Binah looks elsewhere and her eyes are black and dull as chunks of coal, but with you they shine and ripple. you're reflected in her eyes, the one that matters most, the one she wants to hold and never let go. she can't, though. not right now. her hand slips from your shoulder as the door slides open, her expression returning to apathy. her gaze lingers on you, hurrying off into the next room in pursuit of your work, and slowly turns cold and flat again. until you return it remains that way, Binah's voice bored with everything and almost dead to the corpses and screams lingering in the hallways of her department. it only eases when she sees you again, stepping closer and taking your detailed reports with a simple, soft nod

her eyes reflect nothing whenever you die, nothing but faintly distant lights like the stars you love so much

they're brighter, softer when she becomes a Patron Librarian. she's found more peace in the lofted floors of this building, a table laden with tea and treats always at hand. and you. you, always by her side. to know that you're here and safe, that you'll always come back even after you fall. it makes her eyes shine more than almost any time in the facility, to have you held carefully in her arms as you sip tea together, surrounded by the scent of wood and paper. Binah hums quietly, reading a book in your hands over your shoulder. she leans in after a moment, pressing a soft kiss to the back of your head and chuckling faintly when you let out a noise of surprise

her eyes reflect only you in tender precision when you turn and do the same to the beauty mark on her cheek- only you, and your loving, adoring gaze back

at a bar with friends, a man puts his hand on my wrist. got a boyfriend? and yes, i do have a boyfriend, she's amazing. i am texting her while i wander around a gas station named after geese. i am visiting a swing state for a wedding. in the candy aisle i overhear: she's actually like a lesbian it's disgusting. two teenage girls with packaged sandwiches in their hands, giggling. no literally, like. i'm not, like. okay with her being there while we're all, like, naked and changing.

my girlfriend and i tailgate, drink gin and cider out of cups. from the frat group beside us, a man corrects himself with one of his friends: bro, i mean, nonbinary entity, and it makes everyone around him laugh, myself included. he razzes his friend the same way i would have killed for at 19 years old - like nothing happened, he continues: you apply sunscreen like an alien. he does a little sassy (and fairly accurate) dance interpretation of the motion. his friend is laughing so hard they're crying.

i am lucky, i live in a safe neighborhood in a safe state. my masc passenger princess comes up from DC. i drive her for an hour to where all the leaves are a violent arrangement of color. we walk along the trails, letting autumn into our blood. in this part of the state, there's a lot of pickup trucks and trump signs. when we chastely kiss before getting into the car, i accidentally make eye contact with a woman holding her child's wrist. she looks disgusted. she looks fucking pissed.

two hours later my girl and i are eating dinner on a patio, soaking in the last warmth of new england sun before the chill of winter sets in. we are giggling and trying to talk through plastic vampire teeth. at another table, i see a young woman sit up straighter. i watch her watch us. she blushes and takes her partner's hand from across the table. shy, like the taste of evening has just become something deeper.

it's worth it for this moment, i think. my lover is still humming the same song she's been singing for four days straight and i don't want to kill her for it. her guitar is beside my bed. her toothbrush is in my bathroom. in a few moments i will make us lunch. we are lucky enough to have found each other. it is lucky enough to be in love.

I wish we had more female characters like Eleanor Shellstrop. One of the most unlikable people you've ever met. Read a Buzzfeed article on most rude things you can do on a daily basis and decided to use that as a list of goals. Makes everyone's day worse just by being there. Dropped a margarita mix on the ground and tried to pick it up, only to get hit by a row of shopping carts which pushed her into the road where she was hit by a boner pill delivery truck, killing her instantly. Cannot keep a romantic partner despite being bisexual. Had a terrible childhood but will die before she gets therapy. Best employee at a scam company. Just the worst but also can't help but root for her to improve.

Absolute loser. Girl-failure. Bad at almost everything. Literally perfect female character.
