hbo spn storylines, drabbles, ideas, thoughts, wishlist, whatever you may call it. it’s messy, nothing makes sense and pretty sure a lot of these contradict each other

more of sam at stanford with jessica/flashbacks. jessica potentially lives but is revealed to be a demon (but she developed actual feelings for sam and really did come to care for him because a demon falling in love with a human would be SO interesting) OR she lives but her memory gets wiped like dean did to lisa OR she dies like she did but she is a ghost that haunts sam (he welcomes it but eventually he lets her go -> character arc). he still dreams about her though and he has her keepsakes with him wherever he goes, her rings, her favourite book, anything that was left of her from the fire

you have to be extremely careful when making deals with demons because they are cunning and evil creatures. they will follow the rules of the deal but will find loopholes to put some sadistic twist on the terms. you want money? of course, too bad you’ll be arrested for fraud before you can use any of it and spend the next ten years in jail before i drag you to hell. you want a perfect husband? sure he’ll love you. in fact, he’ll love you so much he’ll keep you locked up in the basement to keep you safe etc etc. saving a person often becomes the person that causes or leads to your death.

the creation of jack: after s5, when lucifer is trapped in the cage again lucifer fuses his own soul with a human soul to create jack, who escapes to earth to find sam and castiel. i have a longer post about this saved in my drafts

lucifer is trapped for good in the cage after s5 but if he was to return again, dean would kill him while sam would kill michael - this would be nice parallels and a sort of fulfillment of the “one brother must kill the other” prophecy because one brother DO kill another brother, just not their own

more azazel and how he came to the plan of how to free lucifer; opening a hell gate earlier, more experimentations with the demon blood etc

mary was infected with the blood when she was a baby, sam is the first and only second generation special child (longer post about that here)

personally, i want to see more and know more about john and mary’s relationship. when mary died, john and mary had fulfilled their destiny (having sam and dean) so does that mean that his love and dedication to mary post her death was falsely fabricated by the angels to ensure sam and dean would grow up in ideal conditions to become hunters? or maybe, after mary’s death, john wakes up from the spell with two kids he doesn’t recognize and a wife he thinks he loved, but the memories of the past years of his life are like a fever dream; he never wanted to live in a town like this nor was he interested in having kids? but here the house is, and here are his kids, but now he’s alone and empty and with no answers. (idk i just find john and mary and their relationship very fascinating) if the latter, if john and mary see each other again it’s like the spell activates again and they become blindly in love with each other, but once gone, they return to their confused and hazey state of mind, like just woken up from a coma

i do like mary coming back but i love how in s5 when she wasn’t found in heaven it was hinted that she was just discarded because she had fulfilled her “purpose” and i think this adds to the whole notion of how heaven and angels can be really cruel AND how mary is this mythical, religious figure to both sam and dean and we only get to know her through their lenses, like religion and faith

ruby is present for a longer amount of time to make the reveal even more shocking. at one point or another, dean does actually trust her and they all work together on cases for a while. ruby’s backstory as a witch is more explored. i like her death in s4 because she’s in this total state of euphoria and has achieved a goal only she was entrusted with, and she is so convinced sam will understand, until sam holds her down while dean carves her heart out. so we either keep that or she serves lucifer for a while (until he kills her which she is happy about because of her blind loyalty to him, could again mirror dean and john/castiel and heaven) or she serves lucifer and like crowley she realizes lucifer will kill demons after humans (redemption arc, but i don’t really like that, let her be evil!!)

dean and sam helps bela out of her deal and she becomes their go-to person when they need a magic item or book. she doesn’t like it but she owes them. regularly hooks up with jo.

angels are really hollow soldiers - they only follow orders and don’t understand the concept free will or choice or individuality at all. they are extremely righteous and strike without warning often on a whim, often very bloody (explosions a la castiel in swan song). if something fall into what they consider justice they will kill it. no concept of love, attraction or gender. real form can’t be perceived by humans unless they want them to, which leads to eyes melting (pamela) or breaking a person’s mind (in 5.16 zachariah actually says that sam and dean sees him in his vessel bc they’re ‘limited’. so.)

castiel, anna, maybe uriel and some others are exceptions to this, but only becomes so after longer exposure to human’s world. even then, they don’t change their violent whims, just the reasoning and where their loyalty lies

hbo spn is s1-5 stretched out for 8-10 seasons with the aesthetics of s1-2. i’m cutting out demon dean, purgatory, the mark of cain, the men of letters, the alphas, leviathatan, god being the real villain all along and the other worlds because it was just too much and far remived from the roadtrip aesthetic. keeping kevin, charlie (she is introduced via ash bc they’re hacker friends), the trials, rowena, uuuh the angels falling is such an interesting concept but idk if it would fit. maybe metatron? but his motivations are different. soullessness + the concept of souls might be kept if it’s explained better. i’m torn on whether or not to include the campbells

hell, heaven and purgatory are explained but only seen in glimpses, keep these ideas ambiguous and up to interpretation outside of what we hear. remember the line ‘hell is...well, it’s like hell. even for demons’? leave it at that. the exception is 5.16 bc that episode fucks so hard

if we end on swan song and let the show be the tragedy it is, i want to keep the ambiguous ending. is that sam or lucifer? if it’s sam, will he contact dean or walk away? we will never know! there is also no ‘the world is ending’ more than once, it really lost its impact after the second or third time.

idk how i feel about the men of letters - it is logical that there would be organized hunting and an established network and system on how to do things, but for the sake of keeping it hbo-style and grounded, there are no networks beyond the roadhouse and singer’s salvage yard.

i want sam and dean not have a permanent home except the impala, motels and impala ONLY. the bunker had potential but it was just for the sake of convenience it was there with all the lore and answers they needed when it was necessary. maybe eventually they do stop travelling so much when it becomes more about the Big Stuff instead of the episodic cases that requires driving all the time but it will be like an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere. i want sam and dean to never have a physical house as a home but they scrape together whatever they have make something similar to a show

as the show progresses, sam and dean become pretty hated by other hunters because they’ve started apocalypse and have an increasingly shitty reputation. and john was an infamous good hunter but also a dick. everybody knows that people who work with the winchesters often end up dead, that one brother will sacrifice anything and anyone to save the other and that they frequently work alongside demons. even the ones they DO work with (jo, ellen, bobby, rufus, bela) are hesitant to be involved with them

sam’s powers are strong but after killing lilith and the truth revealed to him, he represses the powers in shock and fear of how blinded he was by them and the rush of power they gave him. a little more about how sam fears what the lust for power and strength did to him. he continues to repress his powers, often to a dangerous point where he will be on death’s door as a result of not using them. when meeting jack and mentoring him in using his powers, jack asks him about sam’s powers after sensing them. sam eventually decides to lead by example and embraces his powers again, but remains extremely careful about using them (this also fulfills dean’s arc of having to let go of the holy-innocent-pure-ideal-not a person but an idealized version of sam-little brother sam he has put on a pedestal for so long)

bobby is viewed as a father figure by sam and dean but bobby makes it clear he doesn’t want that burden or relationship in his life after his wife died. he makes this clear to them too, but sam and dean have fucked up perceptions of parental figures so they don’t think bobby means it (they just latch on to whatever parental figures they can find)

we see more of sam’s relationship with the side characters; sam and jo hunt together on occasion, he hangs out with ash and talks hacking when visiting the roadhouse. he and ellen loves playing poker together. if anything, dean is the one who’s isolated - he only ever really cared about mary, john, sam and cassie, and never really had any friends. sam is way more well adjusted and sociable after spending time at stanford where he’s had conversations that didn’t only revolve around dead bodies and lore. 

this could also feed into dean’s extreme abandonment issues and isolation he feels and how this would affect his psyche

sam and dean are both unknowingly prepared to become the perfect vessels; sam loses his humanity by becoming more and more like lucifer (defying his father and his will) while dean becomes prepared by doing what michael did; casting his brother away in his time of need (blindly following his father and his will). very much like in s4 but even more intense and brutal (i love angst :))

we see different hybrids; demon/human (antichrist), human/(arch)angel (nephilim) and demon/angel (???), but none of them are all powerful bc narratively that’s really boring. they’re strong but have very specific powers that affects them and/or their surroundings in catastrophic ways (but no other worlds bs, we stick to the road trip aesthetic, keep it grounded). i want the only all powerful character to be god but he doesn’t show up at all, he’s the ultimate absent father. is it chuck? we never find out!

powers would for example include giving people diseases, force anyone close to them to tell the truth (not consciously, it’s just the air around them), read minds, create storms, light things on fire when they’re angry, make people hallucinate etc. like fucked up shit but not things that are too grande because again - that’s really boring

abbadon, the princes of hell and the four horsemen are more fleshed out villains instead of the one season reign the each had. 

being a prince of hell is a title that is inherited - after azazel dies, sam gets the title because he is the one with azazel’s blood in him OR meg does, but idk if that would be as interesting (if she actually was his daughter)

it remains a horror show throughout, lots of gore and blood

the moral code and ethics of the brothers are the opposite of the beginning; dean thinks in black and white, sam sees shades of grey and individuals instead of what they are. however, as the show progresses, their train of thought becomes opposites; dean becomes more open to how people are true evil and how monsters are often victims of their circumstance while sam becomes harsher and less forgiving after ruby’s betrayal along with finding out the truth of his existence and how there’s been demons around his entire life. eventually they’re on the same page and they see the circumstances. 

on the other hand; i also really fuck with the idea of dean maintaining his black and white morals on that all monsters=inherently evil, humans=inherently pure and good, but he is the only human on team free will. sam is half demon, castiel is an angel, jack is a nephilim, rowena is a witch, garth is a werewolf, mary is a zombie etc

demons become demons in hell by agreeing to become the torturer and thus giving up their humanity to be free of pain, does that mean they could become humans again by regaining some humanity? by doing good deeds? (potentially this is confirmed with jessica and how she came to love sam; genuine love and care for a human could reverse the demon process?) this also means dean was a demon in hell but was purified/turned back again when castiel raised him. this also plays into dean becoming like michael; in trying to absolve himself from what he did in hell he becomes ruthless, unforgiving and righteous to evil, much like the angels, regardless of his personal connection to a person and what he would consider “evil”

dean and pacifisim: after dean is cured from being a demon/the mark of cain/is made aware of his blind righteousness that he used as an excuse to kill, he becomes firmly determined to reign in his anger and violent tendencies by becoming a pacifist (like sam in s11) as a way to redeem all the blood he’s spilled. of course in his profession and true dean fashion he won’t be able to do it 100% so he decides to only act in self defense, and he only goes batshit violent on the offense when it’s about protecting sam

OR. dean’s self righteousness becomes his own downfall; the belief that all evil must be eradicated, refusal to see the circumstances and the shades of grey is what pushes him to lose his humanity and become a demon and therefore, in a potential ending the ruler of hell, because i think it would such an interesting journey from a to b, that dean starts out human, revels in his holiness, executes and kills in the name of his own holiness in the belief that he’s becoming the ultimate angel, the ultimate hero when it’s doing the opposite. if this happened then sam would take the opposite route; starts as a human, becomes more and more demonic, stops himself and returns to his hopeful and optimistic self, has faith and humility and that is what makes him ascend from abomination to purified and holy (trials). 

this could be a perfect 10 season structure as well: s1-5 are when sam and dean start off humans; dean becomes holy and as close to an angel a human can be, while sam drinks the demon blood and almost becomes one to gain the freedom and power he wants, but begins to turn it around to send lucifer back to hell. s6-10 is when dean becomes the unholy and sam becomes the holy even though neither realize because now there’s no grand master plan - this is who they are, who they choose themselves. don’t know how this ould end though; either as normal humans again (but there wouldn’t really be a ”normal” after everything) or they really go off the rails with sam like ruling heaven (not as god though, just as a good and just man) and dean ruling hell. castiel is human and stays on earth with jack.

the gothic americana aesthetic is kept throughout the entire show and is only shot on film

after s5 castiel returns to heaven to help restore order, and he takes charge for a little while, but eventually returns to earth after trying to introduce democracy to angels who didn’t get it. in his place, anna takes over and she rules heaven well (after trying to kill mary when going back in time she isn’t killed by michael, but narrowly escapes and remains in hiding to heal until castiel reaches out and finds her)

when finding out they are The Vessels and will be brought back regardless of what they try, sam and dean explore what this means more. dean throws himself into dangers and to protect others. he is burned, blown up, stabbed, electrocuted, beheaded and eaten, but wakes up the next morning in his bed without a scratch, without any pain and memories of his deaths. he revels in this untouchability. sam kills himself over and over only to be resurrected again and again by lucifer. he remembers the pain and blood.

that being said, while dean is like angel royalty, sam is demon royalty. the demons don’t go after him, they don’t hurt him. some even offer up themselves to be drained of blood, even after lilith’s death. it makes it really difficult to stay clean but he pulls through with dean and castiel actually supporting him. to help sam get through his addiction, dean stops drinking alcohol and they go through their withdrawal together

the angels almost worship dean as the michael sword and have an open disgust towards sam for being lucifer’s vessel - they always answer dean’s prayers and calls for help, they follow his orders if need be and don’t hesitate to heal him if he needs it. sam could pray until his vocal chords bleed or call out for help while holding his guts in his hands; none of the angels would come to his aid. the only one who answers sam’s prayers is lucifer as a voice in sam’s head or a hallucination. sam could call demons to help him out but he refuses

sam isn’t the first hunter to drink demon blood, to try to enhance his own abilities using the supernatural as a means to get there - there are hunters who have altered themselves with parts from werewolves and vampires to become better hunters, like the styne family (the guys from s10), blurring the lines again of what’s good and human vs what is evil and inhumane

if angels can’t find a vessel to volunteer, they will force them to say yes - the how is not important, only that the ‘yes’ is said, whether its meant or not, any verbal yes will do. the angels never sleep and they never eat, which is disturbing to sam and dean who are exhausted all the time and eat scraps whenever they can

castiel, like all other angels, is taught to despise and not care about sam winchester at all, but the more castiel gets to know sam, he becomes fascinated with him, how lucifer’s ultimate vessel, starter of the apocalypse and destroyer of god’s creation can be so kind and gentle, so full of faith, acceptance, optimism and hope. in dean castiel sees a good man, yes, but also a man who’s bloodthirsty, rages, revels in war, resorts all problems with violence, loves conditionally and expects unquestioned loyalty. sam too, has a darkness and bloodthirst in him, but it only comes out in glimpses. castiel thinks it’s funny, how sam turns out to be the opposite of lucifer while dean is so alike michael

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Part 3 (2020)

Ok, I have already completed the season, but I'm still gonna break it down episode by episode and give my thoughts during in retrospect. If you have not seen Parts 1 or 2, I recommend you start there.

Chapter 21: The Hellbound Heart

So, Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) is trying to get Nick Scratch (Gavin Leatherwood) back out of hell and separated from Lucifer (Luke Cook). If you had forgotten, during part 2 Sabrina found out that Lucifer Morningstar was her biological father, and they trapped Lucifer inside of Nick. She enlists Roz (Jaz Sinclair), Harvey (Ross Lynch), and Theo (Lachlan Watson) to help. Besides the fact that their all besties, I have no idea what help Harvey or Theo would be. Theo is at least loyal and listens to reason. Harvey just goes off all the time. Roz is the most useful with her "cunning." Anyway. Before they figure out how to get to Hell, Mrs. Wardwell (Michelle Gomez) comes back to Baxter High with a new obsession with Dante's Inferno. But she's not possessed by Lilith (Michelle Gomez) anymore; Lilith is too busy defending her title as Queen of Hell. Also, props to Michelle Gomez. She flawlessly played two very different characters this season. Meanwhile, Zelda (Miranda Otto) and Hilda (Lucy Davis) are trying to save the coven because their powers are all fading. They aren't sure what to do with the remaining students or what to tell them. All of their powers are a gift from Lucifer, but he's not really in the position (or the mood) to be giving them any powers. Down in New Orleans, Ambrose (Chance Perdomo) and Prudence (Tati Gabrielle) are on their mission to find her father. When they come up short, they turn to Voodoo Priestess Mambo Marie (Skye P. Marshall) to help them with a different kind of magic. Dorian Gray (Jedidiah Goodacre -that is quite a name-) helps Sabrina and friends to get into Hell as long as they bring him a magic flower. They go in without any real plan, as you do. Seriously. Not even a map. Wtf. Luckily, they walked into the Shores of Sorrow and met Caliban (Sam Corlett), who told them to follow the river of blood because "all blood leads to Pandemonium." That's the capitol city of Hell I guess? They have lots of fun on the way, and when they get there, Lilith says that Sabrina has to deal with the Kings of Hell for her, but Lucifer tells Sabrina that she has to take the throne for herself. It has to be a Morningstar. Well, she does, but the Kings aren't convinced. Then our friend Caliban shows up again, naming himself Prince of Hell, and challenging Sabrina for the throne. It is worth noting that Caliban is ridiculously hot. And generally shirtless. Sabrina accepts the throne to get Nick out of Hell. Which is problematic for a lot of reasons, but most of all that she decides to do this BEFORE separating him from Lucifer. So she's just gonna keep Nick/Lucifer tied up in the dungeon until she finds another flesh acheron to hold Lucifer. What could go wrong?

I really expected it to take longer for Sabrina to get to Nick, but considering the very twisted maze part 3 went down, getting to Pandemonium is pretty minor. Also, Sabrina's whole "I'ma do what I want and not tell my aunts so they don't stop me" is getting old.

Chapter 22: Drag Me to Hell

This one is a little less convoluted. Sabrina finds out that one of her duties as Queen is to drag souls to Hell. Specifically souls who have made a deal with the devil. We can infer from this that the only people who go to Hell are those who have sold their soul, so it would be far easier to not go there than some people in the real world would have me believe. The first soul, a cute old man who wanted to be chess Grand Champion, Sabrina decided to show mercy and sent him to heaven. Didn't go over super well with the Kings of Hell. Also, Sabrina is now a cheerleader at Baxter High. They call themselves the Ravenettes. There's a dance team from my high school called the Raiderettes, so that confused me for a sec. Lots more singing pop songs then actual cheers though. Reminds me of the Jailhouse Rock scene in Riverdale. I digress. Zelda has decided to reopen the academy and that she and Hilda were going to teach. Hilda was more voluntold. Agatha (Adeline Rudolph) doesn't really respond well. Prudence and Ambrose discover that Father Blackwood (Richard Coyle) is in Loch Ness, which is apparently super magical and can bend time and space? Idk, but I was highly disappointed that we didn't see Nessie. They see him at the very end of the episode looking like Mr. Bean at the end of the live action Scooby-Doo movie. They take him back to Greendale and use him to hold Lucifer so Nick can be free. Because what the world needs is Blackwood and Lucifer together. Back to Brina. Her second soul to collect (apparently this is a daily task for the ruler of Hell but she only does these two so there's a plot hole) is the ice cream man, Jimmy Platt (Matty Finochio). He tells her that he would like to extend his contract again by eating the heart of an innocent child. Sabrina confronts Lucifer about this later, apparently it didn't have to be a child, just an innocent soul. Adult virgins, beware. Sabrina tells Jimmy no (obvi) but Jimmy has already hidden the kid. So now she has to find this kid and collect his soul before the end of the day or there will be a coup in Hell. Sabrina wisely decides on just Roz to help her with this one. Roz is also the one who warns Sabrina against transporting herself into a freezer with no more information, but as per usual Sabrina goes anyway. Jimmy put warding sigils on the walls, so she's stuck and powerless. Luckily, Lilith knows what the fuck she's doing (as opposed to Sabrina who only thinks she does) and saves Sabrina. Sabrina takes Jimmy to Hell, but nobody is impressed. Caliban officially challenges her to find the unholy regalia- the three most powerful infernal objects, starting with Herod's crown.

This is a pretty typical Sabrina episode- she's way in over her head, but she either doesn't realize it or won't admit it. I'm never quite sure, but it seems like she genuinely doesn't know. I also don't remember if it's this episode or the next, but Harvey is suddenly feeling under a lot of pressure to have sex with Roz. But it never shows Roz being pushy about it, so idk wtf is going on in Harvey's head (besides convincing himself he's over Sabrina).

Chapter 23: Heavy is the Crown

For this one, Sabrina enlists Ambrose to help her find the crown because Ambrose is the most well read warlock ever due to his permanent house arrest. It's in Riverdale. They use a special compass to find it in a maple tree that the Blossom's use for syrup. If you've seen Riverdale, this probably has more significance and is less surprising. They steal the crown (somehow without realizing zombie King Herod is still in the tree). Sabrina wants to destroy it, but Ambrose wants to tap into its power to help the coven. Unsurprisingly, this does not work out well for them initially because Herod follows the crown and would very much like it back. Zelda is failing at getting respect from the students at the academy, and there's weird Lucifer beetles crawling in ears and controlling people. In other news, a carnival came to town! Obviously this has something to do with the larger plot because otherwise it would be a side note. Harvey, Roz, Sabrina, Nick, and Theo are all going together. Theo wants to invite the new guy, Robin (Jonathan Whitesell), because Theo is crushing hard. Robin is nerdy cute, I guess. I did think it was cliche to give the queer guy green streaks in his hair though. Harvey says tells Theo to invite him as part of the group, which Theo does, and Robin agrees. They all go to the carnival: Roz, Sabrina, and Theo ignorantly happy, Harvey struggling with his masculinity, Nick struggling with his ordeal, and Robin just happy to be there. Roz "sees" the carnival ringmaster as a satyr (or a faun depending on your preference for Greek or Roman deities, but they do tend to prefer Greek in this show), but she decides she was imagining things. Mrs. Wardwell talks to the fortune teller Circe (Lucie Guest) to try to find out what happened to her during the three months that Lilith was using her "skin suit." She doesn't get any concrete answers because that's not how fortune tellers work, Mary. Harvey stumbles across a snake charmer dancer woman in a tent full of pervy dudes and is almost entranced. Hilda goes to the carnival with her bf Dr. C, who proposes. Idk why she needed to throw her cotton candy on the ground during that, but I'm also on a sugar detox, so... Prudence and Ambrose are cleaning up Blackwood's mess by putting a living doll spell on Judas and Judith to hide them and putting his weird time warping monster fish egg thing in a fish tank. Yeah. No Nessie, but a weird egg. It's fine, I'm not bitter. Back at the carnival, Sabrina and Nick get attacked by Herod (who stole his crown back from Ambrose but knows it was Sabrina stealing it initially). Ambrose saves them, but Caliban pops in, steals the crown, and wins the first round of the challenge. At the very end, we find out why the carnies are important: they're pagans who worship the old gods and trying to resurrect The Green Man to rid the world of flesh since the Satanic witches have all but lost their powers. There is more than one voodoo practitioner, idk why they're not considered more of a threat because they're much more independently magical. They need a virgin to complete the rebirth, and that's why Robin (dun dun dun) was hanging out at the high school. Our potential virgins are Theo, Harvey, and Mrs. Wardwell.

I chose not to believe that Robin was actually bad because I want Theo to be happy. I chose to believe that even if he was using Theo, Robin was just trying to take his virginity to prevent him from being the sacrifice. Also, Sabrina is basically trying to force Nick to be normal even though she compared his symptoms to PTSD. Girl stop. He needs a sec.

Chapter 24: The Hare Moon

Zelda and Hilda have decided that the coven needs to celebrate the hare moon for the coming of spring to bolster good will. Sabrina isn't enthused (maybe because it requires her singing a song of summer into the forest to release a rabbit). Lilith tells Sabrina that they need celestial power to restore their strength, so she goes to Dorian, who has an angel trapped in one of his paintings (as all art collectors do). Sabrina drains some blood from the angel for her coven, but leaves in the process because she hears some screaming. Then she stumbles upon Nick and some sex demons doing BDSM. She's less than thrilled, especially since Nick low-key blames her for it. And Dorian has drank 90% of the angel blood, but they can't take anymore with killing him. So Hilda suggests using the little blood to make an oil mixture and take a moon bath under the hare moon (rub oils all over your skin and lie outside under the full moon) to absorb the celestial energy from the moon. During the daytime ceremony, they meet the pagans. Things don't go well. Zelda makes a bunch of petty insults, Hilda pisses off Circe, and Nick kills me the snake that bit Dorcas (Abigail Cowen). Circe puts a curse on Hilda to become a spider, and

Thoughts about Spn 14x08

SPOILERS AHEAD! BEWARE!

So, does anybody else have Buffy season 2 war flashbacks? (I know you do) What an episode. It was a lot to take in, both emotionally (ALL THE FEELS), as well if what happened in the episode could mean for the future. For whatever slow pacing the season had so far, Jack’s sickness and death arc happened rather fast. They could have dragged it out longer, and the reason they didn’t means it was a plot device. Though unlike Kevin or Charlie’s death (who were plot devices as well) this ended on a happy note. For now.

But, as always, let’s take a closer look.

Because I made a promise, because I love you

I saw some speculation about Jack’s death after last week’s episode, that he had to die in order for the story to make sense, but in all honesty I didn’t expect it so soon. I was not ready. And obviously neither were Sam, Dean and Cas. And we see how different they react to his death, how Dean can’t even bear to be in the same room when it happens, but afterwards he is the one dealing with the most mature. He is the one talking about a funeral, and he is the one most suspicious of the deal Lily Sunder offered. And I think it might be because he has been a father his whole life, and it is not the first child he loses (Sam), whereas Sam and Cas are strangers to the situation. Sam only lost people who took care of him but never someone he felt responsible for.

I hope nobody dares to give Mary shit for not calling back immediately. I think Dean calling her was a good way to include her in the episode, because apart from Team Free Will she was closest to Jack. And Dean, who tried to hold everything together, just needed for a moment to be a child as well. He needed comfort as well, and Mary is the only one he allows himself to ask for it.

The episode focused on the unnaturalness of a child dying before his parents. All three (Sam, Dean and Cas) fully accept Jack as their child. Cas says that this is not how he thought Jack’s story would end, which of course is very meta thing to say. Even on a show like Supernatural nobody expected Jack to really die. And we see two women trying to help Jack who both know what it means to lose a child: Rowena last episode and now Lily Sunder.

A word about Lily: I’m glad they brought her back because she has been an awesome character. I’m glad that she found some sort of peace and that they let her age (because, you know, women aren’t allowed to get older on TV). There is also regret of what she had done. Yes, she got her revenge, but it almost cost her her soul (metaphorically and literary), reminding us again that revenge will never bring you peace. And by doing so she ruined her chance to be reunited with her daughter. I love how they ended her story, how Dean reminded her of her humanity, of her own pain, and how that one big sacrifice got rewarded in the end.

Dean is the one who is the most suspicious of the deal they made, which shows his growth. Also his first assumption is that Sam made a deal, and he got really angry about it. I do believe that the spell they used to save Jack will have consequences. If Dean is suspicious it is always an alarm signal. Lily says that as long as he only uses his soul to sustain his body it won’t cost him much. So Jack will probably use this magic for more, which will have an effect on his soul. I… don’t like it.  

After Jack dies he goes to heaven, which makes sense, because without his grace he is essentially human. And yet the Empty claims him. So does the Empty also claims other angels who lost their grace? Does it matter more what you were born as, than as what you die?

I also wonder if the Empty has been awake since Cas woke it up (and it can’t go back to sleep until Cas returns), or if Lucifer woke it up again? Naomi said Cas is the only one who ever escaped the Empty, so does that mean Lucifer is still there and that she doesn’t know about him yet? Is the Empty pissed because Cas escaped or because he woke it up or both?

I also loved how Erica Cerra played the Empty (better than Misha and his weird accent *cough*). I really think the major issue is that the Empty is now awake, aware of the endless nothingness it is surrounded by. I would go bonkers as well. The deal Cas makes is of course a huge reference to Buffy and the curse Angel was put under. Angel lost his soul after one moment of true happiness, and that happiness happened after he finally allowed himself to return Buffy’s love. So yeah, if they go that route, it would be a huge step towards Destiel. I wonder if Cas remembers this del however and if Jack does as well, because we know Sam and Dean forgot all of their heaven memories.

One more thing about the Empty: back in season 12 it was already a metaphor for depression, representing empty nothingness, and we saw how Cas overcame it. And now, when he finally allows himself to be happy, it will take him away again. Ouch.

I also saw some suggesting that Cas only needs to become human, so he will go to heaven if he dies. But Jack was human when he died, and the Empty still claimed him. A deal is a deal.

Also speaking of Destiel, the episode made a huge deal of separating Sam from Dean and Cas, and showing us basically them acting as husbands the entire time. Because they are.

It is also interesting that Jack’s heaven, one of his happiest memories, is their hunt from 13x06. That was after Cas returned and Den finally started accepting Jack. He sees them as much as his family as they seem him as their child. I don’t think this makes Kelly less important, but he simply had no memories of her he could see. I do love the ways in which the show made Kelly part of Jack’s story and that they were finally able to meet. It tied her story up perfectly. And her and Cas’s story as well. All. The. Feels.

On another note I love how Supernatural just mixes up all religions. Yes of course Anubis works with heaven (and yeah for a moment I thought they would have the same point system as in The Good Place). But also Anubis’s reminder that it isn’t him or God who decides where we will end up but just ourselves. Our choices determinate what kind of person we are. (I wonder where Sam and Dean would go? They did save the world (a lot) but also did some really awful things)

So next week we will see Michael again. How does heaven know where to find him? And what is the relationship between heaven and Michael? Michael didn’t seem to fond of the angels and Naomi just gave his location to the hunters who try to kill him… unless it is a trap *badadum* We will see.

Hey Scoob, I really love your blog about the Archangels and I would like to ask you one thing, how would you do a redemption arc for Lucifer? How would you reformulate the plot of s12 and s13 on Supernatural aimed at him? I imagine they could make him have the following thoughts about humanity: "I have nothing in favor of humanity but now I also have nothing more against."

Well actually, I’m writing a fanfic series about just that 😅 [Link]

Granted, I did the ‘lucifer becomes human’ trope well before season 13 thought to do it, and I had it stick as opposed to it being another half-assed 1-2 episode long arc.

But if I were to honestly re-write the show starting with season 12, following similar arcs for the boys?

I think I’d start by finding a way to give Lucifer a reason not to run back to the Winchesters at the beginning of Season 12. There really was no reason for him to go off on a rampage like that when they actually took his side against Chuck and got him the apology he’s so desperately wanted. Sure, Chuck still left… but that’s not the Winchester’s fault. They were on Team Save the World together, there’s no reason for them to be hunting Lucifer down and there’s no reason for Lucifer to assume they are no longer friendly to him.

If he came to them with his vessel issues and his injuries, they likely would have worked with him to find a stable vessel—which could lead to Crowley revealing he has Nick and giving the vessel to him freely so that he has a trump card via the magical enhancements in case he ever needs to use Lucifer or stop him.

But! I’d give him a reason not to come back. Just because the writing for that was lazy doesn’t mean I don’t like the drama associated with Lucifer “busting dad’s already-broken toys”. I actually really liked that scene in Rock Never Dies, I thought Rick Springfield delivered those lines fantastically and it gave me a little hope again that the Writers did actually see Lucifer’s potential as a deeply broken and flawed character— not just a villain for villainy’s sake.

Don’t get me wrong— I love Lucifer as an antagonist, he makes for a fantastic enemy of the Boys. But the caveat to that is that despite being an antagonist, he isn’t a traditional villain. His goals in season five were, from his point of view, wholly noble and just. He believed he was the good guy. In season 11, he also believes that he’s the good guy. He’s agreeing to fight Amara, after all. In seasons 12 & 13 however he loses that, and we see him becoming evil for the sake of being evil and it just doesn’t fit with his character so far as we have seen him.

So in order to both give him his redemption arc and maintain his status as a Lawful Good (which doesn’t mean Lawful Nice) Antagonist, I’d give him a very good reason not to return to Team Save The World.

What that reason not to come back could be anything as simple as “he came back to the bunker only to overhear that they are hunting him down” to as complex as “he hasn’t found a vessel that can hold him yet and he’s burnt through so many at this point that he’s afraid to go back out of fear that they won’t forgive him for something he honestly couldn’t help”.

Whatever the reason, I’d show it in some way from his point of view so it is clear why he goes off the deep end and just start smashing shit. I did actually like that, though I wish they portrayed it less as “he’s throwing a temper tantrum because he didn’t get his way” and more like “everyone thinks I’m a monster and my father left AGAIN so fine, if they all want me to be a monster so bad, I’ll give them a monster.”

The biggest problem I had with that arc in season 12 is that he invests himself so much in high-power religious and political figures, then uses that power just to make the Winchesters’ lives hell. He doesn’t effect any serious governmental changes as the president, he doesn’t make any decrees as the archbishop… it was honestly just fanservice and then he used that power to make Sam & Dean Public Enemies #1. That, and he fucked a random nobody Because The Plot Demands It.

That’s really something I could never wrap my head around. Lucifer is disgusted by humans. He sees them as filthy, unclean, base creatures.

What logical reason does he have to sleep with Kelly rather than turn her into wall paint at the mere suggestion that he might want to sleep with her? They made it seem like a little pressuring from an aide was enough to get Lucifer to set aside his distaste for humanity and sleep with her, despite showing earlier I’m the season how he manipulated another woman into carving his name into her own skin just for insinuating he might be interested in her.

What feasible reason did he have to sleep with Kelly? Fear of discovery? He obliterates her and cleans up the mess, snap-snap. Who’s gonna know? It’s not like he planned to be in that position long-term.

I really hate Kelly as a character however, in part because she was written to be expendable and I HATE characters that serve no purpose other than fodder. If you kill a character it should mean something.

So here’s how I would give us a Jack/Nephilim arc without stupid Lucifer Fanservice and Kelly and the dumb supermax prison break. Are you really gonna tell me that Billie wouldn’t just come and collect one of them as per their deal once she became Death-with-a-capital-D?

Lucifer is angry, he’s been betrayed by his Dad and he couldn’t go back to the Winchesters, and he’s just smashing shit and making their lives hell because he’s directing his anger at them. Because God or Amara gave them their mom back but left him with nothing. Again.

So he goes for the one person that can hurt them most— their mom. He comes to her when she’s still unsure about her place in this world and after she just slept with Ketch and is mostly a little disgusted with herself for stopping so low.

He goes to her in a dream as John, and tells her her husband is still suffering in Hell after all these years. But he can give her John back if she says yes. John is more familiar in this world anyways, he reminds her, the boys really need their father, someone they can count on.

And he possesses Mary, literally less than an hour after she had sex with Ketch. She doesn’t even have the chance to take morning-after pills. So she conceives and while the fetus matures an archangel is possessing her, so it draws power from him too to grow.

Bam, a nephilim (who will be an actual half-brother to Dean and Sam), being carried by a decidedly not expendable character, so there is actual urgency to the Boys’ attempts to save their mother.

You get Mary!Lucifer carrying a baby and slowly coming to the realisation that this can be his new purpose. It was an accident… but he is also this child’s parent and he has a responsibility to it. Maybe his Father left him and the world thinks he’s a monster... but this baby doesn’t k ow him yet and he will be a better Father than his own.

You get him changing tactics from using Mary to taunt the Winchesters to Playing keep-away and hiding from them to protect her and his child.

We can still have them eventually pinning Mary!Lucifer down and exorcising him from her, with Crowley trapping Lucifer in Nick, because I love it, but I think Mary carrying the Nephilim and Lucifer getting off his warpath and onto the path to parenthood is a much better arc for both those characters than the arcs they’ve been given thus far.

As for season 13? If we assume season 12 ends similarly to how it did, with Jack still being born but Sam and Dean finding a way to keep Mary alive throughout it, then you get Mary and Lucifer trapped in the apocalypse world together, we can get similar scenes to the almost-beautiful shows of character development through those short conversations Lucifer had with Mary. Only she’d have more insight into his thought process now, so we could get more in-depth conversations, and perhaps a tentative friendship as he continues to protect her despite her no longer carrying his child.

My biggest change to season 13 would be keeping Lucifer human longer. It’d be focused on transitioning the role of main villain from Lucifer to Apocalypse Michael, or Asmodeus. Lucifer may not be in the story as much, but the scenes he does have would develop his understanding of what it means to be human and what it means to be a father, coming to a head when he regains enough grace (through either Anael or natural means) to be formidable and rather than go it alone, asks the Winchesters to help him find his son. I’d preferably have him not be stupid and just stay tagging along with Cass after the Escape From Asmodeus.

I’d force him to experience humanity, to have to understand what it means to live knowing you are mortal and might die at any time. If he managed to work his way into the bunker via Cass, I’d focus on him rebuilding his role as a member of a family, giving and receiving help from the Winchesters in different ways.

He’d get his redemption arc, and then I’d have all his lessons and growth culminate in self-sacrifice at the end of season 13. Someone has to keep Michael in the Apocalypse World. Everyone else has to get across. So he tells the others to go through and he holds Michael off for as long as he can.

Maybe people would be upset for killing him off after finally redeeming him— but Supernatural isn’t about Lucifer, it’s about the Winchesters. And if I gave them an ally that powerful, there’s very little left to challenge them. So I’d have to kill him off in order to let the story continue.

But at least that way, he’d have the noble death he deserved, rather than being put down like the beaten horse he’s become.

Anyways, I agree with your thoughts of Lucifer deciding he still doesn’t love humanity but he doesn’t actively hate them anymore because that is actually the impression I got in seasons 12 & 13. His beef was with specific people, not humanity as a whole. He was angry with God and with tfw, and that’s it.

The Angel knows his history, knows where it leads for him and his Vessel.

For most of human history, Fate has been misinterpreted and misrepresented. There’s a misconception that she is some kind of dramatic figure waiting to present them with a crisis which will determine the course of their lives. The humans underestimate her. They dig their heels in and succumb to the foolish notion of control - free will as they call it. They fight, and they suffer, and they run.

The Angel does not. He doesn’t need to; not that he could while trapped in the cage, but he knows how she works. She’s patient and relentless, like a trickle of water over stone.

Her plans span years, generations, millenia. Before time. Beginnings and endings as she sees fit.  All depending on series of decisions. Everything boils down to a yes or a no, and her plans - thorough and absolute - beat against even the strongest of wills, driving through like the water that cleaves through the stone. Slow and steady.

So is the case of the boy and his Angel; or, depending on how long you’ve followed the history, the Angel and his Vessel.

The Angel sat in a cage with nothing but time and anger to keep him company. And he listened.

He heard the screams. For so long, he only heard screams; cries from the tormented, the agonized, the forgotten. For some time, he joined them. Screaming his frustrations, his pain, his rage, but eventually that time passed and then he listened. Then cage became more than screams; there were whispers.

He listened and he waited and he whispered back into the darkness because he knows how she works. He’s fought her before, played her games, and discovered the truth for himself. When Fate’s design seems to veer off course, all it takes is a whisper. The lightest of breaths over that stubborn, rocky exterior to return to the steady progress as she designed. She was there, but so was the Angel.

Whispers of a family, a lineage, of signs. Whispers to the Yellow-Eyed Prince to baptize children with the blood of his creations.

Whispers of a boy, of the Apocalypse, of Death and demon deals. Whispers to the White-Eyed Daughter of Hell, his first creation and willing sacrifice.

Whispers of loneliness, vulnerability, of Power. Whispers to the most devout of his creations with her sweet blood and honey-dipped words that drew the boy even closer: “Sometimes we don’t do things that we want to do so that others won’t know we want to do them.”

The boy was frightened - he cried and he fought and on instinct he ran, even when he didn’t know what he was running from. All along, though, he knew he wasn’t just running from the monsters in a book; he was running from the death he didn’t want to bring, from his heritage and his human interpretation of Fate. And so he ran, but never got far.

Shadows, disguised behind caretakers, mentors, friends, and lovers constantly crept in, dragging him with the forward flow to this inevitability, and steadily beating down his resolve with tragedy and blood and nightmares.

Cause and effect. Call and response. Questions and answers. Yes and no.

And the Angel was always there with something as simple as a whisper.

Finally, when Fate decided it was time, the Angel was free.

The boy said no, so he found a substitute. Weak and crumbling, but still, the Angel was able to speak, and plan, and gather his army to destroy those who defied him. He was able to pursue his true vessel, the one promised by Fate. Nothing would stand between him and his Vessel, not even death.

And so they stand, eye to eye, and the boy knows the Angel will follow every step, bend the limits of time and space, kill without remorse until he can possess the boy. The Angel haunted his dreams. The boy tried a weapon, but the Angel lived on. The boy pleaded with other gods, tried to hide behind their power, but the Angel killed them all.

He then realizes what the Angel has known -  how futile the running has been. Sees in his own reflection how exhausted and beaten down he is from fighting the current. He understands how Fate took her time and carved their destinies together.

He looks at his Angel, sees the hunger and excitement in his eyes

He knows. They both know, just as She has always known and waited. History, each yes and no through countless years, each whisper, each nudge left, right or forward, every pulse of his blood in his veins - it’s led them here.

There is nothing else he can do but say “Yes.”

I’m definitely interested in the fandom’s reaction to the potential of Michael!Dean, and I believe there’s a lot to be said for both side’s gut reaction. It could go either way, but I’m going to start with the premise that I’ve considered this possibility for a while, and would love to see Jensen really stretched outside his comfort zone. There are few episodes left, and imo no time to have more filler episodes - they rarely come at this point in the season anyway, so I don’t expect to have a monster of the week style body swap - moreover Jensen has played ‘Not!Dean’ before with shifters and such. I can see him being Asmodeus for some thematic reasons, but this sounds more like a semi-permanent affair, like Casifer’s arc.

(Incidentally I have written about foreshadowing, the cross imagery connecting Dean and Michael this season)

I present to you a story of how I would do it, given the situation we’re in, the emotional arcs, Dean’s growth, etc. This is just a hot take based off my dash amongst other things, but hear me out:

Brief part of an episode where Dean is Asmodeus. Audience breathes sigh of relief. Some people are mad ‘oh, I was looking forward to Michael!Dean’. It’s a red herring.

Asmodeus uses Gabriel to kill Lucifer. Asmodeus then uses Gabriel’s grace to access the AU: he was informed of the spell? Perhaps he does so immediately after Sam and Dean explicitly decide it’s not worth it to do it. Instead of just bringing back Jack, though (remember Asmo is still after Jack), Michael comes from the AU. Maybe Jack and/or Mary remain trapped there idk.

Gabriel, ftr, thought Michael would destroy the world. In mirror to Hammer of the Gods, he reminds Sam and Dean of the rings that access the Cage. There’s an archangel in there, after all. But Gabe has no grace left after Asmodeus sucked him dry, he can’t help them. How are they going to open the rift themselves? Should they just suck it up that Mary is never coming home?

Dean and Cas and Sam have various intense personal moments about this, because if they do open the Cage, then Dean will have to say yes so that Michael has a body to possess. It’s a sacrifice identical to Sam’s sacrifice in Swan Song, identical to the sacrifice Castiel made.

All three of them have now made sacrifices to be possessed by archangels, creating mirroring. But before Dean gives himself to Michael, he uses ‘I with Castiel, and is honest and we get a kiss.

And then Dean says ‘Yes’ to Michael, and Michael is batshit cray cray, just as we were intentionally told he was, and disappears off in Dean’s body, and that’s the cliffhanger.

Season 14 is a broken up Cas who realises Dean loves him, Sam who’s lost his brother the way Dean lost him in season 6, and Jensen playing Crazy!Michael, while AU!Michael makes inroads as the ultimate villain. Maybe it’s only for a few episodes, maybe we get a reverse of the scene in Hell’s Angel with Dean inside the circle and Castiel screaming his name.

Don’t get me wrong, but if that’s S14, I...God, I would LOVE that.

Tears from the fans are not something that is rare on Supernatural, a show that is chock full of loss and heartbreaks throughout its fifteen seasons, coming to an end in 2020 after a fifteen-year run that has left its dedicated fandom an emotional wreck.

There have been moments where characters had to say goodbye and times where the ultimate sacrifice was made with shattered survivors trying to pick up the pieces. For a TV series with vampires and ghouls, there are a lot of touching moments in the Winchester household. Here are some of the most heartbreaking Supernatural episodes.

Updated on February 13th By Rhys McGinley: Supernatural has a knack for taking the emotions of its fandom and twisting them, bringing immense pain and sadness to those who adore the show in and amongst all of the brilliance it gives. Limiting heartbreaking Supernatural episodes to a list of ten does not do justice to just how many times the show broke our hearts over the course of its fifteen seasons, from the very start to the very end, whether it be through deaths, touching scenes, or even colossal endings.

15 "Heart" (02.17)

A constant in Supernatural is the idea that Sam and Dean, and hunters in general, find it nearly impossible to escape the life, to have an everyday, apple pie life, to have love, with romances coming and going through all fifteen seasons.

One of Sam's first romantic sparks post-Jess was Madison, who in "Heart," turned out to be a Werewolf. Despite their best attempts to help her, Sam and Dean could not save Madison, leading to her begging for death, with Sam making the gut-wrenching decision to kill her.

14 "In My Time of Dying" (02.01)

Supernatural season 1 did not go easy on Sam and Dean Winchester. The first episode alone saw the death of their mother, although Sam was a baby and Dean was very young. It also saw the death of Sam's girlfriend that set the brothers out on the road to find and eliminate the evil that infected their lives. Things got worse for the boys.

By the end of season 1, it looked like Dean was on death's bed, and it looked like he might die. No one expected this to happen since Dean was one of the stars, but few expected that it would be their dad, John Winchester, who sacrificed his own life to save that of his son. Seeing the boys lose their only remaining parent was a heartbreaking way to start the second season.

13 "All Hell Breaks Loose" (02.21)

Not only did season 2 start out with a heartbreaking tragedy and ended with one just as shocking. In "All Hell Breaks Loose," Supernatural let the entire special children storyline with Sam play out, and in this episode, all the kids were brought together to fight to determine who was left standing to become the Chosen One.

Remember at the end of season 1 when it looked like Dean was going to die? Season 2 brought death to Sam. Dean arrives in the town to help Sa,m but he is too late, and Sam is stabbed in the back and dies in Dean's arms. The elder Winchester brother had now lost his mom, dad, and little brother, and the tears were real in this one.

12 "No Rest For The Wicked" (03.16)

While the start of season two almost brought the death of Dean, season three brought it to fruition with one of Dean's most brutal deaths in his career of dying.

Despite a slew of attempts to fight off Lilith and the impending year left on his life coming to an end, Dean, along with Sam, Bobby, and Ruby, failed. Dean is torn apart by Hellhounds, and fans get their first glimpse of hell as Dean is chained up bloody and battered, screaming for his brother.

11 "Dark Side of the Moon" (05.16)

By season 3, Sam and Dean seemed to both be on death's bed and came back, so seeing them die wasn't quite as shocking and heartbreaking as the first times. This is good because in one episode in season 3, Dean died 103 times. Anyway, head to season 5 to see multiple heartbreaking Supernatural episodes.

The first came with "Dark Side of the Moon." In this episode, the show ups the ante a bit when Sam and Dean both die. With both dead, the brothers can't really do anything to bring the other back. However, what makes this episode so sad is that they go to Heaven and relive their past memories -- good and bad.

10 "Abandon All Hope" (05.10)

With fifteen seasons and over three hundred episodes, Supernatural is filled to the brim with characters who have impacted Sam and Dean's lives, but in the Kripke era, few were as loved as Ellen and Jo.

"Abandon All Hope" sees the heroes prepare for a showdown with Lucifer, trapped by hellhounds by Meg in a town rife with Reapers waiting for death. With Jo severely injured, the mother and daughter decide to stay behind and sacrifice themselves to save the brothers, killing the hellhounds in the process, A true tear-jerker.

9 "Swan Song" (05.22)

Season 5 ends with the big bang -- the Apocalypse. The boys have been trying to find a way to stop the Apocalypse to no avail -- even both dying and going to Heaven at one point and still coming back empty-handed. Now, with no other options, Sam Winchester finally gives in and agrees to become Lucifer's vessel in an attempt to trick him and send him back to his cage.

After a battle, the boys win and stop the Apocalypse, but at the cost of Sam ending up trapped in Lucifer's cage and Dean on the outside alive and alone. While Castiel was able to resurrect Bobby and heal Dean, the elder Winchester was still devastated that God allowed Sam to remain locked in Lucifer's cage even though they did what was asked of them.

8 "Death's Door" (07.10)

If Dean and Sam dying were not enough to make people cry anymore after 100 times, the death of other characters -- ones that won't come back -- still wreck the biggest Supernatural fans. In season 7, one of the most beloved characters on the show died when Bobby Singer finally met his demise.

The episode was "Death's Door," and losing Bobby was probably even tougher for the boys than losing their own dad. Unlike John, who kept his sons at arm's length for their own safety, Bobby was there for them and kept them together and strong. The episode was even more heartbreaking because it took the viewer through Bobby's memories, and we saw how much he really loved the brothers.

7 "Sacrifice" (08.23)

"Sacrifice" was the season finale for Supernatural season 8, and while it didn't end up with a major death, there was almost one, and it ended up as heartbreaking as any Sam or Dean death prior to this moment. Sam was trying to complete three trials in order to close the gates of Heaven.

However, Dean soon learns from Naomi that Sam will die if he completes the three trials. In no surprise, Sam seems ok with that, and the heartbreaking moment came when he told Dean that he believes he is a screwup and that Dean would be better with anyone other than him -- something Dean sets straight, strengthening their relationship and saving Sam's life.

6 "Do You Believe in Miracles?" (09.23)

While Dean has died over 100 times, when done right, it can still rip our hearts out and stomp on them after doing it. In "Do You Believe in Miracles," it was yet another season finale where a Winchester brother died -- and this was Dean once again. The season saw Dean struggling throughout, thanks to taking on the Mark of Cain.

The big bad this season was Metatron, and there was no way that he would make it to the end alive. However, the shocking moment came when Metatron drove the Angel Blade right through the heart of Dean -- in front of Sam. While Sam was heartbroken, it only got worse as Dean woke up as a demon -- the new Knight of Hell.

5 "Dark Dynasty" (10.21)

While they were not the best villains -- to say the least -- the Styne Family did something unforgivable. Dean and Sam were after Elden Styne and his family and needed to find a way to stop them and recruited Charlie to work with Rowena to decipher the Book of the Damned.

By this time, Charlie (Felicia Day) had become a beloved fan favorite and helped the boys on many missions before this. However, "Dark Dynasty" marked the end of the road for the character when she finally cracked the book. However, Eli Styne found her, and when Sam and Dean finally arrive at the motel, Charlie was dead in the bathtub, and the Winchester brothers realized there was nothing they could do to save her.

4 "Who Are We?" (12.22)

Much like Supernatural season 5, the 12th season of the show pulled no punches when it came to heartbreaking moments. Plus, the toughest moments happened in the final two episodes of the season. In "Who Are We," the American hunters and British hunters battle reared its ugly head.

Mary was under the control of the British Men of Letters and was just going around killing American hunters. When Mary was finally captured by Jody, Dean was able to get inside of his mom's mind. He found that she wanted to remain trapped in her mind because it had her happy memories, and Dean told her that he loved and also hated her, bearing his soul and finally pulling her out and into action once again. Seeing Dean, so hurt and vulnerable is always hard to watch.

3 "All Along the Watchtower" (12.23)

Supernatural loves to leave viewers with very sad moments when it ends each season, and the 12th was no different. After the touching moment in the previous episode where Dean bared his soul to his mother for everything she put him through by striking a deal with a demon and leaving them, all hell broke loose in the finale, "All Along the Watchtower."

The battle went into the rift, where Team Free Will took the battle to Lucifer. Nothing ever goes as planned, and the Winchester boys lost almost everything here. Crowley took his own life to close the rift, but Lucifer followed them back through and killed Castiel in front of Sam and Dean. That was horrible but even worse was when Mary rushed Lucifer, knocking him back through and going through herself -- leaving Sam and Dean alone once again.

2 "Despair" (15.18)

The entire ending of Supernatural is highly controversial in the dedicated fandom, and so many people were hurt by how the last few episodes played out. But, there is no denying the heartbreak they invoke in the fans.

"Despair" caused just that. This episode ends with not only the entire world vanishing with the exception of Jack and the brothers as ways to defeat Chuck become scarcer by the moment but an admission of love and final goodbye to one of Supernatural's most adored characters, Castiel. The final moments Cas and Dean share are gut-wrenching and tear-inducing, and it is one of the hardest goodbyes fans of the show have ever faced.

1 "Carry On" (15.20)

Of course, with a show as beloved, with as dedicated fandom, and such longevity as Supernatural, there was always going to be one goodbye that was harder than the rest, that, of course, being the final goodbye.

"Carry On" undoubtedly has some moments for fans to cling to, but it is an insanely divisive and criticized episode for the way it disrespects many characters. Nevertheless, Dean's final death, his car ride in Cas and Jack's heaven blasting the greatest song of all time, "Carry On Wayward Son," and the final reunion between the brothers will likely never fail to reduce fans to tears. The brothers are done; they have peace.

A Baby, a Lizard Monster, Two Hunters, and an Angel Walk Into a Bar by planiforidjit. 13K, NC-17. A baby shows up on front steps of the bunker and Sam and Dean have no choice but to take it in. They don't know where it came from or how someone knew to drop the baby with them, but with Cas's help they're trying to find out.

Beneath Your Bones, Where I Reside by wolfrock. 3K, NC-17. Set right after "My Bloody Valentine." Castiel hears Dean praying out in the scrap yard and goes to extremes to show him that Famine was wrong when he said his soul was broken.

The Best of All Instructors by theskywasblue. 2K, NC-17. Dean teaches Cas to shoot, Cas teaches Dean something entirely different.

The front door sticks when Dean pushes it, the pale blue paint cracked and peeling, and the inside smells strongly of the wet sand they dragged in with them on the bottom of their boots.

Zenith by anactoria. 33K, NC-17. Still relatively new to humanity, Castiel struggles with both Dean’s confusing behaviour and the loss of his angelic faculties. When a pissed-off witch restores his ability to see the supernatural, the curse seems like a blessing. He can help his friends again – and when Dean’s lies blow up in his face and Sam is once again left hovering between life and death, Cas is happy to be useful. But his abilities keep getting stronger, and they might just be more than a human brain can handle.

AU

All the Way by cadignan. 81K, NC-17. Castiel spends the first two weeks of college in much the same way he spent the previous years: alone with his books. He’s fine with it—he enrolled in college to learn, after all. Then in his first chemistry lab, he has the bad luck of being paired with snide, good-for-nothing Ruby, and the further misfortune of sitting behind Dean Winchester, the world’s most beautiful distraction. Ruby catches Castiel staring at Dean and makes him an offer.

The romantic comedy where Dean Winchester and Jo Harvelle are destined to get married, Castiel is given the task of playing matchmaker and fails terribly, the entire Heavenly Host becomes a sitcom audience, God warns against male pregnancy, and Jimmy Novak is incredibly unimpressed with angels in general. (Only sort of AU, but entirely hilarious.)

Dean finally meets the professor that Sam has been talking up for the entire semester and can't help but think the guy is a total dick. A sandwich, a plaid shirt, and one hell of a first date later, Dean has to admit...he was so, so very wrong.

Centuries after the surface of the earth was devastated by an unknown disaster, the remnants of humanity live in a series of vast underground silos, each unaware of the existence of the others. For the inhabitants of Silo 34, the silo is the world, and the only world they know. Questions about the outside world are forbidden, and asking them is what got Dean Winchester's parents killed. He isn't even sure himself that they weren't crazy. That all changes when he hears a voice on the radio -- a voice from another world. (My fave.)

Dean's shrink has been telling him he needs to start making "grown-up choices," and if that's what he has to think about in order to make Cas fall for him, then he'll give it a whirl.

Dean finds excuses to keep going back, and Castiel finds excuses to keep giving him special treats.

While Dean struggles to come to terms with the isolated, lonely life he's made for himself, a disruption comes in the form of Castiel Novak, Lawrence Private's newest faculty member. Those blue eyes and raspy voice are things Dean can't ignore for long, and when he's forced to stop fighting his affections, Dean finds his lonely life turned upside down. Is it possible he could deserve an Apple Pie Life after all?

There’s a photo hanging in the hall of the Winchester home, Dean’s maybe three years old, and he’s on his dad’s bike, hands gripping the handlebars with a big grin on his face. Next to it, his mom and dad’s wedding photo, dad with his kutte and mom with a tight-ass dress on, looking like they had the world at their feet. Him and Sammy, in another photo, playing with toy guns and his mom laughing in the background. Then, Cas and Dean at fifteen and sixteen respectively, hands clasped tightly, sitting on the hood of the Impala and making faces at the camera. It’s a simple little bundle of his past, present, and future in a life that isn’t ever simple.

The Request by cloudyjenn. 37K, PG-13. When Sam Winchester prays for his brother, Castiel is finally sent on his very first assignment. But what should be a simple love match turns into much more and Castiel finds himself risking everything to ensure the happiness of his extremely frustrating charge.

Run Boy Run by DarcyDelaney. 42K, PG-13. Cas likes to run. He likes that it’s something he can do alone whenever he wants, something to clear his head and decrease his anxiety. All that changes when his sister, Anna, volunteers him to be a guide for a blind runner who wants to participate in the Boston Marathon. Cas is completely, totally, 100% against this at first, but once he meets said runner, the snarky and (if Cas is being honest) ridiculously attractive Dean Winchester, he starts to have a change of heart. Maybe running with a partner won’t be so bad after all.

Shoulder to Shoulder, Hand to Hand by cornelius. 58K, PG-13. After release of his memoir, the last thing former fighter pilot Castiel wanted was more time in the spotlight. But when a chance comes up to be on a celebrity ballroom dancing competition show, he knows that drawing attention to his cause is more important than his own comfort. Dean’s danced on Ballroom Superstars for nine seasons without a single win under his belt. With his tenth season coming up, and a man for his partner, he worries that the championship is forever out of his reach. Castiel and Dean both want to win for their own reasons, but they’ll have to figure out how to work together, and manage their mutual attraction, if they want to become the new Ballroom Superstars champions.

Some Day Soon by Persephoneshadow. 11K, NC-17. Castiel doesn't mind his job as lawyer just like he doesn't mind that he's alone on Christmas Eve and working on Christmas Day. That's just the way life is - a dull slog of work and duty and not much else. The only thing he wishes he could change is to maybe get up the nerve to really talk to Dean Winchester, the gorgeous process server who Castiel has harbored a crush on for months. But maybe with a little meddling and some holiday magic, they'll both get what they want for Christmas.

Shut Up (Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is) by kototyph. 24K, NC-17. Dean's done some pretty stupid things, but getting drunk-hitched in Vegas to a colleague he barely knows might just take the cake. His surprise husband, Castiel, is a little weird but likable despite that, and Dean figures they’ll go back to Boston, get a quiet annulment, and go their separate ways. Six weeks later, he’s still married to one of the strangest, most genuine and definitely most dangerously lov-- likable guys he's ever known. Dean doesn't know why or really even how it’s happening, but it’s getting harder and harder to remember that he has divorce papers to file.

What Happened in Vegas by Ltleflrt. 18K, NC-17. Long time friends Dean and Castiel are road tripping from Chicago to San Diego for Sam and Eileen’s wedding, and a pitstop in Las Vegas turns into drunken love confessions and a surprise marriage. Turns out the pining has been mutual this whole time, but now they’re finally together and on cloud-fucking-nine. Until they remember that this trip isn’t supposed to be about them. To avoid undermining Sam and Eileen’s important weekend, they decide to keep their new relationship status a secret. They’ll keep the heart eyes toned down and their hands to themselves, but the struggle is real.

Has anyone compared/contrasted Lucifer pulling Mary into the AU at the end of s12 and Sam and Michael in "Swan Song" going into the Cage? What are your thoughts on the parallel structure, if any? I’ve seen it commented on a LOT right after the episode, although I can’t actually find a gifset comparison… And I would have to get out the DVDs and cap it by hand to make a comparison so *ugh* :P

I can’t find any meta on it though when going through my 5x22 tag so it had to all be passing comments just on how similar it looked.

I guess obviously the surface level parallel is just to give a sort of cinematic contrast to what Sam did because even though she’s not possessed and didn’t MEAN to fall through with him, she was doing a sort of sacrifice play, living the dream to go punch Lucifer in the face like she said she wanted to do. In defence of her boys. I mean, obviously. Not just punching Lucifer. I don’t *think* this all happened because of her vindictive need to punch him to make up for everything that ever happened because of her, although that is a valid reading I guess :P

It’s all a bit messed up because Lucifer pulled her through because of spite, while Michael was the one who latched onto Sam, and tried to stop him, but fell into the Cage with him because he couldn’t let go and be chill about the fight he was supposed to have with Lucifer. You can’t line up motives with the reasons why Mary went into the AU with why Michael got dragged into the Cage, and Lucifer wasn’t even in charge when it happened in 5x22. 

So going more than superficially makes it pretty hard to say it’s more than using the parallels as the means of removing Mary from the story and a comparison that like Sam she was doing something heroic for them, and ended up trapped in another world, and when they first see her again, she’s in a cage, ironically with Michael (I guess with dramatic irony that they don’t know this but we do so it’s somehow even more obvious to us)… 

It does make a direct parallel to Sam though, that he was trapped with Michael and Lucifer in the Cage, and though the AU stuff has been pretty thin so far and we’ve only had one real episode of Mary there, plus a glimpse for us in 13x01 and a glimpse for Jack and the Winchesters in 13x09… The parallel we got on screen was to Dean in Hell, and they were VERY not subtle about that since they used 13x08 to show that - which makes a parallel instead that Mary has been condemned to the AU, which is the world that *technically* she broke since it’s the world where Sam and Dean were never born, because she didn’t take the deal. 

I’m not entirely sure what that’s saying about anything or if there’s an unintentional crappy message if you dig too deep :P But in 12x23 it was a sort of vindication at least. That their world was so nice BECAUSE they were all in it and their entire chain of events had happened the way it was supposed to since before they were born.

Thinking a few other loose thoughts while prodding this. Season 12 started with a strong theme of season 6 being reversed, and if you roll it backwards far enough you get to 5x22. Obviously all the events being messed up so it’s all a bunch of superficial similarities but all the results and characters and motives and even the angle of the hole they’re falling in are all changed around, arriving at that end and falling into an apocalypse does seem to finish rolling season 6 back through to season 5. 

Also if Mary is a Sam parallel in terms of circumstance, more than Dean being in Hell despite the superficial parallel which is more about motivating him than drawing a proper allegory - Mary’s there accidentally and getting tormented by Lucifer and then Michael just because she happens to be around and caught in the middle of all of it - Sam was saved by Cas in this example. Of course, brought back soulless so there’s got to be consequences… That was part of Cas’s post-apocalypse (lol that phrase is meaningless in this show) hubris and at that point feeling like he could do anything so why not jailbreak Sam from the Cage because Dean would want it and it would be a happier ending than what they had, and of course that causes a whole bunch of problems. 

BUT it is a Winchester codependency deal free zone, because although Dean was LOOKING for ways to do it all through that year, Sam was already back, and the deal he cut with Death to get Sam back turned out to be a lesson Death wanted him to learn and he was intending to give Sam back, because he felt there were bigger problems they needed to deal with. An advantage of Gamble being really un-critical of the codependency is that while none of this is particularly healthy, it’s not all being put on full blast like in Carver era.

I think there’s the obvious parallel now that Jack is the one who had the means to get Mary - like Cas did while Dean had no clue how to save Sam - and had been pursuing it behind their backs for 3 episodes, before coming up with a solution to get her back that’s preeeetty sketchy because aside from any of the consequences they’ve already been warned by Death to back off from messing with the cosmic stuff and here they are… In 6x11 he’s warning them before Cas opens Purgatory, in 13x05 she’s warning Dean before they go universe hopping and cause what’s already happened plus I bet a whole bunch more nonsense on top of that yet to come :P

But anyway Jack has been given the sole task of rescuing Mary because no one else made it to Apocalypse AU with him, and that seals the comparison to Cas in/before season 6 saving Sam, especially as we get a lot of motivation overlap, but Jack’s is much more clear and personal in some ways because we’re seeing it as it happens and getting explanations as we go, such as his need to do something good and seeing the whole process by which he would arrive at deciding that he can and should save Mary, and why, and who for, and all that. 

I think we need to see more of the consequences/Jack’s overall season to keep on comparing him to season 6 Cas because so far as we’ve seen he’s not cut any shady deals (and I doubt he has, at least because anyone who he could cut a shady deal with is still looking for him :P) and he’s still just at the part that technically Cas had already done before the end of season 5 since Sam was already back before the credits there. We really just have Cas’s explanations in season 6 to go on, told from the perspective of the END of season 6, where everything’s got all hecked up… 

I’m guessing if this is going to be bad in some way it will continue to be a different sort of light on things, especially to make a parallel with Cas which could be like one of those scenarios about the son accidentally atoning for the father’s mistakes or whatever by having a take 2 and doing it better on their go around - it’s Cas’s biggest mistake and it’s why, for example, so many angels are dead and they’re pestering Cas to get Jack to make more angels (and we’ve had a few reminders this season about Cas being responsible for that, with his face in the Empty when it tells him all the other dead angels are in there too). I think Cas has long ago redeemed himself *personally* to the Winchesters for the season 6 stuff, but it would be nice if this is heading a way to make Cas less catastrophically guilty to Heaven because he could move on with his life if that guilt was lessened. 

(On the other hand I do worry about Jack doing the exact same thing he’s doing with Mary in 13x09 - “Oh you want this done? And it will make everything better! Okay!” *just goes and friggin… does the thing… without stopping to consider the consequences* - oh, Billie will be facepalming if all the previously-dead angels suddenly drop out of the Empty or something like that :P) 

Anyways this is all getting really ahead of where we are, but something like knowing it would be a season 6 parallel with Mary in “the cage” and Jack going off to rescue her metaphorical guns blazing is definitely only something that solidified SINCE 12x23 so I guess it’s one of those things that is only easy to talk about looking back from 13x09 (even if we’ve been wondering if/how Jack would at the very least open a rift and get Mary back since the summer) because now we know for sure he’s doing it for very similar or at least comparable reasons to what Cas did for Sam. So we’re seeing another thing that only happened off-screen in the original loop happening on screen this time but told through different characters and in different ways (like Patience leaving home to go hunt monsters being an emotional and situational reverse parallel to Sam leaving for Standford, but possibly being the closest version we’ll see on screen to that moment). So there’s a whole parallel structure going on here which just *starts* with Mary going into the AU like Michael and/or Sam falling into the cage in 5x22…

Don’t *think* she’s going to come back soulless although every friggin time a character returns from somewhere or other since, like, ever, people start speculating if they’re soulless so in before that :P

Supernatural Season 15 Episode 17 Review: Unity

Supernatural Season 15, Episode 17

Only three episodes left after this, which means this episode had some serious ground to cover. 

The episodes in this COVID-19-delayed portion of the season had thus far felt a little filler-ish. There was some character building and emotional admissions that made it all worthwhile, but still felt like we were holding back from really digging into the meat of what this season is all about — stopping Chuck. At least that changed by the end of the previous episode when Sam and Dean argued over Jack’s role in stopping Chuck, and the pressure was on when they found that their world was next on Chuck’s To Do list. 

This episode, “Unity,” felt like we really hit Supernatural’s stride for the lead-in to the end. In a unique format for Supernatural, the episode is divided amongst the major players, starting with a name heading before each subsequent chapter. Portions of the runtime are devoted to Amara, Dean, Sam — each having their own revelations that will affect their immediate futures. 

After the initial episode setup where Sam and Dean decide to explore separate methods of taking down Chuck, the chapters start with Amara. She’s still living it up, enjoying the pleasures of life when she finally runs into Chuck. He wants her to help him do a “hard reset” on the Earth, so he can try again with some other creation. She wants him to see the beauty of his current creation. She tries, an effort that maybe could have been better accomplished if she’d been on the Earth a little longer. Maybe presenting Chuck with some groveling fans wasn’t the best plan. Afterall, he insists on being called “Chuck” not God, and reminders of his previous persona never seem to go over well with him.

Amara’s portion ends with temporarily trapping Chuck in the bunker and a suggestion of compromise. Amara wishes for a “true balance” between light and dark, something that bites her in the butt later on. Chuck, as selfish and vain as he’s become, pushes away all attempts to dissuade him from his destruction. Chuck has become such a brat, further illuminating how disillusioned the divine creator has become. Nothing is good enough for him. He’s over it all, and considers creation his failure.

When the story switches to Dean, we follow him and Jack as they hunt down the final ritual Jack needs to complete, which leads them to a shop that sells rocks and minerals. 

The test put to Jack is done brilliantly. One of the crystals before him was touched by the divine — but which one? It’s like choosing the Holy Grail in Indiana Jones — you best pick the right one or your adventure here is over. Jack picks one, then changes his answer. All of these, everything, contains a spark of the divine because it was brought into being by the Creator. That was a really beautiful and smart answer.

Alessandro Juliani brilliantly plays Adam, the first man, in this scene. If you’re like me you might have recognized him as Dr. Hamilton from Smallville nine years ago. The man does not age. Coincidentally portraying a man multiple thousands of years old, he doesn’t take on the beleaguered look of Cain who was weighed down by the many years he walked the Earth. Adam has laid back attitude of a modern hippie. He had plenty of time to come up with the solution — his own rib, a symbol of creation itself. 

The most important part in this chapter was how it ended — Dean finally says thank you to Jack for his pending sacrifice. Dean taking the time to say thank you here was part apology.

Dean and Jack’s relationship had been very strained ever since Mary’s death. It hadn’t helped that Jack heard Dean telling Sam that Jack wasn’t family. A while ago, before Jack losing his soul and killing Mary, the story was completely different. Jack had become the youngest Winchester brother in a sense, and these boys would have done anything for him. Jack represented the best of Kelly, his mother, and the potential for someone fated for bad things to become inherently good. In a sense, he mirrored Sam’s cursed life. Sam could have gone dark side — in fact, he walked that path a few times thanks to demon deals, losing his soul, giving in to Lucifer. Sam had the support system to overcome all that, which makes it all the more interesting that it’s Sam who forgave Jack and still considers him family. Sam can relate. 

In Sam’s portion of the story, he teams up with Castiel to try to find another way, eventually finding the key to Death’s door. In Billie’s place we find The Empty, dressed up as Meg 2.0. Sam has to come up with a story on the spot to get The Empty to spill some key details about Billie’s plan. This is a talent you know he’s perfected as a hunter — part of the job is lying to get information out of someone in order to solve a case.

Sam learns that The Empty has teamed up with Billie, because Billie wants to be the next God. The implications are horrible, but due to CW “Do Not Reveals,” I can only say it’s very fitting what the rest of her plan is. If you remember those many seasons ago when Billie was introduced and she told Sam how she would rule as Death.

The separate stories intertwined again at the Bunker, as Dean and Jack stumble forward to use Jack as the ultimate weapon, Sam rushes forth to reveal Billie’s plan, and Amara and Chuck have a heart to heart as they await the Winchesters. 

The story bounces between two sibling confrontations, one between the Winchesters and one between Amara and Chuck. 

Sam and Dean argue whether Chuck should even be killed. Dean yells, “We don’t have a choice!” while Sam argues back “We always have a choice!” It’s the Free Will debate all over again, and it’s happening at the most crucial and anxiety-inducing time. Dean’s drive to take out Chuck is so narrow minded, he just about chill with taking out his brother and everyone they care about in the process. He feels the sacrifice is worth it. No wonder he’s fine with Jack dying — he’s fine with a bunch of people dying if it means Chuck doesn’t get to write people’s destinies anymore. 

Sam’s talk with him is so emotional he’s shaking and crying. It was heartwrenching to see Sam in such a state, begging his brother to see the right way, that this wasn’t going to end well if they went through with it.

“What part of omniscient do you people not understand?” Chuck says, bursting into the scene. The Winchesters are always underestimating the power of the almighty Chuck. It is this that will lead us into the final three episodes.

The Worst Thing Each Main Character From Supernatural Has Done

Over its 14 seasons, Supernatural presented us with many characters, amd it can be hard to determine the main characters aside from the brothers, Sam and Dean, Cas, and Jack. Still, there were characters that were closer to the story in recent seasons, and others that had a lasting effect on Sam and Dean, making them main characters.

That said, all of these characters have performed good deeds (yes, even Ruby and Lucifer), and all of these characters have done horrible things (yes, even and especially, Dean and Sam). Even the angels are tainted in Supernatural. 

13 Lucifer: Stealing His Son's Power

We would expect everything that Lucifer did to be bad, so it is hard to choose the worst. Could it be when he tortured Sam? Could it be when he killed Cas? When he brutally killed Rowena? Or when he treated Crowley, literally like a dog? Then, there were all the angels he eviscerated. All these and more are horrible, but the worst thing he ever did was stealing Jack's (his son) grace. It had seemed that he was interested in his son, but his son was just another way to get power.

12 Lucifer's Human Vessel, Nick: Dooming His Wife

When Lucifer leaves Nick's body, Nick comes back.  First, he begins to search for a way to avenge his family, his wife, and child who had been murdered. He kills people and demons to do this, sometimes innocent people, but this isn't his worst thing.

Finally, he goes back into his old house, and there he sees his wife's ghost. She tells him that she's trapped in the house due to the unfinished business of her murder and his path with Lucifer. She begs him, "Reject Lucifer right now. If you do, I can leave. I can find peace." Nick won't do it, turning his back on his wife.

11 John Winchester: Getting Jo's Dad Killed

Normally, we would say that John's worst thing was how he raised his boys, but his teachings made them into men who can save the world. If he hadn't given them the tough love and the field experience with hunts, they might very well have turned out like their half-brother, Adam, first killed by a standard ghoul.

On top of hist list of worsts is getting Jo's dad killed. From what Ellen, Jo's mother, says, her husband went on a hunt with John, and John used him as bait and left him. Ultimately, this left Jo without a father, and Ellen without a husband.

10 Rowena: Attack Dog Spell

When we are introduced to Rowena in the series, we see a quirky red-haired witch intent on creating her own coven. While she's powerful, the Grand Coven rejected Rowena for her odd and often extreme ways. At first, she seems decent, rescuing two prostitutes and wanting to introduce them to power. However, when threatened, she uses one as a prop for her escape. She turns the woman into an attack dog, who quickly bleeds out after the spell runs its course.

9 Crowley: Killing Those Sam and Dean Had Saved Before

Since we like Crowley in the later seasons and consider him more of an ally to Sam and Dean, we forget that he started out as a big bad. In Season 8, he threatens to kill someone they had previously saved until they stop the trials. One of his victims is Sarah Blake, a charismatic side character we met and loved in Season 1. Had Sam met her at a different time (he was still grieving Jess), they might have become an item. Horrified, Sam has to watch Sarah killed despite all the wards and protections he and Dean put up to try to protect her from Crowley.

8 Chuck/God: Bringing The Dark Spirits

Chuck/God has been mainly a side character even though he is the mastermind behind it all. In Season 14, he tries to manipulate Sam and Dean into killing Jack. Sam notices how Chuck watches with glee as Dean almost kills Jack. In the end, Chuck kills Jack. Sam and Dean discover that Chuck has been playing their lives for entertainment all this time. Angry with the brothers, Chuck decides to bring back all the dark spirits they vanquished over the seasons, even back as far as Season 1. He's decided to end this world and to make that ending painful and tragic.

7 Ruby: Using Sam to Bring Lucifer

Ruby seems the anomaly, a demon with a heart of gold. She trains Sam to take down Lilith, feeding him demon blood to make him more powerful.

In the end, she wanted Sam to kill Lilith because she knew that Lilith was the last seal needed to be broken in order to bring Lucifer into this world. She played all sides convincingly, betraying both brothers in the end, who had come to trust her.

6 Bobby: Becoming a Vengeful Spirit

After Bobby dies, his spirit stays attached to his whiskey flask, which Dean keeps in his honor. Initially a helpful entity, Bobby points out research that helps the brothers in their demon hunting. However, he starts to develop into a vengeful spirit, like the ones that they all have vanquished before. Right now, he is still Bobby, but Sam and Dean realize that he won't be for long if he doesn't cross over.

5 Mary Winchester: Killing American Hunters

The British Men of Letters recognize Mary as the perfect tool for them to get rid of the American Hunters. Not only is Mary a good and strong hunter, but she is also trusted by the other hunters. This means that when she shows up at the doorstep, they will let her in. While Mary was brainwashed to do this, she still did it, and she effectively whipped out many hunters and allies.

4 Jack: Killing Mary Winchester

While Dean feared Jack from the start since he was the son of Lucifer, Jack initially is good. When he has his powers, he saves people constantly and sees Dean, Sam, and Cas as his idols. Even when his powers are taken away and he becomes fully human, he still puts his life on the line to help others.

But a soulless Jack is different. It's not that he is bad, it's that he doesn't feel morality. He kills Mary because he wants her to stop talking. He didn't intend to kill her, and he even tries to bring her back. However, he can't, and Mary remains dead.

3 Cas: Tries to Become God

Season 7 Cas takes in souls, making him more powerful. He becomes full of ego and power. This leads him to kill the angels and people that don't support him. He becomes dangerous in his own idea of right and wrong, believing that he must rule with a firm fist. Later, he does sacrifice himself (luckily, he survives), but for much of Season 7, he is the villain.

2 Dean: Kills Amy Pond in Front of Her Son

Early Dean had a strong sense of right and wrong, seeing the world only in black and white. When he finds out that Amy (a kitsune) was killing to help her sick son (another kitsune), he sees her as evil and without much hesitation, kills her. She had been a friend of Sam's when they were teens, and she saved Sam. She lived her life trying to live off dead blood, until her son got sick. Sam tells Dean to let her go, as she stopped killing and won't again. Dean goes anyway and kills her in front of her young son.

1 Sam: Kills Dean's Daughter and Feels No Remorse

Dean has a one night stand with an Amazon woman (though he doesn't know that she is an Amazon at the time). This results in her conceiving a child, who grows to be a 16-year old girl in only a few days. As part of her initiation, she must kill her father. Sam stops her by killing her. While this is bad, what is worse is that he tells Dean that Dean went soft by not doing it himself.

Adding one more thing to our favorite brothers, they also left Adam, their half-brother, behind.

This has to be a plan turning on lights and going into the house would be stupid. And they’re not stupid.

Ok. Now. Final thoughts, or, to sum up.

Dean and Sam are out and loose again. That's good. When they find out how many innocents just died for them to escape they're gonna be pissed. Cas just proved without a doubt who his family is and how much they love him. HE is a WINCHESTER TOO. He won't let a "deal" stop him from being with his brothers. And he knew that Mary dying would have killed Dean and devastated Sam so he wasn't going to let that happen. Mary.....sigh. Ok. So she was willing to die for her kids without hesitation. That's good. But it's very reminiscent of John and it's just like, okay, yes you'd die for your kids but that still doesn't make you a good mother. I really hope this whole thing changed her outlook and she'll STAY with them and stop running away and abandoning them because THAT is why I have such a problem with her. She knows her kids want her and she leaves anyway. 

So Dean and Sam together again > Awesome Cas siding, once again, with his brothers and taking his place at their side > Awesome Mary willing to die for her kids > good and has the potential to be great, all she has to do is admit how selfish she's been and apologize for being absent and only texting Dean and not Sam, and not giving Dean that much attention when she does text, and yelling at Cas and blaming him when he's the ANGEL who protected her kids, and.....yeah. She just needs to apologize and mean it and I am willing to forgive her. She really does have SO MUCH promise as a good character, once they stop trying to make her into the next John.

Once Upon a Time

Season 6: Episode 16 – Mother’s Little Helper

Gold and Belle convince Emma to help Gideon, explaining that together they can stop the Black Fairy. Henry experiences a disorienting shift in his powers that forces Regina to seek counsel from the previous Author. Meanwhile, in Fairy Tale Land, Hook attempts to win the assistance of an old adversary by betting his most prized possession on a game of cards. And, in a flashback, the Black Fairy tortures young Gideon in hopes of molding him into the perfect apprentice.

Belle will never give up on anyone, will she? She always sees the good in a person no matter what. That is one of her endearing qualities, but it seems that Gideon is beyond hope. However, there seems to be more to his story, and it will be interesting to see where his loyalties lie in the end. Henry’s shift in power seems to be a simple way of speeding up the plot to bring us the “final chapter”. Is this an indication that this may be the last season of Once Upon a Time? There have been several talks about renewing the show for a seventh season, as well as discussions of some of the key actors’ contracts being finished this season. It will be interesting to see what changes may come if the show is renewed.

Season 6: Episode 17 – Awake

Still trapped in Neverland, Hook aligns himself with Tiger Lily, hoping to find a way back to Emma. Back in Storybook, Regina works to break the sleeping curse that David and Snow are under, and Gold denies The Black Fairy, which brings the two of them to a fearsome impasse. In flashbacks, we learn what Snow and Charming sacrificed in order for Emma to fulfill her destiny as the Savior.

This episode was mainly a way to bring the Black Fairy to Storybrooke and let everyone know of her existence, bring Snow and David back from their curse, teach the town what they gave up, bring Hook back, and show that Gideon was under the control of the Black Fairy. It was a lot of exposition, but not a lot of tension or action. The history between Tiger Lily and the Black Fairy was not very necessary, but it did give an explanation as to why she had the wand. The events of the episode unfolded in a way that made the episode entertaining, but it was mostly just exposition and a way to move the story forward.

Season 6: Episode 18 – Where Bluebirds Fly

In flashback, Zelena befriends a young woodcutter who has been cursed and turns to her for help finding a new heart. Zelena is forced to choose between keeping her powers and her friendship with him. Meanwhile, in Storybrooke, Zelena decides to take on the Black Fairy and put a stop to her, once and for all, against Regina's wishes, and the Charmings disagree over Emma and Hook's wedding plans.

Season 3: Episode 1 – Heaven just got a Little Smoother

Liv has discovered there are more zombies living in Seattle than she previously believed. In fact, there’s a private military contractor employing a small zombie army, and that army is preparing for the day humans learn of their existence. Major was exonerated for the crimes of the Chaos Killer, but is still considered a pariah. He manages to land a job with the one and only place that will hire him. Meanwhile, Blaine is accused of lying.

Welcome back to our favorite brain eater. It is interesting that IZombie is starting to take a turn towards the True Blood approach. However, they understand that if they reveal themselves as zombies to the human world, there may be some backlash from the humans. And they are right… humans would see them as brain-eating monsters, and probably fight back. The possibility of coexisting seems to be on the horizon, but it is far away. Blaine’s memory loss continues to baffle everyone. Knowing his character and his history, it is possible he could be lying to exonerate himself, or he could actually be suffering memory loss. It all makes Ravi’s research more difficult, because even he doesn’t know what to believe. It will be interesting to see how this season pans out, and what actually does happen when zombies reveal themselves. Could it be like True Blood all over again?

Season 3: Episode 2 – Zombie Knows Best

When Liv, Clive and Ravi arrive at the scene to investigate a fatal car accident, they begin to suspect foul play was involved. Both starving, Liv and Major consume the brains of the accident victims, a well-meaning father and his angsty teenage daughter. Meanwhile, when Clive is brought in for questioning about a family that was murdered, he’s forced to reveal his past history with them. Lastly, Peyton extends an olive branch to Ravi, and Major hits a road block in his search for Natalie.

One of the really good things about this show is the actors’ abilities to behave differently than the character originally is. This is seen in both the behaviors of Major and Liv this episode. We see Liv take on the persona of many people throughout the seasons, as she consumes many different brains. But to see Major doing the same was entertaining. Of course he would have to take the teenage daughter brain and add some comedy to the situation. All in all it made the episode a bit lighter than it would have been. And given Clive’s revealed dark history, we needed that comic relief.

Season 3: Episode 3 – Eat, Pray, Liv

To help Clive solve the murder of a lifestyle guru, Liv consumes his brain and takes on his Zen approach to life. Ravi’s old boss, Katty Kupps, is getting closer to discovering the truth while also getting closer to Ravi. Meanwhile, Blaine and Peyton continue their budding friendship, much to Ravi’s dismay. Lastly, Major is struggling a bit at his new job.

The crime in this episode was somewhat the back story of the situation. The main thing is that Ravi has a serum that might cure the “zombie’ issue, but it needs to be tested. Blaine is asked to help out, but does not want to remember his old life. However, now that Major is starting to feel the symptoms and side effects, we’re running out of time. This causes Ravi, probably for the first time, to lose his temper. It was interesting to see such a tense moment being handled by guru Liv, who was trying to find her sense of zen amidst all the fighting between the others. This was not a turning point episode, but it was certainly a good one to watch. And we got to hear some nice singing from Blaine.

Season 3: Episode 4 – Wag the Tongue Slowly

Clive’s patience is tested when Liv consumes the brain of a murder victim who had the reputation of being the ultimate office gossip. Meanwhile, Blaine and Peyton continue to grow closer as they wait to see if Ravi is able to reverse the effects of the cure. Lastly, Major is one step away from fulfilling a promise.

Season 12: Episode 17 – The British Invasion

Sam and Dean get a lead on Kelly Kline’s whereabouts. Mick drops by the bunker unexpectedly and decides to join the hunt.

It was very entertaining to see Dean’s reaction to Mick’s joining them on the hunt. The comment about “Hogwarts” was a perfect fit in with the two Winchesters and with the situation. As they go racing off to discuss things with Kelly, but they realize she has more company than they expected. Mick tries his best to work with the boys, but he just doesn’t quite get how they do things, and is constantly bothered by “the code” getting in the way of his own morals. It was sad to see his punishment, he was starting to grow on me, and it reveals just how ruthless the British Men of Letters can be. It could be interesting to see what fate lies in store for the Wnchesters.

Season 12: Episode 18 – The Memory Remains

Sam and Dean investigate a missing person’s case in a small town. The lead witness tells the Winchesters the attacker was a man with the head of a goat. Sam and Dean aren’t sure what to believe but when the witness goes missing they realize the town is hiding a dark secret.

This was an interesting episode; the boys went up against a god that was being fed by the townsfolk. The episode was somewhat uneventful, but had its own twists. We thought it was one person, but then it turned out to be another. Then we thought it was just humans killing humans, but then we discover there was more to the story, including a god that received offerings of human lives. But little do the Winchesters know, while they were off on this job that the Men of Letters sent them on, they were being hunted themselves. While they were being watched they spoke of legacies and had a very touching moment. Several of us ran quickly to Google to see if this was the final season of the show, because of their “legacy” talk and the scene with the initials. It was a sad moment, and either spoke of ending, or gave dark foreshadow for what is to come. What does the Men of Letters have in store for these two? Will they both survive? It will be intense, that’s for certain.

Season 12: Episode 19 – The Future

Sam comes up with a way to stop Lucifer’s baby but Castiel has something else in mind for Kelly. Dean is furious when he finds out someone stole the colt. Kelly makes a bold choice about the baby’s future.

Season 4: Episode 8 – God Complex

After a disappointing discovery, Clarke and Abby question how far they're willing to go. Meanwhile, Jaha finds a lead to the mysterious Second Dawn.

It is amazing the lengths you will go to in order to survive. And the things you will justify yourself for. Clarke had to face some of the same things she destroyed Mount Weather for in this episode, watching a man die screaming in agony, and then decide who she would test next. It was difficult to watch her and Abby discuss the situation, and realize that they would have to find a way to live with themselves after. We all knew that Clarke would make that final sacrifice, especially after what Murphy said to her. It seems that Jaha may have found the secret to the salvation of humanity. But something tells me that it will not be enough, or the different clans will not be able to get along long enough to work together. It is one thing to find a solution or a cure… it is another thing to gain the trust of everyone to ensure they get it.

Season 10: Episode 1 – The Pilot

A chance encounter with a girl with a star in her eye leads to a terrifying chase across time and space. Bill’s mind is opened to a Universe that is bigger and more exciting than she could possibly have imagined - but who is the Doctor, and what is his secret mission with Nardole on Earth?

Welcome back Doctor! And Welcome Aboard Bill! This was an interesting introduction to a new companion, as well as a new season of the show. We get the notion that the Doctor has given the TARDIS speech so many times he almost expects the comments. But Bill keeps veering in directions he can’t imagine.. like the TARDIS being like a kitchen. The story about the girl with the star in her eye was sweet and interesting enough. It was not an alien trying to attack the Earth; it was a simple mistake and lesson to be learned. The entirety of the episode was Bill learning about the Doctor, in her own quirky way. I do believe, upon first meeting this companion, I liked her straight away. It seems that we will have a lot more comedy with this season than we had in previous ones. Nicely done and welcome back.

Season 10: Episode 2 – Smile

In the far future, at the edge of the galaxy, there is a gleaming, perfect city. This brand new human settlement is said to hold the secret of human happiness - but the only smiles the Doctor and Bill can find are on a pile of grinning skulls. Something is alive in the walls, and the emojibots are watching from the shadows, as the Doctor and Bill trying to unravel a terrifying mystery..

Who ever thought Emojis would be terrifying? This episode is another example of how the things we as humans create will eventually turn on us. The emojibots were created to make a perfect world where people would be happy, but what happens if they are not? We also see the development of Bill and the Doctor’s new found friendship as they traverse this new city. She is smarter and more analytic than she lets on straight away, and it seems this impresses the Doctor. And of course, she never does as she is told… in true companion fashion. It was interesting to see how the Doctor tested her from time to time, during the scene with the map for example. This episode was creepy in its own way, but entertaining at other times. This companion is growing on me more and more.
