Birds singing, leaves crunching, and the wind singing in your ears was all you could hear as the tour guide went on with their one-sided conversation of tour around Inverness, Scotland. If it weren’t for your worrisome supervisor, you’d be in the cute little cottage that you rented for the next few weeks, probably playing on your switch or watching Tigtog videos for hours on end. But noooo, they mandated that everyone had to go on this hour-long tour of the city to “get a nice perspective of the city” or whatever the hell they were rambling on about.
Each person was assigned a partner for the tours so they didn’t have to worry about anyone getting abducted or ‘lost’. Knowing better, you visibly rolled your eyes as your partner looked around like a kid in a candy store. Apparently the woman was from the marketing department as well, her name seeming to leave your memory as you squinted in her direction.
“You forgot my name again, didn’t you?”
“Pfft- no- no way!”
“Yea? Then what is it?”
“Uh, erm...It- it starts with a H, I know that!!”
“It’s Hoshi, or if you’d like to continue with formalities, Ms. Tenmei.”
Hanging your head in shame you look away. Getting lost in your thoughts once more, Hoshi taps on your shoulder.
“Hey, no worries! I’m pretty bad with names myself. How’s camera duty going?”
Saying this, the woman grabs the camera from your grasp, turning it back on to see the pictures you had taken thus far. Whistling, Hoshi looks back at you, noticing the lack of enthusiasm that was painted across your face.
“I know this tour is the last thing either of us want to do, but the quicker you get all those pictures for the portfolio, the quicker we can get out of here and grab a drink. It’ll be my treat if you can get all of them before the end of the tour.”
Nodding your head, you grab the camera back from her, beginning to focus it on a nice view of the lake from the bridge the two of you were standing on. Before you can snap the shot, the tour-guide’s voice snaps you out of your thoughts as he begins to speak about a more interesting topic.
“It’s said that this lake has a kelpie spirit living within its waters. Although, that can be said about any lake that’s big enough to swim in.”
As most tourists begin to talk amongst themselves, you grip onto the expensive camera once more, hoping to find that perfect shot you had before the man’s shrilling voice had interrupted your train of thought.
“Mommy, what’s a kelpie?”
As the little boy spoke, you took the chance to snap the shot as a bird flew on the lake's surface, leaving a black blur on the perfect shot!
‘You’ve got to be kidding me!’
The tour guide you grew to despise butted into the pair’s conversation to answer the boys question.
“That’s a good question kiddo! It’s said that the origins of the Kelpie were originally told as warnings to women and children alike to be alert at all times when not around their loved ones. Despite this, you can ask any local in the area and most could tell you their story of encountering the supposed myth. I suppose we’ll never know till we see one for ourselves. Though, if you’re unlucky enough to encounter such a myth, there’s the chance that you won’t live to tell the tale...”
The boy trembled as he gripped his mother’s dress tighter in his clutch. Your partner begins to scoot closer to you as she whispers into your ear.
“Psst! Hey, what do you think about those ‘kelpie’ hm?”
“It sounds like some sort of folk-lore they tell all the tourists here.”
“Oh c’mon now, you’re no fun! I’d like to think they might not be as brutal as this guy says.”
Scoffing, you shake your partner’s hand from your shoulder as you look into the camera’s lens once more to take another picture.
‘I’m sure it’s all bullshit. There’s no such thing as a shape-shifting kel-‘
Thinking this, you suddenly feel your body begin to fall forward as the bridge railing suddenly let out from beneath you. Before you realize it, you open your eyes to see the water's surface only a mere foot or two from your own face, the camera hanging by your neck and grazing the lake, your body beginning to be pulled back to its upright position.
Turning around to thank whoever it was that just saved you from having to pay for the company camera, you look to see nobody behind you. Nobody seemed to even be around you as you see Hoshi following behind the group of tourists, leaving you in the dust. You begin to chase after the group as you shake off the entire encounter.
Shuffling your bag off of your shoulder you threw it into the nearby chair, slumping into the couch that was adjacent to the chair. You began to hum to yourself as you felt the effects of the beer contest you had with Hoshi who you now knew was your supervisor. Thinking to yourself you remember losing that contest the two of you set up.
‘It was nice of her to pay for us and to bring me back home even though I lost. I should thank her tomorrow and try to pay her back if I can.’
Suddenly feeling the effects of the liquid courage, you stood up a bit too quickly, reaching your hand out to the couch you were just laying on. Not sure what to do, you reached for your phone to scroll through Tigtog, that was until you began to hear something strange. From what you could tell, it sounded like a voice, though you weren’t sure if it was male or female. Curiosity began to take the lead as you stood upright once more. Looking around, you began to walk around the cottage, seeing if there was anything on that could be making that noise. Eventually you found yourself outside in what looked to be the backyard of your little cottage, swaying side to side as you tried to listen for the voice once more.
“Y/N? Are- are you there?”
Under normal circumstances, after hearing an unknown males voice you’d already be locking the backdoor behind you after racing to that door. Tonight, however, was not the case as you yelled back the best you could of a response.
“yYeaa! Wwwhooo- whoo arre yOU?”
After saying this, you suddenly began to burp, probably due to the alcohol. Despite everything you had experienced thus far, for some reason your fit of burps could not be funner to you at that very moment as the voice spoke once more.
“T-That’s not important r-right now. I just wanted to make sure you made it back home safe.”
The liquid courage that coursed through your veins decided that you wanted to find out more about this stranger and began to walk into the forest. You began to sway as you attempted to find them, calling out to them in hopes of convincing them to stay and hang out.
“OoooOh c’mON now!! Don’t be liiiike that! Wh-wherrrreeee are ya? Le-le-let’s hanggg ouT for a bit! I-I *hic* think there’s cards in the liv-livingg roooom~! We- we can play a gggame of poKER and- and see what’s in the fridge. Man, now I’m hungryyy!”
Despite your lack of sobriety at the moment, you began to hear a few leaves crunch nearby. It appeared that for some reason or another, what you lacked in logic you seemed to gain in your basic senses. This theory proved true as you sniffed the air, you noticed that there was a lake nearby.
‘Since when the hell did I know what a river smelled like?’
Before you can continue on with your train of thought, the stranger responds once more. They seemed a bit panicked as you heard a twig snap, followed by more leaves crunching beneath their feet you suspected.
“D-D-Don’t come any closer! Y-You should go back h-home, you’re not t-thinking rationally.”
Not wanting to take no for an answer, you continue to walk to the source of the sound, hearing what sounded like a cascading river growing louder. Looking through the trees, you noticed a few yards away the river you had just heard. You speak up once more as you begin to walk toward the river.
“I-I don’t want to be alone r-right now… It-it’s stupid I know, I just...I’d just like to talk, just for a little bit. Would that be okay?”
Your vision began to blur as you rushed to the river's edge. It didn’t matter now if the stranger responded or not, your world began to crash down around you as you looked at the reflection on the water's edge. Sitting on your knees, small whimpers escaped your lips out as you covered your face with your hands. Despite the literal lack of sight, your emotions consumed you as it felt that everything around you was losing the light that once shone in your hopeful eyes.
At this point, you couldn’t hear any signs of life as you gripped harder at your face, only the sound of your quiet cries for help being all that echoed through that hollow forest. Assuming the worst, you began to move your hands from your face, dropping them by your side once more as you looked at your reflection once again.
“Y-You said you wanted to talk? T-That’d be fine, just- just promise you won’t cry anymore?”
There's a beat of silence, it seemed that not even the wind could speak as your body froze. Sure, you could convince yourself that you were just hearing things, that you were just acting aloof because you were feeling lonely. If you could get yourself on the couch, you could wake up and even tell yourself that the whole experience was just a really surreal dream you had. What you couldn’t convince yourself was the half naked man that appeared to be standing a few feet behind you, his voice matching his lips as you watched them move.
‘Maybe- maybe I’m just seeing things? That-that has to be right, right?! But alcohol doesn’t cause hallucinations and I’m positive that none of my drinks were spiked. So- so...Who the hell is this!?!’
“Are- are you okay Y/N?”
Your body grew stiff as you heard your name roll off of his tongue. If you weren’t getting clearheaded before, you definitely were cold sober now. Those shy indigo eyes that seemed to stare back at your own off of the river's surface as they brought you back to your senses.
‘There is a strange, half-naked man, who somehow knows you by your name, staring at you- talking to you! He doesn’t seem very intimidating, but then again he is a stranger!! In the best case scenario, he could just be a nice guy who found someone in need. Worst case, he’s a psycho that found their next victim! I can’t keep my back turned like this, I have to do something and get the hell out of this!’
Taking a shallow breath in, you swiftly turn your entire body around, facing the stranger that now made your body shiver in fear as you looked up at him. Despite the appearance of the situation, the man seemed to be intimidated by you as he looked away.
‘He doesn’t really seem like he wants to hurt me. If anything, he’s scared of me? Maybe I can intimidate him to leave me alone? Though, I don’t think I could pull it off seeing as I’m still a bit drunk…’
“Y-Y/N?”
Looking back at the man, you notice he begins to reach his hand out toward you, slowly beginning to walk toward your crouched form. Worried for the worst, you scoot away as you respond.
“H-HEY!! D-Don’t come any c-closer! If-If you don’t I-I’ll- ACK!”
Speaking this, you only now notice that there didn’t seem to be any more ground beneath you as you felt your body begin to fall into the river.
“Y/N!”
Before you can process everything that’s happening, you close your eyes in anticipation for the cold water that was bound to drown you. The stranger grabs your wrist, holding your body up above the river, your body mere inches from being submerged in the cold water. Noticing the lack of impact, you flutter your eyes open as you look back at the man before you. Shocked, the man looks down at where he grabbed your wrists. Only now do you notice a purple hue that surrounded both your arms.
“What- what is this?!”
At a loss for words, the man can only look back between your face and where he held your wrist. Confused and scared, you rip your arm from his grip as you stand yourself back up. As you stare at the man, you look around, befuddled by whatever the hell had just happened.
While a part of you would love to ask what just happened, the more logical side of you knew that none of this was worth hanging around to find out. Dusting yourself off, the man speaks up once more as he looks away in what seemed to be guilt.
“Y-Y/N, I-I’m so so-sorry!! I-I didn’t mean to t-touch you- What have I done?!”
Not wanting to wait any longer, you began to shuffle around the man, holding your hands up in surrender as you attempted to empathize with the man. Although, you weren’t sure why he was so worried since he didn’t seem to do anything besides whatever that purple glow was moments before.
“Hey, hey! We don’t have to speak about any of this. I’ll go back and after that we won’t have to ever see each other ever again, okay?”
“Y/N, i-it’s not that simpl- h-Hey, WAIT!!”
Before he had a chance to explain, you sprinted back to your cute rental cottage that you were now wishing you never left. Looking back, you notice the man just stood there as you were almost home.
Suddenly, your body stopped moving. What was even stranger, your body seemed to freeze mid-sprint. Looking around, you noticed that somehow your head was able to move but your arms were stiff as you attempted to force your body to run once more. Just as you were about to give up, your legs moved once more, wobbling as they felt gravity work once more. Not taking any chances, you began to dash once more. Not a second later, your body rolled forward from some sort of large and heavy impact. After your body finished rolling forward, you noticed that you were sitting in the backyard of the cottage, the man sitting on his head as his body laid against the door.
“W-Who or-or What are you?”
The man sighs as he flutters his eyes open, rubbing his head as he looks up at you.
“M-My name’s T-Tamaki Amajiki, and- and I’m a kelpie…”

“How does a moment last forever? How can a story never die? It is love we must hold onto -- Never easy, but we try. Sometimes our happiness is captured; Somehow our time and place stand still... Love lives on inside our hearts and always will... Minutes turn to hours, days to years, then gone, But when all else has been forgotten, Still our song lives on...”
~“How Does a Moment Last Forever? (cover)” by Celine Dion

The kelpie known as Ru Ollivander always knew their time on Earth would be fleeting -- at least, in comparison to the human witches and wizards they’d ended up living alongside. It was the main reason Ru had such a passion for photography, animation, and moving pictures. The thought of capturing a single moment and making it last beyond that moment...making it possible to relive that moment over and over again, as many times as one wanted...it was meaningful in a way Ru couldn’t quite put into words.
And so over the years, the eccentric, blunt kelpie -- never the best at expressing themselves in the way more upright, classy humans did -- captured as many memories as they could of the things they found most remarkable about the Wizarding World they’d entered. They sketched the rows upon rows of disgusting-looking ingredients in jars set up in the Potions classroom. They took pictures of the way the moon looked from the Astronomy Tower after a thunderstorm. They made animations of how Venomous Tentaculas and Mandrakes grew, compressing entire months into mere seconds. And, of course, over the years, Ru used their cinematograph, Aeroscope, and other cameras to film the humans who had become most important to them -- their best friend, Galen Stagg @cursebreakerfarrier; their fellow Ravenclaw and Galen’s eventual other half, Siobhan Llewelyn @kc-needs-coffee; and their “keeper”-turned-muse-and-life partner, Estrid Soelberg @thatravenpuffwitch.
One morning, however, in the 1930′s, Estrid returned to the cottage she shared with Ru from a trip to the market to find the entire place in disarray. A table had been overturned, Ru’s camera was knocked over on its side, and a drawer of photographs had been pulled out, its contents spread out all over the floor. Alarmed, Estrid rushed to find Ru -- when she did, she found them on the floor, in full kelpie form, looking very restless and distraught as they huffed and puffed through their nose and mouth. Estrid hurriedly rushed over and bent down, trying to help, but it soon became clear what the problem was.
Ru couldn’t change form. They couldn’t transform themselves out of their real appearance. ...They couldn’t turn into a human anymore.
The realization overwhelmed Ru. As much as they always knew the day would come, it wasn’t any less devastating. They’d never have hands again. They’d never have legs or feet again. They’d never speak properly again. They’d never be able to take any more pictures, or make any more movies, or make improvements to their cameras, or draw any more sketches or animations. They’d never be able to visit Galen’s classroom anymore for his lectures. They’d never be able to exchange any more friendly swears with Siobhan over a game of Wizard’s Chess. ...They’d never be able to comfort Estrid again...never be able to stroke her hair and hold her until she stopped crying...never be able to play her film reels of her grandfather, or plant flowers in the garden with her, or dance with her in the rain...they’d never be able to tell her how much they loved her.
The kelpie’s eyes fell toward the ground, darkening, as they flooded with tears. Those tears streaked down their long face in cold, deafening silence. Estrid, who’d almost never seen Ru cry in all their time together, found herself struggling not to break down completely herself as she threw her arms around Ru’s snout and hugged them, resting her face in their overgrown seaweed mane. The two sat together on the floor for what felt like hours, crying and cuddling as best they could, Ru pressing their soft nose into Estrid’s cheek and the crook of her neck and Estrid kissing their nose and the top of their head.
Estrid wrote to the Staggs to pass along the news. Galen pretty much dropped everything to be by his friend’s side -- the magizoologist had always had a particular talent for speaking to magical creatures, and it had never been more useful than in those final weeks of Ru’s life. It seemed that what upset Ru most out of everything was that they’d had a project they hadn’t been able to finish. It was an incomplete film reel they’d stored under their and Estrid’s bed for the last year, taking out and working on only whenever Estrid wasn’t home.
Galen had made as if to go get it, but Ru had snatched his sleeve in their teeth and pulled him back so he couldn’t leave their side.
“Not yet,” they were clearly saying. “It’s not time. Please, not yet.”
Reluctantly Galen respected his friend’s wishes.
Within a month of them being unable to change back into a human, Galen and Siobhan received the owl they’d been dreading. Ru had passed the previous night, Estrid by their side all the way up until the end.
As per Ru’s wishes, their funeral service was very small. They were laid to rest beside the small pond behind their and Estrid’s cottage -- Galen knew that kelpies’ bodies tended to decompose quickly, leaving only the seaweed of their manes behind at the bottom of the seafloor. There wasn’t a dry eye during the modest ceremony.
On Galen’s prompting, Estrid went to their room and fetched Ru’s unfinished project from under their bed. Inside the box holding the film reel were hundreds, maybe thousands of old photographs and drawings, many of which Galen, Estrid, and Siobhan had never seen. Some featured Hogwarts, from different angles; some were of the places they’d been to, or the creatures they handled, or the food they ate, or just cool and random things they only half-remembered. Most of all, though, the pictures were of them...and a small fraction, toward the very front, were of Ru themselves.
It was incredible, just looking through the pictures. Forty years of memories were compiled together, documenting not just the changes in those years, but the advancement in Ru’s talent as an artist. The newest pictures were so much clearer and more life-like -- the magical ones moved with such clarity -- the drawings were more refined -- the animations more complex. The pictures placed side-by-side were an animation unto themselves: a beautiful montage of time, like a blooming flower.
Siobhan was the one who knew Ru’s equipment well enough to work out how to set up the projector so they could play the incomplete film reel. The beginning featured Ru as the three remembered them -- very long, wavy black hair, bright blue angled eyes, and diamond earrings, dressed in a dark violet velvet suit and vest with no collared shirt underneath and a gold and emerald necklace around their neck. They were smirking right at the camera, but it seemed to be a bit strained.
“Hi, Estrid. Galen...Siobhan...reckon you’re both here too. You are the only one who could ever figure out how to work the projector, Sha.”
They cleared their throat, snorting through their nose before continuing.
“...I’ve...recorded this a few times already, trying to get it right, but...well, I’ll just be straight. This morning...I had trouble creating my daddles.”
They held up their right hand and flourished the fingers in explanation.
“I woke up with hooves and it took me about a minute to conjure up my fingers. I didn’t tell you, Estrid, since I knew it’d only make you worry, but...well, I know I’ll only be doing more of that, soon.”
They forced a stronger smirk.
“So I decided to make this for you. It’s a compilation of our lives...one that you can hopefully play, when you need to remember. When you need to get away from the present, and run back to the past for a bit. Watch it every time you feel the urge to drink -- and then push away that urge.”
The moving image of Ru was replaced with the pictures, movies, drawings, and animations the three had seen in the box, overlaying Ru’s voice as they continued.
“When I first started disguising myself as Rudolph Ollivander, all I cared about was living in the moment. But the thing I found so amazing about being human was this instinct you all have to try to make moments last long after they’re over. Considering how long you all live, and therefore how short my existence is in comparison, I loved the thought of making something last. Something I made last. I wanted to plant some seed that would grow into something that would keep growing long after me. But it didn’t take me long to realize that even if I took great photographs, or made beautiful films, or made the best magical camera in the world...it didn’t matter. Because I didn’t have a family who would tend to my garden, after I left it. I didn’t have a family who would keep the things I’d made, and pass them on, and share them with the world. ...I didn’t have a family who would pass on my legacy. After Hogwarts, it’d be a lot harder to hide what I was from the world...and once everyone knew the truth, I would undoubtedly be alone again. It was something I knew was inevitable, really, so it didn’t break me or anything...but me leaving something lasting behind was still a dream I knew would never come true. And I won’t lie, that hurt like shit.
“But then, somehow...somehow or another, I ran into you, Estrid. I was steamed as all get-out when we first met, mind you...but I don’t think I’ll ever be more grateful for anything than you stopping me from eating that first year that day. The bridle you put on me? I hated it. I had to stay in one form for almost eight whole years, and that was a real pain in the arse. But as I told you before, over time, I found I didn’t mind so much. Kelpies don’t stay in one form because changing forms helps us survive. It keeps us safe and keeps any other creatures from getting close enough to eat or trap us. And sure, I couldn’t change form...but I wasn’t exactly trapped. Hogwarts was a fun place to be. There was a lot to learn and do and get into, and there were all sorts of rules to buck and dozens of lick-spittles to give a good arse-kicking to. And better still...there were even some humans that were fun to be around.”
The pictures all started to reflect Galen -- at the piano, with a tree of bowtruckles, laughing at a joke -- Galen and Ru running down the lane away from the Shrieking Shack --
“There were ones who were gentle. Pacifistic and wussy, yeah, but also...well, kind. Good at expressing their feelings and making others feel stronger. Good at being brave without being loud or obnoxious. Good at being a friend, to someone who didn’t know anything about friendship.”
The pictures then started to add Siobhan, often alongside Galen, but also on her own, or even with Estrid and Ru.
“There were ones who were clever. Too proud for their own good and prone to overthinking things that are really quite simple...but brilliant, and witty, and a blast to be around. Someone who you can share your interests with and know they appreciate them.”
The pictures then shifted over to Estrid with braids in her hair -- Estrid sitting by the pond in their garden -- Estrid dancing --
“And...there were ones who could change you...more than you ever thought possible.”
The pictures abruptly cut off -- Ru’s face returned to the projector. They were still talking to the camera, but it was clear they hadn’t intended for their face to be seen, as they weren’t looking straight at the lens anymore.
“A ‘keeper,’ who became a friend, and then a muse...and then something more. An equal and a partner...someone who makes you unafraid of the future and how fleeting life is, who actually makes you think that your life makes a difference. Who teaches you more than any book, without even trying. Someone patient, and brave, and compassionate...who never tries to stuff the silence full of worthless words...whose beauty masks a greater one underneath, one that few people ever are fortunate enough to see...”
Ru’s eyes on screen had begun to flood with tears. They closed their eyes and breathed in and out through their nose to try to get a rein on their emotions.
“...Estrid...my whole life, I wanted to leave something behind that would outlive me. That thing isn’t just my pictures, or my films, or my drawings -- it’s you. You are my legacy. You and Galen and Siobhan...you are the wonderful thing I’ll leave behind. It breaks my heart that I’ll have to...and it breaks my heart more, knowing I can’t make sure you all remain as you are, in this moment. Healthy. Successful. Stupid and happy and full of life.”
They forced a smile even as their electric blue eyes overflowed with tears that streaked down their face.
“I don’t have a family to make sure you all last beyond me...but I do have you. So, for me...I need you to tend to my garden. I need you to maintain my legacy -- by maintaining yourself. I need you to live, and heal, and grow, and do everything I can’t do...”
Ru was unable to keep themselves from breaking down into sobs. They bowed their head, clutching onto their own hair as they vainly tried to keep their voice steady.
“Don’t throw your time away. Don’t throw your lives away. If you do, I’ll never bloody forgive you!”
For the next minute they took a few stabilizing breaths, sucking in air shakily through their nose and mouth.
“Damn it...” they hissed under their breath. “Now I have to cut this...”
They swallowed, wiping the tears from their eyes with both hands. The tears left tracks on their face even as they forced themselves to return their focus to the camera.
“...Make every moment count...and when you can, make that moment last forever.
“I realized, when I was looking through my old pictures, that I’ve never really taken many pictures of me. I guess in the moment, I really was a lot more focused on capturing everything I saw, rather than myself. So here are some pictures I took more recently that have me in them. Hopefully you can use them to imagine me behind every picture I took earlier, of all of you. Even though I probably wasn’t smiling or anything...I’m sure you know I was enjoying myself, right? ...I did enjoy myself a lot, with all of you...”
They forced another smile, even though the tears on their face still shone in the light from the next room.
“I remember you once said, Galen, that you could see the love in the pictures I take. I still don’t really know what the hell that’s supposed to mean...but I reckon you bringing up love made some sense. I did love taking those pictures, every one of them -- and more than that...I learned about love, through the people in those pictures. So thank you. Thank you for loving me...and for teaching me so much. And even when this film reel’s obsolete, and my pictures are ruined, and my drawings fade...don’t stop doing things that are worth remembering. Keep making more memories. I know I’ll never forget you -- all you have to do now is make sure the rest of the world won’t either.
“So live. Live, and learn, and love. Make today last forever.”
When Ru’s film reel finally ended and faded to black, Galen, Siobhan, and Estrid were all in tears. Galen was clinging to his wife, his face buried in her hair and his hands clutching at the back of her dress as he sobbed. Siobhan herself had her eyes shut tight as she held Galen in return, unable to contain her own grief. Estrid was holding herself, tears streaming from her hazel eyes still staring at the blank projector screen where Ru had been smiling moments earlier. She closed her eyes, her hands covering her face as she cried silently.
The grief in the room was overwhelming, and yet Ru’s final unfinished present tapped into something at the base of the grief -- the deep, bottomless love they all felt. For as blunt and stubborn as Ru could be, the depth of their feelings was undeniable. They didn’t want their loved ones to despair -- they wanted them to remember, yes, but not languish in the memories...to live with an eye on the past and feet walking toward the future. Ru knew the grief Estrid had gone through when she’d lost her grandfather, and had tried so hard to give her something to help her through her grief again even when they weren’t there to physically support her.
And so over the years, Siobhan, Galen, and Estrid maintained Ru’s legacy. The three lived their lives to the fullest and worked to make sure that no one forgot about all of the advancements Ru had made in the world of wizarding photography. Galen used Ru’s old film reels of magical creatures in his classes; Siobhan took even more pictures of her own; and Estrid fought to ensure Ru’s work was put up in wizarding museums and exhibitions all over Europe, as a testament to her partner’s talent and dedication.
A man has no control who lives, who dies, and who tells their story...but the ones who they love in life, and who inspire them in death, are the most precious legacy they can leave behind.

Lukadrien: Among the Wild Things: Chapter Eight
Read it on AO3: Among the Wild Things: Chapter Eight: Friends
“Nino! Marinette!” Adrien shouted, grinning like a madman as he darted across the study and threw his arms around his two closest friends.
“Adrien!” they chorused, wrapping him in bear hugs of their own.
“I can’t tell you how much I missed you guys,” Adrien whispered into Nino’s neck, squeezing them both tighter as he remembered how he had longed for his friends while he’d been away.
“Not as much as we missed you,” Nino assured.
Marinette gave a snort. “Speak for yourself. You just had to guard him. I had to dress him. Do you know how hard it is to keep this boy looking presentable?” she laughed. “He either rips or stains everything within a week of owning it. He’s impossible.”
Nino clicked his tongue. “You think dressing him is hard? You should try keeping him from getting himself killed. How do you think his clothes get ruined so regularly?”
“…Point,” Marinette conceded.
Adrien pulled back to pout at his friends. “Complain all you want, but I bet you’ve both been bored with me gone.”
Marinette and Nino shared a conspiring glance and burst out laughing.
“Guilty,” Marinette admitted. “The break was nice, but I’m ecstatic to be back in work…starting with your wedding-slash-coronation outfit!” she squealed in delight, colours and fabrics and patterns beginning to flow through her head.
“Speaking of which…” Nino tipped his head in order to look past Adrien at Luka. “I’m guessing this is your kelpie heartthrob ‘Orpheus’?”
Marinette smirked, breaking away from the boys to slowly approach Luka. “Hi. I’m Marinette. I’m sure he’s mentioned me.”
“He has,” Luka chuckled, standing and going to meet the enchanting seamstress. “It sounds like he mentioned me too.”
Marinette rolled her eyes. “Please. I only had to listen to him whine and mope about his supposedly ‘unrequited’ love for you for two months.”
“Marinette,” Adrien groaned, releasing his hold on Nino to go stop Marinette from further embarrassing him.
Luka quirked an eyebrow at his husband. “Two months, My Love? You sure fell for me quickly.”
“Like, the second he saw you,” Nino snickered, coming over to join the others.
“Et tu, Nino?” Adrien hissed accusatorily.
Nino shrugged.
Adrien turned his pout on Luka. “I was a mess.”
“You’re still a mess,” Luka chuckled, leaning in to give Adrien’s cheek an affectionate lick. “And I love you.”
“Aww,” Marinette cooed. “See, Adrien? I told you he was into you.”
“I told him that first,” Nino grumbled. “I’m the one who told him to go for it.”
Marinette waved Nino’s protests away. “I’m the one who helped him practice confessing because it made you too flustered when he practiced confessing to you.”
“Nette,” Nino hissed. “Stop. You’re going to give the guy’s husband the wrong idea.”
Luka snickered. “I actually came to the wrong conclusion all on my own when he told me he was in love with someone. I thought he was talking about you.” He tipped his head to indicate Nino.
Nino turned to glare blandly at Adrien. “Dude. How did you screw up the confession that badly that he didn’t even know who you were talking about?”
“We spent hours practicing, Adrien,” Marinette added, putting on a miffed, disappointed expression.
“In my defence, I was kind of distraught because my father had just told me I had to marry a woman I didn’t love,” Adrien whined as his friends ganged up on him.
Nino and Marinette both shook their heads unsympathetically, not letting up.
“That’s no excuse,” Nino sighed, hands going to his hips as he clicked his tongue in feigned disapproval.
Adrien crossed his arms over his chest, turning up his nose and looking away. “I don’t know why I missed you two so much. You’re both mean. My new fae friends are a lot nicer.”
“No, they’re not,” Luka snickered. “Kim and Alix regularly bully you. That’s why they’re your favourites.”
“Rose is my favourite,” Adrien corrected with a fond smile. “But, yeah. Giving each other trouble is how Nino, Marinette, and I show that we love one another, so Alix and Kim reminded me a lot of the things I missed from my old life.”
“Well, we’re glad that we count among the good things,” Nino replied, giving Adrien’s arm a pat.
“And we’re glad things have been going well for you since you left too,” Marinette added. “We kept hoping that you were happy wherever you were.”
Adrien’s face fell as a realization struck him square in the stomach. “…I didn’t say goodbye. …I didn’t tell you where I was going. Guys, I’m so sorry. I didn’t think…” He looked away. “Well, I mean, I did think about it after the fact when I’d been gone a few weeks, but…I didn’t dare come back. I—”
“—Adrien,” Nino cut him off gently. “It’s fine. We kind of figured where you’d gone.”
Adrien looked back and forth between his two friends. “You didn’t worry?”
“We did,” Marinette confessed. “A little bit, but not much. Like Nino said, we guessed that you’d run off with your Orpheus, and, wherever you were, we knew you’d probably be happier than you were here.”
Adrien blushed, looking down at his feet in a mix of guilt and shame. “I was. I’m really, really happy with Luc and his family. I feel like I’ve finally found the place I’m meant to be…the person I want to work towards becoming. I’m really happy in the enchanted forest.”
“Good,” Nino responded warmly, giving Adrien’s arm a supportive squeeze. “Maybe send us an ‘I’m not dead’ message next time…but good. I’m really glad that you found your place, Man.”
“Me too,” Marinette seconded.
“I’d love to show you my home.” Adrien perked up. “And introduce you to my new friends.”
He turned to Marinette. “You’ll love my sister-in-law Rose. She’s the sweetest, funniest person. And Mylène and Max and Ondine. And Alya.”
He looked to Nino. “I have got to introduce you to Alya. She’s a fox spirit who’s really fascinated with human affairs. She comes into the city a lot to people watch. I bet she would love some humans to talk to and ask questions.”
Adrien stopped abruptly, turning to his husband. “Orpheus, would it be okay for Marinette and Nino to visit me, or would they just wind up getting killed? Everyone back in the woods is perfectly civil with me, but…”
Luka pursed his lips as he considered the scenario. “I’d have to consult with Maman, but I think it might be okay if it’s just a short visit. Maybe a few hours tops. And they’d have to be chaperoned at all times.”
“Is it really so dangerous?” Nino inquired, quirking an eyebrow dubiously. “Adrien’s not in danger, is he?”
“No,” Luka quickly assured. “Adrien is fine. He’s protected, and the people mostly adore him. He’s a member of our community now. The forest is deadly to outsiders, though, so it would be unwise for either of you to waltz in unaccompanied. My people can be cruel and senselessly violent.”
Nino hummed curiously. “…Sorry if this is rude, but you don’t really look…threatening.”
“I was actually thinking the same thing,” Marinette sheepishly admitted. “You just look like a regular person.”
Luka snorted in laughter. “That would be the glamour you’re seeing. …Shall I drop it?”
Nino looked to Adrien. “Is he scary or something? I thought you told me he was the most beautiful man you’d ever seen.”
Adrien shook his head. “Beautiful doesn’t even begin to cover it. He’s ethereal.”
Marinette addressed Luka tentatively. “Do you mind, Luc? Sorry. We don’t mean to treat you like a curiosity. We—”
In the blink of an eye, Luka’s black hair was replaced by pale blue, and his eyes seemed to give off a Caribbean teal glow. The entirety of his being seemed to shimmer a bit, like sunlight reflecting off of a lake.
“Oh, wow,” Marinette gasped. “You…wow.”
“Yeah,” Nino gulped. “Wow is…” He turned to Adrien, whispering sotto voce, “Do all fae look that pretty?”
“Not all of them,” Adrien chuckled, amused by his friends’ reactions. “I’ve met a lot of attractive people in the forest, though.”
Luka’s eyes narrowed in displeasure and suspicion. “Like who? Kim?”
“Easy,” Adrien snickered, turning to face Luka and looping his arms around Luka’s waist. “No one is even half as attractive as you.”
Luka smiled into the kiss as Adrien pressed his lips to Luka’s in a vow of fidelity.
“Yeah, it’s highly unlikely Adrien will stray,” Nino testified. “He’s very loyal and takes matters of the heart incredibly seriously.”
“And he doesn’t fall in love easily,” Marinette agreed, nodding along to Nino’s points.
Luka arched an eyebrow at a blushing Adrien. “He doesn’t? I thought you two said he fell for me on sight.”
“Yeah, but that was the first and only time in nineteen years,” Marinette explained, waving away any concerns Luka might have. “And it’s not like it was for want of suitors. He grew up around plenty of pretty young nobles.”
Adrien’s face burned redder as Luka looked at him in astonishment, whispering, “I’m your first love?”
“First, last, and only,” Adrien mumbled, averting his gaze to help himself feel less transparent.
Luka wrapped his arms around Adrien as he gave him an affectionate squeeze. “I may have had other loves, but you’re the first person to turn my world upside down and wreck me. I had to update my definition of the word love when I met you.”
“I accept your attempts to butter me up,” Adrien chuckled, turning his head to press a kiss to Luka’s cheek.
“Aww,” Nino cooed. “Why can’t I meet someone who says sweet crap like that to me?”
“Maybe things will take a romantic turn between you and Adrien’s fox friend,” Marinette snickered.
Nino hummed thoughtfully. “Maybe. All I know is that I need to find someone to be that disgustingly cute with as soon as possible.”
“You two are adorable,” Marinette confirmed. “I can tell you’ve been really good for him,” she informed Luka with a tone of gratitude. “Just seeing him talking in that meeting earlier was a positive change.”
Luka arched an eyebrow, looking back and forth between Adrien and Marinette. “Really? He didn’t seem any different than usual to me.”
“Mec, the way he shut Viscount Raincomprix down when he was disrespecting you?” Nino had to try hard to contain another giggle fit as he called up the memory. “Nice spine, Your Majesty,” Nino chuckled, giving Adrien’s arm an appreciative punch. “It suits you.”
Adrien rubbed at the back of his neck. “As much as I’ve wanted to put those three blowhards in their place my entire life, I think I may have gone a bit too far. Viscount Raincomprix has been kind to me in the past, and I think I owe him an apology. He really looked shaken when I told him off.”
“I think that was mostly due to your eyes glowing like that,” Marinette weighed in.
“Yeah,” Nino agreed. “That was, perhaps, a bit much. It was super cool, though.”
Adrien blinked at his friends dumbly. “What are you guys talking about?”
Nino and Marinette shared a look.
“When your eyes were all molten and glow-y,” Nino clarified slowly, looking at Adrien expectantly.
Adrien turned to Luka. “Do you know what they’re talking about?”
Luka bit the inside of his cheek, avoiding his mate’s gaze. “…Your eyes may have started to glow whenever you’re experiencing intense emotions,” he reluctantly admitted.
“What?!” Adrien demanded, gaping at his husband incredulously. “Since when?! Why didn’t you say anything?!”
Luka winced, shoulders rising up to meet his ears as he shamefacedly confessed, “It started a couple months ago. I asked Maman, and it’s completely benign, and I thought it would only upset you, so I didn’t say anything.”
“I feel like…this is the kind of thing you mention?” Adrien choked, voice high and tight as he collapsed back down onto the couch.
“Dri, I’m sorry,” Luka cooed, sitting next to Adrien and tentatively cupping his cheek. “I should have said something, but I didn’t want to upset you when there was nothing we could do about it and it wasn’t hurting anything.”
“Well,” Adrien responded quietly, “I’m upset now…sort of.”
He took a deep breath and turned his gaze on his husband. “I’m more upset that you didn’t tell me than anything. Since when do we keep secrets from one another?”
Luka looked away, cowed. “We don’t,” he whispered penitently. “I’m so sorry, My Little Prince.”
Adrien leaned in to give Luka’s cheek a lick of forgiveness. “Don’t do it again.”
“I won’t. I promise,” Luka swore.
Satisfied, Adrien nodded, looking to Nino. “Does it at least look cool, or am I just terrifying?”
“I thought it was cool,” Marinette volunteered, going to sit in the armchair that Nathalie had recently vacated.
“Totally cool,” Nino affirmed, taking the other chair. He looked at Luka. “Can he do anything else?”
Adrien’s eyes narrowed at his mate.
Luka laughed, shaking his head. “Not at this point. Just the glowing eyes. Maybe in a few years new powers will manifest. I don’t personally know any other humans who have lived long-term among the fair folk, so I’m not quite sure what to expect, but this is hardly a unique situation. My people have been adopting mortals for centuries, so Adrien is hardly the first.”
“Something to look forward to, I suppose? Random new features,” Adrien sighed. “I mean, if these changes aren’t going to hurt anything, that’s fine, but…” He shifted uncomfortably.
“You’re upset,” Luka surmised, his mood plummeting.
Adrien shook his head, trying to reassure his mate. “No. Not really. Just…I felt like I had finally found my place, like I was getting my feet underneath me. …But since learning of my father’s death, it’s like I’ve been on shifting ground, and this is just one more thing to get used to. I’ll manage, but…I’m feeling a little overwhelmed today.”
“Understandably so,” Luka replied, slipping his arm around Adrien and resting his head against his mate’s. “Just tell me what you need, and I’ll move heaven and earth to make it happen.”
“Maybe just a break. A little joviality?” Adrien suggested, looking around at his spouse and his friends. “Nino. Say something funny.”
Nino balked. “What? On command? Adrien, I’m not the court jester. I can’t just say witty things at the drop of a hat.”
“I don’t know,” Marinette snickered. “You do a pretty good job of playing the fool any other time.”
Nino gasped, feigning indignation. “Adrien, do you hear what this mean, spiteful woman is saying about me? Defend my honor or something already.”
“Marinette, it is rather mean to say that to his face,” Adrien attempted to admonish with a straight face but ended up chuckling, ruining the effect.
“What can I say?” She grinned. “Real friends stab you in the front.”
“Thanks,” Nino replied dryly. “I really appreciate that….” He perked up after a beat. “…Say, why don’t we talk about Adrien’s adventures in fairy land? That should be fun, right? Tell us about all the weird stuff,” Nino urged, turning to Adrien with wide, hopeful eyes.
Marinette started to bounce in her seat in excitement. “What are the clothes like? Tell me all about fae fashion.”
Adrien acquiesced, sharing his impressions of his experiences as Marinette and Nino asked probing questions for nearly half an hour.
Luka mostly just listening, fascinated by Adrien’s perspective on things. He did, occasionally, field a few questions himself or add some clarification on things that Adrien was unsure about.
They eventually came to discuss Luka and Adrien’s fae wedding ceremony, and that led Marinette (after she had pumped them both dry of information) to remark, “You know, I should really get to work on the outfits for tomorrow’s wedding-slash-coronation. I have less than twenty-four hours, and, even if I pull an all-nighter, it’s going to be intense.”
She pursed her lips and studied Adrien. “Your father had actually instructed me to begin preparations of your wedding clothes before you left, and he had me continue work in the hopes that you would be found in time to marry on schedule, so I already have an outfit prepared for you. I just need to make alterations…unless you want a new outfit specifically for your marriage to Luc? Either way is fine.”
She tipped her head to the side and awaited his response.
He waved the idea away. “I’m sure that whatever you already have made is perfect, Marinette. We’ll just need something for Luc.”
Marinette hesitated before inquiring, “Would it be okay if I took your measurements, Luc? It’ll be real quick.”
Luka shrugged nonchalantly. “Whatever’s necessary. Did you mean now, or…?”
“I actually have my tape measure with me, so…” she informed, smiling sheepishly as she pulled it out of her belt.
Luka shrugged again, untangling himself from Adrien and standing up. “Let’s do it, then. How do you want me?”
Nino snorted, muttering, “That’s what he said.”
Adrien rolled his eyes at his best friend. “Stop thinking indecent thoughts about my husband.”
Nino put his hands up in a placating gesture. “Hey, Man. It’s not my fault that your husband is hot.”
“He is, isn’t he?” Adrien purred, admiring the view as Luka walked past.
Marinette motioned for Luka to come over closer to the fireplace where the light was better. “…Nino’s thinking it, so I’m just going to ask: Who tops?”
Nino clapped a hand over his mouth to keep from bursting out in astounded giggles.
“Marinette,” Adrien whined, face going phoenix red.
Luka smirked puckishly. “Mostly him, but we experiment according to whatever feels right in the moment.”
“Orpheuuuuus,” Adrien hissed in mortification.
Luka clicked his tongue even as he held still so that Marinette could take her measurements. “No need to be embarrassed, My Love. Is it not acceptable in your culture to talk about one’s love life?”
“Adrien is just sheltered,” Nino assured. “Please go on.”
“Is he a good lover?” Marinette inquired, sticking her tongue out at Adrien who let out a horrified squeal.
“Very,” Luka snickered. “In all the ways that really matter. He’s enthusiastic but attentive, adventurous but—”
“—Luuuc,” Adrien wailed. “Please stop. This really isn’t funny.”
“Speak for yourself,” Nino cackled. “I’m having a great time.”
“I hate you,” Adrien informed sulkily.
“Hey, Marinette’s the one over there pretty much begging for a demonstration,” Nino kindly threw his friend under the bus.
Luka choked on a laugh, the convulsion interrupting Marinette in the middle of her measurement so that she had to restart that portion.
“Be nice, Nino,” Marinette grumbled, suddenly losing her good humor.
Nino immediately sobered, backing off with a muttered, “Sorry, Nette.”
Marinette nodded mutely, pointedly focusing on the work at hand.
There was a tense silence hovering in the air until Nino got up and went over to sit on the sofa next to Adrien. The two cuddled up like puppies, and Nino recommenced catching up with his friend, sharing details from his own life that Adrien had missed in his absence.
Luka was content to listen as he watched Marinette at her work. He caught her looking over to the couch several times, a warm, affectionate, and yet melancholy quality to her gaze.
Luka’s eyes narrowed as he determined that she was sneaking looks at Adrien, and a cold realization turned Luka’s blood to cement.
“Forgive me for asking,” he whispered so softly that Nino and Adrien couldn’t hear over their own conversation. “but there wouldn’t happen to be something between you and Adrien, would there?”
Marinette gave a start, her fingers slipping, losing their place on the measuring tape.
“Sorry,” Luka quickly backpedaled. “It’s none of my business. It’s just the way you were looking at him, I…”
“O-Oh.” She nervously cleared her throat, trying to regain her composure. “No. No, it’s fine. I…It’s nothing, honestly. Nothing you need to be concerned about, anyway. It’s all in the past,” she confessed in a whisper. “You’d be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t been in love with Adrien at some point or another. I fell for him when I was thirteen, but…”
She paused, shaking her head and remeasuring from Luka’s hip to his shoulder. “I long ago came to terms with the fact that even if I had been born of his social station and become his wife, he would never feel for me the way that I used to feel for him. I was the first person he told about his attraction to men, and, after that, I promised myself that I wouldn’t allow myself to be miserable because of him. I also promised to do everything in my power to help him find happiness, so…”
She looked up at him, meeting Luka’s heavenly blue eyes with her marine ones, a fierce determination glowing from within. “I have never seen him as happy as he’s been since falling in love with you. Looking at him now, it makes my heart almost want to burst. I’m feeling a little nostalgic,” she admitted with a soft smile as she went back to taking measurements, “but I’ve moved on. I have someone wonderful in my life, so I have my own happiness. I don’t begrudge you yours, even though you have something I once wanted.”
“Good.” Luka breathed out his nerves. “You’re a very important friend to Adrien, and I wouldn’t want to be a cause of tension between you. You and Nino are extremely precious to him, and I don’t want to cause problems.”
Marinette shook her head, assuring, “You have nothing to worry about on my account.”
She raised her voice and added, “Nino is the one still hopelessly in love with Adrien. He’s the one you should worry about.”
Nino’s head snapped up, and he glared at his friend. “Nette, are you trying to make the king’s kelpie husband jealous so that he kills me or something? I am not in love with Adrien. Things are strictly platonic between us.”
Luka couldn’t help a stifled snicker. “Says the guy with my mate half in his lap.”
Adrien pressed the heel of his hand to his lips to keep in his own giggles at Nino’s expense.
“This is platonic snuggling,” Nino insisted, affronted by the accusation. “Do the fae not snuggle with friends?”
“Yes,” Luka conceded, “but are you trying to tell me that there’s nothing sexual about two guys on a couch with their limbs all entwined like that? This feels suspect to me.”
“Completely platonic,” Nino reasserted.
“Come on, Nino,” Marinette teased. “You know you would die for him.”
“Platonically!” Nino denied. “I’m his guard. It’s what guards do.”
Marinette turned to Luka with a cat-like smirk. “Nino was Adrien’s first kiss.”
“False!” Nino exclaimed, tan complexion going latte light as the blood drained from his face.
“Actually, Marinette was my first kiss,” Adrien finally spoke up in Nino’s defence.
Luka cocked an accusatory eyebrow at Marinette who grinned nervously.
“I told her about my suspicions that I was gay and asked if I could run an experiment to see if I felt anything when I kissed her,” Adrien explained, his cheeks colouring in shame.
“He told me that if there were any girl he could come to have feelings for, it would be me,” Marinette snickered, shaking her head. “The silver-tongued snake.”
Luka whistled, shooting Adrien an incredulous expression. “It sounds like my little prince was quite the cad as a youth.”
“Guilty,” Adrien groaned, covering his face with his hands. “I was confused, and I didn’t know who else to turn to. And I wholeheartedly believed what I said. I just didn’t realize yet that being gay wasn’t something you could ‘fix’ like my parents insisted, so… I’m sorry. I didn’t—”
“—Shh,” Nino interrupted, gently prying Adrien’s hands away from his face. “No one’s mad at you. Nette and I both enjoyed helping you out with your experiments. No harm done. We’re all just joking. Okay?”
Adrien looked from Marinette to Nino to Luka, and they each nodded.
Adrien blew out a slow breath, beginning to nod as well. “…Okay. Good. I just…still feel bad about that period when I was trying to figure myself out. I did some things I’m not proud of.”
“Shhh.” Nino pulled Adrien in closer for a hug as he called to the others, “You two get over here and snuggle too.”
Marinette tucked away her measuring tape and went at once to squeeze in on the sofa on Adrien’s opposite side, wrapping her arms around Adrien and Nino, assuring, “There’s nothing to feel bad about. No one’s hurt. Nothing’s broken.”
Luka came up along the back side of the couch and leaned over to nuzzle Adrien’s hair. “Listen to your friends, My Love. They’ve already forgiven whatever needed to be forgiven.”
“Thanks, guys,” Adrien whispered, letting go of his worries.
They remained in their cuddle pile in comfortable, warm silence for nearly a full minute before Marinette spoke.
“Wanna hear a secret?”
“What secret?” Adrien responded curiously.
“I’m seeing someone,” Marinette confessed tentatively, a giddy excitement bubbling just under the surface.
“Ah. Her imaginary boyfriend,” Nino snickered. “You’ve been on about him for years, Nette. Does mystery boy finally have a name or something?”
“Be nice,” Adrien chastened, giving Nino a light smack on the arm before turning his attention back to Marinette. “Is this the same guy you’ve mentioned before? Your mysterious nobleman?”
Marinette nodded shyly, taking a breath before announcing, “Her name is Kagami.”
Nino and Adrien’s jaws dropped.
Luka arched an eyebrow. “Is this the same Kagami that Adrien fences with?”
Marinette smiled nervously and nodded. “Yep. We’ve been together officially for three years now.”
“Holy crap,” Nino finally got out. “Nette, how the hell did you keep this a secret this long?”
Marinette shrugged. “People really aren’t as suspicious of two women spending a lot of time alone together as they would be a man and a woman. We used the pretext of me making clothes for her a lot in order to meet.”
Adrien blinked, still stunned at this revelation. “Wow…that’s…I’m really happy that you’ve found someone. That both you and Kagami are happy. I mean, besides my mothers, there’re no women I esteem higher than you two.”
“Thank you,” Marinette breathed in relief, feeling lighter now that she had the secret off of her chest.
Adrien bit his lip. “I just wish you had mentioned… I never suspected that you… Why did you never say anything? When I was busy lamenting my cursed fate to be alone and not know love my entire life, you could have said something,” he pressed, unable to hide the twinge of hurt in his voice.
Marinette shook her head. “I’m like Nino. I can be happy with a man or a woman, so no one ever had to know I wasn’t quote-unquote ‘normal’. My situation wasn’t like yours, so I didn’t feel I had any business making things about me when you were hurting so deeply.”
Adrien studied his friend intently for a long moment before sighing and resting his head on her shoulder. “…You still should have said something.”
She looked back and forth between Nino and Adrien before bowing her head, suitably chastened. “You’re right. I should have said something. There was never a good time, though, and then it felt like I couldn’t say anything because I’d waited too long.”
“Well, at least you’re telling us now,” Nino reasoned, giving Marinette’s arm a supportive pat. “Congrats. We’re happy for you.”
“I’m going to have to get to know Kagami better now,” Adrien hummed thoughtfully. “I thought I knew her, but I was obviously wrong.”
“She definitely has layers,” Marinette giggled.
Adrien tipped his head back and looked at Luka, still standing behind the sofa. “You’re not feeling left out, are you? I feel like we’re being exclusive.”
“You’re fine, My Love,” Luka chuckled, giving Adrien’s hair a loving pet. “I’m enjoying getting to see you with your friends. You know I’m an introvert and don’t necessarily need to be the center of the conversation.”
“Just let us know if we’re being too in-group-y,” Nino urged, giving Luka an amicable grin. “You’re family now, and we want you to feel welcome and comfortable with us.”
“What he said,” Marinette seconded.
“Thank you,” Luka replied earnestly, making his way over to the armchair closest to the fireplace. “But I promise you that I’m very low maintenance. Please continue your conversation. I don’t need to be included in everything so long as I eventually get my husband back from you to cuddle with him myself.”
“Cool,” Nino chuckled. “We can definitely agree to those terms.”
Silent snuggling continued for a few minutes until Marinette spoke up once more.
“Adrien, did I hear right? Did you make a royal decree legalizing same-sex marriage?” she inquired, holding her breath in anticipation.
“Uh…yeah. Yeah, Nathalie took care of that earlier. She said that people would start announcing it right away, so the news should be getting out by now,” he confirmed.
Marinette gave a trill of joy. “I’m going to ask Kagami to marry me.”
“Dude, wait,” Nino insisted. “We haven’t even vetted her yet.”
Adrien elbowed Nino in the stomach. “That’s awesome, Marinette. You’ll have to let me know when the wedding will be so I can come back for the ceremony.”
Nino and Marinette blinked in tandem and then shared a look.
“Wait. What do you mean ‘come back’?” Nino asked slowly, a feeling of dread knotting the pit of his stomach. “Aren’t you…like…already back?”
Adrien winced.
Marinette’s joyful expression abruptly diminished as her forehead furrowed. “You’re not staying here, are you?”
Adrien shook his head.
“You’re going back to the forest,” Nino whispered as understanding dawned upon him.
Adrien nodded.
There was a heavy moment of silence.
“…How long do we have?” Marinette inquired, voice sounding brittle as she tried to mask her sadness and pain at the thought of losing her closest friend all over again. “How long before you go back?”
“I don’t know,” Adrien confessed. “Not long. I only returned because I feared that the kingdom would descend into chaos and dictatorship in my absence after my father’s sudden passing. I’ll stay until I see a peaceful transfer of power and feel confident that my people will be okay without me.”
“It sounds like we’ve still got some time, then,” Nino remarked, trying to be optimistic. “We should…We should make the most of it, yeah?”
“Yeah,” Marinette whispered, snuggling in closer to Adrien.
“Yeah,” Adrien agreed, squeezing his friends tighter.

Ain’t Nothing But A Hound Dog || Kaden & Effie
TIMING: Shortly after Effie got Loker, her Basset Hound.
PARTIES: @chasseurdeloup & @effieduan
SUMMARY: Effie thinks the dog is going to eat her. Kaden thinks the dog is a monster. Truth is, he ain’t nothing but a hound dog
CONTENT: No Triggers!
“Nice doggy!” The hound bared his fangs at her, tail thumping against the ground with a hungry look on his face. It was like the tree situation, except she had managed to cram herself up onto her kitchen counter, staring warily down at the old basset hound. He was looking at her, every once in a while he would bark loudly at her. He wanted to eat her. She knew he wanted to eat her. The look in his eyes said all he wanted to eat for dinner that night was fox despite the multiple bags of kibble laying next to her island. Dog toys and multiple dog beds were strewn around the otherwise neat apartment -- Effie wasn’t planning on keeping the dog, really. She just didn’t want him to be uncomfortable during his stay. The dog barked as she gingerly tried swinging a leg over the counter, and she let out a shriek. Thank god she had the foresight to unplug everything in the apartment. “Nice! Doggy!”
Kaden came prepared, armed to the teeth. He had no idea what sort of canine creature would be waiting on the other side, but he was ready for anything. Hellhound, hedgehound, bonedoggle, aufhocker, barghest, cu-sith, dip, he had weapons for all of them. Could be anything. Probably not a raiju, squonk, or god forbid, a pricolici, but he was ready for any one of those all the same. Kaden knocked on the door. “Hello? Animal Control.” No response. Just a bark. And some yelling. He considered pounding on the door, but there was no time; there was no telling what was just beyond the threshold. She shrieked and he figured she’d forgive his intrusion later and Kaden threw himself into the door, shoulder first, ripping it off the hinges. His knife in hand, he sprinted to the source of the sound. “Hold on, I’m almost there! Stay calm!” shouted out as he ran towards the monster, ready to attack the second he saw whatever was waiting for him.
Animal Control. The dog was barking now, running in circles below her, absolutely bellowing his head off hearing someone at the door, and Effie shrieked again. What was that? Its call to arms?! Everything she ever knew about animals was rapidly leaving her head as pure terror replaced it, and she clung to her refrigerator, hardly even registering her door being kicked in. The dog lurched towards the intruder, and Effie yelled. “Wait! No!!” She wasn’t sure if it was to the dog or the man that came charging into her apartment, knife at the ready. The dog was jumping up onto the man’s knees, all stubby legs, floppy ears, tongue lolling out his mouth with loud deep barks coming from him. The familiar growl Effie had been hearing all morning -- or, well, since the dog had taken up residence in her home -- was coming from the back of his throat in between growls, his front paws tapping up onto the man’s legs as he jumped once, twice, three times…. But he wasn’t trying to rip the man’s kneecaps off. Or eat him. Or… well, do anything other than slobber on him. Effie froze, confusion flooding her face as she leaned forward to get a better look. “Wha -” She slipped, flailing down to the tile of her kitchen with a sharp smack. The dog barked, hopping down from the man, and immediately ran towards Effie -- Fear came back. That dog definitely has lunch on the mind! Her thoughts told her and she shrieked again, immediately driving back up for her safe spot on the counter, the dog nipping playfully at her heels.
Rounding the corner, Kaden scanned the area, looking for the monster in question. Which was it? What was he facing? Was the knife or the gun a better op--
Kaden stopped dead in his tracks, standing there, blinking in the kitchen as he saw a dog. Just a dog. “Putain de merde,” he started, letting loose a few more strings of curse words in French before letting out a deep sigh. The dog barked again at Effie before trotting over to him. “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” It was a hound dog. Nothing but a fucking hound dog. And it was howling. Kaden raised his hand out of the way as fast as he could, trying to keep the knife from getting near the animal. This was absolutely not what he expected to see. He was about to give him a pat when there was a crash to the floor. “Putain, are you alright?” With a sigh, Kaden sheathed the knife. “This what you called me about?” He walked over and crouched by the dog and held out his hand for him to sniff. “He looks pretty friendly to me. How’d he get here?” For a split second, he wondered if this was an illusion. If this was a kelpie or a hellhound that had been glamoured. His brow furrowed and he tried to listen to his hunter senses, see if anything pinged. A small chill ran down his spine. Merde.
“He was going to eat me!!” Effie insisted, pointing at the dog. The dog, however, just ran back to sit under the counter where she took refuge, sitting his butt down happily as his tail thumped against the floor, tongue lolling out his mouth. Effie pressed her lips together, staring down at the dog in exasperation. “At least… I thought… he was going to eat me,” Effie muttered, feeling heat rush to her face as she realized once again how silly she was being. Still, though, she didn’t get down off the counter. Instead, she pulled her legs up, crossing them. “I - Look. I’m not really a dog person -- I mean, I had one growing up --” Effie pointed at the single family photo she had. Five little girls, one separated from the rest wearing rubber gloves, and a big yellow golden retriever. “But Noodle was different and he’s…” Effie looked down at the dog again, and as if in response, he cocked his head at her. “... Not going to eat me,” she resigned. He barked as if he was agreeing with her.  “I’m sorry. He -- well, he chased me up a tree in the common, and some lady helped me down. And then I thought he just went away, but I got back to my car and I swear I only left the driver’s side door open for a second, so I could put my bag in the trunk and there he was in the passenger seat! And everytime I tried to get him down he just…. Did the growly thing at me. So I drove home and then he got out once we got home, and I parked and I figured that was the end of it… until I unlocked the door to my shop and he ran in. He’s not chipped, and no one responded to the LOST posters I posted in town and online, and I don’t want him to go to the pound or a shelter because he’s old. Old dogs don’t -- well, you know.” The dog barked again, and Effie jumped, looking away from Kaden and down at the dog. “What?! You are old!” More barking.
All Kaden could do was furrow his brow and blink, eyes darting between the dog and her. Then back again. Something wasn’t adding up. Scratch that, a lot of things weren’t adding up. And the more she talked, the less sense it made. “So. You’re scared of the dog. And brought it home anyway. And decided now was the time to call animal control?” Kaden wiped his face and sighed. It was so tempting to let his guard down. But the ping was there. That little sneaking sense of danger nearby. A monster. But this dog seemed completely normal. Then again, looks could be deceiving. Werewolves looked like humans most of the time, after all. “What made you think he was going to eat you? Did he ever look different? Or just like this?” The dog grumbled like it was tired of being told it was vicious when he just wanted some love. Kaden held his hand out again and the dog sniffed and snuffed before waddling over for pets, leaning into the hunter’s leg as he rubbed the critter’s side. There was no more ping, no more danger when touching the potential monster. Not like with Wrinkles way back when. This dog was… just a dog. Kaden went to stand up and the dog howled a little. “What?” Kaden asked, a smile breaking out on his face as he looked down. “What do you want?” The dog leapt up onto his knee, clearly not done with pets. Goofy grin plastered all over his face, Kaden reached down and scooped up the dog and started giving him more scritches and scratches, cooing a little at the old guy. “Look at you, you’re just a good boy. You are. Anyone would be lucky to have you, right? Yes.” Kaden nearly forgot that he wasn’t alone, that Effie was curled up, away from the dog. He coughed, cleared his throat, tried to find whatever professional dignity he might have left to find. “You want to pet him? He’s not going to eat you.” He finally noticed the gloves she was wearing. “Maybe without those. I mean, if you want. Up to you.”
“I told you I thought he was going to eat me,” Effie mumbled, still embarrassed by this whole situation. She looked up at him, about to ask why the dog would ever look different before she remembered that the poor animal control workers in this town probably saw more bullshit than anyone else. She deflated slightly. Maybe this would give him an actual break. “No, he always looked like that. I just -- I’m scared of hound dogs. I’m sorry.” She watched as the grumpy french man’s facade melted away and he scooped up all 65 pounds of basset hound off the ground, cooing and cuddling him. The surprise hit her first, and then the amusement. Under that lay something ugly. She was envious of his freedom to play with her dog. She could never do that, not without fear of frying his skin or worse. Effie sat on her counter watching with envious amusement until he seemed to realize that she was watching him. “Without the --” Effie looked down at her gloved hands, before looking at the dog apprehensively. “I’m having a bad hand day,” she said quietly. It wasn’t a lie, of course, she couldn’t tell them. It was just that every day was a bad hand day. Effie quietly pushed herself off the counter, this time landing on her feet as she cautiously approached. Slowly, very slowly, she reached out and patted the dog on the head.
Kaden shook his head and supposed he had to accept that this was just an over reaction. Unless… This was White Crest, after all. Maybe she had seen something real. Or maybe a phobid had enhanced her fear. Who knew. He could hear her heartbeat slowing ever slightly. It was still pounding pretty hard, she was clearly very nervous. Not that her words told him any different. “It’s alright. He’s not going to try and eat you. Pro--” Kaden shut his mouth so fast he nearly bit his tongue. How that word still crept into his vocabulary even now, he didn’t know. “Just trust me, he just wants some love. And I’ve got him so if anything happens, you’ll be okay. Alright?” Kaden wasn’t a very patient man at times, but something about working with animals made it all so much easier to just wait, breathe a moment, and take things a little slower. And it was clear she was trying. If she was going to keep this dog, she was going to have to get used to basic things. Like petting him. So patience it was. “Alright then, suit yourself,” he said and gave her a nod to come closer. Her hand reached out and touched the pup and immediately he tried to wriggle out of Kaden’s grasp, likely to lick Effie’s face. The hunter held tight and kept the dog from getting loose. “Easy there,” he said, keeping the canine steady. “Both of you need to take it slow, got it?” He gave the dog a stern look and in response, the hound looked up and licked Kaden’s nose instead. “Wonderful.” And his hands were full. Oh well. Guess dog slobber it was.
Embarrassment clung to her as Effie watched Kaden coax her to pet the dog. It was so… ridiculous. Was this what her life was? Being terrified of every living thing that came into her house? She pat the dog anyway, though, and he seemed not to mind how strange her hands felt with her gloves on. “Oh!” Effie pulled her hand back in surprise just as the dog licked Kaden’s nose. She froze, feeling the laugh building in her before she could stop it, and a second later she was covering her mouth to conceal the snickering. “Sorry, sorry.” The dog wiggled in his arms and looked down at him, a small smile spreading across her face. “I’m sorry I thought you were going to eat me,” she said to the dog, gently reaching out to pat the dog on the head again if only so he would stop licking Kaden’s face. He went to licking her gloves and rubbing his floppy eared head against her hand instead. She glanced up at Kaden too, her smile turning sheepish. “And for, um, making you kick my door in.”

Aes Sídhe (Finan x Reader) Part 1
This is my first time writing for The Last Kingdom fandom! I have adored the show since it came out but have always been too nervous to try and write for it. This idea came to mind though and would not leave me alone...so here it is.
Can be read as reader or OFC since there is no real description given.
I want to thank @geekandbooknerd and @medievalfangirl for your own amazing Finan writings. I am slightly embarrassed how many times I have gone back and reread them.
In regards to the title: from my understanding (granted I could be very wrong), an aes sídhe is an Irish term for a supernatural race in Irish and Scottish mythology, similar to fairies and elves.
Warnings: None
Words:2k
PART 2
Tumblr media
Finan rose from his spot near the campfire. The sun had not yet set but Uhtred decided to make camp early. Not that Finan was complaining. They had been riding hard for days, heading back to Wintanceaster with news for King Alfred.
 "Where are you off to?"
Finan glanced over at Osferth, who was laying on his side across from the campfire. "I'm going to wash my hands."
"You'll need to wash more than your hands to not smell like a pig sty."
"Oi! What was that, baby monk?" Finan tossed his blanket at the lad, the others around the fire smiling. "Do not lament my absence too much!" He started walking towards the nearby creek, away from their campsite.
"What would we miss? Life is quieter without you."
 "I HEARD THAT, SIHTRIC!"
The sound of laughter followed the Irishman as he carefully made his way down the steep bank to the creek. Only a few paces of rocky sand separated the creek from the steep bank, which surrounded and kept the creek easily hidden. The last of the sunlight peeked through the trees all around. The forest was quiet, the only noises were the bubbling creek and the distant sound of those still around the campfire.
They had decided to camp above and some paces from the creek. It would have been impossible to maneuver the horses down the steep banks and being camped above allowed them to stand watch unencumbered. The only downfall was having to carry water up for the horses. Yet having watched Osferth douse himself when he tripped was worth it. The memory still made Finan chuckle.
Dropping down the last part of the steep bank, he moved to the edge of the creek. The small rocks and sand gave way under his boots. He splashed the cool water over his face and hands then took a moment to watch the droplets fall from his beard back into the creek. If the water had been deeper, he would have stripped down to fully cleanse himself. Alas, it was too shallow but even just cleaning what he could felt refreshing from the dust and sweat of the road.
With a sigh, he allowed the memories he venomously ignored to come forth. This place, the creek bed and the trees, the stillness and the sunlight...it reminded him of a favorite spot from his childhood. Where his brother and himself would sneak away to go looking for faerie mounds or kelpies, much to their mother's dismay. A lighter time. An easier time...before betrayal.
Harshly, he shoved the memories back and closed the lid on them. It did no good to think about them. He was here now. He was happy here. Uhtred was a brother he was bonded to and would readily give his life for. Sihtric and even Osferth were like younger brothers he looked out for. Clapa was a good friend. It was better he was here.
A soft plop in the water made him look up. He knew it was most likely an animal coming to drink or a rock sliding to cause the sound but long years of being a warrior and always on alert forced him to constantly be aware of his surroundings.
What he saw forcibly drew the breath from his lungs in a gasp.
A woman knelt on a large stone, several paces away and across the creek from him. With one hand dipped in the water making slow circles, she watched the ripples as if lost in thought. Her hair was draped over one shoulder, a yellow kingcup flower tucked behind her ear. With her face exposed, her ethereal beauty was on full display for him to bare witness to. There was nothing about her that would not cause the darkest envy in other women and the strongest lust in all men. She was beauty incarnate. A creature not of this world.
He was unable to remove his eyes, nor move or call out, spellbound to only her.
Suddenly she looked up and locked eyes with him. A noose around his neck would have had less of a binding hold on him. Her eyes both pierced and soothed his soul. Her very being a vision that summoned him as a man possessed. Yet he could not move nor break her enchantment. They stared at one another; eyes locked from across the creek.
Ever so slowly she stood up and it was only then he took into account what she was wearing. A thin, white shift covered her, but with the fading sunlight behind her, it was almost transparent. Her outline and curves caressed by the fabric, an enticement and illusion. Never had he witnessed a woman more perfect.
"Are...are you alright, my lady?" His words broke the spell, his tongue finally recalled how to function. But as soon as the words were released, he would have given anything to return them.
After one slow blink of those captivating eyes, she fled. Moving as silently and quickly as a shadow, she jumped off the rock and hurried away on the other side of the creek. Neither rocks nor sticks hindered her bare feet.
"Wait!" He cried out, stumbling over himself as he gave chase. He ran opposite of her, trying to keep her in his sights lest she vanish and he awaken from this dream.
She followed a bend in the creek, darting between two trees that stood sentry on the edge. Uncaring of his clothing, he darted across the creek, the water only reaching mid-calf.  When he crossed over and rounded the bend, desperate for a glimpse of her, only the tranquil sight of the forest and creek lay before him. His eyes scoured everywhere, trying to catch a glimpse of her. There were no footprints his trained eyes could see, no markings that anyone had passed by. He scratched the back of his neck as he turned around once again, hoping he had missed something.
Yet there was nothing. She had vanished.
With a reluctant sigh, he turned to head back to camp. He had been gone long enough the others would question him. A bright spot of color amongst the dull colors of the rocks caught his eye. Moving closer he found a small bush of the kingcup flowers. Gently he stroked one of the many flowers' petals, remembering how they looked in her hair. On a whim, he plucked three and walked back to the stone she had knelt on.
"For you, aes sídhe." He whispered laying them down reverently. The bright yellow stood out on the gray stone, like the sun shining through on a cloudy day.
Looking around him once more, he crossed the creek and headed back towards camp. The further he walked, the more he began to question what he saw. A pinch to the arm proved he was not dreaming. Could it have been some kind of vision? He doubted that. He was not holy enough nor had enough drink to induce one.
 "There he is!"
 "Thought you had finally drown."
Finan threw himself on the ground next to his pack, ignoring the teasing of Osferth and Sihtric. He rubbed a hand over his beard and stared at the sky as the first few stars appeared in the sky. He could not get the image of her out of his head. So beautiful and pure.
A tickling in his ear brought his attention back to the present. He swatted at his ear and looked over to discover Uhtred next to him, a long blade of grass in hand and hovering over his head.
 "What is bothering you?"
Finan sat up, his arms over his knees. "Aes sídhe."
 "What?"
"Nothin'. Thought I had seen somethin' at the water."
Uhtred's brows furrowed slightly, trying to decipher his friend's meaning. "Well while you think, you have first watch. We drew straws earlier and you lost." He slapped Finan on the back.
 "Sihtric rigged it."
"Lies!" Sihtric threw a clump of dirt at a chuckling Osferth. "It was Fate that chose."
"Why are you always throwing stuff at me?" Osferth whined, wiping the dirt mark off his robes.
 "You deserve it."
Uhtred spoke. "It would seem we need to work on your reflexes."
"Yes, lord." Osferth sighed, eyes downcast.
"Don't worry, baby monk, I know what will help. We will take turns throwing knives at you. Eventually you'll dodge them."
 Osferth groaned.
With a clap on Uhtred's shoulder, Finan got up to settle against a tree nearby that offered a better spot for watching the camp and its surroundings. In truth he did not mind being on first watch tonight. With memories of her, clinging to him like summer's heat, he knew sleep would elude him. He tried to push the thoughts of her aside but to no avail. In truth he doubted he would ever be able to forget her.
 ***
The next morning, a rough kick to his back woke him. He groaned, attempting to rub the sleep from his eyes as he sat up.
"I never thought you one for flowers, Finan." Sihtric said, walking to the other side of the camp.
 "What?"
Osferth piped up, head swiveling, looking from Finan to Sihtric. "Or perhaps it is from a special lady?"
"What lady is around here besides the horses?" Sihtric snorted.
 "Maybe it is a horse?"
"What are ya fools talkin' about?" Finan eyed the smirks on the faces of those around him. His mind refused to fully abandon the land of dreams. There had been something... something on the edge of his consciousness but he could not recall it now.
"Behind you." Uhtred nodded towards Finan's pack.
Unsure, he looked to his pack on his other side…and froze. The kingcup flowers lay next to where his head had just been, but this time, a thin white strip of fabric bound the flowers together. Hesitantly he reached out and touched the flowers then fabric, in awe when he could feel their texture beneath his fingers.
She was not a dream or vision.
Without warning he rose to his feet and scanned around him. He ignored the confused looks of his companions. Only on a second scan did he glimpse something. On further inspection, it was the slightest indent of footprints amongst the grasses. It was too small to be any of Uhtred's men. Plus, the blades were barely bent by whose feet stepped on them, they would have been easy to miss.
 "Finan?"
He realized he looked like a madman, first startled by flowers and searching for a sign around them. He stood up, arms crossed when he turned back. "Yes, lord?"
 "Something amiss?"
He wondered if he should tell them. Their camp had been infiltrated and no one knew it. Yet as he opened his mouth, the words died on his tongue.
"No, I just...it must have been a dream."
"If you say." The Dane-Slayer did not look like he fully believed his friend but would let it go this time. "We leave soon."
Ignoring those around him, he knelt in front of his pack. Memories of her, still so sharp even after sleep, came forth unaided. He gently touched the white strip of cloth, reminiscent of her thin shift. Had she torn the strip from it?  Before the others could notice, he stuck the flowers in his pack and the cloth up his arm-guard.
He looked one last time towards the creek. "Go dtí go mbuailfimid le chéile arís, mo aes sídhe." (Until we meet again, my aes sídhe.)
"WE RIDE!" Uhtred called then sent his horse into a canter, his men following him loyally.
Finan could not help one last glance over his shoulder. If he thought he caught a glimpse of a white shift and a form peeking out from between the trees, he could not prove it. He turned back to following the others. In his mind he prayed that this would not be the last time he saw her.

prompt:
Person A: “Why exactly is an ancient vampire following you around like a lost puppy.”
Person B: “....It’s a long story.”
It was Donghyuk’s fault that you were in this mess, you mused as you stared at your surroundings in the evil lair you were currently being kept in. It was somewhere near a body of water of course, because duh kelpie, and you were deep inside a cave that was full of moisture, moss and weird insects. The ground that you sat on was wet, cold and just overall uncomfortable especially because your wrists and ankles were bound with worn out, itchy rope. If Donghyuk hadn’t messed with that stupid kelpie (of all things a kelpie) you wouldn’t have been kidnapped. But oh no. Donghyuk just had to antagonize the guy didn’t he and because of that, you were his lunch.
Inwardly you cursed him, hoping he got a papercut in the near future.
You shifted your gaze from the wall to the to the figure laying awkwardly on your left. The brunet stranger looked extremely, in kinder words, worse for wear; sunken cheeks, skin paler than any you’ve ever seen combined with a willowy looking body. If this was your enemy’s first meal, no wonder he had grabbed you because the guy was barely a snack. There was no way the fiend would be satisfied. The other kidnapee was there before you and hadn’t made a move since you had arrived. In fact if you hadn’t inspected him for as long as you had, you definitely caught the micromovements of his chest as he breathed, then you would have presumed that he was already dead. Fortunately for you, he wasn’t.
The coven was probably working on tracking you but they sure were taking their sweet time and you were getting impatient–it had gotten just a bit darker and you hadn’t seen the kelpie since he threw you in the damn cave. A sigh that echoed loudly escaped your lips as you folded your legs so that they came up to your chest and slid your bound arms over them.
The kelpie was clearly a dumbass for not tying your arms behind your back. What, was he a newbie at kidnapping? Had he not watched any movies for references or something? Although you were thankful that for his rookie mistake because your toes were expertly working on the rope. There was something to be said about the kelpie’s skill when you could undo his work in under twenty minutes but you supposed that also meant that you were too used to being kidnapped.
Tossing the rope aside, you quickly undid the binding on your ankles and finally, finally, you could stand up and stretch.
With one last stretch, you made to leave. That was until you caught sight of the other victim through your peripheral vision. You glanced towards the dim light, just about able to make the shape of the entrance, and decided that if the kelpie were to burst in mid-escape that at least you would have died doing a good deed. Walking up to the stranger, you harshly poked his leg repeatedly. No dice. Your mouth twisted into a frown but you quickly undid the rope around his wrists and ankles. You tried waking him up again but nothing worked. Left with no other option, you grabbed one of his arms and pulled him up. It concerned you how easy it was but you made sure that you had a tight grip on him as you started making your way to the exit.
Getting back to your apartment was no easy feat; the extra weight meant that it took you double, or maybe even triple, the amount of time to walk back to your destination. Any other person would bring the unconscious man to a hospital but you thought it was best to avoid it since you didn’t want to answer any questions that they would have, especially considering that you didn’t even know him. Besides, Taeyong and Doyoung could just do their healing mumbo-jumbo so everything would be just fine.
Once you saw the beautiful sight of your door, you heaved a sigh of relief when you saw your friends surrounding it. Jungwoo was the first to spot you and immediately rushed over to help you carry the man while the others opened the door quickly gathered inside.
“We should get him in the shower,” you said. You hadn’t grown accustomed to the stench that he emitted the entire way back. “While we do that, Taeyong and Doyoung, could you check if there’s anything wrong with him please?” They hummed an affirmative and you smiled gratefully at them as you and Jungwoo, with the help of Johnny and Jaehyun, placed the unconcious brunet inside the tub and turned on the water.
“You should get in too, y/n, you reek!”
In a flash you glared at Donghyuk. “Oh yeah? And who’s fault is that, exactly?”
“Okay, okay. I shouldn’t have kept pranking him but the guy just made it so easy! And I didn’t know he was a supernatural!”
“I miss Sicheng,” you said with an exaggerated sigh as you stepped into the tub as well, your feet on either side of the man’s legs. “At least he would’ve been able to smell that it was a kelpie.” Your werewolf friend was trying to recruit a pack down south to be the supernatural counterpart of your coven and unfortunately wouldn’t be back for three or four months, which was a total bummer because it meant that your Swimming Sundays were on hold. You would go on your own but it felt like you were betraying him and the one time you did try, it was too lonely without him.
“I’m sorry.” Donghyuk pouted at you as you scrubbed shampoo into the stranger’s hair, taking extra time to massage his scalp. You had to repeat it numerous time to get all the dirt out.
“I’ll forgive you if you buy me and this guy dinner tonight.”
“Deal.”
“Okay we’re good.”
Taeil snorted. “You two are idiots.”
After the both of you had showered and Yuta magicked some clothes for the guy, you allowed the others to lay him on your bed as you got changed in the bathroom. You were pretty concerned for the guy because he was super malleable while you gave him a bath, not even a twitch or anything.
“Are you sure nothing’s wrong with him?” You asked the two healing type witches, your forehead creased due to your furrowed brows, to which they shook their heads.
“His body is building up some strength so he’ll probably wake up on his own at some point.” Doyoung replied as he eyed the figure on your bed curiously, his head tilted.
You hummed. “Alrighty then.” You spun around to face Donghyuk who was leaning on your door frame, “time for food!” You chirped.
As the day stretched into night, your friends started leaving one by one but not before charging up the protective wards that they wove around concealed areas of your apartment, bidding you goodbyes with sweet smiles as they made you promise to call them if anything was wrong.
After taking care of your night routine, you stood at the edge of your bed with your arms folded, debating on whether or not you wanted to hop into bed with a complete stranger. Sure, he looked harmless with his boyish features but everyone was harmless when they were asleep. After a few more minutes of standing there like an absolute moron, you decided that you would bite the bullet and just get into bed. It was yours after all and you reasoned with yourself that there was no way this guy would do anything to you since you literally sheltered him. With that in mind, you closed your eyes and drifted off to some well deserved sleep.
*
You woke up to a face hovering directly above yours and immediately screamed, causing the figure to scramble away from you in a panic. You backed up against the headboard as you kept your eyes on him which started a staring competition. As soon as you felt your eyes drying up, you blinked as you shook your head however you could still his gaze boring into you.
“Sorry for screaming at you,” you apologized as you began to get off of your bed, “I completely forgot that you were here. Honestly though, I thought you were dead but I’m glad you aren’t.” He said nothing, just watched as you fixed your duvet and fluffed your pillows. “My name’s y/n, by the way, just in case you were wondering. I got you out of that nasty kelpie cave because, hello, I couldn’t just leave you there knowing that you were alive. Do you know what that would do to my conscious?” Again, he said nothing, just trailed behind you as you walked into the kitchen. “Well, anyways, you aren’t, like, a vegan right? ‘Cause I really want scrambled eggs.”
“What’s a vegan?” Came the hoarse voice of your guest just as you took four eggs from the fridge. You decided to pour him a glass of water while explaining to him what a vegan was, somewhat confused that he wasn’t aware of what it was, and found yourself smiling amusedly as he downed it in one go. “No, ‘m not a vegan.”
“Awesome! Hey, what’s your name by the way?”
“Mark.”
As you began to work on your eggs, you started rambling to fill up the silence because your guest didn’t seem too chatty at the moment, which you totally understood.
“Well it’s nice to meet you Mark! I wish we could have met under different circumstances, but oh well nothing we can do now. Actually I’m sorta glad that I got kidnapped ‘cause then I got to help you get out of there, like, you looked so rough. It was pretty terrible.”
Mark cleared his throat. “Thank you, uh, for saving me.” He mumbled, “anyone else would have just left me there.”
Tutting in response at the thought while you plated up the food, you responded with, “you’re absolute right there. People can be such assholes. I remember another time I was kidnapped and tried to help this girl and she totally was unappreciative, which, like, sis you clearly aren’t. People are just too prideful.”
You startled slightly when you spun around, one plate in each hand, as you caught Mark staring at you intensely with his innocent, wide eyes. He immediately jumped up from his high seat on the other side of the counter and grabbed the plates from you, briskly placing them on the table and pulled out a chair on one side immediately afterwards. He looked at you expectantly as you slowly made your way to the seat, smiling at him in thanks.
“Yeah,” Mark agreed as he sat on the seat across from you. You dug into your food, relishing the taste. There was nothing like a scrambled eggs in the morning, you should have toasted some bread as well. “But they probably wouldn’t have helped, y’know, since I’m a vampire and all.” That had you choking on your food.
“Geez, give a little warning before you drop something like that!” A vampire. Of course he was a vampire. Nothing in your life was ever easy, it seemed. Whatever. You could totally roll with the punches because there was no way you could leave this guy to fend for himself, he just looked too innocent–vampire or not. You were curious about his kind anyway, since your coven hadn’t had any run-ins with them. In fact vampires were among the rarer supernaturals to spot because they preferred to stay hidden from society which was something you could totally get behind. Sometimes society sucked.
“Sorry, y/n! Are you alright?” His brows creased, tone colored in concern.
“Yep! All good! Just, you know, a little surprised is all.”
Mark’s expression shifted into one that was a mix of curiosity and anxiousness. “You didn’t know?” He asked quietly, seeming to melt into his chair.
“Uh, no? But listen, it’s totally cool with me! Promise.” You examined him once again; he definitely looked better after drinking that glass of water and eating his portion of eggs. He finished them pretty quickly, so he was clearly famished. You racked your brain to think of what food you had readily available when a thought occurred to you. “You-” you paused, slightly nervous, “you need blood don’t you?”
Without meeting your eyes, he nodded. At that point you already knew what you had to do. Sure, the thought made you a little bit queasy but Mark? Mark looked so dejected, as if he thought you were repulsed by him. Which, hello, it wasn’t like it was 1932 where people still condemned the supernatural. People were generally much more accepting these days. Maybe where he used to live wasn’t? You frowned at the thought.
“You can feed from me.” Mark’s head snapped up as quick as lightning, opening his mouth but you gave him no room to refuse your offer. “Clearly, you need it. And if it’s something that I can give to you that can help you then I will. You need the strength, anyways. I’m sure you’ll get some color back as well, cause there’s no way vampires are like those stereotypes, right?”
Mark looked unsure. “What if I’m a bad guy?”
You snorted. “That’s highly unlikely. I’m part of a coven, well, I’m not a witch or anything, more like their human moral support system. But anyways, my friends have warded my house so no harm can come to me, so if you were a bad guy you wouldn’t have been allowed in in the first place.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, oh, now how do you want me?”
Mark seemed flustered by the question, which was completely adorable, but answered the question anyways. As you gave him your wrist, he said, “you know, you shouldn’t just go around offering blood to vampires.”
You waved a hand nonchalantly at him, “I appreciate your concern Mark, really, I do. But,” you made sure to look him directly in the eye so that he wouldn’t mistake your words for anything else but sincerity, “I trust you.” He was clearly taken back by your statement, his doe eyes making an appearance once again. “What? Don’t look so surprised. You’ve had plenty of opportunity to maim me or whatever but you haven’t.”
“Yeah because I’m not a monster.”
“Exactly! Now, get on with it, please, before I really start to freak out.”
Mark obliged. It wasn’t as bad as you thought it was, the puncture just felt like a little pinprick which was totally manageable. You could tell that he was being gentle by the way he was holding your arm with the smallest amount of pressure and the way he took little breaks in between. Once he had taken his fill, he surprised you by licking the area but you figured that it was regular vampire behaviour.
“Thank you.” Mark said as he released your arm.
You smiled at him and you were brilliantly surprised when he returned one of his own. “No problem!”
*
Almost a week had passed and Mark was still staying with you. The two of you had a routine by that point; eat, let him feed from you and then do whatever you wanted until he needed to feed again, which was about an additional two or three times. It was honestly kind of scary how easily he slotted himself into your life, however, you found that you didn’t mind. You liked his company. Ever since you had let him feed from you the first time around he was quick to warm up to you and it was quite endearing to see him do cute things to please you.
You were currently playing a game of Guess Who when your phone rang. You scrunched your nose, smiling at him apologetically before picking up the call.
“She’s alive you guys!” Johnny’s voice bellowed in your ear.
“Well hello to you to Johnny boy.” He laughed good naturedly at your nickname for him. “And, rude, Of course I’m alive!”
“We haven’t seen you since forever ago, y/n! Do you not like us anymore?” Doyoung whined, dramatic as always.
“Is it because of Donghyuck? ‘Cause I’ll get rid of him if you want.” Yuta offered which was followed by a ‘hey!’ by none other than Donghyuk himself, causing you to giggle.
“Sorry, I’ve just been spending some time with Mark.” You explained as you met the vampire’s gaze, who smiled goofily at you when you did. You couldn’t suppress the smile that made its own way onto your face.
“Is that the guy you saved?” Jungwoo asked you and you hummed an affirmative. “Okay. Is it alright if we go there and formally introduce ourselves then?”
You heard Yuta mutter something suspiciously like, ‘yeah and threaten him.’ But you said nothing. “Sure,” you replied to Jungwoo, “see you here in half an hour?”
“Perfect!” And with that, he hung up.
“Looks like we’ve got some cleaning to do.” The apartment wasn’t particularly messy but because it could get pretty rowdy with a group of boys, you always moved the more vulnerable items just in case anything were to happen to them. Mark trailed you, copying whatever you did and glanced at you for your approval.
Within no time at all, the boys had finally arrived, barging in like they owned the place as they usually did. They greeted you one by one before turning to Mark, who had taken comfort in pressing into your side the minute everyone else stepped in and started shooting laser beams at him with their eyes. It was Taeyong who started asking Mark various questions before he deemed the man safe enough to have around. All of them got along like a house on fire and it warmed your heart to see the coven accepting him easily like you did. They even invited him to movie night, which was great since you were going to anyway even if they didn’t because you didn’t want him to be left alone.
“They’re very nice.” Mark stated as you closed the door on your last guest. “Very kind and friendly, just like you.”
You beamed at him, “you really think so?”
Mark nodded as he grabbed your hand, ready to lead you to bed just as he has been doing for the past week. “Yeah, I really like them.”
Pleased with his answer, you swung your interlocked fingers wildly in the air and began humming happily.
*
Three months later, Mark was still staying in your apartment. Nothing much changed in your dynamic other than you two getting closer to each other. You knew a lot stuff about him at that point like how he loved the smell of coffee but hated the taste of it, that he loved eating watermelons and tried feeding from deer because he saw it in Twilight. You knew what made him laugh, smile and what little things irritated him. You even knew what he looked like when he was mad, all because of that time he and Donghyuk got into an argument so bad that they refused to talk to each other for about a month and a half. Nobody spoke about That Incident anymore but sometimes you noticed that the others were prepared just in case anything escalated to that level.
Mark seemed to be attached to you, actually, trailing you like a little duckling at all times. You sure were lucky that you worked in the magic shop that the coven owned because there was no way any other work places would have tolerated how he barely strayed a few meters behind you, unless either of you needed to go to the bathroom. The other boys ribbed you about it, teasing about how he must have imprinted on you exactly like a baby duck would their mother but you just rolled your eyes and shoved whatever warmth you felt down into the depths of your mind. There was absolutely no way you were going to expose the massive crush you had developed on Mark because they would never let you live it down. Especially Jaehyun and Donghyuk.
“Have you ever thought about moving out?” You asked Mark out of the blue as you cooked dinner for the two of you. You were curious because any other person would have moved on already and yet there you were, three months after the kidnapping and he hadn’t gone away.
You imagined that he was wearing his confused facial expression, the one where his head would tilt to the side slightly, eyes squinted as he said, “no, why?”
“Just wondering.” You replied with a shrug.
“Do you want me to move out?”
You pretended to think about it. Sneaking a look at his face, you weren’t entirely surprised to find him just a feet or two away from you. The vampire was staring you with those cute wide eyes that you couldn’t resist, eyebrows raised in horror. You rolled your eyes fondly at him and lightly petted his cheek. In turn he placed his hand over yours and leaned into your touch, closing his eyes. You studied him for a moment, soaking in how at peace he looked before turning your attention back to your one pot pasta–your hand being held hostage as you willed your heartbeat to calm itself down a notch, fully aware that he could hear the strong uptick of your heartbeat.
“No,” you replied as you turned off the stove, turning to face him. “You can stay as long as you like.” You said simply, losing yourself in his eyes.
Mark slowly lowered your hand from his cheek, averting his eyes away from yours, fiddling with your fingers in his. “And,” he licked his lips, “if I asked to stay forever?”
Heart pounding vehemently in your ears, you cleared your throat. “I’d say: of course you can.” You inhaled sharply as he slowly started crowding into your personal space, nervousness filling his eyes which were mapping your face like they always did.
“What if I asked for more?” He whispered shakily, raising a hand to caress you cheek.
“Like what?” You could hardly breathe with the way he was looking at you; like you were the answer he was looking for all this time, like you were everything he’d ever wanted.
“You know what,” you did. Of course you did. It was clear in his eyes what he wanted however you said nothing, waiting for him to continue. “I want everything.” He answered truthfully, “everything that you’re willing to give me. Anything I can get.”
Part of you wanted to say a joke. Say something stupid like, ‘that desperate for me, are you’ or, ‘I didn’t know you wanted me that badly’ but you refrained yourself from doing so. You knew how much courage it took for him, could see how anxious he was, because it probably wasn’t easy for him to do this.
“And if it’s my heart?”
Mark leaned in closer to you, his face a few inches from your own. “I promise I’ll take care of it.” And with that he gently pressed his lips onto yours, kissing you slow and sweet. Your hands found themselves around his neck and you could feel him smile into the kiss.
When you pulled away to catch your breath, his smile rivaled the sun with how bright and warm it was. It made butterflies erupt in your stomach and there was nothing you could do but return it.
“I trust you.” You told him giddily, like it was a secret that only the two of you knew.
With a boyish smile, he said, “I trust you too.” Then followed the statement up with another kiss.
*
It was Sicheng’s welcome back party and your boyfriend hadn’t once let go of your hand since Taeyong informed the coven that the pack that Sicheng successfully recruited would be joining. The other witches snickered as Mark wandered around with you as you greeted everyone and chatted with a few people here and there, hand attached to your own as it always was.
Eventually Sicheng couldn’t contain himself anymore and gestured you over with an incline of his head. Once you reached him, Mark in tow right behind you, he immediately asked, “why exactly is an ancient vampire following you around like a lost puppy.” You snorted, of course Sicheng and his super senses would figure out what your boyfriend was.
You dragged Mark to stand beside you, flashing him an adoring smile before replying to your friend. “It’s a long story.”
Sicheng muttered, ‘only you’ but you chose to ignore him in favor of staring at your boyfriend tenderly as he kissed your hand, returning your stare. You figured that you should thank Donghyuk for getting you into that mess because if it weren’t for him you wouldn’t have met one of the most loveliest people on earth.

FFXIVWrite2020 Writing Challenge-Day 10
@sea-wolf-coast-to-coast @ffxiv-writers
Prompt-Avail
So this has been inspired by the seventh story in Tales from the Shadows.  So placed beneath the cut for 5.3 spoilers and spoilers for said story.  This is about my WoL Aina as an the Amarotine Elpis (Greek Spirit of Hope.  Fitting imo for the WoL)
Grapes
Tumblr media
Elpis strode into the Bureau of the Architect heading strait for the secretary that took business for the chief.
As she approached the woman straightened and gave a welcome smile, "What brings you here today Azem?"
"Could I have a word with the Chief please." she responded hiding her annoyance at the woman using her title instead of her given name.  Elpis knew it came with taking the seat but it was tiring how many called her that despite of her insistence otherwise.
The woman got up and disappeared for a moment heading to where Elpis knew was Hythlodaeus's office.
It took but a span of a breath before the woman returned and led Elpis to him.
"Elpis, " he said cheerfully, "Which world shattering concept do you need this time?"
The woman gave him a huge smile, of course he'd remember her preference for address.  She then sobered and said, "Ifrita"
She knew behind his mask Hyth's eyes widened in surprise, "Lahabrea's masterwork....what...."
Elpis removed her mask letting him see her concerned features, "There is an isolated island that is having unusual aetheric activity and an eruption of its volcano is eminent.  I plan to use Ifrita to prevent it."
Hyth touched his chin for a moment contemplating before asking, "Can I ask why?  Incidents like that are a part of the nature of the star...."
"Because some of the islanders would rather it didn't happen and they lose their life’s work to the whims of nature.  There is but one crop on the island an unusual variety of grapes unlike any other and it is the only place they grow.  The villagers have literally cultivated them their entire life to obtain a very rare and tasty variety."  she explained.
He grinned, "Well then of course you can avail yourself to Ifrita.  After all the concepts within these walls are intended for the benefit of this star and its people."
She replaced her mask and gave him a grateful smile, "Thank you Hyth, I'll also need one of my own concepts....one strong enough to defeat Ifrita once it aborbs all of the excess aether."
Hyth nodded then snapped his fingers, "I know just the one, oh and your most current concept has been approved.  I dare say it should aid you in travel  though I still have my doubts on its flight capability."
She gave him an impish grin stating, "Oh it can fly despite its appearances."
Hyth shrugged then motioned for her to follow as the both of them entered the restricted section of the Bureau.  Moments later she exited the building with three of the concept containment crystals in hand.  Two much larger than the other and radiating their respective aethers.
Just before she left he called, "Do bring some of those grapes back with you upon your return. I'd like to give them a try and some for Hades too."
She gave him a laugh and nodded, "Aye, I will for otherwise he'd never let us hear the end of it right."
Elpis knew Hades would probably have some choice words with them anyway when this was all said and done.  Sometimes the man was too dour for his own good.
Once outside she focused on the smaller crystal calling forth the concept inscribed within.  In a burst of aether a avian shaped magic appeared.
It was taller than her and stood on a pair of three toed feet at the end of long powerful legs.  Yellow feathers coated its entire body and set of stubby wings graced its flanks. The concept had a beak that took up most of its head.  Chocolate colored eyes stared at her and deep down she wished that it could be a living being instead of a simple spell if it was she imagined the eye would be warm and expressive.  On its back was a saddle that held multiple bags which she put each of the other crystals on opposite sides of its flanks.
As she swung astride it she heard, "Azem?"
Turning she saw Elidibus the boy looking at her and the new concept a curious look in his eyes, "Off on another journey I presume and with such an unusual mount....."
She gave the young man a smile and nodded, "Concept of my own design actually.  Just got final approval.  And yes, I am off to save that island from its destruction."
Elidibus's eyes widened in shock and he blurted without thinking, "How?"
"I plan on using Ifrita to syphon away the excess aether and disperse it harmlessly elsewhere sparing the island."
"Why?" the young man asked curious
"Because the grapes grown on that isle are particularly delicious." she responded distractedly her mind swirling with plans and estimations.
Swinging into the saddle she added, "Now if you'll excuse me I'd best be off there isn't  much time."
With that she urged the bird into a leap its small wings flapping swiftly to keep herself and it airborne.  Once in the air she activated  a teleportation spell and brought herself to said island landing at the base of the smoking volcano.
Reaching into the saddle bag she pulled forth one of the crystals the one containing Ifrita and intoned, "Mighty Ifrita, spirit of fire and destruction come forth."
A gout of flame burst from the crystal and turned into a vortex before her that coalesced into a large shape.  Goat horns swept back gracefully from the brow of the creature.  It was sinewy and scaled resembling an upright salamander in appearance.  Embers glowed in place of its eyes as it turned toward her.
Immense heat radiated off the the spirit and it almost took Elpis's breath away as she commanded it to absorb the surrounding aether.  Her focus was solely on controlling the creature for it was apparent to her that the slightest lapse in concentration would allow it to run rampant.
Once its task was done the mountain ceased to smoke.  It was a struggle but she managed to call the creature back into the crystal.  That  was overtly straining under the pressure of the spirit.  Swiftly she remounted her avian concept and teleported herself and it far out to see in a remote area with a single small island.
Once there she threw Ifrita's crystal down as it was begning to crack under the immense inferno within it.  Once again the spirit rose roaring in defiance as it manifested.  With out hesitation she pulled the other crystal from the bag grateful that Hyth had chosen her most powerful concept.  It was definitely going to be needed given what she currently faced.
"Child of the sea and stream.  Spirit of water, Kelpie come forth."  she called holding the crystal in her palm.
Moments later the sea surrounding the island appeared to take the shape of a colossal scaled horse.  She then willed it to deal with Ifrita.  The two titans clashed on the tiny island at first her concept seeming to not be enough.  She kept channeling aether to her creation in hopes of turning the tide.  Then just when all seemed lost Kelpie surrounded Ifrita in a vortex of water dragging the spirit to the depths snuffing it out.
All was calm for a moment then the island seemed to begin to shake.  Swiftly Elpis urged her mount higher and away just in time as the island split open and magma began spewing forth.
Holding out her crystal once more and called upon the aether of her Kelpie concept drawing back within containment.
Once Kelpie was safely stored away Elpis sensed out to see if aught of Ifrita remained.  From what she could sense it was not the case.  Its battle with Kelpie and the birth of the new volcano seemed to have dispersed its aether back into the River of the Underworld.
A good thing too, she thought grimly, Lahabrea needs to temper his creations a bit. That was by far to wild.
Elpis knew it had been a near thing once Ifrita had absorbed all of that aether.  Its power amplified it had sought to escape its containment sooner than she had anticipated fortunately she was always swift to act so it had not ended in disaster as it could have.
Now to return to the village of Baccus and inform them of the good news, and to get the grapes. she said to herself teleporting yet again.
************************************************
"Join us Hades," Hyth called cheerfully waving him over to where he sat along with Elpis who was leaning against a very odd concept.  In front of them was a basket piled high with grapes.
Shaking his head he strode over and flopped down next to the pair stating sarcastically, "I take it then your plan was a success?"
Elpis nodded, "Worked exactly like I'd hoped, though Lalabrea should learn to put some restraint in his concepts...it was no easy task putting it down.  My concept of a water spirit was almost not enough."
Hades snorted, "This coming from the woman who saved an entire island because the grapes tasted good."  At her confused look he continued, "Least that is what you told Elidibus."
"That was it...." she began, "Hmm I was in a bit of a hurry so I might not have fully explained."
Hyth let out a laugh at that and popped one of said grapes in his mouth, "I for one say if that had been reason alone it would have been enough."
Hades shook his head, "Honestly I swear the two of you don't take your positions nearly as serious as you should."
"Your wrong Hades," Elpis stated looking him square in the eye green catching gold, "I take my seat very serious.  What I had left out was the people of the island had spent their entire lives cultivating these grapes.  It is the only place where you can find them.  And they asked me to save their life’s work from certain doom."
Hades blinked a moment then said, "Forgive me then, my friend.  Though had you explained it like that to Elidibus I never would have said what I said."
She gave a sheepish grin, "I was mentally going over all I needed to do and trying to estimate how much time I had when he asked me that and I must have forgotten to give him the full explanation,"
Hades sighed in exasperation, sometimes the woman was as flightly as her favorite feathered friends.
"Hyth," he stated, "Hand me some of those and let me see if they are actually worth all of the aggravation its going to cause listen to Lahabrea whine about losing his 'masterwork."
As the man obliged him handing him large stem filled with the grapes he turned to Elpis stating, "And I won't be listening to it alone.  You will explain to him the full of why you needed Ifrita."
As he popped one of the grapes in his mouth she sighed and nodded.  He felt a grim sense of sastifaction at that and he did have to admit these were tasty.

If you’re still doing kissing prompts? #4
4. An accidental brush of lips followed by a pause and going back for another, on purpose.
Author’s note: this is rated M for suggestive content and violence. Inspired by this beautiful work of art by @kelpie-earnest.
“It’s my brother. He can’t know I’m here,” Max said. “He’ll kill me. He’ll kill us.”
Steve gazed through the gap in Joyce Byers’ curtains, out to where the Camaro was tucked in the driveway like some gigantic waiting spider. The noise generated by the engine was tremendous, a powerful, vibrating thrum of tectonic force that could be felt through the walls. Right through to the marrow.
“Lock yourselves in,” he said.
Four pairs of disbelieving eyes swiveled around to stare at him. Steve felt the strange urge to laugh. Before he could, though, they all started arguing at once:
“Steve, no—”
“Didn’t you hear what I just said? He’ll kill you—”
“Hey, hey, hey!” Steve said in a loud voice, clapping his hands. “Did I stutter, you boneheads? Lock yourselves in, I said. Don’t open the door until you hear me say so.” He gestured vaguely to the window. “If it goes south—”
He heard Dustin’s intake of breath, registered Lucas’ eyes growing large and round in their sockets, but couldn’t bring himself to acknowledge them both, lest he start thinking too hard about what it was he meant to do—
“You run like hell, okay?”
It was fine, he told himself. He had survived the Demodogs. He could survive this, too. One carrier was chump change compared to what lurked in Hawkins’ cavernous underbelly. He was going to be completely fine.
It wasn’t until he stepped out onto the porch that he realized he’d forgotten to bring his bat.
“Am I dreaming, or is that you, Harrington?”
As always, the cherry of Billy’s lit cigarette preceded the rest of him. Steve watched its slow orbit in the gloom, his arms crossed loosely over his chest. Something made him uncross them, straighten his spine. A mnemonic echo. Billy’s fangs jutting wetly from the bed of his mouth, his hand held out. Plant your feet.
“I didn’t know carriers could dream,” he said evenly.
Billy lowered his hand. The cherry descended like a miniature comet, trailing embers and smoke. “I’m looking for my step-sister,” he said. The words were casual, almost friendly. They didn’t match his eyes. “Little birdie told me she was here.”
“I haven’t seen her, man. Sorry.”
A sudden explosion of glass made him jump: a beer bottle, flung from Billy’s hand into the gutter. Foam bubbled sluggishly from its broken neck, spreading across the blacktop in jagged white lines.
“You know,” Billy said. The driver’s door slammed shut, but the headlights stayed on; they cut a bright, glaring swath through the trees. “I was meant to be goin’ on a date tonight, amigo. I had it all planned out. Sure, his face wasn’t much to look at, but his neck? A whole meal. He had his own donor card, too. Certified and everything. But then what happens? Maxine goes missing, and I get told—I get told that I have to find her sorry ass, because she’s my responsibility. Which means my night—all that hard work—is down the toilet. Fucked.”
He smiled, then. Or snarled. The cherry of his cigarette rose, a wandering red star, a demon’s eye that kept lazily opening and closing on each inhale. Billy opened his mouth, still smiling, and doused the cigarette on his tongue. There was an angry hss of cooking flesh, like animal fat rendering over an open flame.
“As far as I’m concerned, you took my fuckin’ food, Harrington,” Billy continued, dropping the butt under his boot. “Are you gonna pay for it?”
“Will you leave them alone if I do?”
He could tell by the way Billy paused that whatever he’d been expecting when he stepped out of the Camaro, it hadn’t been that. Steve watched him flick his tongue over his teeth, telling himself that he was used to the sight by now. It was generally considered to be bad etiquette for carriers to flaunt their fangs in public, the same way it was considered indecent for non-carrier women to breastfeed in shopping malls. Billy was either unaware of the unspoken social laws of his kind, or he considered himself to be above them. Steve would bet all the money in his wallet on the latter; whether it was on the court or in class, the locker rooms or at house parties, Billy always had his fangs out.
“If the price is right,” Billy said. He was silent for another moment, his tongue between his teeth, studying Steve with an expression that was difficult to read. Sizing up the merchandise, Steve thought. “Have you been tested?”
He nodded. “When I was with Nancy, I—”
“Oh, that’s right,” Billy exclaimed, his smile turning into a sneer, “you were her blood bag.”
Steve gritted his teeth through the mockery. “I was her donor.”
“Please. We both know what you were, Harrington. What you still are. There’s no use denying it.” Billy moved with frightening agility; one moment he was on the other side of the road, the next he was breathing down Steve’s neck, his teeth—both incisors, each at least an inch long—hot and hard against Steve’s pulse. His pupils were two scorch marks, deepest obsidian ringed in flaming red and orange. “You and everybody else in that house, you’re all just meat. Prey. And I’m the hunter.”
“Not tonight,” Steve said. He turned his head, willing himself to stare into the darkest center of the red. The rage and hunger there. “Not ever. You can have me. But you can’t have them. They’re off limits from now on, you understand?”
Billy’s lips peeled apart. “Like I said. If the price is right.” He jerked his head in the direction of the Camaro. “Let’s have a taste.”
“Don’t you wanna take this elsewhere?”
“Why? I’m already dressed up for it.” In the blink of an eye, Billy was standing on the opposite sidewalk, holding the passenger door open. “Get in the car, blood bag.”
The inside of the Camaro was surprisingly clean, save for the smell: hot ash and hot blood. Visceral and vital. It was the smell of a fever that had yet to burn itself out, cloying and oppressive; the smell of a cancer ward. The word vampire was outdated. Vampire was for old Christopher Lee movies, for actors with powdered faces and plastic fangs smeared with sticky, ketchup-looking fake blood. Carrier was treatable; vampire wasn’t. Carrier made it sound akin to plague; carrier and medical emergency and regressive behavior. Carriers—not vampires—still retained their humanity somewhere inside, despite their monstrous symptoms. Steve knew better. Billy, like Nancy before him, was nothing human.
“Where did Wheeler like to have her fill?” Billy asked. “From your neck?”
“No. From my thumb.”
“Your—seriously?” Billy threw back his head, letting out a quick, yipping laugh. Steve followed the needlepoint gleam of his incisors with nauseated fascination. “How fuckin’ chaste. And you—you were okay with that, pretty boy?”
“You know, they don’t recommend you drink from the neck, typically,” Steve said. “Because it’s so close to the artery—”
“That’s what makes it feel so fuckin’ good, though. Like, really good.” Billy caught his eye in the rearview mirror and smirked, then leaned across to squeeze his knee. “Better than getting your finger sucked by some prissy bitch in her daddy’s pillbox McMansion.”
Steve pushed his knee out of Billy’s grip. “Don’t call her a bitch.”
“I’ll call her whatever the fuck I want, Harrington. She deprived you, and she did it on purpose. I bet she knew that if you had it elsewhere, you’d leave her in the dust.”
Something about Billy’s eyes, this close—how the red surrounding his pupils fluctuated as he spoke, shifting and dancing like real flames—had loosened Steve’s tongue, made him less aware of himself and his surroundings. Hadn’t there been a warning in the pamphlets about looking directly into carriers’ eyes? He couldn’t remember.
“It doesn’t matter,” he heard himself say. “She left me in the dust first.”
(Why not? Steve thought. Underneath the blood and ash and sickroom smell, he could just make out Billy’s cologne, a hint of sweetness to offset the bitter. The world was going to hell in a handbasket, but Billy looked like the closest thing to a model from a Calvin Klein magazine spread. Pretty. Hair spilling down his shoulders in soft, stylized waves, his muscled arms sitting snugly in the sleeves of his maroon shirt; Steve had always envied him for his arms. Why the fuck not?)
“She did, didn’t she?” Billy made a soft, sympathetic noise that was as bogus as it was scathing. “Oh, and she hurt you, too. She really hurt. But it’s okay now, though, because you’ve got me. And I can show you what you’ve been missing out on.”
He leaned across, so abruptly Steve didn’t have time to parse what was happening; panicking, he blurted out: “Is it gonna hurt?”
Billy’s smile paused inches from his neck. “It will, and then it won’t,” he said, “but you gotta relax first.”
Steve thought of Nancy. Billy’s hand was creeping up his arm, over his shoulder. Pulling the collar of his jacket and T-shirt to one side. Moving slow, like he wanted to savor it. Steve fixed his eyes straight ahead, on the outline of the driveway just outside the reach of the Camaro’s headlights. The engine growled and shuddered underneath his feet like an animal that wanted to throw him off. He thought of Nancy, or he tried to. Every time he pictured her smile, he came up short.
Billy let out a shaky breath. “Beautiful,” he said.
“What?” Steve said, distracted.
“Nothing, Harrington. Just relax.”
With Nancy, it had been like getting a flu shot. A quick jab, minimal pain, no mess. If Steve became lightheaded, she would stop. If he told her to stop, she would stop.
He didn’t know if Billy would extend him the same courtesy.
Minimal pain, no mess. Billy’s thumb caressed his neck, soothing the hoofbeat clatter of his heart. He was no longer smiling. Steve closed his eyes.
It was quick, he’d give Billy that—the initial pain. Steve shifted in the passenger seat, tilting his head as far back as the headrest would allow; Billy moved with him, cupping his jaw. He bit down lightly, suckling on Steve’s neck. Pain blossomed like a flare in the dark. Fading as Billy’s teeth probed deeper. He made a noise against Steve’s skin. It might have been a sigh of relief. A moan. Steve couldn’t tell.
“Let me know when you see the colors,” Billy said thickly. He sounded drunk. His hand was back on Steve’s knee, massaging the bone, anchoring them both.
“The—”
Billy bit down again and Steve cried out, shocked, his spine bowing. Not from pain. The pain had subsided entirely, morphed into a distant, warm prickling. It was actually kind of nice. Steve let the tension in his shoulders slacken, giving Billy’s mouth more leeway to rove over his skin. He was sucking hard, lapping at Steve’s neck like a dog with a bowl of water, his Adam’s apple working as he swallowed, paused to breathe.
“Knew you’d taste good.”
Billy’s voice, faint. Prickling like pins and needles. Steve was starting to feel as though he’d fallen asleep with his arm trapped underneath his body; the tingling, pins and needles sensation had spread from his neck down to his wrist. Numb and blissful. The heat from Billy’s mouth was building, tightening into a stranglehold. The car was getting warmer.
“I’d think about it,” Billy’s voice said. Still faint, still distant and removed. Steve fought to open his eyes; he was dimly aware of someone watching him, the hand on his knee parting his legs to run up the inseam of his jeans. He was too warm to do anything about it. “You know, when we were in the showers together and you’d … you’d just stand there, ignoring everybody else, I’d look at you, and think about what it would be like if I just …”
“Tore my throat out?” Steve slurred.
The prickling had turned into an itch, restless, fierce. Billy latched onto his neck, sucking with a junkie’s greed for his next fix, like he would die if he didn’t have it, like there was nothing in the world that mattered more. “No,” he said, laughing. Pulling off his neck with an obscene, theatrical pop that should have made Steve retch. Instead, it sent desire licking down his spine. “Hey, I’ve never killed anybody. Ask Laurie. Ask Tina. They both came to me begging for it. You know, I’ve always thought there was somethin’ in the water here that drove people crazy horny. Maybe you’re all just bored. Too wimpy to turn to meth. I was doing them a favor, man. There are worse things to get hooked on.”
“You were doing them a favor, huh? Wow. What a hero you are.”
“It was a mutually beneficial partnership,” Billy insisted. “You can feel it, right? It’s like … fuck, it’s like we’re fucking, almost. Or doing poppers. Except there’s no come down, no limit to how high you can get … you just keep flying … and flying …”
“Uh,” was all Steve could say. It did sort of feel like he was flying. He could no longer feel his arm, or his leg; the left side of his body seemed to have dissolved, become incorporeal. He didn’t have any sense of where the roof of the Camaro had gone; he was rising, being steadily submerged into the night sky. There came another moan. Billy’s teeth were thumb tacks pressing into the grooves of his palms, pins and needles, prickling and itching and stoking the fire between them.
“Can you feel it, Steve?” he was panting. His hand clutched at Steve’s leg in ecstasy and desperation. “Can you see me?”
“I—I can see you,” Steve mumbled. He was hot all over, floating in an ozone layer of swirling blues and greens and pinks. Each color was its own self-contained galaxy; each color reminded him of Billy’s eyes, ever-changing. Rings hot with lust. “God, the colors, Billy … I didn’t know …”
“It’s called a glamour,” Billy said. “I told you, baby. It’s good, isn’t it?”
“Good? It’s—it’s incredible. God, I’m—”
“Yeah?” Somewhere back on Earth, Billy’s smile had returned, wide and cannibalistic. “Yeah, baby? Are you close?”
“I’m—” Steve said, swallowing. His hands flapped at Billy’s chest like maimed birds. “I’m—I’m—”
It came at him out of nowhere, all at once. When it did, his mouth was still straining to form the words that he could no longer speak, pleasure robbing him of all ability to do so: I’m, I’m, ohmyGod, Billy, Billy, I’m gonna. Something soft brushed his cheek and he automatically turned towards it, his mouth opening, searching for comfort like a newborn’s rooting reflex searched for the nipple. He met the soft something halfway, and tasted himself.
Billy kissed him hard, his mouth tasting of Steve’s blood. The kiss was without fangs, without hunger or violence. His hand caressed Steve’s neck, played with his hair. His grip was lax and boneless.
He was well fed.
“Like we’re fucking,” Steve repeated. His voice sounded husky and raw, his vocal chords crippled. He was still coming, still high; his wrists trembled through the ghostly aftershocks. “Did you dream about that, too?”
He knew Billy was watching him. The prickling in his neck was all but gone; the wound had already sutured itself closed, and it would only reopen the next time Billy came for him. And he would come, Steve thought, with an odd sense of pride. Billy was the one who needed him, now. He wouldn’t be able to find it anywhere else. Not the way Steve tasted.
Billy reached for the steering wheel. He turned the key, and the headlights stuttered. Then, like a candleflame guttering out, they went dark.

Chapter Eight: Ron Eats Slugs.
"You can't miss the defense against the dark arts lessons-"
"You can't tell me what to do."
"You have to respect him! He's a teacher!" Hermione whispered angrily.
Ron sat down in front of them and said Harry was at Quidditch practice.
"Maybe we can still catch him," Ron offered, "once I'm done with breakfast..."
While she waited, she finally decided to open her mother's letter.
She'd been way too nervous the whole week to open it, afraid of what might be inside.
'Mel Dumbledore.
I can't even imagine why would you do such a thing on your very first day. I'm speechless. Mr. Weasley’s car? I don't understand why you thought that was a good idea.
Maybe you were just following Ron and Harry's lead, which I must say, is a little disappointing.'
Mel didn't want to keep reading, but she figured it was better to get it over with.
'-You should never base your actions on what other people expect you to do, Mel. Not even if that person is one of your closest friends. How do you expect to become your own whole witch if you keep following other people's tails?
I'm not angry, I'm sad that you didn't trust your own instinct -let's be honest, I know for sure that whole adventure wasn't your idea- please, next time you're in trouble, take a deep breath and do what's best for you, and not what others would prefer you to do.
Be good. I'll wait for your reply,
Mum.'
"I'm a failure," Mel pouted.
"How come?" Hermione looked up.
"My mum says she's disappointed because I went along with Ron's idea instead if insisting on staying."
"How does she know it wasn't your idea?" Ron frowned.
"She's my mum," Mel replied sternly, "besides, I suppose Dumbledore explained the whole thing to her."
"At least you learned the lesson and you weren't expelled," Hermione shrugged, "but see, this is what I mean, you can't just abandon your studies, Mel. You have a second chance."
"I really think you're wrong," Mel sighed, "but I don't dare to hurt my mum more than I already did..."
Tumblr media
The toasts were cold by the time Harry went out to the field, he saw them on the bench and approached with a weary expression.
"Aren't you finished yet?" asked Ron.
"Haven't even started," said Harry, his eyes flicked to the toasts Hermione and Ron were eating, "Wood's been teaching us new moves."
"Take one," Mel said lovingly, offering the toasts, "you can't play with an empty stomach, remember?"
Harry blushed, lightly mumbling a 'thank you', and devouring it.
As he mounted on his broom and flew around with Fred and George, Colin Creevey started to take pictures.
"Look this way, Harry! This way!"
"You know, say what you want about Ginny," Mel mentioned as she watched the younger boy, "but at least she doesn't follow Harry around with a camera..."
"I still don't understand why she's so shy around him," Ron frowned, "it's so weird"
"She likes him," Mel shrugged, "people act oddly around the person they like, right?"
"I wouldn't know," He raised his eyebrows, "never liked anybody"
"Yeah," Mel sighed, her attention back on Harry, "Me neither..."
"Look, it's the Slytherin team," Hermione pointed to the large group of people nearing the field.
"Holy Snitch," Mel leaned over, squinting, "is that- it is! Malfoy- and they- they have new brooms!"
"Who?"
"All of them!"
"This can't be good," Ron stood up, "let's go."
The girls followed their friend down to the field.
"What's happening?" Ron asked Harry. "Why aren't you playing? And what's he doing here?"
"I'm the new Slytherin Seeker, Weasley," said Malfoy, "Everyone's just been admiring the brooms my father's bought our team. Good, aren't they? But perhaps the Gryffindor team will be able to raise some gold and get new brooms, too. You could raffle off those Cleansweep Fives; I expect a museum would bid for them."
The Slytherin team laughed.
"At least no one on the Gryffindor team had to buy their way in," said Hermione. "They got in on pure talent."
Mel couldn't have said it better.
"No one asked your opinion, you fiIthy little Mudblood."
"How dare you!" Alicia Spinnet gasped.
Ron pulled out his wand.
"You'll pay for that one, Malfoy!"
Mel didn't know what was going on and got even more confused once Ron fell back as if something had hit him.
"Ron! Ron! Are you all right?" Hermione kneeled next to him.
Ron was throwing up slugs. One after the other, it was gross.
"That wand..." Mel shook her head, trying to help him stand.
"We'd better get him to Hagrid's, it's nearest," said Harry and help her get Ron on his feet.
"What happened, Harry? What happened? Is he ill? But you can cure him, can't you?" Colin was now on the field, eagerly jumping around them like a puppy.
Ron puked a particularly huge slug.
"Oooh," said Colin, "Can you hold him still, Harry?"
"Get out of the way, Colin!" Harry demanded.
They walked as fast as possible, trying to avoid stepping on the hideous slugs Ron kept throwing up.
"Nearly there, Ron," said Hermione when they were a few meters away from Hagrid's hut, "You'll be all right in a minute - almost there -"
Suddenly, Gilderoy Lockhart emerged from the cabin.
"Quick, behind here," Harry hissed, and they took Ron behind a bush.
"It's a simple matter if you know what you're doing!" Lockhart was saying aloud. "If you need help, you know where I am! I'll let you have a copy of my book. I'm surprised you haven't already got one - I'll sign one tonight and send it over. Well, good-bye!"
They waited a few seconds, Ron still having not the greatest time. Hermione knocked on the door. Hagrid appeared quickly, for a second he looked like he was about to yell at them, but it soon changed into a smile.
"Bin wonderin' when you'd come ter see me - come in, come in - thought you mighta bin Professor Lockhart back again -"
Hagrid was not surprised by Ron's issue, he let Harry explained as Ron sat there, shaking uncontrollably.
"Better out than in," he said cheerfully, handing Ron a big bucket, "Get 'em all up, Ron."
"I don't think there's anything to do except wait for it to stop," said Hermione, "That's a difficult curse to work at the best of times, but with a broken wand-"
"What did Lockhart want with you, Hagrid?" Harry asked, scratching Fang's ears.
"Givin' me advice on gettin' kelpies out of a well," growled Hagrid, "Like I don' know. An' bangin' on about some banshee he banished. If one word of it was true, I'll eat my kettle."
"I think you're being a bit unfair. Professor Dumbledore obviously thought he was the best man for the job -" Hermione was quick to correct, but Hagrid interrupted.
"He was the on' man for the job," said Hagrid, "An' I mean the on' one. Gettin' very difficult ter find anyone fer the Dark Arts job. People aren't too keen ter take it on, see. They're startin' ter think it's jinxed. No one's lasted long fer a while now. So tell me," said Hagrid, looking at Ron. "Who was he tryin' ter curse?"
"We were on the Quidditch team and the Slytherin team walked up to them, Malfoy is the new seeker, apparently he bought his way in..."
"Malfoy called Hermione something -it must've been really bad, because everyone went wild"
"It was bad," said Ron finally able to speak, "Malfoy called her 'Mudblood,' Hagrid -"
That was all he could say before throwing up another bunch of slugs.
"He didn'!" Hagrid gasped.
"He did," she said, "But I don't know what it means. I could tell it was really rude, of course -"
"It's about the most insulting thing he could think of," gasped Ron, coming back up. "Mudblood's a really foul name for someone who is Muggleborn - you know, non-magic parents. There are some wizards -like Malfoy's family- who think they're better than everyone else because they're what people call pure-blood." He gave a small burp, and a single slug fell into his outstretched hand. He threw it into the basin and continued, "I mean, the rest of us know it doesn't make any difference at all. Look at Neville Longbottom -he's pure-blood and he can hardly stand a cauldron the right way up."
"An' they haven't invented a spell our Hermione can' do," said Hagrid proudly, making Hermione go a brilliant shade of magenta.
"It's a disgusting thing to call someone," said Ron, wiping his sweaty brow with a shaking hand. "Dirty blood, see. Common blood. It's ridiculous. Most wizards these days are half-blood anyway. If we hadn't married Muggles we'd've died out."
He retched and ducked out of sight again.
"Well, I don' blame yeh fer tryin' ter curse him, Ron," said Hagrid loudly over the thuds of more slugs hitting the basin. "Bu' maybe it was a good thing yer wand backfired. 'Spect Lucius Malfoy would've come marchin' up ter school if yeh'd cursed his son. Least yer not in trouble."
"His father is just as awful and annoying," Mel huffed, "one of this days, I don't know which one of us, but I'm sure we'll end up giving Malfoy the beating of his life"
"It won't be you, of course," Harry said sarcastically, "you hate getting into fights"
"Shut up, Glasses."
"Harry," said Hagrid abruptly, "Gotta bone ter pick with yeh. I've heard you've bin givin' out signed photos. How come I haven't got one?"
Mel snorted, taking a treacle fudge that Hagrid had kindly put on the table for them. Harry looked completely offended.
"I have not been giving out signed photos," he said, "If Lockhart's still spreading that around-"
"I'm on'y jokin'," He laughed, patting Harry so hard on the back he almost hit the table face-first, "I knew yeh hadn't really. I told Lockhart yeh didn' need teh. Yer more famous than him without tryin'."
"Bet he didn't like that," said Harry.
"Don' think he did," Hagrid grinned. "An' then I told him I'd never read one o' his books an' he decided ter go. Treacle fudge, Ron?"
Tumblr media
"Can I be your maid of honor, Glasses?" Mel teased as they walked back inside the castle, Hagrid mentioned that he'd found Ginny walking around his house trying to run into Harry, "If you and Ginny want to, of course, I'll be more than happy-"
"Stop," Harry snapped, "I don't tease you about Fred and George, so don't tease me"
"I just think it's so romantic!" She grinned.
"Of course you do, Mellow," He replied.
Mel gasped.
"I told you not to tell him about that stupid nickname!" Mel turned to look at Ron, who had shrunken in his place.
"Sorry! I didn't do it on purpose, we were talking the other day and it slipped!"
"It slipped -don't give me that look, Harry. The fact that you found a better nickname doesn't mean I'll stop calling you Glasses."
"I wasn't counting on it," He smirked.
"There you are," Professor McGonagall walked up to them, "You will do your detentions this evening."
"What're we doing, Professor?" said Ron, nervously suppressing a burp.
"You will be polishing the silver in the trophy room with Mr. Filch," said Professor McGonagall. "And no magic, Weasley - elbow grease."
"Miss Dumbledore will help Hagrid, and Potter will be helping Professor Lockhart answer his fan mail," said Professor McGonagall.
"Oh no - Professor, can't I go and do the trophy room, too?" said Harry, "Or help Hagrid?"
"Certainly not," said Professor McGonagall, "Professor Lockhart requested you particularly. Eight o'clock sharp, the three of you."
"Filch'll have me there all night," said Ron as they sat on the Gryffindor table, "No magic! There must be about a hundred cups in that room. I'm no good at Muggle cleaning."
"I'd swap anytime," said Harry, "I've had loads of practice with the Dursleys. Answering Lockhart's fan mail... he'll be a nightmare..."
Both of them looked at Mel with the same frown.
"You got the best deal," Ron complained, "helping Hagrid? He'll probably let you sit and watch"
"No, he'll probably make me work hard," Mel replied, "but I can't say I won't enjoy it, as long as it's not inside the forbidden forest..."
She made her way out of the castle alone after dinner, less upset than expected with her detention, humming absentmindedly to the dim afternoon light.
"Good evening," Said someone behind her.
Mel turned to see Erick, catching up to her.
"Mind if I join you, Miss?"
"I'm heading to detention," Mel informed him.
"I just want to tell you something," He said shortly.
"Well..." She eyed the boy curiously, "go ahead?"
"I didn't know about Malfoy- about him being the new seeker- I didn't know."
"Oh," Mel stopped walking, taken by surprise. "I wasn't expecting you to know."
"Good," He nodded, a soft frown upon his features, "I heard my brother making fun of the Weasley boy, is he alright?"
"He's better," Mel tilted her head, "Why does it bother you?"
"I'm not-" He said, then immediately he corrected, "I am- Not for him if I'm honest- I was worried about you, thinking I knew about Malfoy and decided not to tell you. I always knew my brother is an idiot but it never occurred to me that he'd be stupid enough to sell a position to someone that isn't even that good. We're surely gonna lose the cup again- not that I mind, I've never been a Quidditch fan myself, but you know... the house cup is a high stake to lose"
Mel observed him with a pensive expression, Erick raised a brow.
"What?"
"The Weasleys are such a lovely family... they tease, and most of the time they're arguing, but they love each other," She shrugged, "it's just weird to me that you speak so poorly about your own brother, he's your family, you know... I thought purebloods were loyal to their own kind"
It seemed like she'd touched a sensitive subject. Erick's eyes shifted to an angry glare and he said, very coldly:
"Not everyone can have a pretty family, Miss. Not all purebloods are as likable as the Weasleys."
The girl tried to fix it, but it was too late.
"I didn't mean-"
"Good luck with detention," He turned around.
"You could come and meet Hagrid if you want?" She offered loudly, Erick was already half-way.
"I'll pass," The boy replied, climbing up the stairs and back to the castle.
Tumblr media
She was right about Hagrid, he made her work a lot but it was bearable and in the end, he let her go earlier than expected. At eleven she was already seated in the common room, finishing her History of Magic essay and softly stroking Grey's tiny head.
Once she was done, she wrote a letter to her mother, apologizing and promising she'd stay out of trouble for real this time. Then also wrote one for her uncle, he probably knew all the story by now, but Mel figured it was time to write to him anyway.
While looking for more ink, Erick's note fell from one of her books. Her stomach sank at the thought of their chat a few hours prior. Why did she always end up upsetting him? She wondered if being friends with him was actually a good idea.
Harry appeared around midnight.
"Oh," She jumped in her place, remembering she wasn't the only one who had detention, "how was it?"
"I... I'm not sure," He sat down next to her, the girl messily put her things away, "something odd happened while I was with Lockhart..."
"Odd?"
"I heard a voice," Harry shook his head with incertitude, "it sounded like it was in the room with us but when I told Lockhart he said he hadn't heard a thing"
"What kind of things did it say?"
Harry shivered.
"Not happy things for sure"
She nodded, a bit confused by his statement. She figured he was just confused, but believed him. Harry had no reason to be lying about something like that.
"Maybe Malfoy found out where you were and decided to do that, you should ask Ron if he had some strange occurrence like yours once he's back"
Harry looked up.
"He's not here yet?"
"I don't think so, Hagrid let me go earlier and Hermione told me none of you had arrived yet"
His eyes landed on the fireplace, deep in thought.
"I don't feel like it was just a joke..."
"Cheer up," Mel searched for his hand and gave it a little squeeze, "at least our detention it's over!"
"Yeah, yes..." He looked back at her, trying to smile, "I'll go to bed, you should too"
"I will," She nodded and watched as Harry got up and left.
The girl picked up her things. She felt her skin tingle where Harry's hand had touched.

Kelpie Boyfriend
Summary: Y/n return to her hometown for the boring Christmas party with her huge and loud family, but little is she know that a certain mythical creature will appear in her life.
WARNINGS: Gore, smut to be
(This is my first fiction i’m writing, and english is not my first languase. So be kind pleaseee ahaha thanks)
Words:1341
Watching the trees passing by the window next to me on the train, listening to my favorite song to calm my nerves, thinking that i have put up with my huge family, my mom nagging me about when i will bring a boy home, my siblings annoying me, my uncles always arguing about stupid stuffs and my aunts yelling to my littles cousins to stop pulling pranks. The only that i’m happy to see is my Grandpa, he was my favorite in the family, always calm, sweet and understanding. He lives in a cottage near an lake, it’s a big house so the christmas party will be there and so he not feel so alone, since my Grandma pass away nobody go see him and i can’t stay with him since i’m in the city studying litrature, it’s was from my grandpa that i stole my love from books, i remember staying the summers in my grandparents house and grandpa would always reading books and telling me tales of the celtic folks and others cultures.
When i exit the train, my older brother, John, was waiting for me in the car “Hey squirt, how you doing?” And here we go, i was the smallest of the family, so my brothers are always calling me that and i hate it. “I told you to stop calling me that, John” “nice to know you’re well, i’m good too thanks to ask squirt.” Just rolling my eyes with a small smile in my face, i enter car and so John. The two of my brothers, John was the one i can tolerate but my other brother, Steve, was another story, he is always annoying me and when we were children, he put the fault of the pranks he would pull on me, let’s say i was always grounded.
Arriving to my grandpa house, I open the door of the car and i can listening the yelling from outside the house. Sighing, i walk to my nightmare. My mom was the first to hug me, and after was the rest of my family, except Steve. “Sweet, how are you? Are the study going alright? Do I have to put an extra sit for a boy?” “ Hi mom, I’m good, the study are going great and no, no need of an extra sit.” “No boy yet?” Sighing, i shake my head. “Joanne leave the kid alone, hi peanut” “hi dad” My dad was like my grandpa, he was always saving me from the questions of my mom, thank god. Walking to my grandpa, giving a big hug. “ hi, grandpa. Looking forward for this christmas?” Chuckle a bit “if you only know how excited i am.” I always love the sarcasm of grandpa, he never understand how can a family be this loud.
Sitting at the table, we start eating dinner and chatting, well yelling. After two hours i said that was going outside, was starting having a headache with all yelling. Walking to the lake, i sit by a tree looking to the cold night, it felt nice the cold hitting the face. After a moment i hear a sound of like hooves near the lake, standing up, i look around to what’s source of the sound.
When I was getting closer, sound was more louder, thats was when I saw a beautiful mare, with beautiful black coat and black mane, that have like seaweeds interlaced, the eyes were like a stormy blue, that was the most beautiful horse I have seen.
When we lock eyes, it was like he was calling me, it’s was strange but I start to walk slowly to the mare, it was weird that the horse didn’t try to run or acting aggressive, it’s was like he was docile. When I was like a feet away from him, i start petting him, looking around to see were he came from but i didn’t see nobody or a stable near. The horse start to lie down if like for me to mount him and like that i did it, did not even realize that i had done. He start walking around in small trot, it was nice, i felt free with no worries but that slowly vanished when he start running straight to the lake, i try to jump off the horse but it’s like I was glued to it.
Starting to panic, I yell for help yelling for my dad, for my grandpa but was to late, water start to rise to my neck, trying to take a breath, the horse start to take me to the depth of the lake, I open my eyes expecting to see the horse but what I saw was completely different from that, it was an horrifying monster, with sharp teeth, two large round black eyes that looks like death, with that view, I lost consciousness.
When I woke up, I was in large cave, it have a fire in the middle, I was on a bed with fur and others materials. Starting to stand up, looking around to see if the creature was here, to if I can get out of here, my heart is beating so fast that felt like it was get out of my chest. Walking around I start to hear a wet noise and a cracking like bone sounds, looking behind a huge rock that was there, I saw the creature eating what’s looks like a human, blood was everywhere, the whole body was mutilated, that when i remember the tales my grandpa told me about a monster that take a shape of beautiful horse to seduce people to riding him and then drowning his victims and eating them, it was a Kelpie.
I start to back away but fell over and the creature look to were I was, panic take me over and start running but he was to fast and was right in front of me, it’s was huge. All the sudden he start to shape shifting and was before me as a human, an handsome guy with pale skin, long black hair and a stormy blue eyes, it’s gorgeous. “ And where are you going, little lady?” His voice make a shiver run down my back, it’s was rough but gentle at same time. Trying to talk but nothing was out. Smirking down to me “it’s been a long time, my mate.”
What? Mate? “Who are you? What do you mean by mate?” Chuckles sound in the air “ I watched you when you were a little child, playing near the lake every summer, at first I thought to drown you but day after day I start to like you, how you love to read, to listening the story’s that your grandpa told you, and how you get mad with your brothers, even I wanted to kill them for making you mad.” I stared at him, afraid. “I knew that you were my mate but when you didn’t came back, it felt like something was ripped from me, and know that i have you here, I will never let you go, NEVER.” Then he pick me up and threw me to the bed with the furs. “ Stay here, I’m going to hunt for you my mate, and don’t try to run because the only way out is on my back.” And with this he transforme to the horse I saw near the lake and run out of the cave. Terrified, I stay on the bed, what he was going to hunt? People? Oh no, my family is near the lake, I hope that now go out maybe at this hour the will asleep.
I hope...
Heyyy, if you like this story to be afraid to tell, i will be post part 2
And this my first story that i write so be kind

Magizoologist-in-Training #1
Magizoologist-in-Training #1
Tumblr media
“I told you to go back to bed (Y/N).”
“And I told you that you can’t make me.” She retorted, instead paying attention to the Kelpie habitat in front of her.
“I don’t want you to get your hand bitten off too.” He stopped her feeding, making her look clearly at him. Bunty had left early for the day after she tried feeding the Kelpie by herself.
“You know I’m his favorite.” She looked at him pointed. “If anything, I should be worried about him biting your hand off.” And before he could utter another word, she took off her long cardigan, leaving her in a tank top and slacks. Newt turned around blushing, and failed to stop her from plunging into the water.
He remembered the day he met her for the first time. Strands of her hair stuck out from her pony tail as she approached him out of breath. Half of her face was covered in a large scarf, and the other half was pink from the harsh winter winds. They had communicated through owls before, but it was the first time they met face to face. She had persistently asked the magizoologist, hoping to assist him in caring for the animals and learning about the different magic species on the way. She was very interested in the care of magical creatures and who better to learn from than Newton Scamander himself. It didn’t hurt to have Professor Dumbledore to owl him a letter of recommendation for her. After months of letters back and forth, Newt finally agreed to take her on as his assistant and arranged to meet at his next stop after New York.
They eventually returned back to London, where Newt was immediately given notice of his travel ban. But it wasn’t too hard for the pair, as they had rescued many creatures on their travels and spent most of the day caring for them.
With so much time spent together, they became close friends. Newt wasn’t sure what kind of person, other than persistent, (Y/N) was, and he was happy to have found out she was more of a homebody like him. Although, he did think she was much more stubborn than he was.
And with their close friendship and the help of the very descriptive wizard papers, (Y/N) knew pretty well what had transpired in New York. Newt regretted going into detail about the events because of her constant teasing about Tina and him, once she found out his feelings for the auror. What Newt hadn’t noticed, was that the teasing had gradually stopped to the point he was the first one to bring up the topic of the auror.
Returning from his thoughts, Newt walked up the set of stairs to see the kelpie neighing contently and rub up against (Y/N)’s wet frame. She threw him a thankful smile as he cast a drying spell on her clothes.
“So, any exciting news? ” She asked, petting the kelpie with adoration. “Did the meeting with the council go well? Did they repeal your travel ban?”
“Credence is alive.” He responded, making her pause. Newt had told her he had a feeling they were wanting to talk to him again about the events in New York.
“Where is he? I thought he died after New York.” Her brows furrowed in confusion, slightly worried.
“He’s in Paris apparently, trying to find his family. And they wanted me to find and kill him.” He fisted tightly around the bucket he was holding, out of frustration.
(Y/N) couldn’t understand the Ministry. Yes, Credence may be dangerous, but it was because of Grindelwald and his manipulation on the boy. And since Credence did not choose the path of destruction and wasn’t ‘evil’, the Ministry would be asking Newt to take an innocent life.
The kelpie, satisfied at her petting, neighed happily at (Y/N) before diving back into the depths of its water. Absentmindedly she she started out into the water, asking, “Why are they trying to kill the poor boy, and why ask you out of all people? Your response should be obvious, no?.”
Newt had wondered the same thing coming back from the meeting. “Well, my brother thought having the council ask me in person would change my mind somehow.” He then thought back to Leta. Perhaps his brother also thought her presence could persuade him.
“So how is she?” she mumbled, trying to sound nonchalant. She wasn’t sure what her feelings were to the man in front of her, yet. After the news of the travel ban, and living in the same house (different beds of course), she wasn’t too keen on bringing up Tina or Leta. Not that she had ill feelings towards them, but the look on Newt’s face when she brought up either name began to bring her mood down.
“I suppose she’s doing well.” She winced at his voice laced with small sadness. Newt didn’t delve deep into his friendship with his soon to be sister-in-law, back at Hogwarts, but it wasn’t hard to figure out the details of the parts unspoken.
Personally, she didn’t know the woman well enough to have an opinion. But if she were to form one, based on the anecdotes from Newt and the recent engagement in the papers, she wasn’t too fond of the Lestrange. She imagined that Leta knew of Newt’s feelings for her, and in turn she probably had feelings for him as well. And if both were to be true, it wasn’t the smartest decision to be engaged to his brother. But she was just an outsider looking in on their complicated relationship. Newt didn’t need to have her two cents on the matter.
Newt’s following words were brought to her attention “-was being followed.”
“Wait, what? Why would they? You already turned down their generous offer.” Sarcasm dripping from her voice.
“Well, perhaps it had to do with the impromptu meeting with Dumbledore. He would like for me to go as well, although for an entirely different reason. He wants me to go save Credence.”
Her ears perked up at the mention of Dumbledore. “You have to go then. You have Professor Dumbledore’s stamp of approval.” She paused before adding, “And as your right-hand woman, I obviously have to go along with you!” She exclaimed, her mind already wandering off, making a list of what needed to be done before they could leave.
“(Y/N), I can’t go. And you definitely are not going.” He returned back to counting all the baby nifflers to make sure none of them had escaped again.
“And why not? A ban has never stopped you before.” Crossing her arms over her chest she stood in objection to Newt’s response.
“I don’t choose sides. If I were to go to Paris, I would have to eventually choose a side. I cannot do that.”
“Newt, I love that you like to remain neutral and be a peacekeeper. But we can’t just do nothing!” She raised her voice a little at him, getting worked up at his explanation. “One side wants to eradicate him. The other wants to use him as a pawn. Going to Paris and trying to save Credence is not choosing either side. We have the opportunity to stop this right now, and I, for one, can’t do nothing. If we don’t, people are going to die.” Newt shook his head at her logic.
But before it could turn into a huge dispute in front of the niffler cage, a crash sounded upstairs and both looked to each other in confusion.
“Were you expecting someone?” she asked.
“Not at all.”
*(A/N: I wrote this story as a fanfic with an oc rather than an imagine. So if it sounds a little weird in places it might just be that I just went through the story and replaced my oc’s name is (Y/N). Also, let me know if you want the next part! Idk if anyone reads my stuff so.)

The Golden Bridle (1/2)
@ofhealinglove Hey, remember that selkie ask you wanted to see? I tried. It’s not selkies, but it is a MadaSaku and hopefully that’s good enough.
Sakura knew what it felt like to snap a neck. Some would say she was intimately familiar with the technique after a dozen decades of living cursed. She knew the pressure and swiftness required to cut a life short. The fact that the creature between her hands was only two and half feet with ears longer than her face didn’t change a thing. She could snap a brownie’s neck just as fast as a man’s.
“You know who I am, don’t you?” she sighed easily.
“Down, down, down,” the dirty humanoid creature chanted, fear making his eyes color brightly.
“The bounty, friend. You’ve been running for the wrong gang too many years and now it’s time to pay up.” Sakura eased her thumbs up over the sides of the brownie’s face. Her smile turned cruel. “So, pay.”
The chittering pitched higher as the creature panicked, but Sakura didn’t flinch. It scratched and flailed but she didn’t move. Her hold was iron for as long as it needed to be.
The brownie stopped fighting in her hands. A moment later the illusion he had been holding up melted away. Sakura grinned at the revealed secret passage, happy enough to drop the magical creature and let him scamper away.
Sakura let her hips swagger a bit as she skipped throat the ruined illusion, singing to herself. The room was familiar the way chain restaurants were familiar. Sakura had never been in that exact room before, but plenty of hoarding wizards had the same style when it came to decorating their treasure rooms.
Sakura picked her way through, recognizing some items for their magical importance, and others for their monetary value. Boots that traveled seven leagues, a short table that never ran out of food, a sack that held the calvary of a long dead kingdom…yes, she recognized a good number of the items.
“He’s terrible,” Sakura sighed aloud. “No wonder the bounty is so high. This stuff belongs to….” Sakura started to count off names in her head and frowned when she only came up with six. “Well, I know where most of it goes. Too bad only one person was willing to pay me for it.”
Not caring for the older collectors who had suffered theft and were unwilling to contract her to retrieve their stolen items, Sakura made her way through the mounds of loot until she found the diamond encrusted egg that hid the spirit of a wizard caught scrying on someone he shouldn’t have. The poor wizards’s wife was only too willing to fund anyone competent enough to retrieve her scatterbrained husband.
“And now to take something for myself,” Sakura mused aloud, pocketing the egg and staring out across the room for something interesting. It was a habit, to always pinch a little extra in case the employer renegade on payment. That hadn’t happened in years, but the ritual stuck.
Sakura came across a corner that reeked of abjuration magic.
“This is either terrible or wonderful,” Sakura breathed, cracking open a chest and reaching inside.
Her hand hit something soft and warm. She grabbed it tight and yanked it free, unfolding a gray seal skin that still smelled like the sea. A Selki’s pelt.
“Not worth much,” she huffed aloud, shouldering it to look again inside the chest.
She felt the cold touch of magic and yanked on what felt like a rope. A golden lead followed her hand out, but instead of attaching to a bridle, the lead unwound endlessly, indicating that the creature on the other end was miles away, doing the master’s bidding.
She took both the golden lead and the pelt, but also helped herself to a magic mirror that showed the past ‘through the eyes of the lowest among us.’ Sakura guessed by the etching of the rats on the back, what sort of vantage the mirror would offer.
With her bounty in toe, Sakura set off to collect her payment from a grieving wife and then deal with her own business. She was sure in time she’d be able to find the owner of the seal skin, but the easiest thing to do next would be to follow the golden lead and see where it ended.
So that’s what she did.
With the money from her recovery and the seal pelt both locked safely away, Sakura found the free time to follow the never ending lead as it took her from city to town, to village, to the dark moor of a fallen fae king. The muck came up to her ankles, but she walked on top of most of it, kicking her way through in her wet boots until the lead ended.
Sakura whistled low and snapped her wrist, sending a ripple down the length of gold until it smacked the side of the malnourished beast of burden. She had seen ponies and she had seen workhorses, but a Kelpie was neither of those things.
The black water horse looked up at her through a shaggy tangle of even darker hair, with red eyes too dim to scare even children. Sakura could count his ribs for how far they stood out and it made her grimace. There were scars around his fetlocks, criss crossing all the way up to his knees. The scars made her gut roll.
Sakura hopped off the lip of a grass mound and began to wade through the shallow waters, too low to drown in. When she was close enough the Kelpie drew his head back and whined low. In spite of the torture, his eyes were back to burning red when he saw who she was.
“You’re not him,” he rumbled. His voice was ancient and echoed of a time before the fae fell pray to men’s magic. He was one of the old monsters, she guessed.
“I’m not, but I have his magic bridle because I’m more powerful and better looking. My name’s Sakura. Who are you?”
The dark horse glanced down at the gold lead coiled up in her hand and bowed his head, glaring up resentfully through his bangs. “I am Madara. What do you wish of me…master?”
Sakura made a sour face, scrunching up the skin around her mouth and nose. “Ew. No, none of that. Quit it, I’m not like that bastard. Just stay still for now and don’t try to eat me because it won’t go well for you if you try. Hang on…”
Sakura closed the distance between them and reached up for where the bridle latched together. There were two places she had to open, but once they were loose she pulled the rest down off his long face. The golden lead dissolved from the extinguished magic and Sakura cradled the rest of the bridle in both hands, holding it while the gold light of its enchantment dimmed.
“There,” Sakura breathed. “All better?”
The Kelpie had been painfully still since she first reached for his face, but even after dragging the bridle off he stayed like stone. The one eye she could see was blown wide, and the whites around the dancing red pupil made her think he was in shock.
Sakura brushed the hair of his face back, combing with her nails and dragging them through the muck that still clung to him. She tisked at the filth and snapped her wrist to fling it off her fingers.
“He really didn’t even try to take care of you, did he? I’m sure you’ll do better,” she said.
Sakura stepped back and threw the bridle over her shoulder. There were enough grassy patches to pick her way up the slope that lead back to the footpath she had followed. It had taken her the better part of a day to follow the lead, but she didn’t tire like other humans, so she didn’t mind it when she realized it would be past midnight before she saw the lights of man’s world.
“Wait!”
Sakura looked back and saw the Kelpie had finally moved.
“You, what do you want of me?” he asked, sounding almost frantic.
“Try not to eat any children I guess. Someone will come to kill you if you go back to drowning humans, but there is plenty to feed on in the fae wilds.” Sakura snapped her fingers and then made her hand into a gun shape that she wagged in his direction. She paired the gesture with a sloppy, lazy smile. “That’s just some free advice though.”
“You can’t command me anymore. Why are you telling me this?” He stomped a single hoof, still sounding agitated. There was frantic magic all around him too.
“I just told you, silly, its free advice not a command. I knew what I was doing when I took this off of you. I’m not stupid,” she scoffed.
His eyes were still wide. “Then why?”
Sakura didn’t like the way he watched her, so she turned around and started to head back. When she answered it was a shout over her shoulder. “I don’t like seeing things chained up. Don’t think too much about it.” She waved a hand up in the air, hoping he saw it. “Have a happy life!”
He didn’t follow her, though she heard him climb out of the mud pit and stamp around on the road behind her for a ways. Eventually he stopped before the moors could, and let her go through the mists that uncurled around dusk. It was nearly dawn by the time she made it back to the apartment and by then she was barely awake enough to shower and dress for bed.
She fell asleep just before dawn and slept until noon.
Hunger was what eventually drove her out of bed. With her refrigerator empty, she forced herself to dress and sniff out enough human money for a good meaty midday meal from her favorite pub down the street.
It was a dark day outside, but she didn’t mind the shade the way some others did. Before she could make it to the pub the rains rolled in and she ended up nearly drenched by the time she arrived.
“No umbrella?” the owner laughed at her, face red with cheer and ale.
“Who owns an umbrella?” Sakura snapped back, shedding her jacket and snapping most of the rain water from it before hanging it up by the door. “I was told you just needed to dodge the raindrops.”
“Then what happened to you little miss?” he laughed back, already pouring her a frothing stout to go along with her meal. There was bread ready for her to butter next to her usual seat at the bar.
“I didn’t see the point in it, since I figured I was coming here to get sloshed anyway.”
Someone at the far end of the bar raised his stein and laughed, saluting her before staining his beard with froth. The pub owner chuckled and dipped away to prepare her chicken the way she liked it.
Sakura leaned back and tore through the bread, knowing it wouldn’t be enough to fill her, but loving the taste of it all the same. There was a television mounted up in the back with football reruns playing. It was still exciting enough to entertain a few of the regulars.
Sakura did a sweep of the room, noting only a few new faces. Most everyone else was a regular. Some seemed to live at The Angel’s Trumpet Pub and Meals.
One of the faces belonged to someone she had never seen before, and that was rare because Sakura was just paranoid enough to spend whole days watching the world through pub windows until she was sure she had memorized enough of the township to tell locals apart from interlopers. Sakura drank deep and then called for a second once her first mug ran dry.
Her plates of food came out, one after the other, and she ate through the first one before she noticed the staring of the stranger. Yamato was working behind the counter so she waved him down and then asked him for a pale ale to be served at the stranger’s table. If he knew who it came from she’d risk an encounter. If he didn’t…well, it wasn’t like she was worried or anything.
She was halfway through her second plate and fourth drink when he settled into the seat beside her. Sakura drank deep and then reached for another roll before sliding the empty basket down to Yamato’s end to fill up again. She tore open the biscuit with her teeth and watched the dark stranger.
He was taller than her, like most men were, with wild black hair barely braided back. His eyes were just as dark as the rest of him and his clothes were timeless trousers and a loose white shirt rolled up his forearms enough to expose the criss crossing scars.
“Oh, you,” Sakura breathed, feeling some of the lingering tension ease out. “Human you. Hey, nice look.”
Madara inclined his head and the picked up the ale, gesturing to it before taking a long pull. When he set it back down half of it was gone.
Sakura whistled low.
“What’s brought you out into the people places?” Sakura teased. She bit off another chunk of her roll. “I thought you’d be eager to see the wilds. There’s nothing keeping you back is there?”
She asked it like a question but it really wasn’t a question. The enchantment was null and void, but Madara had been a prisoner for so long, he probably forgot what it felt like to be free.
“I am considering it. I had some other matters of business to attend to and a few questions I was hoping you could answer,” Madara said, watching her.
Sakura finished her last roll and reached for her drink. “Sure. What can I do for you?”
“The magician you took the bridle from. He….?”
Sakura made a gesture with her finger under her throat and then winked. “You won’t have to worry about him. It’s just his hold out minions who are a pain in the ass. You not worried about them, are ya?”
Madara shook his head slowly.
“What else can I help you with?”
“The bridle, how did you come to possess it?” Madara asked.
“It wasn’t doing him any good where it was. I was looking for something else but after I found it I picked up a few other trinkets for myself and I have….issues? Yeah, I guess you could call them issues. No yeah, I have issues with binding magic like yours so I picked up the bridle when I found it and then just followed it to you.”
“Why?”
Sakura made a face like she didn’t understand the question, so Madara leaned forward and asked again.
“Why did you bother to free me?”
“Why not?”
He blinked, pulling back to see her better. Sakura skipped over the fork and picked at the chicken with her fingers and tore through it the same way she tore through her bread, not caring if he saw her make a mess.
“You are an odd human,” he finally concluded.
“I’ve been called worse.”
“You know I am dangerous. You would say I am a monster, no?”
Sakura rolled her eyes, wiping her mouth with the back of her wrist as she leaned back on her stool. “Sure, yeah, I guess I can agree with that. Your kind has been known to eat kids, on occasion, but that’s rare, from what I know. You prefer animal to human, yes? Can’t blame you for that. I’d be a hypocrite,” Sakura laughed and held up what was left of her chicken.
“You still risked it. What if I had been a terrible creature locked away with good reason? Would you still have freed me as you did?”
Madara was still watching her and his voice made her want to bed down and sleep, it was so soft and smooth. She knew it wasn’t intentional. She had listened to enough thralls and fought off enough mind altering enchantments to know when she was being manipulated. Madara’s voice was just pleasant and there wasn’t anything more to it than that.
“Madara.”
She called his name to get his attention. When she spoke his name aloud the Kelpie sat up straighter in his seat and went rigid. She thought it reminded her of how work dogs stood at attention when their masters called. Something in her stomach rolled unpleasantly when she thought how long the abjuration magic must of lasted. There was nobility in his beautiful features. She didn’t doubt Orochimaru spent decades breaking him.
“Look, the guy I stole your bridle from was a horrible guy. He was…one of the worst humans I have ever had the misfortune of running across. I’ve known plenty of bad guys, and he was one of the worst. There’s nothing good that comes from shackles and slavery. Even if you had been the world’s worst monster, I would have wanted to free you, even if just to kill you. It’s just who I am. It’s my epic flaw, if you will,” she laughed. “If I’m free to do as I please, I’d free you again, no questions asked.”
“But…why?”
His eyes were full of questions, but they all hinged on that single word.
Sakura drained what was left of her drink and reached into her pockets for the thick wad of bills. She counted out enough to be generous for both her portion and Madara’s.
“Look, it’s just who I am, friend. Don’t think too much about it.”
Sakura threw the bills down and grabbed what was left of her chicken to swallow whole, bones and all. Her eyes gleamed bright for a moment more before she exhaled comfortably. Madara turned in his seat to watch her as she headed towards the door. She waved her hand up in the air behind her. “Have a happy life.”
She didn’t know if he would be at the Angel’s Trumpet if she went back, but Sakura didn’t risk it for the next week as she ran back and forth, paying favor for favor as she tried to hunt down new treasures and clues.
Orochimaru had plenty of spawns that were still slithering out from the cracks left in his grave, and as strong as Sakura was, she wasn’t eager to wrestle with any of them. She heard that she had pissed off some of them, and they were even more of a headache to deal with when pissed off.
But eventually the days passed, one after the other. And then the weeks passed. Sakura forgot about the kelpie and remember her hunger.
It was raining again when she stepped in and slapped her jacket in mid air, freeing it from excess rainwater. She left it on the hook by the door and waved to Yamato at the bar, taking her usual seat.
Sakura scanned the room for new and old faces, but only recognized all she saw.
“Looking for someone you missed?”
Sakura cradled her head in her hand, leaning over the counter. Yamato offered her a basket of bread to pick out of, but Sakura took the entire basket from his hands.
“You’re too observant for your own good,” she grumbled.
“The trees have eyes,” Yamato laughed, wiggling his fingers in her direction while backing up to return to the kitchens.
“Go live in a forest, green man!” Sakura hollered. She bit into her bread and then swallowed. “And bring me a beer while you’re at it.”
Yamato reemerged a moment later with a plate for someone else, but got her drink from the tap before she could complain a second time. Before she could have the first sip, Yamato tugged it back out of her reach and leaned in.
“What?” Sakura growled, feeling more irritated than usual. She had stayed away too long, she missed her comfort food and was cranky for it. Freedom had spoiled her.
“Tell me I’m your favorite wood kin,” Yamato teased, holding her drink just out of reach.
“And why would I do something like that?”
“Because it’s true.” Yamato’s grin was suspicious.
“Doesn’t mean I’d admit it. I’d break Hashirama’s heart.”
Sakura grabbed for her drink but Yamato was persistent. One of the drunk regulars lifted his head out of his arms long enough to whistle at them before his head fell back. A couple more men laughed but for the most part Yamato’s antics went ignored.
“You’ve been terrible. If someone asked me what ungrateful looked like I’d show them a picture of you. On top of being a hold out you’re also unfaithful. Weren’t we supposed to be bosom buddies?”
Sakura curled her lip in annoyance. “I swear, I think I might have to decapitate you again if you don’t give me my drink.”
“I’d just grow it back,” Yamato teased, knowing that he could survive losing his head the way all Green Men and wood kin could.
“It’s still hurt like a bitch though, so hand the drink over. I’m hangry.”
Yamato relented and let her have her drink before pushing off the counter. “Fine, be that way. I gave you a chance, just remember that. The cook will bring you your food, not me.”
Sakura flipped him the bird and Yamato saw it, but he just smiled wide at her in a way that made her stomach lurch. He was a tricky bastard. What was he planning?
“If your food sucks I’ll never come back here,” Sakura hollered down the bar.
Yamato laughed. “As if you could.”
Sakura tore into a new roll and then drank deep from her beer. She and Yamato had known each other too long and been through too much to get along so well, but at the same time there were few who understood Sakura as well as Yamato, who had been a child broken by Orochimaru’s mad schemes. She hadn’t been the victim of another human, but she understood Yamato better than most.
Which is why her stomach refused to settle.
“Maybe I should just chop off a leg this time,” Sakura muttered to herself. She tilted her glass back and the empty bottom greeter her. She set it down when she heard her dinner on the counter, excitement building as the aroma hit her.
But it wasn’t the food she noticed first.
“Oh, it’s you!” she exclaimed, leaning back. His memory came to her mind a second later. “Madara, right?”
The newly freed Kelpie was wearing a chief’s uniform and had his hair braided back more neatly than the last time she remembered seeing him.
He spoke with an easy smile. “You remembered my name, Sakura.”
“Hang on, something is more important right now,” Sakura exclaimed.
He went still to watch her as Sakura tugged her steak closer to stab at it with her fork and knife. She cut a piece away, watching him wearily as she chewed. A second later her serious expression melted into a smile and she nodded.
“Okay, now we can talk. You made a good steak, I don’t have to hate you.”
His eyes seemed to twinkle as the corners creased along with his smile. “That would have been unfortunate. I might have lost my job here if I couldn’t prepare a decent steak.”
“It’s more than just decent. You’re not in any danger,” Sakura said before taking another forkful. “So what are you doing here, other than making decent steak?”
“Apparently one needs money in order to afford goods and services in this world.”
“Sucks, man,” Sakura sighed. “But aside from that, what are you still doing on this side? You could cross over to the fae wilds, can’t you? That place is pretty desolate, you wouldn’t have to worry too much about if you went all natural over there.”
“But you live here,” he said. “In this world.”
Sakura nodded. “Yeah,I do, but this is where most humans live. I’m a badass, but I’m not anything extra special when it comes to species.”
Madara nodded along, watching her while she ate. “I realized that pretty early on. I was curious why you would encourage me to travel to the fae realms. You didn’t seem the type to enjoy trapping into realms not suited to your kind.”
He couldn’t have known about her past, so she chose not to bristle at the suggestion.
“I avoid the fae places almost enterally if I can help it,” she laughed. “I’ve spent enough lifetimes over there to grow sick of it, trust me. Plus, the food and drink are incomparable. Have you had much human food yet? It has real taste!”
Madara offered to take her glass for a refill and she happily passed it off for him. He spoke while operating the tap. “I’ve enjoyed much of what I’ve tried so far. I don’t think it will be hard to adapt to life here. You enjoy this pub, don’t you?”
“I love it. I’ve been coming here for years. You’re lucky to have a job in such a fun place. If Yamato ever gives you too much trouble tell me and I’ll throttle him for ya.”
Her words made him laugh as he handed her drink back over. Sakura accepted it with a nod of thanks and a salute before tipping it back to wash her throat. She wondered if he would be heading back into the kitchens soon, or if he was on break, since he didn’t look like he had any intention of leaving.
“He’s been nothing but amicable,” Madara assured her, referring to Yamato.
“Well, at least he’s nice to one of us!” Sakura hollered. From across the room Yamato hear her and looked up. His smile was wide and far too devious for her liking. She flipped him off again and then took another drink. “The cheep bastard is just a right asshole to me most of the time.”
“I was under the impression that Yamato thought highly of you. He shared with me some stories about how you know each other. You were very helpful in liberating him and his kind at one point.”
Sakura blinked before it occurred to her that Madara and Yamato shared a common enemy. Madara had been trapped by the golden bridle found in Orochimaru’s belonging, while Yamato had been the result of a direct experiment involving humans and wood kin magic. Both men must have been able to bond over their hatred of Orochimaru.
“I hope he didn’t tell you too many stories about me,” Sakura groaned. “He must have bored you.”
“No, I asked specifically for more information on the human that saved me and he didn’t ask for anything in return. You just left and I thought I could work here and wait until you came back, but that was many days ago now.”
Sakura took a bread roll and used it to wipe up what was left of her meat’s juices. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know you still had questions for me. I guess I could have been more helpful if you really do plan on living in the human’s realm.”
“Well, this is where you live,” Madara said, sounding like it was the most obvious thing in the world to comment on. He pat at something at his waist and then reached into the pocket of his pants. “But it was good that you stayed away so long, I think, since this took a while to earn.”
“Oh?” Sakura was puzzled by what Madara seemed to be implying. In the far corner Yamato was wiping down at table while watching them. He wasn’t even trying to be subtle and it irked her.
“Here, this is for you,” Madara said, setting a small velvet box on the counter.
Sakura wiped her hands on her jeans under the bar, frowning at the box. It looked familiar but she couldn’t tell from where. It wouldn’t be the first time a freed or rescued creature thanked her with a token, but the box was weirding her out.
When she glanced up at Madara he seemed too transfixed on her every movement, watching her with midnight black eyes that sparkled like something from a distant midnight.
Sakura reached for the box and cracked it open. It unfolded to show off a pretty gold band with a diamond in the center. It made her stomach flip when she recognized it.
“Madara, this is an engagement ring,” she chuckled nervously. Yamato was in the back, watching with the widest smile imaginable. “This is too much.”
“I thought it would be appropriate to do things according to human customs as well, since you are also human.” Madara’s smile spread and the twinkling of his eyes was almost boyish. “I didn’t know that there was such a thing until Yamato told me.”
Sakura didn’t know if she wanted to laugh or scream, but she knew her neck was itchy and her face was hot as the handsome kelpie creature watched her with an intensity that was all too recognizable. “But Madara, this is-this isn’t appropriate for a thank you. This is something you get for someone you want to marry.”
“I know that now. I had been wondering why you didn’t come back and I worried it was something I had missed, but Yamato explained all the customs to me. They’re a little different from Kelpi custom, but you don’t have to worry about those anymore. You already gave me my freedom so there’s nothing else to do.”
Sakura could drink any old man under the table, but after only two beers she was starting to feel the room spin.
“Madara…do you think we’re married?”
“Almost,” he breathed, blushing only slightly. “But I hope the human customs won’t take much longer.”
Sakura leaned back in her seat, away from the bar and the box with the ring. Madara didn’t look away and the intensity of his stare was making her feel like the room was the deck of a ship in a storm. Everything rocked and he was still too handsome to look at.
“I thought that was-I didn’t think you guys did that anymore. Only the really old fashioned selkies would-would still do ‘event’ marriages. Is this normal for kelpie?”
“It’s quite common. Potential spouses would try to bind their love or catch their potential mate, only to ‘free’ them from their singleness. I’ll admit my freeing was a little unorthodox, but I couldn’t have been happier with my match. I don’t want anyone else but you. I’me dedicated to only you!”
Madara reached across the bar and grabbed for her hands, securing her wrists first and sliding down until her hands were trapped in his. He pulled her closer and kissed her knuckles.
“Madara…” Sakura couldn’t find her voice.
“Don’t worry, love, I promise you we can take it slow until the wedding, but I’m so happy you chose me.” He angled his face so that he stared up at her through his heavy lashes. A few stray bangs fell out from the braid, framing his face. He seemed impossibly beautiful and she couldn’t help but panic as he loomed closer, shadowing her with the blush still high on his cheeks. He kissed her fingers again before breathing over them. “Don’t expect me to hold back from now on.”
Madara looked so lovestruck and in that moment all of Yamato’s evil grinning in the background made sense.

let the only sound be the overflow
I regret to inform the entire party that Calia Stormbreaker is, in fact, in a committed triad. But have some fic! cc: @theherocomplex (Bee encouraged this, blame her) @nightingaleseeking @mickleburger @thievesguilding @snuffes @wolverineproportions
the ocean is big and we are not
Warm morning sunlight falls through the small windows, casting patterns onto her skin. She shifts, digging her bare feet underneath the blankets. Edal reaches out and slowly twirls a red ringlet around his finger, marveling – not for the first time – at the contrast of the red of her hair against the teal of his skin.
Her shirt slides up as she stretches, revealing the tentacles tattooed across her torso. The head of the octopus is on her lower back, but the tentacles intertwine with seaweed and kelp, dodging – or perhaps chasing, he’s never asked – the school of fish swimming up her ribs. With a small, sleepy noise, she turns over, hugging her pillow underneath her head. He gentle pulls his finger from her hair and instead trails it down her spine.
The ship creaks below them and a light gust of wind comes through the window, catching in her hair, lifting the ends to flutter in the wind that disappears as quickly as it arrived. Her skin glitters copper in the sun, but the black ink of her tattoos seems to swallow the light. He traces the kraken swimming up her arm and across her shoulders.
He’s always wondered the story behind the kraken – five years together like this, ten years crewmates, and he hasn’t seen it yet – but never asked. They’re all allowed their secrets. He’s watched her other tattoos flash gold right before she shifts, in the split second before she dives in the water. He’s watched new ones appear on her skin, watched the pain and contortion of her first change into a new form – so unlike Kelpie’s seamless shift into anything that swims – watched her small smile as she traces the new image on her skin.
She pulled the kraken from somewhere, for some reason. She pulled it into herself, transformed into it. She was the kraken.
He’s sailed across most of the Dragovar Ocean. The biggest things he’s seen are kraken. That Calia once felt the need to become one – whether for fun or for survival – has always slightly unnerved him.
“I can feel you staring,” she murmurs, half-muffled by the pillow.
“It’s a nice view,” he grins.
She pulls the pillow out from under her head and throws it in his general direction. Edal laughs and settles it between them.
Outside and above, he hears the crew shouting for the ladder.
Calia flips over and grabs the pocketwatch dangling from a hook above their bed. She flicks it open and then glares up at the ceiling and the deck above it. “About time,” she mutters, closing the watch and letting it drop. It clinks against the wood a few times. She yawns.
“She belongs in the ocean,” he reminds her.
“It’s been fourteen hours,” she says. "The ocean is big and we are not.”
It’s the captain speaking now, even half-naked with sleep-tousled hair. He doesn’t argue, as much because she’s the captain as because she’s right. But he, too, feels the urge to dive down into the deep. To float amongst the kelp forests, to allow water to pass through his gills, to kick down, down, down to the sandy bottom, to look upward and not see the surface.
Calia has saltwater running through her veins. She is of the sea. But she does not belong to it.
They do.
There’s a splash and then one of his favorite voices amidst the others. Too quiet to hear her words, but enough to know she’s back, safe and sound, on the Courtland.
Calia sits up and takes a swig from her canteen. She’s due on deck in a few minutes – even the captain takes watch in the crow’s nest, one of her rules – but that’s a few minutes from now. Edal reaches out and grabs her around her waist, tugging her back down amidst tangled sheets and blankets.
She makes an undignified noise and some of her water sloshes out of the canteen and onto her skin. It glistens in the sun and he trails his finger through it, drawing delicate designs before it evaporates. She squirms out of his reach, stealing her arm out of his grasp for herself, and screws the lid back on her canteen before hanging it on its hook next to her watch. Then, without any protest at all, she settles back next to him. The water drips down her collarbone and between her breasts. He follows it with his finger.
The door opens. Calia looks up over his shoulder. "Anything interesting?" She'll be captain later, when Kelpie hasn't just shifted back after fourteen hours and still isn't quite sure how legs are meant to work.
Kelpie slides into bed between them, tangling her legs with theirs. "Nothing that can't wait," she murmurs around a yawn and nestles her head on the pillow Calia threw at him.
Edal coasts his hand over her pale skin, such a contrast to him and Calia. She catches his hand in hers and tugs it around her. The small movement causes her skin to catch in the light. As much as Calia's glitters copper, Kelpie's skin shimmers iridescent, mother of pearl. The inside of an oyster in the summer sun.
He presses a kiss to her shoulder and takes a breath. She smells of the sea. Of home.
A trickle of seawater flows out from her gills and she coughs as her body adjusts to breathing air again. He squeezes her hand. There are many terrible things about leaving the water behind; remembering how to breathe the dryness of air is one of them. Her soft fingertips brush across the webbing between his fingers as she clasps his hand. She reaches out and settles her other hand on Calia's chest, resting on the dolphin cresting across her breast.
"I have to go," Calia says, carding her fingers through Kelpie's platinum hair. Her few minutes are past gone, which means he's due on deck shortly as well. Still, she stays in bed, drawing invisible patterns on Kelpie's skin. Her patterns travel over him as well, connecting loops and swirls over two of her loves.
The sea is the fourth in their triad, the greatest love of them all. Kelpie could swim away and never return and they wouldn't blame her. He could dive so far that up and down ceased to have meaning, that the surface became a fleeting memory, and they wouldn't blame him.
Calia could sail into the sunset, leaving them both behind to the deep, and they wouldn't blame her.
With a sigh, Calia sits up, letting Kelpie’s hand fall to the bed. She presses a kiss to her cheek, and then his, and slips out of bed. Legs long used to seas much rougher than the calm waves of today, she stands steadier than any land dweller he’s ever met. She dresses quickly – only the tips of the kraken’s tentacles peek out over her shirt, somehow swallowing more of the sun now than they did before s– loops the pocketwatch onto its place hanging from her belt, whispers a reminder that his shift started three minutes ago, and leaves to captain her ship. The door closes behind her, but not before he sees her settle her hat atop her head.
She doesn’t look back and there’s no regret in her posture.
The open water sings its siren's song to them all, above and below.

Chapter 11: A Home Visit
I never realise how much I like being home unless I’ve been somewhere really different for a while. Juno MacGuff, Juno
As they drove out of the Glasgow suburbs and into the countryside, the clouds lifted and the sun shone out of a perfectly blue sky. They had not spoken much since Jamie picked Claire up and dumped her overnight bag in the back of the car next to his rucksack, walking boots and walking poles. Somehow, the silence between them wasn’t awkward. It seemed calm and peaceful, as though they had no need to fill it with meaningless chatter.  As Claire’s hand rested on Jamie’s thigh, she turned to gaze at him, admiring his chiselled profile, high cheekbones and full lips. She thrilled at the thought that he was hers and happy to be so.
Jamie briefly turned his head to Claire as her cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
“What ye staring fer, Sassenach? Have I got food on ma face?”
“No, sorry. I was just wondering, can we have the roof down?”
Jamie smiled and pressed a button. As the roof retracted, swirls of wind invaded the car, whipping Claire’s hair into a Medusa-like tangle of curls.
“I hadn't really thought this through!” Claire shouted, pulling the hair from her mouth.
“What?” Jamie yelled back as he pushed the car faster.
Eventually, the car began to slow as Jamie pulled into a picnic area at the side of the road. He laughed as Claire frantically ran her fingers through her hair, wincing as she pulled at the tangled mass. He leaned over and kissed the top of her head before climbing out of the car.
“Look at this, Sassenach, just look around ye. Have ye ever seen anywhere more beautiful? On my way hame, I always stop here. Just tae take in the scene. The peaks, the waterfalls, everything. Doesna matter what the weather is… sunny and the colours sae bright, or grey wi’ great dramatic clouds. It doesna matter. Ye must have been here afore, aye?”
Claire moved around to join Jamie.
“Oh yes, quite a few times… Frank’s area of expertise at the university was the various Jacobite risings, so he’d come up here to Glencoe many times...”
She turned to face him, noticing the unconscious look of distaste that passed over his face at the mention of Frank’s name. “But we never really stopped to look around. Frank was not an outdoor kind of guy.”
Jamie headed back to the car. “Come on then. I want tae get ye hame tae Lallybroch.”
With the roof of the car firmly in place (“I am not turning up to meet your father looking like something the cat dragged in, James Fraser!”), the drive to Lallybroch continued. Up through Fort William and Fort Augustus to the lower reaches of Loch Ness, then alongside the Loch to the instantly recognisable sight of Urquhart Castle, where Jamie veered from the main road to a series of smaller roads.
Claire had visited Fort William and Fort Augustus in the past, had even gone as far north as Inverness and Culloden, but those journeys had inevitably been accompanied by details of the quashing of Highland uprisings, English army manoeuvres and a way of life condensed into a series of bloody statistics. All delivered with Frank’s characteristically detached manner. This journey was very different. Jamie recounted a stream of stories about the areas they passed through. Some true historical events, some fanciful myths, their origins lost in time, but all delivered with the passion and pride of the Highlander with an accent becoming more pronounced the further north they travelled.
“Tell me about Lallybroch.” Claire prompted as Jamie finished his tale of kelpies.
“Och, weel, the family ha’ lived there for nigh on three hundred years. Da still lives there, wi’ Murtagh, who’s a cousin and looks after the production side of the distillery. Since Mam died, and Jenny and I moved tae Glasgow, the hoose is tae big fer them, but they willna move. There’s always been Frasers at Lallybroch, he says, and he willna be the last. No’ even the English redcoats could force the Frasers tae leave. Ye can still see the marks of the English swords in the door frames … always there tae remember.”
“Oh dear, will I be welcome do you think? Or should I practice my Scottish accent?”
“Dinna mock,” Jamie chided gently. “‘Twas a long time ago. Besides...”
His lips made a lopsided smile as he reached out and squeezed her knee reassuringly.
“Ye may be a sassenach, but ye’re my sassenach and ye’ll always be welcome in our hame.”
Eventually, they pulled off the road and onto a short drive and Claire caught her first glimpse of Lallybroch. While not huge, it was certainly much larger than the average family home, spread over three floors with, Claire was sure, attics and cellars in addition. An imposing grey stone house, designed for function rather than beauty, built to withstand the fiercest of Scottish weather and hostile visitors. And it was home for Jamie. Claire had never had that attachment to one place. The flats and houses that she had shared with her uncle had all been nice, but they had always moved to the next without a pang of regret or sorrow.
Jamie lifted their bags out of the car and walked round to a door at the side of the house. Claire followed him through a small hallway filled with wellies, walking boots, waterproof jackets and umbrellas into a large square kitchen dominated by a huge wooden kitchen table. Jamie dropped the bags and headed for the tall American-style fridge. “Ah, Mrs Crook has left us a wee snack. It’ll be a fair while till dinner and we havena had lunch. So, how about we go and drop our bags upstairs, then we can have a wee bit of refreshment afore I show ye round.”
“Sounds like a plan to me.”
Before Claire had chance, Jamie picked up her bag and led the way out of the kitchen, down a stone floored passage and through a door into a large wood panelled hallway, with several doors off it and a large wooden staircase ascending to a first floor galleried landing.
“When ‘twas built, the kitchen was no’ fer guests,” Jamie explained as Claire looked round admiringly. “And sae the panelling and the finery ended at that door.”
He pointed to where they had come from. “Now the kitchen’s the room we use the most.”
Jamie climbed the stairs as Claire trailed behind, looking at all the family pictures on the walls. This was a place that Uncle Lamb could happily have called home. He opened one of the heavy doors on the landing. Claire stepped into a bedroom with oak furniture and a massive stone fireplace, currently unlit.
“Am I in here?” She asked.
Jamie nodded. “Aye, we’re both in here. This is ma room.”
Claire tried to imagine this room as it had been when he was a boy, full of toys and books with Lego strewn across the carpet, or when he was a teenager with posters and video games and that particular adolescent male aroma - three parts testosterone, two parts stinking sports wear and one part sheer horniness.
She wandered around, noticing the framed photographs dotted round the room, the various rosettes and silver cups and the airfix model airplanes placed on the highest shelves of the bookcase - the room of a man too old for such juvenile pastimes, yet loath to get rid of his boyhood achievements. She guessed there was probably a Nintendo N64 tucked away in some cupboard, ready to resume a Super Mario game last played in 2004.
Her attention fixed on the large bed in the centre of one wall. “Is your father OK with us both sleeping in here?”
She kicked off her sandals and primly sat on the edge.
“Sassenach, I’m thirty-two years old. I have my ain hoose. I think he kens what goes on between a man and a woman.”
Jamie pulled off his shoes and joined her, grabbing her around the waist. “Besides, I’m living oot fifteen year old Jamie’s fantasy, a bonnie woman in his bed, with a round arse jes’ made fer fondling.”
“So, I’m not going to find anything I might regret here in your room, am I? Like porn magazines or...”
“Porn mags, Sassenach?” Jamie appeared horrified. “What d’ye think I am?  There are no porn mags in this room, I promise ye... ye can get everything ye need off the internet nowadays.”
Claire playfully punched him on the shoulder. Jamie responded by drawing her closer to him.
“I dinna need porn,” he whispered, his breath hot on her neck. “I have ye… and my imagination.”
Bringing his lips to meet hers, he teased them open and his tongue ran between them. She moaned against his mouth as she felt his arms tighten around her and she met his tongue with her own, rubbing it seductively around, licking the inside of his mouth, her fingers tangling in his hair. “Claire, what ye do tae me...” he breathed as he pulled away, looking into her eyes.
She smiled and ran her hands down his back to the bottom of his shirt scraping her nails lightly over the bare skin she slowly uncovered. He moaned and closed his eyes briefly before lowering his head again and claiming her mouth. Jamie’s lips moved lightly across her cheek to her neck and he smiled as he felt her quiver in his arms. His fingertips traced her jawline as he sucked her ear lobe, loving the feel of her pressed against him, her head thrown back in pleasure. His hands slid along her body, pulling her on top of him as he sank back on to the bed.
Copying Jamie’s actions, Claire began to kiss his neck. He inhaled sharply as her warm mouth found his earlobe and nibbled at it gently. Rising up, she threw one leg over his body to straddle him. As her hands caressed the hard muscles of his arms and shoulders, she instinctively moistened her lips with her tongue. Jamie grew harder as he watched his Claire astride him, her breathing becoming more ragged as he ground his hips against her.
Jamie’s hands reached up to fondle her breasts through her t-shirt. She moaned at his touch and instinctively rolled her hips. Her hands roamed over his muscled stomach and chest as she unbuttoned his shirt.
Claire moved her head back a little and smiled at him. “What time does your dad get home?” She teased.
"Oh god, is this like a teenage makeout session then?” Jamie groaned as he began to push at her top, trying to get it off. She moved her hands down to help him, and together they removed her top and her bra.
“Kind of, although I think we may be going all the way this time.” Claire giggled as she climbed off him.
Lying next to him, she pulled off her jeans and panties. Jamie watched momentarily before quickly stripping off his own jeans and underpants. Claire ran her eyes over his naked body.  “Jamie...” she reminded. “...socks.”
There was a playful quality to their lovemaking. Laughing together as they sought each other’s mouths, limbs entwining with accidental collisions of elbows and knees, their movements together becoming more heated and urgent with every breath.
Jamie paused momentarily, and leant over the side of the bed, fumbling with his rucksack before returning to Claire, foil packet in hand. Together they eased the condom on before Jamie positioned himself and entered her. Claire’s body wrapped around him, her thighs around his waist, arms around his neck. Locked into another deep, passionate kiss, she clung to him as their moans blended together.
Their bodies grew slick with sweat as they moved in unison. Claire closed her eyes as she began to feel her orgasm wash over her. Jamie felt her tighten around him, pushing him over the edge as she cried out his name.
Still panting, Jamie rolled off Claire and lay on his side to face her.
“I need a shower now…” Claire began.
Jamie interrupted her with a gentle kiss. “Fifteen year old Jamie thanks ye, from the bottom of his heart. Better than any of his imaginings!”

So since I did that whole post on needing a spiritual Mother, some kind friends have messaged me.
One person mentioned that I look into the Morrigan because in one of her three aspects she can be matronly.
And then I remembered several years ago a friend of mine gave me a poppet doll of an Irish goddess off of Etsy. That was way back in undergrad college, and after I moved back home I kept a lot of that stuff in the basement. Long story short I was just scouring through my bins in the basement for half an hour and I found her. She’s the Morrigan!
Now, honestly, I’m ashamed to say this very kind gift was in my basement for over a year...and some paper it was stored with got a bit mildewed. The poppet itself seems like it wasn’t affected but I don’t want to take any chances.
So! I’m very thankful that I had some snowmelt water left over from the full Snow moon and some goats milk honey orange blossom soap I got for free from a nice holistic shop on my birthday. So I just gently dabbed her with the soap and water by washcloth, with a blessing intent. I guess I should’ve gone out for more snow then because I used up all my Moon water.
She also had a black cord necklace with these water horses (kelpies?) pendent. I threw out the cord and added the pendant to a strand that was leftover when I was doing my Persephone prayer beads.
And well, now here she is!
