Wasteland baby! is the most under appreciated of the Hozier albums and truly what an album to be released just before the pandemic what a song to release before the pandemic. During an uncertain time an album about not being alone in a wasteland the way most of the songs are about devotion, to the point of fault, to the point of personal harm, to the point of manipulation, about doing everything to be with this person even when it's detrimental to you both or even when it's a person you've made up in your head, in a year when we couldn’t go out and see each other. Hozier releases an album that puts the yearning for love in the loneliness of the pandemic into words a full year before the pandemic even happened and we don’t even really talk about it and that should be a crime.
True that love in withdrawal was the weepin' of me That the sound of the saw must be known by the tree
god imagine hearing that in a pandemic and not going insane.
in this essay, I will-

as shifty as they were when they were younger, at the actual age that andreil are at do you think they've got the potential to be friendly strangers? like not overly friendly but the kind of people who understand what being human is
think about it, the experience of living a sheltered life and neil is standing behind someone in the grocery line, watching them unable to scour up money for ramen and water so he pays for it to help things along
andrew watching a little kid peer into his mega expensive car of the year and the kid gets scared of him and moves aside but andrew opens the door moves back, tells the kid he can have a look its fine
do you think they would interfere by force if they ever saw something bad happening in front of them? neil on his runs stopping to help someone cross the road, feeding stray cats in alleyways, yk the people who know what struggle is and don't want it for anyone else?
idk if they're the type to shrug off injustice so easily, i feel like whatever they learnt as children is buried deep inside the caution and fear of strangers and all but maybe what wymack taught them would rise to the surface too cuz if wymack hadn't chosen to help them they wouldn't be alive either

The utter GLEE and willingness to choose violence that each of these men exhibits as soon as they pick up a tortilla, this team building exercise game was perfect, ten out of ten, no notes.

Wasteland, Baby! | March 1, 2019
"There is definitely a kind of wry smile to the work, but it takes place with a great shadow hanging over, I suppose, the end of the world kind of hanging over the album a little bit. But that is enjoyed in the best way possible."

THIS IS NOT A DRILL: Hozier played I, Carrion (Icarian) at the Austin, Texas show!!!
The fact that he played this ON THE B STAGE? IS SO VERY PRECIOUS???
plus the way that you can see how the background slowly filled up with lights from the crowd?!? What if I cried again?

Spoilers for the aftg short stories
The Betsy one broke me, cause seeing Andrew from her perspective was just so heartbreaking. Neil sees him as a person he can lean on and although as the books go on he discovers a depth to Andrew, Andrew is still portrayed as this strong, unmoving force that will protect him no matter what.
But with Betsy???? For the first time I felt how young he is and how much he struggles. There was so much raw emotion in him and I had to stop reading multiple times to look up at my ceiling. At one point I said out loud that he is just a kid.
I loved Andrew Minyard from the moment he showed up on the page in the Foxhole court (Okay, that's a lie, for a breath moment I didn't like him, but that's beside the point), but I fell in love with his character even more today. There is something so beautiful with seeing a character that you think is so strong and unbreakable from a parent figure perspective. Suddenly he is just a kid, who had to endure so much, but against all odds is still standing.
And the way he craves to not be alone in that scene? He could stand in that kitchen waiting for the milk to heat up, but he choses to sit back down. He sends Wymack away, so he could talk more freely to Betsy even though at the beginning he put him there as abetter to not have a serious conversation.
And don't even get me started on the "They all know now, Bee", like come on. Just run me over with a truck, it would hurt less.
I have so much more thoughts about this, but they are just spinning in my head and I'm incapable to write them down at this moment, maybe later.
