Yes!!! For me it's mostly just a lack of stuff rather than things I think need changing but I wish it had been 3 hours rather than 2.
Anyone else really love dead poets society but feel like the movie could've been so much better if they changed some stuff 😔

I think we, DPS fans, don't talk about Charlie during the school's tribute to Neil enough.
He's not singing.
Meeks, Pitts and Knox are singing, letting all their feelings out.
Cameron is singing a little calmer. You can see the sadness in him though.
Todd is stuttering words, not even singing—but he's trying.
Charlie does not sing.
Tumblr media
I'm sorry for the picture's quality.
At first I thought he didn't sing because he was angry at Neil for leaving all of them; the Dead Poets, Keating and his dreams of becoming an actor. We saw at the beginning of the film how Charlie tried to convince Neil to speak up to his parents. I think he really wanted Neil to be happy, and he knew he wouldn't be if he stayed silent and pursued being a doctor because of his father.
During Neil and Mr. Keating's talk in the office, Neil mentioned Charlie: "We are not a rich family like Charlie's" (quoted by memory). Charlie tried to make Neil pursue acting when they had different social backgrounds; Charlie could go against his parents and not ruin everything. But Neil was an only child from a family that was mantained by his father and no one else... and not particularly wealthy either.
Even if they had those differences, they didn't separate them. And both of them were boys with dreams they couldn't follow easily. Charlie was more rebellious (especially when it came to school's authorities). Neil was more of the type to go with whatever people wanted. Charlie was more risk-taking. Neil's risk in the whole movie was participating in the play (yes, the club wasn't a Neil risk; it was all of the poets').
Charlie was really proud of Neil for finally following his dreams.
Tumblr media
"He's good. He's really good."
Sounds familiar?
Tumblr media
"I was good. I was really good."
This parallel makes sense to me, especially if we analyze the very first scene of Charlie and Neil in the movie. As I said, Charlie wanted Neil to speak up to his father. And when he did and it all broke apart; Neil said words Charlie had said about him during the play.
Obviously, Charlie disliked Neil's dad. We can be sure about that, definitely.
The school's tribute to Neil was either Mr. Perry's idea or he gave the permission to do it. The authorities thought of Neil's death as the institution's problem. Keating was suspicious from the beginning because of his unconventional teaching methods (plus Mr. Perry thought Keating told Neil to keep his place in the performance, which he did—but he made it look like it was a real problem... 1950s, let's go).
Charlie didn't think this event of singing words of grief and so on was for Neil. Neil didn't die to be missed. Neil died because he would miss out on what he wanted to do. But that reasoning didn't even come across the authorities' heads.
I think of Charlie as a person who has an internal philosophy, a reasoning that most people wouldn't think of. So, when every single one of his friends are singing because they miss Neil; Charlie does not sing because this is a way to pay respects to Mr. Perry for losing his son. A way to say the authorities are right. A way to say "Neil... poor boy." Neil was miserable because he wasn't free. And his only way to be free was... not living.
I believe this "Charlie wasn't singing" thing can be interpreted in many, many ways. I probably overanalyzed it because 6 years of DPS make someone go insane eventually. What I do think is clear is that Neil and Charlie's friendship was very obvious from the start. And yes, the not singing thing is something to observe and think about... but their whole friendship isn't very talked about in the fandom! And I had the idea to write about not only the movie's scenes that have both of them, but also how I perceive it (hence why I would describe this post as a theory rather than facts).
I would love to see other people's takes on this subject too !!

i saw the dps play!! these were the biggest changes:
• neil gets the gun from his father. it's a sort of welcome back to school gift. it's on neil's bedside table throughout the whole play.
• todd is black. he's also the only poc in the whole play - make of that what you will.
• charlie getting spanked. yes they left it in, yes it was extremely uncomfortable to watch. but it was so well written and very effective for the plot: they added the poets not only having to watch charlie(!), but they are the ones who have to count while it happens. also, charlie has to pull down his pants and there's this heartbreaking scene afterwards where he's alone in the spotlight, the poets still all watching him in the background, and charlie clumsily gets dressed again. best scene in the play if you ask me.
• cameron is much more likeable throughout. they made him into a sort of awkward theatre kid? there's a brilliant scene where he reads a poem in the cave but does it so very awkwardly while acting out every word? he's like "we're swimming! (mimes swimming) and sitting down! (sits down) we (sings) sing! we SHOUT!"
• the deleted scene with neil and todd practising lines was back in. they practise in their room instead of at the lake, and neil's father comes in to tell neil to quit the play while todd is still in the room, listening. after mr. perry leaves, todd slowly goes over to neil and hugs him, and neil breaks down crying in his arms.
• the "i'm trapped" scene. neil says he's trapped and then leaves mr. keating's office, and keating is left shouting "no you're not! mr perry, you're not!" after him - but neil is already gone.
• the birthday scene. todd's birthday is on the day that neil gets the role, so he comes into school all excited like "i'm gonna play puck!!!!" and then bumps into todd with his desk set. neil awkwardly sings happy birthday for todd, and there's this bit where todd has gotten the desk set four times already, and they keep being like "funny thing is, i didn't even like it last time" "well, i think-" "or the time before" "todd, it seems to me-" "or the time before" "..." "or the time before THAT"
• there's a point where neil dances the macarena.
• pitts, meeks and chris are nonexistent. the entire knox/chris plot happens only through phone calls which we can hear knox' side of, the radio free america scene was made into all the poets having a dance party? not sure what exactly it was, they all go wild to disco music.
• cameron and charlie have this slapstick bit where they have to rearrange the props and keep arguing about where to put them.
• ALL THE POETS ARE SO SILLY. it's much more lighthearted than the movie.
• the suicide happens in the theatre.

Steven Meeks x fem!reader
Tumblr media
Summary: Steven Meeks and some other Welton academics are present at a competition they have been winning for 5 years. Welton lost the History prize to another private school, housing young women, breaking Welton's winning streak. One of the women makes Meeks lose all concentration, causing Welton also lose the Mathematics award as well.
Warnings: reader uses they/them pronouns, referred to as a female, girl, women. Meeks is pining. No use of y/n.
Tumblr media
The hall was loud. Meeks was sweating. The noise wasn't helping him solve difficult equations. With time running out he was growing nervous. Restless. He was the math genius at Welton, and he was struggling to even think. Gerard Pitts and Richard Cameron were doing more than he was.
The hall, where the competition was taking place, was asked to quieten down. A man who was round and grey-haired was talking into a microphone. He announced "The Excellence in Historical Writing award goes to the Ladies' College. We ask for two student representatives to approach the front to receive their award."
The hall erupted into applause. The Ladies' College table began to holler and cheer for their friends who stood. One of the two who stood wore the dull, navy-blue uniform of a lengthy skirt and boxy button up shirt with a heavy blazer and made Meeks turn as red as his hair. Their joy and confidence that radiated off of them made Steven feel the same way. Once they were at the stage holding the award and smiling for a photo, Meeks smiled too. The hall was quiet at that point. Quiet enough for Meeks to hear a faraway "Thank you." from the awarded girl and snickering from Pitts who was sat next to him.
Meeks stomped on his foot under the table.
Cameron was sick of his teammates being distracted by things as simple as girls. "If you're so interested in her, go and say something. You're not doing anything here, Meeks." Cameron was frustrated, talking through his gritted teeth.
"Yeah, Meeks. I'll go with you. They're at the food table with their friend." Pitts offered, attempting to sooth Cameron's insult.
Steven weighed the options out in his head. He could nail the exam, which he wasn't sure he could do because of the distracting beauty of the History girl. Or he could attempt to meet the girl, and maybe, with some charm win her over. Both, to Steven Meeks were very poor options at the time, but he decided the latter had slightly better odds with Pitts by his side.
Pitts and Meeks stood up from their table and approached the food tables where the girls prepared slices of cakes and tea for their table. Pitts went to make a cup of tea, putting him in place for a conversation.
"How is your team looking for math?" Pitts asks the girls' friend as he stirs sugar into his tea.
The girl Meeks failed to acknowledge began to talk animatedly to Pitts about the poor questions chosen for the examination. Pitts became too engaged in conversation to help Meeks, leaving the red head to stand awkwardly in front of the girl who drew his interest initially. Meeks couldn't bring himself to say anything. Maybe it was nerves. Maybe her presence was so important and radiant that it shouldn't be ignored with talk.
"You're here for math?" A quiet question left the girl's mouth. They also held a cup of tea, and they took a sip after asking the question.
"Yeah, yes." Meeks fumbled his answer. Wringing his hands tightly as he spoke. "Did you do the History essay?"
They smiled at that. They blushed and looked at the wooden floors beneath them. "Yes, I did." They looked back up at Meeks with excited eyes, "Sad I took the Welton crown?"
Meeks smiled at that. They were playful. Steven let out a small laugh of relief. "No not at all. Suits you more than us." Meeks looked at the girl, cautious of their reaction, hoping he hadn't put his foot into his mouth like he so often did.
They smiled, blushed then took a step closer to Meeks. "What's your name? I'd also like to know if you're bribing the math win from us, considering you are charming me." They spoke, knowing their words, confidently.
Meeks blushed, turning red again. He began to laugh at their statement. "It's Steven Meeks and this isn't a bribe. My friends saw me looking at you and made me leave the table because I was slowing them down. You were a pretty distraction." Meeks couldn't believe what he was saying. He was not one to do this.
Suddenly, the girl pushed her arm towards Meeks, with a pen extended in their other hand. "Can I have your phone number, Steven? The school one or your family's one. Do you board at Welton?" All of these fretful questions were asked as Meeks quickly wrote the school's phone number down onto their skin in a hurry to calm them. He gently let go of their arm and held the pen back at them.
"I board at Welton, but we leave the campus on weekends. Maybe you'd want to join me one weekend?" Meeks was asking a girl out on a date. He was red in the face and still sweating. It was no longer loud in the hall though because all Meeks could hear was their acceptance to the proposed date.
Cameron suddenly turned Meeks with a firm hand gripping his shoulder. "What are you doing Meeks? We just lost the Math prize. Dr Hager is going to kill us." Cameron was angry at Pitts but more so Steven. He began to drag Meeks away from the two girls by the collar of his blazer. Cameron couldn't handle more homework. Meeks could, if he got to see a pretty girl because of it.

“secret admirer” - dead poets society (part 6)
summary: y/n is introduced to the dead poets society and faces a shocking realization
pairing: anonymous!dead poet x gender neutral reader
word count: 1.2k

Tumblr media
Morning was quickly melting into the afternoon, and Y/N had yet to get out of bed
Currently, they were staring at the ceiling, thinking about a certain brown haired annoyance. Thinking about how nice his voice sounded when he recited Shakespeare—about how nice his voice would sound reciting the poetry being delivered to them. He wasn’t that bad when Y/N really thought about it.
They needed to stop thinking.
Thankfully, a distraction swiftly entered the room, launching a muffin at Y/N’s head.
“If you’re not going to get out of bed, you at least need to eat something,” Quinn started in on Y/N, “are you dying? Be honest.”
“Physically? No.” Y/N grimaced, “Bran? Really?”
“If you wanted a chance at anything good, you should have gotten out of bed.”
A stare down.
“You’ve been shutting me out, Y/N. Remember when we used to be friends?”
Y/N picked at the muffin, mumbling, “It’s not on purpose.”
Quinn’s frustration turned to worry as they sat on the edge of Y/N’s bed.
“What’s going on with you?”
“I don’t know. My parents are on my ass about my grades, I have a fat crush on a stranger, and all my time is being taken up by schoolwork that I couldn’t care less about.”
Quinn smirked at Y/N, “Seems like you do know, bud.”
“I just wish I knew what the end goal was,” Y/N’s voice cracked, “if he even has one.”
“He has to come forward at some point, Y/N. Either that, or he slips up and you find out anyway. If he doesn’t, then he’s a coward and doesn’t deserve you anyway.”
“I guess you’re right.”
“I usually am.”
_________________________________________
Y/N ventured out for dinner that evening after spending the afternoon ignoring their responsibilities with Quinn.
They were enjoying themselves until six familiar boys entered the dining hall. Usually Y/N would be happy to see them, but today their presence did nothing but remind them of all the bad emotions swirling around their head.
The group of boys gave Y/N friendly smiles and a few waves from across the room as Meeks broke off and headed their way.
He sat down in the empty seat beside Quinn, blushing slightly.
Meeks gave Quinn a small smile and a nod before turning to Y/N, “Will you be there tonight?”
Y/N pushed some stray carrots around their plate, “I don’t know, Steven…”
“Y/N, you have to come,” a nervous glance at Quinn, “you’ll understand. Might even help feed your soul a bit.”
“…Okay.”
“Okay?”
Y/N couldn’t help but to smile, “Yes, nerd—I’ll be there.”
“You won’t regret this. Trust.”
The boy shot a smile at Y/N, and then to Quinn before leaving the table—returning to his friends that had been periodically sending confused looks across the room.
Quinn was gaping at Y/N.
“What was that? Where are you going? Is he going to kill you? Should I be worried?”
Y/N let out an incredulous laugh, “I think I’ll be fine…not really sure where we’re going, though.”
“To his killing lair, probably.”
“I could take him.”
_________________________________________
Y/N slipped outside that night and was thankful that the temperature had yet to drop below freezing.
They were going to ditch if Meeks didn’t show up in the next five minutes. A guard dog was barking in the distance, and Y/N didn’t need a demerit on top of everything else.
Meeks’ hushed voice calling their name snapped them out of their thoughts. Pitts was trailing along behind him.
“Come on,” Meeks took Y/N by the wrist, “follow us.”
The further the trio moved away from campus and into the woods, the more worried Y/N was that Quinn was right.
“You guys aren’t taking me out here to kill me right?”
The boys laughed with a chorus of “no” and “trust us.”
“You sure,” Y/N grinned, “the cloaks aren’t really helping your case.”
Meeks exclaimed, “It’s cold!” as Pitts simultaneously laughed out, “it’s not a ritual killing if we don’t wear matching outfits.”
“Not funny,” Meeks pointed an accusatory finger at Pitts before looking at Y/N, “we’re here—watch your step.”
Y/N entered the small cave and was met with varying looks of surprise from four other boys.
“What the hell are they doing here?” Charlie blurted out.
Neil stepped forward, pushing on Charlie’s shoulder so he would take a seat, “Don’t mind him, Y/N. You’re more than welcome to be here.”
Y/N gave the boy a smile, looking around the cave in awe, “What is this?”
“This,” Knox outstretched his arms, gesturing around the small space, “is the Dead Poets Society.”
“Holy shit,” Y/N let out a small laugh.
“Here, take a seat,” Meeks guided them to a flat outcropping of rock before looking around at the others with a smile, “let’s get started.”
_________________________________________
After the boys threw a variety of snacks onto an outstretched coat, they recited an excerpt from a worn looking book.
Thus, the meeting commenced.
The boys went around the circle, reading various writings from the book and some of their own creation. Y/N’s heart felt lighter than it had in a very long time.
Todd held out the book in offering, his eyes twinkling in a way they had never seen, “Y/N?”
Y/N took the book with no hesitation, flipping through the pages until it landed on one of their favorites from Whitman.
Whoever you are, I fear you are walking the walks of dreams, I fear these supposed realities are to melt from under your feet and hands Even now your features, joys, speech, house, trade, manners, troubles, follies, costume, crimes, dissipate away from you, Your true soul and body appear before me, They stand forth out of affairs, out of commerce, shops, work, farms, clothes, the house, buying, selling, eating, drinking, suffering, dying.
Whoever you are, now I place my hand upon you, that you be my poem, I whisper with my lips close to your ear, I have loved many women and men, but I love none better than you. O I have been dilatory and dumb, I should have made my way straight to you long ago, I should have blabb'd nothing but you, I should have chanted nothing but you. […]
The boys cheered—Y/N’s heart soared.
I could easily fall in love with any of these boys, they thought, my poet could be anyone here, and I would be the happiest person on the planet.
Charlie—who had been uncharacteristically quiet thus far—gently took the book from Y/N, standing up as he cleared his throat.
“This poem,” Charlie thumbed through the book before looking around the cave, his eyes lingering on Y/N’s for a beat, “reminds me of someone whom I admire.”
She walks in beauty, like the night Of cloudless climes and starry skies; And all that’s best of dark and bright Meet in her aspect and her eyes; Thus mellowed to that tender light Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less, Had half impaired the nameless grace Which waves in every raven tress, Or softly lightens o’er her face; Where thoughts serenely sweet express, How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.
And on that cheek, and o’er that brow, So soft, so calm, yet eloquent, The smiles that win, the tints that glow, But tell of days in goodness spent, A mind at peace with all below, A heart whose love is innocent!
Y/N suddenly had tunnel vision, and they barely registered Neil springing into a Shakespearian monologue.
Dalton? That poem—could he really?…

au idea - dead poets society but the events of the film take place during the year the film was released, 1989.
on the cusp of the 90s, knowledge and tolerance of gay people (though likely not among any of the main characters families) would be more widespread, possibly leading to developments among them all. tons of music for them all to enjoy... yes i am very indulgent with giving characters i like very thought out music tastes. nobody can convince me todd wouldnt like poetic folksy music like bob dylan, joan baez and nick drake. if neil liked anything he'd like 80s pop and queen; same with charlie. meeks and pitts would have more alternative tastes in thanks to running a radio club at welton and tuning into local college radio. not too many ideas with everyone else. the story would still revolve around youth trying to seize their day and break out from what is expected of them, with keating still being an encouraging force to the boys.
this idea came to me on a whim so if anyone has any more ideas to add that would certainly be neat ^u^ regardless, enjoy another au from me.

loveeeed your dps headcanons! could you write something about them taking you to the school dance (+asking you to go with them) 🥺✨
Omg yes, this is such a cute idea! 🩷
Dead Poets Society and asking you out
Masterlist
Neil
He’s nervous, but not really. More excited than anything. He just hopes you don’t say no because the more he thinks about it the more excited he gets. Which is why he ends up blurting it out in a rush, ruining his entire plan that had flowers and chocolates involved.
Todd
He’s red, more than he has ever been in his life. You fear you may have to call an ambulance because of how flushed he is. He’s stuttered over the same word damn near ten times and finally all he gets out is ‘dance’. You blush once you realize what he’s doing. All you say is ‘yes’.
Charlie
He doesn’t ask, more tells you where to be and at what time. You have no room to complain, you’re already over the moon over the fact he asked. Who were you to argue when he stakes his claim.
Knox
He can’t stop smiling, it’s so big and wide across his face when he asks, you’re sure you could’ve never said no in the first place. You didn’t want to be the reason he lost the big happy look on his face. When you say yes, you’re certain it somehow got bigger.
Cameron
He can’t look you in the eye. He feels so silly for even attempting to ask a girl on a date let alone you. But he’d feel even sillier going alone. When you say yes, his face turns as red as his hair.
Meeks
It’s nonchalant, as simple as sharing homework answers when he asks. It takes you a minute to even process what he had just said and when you finally do you find a blushing but hopeful boy. You say yes without a thought.
Pitts
With how sarcastic he is half the time you don’t even believe him when he asks. It’s not until you realize how frustrated he’s getting you know he was serious. For the first time you don’t give a sarcastic response back and say yes.

Steven Meeks x (GN!) Piano Player!Reader
In which: You are a church pianist for the Welton church whose gentle melodies caught the attention of Steven Meeks.
A/N: Ok before we start I wanted to say a demon possessed me and I wrote this all in a span of like...a hour. There will be more to this I promise you, it'll probably be like a slow burn due to us not being able to see Meeks often. I tried to make this like as ambiguous as possible but this is my first real fic and everything. Also sorry if it's bad I typed this in my phones notes app😭😭 THERE IS NO SMUT IN THIS AND THERE WILL BE NO SMUT
Chapter 1:
As the snow gently fell on the campus of Welton, there was loud chattering throughout the air. Boys young and old piled into the chapel for Sunday worship crowding the pews as they squeezed in tight beside each other. Their flushed faces all looked the same from the distance as freezing white clouds of air came out of their mouths while talking. Steven Meeks was there alongside his friends smiling and laughing with them while waiting for service to start. The chapel was as cold as the outside if not worse, its rickety pews creaking under them. It was then that a silence fell amongst the boys as they stared at the headmaster walking down the aisle with you beside him.
Steven felt his friend Charlie nudge him while raising his eyebrows. He looked at his friend in confusion until he saw who Charlie was gesturing to. You sat at the old piano in the corner, stretching your wrists while you looked at the headmaster expectantly. He stood behind the wooden podium and cleared his throat, "Gentlemen," he begun his voice hoarse and rough with age, "I want you to pick up your books and turn to song 881, 'How Great Thou Art," He nodded his head at you and that was your cue to start playing. Your fingers danced along the keys while the headmaster began to sing, startling Steven as he quickly turned the pages of the song book.
His eyes met your back multiple times as he sang awkwardly, he wished he'd gotten a better look at you. The service went just like that, Mr.Nolan said a few words. You played the piano which was ,to Steven, the most graceful thing he ever saw. He couldn't tear his eyes off of you almost as if he looked away you would be gone forever. Charlie met his gaze and smirked before leaning forward and whispering some obscene things in his ear. Steven looked at him incredulous, "You don't even know them, you can't say things like that," he hissed, a blush on his face from embarrassment. Charlie put a hand over his mouth and snickered, they were lucky Mr.Nolan didn't call them out.
As the service finally ended and boys piled out Meeks was the only one who stayed along with Charlie and Pitts. They studied you as you picked up your songbook and walked down the steps, flashing them an awkward smile before you made your way down the aisles. "W-wait!" you heard a voice call out and you turned toward it, a confused look on your face. Out of the three boys it was the shorter ginger one with glasses who called to you, you looked at him and raised an eyebrow. "Yes?," you replied hesitantly. Charlie nudged Steven again, a smirk on his face. Steven swatted his hand away and pushed up his glasses, "Uh I-," he started and cleared his throat, "I'm Steven Meeks,"
You nodded your head, "Nice to meet you Steven Meeks," He awkwardly chuckled as he racked his brain trying to come up with anything, "You're really pretty...," he put his foot in his mouth, "Good! At piano," You smiled at him, he was pretty cute. "Thank you," you replied and tightened your grip on your songbook, feeling nervous the more you stared at him. Charlie noticed Steven's new found mutism and decided to step in, "What's your name?" he asked and gave you his best charming smile. You gave it to him and asked him for his. "I'm uh Charlie, Charlie Dalton," you gave him the same response as Pitts introduced himself as well. Steven's face was beet red as he looked you and tried to stutter out something else, "Are you- um...gonna be playing for Welton often...?" He looked at you hope in his eyes.
You nodded confirming his hopes, "Yes actually," you begun, "I'll be here for Sunday morning and Wednesday night," He mentally pumped his fist in the air. Charlie swooped in however, "So I guess we'll be seeing more of you huh?" he gazed up and down at you taking in your relatively modest clothing. You nodded and gave him an uncomfortable smile, "Um yeah...that's right," Charlie smiled at that. He shrugged, "Well I know some of us are very pleased to hear," he side glanced at Meeks who was red as ever as he stared at you with his mouth open. You followed Charlie's gaze and looked at him for a second studying his features. You smiled at him, "I'm looking forward to it, I'll see you guys later this week," You turned on your heel and walked out of the chapel leaving Steven to turn into a babbling mess from how embarrassed he was.

✿ what if dead poets society got jelaous about their boyfriends? / dead poets society !
this is a ship content ! (if u want more of this or a ship from your preference, you can always type in the comments !)
n/a: my english is not good so i'm sorry if i made a mistake 🤍 !
🍂 todd anderson & neil perry ;
Todd is a shy and insecure guy, though he finds it hard to admit he is constantly wondering if he's good enough for Neil. Neil is the type of guy who wouldn’t care whether his boyfriend is quiet or not. He fell in love with Todd because he took the time to understand and get to know him in a way no one else ever had, and in the same way Todd fell in love with him.
It would all began because Neil was part of a project with his classmates. At first, Todd didn’t pay much attention to it but when he began to notice Neil's absence from the dorm he started to think that maybe Neil would feel better without his company and would end up sinking into his own depression. I don’t see Todd as a jealous guy, but as insecure. So when he saw Neil laughing uncontrollably with his friends, Todd would sigh and walk away, which Neil began to notice. He would approach to talk about it and Todd would admit his insecurity. Neil would smile and then kiss him, taking him along to every meeting with his classmates.
Tumblr media
🍂 knox overstreet & charlie dalton ;
Charlie is definitely a jealous guy but so would Knox, so they would always have their little arguments. I don’t see them arguing in an aggressive or toxic way but in an ironic way. So when Charlie started to notice the strange closeness between Knox and Neil he couldn’t help but get jealous and told Todd about his theory that they might have something going on, which the poor Todd listened to in silence dying of curiosity (Todd and Neil wouldn't be together yet). But when Pitts overheard such nonsense he couldn’t keep quiet and told Knox about it. This would spark a heated argument in Meeks and Pitts room, with Knox bringing up all the times Charlie hung out with his friends without ever saying anything, while Charlie would sarcastically tell Knox how good he’d look with Neil. Finally Pitts unable to take it anymore, shut them both up and kicked them out of his shared room with Meeks, leaving this two in an awkward situation where both guys ended up reconciling, promising to never doubt each other again. (Would they still be jealous? Yes.)
Tumblr media
🍂 steven meeks & gerard pitts ;
These two would have a pretty strange relationship. I don’t see them as the type of couple who shows affection in public or very often, they preferred to keep it for intimate moments. But that didn’t make their friends doubt about their love and they would always tell them how envious they were of their relationship. However a new guy at Welton didn’t seem to notice that these two had something going on and ended up flirting with Steven ALL the time. Steven being the clumsy person he is wouldn’t notice the situation at all, but Pitts would. Gerard would start being more affectionate with Meeks, always holding his hand and giving him (genuine) smiles in class, which the poets would notice and tease Pitts about being jealous of the new guy causing Meeks to be surprised about it. Finally the new guy, seeing how close these two were would shyly step away and never be seen close to the poets again. Pitts would feel very victorious after this, and Charlie (Ironically) would always remind him that he has his respect now.

So, what are the Hogwarts houses of the dps boys? (And my case for them)
Neil Perry (Gryiffindor) - Gryiffindor, duh doy. Not afraid to bend the rules and examples are: he defies his father's expectations by going against his wishes to be in the play (literally forges a letter of acceptance) and the one to suggest to start the dps club and sneak out late at night. Also a natural born leader, the group follows him and hes almost like an anchor for the group, which makes it even more heartbreaking after his death. Sorry it's short, not much to say.
Note: He's arguably Hufflepuff coded too
Todd Anderson (Gryiffindor) - Neville Longbottom situation. At first glance, he might be timid, shy, (hey don't stereotype hufflepuffs!) and even lacks gryiffindors defining trait (bravery) at first.. But he grows his character overtime as we watch and progress through the movie.
• Loyalty: His loyalty lies with Neil (the only time he really spoke out about something is saying what neil truly wanted to become; an actor)
•Courage: Being the first one to stand on his desk as keating leaves for good at Welton.
• Chivalrous: The way he acts, treats everyone with respect and genuine appreciation.
Knox Overstreet (Hufflepuff) - Hufflepuffs traits: hard work, patience, and loyalty. This can be shown by him courting Chris to be his girlfriend. He was persistent, writing her a poem, convincing her out in the cold to watch neils play with him, and loyal to her with her being the only girl in his eyes. Im not enthusiastic about writing for him or his character because of what he does in the books, so this is a bit short sorry knox fans :’)
Charlie Dalton (Gryffindor) - This man is like.. if you combined the Weasley twins together = a headache for teachers and students alike. His defining trait is definitely bravery, especially with his stunt on gale nolan with the telephone. Not much to defend about this stance, other than the fact this would be a house he would want to be in. And canonically, the sorting hat does take in your preferences.
Richard Cameron (Slytherin) - This one is definitely very agreeable in the fandom. Slytherin.. to whose surprise? Ambition, resourcefulness, and cunning are the values of the snake's house. Aside from that, also insanely misunderstood and overhated imo!! We can see how his ambition shines to be one of the best or at least top in grades with his studious nature, resourceful (im sure he had found several ways to deal with Charlie being his roomate otherwise he would've went insane), and cunning by achieving an escape out of expulsion to snitch on keating.
Note: This also fits relationship wise with the otherpoets, slytherin having beef with every house
Gerard Pitts (Hufflepuff) - A gentle giant!! (Pitts lolm i love his smile) He can be socially awkward at times if hes not close with someone with his introverted nature, but he is loyal and kind (even with his sarcastic comments, it his love language promise) loyal to his friends and keating, being one of the people to stand on their desk to pay respect.
Note: | want meeks and pitts to be in the same house ok dont judge me
Steven Meeks (Hufflepuff) - Warm hearted, dedicated to studies, and showcases hard work.. (mostly from doing charlies assignments). We can see he uses his coat for the other members to put their food on the ground in one of their meetings and hes always ready to help others out academically or not. He is a sweetheart and incredibly underrated i love him <3
Note: While he could be ravenclaw, l believe hed value kindness more.
Probably controversial:
Mr. Keating (Gryffindor) - Yes, not ravenclaw.. Just- hear me out. I believe he would've had a hat-stall, just like mcgonagall where it couldn't choose between ravenclaw and gryiffindor. However, ultimately getting the house of the lion!! I think he is incredibly wise and smart (a great fit for ravenclaw), but he also has defining griffindor traits such as bravery, loyalty, and chivalry. He does talk back to gale nolan quite a bit when defending his teachings, i can argue he showcases loyalty to the boys in his class by giving constant support, and he knows how to conduct himself in certain situations (when gently scolding charlie of his stunt). But I can definitely see him in Ravenclaw too and its totally fine if you hc that!!
This is referencing my defense off two characters who are incredibly witty (mcgonagall and hermione), however still sorted into gryiffindor.
NOTE: !!! This took me an hour to write and i still love ravenclaws sorry theres no rep here:") but these are just my hcs for these characters

Here are my thoughts on the DPS book organized into pros and cons because they’re buzzing in my head and I have to share them with somebody.
Pros:
-the movie played in my head while I was reading because it’s incredibly similar despite some changes (you can see here which changes I’m happy and unhappy about)
-some scenes in the book were scenes cut from the movie, so I thought that was nice
-it made me laugh and want to be part of it <3
-it’s a fast read, but I was still immersed. the chapters are short and easy to follow
-Todd didn’t sign the paper condemning Mr. Keating at the end and stood up to his parents even though he was punished for it
-Charlie being tired of Knox ranting about Chris felt like he was lowkey pining for him even though he was enchanted by Ginny during the play (I am a bisexual Charlie truther)
-Charlie wanted to kiss Gloria after that one dead poets meeting but he had to read poetry to her late into the night instead (I love Charlie, but I was kinda glad he didn’t get to kiss her. lmao suffer)
Cons:
-the author likes to use the word “moan” a lot. I didn’t really care for that (it came up more than I’ve ever seen it in a book)
-no Meeks saying “yes sir” and getting jokingly ordered around by Charlie with his coat and whatnot
-no unmanned flying desk set (however I did find Todd opening up about his father to be nice)
-no Todd saying “what, me?” to Neil’s “God, I love this!” (it was, instead, “what, acting?” which probably makes more sense now that I think about it)
-the argument Neil had with his father after the play was cut short (it felt less impactful to me)
-Knox touching Chris at the Danbury house party. I wanted to believe that part wasn’t real, but it is (he deserved that punch in the face from Chet even if he apologized)
-in one scene, Mr. Keating gives his class a pop quiz while telling them not to be distracted by a slideshow of pretty college girls in suggestive poses (I really don’t think he would do that…)
-some things said by Meeks in the movie were given to Pitts (as much as I’m happy that Pitts had more character, it felt weird)
-grammatical errors in some places stood out to me like a sore thumb (my writer’s brain cringed)
-some scene locations changed and felt very jarring to me (for example, Todd didn’t yawp about Neil in the snow or run to the docks. he was in a bathroom and the poets left him to cry on the floor)

new headcanons!
☆ THE POETS AT THE CINEMA ☆
(this got really long bc i love them so much aahhhh i hope you enjoy these headcanons as much as i do-)
CHARLIE: his favourite genre is comedy, plus movies about outlaws and teen rebels, says "so me" all through the film. oh yeah he doesn't shut up ever, talks the whole time until someone tells him to please stop talking because the movie's more interesting than how he'd dress as a pirate. every time there's a kissing scene, he turns to the poet sitting next to him and wiggles his eyebrows with a smirk. a nightmare to clean up after, his popcorn ends up all over the floor and himself. BUT all this doesn't apply to emotional movies. if a movie is sad, charlie is silent the entire time, doesn't crack a joke once and comes out of it with half his popcorn left.
KNOX: cries when watching romance, tells the poets he's not crying!! just the dry air of the cinema getting to him. insists on taking pictures of them in front of the movie poster. has accidentally thrown his ticket away instead of the receipt on several occasions. if there are cardboard cut-outs of characters at the cinema, he needs to take pics with all of them. eats a strange mixture of snacks, popcorn, pretzels and ice cream. asks "whAT?" at least five times through the movie bc he can't follow the plot. really fun to watch a movie with because he'll audibly gasp at every plot twist. idk him at the cinema is really cute guys i swear.
PITTS: needs a toilet break three times throughout the movie (tall guy small bladder king). his legs get cramps from the rows being too narrow but he doesn't care, pittsie LOVES going to the cinema. will most often go with knox and meeks, they're the best film trio. knows loads of lore about all sci-fi movies they watch, and acts annoyed at people asking questions because OF COURSE ni-bo64 has to destroy Leobor. eats salty snacks and always chooses the biggest cup of soda (meeks points this out every time pittsie has to squeeze around him to go to the toilet). loudly shouts "YES" when something he approves of happens. is the best sport about charlie's smirks in kissing scenes, he just like puts his hand on charlie's thigh really slowly and mouths 'hi'.
MEEKS: really likes movies with a hidden message, is the only one charlie will watch emotional movies with. but also just a huge nerd, him and pittsie watch sci-fi stuff together and then talk about every plot point for an hour. ORANGE SODA. really big fan of good film music. can't sit still and always steals the arm rest. doesn't talk but says "WHAT??" way too loud when a plothole occurs or a thing he was hoping for doesn't happen. is the one to buy the tickets.
NEIL: loves the comfy velvet seats. always has half a breakdown about "omg maybe i should go into film instead of stage acting??" after seeing a movie he really likes. is a little movie nerd, especially for superhero movies! loves the moment of stepping out of the cinema into the fresh night air. his snack is sweet popcorn or gummy bears. gets so excited when something cool is about to happen, he's waving his arms and being like "oh- ooohhhh- oooohhhhhh" until the cool thing actually happens. makes sure everyone has their tickets (goes into airport dad mode). laughs a lot and looks around at all the poets like "did you see that??" as if they're not all watching the same movie.
TODD: too anxious to complain about sitting behind a tall person, he'll often try to sit on top of his balled-up jacket to be a bit taller and see enough of the screen. pitts notices after a while and is like "hey todd, could we swap seats? i'd love to sit next to knox". todd only realises what that was about a few hours later and is silently soo grateful for pitts not embarrassing him. likes artsy movies where not a lot happens, and LOVES reruns bc then he already knows the plot and can relax. doesn't ever talk throughout the movie but laughs SO MUCH. mouths the lines when he already knows a movie. when there's a kissing scene he'll get embarrassed. doesn't buy snacks cos they're "too loud" and then eats all the other poets' snacks. every time. likes watching the ads before the movie.
CAMERON: asks "does anyone need to go to the bathroom before the movie starts" like fifty times before they watch the movie. hates sitting next to strangers during the movie because then he's always hyper aware of his behaviour and can't really focus on the film. likes historical movies and will watch them with todd (no one can tell me todd/cameron friendship isn't real, it makes so much sense). salty popcorn kinda guy. knows the names of all the actors and actresses.
