They might switch from aggressive spiking to complex, improvisational passing at any given moment. The Wild Dogs' game is about trust in their teammates' instincts. Their players rely heavily on quick reflexes, often making split-second decisions that leave their opponents scrambling. RvB tarot cards

I have once again cooked up a hypothetical tarot deck for a show I enjoy. I didn't make any art because I refuse to attempt Halo armor, but here's my pitch for which RvB character I'd assign to each of the major arcana.

0-The Fool: Franklin Delano Donut. The fool symbolizes new beginnings, and someone who is so excited to be on an adventure that they stop paying attention to the dangers around them. Donut is of course known for his vibrant enthusiasm, but he may not be the most mindful person. Despite all the dangers and near death experiences he's faces though, this plucky private just keeps on being fabulous.

1-The Magician: Frank "Doc" Dufrense. The magician is a powerful character because he stands outside the limits of the four suits, much like Doc's place beyond the constructed binary of Red vs Blue. He doesn't belong wholly to any group (and his mind doesn't even belong wholly to himself), but that won't stop him from showing up every day to make people more comfortable while they die. He is an outsider who comes to help others; it's just a question of whether he can live up to his own good intentions.

2-The High Priestess: Agent North Dakota. As an almost parental figure, the high priestess is often sought for advice and encourages cooler heads to prevail. North's place amongst the Freelancers was often defined by his role as a peacekeeper, serving as an advocate for calm and reasoned thinking in the face of bizarre circumstances. It's because of this logic and empathy that he was able to recognize Freelancer's corruption and ultimately defect from the project.

3- The Empress: Agent New York. The empress is a leader not through force but through nurturing. This suits York, who was consistently one of the highest ranked and best beloved Freelancers, in large part due to his amiable personality and willingness to listen to others. He often acted as a more passive or supportive member of the group, but his defection from the program proved that he was still an independent thinker and a leader in his own right.

4- The Emperor: Agent Carolina. In contrast to their counterpart, the emperor is the leader who maintains control through strict discipline. Carolina was the head of her squad in Project Freelancer due to her raw strength and combat ability, but she often allowed this reliance on rules and structure to go too far. She not only allowed the ranking system to control her life, but she expected her place as #1 to allow her to control the lives of others. After her time with the Reds and Blues she allowed herself to loosen up a bit, but she still maintained her domineering personality and commitment to victory.

5- The Hierophant: Col. Sarge. The hierophant is another leadership card, this one coming from a person who is entrenched in a place of authority and perhaps a bit too reliant on rules and history. Sarge is certainly a creative leader in many ways, but he also depends upon the army as the arbitrator of right and wrong; focusing heavily on receiving orders and passing them on to his subordinates. Sarge isn't completely unchangeable though, and we see in season eight onwards the sort of wild maneuvers he'll cook up on his own time.

6- The Lovers: Lopez and Sheila. This card is fairly self explanatory, I think. Two people in love! It just so happens that in this case, the happiest and most functional relationship is between a robot soldier and the enemy tank.

7- The Chariot: Agent South Dakota. The chariot is all about go-go-go. It's a card of action and movement, much like South's fiery and passionate personality. Though her impulsivity often got her benched, the limitations placed on her by the Director only added to her frustration and prevented her from getting any of that energy out in a healthy way. After Project Freelancer her main mission was always to keep moving and keep finding something new, no matter what destruction she had to leave behind.

8- Strength: Michael J. Caboose. While Caboose is of course strong in a physical sense, that's not exactly the meaning of the strength tarot card. Strength is the lion, but it's also the young woman who fearlessly scratches the lion's ears. Caboose can lift a tank, but his real power comes from the strength of his friendships and his willingness to trust anyone who comes his way. This endless optimism and determination to keep seeing the bright side of everything (even a killer robot) is what led the Reds and Blues out of many tough scrapes.

9- The Hermit: Dick Simmons. The hermit is a guy by himself, plain and simple. While Simmons craves the company of others, he often finds it easier to keep himself isolated than to deal with the complexities of humanity. If the Reds don't respect him he'll simply join the Blues and take over an empty base. He's smart, yes, but he sees his own powers as ultimate and doesn't want to be on the team if he isn't seen as essential.

10- The Wheel of Fortune: Agent Florida. As a symbol of fate and destiny, the wheel of fortune is suited to a character like Florida who may appear chaotic but ultimately pulls the strings of Blood Gulch. His personality can be a bit unpredictable at times, but Flowers is still completely in control. It's just a question of whether you've figured out his plan yet.

11- Justice: Agent Connecticut. While all the members of Project Freelancer were supposedly fighting for peace, CT is the only one who took it upon herself to keep their agency in check. The others followed of course, but she was the first whistleblower to really challenge Freelancer and uncover the twisted secrets of their organization, and she was more than willing to sacrifice her life if it meant getting that information to the right people. Though it didn't come to pass until after his death, CT was still the one who brought Project Freelancer to justice.

12- The Hanged Man: Lavernius Tucker. While the hanged man isn't exactly a cheery sounding card, what it's really about is looking at difficult situations from a creative perspective. Tucker was constantly tied up in the schemes of others (The Director, the Sangheli, Felix), but he always maintained his distinctive attitude and determination. While he would have preferred to stay the same guy he was in Blood Gulch, he proved again and again that he was more than able to adapt and evolve; thriving in lethal conflicts and becoming a hero unlike any other.

13- Death: The Meta. The Meta, like death, is not cruel or sadistic. It is simply coming for you, and you will not escape. Looking deeper though, the death card in tarot symbolizes the end to old systems and the transition to something new. The Meta was once Agent Maine, until is underwent a transformation more horrible than simply dying. It went through a metamorphosis, and in the process brought about the end of Project Freelancer and the beginning of a new era.

14- Temperance: Locus. This card is one that symbolizes balance more than anything else. As a man desperate to become a machine, Locus tried to maintain perfect control over himself. He wanted to appear solid and unshakeable, up until the bedrock of his partnership with Felix was shattered. After he turned on his partner, Locus struggled to maintain a different kind of balance; between the man he was and the man he wants to be.

15- The Devil: Felix. Well this one is pretty simple. The devil as a card is about evil, yes; but it's also about control and creativity. Felix found joy in his ability to wrap the people of the New Republic around his finger, and he thrived in command of an army of space pirates. More than that though, he had fun with it. He always came up with innovative ways to destroy his enemies or intimidate his allies, and he was completely free of guilt the entire time.

16- The Tower: The Director. While death and the devil sound scary on the surface, the tower is really the most powerfully negative card in the deck. Much like Dr. Church, the tower brings misery and despair to everyone associated with it. More specifically, the screaming people falling from a lightning struck tower symbolizes divine retribution for humans who saw themselves as gods. The Director spent his later years trying to build a program that could win a war and bring back his lost love, and his favorite tool was manipulation. He always wanted nothing more than to establish his own power and prove that he could maintain complete control over the world and people around him, but it was only a matter of time before his ship crashed into Sidewinder and his bitter children found his hiding place.

17- The Star: Dexter Grif. The star is another symbol of balance, though this one is more about fairness and hope. Grif is someone who may act discontented but clearly cares deeply about the people around him, and his unshakeable demeanor holds the Reds together (as much as Sarge would hate to admit it). While he doesn't literally nourish the land and water like the star, he stays calm amidst a team of fiery tempers and is able to keep the warthog running if they ever need a getaway vehicle.

18- The Moon: Agent Washington. The moon is all about changes and illusions, perfect for someone like Wash who spent so much time blending into different personas. While Wash, like the moon, can appear dark and mysterious; he's ultimately a force for positive change amongst the Reds and Blues, who in turn inspire him to change into the best version of himself.

19- The Sun: Kaikaina Grif. Simple joy, that's what the sun is all about. In a canyon full of shitty people and a show full of angst, Kai is one of the only characters who's just here to have a good time. As crazy as things get for her brother and his friends, she'll always be waiting back at Blue Base with enough music and glowsticks to keep the party going.

20- Judgement: Agent Texas. Much like the angel on this card descends to judge mankind, Tex was dragged from the afterlife to separate the worthy from the corrupt. While she was created as a sort of toy in the Director's grief, she quickly established her own sense of identity and justice. She saw the truth of Project Freelancer and made it her mission to destroy it, doing her best to free the Alpha. In Blood Gulch and beyond she acted as a sort of avenging angel for the Blues, swooping in to save their asses and punish whoever she deemed to be worthy of punishment. In the end they all learned something from Tex and her fierce determination. Church became his own protector, and he could finally let Allison rest.

21- The World: The AI fragments. The world is a card of ultimate completion. Much like the many fragments who came from a more powerful AI, many symbols surround the vast and vibrant landscape of this card. Delta, Theta, Gamma, Omega, Beta, Sigma, Eta, Iota, Epsilon, and Alpha are all characters in their own right; but they're also pieces of a whole. They were never able to reunite fully in Red vs Blue, but they live on in the memories of Epsilon and all of us who return to the show year after year.

“Shixiong,” Quan Yizhen pleads, lying on the floor flat on his back, “when are we going to get started?”

“What?” Yin Yu replies vaguely, sitting cross-legged beside him, counting a handful of small metal pieces. “We have started.”

“But we’re not putting anything together.”

Watery Ghost City daylight pours through the windows of Yin Yu’s training room, illuminating various wooden panels, boards, posts, and pegs strewn across the floor. Quan Yizhen gazes at them with a nameless sense of dread.

“I want to make sure we have everything first,” Yin Yu says, glancing again at the scroll by his knee. “I don’t want to be halfway through and find we can’t continue.”

“Okay,” Quan Yizhen mumbles, feeling glum. “That makes sense.”

Yin Yu throws him a glance. “Here,” he says, voice soft, nodding at a pile of posts, “if you’re bored, put those parts in size order.”

Quan Yizhen feels energy and enthusiasm he didn’t even know he had left draining from his body. “Why?” he moans.

His shixiong’s answer is surprisingly calm. “So that when we need something we’re not scrambling around looking for it. His Highness asked us to do this,” he adds, setting another few parts aside. “I don’t want to mess it up.”

Quan Yizhen lets out a sigh through his nose.

Then Yin Yu leans over and presses a light kiss to his lips. “Thank you,” he says.

Brightening, Quan Yizhen sits up and begins sorting.

The assorted pieces of wood are beginning to resemble the frame of a long, low box.

“Wait,” Yin Yu says, looking again at the stained, torn directions. “…Hold on.” He examines the panel they’re preparing to put in place. “There should be two holes on this end.”

Quan Yizhen, kneeling on the other side of the frame, peers at his edge of the panel. “There’s two on this end,” he observes helpfully.

Yin Yu’s face goes blank for a moment. “Oh no,” he breathes, “did we put this piece together backwards?” There’s a note of exasperation in his voice.

“We could just drill another hole here,” Quan Yizhen suggests, moving from one side of the box to the other, comparing.

An expression like he’s considering the option briefly crosses Yin Yu’s face, but then he quickly grows reluctant. “No, we should do this properly.” He sighs with regret. “We’ll have to undo the last few steps.”

Quan Yizhen feels his heart sink. He respects Yin Yu’s willingness to do things the right way, but sometimes it makes the process so hard to stick with and it often seems unnecessary. But he trusts his shixiong’s judgment (even when Yin Yu occasionally doubts it himself). So he reaches for the pliers.

As the wood splits around the fastener, Quan Yizhen lets out a sound of frustration. He didn’t think he’d used that much force.

“It’s all right,” Yin Yu soothes, “don’t worry. We can use some wood filler later. This thing is so old and the wood’s dry. Who knows where His Highness found it.”

Quan Yizhen notices the annoyance in Yin Yu’s voice, in the little crease near his eyebrow, that he’s trying to redirect for his sake. He gives his shixiong a grateful look.

Yin Yu smiles at him and the little crease disappears. “Do you want to take a break?” he asks softly.

“No, let’s get this over with.” He basks in the sympathetic look Yin Yu offers him. “Besides,” he adds, feeling bolder, “His Highness is waiting for us to finish it.” The look of pride feels even better.

“Can you hold these two pieces so I can fit this fastener in?”

Quan Yizhen holds the pieces steady, leaning extra close to watch Yin Yu work the pieces together with intense concentration.

Feeling the weight of such scrutiny Yin Yu pauses and glances up to see dark eyes focused on him. He lets out a breathy laugh and rubs the tip of his nose against Quan Yizhen’s then returns to his task, smiling.

The cabinet is finally finished! It sits a little unsteadily and the doors don’t line up perfectly, but Xie Lian is grateful and happy to offer it to a new ghost resident who is getting their start.

“I’m sorry again for the directions being damaged,” he says, “but it looks like you managed to figure it out.”

“It was no trouble, Your Highness,” Yin Yu replies.

“It was some trouble,” Quan Yizhen amends and hears Yin Yu’s soft, stifled laugh.

Xie Lian smiles. “It’s good that it wasn’t missing any parts then! Thank you again for doing this, you two. You’ve both been so busy lately.”

“It was nice to slow down and work on something different,” Yin Yu says, taking Quan Yizhen’s hand and squeezing it.

Xie Lian’s smile widens playfully. “I’m glad to have found you a chance to spend some time together.” And he leaves them both wondering if this was the only reason he gave them the task in the first place.

Not so long ago, the UK government could brag about its climate credentials. In 2019, Prime Minister Theresa May pledged the country to reach net zero by 2050—the first major economy to legally commit to eradicating its emissions. The UK’s early embrace of renewables also saw it cut emissions more quickly and rapidly than other major economies, and it has now slashed its emissions in half compared with 1990 levels.

But as of late, the UK’s bragging rights are looking shaky. Under current prime minister Rishi Sunak, the government has signaled a willingness to roll back green pledges and drag climate policy into the culture wars. In its latest report to Parliament, the Climate Change Committee, which advises the government on climate policy, warned that the UK was in danger of losing its position as a climate leader.

For six years, Chris Stark has been CEO of the Climate Change Committee and the UK’s top adviser on climate change. As he steps down from the role, he spoke to WIRED about the UK’s shift away from climate leadership, his fears about the polarization around climate change, and the role he thinks oil and gas companies might play in a net zero future.

The interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Matt Reynolds: In the six years you’ve been CEO of the Climate Change Committee, the UK has had four different prime ministers. How much does the person in charge matter when it comes to climate change policy?

Chris Stark: It’s massively important, though it’s often not the explicit leadership that matters. To tackle climate change we’ve got to have something that spreads right across all the arms of the government. If you know that the person at the top of government wants that policy to be focused on climate, everything just gets a bit easier. I imagine this as a set of strings held by the person at the top. It’s much easier if they’re pulling them up.

So if you’re working on housing policy and there’s something at the margins about whether you do something that helps emissions, or you do something that helps one of the other priorities, then knowing that the boss wants progress on climate really matters.

Has government enthusiasm for bold climate policy waned since your early days in the job?

Over my six years I think we’ve made a huge amount of progress, but I feel we’ve lost the excitement at the top to do good climate policy. In the first half of my time with the CCC we were producing, I think, really interesting insights on what a net zero future looks like, which were easily swallowed by a government that was interested in carving a more positive future.

Today it’s much more of a culture war, and net zero is presented—including by the prime minister—as a cost more than an opportunity. All the things we said before are still true, even more so than six years ago, but we find ourselves having to make the same arguments with one hand tied behind our back.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine feels like a really pivotal moment in this narrative. In the autumn of 2022, energy prices in the UK were skyrocketing, and yet the response of Liz Truss, prime minister at the time, was to double down on oil and gas exploration and refuse to ask people to cut down their energy usage. It was the absolute opposite approach to many European nations facing the same problem.

At the time [the invasion] happened, it was obviously a genuine crisis and I thought climate was going to come down the priority list. But in my technocratic mind, I was also thinking this was going to create the incentive to get off high-carbon fuels—if you want to know what the world looks like with a high carbon price, we’re about to find out.

What I didn’t expect is that the green arguments were too late out of the blocks because the fossil arguments stepped in immediately to say, “This is why we need a domestic fossil fuel supply.” That really important argument, to act on this because fossil fuels are so price-volatile and so expensive, was slightly missed in the political ether at the time, and we jumped to a different narrative of what the country needed to do.

The irony of that whole period is we’re running out of oil and gas. So it’s not going to be a credible strategy in the long run to try and pump prime oil and gas licenses in the North Sea.

A year later, Truss’ successor, Rishi Sunak, made a big speech rolling back key climate policies, most notably pushing back the 2030 deadline banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars.

If you look at it purely as a policy speech, there was more pro-climate policy than there was delayed climate policy. It was the one where he talks about accelerating green investment, for example. And the electric vehicle thing [pushing back the 2030 deadline] wasn’t that much of a shift, since we were already allowing hybrids until 2035.

But what did the country hear? They heard, “Don’t worry, now’s not the time to switch to electric vehicles.” It’s hard to tie anything back to a single speech, but if you look at the share of electric vehicles being sold in the UK, it has flatlined since September. I’m sure there are other factors here, but there will be people who thought, “Oh well, maybe I don’t need to get that electric car right now.”

It seems that this government has decided to make appealing to motorists a key campaigning strategy. In July 2023, the Labour Party narrowly lost the Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election, and a lot of commentators thought that the Conservative candidate won that election because of his opposition to the Ultra Low Emission Zone.

What happened there was interesting. The Labour Party also accepted the narrative that ULEZ was why they didn’t win that constituency. Inevitably, in any election there are a host of issues at play, but if all parties think it’s about environmental policies, it’s no surprise that that becomes one of the dominant themes in politics after that.

My regret is that we’ve allowed that to color the whole of climate policymaking and politics, but it’s important to make that distinction between politics and policy because the government is still producing lots and lots of climate policies, but now it’s quite unsure how to pitch them.

Electric vehicles are a good example of an area where the UK could have moved really early and made itself a real hub for this technology. Instead, we have a situation where China is really dominating that market and reaping a lot of the benefits of that green transition.

You go right back to the Beijing Olympics—right back at that point, they were already planning as an autocratic state for a full supply chain of electric vehicles, and they weren’t interested in fossil fuels, it was solely about electric vehicles. They could see the trajectory for cost falls in batteries, see the opportunity for being the dominant player in that market, and see that the production line itself is cheaper for an electric vehicle.

We could have done that in the West. Instead we had a whole King Canute-style strategy of holding back from electric vehicles, and we’re about to see the first wave of much, much cheaper electric vehicles from China. It’s going to be difficult to hold that back, so you’ve got a real challenge now.

You don’t need to be an autocratic state to be successful in this transition. I wish we were better at accepting that technology falls down that cost curve.

In February the government announced that the UK is the first major economy to have halved its emissions, compared with 1990 levels. The transition really has been huge, but the CCC has shown that the vast majority of that reduction has come from decarbonizing the power sector. Progress on transport, buildings, industry, and so on has been much slower.

This is the source of some tension between us and the government. I think it’s remarkable what we’ve pulled off with the power sector in this country. It is genuine emissions reduction, there’s been a hell of a lot of big policy to allow that to happen, and a whole energy sector that’s been dragged along with that.

However, while I understand the government’s desire to give retrospective arguments for this, it doesn’t matter in terms of climate. What climate cares about is what you do next, and that’s where I’ve seen the biggest gap. I’m interested now in the set of other stories that go alongside the power system.

We’ve got to change our transport system, change the way industrial production takes place; we’ve got to do things in farming, and heat homes differently. These are the next set of stories and we’re slow on them.

We are not really reducing emissions outside of the power sector at the same rate as inside it. We have to see a very significant increase in decarbonization outside the power sector if we want to hit the goals we’ve set for 2030 and beyond.

One area the UK has been trying to get ahead is with capturing carbon and storing it in the North Sea, the same place where companies are currently drilling for oil and gas.

It’s a controversial thing for us, because obviously I’d prefer that we didn’t continue to use fossil fuels.

But the role of carbon capture is really important in achieving net zero. It helps you reduce emissions on the journey to net zero, and if you’ve got the facility to capture carbon and store it, it also opens this brand-new industry of greenhouse gas removals, which I think the world will need on its journey to tackling climate change.

Without carbon capture and storage it is a very difficult journey to net zero, if not impossible. Without it, it is a very difficult journey. And the key thing is that it’s not an alternative to decarbonizing.

The UK government has awarded 21 carbon storage licenses, most of them going to the oil and gas industry. It’s jarring that the same companies that dug carbon out of the ground, sparking off this whole crisis, stand to benefit by putting that carbon back under the sea.

It jars with me as well, but I also care about pace and tech and ability. You will not find the ability to do this outside of the oil and gas sector. If you want to try and exclude the oil and gas sector from this then you will fail on this.

We cannot be too binary about who we deal with. It is a transition. Oil and gas do have a role, whether we like it or not, over the next 30 years. I’d far rather have an oil and gas sector that is properly invested in technologies that will help the transition to net zero. If we make them pariahs then they’ll stick to their knitting, as we’ve seen in Scotland.

In an interview with the BBC you said that climate campaigners have been unhelpful in the discussion around climate change. I’m sure a lot of people will be disappointed to hear that from the UK’s leading climate adviser.

Yeah, I’m sure they’d be disappointed. I have no issue with campaigners themselves. My observation is more about the impact that campaigning has had and how that’s changed over the time I’ve done this job.

I would contrast the early part of my job—as we were gearing up to do the early work on net zero, where there was just a positive campaign to act on climate change that made it quite easy for us to do the analysis and present that to a government that was ready for it—with the recent discussion, which I think has been more polarized by some of the more extreme activism.

I’m not judging at all. I understand entirely why activists feel as strongly as they do about climate change. I also feel that strongly. But I do think the politics has soured partly because of what the activist groups have done recently. I don’t know whether that’s right or wrong, except to say that I think it’s objectively what we’re seeing in British politics at the moment.

When you say activism, are you thinking about Just Stop Oil, blocking motorways, and so on?

I don’t think it’s just Just Stop Oil, but yeah, those more radical protests. It’s an easy target now for the populist voices to say, “This is what happens if we try and tackle climate change.”

I know there are activists that are keen to return to that more positive framing. My own view is that the more we keep the arguments for climate change positive, the better that progress will be.

Right, but I suppose another way to look at it is that without those climate activists, it gives others the license to ease off on the transition because there isn’t that pressure.

It may well be right. But my point is that I don’t think we need to dial up the risk now. I think people see it. Climate change is definitely with us and people are worried about it—in a sense, the climate is doing that job for us.

The despair comes in when you are worried about climate change, you’re seeing it playing out, and you’re not seeing a response from industry. My worry is that’s where we’ll end up.

You’re right that the positive framing needs to be complemented by a genuine sense of the risks, but I tend to think that people already see that. Not everyone wakes up like I do and thinks about climate change, but everyone is touched by it now. I don’t have any trouble making the arguments that climate change is happening now—that feels like a shift over the past six years.
