Chris and I- bringing our Baby home for the first time
18+ just in case ALL FLUFF (slight mention of parent death) bringing baby home from being born choose ur own Chris (its an AU) COMMENTS & REBLOGS APPRECIATED no permission to repost republish or tralnslate.
"Chris why are you driving so slow?" I'm with our baby in the back while he's driving the Audi, (always my favorite car)
"Because"
"Yea but hon it's our private road my baby's gunna turn three before we get to the house."
"Um excuse me its our Baby"
"Sure let's just so with that." I playfully roll my eyes and see Chris pout in the rear view mirror.
"That's not funny you know how long I've wanted a family for."
"I do and I'm sorry." I pause for a few second. "Actually I'm not because you're taking forever and I am in desperate need of a bath and she is going to need to be changed soon and you should get rest. Because I am not letting her cry herself to sleep. A d-"
"You think I'd do that? Hell no."
"Good because I'm not going to be the only one getting up so if you can increase to may at least 10 miles an hour. I'd appreciate it."
"Fine. "
"Dare I even ask for 30?" I flirty teases.
"Don't push it." His lip curls a bit.
My phone dings
"Oooo"
What?
"Scott left us cheesecake in the fridge and your mother will be bringing us dinner! God I love your family."
My tears well up
"I know. I'm sorry hon. I'm sure your mother would've loved to be here but I know she's watching over us. "
"I know I just....."
"Hey it's ok you've got my family and they love you more than me so"
I laugh
"It's gunna be weird without dodger there but I can't wait until he gets to meet his baby sister." I changed the topic in a dime-I know. And I know Chris knows I did that on purpose- it's too painful to talk about right now; especially with emotions all over the place.
"I'm glad everyone understood we wanted some alone time."
"Well it was that or we leave them on a porch to freeze."
"Oh my sweet little one you have no idea how much you're loved." I caress her cheek.
"Oh she knows did you see how much she loved people. Who visited her she drank it up."
"Oh I saw. I'm glad she has a big family who loves her. She's so beautiful."
"Just like her mama."
"Chris."
"What? Its true. She is practically your mini me. Franky I'm thrilled I was terrified."
"Yea gorgeous sexy actor who'd want to look like-"
"You do remember those scene where I had to dress up like a woman."
"Good point I'm still traumatized."
"We all were" he laughs
"Chris did we move at all?"
"Yes I'm getting there. Relax."
"Well she gunna be hungrey I know and you know I know when she is gunna get hungrey."
"And exactly how is that."
"Mommys intuition."
"I want daddy's intuition" he pouted
Oh thats easy see carry the child for 9 months and push them out through-"
"Ok ok I was there I don't need to relive it."
"You asked. We almost there I wanna cuddle. Honey we have plen-"
"Who said you I wanna cuddle with my baby girl."
"Me too."
"Well you know how we solve that?"
"No."
"We all cuddle together. Wait you seriously didn't think of that?"
"Hon I am just focused on the road."
"Chris you realized if you go to 30 miles we would've been there 5 minutes ago. Especially since Mama here is getting Hangrey" I cross my arms.
"Ok good point."
Within 2 minutes were back at home.
Chris and I unlock the carrier I go to get out he tells me to wait. He get the car seat/carrier he puts her down on the porch and we can see her from where we are.
"You left our child alone? I look at him with" widened eyes.
He pauses in mid movement not sure what to do or say
"I'm just kidding we can see her from here but hon I can walk by myself."
"I just want to help."
"Nothing I say will change things will it?"
"Nope."
"Worth a try. Anyway. Alright go. She needs to eat I want to sleep and you are on diper duty."
"Got it."
That was easier than I thought," I thought.
"Mother knows best." He replies
"How the hell do you know what I was thinking."
"Because we are that in sync."
"I had that inadvertent smirk on my face going didnt I?"
"Yes."
Before we bring her in he opens the door and goes inside for a moment. Then he comes back out.
He won't let me bend down to pick up the carrier so he picks her up but he are holding both sides of the carrier as we walk in together. Thankfully he has huge doors.
"Home sweet home baby girl."
We get the tiniest tiniest yawn.
"That was the cutest thing ever awww."
"I got it all on film baby."
"What?"
I put my camera to record this. So I can send it to everyone.
Can you not send it to everyone on your acting friends list, that didn't go over well like anytime but just to our close close friends and family I don't trust everyone and its my baby and I-"
"I know I know calm down mama bear. I already have a baby list and got NDAs."
Ok so he's even more paranoid than me.
There was a moment of silence.
"Chris."
"Yea
"What do we do first with her?"
he pauses
"I dont know."
"She's sleeping I dont want to take her out of her carrier."
"Me either dont wake a sleeping baby. We leave her on the floor and get changed?"
"I guess"
Were besides ourselves but we change and we sit on the floor and just stare at her.
"She's still asleep how is this possible"
"I don't know."
"We must have the most perfect baby ever- look at her sweet little breaths."
We stare at her, intensly for a while longer ok, for a lot while longer. He keeps trying to take his phone out. I put my hands over his. I mean after the 200th photo we can give it a rest and just take it in.
Chris mom, who has a key, had came and knocked with her finger to get our attention
"Why is she still in her carrier?"
"She's still sleeping."
"I dont want to wake her. I know she's gunna be hungrey and you know when she wakes up but I can't I can't help it. She's so."
We don't want to miss anything.
Ok you two how about you get some sleep and let grandma take care of her
Me and Chris both pout
Now go. You two sleep while you can.
Chris helps me up why I don't know. But he does and we crawl into bed and cuddle up and I fall asleep in his arms the next thing I know his mother is gently waking me, telling me she's hungrey.
Our sweet angel is brought in to me and Chris wakes up a second before she's brought into me.. she grabs onto my finger as she feeds.
âI love youâ he kissed my temple
âI know.â
He kisses her head and she gives him the dirtiest look.
I let out a huge laugh.
"You're just like mama" he boops her nose which does nothing to dispell her dirty look.
"Mommy doesn't like to be disturbed when she's eating either."
"Ignore daddy" her eyes turn back to me, turning soft, "hes crazy."
"She likes you better."
"Baby im sure its just cause she loves food and I'm her only source. And she doesn't like me better its just baby moods." I don't know if thatâs a thing but its worth a shot to comfort Chris.
"I know she loves you too. She made grabbed hands towards you before she fell asleep."
"Really."
"Yea. Right my little angel you love daddy too."
We turn on the TV low and Chris put on C-span.
"One way to get her to sleep. But maybe save c-span for night time. Put on a movie."
"Which one?â
âI don't know."
We finally settle on Disney's Snow White and not soon after she finishes eating and fals right back asleep. I hold her as Chris puts one arm around me and one arm around the baby.
His mother comes in without us realizing and apprently took a few pictures before she told us to say cheese.
"I'm tired"
"Sleep my love."
"We should put her down in her crib first I wanna do it together its the first time." I pout. So I'm exhausted I'm barely able to make it to her nursery but I'm determined for us to do this as a family. We gently placed her in the crib And Chris is apprently a master at hiding camera because he got the whole thing on film. We placed her in her crib and
and back before I'm out like a light. Chris later told me he held me while watching the baby monitor like a hawk until he fell asleep. I mean she's safe and were home and safe. Theres nothing I need more than what I have right now, snuggling into my husband the perfect first time home.
Ok sure she woke up up for feedings (which Chris got up to get her, and diaper changes and swaddling but she's a baby they do that but she's still a perfect baby... our baby... mine and Chris' perfect baby

Could you do a Kaz x reader where the reader have to "cheat on him" (not in relationship but like she goes to another gang) because someone's threatening her and when he discovers she was just trying to protect him and the gang she dies
A/N: Hi! Thank you so much for a request, I've been wanting to write some angst for a really long time! I hope it is as hurtful as you wished, enjoy xx
TW: angst, blood, killing
kaz brekker x reader
Your hands were sweaty and shaking. You crossed your arms on your chest in order to hide that. You didnât like being threatened, especially by some amateurs. But it wasnât a threat against you, it was against your family in Novyi Ziem. You had to use your whole will power to not kill them right there and then.
âWhy do you think Iâd do anything you want me to?â you asked snapping your gaze between a woman and a man in front of you. âYou donât know anything about me and my family you assume I have.â
âOh, y/n, but we know everything. For instance, your little brother is playing as we talking on your vast field, your parents are watching him with so much love in their eyes,â woman with blonde hair spoke first, describing the scene so vividly that you almost showed an emotion on your face. âmaybe they have already forgotten about you? Maybe your mother is pregnant so they could fill a blank you left in their home.â
âShut up, you think youâre so smart, arenât you?â you snapped, face blank and mind filling with memories from times when you were as young as your brother was then, playing on the exact same field. âI will never betray Kaz, and you should know that.â
âOh sweetie,â the guy beside walked closer to you, you made a step, in order to make some distance between you and them. âweâre not asking you to betray him, weâre asking you to leave this silly gang and join us, Pekka Rollins would be really happy if you did.â
âYou two are much denser than I thought, if you think I want to make him happy.â
âYou donât have a choice.â Blonde said, making you shiver. âWe have someone who would be pleased to kill this little family of yours. I donât think you want them dead, even though they think you are, in fact, dead.â
You started to think about that. Crows were your friends and you love them. Inej and Nina always found various ways to make you cheerful when your day wasnât the best, Jesper taught you how to use a pistol and flirted with you like his life depended on it. Wylan was like a sun in rainy days, even if you loved them, you also loved this boy and his stupid jokes. Matthias was funny to tease, he always was saying how awful you and the girls were, but you could also see this little twitch of his lip corner when he tried to suppress his laugh. And there was Kaz, your beginning wasnât the pleasant one, you nearly killed him when you saw him for the first time, and in revenge he left you in the Barrel for the whole night, all alone. But after that, you started falling for him, and you fell hard. You couldnât exactly point out when that happened, but you were sure youâd anything to save him from himself. He had tough personality, he cared only for money and how he could invest it to get the whole city only for himself. But he let you do that with him, barley sleeping and when you did it was in the same bed. Arm-length gap but you always were less exhausted than when you were sleeping in your own bed. You loved him and the rest of the Crows, but you loved your family more. And you knew what you had to do.
âBitch.â You murmured. âFine, whatever. Just stay the hell out of my family. And the gang.â
âWe knew youâd make a right decision. Pekka will send money to Per Haskell in order to buy your contract. You wonât regret that.â
âI already do.â
After that day, you were about to start living with your new gang, family, like Pekka had said to you the previous day, heâd also told you to not worry about your parents and brother, that they were safe as long as you were working with him, willingly.
You wouldnât call this willingly, but you guessed it was enough to prevent your family from any harm coming from Pekka and his stupid gang. You hated being here, you missed the Crow Club, late night talks with Inej and Nina, and helping Kaz with buying new ships. You wanted nothing more than to escape, but you couldnât. Kaz and Crows could fight and kill, whereas your family was vulnerable, they couldnât even hurt a fly. You spent the whole evening in your empty room. Window with grids making you shiver, you felt like a prisoner you were.
âWe have a job for you.â The blonde girl who captured you came in, like it was her cell, not yours. âBehave and perhaps weâll get rid of those grids.â
You wanted to punch her, you didnât even know her name, it wasnât even relevant, your hand was itching. You took a long, calming breath and looked at her, frowning. âI thought it was another week until youâd trust me enough to even open my window.â
âYouâve been here for two weeks. Plans have changed, we need you right now, so cut the attitude and come with me.â
You rolled your eyes and went after her, going up the stairs and leaving the place Pekkaâs gang lived. You took another deep breath, smelling the awful scent of Ketterdam, smoke and money as Kaz used to say. Gods, you missed him.
âWhere are we going?â you asked, falling into step with the girl, there were only the two of you, you assumed the rest will be somewhere where you were going. âWhatâs the job?â
âCanât you just shut up? Youâll know when weâre there.â
You really wanted to punch her, still you said nothing, you wouldnât get anything from her. It was dark on the cityâs streets, buildings high enough to cover the moon, didnât let its shine to light up the roads. You were annoyed and cold, your hair was swaying with the wind, goose bumps poking on your skin.
âHere.â Blonde said, handing you a pistol. âIf you kill someone from ours, youâre dead before you take your last breath.â
You rolled your eyes, hiding your gun into the pocket of a coat you had. The metal was cold, making your hands even colder than they were before. Now when you had a real gun, not only your knife, perhaps youâd be able to escape. But where would you go? You were sure Kaz knew where you were, perhaps thinking you betrayed him, that thought only made you feel guilty in your guts, he trusted you and you chose people who you hadnât seen for years over him. You had to escape, the cost didnât matter.
When you came to the place, you saw a guy from Pekkaâs gang and Kaz. Both of them were talking, but members of both groups had their guns or blades taken out. The Dirtyhands had his black coat, and his walking stick, as always. Jesper also was beside him, hands on his gun belt, ready to take them out and fire. You were more than sure that Inej was also there, somewhere on the roof or in the shadows, waiting and prepared to fight.
âWe have men everywhere, two on roofs, one behind the bridge. All of them have guns pointed on you and your previous friends. I hope you know what that means.â The girl said, eyeing you. You only nodded, worrying too much about the Crows to even snap at her. âGood, now go and wait for a signal.â
You did as you were told, you hid somewhere behind a building, trying to recall every piece of information you gathered while snooping on guards or using the fact that they didnât always close your doors. You had to find someone and tell them, you couldnât waste any more time.
You poked your head out, searching for Matthias or Wylan. You doubted Nina would be here, since she was still working in the pleasure house. You were sure Wylan was there with his explosion ready to, well, explode. You cursed under your breath, when you couldnât spot any of them, panic getting out of you with frustration. Someone from the Dime Lions would notice youâre not somewhere where they could spot you.
You crossed the narrow lane, as you noticed Matthias, you whistled hoping he would look into your direction. He turned his head and spotted you, anger on his face visible even in the dark. You cringed, knowing youâd get beaten up.
âYouâve got some nerve,â He said, his voice low. âafter you started working with them, you have the audacity to come here.â
âListen, I didnât have a choice,â your voice so close to start begging him for forgiveness. âIt was about my family.â
He looked at you wordlessly, confusion painting his face. Of course, he didnât know you had a family, why would he. After a second, the ire came again. âYouâre lying.â
âI'm not, I want to help you.â
âOh, so now you did that to help us?â
âMatthias, Iâm begging you, just let me tell you what I learnt.â You pleaded, your voice small. âPekka wants to kill you as youâre standing, he has those new guns that can shoot you from really long distance.â
âWhat?â he looked alarmed, âWe have to tell Kaz. Come.â
You let out a breath, it wasnât the best look he sent you, but at least he didnât leave you here. You told him everything you knew, he listened but his face still didnât have pleasant expression.
You took out your gun, making your way behind the dumpster, hiding in shadows. You tried to calm your nerves, but the adrenaline had already kicked in. Matthias and you startled when you heard a shot, then another. You sent yourselves a knowing look, taking a step closer to the place where Kaz and the other guy were talking. Jesper had his guns out and Kaz was looking at the boy in front of him with disgust. You saw one of the Dregs were bleeding, you lifted your gun, targeting the closest one from the Dime Lions and fired. The bullet hit the girl in her stomach, making her stumble and fall to the ground. You hid yourself behind the wall and waited. Matthias sent you a look and you only lifted your arms, not knowing what to said.
After that, guns started firing, screams were everywhere. You saw the blonde girl that came here with you, standing with her pistol, aiming Kaz. You shot without looking, trying to hit her in an arm, you heard her scream and saw how the gun was laying on a ground. You looked up and saw that Kaz was looking at you, his face blank and unreadable. Jesper beside him, shooting people and screaming at Wylan to explode. The sound of explosion came from the roof, exactly where members of Lions were, you let out a shaky breath and made a step into the fight. Matthias fighting with his fists, slowly making his way toward Kaz, you tried to help him clear the path by shooting few people either in their heads or legs.
Your hands were tired, your head pounding but you were fighting hard, you had to make this in order to confess Kaz the whole truth. When you were close to him, he locked his eyes into yours.
âWe have to talk.â You told him, lowering your tone. âPlease.â
âThis is not the best time to talk, y/nâ the way he said your name made you shivered. It wasnât an intimate way, it was with so much poison in only one word. âWhy arenât you fighting with your new gang?â
âKaz, please, Iâm trying to help.â You voiced, your eyes burning with sweat that slowly dripped from your forehead.
âWhatever.â He smacked an opponent with his cane, you only heard the sound of cracked bone and a loud thud when the enemy fell to the ground.
You two were fighting as you had before Pekka came into your life. Kaz understood you without any words, knew exactly where he should cover you because you couldnât. Your movements were precise, keeping people away from Kazâs vulnerable leg. You were fighting in a harmony, you kept your focus on people you had to kill, you shot them without any hesitation. When your bullets ended, you took out your knife and started stabbing everyone who wanted to stab you.
âIâ âyou paused, feeling a pain in your abdomen. You looked at Kaz, but he was looking at your lower stomach, you placed your gaze there and you saw blood. A lot of blood, then you felt pain, you stumbled, but Kaz placed his hand on your waist, slowly letting you fall on the ground. Your whole stomach was on fire, slowly burning you with its flame.
âDonât you even dare dying here, messing my coat with your bloodâ he said, caressing your cheek. You chuckled, tasting blood on your tongue. âDonât even think about it, y/n.â
âIâmâ, please forgive me, Kazâ you murmured, hoped your words were understandable. âI was trying to save my family, but youâre my family too.â
âY/n, I forgive you, but Iâm begging you, donât close your eyesâ his voice filled with regret, eyes burning with anger, but you knew it wasnât toward you. âKeep your eyes open.â He yelled at someone, but you couldnât understand either it was Jesper or Matthias.
âTell them I love themâ you started to give up, your eyelids slowly closing. âI love you, Kaz Brekker.â
âY/n, please donât leave meâ he tried to keep his voice from cracking, but he failed.
But you didnât hear that, you had your eyes closed, hand that was laying on your stomach, now laying on the ground. He carefully removed his arm and got up. He spotted a blonde girl, smirking and looking at him, she slowly lifted her pistol, mockingly swaying it. She winked at him and still with a smirk, she left. Kaz made a promise he would kill her, he would do it for him. And for you.

Daminette- Oblivious Idiots
Ladybug groans her face in a pillow as she freaks out a little a lot.
"How'd you figure it out? I'm not that obvious, am I? Do you think he knows? He can't know, that would be awful- ohhhh NonononononoNOnonononooooo. No. Please, tell me he doesn't know." Ladybug is laying face down on the couch in the living room of Titans Tower, Beast Boy smirking down at her reaction to being found out. The boy just brought up her rather obvious crush, and now the Parisian hero is a little panicked. If Beast Boy noticed who else did? Everyone on the team is really smart.
The Parisian joined the Titans over a year ago after asking the Justice League for help. She fits into the teamâs dynamic really well, playing video games with Beast Boy and Kid Flash; hanging out with Star and binging rom-coms; Raven was a tough nut to crack but didnât seem to mind hanging out. They did get along but respected that they just had very different interests.
Robin is a completely different story, at first he was rude but the bluenette was stubborn. She wasn't going to deal with his bratty attitude, she sticks up for her herself. At some point, the Parisian earns his respect. They became friends over time, working well together though Robin insisted they train so she could improve her technique.
"It's kinda obvious for me, but he's pretty dense. Bats are always idiots when it comes to emotions n' stuff." The young Parisian hero looks up from her pillow.  Â
"I know that... he's my best friend. Friend- Merde. What if he sees me just as a friend!?" The bluenette's hands go to her hair, eyes blown wide. It takes everything in Beast Boy not to laugh at how blind the girl is being. Does she not see how smitten the fourth Robin is for her? That he acts more like a human being when she's around?
"No, what if all he ever sees in me is a friend? This isn't good, then we'll never date and he's just so datable. Have you seen the way his nose crinkles when he tastes something he doesn't like, holding it until it goes away? And the way he swoops his hair, I'd bet it's soft. And he's so strong-"
"Ew. I have ears, please don't-" Ladybug doesnât seem to hear him, continuing her rant.Â
"And then one day I'll have to watch him fall for someone, I think I already have. It's awful- not that I'm not happy he's happy, because I am- but I think he likes Raven. They spend so much time together, sneaking off sometimes."
"I bet they like each other, how could I compete with her. She's amazing, and- and I'm not." The bluenette's tone goes from one of acceptance to defeat.
"Oh, okay, we got serious. Uh- don't cry." When he and Raven went over the plan, they hadn't covered the possibility of a) Ladybug thinking Robin and Raven were a thing; or b) that Ladybug would compare herself to Raven. The Parisian is always so self-confident and optimistic, perfect even- she never lets anyone get her down. She huffs at his less than helpful response.
"I'm not gonna cry. It's just, why would he like me? I'm pretty sure he thinks I'm annoying." The girl stands pacing, trying to decipher the enigma that is Robin. The girl's moods changes at the drop of a dime, leaving Beast Boy to try and play catch-up.
"Am I Â annoying to him? Probably. Raven is so calm and nice, he has no reason not to like her."
"That's definitely not true, if he thinks that he would tell you." She nods, sitting on the couch, leaning on her hands. His words help a little but a girlâs mind is her worst enemy, all the worst 'what if's' popping into her brain like spam mail in an already full mailbox.
This is going to take more intervention than he thought. "You're ridiculous, that isn't true."
"You're just blind, and as you would say- 'you're too close.'" Robin rolls his eyes, Raven is sitting on her bed as Robin looks at her, standing.
"All I'm saying is-"
"I understand what you said, you don't need to repeat it. All I'm saying is-" He mocks, "- that it's highly unlikely she'd be interested in me." This time Raven rolls her eyes, he really is an idiot.
"How can I prove it to you- just ask her out. She'll say yes."
"I don't trust you, you have no proof."
"Fine. Don't believe me, but mark my words, if you wait too long she might settle for someone else. You heard her complain about being mobbed on Valentines day last year."
"Whatever, she didn't like any of them."
"Yeah, because she likes you." Robin glares at Raven as he walks out of her room to go train. Robin first saw her as annoying but she grew on him. He mistook his interest in her as friendship until Raven commented on his liking their latest addition without telling her. It went downhill from there, now itâs like he canât get her off his mind.
He tried to deny it, reason a way out of the conclusion. Raven did her best to encourage him but she was getting nowhere, the entire team was frustrated because both refused to see what was staring them right in the face. Beast Boy and Raven meet with Starfire after both Ladybug and Robin go back to their respective home cities.
"What did you the learn?" Beast Boy speaks up first, recounting his confronting Ladybug about it.Â
"She's got it bad, thinks he and Raven are into each other."Â
"Robin is convinced she doesn't like him. He doesn't want to get rejected so he refuses to ask her out."
"How can we tell him she likes him that he actually does the listening?"
"He'd only be convinced if he heard her say it." Raven reasons, knowing how blind and hard headed Robin is.
"There's no way she'll fess-up, she's too insecure. Even if we convinced her that Robin wasn't into you."
"I wish the little D could just hear her say it in passing. He would ask without fear and she'd get to date him without putting herself out there." Beast Boy can already see it, itâs the perfect plan.Â
"I'm sure I could get her to talk about it in the hall, you could get him close enough to hear?" Beast Boy offers, it could work but they can't see each other.
"We'll use the hallways on the fifth floor, that are separated by a wall and meet towards the elevator?"
"Sounds great, Mama." Raven rolls her eyes at his nickname for her. Starfire looks between the two before abruptly standing, trying to hide her smile.
"Yes, well, I must attend to some dishes. Farewell." The two shared a look. Perhaps it isn't only Robin and Ladybug that need to come clean.
"We gotta say something sooner than lat-"
"I know, but not yet. We could use this to our advantage..." "Right? So I had to go all the way to the other side of the city to deliver this banner, it was worth it though. The skater friend won."
"Do they still race? You said this was a normal way to spend your weekend."
"O-oh well, I don't see them much anymore." Ladybug's shoulders turn inwards, looking to the floor. Robin hates the small frown on her lips, he knows better than to pry but maybe if he got some more information he could help.
"How come?"
"Just, time. Grew apart I guess."
"You're an awful liar."
"I take that as a compliment!" Ladybug defended, smiling slightly. "You see, while Mr.-Tall,-Dark,-Handsome,-and-Mysterious is making up lies he has to keep straight I'm simply seen as an airhead that forgets her phone everywhere she goes!"
"You're even worse at changing the subject." Ladybug's smile falters.
"Hehe, yeah, have you seen Star? She said she had the cutest picture of you asleep in your costume with some dog." Robin crosses his arms, why is she avoiding the subject?
"I have plenty of pictures of 'the dog' but please-" He pats the seat next to him on his bed, "-elaborate on this 'growing apart' situation." He isn't going to give in, he has that face he used to do during training when she was too tired to get up. Ladybug sit, plopping onto the bed her arms spread across the comfortable fabric of the duvet.
"I can't say much, just that they don't want to be friends with me anymore. None of them do."
"Who's none of them?"
"My friends. All of them, only one does but they 'can't' be my friend. He just doesn't have enough of a backbone."
"Surely you have other friends besides the mindless heathens."
"School and hero duties add up, I hardly have enough time to keep up with my jobs. I don't have time for that, and they could get suspicious, notice the patterns where my old friends would see the clumsy forgetful me." He nods, laying on his back and turning to look her in the eye.
"At least I have you guys." She smiles, brushing some hair from Robin's forehead. It feels nice.
"If it were up to me-"
"It isn't, and it's best not to dwell. Come on, bird boy, let's get a snack."
"Right, but none of that hot chocolate nonsense." She rolls her eyes, she'll get him to try it. One day.
"Are we sure this is gonna work?" Beast Boy is unsure, Raven hadn't seen the way Ladybug reacted, it was like no matter what he said her mind found some way to turn it into a bad thing, like she could only see the worst in a situation. It was completely unlike her.
"Yes."
"But-"
"No 'but's', this will give Robin the push he needs to ask her out. She'll say yes. End of story."
"Then why are we planning the the thing with the mo-"
"In case he's more dense than humanly possible and because it's time people knew."
"Right... I'll wait till ten minutes from now to get her to walk past, you have till then to get him there, we'll take two laps just in case." Raven nods before going to look for Robin. She finds him in the living room, reading a book.Â
âCome.â Raven turns around and makes her way towards the elevator, he catches up and they ride to the fifth floor. They exit and hide behind the designated wall.Â
"You are not to make a sound, simply wait and listen.â
They wait.
And listen.
It takes ten minutes for something to happen, the elevator bell rings and opens at their floor. Raven motions for him to stay quiet. Robin hears to footsteps as someone sighs.
"-How could I not? He's just so- dreamy."
"Ew. Why do you even like him? You're too nice for him."
"I am not 'too nice' and Robin is not mean... He's just... gruff- yeah, gruff, at first. But you should have seen how cute it was when we were talking about something and I was laying and he laid down next to me and there was hair blocking his eyes a little so I swiped it out of the way and it was so soft." She says it all in one breath which should be concerning if Robinâs attention wasnât being taken up by trying to not freak out. His eyes wide, back pressed against the wall so as not to get caught. She keeps talking, he has to hear more.
She sounds so sure of her affection, like itâs the most natural thing in the world. She likes him? Like to date? Raven is right? This is impossible, but it was happening. Sheâs ranting about things not even he notices about himself like theyâre the most amazing things in the world.
"And have you seen him smile? And his laugh, it's one of my favorite things about him. And did you notice the way he always perks up when there's a happy animal on the television, like it reminds him of something- I'd bet he has an animal. I wish I could have a pet." They kept walking, she kept rambling about him, his hair, his smile, the way he walked. He heard the voices fade at she and Beast Boy kept walking.
"I told you." Robin didn't even have a response, she feels the same way?
"She likes me?"
"You've got to be joking, after all that, you still don't believe it?"
"Shut up, I'm processing." Raven crosses her arms, impatiently waiting, they'll loop back soon.
"She likes me."
"Just keep listening." Ladybug and Beast Boy came back into earshot. When they got closer, Beast Boy cut her off when she starts going off topic about his hair.
"So if he asked you out, what would you do?" Robin hears them stop, she makes a high pitched whine he knows means sheâs flustered, she used to do it every time he glared her down and got a little too close, at the time, an unknown symptom of his attraction towards the heroine.
"I mean, if I could speak- I'd say yes but I'd probably freak out and fall or trip over my words. It doesn't matter, he wouldn't ask. Why in the world would he like me?" Raven has to remind Robin to stay quiet and hidden with a shushing motion and a hand to his shoulder. He stays in place despite the fact that he wanted to list every reason why he would. His stupid monkey brain thought of kissing her to drive his point home but shoos the intrusive thought away.
"Right, and what you'd kiss him?" It was like his teammate is reading his stupid, teenage mind.
"Pretending he liked me back? I mean, I could go on about his li-"
"Please don't." The bluenette laughs with him.
"Ah! I have to go meet Robin for training. Bye!"
"Later." The girl's footsteps disappear as the elevator door arrives and carries her towards the training room.
"Dude you better not say she doesn't like you again." Beast Boy sad, knocking on the wall to get his attention.
"Why don't you just ask her?"
"Yes, the little D, she will the gladly accept." Kor'i appears out of nowhere, he hates when she hovers like that. He can never tell where she is. He glares at them all, heâs late to meet with Ladybug. How in the world is he going to face her after that, it was so wrong to have listened. She hadn't meant for him to hear those things. Robin is filled with guilt as he walks into the waiting elevator and nears the training room. Ladybug is there smiling and slightly pink, likely from their teammate's questions.
"Are you alright?"
"Yes." He couldn't tell her he heard, she'll get embarrassed. He can't act on it either, she sounds busy enough as is. He would just be in the way.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes." He snaps at her this time, the rest of their training session is silent. She leaves back to Paris as soon as her shift is over, not staying to speak with Robin like she usually does. No one is amused by his behavior.
"What the hell? You get the confirmation you've been needing to finally ask her out and you start acting like you hate her?" Beast Boy finally exclaims, Raven kicks him under the chair.
"It's none of your business, and none of you should have interfered. I was not meant to hear any of that, she doesn't have time for me anyways." Robin gets up from his seat and walks towards the zeta-tube.
After that, things get a little better. Robin isn't rude or snappy to her but they don't talk or have their little one on one training sessions. Ladybug does everything in her power to try and rebuild the bridge she didn't know had been burnt. She doesn't know what she did wrong, what she said, what happened made Robin want to avoid her like the plague.
Is he going to leave her too?
No. It doesn't matter that he probably put two and two together and knows she likes him, that he probably likes someone else, he is her friend at the very least, it might not be enough but itâs something.
Ladybug gathers her courage, waiting for him to pass the one place she knows she can get him. Waiting right at a corner, she hears him coming. She wants to laugh when he slows, always knowing when she tries to sneak up on him, but this time she holds it in. Reminding herself of why sheâs there.
Just as he comes into range, she turns the corner and faces him.Â
Her face is angry, no, pissed. Her eyebrows scrunched, a deep frown replacing the usual smile, she shoves a finger onto his chest. He always knew she was there but her expression, itâs hurt and angry and world ending- his world to be specific.
"What is your deal? What the hell did I do to you that you won't even talk to me anymore? What did I say? Why do you suddenly hate me?"
"I-"
"I mean, one day we're laughing and talking, and I tell you about what happened with my friends, and then the next you don't even bother to greet me!" She berates him in French, she gets more passionate about her speech until she's out of gas. At least, that's what he thinks.
âItâs disrespectful and hurtful! You donât just drop someone because they did something to upset you, you try to fix it. You try to work through it!âÂ
"I-"
"What? You what? I told you about my friends, not only did I put a lot of trust in you for that- it could have pointed towards my identity if I slipped up. You're too easy to talk to. And don't you dare say that this is just how you are because we both know you've been off lately. So just tell me! Tell me you hate me, tell me you want space, tell me somethings wrong or that I did something but just don't shrug this off. You are too important to me to just let this go!" He can see the unshed tears in her eyes, why is she crying? Why does he have to make her cry? He doesnât deserve her tears, her affection, he doesnât deserve her.Â
"I just- I think you can do better. Iâm not a good enough companion." Robin refused to use the word friend, she isnât his friend, sheâs so much more than that. A rouge tear falls, her face incredulous.
"What?"
"You sound busy enough, you'd be better off spending your time with someone else." Robin doesnât look her in the eye, itâs the honest truth but he canât stand looking at her so upset.Â
Ladybug is at a loss, thatâs why heâs upset? Because he thinks she was wasting her time? That he wasn't good enough for her to spend her time with?
Itâs like a switch flips, her anger melting away. Her jabbing finger falls.
"Who could be better?" She hugs him, Damian does have some experience from Grayson so he awkwardly returns the favor. The far shorter girl sniffles once before pulling back with a smile.
Robin feels a pang in his chest, he made her cry. She wipes away the unshed tears from the corners of her eyes, glad to have the mess over and done with. He vows never to do so ever again.
"I never wanna hear you say that you're anything less than the best, c'mon time to get your butt handed to you."
"Spar?"
"You wish." Robin sighed, she always beats him in video games. As they walk, the alarm blares. Thereâs an attack somewhere. The duo runs towards the living room, Starfire is already there with Beast Boy, Raven, and Kid Flash.
"We've got two. There's some kind of monster tearing through down town, we need to stop them."
"And the other?" Robin asks.
"Paris, akuma." Ladybug groans, like she always does. She runs off towards the zeta tubes with a wave goodbye. Time to deal with the mangy cat's puns.
Robin and the rest of the team walk back into Titan Tower expecting to see Ladybug waiting for them, she always gets back before them in situations like this. Kid Flash speeds off after grabbing his things saying heâs late to something, as usual. Beast Boy limps, most of his weight supported by Raven as they make their way towards the med bay.Â
Robin and Starfire sit in the living room, she shows him photos of Dick in ridiculous sleeping positions or mid fall but Robin is on edge. Why isn't she back yet?
Of course, he gets an immediate answer. Ladybug's distress signal goes off, he and Star are off without a moment's hesitation. Jumping into the zeta-tubes, worry for their teammate clear. After over a year of working with her sheâs never used the distress button. The machine powers up and blinds them, Damian jams a communicator in his ear and tunes in to the local news station. He hears where Ladybug is and he and Starfire set off in search for the girl. Paris is bright, people stop and stare as the heroes make their way towards the Eiffel tower.
Robin's mind is hyper focused and clouded at the same time, he knows he has to be at his best to help Ladybug so he shoves all that annoying emotion in a stupid box, shuts it, locks it, and pushes it into a dark little corner. They arrive at the lawn of the Eiffel tower.
Looking exhausted, Ladybug charges the villain. A blond boy in a black cat suit is flung at her with ease. The monster tries to throw a bus full of people at the two as Ladybug tries to get the boy off, he doesnât seem to care, trying to hug the girl. Robin feels his chest tighten in jealousy.
Robin motions towards the bus, Starfire flies past and catches the bus mid air. The dark haired teenage boy is quick to lift the ill equipped partner he's heard so very much about off Ladybug.
"I believe she is trying to get up." He drops the boy to the side before offering a hand to Ladybug.
"Hello, again." Ladybug smiles up at him, taking Robins hand. Pulling her up, the two stand close together. Staring.
"Hi."
"Shall we get back to the task at hand?!" Starfire asks, mid battle with the monster when Ladybug and Robin snap back to reality. They join the fight, Chat sticks to the sidelines with a pout. The monster is tough, she only pressed the panic button in fear of the hostages being injured or killed. Even if they were physically healed by the miraculous cure itâs traumatizing.
The battle doesnât last very long, the monster is extremely susceptible to Robin's ice capsules, and is no match for Kor'i's strength.
Ladybug is relieved when she sees the purified akuma flap away.
"Miraculous Ladybug!" The bluenette was able to use her lucky charm quickly enough, she'd say thank you before giving Tikki food and returning to the tower to finish her shift.
"Well done."
"Thank you, you weren't too bad yourself." Marinette smiles back to the far taller boy.
"Will you be returning to the tower? Should we wait for you?"
"You are the kidding, yes? We are in Paris! I'd like to go the shopping!" Ladybug laughed.
"With what money? My brother's card is rather telling. As is your own."
"I suppose you are correct."
"Don't worry, Starfire, we can go on a shopping day soon." The girl smiled.
"Yes, the little D, would you join us? Raven may join as well, yes, Ladybug? Girls day!"
"I do not qualify as a girl."
"Little D?" Ladybug asks, smiling softly before bursting into laughter. "I need to go help the victim and recharge. I'll see you back at the tower." Ladybug turns to leave but comes face to face with Chat.Â
"What are you doing here? We don't need you." He directs his comments to both of the American heroes but mostly towards Robin. Ladybug pinches the bridge of her nose.
"We are members of the Teen Titans, we were asked to come. Now if you'll excuse us-"
"What? Who asked you to come here. My lady and I would never-"
"I did, and I am not 'your lady' you need to stop with the names and trying to distract me mid-battle, Chat.âÂ
âBut-â Ladybug gives the mangy cat no time to explain, cutting in with no patience.
âNo âbutâs, you almost got us and all those hostages killed. Go. Home.â The tro of Titanâs walk away, itâs best not to give the boy anymore attention.
"We should do it now."
"What'd you mean? He's still acting like he can't stand her."
"No, they made up. I heard her yelling at him about it. He caved pretty quickly after that. We do it tonight, no more sneaking around and hopefully they get together." Beast Boy nods, watching Raven ice his ankle for him.
"Thanks, mama."
"... You're welcome." He smiles flicking some water on his girlfriend, she looks at him with a sad excuse for a glare.
"Alright, the ice should stay. Let's go see if she's back." Raven makes sure to keep Beast Boy off his ankle, quickly shooing him off to the empty living room couch. They donât wait long for Robin, Starfire, and Ladybug to return.
"Thanks again for coming to help, guys." Starfire smiles. Robin nods.
"It was our pleasure, what shall we do now?"
"Movie?" Beast Boy asks, getting immediate yeses from the girls.
"I'll pass-"
"Come on." Raven complains, the guy can be such a pain.
"tt, no. That doesn't work on me."
"Pretty please?" Starfire asks. She pulls out the baby doll eyes and a pout.
"No, the physical appearance of the 'please' makes no difference-"
"Please?" Ladybug pulls out all the stops, she looks him right in the eyes, those big, blue, innocent eyes were so sad and pretty, she shuffles a foot, her hands behind her back. Her bottom lip juts out ever so slightly as her torso sways back and forth. His response is immediate.
"Yes." Ladybug grins in victory, Damian doesnât get the chance to backpedal.
"Yay!" Starfire quickly steals Robin's usual seat. Raven and Beast Boy take up one side of the couch, Robin and Ladybug take up the other. Everyone bickers and argues over which movie to watch until Robin gets annoyed and plays one of the few movies he can bear. Lion King.
Throughout the duration of the film, Beast Boy slowly pushes Ladybug closer to him laying longways until he takes up the majority of the couch. Ladybug is squished against Robin, their arms pressing uncomfortably against each other. Deciding to test the waters, Robin wraps an arm around the Parisian's shoulder. The lights were off but the girl's blush is obvious. She has yet to move, he feels her glance in the opposite direction for a moment before leaning onto him.
Damian wasn't freaking out... Okay, Damian was only freaking out a little. He didnât do well last time he saw she likes him. What should he do now? An annoying and sarcastic voice told him not to ignore her but they weren't much help. The little Grayson in Damian's mind told him to pull her a little closer, maybe kiss her head to make his intentions more clear. She still isn't aware of his affection towards her. He does the first, he could all but see the little Grayson smiling. Robin has no clue what to do next so he just does his best to watch the movie.
The lights come on far too soon, Ladybug doesn't move to get off him until she notices the lights turn on. She blushes that adorable shade of pink. That's when he sees it, just behind a blushing bluenette is Raven snuggling with Beast Boy as if itâs the most normal thing in the world. His brows furrow, his arm falls of Ladybugs shoulder. It was clear this isnât a one time thing or anything of the sort. They know exactly what theyâre doing, theyâve been seeing each other and she didn't tell him. After all the times he spoke about Ladybug, she didn't care to mention her own relationship.
Ladybug follows his line of sight, her posture goes from relaxed to tense.
To Marinette itâs like confirmation to something she knew all along, he likes Raven. Maybe he only wrapped his arm around her because of how squished they were. Which means she completely misread the situation and leaned onto him when he was just trying to be comfortable.
"I knew it!" Starfire exclaims, beaming. Raven just looks away trying or hide her small smile. Ladybug is happy their happy but Robin just walks away, his face neutral. She hates when he makes that face. Soon Starfire has to leave and Beast Boy hobbles to his room, ankle still tender.
Ladybug's overthinking keeps her in place, staring at her hands. She doesnât even notice that Raven is still in the room with her.
"You should go talk to him."
"W-what? Me? No, he doesn't want to talk to me." Ladybug tried to say no but she couldn't help but be worried for Robin. Raven gives her a look, she relents.
"Fine." Ladybug drags herself to where she knows he'll be. He was always on the roof when he has to think. She mentally prepares herself for an undeniable, verbal confirmation that he doesn't like her, she forces herself to go- to be there for him.
"Go away." Damian is in no mood to deal with Raven, how could she not tell him?
"You can't get rid of a bug that easily, Rob." He chastises himself for being rude to Ladybug again, at least she doesn't sound upset because of it. She doesn't say anything, sitting next to him as they look over the brightly lit cityscape.
"Wanna talk about it?" He doesn't respond. The little Grayson, encouraged by the success of last time, tries to get Damian to hold her hand. Their hands were so close, just a few inches apart. That definitely isn't happening. "Right..." She trails off, not knowing what else to say. The silence grows, unchecked like a cancer.
"I- Just- Why wouldn't she tell me? After-" Robin was about to say too much but thankfully stopped himself.
"After what?" Heâs relieved sheâs still ignorant of his affection, putting himself out there like thatâs a scary thought.
"Nothing. Nevermind."
"After you told her you like her." She speaks with such certainty, like sheâs accepted it as fact. Is that what she really thought?
"What? No- I just- confided in her about something similar. I expected she'd do the same. She's one of my best friends." He sees Ladybug nod, that same look of on her face.
"I'm sure she didn't mean to hurt your feelings. They probably just wanted to keep it quiet until they were ready to tell everyone." Robin had to admit she was probably right. He saw the way her hands fiddled and folded, she was trying to think of something to talk about, likely to distract him. She was always so considerate.
"So... girlfriend."
"Where'd you hear that?" He was so confused, the very idea is ridiculous.
"Well, you said you confided in Raven about something similar. I just assumed you had a partner."
"Oh. No." They sat in silence again, looking over the silent harbor. Damian gathers his courage, now is the perfect time- looking over a clear sky with the stars out. Isn't this the kind of situation girls daydream about? Now was the most likely time for her to accept. Deciding to just get it out, Damian starts speaking.
"Actually there's-"
"I know you probably don't-" Of course, just as Robin starts speaking, she does too. Alarm bells start ringing in his head, the little Grayson is trying to figure out what she was going to say while the rest of him starts freaking out.
They awkwardly laugh, looking away, Damian feels an unfamiliar little burning sensation on his cheeks. Heâs loosing more of his nerve by the second.
"ILikeYou,LikeLikeLike." She just blurts it out, redder than her costume. Damian's head snaps to her with his lips parted. This is happening.
"I feel the same way. I- I apologize I didn't say so sooner I just- you said you were so busy already, I didn't want to become a distraction." Ladybug gives him a small smile, that was what that was about. She fondly wipes the hair from his forehead back, lacing her fingers through his hair. Her hand rested at the back of his neck, smiling. She looks so content, at peace.
"I see no issue in distractions."
"I suppose this is the part of the story where we kiss?" Robin puts a hand on the Parisian's cheek, inching closer. They move to close the gap until they were just a hairsbreadth away. Her eyes are so blue and so beautiful up-close.
"I suppose you'd be correct." Their lips meet, the beautiful night sky behind them- everything else melting away.

Shared Minds and Shared Souls (1/?)
Pairing: Spike x Female!Reader
Warnings: Angst, mentions of death, swearing
Word Count: 2.9k
Story Summary: Driven by the power she posses as a witch and psychic, Y/N returns to Sunnydale to pay a visit to her family after she has a vision about Dawn. She isnât exactly like her duty first and justice before all else cousin Buffy as Y/N follows her own rules. She offers her aid to the Scoobies during their drama with Glory. Y/N doesnât plan to stay long until she experiences an unparalleled connection with a certain vampire from North London.
Masterlist
I never imagined myself visiting a small town like Sunnydale. Iâve lived in many places, but never California. The west coast isnât exactly my style. For one, itâs hot. Two, the hippy-dippy happy-go-lucky attitude makes my eyes roll. Finally, Los Angeles reminds me of Celia, my cousin. Buffy, Celia, and I were inseparable as children. Dawn tried to tag-along in our make-believe games, but Buffy grew annoyed with her quickly. I havenât been back in California in a decade for this very reason. Everything about California reminds me of a time when we were just kids. Before everything went to Hell in a hand basket.Â
Blasting Green Day in front of the hospital, I park my 1967 bright red Mustang. I take a minute to collect myself before barging in. Buffy and Dawn donât exactly know Iâm coming, but thereâs something I have to warn them about, something so crucial that I drove here all the way from New York. The funny part will be explaining to Buffy that I know sheâs the Slayer. To her knowledge, Iâm just her ordinary cousin who she hasnât seen since we were ten. In reality, Iâm a psychic witch, have been since birth. Well, Iâve been psychic since the womb, the witchy part came later. Oh, and I canât forget seeing the dead part, I always do. That little twist comes with the psychic part. Yeah, imagine a little ten-year-old me seeing my recently deceased cousin at her funeral⌠fun times. It explains the whole discomfort toward California. Low-key traumatized, but all good. Any who, I should probably stop the hesitation and just head inside.Â
As I stroll down the bitter cold hospital hall, I grip the leather straps of my backpack nervously.Â
âHi Buffy,â I rehearse under my breath. âYou probably donât recognize me, Iâm Y/N⌠your cousin. Itâs great to see you- God I sound so stupid!âÂ
I follow the signs on the wall toward the Neurology unit. Hospitals, cemeteries, funeral homes, old buildings, all great places to bump into ghosts. The things I do for family, boy do these guys owe me.Â
As I turn down yet another peach colored hall- geez this place is dated- my eyes land on a familiar blonde in the waiting room at the far end. Oh great, here we go. Buffy doesnât notice me right away, being too occupied with doting on a sleeping Dawn resting her head on her lap. I take note of the blondie boy sat beside her. Iâm guessing heâs with Buffy. Good for her, a strong seven out of ten. I would rate him higher, but heâs not my type, too All-American boy-next-door.Â
âLooks like Iâm right on time,â I determine once Iâm closer, thus making my presence known. Buffy peers up at me and her eyes widen steadily. Blondie next her looks between me and Buffy. Her surprised reaction makes him tense, I nearly assure him Iâm not a threat.Â
âY/N?â She gentle shakes Dawn to wake her as she rises from her seated position. âWhat are you doing here?âÂ
âI heard about your mom⌠â I explain vaguely. In truth, I saw it in a vision and a lot more beyond that, but Iâll just say my mom told me for now.Â
Buffy makes long strides and warmingly embraces me. I can sense the desperation in her touch. Her ora is all out of wack. I could see the mess her colors are from yards away. It seems like I did really arrive at the perfect time. Buffy needs me now more than ever.Â
âY/N!â Dawn gasps behind us.Â
Buffy and I part, her eyes stare into mine pleadingly. Yeah, we really need to have a chat. Preferably somewhere we can be frank, truly frank, no bullshit like Iâm spilling right now.Â
âOh my God!â Dawn squeals, rushing down to greet me. She squeezes me like a stress ball as she rambles on about how much sheâs missed me. Then, Dawn starts to ask the tough questions as usually does. The girl has never quite had a filter. âWhere have you been?â
âNew York mainly,â I laugh.Â
âHow come youâve never come to see us before?â She rushes out as Buffy continues to stare at me in awe. It could be she thinks sheâs dreaming this.Â
âDawn, I-âÂ
She cuts me off, âhowâs aunt Lolly? Are you college? When did you get in?â
âDawnie!â I laugh, âI will answer all your questions, promise. Weâll catch up! For now,â I look at Buffy. âI need to have a chat with your sisterâŚâÂ
The girl scoffs, rolling her eyes dramatically as she crosses her arms over her chest. âOf course, youâre for Buffy⌠everyone is always here for her. No ever visit me,â she grumbles.Â
âIâm here for you too,â I assure Dawn. âI just⌠itâs important I speak with Buffy right now. Itâs about something-âÂ
âIâm sorry, but who are you?â Blondie interrupts, his face covered with confusion.Â
âIâm Y/N,â I introduce myself. âIâm Buffy and Dawnâs cousin.âÂ
âIâm Riley, the boyfriend,â he offers me his hand.Â
Wow, quite the introduction. Iâm not much of a contact-person, but this seems like the perfect opportunity to gather information on G.I. Joe. As I shake his hand, Iâm able to visualize memories and emotions from him. They come as flashes before my eyes. I hear his thoughts, see through his eyes, and feel what heâs felt. All I see Buffy, moments theyâve had. At first, pleasure and immense happiness consumes my head. Then, itâs replaced with doubt and self-deprecation. The obsession with Buffy is replaced with desperate longing. He feels her slipping.Â
My visual is cut-off when Riley removes his hand. Iâm brought back to current moment, surrounded by chaos of the hospital.Â
Dawn frowns, curiosity etched across her features. âWhatâs so important that you had to come all the way? Does it have to do with Mom?â
âYou came all the way from New York?â A male voice questions behind me.Â
What is this an interrogation? The sooner someone tells me where Buffy is the sooner I can head back home. Believe me, I donât want to be here longer than I have to be. I glance over my shoulder, Willow and Xander stare at me in confusion. Weâve never met, but I know of them, the visions. Iâve been keeping tabs on Buffy and the family since⌠well⌠since Buffy became the Slayer.Â
âYes,â I answer Xander directly. Turning back to Buffy, I not so discretely tell her itâs urgent. âPlease, Buff, do you have minute? I know this isnât exactly opportune but-âÂ
âOf course,â she swallows hard. âWe can uh⌠we can talk outside. Thereâs a courtyard just over there,â she gestures down the hall.Â
âIâm coming with,â Riley declares next to her.Â
âIâm sorry, is your name Buffy?â I sass, much to his frustration. âWhat am I going to do her? Sheâs my cousin. Iâm only borrowing her for a second, then you can toss the leash back on her.âÂ
âY/NâŚâ Buffy mutters for me to stop.Â
Riley narrows his eyes at me- oof, Iâm real scared now! While I giggle at her boyfriendâs expense as the two of us start down the hall. Iâve missed Buffy, we used to be like two peas in-a-pod. Once all this drama Iâve seen in her future is over, perhaps we can be close again. I refuse to settle in Sunnydale though. At least we have phones and email.Â
Once outside, and weâre certain weâre alone, Buffy cuts to the chase. âNot that Iâm not happy youâre here, Y/N, I am but, why are you here?â She hasnât changed a bit.
I snicker, peering up at the sky as the sun it starting to set. Gosh, I hate the day. That sounds weird because what human hates daytime, but I do. Iâm much more⌠in tune with myself when itâs night time. I thrive off the moonlight and stars. The sun and its rays are hot, too hot. I like the cold and darkness of night.Â
âFine, letâs get right to it,â I smirk at my cousin wickedly. Reaching into my back pocket, I pull out my pack of cigarettes, feeling a bit anxious. âYou mind?â I ask her, not really caring but figure I should check.Â
Timidly, she shakes her head. Her arms are securely crossed in front of her as she watches me take a smoke. âThose things will kill you,â she advices the cookie-cutter phrase.Â
âSo can a car accident, yet we still drive,â I remark with sass. âWhatâs life without a little risk?â I wink.Â
Buffy shifts on her feet as her jaw clenches. Her aura is shifting again, Black to red, Iâve never seen someone change on a dime so fast. Thatâs change is funny, sheâs either angry or afraid of me, maybe both. I canât blame her, Iâm not exactly a Care Bear. My black and red attire doesnât scream comforting.Â
âThen again, you would know all about death, right Cuz?â I suggest subtly.Â
Her eyes lock with mine and I start to see the wheels turning her head. âDoes she know? How could she?â Sheâs likely thinking to herself. One touch and I could hear for certain what sheâs thinking.Â
âWhat are you talking about?â She mumbles, barely meeting my eye.Â
I scoff, tossing my head back, why canât this be easier? You know what, fine! Growing impatient, I hold my hand out, palm to the sky. âLight,â I verbalize and within seconds a bright orb floats above my palm.Â
Buffy stares at my magic stunned. Yeah, I was sort of expecting that kind of reaction.Â
âHow⌠HowâŚâ She stutters.Â
âIf youâd like a mini bolt of lighting I can do that too,â I offer. âI kind of prefer them, far more powerful!âÂ
She doesnât share in my excitement as she slowly steps closer still in awe. âYouâre a witch?âÂ
âYep!â I smile, rather proud. âHave been for a while now, gotten pretty good at it too, not to brag or anythingâŚâÂ
âSoâŚâ Buffy continues to process everything. âYou know about demons, vampires-âÂ
I hum, âall of it. Including that youâre the Slayer, congrats by the way! Fun shit,â I compliment with a snicker.Â
âNot exactly how Iâd describe it,â she mutters defeatedly, her eyes still on the orb.Â
Closing my fist, the orb disappears and I place my hand on Buffyâs shoulder. Her eyes meet mine solemnly.Â
âHow long have you known?â She asks unfazed.Â
âSince forever,â I answer truthfully. âSorry I never called or have come to help. Iâve sort of been cheering for ya from the sidelines. In all honesty, Iâve been away perfecting my magic with a coven. Iâve met some pretty interesting people along the way, all dazzled when they find out Iâm related to the Slayer,â I gush.Â
She pays no mind to my compliments, still in a daze. âDoes anyone know? Does your dad?âÂ
I shake my head and sternly tell her, âhe can never know! He thinks Iâve been away at school in Boston. In truth, Iâve been in New York with a coven.âÂ
Buffy nods in understanding, though I know Joyce is aware of the supernatural world. My mom could never handle it. âDid you come all the way here to tell me that?âÂ
Okay, hereâs the hard part, the real hard part! I finish my cigarette, pondering the last relaxing bit of it before tossing it to the ground. âOkay, so hereâs the deal,â I begin. âThereâs a this big nasty bitch Iâve seen in my visions- I see visions by the way-â I add in passing, having forgotten it. Then, I remember I canât forget the ghosties bit. âAnyway, youâve already bumped into her, Glory. Yeah, sheâs a real charmer from what I can see. Iâm here to help because based on my visions, sheâs kicking your asses.âÂ
I leave out a crucial bit of information, a part of the visions Iâm not sure I can share. One important thing about being a psychic is not changing fate. As much as I want to tell Buffy everything, I know I canât, not if I donât want to mess with the world.Â
âSo, youâre here to help us stop Glory?â She clarifies.Â
âIt gets real fucked at some points,â I tell her, hoping that doesnât reveal too much.Â
âAnd I take it you know about DawnâŚâ she insinuates.Â
I nod my head slowly, âyou mean that sheâs The Key? Then yes, I do. Sheâs about as human as the Teletubbies, but of course I wonât mention that to her. Who all knows?âÂ
âAs of right now, me and Giles. Heâs my Watcher,â she explains. âDid you already know that?â Sheâs catches on quickly.Â
âKindaâŚâ I answer hesitantly. âSorry if thatâs weird. Iâve tried not to pry with my visions. If it makes you feel better, I didnât know who Riley was! He mustnât have been around the last time I checked in!âÂ
âWhen was the last time you⌠ya know⌠checked in?â She asks, unsure of how to phrase it.Â
âWell, Iâve been away with the coven. I joined them right after high school, so I suppose it was when you started at UC Sunnydale. I know all about Willow and Xander, they seem nice from what Iâve seen. Angel, his in-and-out appearance in my visions was confusing for a while until I realized he was doing that in real life too,â I laugh.
âSo you saw all of the Spike drama and my mom finding out about me too?â She asks.Â
I frown, I saw Joyce learning about Buffy and that whole conversion, but Iâve never heard of a Spike. Based on my expression, Buffy predicts the answer.Â
âSpike is the biggest pain in my ass,â she groans. âHe and Angel used to be all vampy together. Then, Angel gained a soul and Spike got worse from what Iâve gathered. Heâs killed two Slayers, so weâre not exactly friends. We met when he tried to kill me. Heâll show up and leave again, kinda like Angel but less helpful. Except now, heâs acting all infatuated with me and sticking around.âÂ
I snicker, âoof, so you have a psychotic vampire lusting after you? How did I miss this?!âÂ
Buffy rolls her eyes, âbelieve me, itâs not fun.â Â
âIs he hot?â I inquire, always interested in a troubled bad-boy type.Â
She stares at me with narrowed eyes of disapproval and scoffs, âoh my God⌠never ask me that again.âÂ
âHe mustâve showed up and gone between visions,â I determine. âI wasnât able to check in much after you started at UC. Which reminds me, your roommate Kathy- not a fan of her,â I confess with a bit of humor.Â
âTurned out to be a demon,â Buffy explains, much to my surprise.Â
I gasp, âno way! Ugh, I saw you move-in, some interactions here and there, but thatâs about it. I knew there was something up with her!âÂ
Buffy laughs, actually smiling for the first time since our reunion. It feels great having someone know Iâm a witch who isnât a witch themselves. Being away in New York with the coven was great and utterly freeing. They were the first people who I showed my true self to. Now, finally, someone I care about knows the real me. I have so much more to share with her!Â
Buffy takes my hand gently, âIâm really glad youâre here. Lately⌠lately things have been more difficult than I couldâve ever imagined,â she confesses, swallowing back her tears and looks at the ground. âWith Mom and protecting Dawn, Iâm not sure I can do it all on my own. I mean, I have my friends, Giles, and Riley butâŚâ she meets my gaze, tears puddling in her eyes. âI needed you, I just didnât quite know it. I needed my other sister,â she weeps.Â
Immediately, I pull Buffy into my chest and hug her tightly. I shouldâve come sooner. I shouldâve felt Buffyâs pain. I guess I was so caught up with the coven and I forgot to check on her, so I missed the signs. Iâm here now, thatâs all that matters. Now, I can help. Seeing Buffy so upset makes my blood boil. Anyone who fucks with my family gets knocked off this planet, which means Glory has another coming at her in the form of a powerful witch.Â

~
âRex?â
He looked up quickly at the sound of your voice, you were standing there with your work in your hands and a flutter of your lashes. He chuckled at the familiar face, honeyed eyes crinkling in amusement as you gave him an innocent pout, âWhat is it today, Y/N? Are we sitting in silence or having a chat?â
He gestured to the chair in front of his desk for guests, and you practically skipped over to the seat, laying your own datapad and reports in neat stacks, âI think I just need to be. But can we put on some music?â
âDonât see why not,â Rex gave you a charming grin, one you were now able to easily return without the corners of your lips threatening to pull down. Rex put on some basic top hits radio station, putting the volume down a little low to make it blend into the background, and sharing a smile with you once more before the two of you continued to work in comfortable silence.
Itâs been about four standard months since he had given you that hug you desperately needed, since he offered you his company, his shoulder to lean on. You had taken him up on his offer about twice weekly, the two of you quickly becoming close. You shared a hug whenever he came back from a battle now, blessing the stars that he was safe, and youâd say as much whenever he boarded, âThank you for coming back to me.â
You thought that maybe the first time you said it, he was about to short circuit, his spine stiffening and biting back a choking sound. He swears it was just a bit of exhaust trapped in the ventilation system of his helmet that caused him to cough like that though, you hope he got it fixed. You enjoyed having someone like Rex around, he was kind, sympathetic, patient, a good listener, trustworthy- he made good on his word that you could come to him for anything. Moments like this were now your favorite parts of the week.
Rex enjoyed having you around so often as well. It made his heart feel whole to know how deep your trust in him went, and was always grateful for the little ways you showed your appreciation. He wondered if you were so touchy with all of your friends. If you always gave your friends warm, crushing hugs, or subtle brushes of fingertips on their wrists. If you always gave them words of affirmation, or came into their offices just to sit and share warm laughter. The first time you had kriffing thanked him for returning in one piece made him nearly combust with happiness. To know you were waiting for him to come back every time just made him...he wasnât sure, but he was hiding the widest of smiles under his bucket. He knew there were butterflies in his stomach that liked to fly up into his throat and make him trip over himself, and that your touches burned through his armor with the sweetest of fire, and that every time your smile was directed at him it shined brighter than any sun heâs ever witnessed. He knew that sharing caff with you felt like a special occasion, even if it was just made from the instant machine in the rec room and brought to his office.
âRex,â you spoke his name carefully, like you were unsure about how it was pronounced, âCan I ask you something?â
He lifted his head up to you, and he felt his chest tighten. Your gaze was down, worrying your bottom lip with your teeth, twisting your stylus between your fingers. Rex could feel his brows furrow, your mood changed on the drop of a dime, and he cleared his throat to speak low to you, âOf course. Anything.â
He held his breath as you looked up at him through heavy lashes, swallowing his butterflies down as you let out a shuddering exhale, âWhy do you care so much?â
Oh.
âUh,â Rex felt his own gaze shoot downward, suddenly finding his stack of flimsiplast very interesting, âYouâre a good friend, Y/N. A kind person. Why wouldnât I care about you?â
You blinked slowly to him, trying to catch his averted line of sight, âWell, you do a lot for me. You listen to my problems, keep me company when I need it, and I just. I donât feel like Iâve done anything to deserve it, and-â
âYou deserve everything.â
Rex had this issue where no matter how hard he tried, his butterflies made him speak. They made him say the damndest things to you, just bursting out of him in spurts, and always left him to clear it up by himself. His eyes widened at his own words, your eyes finally locking onto his, and he could feel heat rushing to his face as he stammered, âWhat I mean is, you⌠you deserve more than you think. Even if you werenât my friend, Iâd still want to extend basic kindness towards you.â
âCaptain,â you cocked a brow to him, leaning back in your chair, noticing the way his jaw flexed when you dropped his title, âYou walked me through the hardships of heartbreak. You still do, some days. Thatâs a bit more than basic kindness.â
âBecause weâre friends,â he cleared his throat, suddenly finding it difficult to look away from you now, âI mean. You see us as friends, right? Thatâs what friends do.â
You searched his gaze, bottom lip pulled between your teeth again, making Rex feel surprisingly small as you continued your staring. You hummed at him, releasing your lip, and Rex couldnât stop himself from glancing down to the reddened flesh. You leaned toward him, forearms on the desk, âBut why? We werenât close before, you kinda justâŚâ
You trailed off into a small giggle, the sound sweet, and Rex was hanging onto your every word at the edge of his seat. You looked off to the side, your own cheeks feelings warm, âYou kinda came out of nowhere. A hero, swooping in at the last second to save the maiden in need. Like in the stories I used to read as a kid.â
A hero. If it had come from anyone else, if he had read it on the holonet or seen his face on a war poster, he wouldâve scoffed and rolled his eyes. But instead it came from you, direct and to his face in the privacy of four walls, and he was melting. You looked up at him again, gaze soft, your warmth shining through as you bit back another giggle, âSorry if that's weird, or childish, but itâs true. You remind me- no, you are exactly that.â
Rex couldnât stop the wide smile that stretched over his face, it felt goofy, and toothy, but he couldnât bring himself to stop. He tried, he tried to stop, but that only made it worse, and he found himself wishing he had his helmet as he was sure his cheeks held a deep ruddy color to them.
âYouâre...you have no idea what you mean to me,â he shook his head, resting his chin in his palm to try and cover his cheshire grin as you looked at him in curious amusement, âY/N, you are such...youâre a light on this ship. All the staff, all my troopers, even our Jedi care about you. Youâre always offering your smile to us, making us feel warm even in hyperspace, and if Iâm being honest, coming back to y-â
Rex cleared his throat, cutting himself off as he found himself bearing his soul to you. He watched you closely, the way your lashes hit the tops of your cheeks as you blinked to him, the way you chewed on the plump of your pout as you waited for him to continue. He cleared his throat again, his slight stubble rubbing against the synthweave of his gloves, âAh, c-coming back aboard toâŚto see you, I mean. It just makes me feel...better.â
He finished lamely, finally gaining control of his face again and pressing his lips together into a fine line before he could spew anything else out to you. He felt like a cadet again, his heart was racing and his face was hot, and he waited for you to laugh at his silly notions. He wasnât prepared for the mist that came over your gaze, or the sniffle that accompanied it.
âYou really-â you paused to wipe away the tears already gathering atop your lashes, a thin laugh breaking through your choked words, âYouâre terrible, making me cry like this. How did a sharp edged, straight cut soldier like yourself get to be so sweet?â
âIâm...sorry?â
He was so perplexed.
You smiled through your haze, more laughter straining out, âF-for what? You just...you say all the right things, Rex.â
He didnât know what to do. He made you cry, but...you were happy about it? He froze in his seat, unsure of what to say, if he should move- should he give you a hug? Did you want a hug? Did you need to leave? Did you want to leave?
He held his breath as you pushed yourself out of the chair, walking around his desk to immediately fling your arms around his neck. You pulled him close as you leaned down into him, his face heating up even more as it was shoved into your neck, nose skimming the hairline behind your ear. He felt a shiver go down his spine as you sighed against him, your breath fanning over his neck, and he froze. What should he do with his hands?
Typically youâd both be standing, and heâd be able to return your tight hold with his arms around your back, but if he did that now then heâd be pulling you into his lap and he is not going down that rabbit hole. If he just placed them- no, then his hands would be encircling your waist, thatâs just as bad as the lap. What ifâŚ
Gingerly testing the waters, he breathed through his nose, moving slow as if heâd scare you off with the slightest surprise. He brought one hand up to sit between your shoulder blades, and that was fine. The other hand was treading new territory, coming up to the back of your scalp and threading his fingers through your hair. Your content hum would replay in his mind the rest of the day.
âRexâŚâ
That was going to replay in his mind for the rest of the week. The way you breathed his name out made him hold you even tighter, not even realizing what he was doing until you chuckled low against him, âThank you, Rex. I donât know what kind of state Iâd be in if you hadnât been there for me.â
âItâs my pleasure, Y/N,â he whispered to you, trying not to let his lips skim against your neck as he spoke, âSincerely.â
You pulled away, and he found himself missing the mild smell of your shampoo. You smiled down at him, standing with your hands behind your back and a hip jutted to the side. You seemed to be contemplating something as you kept looking off to the side, and before Rex could ask what was wrong, you had leaned down to ever so gently press your lips to the side of his temple.
âSometimes a hug doesnât say everything quite right,â you bit your lip, pushing a strand of hair out of your face as you felt your cheeks heat up again, âIf anyone deserves everything, itâs you, Captain.â
With a final smile, you walked back around to your side of the desk. You bit back a slight giggle as you saw Rex touch the side of his head where you kissed him, turning back to your work just as he looked over to you. He let out a breathy chuckle, getting back to his own work, the two of you settling back into the previous comfortable silence, the forgotten radio finishing up another song.

Character 7 good night's rest hopefully probably not.
It had been about an hour after introducing courage to the girls. Boom had explained that courage was taken in after the death of his previous owner Muriel. Boom had rather not left him with hustis as courage no longer had her to defend him nor did he have anyone left to really protect. For anyone wondering hustis eventually moved to the city abandoning their old home."that's basically what happened I just couldn't leave him there"Boom sat down on the couch eating the freshly made ramen."oh you poor thing"Fluttershy had taken to holding and petting courage. Courage was a bit hesitant but no one can resist that girl for long and he rather enjoyed being pet by such soft hands."sorry about forgetting to warn you about him I tend to be forgetful at times."Twilight was glaring at him again."well in the future maybe be a bit more careful I consider us lucky that it was just a dog this time what if it was a rabid monster we know nothing about this place!"she was clearly trying to avoid yelling and failing."fine I'll try to be a bit more informative so I'll explain quickly courage and I are the only ones who live here. Additionally the laws of physics and nature here can often change on a dime. And because this place is made from thoughts your emotions can affect how the place is."there was a brief silence between everyone as they process the information they were getting."the panic and confusion is what caused the hall to disappear just be glad it wasn't acting off of anyone's anger trust me that never ends well."spike had begun laying across the sofa as his body began to relax. "I believe Spike has the right idea. Tomorrow we're heading to a somewhat dangerous place nothing we can't handle but rest would do us good."as if reacting to his words a hall with a bed symbol over it appeared along with pinkie pie surprisingly who was leaning against the hall."this place is amazing!all the rooms look just like our own rooms back home!"pinkie was jumping in place in excitement not to mention flapping her arms all around as she spoke. surprisingly no one reacted at this I guess after the crazy day we've all had it was kind of expected at this point.
2 booms perspective )Boom had walked off from the rest of the group down a hallway with a explosion symbol. Walk down the long hallway courage in tow. Upon reaching his door with the exclamation mark he opened it. Inside was a typical bedroom. One queen size bed a desk and chair and a computer stand other than that there wasn't much in the room there was no need this wasn't his permanent home. He look down at the small dog who had already gotten in his place in the bed right at the foot of it were a comfy pillow waited him."good night courage good boy"courage had given him a slight smile. It's been about 3 years since he moved in luckily it wasn't too hard of an adjustment for him poor thing probably just didn't want to be scared anymore.'well Better get to work.'boom sat down at his desk opening the drawer inside was a small syringe filled with a golden liquid. He frowned only one vile was left in a drawer filled with empty syringes. He slowly grabbed the syringe and lifted it up to his arm hesitating a moment .'is this really how I want to spend the rest of my life. Relying on this damn serum to avoid becoming a....'He shook his head."no only a little bit longer then I don't have to use it anymore I'll pick some up when I see the princess."he had to tell himself this to remind himself that he wasn't reliant on taking this once a week. Boomlord plunge the syringe into his arm he didn't even bother to look for a vain he knew exactly where it was. Suddenly he was far more awake as a surge of energy went through him then calm."well I don't think I'm sleeping tonight."he then looked at his collection of old books and comics and grab the Deadpool comic off the top shelf.'just for tonight I don't see the harm.
3 Twilight laid in her bed tossing and turning deep nightmare of what have happened earlier in the day had appear. The rage the anger the guilt. there was no nightmare Moon or Luna here this was all her. She of course woke up in a cold sweat."shit!"she grabbed her head and held it for a moment as if letting go would cause her head to fall off before finally coming down. She gazed her surrounding ,if not for the void outside her window she would have assumed she was back home safe and sound. She laid back resting her head on the pillow thinking about the weird guy she had met.'what kind of person did I meet today what kind of person just comes out of nowhere and acts as if he does it every other week what kind of person just results to violence and then just talks about it. Is he just crazy or am I just...'she stopped for a minute blowing some hair out of her face .' I mean I guess he's okay enough he's been rather reasonable but I'm still not sure who he is or if he can be trusted.'she wrapped her fingers against each other.'still for a weirdo I guess I can deal with them who knows maybe this will be enlightening'she then found herself slowly reentering sleep she dozed off this time no dream at all haunted her. And even if they did it was nothing compared to what she was going to have to face tomorrow or whenever they wake up there's not really a sun there.

Amphibia Reviewcaps:Â Scavenger Hunt/ The Plantars Check In
KEITH DAVID IS HERE! KEITH DAVID IS HERE AND NOT IN SHADOWY STINGER BITS BUT FULL CHARACTER! And okay other stuff happened I guess. Anne deals with her insecurity over her girlfriend being way more smart and acomplished than her, then the Plantars meet King Keith David, followed by Sprig reinacting the plot of Home Alone 2 mixed with a bit of Blank Check. You know that forgetable disney movie about the white dumbass who uses his computer skillz to get rich and has to deal with the mob.. I assume. I really have no idea exactly what blank check was about and neither do you. KEITH DAVID, under the cut.Â
Scavenger Hunt
And with Marcyâs big intro out of the way weâre back to simplier problem of the week episodes, though this one does lead into the next which does have some solid plot progression, and the new setting and fresh injection of Marcy mean they do feel a bit newer after the road episodes. Like a good road trip after all that time you finally get to see the sights, enjoy the place and just relax. And also eat because your usally hungry when you first arrive, which is what the plantars and new addition Marcy are doing to start. Marcyâs treating, because sheâs friends iwth the king and as we learn next episode the king gives his friends acess to the royal treasury because heâs a seemingly nice dude. Again, more on that in a minute. While Hop Pop marvels at Marcyâs smarts and analytics, a messag efrom the king arrives.. and yes I too have âA MESSAGE FROM THE KING A MESSAGE FROM THE KINGâ from hamilton in my head right now.Â
Turns out the King likes to send Puzzle grams, basically sending marcy on scavenger hunts to tell her something because their both massive dorks. And it is taking ALL my willpower not to jump right ot the keith david of things, but for the sake of profesionalism I will stay here. So our party splits up: Marcy, Anne and Sprig go off to solve the puzzle and see the town while Hop Pop ends up staying because you can get free shit the more you eat, which yeah is a nice thing and all but is usually not worth what you spend. But itâs not his dime so fair enough. The kingâs toiletâs are probably gold with gems and the softest seats in the land. I mean if I were king of the world Iâd want the best toilet in the world. Iâd also install free health care and other good stuff, but Iâd expect a really nice crapper as one of the perks of the job.Â
Anyway the hop pop plot really is just him eating a lot to get free stuff and showing up at the end , so iâll focus ont he main plot which is pretty standard: Anne is insecure about how smart Marcy is, and TRIES to out marcy her in solving the puzzle, while befrending various people: Resucing a girlâs cat/caterpillar from a tree, befreinding an old lady and doing her nails, and then bonding with the gnatcho cart lady.. which made me want nachos bad, who enocourage a dispondent anne to be herself and try anyway. But yeah Marcy suceeds instead, Anne gets depressed, then Anne tries TOO Hard on the last clue when Marcy is stuck and ends up in the sewer with the alligators.. which unlike real life sewer gators, were put there on purpose by marcy to eat garbage when she redid the sewer system.. because of course she did sheâs the best. Itâs a really nice gag. They escape the gator when the various people Anne helped form a chain, along with an exasperated hop pop and Polly. Then sprig blabs about Anneâs insecurity, and Marcy comforts her, pointing out that while sheâs a genius and what not.. she dosenât.. get people. Anne does, which.. I found a nice twist. The first thing she did,g etting the cat, made me think âoh their going to go with her physical skillsâ.. but instead in a nice twist that made me like this episode more, itâs her heart. And itâs not something they pulled out of thin air: While it hasnât really come into play a lot this season, last season was all about Anne slowly connecting with the town and being suprisingly good with people.. she can be blunt, dosenât think things through.. but she does have empathy, problem solving and a desire to genuinely help people who need it. Itâs a hard trait to learn and itâs one she does with natural ease. Itâs a nice bit of showing her character and what sheâs good at. Also the message turns out to be âbring the plantarsâ which.. yeah the second the first clue was bring, even without next episodes description, I couldâve guessed. And they close the episode as all episodes should close.. feeding nachos to a sewer gator.Â
Final Thoughts I: As you could tell by how easily I sped through it, the episode was...eh. Itâs not bad, but no episode of the series has been truly terrible. It honestly, and this kind of complaint is overused, feels like filler. And granted I rarely watch anime, I know cartoons work different.. but this episode feels like itâs just there to provide more Marcy before we focus primarily on the Plantars again, and before the plot turns them against her. Which isnât a bad thing mind and sheâs great as she was last week. The problem is Anne. Her feeling down about herself, while a normal human emotion.. just dosenât jibe with her normal brand of overconfidence. Itâs not entirely out of the blue for her not ot feel as smart as marcy, itâs just set up poorly. We couldâve easily used a flashback or something to the human world to help make it feel like a more longstanding issue, than one that just crops up because Polly said a thing after a full episode of her being totally fine with Marcy being way smarter than her. Even the intro has her entirely fine with it. It wouldâve flowed better if she played off she was fine, but secretly was trying to one up her and did feel dumber versus that being spelled out so early, as it woudlâve fit more with the character. So yeah this oneâs more just forgetable, a stop gap between two plot important episodes. And I donât mind catching our breath after the last episode given it was a huge one what with introducing a new major character and a new setting and having a lot of action set pieces, I just know the show can do that BETTER, as seen with HandY Anne following up , if a year after, from the emotionally draining season 1 finale, they just.. didnât this time and it just flopped a bit, but still had enough nice moments and good bits to make it still enjoyable.Â
Thatâs something I do have to give the show credit on as I have been hard on it, as iâve said reviwing more forgetable episodes is hard: Most shows donât make it out of season 1 without at least one terrible episode. OK KO had âLetâs Not Be Skeletonsâ, Ducktales had âThe Beagle Birthday Massacreâ (And iâm a huge fan of Lena as a character, just to be clear, her debut episode was terrible for other reasons) , Steven Universe had Arcade Mania, Adventure Time had âFreak Cityâ and Legend of Korra had âThe Spirit of Compettitonâ.. and really the whole love triangle plot but thatâs a story for another day.. all of these are really..e xcept arcade mania that oneâs just dull and pointless. But iâm not: My point is itâs still a really good sign the show hasnât really flopped over in the span of two seasons, with even the annoying quarallers pass still having some really good stuff to it. I may be critical, because as a critic thatâs my job no one pays me for, but I do love this show and want to make it clear itâs still excellent. Iâd rather watch this episode again than any episode of âHoopsâ.. seriously I have no interest in that show and I question why Jake Johnston thought signing on for it was a good idea. Then again, Keith David was in this
And this
And BOTH of these
So I canât blame Jake for wanting an easy paycheck when Screen Legend Keith David has done far worse for one. Speaking of Keith David....
The Plantars Check InÂ
ITâS TIME.Â
Weâve had a sample of keith david with the omnoius end from last week but now we get the full package. And iâve made no secret how much I absolutley love Keith David or how excited I was to see him joint he cast. The main is a voice acting and regular acting legend. Sure he usually does bit parts, but he does the hell out of them.Â
The man also has a longer history in disney than I ever realized. While I knew he played Goliath and Dr. Facilier, I had no idea just how much minor voice work heâs done for disney over the decades, doing a LOT of minor roles during the 90â˛s and even vocing Mufasa in âHouse of Mouseâ, subbing for James Earl Jones which.. yeah if anyoneâs the next Jamers Earl Jones, itâs Keith. Heâs the king of making a meal out of side rolls and on the ocasions he gets a big one he makes a damn buffet of it, as seen with Gargoyles and Community.Â
youtube
So yeah, I love the guy and was excited for his first full apperance and pleasantly suprised. We open at what looks like a comibation of the temple of time and Hyrule Castle for Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and I swear thatâs what their going for with the background music here. Anyways after Lady Oliva tries to keep things formal, and reveals King Andrias has been king for over a thousand years, which makes things even more interesting, he .. happily hops off the throne, gives the Plantars a friendly greeting and then a bear hug. I was expecting him to be stern yet nice, for now, but this is a nice change of pace and iâts shown by the way Olvia acts towards this behavior, wishing heâd be proper because âMost unorthodoxâ and all that monocle popping nonsense, that this is normal for him. So itâs not ENTIRELY an act for their benefit. He is apparently nice to his immediate subjects, vistors and especially Marcy. Itâs also lovely to see Keith David play such a diffrent character from his usual villian, stoic badass or hilarious grandpa rolls, instead playing a cheerful and boisterous king. He honestly reminds me a lot fo River from star vs the forces of evil. Which by the way I also love Alan Tuduk and regret not bringing him up in either review riverâs been in so far.Â
Anyway, we then get some more plot stuff as he meets anne, and we get a nice bit of him doing the âthumb of approvalâ and marveling at anneâs awkawrd fistbump in response. But itâs down to buisness, he wants to send his loyal knight and new friend he just met home, but needs the box. While anne reveals she donât got it, with Hop Pop acting nervous as he realizes âoh shit, maybe lying to my surrogate grandaughter about something this important when weâre ont he way to a place where people will naturally want ot see the thing, and STILL not telling her after meeting Marcy and knowing shâed want to know about it too has started to backfire!â And yeah while he has sympathetic motives, and clearly knows SOMETHING about the box, and I supsect King Keith David does too but give me a second, his not telling Anne what he did at any time is only going to make it harder to trust him later, especially if Marcy ends up betraying them. He also notices something I actually failed to notice , as did Anne: The colorful stones on the calamity box are drained of color. So the Kingâs going to have to reserach this for a bit, with Marcy helping obviously and since Anneâs usless at research, the king instead happily treats the plantars to a vacation on him while they sort thigns out: A stay at the nicest hotel in the city, on his dime, and acess to his royal credit card, which given heâs king of everything means he just gave them the unlimited funds code.Â
Before we move on, my thoughts on the king: Heâs hard to read. I do think heâs genuinely that nice a person.. but he CLEARLY has a dark side, having subjugated the toads and the frogs, which had to have happened under him as heâs first in his line and both remember the status quo as only such. Hop Pop dosenât even question the way things are or one god king ruling over all for over a thousand years. The question is did he do so because he didnât know better, because he thought he had to, or becauseÂ
I do nât know what thatâs from but expect me to be using it a LOT from now on. My point is itâs hard to tell what his game is here. He could be a cruel asshole masquerading as a fun loving king on the service to sugarcoat his shadier actions.. or he could be a well intentioned extermist, doing awful things for what he sees as the greater good and possibly having lost the plot, or his empathy over thousands of years. Or he genunley could have no idea what heâs planning is bad and see no harm in it due to a different set of morals, again due to being immortal. Thereâs a LOT of intresting directions they can go with this character and iâm curious to see just what sort of vilian, or possibly good guy all along though I doubt it, he will be and given both grime, more recently iâll admit but still, and sasha have been complex villians instead of one dimensional assholes, the show will no doubt give us something spectacular. HOpefully iâm not tempting fate but if I am, screw it, iâm rolling those dice. This is going to be godo and I canât wait. Itâll also be intresting to see if he genuinely values marcy or is putting on the good king act and puzzles and all that to manipulate her. After all weâve seen with Sasha that sheâs easily manipulated, as far as we can tell, and sees this all as a game.. itâd be easy enough to lead her along by playing int othe genre and her desires to get her to play his game the way he needs her to. Though itâs also a question of if Marcy will see it or back the wrong side... though she MIGHT. while she isnât great with people, she does know games and half the time a benevolent ally will turn out to be a dick in sheeps clothing. Though iâm hoping that isnât the case for Marcy. But weâll see..
Anyways with the first third or so of the episode down, the Plantars Check in, TITLE DROP, and Polly, Anne and Hop Pop all put on comfy robes and relax, while Sprig being sprig wants to go exploring though hop pop refuses to leave him wiht the card because of course he does. And honestly having done a few road trips myself.. yeah usually when you get back to the hotel first you want to just relax and crash, maybe go out for dinner or something with your friends, which they already did ahead of time, and recharge before doing allt he fun vacation stuff. Though I also relate to sprig as I too have been in hotels with arcades and pools from time to time as a kid and a teen and wanted to go do the fun stuff while everyoneâs tired. Thankfully I also liked to read or play my various game consoles, from the game boy advance up to the switch on my most recent vacations,so I understand his restlessness. The rest of the episode goes about how youâd expect, with Sprig taking the card once hteir asleep and adventuring around and getting into various hilarious one off gags via montage, before loosing the card and fighting over it with a Bellhop Named Belle, played byt he always wonderful and always talented Krstien Schal.. about two episodes late for the gravity falls homage but never too late to do some voice acting. Sprig gets the card thanks to futurama caffine bullet time, saves paige and then saves her from firing by talking like a rich kid asshole to save paiges job before collapsing and being woken by everyone else wanting to go do fun shit.Â

Final Thoughts 2: This one was better. While again I sped through the recap section this time.. it was funny> While the plot was a simple: kid sneaks out and does something heâs not supposed to yet and gets into trouble and ironic ending and all that, itâs funny enough to be enjoyable, Kristin is game as always, and the gag of Sprig using the card to wave off the snooty man at the counter is great. While most of the meat of hte episode is with the king at the start, the rst of it is still an enjoyable come down episode after the plot heavy first third of this one and marcy at the gates and does the job way better thant he previous episode. While it doenât have a lot of tie to character or what not, it dosenât WASTE any either. I didnât realize till this episode that while sprig certainly hasnât been unterutlized, he really hasnât had his own episode this season, sharing Quarallerâs Pass with poly and only having subplots in âA Caravan Named Desireâ and âMarcy at the Gatesâ. Here he gets a plot to himself and while it does nothing for his overal character, itâs entertaining enough, with some great gags like the caffine bullet time, the aformentioned rich people gag and the hair bit being the best âNow to put on my hat!â. It just lets the character loose to have a fun side story. See I can dog on an episode for WASTING a good opprotunity, even if I understand the stress of production and what not.. but I wonât dog one for just having fun and letting a character have the limelight if itâs still entertaining which this was. The problem with say âScavenger Huntâ, âThe Ballad of Hopidiah Plantarâ, âA Caravan Named Desireâ and âThe Ballad of Hopidiah Plantarâ is that while their not BAD episodes, they had far more potential. This one knows itâs basically home alone 2 meets blank check, but actually entertaining, and justh as fun with it. Is it hte best episode ever? Probably not. But was it fun and a nice change of pace, as well as relatable to me and thus giving me a bit of the warm fuzzies, especially in this hellscape of our lord 2020? Absolutley. That does it for this week. if you liked this review iâve reveiwed the rest of the season so far , just check the Disney tab on my blog, along with many other shows, and iâll be covering the show weekly for the rest of the season, along with Ducktales when it comes back next month, so follow if you want more of that and random reblogs and such. You can also shoot me an ask if you have any things you want my opinon on, any episodes you want to request or you can direct message me to outright comission an episode of any aimated show for me to review for 5 bucks a review. Either way, till we meet again, bwahahahahaha.Â

ITâS HERE!
Hey everyone! Itâs finally happening. The long awaited Olivia x MC fit is happening. Iâll leave the rest of my thoughts as the bottom as not to bore you, but Iâll put one tiny thing here: thereâs actually no Olivia in this chapter. I know, I know! Sheâs the whole reason youâre here. But I had to do a chapter without her to set up for something youâll see in a future chapter. I promise, itâll prove worth your wait. Anyways, without further ado, letâs get to it!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Paige couldnât remember a time in her life when she wasnât working towards something. She busted her ass all through highschool, working her way into a scholarship at a decent university. From there, she had concocted a simple, five-step plan:
-Graduate with honors
-Get into a fantastic business school
-Get an amazing, ultra-high paying job
-Pay off debt
-Buy a good house for her parents, and live out the rest of her life comfortably.
But no. Nearly a month after she graduated from college, her dad got diagnosed. As he spent more and more time in the hospital, the bills rolled in. Charge upon charge upon charge, until Paigeâs mother had spent up their retirement funds and was looking into getting a second job. So, naturally, Paige stepped up. She got a job working at a tiny bar downtown, and sent her every spare dime to her family, rooming with strangers, because all her friends still lived back home in California.
And then, just as Paige thought her existence couldnât get any bleaker, it did.
She was sent one final charge, then never any again.
After that, she threw herself into working extra hours at the bar, no longer having the energy to look into jobs anywhere else. For two years, she worked and slept, worked and slept. The only person she ever really talked to was Daniel, a friend who was good for cracking jokes and aimless chatter, but not ideal as emotional support. So, completely on her own, she did her best to heal. She cried till she couldnât, screamed, cried some more, and did anything she could to try and lessen the complete suffocation that was her grief. Each day, she did whatever she could to wake up feeling a bit lighter, until she felt almost nothing at all. It took two years, but she was finally starting to feel like a person again.
Thatâs when she met three of the five people who were going to change her life forever.
That day, it was just the men who happened to be in the restaurant. This did make sense, because it was a bachelor party, after all. Not that that was easy to tell, just looking at them. Their clothes ranged from a simple denim-and-white-jeans look to a three piece suit, leather shoes, and a pocket square. Honestly, who still wore pocket squares? Paige shuddered just looking at it. It seemed that she was dealing with a typical group of douchey, overgrown frat boys. It would suck while she was serving them, but usually at least one of them would remember to leave a decent tip. She sighed and strode over, pulling out her pad.
âHi, what can I-â She broke off for a tiny moment before resuming. âWhat can I get for you today?â Trying to cover her tracks, she flashed a bright smile.
The reason she had broken off was sitting there, watching her. He wasnât dressed particularly flashily, in his garnet sweater and khakis, but he had an air of quiet importance about him, something almost noble. His posture was perfect, his hair done with not a strand out of place, a neatly shaved face, a perfectly straight and clean collar. It was the little things about him, things that one didnât typically find in a crappy downtown bar, that made Paige even warier. He grinned a small, curious grin at her. Before she could respond, the man in the suit began to speak.
âSo firstly, Iâd like to ask about your wine. Iâm assuming thereâs a separate list?â Mr. Denim and a (quite cute, actually) guy in a black button down traded amused glances over Sir Suitâs shoulder.
âSorry, we donât. We have a good selection of beer an-â He cut her off with a horrified look. Sheâd never seen such a prim rage before; she had to stop herself from snorting.
âThereâs nothing else? Iâve never even heard of some of these labels before! Iâd think Iâd like to speak to your mana-â
âTariq.â
The sweatered man, the quiet one, lay a hand on Mr. Suitâs shoulder. His voice was warm, strong, and seemed to contain just a hint of some foreign accent that Paige couldnât place. He smiled apologetically at her.
âThatâs completely fine. Weâll take a bottle of your finest whiskey, and four glasses.â
âGreat. Will you be having anything to eat with that?â She was making some strangely intense eye contact with The Sweater (sheâd have to try and catch his name) when Tariq cut in obliviously. She was really starting to hate this guy.
âYes, weâll each take a filet mignon, medium rare, prepared with a bearnaise sauce.â
Paige blinked. The man smiled blandly at her as though this was a perfectly normal request.
âSir, the closest thing we have to a filet mignon is the deluxe burger.â
Now it was Tariqâs turn to blanch in horror. âBurger?â
âSounds great! Weâll take four.â Mr. Denim cut in, shooting a glare Tariqâs way.
âRight then. Iâll go put your order in, and Iâll be right back with that whiskey.â
She turned and made her way back to the kitchen, trying to fight back the smile that threatened to take over her face. Taking out Tariq, this seemed like a group of pretty decent guys. Usually, she expressed nothing more than a vague sort of interest in customers, a kind of unattached curiosity. But listening to them laughing and yelling, she couldnât help but to want to pull up a chair and join them.
Sighing, she pulled out their glasses and whiskey. She was putting in their order when she felt eyes on her. Without moving, she peered out of the corner of her eye.
The three friends were talking, except for the quiet one. His eyes traced the curve of her neck, and her spine tingled with awareness of his every move. She arched her form just a bit, trying to be as subtle as she could, and his eyes slipped lower.
Just as she was about to turn, his friend elbowed him. She couldnât make out what they were saying, but the quiet one smiled and turned his attention back to the group. She didnât miss how his eyes fluttered back for just a half second, darkening, before he focused back in on the boothâs conversation.
She sighed, and grabbed the whiskey. Oh, well. This was going to be a boring night, but hopefully, in terms of tip, a fruitful one.
* * *
âExcuse me?â
Paige turned to find the sweatered man from before.
âI think weâre about to head out, and I didnât want to do so without apologizing.â
The bar had emptied out completely, and the two were completely alone. Sweaterâs friends were jostling around out front.
âApologizing?â She frowned. âFor what?â
âWell, I know we kept you late, and my friends can be prettyâŚâ He paused. âDemanding.â
âDemanding, huh? Well, it was nothing I canât handle. Iâm used to it by now.â
âWell, be that as it may, Iâd still like to apologize. Weâre about to head out to a club right near here. Could I buy you a drink?â
âWhich club are you going to?â
âOh, wellâŚâ He winced. âWe were actually hoping that you could help with that. Weâre not from around here.â
âIn that case, I know just where you should go.â She scanned him with a critical eye before making a decision. âYou donât seem like the kind of guy that would particularly enjoy some wild party spot. Thereâs a great little secret cove right near here you might like.â
He grinned in relief. âThat sounds amazing. Iâm getting just a bit tired of the traditional bachelor party antics. Why donât you lead the way?â
âSure, that sounds awesome! Let me just get out of this uniform, and we can get going.â She turned to go, then stopped short. âBefore we go, can I get your name? Iâm Paige.â
She turned to offer her hand, expecting a firm shake. To her surprise, he leaned down and actually kissed her knuckles. An honest to god bow-and-kiss. As soon as heâd done it, his eyes widened in embarrassment before shrinking into a wince. âSorry, thatâs an, ah, custom. Where I come from. Itâs tradition. I just- just forgot you donât do it here. Iâm Liam.â He was clearly quite mortified, but Paige smiled. She thought it cute, and made her feel oddly regal. There was something so gentle in the gesture, it was almost reverent. Sweet. Grinning, Paige ducked back into the backroom, changing into an emerald-green dress she kept in her bag. She paused for a moment to check her reflection, fluffing out her hair and dress. Confident, she followed Liam into the night air.
As soon as she stepped out, the first thing she heard was: âDaaang! The waitress is hot!â, quickly followed by a more earnest: âThat uniform didnât do you justice.â Before she could respond, Liam stepped forward.
âHey. Paige is a guest among us, and I doubt she appreciates you commenting on her appearance like that.â
If he didnât before, he now had her full trust.
She was pretty used to receiving comments like that by now, and it didnât particularly bother her. At least these guys didnât seem to have any cruel intent. She got much worse in clubs or on the street. But it was rare to see another man stick up for her like that. Liam barely even knew her, and yet he was ready to call out his friends for her. Instantly, she found she liked him even more.
The guys stuck their head down and muttered apologies. They seemed sincere enough, and clearly eager to earn a fresh start, so Paige let it go.
âSo, the waitress is coming with us?â Mr. Denim piped up, looking Paige over.
âActually, weâre going with her. Sheâs picked out our next destination.â
âSo sheâs our tour guide now.â Denim raised his brow. He didnât seem malicious, per se, just skeptical.
âHey, Paige very graciously agreed to show us around, so play nice.â Liam turned to her. âLead the way!â
âIâd love to, but can I get the rest of you guysâ names first? I canât be referring to you three as âyou thereâ this whole night.â
âIâm Maxwell! Maxwell Beaumont.â Button Down grinned and shook her hand enthusiastically.
âIâm Drake Walker.â Denim stepped forward and also shook her hand, though much less enthusiastically.
âGreat. And youâre Tariq, right?â She pointed at the third man, who was smiling at her in a way that did actually make her just a tad uncomfortable. He nodded, his smile growing.
âAwesome. Letâs get going!â She spun around, and they followed her into the night.
  * * *
They emerged from a small swath of greenery into a beautiful little cove. The starlight shone on the ocean, and the whole place seemed mysterious and magical. Like anything could happen.
âWe should build a bonfire!â Drake looked happier than heâd been all night.
âI am will not be engaging in manual labor.â Tariq looked like he was about to throw up.
âI forgot who I was talking to. What I meant was, Iâm going to go build a bonfire.â He practically skipped off. Paige couldâve sworn she heard a giggle. The men turned to take in their surroundings.
âThis place is awesome! Skinny dippiiiiiing!â
âKeep your pants on, Maxwell.â
Liam turned to Paige as the other two bickered. âThank you for taking us here, Paige. I can tell the guys are enjoying themselves already.â
âForget your friends. Do you like it here?â
âI love it.â He was completely sincere.
âThis is my secret spot, so Iâm really trusting you here.â She was teasing, but he looked her directly in the eye as he responded. âI will do everything I can to be worthy of that trust.â
There was a moment there, where he held her gaze. But he looked away and turned his eyes to the sky as he spoke.
âThereâs only one problem. How am I supposed to buy you that drink now?â Heâd made his tone light as meringue, but there was a tiny crease between his brows.
âI donât know. Maybe youâll just keep owing me.â
âSeems fair enough to me.â They stood together for a second, until Drake called out.
âGuys! The fireâs ready!â
He beamed as he motioned for them to sit. His proud beam suddenly reminded Paige of a particularly peppy golden retriever. She stifled a giggle as she tucked her feet under her.
âHey, can I ask you guys something?â She had grabbed one of the  beers Drake had insisted they get from a convenience store on the way. She sipped from the bottle, trying to appear casual. Maxwell looked up from one of the pop-tarts he had picked up. âWhatâs up?â
âWell, whatâs up with you guys? Whatâs your deal?â
As soon as she asked the question, the atmosphere shifted noticeably. The air grew thick with tension. The boys traded nervous glances, each one visibly uncomfortable. Finally, Liam spoke.
âGuys, itâs fine. She deserves to know.â
âAre you sure?â Drakeâs puppy-like grin had vanished, replaced with a look of guarded skepticism.
âPositive.â Liam nodded, and they all turned to her.
âOkay. Paige, thereâs something you should know about us.â
âAlrightâŚâ It suddenly occurred to her that she was on a remote island with four strange men who were now all staring at her, and why did she think this was a good idea? She tried to tamp down her growing panic.
âAs you know, weâre not from here. But where we are from, specifically, is... Cordonia.â
âOkay. And this is a secret why, exactly?â
Liam shifted again. Clearly, there was more.
âWell, weâre not just tourists. I mean, weâre not really, ah, average citizens.â
Hm. Well, that wasnât too surprising. Liamâs controlled manner, the way Maxwell kept looking over his shoulder, Tariqâs pocket square. But what, exactly, did this all mean? They were either spies, mega rich, or criminals. She waited for them to go on.
âWhat I mean by that is⌠well, we may have left some things out in our introduction. Drake really is Drake Walker, but the rest of us are different.â
Maxwell piped up. âIâm Sir Maxwell Percival Beaumont. Of Ramsford.â
âI am Lord Tariq Nadar, of Larada.â He bowed and leered at Paige in a way that caused her stomach to lurch suddenly.
âAnd I am Prince Liam Cicero Constantine Rhys, prince of Cordonia.â
Prince of Cordonia. The way he kissed her hand. The way the other men seemed so keenly aware of his every command. His cordial behavior. She had been flirting with a prince. An heir, she guessed.
But, if he was an heir, then that could mean-
Oh, God.
âWhose bachelor party is this?â
To her horror, Liam raised his hand tentatively.
âItâs mine.â
Shit! Ew, ew, ew. Her opinion of him dropped right down to the ground. Of course he was fucking engaged. He had been flirting with her, checking her out, and he was engaged! Fuck that, fuck him. She hadnât even been that into him, so any disappointment she may have felt was swallowed by anger and disgust. She was almost ready to leave when he jumped in, probably sensing her rage.
âIâm not engaged. I mean, I will be, but I donât actually have a fiancĂŠ yet.â
Oh. She lowered herself back onto the log, smoothing her pinched features.
âBut wait. That doesnât make any sense. Why have a bachelor party if youâre not even engaged yet?â
âThatâs what you're concerned about? Not the nobility thing? I mean, I would- ow! Drake!â Drake elbowed Maxwell into silence before turning to Paige to explain.
âLiamâs at the age where itâs finally time to pick a future queen. The social season begins the day after tomorrow, and by the end of it, Liamâs gonna have a bride. They try to win the favor of the king and queen, catch Liamâs eye, demonstrate their queenly abilities through a series of competitions, blah blah blah. Weâre throwing a bachelor party now because the next oneâll basically just be a press event with a bunch of nobles he barely knows.â
âOh.â It was all she could manage to say. What the hell was she supposed to say? This was a huge bomb to just drop on her casually.
âI hope you donât think weâre trying to fool you. If that is the case, itâs completely understandable-â
âI believe you.â Oddly enough, she knew they werenât lying. Somehow, in her bones, she just knew. These were genuine nobles, ones sheâd just happened to somehow convince to spend the night out together. Her, the broke, tired waitress. Intellectually, she knew this was an absolutely wild and preposterous thing she was doing, but emotionally, that just wouldnât register. This felt right, like an evening out with three old friends and one Tariq.
But then again, this was different for them. They werenât used to spending time with people like her. She was suddenly keenly aware of her own casual behavior, how sheâd treated them like any old group of people. They werenât. She started to gather up her things, fussing with her bag. She should leave them. Why would they want to spend time with someone like her?
âDoes this mean I should have been curtseying? Bowing? Using your proper titles?â
âWell, personally, I wouldnât have minded if you had-â
âShut up, Tariq.â Maxwell twisted towards her. âThis night has turned out to be awesome. Youâve turned out to be pretty awesome. And it doesnât have to end! Letâs stay out! Just keep thinking of us as regular tourists. Donât go.â
âI-â She stopped. âOkay. Iâm staying.â
Her answer seemed to have surprised her as much as it did them. But she meant it, truly. She was having fun, and as weird as this night had turned out to be, she felt like she had made friends. Real friends, not work ones. This night would become a cool story she told at parties, and these people would become ones sheâd wonder about and obsessively google for years to come, she was sure. So she didnât leave. She sat with them, and it was one of the best nights sheâd spent in a very long time.
* * *
âPaige! Wait up!â Paige turned to find Maxwell running after her. Her face split into a surprised grin. âMaxwell! What are you doing here?â He bounded up with a bright look about him. âIâm here for you! The plane leaves in like half an hour, and I wanted to catch you before we left.â
It was the morning after the bachelor party, and Paige was trudging to work. The sidewalk was choked with people rushing from place to place, and Maxwell was struggling to hold his ground.
âAnd why did you need to catch me, exactly?â Surely, from the beam on his face, he wasnât just delivering a lost earring? Hope started to tickle at her insides, though what it was for, she had no idea.
âI wanted to make an offer. Obviously, itâs totally cool if you want to say no, and thereâs no pressure or anything, but I had to ask.â
âOkayâŚâ What was he doing?
âCome with us.â Her expression mustâve been absolutely shocked, and he hurried on upon seeing it.
âLiam looked really happy last night. Like, uncharacteristically happy and smiley. And you seem really cool, so I got to thinking. You could come with us. Youâd be sponsored by House Beaumont, and youâd have a real shot at it! It wouldnât be easy, since youâre not technically nobility, and House Beaumont is kind of-â he stopped himself. âUm, I mean, it would be hard. Is what Iâm saying. But cool! Fun! Are you in?â
âSorry, what is âitâ, exactly?â
âOh, yeah, shoot. Liamâs hand in marriage!â
Liamâs hand. In marriage. The sidewalk seemed to spin. She liked Liam just fine, but marriage? There was no way. She knew it, deep down in her soul. She wasnât going to marry him, and she never would.
She glanced back over her shoulder, back at the bar. The whole place seemed grubby and hollow. Daniel was wiping away at the counter, a faraway expression on his face. He was dreaming of an out. They had dreamed of that out together, on mornings like this.
Paige pictured elegant palaces, glamorous parties, beautiful people. She imagined dancing the night away, drunk on champagne and laughter. She imagined stolen corridor kisses and secret rendezvous in lavish gardens.
She turned back to Maxwell.
âIâll meet you back here in twenty minutes. Iâve got some packing to do.â
Son that was the first chapter! Itâs out a bit later than Iâd like, but itâs out! Sorry again about the Olivia thing. I promise, sheâll be a key character in chapter two.Â
Iâm really new to publishing my stuff, so if you have any tips or suggestions, please let me know!Â

Why Dads Suck
Spencer x OC Aundreya
Masterlist | Series Masterlist
(This is my gif so please give credit if used)
Summary: Partially inspired by 4x7 Memoriam. When Aundreya goes with Spencer to talk to his father, she snaps. Story six.
Category: Some angst, some fluff.
Warnings: Cussing. Talk of past abuse.
Word Count: 6.2k
âListen to me, you worthless piece of shit.â
That was a sentence that I weighted very seriously. I cussed casually in conversation and way too much in my internal dialogue, sometimes I said it just to get peopleâs attention or stress the situation, but I rarely said it in a meaningful, hurtful, way. But in that situation, I was aiming to be way more than just hurtful.
# # # # # # # # # # # # #
Over the past 14 months, I allowed myself to care. I donât know what got into me, but it happened. I actually started to care for the people that I worked with. I always faked that to their faces because I wasnât a complete cold-hearted bitch, and Iâm not saying that I never cared about them, Iâm just saying that now I care-cared about them. Like, it was no longer âhey Iâm glad youâre not deadâ, but instead was like âhey Iâm genuinely concerned for your mental and emotional well-beingâ.
And it terrified me.
When I first hit the streets, I was determined to keep a hold on my humanity. Soon that proved too difficult and my new mission was to look at everyone like a chess piece; some more useful than others but all disposable in the end if they could benefit the long-term survival of the king. That mission continued in prison and became my new everyday mindset, one that followed me into the FBI. So when I realized that that mindset, the entire foundation of my existence and survival for the past 11 years, was dissolving, and there was nothing I could do about it (Iâd tried but it was a futile effort and I knew it), I was terrified. And I felt like I was falling apart.
In BAU profiler terms, that would be considered my stressor. What followed would be considered my trigger.

Spencer was going to visit his dad.
He and I had grown very close over the course of those 14 months, and I wouldâve considered him the closest person to me (with the exception of my mom and sister) ever. He even overpowered Deen and Sydney in my mind. But I guess those two were more of a âloyalty-to-the-end-as-a-means-of-survivalâ type thing, instead of just simply âfriendsâ.
I told him the most out of anyone on the team, and overall just felt like he wouldnât judge me, which was a complete 180 considering how we started. I just felt like he understood me in a way that I hadnât experienced, like he understood the roots of who I was, not just who I was in relation to what Iâd done.
We even had a couple agreements.
The first was that I was going to make him more âculturally-adequateâ while he was going to make me more âeducationally-adequateâ. That took form in a book swap. I would provide him with all of my favorite and popular books (seriously, who doesnât know the Cullens), and he would provide me with all of the profiling, math, history, engineering, psychology, sociology, chemistry, and philosophy books heâd read, along with any other fascinating topics heâd found in paperback form. We would either swap on the jet, or heâd come over to my apartment to read. Weâd tried doing it at his apartment once, but I didnât bring enough books, so it was just easier for him to be near my library. It also occasionally took form in a tv/movie swap. I would force him to watch some of my favorite shows or movies from my childhood like âSupernaturalâ and âThe Hunger Gamesâ among others, and he forced me to watch âDoctor Whoâ and âStar Trekâ. This we always did at his place, as to not get bored of my place. It also worked out well because I wasnât really allowed to go out much, and he just didnât want to go out much.
The second was âjet talkâ. Whenever Reid got going on one of his rants, and the information wasnât dire to the situation or necessary for understanding, I would just interrupt him and say âjet talkâ. It was my way of letting him know that he was rambling and needed to get to the point, but that he could tell me all of that extra information on the jet. Iâd become his new info outlet that he got to share all of those mind-boggling stats with, without being judged or feeling like he was on a time crunch. I had to smile the other day when he started going down that path and he stopped himself saying, â... it was an ancient ritual started by the Mayans in 500 AD, Iâll skip over all the jet talk, but the main purpose was âŚâ It left me feeling gooey for the rest of the day.
So yeah, weâd grown pretty close, and I would say that I was becoming very protective of him, especially when it came to personal threats heâd already overcome and shouldnât have to deal with again.
Like his father.
Which was why I was completely against the idea when Spencer suggested it.
âI have to talk to him, I have to know what happened,â he pleaded.
âI understand that, but why does it have to be like this? Why does it have to be you?â I countered. Iâd suggested that he stay with either myself, Rossi, or Morgan, while the other two went to talk to that asshat for him.
âI know this case better than any of you. I have to be there.â I looked over to Morgan and Rossi for help, but they were staying completely indifferent, not willing to challenge or support either side. Spencerâs eyes were begging me to agree with him.
I sighed. I hadnât realized our volume had risen until I brought my voice back down, trying to return to a calming tone. âI know. I just really donât like the idea of you having to be around him. Thatâs all.â
He nodded. âI know. I donât like it either, but itâs the best shot we have.â
I looked back over at Morgan and Rossi, and they both gave me a knowing look. I nodded.
âOkay. Letâs go,â I said.
âWait, all of us?â Derek paused, his attention on Reid. He hesitated.
âIf you donât want all of us there, we understand that,â Rossi offered.
âNo, I want you there,â Spencer said, still a bit hesitant.
âAre you sure? Because if you donât want any of us there,â he looked over at me, âor you donât think itâd be a good idea to have one or more of us there, thatâs fine.â
What the hell was he looking at me for? I was offended, âRossi, is there something youâre not telling me that I should know about?â
âItâs just that you being there could be âŚâ he trailed off. I wasnât sure how to fill in that blank, but whatever it was, it wasnât good. What was I doing wrong this time?
âNo,â Reid said more confidently. âI want you all there.â
âOkay, kid. Lead the way,â Derek said. My mouth was still open, reeling from the shock followed by the suspense.
Rossi and I shared the back seat of the car on our way over to William Reidâs office, leaving an awkward silence looming over the vehicle.
âLook, Iâm sorry. I only meant that-â
âItâs okay, Rossi, seriously. I donât think I want to know anyway,â I said, which was a lie. I did want to know, I just didnât want to have that conversation in the back of a car on our way to meet Spencerâs dad, stressing him, and selfishly myself, out even more.
Reid had been confident about his decision to talk to his father all the way up until we entered the building. His whole demeanor changed and he seemed frozen in time.
âCan I help you?â the lady sitting behind the front desk offered.
âYeah âŚâ Reid said. We all looked at him expectantly, but it was like the words were caught in his throat, like he couldnât get enough oxygen to continue.
âWeâd like to speak with William Reid,â Rossi helped.
âIs he expecting you?â
âI donât think so.â Rossi held out his badge.
âHeâs in a meeting right now, why donât you have a seat and Iâll tell him youâre here,â she said, turning back to her desk.
âYou okay?â Morgan asked.
âYeah,â Reid answered, his breathing labored. âNo, um, yeah. Iâm, Iâm gonna go to the bathroom.â He took off, speed walking away from us.
âIâve never seen him like this before,â Derek commented. Neither had I. Heâd told me bits and pieces about his family life, but that was a topic we both decided to veer away from. In all other stressful or emotionally taxing situations, he was able to keep his composure. Do the job, be objective. He even kept it together when his mom had to get involved with a case of ours. The only time Iâd seen him get even a little rattled was when a case had quite a bit in common with his childhood surrounding schizophrenia right after he got some troubling news about his motherâs health, but all the other ones having to do with absent fathers creating killers didnât get to him. Granted, those were a dime a dozen.
This, however, was a whole new beast.
â... more of a personal matter,â Rossi was saying to a man near the front desk. I must have zoned out.
âIt concerns your son,â Morgan said.
âM-my son? Did something happen,â the man said. So that ugly bastard is his father?
âThatâs what weâre trying to find out,â Reid said, entering the lobby again. His stood more straight, trying to make himself look as tall as possible, and I could tell it was taking all of his effort to appear professional. I saw his back muscles start twitching.
They stared at each other for a few moments, sizing each other up, before Spencer said, âHello, dad.â
William cleared his throat, âFollow me.â He led us back to his office, Rossi and Morgan sandwiching Reid between them, while I straggled behind, shutting his office door.
âYou donât look like me anymore. You used to, everybody said so,â William started. It was a lame excuse for a connecting point.
âThey say some people look like their dogs, too,â Spencer quipped with an eyebrow raise. âItâs attributed to prolonged mutual exposure. Elderly couples also, they unconsciously mimic the expressions of people theyâve been around their whole life, so it kinda ⌠kinda makes sense that I wouldnât really look like you, I havenât seen you in 20 years.â Whenever he got anxious, all of his sentences ran together in one long stream of consciousness.
âAre you here on business?â William changed the subject.
âJust wrapping up a case,â Rossi dryly answered.
âA five year old boy was abducted and murdered,â Morgan chimed in.
âOh, yeah I read about that, Ethan Hayes, right? Thatâs terrible,â William responded.
âThat case got me thinking about Riley Jenkins,â Reid said, and William turned away. âYou remember Riley Jenkins?â
âOf course.â
âIâve been having dreams about him for a really long time, but when we came back here for this case it jogged something and the dream changed. I saw his killer. It was you.â
âInteresting dream.â
âYou donât seem all that surprised,â Morgan questioned.
âI stopped being surprised by Spencerâs mind a long time ago,â William responded.
âThere are certain criteria we consider when looking at this type of suspect. You fit parts of that profile,â Rossi said. He was looking at William like he wanted to choke him out right there. I could empathize.
âMe?â
âWe just want your cooperation,â Rossi continued.
âMy coop-â William started. He looked around at our faces and realized that we were all dead serious. âYouâre not actually saying you think I killed Riley Jenkins.â
Reid gave a slight shake of his head. âWe didnât say that.â
âGood, âcause thatâs absurd,â William stated. That was it. I couldnât take it anymore. I couldnât just stand there, staring at his face knowing what he did to Spencer and not say anything.
âIs it?â I asked. William looked over at me like he was acknowledging my presence for the first time. âYou were able to do something as absurd as abandon your own son, who knows what else youâre capable of.â
Rossi gave me a warning look, but Spencer didnât even falter, his burning gaze set on William.
âExcuse me?â William asked.
âYou heard me,â I simply stated.
âYou know, I donât think I caught your name when I first let you all into my office,â he said, a slight threat resting on his undertone.
âChambers.â
âAnd how do you know my son, Chambers,â William asked.
âYour son? Youâre getting quite possessive considering youâve only just now met him for the first time as an adult,â I said. I kept my voice a low growl, trying to keep my head on my shoulders.
âWhat can I say? Iâm concerned about his selection of company.â I scoffed. I was starting to realize why Rossi didnât think it was a good idea having me around. I quickly scanned myself and remembered that I wasnât exactly dressed like âFBIâ today. Iâd already worn all of my official-looking outfits and was left with a more casual one, which I figured was fine because we werenât âofficiallyâ on the job. I was wearing a simple, low cut, white t-shirt under a leather jacket, with black pants and combat boots. My hair was in a ponytail, so from where he was sitting, he could probably spot my four visible tattoos.
âYou donât have a say in my selection of company. You gave that up a long time ago,â Spencer jumped in.
âWell, whatever your friend Chambers is implying-â
âAgent. Sheâs Agent Chambers,â Reid said. I refrained from smirking.
âRegardless of what Agent Chambers is implying I did, I did not kill Riley Jenkins.â
âWeâd just like permission to look through your computer, access your records,â Morgan said, trying to regain control and focus over the situation.
âYeah and, what would you be looking for exactly?â William challenged. He turned and looked pointedly at Spencer. âYou want access to my files? Get a warrant.â
Spencer stared him down, but turned to leave. We headed toward his office door when he decided to add one last thing. âIâm proud of you, you know that? Youâve done a lot of good, choosing to help people. I mean, other people with your talents might have sought out different opportunities, a private sector. My god, you could have made a fortune.â He sighed and the message seemed forced. He sounded condescending, disappointed even, that his son wasnât making millions.
Thatâs when I snapped.
âNo. You know what, actually, no,â I mumbled to myself, shaking my head and turning around to walk back towards William. I couldnât even stop myself before I punched him square in the jaw. It caught him so much by surprise that he toppled out of his chair and onto the ground. I placed a foot on his throat, careful not to put too much pressure on it, and squatted down so that I could see the fear in his eyes. âYou listen to me, you worthless piece of shit.â I knew that one of the three behind me was calling my name, probably to stop, but I was too hyped up on adrenaline to pay attention. I was committed now. I removed my foot and grabbed a wad of cloth at the base of his neck and yanked him up to standing.
âYouâre proud of him? You donât get to be proud of him. You did nothing to help him get to where he is now. The only thing you did was provide him with the feeling of abandonment and anger, which luckily he was strong enough to use as fuel to become the amazing man standing in front of you, instead of letting it rip him apart. Heâs way more than your small mind could ever comprehend, and he is worth way more than the bullshit fortune you wish he was making.â
âHeâs also worth more than spending time with a slut like you,â he spat at me. I switched my grip to wrap around his throat, and swiftly shoved him up against the wall.
âYouâre right. I have been a shitty person for pretty much my entire life. The only redeeming quality I have, is that I know Doctor Spencer Reid, and for whatever reason, he has allowed me to continually be a part of his life. To be there for him. Which is more than I can say for you. A child, especially a son, needs a good male role model, otherwise they grow up with the feeling that they canât trust anyone, especially men. They have problems keeping healthy relationships because they canât trust their partner, or worse, they canât trust themselves not to end up just like their mom or dad. You were mentally healthy enough to raise him, a luxury that some people donât have, but instead you were too weak. You left him with a mentally handicapped parent that couldnât take care of herself, let alone a child. You didnât even bother checking in on them. What if sheâd died? What if their house burnt down? What if something happened and he was left all alone? He would have ended up in foster care or on the streets, and could have easily turned out like one of the monsterâs he now hunts.â My face was hot, and I quickly swiped at the dampness on my cheeks. Get it together. My voice lowered to a murmur as the next words rolled off my tongue. It felt like it was the first time I had fully comprehended them myself, âHe could have easily turned out like me.â
I swallowed, coming up for air, but I wasnât done yet. âIs that what you would have wanted? Would you have wanted him coming in here, not to respectfully ask you for your side of the story, not even to just arrest you like he definitely could have, but to come in here looking to kill you? Is that what you wanted! Did you even think about that?â
âNo,â was all he could manage to get out. He was choking on his words, so I loosened my grip. But only a little.
âNo to what? No you didnât want that or no you didnât think about that?â
âBoth! I wouldnât have wanted that for him. And I didnât think about it that way,â he struggled.
âExactly. But thatâs what you should have been thinking about. You should have been thinking about your child, not yourself.â I released his neck with force, shoving him away from me and further into the wall. I stepped back, giving him room to slouch in on himself. âThe least you could do is answer a few simple questions for him. You owe him at least that much.â
With that, I turned around, my brain not even fully capable of processing my co-workerâs reactions, and walked out the door. I kept walking at a feverish pace until I reached the bathroom. The moment I closed the door behind me, I broke down into a sobbing mess.
What is wrong with you? You need to get your shit together! This isnât even about you, but as always, you had to go and make it about yourself. You are supposed to be there for Spencer, not the other way around. Heâs the one having to face his absent father and relive his traumatic childhood, not you. Pull yourself together!
I forced myself to deep breathe.
Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. In, out. In, out.
I walked over to the sink, careful to avoid the mirror, and splashed my face with water. Once I felt I was sufficiently washed clean of my meltdown, I looked up into my own eyes.
What is happening to you?
I shook my head, trying to clear my thoughts and refocus on the situation at hand. I grabbed a paper towel and blotted at my face. I took one more quick glance at the mirror, making sure I didnât look like a complete wreck, and exited the bathroom.
This is about Spencer. Get over yourself. Be there for Spencer.
I walked back out into the main lobby to see that Derek and Rossi were waiting for me.
âWhereâs Spencer?â I asked, trying to ignore their worried faces and the urge to just curl up and evaporate into thin air.
âHeâs still in there talking to William. They asked us to wait out here,â Morgan answered.
I nodded. âTalking about Riley Jenkins?â
âIâd assume so. You were pretty ⌠convincing,â Rossi commented. I nodded again, not knowing what to say. I stood there with my arms crossed in a self hug, digging into my sides harder than usual trying to control myself and my breathing. I looked down at my feet.
Please donât ask, please donât ask, please donât ⌠wait no. It doesn't matter if they ask because this isnât about you. This is about Spencer and you all need to be clear headed and focused on him and what he needs.
About 20 minutes later, Spencer emerged looking as pissed as he was before, but now he also looked confused.
âWhat did he say?â I was quick to ask before the focus could be shifted. Not like I was expecting it to be.
âNot much, just that the three of us should talk about it together,â he answered, voice strained.
âThe three of you? Whoâs number three?â Morgan asked.
âMy mother.â

So I was in an awkward spot. I just blew up the meeting between Spencer and his dad, but I also kind of helped get him talking? I couldnât tell what he was thinking about it. He seemed irritated and up-tight but those were also feelings he had because of his father and the whole situation, so I didnât know what to do regarding him going to talk to his mother.
Do I come with, to continue to support him? Do I hang back because I donât want to cause any more problems? If I hang back and he actually does want me there, then Iâm being unsupportive. If I go and he doesnât want me there, then Iâm being pushy.
I tried so hard to look for a hint as to what I should do and it never came. I was forced to breach the topic and ask, âSpencer, what would you like me to do?â
He stopped next to the car and faced me. âWhat do you mean?â
âI just donât know ⌠I donât know if you want me to come with or ..?â I trailed off.
âOh. Um,â he seemed caught off guard by my question. âMy mother is a very difficult person to talk to, and this is a sensitive subject so âŚâ
âYouâd rather have me stay here?â I completed. There was no malice in my voice, just concern for him. He wasnât responding, so I assured him, âDonât worry if thatâs the case. I understand.â
He nodded.
âWhy donât I stay here with Aundreya, which will help lessen the stress on your mother, and you can take Morgan with you to go talk to her?â Rossi offered. Oh no. I knew what that meant. Derek and Spencer nodded at his words, and got into the car together. Rossi gestured for me to join him as he started walking back toward the hotel that was only a few blocks from the office.
I quickly caught up to him and he put his arm out, side-eyeing me and giving me that signature Rossi smirk. For real? I sarcastically let out a sigh and rolled my eyes, but I couldnât help returning the small, closed-lip smile. I looped my arm in his, and we continued to walk. In an alternate universe, he was walking me down the aisle.
We walked in silence for a block before he finally came out with it. âSo, would you care to inform me what that little episode was about?â
âI donât like disrespectful people.â
âNeither do I. That doesnât mean Iâm going to hit every one of them in the face.â
âWell, you tend to have more manners then I do.â
âTrue. But I also didnât feel personally connected to that situation.â
âWhat are you talking about, we are both protective of Reid.â
âWe are, but we both know thatâs not what Iâm referencing,â he said. He stopped walking and turned to face me, taking my hands in his. âTalk to me, Aundreya.â
His eyes were soft but piercing, and his wise-guy aura was getting to my head.
I nodded, squeezed his hands, then dropped them so I could loop my arm back in his. We continued walking as I spoke. âDo you remember what I told you about my family situation about a year ago?â
âYou mean when we went to dinner? Yes. You told me that your parents got divorced when you were six, you started living with your mother full time when you were nine, and havenât had contact with your father since you were ten.â I was surprised that he cared enough to remember all of that.
âYeah. During those three years that I was splitting time between my parents, my sister and I had to deal with my abusive father. It was mostly verbal abuse and mental and emotional manipulation. Honestly, Iâve dumped most of the memories from that time period,â I said. He glanced over at me, silently inviting me to continue, so I did. âJust the feeling I got every time he showed up to a game of mine when I didnât want him there, or I ran into him for any other purpose, was the worst mix of feelings Iâve ever experienced. It was terror and discomfort and panic and hatred. I felt physically sick every time and it was like my brain stopped working. Even though I donât really remember everything that happened to me, that he did to me, I just have this overwhelming feeling of disgust. I guess that Spencerâs dad demeaning him like that, and his situation being kind of similar to mine, just set me off.â
Rossi nodded and his features told me he was deep in thought. He was probably still trying to process everything Iâd told him. âYou felt the need to fight back.â
âYes.â
âCan I make an assumption here?â He looked concerned. I just shrugged and nodded. âI think that while you were going through that, your big sister protected you, and you were her support system to fall back on, to keep her grounded. Youâve since become quite the fighter, and somewhere in there,â he gestured to my head, âyou regret not fighting back harder when you had the chance. You regret not helping your sister out, and you now feel the need to help Spencer out and fight back like you think you should have with your own father.â
It was stunning to me that he could dissect my thoughts better than I could. Everything he said struck a nerve and made complete sense. Iâd been trying to figure myself out for over ten years, and heâd figured me out in under ten seconds. Itâs astonishing how that works.
âDamn Rossi. Youâre so good at this stuff,â I said, and he offered a gentle laugh. âSeriously. You just described a thought process that Iâve had for ages that I didnât even know Iâve had for ages until you just now told me about it.â
âHey, itâs much much easier examining whatâs going on with someone else than it is to have to self diagnose. Thereâs a reason they say that doctors are the worst patients,â he said, raising his eyebrows.
âAm I your patient now?â I asked, returning the eyebrow raise.
âWould you like to be?â
âIf youâre going to enlighten me like that all the time, hell yeah.â
He smiled. âAlright then. Thatâll cost you $17.99 up front and an additional $5.99 each month after.â
âOh, well in that case, just kidding. It isnât that important to me,â I laughed.
âWell, if you can convince Reid to drink half as much coffee, itâll be included in the budget.â I laughed again. It felt good after a weird and taxing day.
âWell then Iâm definitely screwed!â Oh right. Speaking of, âHow do you think itâs going?â
âIâm not sure. I hope for the kidâs sake that itâs going well.â
âMe too.â We entered the hotel, and decided weâd wait in the lobby playing cards until they came back.
# # # # # # # # # # # # #
They didnât get back until 11 that night, during which time theyâd talked to Diana, arrested William, released him, found out that Gary Michaels was dead but was the killer, arrested Lou Jenkins for the murder of Gary Michaels, and finally got the whole story out of Diana and William.
âAnd you didnât call us?â I accused, grogginess in my voice. Rossi and I had since fallen asleep in the lobby chairs, but only for less than an hour. That was a lot to go through for just the two of them in the back half of the day.
âWe had it covered,â Derek answered. I couldnât help feeling guilty, like it was my fault they didnât call because they thought I was too unstable.
âSo what now?â I asked, trying to brush the feeling off.
âNothing. We let the local police handle it and we head back tomorrow,â Derek replied. Rossi and I nodded.
âWe should all get some sleep,â Rossi commented, surveying our faces.
He had a point, so we headed up to our respective rooms and I just about crashed the moment I entered mine. My stomach growled and I remembered that Iâd skipped lunch and Rossi and I forgot to get dinner. Our nerves must have been too amplified to be overpowered by hunger. It didnât matter now because Reid got his answers, triggering relief to course through my veins and I was much too tired to care about food. I was on the brink of sleep when I heard a gentle knock on the door.
I grudgingly got up and looked out the peep-hole. It was Spencer.
âHey,â I said with a bit more energy, opening the door.
âHey,â he said. He stood there in silence giving me an expectant look.
âOh, yeah, sorry. Come in.â The lack of sleep and sustenance was starting to show. I moved to the side so that he could slip by me. He sauntered toward the bed in the middle of the room and sat down. I followed suit. I waited patiently for him to speak, because I knew whatever caused him to come to my room at 11:30 after a stressful day was important, and he had to say it in his own time.
âThank you.â His voice was a small whisper and I felt like I hadnât heard him right. What does he possibly have to thank me for?
âFor what?â I murmured.
âFor staying with me through this. For trying to protect me and standing up for me. For respecting my space. And for letting me come into your room late at night to tell you this.â
âOf course. Iâd do anything for you,â I said. It had come out so casually that I almost missed it. Spencer looked up at me with utter shock, which zapped me right back into reality. Oh shit. Had that really just tumbled out of my mouth?
I panicked and tried to quickly cover it up. âLike Iâm happy to be here for you and you are welcome to come bug me at any time, day or night. Iâm probably not doing anything interesting and Iâm probably not getting much sleep either.â Although I could really use some right now if it would help me shut the hell up and stop spouting stupid shit.
Spencerâs mouth was still hanging slightly ajar from the shock of my initial comment. When he realized that I was just going to sit there staring at him until he did something, he shut his mouth and looked away from me again. âCan I ask you something?â
âAlways.â
âYou werenât just talking to my dad in that office, were you?â
I sighed and met his warm brown eyes. I swear those things change color on the daily. Sometimes theyâre a perfect hazel, sometimes theyâre a light caramel brown, sometimes theyâre a dark chocolatey brown, and sometimes, when the light hits right, they look as gold as the soul behind them.
âNo,â I admitted, âI was talking to both of them.â
âDo you wanna talk about it?â
âDo you wanna hear about it?â I countered. He nodded shyly. âYou know how I told you that my parents got divorced and I lived with both of my parents equally for three years and then my mom got full custody?â
âYes.â
âWell, those three year were hell. I canât remember everything that happened to me because I mustâve dumped most of it. I told Rossi that I didnât remember anything at all, but that was a lie. The really big incidents, I remember. Like I remember him shoving me up against a brick wall giving me whiplash for the next two weeks. I remember him cussing out my mother in the rec center, him screaming at us in the car, especially after going to see the therapist, and leaving my sister on the side of the road because she pushed too many of his buttons. I remember him pushing me down on the bed and forcing my legs open so he could look at the rash between them, even though I begged him to just let my sister help me with it,â I choked. I hadnât told anyone this. I hadnât really talked about it with my mom and sister much when they were alive. âI remember having panic attacks and being constantly terrified that he was going to kill my mom or sister. And I just remember this intense feeling of complete hopelessness and dread whenever I was around him or his family. They were suffocating.â
He looked at me, eyes glistening, and he let a heavy teardrop fall. I slowly brought my hand to his face, asking silent permission, and when I got no resistance, placed it softly on his cheek. My fingers barely brushed his jaw as my thumb lightly wiped away the tear. I breathed, âDonât cry. Donât cry for me. It was a long time ago, and I am who I am today because of it.â
He put his own hand atop mine, engulfing it, subconsciously applying a bit more pressure which I was happy to comply with.
âItâs just ⌠Itâs just that no one should have to go through that. Even if it was a long time ago.â He closed his eyes, leaning into my hand.
âI know. Neither one of us deserved what we got, but we survived and came out the other side. Thatâs what matters now.â I placed my other hand on his cheek, and tilted his head slightly up towards mine. âHow are you doing?â
âIâll be okay.â
âDo you want to talk about it?â
He shook his head. âNo. I just want you to know that without you, I couldnât have solved this or gotten the answers I needed. I appreciate your strength to face my father like that.â
âAnd I admire yours to do the same.â He leaned out of my touch, leaving me feeling cold and got up to leave. I didnât even know what I was saying before I blurted, âWait.â
He turned.
âDo you want to stay?â I was too tired to fight the words, too tired to even be surprised by them.
âIâd like that,â he responded. I smiled and he returned it. I didnât want him to be alone with his thoughts and nightmares, and I selfishly didnât want to be alone with mine either. He slipped off his shoes and I kicked off mine and he came to lay down next to me. Neither of us cared about the clothes we were still wearing and definitely wrinkling from the long day. I took big spoon, knowing he needed me more than I needed him at the moment, even if he wasn't ready to talk about what heâd just experienced over the last 24 hours yet.
I was just about to pass out, arms hooked on my own elbows around him when he whispered, âI never explained this to you, but I think deep down the reason I was so resistant to you at the beginning was because I knew you and I were only a choice or two away from living the other personâs life.â
âSpencer,â I murmured, âyou donât owe me an explanation.â
âI want you to have one, though.â
âThanks. Iâm just glad that the one or two choices after that led to our paths crossing.â
âYeah. Me too.â That was all he could get out before both of us slipped under, able to finally relax in each otherâs arms, finding reprieve from the relentless struggles of the waking world.

Clone Wars   Shadow    Warriors
      Seas 4
Oh   this-  just   screams    edgy     ...  Whelp
So is Jar    Jar an   adult,     now,?       (Asking because before his   characteri     zation was force of nature to child
Now he   seems to have his own   personality.
Which is fine  if you want to change some details for the sake of a   better story,    (Or to simply    explore     a new    angle,).  Aesthetic
Just.       need to make sure Iâm holding them to the right standard,
  Okay,
  That-     was   relatively   adult,
 Mm
  Um.
  I
 Aight     .       .     Well-
  WaitÂ
Did they just call Jar Jar   away from    Cou-ncil-
.     I mean they are clearly   trying    which      is  some thing    I do    give credit  for-
Though         The        Tone        Is       Robot-          Ic-
(Though that might be int-     entional since it seems to be hinting that this lady is practicing some kind of     mind tricks on him
(Aka, heâs doing it     under      tox, because we donât do suspension of choice in   dra-      mat     ic    Me-    -dia,
 Sâup
 What?
 I-
 -
  H-elp
Screw my own  accou-  -ntability   -    See that was the correct  -amount of  emotion-
.     Okay     -     Right-
 Sus-     (pic)
No one noticed the obvious people right there?
Like not even    Mr. sus     there?
[or are they just so   kind that itâs like  oh yeah we were just talking hate speech   but go right ahead?
Logic?
 There
Yeah   some shit is definitely going on,
For sake of argument*    sake, iâm just going to assume that his reaction to    toxic   behavior
*Account   ability-
 Any way
 I-
 Iâm still    going to try,
Despite  you clearly saying you want understood
Because assumed authority     - and assuming you know better than a person about themselves
   Is totally ok-
   - In this     society
-[Cries     in    sad   âaccountability,â   -of-    war,     ]
 Whelp,
 In-   flue-    n    -c    e
 Still an  adult-
 Okay-
Imagine   it was just a normal necklace   and he pulled that shit-
[Ok for the sake of argument Iâm going to assume the necklace is symbolism for toxic influence,
 Being around it     enabling]
It-      -     His voice voice dropped like     - 6 octaves
Also I swear if they try to  excuse him    for his actions-
   No
Mind over matter   -Okay, so theyâre not excusing him for his  -actions,
Me-      an     -    OK so itâs not naturally evil it   just comes down to the users    so that dude was still totally responsible,
 Didnât   change   - much
  -    Ha-Ha
 Actual   gas   -lightingâ
Also   persuade,       -        Okay,   good not excusing him    from his actions,    -    Thing
The  gaslighting goes deep    -    Also isnât the Darkside supposed to be    negative over involvement?    -    Aight-      -    -      A-lone
Oh yeah thatâs a great idea letâs just let the  dude that just got gaslighted and completely fell forward go back into the person who did it,
 đ
   Genius   Â

With inter- gen productivity,      They are possibly given    five warnings before      Being      Kick     ed-]
For the sake of argu-    ment as well    as simplicity-
Weâre stick    -ing with     bas-     ic-
If someoneâs acting toxic     with you, you      reflect and you donât have to     hang out with anyone     you donât want to,
  Logic
This dude    is very clearly making it obvious that   heâs willing to listen to this person,
 And, enabling
âCl-â
See heâs gaslighting him again    because  he thinks he can get away with it,
With no  accoun-     tability-

Wr-
Oh!
 Is he a   Gungan    Jedi?
 Also,
 You Donât Â

Oh yeah    no the creepy magical stuff wasnât enough of a    fecking clue in-

  Whelp,
  Wreck-ing    -house
Okay, but how do you think this is going to look to the general public like two Jedi,( very good at persuasion -   mind tricksâ -just showed up, now theyâre leader and said Jedi are wreck-ing one of their minsterâs houses- Â
One who couldâve   feign-      ed lack of support for the     war
Like if this is a   set up- Â
the chips-    are about to fall,
 Da-
Okay, seriously how obviously evil, Â Â was this person?
Like we have a weird creepy room,    The robots apparently hanging from the   chandelier   (eck)     And    the knife
Like if this person    ever-    went-  through a checkpoint
  Also,     Oh-
  That-
(That   really     does not    look good,)
  Bo-ss
Yeah,    she clearly has   medical experience,
(Also yeah   thatâs really going to make it   better-â
Oh yeah the   senator was    seen trying to clean up the    evidence-
Well the Jedi ran out   full swordâs- a blazing
(Instead of you know the    Senator chasing after him,     While the peacekeeper stayed behind and tried to     tend to the person,]
  Great    -     -    Or   Not-
Well- tensions   just got raised,
 Of,
 Ai.    Ght,Â
 Whelp,
(Okay, no way heâs totally not dead    but sure-)

That-  doesnât tell me anything else-
  Like;     Critical    condition?
  D-usk
  Li-terally     no one else?
(Like donât get me wrong Iâve been a pretty big Jar-jar fan ever since the change-)
But really, the Senator, the person that spends the most time away from your - planet
Thatâs the person,   they trust the most?
 Ai-
 Hm-
Oh yeah just put on the deadly leaders hat-
  The rese-mblance-
  Not really?
I mean all humans technically   look the same-
 But-
Pretty sure Jar jar is a lot    scrawn-      thin     -er
Also if theyâre not going to listen to him as him    theyâre not going to listen to him    as he pretends to be their (dead) leader
Also, please donât go with the    liar revealed plot,
Yeah no, they have completely different kind of light.  tones,
   The face structure-
  Co-mpletely     different-
   -
  Nope
 -Dead
 Di-ssent
 Agree
  I-
OK yeah Iâm just gonna go over the fact, that as previously state,  I am not a huge fan of the liar revealed plot-
  -or lying
(No because itâs- unrealistic-   - or thereâs anything wrong with it
 -people do lie
-maybe because of how overdone and       poorly done itâs been,
-With the liar getting off Scott free without any          weight
But I really donât like this        plot-
-And   the  skip   button   maybe  used   ad-   nausuem-  -
[Well- shit     [for reference; I was using the skip button ad nausuem when I randomly stopped at the part    with   Greivous
Things just got a whole lot worse]
     [Tumblr        Refresh]    -
  Any     Way,
Aww,    Thatâs kind of nice the   friendship and reliance    the dude has on    Other-     Half       -      Yes     âBoss    Leoniâ    when someone gets     tox     you leave-     - In a    - relation      ship- Â
Also yeah heâs definitely not    âBoss      Leoniâ       -       He wouldâve stayed and tried to take the   tox
(Aka Jar-jar is less ena-   bling, les-     tox-    And    Doesnât    Take     It     For      Much     More.       Than       He       Has         To,
    (Heâs  les  -s
   Dyfun.  -c)
   Okay
Good       Job   -    Also - yeah  howâd you manage that     -      That-
Didnât get  car  ried up the chain of  com-   mand-     -       Then again Gri-  evous has shown to be a pretty  shit boss.    -    So I canât blame these guys   for being like yeah compl-    ete stranger   I will totally    take a nap    -right   ,now-      -    You     kinda    have    sticks-     -   [The rain is  really   nice,]
[is this the first time weâve seen them use active   particle effects    for the camera?
Either way    itâs really     nice       -

[Donât fight a metal cyborg with metal sticks when youâre not prepared to take it, full way,)
  I-
[I feel like this is supposed to be some   big build up but they only shared like one scene where dude was completely silent,]
 Like,
  Sacr-ifice
Die to take someone out with you
[Great
 Now
  Ouch]
Are  they actually going to kill off    grievous because this isnât look-ing   too   - good    -     Shit-
Dude-    is still not dead-     -     How?     -      Whelp-      -      Oh,   hey    where the fuck   did you come    from,

Now heâs just chilling in this    dudeâs  sipping earl gray    Or-    Some     Shit-

 Okay
Getting a little   ahead of yourself   episode-    -    O k
  I
Hearing this,  Skywalker doesnât immediately run back    shout     -ing    nope-     - -     Because, to my knowledge the speaking at    room volume,
Not   whispering     and the distance     isnât enough to    -explain it        -       Ai      -  -      Wel-       -    There goes one     min-ion-       -        Droids are apparently   expensive enough to    chastise   Grievous      over-
 But sen-tient - beings are     a dimeâ   a âdozen-

Heâs right.   -      But dude- thatâs pretty    ham fisted-
  I mean-
How many episodes      (and    possibly     seasons-)    do we have to       go-       - -   Anakin-    is a dick   to lanterns-    -     Also the random theme of the   bots-    coming out of nowhere-   continues-    -    St    -op-      -     Wh-     elp-

Oh, yeah,    Heâs alive weâre not going to bring that up in any    mention-able way?
   Ike
  Wh   e    l-    p
   Oh      -   That was  -nice-
You deceived everyone and lied to all      our people,  youâll make a great    leader,
Or a great council/   committee leader considering that they do have an open position      ,       Best
I like that they had one bad ass fall and had it replace-d by Dooku being particularly bad-ass     -      In his    place-
In the trade off near the end really speaks to the   frag-ility of war
  I thought-
It was pretty al-right  Though it really did seem like   - they were trying to build up to something but the structure unfortunately     just didnât support it,
Which is unfortunate because they do seem like    bits- that couldâve been nice
Like Jar-jar being a constant    peacekeeper-
  The underwater     nations-
Wars be-       tween      - Those         Dudeâs
And that   general guy    -     Who seems to be like he was supposed to be this   - really big deal
[probably intended to do something    massive in the previous    arcs,]
But, here,   all he did was that one scene,
[Wouldâve worked better if he was like this Re-     Public Gen-     Er      Al-
  To the    shark guy-
   And Akbar,
Was just like the resident     enforcer-
Or something to do with the    prince
I think it wouldâve really worked better with the concept of     âbeing takenâ     under,         As well that possibly being a good contrast between   Jar Jar      binks      And     Char-     If Jar- jar got promoted-     With Char being eager at first but then realizing he just     canât-      And Jar- Jar being reluctant at first but realizing he    can-
[Note; assumed authority is bad,      Just- some people are better at using it for venting     than others)
Nope boomers vs throw-     it-back, boom-
    I-
And it really did feel like this episode    -shouldâve been the split oneÂ
Nearing the end- it started to feel like the 1st-    part of a second ep-
  Which is fine
  Just cut-     of-
Episode all around being al-right, with just several parts that didnât make quite sense including the emphasis on the general for that one scene,

An Unusual Hero C6S3
Please remember, this is unedited and unfinished, but will hopefully fill in the holes that were left and answer some questions without leaving too many others. HOWEVER I will answer all and any questions if you want to leave me a comment.
Next update - Tuesday 04/05/2021
An unhappy squeal of surprise jarred Luc awake. He sat up quicklyâ
âFuck!â he called as he smacked his head on the roof of the too small car. He rubbed his forehead as he looked around, trying to work out where he was and what had woken him.
The driverâs door was open and over the top of it he spied a tree line far in the distance. With the air cold and damp, a gravelly pathway under the car, and the sounds of splashing water and short gasps of breath, Luc was betting theyâd stopped by a lake or river and Sarah was trying to use the freezing cold water for a wash or something of the like.
The TV star shook his head as he climbed out the little Hyundai, closing both his and Sarahâs doors. He glanced around, taking in the beautiful sight of the Grand Teton mountain range before honing in on his⌠captor? He shook his head, that didnât sound right. Heâd ran off with her of his own free will, but then it wasnât as if heâd had much choice. Between one gun and the other, hers had seemed the less threatening.
God, Luc hoped he hadnât been wrong about that.
He glanced down the the lakeâs edge. Heâd been right, Sarah was knelt beside what Luc knew to be icy cold water, splashing it over her face and shivering with each handful as the water dripped down her nose and chin.
He took a deep breath and released it before he called down to her. âKeep the doors closed.â
He quickly turned away, finding the nearest tree and unbuttoning his jeans before relieving himself against the bark.
âOh God,â he moaned in satisfaction as his bladder emptied. What an idiot heâd been yesterday refusing to go when Sarah had offered him the chance. Heâd partly refused just in case sheâd left him behind, that sheâd call The Demon and offer him over if he left her alone. The other part of him knew if heâd got out the car yesterday heâd have called the police on Sarah.
âThe car smells,â she called back to him. âIt needs airing.â
âRather the smell of us than raccoon piss,â he shouted back. âOr a bear getting nosey.â
âA bear!â
He chuckled as he heard Sarah scrambling around on the shoreline, her footsteps crunching on the gavel as she hurried back up towards the car. He shook himself off and was about to tuck his dick away when a stranger stuck their face in his. He reared back at the intrusion, stumbling slightly, until his back hit the car.
âWhat theââ
The woman was the same height as Sarah, but had long, thick, auburn hair, sparkling green-blue eyes and a tiny petite nose and chin that made her cheeks look round and full. Luc knew his mouth was hanging open, but she was beautiful; fresh faced, wide-eyed, and the way her hair tumbled around her round face made her look innocent and vulnerable.
Although the terror in her eyes probably helped with that latter part.
âWhat do you mean a bear?â The voice was definitely Sarahâs. âAre there freaking bears around here?â Luc tried to fathom what had happened as he watched this womanâs head snap left and right as she scanned the line of trees on the other side of the car.
âWeâre in Wyoming,â he said, slowly. Perhaps sheâd been wearing a wig? A false nose and chin could also explain away the changes. But how hadnât he realised? He could usually spot prosthetics a mile away.
âDo you know how many parks there are up here?â he continued, his eyes taking in her new profile; her narrowed eyes were framed by long dark lashes and her nose had a little lift to it at the end. âWeâre probably not far from Yellowstone.â
âWhere Yogi and Boo-boo live?â
âEr, they live in Jellystone, and theyâre not real.â
âOh⌠Fuck off!â she snapped as she folded her arms across her chest and glared at him. Definitely still Sarah. The bite in her tone mirrored what heâd heard yesterday, although the flicker of annoyance in her eyes was different.
That was why her eyes had been odd yesterday. There had been no emotions within them. He hadnât been able to read her eyes, only her facial expressionsâwhich would have been hindered by the prostheticsâand her body language.
She huffed and shook her head when he refused to back down from her hard stare, dropping her eyes down his body to the floor. But her eyes grew large and a flush to her cheeks flamed the apples of them red. A small squeak of surprise came from her lips as they fell open and Luc glanced down to where she was looking, cursing himself when he saw his dick still hanging free and easy from between the flies of his jeans.
âFor fuckâs sake,â he hissed, quickly turning away from the womanâs eyes and tucking himself back into his jeans. Heat filled his own face and Luc knew heâd be bright red for a few minutes. Once his zip was secured, he stepped to the side and began to walk towards the waterâs edge, avoiding facing his partner in crime until he wasnât the colour of a tomato.
âSo what happened to the hair and eyesââ He began to call over his shoulder, only to stop when he saw her following him. Luc had been a star for many years, heâd had fans, super fans, and outright stalkers; bodyguards, teams of security, and once a police escort, but never had he been followed the way Sarah was tracking him now. Her back was to him, her was gun out and her head darted left to right as she tried to take in everything.
Where had the steel-balled woman from yesterday gone? Clearly Sarah was a city girl and not a country gal; she might be able to stare down death when it came in the form of a gun-toting terrorist, but heâd bet every nickle and dime he owned that sheâd run from a room screaming if a spider scurried from a corner.
He sighed and stopped, putting his hands on her shoulders he turned her around to face him. âSarah,â he said, pushing her gun down so she didnât accidentally shoot him. âHereâs the deal. If you see a raccoon just run and shout at the furry bastard. If a bear comes charging at you, get to a tree and climb. The cubs can haul up it, but the bigger ones shouldnât be able toââ
âShouldnât?â her voice squeaked.
âNow, if itâs a wolfââ
âGet in the fucking car, Luc!â Sarah wrenched herself from his grasp and turned, running up the tiny hill to the little black Hyundai. Luc couldnât stop the laughter that fell from his lips, a throw your head back guffaw, right from the belly.
âNow, Luc!â she screamed as she slammed the door and began to hot-wire the engine again. He chuckled all the way back to the car, shaking his head as he went at the irony. He hadnât laughed so hard or so freely in what felt like a lifetime.
The car coughed to life in the cold Wyoming air as he settled himself next to Sarah, a smile still playing on his lips as they pulled away.
âYouâre in a better mood,â she muttered, looking at him from the corner of her eye before fixing her gaze back on the track to the main road. Luc hummed in agreement; he was. Sure he was on the run, sure the life he knewâthe fame, fortune, and fansâwas over with, hell he might even be murdered tomorrow, but he was free.
His smile grew bigger at the thought, a show your teeth, shit-eating grin, Casey would say. He turned his attention out his window, taking in the landscape to hide his smile from Sarah.
Snow still covered the mountain tops that surrounded them and the chill in the air made him glad heâd never chosen to come camping this far north on hiatus. The boys on set had been hinting at attending one of the Dude Ranches that had been springing up over the last decade or so, but nothing had ever come of it. And the idea of Casey, Nick, Marc, or Robson surviving in a ranch setting was hilarious. He imagined Tony wouldâve been fine with it, and BB wouldâve probably outshone the lot. Sophie⌠He shook his head. That girl didnât go anywhere there wasnât an electrical socket for her hairdryer.
A twinge in his chest brought him up short as it hit him; he wasnât going to see any of them for a while. Or, perhaps, ever againâŚ
âWhere we heading?â he asked, trying to swallow the ball of emotion that suddenly seemed lodged in his throat.
âWe passed a town about an hour or so before we parked up last night,â Sarah told him as she pulled back onto the 191 and this time headed south. âWe need to get a few things and figure out where we can lay low for a while.â
âWhy donât we just go back there?â Luc asked, pointing over his shoulder with his thumb. âThere was a cabin in the trees that looks like itâs been locked up for the winter. Its owners probably wonât be up this way until the summer.â
He said cabin, but it had looked little more than a hut when heâs spied it through the forest. It probably had one or two rooms and no running water or electricity.
Sarah frowned at his suggestion, pulling her lower lip between her teeth as she considered it. âBut itâs May, summerâs nearly here, they could return at any time.â
âNah,â he shook his head. âSummer this far north doesnât start until July. Weâd probably be fine. Itâs off the highway,â he added as an incentive. âProbably better than a motel with our current situation.â
âBut⌠bears?â she said it quietly, her head hunching between her shoulders as she drew them upwards. Luc had to stop himself from grinning again, she was definitely a city girl. âOr were you lying about them?â She narrowed her eyes as she glanced at him. He held his hands up as he shook his head.
âAbsolutely not. But I can get some things to help keep all the nasty wildlife away.â He watched her as she considered his words, her finger tapping on the steering wheel again.
âNo bears?â
âNone.â He crossed his heart. âScouts honour.â
âWhat about wolves?â
âIâll keep them away too.â
âFine,â she said. âBut if I wake up to a bear in bed with me, youâre being its bitch.â
Any questions, please drop them in the comments. Next update on Tuesday!

Mom (Original Story)
Good morning, happy Friday, Did you miss me?
Sorry for disappearing on yâall for almost a month solid. My husband took a job in Montana and we scheduled a move with all of 5 weeks notice. Annnd then a viral disease became a official pandemic, school got canceled and this bitch still had to move us halfway across the country.
Readers of Dust: I plan on having us resuming biweekly updates starting next week. Weâre moved in as of Monday, furniture put together as of Wednesday and mostly unpacked as of Today. All that is left to distract me is two boxes, home schooling annnd the fact that my sister is a 5 minute walk from me.Â
Below is a short original story. My second posted here. Weird, right?
Warnings: noneÂ
Summary: The title âMomâ shifts and changes over oneâs life. The word we use to refer to the woman who gave us life can change with age and our emotions. Yet for many of us, that woman is always there, standing firm regardless of if we want her until, one day, she isnât.Â
Mom
The lights where too bright, reflecting off the white of the walls and floors. There were voices in the hall but the people in the room couldnât make out their words. The voices didnât matter. All that mattered, all that would ever matter was in that too bright room. It smelled of sanitizer but just as the words were lost on them, as was the smell. Â
The woman wearing bright blue scrubs smiled at the woman on the bed and the man leaned over the bed. Her job here was done. She wasnât needed here anymore so she would leave the room, off into what felt like another world to do just what she had done here again and again. Â
They didnât notice her leave. They didnât notice the bird that landed on the tree outside the window. They didnât notice the fluffy white clouds in the sky. All there was in their world to notice was the puffy pink cheeks, little button nose and dark eyelashes framed by a sea of white. Â
âIâm âmamaââ the woman whispered as big, dark eyes blinked up at her. A tiny little mouth stretched open in a yawn, exposing the tiny little tongue that pushed out. Â
~~~~~<3
The moon was high in the sky and stars shone down on the snow outside. It was peaceful night not matched by the fussy baby in her arms. The woman rocked and sang just the same while her husband worked the long night away. Â
âMama.â babbled the baby and the woman smiled. She knew it was too soon. She knew the baby was too young to use the word properly. She knew the little one was simply practicing her sounds. She knew all of it and yet her heart sang with the sound. Â
~~~~~<3
âMama!â She said, little legs taking her toward the woman standing at the stove. The rich smell of stew wafted in the air. She was hungry and maybe, just maybe if she was sweet enough she could get food now. Â
The woman turned from the pot and swooped down, scooping up her little body. The woman shook her head, smile soft on her lips. Little fingers wove though the womanâs brown hair as little lips moshed a sloppy kiss to the womanâs face. The laugh that the action brought from the woman was perhaps almost as good as any treat she had managed to earn for herself. Â
~~~~~<3
âMom!â The voice rang out over the sea of small bodies all lined up on the asphalt. She waved her arm over her head as her lopsided pigtails danced around her head. Theyâd been even in the morning but that was a lifetime ago. Â
There was so much she wanted to tell the woman making her way through the sea of adults. The backpack was puffy on her back but she held it with pride as she waited for her very first teacher to motion her over. Â
When she saw the wave, just like they practiced, she skipped up to the teacher and curled her little fingers into a fist. Softly, she bumped her knuckles against the teacherâs much larger hand. The cracks on his worn knuckles scratched at her tiny hand but she didnât mind. He was the teacher, the first of many. With a smile and a nod, he sent her on her way.
âMom!â She cried as she lunged herself into the womanâs legs. Warm arms wrapped around her and pulled her up as if she weighed nothing. It didnât matter that they were in the middle of the schoolyard, surrounded by strangers and new friends. The instant the womanâs arms wrapped around her tiny frame, she was home. Â
~~~~~<3
âMomma?â The woman came running at the sound of her strangled voice. Sheâd tried to hold herself together for as long as she could. All she had wanted was to keep the pain inside until she made it through that door. Â
The woman paused in the doorway, gazing down with the warmth of the sun at her tear stained face. That was all it took for her to crumble and spill the hurts of the day. Kids were not always nice to one another and hurt feelings were a part of growing up. Â
The knowledge that this too would pass did nothing to cool the warmth from the woman as she wrapped up the small girl in her arms as if she were little still. The woman wouldnât say it, not right now, but the she was still little. She grew with each passing blink of the eye but the woman would hold her in her arms for so long as she could. Â
When tears slowed, the woman left the girl alone only to come back with her keys. There was nothing the woman could do to undo the hurts of the day. There was nothing the woman could do to work out childhood politics for her. But she did know that ice cream in the park while tossing small bits of carrots for the ducks could soothe any hurt, at least for the afternoon. Â
~~~~~<3
âMom!â She shouted as the woman stood stone still as the she hurdled vial words at her. Words meant to cut deep seemed to glance right off the woman. She tired to chip away her resolve but no words seemed to work. Â
Finally when words ran out, she settled for sulking in her room. She wrote words of how unfair her life was on lined notebook pages. Line after line, she wrote of how much better it would be when she was free from this home. While she wrote, she was unaware of the woman crumbling in the living room.
The woman held her head in her hands, tears dropping down her wrists. This was a part of the process, she knew it but that did nothing to make the words hurt less. The girl who had once been a tiny baby, held within her arms was fighting to fly before sheâd even learned how to spread her wings wide enough. Â
Through the pain in her heart, the woman reminded herself that this storm too would pass. Seemingly a lifetime ago, before she had been the woman, she could remember what it had felt like to be trapped in that stage of between.
~~~~~<3
âMother.â A exasperated sigh sounded across the dinner table. The girl and the woman were failing to see eye to eye, once again. Still, the girl was now a woman herself in so many ways. If she wanted to marry, she could. Â
The woman had a hard time swallowing the choice just the same. It felt like the table between them could have just as easily been an ocean. The woman reached out, resting her reaching hand against the center of the table. A peace offering. Â
Regardless of the girlâs choices, the woman would always be there. She would always be her baby, even if she no longer fit in her lap. The girl stood up, schooling her face and walked out of the room. The womanâs hand rested empty as a she listened to the front door close.
~~~~~<3
âMa?â The voice came through the speaker from well over a thousand miles away. Technology had done wonders to keep them together even as she had grown up and moved away. Â
The woman wasted no time getting on the first flight out. The laundry needed to be done and there were dishes in the sink but it could wait. Her daughter needed her to help show her how to pick up the shattered pieces of her heart. Â
Though she was grown now, the girl had spent much of the night held in her motherâs arms. When the sun rose on them with the promise of a new day, together they worked as they packed her things. Heartbreaks were a dime a dozen, the woman would tell the girl though she wished she could take the pain herself. Â
~~~~~<3
âMama.â The woman cooed as her daughter sat on the bed in the too white room. Her hair was a mess and she looked tired but the woman knew the glow. She held her own little bundle in her arms, wrapped in pale blankets and a pale pink cap on her head. Â
The woman didnât feel old enough to be here, holding her daughterâs daughter. Theyâd been through life together, ups and downs. Theyâd watched the world change around them and now she was watching the girlâs life change in the same way hers had changed so long ago. Â
The girl rolled her eyes but smiled down at the bundle. She would make a good mother, of that the woman was sure. Still, she would take time to find her feet.
~~~~~<3
âMom?â The girlâs voice was thick with sleep and confusion. It was the middle of the light and her new husbandâs eyes reflected the light of her cellphone. They shone full of the concern that she was sure was reflected in her own eyes. Â
The woman tried to say she was fine, that it was nothing to worry about. She tried to say that it could wait till morning. Â
The girl wouldnât hear it. The man nodded to her as she slipped from the bed. The phone beeped as she flipped on the light. Itâs harsh radiance banished the shadows of the night, revealing her large wet eyes and pale face. Â
The woman had said it was nothing, that she would be fine. The woman said it could wait for morning but it didnât sound like it would be fine. It didnât sound like it could wait. Â
She tripped over a laundry basket and crashed to the floor as she struggled to get dressed in her rush. The man would stay behind and watch the little one. Her arm was bleeding from where it scratched against the bed frame but she had hardly noticed. Â
âMama?â A small voice called out. She clutched the limp stuffed bunny in her arms. It was nearly as big as she was and well loved. Â
The girl looked from her child, look of worry and fear on her small face to the man. He nodded at her. She needed to go, he would deal with the little one. The mother took a deep breath and steadied her mind for a few moments longer as she pulled the tiny body into her embrace. No one could say who needed the comfort more in that moment as tiny arms wrapped around her neck. Â
The little one was passed on to the man and she rushed out the door and into the night. Â
~~~~~<3
âMama.â The word was choked. It hurt to say it but the woman who had once been a baby in this very hospital a lifetime ago felt like she had to say it. Â
Trembling fingers wrapped around a too still hand. No one should ever be that still. Hands shouldnât be that cold. It was wrong. It was all wrong. The girl pushed back the silver hair from the womanâs face. It felt like yesterday that the woman was standing in the kitchen of her childhood home, long brown hair tied back in a braid.
It wasnât right. It wasnât fair. It was too soon. She needed her still. Â
The woman collapsed forward over the still body and her chest and shoulders shuddered as she clung to the body on the bed. In the doorway, the man stood holding onto the girl as they watched on with sad eyes.
âMomma?â The girl asked, worried. Sheâd never seen her mother cry like this. Her tiny mind couldnât process why her grandmother was so still on the bed, why she wasnât waking up but she knew something was very wrong. Â
âMomma?â
âMama.â

Quietly Shitty Men
âThere is a specific type of person who will siphon the gas right from you because theyâve never learned how to shine their own light.â My ex is engaged. That shouldnât bother me, should it? Oh, but it does. It bothers me because I saw it coming. Tell me, what makes a woman âcrazyâ? Is it when she follows her own instincts? Or is it when she suppresses them? Is she crazy for sensing something is wrong, or crazy for acting like it? It would be one thing if this was someone new. Good luck and God bless. It would be another if he said, at any point in the relationship, how he felt. That he was anxious or nervous or angry or scared or hurt or apprehensive or lost. You know, feelings. I canât blame a person for having feelings. Had he stepped up and said âyou know what, I canât stop thinking about my ex, I want to give it another try with her.â That would have been fine. Not in the moment, but nine months later, I wouldnât be feeling like this. Feeling like Iâve just clicked the last piece of the puzzle into place.Â
It wasnât me. It was, obviously, never me. I wouldnât still be putting myself back together after riding the worldâs shittiest, least exciting roller coaster. I wouldnât be having nightmares that I was somehow still dating him, still subjected to his unfortunately not unique brand of emotionlessness and quiet disdain. Like I was the freak for feeling. When things were really, truly over, thatâs when I learned the most about who he was. I remember sitting at the kitchen counter, having a silent panic attack, wondering where I was going to live, what I was going to do, how I was going to make this all work. The pandemic and riots had hit my neighborhood hard, and I was trying to imagine starting life over when everything else was figuratively and literally crumbling. Granted, I canât remember the conversation word-for-word, but this is my best attempt. âWhatâs going on?â âNothing, Iâm just freaking out.â âWhy?â âI have to move. I have to start over. I have to figure out so many things.â âYeah, well...â âWhat?â âI just donât know why youâre so upset.â âAre you fucking serious?â âYeah. I donât know why you have to have so many emotions.â âDo you mean now, or in general?â âIn general.â I was about ready to fly apart.
âYou donât...understand...why I have EMOTIONS?â âYeah. I guess I just donât see the point.â I donât remember much after that. I remember going back upstairs and crying so hard I vomited. So much made sense: it wasnât that he couldnât empathize with me. Itâs that he saw no value in it. Only his emotions were valid. Anything beyond that was simply not worth caring about. It was chilling, and nauseating, and heartbreaking. My heart broke many times over the course of the month I spent living there after we decided to part ways. I had several conversations like this, where I realized just how long I had been having a one-sided relationship. It also made me feel white-hot, clench-fisted RAGE. How DARE he? NOTHING about his daily life would change. He would wake up in the same bed, go down the same set of stairs, putz around his merry fucking way. He wouldnât have to spend a dollar or dime sorting out what came next. Me, on the other hand? I lost my job the same day I found my apartment. I wanted to claw the paint from the walls I had meticulously restored. I wanted to splinter the floors I had paid to have refinished. I wanted to take all this hard work with me, somehow, to show that I had not truly given up everything. That I had something left. Iâm not writing this for you to feel bad about me. Iâm more than fine. Iâm not looking for words of encouragement. I donât need them. I want him, and other quietly shitty men, held accountable. Nothing my ex did was actually abusive. It was juuuuust under the line, just enough for him to be able to walk away with his hands up, all âGuess it just didnât work out!â And I know, I KNOW Iâm not the only one. He made me feel crazy and stupid and weak and small and pathetic. I contorted myself into impossible shapes, trying to make the relationship work. I did things he would never do, that I would never do again. I moved across the country. Twice. I downplayed all the porn he watched. I pushed the fact that he had an active FetLife account out of my mind. I ignored my dealbreaker about being with a smoker - something he claimed he quit, then started up again in secret, then held against me when I called him out. Making me the bad guy. It got so bad, I suspected I had R-OCD, or relationship-based OCD. That was my only explanation for how I was always so anxious and he was always so calm. It was MY fault that something felt off. He was aware of my tendency to blame myself, and used it against me. Then, he would get to be the patient, understanding boyfriend while I broke down again and again, hating myself for being so âweak.â I wasnât weak. He was keeping me in the dark on purpose, because it was easier to do that than to, I donât know, be fucking honest?!Â
Every time I got really bent out of shape, when the little slights and coldness and disdain had built up to a breaking point, he would let me say (or scream) my piece, and respond: âYouâre right.â Wow. Thanks! I see now that you donât have to do much work on yourself when you just agree with the person who is upset with you. Iâm also not writing this to paint myself as an angel. Yes, I was frustrated and confused and upset, which came out in outbursts of tears and anger. But the difference is, I was trying to connect with him in everything I did. He was trying to push me away. it dawned on me, during one of those horrible post-breakup conversations, that he had fully checked out many months ago. I finally asked him to define a phrase I had heard him use during couples counseling (another suggestion of mine). âWhat do you mean by âIâm deeply invested in your happiness?ââ âWhat?â âWell, like an investment, do you mean time, money, emotions? Or do you just want me to be ok?â âYeah, that.â âOk. so you just want me to be âokayâ.â Iâll take âPerformative Allyshipâ for 200! Iâve told myself I should have known. Should have left sooner. Should-ing myself to death, sparing him from any fault. Remember, heâs the long-suffering partner of an overly sensitive woman. Another wince-worthy excerpt from couples counseling: Our therapist asked us, at the end of a session, to each tell the other something we loved about the other person. I turned, with tears in my eyes, and told him I appreciated how consistent he was. I was always able to count on him being stable and calm. He told me he liked how nice and clean I kept the house. Cool! He could have saved himself about six months of this bullshit if he had just spoken his mind. I wonder, now, if he even had the capacity. But no, he preferred to wait and let me figure it out on my own, until I was so depleted that I was having almost nonstop migraines. But, just like the sibling who canât get into trouble because theyâre âNOT ACTUALLY TOUCHING YOU!!!â, nothing he did was exactly abusive. But it was plenty shitty. Mr. Social Justice. Mr. Feminism. Mr. Donât Comment On That Topic Or Iâll Shut Down Emotionally. Mr. We Have To Move Away From Montana For Vague Reasons Including Racial Tension Which I Never Actually Experienced But Thatâs Reason Enough For Me! And when we got to Philadelphia, it was Mr. Why Donât You Take More Walks Outside Even Though You Get Harassed and Followed? Youâre In The House Too Much (Yeah, Even Though Itâs a Pandemic). Heâd spend hours on the phone talking to the nurses he helped at work. But when a woman in need lived in his own house, ew, gross! Too close to home! Thereâs a line in a very funny Chris Fleming song called the âGrad Student Shuffleâ, which takes the absolute piss out of white male graduate students. A few of the lines apply, but these especially: Call yourself a community organizer Even though youâre not on speaking terms with your roommates! Stand tall and look mindful Even though you're addicted to porn! C'mon! Now close your eyes Say fair enough "Fair enough" Now you are doing the Grad Student Shuffle Iâve gone back and added to this post a bunch of times since I wrote it. I like having a record, even if itâs one-sided. I realize Iâm writing this as much for myself as I am for anyone else. To put my story down somewhere, and not to be too concerned if itâs fair or balanced. What happened to me wasnât fair or balanced. Which reminds me of the worst confrontation we ever had. It was just an hour or two after we decided to break up. It was a sad, but quiet conversation. Iâd be lying if I said I wasnât relieved. I went upstairs to let the new reality soak in, and asked if I could steal a puff from his vaporizer. Not weird, right? What was weird was that I felt like a guest in his room. We kept separate bedrooms, which I highly recommend to any couple who can spare the space. But there is a difference between having the option of separate spaces, and feeling relegated to separate spaces. I didnât feel welcome in his room, and he made no secret of it. So, as usual, I asked to go in. He had left his laptop open on the bed, and I stared off into space as I waited for the vaporizer to heat. I must note, here, that I am not a person who digs. I will run circles in my own brain, but by and large, i leave stuff alone. So I didnât go looking for what was already on the screen, which was a conversation between him and his best friend. I read maybe a couple sentences before realizing, oops, probably shouldnât. It was enough to see one exchange, less than two hours after we had officially broken up. âThat sucks, man. How long do you think til youâll be back on Tinder?â âI donât know. Probably before she moves out.â Iâd like to say I donât remember what happened next, but I do remember. I marched down two flights of stairs, yanked two giant plastic bins out of basement storage, and rage-packed everything I owned outside of my own room in less than ten minutes.Â
He, of course, had no idea. Nuanced as a fucking turtle, he told me he was going out for a walk, and then asked if something was wrong. I let him have it. Everything that had been building inside of my body came spewing out, all at once. I stumbled over my own words, laughing-crying-screaming-asking him what the fuck he was thinking, who the fuck he was, and what the fuck was this relationship? Was any of it even REAL? He had nothing to say. And that, my friends, was my main mistake. Thinking anything I could ever do could ever get a reaction out of him. Could ever draw the sort of love or support or attention that I used to get from him, before he decided to turn off the tap.Â
I spent another month there until I could finally move out. I could tell he was annoyed that I was still there. I remember telling him people arenât disposable. They donât disappear when you decide youâre done with them. Thirty days was the absolute minimum I could manage, and even that was an incredible feat. He asked me to watch the dog, the one he adopted only a couple of months before, while he went out. I remember thinking, âAm I watching this animal so he can go out on dates? No fucking way.â I still donât know, and Iâm glad I donât.Â
Heâs not the only quietly shitty guy. There are many. Iâm sure bunches of them are being congratulated on their engagements or promotions right now, by people who have never dated them. Have never had the soul-wrenching realization that oh, this person who told you you were their dream and their angel and their moon and stars actually decided like a year ago that they just werenât feeling it and didnât have the balls to tell you. But, feel free to question reality in the meantime!Â
Women reading this, beware. There are men who hold up their hands and shrug and say shit like âI wish her the bestâ and know to use phrases like âemotional laborâ to fake enough self-knowledge to start a relationship that they donât know how to finish. I encourage you to ask questions. Find out how much they know about themselves. How long their relationships tend to last. If their friends really know them. If they change jobs frequently. If they move states frequently, and why. But most of all, know yourselves. Know that you deserve to have your questions answered, your emotions validated, and your opinions heard. There are plenty of quietly shitty men to choose from. You donât need to choose one.Â

Gunpowder and Flower Petals (Dante x Reader Fanfic) Chapter 4
Authorâs notes: Back at it again, on sundays now! Have some cute date stuff, I worked very hard on it <3
                                                Chapter Four
                            ~Strawberry Crepes and Coffee Mugs~
Dante, for all his time spent fighting demons and trying not to die, could not remember the last time he was so god damn nervous.
Holding your hand, heading toward a quaint-looking bakery near your shop was somehow harder to handle than facing a horde of one hundred demons. Although that could be attributed to the fact that he was used to such scenarios. Swinging a sword, firing a gun, the spray of blood from some scumbag demon...that was the life he knew. Not this--a life of sunshine, flower petals and soft domestic things like going on a date. Growing up as he did, even dating as a teenager was never really an option. Always back to targets, to fighting--blood, steel, and bullets. Content to just look at magazines and flirt with the occasional woman who crossed his path, which somehow always led to him getting stabbed, beaten, or shot. He got the message right away that maybe love and romance just wasnât in his cards. So...Dante the Devil Hunter gave up on relationships, and stuck to what he knew.
Until today, that is. What in the world was it about you that changed his mind, that brought down some of his self-imposed rules he always abided by? You left him a bumbling mess, which usually Dante would hate and try to avoid at all costs. But like a moth to the flame, he returned almost eagerly to keep this connection to you. Because despite how off putting it was to feel silly and flustered by a woman, it was nice. Maybe he was just getting too old, craving normalcy in his life after all these years of just dealing with Vergilâs messes and fighting demons? Whatever the reason, Dante felt like his heart was ready to burst from pounding too hard, working overtime at even the slightest things that should in no way be that exciting. The soft skin of your warm fingers, the way your eyes lit up when he returned to the store...no woman had given him these feelings before. Even the sight of sunlight glinting off your curls had him light headed and almost entranced.
Maybe you were a fae. One that was enchanting the devil hunter and would someday steal him away into the woods, never to be seen again.
Regardless, he couldnât really care. Dante had gone through all the necessary steps for this date that Trish, Lady, and oddly enough Vergil had deemed acceptable. Upon seeing his brother ready to leave the house in the same leather and dull t-shirt Vergil looked damn near close to bursting a blood vessel. The women had given him a crash course on how to treat a lady on a date, and Vergil had flung the button up at his face with a bottle of cologne. Dante wasnât sure how to feel about his outfit, but at least he managed to trim up his face and pull back the hair. You deserved far better than some scruffy mess to take you out on a date, and yet here Dante was walking down the street for some lunch. Holding hands with a flower girl, trying to justify to himself why it was acceptable to be here.
Seeing you look so happy...maybe it was worth it.
Because Dante couldnât deny the excitement in your eyes, the way your soft lips tilted up in a very obvious display of delight. It was still surprising that such a gentle woman would want to know someone like him, who would be eager to just talk and have some lunch. Oddly enough, he found himself incredibly eager as well--you were kind and made for easy conversation, presence alone enough to make the demons and bloodshed of his line of work seem far away.
The answer to your question, of what his favorite sweets were, was enough to make your face light up like a child on Christmas morning. For a second, Dante thought he saw a new flower appear in your curls, but maybe it was just hidden underneath? You certainly had a talent for pinning flora to your head.
âI love strawberries!â You exclaimed, smile cheerful and hand squeezing his a bit, âI grow some in my garden! Alex and his wife use them for pastries and desserts sometimes, so Iâm fairly positive youâll be able to try some.â
How often his mind seemed to forget, you owned a flowershop. It made sense that more than a few flowers would be grown there.
Dante smirked a bit, expression wry as he met your bright eyes, âYou never cease to amaze, sunshine. I might have to buy some off of you when we get back to your shop.â
God, the way your cheeks pinked ever so slightly at his praises did things to his heart. What in the world was wrong with him? He gave girls compliments all the time, hopelessly silly flirting that meant nothing and just boiled down to him getting shot or punched. But when it came to you...maybe it was different when he was actually trying?
âN...nonsense! They grow super fast, and I...Iâd happily give you some for free.â You disagreed softly, hiding your embarrassed expression behind your curls a little bit. Â
He chuckled in response, noticing a few more flower petals scattering out of your hair as he replied, âCanât deny a pretty girl her business--what kind of guy would I be then?â
You flushed more at that, looking absolutely frazzled. It was incredibly cute, so much that Dante was having issues keeping his own emotions in check. Heart racing, free hand practically making tracks in his goddamn hair...Years of fighting demons hadnât prepared him for dating, not by a long shot. It was so strange--it felt like every single bad habit he had grown accustomed to in the past few years was coming back to haunt him. The way he ate, acted, the recklessnessâŚand it was only day one. How the hell was he supposed to get through hours of trying not to make an absolute fool out of himself?
The answer to that question? He was going to make a fool out of himself no matter what.
You finally reached the bakery before a reply could be formed, Dante making sure to open the door for you like a gentleman would. A smile curled your lips as you stepped inside, now surrounded by the deliciously warm aroma of baked goods and coffee. Lunchtime seemed relatively calm despite the obvious popularity of a local business, tables dotted with an occasional couple or singular human enjoying lunch before going on with their day. It was a far cry from the boring, company owned coffee places Dante usually stopped at for his usual cup. Bright, vivid, warm and inviting--even the man behind the counter smiled eagerly upon your arrival, easily recognizing you and looking absolutely delighted. He was an older gentleman, maybe in his fifties or sixties, with little wrinkles around his eyes and mouth. This was definitely Alex, no doubt about that.
The man in question set down the mug he was cleaning, coming out from behind the counter as he greeted warmly, âY/N! Thanks for coming by, we havenât seen you in a while!â His gaze lifted to Dante, who was still holding your hand after opening the door. The devil hunter expected wariness, maybe worry at seeing someone like him accompanying you at all. But there was only curiosity, and a hint of surprise as he asked, âNever seen you come in with someone before! Whoâs your friend?â
You seemed to be trying your best not to get flustered, but there was a hint of pink to your cheeks regardless. Dante held his hand out for a shake before you could reply, giving enough time for you to gather yourself as he provided helpfully, âDante--you must be Alex, yeah?â
The baker had a firm handshake, seeming pleased with Danteâs friendliness as he hummed, âThatâs me! My wife and I run this fine establishment, and Y/N here is a sort of business partner--she provides wonderful seasonal fruits when our sellers fall short! Donât know what weâd do without her.â
You managed a light huff at that, looking far more collected while being appropriately modest, âYouâre far too kind...you and Bella do a lot for me, some cases of strawberries or blueberries is nothing in comparison.â
By your tone, it seemed like you were trying very hard not to take credit for anything.Â
Alex grinned cheerfully, turning his gaze back to Dante as he continued, âSheâs far too modest for her own good--but enough about that, you two came in for some food right?â The baker looked a bit playful, raising a brow at you and chuckling lightly, âHow about we set up you and your date with some lunch?â
The very mention of âdatingâ made your cheeks flush, a handful of petals drifting out onto the floor from those beautiful locks. Dante tried not to smirk, he really did, but seeing your reactions was just so fucking adorable. Though he did notice that there was definitely more flowers in your hair, there was no mistaking that--he wasnât sure what kind, but they were bright and beautiful as they drifted some soft flora onto the ground. Alex seemed used to it, not minding at all as he gave a hearty laugh and gestured to a nearby table for you both to sit down.Â
âTake a load off--Iâll let you both look at some menus and come by with whatever you want,â Alex hummed, practically skipping back to the counter with a good-natured smile as he winked at you both, âMy treat.â
Dante was flattered to say the least--He may not be the wealthiest, and struggled to manage money without Vergil there to manage the funds, but he would be damned before he let his date pay for the food or whatever they were out doing. This baker seemed determined not to let them spend anything, however, which Dante was tempted to argue with. There was obviously no need--you beat him to it easily.Â
Alexâs firm declaration made you sputter instantly, blinking owlishly at the man as you protested, âB...but I have money, surely you donât need to--â
âNonsense! Iâm not taking a dime from you or your date.â
Alex waved away your protests, heading back into his kitchen to probably tell his wife you were there. He was a pretty nice guy--Dante could respect someone like him, a man who rooted himself in kindness and wholesome business practices. Once upon a time, the devil hunter could have seen himself doing the same thing when he grew up...as a child, he imagined a slew of things as his future. Police officer, baker, business owner, musician--it changed like the wind flowing, sparking with whatever held his interest at that time, or from whatever book or show he was into. He was different than Vergil, who only seemed hellbent on being just like their father. Sword fighting and training were always for fun, something to do with his brother.
Danted missed those days.
Focus, idiot.
Dante turned his attention back to you, not shocked when he found you staring after Alex in exasperation. You slumped in your chair, letting out a low sigh and pushing some curly locks back in a gesture that was almost...shy. It was definitely cute, and those pretty cheeks were still flushed. Dante felt his woes and musings about the past slowly start drifting away, like flower petals on the breeze as he smirked and finally met that wonderful gaze--there was bashfulness there, and a hint of embarrassment. There was so much he wanted to know about what went on inside your head, where your thoughts were going.Â
âPeople really care about you, sunshine,â He mused, plucking up two menus from a nearby holder and holding one out to you expectantly. You looked surprised by his comment, even more so when he continued on, âDonât be too upset with your friend--nice guy that one. Though I gotta admit, he did steal my thunder a bit...here I was gearing up to pay for it myself.â
That made you smile softly, opening the menu to hide your face behind it. Didnât do much good, he still saw a bunch of petals scatter out onto the floor and parts of the table.
âW...well...we might as well eatâŚâ You murmured, clearing your throat a bit and peeking over the object shielding you from view, âFor the record, you...you donât have to do thatâŚâ
âDo what?â Dante replied, raising a brow and leaning his head on one hand.
You flushed a bit more, squirming in your seat and blowing a petal out of your face. He fought a chuckle, enjoying your reactions and mannerisms far too much.
âYou donât have to pay for me,â Was your eventual reply, nose scrunching up a little bit as your eyes darted back to the menu, âI donât want to inconvenience you is all. Itâs...Itâs just the first date and I...umâŚâ
Damn, he felt like a giddy kid at his first school dance. Dante couldnât help himself--a bit of an awkward chuckle escaped his lips, one hand scratching underneath his loose ponytail in a display of his own nervousness.
âWhat kind of gentleman would I be if I made a nice lady pay for everything?â He tsked slightly, a few strands of hair falling loose when he shook his head, âDonât worry yourself, sunshine. Ainât no way in hell you could ever inconvenience me.â
You just sitting here with me is proof that some higher power is giving me a blessing.
Your cheeks flushed again, head ducked behind the menu as you pretended to scan for something to eat as a means of distraction. Dante could only chuckle softly, closing his own menu after picking exactly what he wanted with ease. This place definitely had the fixings to make his sweet tooth happy, no denying that. Pastries, cookies, cakes, bread, sundaes, parfaits...It had been awhile since he treated himself to anything other than cheap pizza and beer. Vergil hated both, but it was all he would allow Dante on their newfound âbudgetâ. Things had gotten easier since their demon hunting was being technically counted as government work while things were so hectic, but...this was a nice change of pace. Sitting in a bakery with a beautiful girl, getting to know her over some sweets and coffee...it seemed so far from what he was used to.
Regardless, a beautiful woman appeared out from the kitchen, hair in braids and looking just as cheerful as Alex was. She was wearing an apron stained with flour, dusting off her hands even as she clutched a little notepad for taking orders--no doubt Alex had informed her of you being in the bakery with someone new, blushing and on a date. Her green eyes lit up when she spotted the table, curious and eager when she took in the white-haired male lounging calmly and you hiding your face behind a menu. Dante tried to make it seem like he hadnât noticed her, tapping your foot under the table to get your attention--she hadnât approached the table yet, and was merely hovering near the counter spying with absolutely no subtlety. Not that he minded--it was just a little odd in his opinion.
You jolted as soon as his foot touched yours, sitting up straight and meeting his gaze. The devil hunter grinned, pointing lightly while hiding it behind his other hand.
âIâm guessing thatâs Bella?â He hummed low, leaning closer to you for some semblance of privacy. Your flushed face was absolutely adorable, but you did put your head nearer to his, listening closely and nodding at his question.
âIt is...Iâm sorryâŚâ Your voice was soft, filled with hesitation as you tried not to make it obvious to Bella that you were talking about her, âM...maybe we should have gone somewhere else...I hope my friends arenât bothering you.â
Dante immediately shook his head, heart squeezing at the forlorn look in your eyes. Precious girl was concerned about his comfort, which was sweet to say the least. But...the devil hunter wasnât bothered, not when he knew damn well Trish, Lady, and Vergil had to be somewhere nearby watching in secret. All three were way too curious to stay behind at Devil May Cry while he went on a date, no doubt about that.
So Dante reached out, gently grasping your fingers, enjoying the way your eyes lit up and cheeks flushed pink in response.
âDonât worry your pretty little head,â He winked, giving your hand a light squeeze before leaning back again, âIâm not bothered at all--Iâd even venture to say Iâm having a lot of fun. I donât get out too often like this, itâs...well, itâs a nice change of pace.â
The way he spoke made you curious, there was no doubting that. You opened your mouth to reply, maybe to ask some questions about his lifestyle or what he meant, but Bella decided in that moment she had enough of standing by and spying. She hopped up from behind the counter, strolling over to the table with a friendly smile and meeting your startled gaze with an eager one of her own.
âSorry to keep you waiting, Y/N,â She greeted, green orbs sliding over to Dante in the next instant as she added, âAlex told me you were here on a date--Dante, right?â
She held out her hand, eyes flashing with a hint of wariness unlike her husband and ignoring the way your face flushed at the very mention of being on a date.. Ah--it was pretty clear she was protective of you, like an older sister that was trying to see if she trusted him or not. He could respect that--honestly had Dante left the house looking as he had in the morning Alex and Bella could have easily mistaken him for a degenerate of some sort.
He shook her hand warmly, offering a friendly grin as he replied, âPleasure to meet ya. Y/N spoke high praises of you and Alex--I can see why. Beautiful place youâve got here.â
His laid back manner of speaking made her relax a bit, a low breath stirring the air as she replied, âSheâs a sweetheart that one. Sheâd speak nice of us even if we served slop here.â
âHey!â You protested, looking thoroughly flustered while looking between the two.
Bella simply gave a good-natured laugh, reaching her free hand out to tussle those beautiful curls. You didnât lean away from the gesture, exasperated expression melting into a rueful smile. Bella almost had a motherly air about her when it came to you, or that of an older sibling. Something about seeing so many kind people surrounding you felt...nice, especially when he remembered what you mentioned at the shop. Losing your mother at a young age, and no mention of your father or any other family...it seemed like you didnât surround yourself with many people, so knowing there was at least Alex and Bella there on your behalf was oddly relieving.
âNow--what can I get you two lovebirds?â Bella finally asked, so innocent she should have been wearing a halo despite the wicked gleam in her eyes. She was enjoying this whole situation far too much, that was apparent.
You cleared your throat a bit, looking at Dante as if expecting him to order first. He merely smirked in response, gesturing with one hand for you to proceed. The devil hunter was a bit curious about what you liked to eat and drink, so this was a learning experience.
âThe hibiscus tea, please...with honey.â You closed the menu, gently handing it to Bella and looking sheepish.
âThe usual amount?â Bella inquired, smiling cheerfully as she wrote it down on the little notepad.
âMhm...and can I get an order of strawberry crepes?â
Damn, that sounded pretty freaking good. Dante hadnât really had something like crepes in a long time, and the idea of it was a bit more appealing than the parfait he had planned. Plus...eating something you liked would be nice, though tea wasnât really his favorite thing. Better to supplement with coffee.Â
âDrizzled with nutella then? Do you want whipped cream?â Bella was asking when he focused again, scribbling everything down on that little pad of paper. The more she spoke the more his mouth began to water. Maybe skipping breakfast wasnât the best idea?
You were nodding to everything, occasionally peeking at him through that curtain of curly hair. The way each strand framed your cheeks was absolutely enchanting, peppered with flowers and petals like a forest fairy sitting in a patch of sunlight. He was zoning out just gazing at you, head still resting on his hand and probably looking like an absolutely slack-jawed oaf. Whatever his expression was it made you flush pink, a cute smile tilting your lips and some more petals falling to the floor in an amassing pile. Man...he was seriously in deep, wasnât he?
Bella didnât seem to mind, only letting out a small giggle and turning to Dante next for his order despite him not really paying attention either. The absolutely star struck expression on his face was definitely easing her further. Not that he noticed.Â
âAnd what can I get you, big guy?â She inquired, tapping him on the shoulder and startling him out of whatever trance he was in. Dante at least had the good graces to look bashful, clearing his throat and scratching the back of his head again in that nervous little gesture.
âU...uhâŚyeah,â He mumbled, coughing once before continuing on more soundly, âLatte for me. And an order of those crepes Y/N decided on.â
You perked up at that, looking absolutely delighted while Bella jotted down the order. The cheerful woman let out a pleased hum, tucking the little notepad away before grinning at the couple trying not to stare at each other.
âIâll have your drinks right out,â She promised, giving you a not-so-subtle wink, âAnd Alex will get to work on those crepes. You two have fun.â
She gave a little wave of her fingers, slipping between the tables with a pep in her step while you flushed pink again. All at once the two of you were left alone, so many questions to ask and things to learn with no real jumping off point. Dante settled back in his chair again, tilting his head as he eyed your flushed face--you were nervous, sure, but also happy by the looks of it. There was a glint of delight in your eyes, and something about your expression radiated a pure joy that left him more than a little breathless and chest squeezing lightly. Hell, your whole presence was oddly...relaxing, in a way that reminded him of sitting in a flower meadow with the sun shining down and a breeze rustling his hair. Which was odd, to be honest, considering the fact that he didnât recall ever being in such a scenario before. Maybe when he was still a child, before things all went to hell?
Donât think about that. Not right now, with her.
Dante let out a slow breath, leaning forward again to put himself at better eye level with you. It made you sit up straighter, little heart probably hammering in your chest as your cheeks gave you away every time. It was charming the hell out of him.Â
âTell me about you, sunshine,â He said, tone low and intimate in that little corner where you both sat, âI know you own your own business--what made you decide to start growing flowers?â
You seemed taken aback by such an upfront question, settling in the chair with your hands on your lap. For a second Dante was afraid he had been too forward in his questioning, but the small, wistful smile on your lips made the fear halt in its tracks. It was the kind of smile he knew well, the one someone wore while remembering something dear to them.Â
You shifted a bit, hand instinctively reaching up to clasp a locket dangling around your neck. It was a pretty little silver thing, with intricate patterns forming into the shape of a flower. The way you clutched it between your fingers was almost instinctive, like breathing or blinking.Â
âMy mother and I had a garden when I was little,â You replied softly, eyes glowing with the sunlight that came out of a nearby window. Dante felt his breath catch at your response, heart growing tighter as you continued gently, âShe taught me how to respect nature, how to nurture seedlings and flora. After she died...its one of the ways I remember her. It makes me happy.â
Damn...he remembered you mentioning the loss of her mother at a young age. That first day in the shop when they met, he had been going there to get roses because his own mother loved them so much. It was one of the first things that made him feel...connected somehow, that sharing of a tragedy. He knew that pain all too well, it was one of the things that made him who he was today, shaping his very existence. That day in the mansion, trapped in a closet and forced to listen as his mother was murdered by demons. The memory alone was enough to make that familiar pain and regret return, as much as he tried to push it down. There was another part of him curious about how your mother died, but asking would be incredibly rude and definitely not something for a first date.
Stop thinking about it.
âShe...sounds like a wonderful person,â He cleared his throat again, leaning on his hands and staring into your eyes as they lifted his way, âIâm certain sheâd be proud--you do wonderful stuff at that shop. Hell--Iâm positive my mother would have adored the roses I bought from you.â
That made you perk up, eyes soft and curious at the mention of his own lost mother. Almost instinctively, you reached one gentle hand out to clasp his, the thrill of it traveling up his spine like a giddy jolt of electricity.
âWhat was she like--your mother?â You inquired, a bit hesitant as well considering the heavy nature of the discussion.
Christ...when was the last time he opened up to anyone about his mother? Despite Trish looking exactly like Eva, he never spoke to her about it. Ever. It was just a fact that hung between them, a mutual understanding. Lady wasnât one for discussions like there either, and Vergil talking about his emotions was entirely out of the question. Part of him didnât want to bare that much of himself to you so early, and yet...it was pleasant, this feeling. To have someone who would listen without judgement, to act normal and human for even a day. Like a paradise away from his job and life, a small reprieve he wasnât sure was deserved. But his mouth opened anyway, the rest of the world fading away while the devil hunter spoke to you. Not feeling like a devil hunter, just...Dante.
âI lost her when I was little too, so I donât remember all that much,â He admitted, blowing a soft breath out from his cheeks, âI remember her being kind, caring...a wonderful mother. She mustâve had a ton of patience to deal with me and my brother while we bickered.â
You perked up a bit in surprise, opening your mouth to ask another question when Bella slid up to the table. The sound of her setting down two cups made you both jump, turning to gaze at her sheepishly while she smirked in absolute amusement. Much to Danteâs dismay, you released his hand, leaving it with a feeling that was oddlyâŚlonely. Not to mention, having someone sneak up on him was a strange sensation, one that would usually prompt him to whip out his pistol or sword. Neither were on him thankfully, and it left Dante feeling a bit out of place as you thanked Bella and slid his cup closer to him.
âThank you so much, these look wonderful.â You beamed, lifting a beautiful tea cup to your lips to inhale the scent. The liquid inside was steaming hot, a pretty color that was different from the usual teas he saw. Whatever hibiscus tea was, it smelled lovely and drifted with the faintest hints of honey.
His own latte looked far too beautiful to drink, the foam on top decorated to look like a leaf. Damn, it was prettier than anything he had consumed in his whole life.
âLooks great.â He complimented, meaning it wholeheartedly as he grinned at Bella.
She nodded, winking at you both again as she replied, âIâll be back soon with your food, donât mind me.âÂ
The woman slipped away again, back to the counter to take the order of a new set of people coming in. Dante made sure to take pause, lifting his own cup of coffee to sample a taste of the liquid inside. It was pleasantly hot and sweet as it rolled over his tongue, a delight after the cheap coffee they had at Devil May Cry in the past month. Honestly, heâd have to come here more often, just to treat himself occasionally after work. The warm atmosphere, the smell of bread and pastries mingling with coffee...it was relaxing, soothing in the strangest way. And yet...he was almost positive that it wouldnât be nearly as so without you there, hair glowing in the sun and drifting in the scent of flora.
He looked at you from over his cup, enjoying the way you savored your tea with gentle sips. You set it down soon after, meeting his eyes with that gentle curiosity as you remembered the question that Bella cut off before.
âYou have a brother?âÂ
Oh yeah...he mentioned Vergil, didnât he? Not by name, but...how much they bickered.
Dante scratched the back of his head, taking another sip of coffee to help clear his throat as he grunted, âSure do...a twin, if you can believe that,â Your mouth popped open in surprise, so he continued on ruefully, âHeâsâŚa bit problematic. We got separated after mother died, and he uhh...made some bad choices. Never really got along with him all that well, but...he stays with me now, helps with the business.â
Christ...he never realized just how much he couldnât talk about with you until now. He preferred to keep you as far away from demon hunting as possible, and Vergil had done so much unbelievably terrible shit that there wasnât much he could say without you being horrified. The Tower, the Qliphoth tree, Urizen, VâŚthere was so much to unpack, even without bringing Nero and the fact that he was Danteâs nephew into the mix. God damn...his life really was a disaster, wasnât it?
Still...everything he said hadnât been a lie. Just...not the exact truth.
You nodded in understanding, sympathy in your gaze as you replied softly, âI mean...is your relationship any better now? I donât have siblings, I canât imagine really going through something like being on bad terms with a brother or sister like that.â
Dante seriously doubted you could have anyone hate you at all.
He chuckled, reaching out to pat your hand as he replied, âDonât worry too much, sunshine. Itâs not perfect, but at least heâs where I can make sure heâs not doing stupid shit. Heâs trying to be better, which is worth something I guess.â
Vergil certainly wasnât perfect, not by a long shot. But his twin had the feeling that all the terrible shit he had done was finally starting to click, even just a little bit.
âI seeâŚâ You murmured, tucking some of that beautiful hair behind your ear as you gazed up at him again. There seemed to be a sudden realization, that beautiful gaze blinking owlishly at him as you added, âWait...you said you have a business too? What sort of business do you run?â
AhâŚfuck, he had mentioned that, hadnât he? What the hell could she tell you about Devil May Cry that wasnât a lie? The name of it alone was pretty strange, telling a story that he had literally no excuses for. And yet...there was a part of him that felt uneasy about the idea of making something up, especially when he was on the first date with you. Trying to start a relationship on a bed of lies seemed so wrong, as hesitant as he was to even admit thatâs what he was trying to do. But...Dante liked you a lot, felt soothed by your presence. Even now he was ready to admit he wanted to do this again, wanted an excuse to keep meeting you. Pushing the demons of his past away, growing close to someone in the hopes of growing near to them...surely he was allowed that much?
Dante let out a low sigh, struggling to form his reply a bit as it tumbled out awkwardly, âErr...ItâsâŚkind of hard to explain. We kind of do odd jobs for the government, nothing illegal I swear...itâs just nothing thatâs completely normalâŚâ
I sound like a complete jackass, a shady one at that.Â
Government jobs? Odd jobs? He sounded like a drug dealer, or a hit man when speaking like that. Not that his actual job was any better--being a demon hunter was no small thing, it was absolutely not the kind of thing he could talk about.
You blinked, not seeming phased in the slightest as he tried to form a coherent response. That surprised him a bit, even when you reached out to grasp his hand again with your warm fingers. Even more so after holding that cup of tea, it was absolutely pleasant.
âI donât think youâre doing anything illegal,â You assured, smiling at the nervous mannerisms he displayed and squeezing softly, âAnd you donât have to explain everything to me, not when it makes you uncomfortable. Thereâs...definitely things I canât talk about right now too...and thatâs okay.â
You smiled warmly, something in your eyes looking hesitant and distant again. That look stirred those emotions in his chest, that ache brought forth by knowing something was definitely troubling that gentle soul of yours. The idea of someone hurting a gentle, loving girl like you was...well, it stirred up that part of him he knew was capable of violence. That protective part of him, the one that just wanted you safe and happy. But he wasnât going to push it, especially not with you respecting his boundaries like you were. To do so would be deeply disrespectful--these things could come in time, and he wanted to learn more, to get closer to you.
So he let out a slow breath, lifting your fingers gently up to his lips. You held back a squeak of surprise, cheeks flushing a deep shade of pink and numerous petals falling from your hair as he brushed your warm digits ever so slightly. That reaction definitely made his own nervousness worth it, made everything worth it.
âWe have time, sunshine.â He agreed, giving you smile that was equal parts sheepish and equal parts warmth, âAs much as we need.â
You nodded once, eyes bright with delight and excitement as he continued to hold your hand. So lost in that moment, neither of you noticed Bella walking up until she cleared her throat, causing you to spring apart like two teenagers caught making out. She chuckled, setting down two exquisite plates of crepes before the blushing duo with absolute mirth glinting in her eyes. Dante wasnât one for feeling bashful, but damn, this was as close as he could get. It felt like he was catching up on a lot of shit he missed out on in life, this whole scenario being one of them. It was nice, in an odd way, to share something so normal and domestic with you.
Bella chortled cheerfully, winking at Dante as she hummed, âDonât mind me--just dropping off some food. You two enjoy now.â
Dante barely managed to clear his throat, managing a gruff, âThanks, Bella.â
You nodded, hands pressed to your warms cheeks as you mumbled, âMhmm...looks great.â
Bella chuckled again, patting your head before sauntering off toward Alex, who was peeking out of a window overlooking the kitchen with unbridled interest in his eyes. Both were absolutely enthralled by this date going on between the two of you, not that Dante could blame them. You two made quite the pair, he a bit scraggly and handsome, rough around the edges. And you... the softest, prettiest looking woman in the shop. Dante wasnât sure what to make of the whole situation--he definitely felt like he didnât deserve you, even so early on in this strange relationship in bloom. You were sunshine and flower petals, he was blood and gunpowder. His whole life was the slash of steel through flesh, of demons howling for his death.
There were so many that would hurt you just to get to him.
But seeing your bright eyes, the way your lips curled softly as you lifted a bite of some absolutely beautiful strawberry crepe to your lips...Then the way you looked up at him, eyes gentle with shyness and curls tucked behind your ear--it was enough to wash the worries away, just for that day. Dante was positive that later he would try to talk himself out of it, if only to keep you safe.
But for nowâŚhe would forget the worries, and share that moment with you and you alone.

Songfic Day 10: Wish You Were Here
Day 10: A song that makes you sad: Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
Betty is having a hard time dealing with her life at the moment. She has never been this far away from her boyfriend but she knows this scholarship is his best chance at getting into a good college. It sucks that he has been able to come home the last few weekends but she knows this is just part of going to school in different townâs.Â
It all wouldnât be so bad if it werenât for the fact that their anniversary was this weekend and Jughead has to stay on campus at the prep school yet again, this time to finish an important project with his new friends, leaving a forlorn Betty to celebrate all alone.
*****
So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from hell
Blue skies from pain
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
âI really am sorry Betts, please donât be angry with me ok? I swear I will be in Riverdale next weekend and Iâll make it up to you. I promise. I just have to get this project done and, since itâs a group effort, I canât bail on them,â Jughead apologized, a heart broken look in his eyes as he facetimed with his girlfriend.Â
It was Friday afternoon and Betty had been so excited that sheâd finally get to see her boyfriend in person for the first time in nearly a month. His schedule had been insane the last few weeks and it seemed to keep him from coming back home lately. Jughead had been awarded a full writing scholarship to a prestigious prep school in the city which meant he would be gone during the week, leaving Betty to trudge through Senior Year without him
And Betty wasnât so much angry with him, just more depressed and struggling with the way her Senior year had gone so far and not having her rock to lean on sucked. Especially when their two year anniversary was this weekend and Betty had spent the last three weeks setting up and planning the perfect surprise anniversary gift for him that he would never see. It just made her feel extremely lonely being without her other half.
Sure, she had FP and Jelly to keep her company, and Charles tried his best to keep her busy by having her assist with the search for The Farmies and her Mother but it just wasnât the same without Jughead here. She was struggling with her feelings on her Fatherâs death and the aftermath of Survival Night but being Betty Cooper, she simply put on a happy face and stuffed it all down.
âItâs ok Juggie. I understand, donât worry about me. I know how important this opportunity is to you and we can always celebrate when you come home next weekend. Honestly itâs no big deal,â Betty tried to assure him, smiling widely to cover her sorrow.Â
âBetts-,â he started but was interrupted by another voice off screen. A female voice, Betty noted.
âJuggie, come on! We gotta go if we wanna catch the previews and I know how you hate to miss them!â Jughead looked at the unseen woman off-screen while Betty clenched her jaw at hearing some other female calling him her pet name.Â
âYeah Nat, Iâll be there in a minute, damn,â He looked back at Betty apologetically. âIâm sorry Betts, Natalie can be a bit impatient at times. The group wanted to go to a double feature tonight to decompress before starting the project bright and early and-,â Betty waved her hand at him and plastered that smile on her face.
âItâs fine Jug, go. Have fun with your friends and donât worry about me,â Jughead didnât look like he believed her but also knew she wouldnât leave him any room to argue.
âAre you sure? I can bail and spend the night streaming a movie with you instead, I donât have to go with the gang,â Betty internally cringed at the term, knowing that âthe gangâ should include herself. And Archie, hell even Veronica. But itâs not the way things are anymore. The gang wasnât going to be the same until Jughead returned, and that was only if he didnât succeed this semester (which Betty knew he would) and get an extended scholarship.Â
âI promise Jug, Iâm fine. Iâll probably just relax this weekend, maybe go see V and spend the night if she can pry Archie off her lips,â Betty giggled, honestly giggled, making Jughead smile.
âOk, as long as itâs ok with you. I love you Betty Cooper,â Jughead smiled as his beautiful girlfriend.
âI love you Jughead Jones,â She returned the smile but hers was coated in melancholy.Â
*****
Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?
âWell B, did you at least tell him about the surprise you worked so hard on for tonight?â Veronica asked, arching her brow as she sipped her mocha chocolate swirl shake.
âOf course I didnât, V! I wasnât going to make him feel worse then he already felt by making him feel guilty. Itâs not his fault that he had a project this weekend,â Betty sighed, picking at her eggs and bacon. She had called Veronica first thing this morning for an emergency girls breakfast to talk about her failed weekend plans.
âJesus Betty! You should have told him! You spent every dime you saved over the summer to rent out the planetarium and arrange that hipster laser show for him and he goes out to a stupid movie double feature with another girl? I mean damn B, why wouldnât you tell him?â Veronica pressed, her eyes softening when she saw the tears gathering in her best friendâs eyes.
âBecause heâs happy, V. He is finally out of the stresses that Riverdale brings and heâs writing full time like he always wanted, how can I ruin that for him? What kind of girlfriend would that make me?â Betty wiped away a stray tear that had fallen onto her cheek and continued, âBesides, he didnât go with just a girl, he said the whole group was going,â she defended lamely, not quite believing herself in that moment.
âOf course he went with a group, B. Jughead loves you and would never step out on you, especially not on your anniversary,â Veronica squeezed her hand reassuringly and smiled. âSpeaking of, what are you going to do about your one night only gift?â
âWell, I already arranged it and rented the place out for the night, so Iâm just gonna go alone and enjoy the show. No use letting all that planning go to waste when I can easily set up a picnic for one and relax for the night,â Betty shrugged, taking another bite of her side of bacon.
âDo you want Archie and I to come with? Maybe I can bring Daddyâs bottle of Chateau Margaux? You havenât lived until youâve cracked open a quarter of a million dollar bottle of red wine,â Betty shook her head at the offer. She appreciated her friends wanting to be there for her, but if she wasnât celebrating with Jughead she rather celebrate alone.
âThanks but Iâll be fine, V. I swear,â
*****
âThanks so much Mr. Simmons, I really appreciate you letting me have the placed to myself tonight,â Betty smiled as the director of the planetarium handed her the keys to lock up in the morning when she left.
âYouâre quite welcome Miss Cooper, anything I can do to help young love. The cdâs are queued up in the sound system and the lasers are preprogrammed so all you should just have to hit this button here and youâll be set,â Mr. Simmons said, handing her the remote control. He smiled again before walking out the door with a wave.
Betty let out a huff, slumping her shoulders a bit as she walked into the main area. She went to work setting up her little picnic, scolding herself for not being able to pack small amounts of food anymore since sheâs been with Jug, before she hit the start button and laid back on her blanket on the floor.
The lights dimmed, the running lights on the floor being the only light in the room, then she heard the soothing sounds of Pink Floydâs âWish You Were Hereâ permeate the air just as the lasers cracked to life like lightning. This is so beautiful Juggie, I wish you could see it....
Betty felt her tears slip down her temples, her sadness finally breaking her composure. She missed Jughead so damned much and this song only served to speak to her heavy heart: breaking it open layer by layer and leaving her bleeding emotions on the floor.Â
She laid there, watching the lasers in her dejection, and thought about the man she loved more than life itself. She thought about all the good times they had, as well as all the bad times and wondered what the future would hold for them.Â
How I wish, how I wish you were here
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl
Year after year
Running over the same old ground
And how we found
The same old fears
Wish you were here
As the song reached its crescendo she heard a familiar voice singing from the entryway. She looked up to see Jughead standing above her, a bouquet of stargazer lilies in one hand and a bottle of wine in the other, grinning as he sang along to the music.
Betty jumped to her feet, not believing her eyes, and ran full speed into him, flinging herself into his arms as her arms and legs wrapped around him as he caught her. âHey there Juliet, nurse off duty?â He whispered, squeezing her tighter. Betty cried against his neck, so happy that he was really here but curious to know how he found her.
âHow?â She asked in a whispered gasp, clinging to him to make sure he wouldnât disappear.
âWell, I talked to the guys last night and when I told them today was our anniversary, Natalie and her girlfriend chewed me out for not skipping out on the project. They practically shoved me on a bus this morning and told me I needed to make it up to you, and to gravel if I had to,â Betty let out a breathy laugh, feeling slightly stupid for her moment of jealousy. He nudged her head from his shoulder so he could look into her eyes, wiping the tears away.
âSo, I spent the day getting your gift ready and when I went to Veronicaâs to find you, she told me you were here and chewed me out again for not being here before and then gave me this,â Jughead chuckled, holding up a bottle of Chateau Margaux. If he knew how much that bottle was worth he wouldnât even have breathed on it, let alone touched it.
âDid you really set this all up for me? How did you even remember me saying this was a dream of mine? We were like 12 when I told you and Archie about that,â Jughead looked around in awe at the lengths that Betty had gone to just to make one of his childhood dreams come true.
âBecause I love you Jug, and I remember everything about you,â Betty kissed gave him a quick kiss and smiled, âHappy Anniversary Juggie.â
