also if this is bad i’m so sorry. i lowkey awkwardly switch between 2nd person and 3rd person pov sometimes so apologies for that. otherwise, i’m really starting to like writing about mack 😌 (slight allusion to sex but there’s no sex actually described just kissing)

macklin had never been to a college sorority formal before, nor did he really understand what it was or what to expect, but he agreed to be your date nonetheless. plus, the look on your face was hard to say no to when you asked him two weeks ago.

the brunette was in his room trying to find the right suit to wear while will sat in the corner on his phone. he knew a little bit from when he was at boston, but he never found any interest in going to those frat and sorority parties, so the rookie was a bit in the dark when it came to this stuff.

will wasn’t much help either.

“i dunno man. i’ve never been to a sorority formal before. i assume it’s the same as any other formal? i’ve been to samy’s soccer banquet,” will shrugged, watching his friend try on his third suit.

“y/n said to just wear something neutral. her dress is pink i think,” macklin explained as he examined the dark navy suit in the mirror.

“i think that looks fine. navy and pink go well?” will nodded.

“i’m kind of nervous. is that bad? i don’t really know what to expect,” obviously, he didn’t want to make y/n look like a fool at her own sorority, so the boy’s nerves were at an all time high at the moment. what if he did something stupid?

“samy texted me back and she said it’s like prom but for college. there will be food and drinks and then you dance if you want. some sororities will do speeches or superlatives,” will read off the text his girlfriend just sent him.

“oh, okay. that’s not too bad then. i’ll be fine,” macklin assured himself and decided on the navy blue suit.

“yeah, it will be chill. you basically get to spend a whole night with your girlfriend,” will grinned and the brunette couldn’t help but smile at the thought. he hadn’t seen you in a few days because of your crazy busy schedules, so having this night to yourselves would be nice.

“yeah, you’re right. it will be chill and we’ll have fun,”macklin was basically saying positive affirmations to himself at this point which made will chuckle. he stood up to help his friend with his suit.

“don’t even sweat it, dude. she’s gonna love you,” the blonde assured and if will thought so, then macklin was gonna believe it.

once he was finished getting dressed, he grabbed his phone to let you know he was on his way over to your dorm. the boy rushed through the house, double checking his pockets that he had phone (check), keys (check), wallet (check), and a small bouquet he decided picking up for you because he knew you liked flowers.

“knock ‘em dead!” will called from the porch as macklin got into his car.

the brunette drove the short drive to the university. being new to driving in the states still and the nerves about tonight made his hands a bit shaky as he turned onto the drive that led to your dorm. he didn’t need to sweat this. it was you. y/n. his girlfriend. there was no reason for him to be nervous about some sorority formal.

he parked in the lot and climbed out, doing a third check that he had all of his belongings. you were waiting in the lobby for him after getting his text about being on his way. the hockey player stopped in his tracks though when he laid eyes on you.

your strapless, silky dress stopped around your ankles where he could see your pretty white heels. your hair was down like it usual was and macklin was pretty sure his pupils turned to hearts.

“hi,” you grinned when he got closer.

“hi..wow..you look..” the boy lost his words making you laugh.

“you look pretty..wow,” you complimented his navy suit.

“s-so do you. wow..i..i’m in awe,” he admitted earning a bright blush on your cheeks.

“you’re sweet. are these for me?” you noticed the bouquet wobbling in his hands. the brunette quickly flushed and handed them over to you.

“yes, sorry. they are.”

you admired the pretty pink and red petals, “thank you. these are pretty. wanna come up for a second so i can put them in water?” it wasn’t really a question because macklin was going to follow you regardless.

the two of you stepped into the elevator. mack’s nerves were now because of how beautiful you looked beside him and he didn’t know how to express it other than telling you and the building desire to kiss you. he followed you down to your dorm. your roommate grinned at him.

“hey mack,” maya waved.

“hey maya,” he waved back.

“look, he brought me flowers,” you showed maya the pretty bouquet.

“wow, brownie points for the hockey player,” she teased a bit which made him flush. he watched you find a vase and fill it with water from your bathroom. you came back out and placed the flowers into the vase.

“like them?” you asked for his opinion.

“i like them,” he nodded.

“i’ll put them by my desk for now. thank you, again,” you pecked his cheek.

“of course,” the boy was glad you liked them and he was glad he decided on getting them the other day because the smile on your face was so worth it after spending an hour at the store trying to pick them out.

“okay, we’re gonna head out now. we’ll be back later,” you called to maya who threw up a thumbs up.

“have fun! don’t get too drunk.”

you went back down the elevator and then out of the building where you latched your arm with mack’s. he rubbed your hand and leaned in to kiss your forehead.

“it’s not far from here,” you explained as you led the way.

“i’ve never been to one of these before,” the boy admitted a bit nervously.

“don’t worry, it’s so chill. you’ll get to meet some of my sorority sisters, we’ll eat, dance, drink some, and then we can leave whenever,” you explained and it eased some of mack’s nerves a bit more hearing you explain it. as much as he appreciated samy’s brief explanation, he also liked hearing it come from your lips too.

the two of you came up on one of the college bars in the area. it was already blasting music that could be heard from outside. macklin followed you inside where you were immediately greeted with security to check your ids. you both got little x’s on your hands meaning neither of you were 21. mack’s gaze flicked around the space that was dimly lit and pumping base through his bones.

“omg, y/n, hey!” a girl greeted you.

“hi jen, you look gorgeous!” you admired your friend’s dress.

“no you do! is this your boyfriend?” she turned her attention to mack.

“yes, this is macklin,” you gripped his arm again and the boy managed a tiny smile.

“nice to meet you. i’m jen, the sorority president. come on in. we have food in the back and drinks at the bar so get whatever,” jen explained.

you quickly led macklin to the back because you were starving. the boy watched you take a plate so he copied whatever you did. you laughed at his behavior.

“don’t be so nervous, mack.”

“sorry. just getting used to it all,” he said. he’d never been into a bar before because he wasn’t old enough first of all and if he was caught underage drinking he’d definitely get a mean punishment from his coach.

“it’s okay. it’s overwhelming, but i’m right here remember,” you assured and some of the worries eased hearing you say that. macklin offered a grateful smile as he followed your lead with the food and then followed you to a seat.

you sat with some other girls and their dates which got all of you quickly talking. the more you talked, the more comfortable macklin became and flushed when a few people recognized him as a hockey player. being next to you made him feel a lot more comfortable too. seeing you look so calm and content helped him do the same and by the time you were done eating, he was having a full conversation with some of the guys without you involved.

“let’s get pictures!” one girl exclaimed when she came around with her camera.

you pulled mack up. he eagerly wrapped his arm around your waist, the two of you smiling wide as the flash went off—almost blinding you guys because it was so bright and the room was so dark.

“aw, you guys look adorable,” the girl spun the camera around so you could see the preview. macklin quickly kissed your cheek.

“i love it, thanks,” you said.

you guys ventured back towards the center of the dance floor to start dancing along with the others. macklin was big on getting to dance, so he took full advantage, urging you to join his energy. you giggled at the way he bounced on his feet and pulled out his best dance moves for you.

when everyone started coming onto the floor, it got warm fast so the brunette lost his suit jacket leaving him in just his dress shirt that was almost halfway unbuttoned by now. his arms were around your waist, the two of you swaying to the beat and being in your own world together.

any anxiety the rookie felt earlier had completely disappeared being in the center of the dance floor with you. all that mattered to him was you in his arms as he spun you around.

“did i tell you how gorgeous you look?” the boy leaned in closer as he spoke over the music.

“you did, yes,” you grinned.

“well i’ll tell you again. you look gorgeous. prettiest girl here,” his words earned a bright blush on your cheeks.

“you’re too sweet, mack.”

“i’m serious, y/n/n. you’re beautiful,” he leaned in closer, still wanting that kiss he hadn’t gotten yet. you saw his request and closed the gap.

the two of you shared a sweet kiss, not caring that there were others around you or watching. your lips felt like heaven against the hockey player’s. he never wanted to let you go, but forced himself to to get some air back into his lungs.

“i could kiss you forever,” he mumbled.

“me too,” and you reconnected your lips for another quick kiss. mack’s hands wandered a bit lower towards your hips and then swiping over your ass. a giggle left your lips at his behavior.

“we should save this for the dorm,” you smiled while directing him away for now. a little pout appeared, but he understood and let you go.

the music picked up again and it had him spinning you around once more. because all of his focus was on hockey growing up, the brunette’s never had an experience of going to an end of the year dance or prom or anything, so he was glad he was getting to make this up with you right now.

as the night winded down, you and macklin decided to leave. he threw his suit jacket over your shoulders for the quick five minute walk back to your dorm. you appreciated his gesture, tugging it closer to your body to hide yourself from the semi-cold evening temperatures.

“thanks for coming tonight,” you smiled as you rode the elevator.

“of course. i had a lot of fun. thanks for bringing me,” mack returned your smile.

“i’m glad you did. better get ready for next semester,” you teased a bit and mack’s heart swelled just a little bit at the idea of coming back to your formal because that meant you wanted him enough to stick around for the next one.

he knew what you two had meant a lot to both of you, but sometimes he got in his head just a little bit wondering if he was good enough for you or not enough because he was some big shot hockey player and he knew what everyone thought about hockey players. he worried he wasn’t the one for you even though you were 100% the one for him. he knew it from the day he met you, so hearing you say that made him burst with joy.

maya wasn’t in the dorm, probably taking the hint that you guys wanted the room to yourselves. macklin was glad because he wanted to continue that kissing you guys were doing earlier.

he watched you hang up his suit jacket like you did every time he brought his suits with him and kick your shoes off. he followed suit and then didn’t waste another second bringing your lips to his again.

that urge he’s had all night only got stronger the more he kissed you. you reciprocated all of his actions and unspoken wants, pulling your hand through his pretty brunette locks and running your hand down his chest.

“i love you,” the boy mumbled between kisses.

“i love you,” you breathed.

he found your gaze for a second, wondering if this was right. wondering if you were sure about him. his thoughts were answered though when you grabbed ahold of his face to kiss him again and lead him to your bed.

needless to say, all of his anxieties were eased by the end of the night and the love he had for you had never been bigger.

Caitlyn picks you up from university most weekends. It's not an issue for her; on the contrary, she enjoys getting to hear about your day as you head back to the Kiramman manor. "Oh, sweet one," Caitlyn murmurs, her palms coming up to cradle your jaw, fingers sliding over your cheeks. "It's okay to be upset. I know you were studying hard for it. Do you want to tell me what happened?"

You swallow, fighting to keep your voice steady. "I understand what we learned for the test, but I made so many small mistakes that I only realized after. They'll take so many points off for that."

"That's okay," Caitlyn soothes, and her eyes are so full of soft understanding that it just makes you want to cry again. "It's okay if you make mistakes. I'm sure so many people made the same mistakes."

"But it's more than that," you bite the inside of your cheek, more tears welling up in your eyes to your horror. "I just feel so stupid. Like I just can't seem to get it. Even when I understand the content, I always mess up somehow."

"You're not stupid," her response is immediate. "You're so, so smart. How many things have you done well on this year? Far more than you've been disappointed on, right?" Caitlyn waits for you to nod before continuing. "Darling. You're upset because you care so much. That's the best thing you can have when you're learning something new. You just have to figure out the ways to study that help you the most, and that can take time. But you don't have to do it by yourself."

You nod again, head buried in her shoulder as you lean across the center console of the car. "Okay."

"Okay," Caitlyn repeats, gently carding her fingers through your hair. "Everything will work out, I promise you. And I'll be right here the entire time. Now, let's go to that one takeout place you always like, yeah? Let's get you some comfort food."

"Thank you," you mumble, angling your head up to press a kiss to the corner of her jaw. "I love you."

"I love you more than words can say, my darling."

     Tierna had been very distracted recently. She was on her phone more and hanging out with the team less. 

     As slick as she thought she was, it wasn’t hard for the team to figure out that something else was at the front of her mind. 

     Right now, everyone was gathered in the hotel lobby, trying to figure out what to do for the night since it was a free day. 

     “Hey T,” Emily bounced up to her. 

     Tierna was quick to shut her phone off and stuff it in her pockets. 

     “What’s up?” 

     “We were gonna head to the mall, then dinner. Wanna join?” 

     “Uhh..” the woman trailed off as she felt her phone buzz in her pocket. Pulling it out she saw a text from you. “I-I think I’m gonna skip tonight. Yeah, I have some things I need to do. By myself. All alone.” 

     Emily looked at her strangely and backed away slowly. 

     “Alright,” she muttered and watched Tierna practically sprint out the door.

     The blonde headed over to the rest of her teammates with a contemplative look on her face. 

     “Has anyone else noticed Tierna acting weird this camp?”

     The question had everyone thinking about the defender’s behavior these past couple days. 

     “I say we follow her.”

     When you and Tierna heard that the next camp was happening not far from your residence, the two of you were excited. With your anniversary so close, it was nerve wracking, trying to figure out how you were going to make things work or just completely reschedule. 

     The two of you had mutually agreed that Tierna should stay at the hotel, though. As much as you both enjoyed cuddling up to each other at night and waking up to kisses peppered across your face in the morning, you still wanted your relationship to be private. 

     You wanted your guys’ relationship to be yours and you couldn’t do that if you had 20+ women and millions of fans bombarding you with questions everytime they see you together. From the stories you’ve heard from T, her teammates sounded like pretty good people, but right now, meeting them just wasn’t your top priority nor was it frequently on your mind. 

     Now that your anniversary had finally arrived, you and the defender had been texting today more than usual. You were setting up last minute details and getting conformations from her, wanting to make sure everything was perfect for today.

     Before you knew it, she was coming in the door with that huge smile on her face. Immediately, you hopped up from the couch, and wrapped your arms around her tightly. 

     “I missed you so much,” you muttered into her shoulder. 

     Tierna placed her hand under your jaw and tilted your head up, giving you a passionate kiss that made your head spin. 

     “Missed you too,” she mumbled against your lips. 

     She moved forward to press another kiss against your lips but you moved back. 

     “I made dinner; your favorite.”

     Before either of you could move, there was a knock on the door.

     With a little reluctance, Tierna followed your orders while you went to answer the door. 

     Taking a look through the peephole you groaned.

     “You have got to be kidding me.” 

     It was obvious you weren’t as quiet as you thought you were as arms wrapped around your waist and she questioned what was wrong. 

     “Take a look for yourself,” you grumbled, moving out of the way. 

     “You have got to be shitting me,” Tierna groaned, dropping her head onto the door. “Maybe if we ignore them, they’ll leave.” 

     “Not a chance Baby T!” 

     With great frustration, the defender yanked the door open. “What do you want?” 

     “We just wanted to see what’s been taking up all your attention,” Kelley says, standing up on her tiptoes to peek into the house. “I can safely say I wasn’t expecting this.” 

     “Look,” Tierna starts. “Can we do this later? I’m busy right now.” 

     “Maybe,” Emily says. “Only if you let us in and update us.” 

     “Okay,” you interrupted. “Our anniversary dinner is getting cold. You will see her tomorrow and you can ask your questions then. For now, I’d like to enjoy this limited time with my wife. Bye.” You ended your little rant with a sarcastic wave and slammed the door shut before locking it. 

     The two of you heard multiple exclamations of surprise and confusions, but you were only focused on one thing.

Funny story actually-

You were Hange’s right hand man (woman?-). But also kinda like her babysitter. (Even if you’re way shorter than her 💀)

You hadn’t really met many people outside your squad since you were always together and you were constantly looking after (and helping) Hange.

She had mentioned Levi a few times, but you never got the chance to cross paths with him until one afternoon.

You see, Hange hadn’t gotten much sleep due to her experiments and research.

She was downing anything that would keep her awake. Meanwhile you on the other hand, were trying to get her to sleep for a change.

“Hange, at least sleep for a few hours, won’t you?” You sighed.

“I will, I will! I’m just really invested in this new discovery I made.”

“You’ve been saying that, yet I had time to get some rest and wake up with you still being awake.”

They both shrug at each other and continue to watch Sol’s pacing before Yerim comes out of her room and gestures the two girls on the couch over. When they approach she pulls them into a small huddle.

“Y/n called me to let me know she’s okay. She’s sick and doesn’t want Jinsol unnie to catch her cold.” The girls sigh with relief but they can’t help but be worried about you.

“Poor Y/n unnie.” Jiwoo chimes in with a pout before they feel a presence right behind them. Yerim looks up with a gulp and the two best friends turn to find none other than Jinsoul looming over them.

“Why poor Y/N? What’s wrong with her?” She looks equal parts angry and concerned.

“Nothing!” Yerim blurts out loudly. The three exchange a look with each other when they see how unimpressed Jinsol is.

“Guys please. She won’t see me and she keeps cutting our calls short. At least tell me what I did wrong so I can make it better.” 

It’s hard for Yerim to see her typically bright friend so sad. Her form was much more closed off than usual and she stood shrunken into herself with her arms protectively wrapped around herself. She looks to the others, who are giving her defeated looks before sighing,

“She’s fine, okay? She’s just got a little cold is all.”

Jinsol looks up in disbelief. Her mind racing with possibilities. There’s no way you were shutting her out like this over a little cold. Her anger only gets bigger when she thinks more about it. There was no way you were just sick, so she grabs her jacket and storms out of the dorm and makes her way to your place. 

Up until now she wanted to respect your space and didn’t come to see you but it’s been four days at this point and she can’t take it. It makes her even angrier that you’d call Yerim before her.

Was this your way of breaking up with her? Maybe you wanted to leave her without having to explicitly say so. Well not if she can help it.

She rushes to your apartment with vigor in her steps and practically bangs your door down. You hear her from you bedroom but you weren't expecting anyone so you stay in bed.

Sol pulls her spare key out of her wallet and enters your apartment like a tornado. When she reaches your bedroom she slams the door open only to stop in her track when she sees you sitting up frightened in bed.

"Sol-ah what are you doing here?"

Jinsol takes you in. There is sweat on your brow and face and deep bags under your eyes. She observes the trash bag you had placed next to you that is now filled with dirty tissues.

It annoys her to no end that she finds you so cute right now. Her trance is broken when you release a loud sneeze that forces your whole body forward.

"So you are sick for real." The look on your face is dumbfounded before you realize that she must have forced it out of Yerim and not believed it.

"I mean why else would I be living like a shut in right now." You giggle a little hoping to ease the tension but the furrow in her brow never wavers.

"Why wouldn't you just tell me you were sick. I could've taken care of you! But instead you left me guessing. Made me think you were tired of me!" She's not quite yelling but her voice is loud and very upset.

"Baby..."

You're a little at a loss. You want to comfort her and reassure her that you love her but you don't want to touch her. The whole point of avoiding her was to protect her from catching your cold.

With Jinsol glaring at you from your doorway and the overwhelming urge to have physical contact with her getting to you, you start to cry. She wavers in her anger enough to see the way your tears well up in your eyes.

Your girlfriend watches your inner turmoil and the way you wring your hands. She takes a step toward you and you recoil.

"I just don't want to get you sick. I just want you to hold me right now so I can tell you how much I love you. But I won't be the reason you catch a cold so just go Sol. I'll call you when I'm better."

You look so tiny hugging your chest to your knees with your head hanging low. All she wants is to make you feel better and apologize for overreacting.

Without a word Jinsol turns on her heel and walks into your kitchen. There is hardly any noise as Jinsol makes you a chicken broth to drink and grabs you a bottle of water. When she rejoins you in your bedroom, she lays the bowl in her lap and begins to spoon feed you the broth. You try to shy away from her but she grabs you by your hips and slides you closer so your knees touch hers.

"Open, baby." There is no more malice in her voice and she looks rather ashamed while she focuses on feeding you.

As instructed, you open your mouth for her and lean forward to meet the spoon halfway. All the while you are doing your best not to breathe your germy air in her direction. Jinsol leans forward in an attempt to kiss you but you hold up your hands to deter her. 

Deciding she really didn’t care how sick you are, she kisses the hand you put up before taking it into her own. In the moment she takes advantage of your shock and kisses you on the lips. You want to push her away and nag her about how she could get sick but with her lips on your, you just can’t find the fight you once had.

“Jinsol, what are you doing?”

“Well I’m here now and I’m going to take care of you. Screw a cold. If I want to kiss my own girlfriend or cuddle her after almost a week apart then that’s what I plan on doing.” 

Another spoonful of broth reaches your lips before she sets the bowl aside. She turns back to you and hugs you while descending against your pillows. Sol wraps you up in her arms like a warm blanket and holds you for a good hour before getting up to continue taking care of you. 

She lounges with you, makes you food and makes sure you take medicine, no matter how much you hate it. You have to admit that you feel a lot better the next morning, having been taken care of and overall pampered. 

“Sol baby, I feel a lot better! Let’s go out today! After we disinfect everything I touched first, let’s go eat.” 

You stand over her, chipper as ever. Jinsol groans loudly and when she speaks her voice cracks a bit. Uh oh.

“Sol?” 

You tug the covers off of her head to see she looks fine for the most part but her nose is a little red.

“Sol are you feeling okay?”

“ACHOO!” Jinsol sneezes so fiercely it jolts her body up as she lies before you.

Finally, summer break. It’s been a while since I was able to go home. Having to attend high school rather far from my home in Seoul, I never thought that I’d adjust to the new environment. Fortunately, I wasn’t entirely alone, since I stayed with my aunt for the four years of my high school life. School wasn’t so bad, but the homesickness is what killed it for me. Even though it was my parents' idea to send me a rather vast distance—me not being too excited about it, but I knew I wouldn’t get my way in the end—there was some good that came from it. I snort, turning off my phone and placing it back down on my lap as I go back to staring outside my left-hand window again. Meet Cha Eunwoo and Moon Bin, my two best friends. The only reason I got through high school how I did without major setbacks. Sure, there was the occasional homesickness and all, but had I not met these two, I probably wouldn’t have even attended and graduated. 

Being so far away from the place I grew up never really suited me, and they saw it right away from day one how lonely and upset I looked. I didn't seem to fit in, especially since I skipped a grade and was placed in classes that were very advanced for me. Not that I minded the vigor, but it was hard for me to socialize, let alone make friends. 

That’s when I met them. Freshman year in homeroom before my first literature class. Moon Bin, a boy with parted, coppery-golden hair accompanied by his shy, puppy-eye smile and sweet nature, offered me an empty seat next to him in class, even going as far as to share his textbook and asking how I found the school. No doubt, I was embarrassed and immensely shy, stuttering over my words and failing to meet his soft gaze. However, he didn’t make fun of me nor find me odd. All he did was smile, laughing lightly at my slightly flustered state. He stuck his hand out, introducing himself (most people just call him Moonbin or Bin) with that smile of his, thus the start of our new friendship. Since then, he became someone who always knew how to cheer me up when I was feeling down. No moment was ever dull with him by my side. 

Eunwoo, the tall, brooding black-haired and charismatic student almost everyone knew (and crushed on) of, was usually with Moonbin when we hung out together, but he normally kept to himself. Though quiet and sometimes reserved with his intimidating looks, it didn’t take long for him to break the ice with us, the three of us becoming close friends. Promising to stay like this until we went to college and beyond. Regardless if we all diverge and tread different paths, we would always converge and come back to one another. 

Four years flew by and graduation was upon us. Just like that, the two became like family to me, my ride-or-die duo. The two who were able to turn my world upside down, finding solace in a time where I thought it was nearly impossible for me to.  

My thoughts are interrupted by my “Move” ringtone—yes, I’m a huge Lee Taemin fan—looking down at my phone again to see it’s my brother calling. I sigh, picking up the call.

“What?” 

He gasps dramatically. “Is that any way to address your loving older brother after being away for so long?”

I snort, shaking my head. “Loving my ass, oppa. How are mom and dad?”

“They’re fine, living. Didn’t you tell them you’re coming home?”

“Nope, I don’t even text them that often. You already know this..”

He sighs. “Yeah, I figured.” 

There’s a slight pause on his end, but he continues. “You took the three-thirty train, right? So you’ll be here around five or so?”

“Yeah, give or take.” 

I look out the window again to see the endless stretch of greenery and flowing springs, sometimes even children playing in the fields. I grin mischievously, deciding to poke fun at my brother when he doesn’t respond right away. 

“What, you miss me?”

He makes a sound similar to throwing up. “As if. I got so used to the peace and quiet. I’m not ready for it to go away.” 

“Yah!” I realize that I had yelled a bit too loudly and eyes were now trained on me, and I bow my head in apology. I lower my voice, “You’re such an asshole.”

“Oh, I know, but you still love me anyway.”

“Shut up.”

I can hear his laugh resonate through the phone and a smile unknowingly tugs at my lips. I wouldn’t say it out loud, but it’s true. When I lived with my aunt in Busan for the duration of high school, I missed Jaehyun a lot. Though two years older than me, he didn’t seem to alienate me the way my parents do. While I hate the notion that they spoil Jaehyun endlessly and let him do as he wishes, I won’t lie and say that he was a prick about it. He could’ve been, but he never came off as selfish. I’m really close with my brother, shocking as it may be. Sibling relationships are like that—one minute you want to strangle them with their intestines and the next you’re singing duets together. Crazy, but that’s how it is for us. My parents don’t really pay me any attention, so Jaehyun decides to do that instead. Not complaining though. I’d rather take his pranking and teasing over my parents’ demands and reprimands any day.

“Aight, I’m heading out for a bit. Text me when you arrive.”

I smile again. “Will do, but make sure to get me food!”

“Let me think…” He hums, and I can practically sense the smirk on his end. “Nope. Get your own.”

“Oppa!”

Jaehyun laughs. “See you in a bit, Hyuna. Get here safely. Bye!”   

He hangs up the call before I get a chance to retort, and I scoff. Typical of my brother. He knows how much I enjoy street food, and every time he goes out, it’s almost certain that most of the time he stops somewhere to eat. Did he ever bring food back? Sure, but by the time I’d get to it, most of it was gone anyways. That only lasted a little while before I had gone upstate anyways, so he had more food for himself, I guess.

As the train barrels down the tracks, I feel my heart racing in excitement, but there’s also a slight ounce of dread. I really don’t know why. I want to believe it’s because I’ve been away for too long, but part of me knows it’s the fact that I’ll have to face my parents again. Knowing that I only have two months to decide where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do, I know the bitter truth is that those decisions won’t be left up to me. Last time, I was sent to Busan.

God knows where I’d be sent to now.

“Final destination of the KTX Busan-Seoul train at Seoul Station is approaching and will arrive at 05:30 PM. The doors to alight are on the right hand side. All passengers are requested to dismount the train upon arrival. Thank you.” 

That’s my stop.

Gathering my bag and hand luggage, I patiently wait for the train to pull up at the station. Seeing the familiar shops and buildings around me makes my legs bounce up and down in both excitement and anticipation. 

Four long years away from Seoul...

Before getting off, I quickly text the group chat and then my brother, letting them all know that I’ve reached safely. Side-stepping the other passengers exiting the subway doors, I carefully land onto the platform with my luggage in tow. I breathe in the air around as I stretch my arms up into the sky, the grin widening on my face.

It sure as hell feels good to be back home.

I try my best to maneuver through the crowds, but it doesn’t stop the rush of people knocking into me. At times like these, I curse my genetics for favoring my older brother instead of me in terms of height. Eventually, I come to a clearing and when my eyes glance upwards, I spot a rather familiar dark brown-haired six-foot-tall male amongst the small crowd waving me over.

“Hyuna, over here!”

I gasp, my eyes widening. “Oppa!”

He smiles as I begin walking towards him, my feet hurriedly moving across the concrete. The distance between us shortens and I abandon my luggage as he opens his arms wide. 

Only for me to sucker punch him in the stomach.

He yelps in pain, grimacing as he holds his abdomen. “Shit, that hurt. What has Aunt Sua been feeding you up there? Rocks?”

I smack his shoulder, my blood slightly boiling in anger. “Yah, why didn’t you tell me you were coming?! Do you know how much money I blew off for the bus fare?”

He straightens his back before going to rub his shoulder, then behind his neck.

“Fine, fine. My bad. I wanted to surprise you, but I guess that didn’t work, did it?” 

I cross my arms over my chest, huffing in annoyance. He sighs, nodding.

“Okay, okay, I’ll compensate you. Dinner’s on me.”

At this I grin, blinking excitedly. I grab onto his arm and shake it vigorously. “Really? You mean it? You’re the best, oppa!” 

“Look at this brat..” he taunts, shaking his head. In a flash, he headlocks me and rubs the top of my head harshly with his knuckles, upsetting the neatly-tied auburn ponytail. 

“Yah! Quit it!” I smack his arms and flail in protest, but he chuckles, saying this is what I get for cunningly finding a way to exploit him the minute I stepped back into Seoul. 

What can I say? It’s a talent. 

He lets go eventually, and I try to smooth down my already-tangled hair. I grumble incoherently but Jaehyun pulls me into his embrace, wrapping his arms around me. His free hand gently pats the side of my head in comfort.

“Welcome home, sis.”

I stand there stiff for a second before hugging back. He squeezes me tighter and I find myself smiling into his shoulder. 

“Good to be back,” I whisper. 

We stand like that for a moment before he pats my back a couple of times, us pulling away from each other soon after. He reaches behind me to grab my hand luggage as he shoulders my bag. I tell him that I can carry them just fine, but he starts walking away from the platform to the parking lot. I call out after him as I run to catch up, and I can see the corners of his mouth twitch. Jaehyun leads me to his car, a sleek matte-silver convertible Mustang. My mouth drops open in shock at its stunning beauty, my body forcing itself to remain composed for the sake of avoiding public self-embarrassment. 

He throws my luggage in the back seat before he turns to me, smirking at my expression. “You like it?”

“Shit, do I like it? I love it!” I run my fingers over its metallic surface, the silver exterior gleaming in the evening glow. Grinning, I stare up at my brother who catches my gaze as I stand next to the driver’s seat, my fingers already curled on the handle.

“Can I—”

“No.”

“Please—”

“Nope.”

I pout as I pull my hand away and step to the side. Jaehyun chuckles, rubbing my head playfully before getting into the driver’s seat and starting the car. The engine purrs to life as my brother pulls out his shades and wears them. He looks at me and cocks his head to the passenger seat. 

“Don’t just stand there. Get in.”

Smiling, I quickly make my way over to the other side and slip into the passenger seat. I barely have time to buckle in before Jaehyun speeds off. I scream in fright, but he laughs heartily, telling me to let loose.

With the wind harshly whipping around us, I close my eyes and tilt my head upwards, absorbing the remnants of my childhood in a place I’ll always call home. A place where my heart always feels at ease.
