i saw someone say gary / goh should be called splitdecisionshipping and woah. they are absolutely right. 

it’s not just a reference to jn113, THE shigegou episode ever, where they finally put aside their differentiating opinions and styles so they can work as a team and catch regieleki and regidrago.

but it’s also a ref to their different selves in the first place. they’re rivals because they couldn’t come up with a compromise, or, in goh’s case, didn’t want to. he did basically anything to not be on gary’s side, and only realized that after articuno defeated them because of his poor judgement.

I maintain that Lan Wangji’s survival of the whipping was due to his own tenaciousness and that his potential death was an accepted outcome for his clan (wwx says the amount of them is “akin to death,” taming wangxian wording). But I’m also starting to believe, based on these quotes and Wei Wuxian’s horror, that this really was meant to be only a humiliating punishment in order to force Lan Wangji into repenting, something he refused to do. I wonder if they had initially planned to whip him until he repented, expecting that he’d break after a few strikes, but he stood firm and they were forced to end it at 33 before they killed him. Or if he was always going to get the 33, even at the almost guarantee of death.

A couple of lashes from the discipline whip was already considered a severe punishment, and sufficient to ensure that the bearer of the punishment would remember his lesson for life. However, this man had at least thirty scars on his back. What heinous crime did this man commit to suffer a punishment as serious as this? If he had done something this unforgivable, why didn’t they just kill him?

Usually, the one being punished was only lashed once or twice. The whip already taught a very harsh lesson, more than enough to engrave the episode into wrongdoer’s memory for their entire life. They would never dare make such a mistake again. Yet, by a conservative estimate, this person’s back had at least thirty whip scars. What kind of sin could he have committed to be beaten so badly? If it had really been so disgraceful, why hadn’t they just killed him?

Usually, with only one or two strikes of the discipline whip, it would already be enough of a punishment for the bearer to remember it for their whole life, never to make the same mistake ever again. The amount of scars on this person’s back accumulated thirty at the least. Just what sort of monstrous crime did he commit for him to be whipped so many times? If it really was a monstrous crime, why didn’t they kill him?
