OMG It’s You (Part 6)
YouTube! Fem reader x Stray Kids
Summary: Y/N’s YouTube channel is taking off after her reactions to Stray Kids MV God’s Menu. Now she’s making videos nonstop along with working a full time job. What would happen if she got offered a job of a lifetime and met the boys of her succession?
⚠️Warnings⚠️: rambling, rambling, and more rambling

Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 2.5 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6.5 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Y/N’s POV
I felt a sense of being overwhelmed as I attempted to set up the PO Box address. Gasping for breath, I went to my desk to power up all the necessary devices. I sank into my chair while waiting for my computers to boot up. I had just started reading an email when I received a call from the post office. After logging into my laptop, I returned to the email to continue reading.
Dear Y/N,
We closely follow your channel and greatly appreciate your insightful reviews on K-pop albums. On behalf of everyone here at JYP Entertainment, we are pleased to offer you exclusive access to Stray Kids' newest mini album, Oddinary. We kindly request that you refrain from releasing the video until the official release date. We would also request early access to the video to arrange for Stray Kids to watch it together before the release. We sincerely appreciate your continuous support for Stray Kids. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Park Jin-young
I almost wanted to roll my eyes when he asked me not to release the video until everyone could access the mini-album. Like, I would even think about doing that anyway. I click on the attachment below where the mini album sits, waiting to be listened to. I look back at all the stuff I brought from the post office and drop my shoulders. ‘Do I want to record this video first, or wait and make a video about all the stuff I got from the fans?’ That thought alone was already making my head hurt. “On one hand, if I go ahead and listen to the mini album, all I’ll have to do is edit it. However, I’ll have all these packages and letters littering my room.
On the other hand, if I do the stuff from the fans, I might be unable to record the mini album video before it releases.” I say aloud to myself. I knew that no longer sitting here would prevent me from doing anything.
After making up my mind, I decided to make a short video showing all the stuff I got from the post office and then review the mini album. So that way, I can edit it and have it ready. In the meantime, I can start opening up the mail I’ve gotten from the fans. Satisfied with the plan I’ve conjured in my head, I get started on executing my plan.
Before I go any further, I type up a professional email to JYP thanking him for the access and promise not to release the video until everyone else has access.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After creating a brief video showcasing the items I received and promising to film myself opening the packages, I uploaded it to my channel. Next, I retrieved the attachment for the mini album. I reached for my headphones from the rack on my desk and plugged them into my laptop. After conducting thorough sound checks to ensure the viewers and I could hear the music clearly, I proceeded to freshen up and grab something to eat once everything was set up to my liking.
Returning to my seat, I feel refreshed after showering and having a satisfying meal. I lean back and settle in, cleaning my teeth thoroughly with brushing and flossing. I need to present myself well to my audience, and I want to avoid any distractions, like food stuck between my teeth, that could detract from the experience. The thought of it gives me chills.
Grabbing my favorite pair of over-ear headphones, I carefully place them over my ears, ensuring they fit snugly. I double-check the microphone to ensure it's picking up my voice clearly, adjusting the distance as needed. Taking a moment to compose myself, I settle into my chair and take a deep breath to calm my nerves. With everything in place, I press the button to turn on my camera and count to five before flashing a warm smile and beginning my address to everyone watching.
“Hello Lovelies! So, I have some fascinating news for all of you. I received an email from a certain company and have been given early access to this artist's mini-album. That’s right! JYP has given me early access to Stray Kids newest Mini Album!” I start excitingly clapping to myself and smiling as wide as I can. “Now, while I may be getting to listen to this early, this video will not hit my channel until the actual release date comes. I will also upload this video once everyone has access to it. As most of you know, I listen to the whole album and then talk about it—what I like about it, what stands out most, etc. Still, in the end, I will give this album an honest review and rate it from 1 to 10. So, let’s get started.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Third Person POV
The boys were called into one of the offices, and you could say they did not feel this would be a good meeting. Even when they get to the room, they see their boss already there with a laptop. Chan, getting ready to take the heat from their boss for the group, gets stopped by JYP. “I didn't call you here because you did anything. I called you here for quite the opposite.” The boys were about to ask him what they were called in for, but their boss beat them. “I have something that I want you boys to watch. I think you will enjoy this. Leave the laptop when you’re done and press play when ready.” He tells them, leaving them with the laptop. Once he leaves the room and the boys can no longer hear his footsteps, they rush to the computer. They hesitate before pressing play, but what they see leaves them speechless.
It’s a video of Y/N, and they see that their boss gave her early access to their comeback album. Before they get too far into the video, they get chairs to be comfortable while watching her listen to their music. Changbin brings up the idea of connecting the laptop to the projector so it's not crowded around a small screen. They all agreed and fixed everything; all they had to do was press play on the laptop. Once everything is set, Chan clicks on the play button. All attention turns to the screen showing their favorite YouTuber.
“So, Stray Kids newest comeback album is called Oddinary and I will edit in a picture of what the cover looks like.” Before talking about it, she adds a picture of what their cover looks like. “Just from looking at it, I would say it looks pretty dope, like a screen-like mannequin head with screws showing out of it. Their color scheme is green, black, silver, and maybe purple. The titles on the album are, in order, Venom. Maniac. Charmer.Freeze. Lonely St. Waiting For Us with Bang Chan, Lee Know, Seungmin, and I.N. Muddy Water with Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, and Felix. I like all these song titles. Waiting For Us will be a tearjerker, so I must have my tissues on standby.”The boys start laughing and nudging each other. She bites her bottom lip while moving her cursor to the first song. “I’m going to listen to the songs in order, and I might save Waiting For Us last since I want to make sure Muddy Water gets a fair chance. Plus, I would cry in the end. Okay, without further ado, let’s get started.” The boys watch and gauge her reaction to each song. She tells them that she will talk about each song after listening to them all. When she reaches the end, she stops playing the last song. “Wow. I’m trying to save all my thoughts until after I listen to Waiting For Us. Why am I so nervous about listening to this? I know it will be a good song, but this one might knock it out of the park.” She shakes her head. “Alright, let’s do this. I’ve got my tissues on hand.” The boys laugh with her. The music starts to play, and her reaction changes right away.
Chan sees her go ahead and grab a tissue. Lee Know sees that her eyes start to look shiny. Changbin says that she’s gripping the tissue in her hand tightly. Hyunjin notices that she’s trying to keep her face neutral but fails to smile. Han watches as a stray tear falls down her face, even though she’s happy. Felix’s eyes follow her hand as she wipes her face with the tissue. Seungmin looks as she replays the song again. I.N. watches as she closes her eyes, listening deeply to the words, and tears stream down her face. At the very end, she removes her headphones, looks off to the side, and then laughs.
“I told you I was going to cry. I knew it was inevitable.” The boys smile at the girl on the screen, waiting for her review. “I will give this mini album a 100 out of 10. It has some great aspects to it. I love how each song fits and feels with the album title. There was a reason why I left Waiting For Us last: because I knew I would fall in love with it and did not want to listen to the other tracks. As it turns out, I was right.” She and the boys laugh.
“One thing about listening to a song for the first time is that not all click with you immediately. Everyone is different. Sometimes, it may take a few listens before you think, ‘I dig this song.’ Others will like it right away. I would say that I loved each song, but a couple of songs that didn’t click right away were Venom and Muddy Water. Now, does that mean I don’t like those songs? No, I enjoy them. That’s like the IN LIFE album. At first, The Tortoise and the Hare didn’t click with me. I loved the lyrics and the music, but a couple of parts in the song threw me off. Now that song can be put on repeat, I wouldn’t get tired of hearing it repeatedly. The moral of all the nonsense I’m saying is that sometimes songs don’t click right away but end up promising.”
The boys, watching her intently, wait for her final words. “I made two edits of this video since I knew I wanted to send one to the guys.” The boys freeze up as she looks straight into the camera before continuing. “Stray Kids. If you’re watching this right now, I want you to know how proud I am of all of you. You’ve come this far, and you’re still doing an amazing job. You keep showing Stays daily that you still have tricks up your sleeves.” She smiles at them. “Keep up the good work, but take care of yourselves. That means taking breaks, ensuring you eat, and getting the necessary sleep.” She points at the camera, “That means you too, Christopher.” She raises her eyebrows. “Don’t make me fly over there and force you to sleep.” The boys start to tease their leader with her mocking words. He waves their hands away, trying to listen to what she has to say. “Well, that’s it for the video! I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did until we meet again. Bye!” She smiles, waving at the camera.
(A/N: I decided to add this in because why not 🤷🏻♀️ The reader gets first access to Stray Kids mini album and Stray Kids get early access of the reader reacting to their newest comeback. I’ll be doing a second part to this chapter specifically to the reader videoing herself opening the packages from her fans (Including the boys 🤪)
hey, i was curious about something from ep 6. jimin talks about filming with the kids for sgmb, and jungkook says he saw the video. but sgmb was filmed the day before they left for tokyo, and their conversation was just a few days after that. there’s no way the finished product was done by then, right? (especially considering that music video wasn’t scheduled to come out for many months) can we assume jungkook is talking about some other video of jimin and the kids or maybe some raw footage? the timeline is just interesting to me!
Hi anon,
While there's really no way for us to know, I do have a couple of suspicions. But first, I would always recommend if any specific wording seems to stick with you abut anything the members say, please remember that they do speak in a language that often doesn't have a 1:1 translation to English. I don't have anyone to point you at since I don't spend any time in BTS social media outside of tumblr but I believe there are some army translators out there that can corroborate the translations.
Now, onto the video in question. There are a couple of hints I've gleaned over the years regarding BTS's work process and access to monitoring their own footage. In case you're not aware, the raw data on the big ol' fancy cameras is quite large and it takes some doing to get that data moved to here it needs to be for editing.
But we all know how involved BTS is with monitoring their own content after most takes. How many times do we see 3J asking for one more take in that Butter dance practice?? So we know they will utilize the monitor station to review directly after takes. But I've seen them point a lower quality camera at one of those monitors and watch the output later. You can see this type of footage in the SGMB shooting sketch as well. Here's a quick bit:
We see the entire cast gathered around a monitor but then it cuts to a camera recording the monitor. That means there is a person pointing a camera at the monitor itself. My theory is this extra footage is uploaded to some shared location for ease of review while the actual footage takes whatever time it requires to properly manage the quality. I would also assume that all of the members have access to this shared space to review whatever they'd like.
All just theories though. I know there are a few of you that have reached out to me who actually work in film and I'd be curious to know if this sounds realistic or not.
I think the shoot was arranged but they (Alex, Louise and the publicists) didn't count on the fandom being savvy, spotting Backgrid in the pics and realising they had been staged. They quickly removed them because they were an embarrassment because a lot of people have the idea Alex is beyond publicity stunts (no he isn't. When an artist signs a contract they agree to partake in any publicity necessary and if that includes fake shoots so be it).//
Giiiiirrrrllll! I sent a post sharing almost exactly the same theories as you but my tumblr keeps glitching so I don't think my messages are being received across the board (we'll see how this goes) but YES!!!
Alex has a reputation for being private so I think it goes over people's heads that he does infact participate in PR and has done so since the Alexa days. His reasoning behind it is anyone's guess, I do think at times it is for his own ego. For example I do think some pap shots across the years have been a way to 'show off' his girlfriends, I also think it's possible his girlfriends might be the ones tipping them off but due to his 'control freak' sense of nature I highly doubt he is not aware nor involved in one way or another.
I agree 10000000% those Italy pics were staged, I was actually surprised by this one and have been curious ever since what his reasoning was for them. Did news about Alexa and Tom come out around the time?! LOL! I also think he had them taken down due to public backlash. He definitely cares about public opinion, you see how disheartened he got about the reviews and audience reception for TBHC and The Car.
The Sushi pap shots another dead giveaway they were staged, it's a celebrity PR hot spot and let's be honest what team of Papparazzi are out on the prowl looking to locate Alex Turner and his nobody girlfriend!? Then you've got the ever miserable looking NYC pap shots also pre arranged and its evident through the video footage. Alex looks like he wishes to be anywhere else than beside his 'lover'. The question is WHY?
My theories relate to the remaining mystery of Lou's second album. We're already aware through the bread crumbing that it was in the works at some stage. We saw pics/videos/word of Al's music friends working on something with her, Lou hinting at writing, Lou hinting at filming some sort of promo/doco that never got released in partnership with some company, Lou saying herself a second album is 'coming' etc etc. Oh! And there's the other miserable 'anniversary' photoshoot they were spotted doing together in the park in NYC. Could it be possible the PR/Pap shots were to put the feelers out and gain some traction on the couple to start the promo/teasing of Lou's next release?! I'm dying to know if this is a project Alex will gladly have his name associated to or if he'll 'Deep Joy' it as he did with her music videos.
This might be one I'll be alone on but I'm also suspicious of the Greek video footage. I mean just the timing of its release. I find it interesting and also thoughtful of the people who filmed it that they held onto it for like what was it like two weeks before uploading online they were spotted. The uploader didn't interact with Al or Lou so why did they choose to hold on to it? Usually, when a fan encounters someone they admire they tend to excitedly share on their socials sooner rather than later. Also, if I recall correctly there was a lot of speculation going on at the time that Alex and Lou hadn't seen each other for months on end and this footage was 'evidence' that opinion was incorrect.
Public figures/Celebrity and PR Agencies are getting more creative in how they 'sell' themselves and/or their clients, some go for the obvious and clearly staged shots while other times they go for the 'natural', 'candid' shots that are staged but are designed to appear otherwise.
On that note the AM boys are more business savvy than many of us tend to give them credit for!
If this was PR for Louise’s album wouldn’t it have been timed with information about her actual album coming out? So far there isn’t even a hint of her album and AM doesn’t seem to use this kind of PR when it’s their own album so what is this all for?!
[002-A24] Eat, Laugh, Launch
Summary — ✈︎The egg-rocket launched by Akuta and the others ate up all the rain clouds, and now the sky is cleared up. The stalls at the festivals are flourishing, and the club members work together to provide hospitality to the guests.
Characters— ✈︎ Ushio, Nanaki, Kiroku, Akuta, Muneuji
Location: Tomioka Hachiman Shrine in Shodoshima
Kaede: Uwah〜 There's so many people! All the tourists seem to be gathering around!
(Everyone started to gather around right in time for the festival… I’m glad everything ended up working out.)
…Hm?
Customer A: Excuse me, I’d like the 3 pack of your baby castellas that come with the special syrup.
Ushio: Alright, please give me a moment…!
Customer B: I’d like a 5 pack over here!
Ushio: O-Okay, right away…!
Customer C: OMG! I’m so happy! This special syrup tastes super good! I wanna take a couple as a souvenir! Hey mister, could I get a 10 pack please〜?
Ushio: Gh…! Uh…! Okay!
Kaede: Wow. The crowd's growing so fast…
Nanaki: Right? It's been like that ever since the start of the festival.
Kaede: Nanaki-kun and Kiroku-kun! Good work today!
Kiroku: ……You…too……。
Nanaki: Umm, Chief. If you want… If you don't mind… We could lend a hand.
I was thinking of helping out with Kurama’s stall. At this rate, the customers will get bored having to wait around.
Will that be okay in terms of our points?
Kiroku: ……I’ll……do my……best.
Kaede: Eh!?
(Nanaki-kun and Kiroku-kun both offered to help out by themselves…)
…Of course it's fine! If you need any help, feel free to ask me anything! Let’s do our best giving hospitality!
「OMOTENASHI BATTLE」
Kaede: Thank you both for helping us give hospitality! The customers looked really satisfied too! Right, Ushio-kun?
Ushio: …Well, it went way faster than it could've if I was by myself. It's only natural for that to happen with more people…
……
…Thanks for helping me out. Here, it's something for the trouble.
It's the baby castella we were selling at the stall.
Kiroku: ……He’s giving……A gift……
Nanaki: Let's hope it doesn't magically start raining again. … Thank you for the food.
Munch munch……!?
It's delicious…
Ushio: … Hm.
Nanaki: The moment it entered my mouth, the aroma flooded my senses. The mellow taste of the syrup felt like I was in the middle of a meadow…
Before you can even savor the taste, the sweet sponge of the cake lightly touches on your tongue. It feels like flowers starting to bloom…
Both feelings are in a wondrous state of harmony; one which you can't achieve without the perfect proportion of the otherーー It’s an amazing combination of both sweet and salty flavors that evoke an almost nostalgic feeling…
What the hell… I could hear Jim Hen’s[1] guitar solo start playing in my head before I could even swallow the first bite…
Kaede: Wow, amazing! Nanaki-kun, you’re really good at doing food reviews!
Nanaki: Ah, no, it just… tasted too good…
Kiroku: ………
Kaede: (Kiroku looks really focused while he's eating… Cute.)
Oh right, Ushio-kun.
Ushio: What.
Kaede: The ladies who set up the baby castella machine were praising you. They were saying that if you bought all the ingredients but only forgot the syrup you should've just told them.
They said that it was the first time they ever had such delicious sweets. They wanted to say thank you.
Ushio: … I was just doing my job.
Kaede: (He says that, but his cheeks are turning red. He's getting embarrassed.)
ーーEveryone did a really good job today. The fireworks were amazing, and both the tourists and the locals were super happy with the result. The festival was a big success!
Nanaki: And the music?
Kaede: Of course it was amazing too! They said that it was far better than any sound they ever used before, and the music was popular amongst both younger and older people!
Nanaki: Really!?
Kaede: Yes really. The video of the performance already got uploaded. The sync with the fireworks was really amazing. The view count is really good too.
Nanaki: I see!
Ah, I mean. …I did my best. Yes.
Kaede: Kiroku-kun’s lantern is also really popular too. Since it's cute, but also a bit frightening, it's naturally attracting a lot of attentionーー
Kiroku: ……Eh……?
Kaede: The place in front of the lantern is a really popular photo spot. A lot of people seem to be posting pictures they've taken with it on social media.
Kiroku: R……Really…? But… it's… not…… finished……
Kaede: Being unfinished isn't as bad as you think it is.
Kiroku: ………
Kaede: Luckily, thanks to the sunny weather, a lot of people came to the festival, so the organizers were happy. Everyone looked like they were really enjoying themselves and Iーー I… I was really… moved…
Ushio: … Surprisingly, for an adult, you're a real crybaby y’know.
Kaede: S-Sorry. I think a bit of the sea breeze got in my eye.
(Anyways, everyone’s hard work finally paid off. And it’s all thanks to that kidーー)
Akuta: ‘Sup! I’m here to win all the Kurodemy Director’s Awards! [1]
Muneuji: Good work, everyone.
Kaede: Akuta-kun and Muneuji-kun! Good work today!
Akuta: Ah〜 Those takoyaki were super good! The okonomiyaki is cooked perfectly, and the oden is packed full of flavor〜! Street food is just the best!
Nanaki: Sigh… Saku-chan-sensei even told us that we were gonna be eating at the afterparty, yet you still filled yourself up on food… Did you forget?
Akuta: Nah〜 I remember pre・tty・well〜 I didn't buy anything! Every time I passed a stall, the owners were just giving stuff to me free of charge!
Ushio: You must've been staring with big ass eyes, like a starving puppy begging for food.
Kiroku: Isotake… definitely has…… a face that…… makes me want…… to give him…… food…
Muneuji: Everyone was very kind, so we didn’t want to refuse any offerings given to us. I did tell Isotake that he should’ve saved the food for later though.
Kaede: He just couldn’t resist huh…
Akuta: It’s ALLL good! My stomach is infinite, like a black hole! I’ve only filled like 10% of it!
Sakujiro: Ah, so everyone is gathered up. It’s about time we head off to the restaurant. The one we visited when we first came here that served delicious Hishio-don.
Kaede: Since we’re leaving Shodoshima tomorrow, let’s all eat together this time.
Akuta: Hi・Shi・O!! Hi・Shi・O!!
Kiroku: ………
Nanaki & Ushio: ……… (Nods)
Muneuji: So, everyone is coming?
Kiroku: …… It looks… like it… but...
Muneuji: ………
Ushio: ………
Kiroku: …… Are you two… ok…ay…?
…… You shouldn’t… fight……
Akuta: What’s up what’s up? You’re gonna give me half of your Hishio-don, Kiroku?
Seriously? YAYY! Thanks a bunch!
Kiroku: ……!? That’s wroーー
Akuta: Ehh, you said you’re gonna give me your side of miso soup too? You’re seriously the best Kiroku! Thanks thanks~~~!
Kiroku: ……I didn’t… say……
Kaede: (Those two don’t seem to be on the same wavelength at all but…)
Anyways, let’s go!
Nanaki: When you say you launched itーー you mean you launched that egg!?
Akuta: Yeah! It went off like BOOM!
Kaede: Hm? What did?
Nanaki: Oh nothing, we’re talking about a movie.
Keep your voice down.
Muneuji: We negotiated these terms with the egg.
Nanaki: You managed to communicate with it? That egg… It didn’t seem like it was a living thing though.
Muneuji: I don’t believe it had any biological reactions. But, it did feel like it had its own will.
Akuta: Maybe it’s like a communication thingy from the aliens? Maybe they’re controlling it with a remote or something, like a toy car〜!
Nanaki: So where’s the egg now?
Akuta: We searched for it around the mountain buuut… We couldn’t find it at all!
Muneuji: I believe it might’ve exploded into bits and pieces.
Nanaki: Uwah… Seriously…?
Akuta: Weeell! I don’t think that’s true! If it’s that egg, I’m sure that we’ll meet it again.
At leastーー That’s the kinda feeling I get.
Nanaki: That’s some confidence you got there from only your gut feeling… but whatever. In any case, let’s not tell Kinugawa-kun about any of this.
He got really attached to that egg. He’d probably get super upset if we told him it exploded or something.
Muneuji: Agreed. Let’s just tell him that it returned back to the sea on its own.
My music video review ~vol.13~
※I recommend reading the link below before reading the review. https://www.tumblr.com/aruz11/743804475824914432/this-is-the-first-post?source=share
Title: Wonderful Summoner
Post date: 15 Aug 2009
length: 2:03
song: Wonderful Heaven
youtube
This time I review the video named Wonderful Summoner, which I posted on August 15, 2009. Like A-V-O-N-E-J, I originally hadn't planned to make a music video for this song. However, after receiving requests from viewers who wanted to see a video using this song, I decided to give it a try. That said, it was a challenging project because there weren't any reference samples to follow, and I wasn't familiar with this song before starting production. Nowadays, it's common for me to make music videos with less-used songs, but at the time, it felt like a significant challenge. Let's get started.
About the song
The song is from the game Touhou Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, part of the Touhou Project series. As mentioned earlier, I hadn't heard the song before, nor had I played Touhou Scarlet Weather Rhapsody, so it took a while for me to develop a sense of attachment to it. However, the more I listened, the more captivated I became by its unique charm. The early and middle parts of the track evoke a carefree and whimsical character, while the chorus transitions into something grand and befitting a final showdown. As an aside, I later learned that Touhou Scarlet Weather Rhapsody isn't a shoot-'em-up game like other titles in the series but rather a fighting game. It made me want to try it out.
Features of this video
As the title Wonderful Summoner suggests, the video aimed to spotlight Yuna as a summoner. However, looking back, I feel the final product didn't quite capture the essence of Yuna as well as I'd wanted. The video's tone was primarily funny, with some serious moments mixed in, but the balance felt off, leaving the result somewhat muddled. Although I used many of Yuna's lines, I struggled to tie everything together into a cohesive theme. This left me dissatisfied, and at one point—around five years after its upload—I considered remaking the video. Unfortunately, I never found the time to remake it. Like A-V-O-N-E-J, this video also features a lot of dynamic screen movement. It seems that was my preferred style at the time. I do feel sorry for the viewers, including the one who requested it, as I couldn't fully deliver on my vision. However, working on this project allowed me to recognize the potential of Yuna's lines, which became an important takeaway for future videos. Even if a project doesn't turn out as expected, as long as it leads to growth, it's not a failure. That's what this video taught me.
My favorite scenes
0:00~0:13 Yuna's lines may not be particularly powerful, but her clear pronunciation makes them ideal for mixing.
0:46~0:52 The laughing scene is a fun piece of material to use.
1:10~1:34 Tidus yawning is a rare scene to use, so it still stands out to me.
That's all for now. Thank you for visiting. See you next time.
Following up directly on yesterday's post, one of the most notable events that happened during Season 3, one that was covered with a lot of love by the SiIvaGunner team in MAGFest 2019: SiIvaGunner Presents - High Quality Ripping, was the Nostalgia Critic takeover. Somehow, despite running the blog for half a year's time at this point, I still haven't ever gotten to touch on this event, despite being one of the more fondly remembered parts of the Season. And, well, there IS kind of a reason for that?
See, what initially started as an event celebrating old YouTube reviewers in general (hence Inspector Gadget's presence during it and in the album), transitioned into a purely-Nostalgia Critic event - but rather than celebrating Doug Walker's legacy in particular, the takeover took a different approach. Playing on Walker's gimmick as a reviewer in particular, the event was focused specifically on being a "nostalgia"-event - in other words, aiming to specifically bring us in the audience back to the days of Season 1 through every rip uploaded. This theme wasn't quite as...immediately apparent as many other takeovers, be it with rips like Totally Shaaking Out Right Now in the Harlem Shakeover, or Fell From a High Place (Reprise) during the Minecraft music event. Because while those events pretty radically changed to a core theme, this nostalgia-themed event instead saw the channel return to a status quo it once had - reuploads of several prior-lost Season 1 rips, new rips that were intentionally simplistic and often off-key, and an overall focus on the kinds of jokes that were all the rage in Season 1.
It was a genuinely really fun time, yet it was simultaneously hard to think of a fitting rip to represent it all with - in my eyes, it's one of those events that only truly worked in the moment, surrounded by all these rips that formed a cohesive whole. But Fragile Snowman (Remastered) is as close as it gets, I think - a loving remake of a true classic of Season 1. I've talked before of just how much I love it when rips of all sorts get dug back up for another shot at live with Violet Snow Memories from earlier this year, and this event was really the first time that we ever got a concentrated dose of that feeling throughout an entire takeover - and despite the rip of today's post only being two years old at that point, the nostalgia for it had already set in for me.
As described by Chaze the Chat in the aforementioned MAGFest panel, a big part of the fun with Season 1 was its sense of...spontaneousness, that you never really knew what to expect due to there simply not being much of any expectations set up by prior channel history in the first place. And as a result, we got a lot of rips much like the original Fragile Snowman - a mashup between Snowman as featured in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Fragile by Tech N9ne. There's a lot of rips like this even today, mashing up more chill video game music with hip-hop music that doesn't necessarily have much memetic quality, and while a lot of them can slip through the cracks of the SiIvaGunner audience, Fragile Snowman really did stick - enough to warrant two remasters made of it, with Fragile Snowman (Remastered) being the final stop the rip's made thus far.
There's so many small things fixed and tweaked in this final remastered version, yet it still sounds exactly as you'd imagine a mashup between the two songs to sound - which is, really, the best tell for it being an excellent remaster. The Nostalgia Critic takeover, while less bombastic and loud than many other events, was one that most every SiIvaGunner fan loved specifically because it focused on something we were ALL fans of - SiIvaGunner itself - and reminded us of just how far we'd come in just two short years. All these years later, there was indeed another event somewhat similar to this Nostalgia Critic takeover that happened just recently in Season 7, but...that's a story for another time.
An ode to the iRiver iHP-120
For whatever reason, I've found myself deeply nostalgic for high school as of late. And for me, that is intractable from nostalgia for what is perhaps the peak mp3 player ever made:
The iRiver iHP-120 was released in 2003, my sophomore year of high school, and it changed my life. This thing held an astounding 10GB of music—for comparison, most mp3 players at the time were flash based, and held 128 or 256 MB of music. The only big competitor at the time was the 1st generation iPod, a mac-exclusive device that transferred data over firewire and had to be synced using the fledgling iTunes. Juxtapose that to iRiver, who took what I like to call the "we don't give a fuck" approach:
When you plugged in the iHP-120 with USB 2.0, it just showed up as an external hard drive—you could throw whatever you wanted on there. Naturally, it could read mp3 files, but this thing introduced me to the world of audio codecs and processing in a way nothing could have prepared me. WMA files worked fine (a big deal at the time because of DRM issues, during the heyday of KaZaA and Limewire). You want to play uncompressed .WAV files? No problem, put them on there. FLAC files? Absolutely, let your audiophile freak flag fly. Fucking OGG Vorbis files played on this thing. Hell, you could put text files on here and read them.
(The firmware for these was also basically open-source, and people did even crazier stuff with them. By the time I retired my player, it could do gapless playback, crossfading, 10-band equalizing, normalization and more. I think I also changed the boot screen to a picture of Sailor Moon.)
But the magic didn't end at uploading music to the iHP-120—controlling this thing was more intuitive than any other device around at the time. All of your music was displayed on the player in whatever folder structure you loaded onto the device—navigating the music was as simple as using Windows Explorer. You had your standard play/pause, skip forward/back and volume controls on the front joystick, but what are the other buttons for?
Yeah. This thing was also a portable recorder. At anytime you could just hold down the Rec button and start recording with the onboard mic, or using an external input (more on that later). On the right side, an A-B Interval control. You ever wanted to just listen to one part of a song on repeat to learn the lyrics? Just hold down the button. Lastly a hold switch to disable control inputs while it was in your pocket—no accidentally pausing the music.
Okay, back to the external input mentioned before. The top of the iHP-120 is wild.
The top I/O panel of the iRiver iHP-120, with 4 jacks.
From right to left, you have a 3.5mm headphone jack (naturally), a 2.5mm microphone jack, the remote control port (more on this in a bit), and in white you have Line In/Out jacks which you could use to record as well as just plug in a second pair of headphones for a friend—jacks which support both 3.5mm analog input, as well as 3.5mm TOSLINK optical cables.
The TOSLINK 3.5mm male plug. A plug I only ever encountered on this device and the Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium, a sound card I wrote a review of in 2009 which seems to still be up at PC Gamer and reading it now I don't know how any of my writing was ever published, let alone in print.
Chances are good you've never encountered this, it's phenomenally uncommon, and TOSLINK as a whole largely died with the emergence of HDMI—but this fucking mp3 player could both record and transmit fiber optic audio in uncompressed stereo or lossy 7.1 surround sound. In high school, I would plug the iHP-120 into our home theatre and listened to Porcupine Tree's Stupid Dream on repeat (side tangent, I'm pretty sad 5.1 album recording never really caught on, but the Dolby Atmos music format is better in every way, and I'm grateful Apple is bringing it into the mainstream).
"Okay, so we have an music player/text reader/voice recorder with optical audio, and basically every codec under the sun, what else could you go on about Erika?"
-you, the person reading this
THE REMOTE
Let me take you back to 2003. I was a depressed theatre kid teenager who would listen to Rooney on repeat on my Koss UR40s while crying over a girl who wanted nothing to do with me.
The Koss UR40 Headphones I wore like a fashion accessory everyday.
The other thing I wore everyday besides those headphones? Baggy cargo pants (it was acceptable at the time, I swear). Inside the right cargo pocket was my iRiver iHP-120, and clipped to the velcro flap of that cargo pocket was the iHP-115R remote control.
The iHP-120 remote unit
Every function of the iHP-120 could be controlled from this little fucker. Play/pause and stop buttons. Volume, skip track and recording are all here on rocker switches. You could even change the fucking bitrate of playback on this little thing, all without taking the actual mp3 player out of your pocket because the LCD screen on the remote has all the same info you'd get on the main unit.
The remote itself connected to the iRiver with that big plug you can see in the picture above (shamelessly stolen from Nathan Edwards who I worked with at PC Gamer in the late 2000s and only while writing this post discovered has already written a much more professional ode to the beauty of the iHP-120 this year).
You would plug your headphones into the remote, (or in my case you could also plug in your 1988 Chevrolet 2500 suburban's tape deck adaptor and have controls at your fingertips. No more distracted driving).
An image of a 1988 Chevorlet 2500 diesel Suburban. Not super relevant but god I miss my high school suburban. We would take the rear and middle benches out and put a queen-size mattress in the back, which 9 of my friends would ride on as we went to Little Caesar's for lunch. Also, cars just looked way fucking better back then.
I think I'm about done waxing nostalgic, but I really do miss the days of discrete devices—I kind of find myself fighting back against my smartphone. I have a camera I carry around, a pen and paper planner and writing notebook, and a kindle for reading. There's something appealing about not having my phone be my access to music either—rather, having a device that I just threw my music on and it plays it really well was rad. The iHP-120 was really fucking rad.
What are some of the youtubers you listen to? Give me like, top 5, any you'd reccommend
okay well Red Letter Media is my big channel right now, I put their stuff on and just chill out more than anything else right now, so I’m gonna list a few others that I don’t really talk about much.
Folding Ideas has put out a bunch of really great video essays with profound introspection on top of some of the most amazing analysis I’ve seen from any video essayists. If you’re into Hbomberguy I think you’d also enjoy him quite a bit.
Drawfee is a lot of fun, I love listening to them joke around while they draw silly stuff, and their Drawtectives series is amazing and the world they’ve created there is wonderful. They’ve got a wonderful dynamic in their videos and are another channel I’ll put on just to feel like I’m hanging out with someone.
Guaranteed Video (ran by Neil Cicierega and co). Recently they’ve started playing bad games they find online in a series called Video Game Police and it’s very silly with all the humor you’d expect from Neil and friends. I love listening to their Audio series at work and go back to their episodes on Ernest frequently.
Nyx Fears has done some amazing videos about disturbing internet phenomena and reviews horror films on top of making some kick ass music. I have met her in person at a local show and she’s amazing, please check her out!!
Caitlin Doughty, AKA Ask A Mortician, I really enjoy hearing about innovations in green burial and different cultural practices surrounding death so it’s great to listen to if you’re curious about things like that.
Honorable mentions to Dead Meat, Christine McConnell, Rachel Maksy, Defunctland, FilmCow, EdAtlin, Jack Saint, SnapCube, Sarah Zedig, Tasting History, Nico Animations, Todd in the Shadows, and TomSka. I don’t watch them nearly as much as these other ones, and some of them don’t upload nearly as much as others, but I enjoy them all the same.
Reviewing Every UKISS Release: By Unpopular Demand ~ NEVERLAND
This release, by no exaggeration, permanently altered the direction of my life. This album is just hit after hit, and oscillates between adrenaline rush and sobbing loudly from the abrupt mood swings between songs, and I wouldn't have had it any other way.
And yeah, this was supposed to be posted months ago but when I was grabbing screenshots, the post glitched and never saved and I rage quit writing this, but I'm back now!
NEVERLAND - 2nd Studio Album | 2011.09.01
This was so big when it came out, like I think if you were an international fan of K-pop at the time, you'd 100% know this song. Like there were download links for it everywhere, dance covers, fan uploads, it was crazy. We were so sure they were going to get their first music show win, but in classic UKISS fashion, they overlapped with another titanic comeback and had to settle for second.
So there was a little docuseries about them in 2011, when exactly it took place, I'm not entirely sure, but I'm fairly certain it was during NEVERLAND promotions. It was technically about all of the members, and the work that goes into being an idol. Some funny bits I remember about it -
Kevin accidentally stomping on Soohyun's foot during practice
Worrying about their future because groups that don't win a music show in their first 3 years usually disband (lol we're in the big old year 2024 now)
Dongho eating cake in the bathroom like a gremlin
Eli's alleged bachelor pad
I actually don't remember if this was in this documentary or from something else, but Hoon saying Kevin was the meanest to him when he first joined because he would tease him over not knowing how to dance
About the actual album now, I think that this, like Bran New Kiss, is another real turning point for them. We get a good mix of dance songs and more emotional songs, we have their first unit songs, and first real self-written song (albeit just lyrical composition with some help, but still baby steps!!)
Intro | YouTube Music 7.1k | Spotify 31k
It's 56 seconds long and basically a NEVERLAND remix
What is there to review?
7.5/10 I don't hate it though
NEVERLAND (Audio) | YouTube Music 26M | Spotify 2.5M
This went triple platinum in my bedroom I was so in love with this song (still am a bit)
One of the few songs where everyone is an active and roughly equal participant
Soohyun, Kevin, and Dongho get a bit more though but that's fine
"Money love fashion fame and all that's in between" what a banger line from Eli for once I'm not laughing at him
"And we stay forever young" Dongho, the most babyfaced baby to ever baby says
"Ggeuteun eobseo never end/Yeogin Neverland" part of the chorus? Batshit so good I love it
Some interesting vocal/rapper combos - Kevin/Kiseop/Eli; Hoon/AJ/Dongho; AJ/Kevin/Kiseop; Hoon/Eli/Kiseop/Dongho
Chorus is basically Kevin/Soohyun + Hoon for the second one
It's not very deep, but I am a sucker for the eternal youth and hedonism themes
Makes a fun dance track just slightly dark, like we're having fun at the club but also a little scared
I also like that while the vocals have clearly been processed for stylistic purposes, you can still really hear the differences in their voices, and the power in Soohyun and Kevin
9.5/10 it's just so iconic
NEVERLAND (MV) | Official upload 23M
Just realized it's been years since I've actually properly watched this MV but good god if it isn't permanently burnt into my brain
I have so many questions about who this mysterious DJ is and his purpose
Is he the reason they're seemingly trapped in this wintry apocalyptic-esque space? Is he why the party never stops? Is he even human?
Iconique this was my laptop's wallpaper for like a good year in middle school (which is a super long time)
These tinsel tops are both questionable and perfect, love the way the fabric and fringes move
This was like peak male fashion in 2011 where copious amounts of guyliner can give untold confidence
Like guyliner so thick it removes the need for eyeshadow
That's deadass gotta be like an entire bottle of liquid liner right there
Also I really like that hair colour on him
Peak male hairstyle in 2011
Like I think this was almost universal where if a guy in middle/high school had this haircut, he was automatically the coolest guy
Or in my experience, every Asian guy had either this hair, a buzzcut, or a bowlcut, those were the only hairstyles from like 2008-2012
Not the statement necklace
OH BABY WE'RE BACK IN THE ABANDONED WAREHOUSE
This is honestly one of my favourite parts
Also someone please let them out of the freezer the floor is cold and hard
FREE HIM
Love the obligatory smoulder and brood shots of the members so angsty for no reason
I like to think that this ice sculpture actually ate up majority of the budget along with the plethora of arts and crafts baubles attached to their outfits and eyeliner
Love love love this bit of choreo
I was so obsessed with this water set as a kid and still am
So obviously there isn't much to talk about the MV since it's basically a bunch of dance videos in different sets spliced with some brooding solo shots and smouldering group shots
But you know what? It works the song has enough going on that if the MV had more it would feel like too much
The sets are standard vaguely apocalyptic wastelands, and I really like the blue snowy one and the orange water one in particular
Three outfits -- the black tanks with the silver mesh/tinsel loose tank over; the black short-sleeve/sleeveless tops with metallic accents, and the white outfits at the end, and they all look good still and in motion
The hairstyles were all fine, with Kevin and Kiseop really embodying Peak 2011 Male Fashion, and Dongho with the most bowlcut to ever bowl
9/10 so iconic so good so 2011
NEVERLAND (Stages) | Highest viewed 765k (Music Core)
I was so obsessed with this when it came out like how could I not? Also incredible that they've brought The Box, which was not one of the sets used for the MV, to the music show absolutely incredible
It's like they gotta hit all the second gen tropes they can
Can't tell if I love or hate this motion sickness-inducing camera work
I can't take this part seriously anymore because I keep thinking about that charades game they played in Japan where they all mocked Kevin for this
The lines his arms make are very nice though, sharp and straight
That hair is ahead of its time
Another personal favourite part of the dance
Love that the smaller group work
This is more on the camera, but those background dancers integrated in seamlessly
Also love that everyone gets a chance to be centre I think that's really cute and everyone gets some time to shine
RIP to this arm pumping movement that disappears in like 2012 and the fact that AJ kept doing this last year
This part is so good
Everyone crowding around Soohyun while he belts, the turns, so good
Kinda like he's sucking up their energy to sustain his singing lol
Firstly, outfits
Love that they're all wearing the same basic black vest and pants, and have their own gold accents for the vests. Super simple but interesting to look at, moves very nicely
Nobody has hair crimes against humanity, just the standard 2011 hairstyles
Singing-wise, oh this was absolutely live and it's kind of insane they did all of this?
Like yeah of course there's the backtrack, but it's obvious when they're singing live versus letting the backtrack take over for the moment
I completely get why they were constantly talking about having to improve their health and fitness for this comeback because wow they sound really clean, both the vocal and rap lines
Also get why they said this was dangerous for their health, I remember trying to learn the dance and it was hard. I can't imagine having to train the dance and sing cleanly like that
On the topic of singing while dancing and the fitness and skill required for it, I think the NEVERLAND choreo is really interesting in that regard
There's a lot of up and down movement, lots of arm and footwork, but the torso stays relatively intact
Not static, but very shoulders-ribs-hips connected, and a lot of the interesting shapes and lines in the dance are mostly illusions created from arm, leg, and head placements
Which makes sense because while I don't sing, I'd imagine that keeping the torso straight and connected would help with maximizing airflow
Overall, they all did great. Everyone got their little moments to shine, though of course Soohyun shone the most, and nobody was super eyecatching, which is really good for this kind of dance
10/10 this is definitely one of those songs where the live stages are just insane to watch (*cough cough* SBS Chuseok water stage *cough cough*
Anyway, lookbook time
These feathered monstrosities with the rhinestoned tops
I swear they brought it up during UKISS On The Block when they were bemoaning second gen fashion
I think I see the vision of drawing attention to the upper body and arm lines, but it just makes their shoulders look perma-hunched
Love the skinny jeans, combat boots, and black jacket look
The individualized jackets with gold embellishments never misses
The dangly bits really help draw attention in a good way without ruining the overall lines
The white ensemble is nice, cuts a clean silhouette
But I don't like that Kevin and Hoon have theirs unbuttoned I get why, but I think if some of the others were also unbuttoned, or if they just had a different cut it would look better
The flopping vest is just a bit weird
So these outfits are from a 2011.12.30 special performance
Love love love it why did they tease a vampire concept like this if they weren't ever going to do it
Also really love reusing these vests with white skinny jeans, it's such a clean look
Shiny silver trashbag vests and blazers with white jeans
Not loving the cut of the blazers though I do think vests are probably the way to go for the dance
I do love these blazers though the slimmer-cut is definitely more flattering
Baby Don't Cry | YouTube Music 661k | Spotify 250k
I genuinely think this could've been a title track of its own it's so good
Another staple of my tween years - it's sad and angsty and moody
I like how the song song builds by letting all these sweet-toned singers do the first half before the second half is basically dominated by Soohyun and AJ + Kevin backing
Those first two verses honestly sound so pretty, and fit very well considering it's just them being sad boys
Second half is being slightly angry and petty, so of course Soohyun fits it perfectly
It's a genre-crossing "baby I love you please come back" to "baby you broke up with me :(" to "I'm gonna fight this other dude and I hope you become miserable >:c"
So so petty "I'm going to wish for your unhappiness"
Also went triple platinum in my bedroom
9.75/10 I would've given it a 9/10 for the first two verses alone they were that good
SOMEDAY (audio) | YouTube Music 1.5M | Spotify 336k
I'm fairly certain this is their first real slow song?
This was and still is such a comfort song
I love that it's a weepy song, not because it's sad in any way, but just because it's literally a comfort song
Another great collaborative effort for the first half before letting Soohyun and Kevin take the second half
Kinda surprised Hoon doesn't have more individual lines
Again, NH was kinda cooking by accident when they put them together like their voices all work so well
It's a shame we don't get to hear Dongho sing more I like his voice
The chorus is single-handedly responsible for getting me through middle school
10+ years later I still get a bit misty-eyed from this sometimes
8.5/10 I think it's a great foray into softer and more emotional songs, not their best especially compared to their JP ones, but a fantastic first go
SOMEDAY (stages) | Highest viewed 130k (Fan upload)
I don't remember them promoting this song that much yet there's so many stages?
I remember this Wave Kpop one but not the others
There's not much to really talk about since it's just singing, but it is crazy to hear Eli sing here versus even just a couple years later like he improved a lot
Super funny when Dongho sings his part and when Kevin's harmonization comes in, you completely lose Dongho's voice lol
These outfits are fine, simple, but gets the job done
Also lol Kevin wearing full smokey eye makeup here
Ooh these outfits are cozy, love the earthy palette
But also peak preppy 2011
Hoon in a full winter jacket is super funny though like everyone else is just dressed for autumn
More cozy fits, but this time in black/white/grey
Lol Dongho's little newsie cap
And Kevin's poncho like can we talk about how in ponchos were in 2011-2012?
They also sound super on in this performance. Probably the best version of the Dongho-Kevin bit I've heard
You can also pick out all the others singing during the chorus, which is pretty rare
Black jackets over white shirts with white pants, hard to go wrong
The blazers over graphic tees was so in at the time
Oh I love this very cohesive look
I don't love the jackets but the aesthetic is so consistent I don't hate it?
Different looks but very similar, very well done
Take Me Away | YouTube Music 1.3M | Spotify 272k
The goddamn faint emergency siren is literally both the worst and best part of this song because it adds ambience, but I hate the possible implications of it
Hoon/Kevin duet?!?!?! The first and last they literally just did this one song together and never again
It's like they knew this couldn't be topped and just had to pack it up
Love that every part of this song is so simple and understated so that their sweet and slightly teary voices can shine love that for them
Lyrics are hella depressing, which is why I actually don't have this on a lot of playlists because I can and will cry
I think the lives of this are way better (unsurprisingly) they really hit you with the full brunt of everything
8.5/10 simple, depressing, and understated for all the right reasons
ON THE Floor | YouTube Music 246k | Spotify 166k
I love that that's literally the official title like why is it capitalized like this
So we're just gonna completely change the mood with a fun dance song now
Soohyun/Kevin duet featuring AJ, Hoon, and Kiseop in roughly equal parts
Kiseop gets a whole verse to himself?!?!
Really is just a party song with a dash of "girl we in love"
8/10 it's a fun song that does its job, it's just not a standout in any way
Love Of A Friend | YouTube Music 434k | Spotify 68k
Back to slow and emotional again
This song doubles as both a friendzone anthem and a situationship anthem like what do you mean "we're not friends, we're not lovers"??
Another song where everyone gets a little part I love it
Opening with Soohyun/Hoon/Kevin? Goated I love the slowly increasing sweetness
Third verse with the entire vocal line stuffed in there? Incredible
I also think that verse is just so sweet lyrically
It's such a sappy love song it almost feels out of place in their KR discography like this would 100% work for a JP release
I think they all sing the chorus? Hard to tell because Soohyun and Kevin are always loud as hell and drown everyone else out, but I can hear Hoon and AJ pretty clearly at times
The bridge confuses me greatly because Soohyun clearly sings the second line, but the first line sounds like it's split between Hoon and Kiseop
I wish there was a live of this so I could confirm it
Why is there no live for this??? A travesty I say an absolute travesty
The last chorus though? Incredible
Soohyun belting his little heart out like rent's due, Kevin fighting for attention, and AJ randomly busting through
10/10 I can't even put into words how much I love this song it's one of their best slow songs
Story of April | YouTube Music 68k | Spotify 43k
Soohyun landing their first collabotration with a female artist good for him
It's a weepy love song, which is basically his forte
I think it's nice, not my favourite, but I do like their voices together
7.75/10 I don't have much else to add, but something about the song makes me feel like it's missing something?
Obsession | YouTube Music 692k | Spotify 192k
2SEOP 2SEOP 2SEOP
The chokehold this had me in was insane
I think this was one of the most listened-to song on my iPod throughout all of middle school and part of high school
I was so not normal about this song and I'm still not how could I be when I was so completely in love with the both of them
And it's so cute they cowrote this
"Love which is effable" AJ that was such a banger
Remember when they performed this for their 2012 tour and when AJ sings "tears are falling down" he just starts tenderly carressing Kiseop's cheek???
I really do like their voices paired together
Also does anyone remember if this came out before AJ's whole obsessive lover bit started or was it after, because either way I'm impressed he stuck to it at least until 2014
Like I'm sorry but that one Q&A game they played where the others were all like "being clingy/having a clingy lover is too bothersome :/" while AJ is just stomping his foot and shouting "love equals obsession!!" is soooo funny to me
Anyway when are we getting our Siyoon/Kiseop-produced UKISS album?? Like the chances of this actually happening now are significantly higher than when this idea was first floated
9/10 literally altered my brain chemistry
TOP THAT | YouTube Music 294k | Spotify 110k
Okay so now we're back to Bad Boy™ UKISS with another arrogant dance track
And the autotune is back babyyy
That persistent 'lalala' synth is both super annoying and infuriatingly catchy
Also lowkey kinda anxiety-inducing
So this is basically Soohyun's song since he's basically singing like half of it himself
AJ and Kevin get the next most lines, with AJ getting a whole rap to himself and Kevin coming and going throughout the entire song
Hoon, Dongho, Eli, and Kiseop are fighting for scraps lol
Honestly I don't remember feeling like AJ ever got so many parts, but this journey is proving me otherwise
Aggressively arrogant song
So I think that this is an angry post-breakup song where they're bitching at their ex?
7.5/10 I don't hate it, but the synth sound is so annoying. Otherwise, very normal uwukiss song
Tell Me Y | YouTube Music 88k | Spotify 81k
Rap line song??? Kinda sorta it's just Dongho and Eli with Swin PD doing the singing
Surprisingly slow and mellow song for what is ostensibly the rap line song
If you guessed this song is another "baby I miss you please come back" song, you'd be right
A very even three-person collaboration everyone got lines yay
I really like the instrumentation for this song, very chill and easy to listen to
8/10 I feel like I always forget about this song when I make playlists it's really nice
Let's Meet Again | YouTube Music 17k | Spotify 9.4k
Group project with Paran to cover a Paran song lol
Thank you Eli for the elephant impression, truly don't know what we'd do without you
So yeah it starts with a long group chat for the first few minutes while the 9 of them are stuffed in that recording booth
By the way, there's a making of album video of this and it's super adorable
The Paran guys are just teasing and babying Soohyun like that's exactly what he deserves
It's a bit difficult to sort through the voices because I'm not familiar with Paran, but it sounds mostly like the vocal line + the Paran guys
I think it's Paran who starts off, followed by Hoon and Kevin, then the vocal troika dominating the first chorus
Second verse sounds like Eli, who sounds very nice, followed by an equally nice Kiseop, then AJ, then the second chorus that's dominated by AJ and Kevin
Then SooHoon helping build into the very pretty last chorus that's mostly the Paran guys + Soohyun
I just kind of wish there was something else to help resolve the ending since it just kinda comes down, but the payoff doesn't feel super satisfying?
It's very pretty I love the instrumentation and how well it builds
You know, I've always wondered where AJ got his singing style from, like it's super distinct compared to the others, and he must have learnt/mimicked it from his Paran bros 🥺
It's such a mushy 'let's meet again' type song I love it
God I'd kill to hear a proper live of this done it'd be so good
8.75/10 god the buildup is so good and I love vocal-heavy songs
So yeah, after a very long time, I'm finally done with NEVERLAND, and we're entering their JP era next, yay!
Not a fun fact, but just a general observation, but this whole 2011-2014 period is so insane to me? Like they basically work nonstop for those 3 years doing constant promotions in Korea and Japan, international tours/concerts, all while members are coming and going? Honestly more surprised they didn't all crash and burn, considering how middling the returns were, but I guess that's why they're all batshit
#ukiss#uwukiss#have i said i love them? i love them a very normal amount#i'd love to do a goated ukiss playlist but neither spotify nor yt music have their whole catalogues :/
Quarterly Debut Review: Q1 2024
Quarterly Debut Reviews are a supplementary series to my biannual Periodic Rookie Group Reports, which are published quarterly. Each installment covers three rookie groups that debuted over the past three months. For the fifth installment, I covered ALL(H)OURS (January), YDS (February), and Heimish (March).
As always, a full list of rookie groups that have debuted thus far in 2024 is available here: 2024 Rookie Groups Debuts
January / ALL(H)OURS Debut: January 10, 2024 Debut Song: “GOTCHA”
Although I have been tracking rookie groups for over a decade, I am no soothsayer. I cannot predict with any accuracy the number of new groups that will debut in 2024 or if more groups will disband this year than last year. Nor can I tell if the recent reversal of a multi-year decline in the number of boy groups I covered in Periodic Rookie Groups Report No. 22 is permanent or a temporary deviation. At best, what the numbers tell me is. 2024 is not off to a bad start, especially regarding boy groups. The four boy groups that debuted this year in January mirrors the previous year's total. While this may not crack 2019’s record of nine boy groups in January, it is better than 2018's where boy groups' poor performance was foreshadowed by a single debut at the start of the year.
No matter how this year shakes out for boy groups, it cannot be said that boy groups did not try like ALL(H)OURS who was one of the four boy groups to debut. Their name externalizes their ambition signaling, according to Korea JoongAng Daily, their intention to “pour everything it has at all times.” Their debut song doubles down on this message with the chorus, punctuated by a deep bass sound, emphasizing their laser focus on their goal.
Of course, it takes more than focus and hard work for idols to achieve their dreams—or stardom —in the industry. Those are only parts of an equation with multiple variables, many of which idols have no control over, including their image, musical director, or whether a group gets to come back and try again or build on the momentum. But at least ALL(H)OURS are committed to doing what they can do and working with what they have control over.
February / YDS (YeoDongSaeng) Debut: February 21, 2024 Debut Song: “A Fluttering Love”
YDS’s debut single “A Fluttering Love” can claim more so-called ‘firsts’ than your average debut single. The song is the group’s first release under a proper label, as well as, their official debut and first single. Contrarily, it is also the first song in the industry's history to qualify as both a debut and a comeback single, a fact that the marketing has not hidden but highlighted. On a teaser image released to promote the song’s release, above the two members seated back-to-back on a white table, it reads “YDS 7TH DIGITAL SINGLE ALBUM.”
This discrepancy in qualification is a byproduct of YDS’ unorthodox career trajectory. The duo began their career uploading covers of k-pop songs to their YouTube channel, before pivoting to producing their original songs in 2022. They released six singles and built up a small following before according to their December 2023 Instagram post, signing with HO Entertainment. Then as established above, in February they released their seventh single that doubled as their major label debut. In other words, unlike most k-pop groups who debut after being assembled through the industry’s traditional top-down method, YDS debuted in reverse.
While there are tradeoffs for both YDS and HO Entertainment for bypassing this usual path, I see the appeal. For HO Entertainment, in particular, it is a cost-saving measure. A group with a pre-determined lineup eliminates the need to recruit and train future members of a group, a process so expensive that according to the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA)’s 2023 Pop Culture & Arts Industry Survey, most agencies do not even maintain a pool of trainees. They also come with a pre-defined image and sound, which although certainly adjustable, HO Entertainment has left unchanged. Indeed “A Fluttering Love”, features their signature sweet acoustic sound and lyrics about a love confession. This is consistent with their previous releases, only this time it comes with a name attached to it and an accompanying promotional rollout, typical of your average group.
March / Heimish Debut: March 15, 2024 Debut Song: “Golden Hour”
So far, this year has gone according to Rainbow E&M’s plan. That plan, laid out across their 2023 year-end Instagram posts, indicated that they aimed to debut one group per month – a feat they have pulled off. Three months into 2024, they debuted at least one group under the Future Idol Asia banner every month: Flora in January, Bluebell in February, and now Heimish and Pearlys in March.
Practically speaking, these are all new groups in the sense that Future Idol Asia has never debuted a group under these names or with these lineups. Of the four groups that debuted, Flora and Heimish’s lineups are partly a patchwork of members from prior Future Idol Asia groups. In the case of Flora, of the group’s six members, four previously debuted under Redplum and Closer, respectively. As for Heimish, their group is comprised of one new member, two members of Blossom, and one member of Winsome. This is a byproduct of the nature of the project. As I have written before Future Idol Asia groups are not intended to be permanent homes for aspiring idols but a temporary waypoint on their journey. Ideally, a member who debuts as part of a Future Idol Asia group would catch the attention of an entertainment agency scout at a showcase who invites them for further auditioning before inviting them to join their agency. In reality, though not every member gets picked. For example, in the case of Closer, two of whose members re-debuted this year as part of Flora, only one of the ten members in the group was chosen for additional auditions with other agencies.
This poses a conundrum for the Future Idol Asia project, as they are left with groups with gaps in their lineup, although groups like Flora and Heimish point to their solution. Since last year they have been repackaging members from their previous groups into these new groups. That allows the project to pad its numbers, giving the illusion that the project has more recruits than it actually does, especially if recruitment does not meet expectations. More importantly, it also gives those not picked the first time another chance. With a new group, concept, song, choreography, and opportunity to perform at the showcase this time might be the charm.
Doom WADs’ Roulette (2004): Grove
After his 2001 WAD, Equinox (link to my review: ==>), we welcome once again an alien in disguise known as B.P.R.D. This time, we will be taking a look at one of the two WAD projects that were connected with him. And we are going straight through the rabbit hole with this one.
G4: Grove
Main author(s): B.P.R.D
Release date: January 26th, 2004 (original release)/February 26th, 2004 (database upload)
Version played: Original version
Required port compatibility: ZDoom (and probably any port that is not Boom)
Levels: 1 (MAP01 replacement)
Like in my Equinox review, I played this map before, primarily due to Dean of Doom spoiler tagging it. And let me tell you something: there was a reason why he did that.
Grove is... unique. It is some of the most intriguing Doom maps I’ve played in the past (at least by 2004 standards). Almost everything in this map feels so bizarre that you feel like there needs to be a sequel just to increase the lore or whatever there is in the map’s world.
Now, let’s dive into this map further to see what secrets it hides.
Don’t we all hate Chaingunners? Not only do they tend to ruin your fun by being the most obnoxious hitscanners in Classic Doom but turns out they can also steal your crops. The latter thing happened to our hero of this map: Being sick of some Hoovy (here called Smugla) stealing his mushrooms, he grabbed a gun and went after the Fatass through the hole he came out. After climbing out of the tunnel Smugla made from another side, he ended up in some inhuman place near the robber’s house, surrounded by forest. Our hero finds a map with an X in its upper-left corner. Thinking that this is where more mushrooms are (after taking what was near the Hoovy’s house) he decides to go there.
This map looks... fooking hell, it’s something incredible. Sure, it’s mostly just a shit ton of forest around you, but the atmosphere of this map and the mystery of its world is what makes it great. Once again, B.P.R.D’s unorthodox thinking and planning are shown in his body of work at his best.
And Grove’s music track makes it even better.
youtube
It’s something really alien in it but also calming at the same time. I know, I’m not saying much but, words can only barely describe what happens on this map.
Your task on this map is rather simple: collect three skulls and put them on three pedestals with hands to exit the map. Typical stuff for a Doom map but getting each skull is where it gets interesting:
Blue skull is inside the tomb, where the ruins are. To access it, you must travel to the hidden stone circle (by the teleporter hidden in the woods where the map shows) and press the skull switch to unlock the tomb.
Red skull is in the cemetery but the entrance to it is barricaded. There is another passage through the cave, however. Don’t forget to press a hidden switch on one of the steps to come out the other side.
Yellow skull is inside the Smugla’s vault. You can open it with one of the switches in Grove Central. And the skull is actually a decaying head of a bisected Arch-vile.
But the way of getting the skulls is not the only interesting thing in Grove. The map that you will find doesn’t show the topography of the level. It’s more like a treasure map, showing you only clues about what is where.
You might also notice some 45 degrees turned squares on a map. These are actually secrets. There are five of these, and by finding all of them you can gain access to the super secret. I won’t tell you what the secret is. I will only say that you can get a Plasma Gun with a shit-ton of ammo to help you.
As I mentioned earlier, Grove mostly takes place in the forest, surrounding you from everywhere. And while it’s not a problem, it becomes one when you have to move between the trees to get to important places and/or secrets. It gets especially annoying when you try to find a small, stone circle, where you will be moving from one end of that part of the forest to another just to accidentally step on it. I can promise you that it might take you a few minutes at best at your blind walkthrough when you finally find it. And I’m not even talking about getting out of the forest.
Also, let me tell you that this map tends to look really dark in some of the sector light modes. You won’t be able to see almost anything. If you have trouble with that, you can set it on Legacy or something else that can give you some brighter lighting.
Now, before I’ll move on, let me tell you something. If you get stuck at the beginning of the map, take a look at one of the bookcases inside the house.
Grove can get challenging sometimes despite having only 57 enemies on HMP. The first good idea is to get the Super Shotgun from the well before getting even close to one of the points with the exclamation mark shown on the map (remember to drain the water near hands first).
The main reason why this map is difficult is due to the severely limited ammo. Unless you know where the secrets are, you will not have ammo to deal with the final army of hell Nobles at the very end of the map, nor with Smugla himself.
Yes, Smugla appears as an enemy. Thankfully, or rather unthankfully, he is nothing more but a reskin of Spider Demon. If you brought Plasma Gun from the Super Secret with you, he will go down easily.
I’ve encountered some bugs while playing Grove. The most noticeable one was with the secret that has a big mushroom. For some reason, the area that covers its surrounding with shadows has a ceiling with a floor texture on it... WHAT?!
I have no explanation for this. Maybe it’s related to the newer versions of ZDoom/GZDoom.
Also, I noticed a small square of void near the generator behind Smugla’s house.
There is more of this stuff written in the text file. I think there was a bigger chance for those to appear in the past than now since I didn’t encounter any of these.
Grove may not be a masterpiece (trees are the main con) but I think it’s still awesome. It’s something that feels like it shouldn’t work and yet everything clicks in the right place. This map is one of the two reasons why B.P.R.D got named the Mapper of the Year in Cacowards 2004. And he made this map in almost two weeks! This is insane!
And also, if you want more, here’s Dean of Doom part where he talks about this map (part starts at 17:12):
youtube
I hope my experience with Grove won’t ruin my time with the next map on the 2004 roster.
See you next time.
Bye!
...
WARNING
SPOILERS OF THE SUPER SECRET BEHIND THE WALL
Huh... I always wondered if an author of Grove is an alien.
this all of my favorite artist's album, her songs is so soothing for me , its recommadable artirst if u like music like me , fun fact;''Lana Del Rey has one of the most enigmatic personalities of modern pop, and it’s won her one of the most devoted audiences of the 2010s. ''amazing right ,she is very famous in both genders, MORE FUN FACTS ABOUT HERRR ,At age 18, Lana began performing in clubs around Brooklyn, NY under various monikers including Lizzy Grant, May Jailer, and Sparkle Jump Rope Queen. Around the same time, she began attending Fordham University in The Bronx, where she majored in philosophy with a specific focus on metaphysics.and
was interested in God and how technology could bring us closer to finding out where we came from and why
Is what she said about her degree when asked. The theme of God and science remains persistent in all of her music. Alongside her college major, some of her song themes were the effect of attending a Christian high school.
She signed her first recording contract with 5 Points Records in 2007 and her first digital album, Lana Del Ray a.k.a. Lizzy Grant, was released in January 2010.
Traces of this era can still be found online but this commercially unsuccessful epoch was ultimately abandoned to make way for the rebrand of Lana Del Rey.
In 2011, a homemade music video for “Video Games” was uploaded to Lana’s YouTube channel. The track became a viral sensation, sparking widespread interest in the artist, and she signed with Interscope/Polydor in the October of that year. On the acknowledgements for her fifth studio album, Lust for Life she wrote
''Abel, I still think of the day u posted video games on your Tumblr. Grateful for u.'' now information about her
Since then, Lana has delivered a flair unlike any other artist of her generation, praised for its cinematic sound and references to various aspects of pop culture, particularly that of the 1950s and 1960s Americana.
After many studio releases that were removed from streaming platforms to make way for her rebrand, Lana explained the meaning of her stage name and how it was influenced by her time in Florida while in college.
I wanted a name I could shape the music towards. I was going to Miami quite a lot at the time, speaking a lot of Spanish with my friends from Cuba – Lana Del Rey reminded us of the glamour of the seaside. It sounded gorgeous coming off the tip of the tongue.
Before using Del Rey, she initially chose the alternate spelling Lana Del Ray and released an album under that name, but ultimately chose the latter moving forward.
On January 27, 2012, Lana’s first major-label project, Born to Die, was released. Despite mixed reviews from critics, it is the second-longest charting album on the Billboard 200 by a female artist, and gave Lana her best-known smash hit “Summertime Sadness”.
Later that year, the Grammy-nominated EP Paradise was released, and was packaged alongside the reissue of Born to Die.
Two years later, the atmospheric album Ultraviolence was released, showcasing a slightly darker sound and theme. The term comes from the Anthony Burgess novel, A Clockwork Orange, and refers to excessive or unjustified violence.
2015 saw the arrival of Honeymoon which Lana described as being “a tribute to Los Angeles”. The album became the subject of much critical acclaim, garnering the most praise of all of her projects before it, with some even calling it her best work yet.
Her fifth studio album Lust For Life followed in 2017, packing some high-profile features with artists including The Weeknd, A$AP Rocky, Playboi Carti and Stevie Nicks. Billboard called it a “new-age folk” record and it was named in the Top 50 Best Album of the Year lists by several high-profile music publications.
After much anticipation, teasing and at least one deferred release date, on August 30, 2019, Norman Fucking Rockwell! was debuted to the world. This album earned her Grammy nominations and places on year-end lists, launching her further than ever into the limelight.
Only days after NFR!’s release, in an interview with The Times, Lana confirmed that a new project entitled Chemtrails Over the Country Club (originally called as White Hot Forever) was in the works with a potential release in 2020. Nearing the end of 2019, Lana also announced she would be releasing a spoken word poetry album on January 4th, 2020, as the book itself was taking long to hand-bind.
Similar to the way Chemtrails Over The Country Club was announced, Lana took to Instagram after the release of Chemtrails to announce a follow-up eighth studio album called Blue Banisters (which was originally supposed to be called ‘Rock Candy Sweet’) that was expected to be released on July 4th, 2021, however was delayed for October 22nd of the same year. Three singles from Blue Banisters were released on May 20th, 2021.there is more but lets move on there now im going to tell my recommedation for her songs , in top 10 is born to die , i love this song , it is really famous in most countries , like western , and other more in top 9 is venice b1tch[this is is i cannot say]this song melody is so good , her songs it rymthys so good , this song is about love song and the american-made in top 8 is brooklyn baby this one is also amazing ,it is about her boyfriend, its love song again,which means se saying ''Del Rey declares, “You’re the man of my dreams, ‘cause you know how to leave.” top 7 is ''high in beach'' it is a moody and melancholic after being alone in 2015 top 6 is ''ride'' which the song is about ''No one loves a small-town Americana escape-meets-Lolita story more than Lana Del Rey, and “Ride” delivers a swelling ballad that recalls the quiet brilliance of “Video Games.” in top 5 is '' of to the races'' ''Lana Del Rey’s love of literature is underrated — but hyper-obvious — throughout her discography, but it’s on full display on this singsong-y track, which casts Del Rey as a life-hardened Lolita and her “old man” as a less gentile Humbert'' in top 4 is ''norman f0cking rockwell'' it means uhm i cant really say it but uh ill just put it ''Lana Del Rey opens her 2019 album of the same name with the stinging lyrics “Goddamn, man-child/You fucked me so good that I almost said ‘I love you,'” in top 3 is ''west coast '' it means ''Ambition and romance are warring forces on “West Coast,” one of Del Rey’s most psychedelic, unconventionally structured songs. In the “A” section of the rock ballad, the surf guitar is driving and tense, '' in top 2 is the greatest'' the meaning is “The Greatest” is the climax of Norman Fucking Rockwell!, a brilliant bicoastal reflection of pop culture in the same vein as Bob Dylan’s “Murder Most Foul,” Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” in top one is ''video games'' made in 2011 its about
''The song that started it all: Lana Del Rey’s debut single under her new name created a whole aesthetic movement, changed the goal posts for pop music, and most importantly,'' that is all thank you[the image it isnt mine]
Skate-Leading Stars, The Bane of my Fucking Existence
I've partially wanted to talk about this anime for a while, but after Confirmation that it's real and I haven't been fucking hallucinating it, I think now is likely a better time than ever to uh, Discuss this weird ass show. Skate-Leading Stars was first revealed to me while working on a separate whole project (My attempt to watch every anime where Hiroshi Kamiya voices a main character) and saw it as the main currently airing show that he was voicing a character in. Unfortunately for me, the thought that formed was "oh sweet, this is a currently airing one I could watch this as it airs," not realizing the two fucking year long brainworm I was about to nourish. As a precursor, I need to make clear I'm going to be jumping around in focus a lot. moreover, this is NOT a review, i just want to vent about something that's been taking over my mind. there is a LOT of weird shit going on with this anime that I'd like to at least cover so if I leave something hanging for a bit, I will get back to it at some point.
Spoilers for Skate-Leading Stars, Your Lie In April
What the fuck is Skate-Leading?
Have you ever watched like, a sport, a game, or some other activity (Including Single player ones!) and just wanted to add people to it for no fucking reason? like, "What if chess was 5 people on each side per board deliberating every action while really hoping nobody else listens in" tier shit. That's the main premise of Skate-Leading. It's a sport where 5 anime boys do figure skating all at once in a formation together. The obvious concerns about safety are not even mentioned and the idea of "how do you even judge this on a regional level well without a LOT of judges" is settled by having the numbers be put up as a box that they say is an AI judging it. a core plot point is the One Interesting Character figuring out how the AI works in his gamer cave and gaming it.
Your first bit of confusion you may encounter with that premise is of course "isn't there already pair skating as an actual real sport one could use for the drama of multi-person skating?" or maybe "doesnt this mean this just a more fucked up yuri on ice?" which to me are both great questions, with only the first easily answered with a Yes. Yuri on ice is the obvious comparison for what SLS is attempting to draw from here, given you have seen literally anything about yuri on ice and the timing of the two shows, but you need to understand that the figure skating is a bait. the yaoi is the point but is bait in regards for understanding this plot. they're not trying to do Yuri on ice. They're trying to do Your Lie In April.
Let's Talk about the OP (Updated info in final paragraph)
For some fucking reason that I originally credited to COVID delays, half the fucking OP is black screens.
I don't think anything of it is especially standout aside from that, while SLS has many weaknesses the OP isnt one of them. Unfortunately it's not anything to write home about either, so I don't want anyone else to feel like we're truly missing out when I reveal the fact that as far as I can tell the OP was censored for the western release. I'm operating on my own anecdotal evidence and what is one of my two current white whales (the other that isn't about to be mentioned is the Japanese dub of Batman Vs Superman) so if my theorizing here is completely incorrect than that's Fine. Thats Fine. About a month into watching the show while it was airing, the half black OP started to get to me. I wanted to see more, try and get to the bottom of it, and eventually managed to find the full uncensored version uploaded which remained up for about two weeks before disappearing. I know that the version we can find online is fucking censored. I have no idea why. once again, so little people I know have any knowledge about this show aside from me, let alone have talked about it. I cannot find anything online talking about the OP aside from light mentions in the comments of the Crunchyroll upload sandwiched between Jesus Bots.
While spending a pathetic amount of time delaying this, I actually in fact have been sent proof of the uncensored OP existing. from anything I could tell or from what the friend who sent this from me could tell, the entire reason is something involving covid delays (Confirming my original suspicion, at least!) making them rush out the international version before the broadcast version, thought the delay wasn't that huge? its still definitely a mystery to me that haunts me a little but at least I know it Exists.
Since I've spent enough time talking about not the plot I think its a good time to address the whole Your Lie In April thing
What the Fuck do you Mean Its Trying to do Your lie In April??
Your lie in April, if you haven't seen it, is a story about dealing with grief, parental abuse and falling in love again with your passions even after loss. it's a very rough anime to sit through emotionally, and while its very much a show i have mixed feelings about personally, it's still a very well written example of its genre. Skate-Leading Stars spends has the main character parallel Kousei Arima's (The Main character of Your Lie in April) very basic arc of a teenager getting back into the area he used to be a prodigy in as a child, any forms of subtly or trauma have been entirely replaced with as many meatheaded brash qualities as they can in order to fit the true BL purpose of the story. Instead of having the love interest heavily foreshadowed to die being someone who views said passion in an entirely different light than him as a way to work through trauma and difficulty handling the act of playing piano again, the love interest is a mysterious boy who's using him to try and get back at his brother. Skate-Leading Stars, unabashedly, apes the format and ideas of Your Lie in April, barely understanding anything else going on, and uses it for a bl anime about a sport that is at best impossible to judge and realistically physically dangerous to exist.
Ok now what?
I don't think its necessary to do a plot summary of SLS, partially because I don't want to, but mostly because who fucking cares. I love bad shows, and while the start of the show is undeniably strong in its garbage it goes nowhere with anything. It spends a large amount of its time as a story setting up beats that never pay off, having loud yaoi boys yelling constantly, or underusing Hiroshi Kamiya. There IS a manga I could read for the rest of the story that's likely been playing out, but since only the first chapter is translated I don't see any reason to examine it too closely. If you want to watch gay ice skating anime, Yuri on ice is talked about for a reason. if you want to watch bad anime with Hiroshi Kamiya Ultimate Otaku Teacher exists. If you have read the manga please tell me if Sasugai actually has some sort of fatal disease or they're just aping the framing from Your Lie in April without meaning again.
