been sitting in my drafys untouched for 12 months#so instead i wrote this today#hope you guys enjoy because i still really liked writing it !#barricade day#barricade day 2023#les mis#les miserables#combeferre#courfeyrac#enjolras#barricade boys
