Advice on how to achieve aesthetically pleasing gameplay photos!

I made this post earlier today and people were interested in the comments! Which made me more excited to make this post~

this is just some advice from me! this isnt a tutorial or anything of that sort, but I will be linking some things that could be helpful for editing gameplay! :D

First things first, I want to say that I use a graphics overhaul, lighting mods check my resources page for what reshade i use if ur interested.

Now we can move on to the advice!

I love the simple style of gameplay editing so much, but for me I love creating an ambience with my posts and put the audience inside of my gameplay. I also enjoy storytelling with gameplay more than just the "usual" gameplay post (when it comes to me). I am currently playing the globetrotter challenge with my sim Daichi. I really went all out with the editing for that gameplay. For this one its very much a virtual collage of my sim doing things. Trying new things and getting inspired by others is always fun and cool! Remember when u do take inspo: link to the inspiration and @ the simmer that inspired u!!

In my other save (my cozy save) I also take creative liberties there.

its more of a cozy vibe & silent story-telling (storytelling w/o the dialogue). for my cozy save i take inspiration from @/stellarfalls. er gameplay really helped me find my niche thing in the way i play the game tbh!

Angles/Screenshots

When you're taking your screenshots, angles are important. Depending on the shot, you're putting emphasis on a specific thing. This post is very helpful and talks about different types of angles/shots and what they mean. Check it out especially if you want to play around with the way you take screenshots!

Reshade

If I want to create a moody or dreamy ambience I can use reshade. Looking for a reshade that will fit the overall vibe is a must or you can make your own~

i know not everyone is able to use reshade because they're not on windows. I highly recommend using photoshop actions to create that ambience you're looking for.

*These can be used in photopea, but it cant read topaz clean. If you want to achieve topaz clean in photopea, check this post out! just something i'd like to add in case people are new to all of this + dont use photoshop. Lastly, I want to say if you decide to edit photos on photopea, it does tend to crash if you upload a big number of photos and slows down. I usually upload like 6 or 8 and then save and repeat the process. Its kinda annoying, but ive been using photopea for a while now so im used to it. My mac users, use early-grapes butter action if you want things to look cleaner and less harsh!! + the other ps actions down below. I used these a lot when I was a mac user. Of course, that comes with extra steps, but I feel its worth it in the end.

Templates!

I loveeeeeee templates so much!! theres so many out there to use for gameplay. It really adds more to gameplay posts! This can be dust/dirt, film burn, that cute camera template etc etc. templates are really fun to use and play around with~

I usually go on deviantart to find templates to use! if you want to check out my deviantart account you can find it here! I favorite a lot of things I can use for gameplay screenies.

Gifs

making gifs is cool because it brings the gameplay "to life" ~

EZgif is a free website that converts videos to gifs. You'll need a recording program like OBS (which is also free).

i like making gifs when i want to capture a (cute) moment (kisses, hugs, cooking etc etc). Its also cool to capture the weather in game like when its snowing or raining.

Little details

Some people really go all out on editing gameplay posts like adding hair strands and adding more details to sims faces (catchlights, tears, blushing, etc). You dont really have to do this, but I want to mention it anyways! I want to try doing this at some point because I enjoy editing my gameplay posts/photos in general and adding tiny details is fun to me lol. It adds realism to posts, but it isnt necessary!

Yessss HCs of HCs is the joy of fandom, inspiration flowing. I really love and need to bask in the idea of Mike having a little group of new friends in his post-Hawkins, adult life. Because he's the type who could easily slip into solitude, or cling to just their partner, but I don't want that for him. Gotta envision a Mike with a support group and a friend group with the Party now split to different cities, etc. Still in touch, but it's different now. I like Mike because he's not easy to shove into a this-or-that, not everyone is so easily "introverted or extroverted" and he's a fun one to think about it. Comfortable, he's so charismatic!! Are these college friends, work friends? Maybe both. I like to envisioned he got an entry level kinda shit job at some publishing company right outta college, maybe a pal from school also got hired there, too, and they form a little group with some guys.

This got out of hand, the rest of this lengthy ramble under the cut:

Nerdy go-getter writer types, vastly differing personalities but it's a squad. Young twenty somethings in the city. Will has his art friends, Mike has this group. Mutual friends in common, too, but it's super healthy to also maintain your own things. I think they do eventually meet Will though, as time goes on. The college buddy already knows about Will, but with the new group? Mike's gotta test the waters, subtly discover vibes. Saying partner is still such a flag. It's the 90s but it's still only the 90s. He really likes these guys. I like to think in some way the college buddy makes some gay-positive comment at one point, which makes Mike's blood run cold at first, initial panic over the group's reaction, he meets his friend's eyes first out of fear but appreciation for taking the initiative and burden. But it's fine. Nothing makes it seem like the others are unsafe. Mike eventually jokes when one of the guys is trying to pick up girls at a bar, confirming he's spoken for. References his partner. Boyfriend is one of his favorite words but it's a terrifying word. But the implication is made, the groundwork laid.

Drinking one night, they're all a little lit up, laughing and venting about work. Hanging at the pool table, beer bottles filling the high top nearby. Mike on some ramble, slipping into waxing poetic about Will this, Will that. "Who's Will?" "His partner. Will's the best. Oh." His college buddy wants to sink into the floor, he fucked up, he fucked up big time. Mike breezes by with a dreamy "Yeah, Will's the best, the other day yap yap yap..." and all is fine, it's a natural addition to the conversation. Floodgates opened. The weight has left his shoulders. When they hang out and one of the guys talks about his girl, Mike adds an anecdote about his boy. Mike talks about Will's art expo, Mike mentions some movie he and Will saw together, Mike invites the guys over to watch some sports thing at his place one Saturday night. He could care less about the game, what sport is it again?

But he and Will have a really nice TV they splurged on for video gaming, and everyone gathers at their apartment for the first time instead of elbowing into drunks at the shitty sports bar they typically prefer. At home, totally comfortable. Mike initially the tiniest bit hesitant, but Will was so excited to finally meet Mike's friends. He'd been invited out to their drinking nights a few times, but Will hadn't yet taken Mike up on the offer, not wanting to intrude despite Mike insisting he'd want him there. That's Mike's thing. It's ok. But this is their apartment, their home. Will's having fun playing bartender, he mixes a mean drink, impresses one of the guys when he goes shot for shot with him at one point. Mike giggling and bright and beaming at the scene as Will makes tossing back liquor look graceful rather than sloppy like his pal. He wipes his mouth on the back of his hand with a wink towards Mike, such a weak man when it comes to the sort of expression Will is sending him. Something exciting happens in the game. The group's raucous attention turns back to the screen. Will feigns interest but Mike's draped over him, hugging him from behind with his chin on Will's shoulder as Will braces to watch with palms gripping the couch, also pretending to care about sports.

They're both a little unsteady on their feet. Secure with each other even just feet away from the display of macho jubilation in the living room, funny to them because these guys are also all just such nerds too for the most part - young and hungry writers vying for a promotion or a big break, trying to make it in the industry, in the city, searching for connections and love and companionship all the same. Geeking out over the gaming systems neatly organized under the TV console, eager to dig into that once the football game is over. Including Will in conversation all the while and Mike really, really likes his friends.

Mike leads Will over to the big plush armchair diagonal in the living room, pushed up against the wall. It's so unhesitant and natural to fall into the chair like they often do, Mike half up on the armrest while Will curls up next to him, head tucked up under Mike's neck while Mike's got one arm loose around his waist, the other hand brandishing a beer. He's gesturing wildly with his hand as he rambles on about something in the game that he does not fucking understand while the other guys banter back. Will steadies his arm when the beer threatens to spill over them both. They're all laughing. One of the guys bemoans missing his girlfriend, says maybe he'll bring her next game since she kinda digs football, too, and their TV at home is garbage and she hates going to the bar. Will tells him to definitely bring her, tells everyone they should bring their partners if they have someone, they'll make it a whole thing in a few weeks for the Superbowl. His voice stutters on partner, despite the fact that he's currently sitting in a man's lap, unable to hide or deny. It's still an adjustment when unfamiliar eyes and ears are on him, after all this time. But, he has to be brave. He likes being brave when he can.

Everyone's down for the plan. He looks up at Mike, wincing a little, hoping he didn't overstep. He gets one of Mike's stunning, soft smiles that abates his worry. Mike hugs him closer, kisses the top of Will's soft brown hair that's tickling his nose. He's so damn happy. Both of them are. ❤️

this is such a big biiiig question. i have a lot of talented moots, and i have quite a few of their fics that i think about all the time. like @neptuneblue ‘cupid’s quiver’ and @twentyfivemiceinatrenchcoat ‘sometimes i long to eat you up’. any of @dollsuguru snippets i greedily scoff too lol. @pinknipszz heian era sukuna drabbles are little gemstones, the vibes are immaculate. ooo i also think of @bungalowbear ‘wolves of tokyo’ too, again because, VIBES!!

however my top one that takes up a lot of my thoughts is the series ‘the odyssey’ by @lovenona . i really take my hat off to this author and the series for getting me back into writing. the story is so brilliantly crafted, and the writing is absolutely astonishing and dreamy. adele took my brain to another world and needs to win a fanfic award ASAPPPP!

Talaney's personality isn't super hyper and loud- but she's still very enthusiastic! She's gotta be being a Cheerleader and all. She's very soft spoken and sweet which is why she's so good with kids and easy to approach. Idk how else to describe her personality other than Disney Princesses like Snow White or Aurora- very curious and day dreamy. She's not goofy or silly... At least not on purpose LOL. She gives off the vibes of an old vintage movie, like Bambie and Fox and The Hound- Vixey is actually a pretty good example of what she acts like! Or maybe Lady from Lady and the Tramp.

Of course she can be loud and excitable when she's in her own element- and that's when she's around family and parties with the red-necks of Hawkins, but even then she's still shy little Talaney, she just likes to swing dance and get out of her bubble more.

Stubborn is her middle name. When she has her mind made and her eye set on something, she isn't budging- or it'll take her a lot of convincing. She's not necessarily competitive, she's not seeking out challenges, but she isn't one to turn down the opportunity either. She won't take anyone's misbehavior or negligence toward herself or her friends and will always stand up for the people she cares for- especially when it comes to the younger kids.

ITV seems to be a closed chapter for me; the rapidly progressing degeneration of that genre is just notttttt inspiring any confidence (or interest.) The wholeass industry needs a major major shakeup. Same with Bollywood, nothing's really pulling me anymore. Laapataa Ladies (which I still haven't watched yet) is LITERALLY THE ONLY MOVIE calling my name in all of the 2024 releases. Junaid seems like a promising nepo kid; the Cavill vibes are definitely there. Let's hope that he picks good scripts and doesn't fall down the usual wormhole.

Things that I have been watching and enjoying in the past few weeks:

The Acolyte: I literally know/care nothing about the Star Wars universe, but Manny Jacinto. Enough said. I need to rewatch coz god his character has me going awooooooooga like a fuckin' cartoon wolf. I am obsessed.

Abbott Elementary: Giving B99-ish (but much more mellow.)

Modern Family: Just a rewatch (during my mealtimes)

Late Night with Seth Meyers/Last Week Tonight/The Daily Show for US election shitshow in palatable doses

Meet You at the Blossom: A chinese BL which is fulllllllllllly delivering on the toxic romance from the Tellywood of yore

This Love Doesn't Have Long Beans: A thai BL that is again, giving v Tellywood romcom vibes (Gul Khan types), with not one, BUT TWO WHOLE ENEMIES TO LOVERS couples. Noice.

Love Sea: Ridiculously high heat/good chemistry; one half of couple is the greenest fuckin flag in the history of human existence.

My Love Mix Up (Thailand): My cutest lil kuchupuchu babies. I wanna put them in my pocket and squishhhhhhhh them allllll like a goddamn stress ball. Wholesome wholesome lil show that makes me feel warm and sunshiney inside.

4 Minutes: No real idea what's really going on here with the time skips and background crimes and shit, plus this show feels like an anxiety attack in audiovisual form, BUT I'm here for Bible Wichapas giving me morally-grey himbo with hilarious (to me) gay panic.
