Hmmmm depends on the amount I win but I assume we're talking like at least a mil. I would def give my boyfriend a part of it and start looking for an appartement together? If its enough money to live comfortably for the rest of my life without working id def stop my studies then and there. I think the first thing I would do tho is, reasonably, freak out.
Anyway im good ig. Still really tired. Currently having medical exams to see if I have thyroid problems.

What is Integrative Medicine?
Integrative medicine is ideally encompasses all healing and treatment methods that are shown to work, and aims more to address the root of a health problem rather than just masking the symptoms with prescription medication. Integrative medicine approaches have been shown to be more cost effective in the long run, and prevention is as much a focus as cure. Integrative Medicine as a specialty Integrative Medicine as a medical specialty is relatively new, and there is recently a fairly new official Board certification available through the American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABOIM). Fellowship training is available at KUMC Integrative Medicine (University of Kansas Medical Center) and several other places. Integrative Medicine training programs can vary in quality, and many require an MD or DO degree. Sub-specialties of Integrative Medicine Integrative Medicine embraces all the healing arts that can potentially help a patient. Because of the broadness of this field, many practitioners tend to sub-specialize. Sub-specialties in Integrative Medicine can include energy medicine, orthomolecular medicine, and environmental medicine. Some practitioners will be more knowledgeable in their special areas of interest. You will find practitioners who specialize in treating chronic Lyme disease, thyroid problems, autoimmune issues, and such. Some practitioners have several areas of expertise. Energy Medicine Energy medicine encompasses modalities such as acupuncture, homeopathy, reiki, shiatsu, micro-current therapy, etc. Because we are only just beginning to have the instruments to measure these energies, and because results can often vary widely between practitioners, it is more difficult for conventional science to accept these methods of healing. Orthomolecular Medicine Orthomolecular medicine is based on hard science and research studies. The foundation of this science is the basic biochemical pathways of the human body. Pathways such as the Krebs cycle that are memorized then forgotten as soon as most doctors graduate from medical school are the basis of orthomolecular medicine. Individual genetic weaknesses are tested for and treatment is individualized. The importance of proper nutrition is recognized. Comprehensive vitamin and mineral testing identifies deficiencies that can then be addressed. We use a combination of knowledge of biochemical pathways, individual genetics, and vitamin and mineral testing to deliver targeted therapy. With this approach, using testing instead of guessing, one is likely to walk out my office with only a short list of supplements to take, as opposed to the "Let's throw all these supplements at you and see what sticks" approach, which has practitioners largely guessing, practicing cookbook medicine, and people having to take 2 bags of supplements and still not feeling better. Environmental Medicine In Environmental medicine, the effect of environmental toxins on biological function is recognized, and an individual's detoxification pathways can be supported in various ways to better enable them to function in a toxic world. How Integrative Medicine is different Because Integrative Medicine attempts to dig deeper than conventional medicine, very specialized lab work is often ordered. For example, instead of just getting an IgE (immediate reaction) food allergy panel, IgG (delayed reaction) food intolerance panels and IgA (mucosal) stool testing can be done. Instead of testing only B12 and folate levels, all B vitamins are important, and the full panel may sometimes be tested for. The Integrative Medicine physician ideally asks: 'why", and keeps asking and peeling back the layers of the onion until the root cause is found. What conventional medicine is good for Conventional medicine excels at treating acute diseases such as appendicitis, strep throat, bacterial pneumonia, and most conditions that one would go to the emergency room for. Where conventional medicine falls short Conventional medicine, however, tends to fall somewhat short when faced with more chronic disease such as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux), fibromyalgia, cancer, chronic fatigue, and such. The main focus of conventional medicine tends to be just to treat the end symptom(s) often without addressing the real root of the problem. This does not necessarily reflect a lack of caring or skill on part of the conventional doctor, but is more a function of the financial reality of private practice: 12 minutes per patient is simply not enough time to delve deeply enough. Example of the Integrative approach For example, the conventional medicine approach to GERD is usually to simply put a patient on acid-suppressors, sometimes for years. Many people actually produce less stomach acid as they age. Long term acid-suppression simply takes away what little stomach acid the patient had, further worsening the pre-existing problem of insufficient digestion. Furthermore, decreasing a person's ability to digest food in the stomach actually can promote the development of food allergies and intolerances. It can also promote micronutrient deficiencies that can then contribute to poorer health. Calcium and vitamin B12 are examples of nutrients that are better absorbed with acid. Instead of acid-suppression for GERD, Integrative Medicine attempts to discern the root of the individual's problem, be it food intolerances, not drinking enough water, not making enough stomach acid, having too much yeast or dysbiotic flora in the gut, etc. Instead of acid-suppressors, additional Betaine HCL, digestive enzymes, and probiotics might be given. Personalized medicine The personalized aspect of delivering Integrative medical care rejects the 'one size fits none' approach. People are biochemically individual, and must be treated as such. Doses of bio-identical hormones and other supplements and medications should be individualized where appropriate. With the advent of affordable genetic testing, I use 23andme genetic testing clinically to make personalized recommendations for someone. Integrative Medicine gives more time to the patient The average primary care office visit may only be 5 to 14 minutes... In this amount of time, it is near impossible to deliver the quality and depth of care required by Integrative Medicine. My typical new patient visit is often about 1 hour long, and follow up visits are typically 30 mins or so. I have had initial consultations take as long as 2 hours, and this was not the time my patient spend sitting waiting for me.. this was my personal face to face time with my patient. Integrative Medicine and reimbursement Unfortunately, because Integrative Medicine has yet to be fully accepted by mainstream insurance companies, patients getting integrative treatments often have to pay out of pocket for doctor visits and lab testing. Some less scrupulous clinics may also tack on extra fees for testing (if you pay the office instead of the lab this is likely to be the case) and over charge for supplements. Quality of Integrative Medicine practitioners Because training in Integrative Medicine is not uniform, quality of practitioners can vary. Some Integrative Medicine practitioners have just taken weekend courses here and there, while others have undergone formal 1 or even 2 year Fellowships under the close tutelage of an experienced practitioner, who was themselves previously taught by another. Some practitioners dabble in a myriad of things, while others specialize. Because the field is so broad, no one practitioner can possibly know everything. Someone specializing more in orthomolecular or functional medicine may not be as well versed in energy or manual medicine and vice versa. The future of medicine The Integrative approach is the medicine of the future as it tends to give better results especially for chronic medical conditions. It is a superior approach for prevention as well as for the maintenance and optimization of health. With the rise of environmental toxicity as well as the increase in illness caused by toxins around us, environmental medicine is critical and is likely to become required knowledge for the physician of the future. My chronic illness, how it started.

this. I want this to get to her and I'll take any help I can get. I rarely ask this but it'd mean to world to me. I wanna get my story
out there (even if this is only a part of the entire story. The rest I
might post sometime if you guys want me too. I think I did include
everything I wanted to for now though). Just thank you all so much!!! I

(Im really sorry about how long this is. Its like a little novel. Plus I'm
OCD and tend to talk/rant until it feels just right... I just wanted to
share it with all of you, since its something I would've shared on TSL,
even though it'd probably be too long for there... But I wanted to share it
here because most of those swifties can be found on tumblr, and I want you
all to hear this... Maybe it'll even get to Taylor too. But please read if
you can. It'd mean a lot to me. Also I tried writing this but then it got
deleted when I tried posting it, so hopefully this one posts (I ended up trying to post this ALL DAY. I'm so glad it's finally up).)
Hey Swifties! So, I thought I would post this because its something I'd
post on TSL if it was still around, as I shared pretty much my whole life
on there, and I always found swifties very easy to talk to (plus you're all
just the nicest people)! So, I wanted to share this on here since most
swifties can be found on tumblr. I'm sure i talked a little bit about this
on tsl (my user was stateofgrace1303, same as on here and ig) but I wanted
to tell you guys more, especially because its getting so much more intense
now and like I said I've always found swifties very easy to talk to you.
Basically, when I was 12, my dad took me to see the RED tour at Gillette
Stadium. We had gone to see the Speak Now tour there and I had been
completely wonderstruck (no pun intended) by Taylor that night. I was 10 at
the speak now tour and had idolized Taylor since I was 6 and she put out
TOMG (and I was known as the Taylor Swift girl by now at my school). So
even though I was 10 I asked my dad, if I save up the money will you take
me to see her when she comes again? And he said yes. About 2 weeks before
the show, I had saved up enough. He didn't think i could do it, but I did.
So, I got tickets and we went to the tour. But when I was walking towards
the stadium (we had parked in a lot right down the street), my vision
became weird, almost like tunnel vision although nothing was turning black
around the edges of my vision. My feet looked very far away from me.
Suddenly, a rush of dizziness came over me and instinctively i grabbed onto
my dads arm to keep from falling down. He asked if I was okay and I could
barely get out words for some reason. I was starting to sweat and we
thought maybe i was dehydrated, so we got into the stadium as quickly as
possible. I was gripping onto everything around me to keep from falling,
but eventually we got into the stadium and I got some water. We had seats
on the field, so that's where I was, drinking some water when suddenly I
was pretty sure I was going to throw up. It was starting to get super
uncomfortable so my dad brought my to the first aid, which was actually
right at the enterance on the field. So when we went in there my dad told
them what was going on and they all looked at me weird and said "people
never get sick. We usually treat bee stings and allergic reactions. We
almost never have people get sick" which actually surprised me. But, they
took me back and laid me down. Almost immediately I started puking. The
nurse I had actually had just had a baby and had some anti nausea
medication on her. So, she gave me that but it didn't work. And I just got
worse. My dad went to find me something to eat so I'd have something in my
stomach. He came back with some chips and iced/frozen lemonade but I threw
up every time. I was so dizzy at this point I was gripping onto the bed
they had me on and puking my guts out, as well as sweating a lot. After a
while, as it only got worse, they actually thought I might have had food
posioning and asked what I ate. But there they noticed something. I was
completely white. Like white as a ghost. Except for my lips, which were
turning blue. And I was struggling to breathe. They wanted to take me to
Boston Childrens and my dad asked if I wanted to, but it was Taylor. I
couldn't miss it. So I said no for that reason. But actually, everyone at
the stadium was trying to get me tickets for the show the next night as she
was playing two nights. Security guards, the nurses, my dads girlfriend...
But nobody could get tickets in the end which was okay. But later my dad
went and for a list of everybody's set times. I had been in first aid for
about an hour at this point. He came back with the list and said "I promise
I will not let you miss them" he said and pointed to Ed Sheerans name, then
Taylor, since I was a huge Ed fan as well. He knew I probably wouldn't be
able to stay, but even seeing them for a minute would've been perfect to
me. Another hour had passed, and I was still there in the same condition.
It was terrifying, and they were really pushing me to go to the hospital
(they wanted to call an ambulance because they actually thought something
very bad might happen if they didn't). But I keep pushing that off because
I wanted to see Taylor and Ed so badly. But, 2 hours I had been there in
the same condition, puking up everything, completely white with blue lips,
struggling to breathe, so dizzy I couldn't even sit up. It was starting to
get painful honestly. So, I suddenly just burst out crying. I was just a 12
year old who wanted to see my idol, and I got this... This weird sickness,
and got stuck in first aid. In so much pain. I didn't even really
understand what was happening. I had always been a sick kid. Always getting
colds and infections. In fact, I almost died as a baby from a problem with
my kidneys, and had become septic. Its a miracle I lived. But I had never
experienced anything like this... And to experience it when I was just
trying to see my idol? When it was only my second concert ever? It crushed
me tbh. My dad asked what was wrong and I finally said the words I had been
avoiding all night... "I wanna go home" (which was actually his
girlfriend's house who lived in Boston... I'm from Maine). And he said
"okay". That was all he needed and he left, walking back towards where we
left the car. However, around 7:30ish the traffic in this area is really
weird I cant even explain it. But traffic can only go one way, instead of
both ways like normal.. So he couldn't get a ride back to the car and had
to walk, and then drive the car in traffic all the way to the stadium to
pick me up. So i had to wait a while, and while I did I heard clapping and
then a British voice say "hello Boston" and he started playing give me
love. I listened to him play and i only cried more because I was so
frustrated I couldn't go out there to see him. About half way through the
set, my dad showed up. They let him park in a no parking zone to come and
get me so he was right next to the enterance to the field. They were going
to put me in a wheelchair, but instead my dad came and helped me up. He was
holding me up straight and almost dragged me out of the first aid station,
into the stadium. I remember this part so well. The air hit me, I heard
Ed's voice clearly and saw him on stage, and suddenly, I let go of my dad,
and I was able to stand on my own... And I was fine. It was like a miracle.
I yelled to my dad over the music "is it too late to stay?" And he screamed
back "what??? After all that you wanna stay???" And I said yes, so, we
stayed. He went to go move the car (the girl was so nice who did the
parking, he told her the story, and he just needs to park the car and het
back in the stadium, how much would it cost. And the girl said park
wherever you want no charge. I thought that was seriously the sweetest
thing.) Sooo he did that, and since I was only 12 in a huge stadium, one of
the cops that was patroling the place stayed with me and asked me all kinds
of questions about Ed Sheeran, especially about the A-Team, when he played
it. He said "this isn't his song right?? Is this a cover?? I know this
song." And I told him it wad and told him all about it. It was the ideal
conversation for 12 year old me 😂 Anyway, my dad came back, we got to our
seats, and I actually met Andrea for a very brief moment! And before I knew
it, Taylor was playing. And I had made it through the entire show. I woke
up the next morning, still feeling a little sick but actually felt better
after eating, so I thought the worst was over. But, I was wrong... I didn't
know that one night would become my life... And god I wish I had gone to
the hospital... Maybe I would be okay now if I had... But anyway... A month
later (in August), it happened at my friends end of summer party. Then a
month later (in September), while I was at school... Each time worse than
the time before. Everyone had been informed I was having issues, but nobody
had seen anything happen yet. I seemed like myself. Then one day, I was on
my way to lunch with my friends, and I collapsed in the hallway... Same
thing happening. All my friends freaked out and 2 stayed with me while the
rest went to get the nurse. She actually thought I was dying, and honestly
I could've. She called my mom and said she wasn't sure if she should call
my mom or an ambulance. Then my mom came and got me and immedaitly took me
to my doctor (because she said next time it happens to come in so they
could monitor me). I was monitored and fell asleep, then 4 hours later i
woke up like nothing happened. After that i was pulled out of school and
constantly at the doctor. And I just got sicker and sicker... Which was
later diagnosed as... "Anxiety". By an unqualified doctor. He was a thyroid
doctor and diagnosed me with that?? As time went on, I got incredibly sick
to the point I can't even move. I have become completely disabled and lose
control of my body a lot. It's like my brain is disconnected from my body.
And I get this weird feeling im falling off a cliff and I cant feel my arms
and when that happens, I cant move at all. I cant even express how bad it
can get, how scary and painful it is. I'm a lot sicker than most people
think I am... I spend most days in bed, actually unable to move. I find
ways to keep my spirits up, luckily. Mostly its listening to Taylor and
watching friends but yeah 😂 I have days where I can't even sit up I'm so
dizzy and weak and it hurts so much. Its also terrifying when you don't
have full control over your own body. Absoultely terrifying. Although I
have okay days where I can stand up and function for a little bit, most
days lately have been like this... Bad and living from my bed due to
weakness and dizziness (extreme dizziness honestly). I have days where its
even a struggle to breathe, the most simple thing in the world. It gets
depressing at times... When you spend all ur time in bed or a wheelchair it
really can vet discouraging... But I'm still fighting. And I'm so happy I
am. And like I said, Taylor always lifts me up. Even on my worst, most
disabled and bed ridden days. Oh, that reminds me... I also have seizures
now, sadly. But I hadn't had what happened that night at the RED tour in a
while though... Until one night last year... While I was seeing Ed Sheeran
in Gillette Stadium 😂 Maybe its him?? I dont know 😂 Anyway, I spend most
days in bed, and I do online schooling now. I've seen Taylor twice since
then. For 1989 and for reputation. With 1989 I needed a lot of help but I
got through it. Reputation, it had gotten so bad I needed a wheelchair and
I still do whenever I go out, really. I dont have full control over my body
and I'm too weak and just very sick. I'm really hoping to go to lover fest
but if i do will need a wheelchair and even then I'll probably still feel
sick... But Taylors worth it ❤ Hopefully can get ada seating like with rep.
Wanted to keep this last part short but I think I failed 😂 Mainly wanted
to focus on the red tour. My health story is so incredibly long, I couldn't
say it all (maybe I will later). However, for now, I will tell you this, I
was diagnosed with a thyroid disease, migraines, and seizures. Then it was
discovered that all of this... Was advanced Lyme Disease... And it created
something called Dysautonomia (basically a disfunction of the autonomic
nervous system, which most people don't even realize they have, or how
important it is, until it makes you sick and either nearly kills or
cripples you... Depending on the kind though.) Also known as POTS, or
Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (there are actually 15 kids of
dysautonomia, that being one of them, I might possibly have more than one
kinda, were not sure yet. But its basically half cardiology half
neurology). And there's no cure... I could be this way, this disabled and
sick for a while... But there are treatments that might work luckily!!!
Since there are no Dysautonomia clinics in Maine, I either have to go to
New York, Baltimore, Cleveland, or Minneapolis. So looks like im taking a
trip! Sadly to a hospital, but still 😊 I honestly don't know how we'll pay
for it, but I need it, or I will spend my life like this. So I'm sure we'll
find a way... Like I always seem to do in life, no matter what 😊❤ Oh, and
funny thing is, I have something called PANS as well... So I have Pots and
Pans 😂😂😂 Anyway, I just wanted to share this with you guys because like
I said you guys are always so great and Taylor is my favorite artist so I
wanted to share it with the people who understand my love for her. I've
been a huge fan of her for 13 years (I'm 18, 19 next month, now). Theres
something about her... She's always helped me but especially now. She makes
me so happy and feel so safe during this time... Im fact, the only time i

Taylor. I even have a Long Live tattoo on my wrist because I felt it
represented my love for her the most, and what we've made as a fandom, the
magic we've created. Plus, it reminds me that I'm fighting my battle (this
"dragon") with Taylor and her music on my side, as well as all of you. And
it makes me smile. I can't wait to get more Taylor tattoos... Honestly,
after all of this and the other health issues I faced as a baby and a
child, I can't believe I'm still here, that I'm still living... Especially
because since I've always been so sick with so many different illnesses and
health issues to the point I'm disabled, my immune system is so weak. I
truly cannot believe I'm still here. But... I guess my body just isn't
ready to give up. It hasn't yet at least!!! And it doesn't want to. It
won't. I'm strong. Me, and my body, want to fight until the very end. And
I'm grateful for that. So grateful that I am still alive, and still
fighting every day of my life. It might be hard, and I can't function or do
really anything but lay in bed and watch tv most days, but I'm just so
thankful that I'm still alive, that it's okay I have to be at the doctors
so much and have to take all these meds (I do anything at this point that
can help me even the slighest). And no matter what life throws at my
health, my body always fights it and gets right back up. I fall down 10
times, I stand up 11. And I could not have the courage and strength to do
this if it wasn't for my idol, Taylor Swift. I've been a fan of Taylor for
13 years (I'm 18 now, 19 next month) so her and her music have helped me
through every problem I have ever faced, and this is no different. She has
a song for everything, so I can always find something to listen to that
makes me feel like she understands and she's telling me it'll be okay...
And ever since LOVER came out, I've been listening to soon you'll get
better on days its really bad, and my girlfriend sends me that song on bad
days too... It makes me feel safe. And like I can fight this. Thank you,
Taylor. I will never be able to repay you. I may struggle with this every
single day im here on earth, but with your music and the support I feel
from the swiftie fam, I know I'll get through it. Anyway... I guess I

they had to give me an IV. I was in the first aid station, wrapped up in my
nightmare before Christmas blanket, on a stretcher with an IV in my hand
pretty much the entire night. It was so painful. When I arrived to first
aid I was actually unresponsive. Like I knew what was happening but I
couldn't talk or open my eyes. All I could do was make very small
movements. It felt like my body was shutting down. I was having bad heart issues as well and they wanted to give me a medicine fot my nausea but since I had lyme disease it could make my heart issues worse so they had to give me an EKG... Right there at the concert 😂 Interesting... But, I got through it.

Food Allergy vs. Food Intolerance: Why the Difference Matters
Although we have a lot to learn about food intolerances, ever-growing research proves that they aren’t psychological or make-believe. Read on to learn the differences between a true food allergy and a food intolerance, some examples of common food intolerances, and how healing your gut can, in some cases, alleviate the problem.

Food Allergy vs. Food Intolerance—They’re Not the Same
Food allergies are on the rise, especially in children:
Between 1997 and 2011 food allergies increased by 50 percent in American children (1)
Today, around 1 in 13 children and 1 in 25 adults in the United States suffer from a life-threatening food allergy (2)
In a true food allergy, a person’s immune system produces immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies in response to her consumption of a particular food. These IgE antibodies initiate a cascade of events that can affect the skin (hives), the respiratory tract (wheezing), and/or the GI tract (vomiting).
In severe anaphylactic cases, an allergic reaction can be life threatening if not treated immediately with epinephrine.
Even more common than food allergies, food intolerances are estimated to affect up to 20 percent of the population in industrialized countries. (3, 4, 5) Food intolerances are not IgE mediated and are thought to be caused by specific enzyme deficiencies, impaired food absorption, and other GI issues. (6) In many cases, other immunoglobulin antibody responses may also be involved (IgA and IgG)—but more on that later.
Food intolerances generally don’t trigger the dramatic or immediate reactions associated with food allergies, but they’re every bit as real, with varied symptoms like nausea, vomiting, respiratory problems, brain fogginess, and skin reactions such as eczema.
If unmanaged, food intolerances can have serious health consequences too. If you don’t know you have a food intolerance and keep eating the offending food(s), you increase your risk of developing an autoimmune disease, neurological disorders, and more. (7, 8, 9, 10)
Five Common Food Intolerances
Let’s explore some common food intolerances that affect millions of people.
1. Celiac Disease
Often confused with a wheat allergy, celiac disease (CD) is not an allergy but rather an autoimmune disease, characterized by an inflammatory immune response to wheat gluten, rye, barley, and related proteins. Affecting 1 to 5 percent of Americans, CD usually manifests as GI disturbances like abdominal pain and diarrhea, but many patients with CD have no GI symptoms and may not even know they have it. (11, 12)
These atypical, or “silent,” forms of CD are far from harmless. Silent CD is associated with higher rates of iron deficiency, anemia, osteoporosis, neurological symptoms, and a nearly fourfold increase in the risk of death. (13, 14)
2. Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance
CD screening only tests for antibodies to a few components found in gluten, but people can react to many other components of wheat and gluten in a condition called non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). (15, 16, 17, 18, 19) No robust diagnosis yet exists for NCGS. The best clinical description is: “a reaction to gluten that resolves when gluten is removed from the diet, and CD and allergy have been ruled out.” (20)
Despite its inexact diagnosis, NCGS is real—and studies are proving it. Double-blind, placebo-controlled trials indicate that a subset of people who do not have CD or a wheat allergy can and do indeed react horribly to gluten when they don’t know whether they are being given gluten or not. (21, 22, 23)
Up to one in 20 Americans may have NCGS, which can affect the brain, skin, endocrine system, stomach, liver, blood vessels, and more. NCGS can produce a wide range of symptoms: (24, 25, 26)
Bloating
Abdominal pain
Gas and related pain
Diarrhea
Constipation
Tiredness
Headache
Anxiety
Foggy mind
Eczema
Chronic fatigue
Joint and muscle pain
Asthma
Depression
Unfortunately, many health professionals still don’t take NCGS seriously, which does a huge disservice to those suffering. In fact, NCGS, especially if undiagnosed, can be even more serious than CD. Epithelial damage to the gut, systemic immune activation, and systemic inflammation are all linked to NCGS. (27) By continuing to eat gluten, patients with NCGS are at higher risk of developing arthritis, thyroiditis, multiple sclerosis, ataxia, diabetes, and even amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease). (28, 29, 30, 31)
3. FODMAP Intolerance
Sometimes, people who think they are sensitive to gluten may actually be intolerant to FODMAPs, or fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols. FODMAPs, a type of carbohydrate, are found in many common foods besides wheat, including:
High-fructose fruits
Asparagus
Brussels sprouts
Garlic
Onions
In the case of FODMAP intolerance, the GI tract isn’t fully digesting and absorbing these short-chain carbs, which are then fermented by gut bacteria, creating gas and increasing fluid movement into the large bowel. (32)
FODMAP intolerance is common in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). By adhering to a low-FODMAP diet, up to 75 percent of people have relief from functional gut disorder symptoms, especially IBS. (33, 34, 35, 36, 37). However, a low-FODMAP diet is not advisable long term because it can decrease microbial diversity and density of beneficial bacterial species. (38, 39)
4. Lactose Intolerance
Up to 65 percent of the world’s population—literally billions of people—may be lactose intolerant. (40) Lactase, the enzyme that digests the milk sugar lactose, is present in infants and young children, presumably to digest breast milk, but many people don’t maintain full lactase function beyond childhood. (41, 42)
Why Eat Dairy, Anyway?
Most iterations of the Paleo diet don’t include dairy. But, if well tolerated, dairy can be a nutritious and beneficial part of a Paleo template. If you’re not eating fish heads, bones, and skin, getting adequate calcium without dairy isn’t easy. Pastured dairy is a great source of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and K2 and is a primary source of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a beneficial, naturally occurring trans fat thought to have anti-cancer properties. (43)
5. IgG- and IgA-Mediated Food Intolerances
Many prominent immunologists argue that some (maybe even most) food intolerances do activate the immune system, but rather than being IgE mediated like a food allergy, they are mediated by IgG and IgA antibodies. IgG- and IgA-mediated food intolerances are thought to be related to increased gut permeability and are often implicated in Crohn’s disease and other GI conditions. (44, 45) If the gut is permeable, food molecules can escape and be detected by the immune system.
Symptoms of these intolerances range from allergy-like reactions such as rashes and asthma to GI symptoms like cramps, constipation, and diarrhea and neurological symptoms such as migraines. (46) Unlike IgE-mediated responses, IgA- and IgG-mediated responses can take days or even months to occur, which makes identifying the culprit(s) more difficult. (47)
How to Overcome a Food Intolerance
People with food allergies generally have them for life, although children sometimes can “outgrow” allergies to milk, egg, wheat, or soy. But you might be able to do something about a food intolerance by healing your gut.
Food intolerance circles back to compromised gut health. In most cases, a food isn’t being digested properly and/or or food molecules are getting past the gut lining when they shouldn’t be able to.
Here are some ways to fix your gut:
Increase stomach acid using supplementation and herbs. Stomach acid is needed for digestion. Although many people think they have too much stomach acid, they may in fact have too little.
Get tested and treated for SIBO or intestinal pathogens to reestablish a healthy gut flora.
Eat sauerkraut and other fermented foods and consider taking a probiotic supplement.
Eat fermentable fiber, as prebiotics can be even more effective than probiotics at improving the microbiota profile.
Drink bone broth. The gelatin, glycine, and glutamine in bone broth all have beneficial effects for the gut.
Should You Get Tested for a Food Intolerance?
The most budget-friendly way to identify food intolerances is a 30-day Paleo reset diet, as I’ve outlined in The Paleo Cure, where the most common offenders (dairy, grains, legumes, sweeteners, processed foods, industrial seed oils, and alcohol) are removed from the diet for 30 or even 60 days and then systematically reintroduced.
If your suspected food intolerances seem linked to severe reactions or conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), IBS, or ulcerative colitis, the Paleo autoimmune protocol (AIP) diet, which goes a step beyond Paleo by also initially removing eggs, nightshades, coffee, nuts, and seeds, might be prudent. In a study published in 2017, 11 of the 15 IBD patients who adopted an AIP diet achieved clinical remission in just six weeks! (48) This further supports the idea that the gut and food intolerances are intricately linked.
But because reactions don’t always appear right away, these rudimentary dietary experiments can be incomplete. The next option would be IgA- and IgG-based blood tests.
A lot of controversy surrounds blood tests that screen for food intolerances based on IgA and IgG levels. Some scientists and immunologists claim that levels of IgG and/or IgA antibodies in the blood merely reveal that a patient has been exposed to certain foods, not that they are necessarily intolerant to these foods. (49, 50, 51) I interviewed Dr. Aristo Vojdani, a respected immunologist with many peer-reviewed papers, on this very subject. We explored some of the reasons why not all food intolerance tests are created equal, such as how testing cooked versus raw foods can yield different outcomes, but not all tests measure both. (52)
It’s clear we need more research surrounding reliable, reproducible, and scientifically founded food intolerance testing. However, food exclusion diets based on IgG and/or IgA antibody testing have provided relief for symptoms of:
Ulcerative colitis (53)
IBD (54)
Migraines (55)
Skin disorders (56)
At my clinic, we use the IgG/IgA tests offered by Cyrex Labs. (Your healthcare provider will have to order this for you as this is not a direct-to-consumer lab.) Array 3X identifies gluten and gluten-related protein intolerances. If a patient has celiac disease or NCGS, they are very likely to have other food sensitivities, and I might follow up with Array 4 or Array 10. (57)

What 26 Years of Processed Foods Does to Your Body
Years Living With Processed Foods
How long have you been living with processed foods?
“Please help me go, please help me go” —a breath prayer I often said aloud for years while sitting in the Loo (i.e. on the toilet)—in the pit of discomfort!
I often just WANTED (and needed) to “go,” but, many times, I not able to “go” for days.
Constipation is Real
Stuck—often times how I felt in my own skin. Stuck in my gut. Constipated. And like my body was at war, in my own skin.
At age 26, even though I ate “healthy” (on paper), something was not right.
Greens? Check.
Sweet potatoes? Check.
Salmon? Check.
Almonds? Check.
Eggs? Check.
Broccoli? Check.
Coconut Butter and Coconut Oil? Check.
I was doing ALL the “right things,” so why did it have to hurt so much?
Answer: Healthy “being” goes far beyond diet alone.
At least once you’ve been enlightened…
Exhibit A: Day 1 Nutrition School (You & I Are NOT Alone)
“Stand up and introduce yourself. What got you interested in studying nutrition?” the teacher said.
One by one, my class of about 40 other aspiring nutrition therapy practitioners had to stand up and give their “elevator speech” as to why we were all sitting upright in the classroom, pen and paper in hand, eager, anxious and beaming with BIG vision, to learn how to save the world one food myth at a time.
As we went around the room sharing our stories, one by one, we also began to realize that…we were not alone.
Many of my fellow classmates were survivors of the processed-food, antibiotic, vaccine, sedentary lifestyle and chronic disease generation, and somehow, had all lived to tell about it.
“My son was diagnosed with Autism, and the doctors told me there was nothing we could do about it except lots of therapies and behavior plans. So I did some research myself, and began to find stories about the brain-gut connection—how food can influence how we think and help kids with Autism. As a family, we started the GAPS diet, and my son, who was non-verbal, said his first words,” Charlotte said.
“I was a vegetarian and vegan for over 15 years, and on the cusp of my 30th birthday, I got sick—really sick,” Lynan said. “My skin was pale, my hair started falling out, my nails were brittle, I was tired all the time, lost my period, and began experiencing bloating around meals all the time. Something wasn’t right. I thought it was something to do with my hormones, or maybe mono, or anemia, so I went to a doctor a friend recommended and he said nothing was wrong with me.
I just needed to eat meat again, telling me, “You know you are doing the same thing to your body that inhumane chicken and beef farms do to their animals—feeding them lots of grains and processed foods, restricting them from all the nutrients their bodies need to thrive. Your body needs balance,” …I was so desperate for anything to feel better, so I gave it a try, and within a matter of months, all my health problems went away. I got my period and energy back, the bloating subsided and I felt better than I had in those 15 years,” Lynan said.
“I got terminal brain cancer. The doctors gave me 2, maybe 3 months, to live, and told me it had spread through every bone in my body and that there was nothing I could do,” Bob said, adding, “But then I looked on the nutrition label of the tube-feeding formula the healthcare company sent me, only to see the worlds ‘Nestle’ and ‘high fructose corn syrup’ on the ‘medicine’ meant to help me get the extra nutrients I needed, and I thought, ‘There’s got to be another way.’ So I decided to start juicing my own food and smoothies for my feeding tube, and just ate real food. Months later, I was completely cancer free and years later, I have a son they never told me I could have and I lived to tell about it. I want to help people,” Bob said.
Mic drop.
Nope. None of us were alone.
What 26 Years of Processed Foods Does to Your Body
We all have a story. Often times, multiple stories. That shape us for the better or the worse. Your stories are written via your life experiences, and chances are, when it comes to your health, you’ve had multiple experiences that have set the stage for where your body (and health markers) are today.
Even if you “eat healthy” and “do all the right things” today, your past experiences paved way for the way you feel (or don’t feel) now.
I’m a Survivor
Hi, I am Lauryn and I am a survivor of the processed food, “take a Tylenol or Tums” (for everything), antibiotic, “drink juice as your water,” frozen broccoli (with cheese sauce), Lean-Cuisines-and-Quest-Bars are convenient (and healthy) generation.
For the first 26 years of my life, my body didn’t see a real food—really.
Sure, I ate Fiber One cereal, not Cookie Crisp, for breakfast. Packed 99% lean turkey on whole wheat bread with pretzels (not chips) for lunch (with the special occasion Pizza Lunchable). Noshed on apple slices (with Peter Pan peanut butter), or string cheese and whole grain Wheat Thins between meals, and I ate a low-fat dinner, including a protein, starch and veggie with a glass of milk most nights for dinner…but even though I was eating “healthy,” (according to Standard American Diet criteria), my body did not see a real food.
Fast forward to my teens and college years, when I began to make my own food choices for myself, I looked to magazines, social media, and Google for advice on what to eat (and not eat), following hundreds of food rule under the sun. If it was deemed “healthy,” or “clean” by Shape or Cosmo, it was “a-ok “with me including: protein bars and protein powders, frozen dinners, raw veggies, tons of nuts and almond butter, egg white omelets, and no carbs, no meats or no fats (depending on the popular trend at the time).
Eating disorder treatment is a whole other can of worms complicating the story. Over the accumulated three years of my life spent in inpatient treatment centers and hospitals, along with the 15 years of meal plans with prescriptions to eat McDonald’s Egg McMuffins and Dairy Queen Blizzard’s, I equally did not see (or eat) a real food—at least not much of it.
The universal theme? My body—namely my gut—didn’t know how to deal with the influx of foods that were difficult to digest. The result? A host of inflammation and imbalances.
Even though, at age 26 I found “real food,” was well beyond my eating disorder and discovered the art of “stressing less,” I had ALOT of “damage” to heal and make up for from the previous 26 years of my life.
In short: How you feel today (or how you will feel tomorrow, or 10-50 years from now) is a result of the choices you made years ago.
Survey Says
I spent the entire 26th year of life, studying nutrition and forming the foundations of my current functional medicine, nutrition and therapy business.
The next year, I found myself in two rigorous functional medicine trainings and sinking my teeth (and brain) into anything that explained more about WHY I felt the way I felt (i.e. constipated and bloated ALL the time), trying to understand WHY it seemed like no doctors could help me just feel good in my own skin. Hey Ally, hope you're having a good day! I just wondered out of interest, you say you drink alcohol maybe 2-3 times per year but how do you decide when those times might be? I think I'm such an all or nothing person haha but I feel I either do something all the time or never at all so wondered what's different for you about those few times a year? Love to you x
Hey love! I appreciate the question. I can say I am definitely not an all-or-nothing person, I’m very type B so I don’t have an addictive tendency either. I am happy to openly and honestly discuss my relationship with alcohol because I believe it’s a very healthy one and I know I have a lot of younger followers, or people just wanting to drink less. Last night I’m assuming you saw I had a glass of champagne in my IG story. I didn’t plan on having a drink, but accepted an offer last minute to go to an exhibition last night, people were celebrating with champagne, my friend knew I had had a tough day so she kindly bought me a glass. I sipped on half of it throughout the night and gave the rest to her.The only time I year I tend to plan on drinking is for my presentation night with my hockey friends. Most of my team is aged 23-55, and it’s a night we all get dressed up and go to a fancy event. I think because alcohol is included in the very expensive ticket price, I feel more inclined to have some and not feel I’m wasting my money. Even then, I probably have two drinks. On my birthday I was in Byron Bay with friends, we decided to have a drink while watching the sunset from a water tower (not in an unsafe way) so I bought a fruity cider and drank about half of it throughout the evening.Besides that, I will sometimes have a drink if someone bought me one when out at camp, or when playing drinking games, but usually it’s just one. Two if it’s the end of summer and I’m feeling wild haha. I just really enjoy the games, and sometimes I can’t get around the not drinking aspect haha. I’m really bad to play beer pong with because I’m a great shot but will never drink the beer so my teammates have to do it. I never drink to the point of losing my inhibitions or control of what I’m doing. I don’t like the taste enough to get to that point, I don’t think it’s worth the money, and I have no desire to make a fool of myself. Drinking alcohol doesn’t make me feel good. It has no health properties, won’t help me heal my thyroid, and leaves you feeling bloated and sluggish the next day. This means I have no desire to consume it more often than a few times a year. If someone is trying to improve their mental health, lose weight or improve their life in any way I don’t think alcohol should be part of it. If you feel you aren’t able to have a balanced approach to drinking, it could be a good idea to take a break from it for a while. With most of my friends, I’m the one who drinks the least. In a way that almost gives them permission to drink less/go out sober, because they know they can have fun with me without it. With a few other friends, they don’t touch a drop of alcohol and haven’t in years, and that’s fine too.In summation: I don’t think it’s healthy, and I think it’s something that should be consumed in moderation with a healthy mindset. So, You Want to Take A Fluoroquinolone Antibiotic?
Every once in a great while I am contacted by someone who, for one reason or another, insists that they must take a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. Because of this quandary, they inquire if there are ways to mitigate the risk of having an adverse event. If this describes you, then this article is for written for you.
Caveats
First, I have to throw in the disclaimer that I am not a doctor and any concerns regarding prescription medication needs to be discussed with your doctor. Second, you also agree to the obligatory disclaimer list on this site.
A Word of Warning
Now that we have the legal caveats out of the way I need to add one of my own. In my opinion, I would do everything I could to NOT take a fluoroquinolone antibiotic and try to opt for a safer alternative.
Obviously, my opinion is biased, but you need to know that taking the fluoroquinolones is much like playing Russian Roulette. Many people when they pull the trigger are fine, but you never know when the hammer is going to contact a loaded chamber and disaster will strike.
Another Warning
One thing is for certain, apart from a few exceptions, most individuals have no way of knowing ahead of time if they are going to have an adverse event to this family of drugs. Also, these drugs are cross-reactive, meaning if you have an adverse event to one member in this family of drugs, you will have an adverse event to another. There have also been cases of cross reaction between the quinolones and certain antimalarials (quinolines) which are chemical cousins so-to -speak. Additionally, once an adverse event ensues, there is no turning back the clock and reversing what has been done.
And Another Warning
Also, if you have already taken previous courses of fluoroquinolone antibiotics and believed you have been fine, cumulative toxicity is another factor that you must consider. Please read the article, Cumulative Toxicity of The Fluoroquinolones. Many people have taken multiple courses of the fluoroquinolones with seemingly no problems, however cumulative toxicity is a very real threat with these drugs that can rear its ugly head.
Hedging Your Bet Against An Adverse Event
Having covered the warnings, I realize that there are many different scenarios that could arise that would lead to your doctor recommending a fluoroquinolone. Far be it from me, or anyone else for that matter, to contradict what your doctor has deemed necessary for your medical care. My goal is to inform.
There are many, many variables that go into a person having an adverse event. Perhaps your genetics and environment make you an unlikely candidate for an adverse event because you are a genetically good metabolizer of chemicals and you live a fairly clean life with low toxic exposure. Also, short doses may well be tolerable for your body if your metabolism is favorable.
So if you are required to take a fluoroquinolone, or have made the personal choice to take a fluoroquinolone and have been educating in the risk/reward ratio, there are certain steps you can consider during a treatment to reduce the risk (not eliminate) of an adverse event.
1 Adjusting the treatment
Make sure that the dose is adjusted according to your weight. In other words, makes sure the doctor is not giving you a dose that is strong enough to treat an elephant. We have had many reports of people receiving much larger doses than would normally be deemed correct for their weight. Bottom line, why take more than what is needed (1).
2Take Magnesium
There is good scientific literature that Magnesium (or the lack thereof) can set the stage for an adverse event. Conversely, magnesium taken at the same time as taking a fluoroquinolone, interferes with the absorption. So, to keep your intracellular magnesium levels optimized and to avoid interfering with the fluoroquinolone dose, take magnesium at a separate time during the day. Many people in our society are deficient on magnesium and this is believed to play a part in adverse events in some people, plus magnesium has a protective role over many tissues (2).
3Drink Water During Treatment
It helps to maintain an adequate hydration of the tissues and facilitate the elimination of the drug and the metabolites through the kidneys, so drink plenty of water to remain properly hydrated.
4Avoid Steroids
Steroid use while taking fluoroquinolones is contraindicated. In other words, do not take any steroids during the treatment with the quinolone family of antibiotics, unless your doctor has deemed it completely necessary. There is research literature and plenty of anecdotal information that steroids dramatically increase the risk of adverse events. I understand that in certain circumstances your physician may have determined that taking a steroid while taking a fluoroquinolone is necessary (combined therapy). If this is the case, this advice is not to contradict your doctor’s medical advice. So, disregard this advice if you cannot avoid steroids but maybe discuss this concern with your doctor (4).
5Avoid Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs)
They amplify the negative effects of fluoroquinolones, specially the risk of central nervous system occurrences, and neuropathies. Many people unwittingly take these two together and combining these two dramatically increases the risk of an adverse event (5). You can also click here to read about Dr. Mark Noble of the University of Rochester, NY who had disturbing findings when researching Levaquin and NSAIDS.
6Watch for other Drug Interactions
Some drugs cause dangerous interactions with quinolones. All are included in the package insert so read the insert, check with a reputable website, or check with your pharmacist. There is quite a great chance that your doctor does not know or has not read it, seriously. (Levaquin, Cipro)
7Avoid Grapefruit
Grapefruit inhibits the actions of the liver enzymes that degrade the fluoroquinolones, so these antibiotics can reach very high concentrations in the blood. As a good preventive measure, eliminate grapefruit from your life, especially if you take other drugs on a regular basis.
8Watch Out for the Effects of Coffee (Caffeine)
Caffeine is a canary in a coal mine forewarning of danger. If caffeine starts to cause you problems such as restlessness, nervousness, disturbed sleep, etc… then it is time to consider that your liver is becoming overwhelmed by the fluoroquinolone you are taking. Some people have used this poor man’s test: Drink some coffee during treatment and watching out for changes. This supposes that you drank coffee before the treatment and were familiar with the normal effects that caffeine has on your body.
9Ask for Some Tests During Treatment (Especially Long Treatments)
Although what would consider long treatments is kind of subjective, for sake of discussion we will consider in this instance, those that last more than two weeks. You could discuss concerns with your doctor and ask for the normal tests plus the following:
Liver panel, especially bilirubin
Pancreas panel
Muscular enzymes (CPK, aldolase)
Immunological markers (sedimentation rate and ANA specially, and also IgE to the drug)
Cholesterol and triglycerides
Coenzyme Q10
Thyroid panel, TSH, free T3, free T4, PTH
Obviously not all doctors would be copacetic to allowing such tests to be run during the course of treatment, but in an ideal world it would be wise to monitor for subtle (and not so subtle) changes to your metabolism that would indicate a larger problem.
10Avoid Strong Sunlight (Ultraviolet Radiation)
Wear appropriate clothing and sunglasses to protect yourself against the photocarcinogenic action of fluoroquinolones.
11Perform Daily Provoking Tests
For example, do some repetitions of raising a weight like a box with the tips of your toes (resting the heels on the floor), or raising a bottle of water with the arm extended. If in a few days a strong tendinitis develops, it is time to bring the concern to stop the fluoroquinolone treatment to your doctor, right away.
Detoxing – After the Fact, Yet Another Warning
In order to bring complete gravity to the decision to take a fluoroquinolone antibiotic I would be remiss if I did not bring up one more point. I have also had people contact me who have taken a fluoroquinolone and started having an adverse event or a negative set of symptoms. They have contacted their doctor and he/she has told them to stop the medication and switch to something else. Their next question is, “how do I get the fluoroquinolone out of my system?”, “Can I detox it out?” Well unfortunately the answer is no.
While it is true that there are several substances that can interfere with the absorption of fluoroquinolones such as such as aluminum, magnesium, calcium, iron, and zinc (6), they must be present while the drug is being taken, which would defeat the purpose if you were taking it for its antibiotic properties. There is nothing that I am aware of that can chelate fluoroquinolones, or their metabolites, from the body if you want them removed in haste.
Fluoroquinolones are widely distributed throughout the body with high tissue penetration; that is what they do, and that is what the are good at. They are a synthetic product that does not ‘detox,’ at least according to the detoxing paradigms of both allopathic or alternative medicine. Since the fluoroquinolones are manly eliminated by the renal route (non-renal routes to a much lesser extent), staying well hydrated as to flush the remaining drug and its metabolites our of the body though the natural process of elimination, is about the only thing you can do, besides wait and see.
Conclusion
Obviously if you got this far you certainly read my warnings near the beginning of this article, so there is no reason to rehash them again. The main purpose of this website is to inform. Many people in our world today do not have enough information to make informed decisions when taking pharmaceuticals. It is best to have all the information available so that it spurs meaningful discussions with your doctor about the risk/rewards and safer alternatives.
The choice to take or not no take a fluoroquinolone antibiotic is a personal decision that is based on many factors. I, nor anyone else, can make the decision for you. The only thing I can do is to tell you that many, many people have taken these drugs and have regretted the decision. Many were not informed beforehand. Knowledge is power, use it wisely.

Food Allergy vs. Food Intolerance: Why the Difference Matters
Although we have a lot to learn about food intolerances, ever-growing research proves that they aren’t psychological or make-believe. Read on to learn the differences between a true food allergy and a food intolerance, some examples of common food intolerances, and how healing your gut can, in some cases, alleviate the problem.

Food Allergy vs. Food Intolerance—They’re Not the Same
Food allergies are on the rise, especially in children:
Between 1997 and 2011 food allergies increased by 50 percent in American children (1)
Today, around 1 in 13 children and 1 in 25 adults in the United States suffer from a life-threatening food allergy (2)
In a true food allergy, a person’s immune system produces immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies in response to her consumption of a particular food. These IgE antibodies initiate a cascade of events that can affect the skin (hives), the respiratory tract (wheezing), and/or the GI tract (vomiting).
In severe anaphylactic cases, an allergic reaction can be life threatening if not treated immediately with epinephrine.
Even more common than food allergies, food intolerances are estimated to affect up to 20 percent of the population in industrialized countries. (3, 4, 5) Food intolerances are not IgE mediated and are thought to be caused by specific enzyme deficiencies, impaired food absorption, and other GI issues. (6) In many cases, other immunoglobulin antibody responses may also be involved (IgA and IgG)—but more on that later.
Food intolerances generally don’t trigger the dramatic or immediate reactions associated with food allergies, but they’re every bit as real, with varied symptoms like nausea, vomiting, respiratory problems, brain fogginess, and skin reactions such as eczema.
If unmanaged, food intolerances can have serious health consequences too. If you don’t know you have a food intolerance and keep eating the offending food(s), you increase your risk of developing an autoimmune disease, neurological disorders, and more. (7, 8, 9, 10)
Five Common Food Intolerances
Let’s explore some common food intolerances that affect millions of people.
1. Celiac Disease
Often confused with a wheat allergy, celiac disease (CD) is not an allergy but rather an autoimmune disease, characterized by an inflammatory immune response to wheat gluten, rye, barley, and related proteins. Affecting 1 to 5 percent of Americans, CD usually manifests as GI disturbances like abdominal pain and diarrhea, but many patients with CD have no GI symptoms and may not even know they have it. (11, 12)
These atypical, or “silent,” forms of CD are far from harmless. Silent CD is associated with higher rates of iron deficiency, anemia, osteoporosis, neurological symptoms, and a nearly fourfold increase in the risk of death. (13, 14)
2. Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance
CD screening only tests for antibodies to a few components found in gluten, but people can react to many other components of wheat and gluten in a condition called non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). (15, 16, 17, 18, 19) No robust diagnosis yet exists for NCGS. The best clinical description is: “a reaction to gluten that resolves when gluten is removed from the diet, and CD and allergy have been ruled out.” (20)
Despite its inexact diagnosis, NCGS is real—and studies are proving it. Double-blind, placebo-controlled trials indicate that a subset of people who do not have CD or a wheat allergy can and do indeed react horribly to gluten when they don’t know whether they are being given gluten or not. (21, 22, 23)
Up to one in 20 Americans may have NCGS, which can affect the brain, skin, endocrine system, stomach, liver, blood vessels, and more. NCGS can produce a wide range of symptoms: (24, 25, 26)
Bloating
Abdominal pain
Gas and related pain
Diarrhea
Constipation
Tiredness
Headache
Anxiety
Foggy mind
Eczema
Chronic fatigue
Joint and muscle pain
Asthma
Depression
Unfortunately, many health professionals still don’t take NCGS seriously, which does a huge disservice to those suffering. In fact, NCGS, especially if undiagnosed, can be even more serious than CD. Epithelial damage to the gut, systemic immune activation, and systemic inflammation are all linked to NCGS. (27) By continuing to eat gluten, patients with NCGS are at higher risk of developing arthritis, thyroiditis, multiple sclerosis, ataxia, diabetes, and even amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease). (28, 29, 30, 31)
3. FODMAP Intolerance
Sometimes, people who think they are sensitive to gluten may actually be intolerant to FODMAPs, or fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols. FODMAPs, a type of carbohydrate, are found in many common foods besides wheat, including:
High-fructose fruits
Asparagus
Brussels sprouts
Garlic
Onions
In the case of FODMAP intolerance, the GI tract isn’t fully digesting and absorbing these short-chain carbs, which are then fermented by gut bacteria, creating gas and increasing fluid movement into the large bowel. (32)
FODMAP intolerance is common in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). By adhering to a low-FODMAP diet, up to 75 percent of people have relief from functional gut disorder symptoms, especially IBS. (33, 34, 35, 36, 37). However, a low-FODMAP diet is not advisable long term because it can decrease microbial diversity and density of beneficial bacterial species. (38, 39)
4. Lactose Intolerance
Up to 65 percent of the world’s population—literally billions of people—may be lactose intolerant. (40) Lactase, the enzyme that digests the milk sugar lactose, is present in infants and young children, presumably to digest breast milk, but many people don’t maintain full lactase function beyond childhood. (41, 42)
Why Eat Dairy, Anyway?
Most iterations of the Paleo diet don’t include dairy. But, if well tolerated, dairy can be a nutritious and beneficial part of a Paleo template. If you’re not eating fish heads, bones, and skin, getting adequate calcium without dairy isn’t easy. Pastured dairy is a great source of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and K2 and is a primary source of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a beneficial, naturally occurring trans fat thought to have anti-cancer properties. (43)
5. IgG- and IgA-Mediated Food Intolerances
Many prominent immunologists argue that some (maybe even most) food intolerances do activate the immune system, but rather than being IgE mediated like a food allergy, they are mediated by IgG and IgA antibodies. IgG- and IgA-mediated food intolerances are thought to be related to increased gut permeability and are often implicated in Crohn’s disease and other GI conditions. (44, 45) If the gut is permeable, food molecules can escape and be detected by the immune system.
Symptoms of these intolerances range from allergy-like reactions such as rashes and asthma to GI symptoms like cramps, constipation, and diarrhea and neurological symptoms such as migraines. (46) Unlike IgE-mediated responses, IgA- and IgG-mediated responses can take days or even months to occur, which makes identifying the culprit(s) more difficult. (47)
How to Overcome a Food Intolerance
People with food allergies generally have them for life, although children sometimes can “outgrow” allergies to milk, egg, wheat, or soy. But you might be able to do something about a food intolerance by healing your gut.
Food intolerance circles back to compromised gut health. In most cases, a food isn’t being digested properly and/or or food molecules are getting past the gut lining when they shouldn’t be able to.
Here are some ways to fix your gut:
Increase stomach acid using supplementation and herbs. Stomach acid is needed for digestion. Although many people think they have too much stomach acid, they may in fact have too little.
Get tested and treated for SIBO or intestinal pathogens to reestablish a healthy gut flora.
Eat sauerkraut and other fermented foods and consider taking a probiotic supplement.
Eat fermentable fiber, as prebiotics can be even more effective than probiotics at improving the microbiota profile.
Drink bone broth. The gelatin, glycine, and glutamine in bone broth all have beneficial effects for the gut.
Should You Get Tested for a Food Intolerance?
The most budget-friendly way to identify food intolerances is a 30-day Paleo reset diet, as I’ve outlined in The Paleo Cure, where the most common offenders (dairy, grains, legumes, sweeteners, processed foods, industrial seed oils, and alcohol) are removed from the diet for 30 or even 60 days and then systematically reintroduced.
If your suspected food intolerances seem linked to severe reactions or conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), IBS, or ulcerative colitis, the Paleo autoimmune protocol (AIP) diet, which goes a step beyond Paleo by also initially removing eggs, nightshades, coffee, nuts, and seeds, might be prudent. In a study published in 2017, 11 of the 15 IBD patients who adopted an AIP diet achieved clinical remission in just six weeks! (48) This further supports the idea that the gut and food intolerances are intricately linked.
But because reactions don’t always appear right away, these rudimentary dietary experiments can be incomplete. The next option would be IgA- and IgG-based blood tests.
A lot of controversy surrounds blood tests that screen for food intolerances based on IgA and IgG levels. Some scientists and immunologists claim that levels of IgG and/or IgA antibodies in the blood merely reveal that a patient has been exposed to certain foods, not that they are necessarily intolerant to these foods. (49, 50, 51) I interviewed Dr. Aristo Vojdani, a respected immunologist with many peer-reviewed papers, on this very subject. We explored some of the reasons why not all food intolerance tests are created equal, such as how testing cooked versus raw foods can yield different outcomes, but not all tests measure both. (52)
It’s clear we need more research surrounding reliable, reproducible, and scientifically founded food intolerance testing. However, food exclusion diets based on IgG and/or IgA antibody testing have provided relief for symptoms of:
Ulcerative colitis (53)
IBD (54)
Migraines (55)
Skin disorders (56)
At my clinic, we use the IgG/IgA tests offered by Cyrex Labs. (Your healthcare provider will have to order this for you as this is not a direct-to-consumer lab.) Array 3X identifies gluten and gluten-related protein intolerances. If a patient has celiac disease or NCGS, they are very likely to have other food sensitivities, and I might follow up with Array 4 or Array 10. (57)

Most iterations of the Paleo diet don’t include dairy. But, if well tolerated, dairy can be a nutritious and beneficial part of a Paleo template. If you’re not eating fish heads, bones, and skin, getting adequate calcium without dairy isn’t easy. Pastured dairy is a great source of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and K2 and is a primary source of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a beneficial, naturally occurring trans fat thought to have anti-cancer properties. Many prominent immunologists argue that some (maybe even most) food intolerances do activate the immune system, but rather than being IgE mediated like a food allergy, they are mediated by IgG and IgA antibodies. IgG- and IgA-mediated food intolerances are thought to be related to increased gut permeability and are often implicated in Crohn’s disease and other GI conditions. (44, 45) If the gut is permeable, food molecules can escape and be detected by the immune system.
Symptoms of these intolerances range from allergy-like reactions such as rashes and asthma to GI symptoms like cramps, constipation, and diarrhea and neurological symptoms such as migraines. (46) Unlike IgE-mediated responses, IgA- and IgG-mediated responses can take days or even months to occur, which makes identifying the culprit(s) more difficult. (47)
How to Overcome a Food Intolerance
People with food allergies generally have them for life, although children sometimes can “outgrow” allergies to milk, egg, wheat, or soy. But you might be able to do something about a food intolerance by healing your gut.
Food intolerance circles back to compromised gut health. In most cases, a food isn’t being digested properly and/or or food molecules are getting past the gut lining when they shouldn’t be able to.
Here are some ways to fix your gut:
Increase stomach acid using supplementation and herbs. Stomach acid is needed for digestion. Although many people think they have too much stomach acid, they may in fact have too little.
Get tested and treated for SIBO or intestinal pathogens to reestablish a healthy gut flora.
Eat sauerkraut and other fermented foods and consider taking a probiotic supplement.
Eat fermentable fiber, as prebiotics can be even more effective than probiotics at improving the microbiota profile.
Drink bone broth. The gelatin, glycine, and glutamine in bone broth all have beneficial effects for the gut.
Should You Get Tested for a Food Intolerance?
The most budget-friendly way to identify food intolerances is a 30-day Paleo reset diet, as I’ve outlined in The Paleo Cure, where the most common offenders (dairy, grains, legumes, sweeteners, processed foods, industrial seed oils, and alcohol) are removed from the diet for 30 or even 60 days and then systematically reintroduced.
If your suspected food intolerances seem linked to severe reactions or conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), IBS, or ulcerative colitis, the Paleo autoimmune protocol (AIP) diet, which goes a step beyond Paleo by also initially removing eggs, nightshades, coffee, nuts, and seeds, might be prudent. In a study published in 2017, 11 of the 15 IBD patients who adopted an AIP diet achieved clinical remission in just six weeks! (48) This further supports the idea that the gut and food intolerances are intricately linked.
But because reactions don’t always appear right away, these rudimentary dietary experiments can be incomplete. The next option would be IgA- and IgG-based blood tests.
A lot of controversy surrounds blood tests that screen for food intolerances based on IgA and IgG levels. Some scientists and immunologists claim that levels of IgG and/or IgA antibodies in the blood merely reveal that a patient has been exposed to certain foods, not that they are necessarily intolerant to these foods. (49, 50, 51) I interviewed Dr. Aristo Vojdani, a respected immunologist with many peer-reviewed papers, on this very subject. We explored some of the reasons why not all food intolerance tests are created equal, such as how testing cooked versus raw foods can yield different outcomes, but not all tests measure both. (52)
It’s clear we need more research surrounding reliable, reproducible, and scientifically founded food intolerance testing. However, food exclusion diets based on IgG and/or IgA antibody testing have provided relief for symptoms of:

Food Allergy vs. Food Intolerance—They’re Not the Same
Food allergies are on the rise, especially in children:
Between 1997 and 2011 food allergies increased by 50 percent in American children (1)
Today, around 1 in 13 children and 1 in 25 adults in the United States suffer from a life-threatening food allergy (2)
In a true food allergy, a person’s immune system produces immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies in response to her consumption of a particular food. These IgE antibodies initiate a cascade of events that can affect the skin (hives), the respiratory tract (wheezing), and/or the GI tract (vomiting).

Even more common than food allergies, food intolerances are estimated to affect up to 20 percent of the population in industrialized countries. (3, 4, 5) Food intolerances are not IgE mediated and are thought to be caused by specific enzyme deficiencies, impaired food absorption, and other GI issues. (6) In many cases, other immunoglobulin antibody responses may also be involved (IgA and IgG)—but more on that later.
Food intolerances generally don’t trigger the dramatic or immediate reactions associated with food allergies, but they’re every bit as real, with varied symptoms like nausea, vomiting, respiratory problems, brain fogginess, and skin reactions such as eczema.
If unmanaged, food intolerances can have serious health consequences too. If you don’t know you have a food intolerance and keep eating the offending food(s), you increase your risk of developing an autoimmune disease, neurological disorders, and more. (7, 8, 9, 10)
Five Common Food Intolerances
Let’s explore some common food intolerances that affect millions of people.
1. Celiac Disease
Often confused with a wheat allergy, celiac disease (CD) is not an allergy but rather an autoimmune disease, characterized by an inflammatory immune response to wheat gluten, rye, barley, and related proteins. Affecting 1 to 5 percent of Americans, CD usually manifests as GI disturbances like abdominal pain and diarrhea, but many patients with CD have no GI symptoms and may not even know they have it. (11, 12)
These atypical, or “silent,” forms of CD are far from harmless. Silent CD is associated with higher rates of iron deficiency, anemia, osteoporosis, neurological symptoms, and a nearly fourfold increase in the risk of death. (13, 14)
2. Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance
CD screening only tests for antibodies to a few components found in gluten, but people can react to many other components of wheat and gluten in a condition called non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS). (15, 16, 17, 18, 19) No robust diagnosis yet exists for NCGS. The best clinical description is: “a reaction to gluten that resolves when gluten is removed from the diet, and CD and allergy have been ruled out.” (20)
Despite its inexact diagnosis, NCGS is real—and studies are proving it. Double-blind, placebo-controlled trials indicate that a subset of people who do not have CD or a wheat allergy can and do indeed react horribly to gluten when they don’t know whether they are being given gluten or not. (21, 22, 23)
Up to one in 20 Americans may have NCGS, which can affect the brain, skin, endocrine system, stomach, liver, blood vessels, and more. NCGS can produce a wide range of symptoms: (24, 25, 26)

Epithelial damage to the gut, systemic immune activation, and systemic inflammation are all linked to NCGS. (27) By continuing to eat gluten, patients with NCGS are at higher risk of developing arthritis, thyroiditis, multiple sclerosis, ataxia, diabetes, and even amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease). What 26 Years of Processed Foods Does to Your Body
Years Living With Processed Foods
How long have you been living with processed foods?
“Please help me go, please help me go” —a breath prayer I often said aloud for years while sitting in the Loo (i.e. on the toilet)—in the pit of discomfort!
I often just WANTED (and needed) to “go,” but, many times, I not able to “go” for days.
Constipation is Real
Stuck—often times how I felt in my own skin. Stuck in my gut. Constipated. And like my body was at war, in my own skin.
At age 26, even though I ate “healthy” (on paper), something was not right.
Greens? Check.
Sweet potatoes? Check.
Salmon? Check.
Almonds? Check.
Eggs? Check.
Broccoli? Check.
Coconut Butter and Coconut Oil? Check.
I was doing ALL the “right things,” so why did it have to hurt so much?
Answer: Healthy “being” goes far beyond diet alone.

Exhibit A: Day 1 Nutrition School (You & I Are NOT Alone)
“Stand up and introduce yourself. What got you interested in studying nutrition?” the teacher said.
One by one, my class of about 40 other aspiring nutrition therapy practitioners had to stand up and give their “elevator speech” as to why we were all sitting upright in the classroom, pen and paper in hand, eager, anxious and beaming with BIG vision, to learn how to save the world one food myth at a time.
As we went around the room sharing our stories, one by one, we also began to realize that…we were not alone.
Many of my fellow classmates were survivors of the processed-food, antibiotic, vaccine, sedentary lifestyle and chronic disease generation, and somehow, had all lived to tell about it.
“My son was diagnosed with Autism, and the doctors told me there was nothing we could do about it except lots of therapies and behavior plans. So I did some research myself, and began to find stories about the brain-gut connection—how food can influence how we think and help kids with Autism. As a family, we started the GAPS diet, and my son, who was non-verbal, said his first words,” Charlotte said.
“I was a vegetarian and vegan for over 15 years, and on the cusp of my 30th birthday, I got sick—really sick,” Lynan said. “My skin was pale, my hair started falling out, my nails were brittle, I was tired all the time, lost my period, and began experiencing bloating around meals all the time. Something wasn’t right. I thought it was something to do with my hormones, or maybe mono, or anemia, so I went to a doctor a friend recommended and he said nothing was wrong with me.
I just needed to eat meat again, telling me, “You know you are doing the same thing to your body that inhumane chicken and beef farms do to their animals—feeding them lots of grains and processed foods, restricting them from all the nutrients their bodies need to thrive. Your body needs balance,” …I was so desperate for anything to feel better, so I gave it a try, and within a matter of months, all my health problems went away. I got my period and energy back, the bloating subsided and I felt better than I had in those 15 years,” Lynan said.
“I got terminal brain cancer. The doctors gave me 2, maybe 3 months, to live, and told me it had spread through every bone in my body and that there was nothing I could do,” Bob said, adding, “But then I looked on the nutrition label of the tube-feeding formula the healthcare company sent me, only to see the worlds ‘Nestle’ and ‘high fructose corn syrup’ on the ‘medicine’ meant to help me get the extra nutrients I needed, and I thought, ‘There’s got to be another way.’ So I decided to start juicing my own food and smoothies for my feeding tube, and just ate real food. Months later, I was completely cancer free and years later, I have a son they never told me I could have and I lived to tell about it. I want to help people,” Bob said.
Mic drop.
Nope. None of us were alone.
What 26 Years of Processed Foods Does to Your Body
We all have a story. Often times, multiple stories. That shape us for the better or the worse. Your stories are written via your life experiences, and chances are, when it comes to your health, you’ve had multiple experiences that have set the stage for where your body (and health markers) are today.
Even if you “eat healthy” and “do all the right things” today, your past experiences paved way for the way you feel (or don’t feel) now.
I’m a Survivor
Hi, I am Lauryn and I am a survivor of the processed food, “take a Tylenol or Tums” (for everything), antibiotic, “drink juice as your water,” frozen broccoli (with cheese sauce), Lean-Cuisines-and-Quest-Bars are convenient (and healthy) generation.
For the first 26 years of my life, my body didn’t see a real food—really.
Sure, I ate Fiber One cereal, not Cookie Crisp, for breakfast. Packed 99% lean turkey on whole wheat bread with pretzels (not chips) for lunch (with the special occasion Pizza Lunchable). Noshed on apple slices (with Peter Pan peanut butter), or string cheese and whole grain Wheat Thins between meals, and I ate a low-fat dinner, including a protein, starch and veggie with a glass of milk most nights for dinner…but even though I was eating “healthy,” (according to Standard American Diet criteria), my body did not see a real food.
Fast forward to my teens and college years, when I began to make my own food choices for myself, I looked to magazines, social media, and Google for advice on what to eat (and not eat), following hundreds of food rule under the sun. If it was deemed “healthy,” or “clean” by Shape or Cosmo, it was “a-ok “with me including: protein bars and protein powders, frozen dinners, raw veggies, tons of nuts and almond butter, egg white omelets, and no carbs, no meats or no fats (depending on the popular trend at the time).
Eating disorder treatment is a whole other can of worms complicating the story. Over the accumulated three years of my life spent in inpatient treatment centers and hospitals, along with the 15 years of meal plans with prescriptions to eat McDonald’s Egg McMuffins and Dairy Queen Blizzard’s, I equally did not see (or eat) a real food—at least not much of it.
The universal theme? My body—namely my gut—didn’t know how to deal with the influx of foods that were difficult to digest. The result? A host of inflammation and imbalances.
Even though, at age 26 I found “real food,” was well beyond my eating disorder and discovered the art of “stressing less,” I had ALOT of “damage” to heal and make up for from the previous 26 years of my life.
In short: How you feel today (or how you will feel tomorrow, or 10-50 years from now) is a result of the choices you made years ago.
Survey Says
I spent the entire 26th year of life, studying nutrition and forming the foundations of my current functional medicine, nutrition and therapy business.
The next year, I found myself in two rigorous functional medicine trainings and sinking my teeth (and brain) into anything that explained more about WHY I felt the way I felt (i.e. constipated and bloated ALL the time), trying to understand WHY it seemed like no doctors could help me just feel good in my own skin.
