for what it's worth I personally don't believe spite had anything to do with the pantry near-kiss experience at all. I think that was a 100% lucanis naturel disaster no supernatural additives present or indeed required. at most spite was watching that whole situation go down with mild puzzlement about approximately every part of it, I don't think he'd have much interest in it one way or the other. the explanation seems much more mundane and grounded and in some ways much sadder to me.
if your nervous system has never been in a place where any surge of emotion, even -- in fact sometimes especially! -- a good and exciting one makes you feel like your soul just touched a hot stove it can't get away from, then sincerely, from the bottom of my heart and without a trace of snark, thank goodness and I hope you never experience it. For the rest of you... fistbump of solidarity it's rough out here but *grits teeth* we stay silly etc. In the place lucanis is in during that part of the game, feeling like you're losing control (again even for ostensibly good happy reasons) can feel an awful lot like you're dying, or worse. on top of everything else going on for him -- again going only with non-supernatural elements and not even comprehensive: a year of non-stop horrific trauma added to pile of previous mountain of childhood and attachment trauma. chronic sleep deprivation. apparently dead grandma doubling as mother figure. cousin-brother aggressively fucking around and in real danger of finding out. fucked up the ONE thing he thought he knew how to do that's been the central pillar of his identity. the world might be ending even more than it already was because of it. keeps faceplanting with barely any dignity and having to get up again with alarming regularity GOD how could I ever not save treviso this man desperately needs a W (just one!!) like few people in the history of the world have before him. he's more caffeine than man because the alternative feels worse. it's bad in here. and ON TOP of all that he's in the process of falling just. appallingly soul-shrivingly in love, which can notably be playing on hard mode even when you're in a mostly functional place, that shit routinely rocks people to the core under the best of circumstances.
so I'm not surprised it's too overwhelming for him to handle when he tries to throw himself in head first -- in fact I'd have been more surprised if it weren't lol. he clearly wants it so much, which only makes it so much more painful that he can't actually bear to touch it when it's offered to him freely and eagerly. this is the tantalus-level awfulness of this kind of attachment trauma; food seems to be right there, you can see it, almost smell it sometimes, but no matter what you just can't seem to reach it. seemingly not for any flaw in the existence of the food, but because of something broken in you that can't or can't bear to actually eat. his deliberate flirting routine is kind of deeply dorky tbh lol (in the most endearing way possible let's be perfectly clear) and I don't think it's entirely natural to him -- that's a hastily cobbled together 'oh god I am getting the vibes here it is happening for some reason they like me for my personality quick what would illario do' approach if ever I saw it, supported by the fact that it never really makes a return after this --
BUT I do think his obvious near-unbearable delight with rook's existence and person that shines through in that scene is entirely real and unfeigned. he likes them so much. he wants so bad to be able to be close to them. he's so hungry for the reprieve and release and relief they represent to him, just for one moment, just one break from all the awfulness to have something uncomplicatedly good. and it's here, it's been offered, he's welcome!!! and he has to flinch away at the last minute anyway because he's an exposed nerve of a human being. there's a point at which every sensation including joy becomes indistinguishable from agony. he's pretty much exactly at that point. for the love of god have some mercy on him people. the feeling that salvation is right here but you're too broken a vessel to hold it is one I wouldn't wish on anyone. let him have a few moments to stare into the void before he's ready to get back up and try again surely we all deserve at least that much lol
#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers#lucanis dellamorte#rook x lucanis#rookanis#this is literally just me ranting about the feelings he evokes in me and not really directed at anyone I just. I Feel. things#in case you can't tell. I'm the lucanis. him is me. we be like this. this all makes the too much kind of perfect sense to me#it's odd in narrative structure but it's uh. uncomfortably real in some ways. freeze is difficult to describe in conventional narrative#it's a bad time to have in a bad place. but very decent company to be in I must say I love him. so much#also I think we might have exposed some of the basic garrusness going on here haha (just one thing please just one good thing)#and how much getting there hinges on feeling completely safe in that relationship. anyway. everyone ok. I'm not but someone should be

Hi :)
Could I maybe get a two-for-one for your work, Deprivation? Maybe where reader takes Spencer home with them and they do some skin to skin cuddles and he just melts and sleeps for more than a plane ride?
Or if you donât like that idea, just any continuation of Spencer being so afraid of touch but desperately needing it? I feel that in my soul.
I love your work so much, youâre beyond fantastic!
SALVATION â SPENCER REID!
after spencer gets some rest on the plane ride home, you offer for him to stay the night with you.
spencer reid x gn!reader | 1.0k | h/c | masterlist.
part one.
event masterlist.
a/n â thank you so much ml, i forgot how much i loved writing stuff like this, spencer needs so many hugs man
Your apartment was warm, a comforting contrast to the sterile jet and the cold night outside.
Spencer seemed out of place at first, standing awkwardly by the door as you set your keys on the table. You could see the fatigue in his eyes, the way his shoulders slumped as if the weight of the case still clung to him.
âWhy donât you get comfortable?â you suggested gently, motioning toward the couch.
He hesitates, lingering in the doorway like heâs intruding, like heâs unceremoniously encroaching on your space despite the fact that youâd insisted he spend the night at your apartment, insisted that he was going to get a good nightâs rest even if it meant not getting one yourself.
It makes him feel bad. Guilty. You should be doing this for him, or feeling like you have to.
âSpencer,â You sigh, âPlease,â
He reluctantly relents at the hint of desperation in your tone, toeing off his shoes and sinking into the cushions of your couch. His fingers twitched nervously, his mind still racing even in the quiet.
You brewed tea in the silence, not wanting to push him into talking if he wasnât ready but wanting to offer him somethingâsomething to show that you cared, that you wanted him to feel safe and comfortable with you.
When you came back, you set the mugs on the coffee table, then sat next to him, close, but not impeding on his personal bubble.
The air felt thick with the unsaid, but you waited patiently, letting him come to you in his own time.
After a few minutes of silence echoed only through soft sips from your drinks, Spencer finally spoke, his voice small. âI⌠I canât seem to turn my brain off. Itâs like, no matter how exhausted I am, I canât stop thinking about everything. Itâs just⌠always there.â
Your heart ached for him. You could see how much he was carrying, how much he was trying to hold together on his own.
âYou donât have to do that tonight,â you said softly, reaching out to place a hand on his arm. âYou donât have to keep holding it all together.â
He looked at you, his eyes glassy with exhaustion and something deeper. Vulnerability. âI donât know how to⌠stop.â
You scooted closer, your fingers gently brushing his. âCome here,â you whispered, your voice gentle but firm. âSkin-to-skin contact can help calm your nervous system. Let me hold you for a while,â
Spencerâs eyes widened slightly, but he didnât pull away.
You were really pulling his own moves against him.
And you werenât even wrong. It would indeed chemically help calm down his nervous system through releasing oxytocin and serotonin, not to mention promoting activity of the oxytocinergic system.
So there was no excuse to not listen to you.
Slowly, cautiously, he allowed you to take his hand and guide him toward you. You both shed your outer layersâhe pulled off his sweater, and you slipped out of your own long-sleeved shirt, leaving the soft barrier of your undershirts between you.
You pulled him into your embrace, wrapping your arms around him as he rested his head against your chest, your warmth surrounding him.
At first, Spencer was stiff, as if unsure how to allow himself to relax into you. But gradually, the tension in his body began to melt.
Your hands stroked soothing circles on his back, your heartbeat steady and grounding beneath his cheek. You could feel the way his breathing began to even out, slow and deep, as if the weight of the world was finally starting to lift.
âYouâre safe,â you murmured, your lips brushing the top of his head. âItâs okay to rest.â
Spencer let out a shaky breath, his hands curling gently into your shirt as he allowed himself to surrender to the comfort you offered.
He pressed closer, his body seeking the warmth and safety that came with your touch, revelling in what heâd lost from you after the plane had landed back in D.C.
For the first time in what felt like forever, his mind began to quiet. The intrusive thoughts that normally plagued him began to fade, replaced by the rhythmic rise and fall of your chest, the gentle hum of your voice as you whispered reassurances into the dark.
âIâm still so tired,â he confessed, his voice breaking slightly as the weight of the admission hit him. âI know I slept on the plane butâŚâ
âI know,â you whispered back, shaking your head softly and holding him tighter. âYou donât have to fight it anymore. Just sleep.â
And for the first time in weeks, maybe even months, Spencer allowed himself to let go. His body melted into yours, his breathing deepening as the exhaustion finally caught up to him.
Within minutes, he was asleep, completely relaxed in your arms.
You held him as he slept, your fingers still running through his hair, your heart swelling with a fierce protectiveness. He deserved thisâthis peace, this comfortâand you would give it to him for as long as he needed.
And as Spencer slept, you could almost see the tension lift from his features, his body finally at ease. He looked peaceful, truly peaceful, in a way you hadnât seen in far too long.
You stayed there with him, letting him rest, knowing that when he woke up, youâd still be there, ready to hold him again. Ready to remind him that he wasnât alone.

Info time: Diabetes and related issues [this is long but I highly suggest reading]
Do you ever see something and you go "that doesn't sound right, but I don't know enough about diabetes to dispute it"? Well, I can help you there. I can help you know enough about diabetes to dispute it if need be. Especially because well, there are seemingly a lot of scams going around where people claim to be diabetic [in my experience it's maybe 3 scammers that just remake] and the information is not very correct in most cases. Not to mention this type of scam pisses me off because I am in fact diabetic, and not only are people preying off of others' lack of information about the chronic condition, but it's also trivializing a serious lifelong condition that can be fatal. If you have now or have lost a loved one to diabetes complications, you are already aware of how dangerous it can be as well as how dangerous misinformation is as well.
What is diabetes? Diabetes is a chronic condition related to the endocrine system- the pancreas specifically. However, if complications get serious enough other parts of the body will be affected. In type 2 diabetes, the body's cells have become resistant to insulin, which is a hormone produced by the pancreas that allows cells to use glucose from the blood- your body's energy it needs to function. When someone is 'type 2', the food that person is eating is not able to fuel them, regardless of caloric content. Glucose is commonly called "blood sugar". It's a type of sugar that is processed and then transported via the circulatory system to your cells where it's needed. With type 1 diabetes (which used to be called "juvenile diabetes"), the pancreas does not produce any/enough insulin for some reason or another, generally because of autoimmune or other damage. [For me personally, I was diagnosed as an adult and had to have it confirmed as type 1 due to the presence of autoimmune antibodies, also apparently my pancreas hadn't quite given up at that point.] As we've seen before, insulin allows your body to use the food you are putting into it. As a double whammy, you can have type 1 with resistance, so not only is your body not producing any/enough insulin, what's there can't be used properly. [RIP Spider who has this] So to explain the effects, think about what happens when you're literally starving. Now imagine that's happening no matter how much you eat. Your body may go into starvation mode and store fat. This can be misleading, which when combined with fatphobia has people concluding that "well, you have diabetes because you're fat, duh". Heck, I have/had diabetic relatives who believed that eating too many carbs will automatically cause the condition because that's what everyone is told/assumes. Eventually, you'd starve and your body would start deteriorating as so. HOWEVER because you would have so much glucose that just sits there because it can't be used, your kidneys are going to work overtime to try and correct this- and they can't do it alone. Your liver can also suffer severe damage. That's not to mention a whole host of other complications that can occur.
So what about it? Well, obviously there are treatments. Insulin injections have existed since the 1920s. There are also medications that can help your body actually use the insulin it's being provided, be it naturally or artificially. So yes, people with diabetes are dependent on prescriptions to survive. My grandma lost a sister in childhood due to insulin treatments apparently not being available in the extremely rural area they were living in at the time. More recently, the israeli occupation has banned insulin from being distributed to Palestinians. [Insulin has also been used historically in psychiatric hospitals to force low blood sugar in psychiatric patients, but that's a whole other rabbithole about psychiatric abuse.] There are resources for the US and beyond if you or someone you know and/or love are in dire straits financially and need help with insulin or other diabetes medications/ related medical help. That's only one aspect of treatment, though. Because pain, stress, hormone changes, other medical issues, and plenty of other factors can raise your blood sugar to dangerous levels, other kinds of treatment to manage other factors may be necessary.
Now that that's out of the way, let's get to specifics. So the most common problem you're going to see mentioned is high blood sugar. We've already covered what the effects are, but what is considered high? For the most part, "high" is 200 milligrams per deciliter. My CGM (continuous glucose monitor) lists "high" as anything 181 or higher but stops giving an exact number after 350. This is why I had a good laugh that time I saw a scammer using an image of a meter reading glucose in the 120s- that's good blood sugar. If you're going to get even more specific you want your pre-breakfast blood sugar to be 80-130. So when you see an accompanying image reading in the 500s, that's extremely dangerous. That's "you're in danger of going into a coma" dangerous.
Insulin pricing? How come I'm seeing people saying they need $300? In the US, pricing cap was set to $35 somewhat recently. What this means is that per insulin pen (as far as I've experienced, the above-linked resource post should have links with better clarification) it's $35. Can't be more than that for one pen. How many doses that provides is very up in the air. It absolutely varies from person to person. I have relatives with type 2 that have to inject a dose of very long-acting insulin weekly, one has gone back and forth with daily doses on top of that. I'm type 1 and have to take one dose of long-acting nightly with injections of a short-acting insulin before every meal, with the exact dosage amounts varying per meal. Insulin is measured in units (there's probably an actual mL amount, both of mine are 100 units per mL with a 3mL pen). How many units someone needs is determined with their medical provider (or care team? When I went to 'diabetes education' after diagnosis I was set up with a "care team").
Edited:
["...pharmacies can refuse to split boxes of insulin pens depending on company/store policy. so if someone lost their insulin and needed to get a replacement because insurance wont pay for more, the pharmacy could make them get a full box of three or five pens."]
via: anon ask (thank you much!!!) So it turns out that yes, with $35 being a cap it would very much likely be for EACH pen, with 3 being $105 in this case and 5 being $175.
But at any rate, if someone is in an emergency situation in the US should be able to get an insulin pen for $35 pretty much when they get to a pharmacy [again, from edit: no, not every pharmacy]. Yes, I get that this can be difficult in some situations, but that's outside the concept of insulin prices.
If someone's blood sugar is over 500 though, they almost certainly need a hospital more than they need an insulin pen. Yes, alright, the actual real single mother on twitter who was the source of the profile images/meter images that whatever the current url for vero-og has stolen and been using for months... that was actually months ago and I'm sure she doesn't need to be told to go to the hospital right now. [That said, if you get an ask from someone and the url is a variation off of 'vero-og' that is a confirmed scammer.] And then on top of that, yes, why would you block people that can get you free or discounted insulin? If someone was offering to save your life for free or find you what you need for far less than what you were expecting to spend, why wouldn't you take it? Unless what you're actually after is money.
SO TO RECAP: Insulin does not cost $300, $350, $370, whatever someone is sending you an ask about. In the US, it is federally capped at $35 per pen, with further resources available, as well as further resources being available internationally. If you need help, please be honest about it. I promise there are people who care, you don't have to try and explain yourself- but it absolutely does not cost that much and if it did, there are ways to lower the cost by quite a bit if there aren't resources to make it free. Diabetes is a lifelong chronic condition that is not caused by "being fat" or "eating too much", it is caused by your body not functioning right and your body can starve no matter how much food you eat. Unfortunately, people have been lying on this site for months if not years claiming to have type 1 with an insulin emergency. These people cannot possibly have diabetes, or they would be well aware that they do not need hundreds of dollars to get their insulin. They are counting on you not knowing this so you will donate to them. The 'vero-og' scammer had been harassing someone who donated and threatening them with the intention of bullying more money out of the donor.

this reads like a childrenâs church skit. like 9 year olds horribly re-enacting biblical scenes. iâm so here for it
And they hated her because she told them the truth!
Anyway, yes, God under the Trinity Doctrine is a protogenic system.
You know those silly anti-endo posts about "reclaiming" terms and flags made by endogenic systems?
Well, guess what? We're reclaiming your God now!
The Holy Trinity is officially a pro-endo protogenic system. Take that anti-endos! /lh
#plurality#endos literally have such bluepilled talking points itâs insane#tbh i just feel sorry for the ones who are like#*actual* systems and get sucked down the endo misinformation rabbit hole#or ppl who are schizo-spectrum and are led to believe that their delusions are real and valid#tbh thereâs just a completely toxic community around very real mental illnesses#and i notice that a lot of endos are likeâŚvery young. like 15-18#and the thing about that is u are a horrible person at that age no matter how are u try not to be#and i think that plus the stress of just. being 15-18 creates this need to compattmentalize your feelings#and in this era of technology where information about DID became widely available very quickly#of course they would try to reclaim that specific kind of symptom#because it gives them everything they need!!#who wouldnât want to be able to pin their outbursts on someone else?#who doesnât enjoy the idea of being comforted by your favorite fictional characters?#etc etc.#and those are the talking points that draw ppl into the endo community#but they miss the fact that OSSDID is not just a dissociative disorder but a complex structure of disorders#within a very traumatized brain#so thereâs very often comorbidities like ocd/bpd/bipolar/insomnia/schizo-spectrum disorders/depression/anxiety/etc.#i think young pplâs desire to compartmentalize and abstract themselves definitely needs to be talked about more#because kids are not smart#they will assimilate and say shit and let misinformation that fits their narrative spread like wildfire#but itâs because they DONT KNOW ANY BETTER#now that being said#if youâre a grown ass endo system/supporter#idek what to say. i hope your health insurance covers lobotomies ig?

I think the Chain needs to be more...idk "weird". So here's some ideas on what I mean. Not all of them are are in depth as I would like sadly.
Time: Clocks stop working right around him. Either they stop all together or they start skipping seconds at random intervals, sometimes the clocks will start going backwards.
Yet no matter how messed up the clock gets, by the time Time leaves the area the clock is telling time normally again.
If Time's shadow splits it will always appear as if a silhouette of a child is to his right and a faint emaciated figure is to his left. His own shadow tells the tale of his terrible fate.
Speaking of shadows.
Twilight: His shadow, no matter what, is always darker than normal. Noticeably darker.
Predators out in the wild, such as wolves, lions, and what not, are either afraid of the Rancher and flee, or just watch him from a safe distance. As long as Twi is with the group, they don't have to worry about any random animal attack.
Four: As the wielder of the Four Sword, Four's shadow is always split in four ways. Since the Smithy helped the Minish, he will randomly find extra Rupees in his pockets and bag with no memory of how he got them.
Wind: The sailor knows exactly where he's going when out at sea. Even without a map. He just knows. The air around him carries an extremely faint scent of saltwater.
Legend: The Vet's enchantments are alien to his own Hyrule. They didn't come from Lorule either.
Strangely, Sky seems to recognize the magic that envelops the Vet's gear.
Hyrule: The treads on the Traveler's boots seem to change to whatever he needs them to be, never wearing down. His own steps are either loud enough to draw attention to him or so quiet to the point of his steps being silent, but the way he walks doesn't change. It just happens.
If the group encounters a fairy, it will always approach Hyrule first before swirling around Time.
Wild: Stal monsters will always go after Wild first. Sensing the fact that he should be dead, and feeling a sort of jealousy at his resurrection.
Non-Guardian/Zonai automatons have an extremely hard time locking onto the Champion. Their IFF (Identify Friend Foe) system constantly misidentifies him as an ally. Possible side ability of the Slate, but it's happened before without it on his person.
Warriors: The Captain knows. He knows things that no one expects him to know. He can tell when people hide secrets from him, and can tell when people have secrets to hide. Even if he's never met the person.
Sky: Due to being the first (technically second) Link, he is always identified as Link in any Hyrule they visit. This effect can even trip up other Zelda's.
The Goddess statues seem to glow with a faint golden hue whenever Sky is nearby.
(Here's even more Chain "weirdness")

Lots of her peers are on their first divorces and some of them even have kids and Taylor seemingly hasn't done that in her journey to world domination and I think people are selectively forgetting that in wishing her marry this man she's only known for a year and a half. Even if it is happening I think it's kinda gross how a lot of so called fans of The Taylor Swift don't consider her truly successful until she's wedded, or at least engaged. Gross gross gross gross gross.
this whole thing goes into a neat phenomenon ive rambled about in many a mutuals tags which is taylors tightrope walk of gender performance. This ties some ways into gaylor and ndlor but i find taylors sort of cartoonish understanding of femininity and her attempts and failure to adhere to it such a fascinating undercurrent to her career. The fact that theres a massive amount of lesbian rumors around her and there have been for most of her career by itself regardless of the rumors credibility says something about how people look at her as a woman. She sort of obsessively curates her looks to conform with whatever current idea of feminine beauty is popular at any given moment but is also someone who just exudes this sot of full body awkwardness and desperate energy that kind of undermines her attempts at complete conformity. She is popular insofar as when everyone decides that they like her, and despite seeming to know fucking everybody she seems like a lonely and solitary person who writes about feeling disconnected and cut off socially (tangent about envy of her lovers in her music goes here). She has never been "cool" except for the moment from like 2013 to late 2015 where being uncool and awkward and kind of socially inept WAS cool and she rode that fucking high to the moon until it crashed and shattered into a million pieces and nearly killed her. Her being such a social target no matter her popularity or trendiness or how much she tries to conform to others is something that clearly kills her and something she still hasnt really deconstructed even as shes tried to several times through her art. That sort of confusion and alienation is actually a part of her art that ive always deeply connected with as someone whose gone most of my life without even a self diagnosis and never knew what was "wrong" with me or what made people seemingly impusively target me as someone who could be ridiculed without pushback and seemed to be constantly breaking silent rules.
This response has gone kind of extremely off topic and out of control and barely relates to your ask sorry its the vodka iced tea running thru my system. I do agree theres a massive amount of misogynistic pressure on taylor to properly perform and recreate gender norms as expected, its a massive part of the fervor surrounding travlor specifically bc theyre the complete encapsulation of white american heterosexuality and people desperately want taylor to finally fold herself completely into that world of conformity even if what they like about taylor is her inability to conform.
#ask#anonymous#taylor swift#im saying ndlor instead of autismlor bc people are VERY tetchy and weird aby the word autism and they will yell at me for it

I think a big reason that certain trans men are just kinda doing 2010s Meninism But Gay is cuz they view being a man (or a woman, for that matter) as, like, simply an identity. It's a set of pronouns, it's a thing you inject once a week, it's self-contained and exists only within the context of the self, they seem to think.
But like, on a solely internal scale, gender is next to meaningless. Gender is about how the world interacts with us, and how we are able to interact with the world and those around us. And like, in our society, men are the beneficiaries of so many systems, both codified and informal! Being a man, being a woman, in my opinion, is so much less about any internal sense of feeling, and so much more about, like, material positioning in our world.
And like where you're positioned for shit you don't get to choose is not an individual indictment either way, it's just a neutral statement of fact. Even if you don't want to be positioned above or below others based on your status or non status within a group, you still are positioned that way! I could like, stop identifying as a woman or 'queer', and I would still be subject to the marginalizations that i currently face (source: I literally tried for a year, didn't fucking work). I could choose not to identify as a settler, but I would still have the privileges that come along with that.
I mean it basically comes down to whether or not we want to look at the world materially or not: do we believe that existence precedes essence? I don't consider myself a woman because I consider myself a woman. I consider myself a woman because social forces act upon me and position me as such.
If I want to create a map of an area, should I first draw the map or survey the land? If I choose to not draw a lake on spot on the map where a lake truly is, will that lake cease to exist outside of the map? Of course not! If I choose to ignore the existence of the lake, I am only doing so out of stubbornness or personal convenience.

The subliminal messages between vol 1 and vol 42; My theory
I saw someone point out "the heroes in the background are no longer painted red. Is there any significance?" And personally. I think there is. Or at least, I think it's a neat theory.
(Horikoshi loves his easter eggs and hidden messages)
Vol 1 to vol 42 side by side comparison.
Here's why:
"Nothing Is Nobler Than Self Sacrificeâ
From the beginning of the show, we're shown that Toshinori Yagi, or better known as All Might, is the symbol of peace. The strongest. THE number ONE hero. He is seen as someone that people look up to and rely on for peace in Japan. But where does that leave him? Well...
It leaves him in a position where people are overly reliant on him. Partially due to people not really viewing heroes as people and moreso as these powerful gods who are to save the day, and in part because of his own character flaws. Toshi, as his All Might persona, is always protecting and saving people with a smile no matter what. He's depicted as enthusiastic and kind of your typical stereotypical hero you'd see in comics. But as Toshi, he's more reserved. But as both, he's very optimistic and...
Self sacrificial.
There's no way to sugar coat it. I love him a lot but Toshi is a martyr type character. He sees himself as someone who everyone needs to rely on. Even to the point where he keeps going after his life altering injuries after his fight fight with All For One. But because of this. He tends to do things on his own. Thinking he can bear the brunt of being that symbol for everyone. Even Night Eye told him if he kept on that route he is going to die.
Now this is where Izuku comes in. Toshi chose Izuku because he had the same characteristics of what he himself believes to be the essence of a true hero. Which, I believe is true to some degree. The only problem is Izuku originally had the same tendencies to self sacrifice and sees himself as someone who has to do this on his own. And he did almost go down the same self destructive path Toshi did... Except for the fact that....
Izuku had his support system knock some sense into him. Class 1A prevented Izuku from going down the same path Toshi was going to go down. They told him that they would tackle the threat of the villains with togetherness. That it wasn't going to be an "I" but rather a "we".
The symbol of peace is a pillar. But pillars cannot hold a structure with only one. There has to be multiple helping. And that was one of the lessons in the series.
All this to say...
I believe, that having the heroes in red, and the heroes of the next generation in color was intentional. Because...
All Might thought he could do it all on his own with his desire to be the symbol of peace. Pushing others away in the process and having an overreliance on him and him alone. But...
But with Izuku, he got over that hurdle. And they all became symbols of peace to help lead the next generation. Together.

Line That Leads To You
Pairing: Sirius Black x Fem! Reader AU: Soulmate AU CW: Language, Genre: Angst with a happy ending (don't worry guys) Summary: You make Sirius realize that having a soulmate isnât all that badâ that he too, will have his happily ever after.
Note: One of my favorite tropes to write, soulmate AUs! Sirius just needs love and affirmation. I love writing for this! Enjoy! Picture is from pinterest, credits to the owner!
You know, Sirius never really believed in those pesky soulmates stuff. It irks him to no end, and makes his head hurt.
The topic makes him snappy, bitter, and it leaves him feeling angry. To whom? The worldâ the one whoâs responsible for everything that has to do with soulmates. He thinks it is a bunch of bollocks. Itâs a pathetic little concept that everyone seems to be too invested in.
Sirius would be very much happy to tell you it doesnât really end with a happily-ever-after.
âIâm telling you, Prongs. Itâs just a bunch of crap.â Sirius tells James one time at the drawing room in the Potter Manor. James shakes his head, disagreeing with his best mate.
âIt isnât always like Walburga and Orion, Pads.â James gently tells him, eyes swimming with empathy for Sirius. âJust look at me, Lily and I are together, finally.â Sirius canât help but scoff, shaking his head in a disagreeing manner.
âThatâs because you were already pathetically in love with her before you even knew she was the one, Prongs. Same thing for Lily, but she was quite stubborn trying to deny what she felt about you. You guys are actually made for each other.â James lets out a laugh, the memories resurfacing making a love-struck smile appear on his face (Sirius gave him a disgusted look)
âThatâs what soulmates are, Pads. Youâre supposed to complete each other, balance the other person outâ He pursed his lips and sighed, thereâs no way Prongs could understand his opinion on the matter.
Complete each other, huh?
Then can someone give him a reasonable excuse on why his parents broke each other? One descended into madness; the other doesnât really seem to care as long as the noble house of Black lineage will continue.
Sirius bites his bottom lip, deep in thought as he stares at his pinky, willing the connection to be seen; a red string that was tied into a bow that leads to Merlin-knows-where. It serves as a connection; the string that he and only his soulmate can see whenever they want. He tugs on it curiously, awaiting any reaction with bated breath. He almost scrambled away when he felt the other end also tug it. Sirius was utterly terrified, a shiver crawled up to his system, itâs foreign feeling for the Blackâs eldest son. It made everything feel too real. A fact that he desperately tries to deny.
That night, before they returned to Hogwarts as sixth year students was the last time he ever willed to see the annoying little string in his pinky, not caring if his supposed other half was finding him or already found him.
Maybe it had to do with his twisted upbringing. He saw how his father cut the string tying him to their mother, the purple string that bound them together turning gray and withering away.
He saw how Regulus flinched, no one shouldâve seen a scene like that, but they did. Someone severing their connection to someone who shouldâve been with them through better or for worse, the one that fate intended for them. Their life got worse just after that, forcing him to flee and leave his younger brother behind at the deranged hands of Walburga Black.
âYou should eat more, Reggie.â You turned towards the quiet and reserved Slytherin, pushing his plate closer to him, which made him wince. âI am quite full.â You raised a brow âNone sense, all you did was sip pumpkin juice so you better do as I say or Iâll tell Evan and Junior.â
âDo you know that you boss people around quite well?â He grumbles, shoving a few spoonsful of dinner in his mouth as you hummed in approval, cracking a small smile. âI was told.â Your eyes flickered to the Gryffindor table, it seemed to gravitate you, pulling you in.
Looking down at your pinky, you willed the string to be visible to you. Seeing the red string attached to Sirius Black made your stomach churn; was it butterflies? Unease? You donât particularly know, having mixed reactions to the string that leads to your other half.
Youâve known for over a year now, keeping it to yourself as you quickly figured out that he wants nothing to do with his soulmate.
âReggie! Reggie!â
You exclaimed, slapping the poor boyâs arm as he was currently staying in the L/n Manor. He looked in your direction, quite annoyed, he was interrupted reading his book. âIâm reading, Y/n. You know, you should too. Itâll do you some good.â He sassed, trying to find which part he stopped reading. âMy soulmate! They tugged the string!â You gushed, âThey must be looking for me too, right?â You asked no one in particular, you can still feel the tingles you felt, how your heartbeat picked up, and how you felt like you were in could nine.
Quite the opposite from what Sirius felt, huh?
You never told him, never planned to. It was quite clear what his views are on the concept of soulmates when you saw him snogging different girls every week. It wrecked you; you swore you felt your heart stop beating every time you see him loving a girl other than you even just for a week. It sounds stupid and all, but you would give up everything just to know what it feels like; how he will look at you with love and adoration in his eyes, how his touch and kisses would linger on your body, and how his voice would sound like as his breath fans in your ear, whispering promises of love.
You looked at him from the Slytherin table; so close yet so far.
Regulus noticed, the all too familiar broken look in your face. His heart hurts for you, even if you do not tell him, he already knows. Seeing his brotherâs indifference, Regulusâs gaze hardened. How could he have the guts to do this to his soulmate?
The memory of their mother's despair, the way she withered away after their father severed the bond, was etched into his mind. Regulus does not wish for anyone to feel that way, he does not wish upon it even in his worst enemies.
It was a pain no one should endure, a lesson that should have been learned.
Yet there sat his brother, laughing with his friends and willfully ignoring the pulls of his heart. The person who held the other end of this unseen tether, was beside Regulus. Your soul ached as you watched your soulmate. It was a betrayal of the heart's deepest connection, and it stirred a tempest of fury within Regulus that he struggled to contain.
âMy brother is foolish. Eat.â He states, pushing your food and placing the cornbread on his plate to yours. She cracks a smile, chuckling. âAlright, Reggie. Youâre lucky I love you.â You pat his curls, proceeding to eat the bread, smiling a little. Reggie never really shares his food with anyone, except for you. Youâre the only exception.
âPadfoot.â Remus starts, looking out of the window as Sirius lays down lazily in his bed, looking at nothing.
âWhat, Moons?â
âIf I say that I have an inkling on who your soulmate is, would you⌠look for them?â Remus asked cautiously. Peter and James perked up, eyes wide with shock. How could Remus possibly guess who his soulmate is? Unless⌠Theyâre also in Hogwarts?
âDonât start with that crap, Moony.â Sirius sat up; a scowl displayed in his features as his grey eyes turned stormy.
âDonât you even feel the slightest amount of guilt in your system as you snog other girls?â Remus frowned.
Siriusâs scowl deepened, his hands clenching into fists. âGuilt? For what, Moony? For not wanting to be chained down by some ancient magic?â His voice was a low growl, barely containing the emotions that surged within him. âI wonât be dictated by fate. I make my own choices, and I refuse to be bound by a bond I never asked for.â
Remusâs expression softened, the lines of concern etching deeper into his face. âItâs not about being chained, Pads. Itâs about finding someone who complements you, who understands you in ways no one else can.â He paused, his gaze steady and piercing. âYouâve seen what happens when that bond is severed. Youâve seen the pain it causes. Is that what you want for yourself? For your soulmate whoâs probably hurting somewhere?â
Sirius looks down, biting his lip and playing with the rings on his fingers. âI donât plan on severing our bond, Moons- â
âThen what the fuck are you doing?â Remus spat, Sirius flinched, looking at anything but them. He knew deep down that Remus was right. He canât deny he also wants to look for his soulmate. The only thing that was holding him back is that heâs scared. What if your story would end similarly like how Walburga and Orionâs did? Dread fills his system as he reflects on how he slowly realized heâs becoming like his father. Peter and James exchanged a glance, the weight of the conversation settling heavily upon them.
âIâm scared,â he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. âScared of finding her⌠Scared of repeating the same mistakes.â He paused, his gaze lifting to meet Remusâs. âBut youâre right. I canât keep running from this. Itâs not fair to them, and itâs not fair to me.â
James offered a supportive smile, feeling happy for his friend. Sirius stood up, his posture straightening as if shedding the weight of his fears. âIâll do it. Iâll find her,â he declared, his voice steady. âI owe it to both of us to at least try.â
âThatâs our Padfoot.â Remus breathes a sigh of relief as Peter nods encouragingly at Sirius.
The next daylight soon came. Sirius gulps, looking around the great hall, feeling quite overwhelmed at the number of students entering for breakfast, eating, or chatting amongst themselves. For the first time in a long time, he willed the red string of fate to reappear within his vision.
Ah, there it was. The red string connected to someone from the Slytherin table. Sirius felt his heart drop, seeing the end of the string connected to your pinky. âY/n?â The name left his lips in a hushed awe, his heart skipping a beat as he saw the string connected to your pinky. You, who laughed with such ease beside Regulus, were the missing piece.
Whether it was some brotherly instinct, Regulus looked at him, shooting him a warning stare as if to say: âIf you hurt her, youâll never see the light of day ever again.â
Remus raised his eyebrows in surprise, knowing eyes set on his friend. âFound her, Pads?â
âYeah. Found her, Moony.â
âThen what are you waiting for?â James chimed in, a grin spreading across his face as Peter silently cheers him on. âGo on, before you lose your nerve.â
Sirius took a deep breath, trying to shake off the weight of Regulusâs protective stare. It was a silent challenge, a vow to keep your heart safe from his brother. With a nod of acknowledgment, Sirius stepped forward, crossing the small distance between the Gryffindor table and Slytherin.
âY/n,â he said, standing before you, the red string pulsing with a life of its own.
You stilled, slowly looking in his direction. Eyes wide with surprise, searched his for a moment before softening. âI was wondering when youâd come around,â you teared up, making Siriusâ heart ache.
Sirius extended his hand, the red string wrapping around both your destinies. âLetâs talk, yeah?â
And in that moment, as your fingers intertwined, Sirius knew that whatever the future held, he had made the right choice. For in finding you, he had found a new path that began to unravel, one filled with hope and courage. The buzz of Great Hall continued, but both of them felt time still, feeling the bond weave into their souls deeper.
Siriusâs and Y/nâs story had its flaws, but it was theirs, uniquely woven by the red strings of fate.

WIP excerpt behind the cut; âTimâs free cloning lab ( and all that that implies )â. (( chrono || non-chrono ))
âOh my god!â Steph wheezes, clapping a hand on his shoulder as she doubles over cackling. âRed, I refuse to be godmother but I need to be your lab assistant. Please, please let me be your lab assistant.âÂ
âI donât trust you to follow OSHA protocols to my standards,â Tim retorts darkly, trying not to die of mortification as Luthor just raises an eyebrow at them.Â
Honestly, he has no idea why Luthorâs sourcing someone else to make himâgrandchildren, apparently. He canât imagine Luthor trusting anyone elseâs work, for one, and also Kon would literally adore any fucking kid anyone ever presented him with no matter who or where they came from. Though admittedly, dormant mind control triggers would be an obvious concern in anyone Luthor personally made, so . . .Â
Tim is going to need to set up so many security systems before he does this.Â
. . . not that he is going to do this, because he and Kon are not in fact dating and therefore definitely have not discussed whether or not Kon even personally wants kids or when he might want them or anything like that.Â
WhichâTim is both completely positive that Kon does personally want kids and equally positive that Kon thinks he canât ever have them, but that is not the point here.

So is Worm good from what you have read
"Yes" doesn't begin to cover it but yes. Worm is a brain-rewiring mobius strip disguised as a bible disguised as a superhero web serial that either cured your cancer or shot your dog or both depending on who you ask, and it has many extremely dedicated, brilliant scholar priest surgeons publicly dissecting it on this platform on the regular to the point I don't think I have much to add to the conversations surrounding it, even if I do have some The Thoughts about it. I had never even really seriously thought about superhero prose before and Worm isn't a thing I go back and reread frequently but it did a complete and total 180 on the way I think about superheroes and even fiction, and I've never stopped thinking about it since I've read it.
It is a monumentally impressive story with completely absolutely incredible characters that I cannot stop thinking about. No matter where it was going, even past stretches that were less interesting or more of a slog to read or worse, I could not put the story of Taylor Hebert down for one minute. Tattletale fascinated me every step of the way, I had to keep up with her. Rachel Lindt was a character I feel like I'd been waiting my whole life for. What was I gonna do, not see them through? I feel like Worm easily loses you if you don't particularly connect with the characters enough to justify to yourself the amount of time you'll spend with them, but man, I could not unglue my eyeballs from these people enough (I love all the core Undersiders, to be clear, I'd say it's Rachel > Taylor > Tattletale > Aisha and Alec and Brian, there are very small gaps between these, I just don't go berserk for the last three like I do for the first three, I'm taking Bitch and Skitter to the grave I'm dead serious)
Everybody who read it has one or several gripes with it with some major dealbreakers in the mix. Tumblr's kinda the only place online where you can really talk about them at length without the spectre of John Wildbow hanging over the discussion, which enables discussion to the point where yes, maybe it does look like to outsiders that nobody can agree on whether Worm is good or what is it even about or whether it even has worms in it (it has at least one, although it's a very big one).
And it is good, it has the Undersiders in it and the Undersiders are one of the greatest groups of characters ever put together, but everyone has at least one major point of contention with Worm whether it's the timeskip or the length or the racism or the gross fatphobia or aspects surrounding the Dallon-Pelham Torment Nexus and etc. I'd say it has maybe the most racist vision of Latin America I've ever seen in a superhero text a hair short of pro-colonial tracts in Golden Age comics and that is a tall fucking order by any metric (part of why I started WEON4 as a project was motivated by spite, to try and make my own stories about non-American superheroes even if just as practice). It is Complicated, and that winds up making it so fascinating to talk about.
Worm has self-sustaining ecological systems of posts up here, far away from the Spacebattles and Reddit battlegrounds where it has different ones and that's not getting into Weaverdice or the sequel or Wildbow's larger body of work, which I haven't gotten to and probably will not any time soon because Worm was enough of a commitment as is. Do I recommend Worm to everyone? It is certainly not to everyone's tastes and I personally find it difficult to describe it simply enough to make it sound appealing or not like a pyramid scheme. But yes I do think it's good, in fact great, in fact, amazing, except when it isn't, and except it Plainly Sucks, but then something like Taylor vs Mannequin or Kevin Norton's interlude or "You needed worthy opponents" happens and it fucks harder than anything has ever fucked before and you don't walk away from it the same, so yes I guess "good" will have to do now.
It's certainly a lot but I definitely found it worth my time to read and then read the texts written about it here. You'll have to take my endorsement of Worm as proof of it's quality and proof of how deranged it makes it's readerbase, they're not mutually exclusive. If you can make it, Worm and the wormosphere has layers and layers to wade through and talk about and enjoy, despite how we're all so very small in the end *gunshot*.

sighs dramatically.
Okay but the ghost distribution system as we call it is hysterical but can we tlak about how None Of The 141 are built to date.
Like, sure, Gaz is great at flirting, and he's charming, but DATES? He's the type who asks you on a date because he thinks youre pretty/handsome/adorable/etc but by the time the two of you actually go on a date he's ready figured out like. the whole rest of your lives together. He's already imagined up 20 different scenarios of different dates, stalked your front-facing social media and found your secret or hidden accounts that theoretically don't link back to you. Sure, he's scrounged through your discord servers and your private messages and texts and a thousand other things while he was bored on leave. He knows enough to know that he's happy with what comes next. All dates are simply... ritual at this point? Something obligational, other than the fact he gets to spend time with you.
You're not going anywhere, he's just the least heavy handed of them, the one who'll let you think its your choice to keep him around until he's got his ring officially on your finger. Life won't go according to plan but he's prepared for that too. In his head, you're already married anyway, he's just working his way up to that part. He'll manufacture any scenario to keep you with him, because he wants you to be. And he'll make sure you want to be too.
Soap on the other hand is WAY less tactful about it. He's charming, and he'll take you on dates, sure, but the moment he spots you it's incredibly easy to get obsessed. He immediately drops an arm around you, purring in your ear and talking to you. Doesn't ask you on a date so much as demands it, puts his number in your phone and presses a kiss to your temple, his fingertips squeezing your chin before you leave. God forbid you let him into your home - he'll never leave if you do. Johnny's SUCH a physical guy that while, yes, personality matters, it seals the deal for him the moment he's got his tongue down your throat and his fingers in your pants. Something about the way you settle in against him makes him feel like he's home, and you will never get rid of him.
He's willing to take you on dates if you need more proof, but he won't even pretend like he doesnt already have a copy of your key. Like he's not telling the guys about the bonnie little thing he's going home to - he slips into your apartment/house/etc and into your bed without changing, barely finding time to slip his boots off. Presses one hand to your mouth and just... holds you. He'll fuck you within an inch of your life later when you're less panicked, sure, but he just wants to press his nose to your neck and breathe you in. If his hips rut against your ass, ignore it for now. (Haha... unless? No? okay in a minute then)
Price is just as manipulative as Gaz can be, just as charming as Soap and Gaz too. But he just... doesn't care, just like Simon. There's a reason so many people have Price with like... mail order bride or a "one day you look up and hes your husband" scenario and thats because he's good at what he does. And by that I mean being a husband and pumping you full of kids whether or not its physically possible. (Btw check out Ceil's mail order bride western au its good shit, or Bo's Kingpin Price drabbles, makes me lose it every time.)
He sees you walking about and the MOMENT you do anything remotely domestic - pick up a neice/nephew/babysitting kid/etc and put em on your hip? Rock hard. play peekaboo with a baby across from you at a cafe? pick up after yourself just to be polite to the waitress? he's already stalking you on multiple platforms theres no goddamn way youre getting away from him. He'll figure out where you go in your free time and insert himself there as naturally as possible. He's not particularly hiding what he's doing either - he likes to test you, to see if you notice things missing or moved. If you do, he'll be a little more cautious, use it as reason to drive you into hsi arms. If you don't he jsut views it as all the more reason to take you away - poor thing, you just can't help yourself can you? You're lucky nobody else has got their claws around you, hm?

it is quite funny to me as someone who studies philosophy and has had to have the conversations that bh and ludinus have been having many times over and often with people who like ludinus do not have any reading comprehension and truly like. the notion of âthis shouldnât existâ is almost always one that comes up regardless of whether itâs a discussion on the metaphysics of a potential God(s) or divinity, high political powers, or vehicles of systemic oppression. and what anyone who cares about people more than their ideals (even, sometimes, ideals that started out being about people but quickly come to be about the ideals themselves) realizes very quickly in a philosophical discussion about what should and shouldnât exist is that it does not matter if what youâve decided âshouldnâtâ exist does in fact already exist. like that tends to be the difference between sociopolitical philosophy that actually has teeth and substance in the world â a willingness to engage with the world as it is, not as it should be. because you can have the perfect image of a just and wonderful future world, but if you do not at every step reckon with the unjust world from which you are aiming at that future, youâre doing nothing. ideals are helpful because they aim us toward goals and hopes, but theyâre nothing without a reality that grounds them.
and so people like ludinus, who in the real world would play the role of a graduate student with critical thinking skills that make every professor he comes across question how he arrived at his level of study, they donât have Wrong ideals, thereâs obviously plenty of reasons why an exandria without gods might in fact be a better place for mortals (there are also many Many reasons why it would not). but ludinus has also chosen his ideals to weigh heavier than the mortals he claims to uphold them with. i think ashton is also interesting, because i think a lot of their positions have a fun fluctuation between being ideal focused and person focused, where sometimes theyâre focused on how unfair life is in a very nihilistic position, and at other times they seem quite clear about how much ideals help no one if theyâre not second to the desire to help others. and i think that made their role in the convo with ludinus in 102 especially interesting and irritating (but in a narratively fulfilling way). anyway, truly so fun watching ludinus argue with the amount of fallacies and undeserved confidence of like right wing first year students in an ethics class explaining how actually the ends justify the means and thanos had the right idea actually if it means no more starvation. get a grip old man.
#ludinus da'leth#cr3#critical role#cr spoilers#ashton greymoore#i donât think ludinus is neat at all i think heâs fucking dumb as bricks and not even in an fun way#i do think he prompts interesting dynamics in the party though so heâs extremely valuable in the narrative#but like . ludinus is truly emblematic of exactly what brennan was talkin about when he was referencing#ursula k le guin and talking about how evil is often simple and good is endlessly complex#it is Easy. (which is not to say unwarranted) to look at your own pain and say Burn Down Everything That Caused It And Threatens to Do So#And Burn Everything If It Allows Me To Protect Myself From Being Harmed Ever Again#which is. both ludinus and most of the betrayers#it is much much harder to feel the desire to burn everything and still find something worth fighting for anyway . even if itâs just the#hope that you wonât have to burn everything .

I and my friends are making a ttrpg for fun, and have come to an impasse. We disagree about the inclusion of an attribute, that dictates the PCs bravery. Therefore I wonder what a gamedev plugged into the TTRPG scene, thinks about mechanics that make PCs act brave/cowardly.
Well if you ask me specifically, Iâm going to tell you donât include anything that can take control of a playerâs character away from them, but that does not mean that you can't have any kind of mechanic/stat that governs a PCs fear or stress level.
I personally canât stand that mechanics that dictate that PCs run away, or dictate that they do anything at all like by falling under mind control, not because I think of the character as myself or some shit like that, I just consider myself to be the person most qualified to know what he or she would do in any given situation, so Iâve never been a fans of passing or failing saving throws or whatever determining if my character takes a certain action or not.
This is not to be confused with, like, regular dice rolls. Rolls to determine if my character can do a certain action well enough to succeed are totally fine, in fact I often want more of those.
This is one of the reasons why the Composure and Tiers of Fear systems in Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy work the way they do.
We definitely wanted fear to be something that could affect the PCs and cause them to run away in a realistic fashion, these arenât supposed to be fearless action-heroes, but I didnât want it to be just a dice roll and then the GM tells you that your PC has to run away now. So, instead, Composure acts as a âcapâ to the PCâs Skill modifiers. Base Skills cannot be higher than the PCâs current Composure level, making them worse and worse at succeeding skill checks the more frazzled and fatigued they are.
This never forces a situation where a player is told âyour PC is going to run away no matter what,â but it means that the lower and lower that Composure gets, the more running away or surrender seems like a better and better idea.
That isnât to say that mechanics that force certain character actions have absolutely no place in RPGs, hell Eureka even has one instance of this with wolfman rampages, but thatâs only for one single character type, not a main mechanic which affects all PCs.
Itâs well known that I really love AD&D2e, which has tons of that, though I also think that that may be one of the reasons why such a mechanic is so prevalent in TTRPGs in general. Iâve found that for a lot of TTRPGs, if you pick any random mechanic and ask âwhy is this in the game,â the answer is often some variation of âbecause D&D did it,â with little thought as to whether it needs to be in this RPG that isnât D&D, or as to whether it was even a good idea when D&D did it.
Ultimately, study lots of RPGs, and know that there is more than one option besides just "do it the way D&D does it" and "don't do it at all."

the light eyes don't spend enough time apologizing to bridge four for the bridges. like i respect dalinar and adolin and renarin and jasnah for the changes they make, but they should be on their knees repenting for those mistakes. instead they just point out to kaladin how fucked up he is while continually asking him to take on more responsibility. they treat him like a person when he is functioning and don't really deal with him when he is not, despite the fact that their fucked up system is why functioning is so difficult for so many of bridge four. idk, i know they are trying their best but it has real capitalist boss energy, like they are inconvenienced by the trauma inflicted by sadeas and when anyone asks for acknowledgement or reparations the best they come up with is that they can't go back and that there are more pressing matters at hand.
i want one of them to one time set aside their problems and try to meet any of the bridge crews where they are, to listen for one moment to the suffering that happened. even if they are not directly responsible, they need to start interrogating the system of privilege that let something so horrible happen. might help them in their debates over how to handle the parshendi if they acknowledged that their lifestyle has always been built upon the suffering of others
when someone is competent they are just expected to keep being competent, regardless of what has made them that way, and i think that there is cruelty in that. i want dalinar to take one second to not be the bondsmith, looking toward the future, and instead be a human, and sit with his men, and just listen
