Danny: you know, by your logic Maddie is equally as guilty for abandoning you as Jack. She also never visited you while you were in the hospital.
Vlad, had put his infatuation with Maddie aside but still kinda had feelings for her:
Vlad: you're right
Danny, not used to an adult agreeing with him: I-- huh, I am?
Vlad: yes. If Dr. Walker had cared about me -- even if only as a friend, she would have tried to remain in contact with me. But she didn't. She is also as equally guilty for the accident that took your life too since she also failed to properly check over the portal for flaws and any improper wiring.
Danny: wait- wait, i mean--
Vlad: this means only one thing
Danny, bewildered: ???
Vlad, extinguishing all lingering feelings: I have to kill her too (somehow)
Danny: nO.
i don't really want to get too logical about it, but perhaps another "above the table" reason for this battle not being centered around getting redemption for the ratgrinders is because this is a show meant for public consumption and "persuade your enemies to desert their cause and join you" was literally the trick of the final combat for the last intrepid heroes season. maybe there was an implicit understanding among the cast that the same gimmick would be perceived by some as being repetitive
and honestly?? i think the neverafter team had a helluva lot better shot converting the princesses to their side than any of the bad kids had in this battle. key members of the squad (okay, not tim, rip his conversation with rapunzel) made inroads with the princesses through good faith interaction with many of them earlier in the season. elodie and mira were the easiest gets because of elodie's history with gerard and mira's lack of true devotion to the cause, but ylfa had a genuine SHOT with la bete and pinocchio got very close with cinderella (who i think may have come over anyway once her allies were down, if i remember right?)
but there isn't a single ratgrinder they have that kind of relationship with. they've been pretty out-and-out hostile, despite moments such as adaine saving ruben from disintegrate and kristen offering maryanne gifts. maaaaybe you could make an argument for ruben and wanda, but brennan pointed out that once wanda showed up with his enemies and ATTACKED ruben's friends, it was over. oisin seemed like a potential option earlier in the season, but then he pulled the rug out from under adaine and tried to murder the entire student body via nepotism. there was no friendly relationship left to capitalize on after that. and maryanne has been characterized as having such an impenetrable mental wall that it's hard to guess where's she's at, even for the other ratgrinders.
plus, there's the whole basic conceit that the ratgrinders' minds are not completely their own. their agency has been traded away to a nameless god of rage. who's to say any persuasion check could overcome that? honestly, i think if it was a realistic play, brennan would have encouraged the players to try it, like he explicitly did for neverafter, laying out a mechanic for it. maybe we'd know more if kristen hadn't gotten a nat 1 on her buddy insight check, but i think that was the moment that any diplomatic level to this combat went out the window, because the dice dictated that kristen couldn't see buddy in there, and to willfully push ahead with that line of thinking would have been close to meta-gaming. they are playing characters as faithfully as possible, and those characters are stressed-out kids! they don't have the same emotional maturity of a 32-year-old divorced frog prince who really wants to be amicable with his ex-wife
i did a replay of the final season with a friend today and i noticed that if you don’t say anything in the woods and violet chooses to shoot lily on her own, the animation is more dynamic than when you tell her to do it
omg, idk if you meant to do this but Will's haircut.. um.. it's very gay early 1990s, between 1989 and 1993 every skinny white gay guy had that cut (and a mustache)
I did not do that on purpose but here you go, why not seal the deal 😂
things i noticed that i haven't seen anyone mention quite yet
• Aegon's scenes this episode showcased his character quite well! They showed the two faces of him: the petulant boy king when he deals with his family—who acts cruelly out when he doesn't get his way—and the people pleaser king who wants to make everyone happy because it makes him feel adored (and worthy of the crown).
• The showrunners kept their word and have actually "grown" the dragons—Rhaenyra and Syrax's scenes showcase this.
• Helaena's lack of guards that would otherwise be a weird, tropey storytelling device is established well beforehand by Cole's obvious disbelief at "this is the last time" (indicating he's heard it before and thus been shirking his duties), Cole and Aegon's cavalier meeting that seemed to shake Otto at its brazenness and the former's abandonment of his post, and the inclusion of Aegon's drunken group guarded by the other kingsguards. It was a spark travelling up a trail of gunpowder the whole time, and we didn't even notice. (BONUS: Alicent has also been dismissing her staff for privacy and perhaps to avoid Larys' reach)
• Aemon reasoning away his utter shock and horror at his actions with the idea to go to war—to justify the blood on his hands with more. But then to see his grandfather push him back to where he was before his brother's investiture, where he lusts after the throne but understands he must be patient. Ironic.
• Obviously, the parallels between Alicent's mourning at the altar of the Seven versus Rhaenyra's funeral. Both worshipping completely different gods with different funerary rites, but both see only sadness in the flames.
• Alicent's seeming hypersexuality (not really, but comparatively) with Cole being—IMO—a response to the sexual assault/harassment she's been receiving from Larys. Their conversation immediately makes the scene stagnant and uncomfortable, and all of the following scenes with Alicent's household staff are similarly eerie (and probably part of the reason why she sent them away).
• Cole clearly feels more and more comfortable openly speaking his mind, to the king, to the small council, to whomever. Surely this won't come back to bite him
i kinda love just how often art looks like absolute hot garbage from a dumpster until it's like... 90% done. because after spending so long hating it, and pushing yourself to trust the process, and muscling through the insecurity and discomfort, that moment when it finally COMES TOGETHER??? is so bloody glorious, it makes all of that itching feeling so worth it.
like this applies to just about anything I think (maybe more to things with a visual- or tactile component, but I can see it for written media as well) but right now it's is specifically about an amigurumi doll i'm making-- and for like the last three hours i've been working on it, it's been looking like a horrible little old man, a nightmare-realm chibi-version of Geri-from-Pixar-fame, and the second i placed the first little chunk of hair over the forehead, it became instantly adorable, and I can't wait to show off the finished thing ❤️
for your consideration. Human tilly and human froggy and their horribly cursed little beast pearl <3
