Penrose Song of the Day, Day 33: Almost (Sweet Music) by Hozier

The triumphant return! It's back, baybee!!! There might even be 2 (or 3?!?!?!) of them!

I get along without you very well some other nights.

I took a break from these, for a bit. I was going through it, but I'm a little further in now. Would you believe this song is one of the reasons why?

I'm not alone, this song is hardly a sleeper. Anything with half a billion streams has something going for it. And Hozier? On the Hozier loving website? Daring today, aren't we? A dabble of appealling to the masses perhaps.

Not really. Appealing to me, maybe.

This song makes me cry. I don't know if I can articulate why.

I think part of it is just the sheer fun Hozier is having with dropping a different jazz reference in every line of this song. The sheer number of songs he weaves into this is breathtaking. You have very straightforward name drops like Chet Baker, Duke Ellington. But almost every line is either lifted from a Jazz song, references a Jazz singer, or does both. Hozier is someone who has been very clear, vocal, and celebratory of his references, inspiriations, and musical predecessors. There's a respect for and reverence for the black artists, the giants he is standing on the shoulders on. His genuine joy, his love of this music and desire to give back to it, to recognize it and give it flowers. It's something that moves me, a little. I'm moved.

The lyrics are a whole nother animal for me.

I'm almost me again.

I think the joy of poetry is telling a story with efficiency. To cut right to the heart of a feeling. Not to ride Hemingway's dick, but he was kind of onto something with the paring down of a story, the minimalist approach. Single brushstrokes defining mountains. Time and again we see brevity, paucity, terseness as something to be celebrated- when done successfully.

The way that a sentence sings when you know that's all you needed to write. Where adding another word, another pause, a fucking comma would ruin it. There's something there, in the same way that bombast and maximalism and the sheer overstuffed lived-in rococo over the topness can take some artworks to new unexplored heights. Just as with maximal works, where there's too much, and it bursts through with the joy of being, something simple can speak volumes to the lonely, stark truth.

I'm almost me again, she's almost you.

I love this song because this song is about recovery. This song is about getting better. This song is about hope, after darkness. It's about love, sure, and it's about the joy of music. But this song, at its core, is about a man learning, shakingly, how to be after something calamitous.

I've got some color back- she thinks so too. I laugh like me again.

He'll get there. He's going to get there. He can see it, hear it. There's sweet music playing in the dark.

The line that makes me cry every time though is "I get along without you very well some other nights". Because some nights I do get along without you! But not tonight. Not now. I don't know where to start. I'm lost in the dark, and I can hear that sweet music. But I'm only ALMOST me again. I'm not fully there yet.

The song is so bright, colorful (yet somehow sepia steeped, in my head. Hozier conjures a lot of warm, comforting, almost ruddy brown colors in my mind. Truly a sun dappled bonfire of a man, tbh). It's sad, but it's joyful. I think I hear it differently every time I hear it.

And honestly there is something so fulfilling to me when a song like THIS is popular. I love music for all tastes and all genres. A song can be a simple beat to dance to, a treatise on power, you can use it to wash a man out of your hair, to boogie all night long. To cry, to release to finally be clean. You can make music that challenges what a song or music even is, you can make music that is callibrated to the masses to appeal. You can do whatever you want with song.

But I think a song like this, doing well commercially, is my favorite thing. This song is personal. This song is referential, it's deferential. It's in dialogue with its influences and aware of where it came from. It's tongue in cheek and playful and smart and accessible. It's well constructed. It is, as close as one can get, at least for me, a perfect song.

And it sounds damn sweet too, not to mention.

I've hardly talked about the actual MUSIC of it and well, Hozier does not disappoint. It's snappy, it's percussive. There's a gospel feel to it with the backing vocals creating this aural wall behind the simple instrumentation. This song is just SO good, I don't know how to describe it. The guitar lead-in is intriguing and quirked up. The build is simple, clean, elegant. A lot of hand percussion, a simple kick drum. Some piano parts, as a little garnish. The song feels like something I could play with a couple friends. We have hands for clapping. We can stomp for the kick drum. I have a guitar, only one of us has to play! and singing this with other people would heal something inside me, I think. Democratized in a way that only something soulful can be- this song WANTS people to play it, for lack of a better explanation.

I can't say enough good things about this song. I know that everyone else in the world knows it is a good song. I know. But I love it. And listen. You could be dead right now. Go listen to something you love.

Ok, so I finished first book and tbh I started as a joke but I'm probably gonna end up being addicted lmao

Now I have to keep in mind that I wanted to read this when I was like 12 but I am now 30 (what a leap in time 😬) so obviously I'm not reading with the same eyes. I know for sure that 12yo me would have been obsessed with it, I love the idea of kids turning into animals and I would have made scenarios and possibly fanfictions with shit tons of OCs (even tho back then I didn't even know the word fanfic but that had never stopped me lmao).

Now as an adult I obviously find the book jumping too quickly into action and being too condensed but keeping in mind that it is for teens, it does make sense. Now, I have to tell that all those months I have been chasing after the absolute bliss I felt reading when I was young, and overall being nostalgic of my teens (even tho it was in fact shit years djzjzj) and I found in these books what I loved about fiction back then and that we kind of lost along the way with YA literature today. Now I don't read that much YA anymore, I think the last one I read was Cruel Prince and I hated it (some might say it's not YA but to me it kind of is YA). Tbh basically since Six of Crows I never loved any YA books after, I think. And I don't even like the world YA anymore because it has been turned into like fantasy or science fiction with romance and like no that's not it just call them SFF romances books and move along with it. But also sometimes they call YA a fantasy book just because it has romance in it and honestly WTF is wrong them. Anyway I'm completely derailing from the initial topic sorry.

So as I was saying, it is for teens and adults can read teen books if they want and that's fine and let's stop trying to invent new terms for marketing purposes every two days. Also it always funny and interesting seeing librarians and booksellers having discussion where to put a certain book because it means the said book is interesting.

And ofc we shouldn't expect some things -such has heavy descriptions- from books targeted at teens. And I'm not expecting them. Yes it goes fast, yes it's short sentences with a lot of dialogues etc. Etc. But that's normal for kid fiction.

Now what I really love and that I know is gonna be the reason why I love the books despite all of this is that it has exactly what my nostalgic brain seek for: a bunch of kids teaming together to beat some evil. I'm a sucker for a family of kids/teens/adults/misfits whatever. It's just my favourite trope in the world. And I will take it over romance any day. Not that I hate romance, but I prefer having the plot over the romance and the romance being just like one of the many relationships characters experience (now you know why I'm not into YA as it has basically turned into romance with minimalist fantasy world building and then a plot nowadays). Obviously there are many counterexamples of books focused on romance that I love, the most recent being This How You Lose the Time War but if you've read it... You know the writing and the type of narrative is the reason why it is an adult romance book, bye. But other than this examples it's not what I seek when I picking a book targeted at younger audience, and it's absolutely not what I seek when reading nostalgic 90s 00s stories. Because that's not what they were about. HDM was not about romance even they have some, HP wasn't about romance either, Ewilan wasn't about romance either and so weren't pretty much all teen books we had at the time. But they did have romance at some point and that's completely different. Like I expect Animorphs to have romantic drama at some point and that's fine with me. But keeping in mind that is not for adult, it kind of make sense that friendship, family are very important topics in these books. Like it is what most teens live. Or maybe teens don't live like this anymore, idk? But for me it was I lived, and romantic relationships came afterwards (or not at all dhjdje) but basically most of us we were just discovering it at that time. However the absolute drama we had over the 'you are not my bestie anymore', complaining about our family and stuff, that was big. And being in group of friends is what most of us were looking for back then. I mean having no friends was way more worse than not having a bf or gf, at least it was for me.

So yes I love the kids friendships over the rest. And I love that the books depicts them as kids, they react and act like kids and it's great and I hope teens today still can find these kind of stories. I already got attached to these kids and they have already distinctive personalities and stories so I can't wait to see the different POVs. Can't wait to see them have big ass dramas and feud against each other and suffering because, well, I love angst. I can already see that trauma is gonna be an important part of the story and some seems to have pretty fucked up families and that's topic I love to read about too.

And tbh kids turning into animals has the same vibes for me that when I've first read HDM with people having their soul visible has animals. Idk, there is something inherently adventurous and fun with the combo kids + animals. Or maybe I just love animals, we don't know. This come from someone whose very first original story was about a dude crossing a cursed cave with his cheetah lmao.

But yes, so far I liked it, the writing was according to its audience, the story is very kids story. And I think it's gonna have a decent world building. And I can tell that characters development are going to happen hand in hand with the plot and I like it. I just however found out that some books are ghostwritten and I am a bit wary of it but I'm far from being there to worry about it now anyway. This first book was an exposition so I kinda understand why it is a bit fast. The narrative being fast, I know they are all short books. Tbh if I'm reading all of them in one go I won't even be able to tell all books apart so it won't matter that much anyway.

Watch me falling for the late 90s early 00s nostalgia trick. I mean it's funny when you think about it, because I have been allergic to all these reboots of our generations or older because I can see from trailers only how polished they are. Like I do expect some stuff to be outdated and not exactly extremely progressive happening in the books, but also I am an adult so I can totally have the necessary distance to both appreciate something and be aware of its wrong.

TBH to this day one of the points I find most interesting about Xiyoji is its presentation of & the questions it implicitly raises about what kind of violence is acceptable and what kind is unacceptable, such as with Sun Wukong being berated by Tang Sanzang for having murdered so many individuals he lost count vs. the monk’s intense admiration for the Tang emperor despite this man also being described as an someone who had “countless people” killed, including, or so the text heavily implies, his own brothers. It could just be an example of that old trend where if you win your wars you’re considered a great and benevolent ruler but if you lose you’re remembered as a bloodthirsty demon.

I don’t think so? I think my mom just liked my name....which is funny because I don’t go by it anymore.

2. When was the last time you cried?

Haven’t the slightest, tbh. Wanted to cry, today. Actually cried? Not entirely sure. It might’ve been the day I found out my neighbor passed only a week after being diagnosed with metastatic cancer.

3. Do you have kids?

I have pets and that’s slightly less expensive but more rewarding. Fight me on it.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

Not as much as I used to. I’m more of a deadpan snarker like a proper Addams.

5. What's the first thing you notice about people?

>shrugs< I’m more of a once-over type. Your vibes do the distinguishing.

6. What's your eye color?

Hazel

7. Scary movies or happy ending?

A well-written movie has both.

8. Any special talents?

I am a goddamned freak of nature. Animals love me, plants thrive for me, and most things I can pick up on relatively quickly and with photographic memory-like accuracy. Until it comes to sports and/or math.

9. Where were you born?

In a building.

10. What are your hobbies?

I haven’t had proper hobbies in a hot minute. I’m going to get more serious about gardening (again) this year, and I don’t count care tasks as a hobby. I’ve gotten fond of interior decorating, the more macabre the better (fuck you, white people who can only design in farmhouse-minimalist-modernism with emphasis on pale neutrals). I sew, but that’s more of a practical skill than a hobby, though I’d like to take up cross-stitch and crochet. Maybe knitting. (You know, more practical skills.) That’s the same way I feel about cooking even though I do enjoy it. I’m learning how to roller skate instead of just roller blade. Learning how to take apart my bike and put it back together so I can do my own repairs (but I don’t know if I can count that as a hobby vs a practical skill, either.) I read. I have a formal degree in writing, though I’m SUPPOSED to do it for pleasure, too. I enjoy the outdoors and am (forcing) myself to spend more time birdwatching this year. ....I have a duolingo. (I think I might actually have hobbies even if I have to force myself to engage with them sometimes)

11. Have you any pets?

That implies they aren’t my kids. I have kitties, pups, fish, and -- soon! -- a tarantula. I had a tarantula. He passed about a year ago. I want another, I just had to work up to emotionally being ready again. My love for lil creatures is limitless. People, not so much.

12. What sports do you play/have you played?

This is gonna be the most “yeah, you’re Goth For A Reason” answer you’re ever gonna hear, but: I was a child ballerina. I did cheer. I also did tap. I also did martial arts for several years. Horseback riding. Now I’m into roller skating and cycling, though the latter is more of a transit + aesthetic thing than competitive. I do also enjoy swimming, hiking, climbing, and being able to out-lift most guys. I also would’ve done kickboxing but the panini hit, and I wanted to attend the Sword Gym in the city, but Expensive.

13. How tall are you

5′6′’. It works out now that I’m built like a werewolf.

14. Favorite subject in school?

English/”Language Arts” for early schooling and Horror Writing in college....for obvious reasons ;)

15. Dream job?

I want to hit the NYT bestseller list so I can make everyone subject to my bullshit on a regular basis. Succeed at everything and retain a captive audience afterward? 20/10, seems like a great idea. (It would be nice to Day Job back with animals, but only part time, and at a living wage.)

Hi there! I am reuploading this fic and this time I want to actually try because tbh I didn’t give af about pacing, editing, etc. as harrymoncheri

I’ve decided to scrap the original plot and make this a prompt-based project!

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy part 1 (the intro) of personal trainer!harry

Disclaimer: I write stories and use Harry Styles as a face claim. In no way shape or form does my writing reflect how I perceive the actual Harry to be. These are my characters, the face is just a bonus!

Warnings: This story will contain mature themes.

The parking lot itself was intimidating. Eden’s eyes remained wide in wonder as she took in the cars that couldn’t have been less than a couple hundred thousand dollars. When she won the year-long membership for a five-star gym through a raffle at her uni, she hadn’t thought about what to expect. From the outside, the gym looked quite small but as she walked in, the first thing that welcomed her was a set of gleaming black stairs leading to an underground facility.

Her shoes squeaked on each step down. She kept her gaze low to avoid tripping and embarrassing herself in front of the tycoons in gym gear and teenagers working out in custom name brand sneakers.

The receptionist smiled upon seeing her, his veneers a stark contrast against his brown skin. “You’re the one I just spoke with on the phone, right? Eden?”

She smiled and shook his hand. “That’s me.”

After having her sign a few papers, he led her to an office–a small room surrounded by glass walls with a view of the elevators. She soon learned that they led to lower levels housing the spa, pool and basketball courts.

While waiting for the manager to start the consultation, they sat and talked for a few minutes. Eden learned a lot about the receptionist. His name was Luca and his father owned the gym. He was a couple years older than her and studied at the same university. She was positive she’d never seen him; she would have remembered a man as beautiful as him.

“Sorry for keeping you waiting,” Luca said while checking the minimalist clock hung on the only wall not made of glass. “I don’t know what’s taking him so long.”

She waved a hand as if brushing him off. “Don’t apologize. I’m sure he’s somewhere around here doing what managers do best.”

“My manager isn’t in, actually. You’ll be speaking to one of our personal trainers today.”

She furrowed her eyebrows but nodded all the same. “Oh, okay.”

Luca’s face brightened as something caught his eye over Eden’s shoulder and he stood up. “Speak of the devil.”

Eden turned in her seat and her breath hitched as her eyes landed on a man whose looks, she imagined, would take over her dreams at night from that day forward. He was dangerously handsome in the simplest clothing– grey cotton joggers and a black t-shirt she noticed every personal trainer was wearing.

Her gaze trailed to his strong jaw, then up to where his chestnut hair curled around his ears in the most endearing way. When her eyes met his striking green ones, she felt heat creep up her neck at being caught blatantly ogling him.

“Eden? Did you hear what I said?”

She didn’t miss the smirk on the personal trainer’s lips as her head whipped towards Luca. “Sorry, what did you say?”

He gave her a knowing look. “I said I’m going to go back to the front. Did you need anything else?”

“Oh, um, no. Thank you for everything,” she bit her lip, fully aware of the trainer’s heavy gaze on her. It was hard concentrating on watching Luca exit the office only to pretend like the suffocating presence of the walking wet dream was fictitious.

The door closed on its own with a click that echoed in Eden’s head. The realization that she was in a closed room with the attractive man dawned on her.

“Nice to meet you, Eden. I’m Harry.” His voice was raspy and deep, the cells of her body vibrating to each syllable he uttered.

“Nice– “she cleared her throat as the word caught in her mouth. “Nice to meet you, too.”

Eden sat in front of the desk. The sky-blue cushion on the seat at first glance appeared uncomfortable, but as soon as her bum touched the fabric, she decided it was the most comfortable chair she’d ever had the pleasure of sitting on.

She started to get nervous when Harry did not say anything, only studied her face for a moment, before nodding to himself and opening one of the desk drawers to pull out a notepad and a Montblanc pen.

“First thing I’m going to ask you is: What are your fitness goals?”

Eden opened her mouth then closed it. “Umm. I guess to just get fit,” she said stupidly.

But he only nodded in encouragement. “Can you think of anything specific?”

“Build strength,” she leaned forward. “Endurance.”

He smiled, and she wanted to swoon at the dimple that appeared on his cheek. “Do you have a history with sports or fitness?”

“I used to dance,” she perked up. “Ballet.”

His face gave away that he was impressed, and she wanted to pat herself on the back. “You must be really flexible.”

She flushed. “Well, it’s been a while. I doubt it.”

“I guess we’ll have to work on your flexibility too, then.”

Her head snapped up, eyes locking with his. It was a fairly innocent statement and within context. But it was the tone he used. Subtle, but she didn’t miss it nor the mischievous glint in his eye. She gulped soundlessly and looked down at her leggings, pretending to pick at a loose thread.

He broke the silence. “Before I ask any more questions, are you okay with me training you? Or would you prefer a female?”

Eden’s lips rolled inward as she pondered his question. A part of her was dumbfounded at the fact that she even had to think about it. Of course she wanted to choose him. However, she promised herself no more distractions. She was there to get fit and take advantage of this free opportunity, not put herself out there for the second time only for it to crash and burn again.

“Female,” she said.

If she wasn’t watching him carefully, she would have missed the hint of disappointment on his face before it disappeared and was replaced by a look of understanding.

The rest of the consultation went by with Harry asking her a few more questions. She was getting much more comfortable and they both seemed to relax into conversation the more time went by. Harry finished off the meeting by taking her body measurements, BMI and fat percentage.

Eden later met Yaz, her personal trainer. She was a kind woman with long black hair just like hers, but it was straightened to perfection and didn’t seem to have a single split end. Harry had given his fellow trainer all the information he’d collected from Eden, and she did not waste time.

Eden was guided to an artificial turf where horizontal bars hung over their heads with different TRX ropes suspended from them. Yaz had her do basic exercises to assess what they needed to work on, but Eden could barely focus. While Yaz kept her eyes on Eden’s movements, Eden kept hers on the mirror reflection of the man who was walking around the weight area, greeting everyone. He seemed well-loved in this facility. The men greeted him like he was a future business partner, and the women tried maintaining his attention with flirty smiles.

Yet, his attention was elsewhere. All he could think about was Eden’s thick waves and big brown eyes that gave away everything she was feeling. He wasn’t sure if she was aware of how easy it was to read her. The minute he walked into that office and laid eyes on her, he knew he was done for. Her red leggings and black sports bra left little to the imagination and he wasn’t complaining. He wanted to touch her, just to know what striking gold felt like.

Now, stopping in his tracks to watch her speak to Yaz, he caught her eye through the mirror and he couldn’t stop himself from smiling. His grin only widened when she offered a shy smile back before giving Yaz her full attention, cheeks blooming red.

He knew then that he was fucked.

Gabriel probably doesn't realize this, but being kind goes a long way. And so does being intelligent. Crowley finds both of these qualities very attractive. He knows Aziraphale will treat him right, and that's what he wants at the end of the day. Crowley has had his fair share of hot men who ended up being assholes. He'll take this more homely guy over them any day.

Yeah, Aziraphale is well aware that going cold turkey just won't work. And he can tell that Crowley, especially with his job and all his mental health problems, just wants quick and convenient. He doesn't have the energy for anything more. Simply putting out more fruit now and then is probably enough to tempt him to eat healthier. Making fun meals that are healthy also helps. Azi probably doesn't mind cooking for him anyways, as long as he helps with the clean up. Which Crowley will cause he's a minimalist neat freak.

And as for the mental health problems, I'm sure Azi does wonders for him there too. Even something as simple as a shoulder rub now and then is enough to help Crowley feel better. At the end of the day, he's only asking for so little. Having a healthy relationship with someone probably took away half his mental health problems in the long run.

Oh, yeah. I remember when I was still in high school, I would tell myself just to not do something useless, like English. But after two years of college, I started hearing so many horror stories about fucking STEM majors struggling to find employment, and when they do, it pays so little (or sometimes nothing at all). And if you're AFAB or a POC, it's even worse. People raised female, or who present female, often end up getting chased out of those fields due to harassment and discrimination. Being barred from the good wages and everything. Don't get me wrong, I'll still finish my degree and give it a shot, but my optimism for... anything really has been utterly destroyed at this point. And tbh, I'm not even sure if I would have gone to college in the first place had I not been one of the lucky few to get most of it for free. I had a scholarship in my first two years that covered so much of my schooling, that I was basically getting paid to have an education. I don't see how I would have been able to do this without financial aid and scholarships. I would have been in so much debt. And for... nothing if it turns out I'll be just like those other AFAB individuals who go nowhere in STEM. At this point, I have to wonder why I didn't just use the free college for something very useless but very fun. At least I might have made some friends had I done something like creative writing or English. And hell, I could have probably gotten myself into a very good school for that too.

I think people seriously underestimate the misery of living in poverty and working a shitty job. Two years at my current job has left me a fucking husk of a human being. It's made me realize that so many people on this planet are honestly shit. And while I hated being around rich snobs at the prestigious engineering school, at least some people there were genuinely nice and actually earned a place there (oh, what I'd do if I could turn back time, I should have spent more time around those people rather than the bad company I attracted). I stg, poverty brings out the worst in people. So many of my co-workers come from troubled backgrounds, just like me, and no offense to other people from troubled backgrounds, but I'm sick, so fucking sick, of being around that misery. Like, for one, bad childhoods seem to make half the people who experience them abusive assholes themselves. And if they don't end up being abusers, they end up being difficult to deal with in some other way. Again, I know that makes me a hypocrite, but there's only so much a person can take, and I'm tired of being an emotional punching bag. I'm also tired of being around others who have tried to do better, but ended up going nowhere. That shit is depressing af. Or even worse, they did actually make some seriously stupid life decisions and now they want you to feel bad for them. Meanwhile, they'll judge every little thing you do wrong and ask way too many questions about your personal life. Again, so many people are shit in so many different ways, omfg.

That's probably what Crowley's dealing with. Lots of miserable people wasting their lives away in poverty. That's probably why some of his co-workers take out their anger on him. Including Hastur. He also has to deal with shit from his roommates. Crowley probably doesn't even recognize the person he's become at this point. Maybe he finds it hard to believe that he's had hobbies and aspirations in life. Speaking from experience, before I started working crappy jobs, I used to be able to do so much more. Go on hikes, hang out with people, make appointments without feeling exhausted in doing so, plan out entire field guides for stories, analyze things on a deep level, THINK clearly at all, etc. Now... I can't handle anything more than mindless pleasures. I'm proud of myself even if I get a one-shot posted. I used to beat myself up over not getting a longfic finished when I already had three quarters of it written. God damn, I used to have 200 page novels laying around that I'd written myself! I used to READ novels! I used to read fanfic like it was my job!

Also, maybe it's tmi, but I feel like retail has also turned me... aroace? I'm not going to claim the label or anything. I know I'm not. But like... in a way it seems I've become that way because of the situation. I just remember after about two weeks at my current job, suddenly losing a lot of desire for that kind of thing, and now I'm to the point where I have no desire, and like I said, I lost lots of my desire to indulge in many things I used to enjoy as well. It probably doesn't help that my ex never wanted to kiss me and all that. That took my confidence away for sure. After a life time of not being desired, I get into a relationship with someone who claimed to be really attracted to me, only to not be desired. Tbh, I don't think it's a bad thing that I lost interest. Even if I don't like the reasons behind why it happened, I like being able to fantasize about other things that honestly seem more important anyway. Like having a better job for one. And no longer feeling gross for having those feelings too. Because I was honestly starting to. Idk, maybe it's just another sign that my spirit died, but I feel like it's way more respectable to fantasize about reading books and all that. Because I'd love a life where I didn't have much to worry about and could just do stuff like read and all that. I just want friends too. I don't even care for a relationship at this point. Relationships don't seem like they're worth it irl. Too much work and you probably won't be treated right/have your needs or desires met anyway. Friends are a lot easier. At least, in my experience. Maybe I just got lucky as a teen.

It'd probably be cheaper for both of them if Crowley moved in. If Azi was living at his place by himself, then he probably does something that makes a decent amount of money compared to Crowley's job. So maybe he is a fitness trainer, or he runs a highly successful book selling business. Maybe he's published a few books of his own and they've actually sold lots of copies. Also, if Crowley found himself a better job, a far less exhausting one, he'd probably go above and beyond keeping the place clean. Azi probably isn't good about that himself. He likely needs Crowley's touch around the place.

For some reason, I can actually imagine human Azi being conscientious about his health.

Now, don't get me wrong, he wouldn't be a total health nut. For one, he seems the type who was naturally built to be a little more stout. He wouldn't beat himself up too much over being overweight (but he feels bad when people pick on him for it, and unfortunately, body insecurities are just too common with how ruthlessly society picks on appearance). He just tries to keep off whatever isn't normal for him. He'll still indulge in desserts and all that too.

He just also makes sure that he has healthy, fresh meals. And they're fucking delicious. He can easily inspire human Crowley to actually eat well/work on his eating habits (Crowley is definitely the skinny person who spends long periods of time not eating, or eating very little, and then scarfs down a bunch of junk food). Aziraphale probably tries to encourage Crowley to live a healthier lifestyle in general because lets face it, human Crowley would just not be very kind to his mortal body.

Gabriel, on the other hand, he's the obnoxious gym rat. The fatphobic POS who picks of Azi's weight, even when he's exercising. He tells Azi to do more even though he's already going on walks, doing his stretches, and lifting weights. In other words, he's more of a nuisance rather than a help. He'd probably pick on human Crowley too for being too slender.

Hi thanks for the suggestion, glad to see you here again!

I feel you may not be too constant or, even better, you feel insecure about it cause you don't see results immediately (or after "a reasonable time" which is... okay random, probably depends on your fears moving inside of you in your unconsciousness). You start wondering if you're doing the right thing, overthinking, stucking yourself into an energy of self doubting and feeling undeserving (you probably need to check past unmet needs). And your manifestations get stuck with you. You may even try to not stress over this by finding other things to do/think about, but no matter what you do or don't, you see nothing coming, and sometimes it's hard to keep the faith, and mantain the trust in the divine timing. It's okay and normal.

You need to find the reasons behind your self doubting in order to stop your stress and worries (i.e. do some shadow work). Nurture yourself, teach yourself that is now time to receive and no matter how long you'll need to wait, trust that you will. I know it's very hard to keep waiting, we're so used at living at full speed, having everything almost immediately delivered to our place... but try to think more as nature: you cannot make a plant blossom or make fruits right after having planted a seed. If it can make you feel any better, you're almost there, just hang in there, and keep the faith. Let go and trust. It's probably your last lesson to learn before manifesting. Also learn to balance your thoughts, it's very important when we're manifesting: if you have self doubts, try to calm down and remember you're always in charge and it's only a matter of time and patience (you can go more in detail once you have a specific "dark" thought, by balancing it out with a more compassionate one).

I feel that writing from your heart may help you sort things out.

“this place feels like home”

A/N: someone mentioned it, so here i am

WHAT THE HOGWARTS COMMON ROOMS LOOK LIKE, IN MY CLEARLY SUPERIOR OPINION...

gryffindor common room

i’m no interior decorator, and i’m betting godric gryffindor wasn’t either, so it looks like a glorified man cave

lots of designated areas for just hanging out, a huge, central fireplace, lots of open places perfect for pulling your wand on someone to duel, but very cluttered in other areas where you are meant to be close for house bonding!

secondly, there are a total of like, 4 desks you can use to work on, and they’re pushed to the walls, the chairs constantly stolen for something or another.

the main focus of the gryffindor common room is the couches and chairs

there’s a recliner that some muggle-born student brought in, and when they first kicked it out the purebloods went absolutely feral

they don’t know how it works, but they love it

there are so many radios... gryffindor has the best sound system for any kind of party. the other houses have to use charms to get the sound evenly distributed, but gryffindors just use their like, 10 different radios

there are a lot of spare pillows and blankets, but they don’t exactly have a place to go - they’re usually just thrown on the back of the couches or cast to the floor.

sometimes the 1st years will play “the ground is lava” and it’s vvv sweet

the ceiling has constellations mapped onto it, and they’re actually accurate. using your wand, you can “shift” the sky and it’s a really effective way to get your astronomy homework done

harry didn’t notice it because he’s as observant as a doorknob

the most chaotic thing about the gryffindor common room is the fact that there are real swords and battle axes on the wall, all of which belonged to godric gryffindor himself

students will 100% try to use them as jokes, but they can never manage to actually grab them? their hands just go right through them like they aren’t real

but if you approach them with nothing but wonder and reverence, when you reach out, you can most definitely feel them, and they are real

i really just want someone to have picked up a battle axe during the battle at hogwarts, now

there are a couple of portraits that give life advice, but most of them are #tired and leave their portraits to go visit others because the common room can get so crazy

the amount of animals this common room has,,,, i sure do hope you’re not allergic

there are lizards, rats, toads, cats, tarantulas...

if you’re afraid of any of them, tell your classmates when you’re still a first or second year and the whole of gryffindor tower will rally behind you to make the other person put their animal in their dormitory

there always seems to be leftover food from a party, so you’re well fed.

and if you’re from another house, this is the easiest house to steal food from.

oh, and the carpet (because YEAH, someone put in carpet with some kind of magic) does not match the furnishings at all.

minimalists cry at the sight of this common room

slytherin common room

first of all!!!! this common room has a glass ceiling because someone else came up with this idea and it is legendary

they mentioned the merfolk help with classes! they know sign language! i am very here for it.

then,,, there is an entire section of the common room that is dedicated to games - checkers, chess, poker, solitaire, even some muggle board games

it’s how they foster community. friendly competition is everything to slytherins and slytherins can actually do friendly competition, unlike ravenclaws

at lot of purebloods are still trying to win risk. it confuses them so much.

there’s probably a cat or two in this common room

they actually get along fairly well with the owls, but every so often snape has to come in and stop then from attacking each other and it would be hilarious if he weren’t so intimidating

there’s a lot more space in this common room, or maybe it’s just set up as to give the illusion of more space. either way, the slytherins are more spread out.

they don’t like breathing on each other

the gothic aesthetic does exist, but it’s not all gloomy because some intelligent slytherin’s know that’s bad for mental health.

they probably have a fourth of the room (maybe in a corner) that’s a little more lighted and cozy, with the most supportive portraits in that area

the slytherin common room has bean bags

this was a later addition, ofc, seeing as there is no way in hell salazar slytherin would ever allow that to happen

but everyone loves them a whole lot. 1st years always beeline for them

and slytherin was a good interior decorator, so we have the perfect ratio of portraits to wall space and the amount of lamps is actually palatable.

and there might be a dramatic hamlet skull on a table or two, but they’re not real - just decor. sometimes slytherin’s use them for pranks.

there’s actually a fair bit of communal property, too? like, there’s a lot of blankets, a bookshelf, and a table that always has food on it because the dungeons are hella far away from the kitchens and many slytherins like a good midnight snack

the slytherins actually talk more to ghosts than the other houses - ghosts like to hang out in the dungeons, and the amount of ghost jokes that the slytherins know is incredible

a group of hufflepuffs swear they once heard professor binns laugh at a ghost joke one of the slytherin’s retold

the snake iconography of this room is so high - it would honestly be a little unnerving if everyone wasn’t just used to it.

there’s probably a game going around where someone will conjure up an extra snake decoration and every week the first and second years are trying to find out which one it is

sometimes a very tired 5th year will give you a hint

there’s not a space that’s specifically designated for studying, but you can often find space in a few different places.

the desks are always being used for games, like i mentioned above, but someone had introduced the idea of lap desks and slytherins love that so much.

ravenclaw common room

this is the most minimalist of the common rooms in decor and style, but there’s so much happening at all times that it never looks bare

and a fair few ravenclaws are BIG about organization, so this is one of the more compartmentalized common rooms

it’s also formatted this way because the studious ravenclaw has threatened the musically inclined ravenclaw, saying that they will not hesitate to sabotage the other’s saxophone if they ever hear careless whisper while trying to study for n.e.w.t.s again.

also, i just want to say that ravenclaw house is probably one of the most diverse houses because creativity is so broad, and that combined with their individualistic streak means that community is a little less strong in this house, but there’s a place for everyone

i have no doubt that someone has enchanted the common room to expand on the inside, so it has much more room than say gryffindor common room or hufflepuff common room.

they’re also big about making boundaries - there’s probably actual walls and doors between different areas.

like, one for studying, one for art (like drawing and painting), one for music, etc.

also, you would think this is a quiet common room but you would be wrong.

the quiet ones are slytherin and hufflepuff. gryffindor and ravenclaw are both p chaotic.

except for the quiet room, which is as silent as they come. if you need quiet inspiration, you go there. it’s also the study room, though, so when you’re struck with inspiration, you have to keep quiet.

now, ravenclaws like to keep what is theirs, but they do have some communal property, mostly in the form of books and materials like typewriters and art supplies (although some people are very territorial about their brushes. it’s a toss up.)

there’s a floor to ceiling window that can actually be opened up - kind of like doors. the ravenclaws have it instead of the gryffindors because they have self control and won’t jump out the window without a sure plan of survival.

there’s also statues and busts! rowena ravenclaw was decent at interior design, and she loved sculpture - maybe she had a sculptor lover at one point? who knows? there’s just a lot of busts in ravenclaw tower

no doubt they’re enchanted to give advice or tbh just to gossip. i imagine there’s a lot of gossip in ravenclaw tower

the walls are painted in some places. it’s a rule that you don’t paint over other people’s art, but the paint is also enchanted so that if you look closely, you can see the name of who has painted what, and ravenclaws are too proud to do idiotic things like drawing crude doodles on the walls.

the only person to ever paint on the ceiling is luna lovegood, and she was commissioned to do so after her time at hogwarts.

there’s also a chalkboard wall for when you’re studying and need to write things down to think. beware, though, because your work can and will be erased.

you can also write on the large window i talked about! muggle students have brought dry erase markers and they are much needed.

oh, and ravenclaws have a lot of owl access - they owls like to stop at ravenclaw tower for treats and whatnot, and ravenclaws definitely use this to their advantage. they have priority for mail service and it’s a win tbh.

hufflepuff common room

now helga hufflepuff was no interior decorator either, but she was a homemaker, so we all know that this common room is the most home-like of the bunch

first of all, there are potted plants everywhere. hufflepuffs are known to be good at herbology, and that tradition means there are a whole lot of life in this common room

there’s also a curious amount of sunlight, too, despite being in the basement. i’m not exactly sure how it’s done, but the common room has actual sunlight - it’s important for the plants.

i also imagine there’s one wall that is a long mirror. you can use it for whatever you like, introspection, self affirmations, or reflecting light or whatever, but helga thought it was important to always be aware of yourself.

muggle students have brought sticky notes and now the mirror if full of them - little reminders, little motivations, fun quotes, jokes, etc.

there’s also a lot of couches and desks. the desks are usually very cluttered, but you can always find space for your stuff, somehow. and the couches are the softest at hogwarts, gryffindors have been trying to steal them for years.

also, the marauders were incredibly presumptuous, thinking they had found all of the secret passageways in the castle - there are at least 3 secret passages that only hufflepuffs know about and it’s one of the best kept secrets at hogwarts. they all connect to the common room.

and as initiation, on their first night as hufflepuffs, first years traverse secret passageways in the dark trying to figure out where they lead, all of them having to work together to figure out the lumos spell for some light.

and one of those passageways leads to the kitchens. it’s how they get the best food for parties. hufflepuffs often put in requests for what they want at breakfast or dinner.

this is also the warmest common room. i’m not exactly sure how it’s done, but the common room is never cold - maybe a little chilly, but not cold enough that you need a sweater.

the flooring is carpet, but parts of it are hard wood - it’s clear it used to be carpet, but was stained beyond repair from a broken pot or two.

there is toad supremacy in the hufflepuff common room. there’s probably one or two toads that don’t have real owners but are treated as the house pets.

there’s also a few paintings - all of them are smaller because there’s so much going on in this common room already, the walls have to be mellow to account for everything else, but there’s a couple and all of them like to tell jokes and give really good advice.

two of the newer (and favorite) additions include cedric diggory and tonks. they both get along quite well, although tonks is more mischievous and cedric is more down to earth.

cedric will often tell you how to charm a professor, if you ask, and he might give answers to homework questions to favorite students.

similar to gryffindor common room, there’s a lot of cozy areas that encourage students to chat with each other and spend time together.

but similar to slytherin, there is a lot of games about - they involve less strategy and more fun (like hide and go seek or charades) - but games is a bonding strategy that hufflepuffs utilize.

whoo okay for the character thing: atlantis. as in, the city itself, as a character, if you're okay with that. and/or john, which seemed almost too easy to go for first thing, but i would still love to hear your thoughts. <3

hi there inge!! don't worry I'll do both because you trying to pick my brain is such an honor (also no one else asked for john yet booo)

ATLANTIS

first impression: tbh the fics spoiled me so much because when I finally watched the show I was a bit disappointed that the city wasn't really as sentient and 'alive' as some of the stories out there made me believe. I think they missed a shiny opportunity there (but hey, we pick up where canon left off right? *wink)

impression now: I LOVE THIS BITCH! 'but Kit,' you may ask, 'how much do you love her?' well. I was JUST ABOUT to have a tattoo of a minimalist map of Atlantis before the pandemic hit, so I'd say the love is pretty great (don't worry, I'm still gonna get it I just need to sort a few things out with the friend I was gonna get the tattoo with, so as soon as our schedules align and he stops bailing on me, I'm gonna have Atlantis on my skin for the rest of my natural life)

favorite moment: ughhh it's hard to pick between the one from Rising and when they left Lantea to flee the replicators BUT. if I have to really choose I'd say the latter because it's really the first time we become truly aware that Atlantis is a spaceship, you know? their home is made to be among the stars (but in the interest of staying true to the Atlantis-As-A-Character mindset, I find Quarantine so funny because giiirl come ooonn why are you initiating the lockdown protocol for no reason?? you're smarter than that! you're sabotaging McKay's love life!! hahah)

idea for a story: ohmygosh so many!! I actually have another series in mind that is my way of dealing not only with the concept of Sentient!Atlantis but also with my hang-ups & misgivings regarding the Ancients as a race and the whole deal with the Ori (from SG-1). I don't know when I'm gonna actually start taking it seriously but since I don't think my love for the show(s) is waning any time soon I think we'll get there eventually (for now, Stargate Oblivion is the only outlet for my Atlantis love and while it isn't the only focus of that fic it is pretty integral)

unpopular opinion: I've mentioned this a few times in this blog but I really don't think Atlantis is 'alive' in a human kind of way or even in a conventional AI way, either. she's always gonna be 'alien' so to put her in a neat box where we give her Earth attributes and assume she loves ATA gene carriers like her children/lover(s) is just too easy for me. I need more moral ambiguity and cosmic+eldritch-ness to it.

favorite relationship(s): w/ the command triumvirate (i.e. Rodney, John, and Elizabeth) the men are pretty self-explanatory but Elizabeth is also very important to me because this is the city's governess! her captain!! (can you imagine if instead of punting her out via a space gate they made her part of Atlantis? like in a pseudo-symbiotic kind of way?? that would've been so cool to see! ethically horrifying but eh, they might as well be hanged for a sheep as a lamb lol)

favorite headcanon: I just really like the idea that Atlantis is unnerved by John because he's too much like the people who created (and abandoned) her :)

JOHN

first impression: the early Stargate BFNs were sooo good at writing John's drawl-y inner monologue & voice that 'Laconic Little Shit with Terrible Posture' is pretty much how I saw John Sheppard those first few weeks of reading fic. I decided early on that even if I'm not gonna like him that much when I finally watch the show, the fact that he's an adrenaline junkie who likes ferris wheels & football and who took American Military Repression to another galaxy is a guarantee that he is My Kind of Weird.

impression now: John's ultimately become the mouthpiece and vessel of my fanworks not only because he's the best vehicle for my Rodney Love but also because his personality and mindspace is the easiest for me to slip into. I relate to him the most and while that doesn't necessarily mean I love him unconditionally (in fact there are more times when I want to pick him up and shake him like a maraca for the decisions he makes) it does give me a deep and sort-of intrinsic understanding of his character that --- while sometimes painful --- gives me hope for a happy and fulfilling life for people like Sheppard and myself

favorite moment: it changes on a monthly basis but lately I keep finding myself marinating in the feels brought by, "Do me a favor. When Atlantis shows up, tell them I said goodbye." (granted Rodney's reaction was hilarious but that line still hit me with 50 points of emotional damage)

idea for a story: heh. really, there's too many to mention. but the first long one-shot I have planned for 2022 is about an AU Sheppard showing up in Atlantis tho so that should be fun

unpopular opinion: hmm probably that I just can't see him being the head of the expedition. he has shown leadership skills in canon but having him be where the buck stops is a little too reaching (also among the reasons why I still have trouble properly reading Written by the Victors)

favorite relationship: McShep aside, his friendships with Teyla & Elizabeth are GOLDEN. I actually have that kind of friendship myself (where I have a dude in my life I trust enough to get me out of a beaming device where I'm stuck with an entire civilization or even to make the hard call of leaving me behind with the enemy to save our people) and let me tell you, it is one of life's greatest treasures <3

favorite headcanon: had a pretty religious (maybe even Catholic because if I'm gonna be projecting here I might as well go all the way) upbringing

What are your winx and specialists tattoo headcanons? Who would have tattoos and which one would they have?

Heyo, as usual sorry this took me a little bit but I wanted to properly organise my thoughts and find reference pics as well. and tbh I could end up coming up with more stuff but this is what I have so far. (under the cut because it ended up kinda long af and tagging @catlliecal because she also sent an ask asking for this).

Bloom:

Ok so my headcanons for Bloom’s tattoos have changed a bit over the years

but at the moment I imagine her with a fairly large hip into thigh, full coverage piece of the Great Dragon

she chose it’s position because i imagine oritel is probably a conservative old man when it comes to tats (even tho i can so see miriam also having a dragon tattoo) so she puts it on her thigh so she can easily cover it by wearing a long dress for royal events

it would probably be in black and white but I can see the Dragon being intertwined with some flowers, probably Daphne flowers for her sister (which you can see in the two images on the right) and I can see those being coloured a pale pink kind of like in the middle reference pic

and because this is the magical dimension i imagine it’s been spelled so while it stays confined to the one area, it can move a little bit and change positions

so because bloom is both a basic bitch and completely extra i totally see her having more than one dragon tat

her second one would be a lot smaller and probably be a lot more simpler in design compared to her thigh dragon, so something more like the top two images in the second graphic

also in all black but maybe spelled to breathe red fire?

and it would also be enchanted so it can fly around her body, and unlike the bigger dragon it’s not constrained to any area - it’s favourite places to be are flying in circles around her wrist or sitting on her left collarbone over her heart

the other two pics in the second graphic are just older ideas i had for bloom’s tattoos, i was convinced for ages she would have it going down her back like the one on the left (i might eventually give this tattoo to either miriam or daphne) and i just love the design of the one on the right so i briefly considered her having like a shoulder/half sleeve dragon

Flora:

all of flora’s would be in colour i think and she would definitely have that sort of water colour effect on them that’s really popular now

her first two are similar in design to the pic on the left and she would have them on either side of her torso, sort of upper rib area, to the side/just underneath her boobs and they’re like a mirror image of each other

these ones probably wouldn’t be spelled to do anything special

the one on her back is similar in design to the pic on the right, but i can see it also being drawn more like a full tree

the writing down the centre would be her and helia’s family names (because i can definitely see them hyphenating when they get married) and then on each leaf is a name, first helia, then each of her children

i’m playing around with the idea of this one being spelled to change with the seasons, the writing would always stay the same, but the leaves change colour and eventually fall off during autumn and then grow back in the spring.

Layla:

for the moment i can actually see layla only having one tattoo

and that’s this yin yang/opposites fish design that you can see in the reference images (they’re all more or less the same i just found too many cute photos)

it’s actually based on a mosaic in the andros castle that layla loves, and she gets it because it brings her peace when she’s feeling upset or anxious about anything

they would be all in white, one fully white, and the other just a white outline

i think the fish would probably be on the inside of her forearm so she can see them and they would be spelled to swim in circles around each other

i can see her maybe getting nabu’s name somewhere after he dies but i’m not 100% sure where she would put it

Musa:

musa’s are actually the hardest to pin down for me just because i can see her having A Lot

like at least one full sleeve and maybe two

one sleeve would be mostly made up of the music notes for a song her dad wrote for her mother before she died and that would run down most of her arm and would be decorated with birds and flowers important to melodian culture (like the flower top right)

like bloom’s hers would be mostly in black with a few pale red and orange accents here and there

the music notes would be spelled so that when you touch them they play the song

her other arm is more just a collection of stuff she thinks is cool or pretty like the bottom two pics or the boxing art below

and i can eventually see her completely filling her arms so the tattoos spill onto her back

Stella:

stella in my opinion just has two

they’re very minimalistic designs, plain black, and on the inside of either elbow

she has a sun for solaria on one side and a moon for celestia (her mother’s home realm) on the other side

the moon tattoo causes quite the controversy when she gets it because some solarians think it isn’t right for their crown princess to show such strong ties for another realm but stella refuses to remove it

they aren’t spelled to move or change or anything but they do have the ability to glow a bright gold at night

Tecna:

like stella, tecna’s tattoos are rather minimalistic as well

but unlike stella, tecna’s are very meme-y

literally

tecna gets a QR symbol on the inside of her upper left arm that when scanned is actually a rick-roll

and she eventually develops a spell for it that allows the QR code to change so that it takes you to whatever meme tecna currently finds the most hilarious

her other tattoo, which is on her right forearm, is written in binary code and no one actually knows what it says

they can never get a straight answer out of tecna about what it is, and everytime someone asks her she tells them something different, so they assume it’s meme-y like her other one

but actually it’s a short sappy quote that reminds her of timmy but she’ll never admit it to anyone

(don’t ask me what that quote is i haven’t decided yet)

that one has a simple spell on it that makes it look like someone is typing out the code over and over again

kind of like musa i can see tecna having more tattoos than this, i just can’t decide what they would be, but i think they would all follow the same simple, minimalistic design

Specialists:

it was hard for me to find reference pics i liked for the guys so i’m just going to give a brief description of some of the tattoos i think they would have

i don’t know if i’ve written about this on tumblr before, but i have a long-held headcanon that heros have a big tattoo culture:

getting their first tattoo is part of their graduation ceremony from red fountain

they’re encouraged to get tattoos that remind them of their family/friends/loved ones - some yada yada about remembering who they’re fighting for when facing evil forces

and it’s very common to honour fallen team members by getting a tattoo of their name or something that reminds them of the person

Sky:

sky’s tattoos are mostly on his chest and back

his graduation tattoo is an eraklyon prayer of protection that runs down his spine

he doesn’t get any other tattoos after that until nabu dies which is when he gets his friend’s name on his ribs (right side) and that’s where he adds other names of fallen friends/team-mates

later after he and bloom get married he gets her name on his left pec (right over his heart the big sap) and then adds his kids names beneath it after they’re born

none of sky’s tattoos are spelled or enchanted

Brandon:

brandon’s grad tattoo is a list of his siblings names on his left forearm and Stella’s name on his right arm

eventually, like sky, he also gets his kids names added to stella’s

all his name tattoos are individually spelled to burn really hot when that person is in trouble

brandon struggles to decide for a while where to put nabu’s name but eventually decides on the centre of his back because he likes to think that wherever nabu went after he died, he’s still there in spirit watching his back

Riven:

riven shocks the fuck out of everyone when he graduates and gets the red fountain school motto (”live with courage and die with honour”) tattooed in giant fuck off lettering across his shoulders

they all figured he lowkey hated red fountain and maybe he did at first because come on he’s a rebel without a cause at what is basically a military school, of course he kinda hates it there

but he also acknowledges that red fountain more or less turned his life around as well as brought him into contact with the people who eventually he comes to regard as family (much more than his biological one)

like musa i can see riven getting a bunch of other tattoos just because they look cool and putting them all over his arms, chest, and back

but his right bicep would be reserved for tattoos of his fallen friends

unlike sky and brandon he doesn’t get names however, but instead gets symbols, the first being a likeness of nabu’s staff after he passes

Helia:

helia i think would have all of his on his back because he understands the importance of having them but also doesn’t need to see them every day

his grad piece is kind of unorthodox because he gets his favourite line of poetry to remind him that there’s still beauty in the world even when he’s facing evil

later i feel like he would get something like outstretched bird wings just below it

and under that he gets nabu’s name in really nice script

Timmy:

timmy is probably the least prone to tattoos of the group and he has to think for a long time on what to get for graduation

and people assure him that he doesn’t actually have to get one just because most everyone else is

but eventually he decides to get a small coloured blaster on the inside of his elbow

when he was in freshman year at red fountain he was lowkey ashamed when all his classmates took to using swords almost straight away while he preferred using his gun because he thought it meant he lacked the physical strength and courage to use a short range weapon

but he slowly came to realise that it wasn’t a weakness, but just that he had different strengths to his friends and classmates and that wasn’t a bad thing

so he decides that’s a good thing to remember

and when nabu dies again he debates whether or not to get a tattoo commemorating him but ultimately decides he will and gets ‘his name written near his blaster

hello everyone! I got an ask from an anon asking for tips on time management so i decided to type this out before school starts heheh…

poor time management and procrastination, unfortunately, plague just about all of us lol. people with a short attention span (like me) and who are pretty much always on their phone (me again) and who hate scheduling are the most susceptible to these.

over the years i struggled with time management(studying the night before the exam 🤙🏼) but! these are some tips that have helped me in scheduling, avoiding procrastination and improving time management.

1. Write it down

as always, we’re starting with BEFORE the actual task. write all tasks, assignments, projects and homework, test dates down somewhere (notebook preferably so that you dont lose it. it doesn’t have to be your bujo and you do not have to start a bujo for this specific reason!!!) and write the deadlines. this is subconscious pressure to do work once you get home. also, since you can see everything, it’s easier to schedule it out later

2. Use travel time

i cannot stress this enough!!!! sorry that it appears in all my tips posts but it truly is very useful. for short commutes, review the content you’ve learnt so that when you start on your homework, you’ve already got the hang of it. ie you dont struggle to understand the chapter and be put off from finishing your work because you hate it. long commutes can be used to complete work itself. i like to place some books and a file under my worksheet while i write (if i have a seat lol) or you can take this time to plan your time in greater detail

3. Actually plan your time

you dont have to fancy it up with like, brush pens and highlighters. just do something on google sheets or excel. divide the day into appropriate blocks of time.

for me, since i use a focus timer (50+10 or 100+20, rare cases i do 120 with a long break after that) i keep my days in 1hr blocks. so i’d block in about 1hour after i reach home to chill, clean up and so on, 2hrs for homework and the remaining time can be divided by hour/2hours to complete my work. you can tweak the timings to work for you but so far this one suits me pretty well.

4. NEVER RUSH YOUR HOMEWORK AND REVISION WHEN PLANNING!!!!

i repeat, never rush. because when you give only, say, one hour to review 3 chapters and you fail to do so within that time limit, you feel demoralised and hence, will not want to work more. this is a very common issue i believe. sometimes i would rush revise and when i couldnt stick to the timelines, i’ll feel so defeated that i’ll probably binge watch youtube to cure my self-pity LOL

give yourself an ample amount of time. Assign one or two hours a day as ‘delay time’ (this was my free time) so that you can catch up on anything that unfortunately, you couldn’t finish. Assign one day of the week to be the ‘delay day’ -- anything that you cant finish the week before, do it now. this means that you can still ‘save’ your plan even if it screwed up somewhere along the way. it works wonders, believe me! i used to have ‘delay hours’ after training where i would (ahem sadly) study from 2330-0030 if i needed to. while i was tired, i always got my work done.

5. Prioritise

this one needs no explanation. i usually choose which task to start on based on a combination of deadline+importance+graded/non-graded. i start early for graded assignments because they count towards my semester’s final grade and i want to hand up the best quality work i can. find a system which works for you! note: start project work and large assignments early.

you can assign simple tasks first to start the ball rolling, and proceed with harder tasks.

alternatively, if you’re at your prime focus, start with the hardest and scale down to the simple.

6. Make good use of holidays + Wake up early

ok i used to game a LOT and go to training a LOT (still happens now lol) during holidays but i wouldnt get any of my holiday work done.

do your holiday homework first. schedule your time well, and maybe stay home and resist the urge to go out for the first 5 days. finish all your work (again, schedule well) with breaks in between.

thereafter, schedule maybe 3-5 hours a day to revise. if you’re going out with friends, i’d suggest you wake up early to study because once you come home you’re usually dead tired HAHA

so how early is early?? during my o levels study break i would wake up at 0330 (yes, for real) but i slept at 2130 every night. so thats 6 hours of sleep wew but AT LEAST i was very productive. think about it this way: waking up early to study at 0330 makes you more productive than studying till 0330. you don’t have to wake up THIS early, but preferably early enough when the sky’s still dark so that you can fit in those extra hours. DO NOT sacrifice sleep. that’s why you can see i’m still sleeping my usual amount, albeit sleeping and waking earlier.

more perks of waking up early: its quiet outside, the air is cool, your mind gets into the ‘get shit done’ mode, and if you absolutely have to use your phone to search something up, your social media probably won’t be pinging. in other words, early mornings are actually a great time to study! remember to eat something though :>

7. Remove all distractions to prevent possible procrastination

YES i know this is the dreaded one. lock your phone somewhere inconvenient and put the key outside your room. or if you don’t lock it make sure your phone is far away from you as possible. please i know how deadly your phone can get so just put it away.

if you find yourself drifting away and looking at something else, remove that.

alternatively, change up your study environment. you don’t have to go to the library or something (you can if you want to). this is as simple as studying in a different part of the house. a new environment helps to ‘prick’ my mind and help me ignore distractions. i dont know if this is scientifically proven but oh well, worth a try.

8. 2-minute rule

this is something i picked up from @studyquill! it’s pretty helpful (although i was skeptical at first). Tell yourself you’re only going to work for 2 minutes, which helps you get into the workflow. chances are you’ll get so into it (ok not in an excited but rather in a determined way) that you don’t feel like stopping.

if you’ve had a long day and after 2 mins you still don’t get any momentum, just stop and take a 15 min break. that means you’re really too tired and there’s no point in forcing yourself to complete your work.

9. Use reminders

set reminders on your phone for the tasks you need to do. for example, if you’ve planned to start work at 1500, set the reminder to ring 5 minutes before so you have time to gather all your stuff and ready yourself to do work. no excuses!!

set reminders for your breaks as well! those are equally important.

10. Reward yourself

if everything you need to do is done, give yourself a pat on the back. have you been extremely productive? great, treat yourself to your favourite drink/snack. honestly i feel like many of our brains function on the ‘reward’ system. if we reward ourselves for a job well done, we’ll be more willing to complete tasks and stay on time in the future (the brain thinks there’s a reward coming)

remember to take care of your mental health as well! this is one good way to ensure you don’t end up mentally exhausted.

1. Tide - focus timer, meditation, beautiful and calming soundtracks (my fav!)

2. Pendo - everything in one tbh, schedule, to-do list, journal etc. (my fav too!)

3. Forest - focus timer $$$ (free alternative: flora)

4. Donut Dog - focus timer

5. Todoist - minimalist to-do list

6. Minimalist - minimalist to-do list

7. Google Calender - your entire schedule

8. Todait - smart study planner

a quick search will bring out many more! note these are all available on iOS but i’m not sure about google play. you don’t need everything to be productive. i rely only on Tide, Pendo and my iPhone calender and reminders. It’s less about having many ‘tools’ and more about how you properly and wisely utilise them to boost your productivity and manage your time.

I’m so sorry for how long this is, but thank you to you and @s8ncake , @asmos-pet , @aguacats , @dj-night-owl , @avellanna-world for enabling me to write and share this. I am putting it under the cut because it is extremely long, like way too long. I am so sorry.

So AciesGecko on Twitter Piercing Diavolo has been living in my mind rent-free and like Tattoo Shop! AU. Their @ here is the same but they suffered from me tagging them once but here is their tweet that inspired it ( x) (it can also be found on Tumblr here: x)

This was originally found on my Twitter but I have made edits and added more details to indulge everyone because I really like this idea. I don’t have any relationships in it, but it could easily have DiaLuci, Solomon/Asmodeus, and Barbatos/Simeon. I have this currently have Lucifer being Satan’s biological father and Lucifer is a single parent. But anyway now into the actual meat and enjoyment of this Tattoo Shop! AU

Welcome to Royal Art and Design (RAD) owned by Diavolo Rey. (It’s my default last name for Diavolo, in my modern DiaLuci fic his name is Diago and someone suggested Rey because it meant King in Spanish and so it’s just stuck.) Diavolo was supposed to take over his father’s company but fell in love with tattooing instead.

This caused major tension and Diavolo’s dad just thinks Diavolo is being rebellious and will one day realize his mistake and crawl back to his Dad but as Diavolo is in his late twenties to early thirties, Diavolo doesn’t regret the tattoo shop. Diavolo is covered with piercings and tattoos that he shows off constantly. Something that also upsets his father because it isn’t professional to have all those tattoos and piercings.

The shop’s main receptionist is Barbatos, a childhood friend of Diavolo. Barbatos’ family lived on the Rey’s property and were their butlers. Barbatos is about 10 years older than Diavolo but they are close friends and Barbatos would follow Diavolo anywhere. Barbatos has far fewer tattoos and piercings than Diavolo. Most of his tattoos are covered except for the ones on his hands.

Then you have the six “brothers”. They aren’t by blood but by choice. They all grew up in (and out of) the foster system.

The oldest is Lucifer, a renowned tattoo artist (honestly no one knows how Diavolo convinced Lucifer to work with him) Lucifer has a unique tattoo style, something that is sought after. Diavolo loved and adored Lucifer’s style and could recognize his work from a mile away. Diavolo begged and pleaded with Lucifer to work at his shop and was glad they came up with the agreement.

I haven’t decided yet but Lucifer is either covered in tattoos, that he always has covered. Long sleeve button-ups and long pants are a part of Lucifer’s everyday wear. Something Diavolo has told him isn’t necessary. OR Lucifer surprisingly has no tattoos but either way has his ears gauged and an eyebrow piercing and is constantly covered up. (I am leaning towards him being covered in tattoos)

Diavolo constantly compliments Lucifer’s skin and say how it would be a dream to tattoo because he is so pale. Any color would pop and look good and honestly, Diavolo is waiting and hoping for the day, Lucifer lets him tattoo Lucifer. (Spoiler Lucifer will probably let Diavolo tattoo a huge back piece)

Soon after getting out of foster care, Lucifer got a girl pregnant. He didn’t know until he was contacted. Saying how the mother had given up her rights to the child and he could either sign his rights way or take the child. Not wanting his kid in foster care, Lucifer adopted Satan.

So while Lucifer is in his late thirties Satan just turned 18 and is a walking contradiction. He already filled up one of his arms with tattoos and has plenty of piercings, he loves nothing more than to curl up and read books (he wears big chunky black glasses). Lucifer tried his best to be supportive of Satan wanting to get tattoos but also had to play the bad cop and make sure Satan understood how permanent they were and if he really wanted them.

Satan more or less just hangs out at the shop all the time, that he might as well work there too. He interested in Art and is hoping to attend college for it. Diavolo said if Satan wants to intern at RAD and be a tattoo artist all he had to do is say the word and Diavolo is willing to make it happen.

The second oldest of the “brothers” is Mammon. Mammon was more or less a pity case went it comes to getting his job at RAD. He got in and out of trouble and found himself in jail for a bit, gambling and tax fraud isn’t a good mix. During his time Mammon found himself getting prison tattoos and even taught himself how to tattoo. Something that honestly was encouraged because if it allowed him to have a skill he could use once he was out then it was a skill worth him learning.

Once Mammon was released, he found he still had a gambling problem. Lucifer allowed him to crash on his couch and Diavolo put him through the wringer but told Mammon if he could prove himself he earned himself a spot at RAD and Mammon passed with flying colors.

Mammon’s tattoos are old school and traditional but have a uniqueness to them because of where he learned his skill set. It’s also evident in how Mammon moves around the piece and even how he holds his equipment. Mammon isn’t a fan of piercings, “they hurt too much!” “You have tattoos on YOUR FACE!” He does have his tongue and septum pierced though.

Third is Leviathan, an otaku but has beautiful Japanese-style tattoos. Even went abroad to Japan to learn about tattooing. In between appointments you can find him either watching anime or playing some game on his phone. Levi had his tongue pierced for a bit but went ahead and committed to having his tongue split. Definitely talked Diavolo into having a fish tank and Levi own reptiles (Is this important to the story? Not really but good to know)

The fourth is Asmodeus. He is the head piercer at RAD and it shows. Asmodeus only has tattoos on his fingers and they are small dots, very minimalist. He also helps Barbatos with receptionist duties. Loves wearing crop tops to show off his belly ring. And flirts with everyone, mainly because it hard to be nervous when you have such a gorgeous person flirting with you.

Finally, the last two “brothers” are the only ones that are related. The twins, Beelzebub and Belphegor. Their style of tattoos are the complete opposite. While Beelzebub focuses on lots of colors, Belphegor works in black and white with maybe one or two colors. Beelzebub is really fit and has full sleeves on both arms and one leg. Belphegor has both hands tattooed and one-half sleeve. He has a hard time finding and committing to a tattoo design, so he waits until it’s perfect. He also is one of the only people Diavolo knows that can fall asleep while being tattooed, it’s quite impressive.

Then you have the current interns Solomon and Simeon (and MC if you want to include them) The application process was intense and it means something to be an intern at RAD because you are honestly learning from the best and learning multiple different styles and perspectives.

Solomon is learning how to pierce too if it’s because of the attraction to the head piercer well no one needs to know about that. While Simeon is strictly doing tattoos and focuses on traditional styles, nothing too modern and not too many colors/ complex colors; “You can’t use the color straight from the tube Simeon, that’s just not right!”

Simeon is the legal guardian to his godson Luke, who is constantly found at the shop too. Energetic and loves to draw then show it off to everyone. Simeon is a little old to be an intern but Diavolo took the chance with him. Something Lucifer disagrees with.

“Wasn’t he apart of your family at one point?” Diavolo asked at some point

“Yes, but he was adopted. We are brothers no more”. was Lucifer’s only response, and didn’t talk any further on the topic.

That’s all I have at this point, but it’s a lot and I just need it in my life. Someone help me do punk edits of the boys. Like maybe I’ll write a small piece on it eventually, but this could easily turn into a huge work that I don’t currently have the time to plan or write. Because tbh I would make DiaLuci a thing for sure, but add Simbarb and Solodeus just for fun or have them as a side relationship.
