I hate that we’re back here again. I remember participating the first year because it was something I could do, one small action of resistance. I haven’t participated since then because life got busy and I was barely active in any fandoms online for quite a while, but I am planning on participating again when the time comes.

To everyone who has ever been involved, thank you for keeping hope alive.

We're Still Here.

Eight years ago, when the results of the 2016 election became clear, a group of us pulled together what we thought would be a mid-sized fanworks auction as a way to throw some financial support to progressive organizations in need.

Since then, that circle has widened more than anyone could ever have anticipated. Our ever-growing community has done amazing things together, showing up for one another and for organizations on the ground all over the country doing vital, challenging work for vulnerable people.

We’ll still be here next year, but there’s another larger point to be made:

In this terrible time, it is still possible to build things together.

In fact, it is more urgent than ever that we build things together in order to bring the world a little closer to the world we want to live in.

There are people in your community online who need you. There are people in your neighborhood who need you, even if you haven’t met them yet — and if you haven’t, now is the time. We can and will survive, and help one another survive, by showing up for one another.

Take some time to mourn; we will be, too. And then let’s organize.

Stitches and Sentences Sunday

IT IS THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR!

The Carry On Countdown has brought me immeasurable joy every year, so this year I plan to participate in all thirty days and give back some of that joy to you all! Some days I'll share art that's really big and impressive, other days it will just be a small tidbit of fun. Regardless of the scale, I hope everyone is ready for thirty days of fabulous fiber art!

In fic news, after the MAJOR cliff hanger of Chapter 10 of The Boy Next Door, it is impossible to preview anything from the upcoming chapters without spoilers even for people who are caught up. And because I love a cliffhanger and didn't want to agonize over what to post today, have only the first sentence of Chapter 11. It is exactly six words. (I am so mean, I know.)

I come to you, oh High Priest of Horny Sunday, with a puzzle I’m stuck on. I say this with love and affection for all and a desire to keep everyone feeling welcome and horny on our most holy day. It’s awesome that so many people have loving wives to brag about in detail…. But for those of us who don’t, it’s kind of a bummer? And becomes a little “Ah this is for people who currently have partners, not me. I am embarrassed and sad I can’t participate equally and disappointed in myself that their fun makes me feel bad.”

Putting our heads together, is there some tag or something to sort this so everyone can continue to have fun, including feeling welcome and joyous in their wife-bragging? There’s not an easy answer here and the last thing I want to do is quash anyone’s Holy Horny! But maybe I’ll be taking a step back otherwise.

Update: finally found two places mentioning this. First, a completely unsourced german language forum user calling attention to a swordbelt (schwertgurt) not being a belt, the latter being used for supporting clothes, pouches and knives, and the former for the sword; they also mention swordbelts made of a vatiety of fabrics, including ropes encased in silk. Progress!

This put me onto a better sourced 2003 blog entry that calls this type of swordbelt the Naumberger Typ Schwertgurt, points out its apparent softness and light colour in art, and mostly discusses the distinct x-shaped pattern the belt makes on the scabbard, visible in several of the images above.

Two modern interpretations, the first by Andreas Bichler, author of that blog post:

Bichler rallies against modern swordbelts of this type that use hard, thick leather, pointing out that this widens out too quickly and can't be tied well in his experience, and instead argues for a soft, supple leather as depicted here. He briefly mentions it being tied without a buckle and fed through two tear shaped openings, though he mostly discusses how the scabbard is fastened.
