This might be a controversial opinion but I actually think Star Wars fans using terms like "Filoniverse" or "Mandoverse" as if they're somehow separate from the rest of Star Wars canon is fucking stupid cause like that's just not how "____verse" is supposed to be used. Where I come from we use names like that for franchises that have big multiverses with multiple continuities to tell them apart. Star Wars canon does not have and will never have a multiverse no matter how bad some people seem to want it to for some reason. It's all one continuity there is simply no need for it.

I have tons of things to say. But can I say this: do you think Izu is more used to prop others characters and no one does that for him?

Look not saying people need to worship him. But Shoto can traumadump on Izu, but Izu can't ever talk about himself or his struggles.

And I'm not sure if is intentional or not. (I do think Hori is a bad writer, I do think Hori hates his mc but...at the same time, to hate a character you need to think about him...sometimes feels he never thinks about Izu)

In a very real sense, this honestly is a lot of Izuku's characterization at this point; sacrificing himself to help others, both as a person and as a character.

Or, to be pithy: Izuku's goal in life seems to be to literally martyr himself for others, in every possible way he can, and there's no sign that's ever going to stop.

There's also the writing, which uses Izuku as a convenient point to support a character or an idea, as a not-so-subtle way to tell the audience that, 'You should like this!', and to some extent, these two things mix with each other to the point where it's hard to distinguish what's what, but...

It's easy to point at, like Izuku being Shoto's trusted vent friend, for example, and say that's Izuku being, well, supportive for one of his friends. That makes sense. Then you think about it and realize that, for all their parallels in situations, with Shoto and Endeavour to Izuku and Bakugou, neither of them ever... bring that up. Izuku never vents back to Shoto, even though I'm sure he'd be happy to return the favor, and Shoto never reaches out to Izuku, his first friend.

Why? Is it because Izuku is too traumatized and too used suppressing his negative emotions to bring it up? Is Shoto still too unsocialized to know to ask? Or does Hori just not want to bring that up?

Any or all of that is probably correct, depending on what point we're at in the story.

And then Bakugou, while we're at it; to some extent, there is definitely some Hori work in the background making sure they're "friends" despite all logic, but looking at how Izuku acts, and how he used to think (because we can no longer see him think on screen any more)... how much of that is forced? How much of that is that Izuku just wanting to help Bakugou? How much is his old awe of his old tormentor, always so superior in every way to the pathetic Deku (and, for the record, I put 'Deku' very much as Izuku being used to support Bakugou, specifically to protect him from having to grow the fuck up and use his actual name), and long engrained habits to the tune of, 'Bakugou is never in trouble, so don't even bother because it will only hurt me?'

Again, the answer is basiclly, 'Yes'.

The thing is, even before Hori started messing up the plot to push one agenda or another, one of Izuku's biggest traits was self-destructive behavior; hell, even as a kid, he would try to protect others, even at his own expense. It's clear that at this point in canon, no matter how much better it should be by now, that Izuku still has no self worth, and thus, little to no need to protect or prioritize himself and his needs.

He doesn't value himself, so him taking on extra burdens from others, and refusing to talk about his own, isn't just likely, it's still canon. But at the all the same....

Like, Endeavour. Izuku spends a lot of time with him, doesn't tell anyone about the blatant abuse, and even tells Shoto 'you're already try to forgive him', and that? That is just so forced. That's just Hori dropping Izuku next to someone he wants to be more popular, and hoping that his 'I'm A Good Guy' energy rubs off.

So... ultimately the answer is C, all of the above. Izuku does his best to be everyone's hero, it tears him apart because that's impossible, and he doesn't see anything wrong with that. Hori is trying to use him to support his other characters, and prevent the parts of him that he doesn't like anymore from coming up, so no one ever really talks about Izuku's problems, even if they actually would, or why he's like this, or how he feels about things, and of course Izuku would never be so rude to bring up his own problems when they could possibly inconvenience someone!

To be frank, at this point being Hori's character support character is so interwoven into Izuku's characterization that we're long past the point where it could be excised realistically; this is something that's ruined his growth as a person for years now, and would require changes to Izuku and others long before The War Arc, much less the last arc of the story, changes that would organically change how people interacted with him and how he responds to them, changes that would escalate naturally over time to the point where many characters, especially Izuku, and even the story itself would be drastically different than they are now.

But... well. Izuku doesn't get nice things. He just gets to be everyone else's nice thing.

Blue Hawaii (1961)

Elvis Presley’s ascent to stardom struck the United States (and the world) like a lightning bolt. Hounded from Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry due to the country music establishment taking offense to his genre-blending musicianship, Elvis grew from being a regional phenomenon to a national sensation as he helped innovate rockabilly, a form of rock and roll. Movie producers, sensing an opportunity to cash in on Elvis’ skyrocketing popularity, gave Elvis star vehicles such as Love Me Tender (1956) and Jailhouse Rock (1957). Critics shrugged at these films – low-budget affairs where most of the budget went to Elvis’ salary – but his fans made them critic-proof, turning out in droves to scream and swoon at their slick-looking dreamboat. Grappling with television’s advent and the dissolution of the Old Hollywood Studio System, Hollywood’s major studios shifted their efforts towards more bombastic, showman-like films. Such was the situation in the early 1960s that longtime Warner Bros. producer Hal B. Wallis (1938’s The Adventures of Robin Hood, 1942’s Casablanca), now at Paramount, joked that, “a Presley picture is the only sure thing in Hollywood.”

To the horror of Elvis’ fans and movie studio executives but to the delight of those fans’ parental figures and teachers, the U.S. Army drafted him in March 1958. Elvis served twenty-four months before his discharge with the rank of Sergeant. During his service, Elvis nevertheless had plenty of singles in the can, many ranking high on the charts while he was at basic training and later his posting in West Germany. Looking forward to restarting his musical and acting careers, Elvis soon returned to the recording studio and shot G. I. Blues (1960) – he had discussed the film with Wallis months prior to his discharge – in short order. For the eighth film of his career and his fourth after his discharge, Elvis starred in Blue Hawaii, directed by Norman Taurog (1938’s Boys Town, nine Elvis films) and produced by Wallis. The film stars Elvis as an Army veteran recently discharged from the service, returning to his home state. I wonder where did they get that idea from? It also marks the unlikely beginning of Elvis’ association with the Aloha State – which shed its territorial status in 1959 and was ready for a Hollywood treatment that had nothing to do with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

Chadwick “Chad” Gates (Presley) returns home to Hawai’i from his military service, greeted by girlfriend Maile Duval (Joan Blackman: “MY-lee”) and a flower seller named Waihila (Hilo Hattie in a cameo). Instead of immediately seeing his parents – mother Sarah Lee (Angela Lansbury, only ten years Elvis’ senior) and father Fred (Roland Winters) – he escapes to a secluded oceanside shack with Maile and his Hawaiian surf buddies. Chad is the son of pineapple plantation owners, and Sarah Lee wants him to succeed Fred when the time comes. But Chad is not interested in those plans, electing instead to work as a tour guide for Mr. Chapman’s (Howard McNear) travel agency – among other things, Maile works at the agency. The first tour he gives serves schoolteacher Abigail Prentice (Nancy Walters) and her four teenage students, all girls. One of those girls, Ellie Corbett (Jenny Maxwell), appears standoffish at first but then begins to flirt shamelessly with Chad.

If by that point in Blue Hawaii you are still concentrating on the plot, just note that your approach to watching Elvis movies is not advisable. Watching Elvis movies for a sensible plot is to invite frustration; accept the narrative drivel and enjoy.

Shot mostly on location on the Hawaiian Islands of O’ahu and Kaua’i, Hawai’i offers splendid backdrops to even the most mundane scenes of this film. Charles Lang’s (1947’s The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, 1959’s Some Like It Hot) camera allows characters to be dwarfed by the green mountains in the distance, the crystal blue waters extending to the horizon, and palm tree fronds wafting amid a gentle breeze. Scenes of breathtaking natural beauty abound in Blue Hawaii. In conjunction with the production (Hal Pereira and Walter H. Tyler) and set design (Sam Comer and Frank R. McKelvy), Blue Hawaii becomes, by default, the most colorful Elvis movie to date. The film, by design, partly becomes a tourism advertisement for the new state. Its white characters and filmmakers exotify and romanticize Native Hawaiian culture to fit their own expectations and perspectives – these sorts of depictions have endured across the last century, figuring heavily in cinema (1935’s Honolulu: The Paradise of the Pacific as part of [James A.] Fitzpatrick’s Traveltalks for MGM) and tourism advertising. This is the first live-action feature film from a major Hollywood studio to make even a minimal attempt to depict native Hawaiian culture since Waikiki Wedding (1937), another Paramount film.

Here are some more connections between Waikiki Wedding and Blue Hawaii: both share one song (“Blue Hawaii”) in both their soundtracks and both films are musicals. The Hawaiian musical sound is just as integral to popular conceptions of Hawai’i, and it is used liberally here in orchestrations, if not melodic structure. Blue Hawaii’s soundtrack contains the greatest amount of songs (fourteen) for an Elvis film. For those who enjoy their breathless musicals with a song at every turn, Blue Hawaii does just that. The musical numbers arrive in the most innocuous situations – from forming a melody from a tune heard on the radio, an impromptu jam session with a guitar conveniently within arm’s length of Elvis, or starting from nothing. The worst of the soundtrack avoids many of the novelty songs that plague Elvis films, especially the later entries. Given how nonsensical the plots to Elvis movies are, the lower-tier songs in Blue Hawaii are preferable compared to more stilted acting and fraternizing shenanigans. Thus, the bar is raised, and the inclusion of two non-original songs – “Blue Hawaii” (music by Ralph Rainger, lyrics by Leo Robin) and “Aloha ‘Oe” (Queen Lili’uokalani) – are arranged in such a way that beautifully complements Elvis’ velvety singing voice. Among the original songs, “Moonlight Swim” (music by Ben Weisman, lyrics by Sylvia Dee) is a sensuous, laid back song that perfectly serves Chad’s characterization: an unabashed Casanova, effortless in romance, a hint of masculine arrogance.

The runaway hit of the Blue Hawaii soundtrack is among Elvis’ most popular songs. “Can’t Help Falling in Love” – music and lyrics by Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore, and George David Weiss – appears approximately midway through the film as Chad says hello to Maile’s grandmother (Flora Kaai Hayes, a former Hawaiian Territorial Representative to the U.S. House of Representatives) for the first time since before his military service. It, like so many other musical entries in Blue Hawaii, arrives without much warning, backed by a constantly harmonizing music box and a steel guitar played in a Hawaiian style. One might take issue with the song’s use in context, but it is a crooners’ standard that has crossed linguistic barriers worldwide. Its simplicity is self-evident: a memorable melody, chorus, and a minor key bridge aching for resolution as it modulates to major key. Perhaps “Can’t Help Falling in Love” is not considered one of the greatest original songs in movie history because of the questionable quality of the film it appears in. More likely, Elvis’ gravitational pull as a crossover music and movie star writes its own legends that defy a critic’s or a historian’s corrections.

Somehow, I have written all the above without remarking on the acting. Other than Elvis himself, everyone else is a passing interest at best. Joan Blackman’s chemistry with Elvis is apparent, but she does not distinguish herself from every other female lead in an Elvis movie. Angela Lansbury’s exaggerated Southern accent displays her considerable range, even if there are better examples in other films. As much as some may deride Elvis’ performances for being unchallenging, one could not imagine an Elvis movie without the star attraction. His persona is effervescent; his charisma incontestable. According to Weiss, Elvis’ comedic instincts manifested themselves in subtle ways. If Elvis requested a joke to be explained in discussions about the screenplay, it was his roundabout, maybe overly polite, way to warn Weiss, Taurog, and screenwriter Hal Kanter (1952’s Road to Bali, at least twenty-two Academy Award ceremonies) that the joke was not funny. During test screenings of Blue Hawaii, every joke kept in the film that Elvis questioned elicited nothing from the audience. On- and off-screen, an Elvis movie with Elvis removed would collapse from the void of hilarity and charm such an absence would create.

Blue Hawaii, like all other Elvis movies prior, succeeded at the box office in comparison to its budget. Adding to this bounty for Elvis, the film’s soundtrack album sold millions of copies, sitting atop of the Billboard charts for twenty weeks, and garnering a Grammy nomination. The soundtrack profits from Blue Hawaii and the preceding G.I. Blues led Presley’s obstinate manager, Colonel Tom Parker, to have his client concentrate on film soundtrack albums at the expense of non-soundtrack albums – setting the groundwork for the remainder of the 1960s (Elvis released 16 soundtrack albums versus six non-soundtrack albums during this decade), with diminishing returns. Parker reasoned to Elvis that his fans demanded to see him in these musical romantic comedies, rejecting any roles that did not fit this mold. Elvis, believing his manager, continued to make films until well past the point an Elvis Presley picture was a guaranteed hit in theaters.

In its visual splendor and Pacific appeal, Blue Hawaii sealed the fate of Elvis’ post-Army career. No other subsequent Elvis film would match the commercial heights of Blue Hawaii, although one could argue several of those movies surpass this one in terms of acting, aesthetics, and musical interest (like 1964’s Viva Las Vegas and two concert documentaries in 1970 and 1972). Elvis returned to Hawai’i several more times during his career for concerts and two films – Girls! Girls! Girls! (1962) and Paradise, Hawaiian Style (1966). As much as Elvis is associated with Tupelo, Mississippi (his birthplace) and Graceland in Memphis, there is also a special relationship between Elvis and Hawai’i. That relationship – one that touches Elvis’ personal life and the musical traditions of Native Hawaiians – begins with Blue Hawaii, an archetypal Elvis film and one of his best.

Nice to finally see Zatte, I always liked her - she's dangerous in a way we don't often get in DB.

Hey, thanks, that means a lot to me.    Also, this is all the prompting I need to try to explain how I came up with the character.   Spoilers under the cut.

The thing that held me up early on was that I couldn’t decide if Luffa’s “career” in the past should be long or short.   I used the Bardock: Father of Goku TV special as a model of a “short” Luffa arc.    You have this character who’s only mentioned in passing (by Raditz), and the TV special fleshes him out and kills him off in the space of an hour.   Then he wakes up in the past in the 2011 “Episode of Bardock” Special, if you want to count that.    On some level, I imagined it could be possible to give Luffa a really quick run in her native era, and then send her to the future to join the TIme Patrol, like the Bardock specials.   

I worked on Chapter 126 and 127 today, so I think it’s clear that I did not go down that route.   I knew the alternative would be to really flesh out the character, having her go through multiple adventures like Goku in Dragon Ball.   That meant I had to come up with extra stuff for her to do.   The simple fact is that I really enjoyed writing the character, and I wanted to take the long road, so that later on, when she refers to her past exploits, there would be some weight to them.   

So I worked on coming up with stuff for her to do in between major plot points.   I thought about giving her some love interests, since we’d never seen a Saiyan character jump from one relationship to another, like Spider-Man in the 70′s.   At some point, I thought it might be interesting to have her run into an old flame, someone who knew her before she went Super.   

The problem with that was that when we first meet Luffa, she’s only 19 years old, and she’s been married to Kandai for about a year.    And she’s been living on the Dorlun colony for about five years.    I say this like someone else foisted this problem on me, but I’m the one who came up with all that stuff, to better amplifly the tragedy she experiences before turning Super Saiyan.   This isn’t some seasoned veteran who’s been all over the universe, loving and leaving ‘em from one planet to the next.     She’s young and inexperienced and isolated in a very small community.    

But I still liked the idea, and I hadn’t published Chapters 1-10 yet, so I still had a lot of room to set things up for later.   I realized the only way this would work would be if the “old flame” was a Dorlun who had admired Luffa from afar.    And that led me to Captain Mesas, the leader of the Dorlun militia.  

Mesas originally served only one purpose, which was to be a sort of proxy who could represent the entire Dorlun colony that Luffa had been hired to defend.   I assigned her gender at random, I think.    I just know that I didn’t put a ton of thought into it, since I was planning to kill all of the Dorluns off later anyway.   Luffa would take this personally, because she came to appreciate these people without really admitting it, and this would be demonstrated by her respect for Mesas, who was their lead warrior, and thus the most Saiyan-like of the bunch.   Eventually, I renamed her Captain Zatte, because I had settled on naming all the Dorlun characters after anagrams of metric prefixes, i.e. “zetta”.  

So I quickly came to the conclusion that the only way this “reunited with an old flame” idea would work would be if it was a Dorlun, and the only one that would make any sense would have to be Zatte, and the only way that could work would be if there was some sort of romantic tension between them.    They couldn’t be lovers in those early chapters because Luffa was married at the time, but later, there would need to be a moment where Zatte would confess her feelings and Luffa would have to feel the same way.   

And this is how I ended up making Luffa bisexual.    I didn’t want Zatte to be a man, and I couldn’t make Luffa gay, because I needed her to start out in a marriage to a Saiyan man.   Too much of the plot depended upon that.   I struggled with this decision for a couple of reasons.   

First, I wasn’t sure I could pull it off, and I didn’t know if I wanted this story to be my first try, because I was already trying to do a lot of other new tricks.   I didn’t want real-world wlw’s to see this story and be disappointed by my amateurish attempt to get it right.    

Second, I felt disingenuous about making such a major change to the character for my own convenience.    I felt like I’d seen that a lot in comic books over the years, where writers would seemingly assign bisexuality to characters arbitrarily, or for “shock” value, or just to be salacious.  I didn’t want readers to think I was only doing this for shallow reasons, or to get my jollies writing two girls making out.  

But at the same time, I really wanted to do it this way, and I finally decided to just go with it and see where it took me.   In hindsight, I realize that I was just being a fraidy cat about the whole thing.   Writing wlw romance isn’t so functionally different from mlw romance, and once I got used to the idea, I realized the only thing I needed to do was to treat it with the proper respect.    And really, this wasn’t so far off from the original premise.    I wanted to make the “Legendary Super Saiyan” a woman to defy convention and to piss off dudebros.    Making her queer just continues that same line of reasoning, right?   I used to see jackasses on the internet say that women couldn’t turn Super Saiyan because they couldn’t “get angry enough,” which is pretty similar to a lot of biphobic crap I’ve heard on the internet.    I mean, I used to listen to Loveline on the radio around 2001, and Dr. Drew was acting like bisexuality was some made-up thing.    Apparently Dr. Drew went nuts somewhere along the way, or maybe he always was, but he seemed pretty progressive in 2001, and he accepted gay and lesbian callers just fine, but he told bi callers to “figure out what they want”, and that never sat right with me.   People used to say there were no such things as black swans, too.    That’s Luffa all over.     You can deny her all you want, but she’ll still kick your ass.  

I’m this close to going off on a rant about J.K. Rowling, so let me try to force myself to talk about Zatte here.    The problem I ran into almost immediately was that I wrote what I had originally planned for her, and I was very pleased with how it turned out.  And then I had to move on to the next arc, and yet, she was still there, and I knew I’d have to do something with her.    I feel like I’ve been winging it ever since, but my main priority was to set her apart from Keda, the other Dorlun character I kept around.  So I ran with the idea that Zatte is more “Saiyan-like” than the rest of her species, and maybe that makes her a little radical at times, maybe not in a way we humans might notice, but a way that other Dorluns would find unsettling.   Dorluns are survivalists, and for them “risk” is a four-letter word, but Zatte’s a thrillseeker at heart.   She wants to survive in spite of the dangers rather than back away from them.    Keda would find somewhere to hide for several months until it’s safe to come out, but Zatte would try to go all Die Hard on a situation.   Keda sticks close to Luffa because Luffa is the strongest person in the universe, so by Luffa’s side is arguably the safest place to be.    Zatte sticks close to Luffa because she’s a furry being by Luffa’s side is arguably the most dangerous place to be.    If she can survive there, she can survive anywhere.  

There’s also the whole fanaticism angle.   At some point, I came up with the idea that Zatte sees Luffa’s Super Saiyan emergence as a watershed moment in history.     I sort of threw that together, mostly to make Luffa uncomfortable and to add some tension to their relationship, but it also distinguishes Zatte from characters like Chi-Chi or Bulma, who see Super Saiyan as a lot of flashy nonsense, signifying nothing.    “Punk rocker?   Don’t you understand?   Your son is a miracle!”

That angle is kind of hard for me to work with, because I also tried to make Zatte very grounded at the same time.    I guess it’s like if you had Jerusalem Syndrome but you were very self-aware the entire time.   You make a toga out of your hotel linens and just constantly saying “Man, I’m just being really nutty right now, but oh well.”

A lot of her tactics are sort of rooted in stuff I thought made sense with the weaker characters in Dragon Ball.   I don’t really know how strong Zatte would be.    I envisioned her as being like a “mere mortal”, like Lois Lane, but in Dragon World even guys like Mr. Satan are insanely tough.   I’m pretty sure Bulma could kick Brock Lesnar’s ass if she visited our own world.   He’d F5 her and she’d just get up and slap him in the face and he’d collapse.    I feel like if Zatte entered the 23rd Budokai, she could sweep the entire thing.   That’s not what I set out to do, and it sounds really arrogant because I’d be putting her over Goku and Piccolo, but come on, that’s low-tier by DBZ standards.   If she couldn’t dominate the 23rd Budokai, then definitely the 22nd, which also sounds unthinkable, but that’s how this crazy show works.   Yajirobe could have won the 22nd Budokai if he’d only thought to enter it.   

My point is that “weaker” characters can do a lot from the sidelines if they know their limits and pick their spots, like Tien using the Kikoho on Cell and Super Buu, or Yajirobe cutting off Vegeta’s tail, and so forth.    Most of those guys hate resorting to that sort of thing, because they prefer to stand and fight in the open, but Zatte specializes in sneaky hit-and-run attacks.   She should be able to shoot ki blasts, but she sticks to firearms instead, because they’re more precise and ki senses can’t pick them up.  She likes being underestimated, to the point where her ideal battle is one where the enemy doesn’t even know she’s on the field.  

I dunno, I’ve always wondered if I was getting her “right” all this time, but now that I summarize it all in one place, it doesn’t seem as disjointed as I feared.   I had all these different things I needed her to be and do, and most of them involved finding ways to justify her continued presence in the story, but maybe it’s all worked out after all.   Sometimes I feel like Zatte is the Yoko Ono of this fic, but the Beatles suck, so I shouldn’t indulge in their crude analogies.    I Zatted my way into this mess, and I’m happy to Zatte my way out.

Ang Nilapastangan stares at the larawan she’s brought, sometimes caressing it, as she tells her story. “The world has been here for as long as we know. In the beginning, there was nothing but The Sea, and The Sky. They had names, of course: Lihangin for the sky and Lidagat for the sea. This vast expanse encompassed everything you know. From the land that we’re sitting within to whatever shitty universe you came from.”

“Yeah it is pretty shitty,” interjects Angela, moving her hand to brush some stray strand of hair from her face. She removes her glasses from her face and puts it down on the wooden table. She rubs her eyes. The dark bags under them have never been deeper nor heavier. Without them, all she sees is a blur, but she notices that it's somewhat easier to see. She then realizes that it’s mostly because of all the debris and drops of blood that have splattered across the front of her glasses.

Makabintang brings over a small soft cloth. “Wipe it down. It’s been like that since I first saw you.”

“Right.” She curses, thinking about why she didn’t think to fix it while she was changing clothes. As she wipes down her glasses, she continues listening to Ang Nilapastangan’s story.

“Now the Sky and the Sea weren’t the first beings in the world. Before even the Sky and the Sea there was a singular being, named MAYKAPAL, which means “the-one-who-thickens” or “the-one-who-forms”. It is said that MAYKAPAL was a being that is the pure pinprick of light, and that light was MAYKAPAL. When, out of Love, MAYKAPAL expanded to create the Sky and Sea, MAYKAPAL Itself became a separate being from the rest of them. He became a being with many spirits at his side. These Spirits eventually became known as the Anghel.

“When he expanded, his being became two, and the two became that Sky and Sea. And the rulers of Sky and Sea were Kaptan and Maguayen, the Nuno, or Ancestor, of the Sky, and the Nuno of the Sea. These two fell in love, and when Sea and Sky fell made love, they created the first diwata: Lidagat, the Bathala of the Sea, and Lihangin, the Bathala of the Sky.

“A thousand years pass, and Lidagat and Lihangin give four children before passing away into that embrace. The Nuno of the four children became their caretakers. But it was not long before the four children had thoughts of usurpation: ‘Why should only Kaptan sit upon the throne of heaven?’ and so they rebelled, but Kaptan was mightier than they, being the Nuno, and thus killed them with his Bolt. Kaptan and Maguayen gave light to their corpses: Adlao, the bravest one, became the golden sun. Bulan, the most beautiful, became the copper moon. Suga, the smartest and youngest one, became a million stars.

But Kalibutan, the instigator of the rebellion, they deemed wicked, and thus they threw his fractured body to the Sea, and he became the Pearlescent Archipelago, where we are now.”

“You know what? That sounds oddly familiar.”

“It should be. It’s a common creation myth across all universes.” Ang Nilapastangan stands up and then walks over to the stone box that Makabintang came from. She opens it and retrieves a strange vessel made of wood, seemingly sealed with some kind of sap or resin. She cracks it open and then drinks from within. And then, she reaches for something within and brings out a frozen strip of bacon, which she brings over to the table and puts in front of the larawan.

Angela blinks. “Uh?”

“A daily offering,” says Ang Nilapastangan. “It’s for the Bathala Inaginid.”

“Bathala Inaginid?”

“This world,” says Makabintang, as he’s now filing his razor-sharp claws with a flat wooden stick. “Is alive. In truth all worlds are alive. Everything--every single thing--has a soul within them. Not just us. And those souls are called diwata, that elemental, intelligent being that houses within the object, giving it its inherent objective quality.”

Angela blinks again. She casually ponders removing her glasses and wiping them down again.

“It’s… an animistic belief. We call it Anito, it’s the religion of the forgotten. It’s the religion of the Pearlescent before Trinitarianism became too large.”

“Okay. So, what, you don’t believe in God?”

Ang Nilapastangan shakes her head. “I guess I’ll have to explain a bit more. Settle down. Maybe eat some of that chocolate bar, it’s gonna melt.

“As I said, Maykapal was always there, the being separated from all things, the Ab Eterno, the Beginning, Middle and End. The diwata call him BATALANG MAYKAPAL, to distinguish him from the other Bathala, which are basically like the chiefs of the diwata, who live within the larger and more important things in life, like the sea, the sky, the air, large important mountains, that kind of stuff.

“Now this belief, this reverence of nature and worshipping of natural places, is called Anito now in modern Sansinukob. Anito is the word for the ritual of speaking with these unseen beings, the diwata and umalagad. A lot of this is facilitated by a spirit medium, usually called babaylan or katalonan, depending on where you are in the Archipelago.” Ang Nilapastangan raises the larawan. “This is a larawan of Bathala Inaginid, one of the three Bathala of War, otherwise known as the War Triad. The other two being Makanduk, Bathala of Raiding, and Barangaw, the Rainbow Bathala of Victory.

“Now this is important to you because most of Anito practice has been extinguished, replaced with Trinitarianism and the worship of the Holy Trinity, now known as God. Dyosveta, the Abusive Father, Yezu, the Idiot Son, and Shinseina Yurei, the Holiest Ghost. Together, the three of them make God. Where they come from, not many know, although the popular theory is that they are a Triad of War Gods as well coming from three different places that teamed up and amassed a huge following, which in turn gave them many offerings, which in turn gave them the power they needed to kill MAYKAPAL.”

Angela blinks. “MAYKAPAL is dead?”

“Yeah,” says Ang Nilapastangan, drinking from the wooden can again. “Anyway, ever since the Trinity came, they brought with them the anghel, umalagad from the continents by the border of the world that have chosen to side with the Trinity. They number 777,777 in total, and there are 7 chief angels among them, known as the Arkserapin. Each of them leads 111,111 anghel, of varying power. The one that leads Para Sa Luklukan is supposedly an Arkserapin: Barachiel, the Patron of Guardians.”

Angela nods slowly as Ang Nilapastangan chugs on her cup again. “So… the anghel… I suppose they’re like the servants of the Trinity? Like, I can kinda understand what you mean with the Trinity in all, especially considering where I came from.”

“You have the Trinity in your country?” asks Makabintang, suddenly with eyes wide open.

Angela shrugs. “Not… exactly? But close enough.”

“Ah, do you mean a belief that’s similar to the Trinity?” asks Ang Nilapastangan. “Because in this present moment, the Trinity is out sailing in the Neverending Ocean, conducting the Multiversal Conquest, where they aim to conquer all 100,000 Universes that arose from the shards of dead BATALA after the Trinity killed Them.”

“Wait, the universes come from BATALA? MAYKAPAL?”

Ang Nilapastangan nods. “The 7641 Universes float haphazardly in the Neverending Ocean past the borders of Sansinukob, also known as the Jaws of the World. Your universe is one of them. All of them are chunks of MAYKAPAL’s corpse.”

“What the fuck.”

Ang Nilapastangan shrugs. “You get used to it.”

“Get used to what?”

“Saying ‘what the fuck’.” Ang Nilapastangan drinks a bit more, and Angela doubts the size of the can. 

“Fine. All right. So what’s happening is that there is… this world, that was made by god. And then MY universe is from the bloody chunks of God after They were killed by God?���

“Correct.”

“And now I’m finding out that there was this whole thing, this world, this entire time because I was abducted by angels?”

“Correct,” says Makabintang. “And they are theoretically trying to sacrifice you to give more power to the Holy Trinity so that their diyostek works even in the Neverending Ocean so that they can continue their Omniversal Conquest.”

“They call it as them ‘Claiming Fate’. They say that, since they have killed BATALANG MAYKAPAL, it is their duty, their responsibility, their destiny, to invade and conquer the rest of the universes.”

Angela rubs her temples. “You know what’s insane? What’s insane is that logically, yeah, that makes sense. But, like, in common sense? This is all bullshit.”

“Oh, Angela,” says Ang Nilapastangan. “There is no common sense in Sansinukob.”

After that brief rundown of what’s going on, Angela decides to go to sleep. She decides that he’s had too exciting of a first rodeo here in this weird and strange new place and decides that the comfort of oblivion is something she needs right now. She sleeps on the banig on the floor that Makabintang has provided for her. As she sleeps, Ang Nilapastangan smokes a yosi. 

“What do we do with her?” asks Makabintang. “I don’t get why you want to help her.”

“Three-fold,” says Ang Nilapastangan, dragging and then letting the smoke out through her nostrils. 

Makabintang snorts. “What are you, a buddha?”

Ang Nilapastangan ignores him. “Firstly, we’re leaving this place anyway, we can’t stay here anymore. The Guwardya Sibil, now with the help of the Hukbong-Katihan, are going around the entire village. There’s no escape. We have to leave.

“Secondly, the Hagdanan has begun. I told you. And she--” Ang Nilapastangan points at Angela, “--is going to be a part of it. “

“What makes you think she wasn’t just abducted by Para Sa Luklukan?”

“Sometimes Tadhana works strangely, all right? There are a lot of things we cannot explain, and some coincidences are too convenient to be true. She’s a competitor in the Hagdanan, I’m sure of it. I can see her soul, and it burns with that same fire hot wind of all the destined competitors.” Ang Nilapastangan looks over the girl. A soft, almost motherly, look shadows her face. 

“Thirdly, she needs to be protected, for now. Even just for now, while she hasn’t cultivated and grown her Gahum. If I cannot protect them all, then I can at least protect one.”

Makabintang stares at Ang Nilapastangan, startled at the sudden shift in tone. He sighs. “Hey, what happened wasn’t your fault. You didn’t know better.”

“I know.”

“And you survived!” Makabintang turns to the sleeping girl. She looks even more confused asleep. “Fine. I get what you’re trying to do. I’ll help you, but this won’t be the atonement you think you need.”

Ang Nilapastangan smirks. “I know. This is penance. A penance without atonement. It’s the only one I deserve.”

“Damn bitch, you’re really torn up about it.”

“I’m tao, duwende. Unlike you, you little weirdo.”

“Wow, look who’s talking! Miss black-and-red eyes and big ass horns. Fuck you, I’m going to nap.”

Makabintang walks over to his chair and then curls up in it since he’s small enough to curl up in his chair and sleep. Ang Nilapastangan smiles and watches him, dragging on her cig.

When Angela awakes, the other two are already standing underneath the rope that leads to the opening of the mound. Ang Nilapastangan still wears her signature baro and tapis, although other than that all she wears is that salakot and rattan backpack. 

Angela pushes herself up and rubs at her eyes. She reaches for her folded glasses and puts them on. 

Makabintang is a bit more decked out: he also has a salakot on, albeit a bit smaller than Ang Nilapastangan’s, and the salakot is lined with iron. He wears cotton-padded armor on his torso called a barote, and he wields a pistol which he holds more or less like a rifle. On his hip dangles his belt. There Angela notices that the blue sprites that dance upon the stone box that he uses to hold his chocolate bars are gone and they look trapped instead in the little strange, bird-caged shaped cartridges upon Makabintang’s hip.

“Ah, finally, you’re awake,” says Ang Nilapastangan. “Come, get up. Get some water, there’s some I’ve prepared over on the table.”

Angela yawns. “What time is it?”

“Bukang-liwayway,” says Ang Nilapastangan. “The moment of breaking dawn. I have arranged a kalesa to be prepared for us at this point, but it's a bit of a walk, and we have to walk through the village to get there.”

“I’ll scout ahead,” says Makabintang. Ang Nilapastangan turns and gazes at him sharply, but Makabintang shrugs. “What? I’m duwende, I can turn myself invisible.”

“Anghel can sense Kaluluwa,” says Ang Nilapastangan. “It won’t be of much help.”

“Yeah but it’s better than having you, a walking sun in spiritual power terms.” Makabintang prepares to leap. “You get ready. I’ll get back when I’ve scouted out the area and think it’s clear to move.” And not wanting to hear any more protest from Ang Nilapastangan, Makabintang leaps straight up and through the hole of the mound. The mound opening seals closed as soon as he’s out.

Ang Nilapastangan sighs. She turns around, grabs and hauls a chair to a spot underneath the rope, and then sits right below it.

Angela goes ahead and pours herself a glass of water from a ceramic pitcher. The water is clean, and is oddly refreshing. She notices that she hasn’t been drinking anything all this time. Eating, yes, but not drinking. The water is extremely refreshing, and she finishes two glasses in relative ease, too overwhelmed by the refreshing power of simple water.

Afterwards, she washes her face by the sink, wiping herself down. When she looks up to look for a towel, Ang Nilapastangan sighs and then walks over to her. She uses her panuelo to wipe her face dry. “Hoy babae, Makabintang bathes by the river. He doesn’t keep towels here. There’s a bunch of towels that they sell by the river which are usually disposable.”

Angela, though, is a bit too flustered by Ang Nilapastangan’s gesture, letting her wipe her entire face until it’s dry, her hands stuck to the sides of her body. “Th-thank you,” says Angela, after she’s more or less dry.

“Get the parts I didn’t,” says Ang Nilapastangan, giving her the panuelo, before walking back to the chair. Angela stares at the panuelo for a bit. Her breathing is hot. She feels fuzzy.

She decides to dry parts of her stupid bangs that didn’t get dried. Her hands once again bump into the horns that she’s grown ever since she’s been branded. She sighs. She feels them up, and the strange sensuality of the gesture isn’t lost on her. She holds in a laugh. 

The horns are strangely sensitive. Not in that weird way, but as if she’s grown new nerves so that the horns can feel whenever someone is touching them. It’s strange, having new parts of you grown onto you. She can’t quite explain the feeling either, she just feels it, and that’s that. Sometimes it twitches, other times it’s solid and erect.

She sighs.

“That’s the branding,” says Ang Nilapastangan. “As long as you have those, you’ll be easy to track, and your soul will be more or less confined to this place.” Ang Nilapastangan turns to her then. “This place being, Sansinukob, I mean. You can’t return to where you were until those have been removed.”

She gulps. “How do I get it off?”

“Physically? I’m not sure,” says Ang Nilapastangan. “But spiritually? We’d just have to remove the spiritual properties that live within that. To do that, we’d have to go visit an albularyo.”

“Albularyo?”

Ang Nilapastangan nods. “An herbalist. Sometimes called a witch doctor. We don’t have any here, since it’s too easy to be ratted out by villagers and then be burned by the Priests of the Church. However, the place where we’re going to, San Justo village, is known to house some. It’s been a bastion for Anito.”

“And there’s an albularyo there?”

She nods in reply. “I’ve been told. We’ll get the branding upon your soul so that the anghel can’t find you anymore.”

Angela swallows and then nods. “O-Okay. I think… I think that makes sense. Will there be any way that I can remove them?” she asks, as she puts her glasses back on after wetting and wiping them as well.

Ang Nilapastangan shrugs.  “We can cut them off, but if you want that to be done surgically and cleanly, we’re going to have to go to Biringan, the City of Cities. After that, well, you’re going to have to participate in the Hagdanan.”

“Can I… not? Can’t I just forfeit and go home? See my family? Go back to fucking normal?”

“No can do, girl,” says Ang Nilapastangan. “You see, once you’ve been chosen by Tadhana to become one of the competitors of the Hagdanan, you’re in it for life. Even if you do manage to get out of Sansinukob and back to your universe, the competitors will chase you down, since there can only be 1 winner. If that happens well, you might just bring about godly destruction upon your universe.”

Angela inhales. She notices that she’s sniffling. She notices that her cheeks are wet. She tries speaking, but a lump forms in her throat, and she can’t say it properly. “I can’t… go back?” her voice is pained and forced, as the lump gets bigger and impossible to overcome.

“If you win,” says Ang Nilapastangan, looking away. “There might be a way to leave Sansinukob and never be found. I mean, I’ve done it, more or less.”

“O-okay.” She’s crying now. Angela is crying now. Ang Nilapastangan lets her, staring away, picking up another cig and lighting it with the tip of her crimson finger.

can i just say that they boring as shit until they get to rose lake??

lydia grew up the middle child in a huge family, with siblings and cousins constantly underfoot. their parents loved them all, but obviously were more than busy trying to take care of the horde. with a burgeoning lawyer and star athlete for older siblings and a leading thespian as a younger sibling, lydia found themselves falling into the role of quiet, studious middle child.

they convinced themselves into thinking that there wasn’t anything special about them and that they wouldn’t amount to much. they resigned themselves to a life of constantly being surpassed, up until they decided in high school that they would use their smarts to try and change the world.

they got into *insert fancy school here that would be most convenient plot-wise* on a partial-ride scholarship and decided to pursue environmental science ! college is where they thrived, mostly because they were surrounded by other people who had the same goals as them and were willing to work hard for it. 

environmental science isn’t particularly competitive as a field, but being female-presenting in male-dominated world forced them to speak out more and thus, their middle-child syndrome began to become more prominent. they felt the unending need to prove themselves to others, and they began to steal attention for themselves.

they decided to continue environmental sciences in graduate school, mostly because they weren’t done being a student, but also because graduate school opened up more research opportunities. this is what lead them to roselake in the first place.

they had signed up for a highly-coveted research position in the arctic circle (let’s say,,,,,,,somewhere in scandinavia) but due to some clerical error, they missed out on the spot and was forced to take the only remaining spots left, which sent them to roselake with a miniscule group of two lead scientist and one other grad student. suffice to say, they aren’t exactly happy about it.

middle child syndrome like nobody’s business. they need to be the best and  is not afraid to step on anyone else on their way to being the best. it a good thing they are in science because if they were in a more competitive field, they’d probably have thrown hands by this point.

 they value their intelligence very much and they like to put the world into neat boxes. sciences makes sense to them. they understand biology and physics but not people so much and never magic, so they absolutely do not believe in the harvest sprites. 

they’re kind of vehemently against the idea of the sprites, so they will be dismissive and often cold with anyone who does believe in the sprites. they do feel like its a loaf of horseshit.

they are going to boost themselves using this tiny town and they will end up with an international prize if it kills them, so they are going to make certain that they find the source of the town’s ecological decline and they are certain there is a perfectly reasonable explanation for it all. their thesis is gonna smack.

Is it Martin's intention to make fire and blood a critique of misogyny?

This is a point of discussion in the F&B post that I’m still working on so I don’t know how exhaustive this is going to be. But I’ve received many variants of this same question and I don’t want to put it off for too long.

I obviously can not speak to GRRM’s mind, but I personally don’t see how Fire and Blood can be constructed as a critique of anything. Leaning into sexist tropes in not a critique of them. Doubling down on existing problems like death by childbed, child brides and the use of sexual violence as a plot device is not a critique of them. Depicting any problematic element isn’t inherently critical just because said element exists in your world. You’re not inherently critiquing rape just because you’re using it in your story. You’re not inherently critiquing racism just because you have people being racist in your story. That stuff needs to be called out, or it’d only function as an embellishment or a plot device or an uncritical use of established tropes. What distinguishes showing misogyny and critiquing misogyny is the presence of a challenge to prevalent problematic tropes and to in-universe misogyny. If that challenge does not exist, then what’s the difference between problematic material and critical material? It’d all look the same.

But even if I allow that this book was meant as a critique of misogyny, it didn’t work. Martin often nails it when he wants to critique something or deconstruct a trope or interrogate a bias. Think Cersei’s walk of shame. Think Arianne’s struggle against the possibility of being replaced by her brother. Think Catelyn’s refusal to allow that having an emotional response hinders a woman’s judgement. Martin’s critiques are often loud and clear. They allow for the bias of the in-universe characters but include a resounding rebuffs to it, whether by proving them wrong or deconstructing the bias itself. That rarely happens in F&B, and when it does, it’s often undermined simply to tell us that the men involved are sexist, which tells us nothing new about any of them. F&B could have included a real critique, even allowing for the in-universe author’s prejudices. It didn’t. It minimized dynamic and strong women instead and treated us to a parade of broken and/or sexualized bodies in the name of so-called historical accuracy and making a point about the awfulness of male characters, at least according to Elio Garcia.

And that is the argument being offered for F&B being what it is. Neither Martin nor Garcia tried to say that this book was meant as a critique of misogyny as far as I know, only that these things did happen in medival times and that the intended point was to show the prejudice and villainy of male characters. So Alysanne is victimized and silenced to tell us that Jaehaerys is sexist and cruel. Alyssa is victimized and silenced to tell us that Rogar is sexist and cruel. Unwin Peake’s 12-year-old daughter is victimized and silenced to tell us that Peake is sexist and cruel. Coryanne Wylde and seven Lyseni slaves are victimized and silenced to tell us that Rogar and/or his brothers are sexist and cruel. Numerous girls are married off too young to tell us that their fathers and husbands are sexist and cruel. Numerous women are sexualized to tell us that Gyldayn is sexist and a pervert. One question though: why do all these women need to be sacrificed for the characterization of male characters? Why is women’s sexual suffering the most convenient plot device Martin can find to frame Westerosi misogyny? What does that tell us about Westeros that we don’t already know? What’s the upside of any of it? Because that upside is the only reason Martin’s narrative doesn’t devolve into a grimdark world. His challenges to the dark, the unjust, the nihilistic and the cruel are what makes reading this series worthwhile. F&B sorely lacks that. For god’s sake, This is a book that took “are there no true knights among you?” and made it about Maegor. From Duncan the Tall and Baelor Breakspear to Maegor. Think about that for a second.

It’s a fundamental misunderstanding to think that we’re arguing that Martin totally intended for us to take Gyldayn’s biases at face value because that’s not the issue at all. We’re questioning the necessity of making Gyldayn a sex-obsessed pervert which unavoidably mars the depiction of female characters in the only material we’re ever going to get about them. I’ll allow that this was supposed to make a deliberate point about biased PoVs or how prejudice affects historical accounts on women …. first off, to quote @pretenderoftheeast, deliberate doesn’t necessarily mean good (or, you know, critical). So Martin wanted to show us that Gyldayn’s misogyny has affected how he portrays women. Fine. It remains that the only account we’re ever going to get on so many women was filtered through the lens of a dismissive, misogynistic, victim-blaming, sex-obsessed maester who centered the personhood of multiple women on their sexuality and/or fertility. That so-called critique doesn’t change the fact that we’re never getting any characterization for many of these women. It doesn’t change the fact that it’s built on furthering the dismissal of women as little more than sexual objects and/or walking wombs. It doesn’t change the fact that many women exist in the narrative to give birth, be abused and die. It doesn’t change the inherently gendered method of death and/or abuse.

Furthermore, whether the argument for F&B holds to the idea that Gyldayn’s position as unreliable narrator offers a critique of misogyny in and of itself, or to the idea that Gyldayn’s prejudices shouldn’t be taken for the narrative’s own and thus as an authorial problem, the fact that none of the problems of F&B are new and that there is no conceivable way to hold Gyldayn responsible for some of the problems in the book undermine both arguments. Gyldayn is not the one who decided to kill off 12 women in childbed, nor was he the one marrying off all those child brides. There is something to say about Gyldayn’s perspective in reporting on Jaehaerys’ dismissal of Alysanne’s wishes but he isn’t the one who made Jaehaerys do it in the first place. Gyldayn didn’t make Maris Baratheon join the silent sisters as a punishment for her words to Aemond. He didn’t make multiple women isolate themselves to grieve, leaving behind their kids, their political duties and even their own war councils, while the men proved proactive or vengeful. He didn’t make jealousy a main element in several women’s relationships. And that’s besides the fact that Gyldayn is GRRM’s creation so he is only what Martin wrote him to be. To what purpose, I have no idea.

The crux of this issue, to me, is that F&B is a historical book that relies information to us through Gyldayn making him the source of any information that we have. His own characterization matters only insofar as his function as an in-universe tool of authorial exposition. In making him so overly misogynistic and sex-obsessed then using his characterization to justify the problems in the narrative, GRRM not only crippled our knowledge of a slew of more narratively important women and deprived them (and us) from getting a sense of their personhood, he also prioritized Gyldayn’s characterization over these women, despite the fact that it’s their stories and their conflicts that drive the narrative forward. I’m not sure how I can see that as a critique of misogyny.

          WORDS PIERCED HIS SUBTLE FLEXOR, reminiscing of a tight knot. His respiratory lugs halted the normalcy of breathing, offering the essence of betrayal — a sudden casualty about to transpire. But alas, a jolt of nerves and sheer resoluteness brought him back to pragmatism. His pattern of respiring resumed to a heavy one; with deep inhalations and exhalations taking place. Exhaustion was consuming his fatigue subsistance, notwithstanding the sculpture of stalwartness remaining towering. He knew — Oh, he knew, that his limit was bound to be reached and resume to the lanky caricature of actuality that he is. (  That is, if he were to remain alive  ) In which in that case, that would be an argumentative thing to take into consideration, especially with the circumstance taking place at this moment. That would be both a blessing and a curse for miscellaneous reasons that their analyzation had little importance right now. Other things held uttermost significance.

          Ineluctably, he couldn’t help it but tilt his head, as identical nuances of sapphore, constantly being hollowed, would glace at the sight of the youth incarnated; No. —- There was something else. Something beyond imagination and comprehension. It was something that raised the element of unpredictability on a high scale; it was another figure; one that brought a gargantuan amount of familiarity. A recognizable one that appeared to be aetherial, nay. Big and bright blue complexions accompanied with a rose shade dusted upon cheeks, blond and silky strands that were always disarrayed, and of course — a smile. A smile that was very distinctive. A smile that illustrated strength, confidence, determination — as well as concealing pain and vulnerability. A frame depicting a youthful individual that holds aspirations greater than life itself. A young boy that was given nothing yet wishes to offer everything. To be acknowledged as someone important in this world; a symbolic figure. A symbol of peace.

                                  That boy’s name was Toshinori Yagi.

          Perhaps this was a monadical way of life showcasing some final moments of his past; a vow to never forget where he came from and what he had underwent through. Or maybe this was an illusion performed by a mastermind to complicate things; a perfect distraction. But in the end, it didn’t truly matter. Perhaps this was for the better; his life is flashing right in front of his eyes. He knew, that he didn't have much time left in his body and soul. Thus, he had to act fast and end this evilness once and for all.

          And yet, his enormously built legs refused to move forward. He was standing like an unimpeded obstacle. He was still staring at the sight of his own self during childhood — slowly evaporating like smoke of a cigarette. Or more likely; altering its shape entirely. Taking a different formation in which again — he was very well acquainted with. There was no longer his own quirkless self, but rather, another young individuality. One that he deemed as the one to inherit what he was once given. One that will be recognized as someone meritorious and necessary for this world. One that responds to the name of Izuku Midoriya; an absolute reminiscence of his past self, manifested upon his eyesight. A timid yet brave frame with disheveled evergreen locks, deep green irises, numerable frecknles ornamenting cheeks — but there was no formation of lips in an upward curve; there was no smile plastered upon the youth’s face. Lieu, it was the opposite; divulging a mixture of disheartenment, anguish, sadness and overtly, fear. The fear of losing a meaningful presence like the gallantry personified. The fear of losing the beacon of hope. The fear of losing someone significant. Toshinori knew — and had the same fear; to lose the most important people in his life. Therefore, he shall become a shield to provide protection and would gladly sacrifice his life, if deemed necessary. For the betterment of humanity, he will gladly lay his life down and become a step for the upcoming generation to overcome. And that boy; that particular boy was no exception to this rule.

          But before the omnipotence proceeds any further, he had to do one last thing. Henceforth, his feet finally began moving, having the shorter facade at his destination. Moments thereafter he would cease his pattern of walking. Distinguishable canvas unveiled nothing but a customary expression; an undaunted attitude, offering traces of assurance. A vaunted trait of his that he has attained throughout the years. But was that really the case for this situation? Could his so - called everlasting smile of his provide some security and aleviation? A question that seemed rhetorical, almost — with the obvious answer demonstrated upon his view. He knew that words of solace would be meaningless. The current sight was the actualization of a nightmare, for a boy like him. Young Midoriya had to stay strong, and All Might, alongside the one behind such persona known as Toshinori Yagi, had to complete such task. For he is here, in the final moments as the Symbol of Peace. And so, he extended two vigorous arms, consequently encircling the significantly shorter facade, eventually bringing him closer — bringing him into an embrace. With one calloused palm he would pat the boy’s back in a biddable and repetitive manner, providing some relief and comfort; how absurd, considering the situation that is bound to take place. But it was unavoidable, nonetheless. And of course, the silence was about to be eviscerated by his own deep voice.

                    ❛ Though as much as I want to confirm your words, I cannot make false promises either. My own weakness doesn’t allow me to keep such promise. And I am truly sorry for this. I am truly sorry that you had to see this. ❜

          His voice halted instantaneously. He has understood the toughness; Pragmatically speaking, there was no easy or convenient route to choose from. He would permit a heavy sigh to eschew subtle lips that had just parted, as he was about to offer continuance of his incoming monologue of a response. De facto, such was the cruelty of reality. Furthermore, he had to be quick — he could sense habitual steam emitting from his enormous existence, indicating his limit to be reached soon. 

                    ❛ —- Unfortunately, I have to go. But before I do that, I need to get a few things out of my chest, since my time has come. My time has come and it’s time for someone else to take my spot. And that someone — that person, is you, young Midoriya. You — the timid and kind boy, with a great aspiration in life. You, a boy who dreams of becoming the greatest Hero ever. You, the boy that I deemed worthy of becoming my successor. You, the one that is going to surpass me, eventually. You, Midoriya Izuku. Thanks to you, I now know that I will march forward without any regrets. Thanks to you, I know what my role is. ❜

          Another pause, in an attempt for his cerebrum to collect the appropriate words in order to form concise sentences. But laconism was far from being presented here.

                    ❛ Words cannot describe how thankful I am to you. How thankful I am for having you in my life. From the day I encountered you, up to his day. Thanks to you, I was able to gain a new pespective of life. I was able to remember who I used to be and what my role is. You are a great reminiscence of what I used to be, and your actions helped me in reminding who I was and what I wanted to be. Thanks to you, I realized my need to live. You became the reason for me to survive and to live.

                      I won’t lie — I was expecting for this moment to come. I wish there was a way to prevent all of this, but I know — we both know, that this was about to happen. I cannot deny this any longer. But this is fine. 

                      From the minute I witnessed your courageous act of heroism back then — I knew that choosing you as the one to pass the torch to, was the right choice. I knew in my heart that you were the one to inherit One for All, and become the one that will be celebrated as the greatest Hero, and someone that would extinguish malevolence once and for all. You will become someone important. You already are. To me, my boy.

                      You see — you’re not just a student of mine that I value wholeheartedly. You are more than that. You are more than just my successor. You are more than just the upcoming holder of this quirk. You are more than a great Hero. You are like a son to me. Like a child of my own. Quite bizarre, right? Even so, I thank you for that from the bottom of my heart. You made me experience things that I considered unimaginable and unachievable. And yet — you made them a reality. You made me experience in a way what fatherhood looks like. Heh — I know this is not the right moment to talk about such things, but better late than never, right? You know,

                      You are not perfect, and you don’t have to be perfect. You are such an amazing young man that I feel honored in becoming part in your life.           It took him a moment to realize the salty liquid substance that had morphed in the corner of his eyes, is now strolling through the pores of his face. Another deep exhalation took place, as he mustered enough willpower to separate himself from the youngster, completely. Usually, this essay tries to analyze functions and how the sub-group relates to each other and how it form the main or general subject of the topic. There are three elements in a division essay; The system, principle of analysis, and sub-system.

     Bellow is the example of a Division Essay. The topic in the essay is about stages of desperation in people. The essay will try to divide it into 5 division or sub-system which will tell relationship between each other and in the end tell how the sub-systems form the topic subject.

                                             5 Stages of Despair

          Despair is a situation which every human can experience. People are born with the ability to think and feel. Often we find someone who experience the moment of despair. This despairing moment is somewhat problematic, because sometimes, people don’t ever realize that they are actually in despair until it’s to late. The solution is to know more about this agonizing situation so that the one who suffers from it can do something about it. That is why there is a concept in the field of philosophy and psychology which is called 5 stages of despair which tries to divide into more identifiable sub-type so that we can easily understand it.

          Confusion is usually the first stage -but not always the case- into despair. In this stage, people will be in a confused state when dealing a problem. The cause is mostly their lack of preparation, more often their mental state are not ready for the problem presented to them. If it’s the first-time for them to face the problem, the chance of getting caught in this stage is higher. When people can’t get out from this stage, they will fall into the next stage, caused directly by this stage.

          Frustration comes after the confusion. In this stage, people who can’t handle the confusion caused by the problem will be frustrated because they can’t find the solution to the problem. In this stage, emotions are mostly concentrated in every negative ways. Mostly, this stage affect people mentally and physically, not so seldom people and their surrounding will directly or indirectly affected. Frustration at the highest level will lead into the next stage which is, subjectively, more despairing, Depression.

          Depression is the third stage by order (for convenience sake) in the 5 stages of despair and can be said as the climax. This stage is the most difficult stage to get out of from. The confusion and the frustration that are left unchecked will drag people who are facing a problem into the state of depression. This state will indicate the exhaustion of mind and spirit, as it will be very hard to ‘uplift’ oneself without clear answer to the problem. The exhaustion will finally lead to next stage, the one where some people are the scariest stage of all.

          Stagnation, as in stagnate meaning ceasing from any development or becoming inactive or dull. The word stagnation refers to the very life of the human who face a problem themselves. Lot of reports says that people who experience this stage are incapable of feeling anymore. In some rare cases, even their physical body is affected thus making them literally unable of feeling anything. At the end of the stage, there are only 2 things that can happen; Whether they choose to not prolong their suffering by picking the “easy option’ which some people considers it as running away. Or they move the next stage by some false hope or any kind of fake promises.

          Deception is stage where people who suffers a problem, having experienced all the 4 stages above, are given a superficial way of believing that everything is okay when in fact it isn’t. As the name of the stage suggested, people are in the stage of deception and lies thinking that there might be a solution to their problem, WITHOUT any solid prove that they will actually get out of despair. Sometimes, some people choose deliberately to be deceived in some form of fake love for themselves. At the end of this final stage, people usually loop back into one of the 4 situation before this until eventually they return to this stage and the circle form itself again and again.

          Knowing all the stages can help people to identify in which stage they are in so that they can act accordingly. Like it was mentioned before, Confusion might not be the stage people encounter first. They can feel frustration or even depression first, depending on the intensity of the problem faced. By learning each stage of the situation one can prepare themselves and try to get to 6th stage, which is called Acceptance stage. This 6th stage is the true solution of the situation as it stands outside of the circle of 5 stages of desperation. Only few people can achieve this stage, while many are often stuck in the 5 stages of despair.

          Depression is big subject of study in the field of psychology when it involves human being. Very often people encounter some examples whether directly or indirectly in the seemingly peaceful daily lives. WHO, in their website, says that close to eight hundred thousand people die to suicide every year in which the main cause is depression. It means that even right now among and around us, there might be people who suffers from it and we just don’t notice it because we don’t know the severity of it. To help people aware of it, depression can be classified into 3 classes with its own identifiable characteristic and those 3 classes are Mild, Moderate, and Major.

            Mild depression is the first class of depression where some symptoms are not seemingly showing or apparent. In this class, depression involves more than just feeling a little bit blue in a temporary manner. The state can go on for days without the people who suffers it realizing it. People will feel or exude some negative emotions which are considered small, so they themselves will sometimes ignore it. One example would be a feeling of irritability or anger that always come so sudden and hard to dismiss. Feeling hopelessness and despair would be another example, while in practice they will lose interest in doing anything. Psychical symptoms that are showing usually lose or gains of weight suddenly caused by lost of appetite or excessive hunger, body aches with no apparent reason and fatigue. Mild depression appear in most of people and always been mistreated poorly that it lead the sufferer into the second class of depression.

            Moderate depression shows more intense symptoms than the typical mild depression. The smaller emotions such as hopelessness, irritability and lack of interest that shows in mild depression accumulate forming a bigger non-physical problem such as low self-esteem. This will turn into high sense of worthlessness in oneself because the increased sensitivity makes them worry excessively. The physical toll will be even bigger than the previous class. It’s been reported before that people who suffer from this class are also suffering inability to reproduce. Some have high level of incurable insomnia. Few were even suffer from loss of function of body organs caused by intense stress, such as blindness or numbness. In this class, people really need a medical and professional help because when not treated, they will fall to the last M of the depression.

          Major, as the name suggested, is the biggest class of depression by intensity or severity. The urgency is shown by the increasing danger of the cause and symptoms this class shows. In this class, people will have an episode of delusion or hallucination in the most worrying manner. They will the sense of oneself and even lose all sense to recognize the world as it should be. Psychically, people who suffers major depression often lose consciousness because of the great fatigue their body have to endure. The worst-case scenario is that the people in this class will have suicidal behavior and thoughts. Unfortunately, some of them were even known to have ended their lives because they couldn’t handle the pressures. This is the last and the most dangerous class of depression.

          People need to be more aware of this classification of depression. It’s not just the government's duty to care about the mental health of their citizen. Human are social beings as they can not live by themselves. That is why we as people need to be responsible as to not let people fall into the hole of depression. We should do as much as we can to help people around us by being there with them when they needed help. Who knows we even might save one life from ending meaninglessly. Ultimately, we might even save ourselves.

Episode 17 - Iron heart

Order was restored in the city, yet damages and losses had been done. 

Agents of Division one assess the aftermath of the chaos that resulted in 

1) destruction across the city, 2) Kagari unaccounted for, and 3) one enforcer of Division two took advantage of the chaos and fled.

Masaoka asked Ginoza if he thought Kagari would escape.

Tsunemori wondered if they had won. Kogami replied "Detective work is, by nature, about treating wounds. Our investigations start after there are victims."

"But at least with this lost game we were able to end in a draw. We just have to settle with that." "In the end, what did all that talk about the safety of the Sibyl system mean?" "A safe and perfect society is just an illusion."

"In this society, people depend on things that are convenient but also dangerous. Our government made us take risks. But the risks were dispersed and distributed so cleverly that no one was able to notice it." 

"Everyone might have been looking the other way. Precisely because there was danger...they had to act as if there wasn't instead, in order to keep their sanity." ep17-07 "I don't like to lump people together when I speak, since everyone is different...but I'll generalize broadly here."

"They can unknowingly try to evade their responsibilities."* Then Kogami changed the subject, saying that "how they're going to judge Makishima...the problem is what happens next. It's a far more difficult and troublesome task than shooting a dominator." 

"it's an undeniable fact that he committed crimes." Kogami said in a teeth-gritting voice. "In any case, we still have that idiot Kagari to worry about. He split off from us and went down to the basement. Why did the communication end there?"

Ginoza and the others were still assessing the damages caused by the chaos instigated by Makishima. Kunizuka noted that "a large number of people needing mental care...detention facilities overflowing with people...economic losses due to crippled city functions..."

"It's too early to talk in the past tense. There's still the matter of his sentencing... The judiciary has been abolished for a while now. It will probably be difficult to prosecute someone based solely on evidence" said Masaoka.

Masaoka, "Okay. Okay." Then, Ginoza got a call from the PSB Chief. The Chief told Ginoza that the cases Makashima was involved in would be investigated by a special team formed by the Ministry of Welfare, and it was thus out of the hands of the PSB. 

The Chief continued saying that Makishima's case being a unique one, medical staff would have to be there whenever he is interrogated, and it was important to keep the information confidential. Ginoza tried to voice his opposition, "Makashima Shogo was very likely involved in various crimes in the past. In order for the facts to come to light, the PSB needs to be able to interrogate him!" "Are there any unsolved cases in those past crimes you mentioned?" "No...but..."

"No, he was disposed of." The Chief corrected herself. "Rather than being worried about an arrested criminal, you have a big problem at division 1, don't you? An Enforcer escaped...and he's still missing." Ginoza, "We still don't know if he really escaped." Chief, "The Sibyl system has already been restored. Enforcer Kagari hasn't been caught by the surveillance network because he's been steering clear of it as he moves about. As it stands, you'll be held responsible." "That's...uh..." When Ginoza told division 1 the Chief's decision, Kogami exploded.

"What makes you think you can talk to me like that?! You're an Enforcer!" Kogami, "This is not the time to discuss our positions! It's strange that we aren't even allowed to question him when we were the ones who arrested him, isn't it?!" "It wasn't my decision, if you want to complain..." "'If you want to complain, talk to the Chief directly.' Is that it?! I'm an Enforcer, there's no way I can see the Chief, is there?! If I actually march into her office, it's you who will be in trouble, inspector." Then, as Kogami walked out of the office, Kunizuka shut her eyes. Her eyes remained closed as she answered Tsunemori's question of what would happen.

Ginoza ordered the division to search for Kagari. "Depending on his actions, it could mean the end of the PSB for different reasons."

Makishima came to. The Chief greeted him, "It's been a while, Shogo. It's good to see you haven't changed a bit."

"I don't think we know each other." "Well, my appearance has changed quite a bit in the past three years, so...First, I need to offer you an apology. About the book I borrowed from you a while back...I lost it due to the troubles that I had to go through." Makishima took the book and was noticeably surprised. The person he lent that book to was Touma Kouzaburo.

Makishima asked the chief for confirmation. And the reply was

Makishima smashed an equipment onto the chief, who begged him to stop.

Makishima blew a hole on the plane and escaped.

Kogami got up from a nap, about to drink coffee when he felt Makishima appeared next to him.

Shocked, he leapt away. Panting, he looked at where he felt the presence of Makishima and saw no one. Then he received a call from Makashima.

"It's not something worth you putting your life on the line to protect. I just wanted to let you know that. Well then, I'll see you around." Kogami called Ginoza, and was told that the plane carrying Makishima reportedly crashed.

*The subtitle provided was "We can involuntarily try to avoid our responsibilities" However, the very sentence that Kogami spoke before this one still carried the hint that Kogami regarded himself an outsider to the society, and to the human race as a whole. It made no sense if he would go from seeing himself an outsider from one sentence to adopting an exact opposite attitude in the next. Comment 1) Things I noticed from the conversation between Kogami and Tsunemori. Kogami distanced himself from the society he observed, he didn't consider himself a member of the society he lived in; he considered himself an outsider. Tsunemori, on the other hand, regarded herself a member of that society.

2) The conversation between Makishima and the chief touched on multiple topics. And it took me quite a bit to figure out how to summarize it. Makishima and Touma were similar in the sense that they both saw themselves outsiders to the human race and, with their level of intelligence, they did not see other humans on equal footing. The difference between them, though, was that Touma still yearn for recognition and wanted to be worshipped. It would satisfy his vanity even if that came from people he thought were beneath him. And in the process of playing God, he actually came to care about the world. Makishima was not one who would take up the burden of becoming God for those who lived like livestock, those he considered humans in shape only, and their worship was worthless. He want to find meanings, and he wanted to be entertained by seeing others acting on their own free will, making their own decisions. Sibyl, being a system that took care of everything for everyone and made things effortless and meaningless for everyone, was precisely what Makishima wanted to destroy. The knowledge that Sibyl system was a congregation of human brains only made Makishima despise it even more.
