#and that's why things like the 'rocks fall everyone dies' endings FEEL like bullshit

ok no no i need to. i need to start at the beginning.
'night of the living dead' (1968) basically codified the whole slow-moving, ppl-eating zombie phenomenon into a Genre. zombie stuff HAD existed before that, buuuut mostly as a......well, a racist misunderstanding of certain cultures and their religious beliefs. for example in 'the white zombie' (1932) a lady gets ~transformed~ into a zombie by an '''''evil voodoo master''''' đ and after said master dies, she's ~freed from her trance~ and goes back to normal. so it's not at all like the zombies of 'night'. there were a bunch of other old films like that one but im not an ooooold film guy so. i can't really. rec anything sorry âđ
BUT. 'night of the living dead', aside from the slow ppl-eaters, was also a biting social commentary about racism. SPOILER ALERT, but in the film, everyone dies in the end bc nobody wants to listen to ben, who is a black man. and ben himself dies bc a white guy saw him in the window, assumed he was a zombie or didn't CARE, and shot him. (and yes i AM salty about this every time, thanks for asking đ) the film makes it pretty clear that if everyone had been able to stop arguing, swallow their pride, and work together, they would have all survived the night. (well. MOSTLY all. KAREN'S MUM >:V)
THEN!!! IN 1978!!! 'dawn of the dead' appeared!!! its 1970s swag, comic book feel, and biting social commentary (sensing a theme, right???) made it ALSO quite the show stopper!! some feel it's superior to the original!!! (personally i find 'night' more enjoyable to WATCH, but the first time watching 'dawn' was very affecting!!! i was a changed birb!!!) it's strange to see it from a contemporary perspective, bc that kind of scathing callout for extreme consumerism and hypercapitalism was......pretty rare tbh?? the only other comparable film i can think of is 'shock treatment' (1981) and THAT was LEAGUES ahead of its time, basically PROPHESYING reality television and the changes in the way ppl treated celebrity and fame and---THAT'S A DIFFERENT POST, BIRB!!! STAHP.
ok where was i. scathing social commentary and 70s swag, right!!! (OH AND tom savini's amazing effects. fly high king!!! u did incredible work in maniac as well sadhsohdoashh why am i like thissss) SOCIAL COMMENTARY AND SWAG.
........NEITHER of which are present in this 2004 remake of 'dawn of the dead'. since, as i said, it's in 2004. and i mean.....ANY film can make social commentary about the environment it takes place in. but in this film it was extremely.......lacklustre ;A;
it wasn't.......bad???? not EXACTLY. i've SEEN bad films, ok, and this??? doesn't make the list. the sets and costumes are fine (well.....mostly đ) the effects are all right, as well. it's.....it's fine. it's not great, it's not terrible, ving rhames is there!!! he puts in a good performance imo!!! i don't recognise anyone else, but that doesn't mean anything, bc i don't know shit about actors, and also im bad at remembering. anything.
but it's just so.......bland. and dull!!! and not fun at all ;A; it tries to be ~edgy~ a few times, but it falls flat bc they either don't go all the way, or they immediately undermine whatever point they're trying to make in the next scene. example!!! once they figure out that zombie bite = certain death, they argue over whether they should kill the member of their group who's been bitten but hasn't turned yet. ok!! so this is a question of morality!! that's fine, films can certainly address that!!!
steve 1 wants to shoot bite man!! steve 2 says no!!! she tells bite man that steve 1 is going to shoot him!!! bite man is sad bc his daughter is there. but he doesn't want to zombie. so actually he goes into a different room, dies, and then steve 1 shoots his corpse so that he does not zombie.
SO. the moral question had no payoff!! it was immediately resolved, and steve 2 wasn't even in the scene, and doesn't mention it again afterward!! but that doesn't even MATTER actually!! bc the AUDIENCE have known from the start that bite = death bc we already watched it happen to steve 1's husband in the opening of the fecking film. so for the audience, the scene is POINTLESS. we already KNOW how this works bc we SAW IT HAPPEN, so now we're just sitting here shouting abuse at the screen in the hopes that these idiots will save themselves!!! AAA. FRUSTRATING ;A;
and as ive said, the rest of the film's production value is too good for it to be a hokey fun campy time. this isn't a baby indie film where i can forgive pointless scenes or shit effects bc it's just normal ppl making a film for fun or bc it means something to THEM and they are putting their whole heart into it. this is a professional film!! a well funded one!!! which doesn't have a tight budget to excuse its mistakes or poor choices!! THEY HAD $26 MILLION. THAT'S. KIND OF A LOT OF MONEY, NO?????
ourhgghgh. i don't like being a hater!! (that is not true. i love it and im having a great time, unfortunately đ) but there's really!!! NO REASON for the film to be this MEH, considering it's a remake of a GOOD film, and the director should probably have some sort of UNDERSTANDING of a film BEFORE he attempts to remake it!!! right?? is that?? like im not crazy for thinking so, right?????? RIGHT????
the issues of the day had changed from 1978 to 2004, certainly. but they could still make commentary about the issues of the day in 2004. or!! they could have just made a gory splatter-fest for fun!! and NOT called it 'dawn of the dead'!!! since they didn't intend to include BOTH ingredients!! (ie gore and commentary). bc that is. that's what the 'of the dead' series WAS. impressive gore effects and scathing commentary. i didn't necessarily AGREE with every point george romero tried to make in ALL of his films; 'diary of the dead' (2007) was a bit insufferable for me, actually. BUT IT WAS STILL GORE AND COMMENTARY. LIKE THE OTHER ONES.
the thing about the og romero zombies is that they are slow, tireless, and will swarm and overwhelm u. BUT, thru TEAMWORK, u CAN survive!! bc zombies are very dumb!!! u just need to be smarter than zombies!!! unfortunately, some ppl are NOT smarter than zombies, so they end up dead. but others escape in helicopters or on boats and live to fight another day!!
EXCEPT. except in 'dawn' 2004..........the idiots DID learn to work together. they were distrustful at first, but apropos of nothing, they began to work together and care about each other, unlike in 'night'. AND!!! they did not succumb to the mindless consumerism for ages like in 'dawn' 1978!!!!
in other words........they defeated the true enemies of the first and second films. they overcame the societal ills of prejudice and consumerism, and were working together and looking after each other without hoarding all the mall stuff or gorging themselves on sweets and arcade games. there's one scene, ONE MONTAGE, over which they played a swing cover of down with the sickness, where some of the guys are shooting zombies for fun, but like......killing the zombies is ALSO for their own safety?? so???? i feel like making a game of it, while very morbid, is still a rather understandable thing to do, esp if ur trying to stave off the madness from being trapped inside a big scary american shopping mall!!!!!! it really wasn't that bad, compared to that one walking dead thingy where they had dog-fighting rings, but with zombies. that's. that's weirder to me, ok. it just is đ
SO. DESPITE SYMBOLICALLY OVERCOMING the TRUE threats to humanity (prejudice and consumerism, u recall)..........they still lose most of them in the end.
YEAH. THEY STILL. MOST OF THEM still FUCKING DIE, and most of them were in random moments of absolutely goat-fucking STUPIDITY, as opposed to ~heroic sacrifices~ made for the ~greater good~. (which ALSO counts as overcoming prejudice btw, since hat man had been an asshole at first who only cared for his OWN safety, and in the end, sacrificed himself to save the others......even tho there was someone who was ALREADY BITTEN who probably should have done it INSTEAD but who's COUNTING??? NOT ME >:V)
LIKE. WHO KEEPS A CHAINSAW RUNNING INSIDE A MOVING VEHICLE. once he was done sawing zombies thru the....i assume they were zombie-sawing holes in their armoured bus, WHY WOULD STEVE 5 KEEP THE FUCKING CHAINSAW ON????? U KNOW THOSE THINGS USE PETROL RIGHT???? WHY WERE U WASTING THE PETROL WHEN U WEREN'T USING THE CHAINSAW??? WHY WEREN'T U CONSERVING RESOURCES FOR LATER?????? and then when driver asshole!steve jostles the bus round, WHOOPS!!! the chainsaw went RIGHT INTO slutty!steve's shoulder!!! there goes slutty!steve, she is now dead!!! and steve 5 is dead as well. somehow. idk the bus crashed or something??? whatever. i don't care. im annoyed.
despite crashing the buss, asshole!steve crawls out, leaving the other two behind......only to have a zombie do a lara croft drop-stealth attack from above!!! oh noes!! if only asshole!steve had had several seconds to hear the loud zombie loudly growling loudly, so he could raise the gun that was ALREADY IN HIS HAND AND SHOOT IT BEFORE IT KILLED HIM. IF ONLY, GUYS. IF ONLY.
and then when the rest of the group check on them, asshole!steve is already a zombie. cool. that's fine. there is ZERO consistency for how quickly ppl turn into zombies but that's fine, it's not like i care.
ALSO ALSO??? zombie baby. i've seen it done. MORE than once. it's never been good. it's never, ever been good, or edgy, or even terribly tragic. it's just silly. and occasionally disgusting. let that one die pls. unless ur going all in on a pregnancy horror story, just.....don't. just let that trope die đ
at least the dog was ok. that is my only comfort in all this. the dog, chips, was all right ;A; (zombies don't eat dogs. in most films, zombies only eat humans, with the notable exception of 'survival of the dead' (2009) where the zombies......learn to eat horses????? idk i. think i blocked most of that film from my memory. there was probably a reason. it was probably for the best. O_O) (notable as in, notable for mainstream zombie films, that is!!! resident evil is ofc its OWN entity, and i dare not try to explain what occurs in the lawless lands of 1980s italian horror films. i don't. i don't want to talk about it. idk if i COULD talk about it. what would i say. what if i accidentally mentioned the sheep guts scene. i don't. i don't want to remember the sheep guts scenE OH GOD IT'S BACK HALP HAAAAALLLLPPP MAKE IT STAAAAAAHP AAAAAAAAAAAAAA ;A;)
im fine. probably.
what was i saying??
OH RIGHT. 'DAWN' REMAKE. yeah it wasn't very good. i was shouting at it but not in the fun way. it was mostly boring, a bit annoying, but not poorly made or with distractingly bad acting. it was just meh. it could have been better tho!!! which is a shame, it's always very sad to see wasted potential like that smh. and it had the fast athletic zombies, which i do not like. i mean to each their own!!! but personally slow, creeping dread will always be more effective on me than jumpscares and flashing lights. one just startles u. the other???is true horror. my fav analogy is like this: terror is what u feel when there's a big scary bear looming over u while growling and frothing at the mouth. horror is what u felt five minutes before that, when u found ur friends' backpacks and shredded clothes, with bloody bones nearby, and realised what that meant. one is immediate, the other builds slowly. they can both be used very effectively in media!!! buuuuut everyone's different, so it won't affect everyone the same way, u know??
....i was a bit cross when i started writing this but i feel much calmer now. why was i angry??? oh well đ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤Ł
I FUCKING. HATE THIS STUPID FUCKIING FILM
ok ok im sorry it's. it's not quite as bad as all that. i just. GRRRRRRRR.
#birb still says#birb watches#don't quote me on ANY of this#im an amateur not an enthusiast#and i have memory issues#so#do not @ me#i don't want to fight about film opinions i just wanted to be angy at the film and move on đ#feel free to ignore me#take allll this with a grain of salt#dawn of the dead 2004#film#horror film#horror#i call all characters 'steve' btw#they get numbers unless there's something particularly noticeable about their character archetypes#in which case they become 'archetype!steve' as a badge of honour#or dishonour as the case may be#ALSO. re: symbolically defeating the film's 'true enemies'#i realise that real life doesn't ACTUALLY work that way#but this is not real life. this is a FILM.#it's a story and stories are told to make a point#if u UNDERMINE that point#it defeats the purpose of TELLING the story in the first place#and that's why things like the 'rocks fall everyone dies' endings FEEL like bullshit#of course an unexpected avalanche could take out a bus full of ppl irl#but in a story that avalanche needs to have a PURPOSE or else the audience will be angry and annoyed and bored#it has to MEAN SOMETHING or else i'm wasting my time by watching the film#when i could be doing literally ANYTHING ELSE instead#that's the difference i suppose btwn media and real life

Author's Note: Hi that isn't my GIF. But this is my fic and I would really appreciate it if you told me how you thought it was, and if you especially like it, my requests are open friends. :3 I have the spicy sad right now, and needed a little angst with a happy ending. Ok, be fed I guess.
This has 3,000+ words, are you proud of me or what!?
From the prompt: As teenagers, a boy and a girl agree to marry if neither have by their 35th birthday. Follow the boy as he attempts to sabotage every relationship the girl has until then.
"Hey Tommy? I was thinking."
"That's a shit idea, you should stop doing that"
You swiped at the back of his head.
"Shut up you ass, I'm serious."
"Hi serious I'm- OW fucking hurt is what I am it's a joke, learn to take a-AH." You hurdled a handful of playground pebbles at the 17 year old.
"Alright, alright gorgeous, hit me- No! I meant hit me with the question you little shit." It was getting hard to breathe when he got you to giggle so hard.
You're laughter died down. You looked down, unsure if you could look at his face when you said this.
"I don't have a boyfriend." He abruptly stopped laughing, hiding the obvious fact that he almost choked on his own spit. You breathed a laugh again.
"I don't have a boyfriend. And you don't have a girlfriend." Your smile slipped off.
Tell him. Tell him, you're almost there. I don't have anyone, and you don't either except we do we have each we have each other we have-
You looked to Tommy, his boyish presence fitting on the swing set made for much younger kids. You were much younger kids when you met for the first time, on this very swing set. You think about telling him you fell in love with him when he pushed Jackson Paloski down on the asphalt because Jackson said trailer-trash can't play on the nice swing set. You didn't know it was love though, you were in the fourth grade but your heart still beat a little faster and when you asked him if you could sit beside him during lunch he huffed and complained, showing off he was moody and tough and haughty, but he very obviously made Michael Welsh move from his spot beside Tommy so that the pretty new girl could take her place beside him. And you stayed there. For years. Right beside him.
You felt the breath leave your lungs as you thought about telling him you can't stop thinking about him lately.
Can't stop hoping your skin will touch when he asks you to pass him something.
Can't help feeling like punching every girl that makes a scene trying to gain his attention. You're usually so focused on glaring at the girl that you miss the way he shrinks in on himself, the way he actively turns his body to you.
You think about telling him. And how telling him could mean you could do more, be more.
You think about telling him. And you think about him pulling away from you, gently gathering his things as he stumbles over how to let you down easily, unaware that that's not an option any more. Tommy letting you down would mean shattering.
You clench your jaw. His eyes try to tell you something.
"So. So since. We don't have someone." You look toward the Shell gas station across the street. Tommy wets his lips with a quick swipe of his tongue.
Your throat twinges, the twinge you get when you're trying to hold back tears. You shrug to yourself and let out a breathy laugh.
Coward.
"So since we don't have hot dates, we should make a deal." You make your voice upbeat. You know Tommy can call your bullshit but he doesn't, sit's quietly.
"If by the time we're 35, and we don't have a, someone, to, ya' know. We should get married." Your heart clenches. "If we don't have. Like if I don't have a husband, and you don't. Have a girl, or-" Tommy is quiet. White hot panic races up your spine. You look over at him.
Tommy looks-
He looks like he's frozen, like he's still a few sentences behind, and you're about to throw in the towel and swallow a few of these pebbles so you'll choke and die and won't have to hear his laughter tear apart your heart.
Then Tommy blinks and kind of hunkers in on himself, looks anywhere but you, eyes shifting and darting. His smile isn't his when he manages it.
"Oh, you're so on, sweetheart."
It's not quite right. The atmosphere is still tense and you feel like there's a conversation you're meant to be having, like there were supposed to be different words spoken and heard during that time.
But having Tommy, even if it's like this, even if he doesn't want you like you ache for him, is better than not having him at all.
Beside you, while you hurt quietly beside him, watching the sun set, rocking back and forth on the too low swing, Tommy swallows down self-hatred and overwhelming feelings. Instead, he schemes.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's been five years since you've made your little deal with Tommy. Five years, and every single time you've tried to move on from the man, it's ended in catastrophe.
The time you two had just graduated high school and drove to Tommy's house so his older brother could congratulate you two. Brendan had had a buddy over that night, not much older than you, and you would be lying if you said you didn't flush appreciatingly at his sly smile toward you and the way he actively tried to add you in on the conversation.
The night ended rather abruptly when Tommy had spilled hot tea all over the guys front. Tommy was always collected, and it was rare moment when he was clumsy. Never mind the fact that Tommy never drank tea, and actively made fun of you drinking the stuff.
Or the time you two reluctantly went to Brendan's wedding. You loved Tess, and thought they were a great couple, but stomaching an entire ceremony of the two being gross and affectionate, all while you and Tommy couldn't boo and throw miscellaneous items at them? The entire evening was spent with Tommy snuggly against your side snarking quietly in your ear, so close you could feel his warm breath on the entire side of your face.
Yes, your plan of moving on was going swimmingly.
Then Tommy went to the bathroom, and a handsome man smiled at you across the room. You tentatively smiled back, and he moved as if to cross the distance. Then immediately stopped, his face dropping and his eyes widening slightly as he spotted something a little over your shoulder. You saw him clear his throat and veer toward a large group laughing.
Your felt your face slightly warm and your heart drop a little, self consciously looking over your shoulder.
And let out a noise of surprise.
Tommy stood behind you, so close for a second you thought a very well dressed wall had somehow appeared while you weren't looking. You had just enough time to see 'The Expression'.
Tommy was an amazing fighter. And all throughout high school, he made sure while he minded his own, he could also hold his own, and everyone knew it. He had developed an expression, one that scared every single boy in this town shitless. It was a mix between unbridled rage and open invitation. The message was pretty clear and universal.
Come get some.
You usually laughed and teased him about it, because to you it just looked like he stubbed his toe and he was trying not to yell.
You weren't expecting to see it at his brother's wedding, and you certainly weren't laughing now.
In a blink it was gone from his face, and he turned to you with his beautiful sweet smile, the smile that showed just a little peak of his slightly messed up front teeth. He usually reserved that smile for you. You had never seen anyone else on the receiving end.
"Tommy, why were you just-"
"This blows, I just passed Tess and Brendan flirting. They're already married, why would they keep doing that." He rolled his eyes, moving to your side as his hand disappeared behind your back.
"Tommy did you just square up to the guy checking me ou-"
"Brendan's friend is here, the one who can can do a Kick Up."
You stared at each other for a long moment. You felt his hand barely ghosting over the small of your back. His eyes where sharp, a little desperate.
"Tommy."
"There's also a rumor he killed a guy with just a playing card."
You licked your lips. He raised his eyebrows, his lips getting distracting.
"Shit Conlon, why didn't you start with that, take me to him."
Or the time, more recently, when you went to a match to watch Tommy completely destroy his opponent. You loved going out to see him fight. Loved the adrenaline and the satisfaction when Tommy won, making him less timid, a little more rowdy and confident, a little more touchy and feely.
You've kind of given up on the whole moving on thing, even if it was driving you up a wall.
Tommy had just won, and you were eagerly waiting to congratulate him, excited to hug him freely, without him wondering why you were hugging him to begin with. And maybe to hold on a little tighter. Maybe to allow your hands to rove a little more freely.
Hey, was it not a night for celebration?
A man started to chat you up. You smiled patiently and gave some noncommittal grunts and affirmations as you continued to scan the crowd, looking for the familiar mass of Tommy, all hard edges and bulk. You were bouncing on the balls of your feet.
The guy moved closer, making a joke you didn't really hear. You laughed, your eyes darting and searching.
"You look beautiful by the way. I saw you watching the fight, crazy that you're into this stuff. Not a lot of women I know cheer like that."
You finally glance over to the man, but quickly get back to standing on your tip toes, looking above heads.
He doesn't even look that bad, and it's obvious he wants to get your number. He's just not the man you want chat with, and definitely not tonight. Not on a night that Tommy just won, and a night he'll want to come over to yours, joking and teasing, touching you much more confidently than he normally would. Falling asleep much more easier with his head on your lap.
You tamp down a smile. You wouldn't want this guy to get the wrong idea.
"You know, there's a really good Thai place down the road- Ah, fuck, watch it buddy. Can you not look where you're go-" You hear the man choke off the sentence, trying not to smile as you imagine the other guy. probably a lot bigger than he is. Wouldn't want to completely ruin his night by laughing at the guy.
"Fuuck me, buddy, sorry. I did not know who I was talking to." You could hear the man swallow. "Hey, I think you did great in the ring tonight, real good job of... Knocking that guy out. With one punch."
You whirled around, smiling so wide you felt the strain on your cheeks. There was only one guy who did that tonight.
Sure enough, Tommy was standing there. He had put on a shirt and took his gloves off, but he was still sweaty and breathing hard. He completely stanced up, like he is in the ring, and his expression was-
Well, you chalked it up to the testosterone flowing freely through the place. Probably just mad that he ran into another dude.
It still didn't stop you from running and jumping directly on him, arms coming up to wrap around his neck, legs completely circling his torso. You giggled into his neck, exclaiming how proud you were of him, how good he looked out there, completely stroking his ego, but not caring at the moment.
You felt his arms immediately span your back, feeling like his hands where trying to be everywhere at once. That was new. That was new and you couldn't say you hated it.
What you didn't see was the look on Tommy's face. The cold calm of someone who just threw a punch so hard at a man who was bigger and faster than him and shut his shit down. Directed at another man, much slower and smaller in comparison.
You didn't see the stranger's face pale, but you distantly heard the sound of chairs clatter to the ground as he turned tail.
Five years of pining (not so) quietly for Tommy, the man you had fallen in love with, but without a doubt did not love you back.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tommy knew without a doubt that he loved you.
All those years back in fourth grade, when he let it slip that his favorite snack was those crackers with the cheese filling, and you showed up with a whole pack of them to share, smiling this big goofy grin with your beautiful eyes and warm presence.
God how could he not.
The problem was how he was supposed to convince you to like him back. Him, Tommy, who fought most of his way through high school, who didn't like to get too close to people, who didn't like eye contact or conversation that ran too long or too forced. Who loved you though.
And who was very annoyed at the boy flirting with his girl.
It never failed to make Tommy's blood boil. He knew he had no right, because for one, he spent five years doing his damned best to break up every chance at you leaving him.
Just until you guys turn 35, right Tommy boy? You can probably keep that up.
Tommy breathed in a shuttering breath.
He just wanted to buy you your favorite drink at your favorite cafĂŠ. That's all he wanted to do. And maybe find and excuse to hold your hand without burning up from the embarrassment of actually having feelings (can you imagine?).
But of course, some dick-head always noticed how beautiful or kind or warm you were, and had to take their shot.
Well, Tommy was fucking sick of it.
Tommy thought of all the times, and there were a lot of times, when he had to step in and derail the situation. He knew this would be the last time. He had to do this, get rid of the unrelenting ache he felt while going to sleep, looking at you, thinking about you.
Tommy moved toward the you and the man you were talking to like he was entering the ring. With the mindset that he could get totally and irreversibly hurt, but he was gonna fight to the bloody end beforehand.
"Do you need directions?" Tommy asked as he slid up behind you, closer than he would have ever before. He felt your confusion even if he couldn't see your face.
"What?" The man was just as quizzical.
"Oh, I was just asking if you needed directions or if you could get lost on your own." Tommy raised his eyebrows, setting his hand on your hip, trying not to think about the many, many questions you'd have about that.
The man thought about arguing, but then he really looked at Tommy. Looked at you, then back to Tommy. Decided he didn't want to bleed tonight, and huffed out an angry sound.
You at least waited until he was out of ear shot before whirling on him.
"What. What was that?"
"Ok, I know what your probably thinking-"
"That you're out of your mind Tommy?! Are you kidding me right now? 'Get lost?' Get outta here with that shit, what was that?"
The two of you were pretty far back in the shop, but he still lowered his voice to make sure no one was bothered.
"Ok, yes, you're mad, I can see that-"
"Oooooh well I'm glad you can see that Tommy." You felt your face start to turn red, feeling exhausted and confused. "Explain. Explain to me Tommy, that every time a guy wants to have a nice, civil, God forbid, flirtatious conversation with me, he high tails it out of there just as fast, Tommy, explain."
Tommy felt an expanding ache somewhere behind his left eye.
"Ok. Ok I'm gonna say something stupid-"
"You always say something stupid, stupid-"
"Can you just. Can you let me finish." Tommy felt exasperated and a little insane. He was about to confess in a coffee shop to the girl he loved and things would never be the same again because she was about to leave, but fuck it if he wasn't at a boiling point.
"Ok. You know how we made a deal?" You looked at him, raising your eyebrows.
"About who could spray the most whipped cream in their mouth? Yeah it's me, it'll always be me. So you got so mad you're trying to, what, make sure I die alone, I don't..."
"What? No can you not, can you focus right now?" Tommy's palms were starting to sweat and he clenched his eyes shut tight. He breathed in and let it back out in one harsh huff. "When we were seventeen-"
"Seventeen?"
"When we were seventeen you said that if we weren't married by the time we were 35, that we should marry each other." He watched as your eyes widened and your face warmed a little. "Well, the deals off. I'm not doing it any more."
Tommy wasn't sure what to expect, but the flash of utter pain that tore across your face was not it. You stepped back, looked like you were about to bolt, your eyes wild. You tried to pull yourself together but it was really hard to breathe. No matter how many times you tried to prepare yourself for this day, you could have never imagined how it actually almost brought you know to your knees.
"So. Here's the new deal. If in like, five minutes, you're still single, and I'm still single..." Tommy swallowed hard, licking his lips. "We should just." His eyes darted to your lips.
You froze. Tommy caught his lush lower lip in between his teeth. He'd never been more nervous his entire life. So nervous for the inevitable laugh, the pity laced rejection, because really, it was one thing to be friends with a shy awkward boxer, but another to look at him and think, 'yeah, that'll do.'
Tommy had approximately five seconds to wallow in self deprecation and pure terror before he had a handful of you, and something that suspiciously felt like lips on his lips. But that's funny, because he's almost positive that that's not the case.
Then he felt your tongue swipe his lip and decided he cared fuck all and proceeded to get lost in you, your breaths, God he could feel, taste, your breath as you both got consumed by each other.
Someone coughed disapprovingly your way. The two of you broke apart, panting slightly.
"Ok, ok please don't. I really don't want you to hit me but I'm really fucking dense, right, and I just have to ask, you did that because you. You like like me- OW I said I didn't want you to hit me!"
You felt yourself laughing, felt your never ending ache subside and your love sky rocket.
"Oh, you're an idiot," You pecked his lips, he tried to catch your mouth fully but failed. "You are such and idiot- Oh my God we're both idiots holy- Hey. Hey, you, you've been. Have you been sabotaging-"
"Did you hear that?" Tommy tilted his head and looked toward the ceiling. "Ope- oh yeah. No. yeah, that's for sure the sound of-" He cut off, dropping his serious expression, grinning as he leaned down and kissed your mouth again, this time taking your words and any objections, affectively cutting off any questions that would leave him looking stupid.
You two would need to sit down, to talk about how you've felt all these years, how you were both so stupid that you both refused to confess to each other.
But for now, you lost yourself in the taste of Tommy, and the heady feeling of someone you've loved for seemingly forever, loving you back.
Real Quick: Would you be mad if in the next fics I write I called this man Tomithy? Asking for a friend.

Our Little Secret: Part Six - A.R.
Word count: 5976 Summary: After Lenoraâs funeral, Arvin learns some news about her. Y/n and Arvin have sex for the first time and ends up being way past her curfew...
-
WARNINGS: SMUT, FINGERING, DIRTY TALK (mild), READER'S FIRST TIME
-
I attended Lenora's funeral as her best friend.
No one knew about Arvin and I and we were keeping it for a different reason now. Not in case Lenora found out but to keep everyone else sane in this crazy time.
I had taken a week off school, helping the Russell's around the house with cooking, cleaning and some company. Emma was absolutely distraught, only coming out of bed when she needed the bathroom or needed to eat - even then it wasn't promised.
Ma was so busy with helping Daddy while I was busy helping the Russell's, we hardly got to see each other. But we both knew after the funeral things would calm down.
Arvin was handling his sister's death strangely. He wasn't sad. He didn't cry. He would go out on car rides, asking to be alone a lot of the time. I didn't know what he was doing and to be honest, I didn't want to know.
At night, once Earskell had went to bed and well after Emma had went to bed, we'd stay up, sitting outside on the patio in the old rocking chairs with some tea and listen to the radio quietly humming in the background. We wouldn't really speak much. We'd just be in each other's presence. We'd kiss. Then I'd go home.
But today was her funeral. I had a standard funeral outfit on: a black dress with tights and patent shoes with a black ribbon in my hair. I had been crying all day so my tears stained my cheeks and my eyes were red and puffy.
Emma was much the same as me while Arvin was trying to be strong for us, only a few tears leaving his eyes during the ceremony. He held me close to him, his hand just above the curve of my waist to not draw attention to us. We stood by together as Emma cried over her casket.
"Oh Lord, there's just some things we can't understand..."
She cried, kneeling to the floor and caressing the wood with her soft hands.
"But you take her into your arms..." She had to stop speaking because of her sobs.
I watched, tears falling from my face and I looked up at Arvin, rubbing my hand over his back softly. He stared numbly at the casket, only the ever-so-often squeeze of my waist indicating he was okay.
"Now I ain't somebody for sayin' prayers or..." Earskell talked, coughing and then clenching his jaw.
Arvin looked over to his Uncle and then removed his arm from around me, leaving me feeling cold without him. He slightly bent over and helped Emma to her feet, holding her by her arm and then wrapping his other arm back around me, this time on my waist.
"Let's go home." I said in almost a whisper.
Emma and everyone else nodded. I pulled away from Arvin and when he looked at me I looked back as if to say it was okay. He nodded slightly and helped his Grandma to the truck. I followed loosely behind the three of them, giving them some space to be with each other in the fresh air.
As I walked behind them through the grave yard I thought about everything.
What did she have to tell me? What happened with the preacher? Why was she so ashamed? Why did she want to end her own life?...
There were too many questions and none of them I could answer. I was supposed to be her best friend and I felt like I had let her down. I had let her down.
***
"I think it'll be real good if you went out for a night, Emma." I sighed, sitting next to her on her bed.
It had been a few days since the funeral and she was still lying in bed, only getting up for the bare minimum. Even for food she wasn't getting up for, which I was cooking each night.
"I don't have the energy, y/n." She croaked.
"I think you need a bath. And a nice new dress. And your hair did and your friends around you. There's a church day out at the beach on Saturday. I think you should go." I said with a smile.
She laughed lightly, "Honey, I hardly have five dollars to put together, how am I supposed to buy a new dress and get my hair done?"
A grin grew on my face, "Luckily I am here to help with that."
***
Saturday rolled around and I showed up early morning with two new dresses for Emma. She had gotten her hair done the day before and she was feeling a lot better. She showered and I met her in her room when she came out. I lay the two dresses on the bed and she looked in confusion.
"Pick your favourite and I'll see you in the living room." I smiled simply then left her room, closing the door behind me.
I waited in the living room with Arvin who was reading the newspaper, a cigarette bouncing between his lips and an ash tray.
"Ma asked for me to be home at 9 tonight." I said with a sigh.
Arvin looked up from the paper, "Really? That early?"
"Yeah. She does not like you." I groaned.
"Damn...I'm guessin' there's not much I can do about that, huh?"
"Not really...don't you have work today?" I asked.
"Only a small shift. Just gettin' back into it after the accident and then obviously..." He gulped.
"I know...well that'll be good." I smiled.
"Yeah."
"I'm ready!" Emma called from her bedroom.
"Come on out!" I beamed, getting up from the couch.
She clicked down the hallway in her red kitten heels. I gasped with delight. She chose the poppy patterned dress that flowed lightly below her knees. It fit her perfectly. A silver cross hung over her clavicle and her hair was pinned up nicely.
"Emma Russell, you look absolutely divine!" I grinned.
She blushed, "Really? I do love this dress, I can't thank you enough y/n."
"It's no problem at all. I'm just glad you're feelin' better and havin' fun. You deserve it."
She took a deep breath and smiled, "Thanks, darlin'."
Arvin got up to drive her to the church and he complimented her with an embrace.
"I'll be back around 11pm. It's late but the girls are all hitchin' rides with the men after their poker."
"Well I'll be gone by 9 so I'll see you tomorrow? I hope you have fun, Emma." I hummed, hugging her tightly.
"Thank you so much. Have fun!" She waved as Arvin opened the door for her.
We both watched as she and Earskell talked, going to the truck. Arvin closed the door slightly, leaning forward to me.
I giggled and cupped his face, bringing his lips to mine. It was soft but meaningful. His hands lightly touched my waist before we both pulled away.
"Have a good day at work and drive safe, alright?" I said.
"Thanks, y/n. I'll see you later. Bye." He flashed me a smile before leaving the house.
And I was left for nearly a whole day by myself.
***
Arvin's POV
The working truck pulled up to the car park outside. I jumped off the end along with everyone else and we said our goodbyes. As I headed to the truck I saw an officer standing by, looking at me.
"Need to have a word with you, Arvin." He announced.
"About what?" I asked, standing a few yards from him.
"It's uh...it's about Lenora." He spoke awkwardly.
I took a deep breath and looked away for a second, "What about her?"
"I came by here instead of home so nothin's put on your grandmother-"
"Put on her? What do you mean?" I asked.
The officer removed his uniform hat which is never a good sign. He seemed awkward. He seemed nervous.
"Y'know old Dudley in the coroners? He's a drunk but...he ain't no liar."
I looked at him with a stern look, masking the fact that my stomach was flipping inside.
"Did you know Lenora was carryin' a baby?" He asked.
I tilted my head slightly, my eyes on his. This seemed real. But it couldn't be.
I continued staring at him, hoping he'd crack.
"That's bullshit. That son of a bitch is lyin'." I clenched my jaw.
"Dudley ain't a liar. He came to me privately so as your family knew...I felt he was right." The officer nodded.
I averted eye contact, feeling myself tear up. No, no, no, no, no.
"I might've put my foot in somethin' but that wasn't my intention."
He fiddled with his dark green fedora, uncomfortable with the conversation and uncomfortable with the fact he had to tell me.
"You know that preacher ain't said no words for her? Not for people that kill themselves." I shook my head and clenched my jaw.
That son of a bitch.
***
I drove home in anger and confusion. When I pulled up, I saw y/n outside on one of the rocking chairs, a mug in her hand and a blanket wrapped around her.
My mood lifted almost automatically. She looked gorgeous in the dim sunlight. I remembered the house was empty and I was happy in that y/n and I could spend time together alone but then again, Lenora wasn't there.
I walked tiredly up the steps and she sat her mug down with a pout of her plump lips.
"Hey, you okay?" She asked me, standing up.
I didn't say anything.
"Arvin?" She prompted.
I looked up at her.
"How was work?" She asked, trying to pry something from me.
"It was fine." I shrugged, walking back to lean against the post.
She bit her lip, "Is somethin' botherin' you?"
She knew me too well.
"A uh...a police officer stopped me before goin' home." I said, retrieving a cigarette from my pocket and lighting it.
"What? Why?" She asked, arms folding as she leaned against the opposite post.
I chuckled. It wasn't to be annoying. It was in anger and confusion and disbelief.
"He told me that Lenora - my innocent, God-loving, 17-year-old sister - was pregnant before she died." I stated.
She blinked at me like a deer in headlights. She didn't speak for a few seconds, her brain working to log the information properly.
"She uh...she was p-pregnant? No." She shook her head.
"Well she was." I took a puff.
"What the hell? How did I not know?" She pressed a hand to her chest.
"Don't get mad at me I'm just repeatin' what he said!"
"I'm not mad! I'm just...she was pregnant?"
I licked my lips and nodded.
She chewed her lip in thought, wrinkles forming between her eyebrows.
"I don't believe it. That's bullshit."
"That's what I said. But, apparently some guy down at the coroner's said that she was. And apparently, he don't lie." I said.
She shook her head, "Who...who was the father? Cause he'll be out there right now runnin' free!" She exclaimed.
"I don't know. I have an idea but I don't know." I licked my back teeth.
I couldn't tell her about the preacher. She clearly didn't know and I wasn't about to tell her. Because if I told her I would have to explain how I knew and stalking some guy doesn't seem like the best thing to say.
"Well that is just...wow." She rubbed her face.
"I know."
We both went silent, our heads filled with thought and worry and confusion. How could neither of us had known?
"Are you gonna tell your Grandma?" She asked.
"No. No, I'm not." I dropped the cigarette butt and stood on it.
"I think it would set her back." She agreed.
"Exactly. She don't need that right now, she's at a good place."
y/n nodded, agreeing with me. I sighed and took my hat off, running a hand through my hair. y/n walked towards me with her arms outstretched. I smiled and welcomed her. Her arms wrapped around me tightly, her chest pressed against mine. I leaned my head on top of hers and stroked her back softly.
"We didn't get to tell Lenora." She whispered.
I gulped, "I know..."
"Well if heaven is real then she'll be lookin' down at us thinkin': I told you so."
We both chuckled at the thought. But it was slightly uncomfortable to think of her that way. Dead. In heaven. I didn't like it.
"Hey," She chirped from underneath me.
I moved my head and looked at her. She reached her hands up and wrapped them around my neck.
"You were such a good big brother." She stated.
An immediate lump in my throat formed at her words. Not if you knew the things I had done or what I was planning to do...
"And you're an amazin' person, Arv. You really are." She smiled.
I just smiled weakly at her.
"And I know you feel like you have to be strong all the time but with me...with me you don't have to." She whispered, trailing her hands down then up my chest.
Reader's POV
He stared down at me with a sudden look of lust and hunger. Before I knew it, I was being pushed back against the post, gasping as the wood hit my back. Arvin kissed me ferociously, his tongue pushing into my mouth without missing a beat. I moaned in surprised but sunk into him, getting the fast-paced rhythm he was implementing.
He moved his kisses to my neck and he began to kiss and suck on my sweet spot.
"Arvin," I moaned breathlessly, tugging his hair slightly.
His hands slid down my dress and grabbed my ass through the fabric as his mouth worked on my skin.
"Feels so good." I hummed.
His lips came back up to mine and our tongues worked with each other's, pushing and swirling in some sort of dance. It was passionate and hot and I felt like I needed more of him.
Suddenly his hands roamed further to my thighs and swiftly lifted me up. I gasped as my legs locked around his torso effortlessly. He smirked up at my surprise and kissed me again. He blindly opened the door and it slammed shut behind us. He walked through while kissing me intensely.
And then I knew I was in his room. I had only been in once or twice for laundry but I knew it was his. He pushed me against the door, ultimately closing it. I moaned again and he moved his lips to my neck again.
"Want you, Arvin." I hummed.
He looked up at me with a glint of lust and hope in his eyes.
"You sure?" He asked.
"I need you." I whispered.
That was enough for him.
He brought me off the wall and to his bed, lying me carefully on his sheets, getting on top of me.
He kept kissing me, his hands beginning to lift my dress up. I sat up and allowed him to slide it off my body. Thankfully I was wearing nicer underwear this time. He threw my dress to the side and looked down at my body in awe.
He stood up from the bed, eyes burning through my skin as he started to undo his buttons on his shirt.
I felt a colour rise to my cheeks. He was seeing me in my underwear. No guy had ever seen me in my underwear before.
"You are fuckin' unreal, darlin'." He complimented, his eyes shining with adoration.
I bit my lip, "You're makin' me nervous standin' like that."
He removed his shirt and then pulled off his dirty white t-shirt from underneath. I had seen his chest before but his bruises were nearly healed and he looked even better than before. Probably since he'd been working all day. He undid his belt and then slid down his trousers, stepping out of them.
My jaw dropped. Arvin. In. His. Underwear.
"Whatcha starin' at?" He smirked.
I gulped then looked back up at him, "Nothin' much."
He shook his head and leaped on top of me. I squealed before he kissed me.
"You're a minx, that's what you are." He chuckled against my lips.
"Well then teach me how to be good." I whispered.
He pulled away, looking down at me with his dilated brown eyes, almost completely black with passion.
"Fuck, I want to."
He began to slide his hand down my body, making rest stops at my waist and my hip before teasing the waistband of my pants. I gasped and looked up at him in lust.
"Have you ever been touched before?" He asked lowly.
He slid his hand carefully into my panties. I arched my back and moaned lightly at his touch.
"N-no." I answered honestly.
His eyebrows furrowed for a split-second.
"You've never been touched before? When you look this pretty?" He quirked an eyebrow.
His fingers slowly circled on my clit, warming me up. I grasped his arm and bit my lip at the new feeling.
"Have you ever touched yourself before?"
My throat went dry.
"No." I answered again.
He smiled, "That's okay...but you've gotta tell me if you don't like what I'm doin', alright?" He asked.
I nodded with a hum.
He pulled my panties off and I felt completely exposed. Only my brasserie covered the last part of my modesty. But I felt safe with Arvin. I trusted him.
His hand returned back to my core where he continued rubbing circles on my clit. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the new-found pleasure.
"Already so wet, darlin'."
I whimpered at his filthy words and felt his finger slide down my core. He slowly pushed a finger into my entrance. I gasped and gripped his arm that rested beside my head, propping himself up.
He started moving it in and out, beginning to pick up a pace.
"How does that feel?" He asked.
"So- good." I hummed, eyes closed in pleasure.
He began to speed his finger up, curling it up to find my spot. I moaned, bucking my hips into his palm as if to say more.
He got the message and slipped a second finger in with ease. I moaned loudly as his fingers worked inside of me. His thumb grazed constantly over my clit and whatever he was doing was making my stomach flutter.
I could hear the sounds of my arousal and it added to the pleasure.
"So good for me, y/n. So good." He praised.
"Arvin!" I whined.
"What, angel?" He asked softly.
"I need you. Please." I practically humped his hand in desperation.
He smirked, "You sure you're ready?" He asked cautiously.
I nodded, "Please."
He removed his hand from me, leaving me a whimpering, pathetic mess. He slid his underwear off and my jaw dropped once again. His member was a lot bigger than I had anticipated. But to be honest, I had never seen one so I had nothing to compare it to. But my god.
He pumped himself in his hand as he got back onto the bed, kneeling between my legs. I sat up and removed my bra myself. I then took my hair out of the band and the ribbon, sitting them aside. I lay back down, attempting to make my hair look as nice as it could splayed out on the bedsheet.
"You're so fuckin' gorgeous. Can't wait to feel you." He groaned, getting on top of me.
I bit my lip and held his arm with one hand and gripped his hair with the other.
"You ready?" He asked.
I took a deep breath and nodded. He leaned down and encased my lips in a passionate but loving kiss, our lips moving slowly over each other's and our tongues swirling around perfectly. I got so distracted by the kiss that Arvin could easily slip half-way into me. I gasped at the feeling of him.
"Is that okay?" He checked, brushing some of my hair out of my face.
I nodded and hummed. He gave me a moment to adjust to his size. It was slightly uncomfortable but that soon went away when he pulled back then thrusted slowly into me again.
"Arvin," I moaned.
He lifted my thigh up to his side and pushed further into me. I tugged his hair and bit my lip.
"So fuckin' tight, fuck. Feel so good, darlin'." He panted.
"Please go faster." I whimpered.
He dipped his head into the crook of my neck and held my thigh firmly as he began thrusting into me. His pace sped up quickly and soon enough he was moving effortlessly into me.
"Feels so good!" I moaned, arching my back into his chest.
His lips came to my breasts, taking one nipple into his mouth. I gasped at the new feeling as his tongue lapped over my skin. His thrusts sped up and he completely bottomed me out, his skin slapping against mine with every push.
"Oh god!" I tugged on his hair.
He groaned, "So gorgeous, so hot - fuck."
I rolled my eyes back at his words.
In a Christian based Southern state, having premarital sex was looked down upon. But it didn't feel wrong. It felt so good.
"So tight around me," He commented lowly.
"Can we flip?" I asked breathlessly.
"'Course."
He smoothly flipped us, so he was on his back. I bit my lip and hovered over him, taking his member in my hand.
"Fuck." We both cursed in unison.
I pumped him in my hand a few times to see what it was like and how he reacted. He gripped my thigh tighter and bit his lip. I smirked, feeling a pang of power course through me.
I swiped his member on my folds, surprised at how wet I actually was. I slowly sank down on him and we both let out long groans as I bottomed him out.
"W-woah." I panted.
He sat up, shifting inside of me. I moaned a little at the movement. His arms wrapped around me and I held his shoulders. I kissed him deeply, running my hands up into his hair and his tongue explored my mouth like it never had before.
I started to move on him, up and down was my instinct. Apparently I was right.
"Fuck, darlin'." He cursed against my lips.
"Oh god." I moaned, gripping his broad shoulders for support.
He gathered my cascading hair and put it behind my back as I moved on top of him. For some reason it made emotions flow in my brain.
Love.
They way he cared for me and was gentle with me obviously set off an emotion I had never really felt before. Not romantically, anyway.
I looked into his dark eyes and stopped bouncing on him. He looked into my eyes and held my waist. Â He started to move my hips in a grinding motion. My mouth dropped open slightly at the feeling.
His eyes stayed on mine as I rolled my hips on his, his hands guiding me. It was intimate and passionate and I loved him. I held him as close to me as possible, our chests matching and my hands massaging his scalp.
"Arvin," I moaned.
I could feel a build up of tension in my stomach.
One of his hands slowly came down between us and started to rub my clit again. I threw my head back in pleasure, the feeling intensifying.
"Shit!"
"You close, darlin'?" He asked lowly.
"Close? To- to what?" I asked, fastening my movements.
"Fuck- to your high, baby."
His fingers kept working on my clit and his other hand still guided my hip.
"My high? Oh fuck! That feels so good!" I moaned loudly and highly.
His fingers worked faster.
"If you feel like you need to let go...then do it, baby." He groaned.
I didn't really know what he meant but the feeling in my core and stomach tightened.
"Oh god! Yes! Yes!" I moved my hips faster on him.
"God you feel so good, baby. So good around me." He praised.
I dug my nails into his back, my head going to his forehead.
"Arvin, I love you." I admitted breathlessly.
"You-you love me?" He repeated as if he was surprised.
"Yes! Yes, I love you." I bit my lip.
"y/n...pretty girl," He brushed some of my hair behind my ear.
"I love you, too." He grinned.
I stopped my movements for a second to smile and kiss him. I wrapped my arms around his neck, bringing him as close to me as possible.
He started to thrust up into me, the sound of skin slapping and my surprised moans filling the room.
"Oh! Yes! God, yes!" I squealed.
He worked a lot faster than I did. His member brushed a spot inside of me I didn't even know existed. I could feel myself clenching around him and he groaned at the feeling.
"Let go for me, baby. Come on." He grunted.
"I love you! Arvin, I- yes!"
I felt the knot in my stomach snap and the feeling in my core burn. I moaned and cursed and gripped Arvin's hair in ecstasy. He continued thrusting up into me, my wetness dripping down onto him and his thighs.
"Feels so good baby, good job." He praised.
He kept me in my high like I had entered nirvana. My mind went cloudy, my vision hazy, my hearing muffled. All I could sense was Arvin. And that's all I needed.
"Fuck, baby-"
He quickly flipped me back onto my back and pulled out of me. I was still somehow in my high but I opened my eyes to see what he was doing. He pumped his member a few times before grunting and finished on my upper thigh and lower stomach.
I watched in awe. His muscles tensed and untensed, his head was thrown back and the sounds leaving his mouth were heaven.
After he calmed down he crashed next to me and we both caught our breaths.
"Sorry about that, I should have asked you." He sighed.
"It's okay. I liked it." I giggled.
He shook his head and looked at me, "You are perfect, y/n."
I shook my head back, brushing my hand over his loose curls, "No, you are."
He smiled at my touch, "How was it?"
I laughed lightly, "Good. I didn't even know it was possible to feel like that."
He smirked, "I'm a master, what can I say?"
I rolled my eyes and smacked his chest. He laughed and then shuffled closer to me, lips decorating my shoulder.
"Did you mean what you said?" He asked quietly.
I nodded, "Every word."
His lips connected to mine in a soft, long kiss.
"I love you." I whispered.
"I love you, too."
-
He dropped the needle onto the record and waited for the music to play.
(Play now)
'Cry To Me' by Solomon Burke began to play through the speaker.
Arvin had poured us a glass of very fancy scotch each. He said it was only for special occasions. I had only put my panties and one of his button down shirts on. The warm, humid weather was enough to keep me warm. Arvin wore a white vest shirt and some long pyjama bottoms.
"I love this song." I hummed, sipping the warm alcohol from the crystal glass.
"Dance with me." Arvin stated rather than questioned.
I smiled and sat my glass down. He gave me his hand and twirled me under his arm before bringing me into his chest.
We held hands on one side while his other hand held my waist and my other held his shoulder. We swayed back and forth to the music, enjoying the post-sex bliss.
"Come on, and cry to me." I sang an octave higher.
Arvin smiled, "I love you."
I giggled, "I love you, too."
We stayed like that, dancing and singing to the parts we knew, hands all over each other, stealing a few kisses whenever we could. He'd spin me out and I'd attempt to spin him but he could never get the hang of it.
We were happy. And we were in love.
"I've never seen you like this before, you know? I like happy on you." I smiled up at him.
A one sided smile curved on his face, "No one's been able to bring it out of me before."
I bit the inside of my lip at his words. Part of me was happy and proud that I could make him feel like that but the other part felt horrible that he's felt that way for so long.
"Well get ready to be happy a whole bunch, 'cause I ain't goin' nowhere."
He laughed, twirling me under his arm and back into his chest.
"That's exactly what I want." He smirked, leaning down to kiss me.
Our lips pressed together.
But only briefly.
A truck pulled up outside. And both of us turned to look out the window.
"Wait WHAT?!" I shouted, noticing that it was Emma and Earskell in the car.
I looked at the clock on the wall.
11:57.
"SHIT!" I exclaimed.
It was nearly midnight. I was supposed to be home at nine.
I scrambled to Arvin's bedroom and hurriedly put on my dress and shoes. Arvin put the shirt I was wearing on and changed into his work trousers again. He grabbed his jacket and his keys, shoving his feet into his shoes as we ran to the front door.
"Oh! You two are still here?" Emma jumped at the sight of us rushing past her outside.
"Back soon!" Arvin shouted.
I jumped into the passenger seat and Arvin got in the drivers. He pulled out frantically and drove off.
"Oh my god. I'm dead. I'm dead." I panicked.
"Just calm down, you'll be fine." Arvin tried to soothe me, speeding through the village.
"You'll be dead, too! Oh god what are they gonna do, Arvin?" I gripped my hair.
"We're nearly there, it'll be fine." He grasped my thigh lightly.
I took deep breaths, looking out at the silent town as we zoomed past everything. The dread in my stomach grew as we drove up the road and then entered the grounds, past the gate.
"Go before they get you, alright?" I ordered, jumping out the car.
"Y/N Y/M/N YL/N! Where the HELL have you been?!" Ma shouted from the door, storming outside.
"Ma, I can explain! Let's just go inside!" I exclaimed.
"Boy, get out that car right now!" She shouted at Arvin.
"Ma! Stop! It's not his fault!" I shouted, beginning to get defensive.
Arvin got out of the car and held his hands in his trouser pockets, walking towards Ma and I. I saw Daddy standing by the door, watching everything and my heart ached.
"You are supposed to be takin' care of her! How dare you keep her away this long with no contact! How dare you!" She shouted at Arvin, pointing a finger at hi accusingly.
"Ma! He didn't do anything!" I shouted.
"I am not STUPID y/n! I know that you two have been gettin' together almost every night. I see the car bein' parked behind the gate, I see the way you two look at each other. And I do not have a problem with that! But if the so called MAN known for his sexual acts keeps my 18 year old daughter out until MIDNIGHT, I am not gonna be happy!"
"We lost track of time, ma'am." Arvin stated calmly.
"Oh did ya' now? Doin' what?"
"Ma!" I shouted.
"No! I wanna know what was so important that stopped you from comin' home on time!"
Arvin and I stuttered, not knowing what or how to say anything.
Ma scoffed and clenched her jaw. We could practically see steam coming from her ears.
"You. Inside. Now." She demanded, pointing at me.
I furrowed my brows, "No! I'm not goin' inside with you!"
"y/n, inside right now!"
"No! I'm not leavin' Arvin!" I held his arm in mine.
Her chest heaved with rage, "Arvin, stay the hell away from my daughter."
Ma went to grab my arm but I dodged it.
"No!" I screamed.
"y/n!"
"No! I wanna be with Arvin!"
"He is no good for you!" She shouted as if he wasn't there.
"You do not get to tell me what I can and can't do! I'm an adult and if I am in love with someone-"
"IN LOVE?" Ma shouted.
"Yes! In love! We love each other and you can't stop that!" I held his arm so tightly I was surprised I hadn't cut his circulation off yet.
"You are not to be with each other anymore. You are a bad influence on my daughter and I never want to see you near her again. Do you understand?" She spoke sternly to Arvin.
I looked up at him. He gulped, his eyes becoming teary, "I understand." He uttered.
"Arvin!" I scoffed.
"I'll leave you alone." He murmured, beginning to walk away.
"Arvin! What the hell are you doing?!" I shouted, my arm still attached to him as he - we - walked away.
He opened the car door and clenched his jaw, not looking at me.
"Go with your parents. I've done enough."
"Arvin, don't say that! You- you just said you loved me!" I felt tears begin to fall from my eyes.
His chin quivered, "Just go, y/n. Please."
"What? No. No! I'm not going!"
He ripped his arm away from me and went to get in the car.
"No!"
I slammed the door so he couldn't get in.
"No! You don't get to do that, Arvin! You don't get to say you love me then fuck off when somethin' comes between us!" I shouted, realising these were more sobs than anything.
"Just go inside, y/n." He said to the ground.
I furrowed my brows and shook my head in disbelief.
"y/n-" I interrupted my mother.
"No! Arvin, please! Why are you doing this?"
"We can't be together." Arvin sniffed.
"Yes we can! We can!" I went to cup his face but he moved away.
I didn't know if it was sadness or utter rage but I broke down in tears.
"You said you loved me!" I screamed, pushing him against the car.
He took it. He didn't look at me, though. But he took my babyish tantrum.
"You said you loved me!" I cried, hitting his chest.
"y/n, go inside. Please." He begged quietly.
I saw tears fall from his face.
I stopped and stood back, watching with blurred eyes as he got into the car and drove off quickly.
I choked on a sob and kneeled to the ground in a cry, letting all the emotions I had pent up go. Absolutely everything.
Ma came up to me to comfort me but I pushed her off and stood back up.
"No! You don't get to comfort me after ruining love for me." I cried, pushing past her and running to the house.
I ran up the steps and I paused briefly when I saw Daddy watching with tired and heartbroken eyes. He silently moved to the side to let me storm away. I sobbed uncontrollable sobs as I ran up the stairs and slammed my door shut, sliding down to the floor.
I thought he loved me.

You ever think about that whole argument (from the narrator/Ishida) that humans are just like ghouls because they eat animals to survive? So, so flawed. A LOT of people are vegetarian or vegan these days. It would have been better to make the argument that any animal's survival is dependent on the death of others, whether those 'others' are slaughtered or not. Circle of life and all that.
THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS
This is one of the ways in which tokyo ghoul gets close to a nuanced philosophy, but instead falls short into a tired old cliche. Itâs just inches away from getting the point, but is held back by a major issue with Ishidaâs writing style: Full focus on individual responsibility
We see it with how he portrays Kaneki alone with very little focus on countless other people who contributed as the catalyst for Change. We see it with how he portrays a handful of CCG members and Ghouls as âthe bad ones who are making it worse for everyone elseâ rather than predictable products of their worldâs system. And we see it with how he frames the world in a philosophical sense. Thereâs far too much focus on single people and simple goals. What will Kaneki do to save the world? What will Touka do to protect kaneki? What will Hinami do to decide if sheâs a good person or not? It fails to take into account the sheer immensity of outside forces. It shouldnât be âwill X character choose to do Y?â it should be âhow does Z effect X characterâs ability or reason to do Y?â
Think about how Hinami had to kill Kureo because otherwise she and Touka would die horrifically. Was that even a choice? Could anyone blame her for fighting for her life when it was the only way to live? Or how Nishiki ate a piece of Kimi. Was he ever in a position to turn her offer of herself down? Was there any other way for him to survive then? Or how countless ghouls hunt down innocent people to eat. How else are they supposed to get food for themselves and their families? What other way can they survive starvation when every other Avenue is purposely blocked?
But Iâm every single case, the situation these characters are in are set aside in favor of framing it as decisions they made with no other factors than their own desires
Now letâs compare that to how humans interact with meat. Weâve evolved for it, we sweat, see, and even support complex brains because we eat meat. Whether we like it or not we are predators, and that has been the case since the first hominids took down prey with sticks and rocks. Weâve been doing this for ages and itâs ingrained in our biology, cultures, and day to day life. Of course throughout history people have chosen not to. Whether it be for religious reasons, not liking it, or just being uncomfortable with the thought of eating animals some people have always been vegetarian, but in recent years thereâs been way more. Sometimes itâs about diets, but other times people claim that to eat meat is unethical. âHow could you eat a poor animal? How can you support factory farms? Thatâs disgusting Iâm gonna email you a link to a poorly researched paper focused solely on Eurocentric ideas of consumption and terrible comparisons to actual human suffering that will guilt you into veganismâ
The thing is, eating meat isnât inherently evil. Not to sound like a cannibal or anything but I donât think thereâs anything morally wrong with eating both humans and animals given that itâs done respectfully. The problem comes when we focus on what farming is like now, that animals are mistreated, that farm workers are mistreated, that it can harm the environment, but does that make people who eat meat evil? Are they supporting this when they get dinner?
No, of course not, and to understand why we need to look at the reasons. First and foremost, itâs just good for a lot of people. Many people canât survive on vegan/vegetarian diets, many people struggle with food and animal products are what they can eat, and often animal products are the easiest and most affordable food out there. Even in urban areas itâs hard to find food without animal products that are affordable in the long term for everyone, and thatâs in the best case scenario. Look at places like Alaska, food most take for granted costs so much that no one can reasonably live only off that, and people there have lived off of animals theyâve caught for millennia before diet crazes existed. And yes, there are so many ways in which the methods of farming are unethical and harmful and those should absolutely be called out, but the responsibility lies with those profiting from it. How much evil is someone tight on cash trying to make it last until their next paycheck doing by taking their family to McDonaldâs rather than getting food so much less filling for the same amount of money or more?
Thereâs so much complication added by factoring in society and capitalism and colonizationâs effect on the local environment and what kind of life our meat animals live, but in the end, predation is natural. Animals eat animals, and humans who have benefited so much from our rise on the food change as early hominids are the only ones who take issue with it. Some people believe it really is evil and unnatural to eat animals, and they are free to believe that for themselves, but it speaks volumes about their own privilege when they turn that judgement on the people just trying to eat enough to survive. It isnât a massive personal stake, itâs trying to survive in a world that has so many roadblocks to something as simple as a full meal
So compare that to ghouls. They steal bodies and hunt and kill because they have to. The rich may be able to outsource the carnage and keep the blood off their hands so they seem ethical, but they contribute to the deaths of humans the same way people touting that the animal farming industry is killing the world will buy animal product substitutes that harm people and the ecosystem just as much. After all, is the agave syrup that some company tore up a shitload of land in a more exploitable country to farm any less harmful because you can pretend that no people or animals were hurt? They can feel bloodless, but that doesnât make what they do more ethical. It just lets them feel like it
As for the poor ghouls? They have to hunt. They get to play the part of ravenous monster because they donât have the time or money to have someone else get bodies for them. Even anteiku ghouls have a little privilege by finding bodies that are already dead. Not every ghoul has a car to pick up corpses, or bodies that can walk that distance, or the knowledge to find good spots. Most hunt since the people that have died naturally are locked away because humans think of themselves as too evolved to take part in the circle of life, and would rather ghouls keep killing than let their loved ones be eaten like most animals are
In the end youâre completely right. Any animalâs survival is dependent on the deaths of others. All we as people can control is how kindly that is done. Humans with the means to can choose not to eat meat, but humans who donât and ghouls canât, and that does not make them evil. If humans in the TG world were willing to give the dead to the ghouls, itâs entirely possible that they wouldnât need to hunt anymore. Meat will always be necessary, but the way they get it can be better, and that change relies solely on the system preventing them from having ethically sourced food. The fault does not lie with the individuals who need to eat
Ishida fell just short of the point in favor of the boring and nihilistic âoOoOh HuMaNs ArE tHe REAL mOnStErSâ thing because itâs edgy and easy, but not correct. Thereâs nothing evil about having a biological need to eat meat, thereâs nothing evil even for humans who donât need to to eat meat, itâs just the circle of life. Nature is gruesome sometimes, but claiming that people are inherently evil is just edgelord bullshit. We can make the ways we get meat better if the people profiting off of it are held accountable, and ghouls can too if the people profiting off of their slaughter are held accountable.
Humans and ghouls are alike. Neither are bad for feeding themselves, and both can benefit a whole lot by not fighting over who is worse and instead demanding that the people in charge of their world make it better

Out Of Time ~ 112
MASTERLIST
< previous chapter
Word Count: 2,900ish
Summary: Captain America: Civil War --- tread carefully.
Steve landed the quinjet as Bucky and Y/N grabbed weapons.Â
âYou shouldnât come in with us,â Bucky muttered, shaking his head. âItâs too dangerous.â
âToo bad,â Y/N responded, slipping guns into the holster of her suit, that was thankfully in the quinjet. âIâm coming.â
Bucky sighed before looking up at Y/N. âIâm not the same man you knew.â
âIâm not the same woman. ButâŚâ Y/N stepped forward, took Buckyâs metal hand, and held it to her chest. âYouâre still my Bucky.â
Bucky studied her eyes for a second before swiftly putting his free hand on the back of her head and pulling her in to meet his lips. She was shocked, not kissing back for a few, before remembering how much she loved the feeling of his lips on hers. He was the one to end the kiss, stepping away and breaking all physical contact with her.
âIâm sorry. I shouldnât have done that,â Bucky apologized. âIâm not in the correct mindset.â
He quickly made his way over to the back of the quinjet, waiting for the ramp to lower. Y/N joined him before Steve left the pilotâs chair and stood in the middle of them as the ramp lowered.
âYou remember that time we had to ride back from Rockaway Beach in the back of that freezer truck?â Steve asked.
âWas that the time we used our train money to buy hot dogs?â Bucky questioned.
âYes,â Y/N answered, with a reminiscent smile.
âYou blew three bucks trying to win that stuffed bear for a redhead,â Steve continued.
âWhat was her name again?â Bucky asked.
âDolores,â Y/N responded. âYou called her Dot.â
âSheâs gotta be a hundred years old right now.â
âSo are we, pal,â Steve said, clamping his hand on Buckyâs shoulders.Â
The three of them looked at each other before Steve slipped his helmet on and they exited the quinjet. It was cold, the wind blowing harshly as snow covered the ground. Bucky led them to the entrance, set in rock. The door was open.
âHe canât have been here more than a few hours,â Steve said as they stared at the door.
âLong enough to wake them up,â Bucky said. Both men looked over to Y/N.Â
âLast chance. I really wishââ
âSave it Steve. You know Iâm not leaving,â Y/N retorted.
Both men sighed. âThen no powers unless itâs absolutely necessary. I donât need you throwing up in the middle of a fight.â
Y/N gave a small nod before Steve led them in, her in the middle and Bucky tailing. They entered a small elevator. She watched as the men nodded at each other while the elevator went down. Once it rattled to a stop, the men heaved up the doors. Steve held up his shield as the other two held up their guns, walking along a corridor, keeping close to a wall.Â
The trio headed up a flight of stairs, Bucky leading, Y/N in the middle, and Steve at the end, when they heard a noise from behind them. They swiftly spun around, aiming down the corridor. Still keeping his gun up, Bucky gently pushed Y/N down so that she was more hidden.
âYou ready?â Steve asked.
âYeah,â Bucky responded.Â
The three held their positions as the creaking of the doors at the end of the corridor continued. The double doors part, forced open by Iron Man. Both Steve and Y/N stared in surprise. Tony walked towards them, retracting the suits helmet.
âYou seem a little defensive,â Tony commented.Â
Steve got up and walked towards Tony, keeping his shield up. Tony eyed Y/N who was slowly following.
âItâs been a long day,â Steve replied.
âAt ease, Soldier,â Tony said. âIâm not currently after you.â
âThen why are you here?â
âCould be your storyâs not so crazy. Maybe. My girl friend also wasnât at the place that I left her. Figured she was with you.â
âTonyââ
âRoss has no idea Iâm here,â Tony cut Y/N off to continue. He lended his shoulder against a large cement post. âIâd like to keep it that way. Otherwise, I gotta arrest myself.â
âWell, that sounds like a lot of paperwork,â Steve said, lowing his shield. Itâs good to see you, Tony.â
âYou too, Cap. Hey, Manchurian Candidate, you're killing me. There's a truce here. You can drop.â
Steve signals Bucky to lower his weapon, in which he does. Y/N walked up to Tony, hesitantly.
âIâm sorry,â she whispered. âNat called and warned me. I had to come help.â
Tony stared at her, studying her carefully for a moment. He had a feeling for a few days now that something was up, something besides the Accords. He just couldnât figure out what.
âIâm sorry too,â he said quietly, pulling her into his arms. He held a kiss to her head. Bucky tensed at the gesture, which Tony noticed. âAlright, letâs go.â
Tony put his helmet back over his face and the four of them cautiously walked further into the bunker. The three men were positioned so that Y/N was in the middle of them. Iron Man was leading the way towards an enormous chamber with capsules standing in it.
âI got heat signatures,â Tony stated.
âHow many?â Steve asked.
Tony paused before answering, âUh, one.â
As the entered the chamber, the lights turned on. A hazy, yellow mist descended within the capsules around the room. Each capsule contained a soldier. They all looked around, bewildered.
âIf itâs any comfort,â Helmut Zemoâs voice came over a speaker, âthey died in their sleep.â
They all walked around, staring at the soldiers that had each been shot in the head.
âDo you really think I wanted more of you?â Zemo continued.
âWhat the hell?â Bucky muttered.
âI'm grateful to them, though. They brought you here.âÂ
Zemo appeared in the control room, through a small window. Tony lifted up his hand as Steve threw his shield, but it bounced back.
âPlease, Captain,â Zemo taunted. âThe The Soviets built this chamber to withstand the launch blast of UR-100 rockets.â
âIâm betting I could beat that,â Tony retorted. The four of them rounded the center consul so that they could be closer to Zemo.
âOh, I'm sure you could, Mr. Stark. Given time. But then you'd never know why you came.â
âYou killed innocent people in Vienna just to bring us here?â Steve questioned. Staring Zemo straight on.
âI thought about nothing else for over a year. I studied you. I followed you. But now that you're standing here, I just realized . . . there's a bit of green in the blue of your eyes. How nice to find a flaw.â
âYou're Sokovian,â Y/N stated, coming closer. âIs that what this is about?â
âSokovia was a failed state long before you blew it to hell. No. I'm here because I made a promise.â
âYou lost someone?â Steve wondered.
Zemo, looking grave, clicked his tongue. "I lost everyone. And so will you.â A screen suddenly turned on, bringing everyoneâs attentions to it. âAn empire toppled by its enemies can rise again. But one which crumples from within? That's dead . . . forever.â
They all moved over and looked at the screen. The frozen frame of a secluded road and the date, December 16, 1991. Tonyâs face helmet disappeared, his eyes briefly met Y/nâs before flickering back to the screen that began to play.
âI know that road,â Tony stated, anxiously. âWhat is this?â
All eyes were now on the screen. A car came into the frame, crashing into a tree. Y/N watched as someone road up on a motor cycle and got off. The Winter Soldier. Steve watched Tonyâs increasing unease. The driver got out of the car, crawling on the ground.
âHoward,â Y/N gasped quietly, eyes brimming with tears.
âHelp me wife,â Howard begged on the video. âPlease. Help.â The Winter Soldier walked over and hoisted him up by his hair. âSergeant Barnes?â
âHoward!â Maria called.Â
Tony looked up and glared at Bucky, before his eyes found their way back to the screen. Y/N was unable to take her eyes off the screen, her heart began racing. On the screen, the Winter Soldier lifted his metal fist.
âWait!â Howard begged, hand digging into his suit coat. âYou donât want to do this, Barnes. Look.â Howard pulled out the photo of him and Y/N dancing. âWe knew each other⌠You know her⌠Remember.â
Y/N heart clenched as a sob torn through her. Her hand came up to her mouth, trying to keep it quiet.
âPlease donât,â Howard continued. âRemember Y/N at least.â
After a brief glance at the photo, the Winter Soldier punched Howard over and over.
âHoward!â Maria called again.
Howard slumped over, dead. The Winter Soldier put him in the driverâs seat, face against the steering wheel. He walked around the the passenger side, where Maria was located. The Soldier reached in and gripped her throat, expressionless as he strangled Maria. The Winter Soldier then walked up and aimed a gun at the surveillance camera, ending the feed.
Y/Nâs heart was beating rapidly. It was the only thing she could hear. Her breathing was becoming increasingly unsteady. Losing her balance, she backed up into the wall and slid down it. Steve kept his eyes on Tony, who lunged towards Bucky.
âTony, Tony,â Steve said, stopping him.
Tony looked at Steve, clearly consumed with grief and tears glistening in his eyes. âDid you know?â Tony asked, trying to control his emotions.Â
âI didnât know it was him.â
âDon't bullshit me, Rogers! Did you know?â
âYes.âÂ
Tony stepped back, chin jutting up in a twitch. Looking over at Y/N, he sees her struggling with this as well, making him realize that she didnât know either. Tony reengaged his helmet. He punched Steve to the floor and deflected gunfire from Bucky, disarming him. Grabbing Bucky, he flew across the chamber, slamming Bucky onto the floor. Tony pinned Buckyâs arms down but was unable to fire because Steve threw his shield at him.
Steve barged Tony backwards. Tony then shouldered Steve to the floor, shackling his ankles. Bucky came back up and punched Tony, who just listed him and slammed him against a machine. Tony raised a fist, but Bucky twisted it. A rocket shot out from the Iron Man suit, a fireball exploding. Steve sliced his shackles as a towering structure of pipework collapsed.
Barely registering what was happening around her, Y/N was quickly thrown back into her senses, as pieces of metal began to fall around her, boxing her into the corner.Â
âAh!â She screamed.
Bucky and Tony were thrown to the ground by the metal, not hearing her screams. Steve though, did.
âNo,â he whispered. Steve and Bucky stood up, making eye contact. âFind Y/N and get out of here!â
Bucky nodded. He quickly found her, throwing the metal to the side.
âIâve got you, Y/N/N,â Bucky said quietly. âIâm so sorry.â
Y/N shaking in his hold as Bucky rushed towards the wall with the lowest platform. He hit a control panel, opening the over head roof. Tony shot at them, thankfully missing, before Steve landed in front of him.Â
âIt wasnât him, Tony,â Steve stated. âHYDRA had control of his mind!â
âMove!â Tony ordered, hovering. He began to fly over Steve.
âIt wasnât him!â
Steve grabbed onto Tonyâs ankle in mid air, smashing the bottom of the boot. They fought while Bucky was trying his best to make his way up the platforms with an almost unresponsive Y/N in his arms. He began to notice that the trembling was increasing and that she was sweating everywhere.
Tony unsteadily soared upwards as Bucky jumped across to another platform, Y/n still in his arms. Tony kicked Bucky down, causing him to let go of Y/n, who rolled away. Tony then took aim but Steve quickly jumped in front of Bucky, using his shield to rebound the energy back to Tony. He dropped, landing on a lowering platform.
âHeâs not going to stop,â Steve stated, helping Bucky up. âGo.â
âSteve, itâs too dangerous for me to take Y/N,â Bucky worried. âLook.â
Steve looked over to see Y/N shaking, with sweat dripping down her forehead.
âIâve got her,â Steve stated. âGo.â
Bucky ran and Steve leaped over and shot a wire around Tonyâs neck, dragging him down. Tony deflected Steveâs shield, before trying to target Bucky.
âCome on, come on,â Tony muttered.
âTargeting systemâs knackered, boss,â FRIDAY warned.
âIâm eyeballing it.â
Tonyâs helmet retracted and he shut one eye, taking aim at the opening hatch. He fired, hitting the giant hinge and cutting off Buckyâs escape route. Tony then flew up, blocking two swings from an iron pipe Bucky was trying to use. Tony grabbed Bucky around the neck from behind.
âDo you even remember them?â Tony asked.
âI remember all of them,â Bucky replied.
Bucky pushed them both of the walkway. Steve jumped into them to deflect their fall. Bucky landed on a platform while Tony and Steve landed on the concrete floor besides an opening in the wall where snow drifts in. Finally hearing more of the commotion, Y/N pushed herself up, looking over the side.
âNo,â she panted.Â
The three men she loved most in the world where fighting each other and she had no strength to stop them. She winced as she felt a cramp in her lower abdomen.Â
âNo, no, no,â she whispered frantically.Â
Pushing herself up, she shakily jumped down from platform to platform as the men still fought.
âThis isnât gonna change what happened,â Steve said to Tony.
âI donât care,â Tony replied. âHe killed my mom.â
The two began going at each other, with Bucky shown joining in. Y/N got down to their level as Bucky was blasted away from Tony, his metal arm blowing off. Tony zapped him again, throwing him to the side. Y/N rushed as quick as she could over to him.
âB-bucky,â she called, collapsing beside him. âBucky, pleaseâŚâ
Bucky coughed up some blood. âGo,â he groaned. âYou have to get out of here.â
âBut youâre all killing each other.â
âAnd you shouldnât have to see that⌠go⌠pleaseâŚ. I love you.â
âBucky, Iââ
âGo.â
With an unsteady inhale and a nod, Y/N opened a portal to the quinjet. She knew she couldnât get much further than that. Closing it, she fell onto the ground. She had no more energy to move but her body still forced her to vomit. Y/N couldnât focus on anything around her, black spots filling her vision. With one more heave, she blacked out.
~~~
Tony and Steve were both panting as Steve ripped the shield out of Tonyâs suit and helped Bucky up. They began to walk away, leaving Tony on the ground.
âThat shield doesnât belong to you,â Tony said. âMy father made that shield!â
Pausing, Steve raised his chin before dropping the shield. He walked around, with Buckyâs arm around his shoulder, leaving Tony to stare at the shield. Panting, he watched it until something suddenly hit him.
âY/N,â he gasped. âNo.â He pushed himself up. âY/N!âÂ
He called her name as she walked around, searching for her. Tony feared ash something terrible had happened to her or that she had gone with Steve and Bucky. He eventually, after almost an hour, gave up the search and headed out of the bunker. Tony was thankful to still see a quinjet here. As he entered the jet, he saw a body laying in the middle of it.
âY/N⌠Baby?âÂ
Tony slowly limped over to her. As he drew closer, he noticed the blood seeping from somewhere in between her legs. He rushed to kneel next to her.Â
âHoney,â he tried to be gentle but firm as he turned her over from the vomit she was in and patted her cheek. âY/N, please.âÂ
But nothing. He quickly moved to find where the blood was coming from. There was no gash, no wound. As he ran through all the possible things, Tonyâs mind came to one solution.Â
âNo,â he whispered. âNo, no, no.âÂ
He hurried and got the quinjet into the air and set for the compound before getting out of his battle torn suit. Tony then took Y/N into his arms, rocking her as he begged for her to wake.Â
âI canât lose more than I already have⌠Iâm so sorryâŚâÂ
Dr. Cho was already there waiting for the quinjet when they landed back at the compound. Her and her people rushed Y/N away from Tony. He watched helplessly, falling onto his knees as tears trailed down his cheeks. And he did the one thing heâd never done before in his life. Tony Stark prayed.Â
âPlease God⌠donât take them from me⌠Iâll be better, work harder⌠Iâll do anything. Iâll give anything. Including my own life⌠Just donât take them from me. Iâm begging you⌠I-I-I didnât even know⌠I didnât even knowâŚâ
was it worth it? (peter parker x reader)
request (summary) @annamckayla : Hello, ur amazing! I wanted to request an Imagine where the reader and Peter are married with a bby, and after every mission she could be like "was it worth it" (in a kind playful way) and each time he would say yes, but one day the reader is somehow muddled up in this dangerous mission along side a few other ppl, he saves everyone but her, and he doesnt know if it was worth it
word count: 3.1k
warnings: lil bit of fluff, LOTS of angst so buckle up
edited: this is one of my longest fics so far, i put a lot of effort into this one kdsjnsdkfn
a/n: hehe ily anna but this request not cool dawg (jk ily but writing this hurt like a buttcheek on a stick)
masterlist | teaser
-
You look out the window, holding the beautiful baby boy you and Peter made in your arms and rock him back and forth. Your eyes scan over the city buildings, knowing your husbandâs somewhere out there stopping crimes and saving lives.
âDid you know Ben, that your daddy is out there kicking butt? Saving lives, almost every day?â you look down at your sleepy baby.
He glances up at you with half-lidded eyes and coos, reaching out to you. You smile warmly and let him grab your finger.
âYup, thatâs right, daddyâs Spider-Man. I almost fainted when he first told me during our Senior year of high school,â you shake your head and chuckle at the memory.
You continue to sway him in your arms until he falls asleep. You hum quiet lullabies and walk over to the bedroom, placing him in his crib that was next to you and Peterâs bed.
Your head snaps up once you hear the bedroom window sliding up slowly. You chuckle quietly and place your hands on your hips, already knowing who it is.
Peter crawls in and onto the ceiling, closing the window with his foot. âPeter Benjamin Parker, you better not jump down. Benâs asleep,â you warn in a hushed tone.
He looks over at you and takes off his mask, flashing you a sheepish smile. God, you could never get tired of watching him take off his mask like that.
He crawls down the side of the wall and quietly lands, walking over to you. He holds your waist and you wrap your arms around his neck, pressing your forehead against his, âYou seem really beat, Mr. Parker,â you mutter softly.
âI sure am, Mrs. Parker,â he pecks your lips, glancing down into your eyes.
You sigh longingly, curling your fingers in his hair, âWas it worth it?â you tease quietly.
He sighs softly, âAre you going to ask that every single time I go out on a patrol?â he murmurs against your lips.
âMhm, because youâre not just coming home to your lovely wife. Youâre coming home to your lovely wife and baby boy,â you whisper.
âIn my eyes sweetheart, itâs worth it to save another oneâs life, stop crime and come home to my whole world, you two,â he cups your face, pressing kisses all over.
âBut what if you donât come home one day?â you whisper, feeling your eyes begin to gloss at the thought.
Peter tilts your head up towards him and kisses you deeply, bringing you closer, âYou know I donât know the answer to that. You shouldnât constantly worry about the future baby, you should try-â
You sigh against his lips and pull away, âI know, Pete. I know,â you mumble.
âI love you, and Ben, so much. Donât ever forget that okay?â he holds your cheek gently, caressing it.
You place your hand on top of his nodding, âWe love you more.â
Some nights he came back without a scratch but most nights he came back with much more than just a scratch.
Benâs next to the couch sprawled out on a soft blanket, playing with some of his toys.
Youâre fixing up some dinner until all of a sudden you hear a thud from your bedroom. You frown and quickly look up, turning off the stove in an instant.
You glance over at Ben making sure heâs fine. He looks up at you with curious eyes, his mouth all over a teething toy. You smile softly then quickly walk over to your bedroom, âPete?â you peek your head in.
You gasp at the sight of Peter flat on the floor by the window, holding the side of his torso in pain. You rush over and slide next to him, lifting his head up gently to rest him on your lap.
âWhat happened?â you whisper, placing a hand on his cheek.
He smiles timidly and looks up at you, âI-Iâm fine I swear baby, just a little whoopsie,â he breathes out.
Your eyebrows furrow in concern, and slowly lift up his hand. You frown at the deep cut above his hip, âCan you get up? I need to patch you up Peter,â you whisper.
He nods and carefully begins to sit up. You help him stand up and walk him over to the bathroom. You watch him lift himself up on the counter, letting out a sharp grunt.
You sigh, grabbing some cloth from the bottom drawer and handing it to him. âApply pressure okay? Iâm going to check on Ben,â you walk off.
You see Ben begin to doze off and walk up to him, scooping him up in your arms. You hold him gently and head back to the bedroom, placing him in his crib.
You walk back to Peter and get out the medical kit you have nearby at all times. Peter watches you with tired eyes, holding the cloth you gave him to his wound.
You look up at him and press a kiss against his forehead, âI think you need stitches bub,â you hold his cheek. He nods against your touch.
âOkay Mrs. Parker,â his raspy voice making your heart clench.
After stitching him up, you help him clean himself up. You stand in between his legs and wrap your arms loosely around his neck. You give him a concerned look that makes him pout.
âI know what youâre about to say.â
âWas it worth it?â
âBaby,â he groans quietly and pulls your waist close, âYes, yes it was.â
You hum quietly, threading your hands through his hair, âWhy?â
He nuzzles his nose against yours, letting out a quiet sigh, âYou know why.â
You exhale and press your lips against his for a moment. He kisses back and holds you closer. You pull away and cup his cheek in your hand, âI guess so,â you whisper.
You never stopped asking him that question every time you came home. Deep down, you dread the day you wonât be able to ask him due to him never returning.
Though you knew it was repetitive and annoying to ask, you couldnât help but ask. There was this one night where Peter wasnât having it and the two of you broke out in a fight that thankfully ended in an agreement.
Peter tiredly crawled through the bedroom window, freezing as his enhanced hearing picked out the soft snores that came out of Benâs mouth.
He smiled softly and closed the window, jumping down quietly. He walks over and adjusts Benâs small blanket. Peter shuffles over to the kitchen to grab some food.
âHello to you too,â you piped up from the couch, leaning on the palm of your hand.
âSorry babe, hi,â he came up to you, bending down to kiss your forehead.
âYou okay? Rough night?â you sat up, looking up at him worriedly.
âDonât worry, Iâm fine,â he waves his hand and goes over to the fridge, grabbing some food.
You sighed and followed, leaning against the counter. He heated up his food in the microwave and glanced over at you, âWhat?â he yawned.
âWas it worth it?â you teased, poking at his side.
Your smile faltered as you noticed he didnât react. He let out a weak chuckle, âMhm.â
âPeter, Iâve known you for what? Six years now? You can talk to me bub,â you murmured.
âDo you always have to fucking ask that question? Every single fucking time I come back from risking my life for others, âwas it worth itâ bullshit? Do you!?â he snapped his voice loud yet low enough to be heard by you but not by Ben. He dragged his hands down his face and looked over at you with the most exhausted expression, waiting for a response.
Your heart raced and you felt your throat begin to swell, never expecting Peter to burst out like that, âI-I never meant for it to upset you P-Pete,â you whispered, âI j-just-â
âYou just what huh? Y/n, love, I donât think you understand what I do out there,â he grits through his teeth, turning off the microwave that went off. âOf course itâs fucking worth it, Iâm an Avenger. A hero. Itâs what we do! Thatâs all we fucking do,â he fumed, pacing back and forth.
You inhaled sharply, quickly wiping away your tears that fell from your cheeks before Peter saw but you failed to do so. He stopped in his tracks, his heavy breathing calming down, âS-shit baby, I-Iâm so sorry-â he took a step towards you.
You took a step back, âN-no, itâs okay. I get it, it was inconsiderate of me to ask, constantly. I-I just thought it was kind of like an inside joke y-you know? But thereâs no excuse for it,â you whimpered, âA-actually a part of me, h-has been wanting to bring up y-your career Peter.â
He nodded, walking over and cupped your face, wiping away your tears, âTalk to me sunshine, I-Iâm not mad. Iâm not mad at you at all, dammit itâs just been a long day and I shouldnât have taken it out on you just now. I-Iâm calm, just talk to me. Iâm here, I got you,â he pressed a kiss against your forehead, his words starting to take an affect on you.
You let out a shaky breath and nodded, âPeter, a-are you ever going to consider r-retiring? I-I know youâre young and I know itâs s-selfish of me to say, but you could do so many other great things. L-less risky careers, because we,â you choke slightly on your words, Peter instantly placing a hand on your back to soothe you. âB-because we have a family now Peter, and if you,â you sobbed, âIf you died, god I donât know whatâd I do.â
Peterâs heart shattered at your words and he pulled you into a tight hug, bringing your head to his chest. âI know, I know,â he whispered painfully. âY-you have to trust me, and what I do. I-I love you both, with all my heart. With all my entirety. But I-I just canât give up what I do.â
You sighed deeply and nuzzled your head into his chest, âI get it Pete,â you sniffled, beginning to calm down. âI really do. But remember what you told me that night when I found out your identity?â
âWanna check out the other web shooter?â he muttered, playing with your hair.
You stifle a quiet laugh, âBesides that. You told me you kept your secret for the longest time because you didnât want to put my life in danger. Nor Mayâs, nor Nedâs. Or anyone close to you,â you sighed. âD-does that not concern you now?â
Peter tensed at your question, âW-well when you put it like that. I feel like shit now,â he grumbled making you chuckle. âLook, Iâll talk to Tony okay? Iâd never want to put you in danger, let alone our own son. I-Iâve just been so wrapped up in being this superhero that everyone looks up to that I- I didnât realize I have everything I could ever need in front of me. You and Ben,â he squeezed you tightly in his arms. You smiled in content, tearing up and held him close.
Even after that argument you had with Peter, you still managed to ask him the question. Luckily without pissing him off. He eventually came up with different creative and adorable responses each time which you absolutely adored.
âPeter, Iâm going to run to the store real quick mâkay? Watch Ben,â you walk over to where heâs sitting, wrapping your arms around him.
He looks up at you and you peck his lips causing him to grin, âOkay mama.â
You smile happily, ruffling Ben whoâs sitting in his dadâs lap and grab your keys, walking off. Ben pouts slightly and reaches out for you as you leave the apartment.
âDonât worry buddy, mommy will be back,â Peter ruffles his head gently making him giggle. âNow look,â he props him up to face the TV, âThat cool guy right there, that is Luke Skywalker.â
Soon after about two Star Wars movies later, Peter began to get worried. He places Ben who fell asleep back in his crib.
He walks over to his phone and leaves you another message. He paces around for a couple minutes and quickly glances at his phone repeatedly.
His heart jumps out of his heart when he hears your ringtone and immediately picks up, âY/n? Are you okay? Itâs been almost two-â
âPeter Parker,â a low raspy voice answers, âI hope you didnât forget about me Spider-Man,â he chuckles darkly.
Peterâs eyes widen, panic beginning to rush throughout his body, âWhere is she?â he spits.
âShe isnât the only one in danger Parker,â he holds your phone up, a bunch of other voices crying out for help.
âP-Peter!â he hears Aunt May wail out.
âYou fucking monster,â Peter snarls, clenching his fist.
âWilmington Fifth Street, the warehouse on the right. Canât miss it. If you call backup, all your loved ones will be dead,â the anonymous enemy retorts and ends the call.
Peter quickly calls Tony, âKid what? Itâs like 9-â
âMr. Stark please s-send someone over to my apartment to watch Ben. I-I have to take care of something please,â Peter explains, putting on his suit.
âOn it,â Tony recognizes the panic in his voice, âDo you want me to send backup?â he asks but doesnât receive a reply as Peter hangs up.
Peter paces around, running his hands through his hair. Within a couple of minutes he hears someone walk up to the front of the door and swings it open before they could knock, âOh thank god, Happy. Please, watch Ben. I have to go,â he rushes back to the living room.
âO-oh okay, yeah of course. Peter whatâs-â Happy asks closing the door behind him.
Peter jumps out the window and swings off to the address that clouded his mind. âGod please, please,â he whimpers to himself and eventually lands in front of their warehouse.
He couldnât just burst through the front door, thatâd bring too much attention. Peter looks around and quickly swings up to the roof, finding an entrance from a lifted up window.
He scans the room quickly to see Aunt May, Ned and MJ all tied together. âKaren, is there anyone else is the building?â he mutters lowly.
âYes. But if you act now, you can save those three,â she states.
âOn it,â he grunts and swings down quietly. They all look up at Peter with fearful and tear-filled eyes, shaking their heads.
He quickly takes off the tape on their mouths and unties them, âPeter no he has her-â May sobs.
âI-Itâs okay, everythingâs going to be okay. All of you need to get out of here now. Police are on their way, theyâll be around the corner,â they all nod in response, too shaken up to say anything. He leads them towards a backdoor entrance. âWhereâs Y/n?â he asks, before letting them go.
âSheâs in the back, w-with the Vulture,â Ned looks over at Peter.
âHe came back?â Peterâs breath hitches. âN-no time, okay go,â he pushes them out and quickly swings back inside.
âKaren, where are they?â Peter whimpers under his breath. She instantaneously shows the whole warehouse mapped out and where she detected two life forms.
Peter rushes over to the back and slams the door open. You sat there tied up in a chair and unconscious.
âY-Y/n,â he sobs, stumbling over towards you.
âI wouldnât,â a voice rings from behind you. Peter snaps his head up and shoots a web towards the voice.
The Vultureâs new and improved wings cut his web as it came towards him, âYou know Parker, all those years ago. When you were a little fucking Freshman, you took everything from me. Everything.â
âYouâre supposed to be in jail,â Peter snaps, walking over to him swinging a fist to his masked face. The Vultureâs wings are too fast and slashes his arm before Peter could make contact.Â
Peter lets out a strained yelp and gets kicked down by him. âNow, Iâm going to take everything away from you, starting off with your wife,â he spits, placing his weighted foot down on Peterâs head.
Peter yells in frustration and shoves him off, attacking him with all the power and rage he mustered up. The Vulture easily blocks his attacks and slams him against the wall, âTsk tsk. You never learn,â he steps on him roughly and repeatedly. Kicking him down with his weaponized and sharp boots. Peter weakly attempts to block his blows but fails. The Vulture chuckles darkly and walks over to you, shaking the blood off his boot.
âN-no, Y-Y/n, please n-no,â he gets up slowly, his ears beginning to ring and his sight becoming blurry. The Vulture circles you, cutting off your restraints and kicks you to the floor, your body falling to the ground with a thud.
You wake up to a sharp pain impaling your stomach, the Vultureâs point of his wing shoved into your torso. You let out a blood-curdling scream, bright red seeping out from your clothes. You feel something warm and thick begin to spill from your mouth.
âY/n!â Peter shouts, tears streaming down his face. He limps over to you and falls by your side, screaming out in agony.
Suddenly the walls shake and Tony appears with the rest of the Avengers that were nearby to help. âFuck,â the Vulture mutters and makes a run for it, about to fly off.
Tony blasts him down and flies down, managing to fight him off. Steve helps him out and they capture him, getting his weapons off him as they cuff him up.
You look around beginning to see white. Your ears fill with ringing and faint voices, until a familiar weak voice snaps you back into reality for a moment.
âM-my pretty girl, h-hey. Hey,â Peter whispers, brings your head onto his lap.
âP-pete?â you barely whisper, weakly raising your hand to his cheek.
âY-yup thatâs me. Your husband, the father to our child,â he shakily holds your hand against his cheek.
âB-Ben? Baby B-Benjamin?â you ask, eyes fluttering as you stare into Peterâs glossy eyes.
He nods in response, tears dripping down from his face onto yours.
You go silent for a while, trying to process everything that just happened. Peter chokes on his sobs, and brings you close to his bruised body.
âP-Peter?â you rasp.
âY-yes my love?â he sniffles, brushing a hair out of your face.
âW-was it worth it?â you ask tiredly, lips quivering as a slow tear rolls down your cheek.
He lets out a loud strained sob, shaking his head furiously, âN-no. No it wasnât. It wasnât,â he wipes away your single tear with his thumb.
You barely curl your lips in an attempt to smile and close your eyes, going limp in his arms. Peter bursts out in a fit of sobs and hugs you close to his body, his body trembling against yours.
Tony and the rest of the team stand around nearby, pain filling their hearts and tears welling up in their eyes as Peter cries out in misery.
Maybe Weâre Not Meant To Be
Alpha Izuku x Omega Reader
Warning: Sexual Content Below
Word Count: 3.9K
Two years of dating Izuku was no easy task. As sweet as the man is, he often blundered when it came to the love life (or the lack thereof) the two of you shared. No one questions his devotion to you. Youâre cold? Midoriya will give you the shirt off his back. Youâre hungry? Midoriya runs to the nearest store to grab you something (he doesn't care if itâs miles away). Two years of dating the most considerate person in the world yet, you selfishly yearned for more.
A mating mark; a silent reminder to onlookers that you were taken by one of the most eligible alphas in Japan. You wanted your skin to be marred by his long fangs and you wanted to leave your own mark on him. But after two years of waiting, it felt as though maybe he didnât want to mark you.Â
âMaybe weâre not meant to be.â
At first, you didnât mind that Midoriya wasn't quick to ask to bound you; it showed that he cared about you rather than force himself on you for the rest of your life. It was nice to have him court you but, youâre getting older. You never wanted to admit that biology was correct but, you felt yourself slowly facing the realities.
Itâs easy to push the want away, hiding it deep in your mind to only ponder over every once in a while. But, every once in a while becomes every day. It makes you wonder if thereâs something wrong with you.Â
You watch as all of your friends start to show off their marks, they start to get married, one by one having pups. And, youâre there for all of it. Silently cheering everyone else on from the sideline but, awaiting your turn to race. Â
Youâre quietly bitter. All you can think about is having mini versions of Midoriya and yourself running around. What would they look like? What would they smell like? Would they want to be heroes? Your desire to have a physical manifestation of your love to care for and nurture grew. It seems like the closest youâll ever get to that dream is when you're around other peopleâs pups.Â
âWow, Y/N! How did you get her to be that quiet?â Uraraka asks you with an amazed expression. She watched you cuddle her close to your chest, rocking her off to sleep after her latest tantrum. âYou're such a natural.â
âThank you. I've always loved kids,â you're mesmerised by the rise and fall of the pups chest as she breathes. Itâs nice having something so small depend on you.
âYouâd make a great mom,â she doesnât miss how you tense and, for the fleetest of moments, a scent of resentment seeps from your pores. Why should you have to sit and take care of someone elseâs baby when you want one? âIâm sorry if I said something wrong.â
âNo, no, youâre fine. I was just thinking,â you put the sleeping pup down to its duvet. âI want one. I want what you have so bad it hurts.â
âWhy donât you talk to Deku? Iâm sure heâd love to have a baby with you,â she smiles to push your hurt away but, it only makes you grimace eternally.Â
âFor us to talk, heâd have to be home for more than thirty minutes before he crashes out in bed,â that ends the conversation. You knew that dating a pro hero with ambitions like Izukuâs would be no walk in the park however, you didn't think it would be this hard.
You know he didnât mean to but, Midoriya has inadvertently neglected you. First, it was forgetting date night due to the need to pursue a link to a villian. Then, it was forgetting your birthday to finish some paperwork. It seemed like something always popped up that Midoriya had to follow but, you couldnât hold a grudge; heâs always been the type to help.
âYou knew what you were getting into when you chose to date him,â you blamed yourself. You can't just expect him to change (and you grew bitter for that as well).Â
âIzuku,â you started across from him on the floor. He looked up at you with those dark green hues, giving you his full attention. âIzuku, why havenât you marked me yet?â
âY-Y/N, ahh you caught me off guard. I mean, do you want me to mark you?â he always does this; reverse the question when he doesnât know the right answer.Â
âIzuku, I asked you a question,â you put your chopsticks down.
âWell, I donât think I should bind myself to you,â cue the dramatic scent drop. âN-No itâs not you, itâs me. Okay, that sounds clichĂŠ but I just, I don't want to keep you from finding someone better.â
âTHERE ISNâT ANYONE BETTER THAN YOU,â the words were stuck in your mouth. The conversation should have ended there but you were hurt.Â
âY/N, please, say something. Are you mad?â
âYes.â âNo.â
âAre you sure? You havenât take-â
âIâm fantastic. Just not as hungry as I thought I was. But, Iâm glad you told me. Now, how was your day?â It hurts but your grin through it. The conversation shouldnât end there but, you have no desire to see what other bullshit can leave the alphaâs mouth.Â
You know he doesnât mean it in this way but, doesnât that mean that Midoriya doesnât see you as a life partner? Wouldnât it be safe to say that heâd leave you if he found someone better? Werenât you just wasting your time?Â
âAre you sure youâre okay? We can talk about it if you want,â he pauses to yawn. âMaybe, tomorrow though. It was such a long day. All Might was-â ahh yes, All Might. Youâre sure you know more about him than you do about Midoriyaâs mother.Â
You feel unwanted, used, and taken advantage of. You do everything for him: cook, clean, support, help him with leads that stump him, drag him to bed, bandage him up. Yet, your efforts have only gotten you in a position where youâre positive Midoriya only keeps you around for entertainment. Itâs a bad feeling.
But, you canât bring yourself to pack your belongings and leave. Your inner Omega is intertwined with his, even without the mating mark. She wants to be with him till the very end; till either one of you dies and the other soon follows into the afterlife.Â
But, the feelings just keep growing. Theyâre in the back of your mind as you kiss Izuku, theyâre in the corner of your bedroom as you cuddle with him, theyâre blaring in the car as you falsely laugh. So, you suppose itâs half your fault that things have gotten to the point that they currently are.Â
Today, you woke up in a particularly good mood. Midoriya had made your favorite breakfast and kissed you roughly before he left the house.Â
âI have a feeling somethingâs going to happen today; make sure to call me when you get to work and when you get home,â his lips pressed down on you almost urgently, making your insides quiver. âAnd, make sure you check your surroundings.âÂ
âI will Izuku. Iâll see you later,â and he went out to save the world. You got dressed in some leggings and a blouse and headed off to your cafĂŠ. While it wasnât the flashiest job for a person with a powerful quirk like yours, you loved watching the little pups pick out what they wanted. Occasionally, you could even pick them up.Â
âHai, Y/N. I have some fresh scones waiting to be put out,â one of your workers greeted you. You h/c colored hair was pulled into a messy game, a few tendril framing your face. There was a low gust of air from the door behind you. Another mother with her pup.Â
You got to work helping wherever you could, throwing powder sugar at your workers whenever they were being too impatient; you have a knack for doing things slowly till you get them perfect.Â
âAs to be expected of such an analytical quirk,â one of your best employees, Kagey, tells you.Â
âYouâre just mad because I wonât allow you to rush my beautiful cakes,â you stick your tongue out at him.Â
âNo, Iâm mad because youâve made me wait for ten minutes just so you could place those fucking cakes. And theyâre placed crooked. I couldâve been over there serving that hottie. Look at himmmm,â Kagey shakes your shoulders while fawning over some unsuspecting soul.Â
âUmmm, you forget I have Izuku,â you raise one of your eyebrows.Â
âThereâs no crime in looking. Itâs not like youâve got a mark,â you crack your neck. âSorry, I forget thatâs a sore subject for you. â
âItâs fine. And, whoâs the poor victim youâre staring at this time,â he points to a man youâre well acquainted with: Monoma Neito.
His blonde hair is still light but heâs grown it to be a little above his shoulders. Those beady eyes that used to be rimming with anger and discontent are finally happy and playful. Heâs filled out, body-wise, and you can tell heâs bulging with muscle.Â
âIzukuâs better.â
âDamn, that glow hit him like a truck,â Kagey pushes your shoulders forward. âOkay, bitch, stop being pushy.âÂ
âOfcourse, you know a beefcake like that. Introduce me to him! Iâd love to get my tongue on him,â you shudder with disgust at that mental image. âDonât look like that. My men always leave me satisfied.â
âI didnât know that was how people describe STIâs nowadays. I really am a Boomer now,â he smack you upside the head. âOkay, okay, Iâm going. Just stop hitting me.â
You wander over to Monoma, trying to decide whatâs the best way to approach him. You decide on being direct.Â
âMonoma,â he turns and his face lights up with recognition. âHai, itâs been so long. Welcome to my shopâ
âY/N!? You own this place? I wouldâve thought youâd want to be a hero. Itâs good to see you,â he grabs your hand in his. His hands are warm, no doubt heâs probably feeling the strength of your quirk. Heâs always been the handsy type. âYouâre single? What happened to Izuku?â
âWeâre still together. Weâre just taking things slow,â you shrugged off his gaze. âPlenty of people do it.â
âSo, no mark and no ring. Youâre basically single,â you ruffle up and his tone. You had forgotten he can be as blunt as yourself, one of the main reasons you had been good friends.Â
âYou could say that if thatâs what you believe. But, this isnât about me. My friend over there, Kagey,â you point your thumb over at the fool. âHe wanted to know if youâd like to go on a date.â
âYou and I both know Iâm straight. But, I appreciate the offer,â Monoma raises his voice so Kagey can hear. You can hear muffled cursing about straight men behind you following his statement. âBut, Iâd love to take you out sometime this week.â
âI have Izuku.â
âDo you really? You know alphas are preconditioned to mark what they feel belongs to them. What does that say about you?â He knows exactly how to manipulate your mind.Â
â...when are you free?â
                             ***
You were shaking as you applied your makeup. Today was the day that you were going to go on a small date with Monoma. Nothing too serious; just an outing with a friend that just so happens to be an alpha.Â
Why were you shaking? Well, you hadnât told Izuku about your plans. He normally gets home later in the night and you had planned on getting back from your date earlier than him. But, what if he found out? Well, it shouldn't matter, right?Â
He did tell you that you could find someone else (although, now as the moment was nearing, you started to doubt how serious he was when he told you). So, it shouldnât be a big deal. Itâs not like you were planning on running away with this alpha. But, would Izuku understand that?Â
âHeâs not even going to find out. No point in worrying about it,â you hissed as you accidentally poked your eye with your makeup brush.Â
The soft material of the skirt stretched across your thighs as you paced through the halls. Were you really going to do this?Â
âY/N, Iâm home baby. I picked up some pizza for us,â you froze. Out of all the times for Izuku to come home early, he chose the day when you were going to converse with another alpha. You thought about trying to run back to the bedroom but he was already halfway to the kitchen and he would most likely hear you.Â
âOhhhh thatâs great. Really great,â you inched towards the couch to try to cover yourself in the pillows.Â
âYeah, why are you covered in the pillows? Are you building a new nest here? Want me to go get my shirts?â You immediately felt guilty all over again. Here you were about to betray him and heâs being selfless.Â
âNOOO, no, just, stay right there,â you sink in further as you hoped heâd leave you alone. Unfortunately for you, Izuku doesnât leave anything alone if he thinks something is wrong.Â
âWhatâs wrong, omega?â He gets closer and sniffs the air. âAre you wearing perfume?â
âYeahhhh, wanted to try something new,â you avoid eye contact.Â
âWhy arenât you looking at me?â
â...â
âOmega, look at me please.â
âIzuku, Iâm just not feeling well.â
âLook at me.â
You look at him with small tears in the corners of your eyes.Â
âAwww, omega. Are you okay? Whatâs wrong?â He starts to emit a soothing smell for you.Â
âIzuku, I have a-â the doorbell interrupts you. You know itâs Monoma. You know you canât get up to get the door. You know that you are fucked.Â
âIâll get it. But, when they leave, we are talking about whatâs wrong,â you gulp. You hear Midoriya open the door.Â
âMidoriya, itâs nice to see you. Is Y/N ready?â Thereâs the nail in the coffin.Â
âWhat do you mean?
âWe have a date tonight.â
âNo you fucking donât.â
âUm, we do. I asked her out the other day at her cafĂŠ,â you hear silence till you hear the unmistakable sound of Izukuâs growl. The air becomes stiffling as his pheromones threaten to choke you to death. You cower in the pillows, listening to Izuku grab Monoma and pull him into the room. No matter how much he told you heâd be fine with you finding another alpha, you shouldâve known your actions would drive him feral.Â
âWhy the fuck is he here?â Izuku snarled in your face. You were silently sobbing, ashamed of what your actions had caused. âFUCKING ANSWER ME, OMEGA.â
âY-youâre the one that said you werenât mating me in case I found someone better,â you pushed the pillow into his face as you stood to defend yourself. âWhy are you so fucking mad? You drove me to this.â
âDonât try to fucking blame me. You should have told me. So, you really want him?â You nodded your head to spite him. âNo, you donât. You just want to piss me off. Well, if thatâs the objection, you accomplished your goal. Now, strip.â
âWhat?â The false confidence was wearing off.Â
âYou wanted to make me mad and you did. You want a mating mark? Iâll give you one. Now, strip for your punishment,â you shakily point to Monoma that was wide-eyed in Izukuâs grip. âYes, in front of him. He needs to see you belong to me since heâs clearly a visual learner.â
You slowly reach behind and unzip your skirt. You push the fabric down your legs to bunch at you ankles, step out of them, and shakily pull at the hem of your shirt. You lock eyes with Monoma as you pull it above your head. The air feels cold against your soft skin. You stand there in your bra and panties, awaiting Izukuâs next command.Â
âI said strip. Keep going,â you gulp.Â
âI should leave,â Izuku slams Monoma into a chair. He grips his shoulder so hard you can hear a small crack.Â
âNahhhh, stay. Iâm sure you knew she belonged to me but, this is a good reminder,â Izuku turns back to watch your breasts spill from your bra. Your nipples pebble from the attention youâre getting. You slip your panties down your legs, reaching for a pillow to cover yourself.Â
âNo, show him what belongs to me. Turn around and bend over,â you slowly turn, placing your hands on the sofa behind you. You clench your legs together. You bend at the waist, hearing two sharp intakes of breath.Â
You stand there like an exhibit, slick pooling in between your legs. Youâre sure they can see your nether lips glistening with arousal as well as the wall, your breasts hanging from the position.Â
âLook at how wet she is for me, Monoma. I bet you wish she was like that for you,â Izukuâs breath fans across your ass. His hands gently cups your waist, tugging you backwards so he can muzzle your ass crack. âSuch a beautiful body. All mine.â
âIZUKU,â you scream out as he suddenly slaps your ass. It makes more slick fall between your legs but, it still stings as a punishment. âIâll be good omega.â
âI know baby. Youâre always such a good girl. You just need to be corrected. Iâve been giving you a little too much free reign. Wanted to be sensitive alpha. Wanted to give you time. No more of that,â you shivered at the promise. âGonna give you exactly what you need.â
A tirade of smacks rain down on your behind, lighting up your backside. You yelp and try to pull away but are restrained by Izukuâs strong arms. Heâs the one supporting your weight as you crash down against the couch, the front half of your body slumped down.Â
âAwww, is Omega tired? But, weâre just getting started,â from behind you, you can hear Monomaâa breathing get heavier. âLetâs give fuckface a good show baby.â
Youâre about to question what he means when Izuku stands up, walks over, and rips the tie from Monomaâs neck. He walks back over to you, tying your arms together.Â
âIâm in control,â he says. You quiver when you hear Izukuâs knees hit the floor behind you. Only moments later his face is buried in your heat, lapping like a dog. It sounds so lewd to hear him slurp at your juices.
He starts off slowly kissing the backs of your thighs, gripping you by your ass cheeks as he pulls your globes apart. You feel exposed when he takes an exaggerated sniff. âIâve missed this. Need to start being more attentive to my baby.â
He licks up and down your slit, lightly nibbling on your clit as he circles it, pulling it between his lips to give it a harsh suck. Your hole clenches around nothing as you moan and try to cant your hips into his face. Your efforts are rewarded with a warning smack.Â
âJust enjoy my tongue,â he positions you to be on your knees as he continues to eat you out. He first slips in one finger to the knuckle, reveling in the debauched groan that leaves your beautiful lips. Your lips are parted as drool rubs down the left side of your face. Your eyes go crossed eyed from Izuku slipping in another finger and curling them upwards, those two fingers touching that spongy texture inside of you. The perfect Ahegao face. A vision of wrecked.Â
âThatâs it, cum all over my fingers,â he continues to finger fuck you through your orgasm, latching back onto your clit. You shiver from the overstimulation, wanting to run with nowhere to go. Youâve forgotten Monoma as you whimper.Â
âZukuâ too much. Please,â youâre shaking as you bite into the sofa to mute your screams.Â
âAht aht aht, I wanna hear you fucking moan for me. Let him know whoâs making you feel this good,â he allows his lone hand to stroke your stomach, knowing that was one of your sweet spots. You whine loudly as you cum once again, mascara running. Â
âNooo more. Izuku. Please. Alpha,â youâre stuck there. Forced to take all the pleasure he gives you.Â
âI think you can give me more baby,â he removes himself from you as he unbuttoned his jeans. âMonoma, you wanna know something funny.â
âWhat?â
âI bet you thought youâd be the one to fuck her pretty pussy tonight,â Izuku laughs with no amusement behind the sound. âNever thought youâd be forced to watch.â
Izuku pushes his hard cock between your legs, smearing your juices across his shaft. He grabs his cock as he toys with your entrance, pushing the tip of his cock between your lips and groaning at the sight. Your pussy grips the tips in a vice, trying to suck him in further.Â
âAlpha, stop teasing me. Please. More. Give it to me.â
âI thought you couldnât take anymore,â he teases.Â
âPleaseeeee ohiuuhhh yess,â you throw your head back when you feel him push all the way in in one motion. Your toes curl as his cock strains against your walls, forcing you to take it all. He expertly pulls back and gives an experimental thrust.Â
âLook at that pussy, Monoma. Isnât it nice? Too bad youâll never get to feel my pussy,â he sets a bruising pace, never giving you a chance to recover. You hear your own whines mixed in with his pelvis slapping against your ass, your body rocking forward from the force of his body.Â
He wraps his hand around your neck, lifting your body so he can make you meet his thrusts. Youâve lost count of how many times youâve cum around his cock but, youâre okay with being used like a cocksleeve.
âIâm gonna fuck my babies into your tight pussy. Gonna breed you,â you mewl. âIs that what you wanted? Pups?âÂ
You nod as you cry, partly from the overstimulation but also from the emotional state youâve been reduced to.Â
âIâll give you as many pups as you want. Looks like Iâll have to fuck you out of your mind more to get you to talk to me,â he growls beside your side and he leans over you, crushing you beneath him as he pushes your body to scrunch beneath him, pounding you like he hated you.Â
âAre you gonna cum again,â you nod due to your raw throat. Youâre clenching and the pleasure starts to build but, this time, it feels different. Your vision goes out as you spasm, stars coming across your eyes as you squirt all over his cock, making a mess on the cock bellow you. Your tightness pushes Izuku into his orgasm.Â
âCum for me, Omega. Cum for your alpha,â you whine as you spasm but nothing comes out. Heâs pushed you into a dry orgasm. You feel his hot spurts of cum enter your pussy, coating everywhere inside of you. His teeth sink into your neck, making you his forever.Â
âIzuku,â you whine.Â
âFeels good, omega?â You nod. He slowly pulls out from behind you, tapping your ass like a horse.Â
âGet the fuck out,â Monoma doesnât have to be told twice as he runs out. Izuku grabs a few baby wipes from the kitchen and comes back to wipe your pussy.Â
âYouâre mine. Never forget that.â
A small rant on Forwood (and why I donât like it as both a Tyler and Caroline stan.)
(Before I start I should say I very much like Tyler more than Caroline, so it honestly might show in this rant. Regardless, itâs not an attack on her character, more so how poor writing makes Caroline worse than she actually is. Anywho.)Â
I legitimately cannot say one good thing about forwood. Except what @/hizziemikaelson actually made me realize was that it was Carolineâs best ship, but Tylerâs worst. Since the show likes to portray Caroline as everyoneâs emotional savior, they very much knew what they were doing with getting them together. Ty was the patient, Care was the therapist. âTyler has âanger issuesâ? perfect! Caroline will now be his entire rock because thatâs her job and we donât know how to write this character without EVERYONE falling in love with her in someway because weâre WEIRD!â Like. lmao what? They made Caroline get so carried away with that shit that it turned manipulative. She subconsciously wanted him to be so dependent on her because someone wanting her for once? So unrealistic! (I say that sarcastically because itâs bullshit, but this is a forwood rant, not a Caroline rant.) and you best believe she used that to her advantage till the very end. She wanted Tyler to be nothing without her. And in the showâs eyes for a very great while, he was. Everything Ty did from s2 to s5 was âcause Caroline influenced it or wanted him to, unless it was related to his pack and even then he had to fight to be able to do that on his own. (Remember when she didnât give two shits that his pack member died? (Inherently cause of Elena and Caroline wanted him to help her save her, might I add.) they made his happiness rely on her. Like I said, he was nothing without Caroline Forbes. Literally. Who swooped in when he was going through his father passing away? Caroline. Who was there when he found out his uncle died? Caroline. Who was DEFINITELY there when his mother died? Caroline. Which isnât necessarily a TERRIBLE thing, but in this context itâs not cute/healthy, itâs dehumanizing. Because instead Tylerâs grief turns into her grief. We can only focus on Tyler if Caroline is mentioned/in the shot. Itâs so fucking annoying, especially as such an extreme Tyler stan. I want to know about Tyler Lockwood, not Caroline Forbes and her werewolf boyfriend. But thatâs what they did. Thatâs what they made forwood. They turned it into in the relationship only Caroline can excel at. He loved and cared for her and at most all she did was like his body and like the fact that he cared about her. I mentioned this before in a rant of mine but Caroline only started dating him because he actually listened to her yap all the time and showed her more attention than Matt ever did. (Without a fight atleast.) other than that, what else did they have? Vampire and werewolf, weâre to believe they despise each other and Caroline and Tyler are mystic fallâs answer to Romeo & Juliet? Fuck outta here. I know Caroline never cared about that boy because instead of actually being furious at Damon for killing him, it was, âHe was my first love. *Conflicted but ready to get this over with frowny sad face*â and my favorite ignorant bullshit line that she told KLAUS, âYou were never the villain in my story.â Oh, we know. We figured that out when you fucked him in the woods while you were supposed to love Tyler but you know, semantics :).Â
Itâs fucked because I could see the appeal? Like genuinely. Especially as someone who wanted THE BOTH OF THEM to be happy, it couldâve been the relationship where both of them shined, not just Tyler being Carolineâs boy toy and Caroline being propped up as âa soft uwu baby next to a bad boy with a mean temper and she has to calm him down all the time despite not being his registered therapist.â They also wanted forwood to be the one good unrequited ship on the show and Carolineâs first great ship but thatâs the problem, it was hers, not Tylerâs. Basically it was Carolineâs world, Tyler was simply living in it.
I feel like nothing defines forwood more than the scene where Tyler finds out Caroline slept with Klaus because everything from that is just them in a nutshell. Tyler trying to calm himself down/diffuse the situation because he doesnât want to blow up, he knows itâll hurt Caroline by doing so but heâs hurting, he needs an outlet. Caroline, whoâs used to always being his outlet, is instantly threatened and actually doesnât feel like she should be in the wrong for fucking Klaus, so suddenly sheâs nervous and now sheâs even more nervous because she canât calm him down this time. Stefan, with his fat headed ass, instantly only sees Caroline being threatened and canât even process being mad at her, he tries to defend Care, almost gaslighting Tyler into feeling like heâs the one that should be either apologizing or not taking it so hard. It was such a mess of a situation and such a pivotal moment I don't know how they even survived after that. It showed that forwood was so one-sided. No sex/grief scenes or declaration of love couldâve changed that. He fell in love with Caroline because she was all he had. She fell in âloveâ with him because she was horny and needed a lap dog to heal her insecurities/wounds. No other reason.Â
Personally I think they couldâve been more than what they were and couldâve been a great way to show Tylerâs development, Carolineâs development and even that julie & co. actually can make good relationships/have good writing. But unfortunately, none of those things happened except showcasing that Tyler Lockwood never mattered to anyone in the tvdu long before his death and Caroline Forbes is figuratively and literally the golden girl of tvd, despite them trying so hard to make her seem like sheâs not. Tyler never stood a chance in that relationship.
#i wrote this when i couldn't stop thinking abt how much i love tyler so#i just have. too many feelings abt this dude#and my rewatch has me so fuckin irritated#like Tyler Iâm gon get you outta this dumbass show on god đđ#Tyler Lockwood#anti forwood#anti caroline forbes#just in case#Caroline warriors pls know i love her i just donât like her near my son#the vampire diaries#t rants abt tvd#shit t says
Almost lost him
Pairing: James âRhodeyâ Rhodes x Stark!readerÂ
Synopsis:Â Tonyâs little sister had always had feelings for one James R. Rhodes. Sheâs kept it a secret for years, but will everything come out after he is injured during the fight against Cap?
word count: 2.4k+
Warnings: Brief cannon violence. Angst. Mentions paralysis. Swearing. Age gap. Also I have a specific age for the character mentioned.Â
A/N: This has been sitting in my WIPâs for over a year because I loved it so much and I didnât want to end it poorly lmao. I know no ones gonna read it since he isnât a popular character, but oh well. I love this fic and I love Rhodey so thatâs all that matters.Â
Tony and (Y/N) Stark have saved the world from terrorists once again.
âCan you believe this title?â you laugh showing Rhodey the article on your phone.Â
âI was there too,â he says gruffly.Â
âYou just arenât special enough,â you tease, sticking your tongue out like youâre five and not thirty-six.Â
âNot everyoneâs lucky enough to be a Stark,â Tony, your annoying but lovable older brother, enters the compoundâs kitchen.
Tony took you under his wing and raised you since your parents died. It was a lot for a twenty-one year old to handle, no one he knew had to take care of an eleven year old. Especially one with newly discovered powers. They werenât much, but when emotions would get overwhelming you would have white colored beams come from your hands. This later helped Tony come up with the idea for the repulsors on his Iron Man suit, which you helped him build.
As the years passed, you got a better hold on your new found powers. The more you and Tony dug into your parents past, you started to think that your dad had either given you something when you were a baby or your mom was given something while pregnant to make you like this. Your Dad always called you special, but you never thought you were this special.
âAny progress with Steve?â you ask hopefully. You know how much Tony values his friendship with Cap, he just wonât admit it. Especially because heâs hurt.Â
âNo,â he grunts, but tries to brush it off like he doesnât care. You and Rhodey give each other unamused looks, clearly not believing the bullshit Tony is trying to feed you.
âI think you should try to reach out to him again, you clearly miss him Tony,â you frown at the dark haired man in front of you.
âI agree with (Y/N/N),â Rhodey speaks up from behind you. Heâs closer than you remember, and you shiver as you feel the little licks of his breath on your neck as he speaks.Â
âYou love birds can shut up now,â Tony rolls his eyes, he leaves the kitchen without anything.Â
Heat immediately rushes to your face and you canât look Rhodey in the eye as you stutter out an apology for Tonyâs actions. You quickly leave the kitchen before he can respond, wanting to put distance between your blushing self and the man you had been in love with for years.Â
--Â
You had hoped that the conversation in the kitchen would have convinced Tony to reach out and make amends with Steve and half of the Avengers. But things only continued to escalate, where it seemed a battle between friends was unavoidable. So that's how you ended up in Germany, with your newest recruit Spider-Man, facing off against the people you cared most about in this world.
âRhodey!â you scream as you watch him plummet to the Earth. Time seems to slow to a near standstill and all you can do is watch, too far away from him to be able to help somehow. Your knees buckle and you hit the ground at the same time his body does. There's a scream thatâs so loud it rattles the windows of the airport hanger, a scream you werenât even aware left your own lips.Â
Vision tries to approach you, but you let out a sound that's between a sob and a scream as he gets closer. Youâre angry, and scared, you can feel a rush of something in your veins. You ball your hands in fists, bringing them to your chest as you curl into yourself.Â
The sound of metal crunching together pulls you from your rocking back and forth on your knees. You see a white glow, one that you're extremely familiar with, dissipating from around two shipping containers, now crushed together where vision was hovering. If he had stayed solid, he would have been crushed. Youâre shaking even more as you stare down at your hands, you had never been able to move objects before. You could have hurt somebody. You canât dwell on it too long because Peter runs to your side, telling you that Rhodey had a heartbeat and help was on the way.Â
It had felt like hours since Tony, Peter, and you had landed back down in the states. Dr. Cho was working with a spine specialist and a neurosurgeon to figure out the extent of the damage. After a while, they had updated you three, telling you that Rhodey broke his spine and they were taking him into surgery. Tony had left to go fiddle with one of his suits, his coping mechanism. He left the kid with you because he didnât want you alone.Â
âHow did you two meet?â Peter breaks the silence.
âHmm?â you look away from the painting in front of you for the first time since you sat in the waiting room chair, to look at the boy.Â
âMr. Rhodes, how did you two meet?â he clarifies.Â
âThatâs a long story,â your eyes glaze over as memories start to come flooding back.
âI have time,â Peter gives you a small smile, you can really see what Tony seeâs in the kid. The kindness that his Aunt May has taught him is abundantly clear, you know heâs only asking for your benefit.
âHe met Tony when they went to MIT together, he somehow found a way to put up with my brother's antics. I didnât meet him until two years after Tony graduated, so I was eleven,â you let out a little laugh as you realize just how long the older man has been in your life, and in your heart. âHe came to my parents funeral for support for Tony, but he became my support system. Everyone seemed to ignore me and go straight for the golden boy, but Tony became too overwhelmed quickly. He introduced me to Rhodey who was the first one, besides Tony of course, to ask me how I was. He ended up spending the entire wake and funeral with me, giving me support and effectively distracting me from my pain.â
You look over at the younger boy, who seems to be staring at you with fascination. He sees the pain on your face when you stop talking, reaching over he grabs your hand loosely. Testing the waters to see if youâll pull away from affection like Tony has with him. You give him a thankful smile and hold his hand before continuing your story.
âHe joined the military not long after that. At first I would send him care packages and letters so he didnât feel alone when he was deployed. One day when I was writing a letter one of Tonyâs flings came into the kitchen and called me a pathetic child because I was crushing on Tonyâs friend after I explained what I was doing. He never got that letter, or any after that. We didnât really talk much after that, if he came to visit Tony Iâd be pleasant before locking myself in my room. I guess I was embarrassed over my school girl crush. Years passed, lots of years, before Tony went missing, James was the one that told me what happened. And in those following months he would rarely leave my side, he wanted to make sure I was okay. We were finally both adults, and we gained a real friendship.âÂ
âThat sounds like more than a friendship,â Peter sends you an innocent look. You furrow your eyebrows at him in response, Rhodey definitely doesnât like you back. âIâm just saying, if Liz was like that with me I would be ecstatic that she liked me back.â
âHe sees me as a little sister, Peter,â your heart breaking a little more knowing that youâll never be able to be with the man youâve loved for years. Before Peter can refute you, Rhodeyâs Neurosurgeon walks into the waiting room- some guy named Dr. Strange.Â
âHow is he?â you jump out of your seat, Peter quickly following suit, his hand falling from yours at the movement.Â
âHeâs out of surgery Miss. Stark,â his voice coming out as cocky and full of himself, like heâs overly proud that he did this surgery. âBut the recovery will be the difficult part.â
âWhat happened? Whatâs still wrong? And when can I see him?â youâre shooting out questions faster than the surgeon can answer.
âIâm not at liberty to discuss that with you Miss. Stark, and you canât see him until heâs out of the ICU,â the smug look is still on the surgeon's face, making you grow angrier with each word that leaves his mouth.Â
âExcuse me?â Peter looks between you and the surgeon with wide curious eyes.Â
âYou arenât family,â he states matter-of-factly. âTherefore I canât tell you and you canât see him.â
Your eye twitches in anger as your body starts to warm, your powers start to react to the strong emotion. You take a deep calming breath, keeping you from accidentally lashing out at the surgeon.Â
âI suggest you rethink that answer,â you say deathly calm, Peter stares at you in awe as you talk back to the man. âAnd consider who paid for all of the new state-of-the-art Stark technology and equipment you have in this hospital. Things Iâm sure that you used in that surgery, that I donated to this hospital through the outreach program that I created. Technology created by both me and my brother.â
âIs there a problem here?â a manâs voice comes from behind you, he sounds irritated that someoneâs making a scene. You turn around to face the man, who is wearing a badge that says medical director on it. Perfect. His eyes widen as soon as he recognizes who you are.Â
âActually there is,â you frown. âMy colleague, my friend. My favorite person after my brother really, he just had a pretty big surgery, but your surgeon here wonât tell me any details or let me go see him. So yes, we have a huge problem.â
âIâm so sorry Miss. Stark,â he exclaims. âWhy donât we go update you in private.âÂ
âDid I sound like a bitch?â you frown, whispering to Peter as the two of you follow the MD and the surgeon. He nods a little with a smirk adorning his face.Â
âBut it was awesome!â you grin at the young boy, remembering the excitement you felt when you saw Tony use his name to get what he wanted for the first time.Â
âHeâs paralyzed,â the surgeon throws the statement around like it isnât a big deal as soon as the four of you enter a separate room. âFrom the waist down. There was nothing we could do.â
Your heart and your lungs seem to stop working at the same time. Peter discreetly uses his super strength to catch you as your legs give out at the surgeon's words. Tears start to pour down your face as you realize all of the things Rhodey will never be able to again. Like never being able to help defend his country again, or chase after you when you steal the last cookie that he wanted.Â
You canât help but feel guilty. If he had never met you and Tony he would be fine. He would still be able to do what he loves. He never would have been put in that situation. Heâll never be able to walk again. He wonât have the opportunity to dance at his wedding or chase his children around if he decided to have either of those.Â
âI know itâs a lot Miss. Stark,â the MDâs voice is muffled. âBut there was nothing we could have done-â
âWhen can I see him?â you cut the doctor off.Â
âI could take you to him now,â he glares at the surgeon. âHe wonât wake for at least a few more hours.â
âPeter, go call Tony and tell him the update,â you look at the young boy, he gives your hand a reassuring squeeze before heading back to the waiting room.Â
The surgeon and the MD both ramble on about Rhodeyâs condition but their voices sound muffled- like youâre underwater. You feel like you're suffocating in all the pain and grief you feel for the love of your life. Heâs lying on the bed, oxygen tubing up his nose, at least ten wires connected to him, and the disgusting beep of his heart monitor reminds you how lucky you are that heâs still here with you.Â
The two men quickly leave you with Rhodey, but not before the MD promises that heâll be under constant supervision and heâll receive the best treatments they offer. Not that you're shocked to hear that with the scene you cause in the waiting room. You grab Rhodeyâs hand, careful to avoid yanking the IV in it, pulling his hand up to your mouth to give it a feather light kiss. Tears slip down your cheeks as you stare at his still body, you were so close to losing him today.Â
The tears have stopped by the time Tony shows up close to an hour later, he had dropped Peter off at home before coming up to the hospital room. Your older brother looks as distressed as you feel, although he seems to be tryin to hide it more than you are.Â
âHow is he?â his voice is quieter than you imagined, like heâs afraid any louder will make you crumble.Â
âStable,â your voice is monotonous, and you refuse to tear your eyeâs from Rhodeyâs face as you respond to Tony. âAbout as good as he could be I guess.â
âHow are you?â he cuts you off as you go to respond that you're fine. âAnd donât bullshit me (Y/N/N), youâve been in love with him since you were eleven. How are you feeling?â
You donât respond, not with words at least. Instead you do crumble, letting out a quiet sob as you grip Tonyâs hand that he was about to place on your shoulder. Tony runs his free hand through your hair and down your back, trying to soothe you like he used to when you would have nightmares after your parents deaths.Â
âWe almost lost him today Tony, I almost lost him-â another sob racks through your body. âAnd now heâs paralyzed. He can never walk again, can never defend his Country again. And for what? A disagreement between you and Steve? We could have lost him Tony for something so fucking stupid.â
Before Tony can respond, a muffled voice breaks through the tension in the room. The voice is gravely, but one you love so dearly, itâs Rhodeyâs. â(Y/N)?â
Thoughts on Dark Fortress #2
(This post is under a cut due to spoilers.)
So late with this one! some stuff irl was keeping me really busy and hyper-distracting me lately, but itâs finally over now so Iâm back on my bioware bullshit. :D
Overall there were a lot of beautiful or awe-inspiring scenes in this issue, and a lot of great, meaningful / poignant character interactions and moments between characters. Itâs pretty impressive actually how much was able to be packed in. I posted some of my favorite panels here. also omg! the action sequences! the big reveal! the ending!! woww
cool scene-setting, panned out shot of Neromenian and behind it, the Dark Fortress, to immediately pull you back into the world and âwhere we left offâ. the combination of ruined dead trees, red lights, lightning and fire/smoke is very atmospheric and hints at whatâs ahead
âFrom this... city, if we can call it thatâ is a sick burn and reminds you that the Qunari are technologically more advanced than most of the rest of Thedas, from their cannons to their aqueducts
more individually distinct Qunari soldiers, sth I again appreciate
! last issue there were big âYou havenât seen the last of Tractus!â vibes, naturally, but I didnât expect him to escape by stabbing and killing the Qunari using a chair-leg..!!
the last panel on the first page of Karasten is really good. the way itâs colored, the way itâs lit, the light and shadow, the fiery backdrop, cinders floating, the details of his expression.. đ it also makes me think to the possible future, to DA4 when mainland Thedas may be continuing to face the entirety of the Antaam
in Vaeaâs acrobatics scene on the bridge, I know rationally that sheâll be fine but couldnât help but worry for her. again I like how they donât shy away from showcasing Vaeaâs specific abilities. also the attention to detail - youâd think some rocks are just some rocks, but it highlights the risk sheâs undertaking that if she falls itâs into rough seas which could dash her against the jagged rocks :âS. Vaea, gooooo!
Fenrisâ âEnterprising girlâ line has big âClever girlâ meme energy :D
my heart canât take Fran and Autumn leaning over the edge after Vaea in worry ;; or Aaron looking back in concern over his shoulder ;; or Franâs tender reassurance ;; or Autumnâs Worried expression ;; the care and bonds which have grown between this group of characters ;;
notice Aaron starts drinking when Vaeaâs away from them and theyâre beginning to grow worried about her safety. the poor manâs nerves and stress levels
Fran touching the vegetation while sheâs considering if she could use her magic to open the entrance from the outside is a nice touch
did Marius leap in front of Fenris and Fran there when the entrance opened?? damn, heâs quick. and the three of them look all scary and formidable here ready for combat. notice how the curve of the door and the spikes that go into the ground, and the composition of this panel, make it look like theyâre standing in front of an opened dragonâs maw? âteethâ, a rumbling âroarâ.. some nice foreshadowing here.
the reunion panels are so cute. Autumnâs lil tum as she jumps and Fran and Fenrisâ lil smiles of relief and at Autumnâs reaction to seeing Vaea, then a rare happy beam from Aaron.. feel.. the love ;__;
red lighting in the tunnel sets a dangerous, dramatic build-up mood
đ more info on Fenrisâ past, on the specifics of the process which gave him his markings. in the panel where he says that it took a long time, his shadow on the wall behind him reminds me of the shadow of his past that has dogged him for so long :(
Fenris and Marius height difference
discussion of the process shows the power difference between blue and red lyrium. blue lyrium took a long time, red lyrium is almost instant
Autumn is such an intrepid little explorer and alert scout, tail and ears up, head forward. good girl!
âI just... worry about you, my girlâ  â§ÂşÂˇ(Ë ËĚŁĚŁĚĽâËĚŁĚŁĚĽ )â§ÂşÂˇË Iâll be so sad if these are death flags for Aaron and he doesnât make it out of here. also note Fran in this panel, who recently had to kill her own father and is still dealing with that, watching the strongly paternal moment between Aaron and Vaea :(
love Vaeaâs faith in Aaron and her sense of humor. also I donât know why, maybe itâs because Vaea met Sebastian, but her âMaker, no!â, although in a completely different and light-hearted context, reminds me of Sebastianâs âMaker nooo!â at the end of DA2 hh
the reference again to Hawke, who Fenris saw haunted by what they tried to do - save their mother - and couldnât :â(. also with the shadow in this panel, hereâs another person struggling with the shadow of his past qq. this is later emphasized again in Aaron when he continues to talk about his past and in the panel is a chain and manacle. smart visual metaphors, a must in the comic medium with limited space
mushroom skull đđ
âIt isnât about what Iâve done. It isnât about my failures. Or my choices. Itâs about their impactâ - heâs misty-eyed here as he thinks back to Ostagar.. does this line btw seem almost meta to anyone else btw? :D it feels like a meta reference to the experience of DA players and PCs, who are always having to deal with the impacts of their choices
I wanna point out that I was right on reading issue #1, when I said âIâm positive that in panel 2 here, itâs the exact moment when he sees Cailan dieâ ;;
So Aaron is also a veteran of the Battle of Denerim
reference to the Hero of Ferelden -Â âThose were someone elseâs battlesâ. Iâm being captain obvious here but I canât help but [heart pitter-patter] at any and all references to the HoF
I like the.. parallel? is that the word? Aaronâs stories were him trying to inspire people to make a change, or him trying to convince himself of that. and now hereâs Vaea, inspiring Aaron with her words in these panels. the little guys can make a difference! in the world of Thedas, you donât need to be a big bombastic hero or a Player Character to have an impactÂ
lmao Fenris right on cue. the moments of humor/light-heartedness are nice because they break up the tension and are sprinkled throughout without derailing build-up or taking away from dramatic story impact. yknow?
yeah Aaron!! leave it behind. leave it to rot with mr mushroom skull (and hey the mushroom skull was there for a reason). again tho if this is a death flag iÂ
Fenris straight down to business with the tactics
its cute how close Autumn has been sticking to Fran
Tessa checking in on Fran again, as she did in issue 1
Could Vaeaâs âWell, shitâ be an homage to Varric? :D they have met
I also wanna point out that I was right on reading issue #1, when I said âMy guess is that the thing Tractus shows Marquette and Nenealeus is probably a chained up dragon or similarâ
the poor dragon :â( big dragon the Qunari had in Trespasser vibes
the sword has a really cool design, kind of reminds me of something a samurai might be depicted wielding
đ lore-drop! so ancient elven arcane warriors used lyrium-infused swords. this seems to confirm the sarcophagus is an ancient elven artifact, no? makes sense, wasnât it said that the sarcophagusâ design was based on the architecture/outfit-design type elements of a specific faction, and that this was done intentionally? it looks kinda ancient elfy in make, right? also about the lyrium-infused swords of the arcane warriors, well well well.. remember that the Evanuris and the ancient elves mined the bodies of Titans for lyrium, for power and to use as a resource. hereâs an example of that use
as I read through this portion I became increasingly concerned for my boy Shirallas.. we really are in it now arenât we đ
the Qunari are launching STRAIGHT-UP ROCKETS ohhhh
pretty âlightshowâ over the wall in the âLetâs hope the fortress is as secure as Danarius boastedâ panel hh
protective older brother Fenris, impish younger sister Vaea. love that dynamic, we love to see it. sheepish and exasperated Fenris is so cute
the Bone Pit dragon fight with Hawke and co reference!
I wonder how long the dragon has been captive here, and how Danarius/Tractus was able to capture it
lore-wise what are the implications here? when Fenrisâ ritual was being undertaken, the sword and the sarcophagus were bombarded with magic, fire spells. in this one they aim to have the dragon bombard it with fire-breathing. is it just fire that makes it work/powers it, or is there magic in dragonfire, in dragons? it reminds me of âYour heart beats with the old blood, as well. Where do you think it comes from? It sings of a time when dragons ruled the skies. A time before the Veil, before the mysteries were forgotten. Can you hear it?â
purple color for the dragonâs growling sounds/typeset is a great idea
lets.. goooo!!!!
Marquette is such a nerd. later on when he activates the sarcophagus he has mad scientist vibes
the dramatic reunion face-offs begin!! as the prophecy foretold!!!!1
true to form, Marius DOES have nothing to say ahahaha, even at this, his personal climax. maybe Marius dies in the next issue, but Tessa lives and gets to go back to Charter
these Venatori look almost Star Wars
Shirallas my boyy.. nooo... donât do it đ
ah ah ah! try casting magic with no ARMS
Francesca a beacon of blue light and goodness
the splash combat page is masterful. everyone playing a part, so much going on, everything happening at once. a thing that sticks out to me about it is Aaronâs outstretched hand and alarm as he watches Fran fallÂ
Autumn with her lil hackles raised
âThe Venatori have returnedâ dun dun dunn
goodbye Shirallas đđđ
the composition of the second to last page with triangle/diamond-shaped panels and the framing of dragon wings is awesome
the Dread Wolf rises, âthe Tevinter Imperium will rise againâ.. on-point on-point cohesion
there he is, the red wraith
Super Saiyan Shirallas
what a note to end an issue on
wow wow wow!!
and separate to the above, some speculation based on the cover of Issue 3: the piece of metal looks like a broken collar coming off Shirallas, like the one there was on the cover of Issue 2 coming off the dragon. also heâs all bulky now with draconic talons/claws (reminds me of in-world legends of Reavers who dug too deep of their own power after drinking dragon blood and whose bodies consequently began to manifest subtle reptilian traits actually). Iâll be interested to see what results of this allusion between Shirallas and the dragon!!
Breathe ~ the Doctor (part 3)
A/n: Sorry that Iâm fixating on this series I just? I love this idea a lot lol. Also, I know I posted this on the wrong account but it would literally be like an extra half hour of work to fix this and I am not in the MOOD so I hope yâall can forgive my idiocy lmao
Word Count: 9100+
MASTERLIST
"What are you laughing at?" Y/n demanded, his face going red at Rose's giggles which had not stopped since Y/n had walked in the room.
The blonde shook her head, thoroughly amused it seemed. "You've been around the Doctor too much!" She accused. "Since when do you wear white button up shirts? Long sleeves and collar and all."
Y/n seemed suddenly defensive. "I like it, and I made it my own. See, no jacket, and I roll my sleeves up! With a nice vest, I could pass as a business man at the end of the day, or a farmer, or whatever." He sighed, allowing himself a smile. "Everywhere we go is never we expect to be. How many times have you gone running about in something not fitting for the time we turn up at? No matter where we go, the Doctor always fits in. I thought maybe taking after him would do me some good." He shrugged. "Makes me feel more professional too."
Rose gave a short chuckle once more before letting a long breath out as she looped her arm with Y/n. Y/n didn't know what Casandra had done to their little group, but ever since the trio had parted in that hallway when Y/n had stayed behind with Chip, things had been very different between him, Rose, and the Doctor. Y/n and the Doctor had long since stopped correcting people when they were called a couple. The Doctor and Rose as well. Y/n and Rose though... they'd been friends so long. Two people teetering on an edge they both tried not to fall over, thinking the other person didn't care at all. Yet here they were, secretly in love with each other this whole time. What a pair of fools.
"Well you look good in it, I won't lie. Especially with the sleeves rolled up," Â Rose complimented.
Y/n looked at her, his face colored with amusement but also embarrassment at her kind words. "What is it with men wearing collared button ups, sleeves rolled up, that does it for so many people?"
Shrugging was as much of an answer as Y/n got from Rose, because just then the pair arrived back in the main controls room. Where they were within earshot of the Doctor. The man turned around when they entered, and stopped short when he saw Y/n. "Well you look..." Y/n blushed even harder and Rose looked between the two men before scoffing.
"Oh, you two. Tell him he looks nice Doctor, you look silly like that, not saying how you feel when everyone knows what you're thinking anyway."
The Doctor cleared his throat. "You look very nice, Y/n."
"Thank you, Doctor," Y/n replied.
Rose dropped his arm, moving further into the room to divert attention from the sudden awkwardness. It really didn't make sense. The Doctor had been romantically involved plenty of times, Y/n knew that for fact. Speaking of, Y/n had as well. The Doctor had even been married and had children. That had been ages though... perhaps he was rusty when it came to romance. Maybe it was just Y/n, who was far less experienced and completely clueless how to treat a situation where the rules were not as clear as the feelings they had for each other. They had all this energy, but no idea how to utilize it. Rose, as usual, was the one who seemed to be able to handle it. Perhaps it was that she'd been in several serious relationships, but she always directed that unspoken energy in the right direction, then let it go when it was time. She had perfect timing, actually. It was rather impressive.
"What about my outfit, Doctor? Do you think it'll do?" She asked casually.
As always, the Doctor took the opportunity to change the subject. Y/n wondered passively if things between them would have really gone anywhere without Rose. God, what would they do without her? "The late 1970's?" The Doctor thought aloud, returning Y/n's mind to what was happening now. "You'd be better off in a bin bag. Hold on, listen to this," he added in a rush to cover his rather rude comment.
Rock music began playing suddenly, and everyone's attention turned to that. "I've heard this before. My mum used to listen to it."
Rose looked at Y/n in surprise, but the Doctor knew what it meant to far too casually bring up people one had lost and not want it looked at further, so he was the one who continued the conversation to other things this time. "Ian Dury and the Blockheads," he said with a grin. "Number on in 1979! Your mum had a popular taste, Y/n."
At that Rose got rather bright, her smile so wide that you could hear it when she spoke. "You're a punk!" The Doctor began to sing, and Y/n joined him, both of them grinning at each other as they had their fun with the music. "You both are, I can't believe it. A pair of punks. You, Doctor, are specifically some old punk with a bit of rockabilly thrown in."
"Do you want to go see him?" The Doctor asked, enjoying the banter.
Leaning against one of the rails, Y/n watched the two in quiet amusement as he often did with them. They talked too much for Y/n to keep up with. He was usually at a slower pace than them, and he preferred to watch them go at it anyway. "How do you mean?" Rose asked. "In concert?"
"Well what else is the TARDIS for?" The Doctor pointed out. "Also, Y/n, don't just stand there. You need to be watching me I said, you have to learn what I'm doing and then I'll teach you why I'm doing it and what everything means. You learn by doing I know, but you have to watch first."
Y/n smirked. "Oh don't worry Doctor, I'm watching plenty."
"Oi!" The Doctor pointed a warning finger at Y/n, but his face was not angry as much as it was red like Y/n's had been before. "Behave, you."
"I think not," Y/n disregarded.
"I'm sorry are we ignoring the fact that we might go to a concert in the 1970's? How cool would that be Y/n? I bet your mum would love that."
Y/n darkened a bit. "No, my mum hated crowds. She did like the music though." It wasn't bitter, but thoughtful. The same tone the Doctor used when he talked about his old life, before the Time War. Rose had noticed how similar the men were becoming. More and more very day, and quickly too.
"You know, I can take you anywhere," the Doctor told Y/n. Anywhere in space, but also in time. In the past. We can watch all the greatest moments of history, no problem. We're not just here to fix the world, we could just learn to. Take an easy trip for once."
There was something Y/n had been wanting to see for ages. Ever since Rose had seen her dad, way back when he died and she held him. Back before the Doctor was this man who he was now. He knew he couldn't do it though. Not because he would try and save his parents - he had learned from Rose. No, he just didn't want the Doctor or Rose to see back then. He didn't want them to know. He had been curious though... For so long. He couldn't remember them much, and had forgotten their voices ages ago.
"I'd like a concert," Y/n answered. "What do you think, Rose?"
She gave a small smile, as if she'd seen Y/n's thoughts in that moment but was too polite to call him out. "Ian Durey and the Blockheads it is." The TARDIS jerked when the Doctor began to go, but that was usual. What was not usual, was when the Doctor took a hammer from under the desk and began to slam parts of the control panel with it. Needless to say, when they all landed Y/n was the first one out. He felt annoyed seeing that. Even... a little sick to his stomach. He didn't know why - he'd never been motion sick before. He thought best not to question it.
Not that he wasn't plenty distracted when he and the other two exited the TARDIS to realize they were absolutely not anywhere near a concert being set up in 1979. In fact, they were in-
"1879," the Doctor realized when they were faced with men on horses wearing red coats and cocking guns they pointed into the trio's faces. "Same difference." Y/n glared at him, but the Doctor only winked in response.
"You will explain your presence," one of the armed men demanded. "And the nakedness of this girl." Y/n smirked and as if sensing it, without looking over, Rose elbowed him. Now was not the time to be flaunting how right he had been to dress the way he had, and not the way he usually did.
When the Doctor spoke again, he had a Scottish accent on and Y/n's eyes widened in surprise. Since when could he do that? "Are we in Scotland?"
"How can you be ignorant of that?" The same man spoke again, seeming seconds away of shooting them all. Y/n wasn't concerned for himself... except he had no idea how to explain why the bullets wouldn't kill him. The more pressing matter was definitely the other two though.
The Doctor began to bullshit and Y/n felt his muscles tense. "Oh- I- I'm dazed and confused. I've been chasing this wee naked child over hill and over dale. My partner is usually the navigator, so I trust him to lead the way." The Doctor motioned to Y/n with a head tilt, then looked at Rose. "Isn't that right, you timorous beastie?" He seemed a little hesitant, and Y/n had the thought pass of how fast he'd have to move to cover both of them when the bullets began firing.
Rose only made it worst. "Och, aye. I've been... oot about aboot."
"Please stop," Y/n whispered, shaking his head. Y/n hadn't heard many Scottsmen speak, but after the Doctor's fairly believable go at it, her complete failure was even clear to him.
"Hoots, mon?" Rose tried again.
"No Y/n's right, seriously, stop," the Doctor followed up.
The man on the horse spoke again. "Will you identify yourself, sir?"
"I'm Doctor James McCrimmon from the township of Balamory," the Doctor answered, switching gears again immediately. "I have my credentials if I may?" He moved his hand toward his pocket, drawing out his psychic paper when given the go ahead. He flashed it at the man. "As you can see, a doctorate from the University of Edinburgh." He showed it around willingly, and Y/n felt quite proud of the Doctor's ability to pull off a lie. Not to those who knew him, but when it mattered at least. "I trained under Doctor Bell himself."
Suddenly a woman's voice rang out. "Let them approach."
The uniformed man hesitated. "I don't think that's wise, ma'am."
"Let them approach," the woman demanded again, this time with attitude.
Obviously he didn't want to, but the woman must have been the final say because he finally conceded with, "You will approach the carriage, and show all due deference."
So they approached. The carriage door opened and there sat an older woman who looked rather comfortable in the company of strangers. "Rose, Y/n," the Doctor began. "Might I introduce you to Her Majesty Queen Victoria, Empress of India and Defender of the Faith."
"Oh my god," Y/n whispered, eyes widening. Aliens were one thing, but someone so staple in their own history? That was what tripped Y/n up, out of all the things they'd seen. This was just too close to home. Too hard to separate and look at logically.
Rose handled it better. "Rose Tyler, ma'am," she greeted politely. "And... my apologies, for being so naked."
"I've had five daughters," the Queen dismissed. "It's nothing to me. Who's the young man on the other side of you now, who looks at me as if I've grown three heads?"
This time it was the Doctor who elbowed Y/n. "I-" Y/n cleared his throat. "Y/n, ma'am. Sorry."
She smiled, obviously enjoying herself. "No worries." Her eyes moved to the Doctor. "How about you, Doctor? Why don't you show me those credentials?" He did, handing them over. "Why didn't you say so immediately?" She seemed baffle,d and suddenly Y/n was nervous as to what she'd found. "It states clearly here that you've been appointed by the Lord Provost as my protector."
"Does it?" He looked at Y/n, who shrugged. "Yes he does," he continued, more confident. "Good. Good. Erm, then let me ask, why is Your Majesty travelling by road when there's a train all the way in Aberdeen?"
"A tree on the line," she answered smoothly.
"By accident?" The Doctor pressed.
Queen Victoria seemed to find that question tiresome. "I am the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Everything around me tends to be planned?"
"An assassination attempt?" The Doctor seemed to be trying to understand something that seemed trivial to Y/n, but he had long since learned to not question the Doctor.
"What seriously?" Rose seemed stunned, just as Y/n was gathering his senses, as if she'd taken it into her to give him a break. "There's people out to kill you?"
"I'm quite used to staring down the barrel of a gun," the Queen reassured, though it wasn't reassuring at all.
The man on the horse from earlier spoke again. "Sir Robert Macleish lives but ten miles hence. We've sent word ahead. He'll shelter us for tonight, then we can reach our destination in the morning."
"This Doctor and his... timorous beastie will come with us." There was humor in her eyes. "As well as the silent one." Y/n ducked his head in embarrassment. The guard, which seemed to be what the man on the horse was, accepted that and then got them all moving again. He made a comment about the coming of nightfall, and Y/n found himself pleasantly surprised when the Queen responded, "Indeed. And there are stories of wolves in these parts. Fanciful tales, intended to scare children, but good for the blood I think." She looked ahead. "Drive on."
They all began walking and Y/n felt himself get awkward with all the guards watching him and he moved closer to the Doctor, nearly reaching out to take the man's hand. And then a few guards gave him a look of startled disgust and Y/n remembered what time they were in and felt a pang in his chest. He had to pretend all over again. The Doctor and Rose could be together wherever they were - whenever - but Y/n had to restrain himself. He dropped behind at the thought, distracting the movement that had been him about to reach out as pushing hair out of his face. It didn't fool the guards who knew what he had been doing anyway, so Y/n dropped back behind the Doctor and Rose. They looked at him but he just looked away, swallowing his awkwardness.
They arrived toward evening. The Queen was helped out as the Master of the house approached. "Your Majesty," the man greeted, bowing deeply.
"Sir Robert," the Queen returned brightly. "My apologies for the emergency. And how is Lady Isobel?"
"She's..." And then he hesitated, and Y/n felt in his gut that same feeling he always got when he felt something was wrong. He found himself questioning whether the man's wife was sick, or something else entirely was going on. "Indisposed, I'm afraid. She's gone to Edinburgh for the season.." He hesitated again, and Y/n felt that same pang. This time he was quite sure something was wrong. "And she's taken the cook with her, the kitchens are barely stocked. I wouldn't blame Your Majesty if you wanted to ride on."
"Not at all," the Queen chuckled. "I've had quite enough carriage exercise, and this is charming, if rustic. It's my first visit to this house. My late husband spoke of it often, the Torchwood Estate."
At that Y/n jerked. "I'm sorry, the what Estate?" Everyone looked at him like he'd gone mad.
"Torchwood," Sir Robert answered. "It was my father's house." The Queen hadn't objected to Y/n cutting in, so the man continued. The way Y/n was looking at him, Sir Robert seemed to see that the man was thinking, and thinking was what he needed in that moment. "It's a very old house you see. Lots of dangers in the old wood. That's why my wife est you see. She's grown tired of the keep up and needed a break. Are you sure you don't want to continue?" The man looked directly into Y/n's eyes and Y/n felt his heart stop. What was he trying to tell him?
"Quite sure," Queen Victoria interrupted. "Now, shall we go inside?" Sir Robert fought a frown when he nodded, seeming to want to run away. The panic in his eyes was so clear to Y/n, he was shocked no one else could see it. Y/n couldn't interrupt the Queen again though - he'd already tested his boundary. They began to go in, Y/n's mind racing as he scanned the Estate, looking for something out of place.
Then his eyes landed on the staff. They were all bald, and staring at Y/n like they wanted to destroy him. The Doctor moved up next to Y/n. "What's wrong?"
"I don't know," Y/n responded. "Yet." Despite how he wanted to stop it, he had no reason other than his gut feeling. What was he to do but be wary if nothing else? So they went inside.
The group headed for a room with what looked to be a gigantic telescope. "And this," the Queen began. "I take it, is the famous endeavor."
"All my father's work," Sir Robert answered. "Built by his hand in his final years. It became something of an obsession. He spent his money on this, rather than caring for the house himself."
"I wish I'd met him, I like him." The Doctor was smiling and Y/n almost rolled his eyes. He'd know all about obsessions overtaking your personal life, wouldn't he? "The thing's beautiful, can I..." He motioned to the telescope.
"Help yourself," Sir Robert allowed.
Rose and the Doctor surged forward to inspect it, but Y/n hung back, slowly dawdling past the butlers who were standing too close to just be there for no reason. The others began to talk, but Y/n focused on them. "You guys follow your Master around a lot, don't you?"
The bald man in front responded. "How else are we to attend to his needs?"
Y/n shrugged. "I suppose that's fair, except didn't Sir Robert say that the kitchens were poorly staffed and understocked? Doesn't it make sense that you'd be cleaning such a large estate, or working in those kitchens which seem to need such work?"
Eyes locked hard, it seemed to be a contest to see who'd blink first. The man was obviously impressed when Y/n won, if still irritated in Y/n's pressing. "Are you disapproving of how I do my job?"
Shrugging casually, Y/n stepped past them finally. "Not my right to do so. That would be Sir Robert's right to say or not say."
"What about me now?" Sir Robert piped up.
"I was just saying that your staff hovering so much surprises me, since you were stating how the kitchens needed some help. I of course don't mean to offend or tell you how to run things, Sir Robert. I..." He hesitated, the lie coming to him too easily. "I come from a rather poor family. I don't know how things like this works, and it fascinates me."
Sir Robert was the only one who saw through the lie - other than Rose, who was paying attention closely now, cued into Y/n's habits that showed when he was suspicious about something. Sir Robert hesitated, as if considering using the excuse to dismiss the men, but then decided against it - that same fear flashing in his eyes again. "I like to have them around. With my wife gone, they keep me company."
Y/n nodded in understanding, but the two men locked eyes and Y/n knew immediately. There was something up here. It seemed too late though. He had no proof and if these men were dangerous enough to control Sir Robert so in his own house, they'd doomed themselves the second they walked in the door. Y/n had to be careful about this - especially because it seemed he's just placed a huge target on his back.
The Doctor spoke, shifting the subject. "It's a bit rubbish." Only then did they all remember the telescope. Even the Queen had been distracted, looking between Sir Robert and Y/n like she was picking up on the signals between the two men, but didn't know what they meant. "How many prisms has it got? Way too many!" The Doctor stood from where he'd been crouched to inspect the instrument before. "The magnification's over the top. That's a stupid kind of..." He turned to Rose. "Am I being rude again?"
"Yep," she confirmed, smiling.
"But it's pretty!" The Doctor continued. "Really, it's very pretty."
Y/n got distracted after that, his mind wandering as he ran through all the possibilities to try and figure out what was happening. He could talk to the Doctor later to get feedback, but he'd at least like to have some theories to throw out when the time came. They weren't aliens, surely. The Doctor seemed to be able to pick up on that sort of thing eventually. If that was the case, Y/n sure wouldn't know. What else could it be.
Someone nudged Y/n and he looked up to see Sir Robert of all people. He had reached out to touch Y/n. "You Doctor seems interested in children's stories and magic and the stars. How do you put up with him?" He was making a joke, but that's not why he had gotten Y/n's attention to tell it.
Smiling came easy. He knew Sir Robert had the answers and that he wanted to tell Y/n. All he could do for now was give hints, and that's all Y/n needed for now. "Stories, eh? I like those myself. What kind of stories."
"One about a wolf around these parts, like I told you about in the carriage," the Queen answered. The fact that Sir Roberts purposefully stayed quiet made Y/n listen more than it seemed he was supposed to. "His father and my husband were quite fond of it, and the Doctor asked him to tell it to us. I'd be lying if I said i wasn't curious myself, actually."
"It's said that-" Sir Roberts began.
"Excuse me, sir." the bald man from earlier interrupted, and when Y/n and Sir Roberts locked eyes again, Y/n looked over carefully, taking in the man, trying to pull secrets out with just a look. "Perhaps Her Majesty's party could go their rooms now. It's almost dark."
"Well that was rude," Y/n spoke up. Again all eyes were on him, and this time the Doctor and Y/n were picking up on the way Y/n and the bald man were glaring at each other, eyes locked. "The Master of the house was talking, and he was just about to tell us something very interesting. Even I wait until people are done talking, and I'm considered insolent." There was tangible tension in the room. Tension that seemed apparent only to those who could pick up on Y/n's small tells, and those who knew first hand that this was not as it appeared."
"Please forgive me, sir," the man apologized flatly. There was a threat in his voice, one that made Y/n go silent - especially when Sir Robert shot him a panicked look. "I only figured that you'd all want to rest before dinner."
Damn, that was a good excuse.
"What a lovely idea," the Queen gleefully spoke. "And some clothes for Miss Tyler, perhaps. Sir Robert, surely your wife left something behind?" The man nodded. "See to it. We shall dine at 7, and talk more of this.. wolf." At that the bald man simmered, and Y/n realized the connection. "After all, there is a full moon tonight."
Y/n's eyes widened. He had to hear this story... though, he didn't think he did have to actually.
The Doctor followed Y/n to his room. "This isn't where you'll be staying Doctor," one of the bald men said.
"I'll find it in a bit, just leave the door open. I need to find my friend." The man dressed as a butler hesitated, but couldn't find a good enough reason to stop this from happening, so he nodded and left. When the door closed behind them and they were safe from those outside, the Doctor rounded on Y/n. "What's going on in that head of yours?"
"The stories they mentioned earlier? They're true, and the men - the bald men - they're in one it. I don't think Sir Robert's wife is even gone off for some weather or old house, I think she's captured. Or dead." He shook his head. "I have no proof, only hunches and small noticings. But I'm telling you, Doctor. A wolf that only comes out on the full moon? The way the man interrupted Sir Robert from sharing the story. I think it's true, and I think it's coming after us tonight." It dawned on him then. "Or... after the Queen. No one else here alive is important, who should be here."
The Doctor considered all of this. "I believe you Y/n, I do. But we need proof, and that means we need to lay low and play innocent. You're brilliant, all you've gathered in such short time. I need you a bit longer before they try to kill you though and everything goes wrong. Do you trust me?" Y/n nodded immediately.
Rather unexpectedly, the Doctor grabbed Y/n's face and pulled him into a kiss then. He stepped backward, pressing his back to the door. Y/n kissed him back instantly, leaning into him. He hesitated, but when the Doctor kept kissing him, he found himself unable to help himself getting lost in it. His fingers threaded into the Doctor's hair and pulled their bodies closer. The Doctor's hands wandered, pulling and tugging on Y/n's shirt.
Just as quickly as it began, the kiss stopped and the Doctor was pushing him away. "Alright." The his voice was a little lower, his eyes blown just a bit. "I've been wanting to do that all day."
Y/n scoffed. "You snogged me like that to, what, blow off steam?"
The Doctor bit his lip, shaking his head before orienting his thoughts again. "I needed a reason to be in here that wouldn't incriminate us. They can suspect you know something, so you keep the attention on you. You're the diversion. While they're worried about you finding out, I'll poke around and see what I can find. They won't expect me because-"
"They'll only think you came in here to snog me," Y/n realized.
"Not a thing you can fake, the results of that. It leaves a nice touch, the blown out eyes and the... the lips." Y/n realized that the Doctor's lips were a little bit more red than usual. "Anyway, pleasure and business mix every once in a while - grand time when it does. See you at dinner."
Y/n rested his forehead on the door when the Doctor left.
What in the world was he going to do with this man?
The smile hadn't left his face when he sat down for dinner, and despite him straightening his shirt, there was still a heat to his face. The Doctor wasn't much better. The affects were missed by everyone who wasn't paying attention, but were picked up by the ones that mattered. The butlers who obviously were not butlers. And the Doctor's planned seemed to work. They immediately dismissed the Doctor and focused their attention on Y/n. He was probably in danger... not that he could die, which would hopefully be the worst thing that could happen tonight.
The man who seemed to be in charge of the bald men stepped forward, speaking as he had when he'd challenged Y/n earlier and lost. "Your companion begs an apology. Her clothing has somewhat delayed her." Y/n's heart stopped. His grip on the table turned his knuckles white.
By some miracle, the Doctor seemed as if he had no worries at all. "Oh, that's alright. Save her a wee bit of ham." Y/n's mind was racing again, his eyes focusing on Sir Robert. The man seemed to be apologetic, but not too sorrowful. Y/n was picking up on the man's emotions quickly as he watched him more and more. He only hoped he was right. Either way, it really didn't matter. Either Rose was trapped and they had time to work this out and save her, or... she was too far past saving to take risks anyway. And if Y/n left this room, he'd be doing it alone, and that would put him in line next to be carted away. The Doctor needed some help at the very least.
"Besides, we're all waiting on Sir Robert!" the Doctor exclaimed, breaking the men out of their stare and grabbing their attention again. "You promised us a tale of nightmares."
"Indeed," Victoria agreed. "Since my husband's death I find myself with more of a taste for supernatural fiction."
"You must miss him," the Doctor vocalized. It was then that Y/n thought back to the first time the Doctor lost someone. His own wife, even. The mother of his children... If anyone understood, it would be him. The Doctor understood loss better than anyone.
As if seeing that understanding in the man across from her, the Queen allowed herself a moment to be vulnerable. It was a very Y/n thing to do. Perhaps... Y/n was influencing the Doctor, the same way the Doctor was influencing Y/n. "Oh, completely." She paused, the air in the room growing heavy with emotion. "And that's the charm of a ghost story, isn't it? Not the scares and chills, that's just for children, but the hope pf some contact with the great beyond. We all want some message from that place. It's the Creator's greatest mystery that we're allowed no such consolation." Her eyes became far away and Y/n looked at his hands. What would he have left behind if he'd never become immortal? What would people leave behind with him, when their time came? That thought. The thought of realizing yet again that he was going to lose one person after the other forever... except the Doctor. They were all the other had left now. The only person they each had a chance of keeping forever. "The dead stay silent, and we must wait." Her voice grew small, and then she shook her head and switched gears to being chipper once more. "Come, begin your tale, Sir Robert. There's a chill in the air. The wind is howling. Tell us of monsters."
Under the table, Y/n let his knuckles rub against the Doctor's hand softly. In response, the brunette man turned his palm upward, allowing Y/n to interlace their fingers. Both relaxed.
"The story goes back three hundred years," Sir Robert began. "Every full moon the howling rings through the valley. Next morning, live stock is found ripped apart and d-" he cut off, that same terrified look crossing his face. "Devoured." Y/n felt his leg twitch.
The head of the guard laughed off the spook in the air by saying, "Oh, tales like this just disguise the work of thieves. Steal a sheep and blame a wolf - simple as that."
Robert was having none of that. "But sometimes a child goes missing," he insisted, pushing it to try and drive his point home. It seemed to be written off as dramatics by everyone else in the room. Everyone except Y/n who was listening intently, and the Doctor, who Y/n knew was listening even though he gave no note of it. "Once in a generation, a boy will vanish from his homestead.
Y/n knew the man holding his hand had questions, but if they were going the route of keeping attention on Y/n, Y/n had to be the one to ask. "Is there anything that tells what this thing looks like?"
"Drawings and wood carvings," Sir Robert affirmed. "And it's not merely a wolf, it's more than that. This is a man who becomes a wolf." He drove each word at Y/n, saying much more than just a story. What had he seen? Risked, to tell Y/n this?
"A werewolf," Y/n voiced, resting his elbows on the table.
"What a neat little story." The Doctor was smiling, shaking his head in the same way the head of the guard was.
"My father didn't treat it as a story," Sir Robert said, but his interest was as invested in convincing the Doctor as the bald men were worried he was someone to worry about. The plan was working, at least. "He said it was fact. He even claimed to have communed with the beast, to have learned its purpose. I should have listened."
The bald man began to move and Y/n went into protective mode. "Of course, it was your father's passion. I'm sure you miss him and wished to have listened more. Engaged with him." Sir Robert half halfheartedly nodded.
"The thing was, his work was hindered. He made enemies." This time Sir Robert focused on Y/n purposefully, eyes boring into Y/n's very soul. "There's a monastery in the Glen of St Catherine. The Brethren opposed my father's investigations."
"Perhaps they thought his work ungodly," the Queen suggested. That was when it clicked for Y/n, his eyes wandering to the bald men. The men who were monks, and who were also mumbling incoherently nonsense in a  foreign language that set Y/n's hair standing up.
"That's what I thought," Sir Robert agreed. "But now I wonder. What if they had a different reason for wanting to keep the story quiet? What if they turned from God and worshiped the wolf?"
"I think..." Y/n drawled, his hand tightening around the Doctor's. "It's time to make a new plan, Doctor. I don't think its going to do any good to play nice."
The Doctor's eyes widened. "Right." He turned around rather sharply, dropping Y/n's hand in favor of moving to his feet. They weren't getting any more information now - they had to find Rose. Chaos broke out, the Queen and the head guard trying to figure out why the Doctor and Y/n were so upset, Sir Robert apologizing because they had his wife, and the Doctor demanding to know where Rose was. There sat Y/n in the middle of it all, trying to be more productive than the confusion and the guilt and the yelling at people who were not going to respond.
"Doctor!" Y/n called, trying to knock sense into him.
The man looked over and he took a deep breath in. "Sir Robert, come on!" The three men took off down the hall. Sir Robert lead the other two to the basement, where a bunch of people were chained up and trying to pull to freedom as a werewolf grew to a dangerous form not even five feet from them.
Rose was so amazing, lord.
"Where have you been?" The blonde demanded.
"I missed you too," Y/n shot back. The joke didn't last long though, because soon they were all distracted by everyone scattering in a grab for freedom. All the women but Rose were rushed to the kitchens and the men all  but Y/n and the Doctor were armed. There was a noise and the Doctor dipped from the room for a moment only to come bolting back, grabbing Rose's hand. She grabbed Y/n's and the train pull got them all out of the room and stay together at the same time. They made it just behind the line of guns just in time for the weapons to go off as the wolf itself turned around the corner in full force.
The Doctor took charge when the thing bolted from the bullets. "All right, you men, we should retreat upstairs. Come with me."
"I'll not retreat," the ground's keeper insisted. "The battle's done. There's no creature on God's earth could survive such an assault."
"You think not?" Y/n demanded, in no mood for people to act afool. He snagged a gun from one of the men, thrusting the thing into the Doctor's hand guiding the end of the barrel to his throat. "Shoot me please, Doctor." Without hesitation, the Doctor obeyed, knowing Y/n would be okay in a few seconds. There were some startled screams and a moment of darkness as Y/n passed out only a few seconds, but then he awoke and men stood around him, stunned. "Like I said," Y/n grumbled as he stood up again. "You think not? That's what I thought, listen to the Doctor now."
Soon they were all heading their way upstairs, just in time for the halls behind them to echo with the thing's roar. "Well at least you're alive," the Doctor reminded as the ground keeper's face grew ashen pale. They ran up, Sir Robert calling the Queen. She was running down the stairs to greet them.
"What's going on?" The older woman demanded. "I heard such horrible noises."
"Ma'am, we've got to get out," Sir Robert urged. "But what of Father Angelo, is he still here?"
The woman hesitated then responded, "Captain Reynolds disposed of him." Sure.
The Doctor, who'd left the room to check the front door, returned just then to deliver only bad news. "The front door is boarded shut. Pardon me, Your Majesty, you'll have to leg it out a window." The group moved to a window, only to get shot at and have it quickly proven that windows were as much not an options as the sealed door was.
"I reckon the monkey-boys want us to stay inside," the Doctor sighed.
"Do they know who I am?" the Queen demanded.
"Yeah," Rose answered. "That's why they want you. The wolf's got you lined up for a... a biting."
The Queen was not having that. "Now stop this talk. Â There can't be an actual wolf." Just then a howl broke through the house and Y/n had to bite back a laugh.
In the end, believing or not, they all took off running (after some snarky banter, but that was usual) and were all barely saved as they turned the corner and the wolf almost took them over, just in time for that head guard who Y/n realized he did not know the name of. The man tried to stay behind to give the others time to retreat, but now it was Y/n's turn not to tolerate nonsense.
"Now you listen to me," Y/n snapped with such authority that even the Queen didn't speak and payed attention. "I don't care who you are or what you've done or believe. I've got you all alive this far, and I've got plenty of witnesses that says I will do much better than you will facing down something that will absolutely kill you. Y/n ripped the gun from the man's hand. "Now go!"
"Why are you always staying behind?" Rose demanded, visibly stressed. "Just because you come back to life doesn't mean it won't hurt when that thing slices you up."
Y/n sighed. "It's my shtick, Rose, haven't you realized yet? I'm not good in stress anyway, I'm good for sacrificing myself and dealing with pain and doing the worst bits. You two are the brains, and you'll need as many hands as possible. Go."
"But-" Rose began.
"GO!" Y/n interrupted. "We can talk later."
Rose didn't listen at first. Instead she popped up on her tippy toes and caught Y/n's lips in hers. "You're an amazing man, Y/n." Y/n smiled and they finally all went, leaving Y/n behind like always to face the biggest problem on his own. It only made sense that he'd been given immortality. He was meant for this role. What he'd said had been truth, and everyone knew it. Y/n was the one who took the hardest hits because he could stand them better than anyone else. He was perhaps the only one who could stand them at all. Rose was right too, it didn't stop it from hurting, but he'd rather someone not die to spare him a bit of aching.
Everyone made it into the room, but Rose lingered, and that was why she was the one who got to watch Y/n get ripped apart. The last thing Y/n saw before the world went black and his bones snapped like twigs was the Doctor pulling Rose into the room so Y/n was out of sight.
When Y/n awoke again, he was too afraid to move in case it reawakened the memories of the last time his body had moved. When it had broken and snapped and caved in and his existence had become pain and loss. He just lay there, breathing, alone and cold in the silent darkness. He expected some kind of soreness or stiffness, but neither bothered him. His body was completely healed as if it had never once had anything wrong with it ever.
It was only when he heard a scream that he made his way to his feet, running after it to see what was wrong. As if on cue, there was Sir Robert standing with an ax or a sword or something, facing down that stupid beast. "Okay," Y/n growled, walking up. Sir Robert's eyes went wide. "Yes, I'm still alive. Now get into those doors you idiot, dying for a cause is my job!"
Sir Robert looked at Y/n, reaching out a hand to rest on his shoulder. "There is more to life than dying to protect everyone else, Y/n. You're brave, and amazing, but don't take this from me. I need to atone. I need to-" A roar echoed and the two men turned to see the wolf. Y/n stepped forward, screaming back. The wolf saw Y/n and froze, stunned.Y/n could practically see the thing recalling the memory of killing the man who stood before him now, completely fine.
"You think you will fear nothing," Y/n snarled, hunched over with his lip curled back. He looked quite wolfish himself, and the actual roof in the hallway seemed to take a step back. "Get back. GET BACK!" And by some insanity, the thing obeyed. "You're right, Robert. There is more to life than dying for a cause. You have a wife who cares about you, and I have watched far too many people die. Let me make a difference. Let me be the one who saves lives for once. Please, go inside." Sir Robert hesitated then nodded, stepping away from the door and into the adjacent hallway, out of range of the beast. There was a moment's pause where no one was sure what to do. Then the door behind Y/n opened and a hand wrapped around his arm and he was yanked back. The beast ran after him, whatever spell broken, and then-
Light.
So much light.
Y/n ended up on the ground, curled in a ball away from the light. He was so tired. He didn't ever want to move from that spot. Perhaps he could not negotiate never, but he could claim now. So he closed his eyes and did not move for a very long time. Because he was allowed that, I think. And so did everyone else.
-
When Y/n did move again, it was only to walk out of the estate and across the land they'd crossed what seemed ages ago to make his way back to the TARDIS, leaving the wrapping up to the Doctor and Rose.
He had a long time to himself in the quiet. A very long time. Far too long a time. He leaned against the control panel, hands flat on the controls, eyebrows knit together.
Finally, he spoke.
"I know you gave me his memories," Y/n told the control panel. "I know you were there when Rose was using your power. I felt you. Heard your voice. You told me his story. One that wasn't yours to tell. And now I know his life - his entire life, as if I lived it myself - and I have memories that aren't mine. That don't belong to me. How am I supposed to tell him that? How would I ever expect him to be okay with me knowing EVERYTHING? His life is clearer to me than my own." Y/n sighed, rubbing his face. "I can't die, but I can save people. I can lessen the burden he carries on his shoulders. The way he remembers each and every death and it hurts him. I took that upon myself, you know. And the wait of it all. The weight he must have, knowing that he can save one life and strand me and Rose here, or that he won't be able to save anyone's life ever again.
"Not to mention, he can die! He only regenerates when he's in the process of dying. If someone kills him before he regenerates, that's it. It's over. No more Doctor. For the first time maybe ever, it's not him who had to be afraid of losing someone because they might not live as long as him." Y/n sighed, feeling his heart fall slowly into his stomach. "Not to mention... I'm going to have to say goodbye to Rose someday, aren't I?" He looked up at the TARDIS around him, tears coming to his eyes. "How am I ever going to say goodbye to her now that we...?" His head fell forward as he sighed. After a second his hands tightened into fists as he stared at the floor under his feet. His gaze hardened. "I won't, you hear me? Not for a long time. A REALLY long time. We have so much time left together. She won't die or leave us. Not unless by choice, and I don't think she would leave if given the option. I'm going to protect her. You hear me?" He pushed off the panel, standing tall. "I don't care if I have to die every time we go out. I'm going to protect everyone."
It was a vow he would learn to regret.
-
The TARDIS door opened with two very nervous people entering the box that was bigger on the inside, expecting to see a very upset Y/n. Instead, they were greeted by a wide, brilliant smile and sparkling eyes as the man that had left in the middle of the night and spent all that time alone because Rose and the Doctor had to wrap things up with the Queen, leaned against the control panel like he knew they'd been about to enter. "You guys ready to go?"
Rose was the first one to answer. She wasn't smiling. "Y/n?"
The man turned away from her, beginning to distract himself by running his hands along the switches and buttons he wasn't completely familiar with yet. "That's my name. Where do you want to go this time, Rose? I'm sure you'd be a better person to give suggestions, Doctor, but I could shoot some ideas through history if we wanted to stay on Earth."
There was a moment of quiet where the Doctor and Rose had a silent argument before they stopped just in time for Y/n to finally turn around. "Y/n can we talk?" Rose asked gently, her smile small and soft.
Instantly Y/n was shot with terror. "Uh-" He looked at the TARDIS wall, trying to let the light make the horrible feeling in his chest go away. Had they finally decided he was useless and more a burden than anything and wanted him to go home? Was he too reckless and had upset them? Was he getting annoying, wanting to learn how to drive the TARDIS? Had he been rushing things by trying to be with both of them? Had... had they learned that they liked being together and not with him? "Talk about what?" Y/n finally asked, his gaze finally moving from the wall as he turned his back to them, trying to memorize the TARDIS so that he'd remember her as long as possible when he was gone.
Arms suddenly wrapped around his waist, looping under his arms. A face pressed to his back. He tensed, unsure of what was happening. "I love you."
Y/n was stunned. "I love you too, Rose." Her arms loosened, allowing Y/n to turn around to face, her, unsure of what was on her mind. "But?"
"But nothing," the blonde assured. "You just need to understand... losing you is terrible. And I know that you don't stay dead when you die, but- before you were immortal you were bad enough, but now you don't even try to stay alive anymore. It's really got me worried."
This was even more confusing. "I can't die, Rose."
"Do you want to?" That was the Doctor, and when Y/n looked at him, there was a look in his eyes that made Y/n feel terrible. This man had watched his whole planet and everyone he cared about die. After that, he had lost every friend and sometimes even more. The way he looked at Y/n now was not necessarily fear, because he didn't have to worry about Y/n dying. It was exhaustion. It was the face of a man who was tired watching his loved ones die.
"Of course I don't," Y/n answered honestly. Dying sucked. He hadn't had much experience with the process - the worst he'd had was last night when he'd felt his body shatter and then woken up perfectly fine and in one piece, with the memory still clear in his head. He'd felt insane, which had never happened before. None of his experiences dying had been good, and last night had shown him just how terrible it could be. It had also made him wonder... how far did this go? Could he be vaporized and still return completely fine, or if he was reduced to ashes, would he stay dead? Honestly, he didn't want to find out. Vaporizing looked painful and he didn't want that in his head. Not like he had the feeling of teeth ripping his chest and stomach into shreds ingrained in his brain with a clarity that still had him unsettled.
The Doctor pursed his lips. "Why did you?"
Y/n scoffed. "What, you're mad that I died when I did it to save all those people, knowing I would come back?"
That seemed to bother both of them. "We both watched you die last night, Y/n. In really unpleasant ways," Rose said softly, her hand stroking his chest comfortingly, as if to calm him down. He would be lying if he said it didn't work even a little. "You had the Doctor shoot you for goodness sake."
"He did it," Y/n reasoned weakly. "I-" He swallowed. "I didn't think it bothered you. I came back."
"I thought so too," the Doctor agreed. "That's why I did it." There was a short pause where the two men looked at each other, and Y/n was suddenly glad he could only see the Doctor's past feelings and thoughts, and not what was going through the Timelord's head now. "Then I watched you bleed out on that floor, and it was very real and you were very dead, and I have that memory now." He shrugged, obviously as uncomfortable with the conversation as Y/n was.
Y/n wondered absently how long Rose had taken to talk him into doing this at all.
"I'm going to be okay," Y/n reassured.
Something odd happened then. They were still looking at each other when they were hit by the same memory, almost watching it be recalled in the other person's mind. Somehow, that made it even harder to bare.
"I'm going to be okay, Dad, don't worry."
There was terror in every part of my... his body. I knew it more clearly than ever now, even though I also knew that I was seeing it from his eyes. The last time he was a dad with his kid. I was seeing it from his eyes so I knew that it was... both of our bodies, I guess. Just for a moment. For that memory, I allowed myself to make it personal. I allowed myself to become the Doctor, staring at his kid and hoping with ever fiber in his being that they would see each other again when it came time.
"We both will be." The woman smiled, hand reaching out to touch... my face. Her smile was warm and soft and compassionate. The same fear coursing through me, reflected in her eyes. They'd already lost so much. How much more could they all handle?
Y/n looked away, but he didn't miss the bewildered expression on the Doctor's face. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "I just... want to be useful, I guess."
Rose's hands gripped Y/n's face, forcing the man to look at her when she spoke to him. "You don't need to be useful, Y/n. You are, don't get me wrong, but that's not why you're here. You're here because you're apart of us, and we care about you, and that is plenty enough. You're here because you chose to be here and then kept choosing to be here despite everything. THAT is the only reason you're here, do you understand me?" After a second, Y/n nodded. "I know you feel obligated to save people, just... please, you're important too. Even if you come back, it's going to start taking its toll on you eventually. Remember that."
Y/n allowed himself to relax into her touch. He looked into her eyes and saw the woman he never met. The care in her eyes matched Rose's, as much as the determination and care. They didn't really look alike, but their love was the same, as it was the same for everyone who felt it - one way or another. "Okay." He smiled, and Rose relaxed. "Is this you asking me not to die?"
Rose chuckled, shaking her head. "I never thought I'd have to ask that of you honestly." She shook her head, her hands dropping. "But no. Just... care about yourself as much as you care about other people. You're important too. That's all I'm asking. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should."
That was fair.
"Now," the Doctor said, drawing the attention of the other two. "We have adventuring to do. Any suggestions?" Rose and Y/n parted so Y/n could join the Doctor at the control panel. Rose leaned against the wall across from them, crossing her arms and smiling. She looked at lot happier now. Y/n realized she'd probably been terrified of seeing Y/n die again, carrying a weight with that fear that had drug her down enough that now, she felt light enough to have a bounce in her step. She recognized that it was going to happen again, but at the very least it wouldn't happen often, like it had been.
"You pick," Y/n sighed. "I think you deserve a turn."
The Doctor's face began to light up with a smile. "So be it."
@enduringlystoic â Elijah is a curiosity. Heâs a powerful point of contact in New Orleans. He is someone she understands she canât overpower, but he is also (to her knowledge) not terrible enough to actively oppose, so she prefers him as an ally. She likes having someone to talk to whenever she needs to pop through his city, and she also quietly enjoys the umbrella of protection and clout being in his good graces affords her. This is also a source of frustration, though, because she dislikes being the weaker half of a power dynamic. She canât fully trust him, is wary of the compulsion ability and his status as undead (since sheâs been taught the pursuit of eternal life is Major Bad), but they generally have been getting along. He doesnât oppose her interests (except in the beginning) and just seems intrigued by the commotion she stirs up when sheâs in town. Small doses of friendship work for them. She probably comes through for a few weeks at a time at most and then disappears. Since this is between college and pre-season 2 Elektra, sheâs much easier to get along with and not take things so seriously.
@devilmasked â Matt is her first and only love (so far), the love of her life, the man she canât get out from under her skin. Heâs steadiness when sheâs unstable, a rock during identity crises, a voice of light and reason when all she can see is darkness and myth. Heâs also a button she loves to press. Matt was the happiest year of her life. Especially in the comics, Matt is a touchstone of who she used to be. Because sheâs changed and he hasnât, because she died, itâs why he can move on and fall in love with other people and she canât (or has not as of yet). Love like this sometimes feels like destiny, sometimes like an incurable disease, and sometimes like a cage she wants to escape. Especially in the show, she craves his validation, and because she resents herself for wanting that, she resents him too. He is hope she can be âbetterâ and a hard reminder why she canât, because they disagree on what improves the world. Matt saw her as a person when everyone else has only ever wanted her for what she could give them. She trusts him implicitly and whether theyâre a team or on opposite sides, there is a deep, foundational bedrock of understanding between them that will never change. Thereâs always a form of love even if they arenât together romantically.
@dearlybelovad â Yelena is new. Sheâs a lack of judgement, a competent and skilled mission partner, and a repeated nudge towards the fun side of life again. A sunshine to my grump. Sheâs obviously charming and has a Grade A meter for seeing through a defensive wall of bullshit and the moat of snapping alligators protecting Elektraâs heart. Since Elektra is so similar to Natasha, Yelena already has experience with a person like her. She gets the warrior mentality, the years of servitude to a cause, and the trauma from a lack of agency via brainwashing. Sheâs not someone Elektra can ignore, especially because of that mutual experience/understanding. Yelena is refreshing. She provides/provided Elektra with a noble cause to back. The results of freeing other women from what theyâve gone through is rewarding, it makes her feel good. Sheâs also a guidepost on how to deal with the practical fallout of being someone with their skillset and history, with newly found true freedom. Yelena has dealt with this very differently than Elektra, and itâs good for her to see thereâs still a way to enjoy life after so much pain and so many years stolen. Obviously this has a limitation where they differ (death, somewhat voluntarily being an operative on Elektraâs side), but overall Yelena seems like an aid of healing in the long run for Elektra. She could also be a detriment, depending on who you ask, if Elektra ends up seeing the practicality in being an assassin for hire like Yelena and decides to go that route.
Red Pt 1 - Tsukishima Kei
AU: Soulmate - Red String of FateÂ
Revamp
Tags/Warning: FEM! Reader, a little angsty...so...take what you will from that, revamp (previously requested)Â
Word Count: 3k+
The red string of fate connects people beyond the bonds of friendship and love. Itâs destiny.Â
The red string of fate means having a best friend and love for life.Â
The red string of fate is unbreakable.
Before
For as long as you could remember, happiness had filled your life.
You and Tsukishima were lucky enough to have found each other at a young age. The red string burst to life when you walked into the same classroom as him during kindergarten. The bright red light had filled the room and then shrunk until a thin line formed and tightly coiled around your left ring finger, connecting you and a blond boy with glasses. Â
Everyone was shocked. Most people didnât meet their soulmate until much later in life.Â
Since then the two of you had been inseparable, best friends for life. And, hopefully, you wished, something more in the future. All the signs pointed to that.Â
The sun had already set and the streets were dark. You were lying on the floor of Tsukishimaâs bedroom. You glared over at his back that was hunched over his desk. Homework had piled up on him. Both volleyball and being a third-year had taken a toll.Â
However, that didnât stop you from going over to his house and eating his food. That added to the list of many things that you loved about him. Another one would be Tsukishima let you do almost anything in the world and wouldnât care. He was always on your side of the argument and you were on his. You could kill a person and he would help you hide the body, no questions asked.Â
But the one thing he didnât stand for was the disturbance of his dinosaur collection (one that you practically put together). Â
âAlmost done?â you asked.Â
You sat up and stretched out your arms. Standing up, you made your way towards him. You placed both of your hands on his shoulders and rested your chin on his head, closing your eyes.Â
He hummed in response but his eyes never left the math problem in front of him.Â
âDo you need help?âÂ
âNo, I donât need your help. Iâm just tired,â he said lamely.Â
âYou say that, but the faster you get it done the sooner you get to sleep. Thereâs nothing wrong to want help.âÂ
His head whipped towards you. Dark circles hung from under his eyes. He wasnât sleeping well and you knew it, but he waved you off when you gave him suggestions. Trying to help Tsukishima when he didnât want it was like convincing a lizard that itâs a rock, pointless. But you always tried.
âGo away.â Â
You laughed nervously, but backed away from him, giving him space. You walked over to your bag and went through it. Your school bag has always been a mess. Maybe sorting it now would keep your mind busy while you waited for Tsukishima to finish. âI think I left my pencil at school.âÂ
Tsukishima spun around on his chair and glared at you. He never looked at you like that before. The glare that he reserved for strangers that wanted something from him.Â
âGo find it then. I didnât ask you to be here.âÂ
You opened your mouth to say something, but nothing came out. Words that usually came so easily to you, died in your throat. You quickly packed up your stuff and threw your bag over your shoulder. âFine.â
You turned to leave and saw the regret slowly grow on his face.Â
Tsukishima sighed and stood up. âWait. (Y/N)ââ
You closed the door behind you. Â
âDamn it!â Tsukishima shouted. He could hear the sound of the door closing echo in his brain.Â
He choked back a cough. Something felt wrong.Â
Anger flooded through him. Why was he feeling his way? What was happening? He ran his fingers through his hair and clenched tightly onto the strands, pulling at it slightly. The two of you had fought before and this one wasnât even the worst. But it didnât feel right this time.Â
The dinosaurs that (Y/N) had gotten him mocked him. They looked at him with fake eyes and plastered smiles.
He opened his closet door, stormed to his bed, and grabbed the first stuffed dinosaur he could find. (Y/N) had given them to him as a joke for his fifteenth birthday, but he really looked forward to each new one.Â
But now? Â
He was satisfied with the thump sound he heard when he threw it into his closet. It felt almost therapeutic when he slammed the closet door shut and locked it. Â
Tsukishimaâs breath was heavy. All the satisfaction suddenly left him like ice melting in the sun.
Sleep did not reach him that night. He just stared at the plain white sheets that covered his bed wishing that someone was still with him.Â
Sleep didnât find you either. Heâd never spoken to you like that and whenever you closed your eyes all you could see was the look on Tsukishimaâs face and the sound of spite in his voice. You felt a strong tug in your stomach when you thought about it.Â
But when your heavy eyelids did shut, you dreamt of nothing.Â
When you woke up, something felt off.Â
The morning light hit your eyes the same way, but the world seemed different. You raised your hand to your face to see the string, a habit you couldnât shake, not even in anger. As always, the red string was there, tied to your finger, trailing off a meter in front of you and faded out. You never knew how far it could stretch, but you always knew that Tsukishima was on the other end.Â
You sat up quickly when a shock crawled up your arm. Â
The once vibrant red of the string was gone and replaced with a dull one.
The next day at school was worse. The light and happy atmosphere around the two of you changed. It seemed as if the entire school noticed. You could hear the whispered conversations and hushed tones when you walked into school alone and even more when Tsukishima switched desks with Yamaguchi for the day to avoid you.Â
That one hurt the most.Â
Every spare moment you got, you worked up every last bit of courage you could find within yourself and tried to talk to him. It was only a fight. Everybody fought. You werenât going to let it get in the way. You and Tsukishima were soulmates. You were forever. Though, it seemed as if Tsukishima had worked up every last bit of himself into avoiding you. If he saw you coming, heâd turn in the opposite direction.Â
The pit in your stomach only grew throughout the day. Youâve never gone a day without speaking to him. Up until now, you havenât noticed how much of your life included him, especially at school. You never made many friends inside of school because all you ever knew was life with Tsukishima by your side.Â
The last time you tried that day was during lunch. You walked up to the usual spot, under the trees in the field, but Tsukishima wasnât alone. It looked like he invited the entire volleyball team to sit with him. He sat beside Yamaguchi who said something to make him smile.Â
You looked down at your hand and flexed your fingers. You were close enough to each other that you could see the end of the string and where it looped around Tsukishimaâs finger instead of fading because of distance. But you never felt further away from him. Maybe if you tugged on it he would notice you.Â
Trembling, your hand dropped to your side and you walked away. Â
For the first time, in a long time, you ate lunch alone.Â
After
You paced on the pouch of Tsukishimaâs house.Â
The silent treatment and avoidance had lasted the entire week and you were sick of it.Â
This was total bullshit.Â
Every day you tried to talk to him and every day you got nothing in return.Â
Your hand hovered in front of the door, ready to knock some sense into him. Then the little whispers in your brain told you to give it a little time and your hand fell. You frowned and raised your hand again. He had enough time to act like a child.Â
The door opened before you had a chance to knock. Tsukishima towered over you and didnât meet your eyes. His clothes were a little dishevelled and his hair stuck out at odd ends. At least you werenât the only one having a hard time.Â
âDid you need something?â he asked. Tsukishima sounded tired. Was he still not sleeping well?Â
âHow did you know I was out here?â you said.Â
He tsked and looked down, taking a sudden interest in his slippers. âI had a feeling.â
You bit your lip and looked up to the porch light, trying to will your tears to not fall. Great, you thought, barely a word out and I already feel like shit. âWow. You canât even look at me?âÂ
âDid you need something, (Y/N)?â he repeated.  Â
âWhy are you avoiding me?â you snapped.Â
âIâm not avoiding you.â
You scoffed and rolled your eyes. âWell, we both know thatâs a lie. Does lying come easily to you now, too? Does it join the categories of avoidance and jackassery? It definitely doesnât fall in the same place as being a good soulmateâor even a good friend.âÂ
He flinched. And you felt yourself flinching too.Â
âI donât know what you want me to say,â he whispered.Â
âI donât care what you say!â It was louder than what you meant it to be, but you didnât have it in you to stop. âAt least talk to me, say something, anything. Did something happen? Did you do something? Did I do something? Give me a reason. Something. We are fated to be together. Youâre going to have to talk to me eventually.âÂ
âDoââ he started, and then bit his tongue back as if he didnât want to say it. âDonât you ever feel like this was forced?âÂ
You took a step back. âWhat?âÂ
He let out a breath and rubbed his eyes. âIâve been thinking about it a lot since our fight. We only became friends because of thisâ â he held up his hand and tugged at the stringâ âdoesnât it seem forced to you? Like someone took your choice away? One you didnât even know you had?âÂ
Took something away? You choked back a cry. This string had only given things to you.Â
âAre you saying that you don't want me as your soulmate? That Iâm something that you're stuck with?â Â
He didnât answer.Â
âWhatâs happening?â you sputtered, running your hands up to your hair. âI donât understand. This is the way the universe works. This is how things are meant to be.âÂ
He paused and raised his head. He stared at you steadily, nothing in his eyes. âSometimes even fate and destiny isnât meant to be (Y/N).âÂ
You stared at him. How could he be so indifferent about this? There were stories about people begging and crying about never finding their soulmate. How could he throw it away?Â
Turning your back, you carried yourself high as you walked away. He didnât deserve you. He didnât deserve your friendship. He didnât deserve to see your tears fall.Â
As you turned a corner, you felt a strong snap and bent over as pain shattered through your body.Â
Your hand burned.Â
The string around your finger, the one that shaped your entire life, turned white as the red light slowly died. The world turned and your vision blurred. You barely saw it as the string fell away from your finger like it was never there.
Gone forever. Â
The red string of fate broke, and nobody wants things that are broken.Â
However, fate finds its way, even in places where itâs not wanted.Â
Red is love. Red is anger. Red is to never be seen again.  Â
Then
An empty ache ran through you.Â
Nothing was tying you to the world anymore. It felt like a punch to the stomach that would last forever and only get worse. You stood in shock, your eyes wide open. Tsukishima appeared from around the corner, stilling once he saw you. He stared at you with the same look; he felt it too. You quickly looked down at your left hand, and for the first time, you saw nothing.Â
The red loop around your finger was gone.Â
You looked back at Tsukishima in horror. Your mouth opened and closed not knowing what to say. You could feel yourself trembling.Â
â(Y/N),â Tsukishima said softly.Â
You didnât respond. Shaking your head, you slowly backed away from him. âHow could you?âÂ
He closed his eyes. He hated seeing you cry but never has he seen you cry because of him. He told you that he felt like crying whenever he saw you crying. Was that a part of being a soulmate? Would he still feel the same way now?Â
Tsukishima couldnât answer any of her questions. How could he explain what he felt when he didnât even know it himself?Â
Sometimes things just fall apart without any rhythm or reason.Â
âI donât understand. I donât understand.â Her voice was quiet, barely above a whisper. It was the first time he heard her so hollow. (Y/N)âs watery eyes met his. Donât cry. Please, donât cry. âWhy arenât you saying anything?â
â(Y/N)ââÂ
âItâs not supposed to break,â she whispered. (Y/N)âs voice became distant and far away, she was talking to herself. Her fingers traced the base of the finger that once held the string as if her mind and body had to convince itself that the string wasnât there anymore. He felt himself do the same. The air he breathed was cold and dry as if it would never be spring again, stuck in an eternal winter. âNo one ever said anything about it breaking, or that it could break. Itâs supposed to last forever.â Â Â Â Â
âI didnât mean tooââÂ
(Y/N)âs eyes turned hard. âAre you happy now?âÂ
Happy? How could he be happy?
âI mean, you must hate me so much for this to happen,â she continued.
âStop,â he said. Tsukishima reached out for her. He could barely feel her skin touch his fingers before she pulled away, flinching back as if his touch was acid.
(Y/N) bit her lip. âStay away from me.â Â
Tsukishima couldnât move. He watched as (Y/N) ran across the street in the direction of her house. Once she faded from view, he numbly found his way back to his house and sat on the steps leading up to the porch. He moved to rub his eyes, and his hand came back wet.Â
All you wanted to do was go home. You counted down the minutes to the final bell. You hated the way people looked at youâand at Tsukishima. Even though you didnât tell anyone what happened, and you were sure he didnât either, everyone seemed to know.
You kept your head down as you walked home.Â
You noticed it this morning. Your mom had bought you some roses earlier that week and they were colourlessâ a monotone grey. At first, you thought that it must have been a trick of the light or morning dizziness, but the colour never came back.Â
On your way to school, stop signs were monotone, the red light in the street light didnât turn, things you didnât even notice, flowers, cars, every colour was different. Â
Red was gone from your sight.Â
The bus couldnât come faster. School wasnât doing you any good, so you ditched last period and decided to take the long way home by walking. But soon your legs grew tired and stopped at the next bus stop you saw. You only knew the times of the buses after school, so you were standing at the bus stop for a while now.Â
You turned your head quickly as you noticed Tsukishima coming down the street with the bus nowhere in sight. You straightened your back and kept your head forward pretending that you didnât see him. You were at a concert, the beach, or in outer space â anywhere but here.Â
Someone tapped your shoulder.Â
You closed your eyes and waited for the sound of the bus.Â
â(Y/N)?âÂ
You said nothing.Â
â(Y/N)...Please. I want to talk to you.âÂ
You gritted your teeth. âIf I tell you to go away, will you?âÂ
Tsukishima sighed and pressed your shoulder lightly, which made you turn to face him. There was redness around his eye. âIf you talk to me, then, yes, I will.âÂ
You finally met his eyes and gave him a blank face. Lately, thatâs all you could muster when you faced anyone. You were too tired to be sad and nothing made you happy enough to smile. You raised your eyebrows in expectation, not trusting your voice to ask him what he wanted.  Â
He was silent for a minute, like the courageous Tsukishima took a wrong turn on his way to talk to you.Â
âAre you...Are you okay?â
Your hand curled into a fist.Â
âAm I okay.â You frowned. âYou donât get it, do you?âÂ
Tsukishima frowned.Â
Your throat tightened and eyes watered. But you refused to cry. âIt was not just your life, Tsukishima. It was mine too. I canât stand here and listen to whatever you want to say because â itâs you and I know that whatever you say will make me forgive you. And I think I deserve better than that.âÂ
You heard the bus pull up and took the bus pass out of your pocket. You stepped onto the bus and turned back one last time. Tsukishima stood in front of you, his mouth opened slightly as if he wanted to say something.Â
âYou already made your decision the moment you made mine,â you said, âso you either live with it, or donât. And if you don't know, then talk to someone who cares, but that person isn't me, not anymore.â
Now
The sparks of happiness never last long. Nothing could fully fulfill the void of not having a soulmate. Everything seemed a bit darker without red and you grew a resentment to red roses. Â
But, the sparks of happiness did last longer the moment your daughter was born and every moment after that.Â
You were lucky. You found someone who made you smile, though they did to lose their soulmate to illness. You didnât tell them what happened to you for a long while after you met, and when you did, you did it over the course of a week, giving them tiny pieces here and there.Â
Sometimes you thought it would be easier to say your soulmate died too because in a way he did. But you never felt comfortable to say it. It felt wrong.Â
Today was your daughter's first day of school and it was already not going well.Â
Your daughter clung to your leg as you tried to walk away. âI donât want to go! I want to go home!âÂ
You sighed and gave her a hug. She held onto you tighter. âHey, youâre going to have an amazing time. I met some of the best people here. Youâre going to make great friends and meet fantastic teachers. Do you really want to miss out on all of those things?âÂ
Your daughter nodded. âYes, letâs go home.âÂ
You closed your eyes and looked past her shoulder. A tall boy with blond hair sat on the carpet waiting for the other students to arrive. A dark pair of glasses sat on the bridge of his nose.Â
He looked like someone you used to know.Â
âWhy donât you talk to that boy over there?âÂ
Your daughter looked over her shoulder and saw the boy. She walked over to the boy and began to talk to him. He looked up and smiled.
A red burst of light shined through the room. Â
So! Hello everyone. I am not dead and still (kind of) writing. University is HARD and has so much work accompanying it. Iâve been editing this for like 2? 3? Months since school started, doing tiny pieces here and there when I just wanted to write to de-stress but didnât want to come up with anything new :)
This is a revamp of a oneshot that I wrote in our first book and it follows the same storyline , but I basically rewrote it into the way I write now and added stuff. There might be some new stuff too. Oh! And there may or may not be a part two for this...cause originally there were 4 fours and these are the first two. The third one was written out of request and the fourth part Bacon wrote. If any of you want it, it could be something I edit/rewrite later, but those parts werenât originally a part of the idea.Â
Sorry to anyone who requested one-shots that Iâm writing and have not gone out yet...or have been written. Hopefully during the break Iâll get a lot of them done and they could be posted during our usual every other week or just when they're done.Â
Thank you for reading - Kiwi
night comforts
pairings: eren/gn!reader
content: fluff, comfort, nightmares, death mention, descriptive but not graphic death explanation
a/n: fluffy eren is very much so needed after chapter 139 ;;>Â
__________
memories flashed through your eyes like a vivid picture. even in your unconscious state, it felt as real as the day it had happened. from when everything started to the end. their screams, their cries, their pleads, how you felt. and your father. how he died. how you were the reason he died.
the night air was cold, it brought shivers to your arms as you sat up from the bed. the action had caused your blanket to fall down from around your body, exposing you to the cold air. you paid no mind to it, however. your chest instead heaved, mind swirling with previous thoughts pertaining to the dream you just had.
peeking from over your bunk, you checked to see if anyone had woken up due to your outburst. thankfully, it seemed as if no one had woken up. so, you gently threw your legs over the edge of the bed and slowly made your way down. a shiver wracked down your spine once your feet touched the cold floor. you were quick to put on your shoes.
if you were too loud, you were sure shadis would have you running laps for as long as daylight lasted. so, you walked slowly towards the forest side of the camp, hands buried in your pockets with a small frown. the night air was cold- but comforting. it cooled you down and helped clear your head from the nightmare. even now as you thought about it, you needed a distraction.
you shuddered, a harsh wave of wind blowing past your face as you neared a small opening to the forest. once you had wandered over to it, you realized that it was in front of a lake. you had seen it more than once when out during mock missions or on odm gear, but not really ever at night. it was beautiful.
after a minute or two, you found a small little perch to sit down at. you pulled your knees up to your chest. the silence the forest gave was comforting, even though the wind made it hard to ignore the cold creeping into your body, it felt nice. it had just started to get cold, the seasons finally shifting from the unbearable heat. while everyone else complained about the cold, you were thankful for it. it used to be your father's favorite season, there were so many things you did with him and your brother. from snowballs to makeshift snow castles, it almost seemed like a dream. though, now that you were sitting here alone, you realized it had been a dream.
before you could stop them, tears began to well up in your eyes. how long had it been since you thought about him? how long had it been since you stopped pushing it away and distracting yourself?
you were cut out of your thoughts abruptly when a noise came from behind you. adrenaline spiking, you turned around quickly. in the midst of your action, you almost fell off of the rock you had been perched on, but an arm grasped onto your own forearm and pulled you up before you could fall into the water.
"what the fuck?" you yelled, moving to throw a punch at the person who had snuck up on you, which was blocked immediately.
"calm down (y/n)! it's me, eren!" he cried out, holding both of your arms now to control your movements.
his voice caused you to relax immediately, however it didn't quell the annoyance he had caused. you faced towards him, yanking your arms away quickly.
"what were you thinking eren? you scared the shit out of me, what're you even doing out here in the first place?" you demanded.
eren matched your glare, soon to cross his arms as he scoffed, "i came out looking for you because i saw you walk in this direction. i wanted to make sure you didn't get lost. the real question is why are you sneaking out here after hours,"
you scoffed, "oh please eren, you don't need to know everything I'm doing. you didn't have to follow me out here- because now if we both get caught, you get punished too," you put your hands on your hips, giving him a look.
eren huffed out in slight agitation. he didn't respond for a few moments, instead shifting his eyes around your own to your face. his expression softened, and he reached a hand up towards your face, faltering when you flinched in surprise. he continued on after a moment or two, soon to gently cup your face with a frown, "why're you crying?" he murmured.
the feeling of his thumb gently swiping underneath your eye had you closing your eyes in response, your breath hitching. his touch was surprisingly...comforting. he didn't remove his hand even after you opened your eyes and stared back into his own.Â
"nothing really...just, nightmares," your voice had dropped down into a whisper, taking on an ashamed lilt.Â
it was almost like when the two of you were kids. everytime something happened, eren was always the quickest one to go out of his way to comfort you. when your older sister came back from a mission and the two of you got into fights. he was the first one to come to your aid before your own brother; even when your dad had told you what had really happened to your mother. he was always there.
eren sighed gently and dropped his hand, causing you to shiver once the warmth he had lent left your cheek. "you haven't talked to me about it before," he inquired softly, moving to take his cape off of his shoulders to wrap it around you once he had realized you didn't have anything to keep you shielded from the cold.
"i didn't want to," you replied, quick to continue as you watched confusion and slight hurt cover his expression, "you have so much more to deal with, you don't deserve my baggage," you told him gently, moving to grasp at his hand- which he immediately returned.
âthat's bullshit, (y/n)," he said, his expression nothing less than angry. it worried you, but he cut you off before you could even open your mouth, "i care about you. just because you want to endure things on your own doesn't mean you have to," he told you with a heavy frown, turning his head away with a slight blush.
"a-and even if you don't wanna tell me, at least tell mikasa- or armin- or even, hell, annie- just...someone..." he added on, almost bashfully.
you didn't say anything for a moment, staring up at eren in surprise. sure, the two of you were friends, but you didn't think he cared for you in that way. at least, not with mikasa and annie around. you could have sworn he had feelings for one of those two- but now that you're standing here with him, you realized the look on his face matched the one yours always had when you were with him. it caused you face to flush bright red.
clearing your throat, you nodded shyly and looked towards the lake, messing with the hem of his capeâs fabric, "i appreciate it eren...and, uh, i care for you too...just so you know," you told him softly, causing him to grunt.
he soon tugged on your hand, shifting so that he was sitting on top of the rock that you were previously on, "c'mon, let's stay here for a while...and if you want, you can tell me about that nightmare," he told you softly, prompting you to follow.
you smiled and nodded, "yeah, sounds like a plan,"
                   â˘â˘â˘
A month ago, Sarah would have given anything to be where she was now: sitting around the fire at the Chateau with the Pogues, John Bâs arms wrapped around her as they laughed and listened to JJ tell ghost stories.
And she was thrilled to be backâ the three month long chase for the gold in the Bahamas had been exhausting, and she and John B had missed the Pogues so much that it hurt. But theyâd done itâ theyâd found the gold, and returned to the Outer Banks a whole lot richer than when theyâd left it. Sheâd testified to the cops, they all had, and now her dad and brother were being tried on all sorts of charges.
And it was hard, but she was getting through it. With John Bâs help, and the Pogues.Â
There was just one problem: JJ and Kiara.
Well, maybe problem was the incorrect word to use. There was nothing wrong with them, but ever since her and John B had returned and reunited with the group, Sarah had noticed that they were acting... different.
She hadnât even been friends with the Pogues for that long, so maybe the few whirlwind days of cop chases and treasure hunts werenât enough to go off of, but Sarah couldnât just ignore it.
JJ and Kiara were close, she knew that. Kie was close with all of the Pogues, they were her best friends. And Sarah knew that theyâd all had a thing for her at some point, that John B had kissed Kiara during their hunt for the gold, but Kie had always insisted that she would never, ever reciprocate their feelings.
Personally, Sarah thought her best friend was full of shit. Sheâd known them for yearsâ how could she not have feelings for at least one of them?
But she knew that conversation wouldnât go over well with Kiaraâ and they were still getting used to being friends again, she didnât want to rock the boat.
Still, she couldnât prevent herself from noticing things.
Like how these days, JJ and Kiara were always touching, as if physical contact wasnât just a want, but a need. It was little thingsâ sitting a little too close on the couch to be normal, knees and shoulders brushing, JJâs head on Kiaraâs shoulder and her running her fingers through his hair. JJ helping Kiara into the boat even though she didnât need it, grinding on each other at the Boneyard, finding them cuddling on the pullout after falling asleep there the night before.
And it wasnât like they were trying to hide it. Even now, Kiara was leaning against JJâs legs, her head on his knee and his fingers braiding her hair as she laughed at whatever Pope was saying.
It was painfully obvious, so how the hell was Sarah supposed to stay quiet?
She cracked when she found them lying in the hammock one day, fingers brushing as they passed a joint between them, an entangled mess of limbs that made it difficult to tell where JJ ended and Kiara began.
She asked Kiara if they could talk, watched as she murmured something in JJâs ear that Sarah couldnât hear. He grumbled, wrapping his arms around her waist when she tried to leave, and Kiara was smiling as she forced herself from his grip.
Sarah raised her eyebrows at her as they headed inside the Chateau, but she made sure they were far enough away before she said, âOkay, enough is enough. You. JJ. Spill. And donât even bother denying it.â
She thought Kiara would deny it, scoff and roll her eyes and say Sarah was being delusional, or too romantic, or any one of her usual deflections. But instead, she froze, her shoulders sagging as if sheâd run out of air.
The change in her mood was dramatic enough that Sarah faltered, suddenly regretting bringing it up all together.
âKie, Iâm sorry, Iââ
âIt doesnât matter,â Kiara snapped, cutting her off, but she wouldnât meet Sarahâs gaze. âItâs nothing, Iâm notââ
âKie, please donât do that,â Sarah sighed, moving towards her, but Kiara took a step back. âDonât pretend like itâs nothing, we both know thatâs a lie. If you would justââ
âWhat, Sarah? What should I do?â She asked, and Sarah flinched at her sharp tone. Her gaze flicked towards the screen door, and Kiara must have been thinking the same thing she was, because her voice was quieter as she continued. âIâm not going to tell him, I canât. Donât bother trying to convince me.â
âBut JJ loves you, it wouldnât be a big deal,â Sarah told her, remembering all the times sheâd caught JJ staring at Kiara when she wasnât looking, the smile on his face when she was telling them a story about sea turtles or rode a wave better than he did, the heat and lust in his eyes whenever she danced with him. âJust tell him the truth.â
âIt would be a big deal,â Kiara insisted, hands on her hips and fire in her eyes. âWeâve been best friends for years, Sarah, okay? Do you know how many times Iâve shot him down? It wouldnât be fair to bring this up now, not when everythingâs finally back to normal.â
âOh, bullshit,â Sarah said, shaking her head. Â âYouâre just scared, Kie. Thatâs normal.â
âOf course Iâm scared,â Kiara hissed, her eyes suddenly filling with tears. Sarahâs heart twingedâ fuck, this was worse than sheâd thought. Because Kiara didnât just like JJ. No, this wasnât some schoolgirl crush, this was the real deal. The Iâm in love with you kind of deal. âAnd donât you think that I want to tell him? But you donât get it, Sarah. After you and John B...â
She paused, her gaze darkening like any of the Pogues did when they mentioned Sarah and John Bâs disappearance, her bottom lip trembling.
Sarah felt a familiar rush of guilt. Theyâd tried to think of a way to contact the Pogues for weeks, wanting to keep them safe and protect themselves as well, and theyâd eventually decide to send a postcard with a coded message and a burner phone.
Kiara had cried for the entire call, and JJ and Pope hadnât stopped talking, but none of them had mentioned what it had been like without them. Sarah had avoided asking, not wanting to push, but...
âKie, what was it like when we were gone?â She asked, careful not to use the word dead. John B had made that mistake once, joking about it, and JJ had left the Chateau and slammed the door behind him without a word. Kiara had apologized to John B on his behalf, followed him out. Theyâd found them at Rixonâs Cove later, JJâs hair wet from surfing and Kiara wearing his sweatshirt.
âSarah, I donâtââ
âYou can be honest with me. Please. I want to knowââ
âFine, it was awful!â Kiara screamed, and Sarah didnât think there was anyway JJ hadnât heard them by now. So much for being discreet. âWe were all mess, we thought youâd died, for Godâs sake. Pope was barely around, JJ was getting drunk by noon, beating up Kooks every chance he got. And I...â
She faltered, as if debating whether or not to continue. Kiara had always been like this, sheâd noticed. She would be more than happy to help other people with their problems, but when it came to her own? Not so much.
Kiara shook her head, as if forcing herself to pull it together. âI was a mess, too. I could barely sleep, I kept having nightmares. And JJ was the only person who was there for me. We barely spent a minute apart afterward, you know? Heâd sit with me for hours at the Wreck, and I stayed at the Chateau every night. You want to know why? Because I was so scared that he would go back to his dad, and that Iâd lose him like I lost the two of you. And I canâtâ I canât lose him, Sarah, Iââ
She was hyperventilating now, and Sarah wrapped her arms around her as Kiara buried her face in her shoulder, her tears wet against Sarahâs bare skin. She didnât know what to do except murmur soft words of comfort, and curse herself for bringing it up in the first place. Kiara was right, she didnât know, and she should have asked before now.
âHey, is everything okayââ
Of course, JJ chose that moment to enter the house.
Sarah was facing the door, so she got to watch his facial expression change as he realized that Kiara was crying, saw JJ falter, his smile fading.
He was rushing forward in an instant, his gaze concerned but determined, obviously ready to comfort Kie if she needed it, but Kiara was already out of Sarahâs arms, brushing the tears from her cheeks and moving towards the door.
âI think Iâm gonna call it a night, guys. See you tomorrow.â
Sarah didnât mention that it was only eight, or that the Pogues had been planning to go night fishing. She stayed quiet, watching JJ.
âKie, wait,â he said, catching her by the arm as she walked past him, pulling her close and talking so quietly that Sarah had to strain her ears to hear what he was saying. âAre you okay? Whatâs wrong?â
âIâm fine, JJ,â she snapped, and Sarah saw Kiara flinch at the harshness of her own voice. God, she was so freaking whipped it was hilarious. âIâm just tired, I want to go home.â
âFine,â he said, his eyes narrowing even as his shoulders sagged and he raised his hands in surrender. âIâll come with you, let me justââ
âNo,â Kiara said, her tone cold and leaving no room for argument. Sarah wondered if JJ saw through itâ probably not, boys were oblivious. âI want to be alone. Donât follow me.â
With that, she turned and walked out the door.
It was silent as they listened to her car engine start, then the sharp sound of tires against gravel.
JJâs muttered fuck was quiet as he ripped his hat from his head and ran his fingers through his hair. He didnât look at Sarah, grabbing two beers from the fridge and collapsing onto the couch. He turned on the tv, offered her the second beer after tearing the cap off with his teeth, and Sarah took it as a invitation, sitting down beside him.
It took her a few minutes to gather up the courage to say something. âDo you want to talk about it?â
âNo,â he said, and while he didnât sound angry with her, she knew there was no point in pushing it. She hadnât known JJ for long, but she had already picked up on his dislike for being backed into a corner, literally and metaphorically. Kiara was the only person who could get away with it, or John B, but ever since theyâd returned from the Bahamas it was no question who JJ was leaning towards more.
Screw staying out of itâ Sarah was done watching her friends be miserable over each other.
She was going to do something about it.Â
                  â˘â˘â˘
Their plan for finding the gold had flaws, that was undeniable. But, she had learned that the first aspect of any mission, no matter subject or scale, was reconnaissance.
So, Sarah did her research. First step: observation.
She didnât push the matter with Kiara or JJ, and after a few awkward, clipped reactions, things were back to normal between them. Which was good; she already had enough work to do.
Sarah had been watching them before, but now she was paying attention. She noticed how JJ gravitated towards Kiara in any situation, the warmth and love that appeared on his face whenever she ranted about climate change, how when Kiara was dancing with a Kook at a Boneyard party he didnât take his eyes off of them for the entire night, ignored the girls who were trying to talk to him.
JJ was obvious, but Kiara was a little more subtle. She laughed at his jokes, but JJ was funny, so that wasnât that incriminating. She got pissed when JJ rode his bike without a helmet, but that was undeniably irresponsible, so it didnât say much on its own. But Sarah learned that you had to read between the lines, which was new, because Kiara was typically an open book.
Rafe corners her at a party one night, out on bail, somehow having slipped his police detail. Kiara holds her own, slaps him across the face when he calls her a slut. But JJ is JJ, of course, so when Rafe shoves Kiara in retaliation, he makes good on his prior threat and punches him in the throat. Honestly, Sarah doesnât know how he managed to move that fastâ it was like he appeared out of thin air the moment Kiara screamed.
It was after, though, when she saw itâ when John B and Pope had fallen asleep and she got out of bed to get a glass of water and found them sitting next to each on the porch. They were speaking too quietly for her to hear, but Kiara was bandaging JJâs bruises hand with the kind of care Sarah had only seen her use on baby sea turtles before. She was wearing a crop top, and JJâs gaze kept flicking to the bruises on her stomach from when Rafe had shoved her into the bar cart.
His hand hovered over the marks, and then Kiara nodded at him, as if giving him permission, and his fingers were brushing over them with a level of tenderness that Sarah knew JJ only showed a handful of people.
She left after that, because it felt like she was intruding, but Sarah had her evidence. Time for step two.
                   â˘â˘â˘
The first person she questioned was John B, but he was no help.
She asked him if heâd noticed how different things were between JJ and Kie, and he just shrugged, said heâd noticed but that it was best to let them work it out on their own.
Pope, to her surprise, took less convincing.
âWait, you and Kiara kissed?â
Apparently, Kiara had left more than a few key details out when sheâd filled Sarah in on what happened while she was gone.
âYep,â Pope said, nodding as he rung something up at the cash register. Sarah had caught him between shifts, insisted that she had something important to ask him. âAfter we sent John B off in the Phantom. Iâd told her I loved her, but... well, it obviously didnât work out, so.â
He didnât sound bitter, so she decided it was okay to continue. âSo... thatâs why her and JJ arenât together? Because she doesnât want to hurt your feelings?â
âNo,â he said, shaking his head. âKie and I talked it outâ weâre good. We just want different things, you know?â
He seemed unreasonably cool with it, and Sarah recalled Kiara telling her about a girl heâd met at his internship at the hospital. She was happy for him, Pope deserved it.
âOkay, great,â Sarah said, grinning at him. âSo, JJ and Kie. I was thinkingââ
âOh, no,â Pope said, interrupting her. âIâm not getting involved with that. They can figure out their own shit, they donât need our help.â
âSo you have noticed,â she said, ignoring the second part of what heâd said.
âOf course,â Pope scoffed, rolling his eyes. âTheyâre not exactly subtle. But this is JJ weâre talking aboutâ heâs been flirting with Kiara since the eighth grade, and she just kept rejecting him. Heâs not gonna believe that she likes him until she tells him. Besides, Sarah, do you really want to get between those two idiots?â
Sarah sighed, shaking her head. âI canât just do nothing. Theyâre gonna explode eventually, I can tell.â
âExactly,â Pope said, giving her a look. âAnd you donât want to be around them when it does.â
                  â˘â˘â˘
The explosion happens sooner than Sarah thought it would.
John B and Pope are standing in the driveway when she arrives at the Chateau, like dogs who have been sent out to the yard. Thereâs screaming coming from inside the houseâ itâs mostly Kiara, but she can hear JJâs voice too.
âWhatâs going on?â Sarah demanded as she shut her car door and approached the boys, eyes wide as she glanced at the Chateau.
âItâs John Bâs fault,â Pope informed her, cringing as Kiaraâs voice started to rise in volume again. âHe let it slip that JJ went back home, and then Kiara saw the bruises on his neck, and well...â
He trailed off, gesturing towards the Chateau with a helpless expression.
âSo youâre just letting them go at it?â She asked, scowling at them. John B flinched a little, like he always did when she got mad. âTheyâll kill each other!â
Pope shrugged. âArguing can be a turn-on for some people. Maybe theyâll fuck instead and put us all out of our misery.â
âPope, no,â Sarah hissed, though she did think he might have a point. âI have a planâ theyâre ruining it.â
At that moment, the porch door slammed against itâs hinges, and JJ appeared, fists clenched at his sides and his face lined with a bitter combination of anger and guilt.
The source of his anxiety was right behind him. Kiara was in rare form: eyes flashing, hands on her hips, screaming at JJ to come back here. Â
If it had been anyone other than JJ, Sarah was sure they would have caved by now. Kiara was scary when she was angry.
âJJ, Iâm talking to you!â Kiara screamed, kicking up dust as she stormed towards him. âListen to me, for Godâs sake!â
But JJ didnât turn around, palming the keys to his bike and mounting it. Sarah saw him glance at the helmet on the back, as if contemplating whether wearing it would lessen Kiaraâs fury. He didnât pick it up.
âJJ, I swear to God if youââ
JJ revved the engine, drowning out the sound of Kiaraâs voice. Sarah could see the tears in her eyes, how badly she was trembling. She was angry, but there was fear there too, and thatâs when she saw the bruises on JJâs neck, his split lip. Shit.
Kiara tried to say something else, but JJ cut her off. âWhat do you want me to do, Kiara? Itâs my house, heâs my dad. I canât just leave!â
âYes, you can,â Kiara insisted, her anger fading, as if she was trying to get JJ to listen to her. âYou can stay with John B, or Pope, or me. Iâll talk to my parentsââ
âYour parents donât want me within five feet of you,â JJ reminded her, something dark and bitter entering his gaze at the thought. âIâm not putting this on you, Kie. End of discussion.â
He put his foot on the gas pedal, but Kiara was standing in front of the bike, hands on her hips and a determined expression on her face.
âKie, get out of the way,â he said, glaring at her, but Sarah still saw that his hands were shaking. âIâm done talking about this.â
âWell Iâm not,â she snapped. âIâm sick of this, JJ! Iâm sick of worrying about you, I canâtââ
âWhy do you even care, Kie?â JJ shouted, and Sarah winced. Oh, he really had no idea, did he?
She didnât expect Kiara to tell him the truth, but thenâ
âBecause Iâm in love with you!â She screamed, her eyes brimming with tears as the words passed her lips.
Sarah held in a squeal as JJ froze, his foot leaving the gas pedal as he raised his head to look at Kiara.
âWhat?â He asked, as if he hadnât understood her, his mouth opening and closing like a fish gasping for air.
Sarah thought Kiara would stay quiet, or take it back, but her voice was firm and unwavering when she said, âIâm in love with you, JJ. And I canât keep watching you do this to yourself, I canât loseââ
But then Kiara stopped talking, because JJâs lips were pressed against her, and she seemed to have more important things to do as he wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her closer. She threaded her fingers through his hair, tugging at it, and John B wolf-whistled while Pope yelled at them to get a room.
Sarah just grinned. Pope had been right, she realized. JJ and Kiara hadnât needed her help, it had just taken a screaming match for them to finally get their heads out of their asses. Go figure.
Sheâd thought it would be weird, different, seeing JJ and Kie like this. But it was the exact oppositeâ the look in JJâs eyes when he stared at her was the same, and Kiara was shoving him in the shoulder and burying her face in the crook of his neck after he said something predictably idiotic. It wasnât different, it was just them, JJ and Kie.
As they made their way over to Sarah and the boys, Kiara slid her hands into JJâs, and she smiled at the identical grins on their faces.
Mission accomplished.
