#prince myshkin #lev nikolayevitch myshkin #the idiot #myshkin #no but i really think there are legitimate reasons to argue that myshkin could be seen as an autistic character #other than the fact that he literally checks of every criteria #there's also the fact that there is a frequent comorbidity of epilepsy and autism #which makes me think (tho i have not nearly done enough research on this to make any actual claims)#that there is a possibility that traits which we would today associate with autism could back in the day #before the term autism even existed #could be seen as something common among epicleptic people #and given that myshkin is already canonically neurodivergent and epileptic #it really isn't a stretch to say that if we were to apply modern day terminology on a 19th century character #he could be seen as an early example of an autistic character #which makes it very interesting to note how people in the book view and interact with him #(and even without the possible autism he's still a canon neurodivergent character cast as the protagonist in a 19th century book #which on its own is really interesting #especially considering the fact that dostoyevsky drew from experiences with his own epilepsy)#for example canon infantilization (which this post is definitely a joke on) the whole 'idiot' thing etc.#also the way he views himself! he has so much internalised ableism #i also think it's interesting that another character that exhibits a lot of autistic traits is kirillov #who's also canonically epileptic #my post #vince talks

my head is covered in blue gunk that they used for all the wires & electrodes to do the sleep deprived EEG this morning and i both look and feel like i walked straight outta professor hidgens lab

If I had a nickel for every time a psychiatrist straight up told me lies I would have too fucking many and that's a problem.

#like first a psychiatrist tells me my seizures r psychological BECAUSE of my history of Forbidden Disorder and anxiety #and then they get worse and its clearly epilepsy and im on meds now and my condition was neglected bc a misdiagnosis based on stigma #and then now im like hey so i am still struggling with Forbiden Dissociative Disorder can i get some resources or a mf therapist rec #and this psych straight up tells me DID isn't a diagnosis anymore (I FOUND NO EVIDENCE OF THIS CLAIM BTW)#AND tells me my amnesia is bc of seizures.... Realized last night that my epilepsy that seemed to onset last October has actually been happening my entire life, my family just thought it was really bad night terrors or sleep walking. And as a teenager I thought I just got stuck sometimes and also that I was being haunted by 3 ghosts and that two of them wanted to kill me. reframing_my_entire_life.exe ×͜×

#probably have to change meds 🙃#idk i think i’m just a pessimist bc i always just assume that trying another med is a dead end #and that the side effects will probably be worse than whatever i’m experiencing now #but i’m also such a terrible judge of these things bc i’ve spent my whole life suffering bc of incurable disabilities #hard to stay hopeful with all that #just a month ago i was trying to address my anxiety :(#and my gastritis wasn’t an issue #and my other things weren’t issues #now my anxiety is at an all time high i have a bunch of side effects from the epilepsy meds #and i think my gastritis is flaring up #like god i can’t keep doing this i feel!!!! i keep trying to hope for better and dreaming of better #but i hate this suffering and i feel like no one has confidence that i can achieve my dreams #i love my parents and they love me but i don’t think they really think i can do it. be successful as a screenwriter #and i know that it’s the mood swings but how many times can i watch my life is murder how many times.#how long will popping on an episode every time i get anxious work? how long until i get better #rambling #anyways. sigh. life sucks rn for me what’s new

All of Diamond’s seizures start as focal seizures, and they rarely progress to bilateral tonic clonic seizures; that usually only happens if he’s unmedicated or has severely overtaxed his telepathy or magic. (Or if there’s other nonsense going on, be it injury or magic.)

His epilepsy has some magic/scifi aspects, but is more or less based on temporal lobe epilepsy. This page has a fairly quick overview and a good video!

I’m so mad I just watched the first episode of Hornblower. Only now! After finishing my dissertation! When my dissertation topic was literally the portrayal of epilepsy in film and television

#I’m FUMING #the guy who got cut loose? I think he’s dead (better fucking not be btw but he’s got exposure and dehydration to deal with + a head injury)#that’s a seizure! those were seizures!#and it’s implied he gets them fairly regularly????#I know what a seizure looks and sounds like THAT was a seizure #I’m so mad. the show NEVER came up when I was looking for seizures on screen (in fiction)#I’m so mad because A- that could have added SO SO much to my paper! epilepsy/seizures in a historical WAR drama?!??#and it’s NOT the main focus????#and B- I missed the valid opportunity to watch the show lol #also C - it was a surprisingly GOOD portrayal! like holy fuck??#I have had to sift through DECADES of film and TV representations of epilepsy/seizures #and most of it is. it’s really bad. they get so much wrong or just straight up dehumanise the character #I’ve seen a lot and there’s soooo many details that are just WRONG.#and yeah were both seizures scenes in Hornblower perfect? nah but they were clearly better than other ones #for example YOU DONT HIT SOMEONE ON THE HEAD WITH A TILLER HANDLE WHEN HES SEIZING #so if he didn’t die from THAT then it’s definitely starvation/exposure #holy shit actually thinking about it that character has got to wake up in a horror story #last thing he’ll remember is being on the launch boat with the crew and the NEXT is waking up in THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN ALONE #that’s scary #I’ve had so many seizures and tha.#that’s scary. even if you’re not loved from where it began it’s TERRIFYING #there was so much there I could have talked about!!!! one of my favorite stupid things about the shitty c-list cdramas i watch (and tbh it shows up in some of the nicer quality ones too) is when a character has some kind of incurable terminal disease that modern medicine is failing can be easily remedied with...

needles. like acupunture.

i think it's bc authors know jack and shit about medicine and can't be bothered/aren't paid enough by webnovel sites or drama producers to research specific illnesses and their treatments but it takes me out every time.

it makes sense in like...wuxia or xianxia, but when it's a modern drama it fuckin kills me. bonus points if the "modern" doctors are listening to wrist heartbeats to diagnose things like literal cancer or if there are magic chinese medicine pills that are complete cure-alls, OR if the "modern doctors" are surgeons (of all specialities, obviously) as well as general practitioners as well as specialists as well magically being renowned experts in chinese medicine and/or are like...nationally known but anonymous Secret Doctors or Magic Doctors or what-have-you.
