im curious as to about how long each of your pieces takes?? it took me two class periods to be satisfied with the pinch pot we just made in ceramics class (though that’s probably also because im very much a perfectionist) so i can’t imagine how long a whole critter would take

it really depends!! some of them (unpainted, simple shapes) take as little as five minutes; some of them (large, complex shapes with very detailed painting) take as much as 10 hours.

I have gotten way faster over the years, though, so don't think I'm just some natural genius! the skills of sculpting build on each other. Just last year it took me three hours to make a simple fox, and now I can bust out a really nice fox (with toe beans!) in two hours. it just takes time and repetition to get there <3

and hey congrats on being in a ceramics class!! I hope you have fun with it!! If you like critters, I recommend stealing some of the clay and making some kind of toadish blob out of it and firing it in the kiln, as long as your studio masters won't get mad about it. the joy of making a lumpy little guy is unmatched.

Little guys like this tiny cicada, which is a design I've done so many times that I can make them on autopilot, are in the 5-15 minutes range to sculpt. bunnies, chickens, wizards, and mini-cats are like that for me too!

but if I add the time it takes to paint them, even simple sculptures can end up taking much more time—for instance, this starry chicken took only five minutes to make but about an hour to paint.

then when you get into the more complex shapes, those can take a lot of time—this anthro coyote took me 3 hours to sculpt because it was a complex shape AND I was unfamiliar with making anthros so I was learning as I went:

and when you add complex designs to complex sculptures, you end up with projects like this peach-tree bear, which took three hours to make and five hours to paint, so that's eight hours in one sculpture:

and eight hours is about my limit for sculptures I'm going to sell. BUT. when I'm making things for myself, I'm willing to spend even MORE time on them to make them perfect for my own tastes. I tend to spend the most time on fanart sculptures—it takes a lot more time to make a sculpture perfectly on-model to a pre-existing character than it does to make up a whole new thing. So the sculpture that has taken me the most time so far in this batch is this JoJo's Bizarre Adventure fanart sculpture, Star Platinum:

This time last year I would drive out to shows an hour and a half away from me and my back would already be in pain by the time I arrived. All I could do was stand there and nod along and stand one or two rows back from the pit and hold my arm up to keep people standing if they knocked back into me. By the end of the show I would be fatigued and my feet, my back, my neck, and my shoulders would be in moderate to severe pain, even if I took a naproxen before I left.

Last night I went to a show the same distance from me where the headliner had an hour and a half set. I was on the edge of a rowdy push pit full of sturdy to beefy dudes in their 30s and 40s and even on the edge there was a lot of dancing and jumping and shoving. I honestly only recognized one song from the headliner but I was having the time of my life and was incredibly sweaty and tired out by the end, and only my feet were mildly sore, not even having taken pain meds

It only really struck me last night just how different my experience is now to when I started going to shows regularly 2 years ago, and especially last year at my worst point with pain, and it got me reflecting on what's changed.

I had a breast reduction/top surgery. I had physical therapy, which I'm still seeing the benefits of even though I definitely had some deconditioning after surgery. I switched to slightly better shoes. I also have a different car and the head rest doesn't tilt my neck forward lol. I can't tell if I'm more active or not - I've been going to more shows and going on like 1 or 2 10-min walks per week, but my job changed from hybrid to fully remote so it's hard to tell.

The best part though? Fatphobes can get absolutely wrecked because in the past year I've put on maybe 20-25lbs and my knee and hip pain are gone so🖕🖕

I noticed something I don't like about self-improvement blogs on Tumblr. A lot of them who claim to be goal focused, are all very similar in the sense that they prioritise physical appearances and aesthetic over more ugly or rough truths about growth.

They're all pale pink, girly, sparkly, use Pinterest pictures of pretty girls like Bella Hadid, that model from the terrible Idol show, k-pop girls and celebrities who're pretty. It all just seems so plastic to me because they encourage overconsumption, buying certain products that you can get for so much cheaper, some examples are the Apple headset, those Stanley cups, pink and pastel gym sets, pricey skin care products and makeup like the dior lip gloss.

At first, those blogs looked attractive and eye catchy due to the moodboards of pretty pictures, but after, i realized the advice and self-improvement tips are mostly surface level and vague.

I know that those bloggers have good intentions behind running those blogs, but it won't take away from the fact that everything is seen through pink lenses. Everything is sugar-coated to look pretty, to match those perfect pictures of coquette-esque girls, mostly skinny, and sometimes of colour instead of Caucasian white.

Then there's a certain point where those blogs don't really post any valuable advice anymore, they instead post pictures together that match, add some tags and wait for the notes to roll in.

At some point, I found myself being distracted by photos of playboy models wearing pastel pink dresses, Lana Del Ray photos that were edited to look vintage, bedrooms that had a colour scheme of pink, white and gray, collections of dior makeup, shoes, bags, collectibles, soaps, you get the gist.

Anyway, yep, this is just a short, low-quality, silly little animatic that I started making at a responsible time in the past.

Oh, what was that time you ask? It was just *checks notes* on October 11... which was almost two months ago.....

yeah it was 95% done and then I lost the motivation to do anything productive for awhile lol. But I have finally pushed myself to finish it!!! :D

Getting Jim's hair right was hard at first and I'm still not sure if this is 100% accurate, but I think this looks good on him! And I didn't feel like coloring Kane in, so enjoy this literally paper white boy!

And to put this out there, I generally think comparing someone's trauma response to an animal isn't good, but this is how the audio went so just don't think about it too hard lol. The story already has a lot of dehumanization in it anyway.
