A few months into dating, Evan asks Tommy to a family dinner at Sergeant Grant and Captain Nash’s house. Tommy’s never been nervous when meeting a significant other’s family or friends, but he sure as Hell is terrified to meet Evan’s pseudo-parents. 

You know, the ones Tommy hijacked his own helicopter for because they saved an entire ship of people from being murdered by pirates, blown up, and drowned in the middle of the ocean where they’d probably never be found?

It didn’t matter that he had met them before. How is he supposed to feel normal about meeting two people like that? 

“I can practically hear you spiraling, and I feel like that’s supposed to be my job,” Evan interrupts his, well, spiraling. Tommy turns toward him from the driver’s seat with furrowed eyebrows. 

“I’m meeting your entire family together for the first time. How is this about you again?” Tommy asks. Evan must know he means well because there’s a soft smile on his face and he reaches out to grab Tommy’s hand. If he was a lesser man, they might have been shaking. He feels like he might start when Evan’s face turns more serious. 

“You know I haven’t had the best track record with women…” Evan begins.

Tommy can’t help but interrupt. “Good thing I’m not a woman…”

“Not a woman, I know,” Evan finishes the inside joke with him. He’s running his thumb in soft circles over the back of Tommy’s hand, spelling out words Tommy wishes he could decipher. “You’re different in more ways than that, though.” 

Tommy doesn’t speak even though Evan expects it if the long pause he allows says anything. 

“You might not be part of the 118 right now, but you’re as good as family. You’ve worked side-by-side with Hen and Chim, you were part of the first team that Cap led in L.A., and your friendship with Eddie has only grown since we got together.” Evan sighs. “I’ve always been terrified of not being enough so I’ve pushed people like you away. People who I respect, who I envy, who I wish I could be like so that they can’t replace me.” 

“No one can replace you, Evan,” Tommy inserts, even though he knows he doesn’t have to. Evan knows that, but Tommy will never stop reminding him. 

“No, they can’t,” Evan says confidently. Tommy squeezes his hand with pride. “But that makes this—us—all the more serious to me. You’re sticking around for as long as we’ll have each other, and probably after that.” Evan takes a deep breath and, with vulnerability bursting out of his blue eyes, says, “I guess, this is my way of saying that I want you in this family whether you’re with me or not.” 

Tommy practically melts at the words. It’s what he’s wanted since he first hopped in that helicopter, since before his friendship with Eddie or his relationship with Evan. He’s missed Hen and Howie, and he wants to laugh with their wives about stories from their pasts. He wants to get to know the first Captain he met who deserved to be in his position, and say thank you to the first cop to shake his hand when he finally—and accidentally—came out in a fit of frustration. 

Evan knows exactly how much the sentiment means to him, and to hear him say it out loud, makes emotion swell up in his throat. He knows it’s too soon to talk about forever, but he’s never felt something so close. 

“Plus, if they’re your family, too, they can’t be mad at me for not telling them I was bringing you because the invite was implied.” 

With the moment thoroughly broken, Evan jumps out of the car and runs around to open Tommy’s door. Tommy sighs as he exits, but reaches out to hold Evan’s hand anyways.

“You’re an idiot,” Tommy mutters with a shake of his head. 

There’s so much fondness in the words, that he might as well have said I love you. 

Evan’s grin barely falters, and he kisses Tommy’s cheek quickly but firmly. “Yeah, but I’m your idiot.” 

It’s not an I love you, too but one day, Tommy thinks it might be.

I want Buck smiling every time he says Tommy’s name because maybe it isn’t forever and maybe he’s not even looking for forever anymore but he’s so happy and he’s so light and being with Tommy feels good

I want Tommy to keep calling him Evan, because before Buck was Buck he was Evan and Evan deserves to be happy to be treated so softly and lovingly and Evan deserves to be free.

I want Buck to be happy. To be happy and free and queer in the way we all deserve.

I like to think that during Buck’s first year at the 118, he was enthusiastically taking any shift he could because he loves being a firefighter and his real life is lonely.

Then one day, he comes into work and Bobby is just like, come with me. They get in Bobby’s car and he drops Buck off at his house, “If you keep going like this, you’re going to burn out. Take the time.”

And then a few hours later, the 118 comes back from a call and Buck is in the loft. Making a grilled cheese.

Bobby gives him a look like, what the hell. Buck’s eyes go wide and he asks genuinely, “You meant all day?”

obsessed with baby queer buck and the hang-ups he probably doesn't even realize he has, let alone acknowledge.. newly realized bisexual evan buckley who didn't stop once to consider long-term commitment to a man he dated for 6 months as a viable option until josh spelled it out for him. and we've seen buck navigate romantic relationships before. he didn't do things by half-measure or shy away from grandiose declarations with abby or taylor. he knew he loved them without the need for an outsider's perspective. i don't think the cautiousness displayed in 806 was linked to tommy as an individual/lover so much as it was about building a life with a man — still a foreign concept, still a bit alien. not something buck could really envision for himself and by himself, unprompted (just like he remained unaware of his attraction to men until he was made to confront it with a kiss). that moment of hesitation wasn't because he was unattached to tommy or their relationship, quite the opposite according to the follow-up questions: if buck wasn't in love already, he was at least willing to be. yeah, he needed a little nudge from josh to reassess his feelings, to jump over that last barrier, but the very moment things clicked in his mind, buck was ready to cement their relationship, ready to wholeheartedly pursue a future with tommy, serious enough that he brought up the possibility of marriage someday (another first! not just first potential husband, but first potential spouse ever!!) — because buck doesn't see much value in waiting once he figures out what he wants.

that poll going around about which character would be most likely to have a tumblr is making me think about an AU where Buck - Evan - joins tumblr while roadtripping around, after a woman he spends a couple nights with tell him about it

after first, he posts photos he's taken during his travels, occasionally makes text posts about how he's feeling, and then he discovers the hornier parts of the site and starts contributing

and in LA, starting to explore his own sexuality, is one Tommy Kinard, who googles and googles and this website seems like no one uses it and it's pretty anonymous, and unlike the dating apps there's no expectations. so he makes an account

he starts going through a few tags and he discovers Evan's account, and he's enthralled by the content Buck posts: he seems so free. he devours all of the content Evan has on his blog. eventually Tommy works up the courage to comment on a few of Evan's travel photo posts and then, after he's had a few interactions with him, likes some of Evan's more risque ones

Evan's s flattered by the attention and how sikorsky1942 likes every part of his blog because usually people are just there for one thing, and they start chatting

when they talk sikorsky doesn't mention Evan's other photos, but he keeps liking them and Evan keeps posting them and if there's ever one where he doesn't, Evan finds himself weirdly disappointed

there's one time - when Evan posts a video of himself jacking off, only a few seconds long, and sikorsky messages him "I wish I was there" and Evan jumps on it, asks what he would do

"I'd touch you. Learn what you like. I want to hear you."

Evan sends him another video, makes sure to capture audio this time, because this guy is his friend and the idea of someone learning him - learning his body - he's really into that - wants to moan sikorsky's name but realizes he doesn't know it - maybe one day

but sikorsky doesn't respond and Evan bullies the rejection he feels back down his throat, especially when he does come back a day later with a message that doesn't acknowledge the video at all. maybe sikorsky didn't like what he heard. Evan still gets to keep his friend

usually sikorsky speaks in the vaguest terms, couches a lot of his stuff in hypotheticals especially when it comes to his personal life, but Evan learns a few things. like how sikorsky likes helicopters - his username is a reference - and he's funny, can cheer Evan up after a bad day. and, the one time that Evan coaxes him into sharing a photo - no face required - ridiculously built, Evan wishes he had those abs, and asks how sikorsky got them. repeats sikorsky's words back to him, from a month ago - "damn I'd touch you"

it's a couple days before sikorsky answers and Evan wonders if he scared him off but then he gets the notification. two, actually

the first saying "I'm a firefighter. In LA."

and then, a few hours later when Evan was still sleeping (at 4 am in LA, he did the math) - "Maybe we could meet up if you're ever nearby."

and Evan steers the Jeep towards LA
