remembering why varric takes anders betrayal so personally you can *hear* the change in his character in the party banter and varric keeps trying to joke and be normal with him. he never saw the changes and it really like solidifies why he’s so resolute in saving solas it’s like a second chance of sorts

Porter with baby fever is my truth. But so is Porter introducing his child from his previous marriage to Jace.

In my heart of hearts Jace doesn’t want kids of his own but he LOVES the idea of being a hot stepmom that lounges around and drinks wine all day, picking Porter’s daughter up with his big sunglasses on fighting for life not to let the hangover take him. Him and Porter’s daughter tease Porter constantly. Porter knows that when he and Jace have his daughter over that it’ll always be 2 against 1. They both get anything that want and Porter pretend he doesn’t like it but he loves seeing them so close. He always knew Jace was good with kids, he saw it in him at work. But letting someone meet his kid is a big step that Porter doesn’t take lightly.

When he first told Jace about his daughter he fully prepared for it to be a deal breaker but when Jace said he was fine with it and that he’d love to meet her Porter cried. His family is his world and now it’s a little bit bigger with his daughter and Jace meeting.

Books of 2025: ODD THOMAS by Dean Koontz.

This was a reread for me! I remembered it being An Inspiration for one of my own novels (which I'm revising now, which is why I am Returning To My Inspiration Roots), but hooo boy did I forget Exactly How Influential it was. The syntax, the tone, specific images ("apocalyptic crimson," neon and sixth sense, aimless wandering for a guiding Feeling about bad things, hello????)--Odd Thomas is 100% Driscoll's precursor, and I think they'd be friends!

Odd is a fantastic fry-cook who can also see dead people (they don't speak)(he doesn't know why)(he helps them when he can) and strange shadow creatures that portend horrible violence. He gets premonitions and weird feelings, and he uses those to try to stop a massacre that's been haunting his dreams for years. (The Goodreads blurb is better; I'm not sure how to distill this sanely, but I love it so much--it's weird, it's fucked up, it's funny, it's sweet, it's unhinged.)

Overall, this held up well! There was more fatphobia than I remembered (published in 2003 whomst??), but I do still really love Odd, and it hurt A Lot to know what was coming--couple instances of neat foreshadowing that I didn't pick up on my first read, and I was still delighted by many of the phrasings and humor. Still an all-time fave series for me, and I'm glad I revisited it!

On the Goddess of Shadows;;

While Hylia exists as the bright and blinding phoenix of light, there exists Sheik as the teneberous raven of shadow. She is the patron goddess of the Sheikah, and revered as the Goddess of Death, Shadows and Illusions.

Sheik was not originally divinity. She was one of Demise's underlings. A demon born of Demise's own draconic scales in the time before corruption took the Lord of Shadows and felled him. It was said that Sheik was the one who told Sheik and assisted with Demise's initial sealing after she became aware of Demise's traitorous intentions. Together the two sealed the corrupt god and his minions deep within the earth before the written records of men.

For her aid, Sheik was granted divinity to restore the balance between light and shadow. She and the people that remained were said to have an unusually close relationship with the Goddess of Light. Sheik was never more loyal to anyone than Hylia.

Despite her intense loyalty and affection to Hylia, the Goddess of Death is not known as a particularly kind Goddess, nor is she particularly cruel. The Sheikah are not known to pray to Sheik. She is simply a force that is. However, their reverence for the Goddess of Shadows informs some of the Sheikah's unique views on death and dying.

After Hylia shed her divinity, Sheik retreated to the depths of her realm where she quietly rules from the land of the dead. Grief having caused her mind to slip, but still bound by an oath she swore to the Goddess more than ten millenia ago she dutifully performs her duties and guards the gates of hell. It is customary when Sheikah come of age to journey down through the shadow temple to receive their oath from the Matron of Shadows. This oath allows them greater ability to manipulate shadows and illusions, and for some reanimate the dead. Her powers came at a price which was an oath to the Royal Family of Hyrule. One that was almost impossible to break without the use of dark magics.
