i feel like adding some thoughts to this actually-- i think stampede is vastly inferior to the manga. i should not have read the manga before i watched stampede. i have a LOT of thoughts about stampede that a lot of people i've discussed them with Do Not Like but here's a few

the plot is super rushed and the characters have no room to breathe. 98 was mostly "filler" but what people call "filler" is usually important character building arcs-- its why milly and meryl spend so much time travelling with vash as his story is slowly revealed in the manga. instead of that we get a subdued, nearly emotionless vash (there's no contrast to his depression so he's not even like. entertainingly depressed, just depressed), a wolfwood who's way too open about his past, and a meryl who is just... like. they invented a man to make her wrong all the time.

the voice direction is really dull in both languages which probably contributes to everyone feeling so out of character

we've rapid fire used up like 80% of the characters and plot points already with no room for them to have any emotional impact. we're using a bunch of them, great! except they're really watered down and flat, bc they're mostly just there for you to go "oh! it's this guy!!!". it isn't faithful and when you care about some of their arcs (livio) having it wasted the way it is feels kinda bad. yes they're going to bring livio back we all know this but also. do i want them to at this point.

a lot of important plot points were really mangled, like taking a lot of Rem's bonding moments w the twins and instead making them Vash and Luida ones, so we barely see Rem and the idea that she had much of an impact on Vash's psyche is honestly kind of laughable

they made knives as generically evil as 98 did but they don't have the excuse of running out of time as 98 appears to have done. they kinda shoehorn in the plant thing later on but it's clear stampede as a narrative is treating regular plants as something substantially lesser than the twins, so even knives is ok letting them become collateral damage

i actually like knives in the manga

vash esp has no agency in most of the series, and he barely even uses his gun so why are they even calling him "the stampede", he hasn't done anything to warrant it and even the humans know this bc knives was RIGHT THERE at jenora rock. even blowing up july is something someone else did to him (which wasn't the case in the manga)

speaking of jenora rock that was one of my absolute favourite parts of the manga and like, they clearly aren't going to do that so

the tomas

the plants themselves have lost all the angel themes that made the plants in the manga so iconic. they're just space elves. this also makes the twins' wings really out of place.

and like. it's not all bad. zazie and the bugs fucking rule. but i probably shouldn't have read the manga first bc i can't look at stampede and not find it wanting considering how much richer the plot in trimax is. and it sucks! bc trimax would be fantastic animated, the fight scenes especially would be incredible in motion, but. we're just. not getting trimax animated. we're getting something more generic w superficial trigun branding.

unless they REALLY blow season 2 out of the water (and i don't expect this at all considering season 1) it's definitely my least favourite adaptation of the two animes. 98 is far from perfect but at least it kept the balance of tragedy and comedy that makes vash hit so hard as a character. the entire point is that he's a muppet dumbass who cries over spilled milk while also being a supremely accomplished gunman. tristamp didn't make him either of these things.

OKAY so having now finished stampede (watching with a friend who was a big fan of the original for a long time) i have... Opinions. based off other conversations i've had, it seems like people who were fans of the original (especially the manga) are a lot less likely to enjoy stampede, but obviously my sample size is pretty small SO i'm gonna use the power of democracy

this question is NOT abt whether you liked stampede as like, a show in general, it's about whether you like it as an adaptation of trigun specifically.

Ongoing Series - Thai

I Feel You Linger in the Air (Fri grey) ep 5 of 12 - I did think the sketch was done AFTER they’d become lovers. Meanwhile, I do enjoy the creepy slipping through time moments, adds nicely to the tension. I’m sublimely uninterested in all the hets but that's normal for me. Bit of a slow episode, but I'm looking forward to next week. 

Dangerous Romance (Fri YT) ep 5 of 12 - Cohabitation trope activated. Also "lovable grandma" is a new BL archetype I can get behind. Honestly PerthChimon's dynamic is good, it’s fun to watch a Thai BL where the leads are actually both stellar actors. There’s no stilted awkwardness to their dialogue back & forth or other interactions. I also like having MarcPuwin back on my screen. NO DAMN SINGING. Finally a fun twist on the faen fatale. 

Hidden Agenda (Sun YT) ep 10 of 12 - I like that we’re seeing actual realistic consequences of coming out. Not the big parental freak out, but the small nasties of opening up as an everyday queer. This is rare in BL.  

Naughty Babe (Sat YT) ep 3 of 8 - Lap sitting, lots of kissing, one arm counter lift - thank you, boys. Stupid tiny dog (not a euphemism). Is it just me or does Max look extra pretty these days? Anygay, it’s all quite silly and I'm mildly enjoying it.  

Be Mine Super Star (Mon Viki) ep 11 of 12 - I remain enamored of Big Daddy & the Hot Doc but nothing else. 

Venus in the Sky (Tues iQIYI) 3 of 10 eps - Their history and the consequences of the confession to their friendship all seems a little sad & cruel. But also it’s just this pulp, ya know? 

(10 points to the True Geek who gets that reference.)

Only Friends (Sat YT) ep 6 of 10 - I want Mew’s moms��� story as a GL. (Not from this team, of course.) Ah even Sand can be a lying creep, best not to like anyone in this show... frankly, best just not to like this show. And ya know what, I'm pretty sure I really don't.

Could I make something clear? You can’t "steal a lover from someone." That's puerile thinking. That lover wants to go. It’s the lover’s fault (if anyone) not the one who stole that lover, no matter how much an asshole Top is. Sand’s ex is at fault, not Top. And screw Sand for thinking that way. Like his ex wasn't a whole person in their own right capable of making decisions?

My Universe (Sun iQIYI) ep 3-4 Marry Go Round of 24 eps - The premise of this is dumb. The pair is fun. They still kiss great. The actors are good. Crap story. What can you do? Don’t watch it. 5/10 

I need to rewatch Destiny Seeker now. 

Love in Translation (Sat iQIYI) ep 5 of 10 - Omg. Too stupid to live. Why am I still watching this? How many more? Ugh. 

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Why R U? (Korea Wed iQIYI) eps 7-8fin - SaifahZon (no matter what country) are probably the softest enemies to lovers ever put on screen. Yes they are very cute and I like them better than the original. However, no one can out do ZeeSaint for the count down kiss on the rooftop. All in all, I enjoyed the final 2 eps, very cute. I liked this BL a lot but I’d love to know what somebody thought who hadn’t seen the original.

Ultimately, what can I say about Why R U? Korea?

Korea decided to remake, of all possible Thai BLs, Why RU? And that is exactly what we got: a short form, clean & pretty, uneven chemistry, slightly confusing, all the same tropes KBL that kind of cliff-noted the original but with none of the heat or complex relationship dynamics. I just … what world is this? Because it is BOTH bizarro land, and EXACTLY what I expected. How do I rate something like that? In the end I have to go back to simple questions: did I like it, would I rewatch it, and would I recommend it? Yes. Probably. And probably not. What the actual hell reality? 8/10 

You Are Mine (Taiwan Fri Gaga) eps 1-2 of 10 - Office romance, broken-grumpy + innocent-sunshine. (Also cutie devil meets angel bestie hotties.) Gotta say, Taiwan is awfully good at moments of recognition. I sense some whipping boy and obsession incoming, looks good on you, Taiwan. Do I like it? Of course I like it! 

Kisseki: Dear to Me (Taiwan Tues Viki & iQIYI) ep 5 of 13(?) - Taiwan never met a trope it didn’t wanna play with. Teacher student + secret relationship, there’s only one bed but they slept together on the floor anyway... it’s a trope gum ball machine. I'm not mad, a bit confused, but who cares.

My Personal Weatherman AKA Taikan Yoho (Japan Sat Gaga) ep 5 of 8 - Uh-oh baby is sad. Yo is such a drama queen - I respect that in a boy. Also, I love it that W took it as and excuse to play Real Boyfriends. Also leaning v obsessive stalker there Japan. As expected you had to go there. Carry on, you do (and track on your creep app) you.

Minato's Laundromat Season 2 AKA Minato Shouji Coin Laundry Season 2 (Japan Thu Gaga) ep 11 of 12 - Ugh. I kind of enjoyed seeing Minato in pain and having to work for the relationship for a change. But that’s just because I’m so frustrated with his character this season and I want him to SUFFER. Sides are cute tho. I like them better this season.

Crazy Handsome Rich (Sun Gaga) ep 3 of 10 - I just can’t. The sound. DNF 

Bump Up Business AKA Bump Up Project (Korea movie) original cinema release was 9/15 but MDL indicates it's been moved to October so I'll shift my dates. Last status update. Love story between a trainee who is about to debut and a celebrity from the same agency (based on a webtoon). Kpop boy group OnlyOneOf signed on to star. They’ve been auditioning for this since Libido IMHO. You can watch me chronicle their BL MV series in this post. It’s from Idol Romance who will do sad but can do good kisses (Wish You, Nobleman Ryu, Once Again, Kissable Lips, Poongduck 304, Tasty Florida, Tinted With You).

Boyband, I finally watched the 6 eps that are available. It aired earlier this year and was hard to find. For good reason it turns out. Yes it’s about a Thai boyband so I skipped all the singing bits. I like the actor playing Juju (Brothers). Also hi Art, are you actually ageless? Lots of other familiar faces popped up like Copter, Max, Fluke. It actually started as a solid little story (if not much of a romance). The stuff with the organizers was v boring and there were 2 het sides but the rest of it was palatable. Operative word being was. Something happened around ep 3, like they lost funding as well as distribution and it just... fizzled. No real ending, no character dev, no story resolution, just blank. It’s like it DNF’d itself. 3/10 I don’t know what I just watched and neither does it.

i wanted a new fandom penname and at the time adjective + noun names were a thing. i fiddled with several different variations, tried and failed to acquire kaleidoscopicmoonrise at the time (it's mine now!!), and landed on this one. i wanted something a little spooky, especially since soul eater was my fandom at the time - though it doesn't feel like it now that my icon is a lot more sane-looking lmfao

uh. yeah. a stupid amount (like 30+?), so i'm definitely not naming them all. most active are obviously this howl blog, my main blog @commandersya, this one for danny phantom and gravity falls stuff, @howlingspacegoo gets some activity every now and then when venom stuff resurfaces, and some others i use for reblogging specific reference stuff. most of the rest are for fandom events i've run in the past.

Summer 2024 Anime Review

I am so late with this, because I was on holiday, but I still wanted to do it ^_^

Shoshimin How to become ordinary: 10/10

It should be boring, but it’s so good and so interesting! They’re just making hot cocoa and I’m on the edge of my seat. And it’s so well made, I loved the use of the backgrounds. Definitely my highlight this season.

Failure Frame: 9/10

I’ve been looking forward to this every week. Yes, it’s a generic isekai power fantasy, and you can guess the “plot twist” from the start, but I was entertained every week, and that’s the most important thing for me. I liked all the characters in Touka’s group and I like that it didn’t turn into a harem anime. I know people complained about the cgi use, but I didn’t really mind (except for the horse’s legs, wtf was that XD)

Narenare cheer for you: 8/10

I love the girls (especially Anna-cha <3), I love the story, and I love how it looked, especially the two-coloured hair. It’s a beautiful story about friendship and overcoming problems and asking for help when you need it.

Dahlia in Bloom: 7/10

It’s sweet, it’s cosy, it’s lovely. There isn’t really that much to be said, it was just relaxing and nice too watch. Really didn’t need the isekai element though, but you could easily forget about it, they didn’t even bring it up for most of the episodes.

Dungeon People: 7/10

It’s funny and cute, I love the look into how a dungeon might work. I felt the last episodes were lacking though. They kind of just forgot that Clay was looking for her dad? We didn’t even get a hint about him. Still a very fun watch though, surprisingly brutal at times, especially contrasted with the cute art style.

Why does nobody remember me in this world: 6/10

It had good parts and bad parts. I really like the premise, but it seemed like they forgot about it in some episodes, then executed it well in others. Also, why was Rinne super powerful one moment and then totally helpless the next? Whatever suited the plot of course, but inconsistent characters are just the worst. I really liked the opening song though.

Twilight out of Focus: Dropped after ep 7

I was existed about a new BL, but I had already read the manga and was wondering how they would put that little story into 12 episodes. Turns out they focus on a new couple every 3 episodes, and I just didn’t really care about that. Might still finish this though, it’s well made, especially considering the characters are film-makers themselves.

Days with my stepsister: Dropped after ep 7

I don’t know what I expected, but I liked when they said that just because they are stepsiblings now, they don’t need to be friends and can just ignore each other. And then they spectacularly failed at that. I really didn’t like when Ayase started working at Asamura’s workplace too, that just seemed weird and stalkerish to me, and that’s when I dropped it.

Alya sometimes hides her feelings in Russian: Dropped after ep 5

I mainly started this to hear the Russian (miles better than their English XD), but I couldn’t stand Alya. “Oh, I’m actually really nice and sweet and shy, but I can’t show it, so I’m mean and awful to everyone” - well, newsflash, if you act like an arsehole, you are one. When she slapped Masachika, it was over for me. I really liked Yuki though, she was so funny, and I know they wouldn’t go there, but in my mind, she ends up with Masachika, haha.

My deer friend Nokotan: Dropped during ep 1

I couldn’t even get through the first episode. It was just weird, and not in a good way. You know when you know where the jokes are supposed to be, but you just don’t find them funny? That’s what I had here.

Yes, I made notes on this, I have done it for quite a few different shows on my first watch but this completely boiled my brain so I need to type it out to make more sense of them. I also don't remember doing it so be prepared for an f-ton of nonsense

1:10 - Suppalo is a cult, I've watched literally on episode and I am utterly convinced of this already

ok so i was able to log in thru my laptop so as promised here are my in depth thoughts on korra 

so we all know lok came out like years ago so what im gonna say probably has already been said like thousands of times over and over, i think when the show first came out i saw a few eps of it and then lost interest. but i was like 15 or something at the time so whatever. 

i have noticed that some people who liked lok better have said that people who dont like lok as much just dont like change, and idk maybe thats the case for some, but my main criticisms for it come from the writing inconsistency. to be clear i thought it was a fun watch! did i like it? yes!!!! did i love it?? not so much 

i think what bothered me the most was the pacing of the seasons. now i hate to draw comparisons to atla, but they are part of the same franchise so I Will. one the things that made atla sooo good was the overall mission stretched over 3 seasons, with secondary villains providing obstacles along the way (zhao,zuko,azula). this provided characters with enough time to develop along the way before facing the big bad (and building suspense to ozai), but still keep viewers entertained through out the seasons 

i didnt really feel the same suspense when watching korra. each season had its own conflict and big bad, and none of them really seemed to come back up a lot after they were already defeated (except for korras uncle i forget his name tbh) 

i think any of the conflicts they had would have worked if they chose to stretch it out over the course of the show. the anti-bending movement and the water tribe civil war would have worked best in my opinion. they anti-bending movement drew valid criticisms from non-benders, and its really weird to see all of that vanish after amon was defeated. as for the civil war, unalaq (i googled his name lol) fell flat for me, he was just kinda evil for the sake of being evil. at first his motivations were intriguing and made a good foundation for the conflict aka wanting to combine the tribes again by bringing spirituality to the swt by force, bt when they brought in raava and vaatu it just kinda fell apart. this plotline definitely would have worked over several seasons, but i kinda wished the origins of the first avatar would have remained a mystery. i am a firm believer of not everything has to be answered

because the show was so fast paced, characters really didnt get the spotlight they deserved, esp team avatar. the gaang in the first series really all had their moments to shine, and you could rewatch the og season over and over again and notice something new every time! im not sure how well this would work with lok since the rest of team avatar didnt really get their own fleshed out story lines 

korra: had the most development ofc. i think she was a great protagonist. it makes sense that aang would want his successor to get proper training before getting thrown into avatar duties  considering he was like 12 when he had to fight the firelord. korra, whos been training her whole life, is caught in the middle of conflict in republic city, and its clear to me that her training took a priority on bending the elements, rather than being a mediator, which is the duty of the avatar. she’s like a fish out of water, and as the series progresses and we see her fight the antagonists, this takes a toll on her and she goes into a slump. it was a very fitting arc for her character 

mako: he was just kinda there for me. bit of a jerk at first and i really did not like the whole korra/mako/asami love triangle. it was all very forced imo considering korra and mako only knew each other for like a few days before they were confessing feelings for each other 

bolin: obvs the comedic relief character. the show doesnt do much for him either which is sad bc i did like his character, hes funny and has a cute design. ill draw another comparison to atla and say that while sokka was the comedic relief, his character was deeply complex and multilayered

asami: my angel my daughter my cinnamon apple. im glad asami was able to reconnect with her father before the show murked him. korrasami was cute and they compliment each other: korra, whos more emotionally reserved vs asami who is empathetic and patient but also is true to her beliefs and holds her ground

Yes, Boston deserves better but there is no other ending Boston should’ve had. Here’s why.

boston’s arc in this last ep was so heartbreaking for me personally because we see just how broken and lost events of the recent past have made him. yet, i wouldn’t have it any other way and entirely believe that boston’s characterisation in this ep is the pinnacle of impeccable writing.

yes, boston deserved better. watching him in the entirety of that new years night through 12 3/4 and 4/4 was so heartbreaking because we see someone who was so confident and self-assured of himself that he didn’t care at all for anyone’s opinion, let alone want their approval for his life and choices, grabbing onto just about any semblance of the kind of person that he “could” be so that he receives love and acceptance from his friends/nick, because the very idea of himself that he wore like a badge of pride was shattered to bits.

but i’ll tell you what. i for one am very glad that this is the ending jojo and co decided to give boston.

there’s a couple things to tackle here that’ll better explain my reasoning. firstly, i believe ton was who he was and did what he did in the initial half of the show not because he was being his most authentic self but because he found acceptance and a sense of belonging with ray, mew and cheum for being that way. when they weaponised the very version that they had been encouraging earlier, ton’s surety and confidence regarding his idea of who he was came crashing down.

but we’ve seen that there is more to ton than just the asshole he portrayed himself to be (i sure hope we agree on this), and i for one think ton also comes to this realisation at the same time as we did, which was probably only post ep8/9. within this period of time, though, ton’s also been through so. fucking. much. he lost his friends after they publicly shamed him for being who he thought they’d always encouraged him to be, became literally ostracised, came to terms with his feelings for nick, dealt with the consequences of atom’s lies (and atom himself), reflected on his choices that hurt his friends (because if he didn’t he wouldn’t have apologised the way did at that new year’s party), and that probably only covers a part of all that this man went through in like about 2-3 months. to go through so many changes, both internally and externally, in such a short period of time, while living through one of the most debilitating experiences of having one’s idea of oneself be shattered, when one used to be so goddamn sure of, and confident of oneself, no wonder ton is begging!! his friends/nick to love him and to accept him like they used to.

now here’s the part where i tell you why i think the writing/characterisation for ton in this ep excelled like very few others ever have. even as ton seeks validation for his existence and way of life from his friends/nick in order to be sure of himself, he still is as authentically himself as ever in knowing who he isn’t, despite everyone else’s constant judgement-passing. there’s so many examples of this but since this is already miles long, i’ll only state a couple. 1. ton has always been clear about the fact that he slept with top because he was chasing a momentary pleasure, and that his choices had nothing to do with mew (one could argue, “well it’s his choice, he’d know why he made it”, but if you’ve ever experienced anything similar, you’d know how hard it is to trust your reasonings over others’ when everyone that ever mattered to you uses a twisted version of who you are that fits their narrative to villainise you). 2. with nick, ton very clearly expresses what he expects and can provide in a relationship, and stands his ground even when he feels bad for hurting nick with his choice. we only see him falter with nick at that pavement scene when he’s trying to escape the loneliness he feels, and that too in a half-assed, sloppy attempt (and it’s only with nick).

the point here is that ton’s sense of self may have been shaken badly, but it hasn’t been shattered entirely. he can find his way back to being himself, but no matter how lonely, empty and cold that journey may get, he has to tread it alone because a). he is too vulnerable right now, and b). he hasn’t yet learnt how to honour friendships/relationships especially when they conflict with his own interests.

if i haven’t made it clear already, the beauty of this show lies in the fact that it recognises every single one of its characters as innately humane, flaws and all, while also highlighting the impermanence of these flaws, because to be human is to be on a constant journey of self-actualisation, regardless of wanting to be/do better. boston’s characterisation is such a well written example of this very beautiful, yet sparsely understood truth and i just fell in love with everything about boston’s character in this ep.

I gotta sleep on this finale and coalesce my thoughts, but this episode went to the greatest lengths to have each and every one of the characters tell Boston that he should "improve" himself. That his current character is not palatable to anyone -- his "friends", his boyfriend.

SO. Bad Buddy, Ep 3, Part 3/4, and Pat is taking over. On several levels.

First, though, due diligence: Possible spoilers for later eps, so if you haven’t finished watching the series and want to see it unspoiled, turn around now and come back when you’re finished watching.

So, we open right where we left Pat and Pran at the end of Part 3.2, in the boardroom of a company that’s interested in giving Pran some money to help build his bus stop - just not right now, because apparently his design isn’t actually all that innovative, and someone else has already presented this same basic thing and got there first. Pat jumps up, insists there’s a final part of the presentation and turns to Pran – who is buffering, again. Pat realizes that, yes, he is actually going to have to fix this and plunges into the deep end. He just takes over this presentation, and I think it’s symbolic of the character beginning to step forward on other levels, too. No. 1, we’re going to see an increasing push from Pat (lit. AND fig., because he’s NOT finished pushing his way into Pran’s inner sanctum, even if he resorts to wheedling his way through Pran’s door, instead of busting through his window) driving the development of their relationship - whatever that relationship is, because at this point, he’s kind of driving blind and without even realizing where he wants to get to, yet. No. 2, I also think the narrative, itself, starts increasingly pushing his perspective forward from here, to the point that right around the (climactic) end of Ep 5, we switch to being weighted toward Pat’s perspective, at least for a bit. Before this, we were very much in Pran’s perspective, focused on him; now, Ohm Pawat is finally going to get his chance to turn on his megawatt charisma and let Pat charm the pants off … well, sure, Pran, but also everyone watching, let’s be honest. I think we’ve seen flashes of it before this – I think it helps rescue Pat from being a more controversial character, given his flaws and how terrible he and his friends have been. But this is where the show really lets him off the leash and allows him to start taking true advantage of this skill.

ANYWAY, Pat tells the board members that they realize the company is interested in eco-friendly projects, so how about they turn it into a 100% eco bus stop? Meanwhile, Pran is standing there baffled, like this is the first time he’s heard of this, despite the fact the flyer announcing the design competition labeled it an eco innovation project and featured a graphic of solar panels. Remember how I promised to beat that horse, in Part 3.2? I don’t know if this is Pran getting stuck holding the idiot ball for plot purposes, or if he really is supposed to be so locked into his own perspective that he didn’t take any of this into account in designing the project, or if the props people have unintentionally screwed him over by making the initial flyer more detailed and specific than it ought to have been, but here we are. At any rate, Pat’s nattering on about 100% recycled materials and solar power, and he’s also promising that if they get this funding, this bus stop is going to be the prototype for bus stops ALL OVER campus, which – along with guaranteeing Korn and Wai some work a few years from now, apparently - is much more definite than Pran’s earlier hesitant assurance that this could be a prototype for other bus stops. Now, on this re-watch, I can understand why Pat will be doing so well at the family business so soon out of school, in Ep 12. This guy is a salesman, and he’s doing an impressive job of it, including the sale he only partly realizes he’s pitching, at this point, which is selling himself to Pran. He gets nods all around from the company board members, and Pran is slowly lighting up, so Pat’s being successful on both sales fronts. Then Pran smiles at Pat, and Pat grins at Pran, and you need to STOP THIS, Ohm Pawat, because I’m not done being mad at Pat, and you and your fk’n charisma are making it hard to stay that way.

Back in the elevator, Pat reiterates that he’s Pran’s lucky charm, which turns his Lucky Charms T-shirt in Ep 1 into foreshadowing  a terrible Dad Joke  foreshadowing, I suppose. Pran wants to know how Pat knew about the company’s support for eco-friendly projects, and I just literally throw my hands up, because it was an eco innovation competition with solar panels on the flyer, Pran. Pat doesn’t even bring this up, but he does point out the poster on the wall of the elevator that he pointedly looked at a couple of times in Part 3.2, which also talks about eco innovation. He literally grabs Pran and physically turns him to face it. Pran calls him a smart dog (ouch), and Pat snipes back that Pran should learn to see what’s around him and that Pran is always looking at him (OUCH, because that’s a little close to what Ming said about Pran following Pat around, back when Pran was … hiding under Pat’s bed). (I think, though, Pat, that you have to be doing some looking back to notice. Get there faster.) Pat grumbles about being called a dog and a jinx, which makes Pran actually look a little bit uncomfortable, and he kind of defensively says that it’s true, and there’s this awkward, strained moment when they’re thisclose to having a fight, until Pat huffs out a laugh and wants to know what Pran’s doing now, then whines about Pran ditching him after Pat helped him out and cajoles him into going to … the mall. Before we leave the elevator though, I want to make a note that they are absolutely shooting Ohm and Nanon, leaning side-by-side up against the back wall of the elevator, so that Pat looks bigger, taller, broader than Pran, despite the fact that I’ve seen plenty of photoshoots that show Nanon’s got at least a comparable shoulder width to Ohm. Nanon’s slouching and leaning to help achieve this trick, in this shot, but they are definitely working at it, and they’re making Pran look inches shorter than Pat, as well as the supposedly smaller shoulder width.

So, we end up at the mall, specifically the music store, where Pran carefully keeps his hands in his pockets while looking at the guitars like he’s afraid he might reach out and touch them, and UGH. I think I may be more sympathetic to Dissaya than a lot of people are, but this is one of the points where Pran’s upbringing just enrages me, because the thought that one of the outcomes of his “getting caught” with Pat was that he got cut off from music just hurts me, in my soul. One of the ways Wai got me in his corner early on was his demonstrated knowledge in Ep 1 that Pran wants to make and play music, and his efforts to encourage and facilitate that. Pat’s over at the drums, banging around, while I have this little emotional breakdown over Pran, and he asks Pran if he thinks the neighbors in the dorm will object to him having a drum set. Pran responds that the guy across the hall from Pat will object, we find out that Ming is apparently up for buying Pat a new drum set as a reward for being Engineering class president, and Pran makes the remark that Pat’s family is “quite flexible,” according to the subs, as he wanders over and finally lets himself touch some of the guitars. Pat mentions that Pran has a guitar, which we’ll find out later in this ep is a fishing expedition, because Pat knows Pran doesn’t have his guitar from high school. Pran responds that he had a guitar, but it’s gone and maybe was eaten by termites, which is maybe a metaphor for his soul without his music, thanks Dissaya. We find out that Pran has been using Wai’s guitar to rehearse, and listen. LISTEN. I badly need some pre-show fic about Pran and Wai at the School of Banishment, and Wai approaching the hot mess of neuroses this feral new kid must have been, and what it must have been like to get this guy to the point where he was willing to open up and get close to someone again, close enough that Pran comes to Wai’s rescue in the beginning of Ep 1 despite not giving a shit if Louis is getting his ass kicked, and that Safe knows Pran’s response will be different when he learns it’s Wai. (While I haaaate the last-minute Waikorn no-homo in Ep 12, I do wonder if part of the reason for it was to spike any idea that Wai’s investment in Pran and his issues with Pat/Pran, at any point, were romantic, because there are plenty of little clues that Pran and Wai are probably not just close, but … emotionally intimate, in some ways, and it would have been easy for this whole clusterfuck to come off as a love triangle, which was IN NO WAY the point of the show or, I think, of the Pran & Wai relationship.)

So at this point, Pat asks why Pran doesn’t look for his guitar and comments that it might still be around somewhere (like, oh, say, in that closet I tried to shove you into when my dad showed up unexpectedly while you were in my room. It’s probably a good thing Pran refused to get in there). Pran tells him to just forget it, and he’s resistant enough to the idea that I wonder if Pran, himself, has cut himself off from music - whether it seemed safer, or he’s internalized any of his parents’ issues about it and its connection to Pat. Further to my thesis that Wai is at least partially providing the outlet for the part of Pran that does what he’s otherwise too scared or repressed to do, I have to draw the distinction between HOW uncomfortable Pran seems to be, having this convo with Pat, at the same time that he’s been not only been playing music with Wai but (:coff:) using Wai’s instrument to do it. He’s NOT ready for that level of emotional intimacy with Pat, (again) yet. Putting further emotional distance between himself and Pat – as Pat, in particular, continues to use competition as his go-to excuse to spend time with and attention on Pran – Pran points out that they might not get to compete against each other in the music competition anyway, with the implication being that would be the only reason he’d need a new guitar. Pat remarks that when they compete, Pran takes it very seriously, and Pran, who has a modicum of emotional intelligence – although let’s face it, not as much as he needs, at this point – starts to speak, hesitates, shakes his head and is saved from having any uncomfortable Feelings Talk by Pat spotting Chai headed toward the music store, which necessitates shoving Pran down behind an amp and crowding VERY VERY close to him with his nose practically in the nape of Pran’s neck so that they don’t get spotted, yeah, that’s right, that’s why he’s got to plaster himself against Pran and … sniff him. Seriously, though, he is ALL up on Pran, and Pran looks like a deer in headlights, and Pat only gets closer when Chai doubles back to look in the music store again; we can hear his girlfriend? wife? pulling him away again, still telling him he can’t get the guitar he wants, but we find out many eps later that Chai’s not taking another wistful look at some guitar, he’s basically fucking with Pat and Pran, because he DID spot them together, this early on. Pat and Pran continue to huddle together, crouched down behind the amp, until Pran remarks that Chai is gone and they can get up. We get the first explicit instance of Pat’s scent kink, he asks if Pran will do his laundry, and Pran pushes him away, calls him a psycho and storms off, but not before telling Pat that he (Pat) only thinks Pran smells good because Pat smells bad. And your mama dresses you funny, so there.

Cut to night, at the thrashed bus stop. Pran’s sitting in the middle of the road, sketching ideas to present for final approval, when Pat pops up (down?) into his sights, wanting to know what he’s doing. Pran tells him he’s doing laundry, which ha! Is a nice little multi-layered snipe – it’s a call back to Pat’s laundry comment in the previous scene at the music store, it’s a pointed remark that Pran is working to clean up a mess that’s also Pat’s responsibility to work on (LIKE HIS LAUNDRY), and it also reminds me of my Mom’s smart remark when I was growing up whenever someone would ask what she was doing, while she was obviously doing a thing, and she would tell them “playing tennis.” Like, what do you think he’s doing sitting in the middle of the road at the thrashed bus stop with his sketchbook in his lap, holding up his fingers for lines of sight, Pat? Pat remarks that there’s nobody around, so Pran can talk to him nicely, which is a little bit frustrating, because that’s not the only problem here, right? But also, it gets to the heart of one of Pran’s biggest issues, about “getting caught” with Pat, so I guess I have to give him some points for that. Also, I … OK. A lot of people make a big deal about Wai needing to apologize for the Curtain Incident, and I just … that is not the first time we’ll see people NOT apologize for something in this show. Do you remember when we see an actual apology? In Ep 1, when Wai apologizes to Engineering, whereupon he (and we) learn that an apology means nothing, as Korn proceeds to punch him in the face out of nowhere anyway and instigate a full-on brawl. Does Pat ever actually apologize for instigating any of this chaos, despite demanding recompense and video for his manly pride? Does anybody ever apologize to Wai for that horrifying scene at the bar when he’s working? Instead, what we get is Pat taking down the video, standing up beside Pran in that conference room, what we’re getting ready to see here – concrete actions to FIX problems. Is that ideal? Probably not. However, while words to acknowledge a thing may be great and important, I guess if I have to choose, I’m going to come down on the side of action, of changing what you do, and of fixing a thing. Taking part in cleaning up the thing you helped ruin is powerful. Actions speak louder than words, yeah? And anyway, nobody’s obligated to accept your apology. But they may be willing to accept your help to clean up the mess. I’m sure I’m going to come back to this, because it’s a pattern in the show, but for now, Pran slightly, slightly lets down his guard, although he sort of looks around (hypervigilence! always a fun time!) and asks what Pat wants. Pat wants to know why Pran’s not answering his messages and hasn’t been home. Pran hasn’t been at the dorm, and that’s why Pat tracked him down, because he doesn’t know what to doooooo with himself when Pran’s not around, even though he won’t explicitly admit this until Ep 5, when he does it in the absolute most heart-wrenching way he could make the admission. For now, this has got to be like sandpaper, again, on Pran’s emotional wounds. Pat wants to know why they can’t just hang out, and whether Pran is this hard on his other friends. He doesn’t want to be your friend, Pat. Pran actually inches up to this issue, telling Pat that he’s NOT that hard on his FRIENDS, and Pat’s all, well I’m sorry I’m not your friend. (Is that what you actually want to be, Pat? Get there faster.)

Pran takes the opportunity to tell Pat that he’s glad Pat realizes they’re NOT FRIENDS, so go away. Which never works, and this time only goads Pat into making a nuisance of himself, when he starts peering at Pran’s sketches, asking if Pran reeeeeally wants him to leave, and practically tugging Pran’s sleeve for attention. I would kill him. Pran comments that engineers don’t know how hard it is to be creative, Pat responds that at least they’re practical, and then Pat, whose LOVE LANGUAGE is ACTS OF SERVICE, proceeds to get Pran up off the ground and literally walk him through a practical imagining of how the bus stop will be used, in a way that gives Pran all sorts of ideas about how form needs to follow function. This is a fantastic way to get Pran out of his head, and is symbolic of, like, everything about him, particularly when Pat tells him he can’t just sit and imagine it. I think this is also a kind of interesting comparison to the earlier scene with Wai and Pran talking about song-writing, in which Wai (mirroring Pran, himself), was sitting down with Pran to to take notes about emotions for a song. Wai speaks Pran’s language (so to speak) in that scene. By contrast, Pat pushes against the boundaries of Pran’s comfort zone and walks him through a somatic experience, gets him out of his head and into his body. He’s also encouraging Pran to imagine and to play in a way these two poor kids probably didn’t get to play pretend with each other very much while they were growing up, and so now I’m wondering how much this provides an opportunity for them to go back to childhood and begin a new process of “growing up” with each other before we finally get to the romantic aspects of their relationship later in the show. Hmm. Meanwhile, on the surface, we also get a lot of flirting-not flirting-flirting from Pat, who’s set up the scenario that they’re a couple and has even agreed to play the girl, using Pran’s messenger bag as his purse. It’s pretty delightful, and Pat’s face is delighted whenever he gets to watch Pran have a burst of inspiration and start talking excitedly about ideas for the design. Pat-as-girlfriend eventually pouts that he’s not getting enough attention, and Pran can’t help laughing and picking an imaginary corpse flower for him (I went down a little bit of a rabbit hole here, researching what carrion flowers are both found in Thailand and small enough to pick in the way Pran made the motions, but I’ll spare you that), and Pat’s face does a thing that indicates he knows he’s being fucked with but also he can’t help finding it a little touching and endearing. I KNOW, BRO. He IS endearing when he’s not all porcupine protective spikes, isn’t he? Pat complains about being thirsty, we get some product placement in which Pran literally feeds some tea product to him to drink before splashing it down his chin, whereupon Pat tries to tackle him and wipe his face off on Pran’s shirt (PRAN’s shirt. PRAN, who thinks the worst thing in the world is actually touching his food!) then chases him around the collapsed bus stop like kids until Pran collapses in the street again and Pat comes and lies down in the street beside him. It will all be very romantic when they get run over by a bus together, I imagine.

ANYWAY. They lay there in the street and look at each other meaningfully for a moment before sniping at each other a little bit, and then Pat offers the olive branch again by asking if Pran likes the design he’s come up with for the new bus stop. Pran does, but he’s worried the board won’t like it, but Pat has utter confidence they will. They continue to lie in the road and Look At Each Other Significantly, and I guess this is supposed to be a moment of romantic tension? But I’m kind of busy feeling sorry for for Pran, because Pat doesn’t get that this is romantic tension, and Pran doesn’t want to be his friend. Pat breaks the moment by chucking Pran under the chin, and then they predictably bicker some more.

Cut to the company board room again, when the board agrees to sponsor the bus stop but tells Pat and Pran they can only cover half the cost. TIME FOR A BAKE SALE. Seriously though, Pran is despondent as they leave the building. Pat jokes (?) that they can use lower-grade materials to cut costs and the company will never know – at least he claims it’s a joke, but he sounds serious, and knowing Ming, it wouldn’t surprise me if this is something Pat’s picked up from his dad. Anyway, Pran’s in no mood for jokes. Pat tells him that it’s no big deal because Pran will figure something out, and that was the WRONG thing to say, bro. Pran remarks that of course, it’s no big deal to Pat, it’s not his friends who are going to get suspended (which, tbf, is a consistent flaw of Pat’s – he cares about this because Pran cares about it, not because he’s helped create the situation in the first place or because he’s got any general concern for the fallout. He’s very focused on what directly affects him and his friends). Pran remarks that it wasn’t even his (Pran’s) friends who started the fight, Pat wants to know who did then? “Me?” (KIND OF, YES, PAT. Let’s talk again about what we mean by “starting” all this.) Pran is, once again, DONE with this and stomps off. And scene.

Next on PART 4: Pat confronts the Engineering secondary backup hobbits about their part in all of this, Korn continues to be The Worst, and Pat has no good reason he can offer for not also continuing to be The Worst.

I saw these questions here, and I’m in a procrastinating mood.

1. are you going to buy the new pack (cottage living) when it comes out? Thoughts on Cottage Living:

Should’ve been a Game Pack. Another display of EA cramming TS4 with crap that’s as big as the ocean, but with the depth of a frikkin puddle. How TF an EXPANSION PACK came without any new skills or careers is beyond me, but Cottage Living did it, so hey. Speaking of hay, at least the cows & chickens are better. They’d better be, for $40. Thank god for the Llamas though, otherwise I would’ve never been interested in this dang pack.

2. do you p*rate your dlc or buy it legitimately?

Fortunately for me, half the TS3 content I have I won in contests & giveaways, or it was Gifted to me. The rest I bought on DEEP sales, cuz eff buying anything from EA at full price. And I got TS4 when EA gave it away for free, cuz patience is a freaking virtue. But there's definitely some garbage out there (*cough* Kits) I legitimately think you’re morally obligated to Yo Ho Ho.

3. what’s your favorite world?

EA: Shang Simla (World Adventures). CC: Boroughsburg (Potato-Ballad-Sims). My wish is to have a world/save that incorporates BOTH--an Asian Boroughsburg, or a futuristic/modern Shang Simla, but Japanese.

4. if you use a queue, how many posts per day do you set it as?

1 post on my main blog, 2 on my personal/inspo blogs, and anywhere from 1-5 on my CC finds blogs (depending on how much CC there is to catch up on).

5. do you watch sims on youtube?

Plenty. I miss Lazy Game Reviews--I think he’s effing done with EA & TS4, which is equally hilarious and sad at the same time. The Red Plumbob is probably my fave right now. I watch Pleasantsims for nostalgic TS2 content. And I watch A LOT of TS4 simmers, out of morbid curiosity to see just how bad the Kits and packs are.

6. what are your thoughts on the most recent pack? (dream home decorator)

Strong contender for Y’all Hear Sum’n? on Kenya’s scale. 🙄

7. how many packs/kits do you own?

I will never buy or even bother pirating those dumba$$ Kits, EA can eff right off. Anyone can do clothes & clutter for free; what 👏  is 👏  the 👏  point 👏 , other than a total effing cash grab.

8. what’s your origin id? is it the same as your url?

I only ever sim offline.

9. is your simblr your sideblog or main blog?

Main blog. Then I realized how expansive Tumblr is, and created 1001 sideblogs for stuff I do outside of simming.

10. do you have a cc finds blog?

Plenty, plus extras I don’t even advertise the way I probably should. U_U

11. are you wcif friendly?

Yes. I understand that some people are shy though, which is why I try to add CC Credits to my gameplay posts, with links to the CC I use. But I’m so effing lazy that sometimes I don’t. 

12. what’s your favorite sized household to play with? (ex. 1 sim, 4 sims)

Because my gameplay is often tv or video game inspired, my households are often massive (a dozen+ sims). Sometimes I break off the nuclear unit from the auxiliary characters (often my top 4-6 characters), and have them in my active household to control them directly, while I let the other sims roam free in another house(hold) or something.

13. if you have c&d, do you play with pets?

I love the Pets EP. I can't decide which I like more: cats, dogs, or horses. The horses are 100% essential for my historical gameplay, I can’t even. And I like that we can directly control the animals--I actually wish we could do more with the small pets, too (reptiles, birds, fish, etc). IMO, TS4′s C&D is a crying shame, and MFPS can go straight to hell. TS3′s unicorns would like a word with MFPS.

14. what lifespan do you use?

Young Adult, though I use Kids a lot more now, thanks to PuddingFace’s Enhanced Witches Mod letting kids use magic.

15. if you own a lot of packs, how many of them have you actually played through?

Everything in TS3, though I’ve never been able to play through all the content. Even in Supernatural there are things I haven’t done yet. I have no intention of owning even 1/3 of TS4′s packs.

16. what do you do as you play sims? (ex. listen to music)

Listen to music--I have specific playlists for specific gameplay.

17. which sims challenges have you tried?

I don’t do challenges, I cheat too much.

18. do you like the new(ish) hair swatches?

Eff swatches; they don’t hold a candle to CASt. Hair in TS4 is 100% garbage. That clayfied crap makes my blood boil. The only time I even marginally like it is when people do those rainbow recolors; those are super cute.

TS3: Into the Future Expansion Pack. TS4: Vintage Glamour Stuff Pack.

ITF is hands down the most unique pack EA ever made. If you like sci-fi, there’s no way you can pass up on it, ITF adds waaaaaay too much good content & gameplay. But there are so many simmers that hate fantasy in general, as a rule, and they crap all over Supernatural, too. So ITF got a lot of heat mostly cuz it was the very last EP, and the very last chance simmers could get something they wanted. But considering the lack of futuristic gameplay we tend to have, it was high time EA did a pack like ITF for once.

As for VG, that was when I first started realizing that EA was doing something drastically different with the SPs in TS4. It’s a sad state of affairs that the SPs in TS4 are becoming some of its most interesting content, particularly since they’ve started adding in new lifestates, gameplay, and premium content. That was never the case in TS3, and very very rarely in TS2. Even though people scoff at the Butlers & Bar Globes, I love that kind of content, particularly for historical gameplay.

24. what are your favorite sims stories/legacies?

I really like the holiday stories @danjaley​ does; over at 3 Hazelnuts.

25. if you could change certain small thing(s) about ts4, what would it be?

okay so i have nth to say about Catch Me Baby, I'm Tee, Me Too (the often-mistaken-for-a-bl show with gun? and football boys on a lawn on the poster..? that's it, that's all i know lol), Midnight Motel, The Miracle of Teddy Bear (didn't watch cause of spoilers and refuse to watch it but i've heard it's good), The Warp Effect (i feel like i know a lot and almost nothing at the same time, i wanted to watch it, thought it was a standard straight romance and tumblr wouldn't mind me skipping it and then i proceeded to get bombarded with content for 12 weeks straight)

Choco Milk Shake - trying to keep this spoiler free, i'd say watch it for milk. that's my baby boy, he is sass, he is class and he will bring the common sense to the table; also his and choco's actor really nailed the animal mannerisms. the show is quick to binge, emotional if you let it get to you but with a certain light air to it; i'd either binge it in a melancholic mood, ready to take it all in, or while very energised so it's easier to go through it (it's not that heavy imo but i also decided to ignore the gravity of the situation so uh unreliable narrator lol); also good to watch an ep or two per day as a "btw" snack, you'll finish it before you know it

Dirty Laundry - ahhh, this one. i recommend it all the time but it's not for everyone. i think it is for you though lmao, def your type of thing; it really had me laughing at times (although i seemed to be the only one bothered with certain jokes) and although it goes into social commentary near the end, it's really SUCH a light watch; you're gonna love the pond scenes and you're deefinitely gonna love nanon as night, he nailed this role; another short binge imo, watch when feeling either very happy or very sad - whenever you need a laugh and are ready for absurdity and naked pond

Even Sun - iii wouldn't bother. i really wouldn't, i just remembered actually attempting watching it after reading some not-that-good comments on mdl back when the first ep aired and omg was it boring, i couldn't finish it. then more episodes came out and everyone's suspicions were confirmed - just a show to fill in the time before between us was released; the plot seems boring, the couple moments not really special (and considering we know what bounprem can do, that's a pity); haven't watched it though so you can very easily ignore this, plus i'm sure you'd find a lot of fun in orange haired prem being an unsuccessful debt collector (i can already imagine the posts lol); if you watch - do it when stacked with patience and are utterly bored (and also missing the boys)

Mama Gogo - aaaaaa that's my girll, that's my baby! okay, i always like defending straight shows and recommending them to innocent ql watchers - this one is my top defendee <3 yes, mama gogo is full of men, yes, they're quite naked a lot of the time but they're just not that attractive to me so i was never in for the exposure, therefore i feel qualified to talk about it lol; the cast is so much fun when you know the gmm gang, idk what classifies as found family but to me this is itt; earth? insane character, he's so annoying and dumb, he'd be a himbo if he were nicer and that's all you need to know, you'll love him. speaking of which omg this is THE HIMBO SHOW🌟i feel the silliness is gonna do you sm good <3 i had my issues with some plot decisions and the way the ending was handled, however i think you're gonna find immense warmth between these characters and there are sooo many fun moments, the serious parts are definitely there, it's a jojo show duh, but it feels well-balanced; watch it when you want smth light and fun and preferably when no one's around heh, they do be naked and grinding each episode

Old Fashion Cupcake - now this one you gotta binge i think, it's just short and well-paced enough; if you want to relate to our main at least you gotta be a bit horny while watching 🤷‍♀️ my man is so intense, it's wild <33 jk though, the mood is ''i want to see the beauty in life and feel the intensity of passionate longing'' kinda :) ah, and also hungry. you're gonna want to have smth sweet on stand-by, those pancakes don't fuck around, you're gonna crave some as much as togiwa ..anyways; everyone loves it and there's a lot of meta and analyses out there, it's a deeper show with a simple execution and great acting, the kind only japan can put out, but i personally am here for the good vibes 🥰 also read the manga if you want, it's short even with the second part that wasn't adapted (and nsfw cause yaoi so if that's your thing, give it a go; aside from cutting those scenes out though, the show's a pretty faithful adaptation iirc, i read it before the final eps dropped lol)

Our Skyy - haven't even watched most of it lol, i got into it because of pick and rome (you're gonna love the growth, get on with it) and had to handle the silliness of their ep premise; later watched the my tee special (stressed me out a bit but all in all sweet <3) and i'm lying to myself that i've seen the petekao one but i'm honestly not sure; def didn't see the insun and arthitkongpob episodes though, checked just in case :) easy to take in seperately, even if you've seen all parent stories, i feel that binging won't let you take it all in properly so i wouldn't rec but if you're one for whiplashes, enjoy! the mood is not serious serious i think but it's not the liightest, just go with your gut on these

Senior Secret Puppy Love 2 - oh jeez, this one i didn't watch but to be fair i don't remember watching the first season properly either; here, though, i skipped like craaazy, was present exclusively for pick and rome because there was a complex situation i had been spoiled about between the mains and i was not about to waste time on them; sing's character also appears again and he has a more prominent role so you might benefit from that; honestly i remember pick and rome scenes but i mosttly associate them with their our skyy episode so if you want to watch that i rec watching their scenes in this as well, just abuse the shit out of that skipping and speeding <3; mood to watch in is: patient and ready for offgunsing shenanigans as the reward (i personally for impatient-and-reads-spoilers reasons literally watched this by skipping between episodes, to the end, to the front, it was a mess but i stil remember a bunchh of their plot so i'd say it's worth it if you like those two)

Together With Me: The Next Chapter - dear goodness, this one's a doozy.. let's start with the fact i didn't watch it lmaoo honestly i skipped back and forth through kornknock scenes and ended up watching more than i was planning to.. i'm guessing you've heard the criticism on this season and so did i which is why i didn't let myself get too invested; i'm especially happy i didn't watch it all cause whatever the side couples were going through was equally as stressful; love that maxtul chemistry though, can't beat it <3 tbf i was skipping through that specific side couple in season one as well.. i am guessing i watched these when i used to read the mdl comments a lot so i've stopped myself from watching the full stuff when things seemed like they'd be too much for me; anyways, mood - vindictive (idk what that is really either, it just popped into my head ?? ); i won't rec not watching it all, i think it might be good to have the whole perspective, idk? the mood is drama drama and more drama, you gotta be ready for that spicy human conflict that gets you throwing popcorn at the screen, there's evil, there's complexity, there's just a lot of upsetting shit and you gotta be at least a bit prepared

War of Y - fully started writing bout Y-Destiny hahah, i had a few reasons i didn't get past the first episode of War of Y but genuinely one thing that stopped me multiple times was the lack of subtitles for the texts - if you find threads with translations or the version i heard was out there with subs? you're good to go. i think it's a heavy watch honestly and as far as i can tell it's revealing of things we might not want to confront about the industry; i think the different couples could give variety and hopefully that's enough cause 20 episodes is a lot for a show to sustain; some great actors on there, some interesting plotlines, honestly would be looking for a review from you on this one haha

This Week in BL - KISSES galore

Jan 20232 Wk 2

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying most.

Ongoing Series - Thai

My School President (Fri YT) 6 of 10 - The mutual squealing and kicking and rolling over in bed was v cute. Tiw might actually be the greatest BL wingman of all time, yes better than Namgoong. Friend zone? Cute GMMTV, very cute. Elevator kiss, on the other hand = you little shits. Also, I’m mad you made me watch the MV because there was no way to skip through it without missing stuff. Tricky bastards. GMMTV = cute, shitty, & tricky all in one ep. Guess that’s why they’re the top of the Thai BL food chain. 

Never Let Me Go (Tues YT) 5 of 12 - We knew that this pair kisses really well, but for the characters that was a pretty stellar first kiss. I liked that we got to see Palm really want something for a change. Up until now, he’s been a pretty passive character, constantly told what to do by others, this is the first independent choice his character actually makes in this narrative. Meanwhile the action part of the bodyguard plot has begun, which makes me happy. Let the forced proximity cohabitation trope commence! With probably at least one running through the woods holding hands to come.

Between Us (Sun iQIYI) 9 of 12 - Basically a filler ep with in-your-face backstory we already sussed. Prem is doing a good job tho. WATCH ALONG HERE.

609 Bedtime Story (Fri WeTV) 8 of 11 - There was no GamesVee. I’m sad. 

Cutie Pie 2 You (special) 2 of 4 - Awwwww, how sweet they tried to give it a plot. Operative word being: tried. 

I Will Knock You (Fri Gaga) 9 of 12 - Stuff in tents. Lots of cringing blushing maiden bullshit. Noey = v bold and into public claiming. I’m not wild about this one. 

Remember Me (Sun Gaga) 14fin - Honestly, they were branded pairs so we knew ManTitle were goona kiss, but I kinda wish they hadn’t bothered. These characters just didn’t work for me as a couple. Marriage equality stinger* on this puppy. Still, what a slog. I’m only binging stuff from this studio henceforth. (Next one: Buddy Line Y Animal). Whatever. Frankly that’s my review of the show: whatever. 5/10 

* I do like that this drama teased a marriage and then intentionally never gave us that marriage on screen. For all romance genre fans, this would've felt like a slap in the face. Instead they put in a stinger that essentially said “if you want a marriage scene between men, legalize marriage in Thailand, you fuckers.” And ya know, I’m here for that. 

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

The New Employee (Korea Weds Viki) 4 of 8 - Ooo first date. Omg they are SO CUTE. There was a lot of squealing and flapping of hands on this side of the screen with the show. Also two out gay boys! Korea how far you have come in just a few short years! If adorable our baby boy’s 2 fag hags don’t get together by the end of this show, I will be a touch disappointed. (It has to be said. I’m not expecting it because this is still Korea doesn’t do sides in BL. But hope springs eternal.) Meanwhile, I like that there was actual desire expressed with these two. This is definitely one of the gayest BLs to have come out of Korea in recent years. If you’re confused like I was, that pen has the initial of baby’s ex crush from uni on it. 

HIStory 5: Love in the Future (Taiwan Weds Viki) 3 of 10 (or 6 of 20) - Classic that Taiwan has finally given us a femme character in a BL and he is predatory & evil. The secondary couple is the most adorable thing, I even forgive them a pratfall kiss, because there was a 3 piece suit involved. I am starting to like the main couple a little bit more, mostly because of the rich kid character. I love domesticity, and Taiwan always does it so well. The main character time traveler whatever remains a bit annoying, I prefer a sunshine archetype that is not intentionally naïve to the point of stupidity. Still, I’m invested. This is classic HIStory franchise. 

Candy Color Paradox AKA Ameiro Paradox (Japan Fri Gaga) 4 of 8 - It’s a bit too much second hand embarrassment and cringe for me. I hope Japan someday gives us a BL like Eternal Yesterday, where both characters are cool and no one dies. Incidentally, if you’re playing a game of spot that BL actor, the one playing the “actor character” is Izuka Kenta  (from The Novelist and Absolute BL2). WE LOVE HIM. 

The Director Who Buys Me Dinner (Korea Weds iQIYI) 9-10fin - I honestly don’t know how I feel about this one. It was more of a red thread fated mates who are fated to repeat the mistakes of the past. Shall we call it faded mates?  And I’m not sure, even though the ending is somewhat optimistic, that I am actually optimistic about it or them as a couple. So I wouldn’t call it HEA. 

Final review? Featuring a gorgeous & stellar cast, TDWBMD should have utilized them less for melodrama and more for chemistry. This BL is a unique twist on an office romance if NOT a unique twist on a doomed red thread trope, resulting in it feeling less than the sum of its parts and ultimately unsatisfying. Possibly this had to do with the fact that this was one of those KBLs where I felt how short it was the whole time, like I was missing something constantly, in every episode. No HEA. Worth watching for some but seriously flawed. 6/10

Fall anime 2020

And wow, it’s the last season of 2020! May the new year be a lot better, not just anime related!

Alongside the continuations and new seasons like fire force, danmachi,  mahouka koukou no rettousei, golden kamuy and so, these are the new shows that we started:

100-man no Inochi no Ue ni Ore wa Tatteiru 

It is pretty typical isekai anime, just that it has twist and they can go back to their world every time they do a quest. I could see potential in characters and their development, but they aren’t kind of characters I would care about or watch something with meh plot for. Maybe they are building up for something cool, but for now, it was kind of boring for me.

Akudama Drive 

Overwhelmingly cool show about criminals in a dystopian future world. There is not much to say about the story without spoiling other than being so unnecessary cool that I loved it an unnatural amount! The characters, the setting, the action scenes, the animation and conversations, everything is just so aesthetic! I looked forward to it every week! Gonna miss them a lot. Just beware of a lot of violence and blood scenes (even though they are mostly censored).

By the Grace of the Gods 

A really soft isekai with a boy who tames slimes. This is that one (at least) show of the season where you can just turn off your brain, watch some cuteness and forget about everything. It comes with no strings attached, you can drop it halfway and not think twice about it, it won’t make you feel bad in any way, just happiness and rainbows, and sometimes that’s what I need.

Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- Rhyme Anima 

Women rule the world and pretty boys rap to assert dominance. That’s it, that’s the premise and if you think that ridiculous, yes, it truly is haha If you want to have a laugh, listen to some rapping (can’t say much about the quality of it, but I enjoyed it immensely, good va’s!), go watch it. The plot quality is debatable to say the least, but it’s not really an anime about the story, rather about the 12+ guys and their friendships and rivals and well... rap.

Ikebukuro West Gate Park 

Although a little bit on the improbable side to happen IRL, Ikebukuro WGP showcases multiple situations where we dive behind the back of many realistic happenings in bigger cities. There is always some company in conflict with another thinking solving it in their way is the best possible choice, not taking into consideration what happens to the little people bearing their consequences. It is of course up to the “good mafia” guys to solve it. If you are reading the Webtoon Weak Hero and are in search for some more realistic gang divisions, then feel free to give this anime a try. It has a pretty lovable and crafty MC minus the high-school setting.

Jujutsu Kaisen

Ohh my where to start xD yes, you are looking at the fan favorite anime of this season and there is no doubt about it having that title. I can go on and try to convince everyone saying it has the perfect animation, soundtrack, appearance of the characters and so on but to truly experience it, you will have to watch it. Character development is on the slower track but it is understandable since it is obvious that the series will be a “long distance runner”. What impressed me the most is the perfect balance of humor and tragedy, so if you are one to typically enjoy shonen anime, give it definitely a try through the 3 episodes rule!

Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear 

A girl got isekai’d in a game and now finds friends and people she cares about. Oh and she’s in a bear suit. This was one of those shows I watched for relaxation. There are no bad emotions coming from it and you can just relax, watch something that doesn’t need you to turn on your brain and try to be happy. Majo no Tabitabi 

A witch that travels the world, visiting many cities and meeting a lot of people, hearing their stories and moving on. Not action packed, but has things happening throughout the eps. I thought it would be another happy show, but it turned to be quite dark in some episodes. Most episodes have their separate story with minimal connection to the previous ones and some are heartwarming and some are downright grim. Overall, the plot is interesting and the MCs development and way of thinking is interesting too! 

Maoujou de Oyasumi

I KNEW this one is gonna be good when I first read the description of the manga in the bookstore 2 years ago xD What you see above is a small princess who wishes nothing more than a good sleep and a bunch of demons who decided to capture her. It becomes clear early on that she isn’t your typical prisoner as she sets out on quests to find stuff to make her rest more comfortable and NOTHING is gonna stand in her way. Your time watching this anime will be filled with heartfelt laughter and love for the all the characters. Yes, some people might be triggered by her actions and personality but I do believe since I (as a person who prefers to watch shonen) am impressed with it, a great number of people will like it.

Munou na Nana

I really love this anime. MC is an antagonist, pretty much an antihero, but she was made to believe that she is the hero. She is very smart, so anything she plots end up interesting. This show always keeps me on the end of my seat. And it’s a great combination of everyone has supernatural abilities + high school setting, but with a darker twist to it. It’s one of my favorites this season! 

Noblesse

I read the webtoon and I am fan of it, so I am really happy to see Noblesse became an anime! Characters are really awesome and plot is action packed. I’m sure you won’t regret watching it! The humor, the lore and the action is very well balanced and it’s just a good story. If you feel like you really like the anime, but something is missing and you have some time, the webtoon is amazing! Of course, they actually did the anime quite well, but some jokes or additional train of thought that goes in the characters head cannot be all transferred into the animation. Oh and - watch Noblesse: Awakening before this! That’s like the crash course of the first arc of the story.

Taiso Samurai 

A MAPPA anime about a japanese gymnast on the verge of retirement, his daughter and a ninja they adopted! That about covers it! It’s a soft and heartwarming story that really leaves a good feeling after watching it. The characters are lovable and the drama side of the story levels out with humor pretty well, without glossing over stuff too much. I can’t say much about the sports aspect since I don’t know much, but it was worth the watch even though it isn’t the most amazing action-packed anime ever. But it was a solid story, good charas and was just soft.

With a Dog AND a Cat, Every Day is Fun

One and a half minute of a lady with a cat and a dog being incredibly relatable.

Yuukoku no Moriarty

Ah yes, I’m a sucker for every possible variation of sherlock homes, so it’s no wonder how much I enjoyed this. It’s centered about Moriarty, but Sherlock has his time in the later half of the show. The animation is just so beautiful, I loved the stories and mysteries and the way they handled Moriarty as a character. Also a good mixture of mystery, people being hideous creatures, main characters being pretty af and humor. I should continue to the manga now.

Most of the time I park, I lock the car, and after I’ve taken a couple of steps, I ask myself: “Ma ho chiuso la macchina?” / “Did I lock the car?”. So, I turn around and lock it again with the keys' remote control even though I've already done it, but I do that anyway to be sure and because maybe I really didn't do it because it happened for real. Now. What would a person with OCD do? Most likely they would do like me, and after getting halfway, they would go back again to close it AGAIN. They would do it a couple of times, and most likely, they would do it a third time after they got home. They would leave the house to go lock the car they've already locked five times.

OCD can begin in adolescence, early adulthood, or even childhood. The onset of obsessive-compulsive disorder is typically gradual, but in some cases, it can begin suddenly. Symptoms vary in severity from time to time and this variation may be related to the occurrence of stressful events. Now. Doesn't all this rings a bell for you? No? Okay, let me explain. I'll copy a piece of my ‘Camren Timeline (Tittle edited)’ post for you: “Camila suffers from one of the variants of OCD since she was 8, and despite seeing a therapist since 2013, her OCD was diagnosed at the end of 2015. So, as I think we all know, The Boy was originally titled Care About Me. Ed Sheeran wrote it and gave it to Mila for her self-titled album Camila. Mila almost completely rewrote it (Ed said 90% of it) and lastly discarded it because it didn't fit well with the rest of the songs on the album, and I totally understand that.

Intro:

“Yeah, he's messed up a couple times

He said what?”

So. The song begins with Mila trying to justify the boy by saying that even though he made mistakes, she's so into him to get past it. I know she used terms like drunk off of him and in love, but she doesn't mean that she's actually in love with him in this case. Just very into him. She's jokingly explaining the situation because she's talking to Ashlee, her friend, and I don't know about you, but my friends and I often use the term in love to make people laugh and to indicate interest in someone.

Like if we see someone for the first time and they're really hot, or if one of the celebrities we like posts like a selfie, we say “I'm in love”. Or, like, another kind of example: one of my best friends has been dating this guy for a few months, and last week he surprised her with some flowers (which he paid very much by the way) and with dinner just because. Hearing her happiness since she has always had only assholes so far, when she finished telling me everything, I made fun of her by laughing and saying: “Lost in love, huh?”. Not because she's actually in love with him, but because it was such a nice thing and she's into him.

So Mila used those phrases to indicate how much she liked him and not because she was actually in love. Also because if she had really been in love with him, she wouldn't have said she didn't care about him for the rest of the song.

Then ‘Ash’ receives the text, and this leads us to understand that the boy is a player and a cheater.

Verse 1:

“Momma said, ‘Always be kind, girl’ (Girl, what's on your mind?)

But I got something I should say (Say it, girl), uh

She was really smart at using this hidden meaning because a lot of people took it for granted that she meant the meaning of changing her mind since we girls have this nomination about often changing our minds about something.

I was with a boy and now with another grandpa one!”.

It's just a different version of the Cinderella song for me: she doesn't need a guy in her life. Don't wrap your head around it too much, dear Anon. There's no deep meaning behind it at all. People should have believed even more that Lauren was a person capable of cheating, and this song served the purpose.

CQL Rewatch - Ep 28

Note: I will be critical of Jiang Cheng in these posts. If you can’t handle that, please feel free to scroll on.

Sorry this write-up is so late. I had a migraine that lasted for a few days, and I didn't want to do anything.

So, we're finally here. The big showdown between Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian--they're finally talking, and Jiang Cheng is letting it all out. He starts off strong, leading with this: "you've pushed me to my limits." So, first of all, it's Wei Wuxian's fault that the other clans are pestering Jiang Cheng, as if this is an intentional act on Wei Wuxian's part to cause Jiang Cheng trouble. Obviously absurd--Wei Wuxian doesn't want to cause the Jiang Clan any more harm than they've already been through. That is the very reason why he took the surviving Wens away to a secluded area that no one else would try and enter.

Next Jiang Cheng pleads with Wei Wuxian to come back to Lotus Pier and turn in all the Wens. Yes, turning them in means they'll all be executed, but at least Wei Wuxian can come back into the fold and, most importantly, Jiang Cheng won't have to deal with him being a black sheep anymore. And what they don't really understand at this point is that if it's not the Wens, it's someone else. Someone always has to take the blame for whatever evil is occurring in the world. If Wei Wuxian were to turn the Wens in, they would undoubtedly be executed, but I don't think for one second that they wouldn't hold Wei Wuxian accountable as well, even if he were the one to turn them in himself. For one thing, they are still convinced he took piece of Yin Iron that Xue Yang had, and they don't trust him when he says (repeatedly) that he did not get it from there. Bottom line, there's always going to be a scapegoat, and we know that--we see it happen again and again in this story.

Last thing about this little scene so far: Defenders of the Wen Clan are going against the mainstream. No one will speak up for them. No one will speak up for Wei Wuxian, in particular. Jiang Cheng is pretty much giving Wei Wuxian an ultimatum: if you don't turn them in, it's over--you're out of the Jiang Clan. No one will take him in at this point, not even the Yunmeng Jiangs. Yes, Jiang Cheng is torn up about this. He wants Wei Wuxian on his side--at his side. He doesn't like the idea that Wei Wuxian's loyalty has switched from himself to these Wen remnants who are as good as dead. But here's the thing: there are still people who will speak up for him. Lan Wangji will. To a certain extent, Jiang Yanli will as well, but no one will really put much stock in what she says. When she and Jiang Cheng visit so that she can show her wedding attire to Wei Wuxian, they keep hidden--they don't want anyone to see them there. Lan Wangji, on the other hand, makes no effort to hide himself. He even calls attention to himself at the tea house when he gets pissed off at all the people gossiping about Wei Wuxian. He's really the only one who is truly on Wei Wuxian's side right now.

Heartbreakingly, Wei Wuxian tells Jiang Cheng to leave. He's the one who supplies the idea that he defected, and proposes that they stage a fight to make it believable. And I can't sit here and fault Jiang Cheng for giving this ultimatum. He's a clan leader--his priority is whatever will better his clan, and right now, Wei Wuxian is a detriment. He tries to convince Wei Wuxian, over and over, to abandon the Wens, but Wei Wuxian can't--he won't. He can't abandon them when they've done so much for him, and he can't abandon them when they've been so wronged. The people he is protecting have done nothing wrong, other than have the wrong surname. Jiang Cheng never really tries to understand that or fight for that. He knows that these people are not dangerous, yet he just goes along with the other clans.

In the end, Jiang Cheng kind of makes it about himself and his inferiority complex with Wei Wuxian. Wei Wuxian wants to be a hero, wants to be the best, he knows the Jiang discipline better than even Jiang Cheng. It's sad that it always comes back to this, despite how many times Wei Wuxian argues with it. Jiang Cheng just cannot get over not being better than Wei Wuxian, and what I find most frustrating is that that issue isn't Wei Wuxian's. It's not Wei Wuxian's problem at all. It is wholly Jiang Cheng's problem, but he behaves as if Wei Wuxian owes him something--as if he ought to do something about it. But there's nothing for him to do. Jiang Cheng just needs to get over his issues and himself.

Can you imagine how shitty Wei Wuxian must feel right now? The person he was raised like a brother to just told him he wouldn't be able to defend him anymore and essentially forced him to defect. He's leading and trying to protect a group of individuals whom the rest of the dominating clans want dead and, by extension, they probably want him dead as well. But despite this, he's doing his best to make everyone else feel better. He puts on a smile, a chipper attitude, and tries to comfort them all. He gives extra fruit to A-Yuan, then he goes to try and cheer Wen Qing up. This is the kind of person he is. And it takes a lot to break him. Think of what he's gone through! Gah!! He's so amazing, I love him!!!! Lan Wangji is my absolute fave, but it did take me a while to warm up to him. I was immediately enchanted with Wei Wuxian, and the more you know about him, the more you love him, I feel.

That fucking comb! Seriously! When will it end! I don't want to see that thing ever again!!! I'm a little irrational about the comb, but it's just really annoying to me, okay? I mean, I feel bad for the guy. He keeps trying and hoping to get a girlfriend, but it's just not happening. Wen Qing probably should have made it clear a long time ago that she had no intention of being his wife, though, and then maybe we could have ditched this subplot a long time ago as well. But the other thing is, if Jiang Cheng cares about Wen Qing so much, why is he so willing to let her be executed? It just...doesn't really make much sense that he can't even admit what his feelings are to even Wei Wuxian.

I love how Wen Qing hasn't said a word in this scene yet. Wei Wuxian is just talking and talking and talking, sort of having a dialogue with her, anticipating what she's thinking. I don't remember being this amused the first time I watched it, but it's quite funny now. Charming, as well. When I get annoyed at what the showrunners tried to do, having Wen Qing and Wei Wuxian be in a romantic relationship, I'm going to think of this scene, and the other moments where I really appreciate their platonic relationship.

Adorable! So adorable, I almost can't stand it! This part is so cute, and I swear, Jin Zixuan has never looked better. There's something about him being disheveled and maybe not having as much makeup on his face, plus the addition of the dirt and mud, that makes him really attractive and cute haha.

"I know this is not Lotus Pier, but I'm willing to build another Lotus Pier for you." Ugly sobbing ensues.

Just Lan Wangji quietly seething with rage over here. Seriously, these gossips! The funny thing is, they're all terrified of what Wei Wuxian will do, yet they sit in here and gossip about him, as if they'd ever be brave enough to stand up to him.

Favorite wangxian scene alert! I love this scene. So much. So so much. Everything from Lan Wangji's panicked expression to the way Wei Wuxian stifles his laughter, to the look on Lan Wangji's face when he hears his name being called (and recognizes whose voice it is) to Wei Wuxian's genuine smile when he and Lan Wangji make eye contact. It's genuine happiness that Wei Wuxian feels--not the forced cheerfulness that he puts on around Wen Qing. He's so glad that someone has come to see him that isn't Jiang Cheng or someone else who wants him dead. It's a friend--finally a friend.

Oh, my gosh--look at him! He's delighted! He's so happy!! When is the last time we've seen our boy actually happy? It feels like it's been forever! And my little wangxian heart soars, knowing that it's Lan Wangji that makes him feel this way. But really, it couldn't be anyone else, could it?

Indulge me. Just look at them.

I have so many feelings about this part, but I can't even talk about it. I just love these scenes of Lan Wangji's visit to Yiling so much. Beginning to end, it's one of my favorite parts of the series. There's such a range of emotions from joy to sadness to bitterness to love--it has everything. And seeing the beginning of their little family warms my heart: A-Yuan warming up to Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian being indignant about it. It's such an emotional time for the both of them, seeing each other for the first time in months, especially after all that has happened between them. If Lan Wangji hadn't come here, maybe they never would have seen each other again. Wei Wuxian certainly can't go to the Cloud Recesses to see him. Ugh, I have a lot of feelings, but that's to be continued, because of a strange episode break (as per usual).

Another kind of shorter post! This episode was just a lot of Jiang Cheng being dramatic about evicting Wei Wuxian, which is entertaining and all, but there’s not a whole lot to say. And then Wen Qing kind of has the exact same conversation with Wei Wuxian, which, again, not a lot to say there either. This episode was just me waiting impatiently for the wangxian part at the end to be quite honest.

What if they're playing us in tomorrow and he's not her husband or is instead her second husband??? I don't trust drama writers anymore. Also this should've been the story like this relationship and romance and angst should've been the main thing or at least gotten more than 2 minutes every episode lmfao. I'm rewatching some dramas and reflecting on some tropes they seem to love and omg for a medium that has lived and survived thanks to romance they sure do love to shit on it constantly, the BS they pulled with 2521 that post that was like a north Korean and south Korean and a goblin and a human etc found a way to be together but a reporter and a fencer couldn't adkfjjfj yikes. Like I'm so so tired of the EP 12 to 15 break up for no other reason than we need people to keep watching until ep 16, it always always undermines the entire relationship we're supposed to believe is true love~~~ I want ROMANCE back, yearning and fighting for each other against all odds and desperate hugs and kisses and longing and just all consuming love and passion I'm tired where are my princess man like dramas where she put a sword to her throat and stayed like that for a day promising to kill herself the moment her father killed her lover, my dramas like queen in hyuns man where they fought time and space and 3 different timelines and she felt his pain with 300 f*cking years between them. It's like they forgot how to write a good love story and all its different complex moving parts. With the world getting shittier and shittier we need these kind of stories now more than ever and yet they seem to be disappearing all together and I thought I only had to worry about western media looking down on romance but it seems like the tide has shifted in Korea too unfortunately.

oof go off anon... honestly it really does feel like it's been a while since we've seen a truly angsty and all sweeping romance. i would count doom at your service as a really good one though, i mean they were both ready to die for the other and found each other over and over again, even when fate didn't want them to. we need more like this.

i don't believe they're duping us tho like i'm pretty sure they've gone too far to turn back now so he has to be her husband?? and yes i would much rather have their story be the main focus of the drama instead of something that's on the back burner all the time, it's like they accidentally create this perfect love story with past lives and red threads and suicide and finding each other again despite all odds then they decide to just have that as a supporting story line. this is a whole drama material, i would watch 16 episodes of this story. everyone watching this is more invested in their romance than the actual drama and it's odd that despite being a main character goo ryeon's story is so sidelined.

i don’t even wanna talk about 2521 cause that was a whole disaster i absolutely hated it like it was actually deeply upsetting and deminished the whole show. you could say ‘well but this show was about friendship and coming of age and etc’ no this was a romance drama about two people falling in love, that was THE MAIN THEME, that was the main story and at the end they went ‘actually nevermind’ and just??? they never heard from each other again?? make it make sense. fucking sick of plot twist and diverting viewer’s expectations and essentially betraying your viewers because this is not what they signed up for. fuck that writer honestly

the dramas you mentioned are both sageuks or fusions that usually tend to be more dramatic and deep but i can't really speak on this genre now as i don't really watch them so idk the situation about those romances.

i don't know if it's the globalization of kdramas but there really seems to be less of these earth shattering romances nowadays. i'm scared to bring up mr queen but if you don't look at the ending, the whole appeal of that show was that these two met through time and space, being from different times, being different sexes and their love story was so beautiful and so fullfilling, it had me glued to the screen for months...when writers realize that romances bring in more viewers i will finally know peace.
