The Ishigamis and The Gifts of Science

Dr. Stone is a love letter to humanity and its sciences. The main character, Senku, often acts averse to all forms of affection, and the only love he doesn't deny is his love for science. But Senku is so so full of love. He just expresses it in a way other than physical touch or words of affirmation. He gives.

But let's go back to the one who taught him so– Byakuya Ishigami, his father. The love of Senku's life.

Byakuya is introduced in the tenth chapter of the manga as a dotting father who sells his car to present Senku with scientific instruments he will need for a more efficient research. This car is Byakuya's means of transportation, and given that he is crying and shaking in this scene, it could not have been easy for him to lose it. But his love for Senku is so big, that he wants to support his son's passion even if it means sacrificing a great convenience for him.

And Senku? Senku truly fell in love with science at this moment.

If there is anything that Senku is, he is Byakuya Ishigami's son through and through. They may seem like two very different people, as Byakuya is an openly affectionate guy while Senku is more closed off with showing his true emotions. But Senku takes more from Byakuya than not, and one of them is by showing his love and/or care for others through giving the gifts of science.

And it starts with Byakuya.

Byakuya had failed his first attempt at being an astronaut ten years back, but he doesn't give up and tries again. Senku then creates a bodysuit that manipulates muscle movement to help Byakuya pass his swimming test. And while the bodysuit doesn't quite help Byakuya to swim, the thought Senku had put into it had motivated Byakuya more than ever to pass the test. This is one of the fundamentals of gifting– sometimes, it really is the thought behind it that matters.

This motivation is what Byakuya credits during his interview with JAXA for passing the tests. He understands that Senku might not have given him any words of encouragement, but this bodysuit was all the words that were needed between them. Senku wants Byakuya to achieve his dreams just as badly. It's the way Senku shows his love for his father.

And it's the way Senku shows his love for others too.

One of the primitive aspects of the Ishigami village is that it considers bad eyesight as a type of "disease". Fuzzy disease, to be exact.

Suika wears a melon mask at all times to help clear her eyesight, which Senku later reveals is due to the pinhole effect. She, however, has never told Senku or the others about having the fuzzy disease. Senku himself notes how odd it is for her to wear a melon around, and confronts her about it once he decides to create glass. This is one of the most beautiful scenes in Dr. Stone, as Suika finds out that her disease was never a disease, and is finally able to see as clearly as the others. Senku basically gives her perfect eyesight, something she didn't even know was possible before.

One of the most beloved people in this village is the priestess, Ruri. Two of Senku's new friends, Kohaku and Chrome are deeply affected by her unknown fatal disease. Senku is such a person who would help a stranger even if there is no benefit to do so (though he would never admit to it), what more a person who his new friends truly love and care about. He cures Ruri of pneumonia, giving her a chance to live a life without the worry of it being her last day every day.

Senku forms an alliance with Gen, who plays the role of Tsukasa's spy, for the promise of a bottle of cola. Both Senku and Gen are aware that the cola is only a front for Gen's loyalty to Senku and the Kingdom of Science, for Gen needs his superficial reputation as a comfort and cannot simply join them if there is no personal benefit for him to do so.

This cola is also the first gift post-petrification that Senku brands himself on, probably because it represents the first gift that is not out of necessity and leans toward a comfort/luxury that they both used to enjoy in the modern world.

For a modern man such as Gen, drinking his favourite soda in the stone world might have been one of the happiest days in his life.

Senku cares about people so much, even if the people in question have tried to kill him. Senku sees Homura as a soldier who is merely following the orders given by her leader, but he also sees the Homura as a lonesome girl sitting by herself on trees day and night.

As usual, Senku hides his kindness and care by showing an evil ulterior motive, such as turning Homura to their side using the cotton candy, but Ruri points out that this is a facade. Similarly to Gen, a person with such an ego is unable to seem as if he is doing something good out of the kindness of his heart.

As winter approaches, the elders in the village are worried about losing people to the cold. Senku hears about this and creates a stove which has a multi-purpose of cooking and also radiating heat for the people to stave off the coldness of winter. And speaking of winter...

[Christmas Acquired!]

Senku hangs up lights in the tree for the "light bulb test" on a random night. Except the date isn't random at all and he drops enough hints for Gen to catch on that it is the night of Christmas. The significance of the day is only appreciated by Gen and himself, as they are the only modern timers in the village. It is for the sake of nostalgia, but Senku would rather be caught dead than admit that he is a sentimental guy with such irrational feelings.

And well, it all comes back to that scene with Byakuya, doesn't it? If you recall, Byakuya calls himself "Santa" while giving the scientific presents to the young Senku. This indicates Senku received them during Christmas. Which means... Christmas is a sentimental day to Senku and his father. An anniversary of Senku receiving his Christmas presents from Byakuya, which led to his deeper dive into his science obsession. The beginning of it all, one would say.

And even though he's dead and buried, Byakuya never stops giving. He gives Senku the Ishigami village to provide Senku with allies. He gives Senku Lillian's music, because he believes in the light of music and understands the importance of media to society. He collects platinum till his last breath, because he believes that Senku will need it someday. Byakuya keeps on giving to Senku, because his love for his son is so huge and unconditional. And because he promised.

Surely, there is no greater love in the manga than Byakuya's love for his son and Senku's love for his father. Byakuya could easily win ten billion best father awards... well, not like there's much competition for that in shounen mangas.

museums! a lot have online collections to look at: the met is my go to a lot of the time, and the worcester art museum has the higgins armory collection currently. movies, shows, comics, if they have a costume aesthetic I really enjoy. dover publication has a couple of books collecting medieval fashion over the centuries I like to flip through.

nc wyeth's medieval illustrations, arthur rackham, and john william waterhouse too. medieval tapestries and manuscripts. 13th-16th italian fashion & art. lately I've been playing more with 4th-~11th century roman/byzantine influences! renfaire/medieval reeactment photos are a great visual resource too.

everything we know about host!vic’s childhood

(a sisyphean attempt to figure out what the fuck their backstory is)

will this make complete sense? no! absolutely not! and it’ll probably change in two weeks time! but i have thoughts and i am announcing them via megaphone

also for ease i’m referring to them as ‘the host’ rather than ‘host!vic’ for the remainder of this post

the host’s birth family

we know the host was at one point raised by both their parents. were they together? god knows. at some point, their father abandons them/the family and moves to miami, leaving the host and their twin sister katie behind. it’s likely this happens when the host is 7 or younger, as they spend a large amount of time with their grandfather and nana from that age onwards.

when the host is 12, they’re still living with their mother and katie, who doesn’t come to their birthday party, implying that at this time either their father hasn’t left yet or, my belief, that their grandfather and nana are taking partial custody of the twins (well, it’s probably more that their mother is kinda just leaving them there for days at a time)

on the topic of the grandparents: we know the host had a grandfather (bill) who was married to their biological grandmother, who died before the host was born. bill then marries nana. the host also mentions their grandmother on their other side, who apparently takes a lot of cruises.

based on all of this, i believe bill & nana are the host’s maternal grandparents, and their unnamed grandmother is their paternal grandmother. this would suggest that they still had some contact with their father’s side of the family after he abandoned them, although considering she’s always on a cruise she may be avoiding the host and/or their family.

at some point after the host’s 12th birthday, their mother abandons(?) them and katie, and the two live with bill and nana for an undetermined amount of time. somewhat soon after this - when the twins are still young enough not to be safe home alone for too long - nana abandons them for four days, leading to bill divorcing her.

after this… we don’t know a ton. katie and the host grow apart, and as katie mentions their father abandoning them but not their mother it’s likely that she reconnected with their mother at some point. at some point so does the host, although they clearly still have a very strained relationship with their mother considering she refused to come to their birthday.

at some point, bill dies and his entire inheritance goes to nana. this isn’t super important to the timeline but depending on when this happens, it might explain their obsession with money as a power symbol. also the hayes steele thing. in my mind those two are connected but that’s up for interpretation.

as the host is apparently set to be the sole person organising nana’s funeral, it’s likely this was true for bill’s as well. we don’t know how old they were when bill died, but given katie’s absence from the funeral planning it could be assumed that she’s living with their mother at this point while the host is/was living with bill?

so, in summary, my best attempt to figure out the timeline is as follows: the host’s parents split up when the host and katie are around 7, and the two are left in the care of their mother, who regularly leaves them with their grandfather and nana. the host and katie grow apart, and around the age of 12 their mother leaves for a long period. during this time, nana leaves the two home alone for four days, leading to her divorce from the twins’ grandfather. their mother returns, and katie goes to live with her, while the host stays with their grandfather (who may be the only healthy adult in this whole family).

bonus thoughts:

if you subscribe to the idea that the host and the bianca were childhood friends (which i do), they presumably met after the host’s 12th birthday considering she didn’t attend it. this… doesn’t really make the david situation any less fucked up

it’s obvious katie was the golden child, and based on her having been a popular girl and the ‘nerd alert’ thing from nana it’s pretty easy to guess that nana encouraged the two fighting/katie bullying the host (something that their father also seemed to encourage, if we take the sippy cup story from augbert as fact)

Bruce's Uncle Phillip was an eccentric sort of man, a rich man who hated the big city lifestyle and wanted to get away from it all. So shortly after adopting Bruce, the three person family unit temporarily moved to Smallville, Kansas. To get away from it all and escape the trauma of Gotham. It was here that Bruce Wayne first met Clark Kent, Lana Lang, Lex Luthor and some others.

For a few months, Bruce stayed in Smallville. Him and Clark became good friends. For a brief time, Bruce even ended up Superboy's sidekick as the Flying Fox. Bruce never learned Clark was Superboy, and Clark never learned Bruce was the Flying Fox. They couldn't learn each other's secrets, because Bruce moved away from Smallville a few months after he invented the Flying Fox identity. Uncle Phillip was bored of small town life, so he chose to move the family back to Blüdhaven. He grew homesick, and he realized that small town living just wasn't something he could make work. So Bruce lost a friend in Clark Kent. Although they would eventually reconnect. One day…

In any case, Bruce moved back to Blüdhaven. Blüdhaven ends up being where Bruce spends most of his childhood. It's here that he decides to become Batman, and here that he learns Mrs. Chilton's son was the person who killed his parents (although he still managed to forgive her). Blüdhaven was where Bruce began dedicating himself to the ideals that would go on to define his future life. And on the whole, it was home to a relatively peaceful childhood for him. He still keeps in touch with Uncle Phillip and Mrs. Chilton to this day. Just because they're family to him. So his childhood after Smallville was fairly unremarkable, at least until he turned 17 or 18.

When he turned 17 or 18, Bruce moved away from Blüdhaven to go to Gotham University. Bruce began studying to be a law enforcement officer there. His professors taught him everything he needed to know about forensic science, non lethal combat training, and all the other fine arts of criminology. At Gotham U, Bruce also met two new friends (who helped fill the void in his heart since leaving Smallville years ago): Harvey Dent and Ethan Bennett. Ethan was also studying to be a Detective, and Harvey was training to be a lawyer. Together, these three became best friends, infamous on campus for their academic achievements.

Shortly after graduating from university, though, Bruce took on the identity of the Batman. He became a nightly presence in Gotham City, a vigilante either helping the cops or making them look ineffective, depending on who you asked. But either way: Batman had arrived in Gotham. And he has here to stay. Fighting against Falcone and the other mobs in Gotham, Batman had inadvertently drawn the ire of the Court of Owls (led by Carmine Falcone). But that's a story that won't be resolved for a little while yet. For now, we leave the story of Bruce Wayne here. In the next part of his life's story, we meet Robin I (Dick Grayson), and Alfred re-enters the fold.

There are three main characters, Su Moting (a cringefail loser girl human whose parents are a god and a monster), Xing/Star Tianji (a malewife god who is Su Moting's phone), and Xing Dikui (a catboy monster who is Su Moting's cat)

There also a lot more characters. Su Moting's brother (he's actually a half-god half-monster thing) shows up a bit. There's an air conditioner named Airy. There's a cockroach and he has like a gang and also he tried to marry Su Moting. There's Wang Xiaobao who is Su Moting's childhood friend who also likes her and is trying to get her to fall for him. He's super totally hot. Su Moting kinda like hates him though idk. Oh and then there's the food god.

Also there's an alternate of them where they're not the dumbest people alive.
