I think the only thing about Edwin's first interaction with the Cat King that really breaks my heart is how he reacts to TCK's innuendo.

Despite TCK interpreting the reaction as offense/disapproval, what I see is fear.

Edwin doesn't react with disgust or even anger.

He starts backing away. His face drops. He looks scared.

((And then I went and had a full sad revelation in the notes but it's staying there.))

do u mean like, Self Worth wise or actual physical fluctuation wise? if the latter I do like drawing him at firm strongman peak since he's a farmhand but sometimes he isn't actively maintaining muscle so he's saggier (<- most of recent art of him) ....

as for the former I've never wanted to stray in that direction for fat characters, and any issues he has wrt self image (slim as he know's he's endearing and handsome) are more about how his overall size (big and tall) might be perceived as dangerous or a threat due to some formative and isolating events in his childhood, and less about it being focused on weight specifically ykwim. because otherwise he has no issues there ^_^

Thinking about Lan Sizhui teaching Jin Ling how to play guqin.

Thinking about Jin Ling absolutely bored to tears by the fundamentals until he hears how beautifully Lan Sizhui plays and suddenly takes an interest (in the guqin, definitely the guqin, he’s interested in the guqin only, okay??)

Thinking about Jin Ling practicing outside of classes because he wants to impress Lan Sizhui by how much he’s improved and wants to make him proud and wants to see his face light up with a smile—I mean, what? No no no, he just wants to show initiative to learn, that’s all there is to it, nothing more. Nothing at all.

Thinking about Lan Sizhui finding Jin Ling asleep on his guqin after a night of wearing himself out with extra practice and gently waking him up to safely escort him back to his room so he doesn’t get caught by their seniors. Meanwhile, Jin Ling sleepily leans against him on the walk back to his room because it’s normal, he’s just tired, it’s obviously normal because Lan Sizhui slips his hand into his and smiles and Jin Ling’s heart feels like it’s on fire. Oh no.

Thinking about Jin Ling opening up to Lan Sizhui about his nightmares from all the trauma he’s endured and Lan Sizhui staying to play guqin for him until he falls asleep, each note chasing away every bad dream that tries to disturb him.

Thinking about them practicing guqin alone together the next day. And the day after. And the day after that—and they really are practicing but it’s a little hard to focus when Lan Sizhui keeps putting his hands over Jin Ling’s to move them to the correct strings, and Jin Ling’s face is a breath away from Lan Sizhui’s every time he leans over to help him.

It’s just guqin practice, that’s all there is to it, perfectly normal. 🩵💛

#okay but reading this Belloc essay on Austen really made something click in my mind #and it’s because of something he said #which is that women care more about what men think of them generally #(as a general rule. not all the time. etc.)#and men care more about the opinion of the one woman they care about #like women do care (as a first instinct at least) what every man she meets thinks of her #but men are mostly indifferent. until they’re NOT.#which makes women more vulnerable to a greater number of people #but men are MORE painfully vulnerable to the woman whose opinion they care about #and I don’t actually know that that vulnerability only extends to a woman they are attracted to/feel romantic feelings for #I think if they just think well of you as a person you (a woman) have a lot of power over them #which is sooooo interesting and makes so much sense!!!! and is something I’ve sort of been dancing around with teaching #like. a lot of the boys I teach come to care about what I think about them #which doesn’t mean they all have a crush on me. though that step can be super easy and super small #hence the need for the boundaries of steel etc. but it does mean that they care what I think about them!#and I’ve always felt that instinctively and felt that I had to be so gentle with them because the power to crush them is mine if I so choose #don’t let me overstate it. it doesn’t happen all the time or anything close to it. but the thing about me being a teacher is that #they are forced to know me not just in a surface-level way. simply because I spend so much time with them #and talk to them a lot!#ANYWAY. enough about me but yeah this hit me so hard and of course exceptions exist #and/or endless variations on this exist because people are unique and surprising and also everything is changing all the time #etc. etc. but there is something to this I think! and you know what #it’s so interesting because that base-level instinct for women (allowing it to be a thing I mean) can be grown out of #I have trained myself out of/maturity has helped me leave behind that immediate female instinct #of being hurt at the idea that this random waiter (for example) is indifferent towards me. I’ve come to accept it #the instinct is still there!!! because imo women are always scanning and searching and sizing up. and also we are so open to being won over #if that makes sense? which is why insta comments complaining about how only good looking men get away with things like. PLEASE.#there are so many medium-ugly men who get married. it’s the average because the average woman is prettier than the average man #(this is not an insult) women CAN be and usually are so open to being surprised. won over. moved by the simple fact that a guy likes them #and men are not like that. but my point is: men don’t grow out of caring if they care. when they care they care sooooooo much. anyways yeah

at the end of my fucking rope with "conversations" about k12 chronic absenteeism.

#sorry. work rant #next time you read a headline about it think to yourself. why is it schools' job to get kids to come to school.#why do schools have to bend over backward to cater to kids #kids not wanting to go to school is an extremely common occurrence #the difference now is that the responsibility is being shifted off kids and parents and onto schools #i get that schools can do better i really do #i think there is a shared responsibility #but there is a profound belief across society that school is not important and does not matter #and that needs to be addressed too #i'd say 99% of the examples i hear of systemic school problems are actually just examples of individual bad actors #again. schools have issued that need to be addressed! the public school system has profound inequities!#but when the only problems you point out are 'a kid was mean to my kid' or 'a teacher wasn't as nice as they could be'#you're not interested in changing the system #you're interested in changing your kid's experience #and guess what. demonizing school staff sure isn't going to fix anything #at this point I don't see myself ever going back to teaching #you know who will go into teaching? people who don't give a shit.#and that's not going to help anything either.#you can't attract people who care when people who care are punished and chased out #imagine if instead of constantly bringing up the worst possible examples and insisting they are representative of everyone #the good examples were celebrated and rewarded #same thing happens with the medical profession btw #and again. lots of legitimate examples of harm #(i'm fat ffs i know this)#and also I think it's dangerous to have people delegitimizing medicine to the point that crystals are seen as just as valid as a doctor #sorry. separate rant.#but still. delegitimizing professions that require knowledge skill and training is how we get thousands of unqualified people #homeschooling their kids and treating them with herbs they got from their local Etsy witch
