I am absolutely begging people to stop treating nazism as their big, bad blorbo caricature they can just invoke when they're mildly irritated about people who (they think) have Bad Opinions.

Nazism is not just "any time a Bad Guy does Bad Things." Nazism is not your final jojo stand you can invoke to win discussions or debates. It is a real life ideology that is intrinsically linked to the radical antisemitism it espouses and ignoring that is fundamentally harmful to the point of being radically antisemetic.

Since this is on-topic, I've been reading People Love Dead Jews (I am on chapter two), and I think downplaying nazism is absolutely part of de-emphasizing and reprioritizing antisemitism to make it about everything else but the antisemitism. When nazism is everything, then it can't be fundamentally antisemetic. You won't have to acknowledge that jews are the primary target of nazis and nazism if nazis are everything else. It's not a coincidence, especially seeing how many jews people call nazis. This is part of the dead jew that people love - if your eye is turned away from the fact that jews both exist still and are affected by violence and oppression, you get to say, "the jew is dead!".

Something I really like about timebomb is that Ekko actually knows what he's getting into.

I'm not really seeing it get talked about but in season 1 they mention that Ekko and the firelights help people addicted to shimmer get off it and lead more fulfilling lives within the community. I should probably rewatch the scene for the exact wording (might be misremembering tbh) but that comment implies A LOT.

First: Ekko's mission is helping people where he can, he would probably try and help Jinx even if he wasn't in love with her

Second: He has experience dealing with severe mental illness as that often goes hand in hand with drug abuse, namely depression/suicidal ideation like what Jinx was exhibiting

Third: He's probably mapped out best course of action FOR dealing with this and has already figured out his own limits/boundaries. Meaning he knew what he was getting into trying to talk Jinx out of suicide, and was thus more equipped to deal with the aftermath

Fourth: He's probably helped ex members of Silco's gang. The firelights seem to have a theme of healing and repairing and recovering, so they've probably also learned to forgive. If they're mission is to rebuild the lanes into a safe space, they can't exclude people they don't like, they have to make room for them. I think they fought Silco out of necessity, and I doubt Jinx would be the first person they help who's killed one of them.

These all might be a bit of a stretch but I think it really fits. Beyond that, it shows that Ekko can ACTUALLY help Jinx. As much as unconditional love can do, Ekko has the tools for Jinx's recovery and a path ready for her. He also probably knows that her "healthy" will look different from AU Powder's "healthy." On top of that, I expect he knows how to respect her even in the middle of psychotic breaks and won't agitate her already frail mental state

Thinking about Prey again, and, more specifically (beware of massive spoilers from here on out) the choice to have Morgan Yu be a silent protagonist.

At first it seems like such an odd choice, because Morgan does have a voice - you're faced with it in old video and audio recordings, not to mention in the sentient memory copies that are January and December. When other characters encounter January, they comment on it speaking with Morgan's voice, despite Morgan themself never uttering a word. Other characters address Morgan as if expecting a response, and then keep on going seemingly without noticing they never got one. Part of me wondered why past-Morgan spoke but present-Morgan didn't, but, having previously played Half-Life and Portal, also featuring silent protagonists, my assumption was that hey, clearly this is a common video game mechanic. It doesn’t entirely make sense within the narrative since Morgan (unlike Freeman and Chell) is established to have a voice, but whatever, I'm capable of suspension of disbelief for the sake of the medium.

But with the ending reveal of Morgan not actually being Morgan but rather an alien typhon living through a simulation, it starts feeling much more narratively intentional. I went through the game saving as many people as possible because I'm a baby and I feel bad if I let the NPCs die. I never took into account wwmd - What Would Morgan Do - but in the little review at the end of the game when you find out you were an alien all along there’s this interesting line: "you're assuming it thinks like us." Every choice throughout the game becomes recontextualized. Did typhon-Morgan save people out of empathy, or because of some unknowable alien drive? Because you have no dialogue you can't really establish an underlying reasoning beforehand. I personally went from having projected my own reasoning onto Morgan to stopping and going wait... why would an alien do this? How does it think? What Would (Human) Morgan Do no longer matters; instead, the question is Why Did (Typhon) Morgan Do What They Did?

From a practical angle, it also makes sense. The typhon don’t speak, so of course typhon-Morgan also doesn't. The fact that it’s all a simulation means all the people they encounter can be programmed not to question this, thus never giving typhon-Morgan (or the player) a reason to question it either.

In the end, I simply find it fascinating and impressive how the game leveraged a common mechanic of the medium to become not only an integral part of the narrative, but also, through this leverage, tricks the player into not noticing it, only for it to change everything when you do.

Since we're getting closer to the release of the next Madoka Magica movie, I'd like to gently remind you guys that Rebellion doesn't have a single reliable narrator, and you really can't take anything the girls say as fact.

Madoka, Mami, and Kyoko have all had their memories tampered with by Homura and don't have the full story

Sayaka and Nagisa are both mentally fully there, but they're biased as they benefit from Madoka's system

Homura is being prodded by Kyubey, is in the middle of a mental breakdown, is missing key information, and is locked inside her own head where she is subconsciously filtering out and ejecting things that don't alight with the reality she wants there

This isn't to say that any of these girls are bad people or being intentionally manipulative. Just please keep in mind that all these characters' perspectives are skewed, and you really can't take everything they say at face value.
