I Love Matthew Fairchild aka Incoherent Thoughts about Chain of Iron (2021) by Cassandra Clare

I made one of these rant-rave reviews for SJM's book so check it out if you want, no pressure tho lmao.

Aight so I finished Chain of Iron last night and OMG I HAVE TO YELL like I loved it sooo much like yooo, I have a lot to say. I know the book is new so... beware for spoilers plebs.

Also context: I been reading the Shadowhunter books since I was 12 and I'm 19 now *insert dead emoji face* so yeah, I'm just so happy rn with where the Chronicles have come and the fact that they’re still ongoing *insert uwu face*. I remember when in like 2014-2015 or something when Cassandra Clare teased that Will and Tessa's kids' generation was gonna get a trilogy set in Edwardian London, loosely based on Great Expectations, and holy hell? I think that was perhaps one of the best days of my life considering how much I adore The Infernal Devices (that trilogy really changed the way I see YA literature... don't ask cus I won't shut up about it) (also yes I read TMI and loved it too but there's a “generation gap” between TMI and the other Shadowhunter books stylistically so don't ask me about that either cus I also won't shut up).

Anyway, shoo from here if you want a critical essay on Chain of Iron. I'm not providing that, this is just me raving here for the fun.

Listen... I want the bulk of this to just be two main things: The Matthew Situation, and then all the literary and judeo-christian meta aspects of it.

BUT I ALSO NEED TO TALK ABOUT EVERYTHING ELSE SO FRICK LET'S JUST START WITH THE OBVIOUS SHIT LIKE THE PLOT AND WHATEVER

Okay, the plot and writing and shit, let's get that out of the way:

The WHOLE Jack-the-Ripper-esque ambiance was just sooooo good man wow like I did not expect the book to take this cold turn but it worked so well. There was such a contrast between Jamie and Cordelia's warm little house and then the cold winter and the stabbings and shit and it felt like a nice little callback to the actual Ripper phenomenon that preceded them and a nod to the Whitechapel Fiend story from Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy.

Bitch OFC that whole thing with Wayland was a set-up like nawww that was too easy to spot and I get why Cordelia feels like shit about it.

Dawg Lucie was just the Among Us imposter here in that my girl was just venting and sneaking around with dead people and I was like nooooo girl run, don't deal with Fade this is a set-up THINK ABOUT JULES LUCIE THAT'S LIKE YO GREAT-GRANDSON *sobs* but yeah anyway my girl has death powers she gonna kill some bitches next book.

You see that confrontation between Lilith and Belial? MASTERPIECE DIALOGUE like this was the point within which I was just like "yo is this the book of Genesis or a YA Fantasy novel" like when Lilith said "I may have been cast out but I did not fall" like??????????????????? I YELLED she did not have to END Belial like that. What a bad bitch.

More on Lilith and Belial... "You, who brought nations into darkness? Shall I finally be able to tell the infernal realms you have gone mad, lost even the image of the Creator." HAHAHHAHAHA SHE SAID "YO BELIAL GO GET SOME THERAPY AND GET OFF MY ASS" LIKE??????

Ughhhh yasss Clare has improved writing diverse characters in this book compared to in The Dark Artifices in my opinion... I'm not gonna expand on it cus ain't nobody got time for that but like, I enjoyed how she wove Persian poetry and tales into the story and the way in which she writes Cordelia and Alistair. They're not caricatures of Persian people but rather multi-faceted beings who also happen to be Persian and I appreciate that. Also, Alistair and Thomas and Anna and Ariadne were just so fun and interesting to read as coupbles but also as individuals. She really higlighted diversity in a very natural manner. All I need is a hijabi character and I’ll die a happy woman lmao.

The level of META man like the references to Classics and art (I swear, she might have compared Matthew to angels out of Caravaggio AND Rosetti AND Boticelli paintings and I Am Living For It) and just all the quotes from holy books and shit omg I love it here like you really feel catapulted into the time period, she draws reference to external art and philosophy so well and I feel like she upped the notch on it in this book (didn’t know that was possible but it was the prose is BEAUTIFUL, archaic, but not pretentiously so). No, like the characters live in their OWN worlds of literature and art and history in the way we are living in THEIRS. They quote Wilde and Milton while we'll quote Clare. It's awesome.

This is an unusually structuralist take even from me but: I like the way the milieu social of the book, i.e., the high society Edwardian circles and their values, have a direct influence on the plot. James and Cordelia got married because society’s values essentially forced them to, not a demon. Cordelia abandons Jamie at the end of Iron because her shame as a woman in society and fear for her reputation made her, not a demon. Thomas and Alistair can't be together solely because of how Alistair tarnished the reputation of the Fairchilds and Lightwoods by using the horror of infidelity against them. Issues relating to marriage, gender roles, etc, stemming DIRECTLY from the time period rule the sequence of events to the same degree as the epic fantasy aspects (demons, Princes of Hell, the lore itself) do and I LOVE that dear God above.

OKAY THE GOOD SHIT LET US TALK ABOUT CHARACTERS AND SHIPS (N.B. but imma discuss Matthew and the Fairstairs situation separately below this portion):

Alistair's redemption arc: No, cus Alistair's redemption arc is honestly amazing. He really did change and it's not like his betterment as a person was linked to any one heroic deed but rather he simply decided he wanted to be better especially for his family and he decided to become a proper protective son, a caring brother, and an amiable friend. He fully owned up to his Malfoy tendencies and apologized without expecting forgiveness. He shows how he cares in the little ways and omg it's so sweet and tender. I really do want him to love himself now and be embraced by Matthew especially and the rest of the Thieves.

Dawg Lucie and Jesse are so funny to me like it's so hilarious how this girl fell in love with a whole ass ghost that no one else knows about like HHAHA. Are Lucie and Jesse my ult ship ever? Nah, but it's nothing to do with Clare, it's just that their relationship happened pretty quick and feels quite like something epicly romantic that Lucie herself would write. I just like slow burn and friends-to-lovers the most from Clare. To be honest part of me just wanted Lucie to not have a romantic arc all together but like, it's all good, I'm not complaining.

Okay Grace- like yooooooooooo I never hated her yunno. She has been abused and isolated all her life. It's not that she is a bad person, but rather that she does not know what being a person even entails. Can't even say she's a “doll” of a person cus she's never even been pampered like one by her family. I really started understanding her motivations since when they gave us her half-childhood with Jesse. I want better for her but cmon can she REALLY be saved???

GRACE X CHRISTOPHER *pretends to be shocked*... Okay, sometime in the middle of the Dark Artifices series some big brain put together a very thorough family tree of the families and like, it clearly showed that Grace and Christopher got married so like, lmfaooooo, I knew this was coming one way or another, but the journey to this ship is more important than the destination. Like in a way Christopher is such a cute baby lamb that it makes sense he'd end up being immune to her Grace-ness when he's just a cute little Einstein boiii. Like this is just so funny to me cus he's so oblivious to social conventions while she makes the milieu social her entire life so OFC it's gonna work. Like, this is such a worlds-colliding trope like just Give It To Me.

James and Grace - aw mannn Jamie just had me fricking wanting to hit a wall every two seconds cus like yooooooo every single time I think he and Cordelia are gonna stop being emotionally-constipated spouses, Jamie says some kinda shit like "omg me and Daisy are just friends uwu" like DO I NEED TO HIT YOU?????????? See I can't blame him for not slamming the door on Grace's face even tho he totes should- Jamie is so cerebral and kind that even if Grace wasn't using the enchantment on him, I think he would always be soft for her even if it isn't in a romantic way. There's just so much miscommunication cus like he said "Thank God" when she broke off the engagement with Charles and lowkey embraced her but it also wasn't his fault cus it wasn't even romantic BUT OFC IT LOOKED HORRIBLE TO CORDELIA like James literally never told the woman at least once that he loved her so OFC she thought she was back to square one with him dear God above what a mess. Not his fault, but she DID set down one rule for him: don’t cheat with Grace. And yeah even tho he hasn’t properly cheated, it must FEEL horrible to her cus she’s just been enduring the pain of their unrequeted love for so long :((

See imma just say it but if Cordelia thought that James didn't love Grace then she def would have confessed to him about her feelings right but like James, on the other hand, was delaying his own romantic confession cus he was BEING EMOTIONALLY CONSTIPATED and I can't even say the bracelet was solely to blame cus like my boi was just being so difficult omg I believe he should be lightly spanked by his three parents aka Will, Tessa and Jem *cries*.

Cordelia is such a MOM like she's so mature and stable and her self-preservation instinct? OFF THE CHARTS I love this woman like James definitely treated her well as a hubby but like I JUST WANTED HER TO HAVE CLOSURE ABOUT SOMETHING and boy oh boy she did get that closure she got it good but not from the person she expected in the LEAST *hehe* *pelican screeching*... like Lucie was being sus with the whole ghost business and James was being just, quite a case, dealing with Grace and Belial right and I don't blame them at all for their secrecy and shit but her FATHER DIED and her friends were hiding a lot from her so in a way she turned to Alistair for help but he could only do so much cus of his own pain (she couldn't even talk to her mom cus she's pregnant and she doesn't wanna stress her right) and then there was this emotional block between her and Jamie, Lucie was often absent and conspiring with the dead... the last person remaining was HIM (imma discuss this soon), but yeah my heart just went OUT to her cus she's tryna save herself and her family and she just doesn't know what to do. That's why I love the way her mom told her to stop holding herself back for others and live her own life. Like Cordelia grew on me so much cus in Gold she undoubtedly was a strange Elizabeth Bennet-wallflower hybrid and I... do not usually get attached to wallflowers but in Iron I feel like I finally understood that she was just tryna be unproblematic and self-preserving all along and nottt put her family and friends in a tough situation.... she reminds me of my mom personality-wise so yeah I’m totally rooting for her now that her *situation* in the past seems clearer.

Anna, Thomas and Matthew are such a SQUAD lmfaooooo like united in their gayness they'd be so unstoppable.

Will and Tessa are the most in-love of all the in-loves in this story and I respect that so much.

I lost a year to my life every time the romance between James and Cordelia got cockblocked. Like they were MARRIED and I thought they were gonna at least sleep next to each other at least once BUT NO James couldn't take a hint omg I'm actually gonna eat my fist and sob (but in retrospect, I think this serves a bigger purpose in terms of the narrative structure i.e. the interruption of all the spicy James and Cordelia action serves a bigger purpose which I think brings me to my next section, *exhale*)

LISTEN TO ME LISTEN WELL I LOVE THIS BOY SO MUCH IMMA SCREAM I REALLY AM GONNA SCREAM MY FIST IS LITERALLY IN MY MOUTH *BACKFLIPS OFF THE ROOF WITH LANA DEL REY PLAYING*

Okay like where to BEGIN I think the Shadowhunter boy who I'm most attracted to is Julian while the one I love the most is Will but I think I see myself in Matthew the most. Like ever since that first story where the Thieves all met at the Academy then got expelled, I think that I just KNEW Matthew was destined to be epic. Plus the whole Wilde obsession? I’m no libertine myself but I just love his chaos and passion for life.

NO CUS HE'S SO WITTY AND SWEET AND EPIC AND YET SO SECRETIVE AND DEAR GOD ABOVE AHHHHH WILL HE SURPASS JULIAN FOR ME??? Ion even know but this is just sodjsgdwsdygyegydgef

Hear me out but I said after finishing Gold last March that I wanted this book to be Matthew's healing arc right so halfway into the book when I realized that we weren't getting all that good healing arcing I was confused just cus I thought it seemed natural to address all of his alcohol issues and sadness by now. LITTLE DID I KNOW CASSIE WAS SETTING UP A WHOLE OTHER ARC WITH HIM THAT I WOULD HAVE NEVER GUESSED WTH.

At first I thought Matthew didn't have feelings for anyone at all, and if he DID develop feelings unexpectedly, I fricking thought that maybe he's catching feelings for James, if anyone??? I mean, I did have some suspicions about Matthew from the get-go: like he's so secretive and as readers we think we know everything there is to know about him since we were all privy to the truth potion incident in his short story right BUT NO I GOT PLAYED AND I DESERVE IT SO BADDDDDD.

Listen I hadn't shipped him and Cordelia simply because I never thought it in the realm of possibility but it MAKES SENSE as a ship... think about it: he never says what he feels, he flirts with her like he does with EVERYONE, he is kind to her in the way he is with EVERYONE. Really, Matthew is shippable with everyone, doesn’t matter if they’re taken cus that’s just what his Matthewnes allows for ya feel. There is such a beautiful irony that CORDELIA herself did not see this coming. Even the little teasers and hints in Gold have only NOW started making sense to me likejhss. I just felt like the hints in book 1 did not indicate to me that Matthew really harbored real romantic feelings for Daisy. I thought he was upset that James and Cordelia were being fakes, not a developing CRUSH on the woman fgs.

Not to mention that you usually sense a ship building when the emotional connection or sexual tension between the characters is made clearer but to me their FRIENDSHIP grew right but it didn’t feel like Cordelia was thought that she liked him or he liked her so that means me and Cordelia are clowns *together* 😤

Okay I was lowkey having SUSPICIONS but I immediately shut them down right... like firstly when he took her to the White Horse in his car and she went OFF and OFF and off about how she felt free for the first time? I thought Cassie was just tryna develop Cordelia's self-liberation arc through Matthew there. Heck, I didn't even think ANYTHING of it when Matthew confession to Cordelia about the "truth potion" incident at all cus I was like they're FRIENDS??? BUT now it's adding up now...

See when they were at the inn place and he was telling her that she doesn't in the least seem like a 100 year-old married woman? I was like hmmmm he's so sweet but why did Cassie phrase it like that like??? When Cordelia later reiterated that she thought Matthew's flirting was “meaningless”?? I was like hmmm kinda SUS tho. And then when he and James had their fight over the way Jamie kissed Grace like again I thought he was just like? ion know? mad at James for it but I didn't think he was in LOVE with Cordelia??? So I immediately put aside my slight suspicions. The probability that he had a crush on James at that point seemed more likely to me.

BUT THEN it started hitting me that every time Matthew drank, even before he explained his issue with the truth potion, that Cordelia would note it, she would worry about him, she would think of her father which seemed so poetic to me, history repeating itself and all that but this time you can FIX it??? Yeah, but again I didn't think the L WORD would be involved man???

Now imma sound like a delulu shipper here but it just makes sense they would develop feelings logically- reason being that it definitely is possible based on the way Cassie set up the story, like there's a combination of little “friend things” that can turn this into a proper ship: Matthew rescues Cordelia in the ballroom when Grace captures James' attention in Gold. Cordelia sees her father in Matthew all the time but knows now she has a chance to be there for him in the way she couldn't have been there for Elias (classic “history repeats itself” trope, she doesn't want Matthew drinking in Paris like dhshghdfhdhch). Cordelia tastes freedom for the first time when driving with Matthew. Matthew caught James and Cordelia making out in the room and was pissed but not even HE properly knew why then??? Umm, when she thinks James is forreal cheating with Grace on her she subconsciously goes to Matthew??? I also found it funny just how every intimate marital moment between her and James got interrupted somehow. Like, it's as if the narrative is just a living force REFUSING to let James and Cordelia as a ship be consecrated. Heck, every time Matthew is scantily clothed Cordelia notes it. LITTLE CRUMBS I TELL YOU LITTLE CRUMBS.

I tell you when Cordelia showed up to Matthew's flat I thought they were gonna f*ck as friends but I got SOMETHING EVEN BETTER SOMEHOW

THEY ARE GOING TO PARIS LA BELLE EPOQUE PARIS THE PARIS OF DREAMS AND ART LIKE??? FRICKKKKK I DID NOT SEE THIS COMING AT ALLLL MAN? I deadass thought the story would be restrained to the UK but like it MAKES SENSE the trope subversion MAKES SENSE.

BUT CORDELIA LOVES JAMES TOO LIKE I CAN'T DENY THAT... where are we GOING with this like Matthew wouldn't lie about his feelings and yet Cassie wouldn't give us Matthew and Cordelia crumbs to only end it in the next book immediately for her to just ditch him for James. I mean she was clearly holding back on fleshing out James and Cordelia as a ship for this but to WHAT END??? Daisy feels wild and free with Matthew and she feels warm at home warm with James. I can’t advocate for the sinking of ANY ship here.

Imma say what we're all thinking: Is she gonna give us a Will x Jem x Tessa type situation where Cordelia gets both of them cus I'm not strong enough for this but I also think it'd be really funny if James gets a surprise bi awakening in the next books and then we get POLY even tho this would never happen, it’s actually impossible, because of the whole parabatai thing.

Listen I ship Cordelia and Matthew much more than Cordelia and James, not that I dislike James in any way tho. It's just: Matthew is so unrestrained and she's so composed. They seem like an unlikely pair so it makes sense that they hit harder for me. James and Cordelia have such similar personalities but I ALSO don't ship James with Grace at all so like?? Poly would be... ideal... but it can’t happen especially cus they are fricking parabatai... a Will-Jem-Tessa situation seems more likely but mannnn ion know what to expect. I just want FAIRSTAIRS to have their moment in Paris. I mean James and Matthew clearly don't abhor each other for this.

Take everything I say with several grains of salt, take everything I say with the whole Dead Sea actually, cus I damn well know that Matthew is so flirty and whatnot that I’d have shipped him with anyone in their little circle but now that she set him up with Cordelia it all feels so right?? I have wanted this man in a good relationship since he walked onto the page in Nothing But Shadows so-

BRUH okay criticisms of CC?:

Lmfao a part of me feels like I GOTTA say something bad about CC or the book but honestly I have no objective complaints about it as of now. Am I saying that it’s the PEAK of Young Adult literature and Urban Fantasy? I mean, I make no such claims tbh. I’m not here to be critical when I read as a hobby and when CC’s writing makes me happy regardless of how flawed some people see it.

Okay what next?

So like I’m excited for the adult high fantasy she’s releasing in the fall and whatever other works she might be releasing outside of Chain of Gold within the Chronicles.

As for TLH itself? Man I’m just VIBING like I suspect I will reread Chain of Iron soon and maybe one of the anthologies just because I am happy that this series actually happened after me waiting like 6 years for it when it was just a concept: a Dickensian retelling filled with poetry and culture and history and the conventions I so loved in TID at age 12. This is all I been wanting tbh. I’m just enjoying watching this series come to fruition for it to inspire and transform me in some way. I feel like in a way my coming-of-age aligns with that of these specific characters yet I ALSO feel like I raised Jamie since infancy. Wack.

MATTHEW AND CORDELIA IN FRANCE LA BELLE EPOQUE TO BE EXACT IMMA CRY I DID NOT SEE THIS COMING AND AHHHHHH. ALSO WILL AND JAMIE GOING TO CORNWALL TO GET LUCIE AND MAYBE BOND I LOVE WILL. HE WAS ONE OF MY DILF AWAKENINGS AT AGE 12 AND NOW HE’S HERE AGAIN IMMA CRY. I WANNA SEE MATTHEW GET HAPPY. AHHH.

The episode is over? Soooo they must be continuing directly from this episode in the next one… right? I mean, they kinda have to right? Seeing as the watcher is involved directly now?

Also, at the beginning, the watcher said this one makes him sad… so has he seen this universe before but only on this watching ultron has broken out? Or was that the watcher from the future looking back on it?

I wonder if this show will have any impact on the upcoming films, or if they’ll be an isolated experience within the show?

Soooo I’m assuming sometime during the watchers planning with dr strange, ultron goes to party thor world? Cmon man leave my Jotun loki alone.

Bolin x reader(korra’s sister)

2k words and it’s kinda poorly edited

a/n there’s some cuss words and some violence?

“We were just looking for the bathroom and we got lost!”

“Ah the old I had to pee excuse you know i'm sick and tired…” I don’t catch the rest of what he's saying because I see a teenage boy dressed in pro bending gear or as I like to call him our way out of this situation. I motion for him to come over praying to the spirits that he can read the room.

“There you two are, I've been looking everywhere for you two! It's alright Toza there with me” Up close I can see that it's actually Bolin the earth bender for the fire ferrets. Spirits can my day get any better. I've seen a few pro bending matches before and listened to even more. One of the few perks of being the avatar’s sister. While she spends her days training on air temple island I spend my days wandering the city my favorite pastime being watching pro bending matches.Spirits he looks even better up close

“Yeah were with him” I say flashing the man a million watt smile and he responds with

“so you see we’re together” Oh I like where this is going. Before I can respond Korra replies

“well not together together” speak for yourself Korra. I'm more than happy to be together together with him. He starts to stammer embarrassed by Korra words so I try to save all of us

“You see Toza Bolin and I are together and my sister was just tagging along with us.” Please let this work, if not Tenzin is going to kill me for letting korra go out with me.

“Ah I don't care I got work to do” the man begins to walk away and I pull the stammering duo out of the room before either of them could blow our cover. I turn around to see a blushing Bolin and a confused looking Korra, I really need to teach her how to pick up on social cues

“I’m y/n, a big fan of yours, so Bolin why don't you show the two of us around” I say while grabbing his bicep motioning for him to lead. Bolin showed us around for a while before leading us into an area overlooking the arena “So what do you think best seats in the house huh?” It really is you can see the whole arena from up here and it's much less crowded than the seats in the stadium plus there isn't a guy as easy on the eyes as Bolin down there.

“Oh absolutely the view just keeps getting better and better” it's not often that I get to meet people as just y/n, not the avatar's sister, or korra's younger sister. It's nice to be myself around someone knowing that they're not using me to get to the avatar. Besides from what I've seen Bolin is too sweet and innocent to do that anyways.

“Unbelievable this place is even more amazing than I imagined” I let out a small chuckle at Korra's words. It's nice to see her getting excited at the smallest things, it shows me that she can still be a kid and not burdened by the weight of the world. It makes sneaking out and a possible chewing out from Tenzin worth it “Names Bolin by the way”

“Korra” “I know” they both look at me waiting for an explanation “well i'm just a huge fan of yours” I pause “well the fire ferrets in general”

“Psst Bolin”

“Yeah”

“I told you you have to stop bringing your crazy fangirls in here before the matches get them out of here” His older brother Mako whispers this to him Korra and I both hear due to the fact that they suck at whispering. It almost hurts my feelings that we aren't the only ones he brought back here but then again he's not the first guy i've flirted with here. Though he is the first guy i've flirted with that seems so...innocent.

“Aw c'mon Mako I kinda promised them that they could stay but I got a good feeling about them there's something special about the two of them. I know it” Well he's half right there. I wonder why he lied to his brother so we could stay. He never promised us we could stay back here. Some part of me hopes it's because he's interested in me too. “Come here I want you to meet my brother Mako” he says eagerly pulling me towards him

“Mako! Wow I heard you play on the radio” oh boy she's totally fangirling. I personally don’t see what's so interesting about Mako or his brooding douchebag act “cmon Bolin we’re up” Mako says completely ignoring Korra walking past her, see brooding douchebag. Korra not taking the hint turns to Bolin “or I could meet him later”

“yeah he gets real focused before a match anyways wish me luck” his comment makes me laugh. Something about the positive energy he radiates is infectious. He jogs away, I yell “good luck Bolin” followed by “good luck knock em out” from Korra

“So do i have to be the one to say mako is bad news or i have to let you figure it out yourself” I cross my arms giving her my best ‘i know better than you’ look. While Korra may be the older sister, only by 11 months might I add, she doesn't act it. I blame all of her teachers and instructors for never letting her live when she was younger. Now that she's basically an adult seeing the world for the first time she's very sheltered.

“He is not bad news y/n you heard bolin he was just focused for the match! Besides, did you see him?” let her figure it out for herself it is.

“Yes and i also saw you drooling at him” I tease

“Oh please like you were any better with Bolin you were practically throwing yourself at him” these are the best moments when we can just goof off.

“First off I do not throw myself at anyone, he's just sweet and insanely hot. Secondly which one of us actually has experience with boys” she opens her mouth to defend herself before quickly shutting it. Got her there. “Exactly now pay attention the match is starting” We both turn and lean on the balcony watching the start of the match.

“The rookie ferrets came out of nowhere and made it further than anyone expected this season but tonight they face their toughest test yet folks” we watch the two teams trading back and forth blows until the fire ferrets ultimately win with Mako knocking all 3 members of the opposing team into the water. I turn to Korra to ask how her first ever pro bending match was but stopping when I see her and Mako holding each other's gazes.

“Yes! Whoo did you see that one more win and were in the championship tournament!” Bolin yells running into the room skidding to a halt in front of me “so what'd you think y/n?” he looks down at me trying to conceal his excitement waiting for me to answer him looking happier than i've ever seen him-if that's possible.

“You guys were amazing Bolin!” I practically yell pulling him into a quick hug.

“Bolins got some moves huh?”

“You could say that again” Before Bolin can say that again Korra grabs him by his shirt pulling him towards her

“That was amazing” then korra promlety pushed him away as Mako and Hasook approach arguing about the last match

“You did more harm than good out there, you almost cost us the match!”

“We won didn't we?”

“Barely”

“Get off my case pal” Hasook yells before storming out of the room.This doesn't put a damper on korra's mood though as she addresses Mako “You guys were amazing out there especially you mr hat trick” Mako yet again walks right past her him barely paying her any attention to her half heartly saying “oh your still here”

“What gives you the right to be such an ass mr hat trick?” I say coming to my sister's defence. Pro bender or not it doesn't give him the right to be a jerk. I even bet I could beat him sparring. He's not even good enough to be this much of a jerk.

“Your good do you think you could show me some tricks?” no no no korra that wasn't the deal I sneak you out we watch one pro bending match and we go back to air temple island.

“Yeah sure absolutely i'm just not sure how my earth bending might translate to your water bending but we'll figure it out” This cant get any worse if she lets them know she's the avatar we're toast. No ones supposed to know the avatars in republic city

“Won't be a problem-”

“korra's right it won't be a problem because we really have to go-”

“because i'm an earth bender” great this is j ust great.

“Im sorry no no i didn't mean to assume ya know cause i was just figuring since well with your water tribe getup that you two were well water bender”

“Korras just messing with you of course were both water-”

“You're right, I'm a water bender too and fire bender” social. Cues. Korra.

“Hmm hmm i'm very confused right now” Bolin

“Your the avatar and i'm an idiot” Mako

“Both are true” Korra. I throw myself into the nearest chair running my hands through my y/h/c hair.I wonder if I beg for forgiveness if Tenzin will still ground us for the rest of forever

“I need a drink” I say, completely ignoring Bolin’s freak out about Korra being the avatar I've heard it all before. Just like that my chances with Bolin have gone out the window no one has ever liked me more than my sister she's the avatar I can't compete with that .I never will be able to.

Nonetheless I follow the brothers into the training room and sit on the stairs looking as happy to be there as Mako does. I don't pay much attention to Bolin and Korra training “so mr hat trick is there any reason why you're so prickly or are you always like this?”

He scoffs “no i just don’t appreciate the two of you showing up like that besides your sister is a piece of work” “No kidding hat trick don't you know being the avatar comes with a hero complex?” Okay so he's not as bad as I thought.

“Well it's getting late so i'm going to turn in but you kids have fun”

“Speaking of Korra we really do need to be going” I speak in a tone to let her know it wasn't an option.I stand up brushing my water tribe robes off “it really was great seeing you Bolin but we have to go”

“Sorry my sister is being such a wet blanke-” “now Korra”

“Hey um y/n could you hang back for a second” here it goes. Is your sister single? Can you set me up?

“What do you need Bolin?”

“You mean other than you in my life” we both cringe after he says that.

“That has to be the worst pick up line i've ever heard”

He scratches the back of his neck awkwardly “heh yeah it wasn't really my A material but the real reason i wanted to talk to you was well i was mostly just wondering well we have a match next”

“Bolin spit it out i'm sure it isn't that bad”

“Do you want to come to our match tomorrow then get some food after” he looks at the ground playing with his fingers. Where was the confident Bolin I met earlier?

“Yes”

“Well it was a stupid idea anyways I shoul- wait yes? Really! I uh I mean of course you would want to get food with me” maybe he's more insecure than I initially thought. But then again people do have layers.

I kiss him on the cheek turning away from him and walking to the door so he couldn't see the blush on my face “I'll see you tomorrow Bolin”

no one asked for this but my thoughts on betty and folklore is just any song can be gay if you want it to be. a fun fact about me is that I’ve actually been interpreting Taylor Swift songs as gay well before folklore. so let me share with you some more Taylor songs that are gay in my eyes. obviously, I'm aware most of these songs were probably not written with the intention to be gay and I’m neither labelling Taylor’s sexuality or suggesting she should come out. But that doesn’t mean I can’t make these songs gay now, so I can relate to them.

okay so this song was obviously written about a straight couple not being able to be together because of their parents like Romeo and Juliet. But if you ignore/change the pronouns to fit the story, it is about a girl (Juliet) who wants to be with her girlfriend (Romeo), but her dad is homophobic and doesn’t let Romeo near her. She wants her girl to come and save her from her homophobic family/ town. and this lyric just fits too well “Romeo save me, they’re trying to tell me how to feel, this love is difficult but it’s real, don’t be afraid we’ll make it out of this mess, it’s a love story baby just say yes”

this could be about two girls who started off as friends until one night they realise they have feelings for each other and after that night everything changes

it’s about a girl in a wIw relationship and they are battling with coming out and facing homophobia which puts a strain on their relationship. The woods symbolise homophobia or fearing coming out bc of homophobia they might face. And then in the bridge the lyrics are “remember when you couldn’t take the heat, I walked out, I said I’m setting you free, but the monsters turned out to be just trees, when the sun came up you were looking at me.” This means she freaked out and almost left the relationship because of the pressure in coming out but in the end coming out wasn’t as scary as they imagined it to be or they were strong enough to handle the woods anyway. Also in the first verse when she says “you took a polaroid of us and then discovered the rest of the world was in black and white but we were in screaming colour” black and white is straight and screaming colour is gay

so this song is about Taylor’s feelings moving to New York, a city that embraces freedom, and well the second verse literally sums it up “everybody here wanted something more and you can want who you want, boys and boys and girls and girls”

whenever I listen to new romantics its vibes remind me of a gay bar- the chorus especially just sounds like its about the lgbtqia+ community to me “cause baby I could build a castle out of all the bricks they threw at me, and every day is like a battle but every night with us is like a dream, baby we’re the new romantics, cmon come along with me, heartbreak is the national anthem, we sing it proudly, we’re too busy dancing to get knocked off our feet, baby we’re the new romantics, the best people in life are free”

there’s nothing really specific about this song to make it gay, I just love paper rings so much and it makes me wish I had a girlfriend who I could make it about

trying to prove to someone a song isn’t gay is so shitty. us wanting songs to be gay is no different to straights relating love songs and break up songs to their own personal relationships.

Kirishima x reader - just a dream

(A/n): Now this wasn’t a request, but it was something I wrote about a year ago that I found in my notes. It was for one of my closest friends, so I turned it into an x reader. If they happen to stumble upon this, and wish for me to take it down, then I will have no problem doing so. (And if you do find it and want me to take it down dude I’m reallyyyyy sorryyyyyy)

“Hey-Kirishima..?”

The red haired boy looked up from his drink. People bustled in and out of the coffee shop he and (Y/n) were currently sitting in. (Y/n) took a small sip from their beverage.

“Hm?” Kirishima hummed. (Y/n) looked nervous. People roared with laughter and conversation around them, contrasting the sudden silence they come across.

“I...I need to get something off my chest, red”

(Y/n) averted his gaze. They brought their cup back to their lips absentmindedly, taking a longer sip this time. Kirishima followed suit.

“So...uh...how do I say this...” (y/n) mumbled, words overlapping each other. Kirishima looked at (y/n) intently. “I’ve had certain...feeling about you and I-it’s not in a friend way...”

(Y/n) never met Kirishimas gaze. They instead silently sipped at their cup, thinking of their next words.

“So...I just want to say that I...I love you..”

Kirishimas eyes soften as he finally looked away. Right as (y/n) looked at him too. Noticing he now stared off into his drink, they quickly looked back down.

“I...” Kirishima started. (Y/n) looked up at their best friend.

“I’m sorry. I...like someone else...”

Those few words stung like daggers through (y/n’s) chest, each one burning more after the other. Kirishima held a look of pity as (y/n) just sat there, engulfing them both in silence. It was like the whole cafe went quiet.

(Y/n) was the first to break the silence.

“Who-who is it..?” (y/n) piped up, trying to sound happy but failing miserably. Kirishima exhaled with a smile.

“Well theres this person-and I don’t really know why I like them. Actually-there’s no possible reason why I WOULDN’T like them! They’re super funny, and they fight SUPER manly! Not to mention they’re always saving my ass-and whenever they walk into the room? Oh my gosh it’s like it gets all bright and stuff!! Sadly, they probably don’t feel the same-but that’s okay. They’re still my closest Brofriend...” Kirishima rambled on dreamily, resting his head on his palm. Each word dug into (Y/n’s) heart like arrows to a target.

“Cmon man just-just spit it out already..!” (Y/n’s) joked around, playfully punching Kirishima on the shoulder lightly with a trembling hand. The red head chuckled lightly.

“It’s...it’s Mina..”

(Y/n’s) smile faltered. “I-I’m sorry...who?”

“It’s...time to wake up.”

(Y/n’s) eyes snapped open. They bolted upright and looked around their room. (Y/n) sighed and rubbed at their temples. “God...” (y/n) groaned. (Y/n) glanced at their alarm clock.

6:30 am.

(Y/n) sighed once more and groggily got up from their bed and stretching.

(Y/n) couldn’t get the dream out of their head. It played over and over again like a broken record. Of course, they had to have that dream on the day they planned on confessing too.

At the same coffee shop as well.

“You okay (n/n)??” Kirishima said, waving his hand across (y/n’s) face multiple times. they were in hero’s class with all might, and they were working on they’re ultimate moves and such.

(Y/n) shrugged. “It’s all good, I’m just really out of it today.” Kirishima smiled.

“B-by the way, you wanna hangout today at the coffee shop after school? I uh, I need to tell you something.” (Y/n) said, immediately recalling the events in their dream. They gulped.

“Sure bro!-“ Kirishima started. They were immediately wrapped up in Aizawas capture weapon, tightening up more and more by the second.

“Stop talking and get back to work. If you want to talk, then do that outside of class..” Aizawa grumbled tiredly.

“G-gotcha sensei!” (Y/n) and Kirishima rasped out in unison. The capture weapon loosened and the pair exhaled sharply.

“A-anYWAYS, haAh goD, i-I’m down...” Kirishima huffed, still surprised from aizawas sudden attack. (Y/n) exhaled and placed a hand on their chest. “Well, see you there red!”

They both went back to work.

The day was over, and (y/n) was waiting anxiously infront of the school for Kirishima to arrive. “Heyyy! (Y/nnnnnnn)!” Kirishima called. (Y/n’s) heart skipped a beat as their fingers shook from nervousness. “R-ready to go out?” (Y/n) said, voice cracking a little.

“Heck yeah!”

The two arrived at the small cafe, and took a seat. “Whaddya want man? I’ll order for you.” Kirishima mused.

“Uh-ill just get a small coffee...” (y/n) said. Kirishima smiled once more before disappearing into the line. (Y/n) let out a breath they didn’t know they were holding.

Is this even a good idea anymore? (Y/n’s) head swarmed with negative thoughts and doubts. I mean, if that dream was a warning, maybe I should just say nothing and enjoy the day with my best friend-

“I’m back (y/n)!” Kirishima hollered as quietly as possible. He held up two cups. “And I got our drinks!”

“Niiiiice” (y/n) mused, a drop of sweat crawling down their face. Kirishima took a seat in front of them and slid their drink to them.They took hold of it, and brought it to their lips tentatively.

“So...” Kirishima said , resting his hand on the back of his seat. “Didn’t ya wanna tell me something?”

(Y/n’s) blood ran cold. They closed their eyes and took another sip. “Y-yeah, actually..” Kirishima tilted his head to the side.

“What’s the matter bro? You seemed out of it the whole day-is everything alright??”

‘Well, there’s no backing down now...’ they thought. (Y/n) cleared their throat and placed both hands on the rim of the coffee table.

“Uh-well, yeah I do need to ask you something.” (Y/n) said. Kirishima looked worried now. “B-but it’s not anything serious!” (Y/n) frantically rushed out.

“what is it man? You know you can talk to me, we’re best bro’s!” Kirishima smiled, pounding a fist lightly against his chest. (Y/n’s) heart swelled.

(Y/n) shook that feeling off. “It’s nothing really but...uh...do you, per se, like anyone? Like, like like someone?”

Kirishima looked up from his drink. It was loud, just like in kairus dream. That wasn’t good reassurance.

Kirishima smirked sheepishly and took a long drink from his cup, before sighing contently and setting it down with a thud.

“Yes, actually...”

(Y/n) felt a pang in their chest. They already assumed he had someone who caught his eye the same way he caught theirs but...just hearing it out loud is so...

(Y/n) pressed their lips into a thin line. “W-what are they like?” (Y/n) said, forcing a smile. Kirishima blushed. (Y/n’s) face darkened.

“Well, they’re super funny, and they fight SUPER manly! Not to mention they’re always saving my ass-and whenever they walk into the room it’s like it gets all bright and stuff-”

(Y/n’s) eyes blurred up. It was exactly like their dream. Maybe it was a warning. Maybe it was the world telling them he wasn’t meant for them. Maybe it was just god telling them Kirishima is just a friend to them, nothing more, nothing less.

They let Kirishima continue, though they already knew what he was going to say.

He was going to say he liked Mina, and (y/n’s) pathetic heart would break all over again.

“-Sadly, they probably don’t feel the same-but that’s okay. They’re still my closest brofriend.”

Tears unwillingly welled up in (y/n’s) eyes. They blinked them away and looked back up to a cheerful looking Kirishima, whose face went from happy to worry.

“(Y/n)-for like the millionth time today-is everything al-“

(Y/n) stood up from their seat. Rather abruptly, that is. Their chair knocked back, causing a weird screeching noise. Many people turned their heads in their direction and most of their conversations halted.

A flurry of emotion blew past (y/n) as tears finally spilled down their cheeks. Kirishima looked intensely concerned.

“I-I can’t-“ (y/n) squeaked out as they made a beeline for the exit. They just barley stepped out of the cafe as they felt a warm hand grip their wrist. They was immediately met face to face with a distressed, but pitiful looking Kirishima.

“(Y/n) I...do you know who I’m describing..?” Kirishima said, looking away. (Y/n) pursed their lips. “Of course I do, it’s Mina-“

“No, it isn’t.”

(Y/n) looked puzzled. Kirishima still looked off to the side. (Y/n) furrowed their eyebrows.

“Who...who is it?”

(Y/n) braced themself for the answer. If it wasn’t Mina, it was probably someone else like asui, or yaoyorozu, or hell even Bakugou-

“It’s you”

(Y/n) stared intensely at their best friend. Kirishima finally met (y/n’s) gaze. (Y/n) was at a loss for words. Words couldn’t even explain how was they were feeling right now.

They pulled Kirishima into a hug, as that was all they were able to do at the moment. Kirishima took their lack of response as an okay sign to hug back.

People were probably staring at them, but they couldn’t care less.

It was only Kirishima and (y/n) at that moment.

“So...what did ya wanna say to me, (n/n)?”

(Y/n) looked at him. They smiled genuinely for the first time since they arrived.

“I love you, red.”

Kirishima smiled aswell, and pecked the top of (y/n) forehead softly.

“I love you too, (n/n).”

Episode 30, the alleged halfway mark, at last!

I’m fresh out of jokes so let’s hop right into the review!

So last week I listed the things episode 30 needed to do to make me not hate it. They were: 1) Sora had to stay with Taichi and be part of the action, 2) the other characters had to feature here and there to progress their storylines even if the main focus remained on Taichi, and 3) WarGreymon’s appearance needed to be dramatic.

Well... guess who didn’t get Bingo this episode -_____-’

I am... seriously... mind-boggled. This is bizarre. Yes, we all understand that evolutions just aren’t the big deal they were in 99 Adventure, BUT this episode DOES try to convince us that WarGreymon IS a big deal. It just fails at it spectacularly, in my opinion at least. As for the rest: Sora stays with Taichi, but he tells her to take the helpless Digimon to safety and then we don’t see her do anything but stand around waiting for Taichi. Most of the other characters don’t even get a cameo, let alone story progression. Taichi reflects on them briefly at one point but it’s unbelievably stupid. Only Koushirou has anything to do and he is STILL JUST STARING AT HIS COMPUTER.

My expectations for episode 30 weren’t super high, given the current storyline, but I’m honestly slackjawed by how BORING this episode was. They really seem to have decided to rest the entirety of the show on Taichi, and much though I love him, I just don’t think he CAN carry it by himself. Not only has he long been unbelievable as a grade school kid even for shonen anime standards, he doesn’t crack jokes, he doesn’t show personality... all he does is fight. Like, the show isn’t ALWAYS like this - I’ve legit enjoyed it a various times, and I know why - it was always when the team was together and we learned things about them and the fighting was balanced out. So I never know from one week to the next how I’m gonna feel about the new episode. But I do think this is the episode I hate the most to date. :/

We had a promising start with Garudamon still actively fighting several Megadramon at once, simultaneously barbecuing Sora.

Fortunately it’s magic so she’s not dead, nor has she fallen to death.

Taichi and MetalGreymon continue fighting the Allomon on the ground.

Koushirou keeps an eye on the misbehaving satellites.

Taichi and Sora debate what to do. It’s difficult to protect the forest Digimon while fighting at the same time, so Taichi tells Sora to bring them to safety while he fends off their enemies on his own. WHAT THE HELL IS THIS PLAN. Since it’s a shonen anime, I normally wouldn’t whine about this but... it was just last episode that we were shown Taich cannot cope with the combined attack of that many enemies at once on his own. He needed Sora’s help. Why he now thinks he can do it is a mystery.

Taichi can maybe handle the Allomon and Megadramon on his own, but last episode Tankmon also appeared, and this time, lo and behold, in comes Parrotmon. Sorry Taichi but you brought this on yourself.

Meanwhile Koushirou communicates with “someone from the Internet” and learns that the satellites are all rerouting to converge on the same location:

The freaking International Space Station!

Which will then surely explode! And cause lots of trouble both in space and on earth!

MetalGreymon proved to be weak to the lightning Parrotmon emits. If there’s a reason, they don’t explain, but I like the idea that he’s particularly weak to it because he’s a cyborg and the electricity disrupts his... circuits :P Then Parrotmon gets hit with a beam of dark energy and evolves!

Into Klosmon? Krosmon? IDK, IDC.

They get their butts handed to them. Taichi and Agumon fall unconscious. Rather than take the chance to deliver the finishing blow, Klosmon or whatever politely waits for them to wake up.

Taichi’s consciousness is swept into a white empty world...

where he finds the Crest of Courage looking weirdly sentient... or maybe that’s just me...

MetalGreymon just looks possessed

Taichi: Are you alive?

Agumon: Yeah... you okay?

Taichi: Yeah... uhh... well... sort of...

Not being dead = I’m still ok

So here’s where the episode really loses me... After visiting the blank world, Taichi is suddenly able to recall what happened after Devimon ate him.

This makes little sense since he seemed pretty KO’d at the time, but okay, find, he woke up long enough to see WarGreymon and now he’s remembering it, sure why not. But I hate that they did this whole “ohh he doesn’t remember!” thing and then solved it like this. Presto! Now he remembers! It’s maaaagic!

And as ADORABLE as the two of them holding hands like this and resolving to keep fighting is... I just can’t be impressed by a battle with Parrotmon. Or Klosmon or whatever it is now. There’s a reason most shows save dramatic moments and big epiphanies for battles that actually progress the storyline. It makes a much bigger impact. This just feels like someone saying “Woohoo it’s Tuesday!” and then you ask “what’s special about it, is it your birthday or something?” and they say “Nope I just felt like being excited that it’s Tuesday!”

I mean points for optimism and all but it doesn’t make a very good story.

And I get that the “never give up!” attitude is essential to the shonen anime protagonist, but when you literally can’t walk by yourself anymore, it’s important to take care of your health is ALSO an important message this show might consider teaching kids once in a while -.-”

In spite of his unsteady legs, Agumon’s still able to evolve again and powers up to fight Klosmon.

It uh... doesn’t go well.

The one cool thing here is the way Taichi sets about attempting to make MetalGreymon evolve. Although we already knew the children play an important role in evolving their partners, Taichi seems to really understand it now, and focuses deeply. It’s a much more active role than we’ve seen before - it seems like more than the usual “encouraging thoughts and emotional ties” spurring the evolution.

At least he’s still super cute.

So we have already seen the Crests many times, I knew that... but my theory was that, in order to reach the final evolutionary stage, they would need the help of the physical Crests. So that’s what I thought Mimi was doing with those crystals.

But Taichi is indeed about to call WarGreymon. So... I have no idea what use Mimi’s gonna find for those crystals x’D I suppose she’ll make herself and Palmon matching necklaces. Or sell them on the black market.

From her super safe hiding spot, Sora watches in awe, wishing she too were a real character on this show and not just an inconvenience as far as most of the writing staff are concerned

I love WarGreymon’s shield.

BAM. He appears. It’s dramatic. But only just.

WarGreymon defeats Klosmon and explodes the forest... Uhhh, weren’t we supposed to be protecting it?

Taichi and WarGreymon then join Sora and the forest Digimon and uh... that’s the episode.

Oh yeah, we get one more hint that Lopmon is more than just some random idiot. Lol. This episode hinted at Lopmon, reminded us that Hikari’s been abducted, and told us that the International Space Station might explode, and then addressed none of those.

The message on the bottom says that the next episode will be on January 10, meaning there will be no episode next week as per usual due to New Year’s holidays.

Next week’s episode:

Turns out Lopmon is one of the holy Digimon or something. Honestly not a surprise, I mean, it’s Lopmon. Should have occurred to me earlier.

Also we got what I think is our first named mention of Millenniumon and it looks like Hikari might find out somethig about him. So that’s cool. The rest of the episode seems to stick with Taichi and Sora’s group... The only thing I can say hopefully is that, since WarGreymon’s appeared, MetalGarurumon ought to be not too far off. So that should mean we at least get a Yamato-centric episode in the not too distant future.

Okay, a couple weeks ago I said I had some stuff to say but would wait till episode 30 to do it... so stop here if you don’t want to read me ranting :P It mostly amounts to what I complained about in the beginning: This season is just so hyper-focused on the fights and seems to treat the team aspect as an afterthought. Which makes no sense to me. Honestly, I don’t mind the excessive fighting - that’s common in shonen anime and grown up me can’t expect to be interested in the same stuff that interests 8 year old boys.

I don’t even mind the idea of Taichi’s role as main character getting an upgrade - like, in 99, he was the main character, but it was felt a lot less. Better balanced with the others’ roles, I mean. I think it’s totally okay to make Taichi a more central character and the plot focus in the new season - it wouldn’t be my choice, of course, but that doesn’t mean it’s inherently bad. But the way they’re going about it just doesn’t make sense to me. Even Taichi isn’t interesting half the time. He just fights.

Like I said before, this isn’t the way the show always is. There have been some highlights. I truly loved a few episodes, and the show does seem to have fallen into a pattern of being good for a while and then degrading into something like today’s episode. I don’t know why: budget? pandemic? or is this really, legitimately, what the show producers want to show kids? I guess, in the end, this show really may be about selling toys and selling toys only. (But, if that’s the case, I’m even more surprised that they don’t make a bigger deal about all the evolutions...)

A lot of things I liked the most happened in the very beginning - the first three episodes in particular. The characters interacted with each other. Their feelings and actions influenced each other. Fighting happened, a lot, but it wasn’t the only thing happening. I was pretty excited then. I didn’t expect to love this show like I love 99 - that’s just not possible, I’m too old and 99 is too special to me for me to trust my judgment - I was just happy to see the Adventure kids back and entertaining a new generation.

But since then it’s been a roller coaster with few highs and a lot of lows. Although it’s hard to imagine how the pandemic would have changed the storyline, episode 4 was where they paused the show for Japan’s lockdown-but-not-really, and once they picked back up the tone just seemed kind of different from the first three episodes. Not right away - I think the intro episodes for the rest of the team were pretty reminiscent of “Digimon Adventure” - but that makes sense, they had 4 ready to go and probably had made headway on the next few episodes before they closed down the studio. Anyway, that’s just a guess, since it seems like everything’s been affected by the pandemic, but with a few exceptions we have all been back to work more or less normally since June...

The thing is, there are lots of fighting shonen anime - tons of protagonists who never give up and never fall in spite of how hurt they get, and who get unlimited “evolutions” in return for their tenacity. That’s all fine. It’s the genre. But the thing is...! The thing is, those other shows, they all tend to have humor, to care at least marginally about character relationships, and understand that that’s how you build up a main character: just winning fights alone doesn’t cut it. So I just don’t know what to make of this new Adventure show. It’s FINE when the team is together. We get cool character moments and insights and even some joking around. But they KEEP SEPARATING THEM. This time they didn’t even have more than a single episode together before they were all split up again! I wonder if it’s because they’re having trouble getting all the voice actors in due to pandemic-related issues and budget issues etc. If so, HUGE bummer. Of all the years for Digimon Adventure to get a reboot... why did it have to be this miserable excuse for a year...

Le sigh.

But there’s nothing we can do about it. I’m just going to like what I like and hope for the best in the future. I really would love for the new Adventure to be popular with kids and keep that cast going. I don’t expect it to compete with the lids of Kinmetsu no Yaiba or anything. I just hope that, when we hit the final episode, we look back and say that the season was overall worth the reboot. I hate the thought of looking back and saying “well, that sure was dull.” It’s just an insult. 99 Adventure wasn’t the most unique storyline in the world, but it had a lot of uniqueness IN it, and what made it special was its treatment of the team and the child-partner relationships. The reboot doesn’t need to be exactly the same, but it shouldn’t be forgettable.

That’s why us being at the 30 episode mark concerns me. At this point we know how the show is paced and what’s it like. We can’t really argue that we just don’t know enough to make a judgmenet yet. It’s hard to believe things will suddenly change. If they do, assuming the change is for the better, I’ll be thrilled, but I’ll also feel sad that we missed out on so many chances for cool things to happen in the first half.

Lonnie (on her cellphone to Elsa): thank you your majesty. See you soon. (She hangs up). Ok. So we got Agrabah, Arendelle and New Orleans on our side.

Dizzy: what about Auroria and Cinderellasburg?

Jane: you know it just occurred to me how stupid some of these names sound

Lonnie (shrugging): we didn’t name em. Auroria. Possibly. Cinderellasburg. I dunno. Remember it’s her son who’s the homicidal maniac.

(In Ben’s office the three villains are looking at smoking hole in the carpet where the king once was)

Maleficent: is he dead

Chad: I dunno. Never done this before. Just thought of what would hurt him and did that. Dunno where that ball came from

Adam: what exactly would hurt him.

Chad: I think it was something to do with you sir

Adam: well he did destroy my portrait. And you had better hope he’s not dead. If he is then he’ll be used as a martyr and the bastards will be even harder to subjugate.

Adam: don’t know don’t care. She’s not important. And she’s thrown in her lot with the villain spawn. She’s not worth saving son

Chad: then I’ll make her. I have the wand. A little trance and then we dance.

(On the island Facillier Celia and the boys have just sat down for lunch)

Carlos: god I forgot how good your cooking was

Facillier: well I’m glad I can still do something for you children. Even if it isn’t much

Jay: to be honest I kinda missed this. Running away from Jafar. Coming here. Playing arcade games. Having proper good and not glass lined stew. Thank you

Facillier: your very welcome Jay. I have two extra slices for the girls when they come back from their fathers. Would they be interested

Carlos: mom won’t. Vegetarian. But dad probably wil. If not then 🎶more for me🎶.

Jay: I’m done. I’ll put them on the bikes. You go play some games.

Carlos: ahaha I don’t think so. Not after yesterday. I’m coming with you. Don’t even try to stop me

Jay: and miss out on quality time with you? What am I? And idiot? Don’t answer that, just assume the position

(Carlos happily jumps in Jay’s back and they leave the arcade. The silence doesn’t last long)

Jay (from outside): HOLY MOTHER OF FUCK!!!!

(Carlos scurries back in slightly out of breath)

Carlos: the Hook’s stole our bikes. Jay’s chasing them. How long do you think mom and Evie will be at their dads?

Facillier: I don’t know. Why do they want there bikes

Carlos: the blonde said something about revenge redemption and repentance

Facillier: shit

Carlos: what

Celia: Harry’s alive. And they know.

(Outside the sisters Hook are on the bikes and Jay is chasing them. The give him the slip and he takes a shortcut which ends with him crashing through the apartment of someone he knows)

Jay: good thing I can’t get hurt

Cassim: Jay?

Jay: Cassim? You moved?

Cassim: I’m squatting.

Jay: of course. When this is all over I’m coming back for you personally. I need my grandpa after all

Cassim: Aladdin adopted you?

Jay: yup.

Cassim: I’m glad. Now what the hell are you doing

Jay: the Hook bitches stole two of our bikes. Trying to get them back.

Cassim: then go son, go

(Jay teleports away from the apartment straight into the girls path. They crash into him, flip over and land in a pile of crates against the wall)

Jay: you know. I have it on good authority that this is where your brother landed last year. After my friend stabbed him in the dick

Cj: don’t speak his NAME!

(She screams and aims a knife at his throat. He holds her wrist stopping her in the process. There’s a cracking sound)

Jay: do you really think you can hurt me. (Harriet tries to att ack him but he sweeps her legs from under her, she land on her back and he puts a foot on her throat) both of you are just as pathetic as your brother. Now. Tell me (his eyes glow bright gold) why did you steal the bikes?

Harriet (slowly suffocating): Harry. He’s, he’s

Jay: he’s what?

(In hades lair mother and son have just finished their talk)

Harry (still in disbelief): he though she was a mermaid. Oh god the injuicetus of it all

Hades: the what

Harry: it’s not fair. I can’t be related to those. Hold on. Do I have magic?

Hades: I don’t know. You might be a Vernon. James, while very bloodthirsty and oh so confident

Harry: yuck

Hades: is 100% fully human. So I don’t know if you have it in you.

Evie: and besides what do you care if you’re half mermaid? Your owner is an octopus. You haven’t got a leg to stand on

Harry: ohoho neither does the king kid sister

Evie: don’t call me that you have NO RIGHT

Harry: if I have magic. I’ll be more powerful then you

Evie: oh you think so do you? You’re only half god. The rest of you is stanky part human. I’m half sorceress. Mal’s half dark fairy. We’re better then you. In every way shape and form.

(This is when “anything you can do” happens. After the song)

Mal: are you two quote finished? Only cause I really want to get home before the kingdom falls and my fiancé dies

Evie (scoffing): of course. It’s always about what you want. You don’t even care that I’m in a crisis

Mal: I’m sorry what was that?

Evie: oh nothing. As always you’re too wrapped up in your own crap to see I’m suffering

Mal: oh my apologies dear sister. But who’s god awful advice last year led to the deaths of sixteen members of the paparazzi?

Evie: you’re the one that lost control. And then tried to kill me.

Mal: I was pissed that Ben got kidnapped. I also tasered Harry in the neck and nearly crushed Gil’s aorta in a fit of magic induced psychosis. You’re not special

(At this point the guys speak simultaneously)

Harry: you did what to Gil?

Hadie: you killed sixteen people?

Hades: that explains the magical history tour

Mal: Uma tore out my own heart and made me put it back, we used the book to resurrect them and yes the attempted sororicide is what led to it

Hades: wow. And. After all that. You still want to help.

Mal (shrugging): I live there. I have to help. Who else will?

Hades: the authorities. I don’t get it. After everything you’ve been through. Your mother. The coronation. The whatever it was the news called it last year

Evie: the green cyclone. It a lot PR to get rid of. I should know. I was in charge of it

Hades: and now this boy your mother possessed. You’re not thinking about yourself when you really should. By all means. Be all who you think they need you to be. Or be none of it. You don’t owe them or this world a thing. You never did.

Mal: is that from man of steel?

Hades: possibly. We get a lot of old used up films here

Mal: I never really paid attention to the movie besides the two leads

Evie: OH MY GOD SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!!

Mal: ...I think we need to talk. We can use your den right dad?

(She teleports Evie and her self to the den and seals the place)

Mal: the reason you’ve been pissy since the altercation we all had with Adam

Evie: he left us. With them. And I know he had his reasons. But they doesn’t excuse or lessen what he did. And I’m so...angry. That you seem fine with it. And it’s not fair. You have the height. More magic. The title. I love Doug and I can’t even say it to him. You’re the main character in this little soap opera that is our lives and I’m on the fringe of it all trying desperately to get a major part. But of course. Your story way isn’t it. And it’s always been like this. Ever since we were thirteen and I stabbed it in the leg. Got a quick hug from Carlos and he rushed straight into your arms and you punted next into the barrier. It’s irrational. And illogical. But I’m not a Vulcan. I have my own shit to sort out and it just feel like I’m constantly waiting out there for it to be my turn. I I.

(This is when “waiting in the wings happens”)

Mal: wow. And yet you’ve never tried out for choir

Evie: hey!

Mal: sorry. But seriously. You’ve been holding onto this whatever this is. For what? Ten years?

Evie: I hate that you’re right. I hate that you’re coining and I’m not. And I hate

Mal: you think I’m coping? I hate it too. I hate that he left us just as much as you do. But I do understand it. If I couldn’t be near Carlos I’d do whatever I could to keep him safe. Even if it meant ceasing all contact. And I know you’d do that for Dizzy and Gil would do that for the twins. I don’t like it but I understand it.

Evie: I guess.

Mal: ready to go back in now?

Evie: fine

(They go back to the main room only to seek new problem)

Harry (absolutely incensed): WHADYA MEAN I LOST A YEAR OF MY LIFE!

The sisters (unimpressed): this should be interesting

(At the arcade. The Hook sisters are ties back to back on the dinner table. Carlos is having a minor breakdown)

Carlos: woah woah wait. So you’re telling me. That the bastard that’s haunted my nightmares since I was eleven years old. Is the son of hades, Mal and Evie’s older brother. And you never THOUGHT TO TELL ANYONE

Harriet: why would we AAAAAAAAARGH

(Jay just flexed the cord binding the two sending an exceedingly painful electric shock through both of them)

Jay: yeah. You don’t get to talk to Carlos. Neither of you deserve to talk to Carlos.

Cj: we only require the presence of one.

Jay: English please

Gil: me. CJ’s talking about me. What do you want.

Cj: do you even care. Did you even think about them. All year long. You forgot them. Traitor

Gil (with more calmness then they deserve): I do care. I come here with my brother and our friends every Friday and I help with the relocation. As for Uma and Harry. They terrify me. They gave me the same look you’re giving me right now when I left. Uma wanted to get out of here, who wouldn’t, but when anything doesn’t go her way she turns cold and horrible. Harry, well, you know how he is. I loved them. And I know they loved me. But they terrify me. And you don’t terrify people you love. So no. I’m not the traitor. No matter what you say.

Jay: how long have you known?

Harriet: since Hadie brought him to the ship 19 1/2 years ago. I was three. I named him after meself.

Celia (unimpressed): huh inspired.

Harriet: if pa knew he had made it with a god who can take a lady’s form at will and sired a child in the process. Harry wouldn’t have lived to say his first words. And don’t either you dare say that it woulda been a good thing

Carlos (muttering): well

Harriet: SHUDDIT. It didn’t help. Father hated him. Insulted him. Tried to hurt him. It’s why I broke both his legs and poked out his eye. Everything I’ve ever done is to protect my brother and sister. And I’ll not have him be put at risk because his whore of a mother couldn’t keep her pissing mouth shut!

Jay (chuckling): I’m sorry have you MET your brother?

Harriet: yes. He’s an angel has a great respect for women. Would kill for his family. I raised him right

Carlos: I just hope that mom and Evie kill him before he gets here

(In the lair Harry’s having one of his patented meltdowns)

(Evie walks up to her mortal older brother and slaps him around the face so hard he spins in perfect 360 and falls on his face slapped cheek landing on the floor painfully)

Harry: owwww

Mal: you’ve lost a year of your life. Big rotting whoop. You’re still nineteen

Harry: that’s even worse. I should still be young and beautiful

(The girls burst into hysterical laughter. So much so they actually start choking on air. Their brother is unimpressed)

Harry: so not only do you hate me. You think I’m ugly

Mal (trying very hard to keep a straight face): you are not a 12 year old girl and I am not your mother. So yes. Your hideously repulsive to me. More to the point. You’re nothing. You were born nothing. And god willing you’ll die nothing. You repulse me and everyone you know. The only reason our cousin ever kept you around is because she felt sorry for you

(Harry slaps her around the face. In turn she punches him in his face. Then uses magic to screw him up into a tiny little ball. And kicks him into the tv. After which he unfurls himself looking very much the worse for wear. This is when “you’re a mean one mister Hook” happens. After the song)

Evie: so you think we can leave him here as a moulding husk?

Mal (ruefully glancing at their father): I highly doubt it. The Samaritan here will probably heal him.

Evie: ooh idea time

Mal: yeah.

Evie: a repeat of last year. We take it hostage. And make Uma comply to our demands.

Mal: hmmmmm tempting. Can we still keep it beaten bloody and broken.

Hadie: ok this has been alluded to but I gotta know! What did he do. If he’s just in a different gang to you what could he have possibly done to make you hate him so much?

Mal: he attacked my son five years ago. He kidnapped my boyfriend and tried to throw him to sharks

Evie: he extorted my daughter for protection money. He fought my boyfriend last year

Harry: the dwarf stabbed me in the dick

The sister rotten: YOU DESERVE IT

Mal: he’s a foul vile disgusting little troglodyte who deserves eternal torment

Evie: he’s literally a bastard son of a bitch, father

Hades: somehow I think that was directed at me

Evie: ohoho if you’re ever going to be sure of anything in your too long life, be sure that every insult I currently have racing around in my brain is directed at you

Mal: we should get going

Evie: agreed

Mal: first though dad. Two questions. One. May I have the ember please? (He tosses it to her). Much obliged. Two. Come with us. Please?

Hades (looking guiltily ashamed): ah

Hadie: our dear old dad has barely left the lair. Yesterday’s incident was the first time he’s gone that far since

Evie: my second birthday. Of course

Hades: I’m sorry. I am so so sorry. I just. I can’t risk you, any of you, getting hurt because of me.

Mal (disappointedly): ah. Oh well. That’s fine. Long shot anyway. C’mon E. Wait.

Hadie: what’s wrong.

Mal: that (she points at Harry’s unconscious form). What’re we gonna do with it?

Evie: we’re gonna have to take him with us. A genuine hostage situation. If Uma tries anything. We threaten it’s life

Mal: I like those odds. (She conjures up a hair thin coil of rope and hogties Harry with it). There. That should do the trick

Hadie: doesn’t that hurt him

The sisters rotten: who cares?

(They leave the lair with the pirate railing behind like a deformed balloon. Once they’re at the arcade Evie stops Mal just before the dragon goes inside )

Evie: wait wait wait!

Mal: what what what?

Evie: ok. First of all. Uncalled for. Second of all. What do we tell the others about that?

(She points to Harry)

Mal: the truth

Evie: ok I know you have this “I don’t lie” policy, which is frankly bullshit, but sometimes lying is better

Mal: they’ll find out anyway. No use in letting it fester. C’mon

(They enter the arcade. And immediately notice the hook sisters chained up on the table)

Mal: hey guys. What’s going on?

Jay: they stole our bikes. Mine and Carlos’s bikes they were trying to find Pennywise

Harriet (happy cry/laughing): oh my god. You’re alive AAAARGH

Jay (holding the ignited and still burning chain): hush bitch.

Carlos: is it true mom?

Mal: yes.

Carlos: you and Evie I understand. But him. Dear god hades have some self respect

Evie: Hook thought she was a mermaid

Carlos: she?

Jay: take all three of them hostage. If Uma tries anything. Off them one by one

Carlos Evie and Celia: agreed

Mal: Gil, buddy, you’ve not said anything yet. You ok?

Gil: how is he?

Facillier: he’s fine son. He’s preserved. Intact. He’s

Gil: is he still mad. About last year.

Cj: if he’s retained the sense Harriet taught him he’ll be mad as all get out

Carlos: we’ve got to wake it up don’t we?

Mal: sadly yes. Jay you’re much more level headed than oh no...

(Her attentions turned to the tv where an emergency news report is airing. In Arendelle Elsa is preparing her leave)

Anna: how long are you gonna be gone?

Elsa: as long as my daughter needs me.

Anna: well then. Beat the bastards.

Elsa: oh believe me. I will.

(She takes her rucksack and teleports away to Auradon. She slams into a dome two hundwred miles from the castle and falls to the forest floor. Back on the island Hadie’s on his exercise bike. Hades however)

Hades: I made the right choice didn’t I? It’s not a good idea for me to go. So I shouldn’t. But I should. Bugger it. I don’t know. What do you think? What should I do

(Hadie hops off the exercise bike and faces his dad)

Hadie: what do you want me to say father? You did what you thought was best. I told you not to go try and give her the ember yesterday and look what happened. And now you’re asking me if you made the right decision? I can’t tell you that. Sorry but I can’t

Hades: I know. And don’t be sorry. It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have put you in that position. Oooh. Idea.

Hadie: what?

Hades: go with them. Protect them.

Hadie: really?

Hades: yeah. Iri...Mal has the ember

Hadie: oh but they still don’t like you

Hades: but Mal likes you

Hadie: good point. I better get ready then

Hades: HAHA!

(This is when “I’m so sorry” happens. After the song. In the arcade. The news caster is fear-mongering)

Newscaster: we don’t know what’s happening. The black smoke descends and leaves people unconscious. It is believed that a villain may have escaped the barrier after Hades’s attempt yesterday afternoon. The king is missing and lady Mal is nowhere to be fargh (he lets out a strangled scream as his heart is ripped out of his back. His face goes slack and he speaks with Maleficent’s voice) I know you are watching dear. So do me the courtesy of paying attention for a change. I know he gave you the ember. For some reason he took quite a shine to me so it would make sense that you are the favourite. Can not fathom why though. You are basically useless and very difficult to love. Anyway. Give me the ember at your earliest convenience and return to the isle with me and the toffs will live. Fail to do so. And I shall kill every last man women and child in Auradon until only tour pathetic little friends are left. And I will make you do away with them. Just know Maleficent Bertha that if you deny me what happens is your fault. You’d choice sweetie. (The heart is placed back into the mans chest) I’m sorry I don’t know what happened for a minute there urk

(His neck twists violently to the left and he falls down dead)

Mal: oh no. Oh nononononononono.....

(She enters a verbal cycle that only Jay notices. He switches off the tv and gets on the dinner table)

Jay: ok. EVERYBODY OUT. NOW

(Everyone hightails it outside and he sits down beside Mal on the floor)

Jay: it’s ok. You’ll be fine.

Mal: you don’t know that

Jay: I do. I do know that. You know how I know that? This sort of thing has happened to us so many times before. And you know what we do? We win. Every. Single. Goddamn. Time. And besides. You have the one thing Maleficent or chad will never have.

Mal: what? What do I have

Jay: you have me. You’ll always have me. I’m always gonna be there for you. Whatever happens. Be sure if this. I’m here for you

(This is when “I’ll be there for you” happens.)

Friends Don’t Lie Part 1

So this is my first fan fiction ever please be nice?? I am so open for feedback and requests of Jonathan or Steve!! Anyways here we go!

Warning: swearing

The sound of a horn honking broke my concentration as I was applying the final touch of mascara to my lashes.

“Y/N, Jonathan’s here.” My dad called from downstairs.

I silently curse as a scramble for my shoes and socks. He’s always early. Why is he always so early?? I eventually find my second converse and throw it on along with my backpack as I race to his car.

“I’m here the same time everyday. You do know that right?” He jokes as I pull on my seat belt from the passenger seat.

“And you realize I like to sleep in as long as possible right?” I rebuttal as he pulls out of my driveway. He just laughs at me and turns up the radio. Girls on Film by Duran Duran fills the speakers. “Is this a new mixtape?” I question, turning down the volume a few notches.

“Yeah just made it this morning! All the best pop and rock hits of the week.” He beamed as he handed me the cassette container with all the songs.

“Shut up I love The Romantics!” I screamed as you scanned the list of songs. “You always have good taste Byers.” I smile up at him. He blushes and thanks me as we pull up to Hawkins High.

I opened the door and closed my eyes as I let the cool October breeze fill the air. “Ah it feels so nice! I could stay out here for days! By the way, are we still on to go to the pumpkin patch later?” I asked as we walked up the stair of the school.

“Oh crap I forgot. I-“

“Oh my gosh don’t tell me youre cancelling again! Is it Nancy?? You know I’m all for you getting the girl at your dreams, but not at the cost of our friendship.” I groan as we approach you locker.

“Look it’s just, I could never forget about you. But I think she may really like me.” His whole face was beaming. I hadn’t seen him so happy since the day he got his record player. How could I be mad? He’d do the same for me if I ever found a guy.

“Okay fine. But you owe me big time Byers!” I yell as we part ways for day.

“I’m forever in your debt!” He responds, earning some judgmental looks from the girls in the hall. I laugh as I head into Mrs. Fuentes’ English class.

I sit down and begin to thumb through the chapter I was definitely supposed to read for the day. But my last minute studying was quickly interrupted by Steve ‘the hair’ Harrington slamming his books on the desk next to mine.

“Jesus Steve what did the desk ever do to you?” I say as I close The Great Gatsby.

He looks at me with hurt and concern in his eyes. I immediately feel bad for sounding so sharp. “Why do you care?” He sneers as more students file in the classroom.

“Hey, look I’m sorry Harrington. I didn’t mean to sound so harsh. I just- are you okay? Do you want to talk?” His frown starts to fade and before he can say yes the bell rings signaling the beginning of a test I was definitely going to fail. As class droned on Steve slipped me a piece of paper. As I unfolded it it read: ‘life really sucks sometimes. I feel like I’m losing Nancy. I’m sorry for being a dick.’

My chest tightened as I read the note. Once upon a time me and Steve were actually closer than me and Jonathan, but then high school came. Theatre kids and popular kids just couldn’t mix. He would still smile at me in the hall, sit by me in class. But the movie nights, sleepovers, and bowling escapades ended. I looked over at the boy next to me before deciding to write him back. When Mrs. Fuentes wasn’t looking I handed him another paper.

‘Look I’m no expert in relationships, but I do know the milkshakes at Bennys can cure any kind of sadness. We could meet up after school if you wanna talk?’ He smiled from ear to ear remembering all the times we went there as kids with my parents. He mouthed yes as I looked at him waiting for an answer.

As the bell rang I packed up my stuff and spoke to him, “so you gunna pick me up or drive separately?”

“You live a street away I’ll just come grab you. Save the planet a little.” I couldn’t help but laugh.

“Ah yes we’ll definitely be saving the planet in your gas guzzler. Uh, anyways, I gotta head to chem, but I’ll see you later! Pick me up at 5?”

“I’ll be there!” He beamed as I turned the corner.

My heart fluttered at the thought of getting dinner tonight with Steve, but I internally kicked myself at the reaction. Though I’d harbored a crush for the boy since the fifth grade, he would never see me that way. We’re a part of two different worlds. Plus and most importantly, he has a girlfriend. I tried to keep telling myself that I was just concerned for an old friend, but I couldn’t stop the intrusive thoughts during the rest of my classes.

Soon enough the bell rang and I went to meet Jonathan at his car. As I walked out to the parking lot I saw him and Nancy laughing by his car, and a pissed off Steve sitting in the drivers seat waiting for his girlfriend to join him. Nancy saw me in the distance and hugged Jonathan before heading off to join Steve.

“Look I know you’re in love with the girl, but could you at least try to be more subtle? She does still have a boyfriend you know.” I spoke up as the doors of the car closed.

“Y/N, you know I’d never condone any kind of cheating. We’re just friends.”

“Jonathan, we’ve never hugged each other like that. If you really want this you have to talk to her. I think you guys are really hurting Steve and that’s not fair to him.” He shifted into the seat uncomfortably. He knew I was right. We sat in silence before a few seconds before he spoke up.

“I know it’s wrong. And I don’t want to hurt Steve. But being around her is like a drug. I just can’t stay away. You know she invited me to the Halloween party at Tinas. Practically begged me to go. And I said yes.” I stared at him in shock. Jonathan Byers at a party? I never thought I’d see the day.

“I mean that’s good for you. I’m really glad you’ve met someone who makes you happy, but you have to think about Steve. I mean aren’t they going to that together? I heard them talking about their couple costume a few days ago in home room.” His smile faltered as I finished.

“Yes they are...”

“Look Jon, I love you. And I want you to be happy. But you need to tread carefully around all of this. Or you and Steve could end up getting hurt.” I reached out for his hand and he took it in his. We gave each other a look of understanding and rode to my house in silence while The Talking Heads filled the car.

Flash forward to five on the dot. The doorbell fills the house as I bound down the stairs before my dad could answer and interrogate the poor boy. Luckily I was faster and open the door to Steve smiling down on me.

“Hey! Ready to go?”

“Yes! Those milkshakes are the only thing that got me through the day!” He laughs as we get into the car.

“How do you like Devo?” He asks reaching towards the stereo.

“Oh I love them! Their new album was killer.” I say as he turns up the volume. We chat about our days as we drive to the diner. The highs and lows, and homework assignments. The conversation flows so naturally like we never stopped being friends.

When we arrive in the diner we both just look at each other and smile. “Man this place hasn’t changed since we were kids. Can you believe it?” He spoke as we seated ourselves in our old favorite booth.

“It really hasn’t. Look here I’m pretty sure this is a stain from the time I spilled syrup all over the place!” Steve couldn’t help but chuckle as he thought of the accident.

“Oh my god you go it everywhere! Even in our hair!” He choked through laughs. I was about to respond but we were interrupted by the waitress.

“Well hey guys! I’m Laura and I’ll be your server tonight, anything I can get you?”

Before I could speak Steve said “Well both have the number three with a chocolate milkshake.”

“Okay I’ll get that right in for you.” She smiled as she took our menus from us.

“What if I didn’t want the number three anymore? We haven’t been here in years I mean my taste buds could have changed.” I spoke as the waitress disappeared behind the counter. He just smiled as I looked sternly at him.

“Oh cmon you haven’t changed that much! I may not know your current favorite song or color, but I know you’ll always be a number three gal.” I blushed at his comment. It was weirdly sweet. He was right I mean I would have ordered the number three anyways. I tried to shake those thoughts from my head and inquire him about the reason we were even here in the first place.

“Well you’re lucky I haven’t changed too much. Uh anyways...how are you?” I ask almost in a whisper. I didn’t want his smile to fade, but I wanted to help him.

“Honestly, I’m not sure. I just- I don’t know if Nancy loves me anymore. She’s always with Jonathan and she tells me they’re just friends, but I don’t think just friends talk to each other more than girlfriends and boyfriends do.” He ran his hands through his hair as he spoke. I could see the anxiety and the fear in his head.

“Hey I- I can’t say I get it because I’ve never had a boyfriend”

He interrupts me before I could continue, “wait you’ve never had a girlfriend?” He asks looking up at me. I almost freeze where I am. Red being to fill my cheeks as I realize what I’ve just said. “I mean it’s fine there nothing wrong with that, I’m just surprised.” He says trying to ease my embarrassment.

“Uh why would you uh, be surprised?” I mumble.

“Well I mean look at you. You’re really pretty. And funny and smart. I mean I always had a crush on you in middle school.” He said as if it were nothing. I nearly choked on air as he spoke. Before I could respond the waitress came over with our food.

“And here we are two number threes. Do everything look okay?”

“Yes, perfect.” Steve smiles at her. She gave us one last look before hiding back behind the counter. We sat in silence for a minute before Steve spoke up again.

“Sorry for making it awkward. I mean I don’t like you now obviously. But back then, you were pretty great. And not that you aren’t now- it’s just we don’t talk anymore you know?” He was petrified as the word vomit kept coming out of his mouth. I was at a loss for words. I couldn’t believe Steve had had a crush on me. My whole body buzzed at the thought. I could tell he didn’t want to talk about this anymore though, so I finally got out of my head and spoke up.

“Um well I don’t know why I never dated. I guess I just never found the right guy. And the guys I liked never liked me. I never did have the best luck.” It comes out as almost a whisper. He just looks at me With was it pity? God is this turning into a pity part for me? “Look I just, what I meant to say was though I’ve never been in a relationship, I’ve still felt heartache, and I’m really sorry you’re going through it. I know we haven’t spoke in years, but you know I’m always a phone call away. I’m here if you need me Steve.”

I reached for his hand and grasped it in mine as I changed the topic. His expression changed to one of relief. Relief of a rekindled friendship, of knowing that even if things with Nancy crashed and burned, he would have someone to lean on.

“Y/N, thank you. I’m just so confused. I feel like I’m chasing a dream. The more I reach the more she flees. Into his arms. I’m surprised she even agreed to go to Tinas party with me tomorrow at this point. Of course she still invited Byers, which means I’ll turn into the third wheel.” He grumbled. I squeezed his hand for reassurance as he finished. He gave me a weak smile in return.

“Look I’m going to the party too. Jon is my best friend, maybe I can keep him with me for a while so you can figure things out with Nancy” He perked up as I spoke.

“Would you really?”

“Yeah. I mean what are friends for?” I felt sick even saying the words, but I mean I wanted Steve to be happy. And if that meant keeping Jonathan away from Nancy, well then tomorrow was going to be a very interesting night.

“Oh my god you don’t know how much I appreciate this! God just, thanks Y/N. You’re a good friend.” He said letting go of my hand and getting his wallet out to pay the bill. I could feel a sick feeling bubbling up inside me. And it wasn’t from the milkshake. It was that word again. Friend. Every time we said it I hated it more.

Before I could further frustrate myself over the word Steve stood up and held his hand out. I took it in mine and we walked back to his car in silence.

The drive back was mostly quite. He tried to inquire about any boys that had caught my eye, but I quickly told him that there wasn’t anyone right now. Which is a huge lie, but he doesn’t need to know that. As we pulled up to my house he spoke before I got out of the car. “Look thanks again for tonight. I feel better. Less alone. And maybe we could do this again sometime? I do miss us hanging out.” He places a piece of hair behind my ear as I take in his words.

“Um yeah, I think that would be really nice Steve. And it’s no problem. You know I’d do anything for you.”

He smiled. “Yeah I do. Go get some sleep. And tell your dad I say hi.”

“For sure! He’ll be ecstatic to hear from you. And you too Harrington. Take care of yourself. And goodnight.” I say as I climb out of the car.

“Night Y/N!” He hollers as he drives off into the night. When I can’t see his car anymore I step inside the house and breathe for the first time in what feels like hours. All I can think think about is how cute Steve looked tonight. How I wanted to kiss him, tell him that I would never treat him they way Nancy does. But I couldn’t. I’m fucked. So very fucked. Tomorrow sure was going interesting I think as I eventually climb into bed and get some sleep before whatever was to come.

Peridot: Why she’s not around often, and why there’s still hope.

K, so I love Peridot. I love her so much. More than life itself. Why is she just..never around? Back in season 4, during the whole zoo arc, she had a lot of use? Like, she could have avoided any issues getting there for starters, being a technician. And she’s more accustomed to how homeworld works than the others? When Aquamarine and Topaz were kidnapping people, she wasn’t there to help rescue the humans, or when Steven got back. And the fact that she was the one who provided Homeworld with a list of names? That’s good fodder for her character! She got Steven kidnapped! Cmon, she’s gotta have some sort of reaction! But no. Nothing until Raising The Barn. Lapis left and that opened the door for more development when it came to Peridot. But what did we get? One episode of her being sad and then nothing until Made Of Honor. And like??? Where was she when we found out about Rose being Pink Diamond anyway? I mean, she was living under the same roof as the gems! Then there’s the fact that she had such a minor role in Reunited? And only got her star because the whole cast was due for a makeover, which just completely took any sort of focus away from her star! Which we were all waiting for her to get for three years! What did she do in the movie? It was a good opportunity to get more of her. Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl were incapacitated at the time. Steven didn’t have his powers. Peridot could have finally had a chance to be a part of saving the world! She should have been! She knew about the injector Spinel used, and the writers could have at least tried to act like she was doing something! But instead she. Bismuth, and Lapis all stood and stared at the injector for what, forty something hours?!? I swear, that scene where Steven says, “I have no more friends to help me-”, completely forgetting about Peri and the other’s until they’re shoved in his face, was leaked audio of the writers forgetting my girl exists.

Now, I have a lot of hope for Peri in season six, because the writers- weather they did it on purpose or not- set her up for a lot of character growth. Some people see the way she was written as lazy too. Her being so happy-go-lucky, joky, and fun? It’s been seen as poor writing by many people. But I see something behind it. Because her character has become forced. And i’m certain the crew noticed it. Who didn’t? I still love her, but that’s just because i’m literally obsessed with her. But in all my obsessions and dozens of rewatches of every episode she’s in...i’ve noticed something that changed the way I see her personality.

Peridot has a very self destructive personality. It’s not shown there at the surface, but throughout the whole show, there have always been notes of it. Back when she was a homeworld gem, despite what her initial ego may suggest, I am under the impression that Peridot was pretty low ranking. She places herself above Pearl’s, but not much else? I’ll assume they’re more valued than Ruby’s, because Ruby’s seem to be considered pretty expendable. But like? She places Quartz Soldiers higher than herself, and while some of them, namely Jasper, are respected, we’ve seen from the way the Amethyst’s at the zoo are treated that they aren’t typically very high class. And her original devout loyalty to homeworld means she’d probably already have practically no self esteem with her lower ranking and homeworld’s obsession with conformity? Plus Peridot didn’t have any powers and that can’t help at all. And yeah, when shd joined the Crystal Gems she had to denounce the whole system, but her entire life before that point, her inferiority was a f a c t to her. Joining the Crystal Gems must hay have helped her views on life and her morals, but I’m not sure she became any healthier as a person? Like, yeah the Crystal Gems taught her basic values and morals. But they didn’t teach them to her in a way that made sure she understood, they just kinda got mad at her when she messed up and let her figure it out herself. I’m not saying the Crystal Gems did anything wrong. But like..she really learned that it was fine for people to inflict arbitrary rules onto her without justifying it and then get mad when she breaks their silent rules. Like when Amethyst supported her making fun of all the other Crystal Gems and then got mad when Peridot made fun of her. Obviously we all know making fun of people to their face is wrong. But she didn’t. And the way she learned was too vague because she just learned that if you upset someone it’s always your fault and that you don’t need to understand, just to blindly apologize so things are okay again. And in the episode Too Far, Peridot tries so hard to make Amethyst laugh. To please Amethyst. It’s why she ended up insulting Amethyst in the first place! Her need to please starts showing itself very clearly at that point. Now, the Crystal gems only ever taught her how to be a good person. But that changed. Enter Lapis Lazuli. A deeply traumatized gem. A gem who was irritable and emotionally volatile. And Peridot, who was taught by homeworld that she didn’t matter, and by the Crystal Gems that other people did matter, and had a right to be angry at her whenever they pleased for reasons she didn’t understand, was absolutely vulnerable to how Lapis acted. Now, she clearly doesn’t go out of her way to please people she doesn’t know. But she did know Lapis. She had an overwhelming desire for Lapis to like her as well. And so we leave a gem whose bound to be very sensitive and have countless triggers (and is prone to angry or emotional outbursts)...alone with a gem whose all set up not to stand up for herself and that when someone’s upset at you, do anything you can to make it right, and it’s absolutely your fault. Immediately after being left with Lapis, though, her personality hadn’t changed into the wacky funtime dorito a lot of my fellow fans (and the critics too), like to criticize. And that’s because it wasn’t until Too Short To Ride that the final piece of her self sacrificing, horribly self-destructive personality came into place. If you don’t recall, there was a scene where Peridot was upset. At first Amethyst just..comforted her. But, well, when Peridot didn’t immediately feel better and fake joy for Amethyst...her tablet was nearly thrown into the sea. This was treated as completely fine and normal. And Peridot, i’m sure, suffered for it. Because there came the idea that things worked out better if she was who people wanted her to be. Peridot changed after that. Amethyst had punished her for being sad. And Lapis must have taken it poorly if Peridot ever got angry. Those things combined with the rest of her character arc? Of course she started trying to lighten the mood whenever she could. Of course she dedicated herself to being happy and silly and making sure everyone else was alright. And this is deeply written into her subtext, most notably in Raising The Barn. Now, at first I thought that episode was meant to highlight that Lapis was a very bad ‘friend’ (or gf, however you wanna read it), to Peri. But well...the show never treated it like that. They never treated lines like “i’ve been bending over backwards for her” or “I can’t tell her how I feel” or “There are things I should tell you, but I know they’ll upset you, so I don’t say those things”, and of course “We don’t matter. Lapis needs us”/”We don’t have a choice in this.” like they were about Lapis being toxic- even emotionally abusive to an extent, which is how I initially read it. Lapis never learned a lesson. No one said Lapis did anything wrong. Of course, I do still think Lapis was wrong there (she made the choice that they were leaving without consulting Peridot. She got angry at Peridot for lying to her when she had no right to. Etc), but now I realize that it wasn’t just Lapis being awful and having no consequences.That episode was there to shove this aspect of Peridot’s personality in our faces. And most of us missed it completely. Of course, it makes sense, seeing as many things Rebecca and the other writers weave into the show are only there in hindsight. It took me twenty views and multiple rants about how the way that episode showed their relationship was pointless, to realize just what the point is. And what’s more? In the climax of the episode, Lapis leaves. Peridot is emotionally open with Lapis, the thing she’d been afraid to do, the thing that goes against her self destructive way of thinking...and Lapis leaves. That is why I am 100% sure Peridot is still stuck in her self destructive behaviors with no one noticing and no real support system to help her deal with it.

So yes, the writers set her character up perfectly for the future. Weather they meant to or not. We’ll only see if it was bad writing or a perfect setup once the show is over. And well...I hold out hope that this was purposeful. Because if there’s one thing I know about Rebecca Sugar, it’s that she’s a genius at story and character writing. There’s no way she didn’t mean for this to happen. Or at least, that she hasn’t seen the open door and decided to take that opportunity. I have a lot of respect for Rebecca, and I want everyone to know she will most likely do our Peri justice.

I would love to have any thoughts? Weather they’re agreeing with me, adding to my thoughts, or criticizing what I said. I would love any discussion on this topic because it’s been bouncing around my head for a long while now.

I got a bunch of anons with other numbers so i’m gonna just answer them all here rather than posting all separately. Love all you guys tho video games are my fave topic haha.

2. A game that has influenced you creatively? Writing,drawing, etc.

Umm??? I tend to draw a lot of influence from RPGs? Pokemon inspired my first ever worldbuilding exercise? To an obnoxious extent tbh haha. But a lot of things are like? go on a big quest and save the world and do missions for folks and shit like that? that kinda RPG character dynamic too tends to influence how I think about characters? like i’ll give them wide categories like warrior, mage, thief stuff? tho most of them tend to have magic lmao. Idk really how to explain that. Kingdoms of amalur, dragon’s dogma, skyrim, dragon age, a little bit of dnd. they all tend to inspire me. pokemon and spyro were my jam when i was a kid tho i did so much art for them haha. (skylanders was a blast also tho i missed sparx :T)

Ahaha YES! I have played it and it’s awful. I played a bunch of games that i normally wouldn’t in the name of my education a few years back and that was. god it was just terrible. idk about finding smth that i hated playing more but maybe hell tetris? only try to play that if you hate yourself. tetris is such a staple but this is torment. idk i can’t think of anything really worse than ET but if i think of smth i’ll let you know lmao.

I’ve never played either of those soz. BUT I do have all the Rune Factory games, which are p similar to harvest moon, made by the same folks i think. I love them honestly. love them so much. the third one was my fave hands down tbh. loved turning into a sheep. loved my witch wife. that’s what matters to me honestly. i don’t play games for competition really i’m here to chill lol.

A CALL OUT, ANON. yes i do. i’m always a long distance rogue type. bows and magic and traps. always. it’s a v rare thing where i pick smth else tbh. dragon’s dogma has my fave class of any game ever: magick archer. i’m sorry but you really cannot beat glowing magical arrows summoned from nowhere that shoot fifty things at once and bounce off walls. thank you capcom.

I have never played the sims. But nah i probably wouldn’t do this. i’d rather create a bunch of original characters and see what they do tbh. i’m petty but i’m not dedicated enough to make someone i hate they’re not worth that much of my time.

Isn’t this what games are for? Completionism? xbox games grew frustrating bc i don’t have live so there were always a bunch i couldn’t get but i do try. Resident Evil V and the first skylanders i have 100% on achievements for tho so there’s that. dunno about other things. maybe kingdoms of amalur on xbox?? one of the assassin’s creed games with ezio i actually collected all the optional things? opened all the lil shiny boxes? dunno which one it was but i finished it 100% just not all the achievements i don’t think.

I'm so pissed I literally lost an earring at some point today and just realized. So I ripped my dorm room apart looking for it (no luck of course) and now it's 9:30 so I already missed half of the new episode of Jane the Virgin.
