i've just found out your tumblr has even MORe picket fence writing and im over the moon?? But also my heart was shattered with the back in time wip šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜ how does sonic find the strength to leave baby tails behind, how does he react when he sees tails again in his own timeline after having met sick abandoned baby tails??
Heheheh, yeah, there are some little fics or scenes I've written that I hesitate to put on AO3 sometimes (or just aren't complete enough to be a story on their own), so I like to throw them at Tumblr from time to time. Glad you found them! :D
Ohh, the back in time WIP... Not sure how much I can give away because of the chance that it's going to end up part of a bigger fic... but it'll still be a long while until I get around to posting that xD Maybe people will forget lol.
Potential future spoilers under the cut?
So! The way I see it playing out is that Sonic is going to find it in him to leave baby Tails behind because he knows they'll cross paths one day, the way they're supposed to and everything will play out from there. He knows he can't stay in the past and he can't take baby Tails to his present. Plus, Silver's with him and it probably wouldn't go over well to try and explain why it'd be a good idea to take baby Tails with him when it would negate pretty much everything Sonic and Tails experienced together since meeting on West Side Island or cause a split in the timeline where now there's a universe where Sonic never got to meet Tails because he wasn't there and now Sonic's time with have two Tailses. He knows that it can't happen.
But... Sonic still can't stop wondering about the little guy. Is he cold? Is he scared? Is he getting enough to eat? Is he lonely? Hurt? All the things he's not letting himself think about when it comes to his Tails (the 10 year old who's on his first solo adventure and basically gone as close to no contact as possible in order to "prove himself"). He projects all that onto the baby version of him because he knows Tails can handle himself (and that's not why he's worried about him, what he's uncomfortable with is the motive behind the journey). So he gets his hands on two Chaos Emeralds and goes back to check on baby Tails by himself. Just this once.
Except it doesn't end up being just once. Because there is this disconnect and distance between Sonic and Tails of the present, doubts that have arisen in the wake of Forces, Frontiers, and now Tails's absence, Sonic's drawn more and more to the past. Baby Tails smiles and laughs and he doesn't pull away from him and he likes to play and explore and he still needs him. It's just so easy for Sonic to make him feel better. Just by being there.
Also, because this is after Frontiers, going through cyberspace and the cyber corruption has opened the gates to Sonic's memories a bit and they're kind of leaking into his thoughts more and more. He's falling into the habit of ruminating, reliving moments and questioning choices he made, things he might've done wrong, could've done better. So that maybe Tails wouldn't feel like he needs to become a completely different person.
Present Tails won't listen to him, but baby Tails hangs onto every word. So maybe by being there... Tails might remember being loved and maybe the 10 year old won't only see the worst parts of himself when he looks in the mirror if Sonic can try again and show the younger version that he's worth something just as he is.
I think Sonic crosses paths with present Tails twice during all of this. The first conversation goes okay, but there's an awkwardness to it. But Sonic does try to make an effort to be more open with Tails in the hopes that maybe it will set a better example. And Tails is surprisingly receptive to it. So Sonic resolves to not go back to the past, because Tails seems to be doing okay after all. And he's reminded that he loves who his little brother is now. The good and the bad made him who he is, and would he really want to change that? Of course not!
Unfortunately, the second conversation doesn't go nearly as well...
So Sonic goes back to see baby Tails in the wake of it - not because he needs it, but because Tails clearly does - but when he arrives, the forest is burning and he can't find Tails anywhere...

Wheel of the Year 2024, Partial Redux
Tumblr media
Since my last Wheel of the Year reading, there have been some big changes in my life.
Some more or less noticable to a reading, of course, but one major one was so obvious I even saw it in the way my Wheel of the Year was laid out: A big potential cross country move, to a place with little support, for an uncertain job future, in a field I've only been hired in once before. The cards showed it clear as day: In July, there would be a massive change, a whole chapter of my life drawing the curtain. And after that... well, there were two deaths and a tower. It wasn't great.
But since that reading, I've had huge news that moved my relocation to next year - and with it, that whole certainty for July slips away. So I thought it would only be best, seeing as my yearly course has so dramatically shifted, to do a re-read for July through December and see what my NEW end of the year might bring.
Where We Are Now - King of Cups, Reversed A failure to create a loving or supportive environment. This card means that, where I am, I'm not in a place of emotional vulnerability or safeness. I'm not letting anyone in, leaving my cup upturned - empty - and refusing to be receptive to others or let them give to me.
July - The Six of Inking Balls This card represents drowning in your work for better or worse. Being lost in your job. I can already feel this incoming, with my job getting more and more frantic as production ramps up. It's a warning not to get too caught up in it and remember to pop to the surface, every now and then, for air and human connection. And to remember to eat.
August - Queen of Swords, Reversed This card heralds a sort of targetless rampage, a hack and slash approach to life where you kill all before you and take no prisoners for your goal. You will hurt and cut anyone in your way - you are demanding, brutal, and harmful, because you feel like you must be. Be careful where your blade may fall.
September - Page of Pentacles, Reversed A haziness, having no clearly set goals for yourself after your rampage left you aimless and empty. You don't really know what you want to do, drifting, and you're moving from thing to thing without setting roots down. Try to center yourself and judge why you're doing this, and if it may be better to stop in one place for a while.
October - 7 of Cups Suddenly, new! New projects, ideas, and choices, all popping up at once - abundant choice and boundless imagination. This is a card of opportunity, possibility of change, and new horizons. Make sure you pick wisely from the bounty in front of you, and enjoy it while you can.
November - Two of Whips, Reversed This card is about seizing your personal power, despite maybe feeling like you have low station or very little power to make change. Take a moment to assess the structures around you and see how you can make change without hurting those around you.
December - Dancing Death This is a happy death card! It's dancing on the grave of the old in order to joyfully celebrate the new coming on the horizon. It's a reminder to be light and joyful in the face of imminent change, and the temporary nature of life. A good way to close out a year and welcome in a period of massive change for me and my impending move, indeed.
Where We End Up - Seven of Pentacles Things coming to completion, and hard work paying off. Enjoy and appreciate what all your hard work has made for you, and now you can look ahead to plant a new crop - you know it will be bountiful if you treat it right, like you did the last. A bountiful harvest of a life well lived!
This reading definitely lines up much more closely with how I feel the next six months will be without the massive, upending move changing everything and turning things on its head. Hopefully I'll be able to take advantage of the good this reading entails, learn from the bad, and be ready with a full six months coming to joyful fruition to see the next phase of my journey off well.

i've seen some people saying stuff like "oh, maybe dehya will get better in the future. everybody was saying that kokomi and kuki shinobu were bad but look at them now"
and yes. i hope that dehya gets at least some kind of buff
but i'm doubtful that there are many ways they could improve dehya without buffing her directly - at least not like kokomi or kuki
"why is that?" you ask. it's simple. let us look at what kuki and kokomi have that dehya doesn't:
on release, there was a fair amount of negative reception towards kokomi, particularly on the fact that she has -100 crit rate. in fact, some of her current best teams have only been introduced with new characters, such as shenhe for freeze variants, and dendro (nilou, in particular) for dendro teams
it's true that dendro has been a buff for a number of previously underwhelming characters, but the reason why kokomi has worked well in those newer teams is because hydro is such a useful element in so many reactions (like freeze and bloom) while also providing a copious amount of healing (and potentially extra damage via clam set), allowing the team to survive the self-damage from bloom and burgeon (and, more importantly, can out-heal most incoming damage)
dehya, on the other hand, while also having an elemental skill with some uptime issues, does not provide nearly as much utility to the entire team as kokomi does - rather than healing the active character, she just takes some of that damage in their place, and has very little elemental application - where kokomi can be useful by providing extra hydro and healing for maintaining elemental reactions, all dehya does is make you take slightly less damage, and likely mess up more reactions than she helps with (pyro as a supportive element only really benefits vaporize and melt, which both require a significant rate of application, and benefit from team-wide EM and ATK buffs that characters other than dehya can provide - as a damage-dealing element, pyro in burgeon favours a high rate of application like thoma's burst, due to the icd on enemies taking transformative reaction dmg, or a number of strong attacks that can be amplified with vaporize or melt, as is the case with yoimiya, hu tao, or diluc - unfortunately, dehya just does not have good enough damage multipliers, and her icd and incompatibility with hydro applicators like yelan and xingqiu really limits her damage-dealing potential)
and it's a similar story with kuki shinobu - before dendro, there was very little use for a frequent electro application with low base dmg, as there was only really electro-charged and overloaded (and superconduct) where such a thing was beneficial (and it certainly wasn't an efficient use of a team slot). now, with catalyze, and especially hyperbloom, kuki can provide a whole lot of off-field damage, healing, and/or elemental application to allow an number of teams to comfortably clear difficult challenges
and that's the thing: both of these characters are also healers. they spec most of their utility into keeping the active character alive, while also providing a meaningful amount of elemental application for useful reactions.
dehya, on the other hand, only offers a token amount of defensive utility through her damage sharing and super-armour, while the rest of her kit is delegated into Doing Damage By Herself, rather than allowing for any good team-wide buffs (other than maybe tenacity of the millelith's 20% atk)
for there to be such a major comeback for dehya as there was for kokomi and kuki shinobu, there would probably also need to be a new reaction or untapped potential where there was none before
such a thing seems unlikely, however, because there won't be an 8th element being added, nor is there much chance for a new pyro reaction or changes to the way existing ones function. and there is not many ways that dehya's damage can be buffed without also buffing stronger characters like hu tao, xiangling, yelan, or xiao even more
let's hope they figure something out. or they just buff dehya. because i think a bit of actual game balance in this game might be nice for a change

But what if Nelaros had survived.
If Tabris is recruited into the Grey Wardens, he comes with!
Now he just has to survive the Joining (if he becomes a Grey Warden, but Duncan probably would have to recruit him too if the guards learn that he was involved in Vaughan's death)
And Ostagar
And every single freaking quest including the Deep Roads themselves
Nelaros with the trap-maker skill and his blacksmithing knowledge, fixing armor and weapons, maybe helping the rogues and finding new ways to apply poison to weapons which are quicker, waste less poison and are safer for the wielder
Nelaros seeing more of the world than he ever has, and it's so big and beautiful and dangerous.
His honest heart and friendly nature gain him friends among the companions. Alistair helps him hone his skills with the blade; him and Zevran discuss the differences and nuances of Fereldan and Antivan courtships in depth; he is fascinated by Morrigan's magic; he asks Leliana about Orlais, Wynne about life in the Circle, Sten about the Qun (he's had a taste of the wider world and wants more); he adapts weapons for Shale and steals Oghren's drink from time to time
Romance with the companions would be a.... topic to discuss
Tabris and him are technically married. Or engaged (the wedding was interrupted, they never said any vows). What do they do? What do they want? They fought through Denerim and through Ostagar together; where does that put them in relation to each other?
Either way, imagine: the fiercest battle couple/comrade in arms you've ever seen
They made their way through an arl's palace with stolen weapons and armor, two untrained elves who probably had a little too few meals in their lifetime, and they made it out alive
Literally nothing is gonna stop them
Making quick work on the slavers that dared to threaten their people. They rescued Shianni, they do the same for Cyrion
Standing side by side before the Landsmeet, before the nobles who stood by as the alienage was purged, the Blight swept through and slavers ran rampant, and knowing that they killed one of them at the start of their adventure and could proceed through the whole Landsmeet if necessary
Oh, and by the by, the Dark Ritual has potential new warden to complete it (:
Amd finally, the Archdemon. One sacrifices themselves; or they both survive yet again. Either way, there's gonna be tears.
After the battle of Denerim, provided he has survived, he tells Cyrion, Soris and Shianni everything about his adventures. He helps either Alistair or Tabris or both sort through the aftermath of the battle, deal with the ceremonies and get the best deal out of the new ruler's gratitude. He might not call the Denerim alienage home, but it's an alienage and he's an elf and he'll be damned if things don't get better after all of this.
Even so, he stays with the Grey Wardens. After travelling the length and width of Ferelden, the walls that encase the alienage seem terribly confining in comparison. There are more darkspawn to kill, the Grey Wardens need more recruits and capable leadership... and maybe Tabris is still around and they'll be able to share this chapter of their lives as well.
--
Or Tabris could tell the Denerim guards he wasn't involved and tell Nelaros to sit his pretty self down and to look after her family for her
And Nelaros does
He endures the hostility their neighbours direct at him and Sodis for antagonizing the humans
He defends the Alienage and the same neighbours that threw stones at him when the humans come with torches and swords (they are here because of him after all, says a voice in the back of his mind). He runs into a burning building to drag somebody out (he knows his way around fire thanks to his work at the forge). He gets one or two kids out of the orphanage and is devastated that he couldn't save more of them.
He watches Soris and Valora grow fond of each other and thinks back to the girl he went searching for and who fought by his side through a heavily guarded palace
News of the defeat at Ostagar get to Denerim and they hold a funeral for her
He supports Cyrion as best he can, looks for work, brings home money and food and medicine when they need it. He's doing it for her (and, slowly, he becomes part of the family)
He still thinks about Highever and his family there. He writes a lot of letter
Then the Blight comes. There have been plagues in the alienage before and Valendrian takes the necessary precautions. Nelaros might be able to contribute some information of interest; after all, life in the Highever alienage is rougher than in Denerim and they surely have seen plagues aplenty
When the slavers take Valendrian, everything descends into chaos. Nelaros tries to help. Valora is the next to be taken, then Cyrion. He finally goes to the Tevinter mages to see what is going on and promptly gets caged as well
He's lucky; he waited long enough before snooping around to still be there when the fabled Hero of Ferelden shows up
It turns out to be Tabris
The surprise is immense; the reunion is probably awkward (even if she's not in a romance with a companion, she's definitely not the same person he met a year ago). But all that has to be resolved quickly or be put aside because of the Blight
He helps fill her in on what happened during her absence; maybe she asks him to accompany her to the Landsmeet to accuse Loghain
Never before in Ferelden's history have two elves stirred up a Landsmeet like these two
Afterwards, Nelaros decides to be bold and asks for an audience with the new ruler. He explains the situation in the alienage and beseeches them to help change it. It might not amount to much, it might not even yield any results, but he had to try (his determination impresses the ruler. They will remember this elf)
He helps Shianni defend the alienage during the battle of Denerim. If he doesn't fall, he helps rebuild, put out fire, tend to the injured (he also tries to establish conversation with the Dailish elves that have helped defend the city. While not all of them are very receptive, their keeper is more than happy to join forces with the city elves to prevent more people from dying in the aftermath of the battle)
In the end, however, the Denerim alienage is no longer what it once was. A lot of people are leaving. The question presents itself: should he stay and help rebuild, go back to Highever or join Tabris (if she hasn't died) on her future journey? The question has no easy answer: he has come to love the Tabris family; the new ruler contacted him again about the business with the slavers and better living conditions for Denerim's elves; the kids he saved from the massacre at the orphanage look to him for a father figure. In the end, he stays. He's needed here, he has the chance to make a difference, he's happy; and, if Tabris is willing, he can wait for her a little longer

SNK 139.5: Towards the Final Pages with no Final Answers
The final pages of the updated ending are bold, but I think ultimately more evocative than the original preliminary ending.
Even after the intensely polarized reader reception that took issue with the lack of storytelling precision and clarity when it was most needed, SNK chose to end with a decisively ambiguous symbol. In literature, a symbol is something that clearly means something -- but with the most "literary" symbols, their meaning cannot be absolutely defined; any attempted answer as to what a symbol represents has no finality or certainty, and interpretation will remain ever open to debate. A symbol both invites and resists interpretation.
Naturally, the immediate response to the symbolic tree on the final page is to try answering the invitation to the question, "What does it mean?"
Tumblr media
One prominent answer I've seen is that it symbolizes the continuation of the cycle of war and violence either because a) of the symbolic parallel to Ymir or b) on a more literal level, that it implies the actual potential revival of new era of Titans. A reasonable interpretation either way, but also, I think, an incomplete one.
The first reason for this is that "the endless cycle of war" was already clearly and powerful represented in the preceding panels:
Tumblr media
The cycle of war was already continuing in the decades or centuries before the child arrived at the tree. A culminating image symbolizing the persistence or resurgence of an era of war as the final panel would thus arguably be redundant and unnecessary.
Furthermore, the chapter is entitled "Toward the Tree on That Hill." If the tree were simply a symbol of war, by implication the chapter could equally be called 'toward the endless cycle of war'. But such a relentlessly bleak and tonally flat ending sentiment would be firmly incongruous with the story's recurrent conviction in the equal cruelty and beauty of the world -- a conviction that I believe it has been faithful to all the way to its end.
The Long Defeat
But while on this topic of war, let's linger a moment on the "cruelty" side and the consequence of this wordless construction and subsequent destruction of a city -- the most bold and possibly controversial additional panels that are also my personal favourite additions.
One objection that has emerged against this brief sequence of Paradis' apparent destruction is that it renders the entire story to be "pointless". Eren's 80% Rumbling, Armin's diplomatic peace talks between the remnants of the Allied Nations and Paradis, and before that, the proposal of the 50-year plan and Zeke's euthanasia plan... everything, to the very beginning to the Survey Corps' dreams of some kind of freedom; was it all for nothing? All that striving, that hope, that final promise bestowed upon Armin: was it all a pointless story? Even more radically, is the story suggesting that Eren might as well have continued the Rumbling to 100% of the earth? Was Zeke's euthanasia plan the cruel but correct choice all along? What was the point of rejecting the 50-year plan if that had a greater chance of success at preventing this outcome?
Tumblr media
I think Isayama suddenly pulling back to such a long-term view of history to the scale of decades or even centuries into the future calls for a reorientation in attitude towards exactly what kind of story we have been reading. Yes, if the metric is Paradis' survival, maybe it was indeed all "pointless". But that's also to say that, on the broadest scale, SNK is a story about futility, that it is a deliberate representation of the struggle to make one's actions historically meaningful.
In the long view of history, all the events, from Grisha running beyond the wall to see the airships and the first breaking of Wall Maria to Erwin's sacrifices, Paradis' discovery of the outside world, and finally to the Battle of Heaven and Earth, it would all merely be a handful of chapters in the history textbooks of the future. A future in which war and geopolitical conflict will continue even without Titans. That does not mean that all paths to the future are equal -- the 50-year plan would not have put an end to Titans, and Zeke's euthanasia plan distorts utilitarian ethics into just another form of oppression; there are better and worse decisions that lead to more and less degrees of suffering, but no decision can ever be the final one.
The additional panels remind us that in history, there never exists a singular "Final Solution". The reason there are readers who vehemently support Eren to have flattened 100% of the world, and the reason the Paradisians supported the oppressive, authoritarian, proto-fascist Jaegar Faction under Floch and even after the Rumbling, is that because they want to believe that a Final Solution to end conflict exists and will work. They resist the fundamental uncertainty and complexity of the situation, instead preferring a singular, unified, and coherent Answer to Paradis' struggle to survive. I'm reminded of the scholar Erich Auerbach's theorization of why fascism appealed to many people during periods of political and social crisis, change, and uncertainty. Writing in exile after fleeing Nazi Germany, he observed that:
"The temptation to entrust oneself to a sect which solved all problems with a single formula, whose power of suggestion imposed solidarity, and which ostracized everything which would not fit in and submit - this temptation was so great that, with many people, fascism hardly had to employ force when the time came for it to spread through the countries of old European culture." (from Mimesis p. 550)
This acutely describes the Jaegar Faction's rise to power and continued dominance in Paradis. But their promise of unity, of a single formula to wipe out the rest of the world either literally through the Rumbling, or to dominate them with military force, is a false one. Even if Eren had Rumbled 100% of the world instead of 80%, history would still go on. The external threat of the world may have been eliminated, but internal conflict and violence would still continue onward throughout the generations born on top of the blood of the rest of the world. Needless to say, out of all the options, Eren's 80% Rumbling is the very epitome of perpetuating the cycle of violence as it creates tens of thousands of war orphans like Eren once was, and it would justify employing violence for one's own self-interest to an extreme degree. For the generations to come that would valourize Eren as a hero, it would set a dangerous precedent for what degree of destruction is acceptable for self-defence -- nothing short of the attempt to flatten the entire world. It is no surprise that Paradis would meet a violent end when its founding one-party rule of the Jaegar Faction has their roots in such unapologetically bloody foundations.
Tumblr media
Neither the 80% Rumbling nor the militaristic, ultra-nationalistic Jaegar faction that come to govern Paradis are glamourized as the "correct" solution to ensuring Paradis' future. (This can also put to rest any accusations of SNK's ending as "fascist" or "imperialist" propaganda, since the island's modern nation that they founded ends in war. All nations must fall eventually, but not all do in such blatant destruction). Importantly, neither is Armin's diplomatic mission naively idealized as that which permanently achieves world peace. No singular or unifying formula can work because reality is complicated. Entrusting oneself to seemingly simple Answers is simply insufficient, even if they are ideals of peaceful negotiation; that method may work given the right conditions, but the world will always eventually complicate its feasibility.
After all in the real world, there's the absurd irony that some in the West had called the First World War "The War to End all Wars". These days, WWI is merely one long chapter in our textbooks just a few pages away from the even longer chapter of the Second World War that is followed by all the rest of the conflicts that have followed since then even with the establishment of diplomatic organizations like the United Nations. In this sense, showing Paradis' eventual downfall is perhaps the only way to end such a series that is so concerned with history, from King Fritz's tribal expansion into empire, the rise and fall of Marleyan ascendency, and finally of the survival and apparent shattering of Paradis.
From its beginning to its end, SNK has poignantly evoked J.R.R. Tolkien's conception of history as The Long Defeat. In one character's words, "together through ages of the world we have fought the long defeat". That is to say, "no victory is complete, that evil rises again, and that even victory brings loss".
Tumblr media
No heroes, only humans
Eren's desperate, fatalistic resignation to committing the Rumbling, along with the characters' rejection of all the rest of the earlier plans to ensure Paradis a future, are merely the actions of human beings to that began with the need to find not even necessarily a Final Answer, but at least an acceptable and feasible one for the time being. But the characterization of Eren's confusion, childishness, and regret in the final chapter is startlingly real in how it demonstrates how, all along, we have been dealing not with grand heroes, but simply people who have no answers at all. SNK has always been about failures - and often ironic failures; it has always been a story about painful and frequently futile struggle.
People make mistakes, they can be short-sighted, selfish, biased, immature, petty, and irrational, and I think the ending follows through with depicting the consequences of that.
Tumblr media
Erwin's self-sacrifice before being able to reach the basement (and his regression to a childhood state in the moments before his death), Kenny's futile chasing after that universal compassion he had seen in Uri, Shadis never being acknowledged by history despite his final heroic action, and so on -- these stories of ironic, futile failures are still meaningful in their mere striving. Eren's ending and Paradis' demise despite Armin's endeavour to ensure them a peaceful future are entirely consistent with this.
SNK certainly follows the shounen trope in which young individuals are bestowed great power and correspondingly great responsibility, and must then reconcile the burden of possessing that greatness on which the fate of the world depends. Yet it is equally defined by its representation of the state that us normal human beings confront everyday: the struggle against the apparent powerlessness to enact any meaningful or lasting change at all. Simultaneously, this helpless state does not exempt us from the responsibility to act in whatever small capacity we are able to resist oppression, ideological extremism, and the perpetuation of violence.
Towards That Symbol
That was a rather long but vital digression about the additional "construction and destruction" pages. To return to the issue of the symbolism in the final panel, here I will turn from seemingly affirming the tree as symbolizing the cycle of violence, towards what I think is the greater complexity of what the tree might "actually" symbolize.
As I've said above, I don't believe that the final chapter title is synonymous with 'toward the endless cycle of war'. In tone, theme, and characterization, SNK has always been defined by the tension between cruelty and beauty, the will to violence and the underlying desire for peace, and the rest of the contradictory impulses that all simultaneously coexist. The end of SNK as a whole commits to a similar lack of closure, ambiguity, and interpretive openness.
So far I have rambled on about only a view of the perpetual "cruelty" of history. Where, then, is the "beauty"?
Tumblr media
In short, the "tree = cycle of violence" interpretation is obviously based on how that this tree recalls the original tree in which the spine creature, as the source of the power of the Titans, resided. But it's worth first considering, what exactly is this creature? We seem to get our answer in the chapter that most precisely crystallizes the dual "cruelty and beauty" of the world:
Tumblr media
The spine creature might be said to be life itself. Or more specifically, the will of life to perpetuate itself, for no reason at all but for the fleeting moments in which we feel distinctly glad to have existed in the world.
The creature at the source of the Titans, and in extension the Titans themselves, is neither inherently a positive or negative, "good" or "evil", creative or destructive force. It's both and all of those at once. As with any power, the Titans were merely a tool that was put to use to oppressive ends.
So as I now suggest that the tree at the end is symbolically a "Tree of Life", I don't at all mean "life" in the typically celebratory or optimistic sense: rather, I mean it in the ambiguous, ambivalent, uncertain, and complex sense that has been evoked throughout the above discussion of the inevitable continuation of war.
The title "Toward The Tree on That Hill" is derived from its associations with Eren and Mikasa, but more specifically of course, from Armin's affirmation of existence. However, the tree as a symbol of existential affirmation is undercut with the revelation that, despite Armin's diplomatic mediation between the Allied Nations and Paradis, the island nation never escapes war just as no nation in the history of the earth has ever fully escaped war.
Tumblr media
The image of Armin running toward that life-affirming tree by the end becomes twisted and complicated, as the image of the anonymous child approaching the Tree of Life evokes both awe at its beauty and grandeur, and a deep dread at the foreboding of its cyclical return to Ymir's tree that signalled the beginning of a bloody era.
And I think that is precisely it: Life is not some idealized, beautiful vision that we always want to run toward; it is also ironic, complicated, and dreadful. It is ambivalent. Like a literary symbol, the meaning of life cannot be pinned down absolutely. The tree therefore becomes itself a symbol of uncertainty, of an open future that is cyclical both in its beauty and war.
As a final observation, it is surely no coincidence that, the small, black, birdlike silhouettes of the war planes destroying the city from the sky is replaced by the similarly small black silhouettes of birds in the final panel.
Tumblr media
If the birds represent freedom from war, the irony is that the immediately surrounding land appears to be one completely empty of people save for the exploring child; it is a freedom attained only without people's presence. Yet at the same time, a child from some existing civilization has reached it; perhaps it is freedom that they have reached, perhaps it is something else that they see in the tree. What is it that they were looking for? What does the tree and its history represent for the child, and what does it mean for their future? Alternatively, does the child-in-the-forest imagery negatively recall the warning that the world is one huge forest of predator and prey that we need to protect children from entering?
Rather than providing answers, this tree embodies all of the potential questions, and all of the potential answers. These possibilities will unfold themselves into an uncertain future beyond the chapters of history that Eren, Armin, Mikasa, Zeke, Erwin, and all the rest of the characters were part of and left their mark on; and whatever future this child will witness or create, it will similarly be one of the struggle against futility, as the journey begins anew with each generation in every new era. Neither - or both - hopeful or despairing, the final image of this tree, just like life itself, contains those innumerable irresolvable tensions as it gestures towards all possibilities, both oppressive and free.

Go Stream Your Name Engraved Herein NOW
Iā€™m tired of people dismissing the depth and beauty of works because they donā€™t understand the cultural and historical context and are unwilling to delve deeper. Iā€™ve heard the vocal confusion and dismissal of the short film Bao and the complaints that the Mahjong scene in Crazy Rich Asians was too long and too difficult to understand for people whoā€™ve never played Mahjong. But I wonā€™t let this mentality negatively frame the reception of Your Name Engraved Herein. Iā€™ve read too many interpretations of the movie that will influence how many people will watch it and hinder appreciation for it and I cannot sit idly by. So hereā€™s why I appreciated and loved Your Name Engraved Herein and think that what other people interpreted as shortcomings are actually in fact strengths.Ā
In 2019, Taiwan approved same-sex marriage, marking a step of progress in Asia. Reviews of the film Your Name Engraved Herein view that this forward direction should be celebrated more throughout the film, believing that the heavy mood and painful scenes of bigotry hindered the potential of the film. Many have thought that the toxic values of the past dominated the filmā€™s atmosphere, casting a somber mood and making it difficult to stomach. But I think these elements were essential in reminding us that not everyone had the opportunity to love openly and celebrate, and although Taiwan has made progress, what about those that grew up under a time where such rights were denied?Ā
I think the film is an intimate and beautiful homage to the people who lived through such a difficult time and had to fight for such rights--the directorā€™s own experiences, the reference to activist Chi Chia-wei. Despite the tough topics and the painful bullying that we see, I think the film ends with beautiful light and hope.Ā
Spoilers ahead
Where critically acclaimed and famous Taiwanese films like Us and Them and You Are the Apple of My Eye use flashbacks to create an air of nostalgia and to remind us that maybe all we have to share is our past, untouchable memories, Your Name Engraved Herein uses flashbacks and time leaps to instead paint a more hopeful future. Their first love was an epic story. Itā€™s painful realizing that they never got the same privilege as so many of us to have a happy family or spend life together, growing old. But where the protagonists in Us and Them and You Are the Apple of My Eye only have the past, our Jia-Han and Birdy have the future for the taking. Jia-Hanā€™s younger self once held reservation and denial but he has instead transformed into one willing to accept his love and act on it, searching for Birdy despite the years. Despite the time and distance, they still share the same lively and youthful banter. While one may interpret the ending scene of what couldā€™ve been and what they were cheated of, I like to think of it as a reunion instead. They are finally able to return to maybe the most tumultuous but also happiest time of their life. Now, with the recent change in Taiwan, they finally have a chance to make more memories together.Ā
I loved the framing of the story and think it demanded audience engagement. The movie opens with Jia-Han meeting Birdy. We then see that Jia-Han is reminiscing about his story with Birdy to the priest from Montreal that works at the Catholic all-boyā€™s boarding school. Immediately, Jia-Hanā€™s and Birdyā€™s connection is apparent. They have furtive glances, genuine concern, and intimate moments. Birdy at first seems free-spirited, without fear of the opinions of others and authority. Heā€™s vocal, righteous, and a bit rebellious. Jia-Han, in contrast, is more timid, constantly aware of the opinions of others and the rules. While he knows what is wrong and feels bad about it, he often follows or acts as a complacent party. But as Birdy and Jia-Han witness the detaining of activist Chi Chia-wei, we see that Birdy is more introspective and serious, unable to turn a blind-eye of the issues still prevalent despite the recent end of martial law in Taiwan. And Jia-Han, in the presence of Birdy, is more carefree and happy. Itā€™s as if they have switched and turned off their outside persona. Birdyā€™s impulsivity gives Jia-Han joy and only Jia-Hanā€™s presence can qualm Birdyā€™s inner thoughts and worries. We get to see how these characters deeply value each other. As the evening sets and the world around falls to slumber, it feels as if they are the only ones in the world and we, as viewers, are fully immersed in their story. The cinematography is halting as we see them zoom around in the city alone, untouched and in their own worlds.Ā
Jia-Han feels as if the world revolved only around them. So when Ban-Ban walks into the picture, I was awed by Jia-Hanā€™s portrayal of jealousy and felt his pain because he was unable to walk by the side of Birdy in the way that he wanted to. The actorā€™s body language sells a stellar performance, but it is the dialogue and outburst at the father who is attempting to tend to Jia-Hanā€™s wounds that show Jia-Hanā€™s raw and powerful emotions. Whether or not it was intentional by the director, I think at this moment we question the timeline and framing of the story. What events led up to this moment with Jia-Hanā€™s major head wound? When the priest saysĀ ā€œIf he doesnā€™t love you, donā€™t force him toā€ and ā€œcare doesnā€™t necessarily mean love,ā€ I was stunned by this exchange, thinking that it was quite evident that Birdy and Jia-Han had love for each other. But then it made me ponder if this narrative told only from Jia-Hanā€™s point of view was a deliberate choice made for us to question perspective and reality, how our vision becomes tainted when our feelings are involved. The powerful performance and film raised such immediate questions, causing wonder as we viewed the film in real time instead of afterwards, which made for a delightful and thought-provoking experience.Ā
In a truly climatic point, we finally see how all of the events led to the current moment. We see how Jia-Han gets a head injury and how the priest becomes his confidant. This pivotal mark not only has an approximately two hour momentum, but it is also powerfully performed by our two leads who at this point are passionate, protective, and broken-hearted. We witness a full range of love. Initially, at the beginning, we saw subtle and restrained affection, fleeting touches, and silent companionship. But as the story progresses, we see that these feelings can no longer be bottled. There are moments of visible and passionate concern and instinctual attempts at protection. This development shows the complexity, beauty, and pain of love. It is truly a breath-taking thing to see come alive on screen. While Jia-Han at this point becomes ready to vocalize and admit his feelings, Birdy is unable to and their lives diverge.Ā
A time leap gives us privy to Jia-Hanā€™s closure. After he visits the resting grounds of the priest from his high-school days, he is able to offer his support to who is hinted to be the priestā€™s lover, reassuring that he was a good man, that the love was true, and that he will go to heaven. The reveal that the priest is gay encourages viewers to rewatch the dialogue with this new information to help drive our new interpretations.Ā
Already, I have re-watched this tear-jerking film a number of times. The steady pacing makes each scene seem essential despite the long 1 hour and 54 minute run time. Yet it passes quickly and we are left yearning for more. Aesthetically pleasing, the beautiful shots underscored by the accompanying, swelling music provide stunning visuals. As the camera focuses on the two leads, their outbursts donā€™t appear as overly done or too dramatic. Rather, the performances feel heart-breakingly real. In part, I think this is built on the focus on the details. The camera seems to linger a little longer on the faces of the actors, making us fully digest what they are conveying to us. This attention to detail highlights everything spoken and unspoken.Ā
I highly recommend this film. It reminds us that not everyone is fortunate and we all still have room for progress. But simultaneously it is tender and heart-warming, moving and touching, poignant and thoughtful. The powerful dynamic between the leads, the artistic filming, and the strong performance elevate this film to a truly inspiring, epic love story. Everything about it feels deliberate, personal and handcrafted gift for us to truly treasure. So I will cherish it and share it and I hope you do too.

; A/N: So...this is it šŸ˜¢ Flower is officially over! I started writing this on November 15th, 2019. Almost a year later, here we are with 40 chapters, 3 drabbles and 180k of words. Can you believe I actually finished it? I hope youā€™ve all enjoyed reading it and the journey of the MC finding herself and falling in love with Hoseok. Itā€™s been so fun to write and itā€™s sad to let it go. If youā€™ve enjoyed reading this, please let me know with a comment or an ask! Iā€™ve loved reading how much youā€™ve all felt seen or embraced by the MC with her struggles and Iā€™d love to hear your thoughts on not only this chapter but the whole fic! Feedback is what keeps authors going and I came very close to leaving writing once Flower was finished but Iā€™m still going to carry on. Iā€™m not sure if this chapter is good or not, but I hope you enjoy it anyway and think it a fitting end to the story!

ā€œOkay...okay. Letā€™s do this...you can do this. Itā€™s easy. Just...walk down the aisle. I mean, whatā€™s the worst that could happen? Well, Hoseok could not be there or I could have a heart attack and drop down dead. That would suck. But it would resolve a lot of my issues, I wouldnā€™t have to worry about everyone watching me. On the other hand...Iā€™m going to marry the love of my life. As long as he turns upā€ The soft sounds of your muttering are probably barely heard over the soft playing music through the speakers in the room, YouTube playing mindlessly to itself.
It was a good job, as it meant that no one else in the room could hear your panicked thoughts that were being verbalised. Hoseok and you had decided to get married at an exquisite mansion hotel with the ceremony itself being in the elegant gardens outside. There was a full-sized maze alongside a stunning fountain, the centrepiece being a marble depiction of Aphrodite rising from the shallows.
Youā€™d taken a walk around the perfectly groomed gardens the night before, taking in all the decorations that youā€™d painstakingly picked out over the months that had been artfully arranged by the staff. The flowers in the gardens were beautiful, a smorgasbord of pinks, oranges, violets, reds and yellows that brought the whole area to life. Alongside it looking visually perfect, it also smelled amazing as well with the soft scent of different flowers mixing.
At night, the tiny fairy lights that had been strung up around the building front and the metal trellises that were organised in the garden gave off a soft, golden glow. It made the whole place look ethereal and you were excited for everyone else to get to see it during the reception tonight.
The actual wedding ceremony was scheduled to start at two in the afternoon, with only friends and family invited for that. It would be outside as well, with Hoseok and you standing at the end of a make-shift aisle on the lawn section of the hotelā€™s garden. Temporary chairs had been arranged on both sides for your guests, dark wood with ivory silk draped over everyone. At the end of the aisle, each chair had a silk bow in ivory and deep purple alongside a bouquet of specially arranged flowers.Ā
It all looked perfect and youā€™d marvelled at it yesterday, amazed that theyā€™d managed to bring your vision to life. Now all you had to do was walk down it and get married, which was where you were a little panicked.
The room that had been assigned to the bridal party was on the lower floor of the hotel, reducing the risk of you potentially killing yourself by tripping over your dress while walking down the stairs. It was technically two hotel rooms connected through a shared bathroom, which you found bizarre.
Your mom and Hoseokā€™s mom had taken the other room for their use to get changed, the hairdresser and makeup artist theyā€™d hired working there to make them look their best for the ceremony. Even now, you could hear them chattering and laughing away with each other. Even through your anxiety, you canā€™t help but smile as you hear them get on so well.
Any fears youā€™d had about them not liking each other had quickly disappeared. Instead, theyā€™d become good friends and liked to meet up now and then to have a talk over coffee or something. It pleased you to see your mom getting to have more friends.
Eden and Amelia had also chosen to get ready in that room, not wanting to crowd the one you were in too much. It was already full of dresses and a ridiculous amount of makeup and hair product with only four of you so you couldnā€™t even imagine the chaos with five of you.
In your room was Soyeon, Chungha and Dahyun alongside you. Dahyun was currently three months pregnant, having successfully been inseminated with Jungkookā€™s sperm. Heā€™d agreed to their request and after a few months of getting prepared for the attempts, Dahyun had undergone the procedure. What it had been exactly, you didnā€™t know because you hadnā€™t felt it was your business to pry into something like that.
It was a privilege to even know they were trying before anyone else. Their announcement had come at your bachelorette party when Dahyun had refused alcohol, immediately leading Soyeon and you to be suspicious. Youā€™d never seen Chunghaā€™s beloved ever turn down a drink so it had been a clear sign of something at least.
Needless to say, your party had happily become a celebration of their impending baby. Thankfully, you werenā€™t one of those people who got overly annoyed at others announcing things at events. Or at least, not big events. Your bachelorette party had been a perfect time to find out, whereas you might not have been so amenable if theyā€™d told everyone today instead.
That was normal though, right? Today was your day. Yours and Hoseokā€™s. People who felt the need to co-opt special days like that were a special type of self-absorbed in your opinion.
Given it was so early into her pregnancy, Dahyun isn't showing that much. Which meant her bridesmaid dress hadnā€™t needed to be altered too much. None of them has gotten into their dresses just yet, instead currently in the process of getting their face and hair done. Chunghaā€™s hair has already been done, elegantly styled into a beautiful updo with a few tendrils curled around her face.
The makeup for the girls was a smokey eye with subtle blush and contour, alongside a neutral lip. It wasnā€™t anything flashy, but youā€™d loved the concept of it all. Particularly with the small and delicate crystals that dotted along their waterline, adding a little sparkle to match the tiny crystals on their deep violet dresses.
As a present to each of them, youā€™d bought them a gift set from Pandora. In each one was a pair of dainty stud earrings with a heart design alongside a matching heart-shaped pendant necklace. All the hearts were encrusted with brilliant-cut stones, making the perfect gift that could be used again in the future for casual use.
Theyā€™d all been in awe of it and surprised at being given presents as well. You hadnā€™t even known it was a thing until youā€™d looked up wedding preparation online, discovering that you should also buy something for Hoseok. Which had led to you buying him the fancy watch heā€™d been drooling over for months now. It had been eye-watering expensive, but it had been worth it for his excited text this morning.
Along with the watch, youā€™d also written him a letter. It was meant to be light-hearted and fun, but youā€™d ended up writing way too much as youā€™d poured out your love to him alongside everything you felt for him. To your eternal embarrassment, youā€™d ended up crying while writing it as youā€™d told him everything youā€™d never been able to vocalise, including writing possibly a million times that you love him.
Heā€™d been instructed to not read that until just before the ceremony.
His present to you was a gaming table, which might not seem to be very sentimental to anyone else but youā€™d been ecstatic over it. For years now, youā€™d been saying that you wanted to buy a proper table that was designed for board games and that could then be used as a normal table when converted. They were super expensive so youā€™d resigned yourself to never getting one, but heā€™d printed out the receipt of what heā€™d ordered and put it into an envelope for you to open tonight.
Neither of you had ever been a traditional couple, and that certainly wasnā€™t about to change with marriage.
ā€œHey, you okay?ā€ Amelia asks, interrupting your intense thought process as she sits down next to you. As usual, her aura is warm and reassuring as she reaches over to gently squeeze at your hand. You donā€™t spend a huge amount of time around her, but you knew both Eden and her enough to want them in your bridal party.
ā€œYes? No? Maybe? I donā€™t know. Iā€™m justā€¦ā€ Trailing off, you struggle to find the right words and instead gesture towards the air. It makes no sense but you canā€™t quite figure out what youā€™re trying to say. Mainly because you canā€™t figure out what your mind is thinking.
ā€œItā€™s okay to be worried, donā€™t feel like you shouldnā€™t be. If youā€™re anxious or nervous then thatā€™s okay as well. Donā€™t let anyone tell you how you should be feeling, just feel what you are. Trust Hoseok, trust yourself and all your family and friends. Weā€™re all here for you and we want you to have the best day possible. Tell us if anything is wrong, okay? I have no doubt that Chungha and Soyeon would strong-arm everyone into whatever was necessary to make you feel comfortable.ā€ She says, smirking as she nods over to the two women who are chattering away in their respective chairs.
ā€œI know, I know. Iā€™m trying. Itā€™s just...god, everyone is going to be staring at me and I hate being the centre of attention,ā€ Looking down at your hands, you chew at your lips. ā€œWhat if I mess up the vows? Or I freeze or drop the ring?ā€
ā€œHey, itā€™s normal to feel that. I doubt thereā€™s anyone whoā€™s gotten married who wasnā€™t at least a little bit anxious about messing something up. Yes, everyone is here to watch you, but theyā€™re for Hoseok too. Iā€™m sure heā€™s just as worried that he might make a mistake, and if you do then, so what? Itā€™s not going to ruin anything, it just means your human. If anything, people will probably find it endearing. The only person you should concern yourself with is Hoseok, and I doubt thereā€™s anything you could do today to ruin the day for him. Unless you donā€™t go.ā€ Amelia laughs when you give a shocked gasp, jaw-dropping open and eyes wide.
ā€œI would never do that! But what if he decides he doesnā€™t want to get married anymore?ā€ Now the worry that had wiggled itself deep inside your mind comes to the fore and you find yourself almost whispering the words. It feels like a betrayal to Hoseok for even thinking heā€™d do that, but you canā€™t help the fear.
You must not have been quite enough though as Chungha speaks up, facing you in her chair with a stern expression on her face as she wags her finger. ā€œLady, do not think that. I donā€™t want that thought to even enter your head. As if Jung Hoseok is ever going to back out now. I think that man wouldā€™ve eloped with you if youā€™d asked instead. Heā€™s going to be standing at the end of that aisle, probably bawling like a baby.ā€
ā€œMaybe not that far.ā€ This is from Eden, whoā€™s laid out on the bed in the centre of the room, playing Zelda on her Switch. Sheā€™d had her makeup done earlier and is now waiting for the hairdresser to be free while Amelia is waiting for her makeup. All of you had decided that youā€™d be last to get ready to make sure that everything looked as fresh as possible.
ā€œWant to bet? That man is gonna be sobbing.ā€ This starts up a whole ten-minute discussion about whether or not Hoseok was going to cry at seeing you. Namjoon hadnā€™t cried but Jimin had during their weddings, surprising no one. But Namjoon had cried at the birth of his daughter.
You werenā€™t sure, to be honest. Hoseok didnā€™t cry all that often and you could probably count on one hand how many times youā€™d seen it over four years. On top of that, you werenā€™t entirely sure that you wanted to see him crying. It made your chest hurt when he did and you always ended up crying too.
Something about seeing strong and proud men cry was just heartbreaking to you.Ā
For a while, you just sit back and let the conversation wash over you as they all debate and borderline argue, intensely amongst themselves. Theyā€™d all switched around now and theyā€™ll soon start getting into their bridesmaidā€™s dresses, which meant youā€™d be finally getting ready.
Your nails had been done the night before with a beautiful design in the same colour scheme as the wedding. They looked so pretty and elegant, which was a surprise to you every time you looked at them as you never really bothered doing your nails. While you liked to do fancy makeup looks now and then to post onto social media, nails were not something you were interested in.
Maybe you should reassess that thought.
ā€œAnyway, what weā€™re all trying, and failing, to say is that Hoseok loves you and if he doesnā€™t cry then heā€™s crying inside at how beautiful you are.ā€ Soyeon states firmly, sitting next to you and admiring your nails as well. All the bridesmaids had the same style to keep the theme going and she wiggled her fingers with a bright smile.
ā€œIā€™m not even ready yet, you donā€™t know if Iā€™ll be beautiful.ā€
Thereā€™s dead silence in the room after the comment, with even the hairdresser and makeup artist turning to stare at you. Between the six other women in the room, youā€™re pretty sure that theyā€™ve got every emotion from shock to annoyance to incredulity covered. Feeling yourself get warm at their attention, you look down to your lap in embarrassment.
Obviously, the wrong thing to say.
ā€œOkay, weā€™re going to ignore that you just said that. You donā€™t need to be dolled up and in a wedding dress to be beautiful, itā€™s just going to enhance what you already have. And I donā€™t want any arguments on that.ā€ Poking your side lightly, you playfully wince at Soyeon as she scolds you. Everyone else is nodding along solemnly before they carry on with whatever theyā€™d been doing.
ā€œSeriously though, I overheard your conversation with Amelia. Sheā€™s right. Embrace your feelings but donā€™t let them overwhelm you. Standing in front of a crowd is nerve-wracking for anyone, but youā€™ve got the love of your life standing there with you. Just focus on Hoseok, heā€™ll get you through it. He always has, right?ā€ Soyeon said.
Giving her a half-smile, you nod and do a remarkably good job of looking like a scolded child or something. You know itā€™s just because she loves you that she doesnā€™t want you to berate yourself, along with the fact that she knows what youā€™re like. If someone doesnā€™t verbally acknowledge your problems then youā€™ll just obsess over them.
Your phone screen lights up in your lap before it begins to vibrate suddenly, Hoseokā€™s name visible on the screen. Frowning down at it, you wonder why heā€™s calling before a multitude of emotions and thoughts runs through your mind.
ā€œGo take it in the bathroom.ā€ Pulling you up, Soyeon practically pushes you into the bathroom before giving you a smile and a thumbs-up as she closes the door.
Seeing the other door is also open, you peek out and let everyone in that room know that youā€™d be using the bathroom for a few minutes and to not come in. Once you get the acknowledgement, you close and lock it as well before pushing up to sit on the counter.
ā€œHobi! Why are you calling?ā€ Leaning back against the mirror, you frown deeply as you question him. The first response is just his familiar deep chuckle, the sound already helping to soothe some of your frayed nerves.
ā€œAmelia texted Joon, who told me. I donā€™t want you to stress yourself out! Not today, todayā€™s meant to be a happy day. No stress. Or anxiety.ā€ Snorting, you roll your eyes as you trace an invisible design onto your thigh.
ā€œSure, like thatā€™s gonna happen. You know me. And why are you calling? Weā€™re not meant to see each other until the wedding, itā€™s bad luck!ā€ Thereā€™s a brief pause and you can practically hear him rolling his eyes, the deep sigh he lets out telling you all you need to know.
ā€œMeeps, Iā€™m pretty sure that only counts for physically seeing each other. I canā€™t see you right now. I donā€™t recall anything about not being allowed to hear you, or talk to you. Besides, we make our luck.ā€ He sounds so nonchalant and now itā€™s your turn to sigh at him.
ā€œYouā€™re going to get us hit by lightning or something.ā€
ā€œImpossible, the weather schedule for today is meant to be sunny with a little bit of cloud later on. Nice warm temperatures that arenā€™t too hot but also not too cold. Perfect. No lightning.ā€ His immediate rebuttal has you laughing, unable to stay mad at him for too long. Not when heā€™s trying so hard to take your mind off things.
ā€œSeriously though, are you okay? What are you worried about? Talk to me.ā€ Hoseok asks, his voice calm and steady as he stops joking around. Thereā€™s a brief moment of resistance, the thought that you donā€™t want to bother him with your silly thoughts or annoying emotions before you remember that you can trust him. No matter how ridiculous it sounds in your head, Hoseok will listen and he wonā€™t make fun of you.
ā€œIā€™m just...scared. Of all the people. Like, theyā€™re going to be watching me or staring. What if I look fat or ugly? Or I fuck up saying the vows? Or I drop the ring or my dress splits or something? Or if I trip down the aisle?! Or if you decide you donā€™t want to marry me anymore?ā€ As you begin to reel off the questions that have been plaguing your mind, you can feel your chest getting a little tighter and your breathing shallower.
With the practised ease of someone whoā€™s dealt with your panic attacks over the years, Hoseok makes calming and reassuring noises over the phone until youā€™re silent. Just listening to him, you take in the comforting words as he lets you know that youā€™re okay and everything is fine. Finally, once he thinks youā€™re calm enough, he carries on.
ā€œMeeps, thatā€™s fine. Donā€™t be upset that youā€™re having those thoughts. Iā€™ve had every one of those thoughts today as well. I mean...not the dress one. Substitute that for pants splitting or something, which is even more embarrassing because my underwear is not black today. But the point Iā€™m trying to make here is that itā€™s normal to have those thoughts today. Iā€™d probably be more worried if you werenā€™t having them.ā€ He pauses to laugh before you hear shuffling noises.
Thereā€™s no doubt heā€™s probably not even getting into his tuxedo just yet and you curse the fact that men take far less time to get ready than women. Heā€™ll probably only start like...an hour before the ceremony begins or something.
ā€œBut all Iā€™ll say is, it doesnā€™t matter if anything goes wrong because weā€™ll fix it. You and me, just like always. You wonā€™t look fat or ugly because youā€™re neither fat nor ugly anyway, instead, youā€™ll be the most beautiful woman here. Which you always are to me but donā€™t let my mom hear me tell you that. And Iā€™m going to be standing at the end of the aisle, I promise you that. Iā€™m the one who proposed to you and I will be there, waiting for you. Thatā€™s one thing I can assure you of completely.ā€ Hoseok says this firmly, his voice perhaps more serious than youā€™ve ever heard it before.
You can practically feel his determination to make you understand that heā€™s going to be there. That heā€™s going to marry you today, no matter what happens. It makes your heart swell with love and emotion, causing you to press your hand against your mouth.
Hoseok takes your silence as a positive, choosing to let it carry on for a little longer before speaking once more.
ā€œI love you, Meeps. And by the end of today, youā€™re going to be my wife. Weā€™re going to have a great day with a beautiful ceremony and a fun reception before probably going to bed drunk. Or at least, Iā€™m going to be drunk. Not entirely sure if Iā€™ll be able to take you to Poundtown tonight-ā€
ā€œDonā€™t ever say that again.ā€Ā
ā€œBut if not tonight then definitely tomorrow. Unless you donā€™t want me to drink, in which case probably tonight if youā€™re up for it.ā€ Shaking your head, you canā€™t help but smile at his stupid comments. He always knew how to cheer you up, even if it was with the most ridiculous thing youā€™d heard today.
ā€œYou can drink, Iā€™m not going to make you sober throughout the entire reception. I want you to have fun with everyone, so if you end up drunk then thatā€™s fine. Just donā€™t go overboard.ā€
ā€œChoosing to ignore my Poundtown comments, I see.ā€Ā
ā€œJung Hoseok, I am going to hang up now. I will see you later, okay?ā€
ā€œOkay. Love you.ā€ Feeling a little shy, you murmur your next words into the phone.
ā€œLove you too.ā€
-
The ceremony is officially about to start and you stare at the open door, knowing that outside all your guests are waiting. Not only that, but Hoseok is at the end of the aisle. Youā€™d been reassured by everyone there who had peeked out to make sure, quelling your fears and worries.
All the groomsmen had come inside upon finding out you were here, lining themselves up alongside their specified bridesmaid partners and chatting away happily. They all looked incredibly handsome in their suits, the colours matching the bridesmaids perfectly and you felt a little pride at having thought of a good colour scheme.
Your mom is fussing around you, making sure that your dress looks perfect and that your bouquet hasnā€™t fallen apart or anything. Sighing, you gently push her hands away as she tries once more to move your necklace.
All of them had given you something as part of the tradition for the bride. Dahyun had lent you a beautiful Cartier bracelet, glowing with diamonds, as part of the ā€˜something borrowedā€™ while Chungha had bought you diamond earrings for the ā€˜something newā€™. Your mom had given you the bracelet sheā€™d worn for her wedding, now occupying your other wrist and Hoseokā€™s mom had provided the necklace adorning your neck.
It was a beautiful silver necklace with a dainty leaf design, leading to the main piece in the centre which was dotted with tiny diamonds. Each leaf spreading out had either amethyst or an aquamarine gem in alternating order. Sheā€™d ordered it specially made for your wedding, matching your engagement ring with the gems and fulfilling the ā€˜something blueā€™.
Youā€™d been amazed at everything theyā€™d given you, understanding now why theyā€™d all told you now to buy any jewellery for the day. Theyā€™d all decided to make sure you had everything you needed anyway.
But you knew that your momā€™s need to keep straightening out your dress or brushing away unseen dust was just to keep herself preoccupied. Sheā€™d already cried once when youā€™d come out in your wedding dress, makeup and hair all done. That had earned her an exasperated sigh from the makeup artist.
ā€œMom, mom, come on,ā€ You coo to her, smiling before taking her hands and squeezing. ā€œYou gotta go out there, go get your place.ā€Ā
She hesitates for a moment, unwilling to leave you before nodding. After a few words of reassurance from her to you, telling you that youā€™re going to do well and itā€™s all going to go fine, she turns and hugs your dad tightly before kissing him. Youā€™d feel embarrassed at the sight of it, never quite being comfortable with your parents' displays of affection, but it just causes you to laugh softly.
Once sheā€™s out the door, you hear the music begin from outside, the notes flowing through the door faintly. Everyone inside quietens and you can almost feel the excitement ramp up. It just makes you feel more nervous though, particularly when they start to head out in their pairs slowly.
ā€œAre you ready?ā€ Your dad asks, his eyes already going glassy with tears as his lip wobbles slightly. Giving him a concerned look, you immediately reach up to wipe the tears as they start to fall, feeling your heartbreak at the sight of your dad crying. He never cried.
ā€œDad! Donā€™t cry, oh my god. Iā€™m sorry.ā€ Cleaning up his face quickly, youā€™re stopped by the gentle way he grasps your wrists. For a moment, you think that heā€™s going to push you away but instead, he pulls you closer and carefully hugs you.
Itā€™s a little awkward as youā€™re trying not to ruin the carefully done hair and makeup, but you canā€™t deny your dad a hug. Especially when youā€™d never really been much of a hugger growing up. You would be cruel to deny him one, especially on your wedding day. Your parents were feeling emotional that their little girl was getting married today.
ā€œItā€™s okay, sweetheart. Itā€™s just your old dad getting sappy. You look so beautiful. Hoseok is so lucky, you better remind him of that every day.ā€ Heā€™s pulled back now, giving you the softest smile that is still a little watery. His hands move to your shoulders and he stands back to examine you fully, his eyes taking in everything.
Before you can respond to him, Yoongi is disappearing out of the door and heading towards the aisle. Heā€™s alone, as youā€™d planned, but in one hand is the bouquet that Hoseokā€™s sister wouldā€™ve held had she still been alive. It had been his suggestion to hold it, symbolising the family member that Hoseok didnā€™t have anymore and youā€™d been more than willing to agree.
You wondered what Hoseok thought when he saw it as neither of you had told him that Yoongi would be holding it. Hopefully, he was happy with it, along with his parents.
Turning back to you, your dad squeezes your shoulders reassuringly before smiling at you. Ironically, all it does is make you more nervous as you realise that now youā€™re the one whoā€™s going to have to walk down that aisle next.Ā
ā€œCome on, itā€™s time to make your fiancĆ© cry.ā€ His words in a teasing tone, your dad turns to face the door before offering you his arm. Standing there, you stare at him before looking at the door with trepidation. Nerves roil in your stomach as you hear the faint sound of music playing, knowing that everyone out there is waiting for you.
Which in turn means everyone will be staring at you.
Those nerves quickly turn to anxiety and your breath comes faster, chest feeling a little constricted by the tight bodice of the dress. Without even realising it, your hands start to shake and the bouquet in them shudders visibly.
Quickly, your dad takes the bouquet from you to make sure that you donā€™t accidentally deflower them or crush the stems. The last thing you needed was to ruin your perfect bouquet only minutes before you were supposed to walk down the aisle.
It frees up your hands and you find yourself flapping them as you stress, trying to shake out the negative emotions as you pant. Your dadā€™s eyes widen, obviously panicking himself at your obvious distress. Heā€™s never had to deal with you struggling like this before and he doesnā€™t know what to do but his paternal instincts kick in quickly.
ā€œHey, come on, sweetheart. Breathe, breathe. Take a big breath in, come on, thatā€™s it. Not let it out slowly. And again, thatā€™s right.ā€ Talking to you in his comforting voice, tone level and low, you follow his instructions and start to feel a little calmer as you force yourself to calm your breathing. Itā€™s hard, and you still feel the anxiety but it feels a little more manageable now.
Closing your eyes, you run through all the tips your therapist had given you for how to cope with anxiety attacks. What worked for you was to sing in your head, the lyrics, whatever song you were loving lately. It probably takes longer than youā€™d have liked but finally you feel like you can cope with your emotions enough to carry on.
When you open your eyes again, your dad is giving you an expectant, yet worried, look. Shaking your hands once more, you reach out and take the bouquet from him before taking a deep breath. Linking your arm through his, you straighten your shoulders and lift your chin before smiling at him.
ā€œOkay, okay. Letā€™s go.ā€
-
Walking down the aisle is surprisingly less stressful than youā€™d imagined. The famous wedding song plays through the air as you walk slowly and the whole atmosphere feels almost like a fairytale. The soft lights twinkle even in the daylight while the gentle, warm breeze makes the ribbons on the chairs flutter delicately.
Along the floor, the white and purple rose petals that Namjoonā€™s daughter had spread in her role as flower girl were strewn haphazardly. A few of them caught the breeze and rolled delicately to a new place, making it seem like the floor was consistently changing. You liked it, smiling at the sight of how beautiful everything looked.
Everyone was staring at you, as youā€™d expected, but surprisingly it wasnā€™t as intimidating as youā€™d thought. You didnā€™t exactly enjoy it but it wasnā€™t terrible. Probably because you were more focused on initially admiring how perfect everything looked. How months and months of thought and money had finally accumulated into the perfect wedding.
But mostly, you werenā€™t as bothered by the staring because you were focused on the end of the aisle. There was no real altar here, given that it was being held at a hotel and everything, but the metal garden arch at the end had been decorated in delicate flowers, ribbons and lights to make an even better end.
And beneath it stood Hoseok.
If youā€™d ever thought Hoseok looked handsome before then it paled in comparison to him today. His black tuxedo made him look tall and slim, every part of him looking perfectly put together and elegant. The deep purple waistcoat beneath his jacket contrasted with the white of his shirt perfectly; the colour combination making his skin almost glow with health and happiness.
There was only the slightest hint of tattoos at the edge of his collar, leaving to the imagination the artwork he had permanently on his body beneath his clothes but you didnā€™t need to imagine. Youā€™d seen them all, traced them delicately into your memory over the years until you could point out where they were without even seeing them.
Finally reaching him, you paused to look at your dad and gave him a bright smile of gratitude before giving him a second hug. This one was a little tighter than before and when you let go of him, you saw that he was crying once more. He didnā€™t give your hand to Hoseok, instead just gave him a stern look while trying to surreptitiously wipe away his tears.
ā€œYou look after her, Jung Hoseok. You make sure sheā€™s the happiest woman.ā€ Thereā€™s iron in his voice, telling Hoseok that it wasnā€™t a question but more a command. But thereā€™s also love and affection in it, something Hoseok can tell as well by the way he nods his head.
Handing your bouquet to Chungha, you take Hoseokā€™s proffered hand. Up close, you can take in the details of his face better and you take a moment to simply admire him and imprint him into your memory.
The sides of his head had been shaven, the undercut short and seen with the style heā€™d chosen to wear today. His hair had been styled back, pushed away from his forehead. It was a look that had made you weak in the knees many times over the years and youā€™d practically begged him to have it for the wedding, knowing that heā€™d blow everyoneā€™s mind with how handsome he looked.
Hoseok had a face that looked like it had been hand-carved by the gods from the finest marble anyway and this hairstyle showed off all the highlights of his face. The high cheekbones that made his smiles so animated, his cutting jawline, the clean slope of his nose, the heart-shaped smile that lit his entire face and the dimples that made him seem so human.Ā
His lip ring was still in, the silver shining in the sunlight. Heā€™d been unsure whether to wear it but youā€™d told him to embrace himself and keep it. Youā€™d fallen in love with him as he was, and you wanted him to show himself how you saw him. Which included his piercings and tattoos.
Your heart clenched though when you looked into his eyes finally. Hoseokā€™s eyes were one of your favourite things about him. The crescents they turned into when he smiled brightly, pushed into the shape by his cheeks and the way his eyes could practically dance with delight when he was happy.
Today though, those beautiful and expressive eyes were watery with tears. The wet streak on his cheek told you that heā€™d already had some of them fall and you frowned at the sight of them. Everyone had been right; Hoseok had cried upon seeing you down the aisle.
ā€œBaby.ā€ You whisper, unsure if youā€™re meant to talk to him. Deciding you donā€™t care, you reach up to wipe away the tears and smile when he kisses the palm of your hand before nuzzling into it, uncaring of everyone else.
ā€œMeeps, you look perfect. I read your letter, I love you too.ā€ Before you can stop him, heā€™s leaning forward and pressing a quick kiss to your lips. Thereā€™s a murmur in the crowd, alongside some laughter and he looks over at everyone with a raised brow.
No one says anything though and he gets a satisfied look, ignoring your shy expression as you turn away from everyone.
ā€œYouā€™re not supposed to do that.ā€ Keeping your voice low, you give a hesitant smile to the official who will be taking you both through your ceremony. Hoseok lets out a snort of laughter as he squeezes your hand tight, letting his thumb run along the back of your hand lovingly.
ā€œI donā€™t care. Itā€™s our wedding, Iā€™ll do what I want.ā€ And before you can stop him, he turns you and gives you another kiss, this one lingering a little longer. Eyes widening, you canā€™t help but giggle as you hear yet more laughter.
You should be annoyed at him, but you know heā€™s a force of nature. Plus, you donā€™t care. It feels nice to know he canā€™t help himself.
ā€œOkay, letā€™s get married, Meeps.ā€ He grins at you before facing the officiant once more. Staring at him a moment longer, you smile at him and nod.
ā€œLetā€™s get married.ā€

Hobi Hobi,
Weā€™re getting married today! Are you excited? I hope youā€™re reading this when I told you to, if not then youā€™re cheating >:[ it feels weird to write a letter. I donā€™t even know if Iā€™ve ever done this before, so Iā€™m sorry if it sounds really cheesy and lame. What do people write in these normally? Iā€™m just going to write what comes to mind so if it ends up sappy then youā€™re not allowed to tease me later about it.Ā
Anyway, I want you to know that Iā€™m sorry that I suck so much at telling you how I feel and my emotions. I wish I could be one of those people whoā€™s telling you every moment how handsome you are and how much I love you but I canā€™t. Iā€™m sorry :( Iā€™m trying, I swear! Even if I donā€™t get to tell you as often as you deserve, I hope you know that I love you more than anything in the world.
Donā€™t ever forget that, okay? Even when weā€™re arguing over something silly or we go to bed mad at each other, donā€™t forget that. I know weā€™re pretty good at talking things out but thereā€™s always that chance that we could have a big blowout. So I want you to remember that I love you.Ā
Iā€™m still not entirely sure what I did to deserve you, but I donā€™t regret sending you that message. If anything, I think I should send the Flower team a big bunch of flowers or something for creating the algorithm that brought you up as a match. Imagine if it hadnā€™t and Iā€™d just deleted the app, weā€™d have never met and Iā€™d still be lonely and sad.
But we did meet, and I took a chance on you by sending you that embarrassing message. And then you took a chance by actually meeting up with me and going on that date. I still remember it, and I donā€™t know if I ever told you but I still have the ticket for the escape room. I know you still have yours in your wallet :) Thank you for giving me your time, even if I wasnā€™t your type. I hope Iā€™m your type now.
Iā€™m not sure that I will ever be able to tell you how important you are to me. Not only myself but my life. Youā€™ve helped me to embrace myself and learn to love myself over the years through kindness. I know my limits in terms of my mental health now and youā€™ve helped to support me with the medication and the therapist. Neither of those were things Iā€™d been comfortable with doing before your encouragement. But you also gave me a safe space to break down in; somewhere that I knew I could be at my most vulnerable mentally without having to risk being hurt even more.
You held me when I cried, you comforted me when I panicked and you calmed my anxiety over the years. I can never thank you enough for helping me to understand that these arenā€™t deficiencies and Iā€™m not broken. I just need a little help to get through things sometimes. At the same time, I hope that Iā€™ve become that safe space for you as well. I know that youā€™re not as emotional as I am, but I feel that youā€™ve opened up to me about things that hurt you. Iā€™ll keep your secrets safe and Iā€™ll always be here for you!
I hope youā€™re happy with your life now. With me, and our home and our furbabies. I hope you stay happy, and if you donā€™t then talk to me. Please. I donā€™t want us to ever realise that weā€™re making each other unhappy and I donā€™t want to ever be the reason for negativity. I want to spend the rest of my life with you in our little home, growing old together as we play board games and dote on our animals while you increase your tattoo collection even more. I know that people like to say that they canā€™t imagine their lives with their significant other, but I really do feel like that.
My life without you would be hollow and monochrome, as you bring colour to my world and fill it with joy and happiness. Iā€™ve never laughed as much as I have these last few years with you and I know weā€™ll keep that in our relationship if we try hard.Ā
I donā€™t really know where this letter is going and Iā€™m babbling now. But I guess the main thing is just that I canā€™t wait to marry you. It may not be very feminist of me but I canā€™t wait to take your name and be your wife. I canā€™t wait to call you my husband. Iā€™m going to be terrified in the ceremony and so nervous but Iā€™ll be happy too, I promise! I still canā€™t believe that you picked me, out of all the women youā€™ve seen, to be your girlfriend and then decided that you wanted to marry me.
Jung Hoseok, I solemnly swear to treasure you for the rest of your life and make sure you know how much I love you. I might not be able to tell you all that much, but Iā€™ll show you. Iā€™ll make you smile and laugh, Iā€™ll buy you things that make me think of you, Iā€™ll hug you tight and cuddle you until youā€™re complaining.
So in case it wasnā€™t obvious enough, I love you. I just want you to know because I know I suck at telling you, like I said. Iā€™m also bad at writing letters but whatā€™s new? Iā€™ll finish this off quickly so youā€™re not spending too long reading this. Donā€™t want to make you late for our wedding after all.
I love you. I love you, Jung Hoseok. I love you, Hobi. I love you, I love you, I love you.
Lots and lots and lots of love, your soon to be wife <333333

Hey hey, the anon with the circles of people again.
I wanted to add that I've recently stumbled upon a virtual reality community which does a bunch of magic but their insistence on using Kabbalah is an extreme bother to me. I do not know if the creator of that space would be receptive to anything jewish people would criticize him about, and I myself don't know how to criticize that flippant amd irresponsible use of the Kabbalah there, without being in odds with the people there. I like the space for what it represents but hate the way they treat Kabbalah and what that implies for other opinions of theirs down the line.
I know you've been getting tons of asks like this but I really am at odds with myself with how to handle this situation that doesn't end up with me just removing myself entirely from that space.
You can look up vrmystery.school to see more and see the space to make up your opinion on it (it's on VR chat and you can access a private version of the place yourself, vr chat is free and can be accessed on your pc too)
P.S.: it really is the first and only of its kind out there which is partially why i'm so hesitant to bring it up
Hello again!
Unfortunately there might not be a lot you can do it's it's just you against them. You can open up discussions about what you've heard Jewish people say and pass along helpful resources, but you can't change people's minds if they aren't willing to listen. If you need a token Jew to flank in, you're welcome to point them in my direction.
I think it's good that you're willing to speak up about it and potentially be an ally in a space where we can't represent ourselves, or might need to dip for our own safety. That's the challenge of allyship, though, it's not comfortable. If you bring it up they could become hostile, or you might need to leave that space and start your own. (The future of that platform likely doesn't hinge on this one group being successful!) Maybe, if you're lucky, they'll actually be receptive to it.
I can't really offer much advice beyond "Yeah it sounds like their behavior sucks, confront them if you want to and be ready for the consequences or just leave and possibly create your own, less shitty space." Up to you to decide what's worth it.

Some, okay a lot, of pre-mid season (tri? season) finale thoughts.Ā  As if you actually asked for them, lol.
And no, I havenā€™t actually watched the last episode yet.Ā  Iā€™ve been putting it off all morning.Ā  For reasons.Ā  Reasons that I felt the inexplicable need to put on paper, er, screen.Ā Ā
If you care at all to read the purging of my fatigued TWD fangirl mind, please look beneath the cut.Ā  Fair warning.Ā  Itā€™s long so pull up a chair maybe, lol.Ā Ā
Iā€™ll admit it.Ā  The spoilers indicating a significant lack of Carol/Melissa content has dampened much of my enthusiasm and there wasnā€™t all that much to start with.Ā Ā
Let me tell you why--
The season, so far, has been woefully unbalanced in favor of the Reaper storyline and the Maggie/Negan conflict (which ties back to the Reaper storyline by the flimsiest of strings) and Iā€™m just not invested.Ā Ā
Why?Ā Ā
Well, itā€™s multifold.Ā Ā
#1 reason why?Ā  Having a third of the last season ever of TWD devoted to going insideĀ ā€œthe lionsā€™ denā€ of villains I have no emotional connection to or curiosity about is a big fat fail.Ā Ā
You might sayĀ ā€œbut thereā€™s the Daryl double agentā€ aspect and I sayĀ ā€œso fucking whatā€ because it was so poorly conceived and has felt like such a WTF set of fraying puppet strings for this plot Angela was apparently jonesing to tell from the GO, damn the torpedoes she had to know where inevitably coming her way.Ā Ā
Seriously.Ā  I had talked myself into accepting that which I could not change, citing Darylā€™s emotional brokenness after Rick.Ā  Convincing myself heā€™d lost his anchor to goodness and hope and fulfillment in his years of self-imposed exile from Carol and what was left of his family and to a certain extent?Ā  I can still by that explanation.Ā  But really.Ā  Itā€™s the Leah of it all.Ā Ā
Let me attempt to explain.Ā Ā
To do that, maybe I should detail how Iā€™ve always perceived Daryl.Ā Ā
Daryl, IMHO, began this journey with us and the rest of Team Family with a figurative fortress erected around his true, core self.Ā Ā
He was prickly.Ā  Defensive to any overtures of kindness because he inherently did not trust them.Ā  Loathe to form any real connection to anyone other than Merle, his blood.Ā Ā
Daryl balked at the possibility of emotional connection and flinched in learned fear from physical touch.Ā Ā
He did not recognize or accept affection or respect at face value because it was something rarely shown to him before.Ā Ā
Anybody else remember that childhood abuse book from Consumed?Ā  You know.Ā  One of those first times the showrunners/writers dumped a character nugget in our laps and left it to us to do all the backstory in our own imaginations so they didnā€™t have to enrich their own characters beyond the scratch and sniff, wham bam this is who they are work?Ā Ā
Anyway.Ā  We were left to extrapolate from that what most of us h ad already suspected--that Darylā€™s formative years were already a living hell before the ZA ever happened.Ā Ā
So he was standoffish.Ā  He didnā€™t form emotional connections lightly and physical intimacy was something light years out of his comfort zone.Ā Ā
Until Carol.Ā Ā
Darylā€™s defenses started to crumble from the very start with Carol because she piqued his interest.Ā  He looked at her, watched her withstand Edā€™s abuse, and recognized something of himself.Ā Ā
Against his will, Daryl started to care and when Carol lost the one good thing that had come out of her miserable life with Ed--Sophia--Darylā€™s core identity started to be revealed to us and probably?Ā  To himself after burying it so deep for so long.Ā Ā
Long story short?Ā  Daryl connected with Carol pretty quickly on a base level through the trauma of Sophiaā€™s loss.Ā Ā
The real connection, the emotional work it too to peel all those protective layers away took more like--like planting a flower from seed and tending it to help it survive and flourish.Ā Ā
Simply said?Ā  The work was put in and Daryl bloomed with Carolā€™s (and Team Familyā€™s) care.Ā  They all put in varying degrees of work but Carol planted the seed of hisĀ ā€œbelonging.ā€Ā Ā
And the thing about Daryl?Ā  Once he bloomed?Ā  He grew strong.Ā  He stretched toward the sun.Ā Ā
He and Carol essentially bloomed and fought their way toward the sunlight together.Ā Ā
And little by little, Daryl learned to accept the kindness, trust, and love he always deserved.Ā Ā
From that newly confident man emerged a Daryl not so fearful of forming connections and none have ever been more powerful than his connection to Carol.Ā Ā
Iā€™ll spare yaā€™ll the paragraphs of how Daryl and Carol gravitated toward each other like magnets no matter the means of separation.Ā Ā
Iā€™ll just spell it out like this:Ā  their bond supersedes all others, even Darylā€™s bond with Rick.Ā  And with Daryl only accepting affection from those he trusts implicitly, Carol and Daryl have been the only potentialĀ ā€œromanticā€ pairing that has ever fully made sense for his established character.Ā Ā
At least the character before Angela launched the grenade of Leah into the mix.Ā Ā
Leah was a fail from the start.Ā Ā
And you know what?Ā  Iā€™m thinking that was largely intended (for various reasons) but I still think they could have shown Daryl as receptive to having aĀ ā€œromanticā€ relationship to those willfully blind to the possibility that heā€™s actually been in aĀ ā€œromanticā€ relationship with Carol since Season 2.Ā  Never mind that Carol and Daryl havenā€™t (yet) crossed certain physical boundaries yet.Ā  Emotionally? They are already there even if neither is able to admit it out loud with the actual words yet.Ā  But I digress.Ā  The people that never wanted toĀ ā€œseeā€ Carol and Daryl asĀ ā€œromanticā€ because they couldnā€™t fathom Daryl as seeing Carol in that light had already deemed that Daryl just didnā€™t feel that way about her, that maybe he didnā€™t feel that way about anybody (if they couldnā€™t have their way and have him feel that way about their preferred choice for him, they preferred him alone), and Angela wanted to show them differently.Ā  To show them the light.Ā Ā
That said, if Angela was so hellbent on doing Leah?Ā  There were a multitude of better ways.Ā Ā
Here.Ā  Iā€™ll give you one of them.Ā Ā
Daryl isolates himself from his family after Rickā€™sĀ ā€œdeathā€ same as he did in Angelaā€™s version.Ā Ā
Carolā€™s been being pulled more and more to the Kingdom because Henryā€™s needing a mother figure is like catnip to her hurting natural-born, hurting Mamaā€™s heart.Ā  So Darylā€™s anchor to the man heā€™d matured into, the one with all these earned emotional attachments, is reeled back in, little by little, leaving him unmoored.Ā Ā
Dog literally runs into him just as before.Ā  It hardly makes sense given how young and floppy and uncoordinated puppies are and thus vulnerable to danger, but this is the least of things we need to worry about suspending disbelief for right?Ā  ;)
Dog and Daryl continue to have these run ins until Daryl decides to retrace the puppyā€™s clumsy trail and viola!Ā  He finds Leahā€™s cabin and Leah inside.Ā  She levels the same shotgun at him, they have a standoff, until---
Leah suddenly lowers the gun and incredulously says Darylā€™s name.Ā Ā
Thatā€™s right.Ā  One simple change and Daryl and Leah have an undefined past already.Ā Ā
Daryl doesnā€™t completely let his guard down because heā€™s Daryl, but he relaxes enough that we see he doesnā€™t immediately regard Leah as dangerious to his own well-being.Ā Ā
From that point on, instead of tying Daryl up and threatening him, we could have been told the story of how they knew each other from before.Ā Ā
My version goes a little something like this--
Daryl met Leah through Merle.Ā  Merle, in turn, met Leah through the military before he got discharged.Ā  He and Leah had an ongoingĀ ā€œI scratch your itch if you scratch mineā€ thing and Leah?Ā  Well, she always had a bit of a soft spot/interest in Daryl that Daryl never really returned.Ā Ā
The thing is, though?Ā  With losing the chosen brother that filled the hole left behind by his lost blood brother Merle and losing Carol to her chasing after a chance of a new family (because she feels Darylā€™s out of her reach too, our too blind and stupidly, silently in love idiots)?Ā  Daryl finds himself embracing the shared memories however minimal of that brief past and his grief and loneliness leave him receptive to Leahā€™s eventual advances in ways he never was before.Ā Ā
Weā€™re still given hints of their unfolding relationship and we still donā€™t like it, but it makes more sense for Daryl to cling to the past when he feels heā€™s lost his future.Ā Ā
Leah still gives her ultimatum (thereā€™s a reason she gravitated toward Merle in perhaps his most toxic state, sheā€™s more than a little fucked up too) and itā€™s not as much of a hard sell that Daryl might be pulled in Leahā€™s direction when he feels Carol is all but lost to him.Ā Ā
Hell.Ā  They could have even explicitly discussed Carol.Ā  But wait!Ā  Angela would have never allowed that because she doesnā€™t want to shatter all the crackship dreams in one fell swoop.Ā Ā
But the story from that point on could have continued just as it has and probably I still wouldnā€™t have liked it but I could have at least bought it somewhat and understood it.Ā Ā
Obviously, it didnā€™t.Ā
I donā€™t buy the Leah of it all.Ā  Angela built thatĀ ā€œrelationshipā€ with monopoly money and it shows.Ā Ā
Because I donā€™t buy Leah period.Ā  I donā€™t buy Daryl giving even giving a shit about trying to or feeling like thereā€™s a snowballā€™s chance to redeem her so Iā€™m not engaged whatsoever with this Daryl double agent story and him even givign her crumbs about his real family.Ā Ā
That part rings false.Ā Ā
So thatā€™s a big problem right there and we havenā€™t even gotten to the other part I donā€™t buy.Ā Ā
You know what else I donā€™t buy?Ā Ā
#2?Ā Ā
Why the hell are the Reapers so bloodthirsty for Maggieā€™s departure from this mortal coil?Ā Ā
Without giving better reasoning than theyā€™re just cray-cray, the entire faceplants and considering itā€™s taken up about 70% of 11Aā€™s focus?Ā  Iā€™m pissed.Ā Ā
Because, IMHO, they should go big or go home on this to give it any entertainment value because itā€™s all stale, recycled air if not.Ā Ā
Maggieā€™s been established as a much darker character this season.Ā  Which led me to believer the Reapers probably had a legit beef against her, but it seems Angela is reluctant to go all that way down the rabbit hole and doesnā€™t want to commit to what could be a more entertaining and potentially fascinating story than just Maggieā€™s in the right, the Reapers are just evil.Ā Ā
Maggie is right about Negan, IMHO, but sheā€™s also wrong in not listening to him when what heā€™s saying reeks of simple common sense.Ā  Ignoring sage advice makes her seem more like an angry toddler stamping her feet in defiance than the leader they are so bound and determined to tell us she is.Ā Ā
You know what?Ā  The window for me to give more than the half a fuck Iā€™m giving right now as they beat this dead horse to dust closed when Maggie decided letting Negan rot in the ASZ jail cell was enough and spared him when she finally had her best chance to end him once and for all.Ā Ā
Maybe if they stopped having the same damn conversation and they didnā€™t take up 20% of the screen time left after the boring Reapers/Leah shit, I would be less resentful but Iā€™m not and again, Iā€™ll tell you why.Ā Ā
BECAUSE.Ā  We are in the last season of the OG TWD ever and this show has chosen to waste screen time on stories nobody cares about to the exclusion of the ones weā€™re yearning for more of.Ā Ā
Like ASZ.Ā  Weā€™ve barely seen more than an hour of the eight hours devoted to Carol, Aaron, Rosita, Lydia, Judith, Kelly, Jerry and Co. in total.Ā  Especially since theyā€™ve been trying to establish the Commonwealth on the side, too.Ā Ā
I mean, I never really expected to dig the Commonwealth so my expectations for it were lower than low so theyā€™ve been exceeded at a miniscule level.Ā  But I expected and hoped for ASZ and those characters weā€™ve cared the most about to receive much more emphasis and the fact that they havenā€™t in this last season so far has been the biggest FAIL.Ā Ā
And okay.Ā  Selfishly, I want more Carol.Ā  Sheā€™s like salt.Ā  She makes almost everything go down better.Ā Ā
But really. Give me more of all the characters we actually care about, please.Ā  The Reapers and the offshoots from that story wheel arenā€™t it.Ā  I love Daryl but I hate this retread story for him.Ā  Leah is a weak point that pressed upon?Ā  Makes this weak ass arc collapse.Ā  Maggie and Negan are giving us nothing new.Ā  They are the definition of the word STALEMATE and thatā€™s not what you want or need on the finale season of a show.Ā Ā
Yes, I have enjoyed the majority of the episodes overall, but that was because the moments I loved I weighted more than the ones I didnā€™t and know they have the most impact on the show down the road.Ā Ā
Probably 11A will fare better when all is said and done and the show can be binged but standalone?Ā  Itā€™s been an overall disappointment and that saddens me more than I can say.Ā Ā
Anyway.Ā  Iā€™m going to stop rambling now and try to psyche myself up for episode 8.Ā  Iā€™ll be back with thoughts on it later, maybe.Ā Ā
Sorry for the word vomit, but I felt maybe I could in someway give voice to some of the feelings floating around out there and let you know that you are not alone.Ā Ā
Until later, lovelies.Ā Ā

My Version of FNAF Canon
(a.k.a. my attempt at cleaning up the FNAF timeline) FNAFā€™s canon is messy and confusing, and I personally think the story would be better if the series ended with FNAF3 like Scott had originally intended. So, aĀ  few days ago, I wrote up a revised version of the story and explained every detail so it is all easily understood.Ā Ā  You can read the revised story/timeline of events underneath the read more!Ā
Characters:
Henry Emily
Original Founder of Fazbear Entertainment
Friendly and approachable. A family man despite being a single parent. Harbors big aspirations and is determined to stick to them. Has a tendency to get in a little over his head; has so many ideas that they all tend to muddle together and become confusing. Despite this, he is very professional. A HARD worker.
William Afton
Co-founder of Fazbear Entertainment
Founder of Afton Robotics
Manipulative and controlling. Narcissistic; possibly a megalomaniac. Has a habit of taking advantage of others for personal gain. Incredibly fake in earnest, but good at pretending to be a genuine person. Bad temper. Highly intelligent and sly, which makes him appear rather charming to most people.
Timeline:
Early 1970s
Henry has an idea for a kid's pizza restaurant utilizing animatronics and arcade games as entertainment.
He employs an old friend of his, William Afton, as his business partner. He becomes the co-founder of the company Henry's creating.
Working together, Henry and William found Fazbear Entertainment and in-turn Afton Robotics.Ā
Henry and William create the restaurant's animatronics, Fredbear and Spring Bonnie, and open their first location, "Fredbear's Family Diner." While they both design the animatronics, William builds them.
Late 1970s
Restaurant is successful and groundbreaking
After a few years of being open, to make the restaurant more exciting, Henry and William design new animatronics to be displayed alongside Fredbear and Bonnie. These new animatronics are Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy (what would later become their withered variants)
With an added aura of confidence due to building these new and more technologically advanced animatronics, William wants to take the company in a direction Henry isn't fond of; William is trying to take control of the company too much for Henry's liking
Eventually Henry fires William
Fuming, William files a lawsuit on Fazbear Entertainment, claiming he is the rightful owner of the physical animatronics. Since he built them he believes he is entitled to their copyright
William loses the lawsuit because when he forfeited the animatronics over to Fazbear Entertainment, technically Henry became the owner of them
Because of being fired and the result of the lawsuit, William is left penniless and disgraced
William grows to resent Henry and the Fazbear Entertainment company because not only did the company ruin him, but he also he believes it's not fair he helped the company become successful only to be fired and kicked off the team
William wants to get revenge, so he vows to figure out a way to ruin the company's reputation while also getting "even" with Henry for dropping him as a business partner
William takes his revenge to the extreme when he decides to murder Henry's daughter, Charlotte, outside of Fredbear's Family Diner in an act of vindictiveness and self-importance
Charlotte possesses the Security Puppet, binding her spirit to all future versions of the Puppet as well
Henry is devastated and the company takes a massive blow when the public finds out Fredbear's Family Diner is now linked to a child's murder
Henry closes Fredbear's down until further notice due to his grief and the negative reception from the public
Meanwhile, William gets away with his crime, no one even suspecting him since he dropped off the public radar after the lawsuit
Mid-Late 1980s (1985-1987) (FNAF 2)
Henry is being dogged by investors of Fazbear Entertainment to rekindle the restaurantĀ
Feeling backed into a corner, Henry agrees to make a new version of Fredbear's Family Diner, which he renames "Freddy Fazbear's Pizza."Ā
Henry makes new animatronics for the restaurant himself. He dubs these the "Toy" animatronics. Toy Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy (+ a new version of The Puppet, "The Marionette")Ā
Henry equips these new animatronics with special facial scanners to detect potential criminals in the restaurant. The animatronics identify these criminals through a database. Henry is determined to have this restaurant be safer than his last attempt.Ā
Note: This restaurant is most likely when the company began using the spring lock suits. Therefore, the safe rooms for bleeding out are located in THIS location specifically. This may have been a suggestion and action from investors, as I can't see Henry making this reckless idea up.Ā
The restaurant opens to mixed reception. This new restaurant is in a different city than Fredbear's. Henry made this decision mostly to help his mental health.
Eventually, Freddy Fazbear's Pizza becomes just as popular, if not more so, than Fredbear's Family Diner. Kids ADORE adore the restaurant for the characters, games, and prizes, and adults can appreciate the groundbreaking technology that goes into the animatronics.
Despite still being the owner of Fazbear Entertainment, Henry attempts to distance himself from holding a strong management role. He's still traumatized by the brutal death of his daughter.
William, noticing that Fazbear Entertainment is becoming successful again even after the crime he committed, becomes enraged.Ā
Still doing poorly mentally and financially because of his termination from the company, William realizes that in order to truly tarnish the reputation of Fazbear Entertainment for good, he's going to have to hatch a new plan (William is truly a vindictive bastard)
Note: William tries so hard to ruin the company because not only did it put him out financially, which essentially ruined his life, but it wronged him personally, and since he's so narcissistic he believes people shouldn't be able to get away with doing him wrong. This is most likely not his first experience with breaking the law/doing something truly horrible.
Under the alias 'Fritz Smith' William applies for a job at the new location, landing a position as a day-worker and part-time night guard
William changes his appearance slightly just in case anyone recognizes him from Fredbear's
Considering the fact Henry is trying to distance himself from the new restaurant, he doesn't notice William (posing as a different person) is now working at Freddy's
Note: The animatronics begin to act strangely toward the staff of the restaurant after William gets a job there because Charlotte (inside The Marionette) can sense that an evil presence is within the building now. Therefore, the animatronics start to act aggressively toward all adult figures (considering Charlotte mostly remembers that the murderer is an adult.)Ā
For a while, William works a normal job at the restaurant, getting close to the patrons and other staff members. He takes this time to study the inner workings of the company.
He's seen as a slightly odd, but generally well-meaning individual (and a pretty good worker too!)
After about a year or so William finally puts his plan into motion, using one of the old animatronic suits to lure five children into the backroom and murder them, just as he had done to Charlotte (maybe he does this on a day he's supposed to have off in order to have an alibi. Takes the day off and then sneaks into work anyway)
He finds great satisfaction in this and ends up having quite a bit of fun committing the crime. It reminds him of the catharsis he felt back when he murdered Charlotte.
(As an added bonus šŸ™‚) William takes each corpse and shoves them into spare animatronic suits in the backroom closet for someone to discover later. He then cleans himself up and promptly flees the scene of the crime, lying in wait for what will happen next.
Charlotte's spirit, now residing inside of The Marionette, gives life to the dead children by allowing them to possess the animatronic they were each stuffed into. This permanently binds their souls to any and all past and future versions of that character. (So technically each child is possessing EVERY iteration of their respectful animatronic. Ex: The child stuffed inside of Freddy is haunting Fredbear, Withered Freddy, Toy Freddy, Regular Freddy, Etc.)
Note: The childrens' bodies were most likely stuffed inside the Withered animatronics. William probably figured it would take people a bit to check those specific models, which would give him enough time to prepare for the fallout that would occur when they were found.
With the disappearance of five children at the restaurant, an investigation is launched. The staff plans to have the restaurant closed for only a few days so the police can conduct it.
As expected, the corpses of the children are found during the investigation and the restaurant is promptly closed
After being cleaned out, the restaurant holds one final birthday party before shutting down to allow for further investigation into the crime
With these five murders, the animatronics are sent into a frenzy, acting more aggressive than ever and generally not working right
During the last birthday party, Jeremy Fitzgerald, the night guard that was instructed to work the dayshift, is attacked by one of the animatronics, resulting in the "Bite of '87". He survives, but with the loss of his frontal lobe he loses cognitive abilities and all motor skills.Ā
Note: You may ask "Why'd Fazbear Entertainment agree to still do the birthday party even though they literally just found five childrens' corpses in the building?" Money, duh. The managers don't want to miss out on a sale, and they CERTAINLY don't want to have to refund parents for the party.
This is the final nail in the coffin for the restaurant, so it's completely shut down, the future of the company unknown.
The murders of the five children and the Bite of '87 completely tank the reputation of the restaurant, and the tragedy is all over the news.
Henry is left in utter disbelief and turmoil after the incident. Unable to deal with everything, he makes the decision to sell Fazbear Entertainment, completely cutting ties with the company.
Meanwhile, William sits back, satisfied with the fact that he was successfully able to achieve what he set out to do.
Early 1990s (1993?) (FNAF 1)
The Fazbear Entertainment company is in limbo for a while after the incidents. The FNAF2 location is left to rot.
The investigations into the murders of the five children culminated in the wrongful arrest and detainment of another Freddy's employee. Therefore, William has remained innocent.
However, as the years have passed, William has begun to be haunted by the spirits of the five children.
He decides that in order to get *them to stop bothering him, he'll break into the rotting Freddy's location and completely dismantle the animatronics, effectively destroying their vessels and hopefully causing the spirits to be destroyed along with them.
*This doesn't necessarily have to be the actual spirits of the children. It could also be an inkling of William's conscious seeping through and torturing him about the crimes he committed.Ā
William does this and during the dismantling process is ambushed by the five spirits, scaring him into the safe room and causing him to hide in an abandoned Spring Bonnie costume lying on the ground.
This is where the spring locks release and kill him inside the suit, as seen in the FNAF3 mini games.Ā
Now that William is finally dead, the spirits believe they can pass on, but what they aren't aware of is that being killed in the Spring Bonnie suit has now fused William's spirit with it. Therefore, he is not truly dead.Ā
Mid-Late 1990s (FNAF 1)
The people that purchased the Fazbear Entertainment company from Henry decided to once again try and revitalize the company, still seeing great potential in it despite the tragedies that took place. (They want their money!)
They decide to turn the restaurant into more of a chain.
They salvage some parts from the old FNAF2 location, board up the safe rooms inside the building, and use the parts they find to remake the animatronic characters.Ā
(Q: Why do they board up the safe rooms?Ā
A: Considering these people technically still own the old FNAF2 building, I would imagine they would like to keep it around for potential other locations in the future. Therefore, they don't want anyone easily breaking into the building and screwing things up, so they just board up any and all entrances, doorways, etc.Ā
Q: Why did they decide to do this now? Why not earlier? The building was just sitting there, so why hadn't they boarded it up sooner?
A: Up until this point the people that own Fazbear Entertainment now weren't planning on doing ANYTHING with these old locations. They had no plans, so why would they need to make sure that one of the old locations doesn't get vandalized? They only start caring now because the building is finally a potential way to make a profit.)
These characters are cheaply made and look like a significant downgrade from the Toy animatronics (considering they weren't made by William or Henry)Ā
Most of everything in the new restaurant is dingier and cheaper than the past two locations because the new owners of the company care more about money than quality, unlike Henry.
Since William's spirit lives on inside the Spring Bonnie suit, the children's souls are unable to pass on, so even these new animatronics continue to act strangely and attempt to attack the night guard.Ā
This continues until this new location is shut down as well for health violations. The place is a mess, the pizza is nasty, and families are complaining that the animatronic characters are glitchy, smell awful, and seem to be leaking "what appears to be blood and mucus."Ā
~2017 (FNAF 3)
Far in the future, the Fazbear's Fright horror attraction is made to capitalize on the infamous Freddy Fazbear's Pizza "rumors"
William, now possessing Spring Bonnie, is found by Fazbear's Fright while they scavenge through the old FNAF1 location
He is placed into the horror attraction after he is salvaged.Ā
Influenced by his remaining bitterness toward anything Fazbear Entertainment related, plus the animalistic nature he processes while inhabiting Springtrap, he attempts to attack and kill the night guard of Fazbear's Fright
After a week, the Fazbear's Fright building catches fire and burns down. Springtrap burns with the building and, with his vessel destroyed, William's spirit is sent to Hell. It's currently debated on whether or not the fire was caused by an outside party, or by the faulty wiring and ventilation in the old building.Ā
Note: It's quite possible Henry found out about the horror attraction and burnt the building down himself, attempting to end all things related to the seemingly cursed franchise once and for all. This might have been an act of catharsis for him, almost like he's finally letting go of the past.
With William officially gone, the spirits of the six kids he murdered can properly pass on.Ā

What would Great Albums be, if not for defenses of albums lots of people hate? SPKā€™s Machine Age Voodoo is, of course, one of those albums, being the attempt of a noisy, drony early industrial group to make synthy disco magic. Did they succeed? Well, maybe not--but at least itā€™s interesting. Find out more by watching the video, or checking out the transcript under the break!
Welcome to Passionate Reply, and welcome to Great Albums! This time, I will be once again be coming to the defence of an album thatā€™s been very divisive: Machine Age Voodoo by SPK, first released in 1984. Earlier in the 1980s, SPK had distinguished themselves as one of the most prominent figures of the nascent ā€œnoise musicā€ movement, alongside acts like NON and Throbbing Gristle. Just two years before Machine Age Voodoo, they released their arguable magnum opus: Leichenschrei, an album that eschewed a traditional tracklisting, featured the mutilated visage of a victim of napalm burns on its cover, and sounded something like this:
Music: ā€œSeite ((Klono))ā€ / ā€œNapalm (Terminal Patient)ā€
With their follow-up to Leichenschrei, SPK would take their sound in a very different direction. They abandoned the harsh, buzzing textures and nauseous, whirring drones of their earlier work, and set out in a remarkably more pop direction. While Machine Age Voodoo features verses and choruses, brighter synth textures, and winsome slap basslines, it still maintains a certain ā€œindustrialā€ identity, tying it into the same overarching web of related styles that SPKā€™s earlier work fell under. This album reminds me a bit of Depeche Modeā€™s mid-80s output, such as Some Great Reward, in its incorporation of both synth-pop structures as well as some accents of mechanistic clangs and bangs. Depeche Mode and SPK were, of course, passing by one another after coming from opposite directions on this spectrum, but the end results remain comparable.
Music: ā€œJunk Funkā€ / ā€œMachine Age Voodooā€
Listening to the albumā€™s stomping opener, titled ā€œJunk Funkā€ on most releases but made into the title track for the US market, Iā€™m struck by just how upbeat of a track it is. Where many industrial acts are keen to portray modern labour as a punishing, soul-sucking, miserable endeavour, ā€œJunk Funkā€ seems to make it into something of a party. Given that even Depeche Mode were penning tracks like ā€œEverything Countsā€ with a dour outlook on capitalism, the seemingly playful aura surrounding this single really sets it apart--though not necessarily in a good way. As I mentioned earlier, *Machine Age Voodoo* has consistently been panned by fans of the groupā€™s more aggressive earlier work, and I think the albumā€™s affinities with light-hearted, and perhaps even silly, post-disco pop make it all the more easy to write off as ridiculous and asinine. But much like simply being in a style you donā€™t care for isnā€™t a reason to lambaste a work of art, simply being lighter in tone is no reason to reject something. Not all great art needs to be stone-serious, after all! While Machine Age Voodoo may not be a continuation of the classic SPK sound, I think itā€™s an album that has plenty of appeal for fans of lighter synth-pop, and one that I wish had managed to achieve a bit more renown among those who might be a bit more receptive to its style.
Naturally, the title of the album and the themes of its sometime title track invite us to consider the role that appropriation of ā€œprimitiveā€ themes has to play. Ever since industrialization and colonialism began to create large separations between the lifestyles of ā€œthe West and the rest,ā€ Western artists from Picasso to Gauguin have found themselves fascinated by so-called ā€œprimitiveā€ ways of life, found among communities of colour whom they believed to live closer to the natural or archaic state of humankind, uncorrupted by capitalism. But followers of the religion sometimes known as ā€œVoodooā€ are living in the modern world as much as anyone else is, and the use of their faith as a symbol of barbarism or the unrestrained id here is presumptuous at best, and bigoted at worst--particularly given the reference to ā€œfunk,ā€ a music style that, like Voodoo, is strongly associated with Black culture. The love for things ā€œprimitiveā€ has served an important cultural role in the West, offering an apparent alternative to the crushing death spiral of capitalism, and serving as an outlet for questioning the assumed status quo and the truth of human nature--but at the same time, I think we can fairly criticize it for offering a stereotyped and tokenized view of cultures outside of the West. Machine Age Voodoo offers another, very different, perspective on the Other on its second track, ā€œWith Love From China.ā€
Music: ā€œWith Love From Chinaā€
Compared to ā€œJunk Funk,ā€ ā€œWith Love From Chinaā€ is distinguished as one of the albumā€™s more plaintive and less dancefloor-oriented tracks, and, in contrast to ā€œJunk Funkā€ā€™s joyful embrace of ā€œhigh technology hoodoo,ā€ ā€œWith Love From Chinaā€ portrays the titular Communist power as something quite sinister. While a simple read of the lyrics suggests that it may be a triumphant hymn to the state, the trackā€™s plodding, dirgelike melody makes it hang like an ominous cloud instead. Arguably the most successful state to be built upon Marxist ideals, China is a prominent feature of lots of early 80s synth-pop, where it and other Communist states saw varying portrayals as anywhere from dystopian to utopian. Like the appropriation of ā€œvoodooā€ earlier, the dread romanticism applied to China by SPK on this track says more about them than it does about China itself. I think both tracks, taken together, paint a picture of a sort of ā€œanywhere but hereā€ ideology, defined less by any strong feelings for these particular cultures, and more by a desire for an escape to the exotic, and an abandonment of all that is sick about the West. Overall, though, ā€œWith Love From Chinaā€ isnā€™t necessarily a fair representation of the average track on Machine Age Voodoo, as the album consists mostly of higher-energy tracks, like ā€œMetal Dance.ā€
Music: ā€œMetal Danceā€
Perhaps the track most clearly aimed at nightclub rotation, ā€œMetal Danceā€ feels like a logical choice for the albumā€™s first single. Less of a pop tune and more of a floorfiller, ā€œMetal Danceā€ still hums with industrial touches, propelled by clunking metallic percussion and chant-like shouts that prefigure the synthesis of machine music and club fare that EBM acts like Nitzer Ebb would achieve later in the 1980s. With its succinct title and a compelling hook that implores us to ā€œsynthesize our dreams away,ā€ ā€œMetal Danceā€ almost feels like a love letter to the sheer concept of electronic music for dancing to--a consummate paean to the discotheque, even if it comes from what may seem like an unlikely, and perhaps dishonest, source. A similar embrace of dance music qua dance music is found on ā€œHigh Tension.ā€
Music: ā€œHigh Tensionā€
If ā€œMetal Danceā€ sounds like a preview of later industrial dance genres like EBM, then ā€œHigh Tensionā€ feels like a throwback to the first attempts to ā€œsynthesizeā€ an electronic disco, with its dense, complex production style, prominent bass, and lyrics that promote ā€œdanc[ing] ā€˜til you dropā€ as a response to ā€œbad times.ā€ Despite its compelling use of a well-textured vocoder, ā€œHigh Tensionā€ veers away from the worship of the machine that was central to ā€œMetal Dance,ā€ and its straightforward celebration of dancing itself makes it feel like the most likely genuine crossover hit on the album--not that it really had any. Itā€™s also worth noting that the trackā€™s bridge contains an early reference to ā€œhip-hop,ā€ back when artists like Man Parrish were freely using the term to describe club-friendly electro that didnā€™t necessarily include rapping. Times have changed, of course, but I think ā€œHigh Tensionā€ fits right in with other works in that style--even if, again, it comes from a group that nobody would have expected to make music like this!
On the cover of Machine Age Voodoo, we see a fantasy cityscape, defined by a massive tower crowned with the bandā€™s name accompanied by a Communist-inspired red star. Itā€™s as firmly removed from the vile and shocking imagery of Leichenschrei as the music contained within. But, just as the music has retained some degree of industrial sentiments, the cover is not without its own sense of subversion--it is, after all, apparently enshrining the ostensibly dangerous, foreign ideology of Communism!
Itā€™s tempting to compare this image to the futuristic imagery of Fritz Langā€™s classic silent film, Metropolis, particularly given that thereā€™s also a track on the album that shares that title. But I think that the visual style employed here, with its blocky, cubistic rendering of form and lively use of diagonals to enrich its composition, is perhaps more reminiscent of the work of the Russian avant-garde of the 1910s. Even before the Russian Revolution, pioneering abstract artists, like the ā€œRayonistā€ Natalia Goncharova, were looking towards the exciting potential of the future, and making art that celebrated the beauty of machines in motion. The early abstraction of painters like Goncharova would go on to influence the abstract art associated with the early days of the Soviet Union, which makes it a particularly fitting affinity given the themes of Machine Age Voodoo.
After Machine Age Voodoo, SPK never returned to making more melodic music--perhaps unsurprisingly, given the albumā€™s simultaneous failure to achieve crossover success, or retain the interest of their existing fanbase. They returned in 1986 with Zamia Lehmanni: Songs of Byzantine Flowers, an album of dark ambient music that avoided slavishly copying earlier works like Leichenschrei, while still feeling like a worthy continuation of the spirit in which they had begun their career.
Music: ā€œInvocation to Secular Heresiesā€
My favourite track on Machine Age Voodoo is ā€œSeduction,ā€ which is easy to overlook as it actually only appeared on the US release of the album. ā€œSeductionā€ is striking for its blatant, wantonly sexual lyricism, which, when combined with SPK vocalist Sinan Leongā€™s competently sultry vocal style, recalls the best work of the experimental disco outfit Gina X Performance. And much like Gina X Performance, thereā€™s a bit of subversively queer gender-bending to be had here, as a male backing vocalist repeats Leongā€™s line, ā€œyou call yourself a man?ā€ I think that may be unintentional, a sort of happy accident, but I love it nonetheless. Thatā€™s all I have for today--thanks for listening!

Note
I'll always remember Devin Grayson as the woman who wrote Nightwing getting raped by a supervillain and then tried to pass it off as "wasn't rape, just nonconsensual"...which is LITERALLY THE DEFINITION OF RAPE, YOU HACK!
MSL: Male rape is a topic rarely touched on in comics. Why is it suited to bring it into Nightwing?
DEVIN GRAYSON: For the record, Iā€™ve never used the word ā€œrape,ā€ I just said it was nonconsensual (I know, arenā€™t writers frustrating? *smiles*) [x]Ā
Yeah there is no other word for what happened in Nightwing #93 other than rape...I canā€™t imagine why she would say otherwise. She did technically apologize, but that was ten or so years later. So she eventually, finally did come out and just admit what everyone already knew, but she was still way too late to actually fix any of the damage she caused with how she completely mishandled things. I also donā€™t think her little apology begins to cover all the issues I have with her.Ā
Devinā€™s characterization of Dick is just so, so freaking twisted to me. Really, I donā€™t think there is a Nightwing writer I despise more than Devin Grayson. The interviews Iā€™ve read from her give me the creeps:
DG: The way I think about him [Dick], he likes everyone, heā€™s sort of a contact junkie - just this incredibly physical (and attractive) person who lives wholly in the corporeal plane and responds with - processes things in - his body before his head or heart. I imagine that he can be hypnotized by a touch the way other people can be stopped dead in their tracks by the sight of money or the promise of true love. I think he likes kicking and kissing in almost equal measure - except kissing edges out ahead because you can do it for longer and it leads to nicer things. [x]
Yeah thatā€™s fucking unsettling. This is Devin being gross and projecting her sexual fantasyā€™s onto Dick. And she very much invented this extreme view of Dick as obsessively physical. Pre-52 Dick was always written as a master strategist, an unparalleled leader, one of the best detectives in the world, outside of Devinā€™s writing. Her fantasy version of Dick doesnā€™t mesh with that...Dick wouldnā€™t be capable leader if heā€™s ā€œthinking with his bodyā€ (whatever that means) all the time. Heā€™s survived this long because heā€™s intelligent and logical. Frankly, Devinā€™s take on things doesnā€™t even make any freaking sense. But it gets worse:Ā
DDG: Iā€™m writing a novel for WB right now that heā€™s in and I have one scene where Batman has to stop a fight before it gets out of control, and most of the people he can just yell or glare at, but with Dick, he just stands really close behind him and Dick freezes. Thatā€™s not supposed to be a sexual thing (though it is kinda hot! ::laughs::), itā€™s an understanding on Bruceā€™s part that his physical proximity will speak just as quickly and loudly to Dick as his voice, maybe even be processed faster.
What the actual fuck. Youā€™ve probably guessed it based on how that little scenario played out.Ā Devin ships Dick with Bruce.Ā
DG: And now think about being a very physical and naturally gregarious and loving person and growing up with someone like Bruce. Then add in the confusion about his status - a ā€œwardā€ is something you stop being the minute you turn eighteen. Having already lost his parents and then hurling into adolescence at the speed he did...in my personal version of the story, he develops sexual desire and social anxiety about the future at the same time, and this leads to tremendous confusion, on his part, about his role in Bruceā€™s life. He canā€™t be a ward forever, in the back of his head he knows he wonā€™t be Robin forever...what is he to this man who is at once his best friend and personal savior, personal god? ā€œSonā€ is what they eventually settle on, but I think when Dick was in his late teens, the idea of ā€œloverā€ must have run through his mind (which means, really, as weā€™ve already discussed, it ran through his body).
Wild that Dick is usually written as incredibly intelligent and emotionally cognizant (was able to puzzle out Damianā€™s complex motivations and needs when no one else in Damianā€™s life could for example) and yet Devin thinks heā€™s not able to sort out that heā€™s not supposed to make sexual advances towards his father. And by wild I mean stupid as fuck. And, just fyi, Devin goes with the version of events where Bruce took Dick in when he was eight years old! So heā€™s pretty fucking young when this is all happening! Just when you thought it couldnā€™t get more disgusting.Ā
Eventually, much later, Dick gets distracted by other relationships and is able to ease up enough on Bruce for Bruce to relax into his own comfort-level of kindness and affection again (once the threat of sexuality has been removed) and they carry on more or less unharmed. But the relationship remains incredibly powerful and intense for Dick, who ends up feeling apologetic, rejected, and confused on top of all the other issues we already know exist between the two of them. Dick responds to Bruce - or really I should say Batman, since thatā€™s who his relationship is with - on every single level.
So, according to Devin, Dick views Bruce as hisĀ ā€œpersonal godā€ and is incredibly submissive to and possessive of him. Thatā€™s why Devinā€™s writing is littered with scenes like this:Ā
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gotham Knights #17
Where Dick acts incredibly awkward and ā€œapologeticā€ about dating Barbara, because of how he previously made sexual advances towards Bruce in Devinā€™s fantasy world. Also with Devin, Dick spends a lot of his time stuttering every time Bruce is in the room, even though heā€™s usually a smooth talker, very chatty, and thatā€™s because of the supposed ā€œintensityā€ of Bruce and Dickā€™s relationship. And then there are scenes like this:Ā
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gotham Knights #18
Where Dick uncharacteristically and disproportionately loses his cool at the slightest insinuation against Bruce and is reduced to an angry hot head. Dick has been noted to be incredibly level headed; heā€™s also famous for being a mediator among the hero community...this behavior is a complete departure from the way he would normally act under other writers. Dickā€™s also been one to level plenty of criticisms towards Bruce himself. This sudden personality change where Dick thinks Bruce can do no wrong, where no one can criticize Bruce in Dickā€™s presence without him absolutely blowing up, where he suddenly canā€™t control his emotions over the littlest things...it really exists primarily in Devinā€™s writing. Itā€™s incredibly OOC behavior and itā€™s rooted in Devinā€™s sexual fantasies frankly.Ā
Devinā€™s writing is also where Dick, despite being incredibly dedicated and monogamous in all of his previous relationships, suddenly became a womanizer. Literally, everyone was written as wanting to get into Dickā€™s pants: Rose Wilson was reduced to a giddy teenager because of Dick, random women in the streets would comment on how cute Nightwing was, aĀ mob bossā€™s daughter who was only 15 years oldĀ was obsessed with Dick and made advances, Dick had a one night stand with Huntress because she reminded him of Bruce, Bruce called DickĀ ā€œHunk Wonder,ā€ Dick undressed in front of fuckingĀ DeathstrokeĀ (and there was a newspaper with ā€œRichard Wilsonā€ on it as a sly little wink towards the audience), psycho vigilante Tarantula is obsessed with Dick to the point of raping him,Ā the list goes on. If you want more samplings of how freaking disgusting and sex-obsessed Devin was when it came to Dick, look no further than her gross Inheritance book, where she ships Dick with everyone from Green Arrow to Aquaman (here are some quotes if youā€™re a masochist). And since DickĀ ā€œthinks with his bodyā€ or whatever, Devinā€™d write him as receptive (or very oblivious) when it comes to this attention.Ā
Tumblr media
Gotham Knights #10
Tumblr media
Nightwing (1996) #107
Another thing that made me extremely uncomfortable is how Devin would always have strangers and villains, especially older men--people who Dick very much did not know and wouldnā€™t appreciate being in his personal space--be all grabby with him. Please leave him alone.Ā
Tumblr media
Nightwing and Huntress #2
There Dick is, ā€œhypnotizedā€ in place by Huntressā€™s touch. Kill me. It is also especially messed up that Devin suddenly turned Dick into some sexual, warm-blooded hot head at the same time as she decided to introduce him as Romani.Ā
Q: How could him being Romani be used to inform his characterization?
It reinforces his ā€œothernessā€ where Bruce is concerned in what I think is a useful, interesting way...It also presents the opportunity for there to be a slight chip on his shoulder, which maybe speaks to his scrappiness. It also maybe gives him a slightly deeper way to relate to someone like Helena--someone who is white but other--and gives the people who love (or lust after) him a potential cultural excuse for feeling as bewitched as they sometimes do. I also just love the idea of Bruce occasionally calling him ā€œhot bloodedā€ just to mess with him, because Dick would of course deny being so in an extremely hot-blooded manner. [x]
Her feeding into the fetishizing of biracial individuals is just disgusting and wrong.Ā If thereā€™s a racist stereotype available Devin really goes out of her way to make sure she includes it in her writing huh.Ā
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gotham Knights #20
And Bruce being a racist jerk is not charming Devin, itā€™s terrible. Barbara used slurs also, and was very dismissive of Dickā€™s reaction to Bruceā€™s actions...that was also horrible. Itā€™s awful that Dickā€™s own family would apparently treat him this way. Obviously, Dick isnā€™t the only one that Devin would write out of character.Ā
Itā€™s all just so messed up to me, I canā€™t stand it. When I first read her comics, even when it wasnā€™t blatant like above, I would feel something subtly off...and once I read her interviews I canā€™t help but notice these horrible underlying insinuations in all of her work, in so many seemingly ā€œinnocentā€ scenes. There are a lot of big things sheā€™s known for (her horrible treatment of Dickā€™s Romani heritage and his rape for example) but all these subtle, insidious little details that people donā€™t even really register...they are equally frustrating to me. Seeing sects of the fandom pick up these details (like, the idea that Dick doesnā€™t understand personal boundaries, the idea that heā€™s a hot head, the idea that heā€™s a womanizer, etc.) when I know a lot of it stems nearly solely from Devinā€™s crappy characterization and writing of Dick...itā€™s hard.Ā
Q: Further to that, if Dick is gay, what kind of guy is his type?
DG: ...Type isnā€™t as important as passion and opportunity. Because of his psycho-sexual makeup, the other key factor would be a sense that he means something to that other man, that his ā€œsurrenderā€ is making that man happy, allowing him to bring pleasure to someone (as he was never allowed to do for Bruce). Thereā€™s also a sense, if I may be so bold, of needing to be ā€œcaughtā€ and ā€œheld downā€ - this going back to the trauma of losing his parents...being strong and passionate and heroic and virile and loving with a woman is fantastic, he lives for that. But he lost both parents. There is also a part of him that longs to be pinned down and loved a little bit savagely and hurt just enough to reassure him that heā€™s alive. Man, Iā€™m totally gonna get fired when this comes out....
Literally makes me want to barf. That is supposed to be a professional, official writer at DC. Could go on forever.Ā

I was going to save this until tomorrow morning, but then I remembered I have stuff to do in the morning and Iā€™ll be traveling again, soooo gonna finally get this fic officially rolling tonight.
*Originally I was going to call this ficĀ ā€˜The Romancing of Ruby Rose,ā€™ but I didnā€™t really like how it just focused on Ruby when itā€™s a Bright Eyes OT3 fic, so I decided to make a last minute change.
*this fic is based off a set of three asks sent to me by @misstrashchan, the first being:
Oscar's learnt how to pick up on Ruby's emotions better than most in a short time. So he doesn't fail to notice how hard Ruby- and it appears Penny as well- are crushing on one another. He tries to encourage Ruby to ask Penny on a date, but for some reason, they keep bringing him along.
and now, the moment youā€™ve all been waiting for!
.
How to Grow a Romance in 3 Easy Steps
Step 1: Planting Rose Seeds in the Garden
I fell in love with her the moment I saw her silver eyes.
A shiver runs up Oscarā€™s spine. Ā He stares at the last line of the story, as if the intensity of his gaze will make it change to something else entirely. Ā His stomach twists uncomfortably into knots. Ā Oscar can imagine, far too easily, what it feels like to fall in love with a silver-eyed person. Ā The way oneā€™s heart skips a beat. Ā The rush of heady emotions.
Heā€™d chosen to read this book of fairytales to forget about his problems for an hour or two (and maybe find a deeper understanding of Ozpin along the way, since it was Oz who collected the stories for the book once upon a time). Ā Not to be reminded of his woes.
Oscar sighs. Ā He closes the book with a light thump, tosses it to the side, lies on his back, and stares at the ceiling. Ā When they were first getting settled, Jaune had given him the choice of top or bottom bunk in their Atlas dorm room. Ā Oscar chose the top. Ā It gave him a little more privacy, distance, from his teammates. Ā Oscar likes Jaune, Nora, and Ren, theyā€™ve become his friends, but they can be a bit much at times too.
There are times, like now, where Oscar enjoys being able to think without being asked what heā€™s thinking about. Ā Heā€™s not quite sure how that conversation would go, and heā€™s not eager to find out. Ā There are far more important things they need to focus on than something as insignificant as a puppyish crush. Ā He never even considered romance an option before leaving his auntā€™s farm. Ā He shouldnā€™t now.
Because, because it doesnā€™t matter how he feels about Ruby. Ā Not in the slightest. Ā Ruby doesnā€™t feel the same way about him. Ā He doesnā€™t make her heart race. Ā She doesnā€™t smile softly, tenderly at him. Ā Not like she does atā€¦
Oscar rolls over and groans into his pillow. Ā It would be much easier to endure if it were literally anyone else who managed to gain Rubyā€™s affection. Ā Literally. Ā Anyone. Ā Else. Ā ANYONE.
Other than Penny Polendina.
Oscar hadnā€™t known her before, at Beacon, like everyone else had. Ā After talking to them, he found out Jaune, Nora, and Ren hadnā€™t known Penny too well either back then. Ā Sheā€™d been closer to Team RWBY, and especially Ruby. Ā Oscar had wondered, after witnessing how Penny and Ruby just looked at each other, if thereā€™d been something more between them back at Beacon. Ā Heā€™d asked. Ā His three teammates looked between themselves and admitted they didnā€™t actually know.
Although JNPR and RWBY were close in their academy days, some things still didnā€™t leave their respective teams, Jaune explained. Ā It wasnā€™t until after the Fall that theyā€™d learned that Ruby had known Pennyā€™s true nature for quite some time before the tragedy in the arena, for instance. Ā They kept their own secrets too. Ā Ren and Nora had revealed their past to Jaune, and their late teammate, Pyrrha, but not to RWBY.
(Pyrrha Nikos, for the record, remains an entirely separate topic Oscar isnā€™t sure how to think about. Ā He knows none of his friends consider him her replacement on Team JNPR. Ā Even though his name technically has a ā€˜Pā€™ in it and Ironwood was more than willing to register him as the new fourth member of JNPR in Atlasā€™s databases, theyā€™d instead insisted on calling themselves ORNJ. Ā It causes some confusion since Jaune is still the team leader, but, for them, it works. Ā Both to represent who they are now and keep the memory of who they were then in tact.)
Back to the point, if there were anyone (outside of Ruby), to choose to have a crush on, Oscar completely understands why Penny would be that choice. Ā Sheā€™s like no one else heā€™s ever met, and not just because of the robot thing. Ā Okay, yeah, the fact she can fly is pretty cool. Ā But, more than that, sheā€™s sweet. Ā Sheā€™s one of the most kind-hearted souls heā€™s ever met. Ā
Most importantly, Penny doesnā€™t see Oscar as just the boy whoā€™d tagged along with her actual friends because their old headmaster had taken up residence in his head. Ā She sees him as a potential new friend in his own right. Ā Sheā€™s gone out of her way to make him feel welcome in Atlas. Ā She didnā€™t really have to do that. Ā Especially not when sheā€™s so busy herself being Protector of an entire city.
It makes it impossible to dislike her. Ā And really, itā€™s flat out unfair to dislike someone just because the person you happen to have a crush on has a crush on them anyway.
A part of Oscar wishes he did dislike Penny. Ā That part of him is convinced that, if he were just to channel all his heartbreak over not being the one to catch Rubyā€™s eye into negative emotions for her, it would be easier to cope. Ā Every other part of him knows it wouldnā€™t be. Ā Not truly. Ā Not in any way that counts.
Oscarā€™s scroll vibrates. Ā He sighs to himself, but reaches over to pick it up to read whatever message has been sent to him.
Text from Ruby Rose:
Hey Oscar, later me and Penny are gonna to go to that arcade that you told me FNKI told you to check out, wanna come?
Oscar stares at the text as one minute passes by, then another, and a third after that. Ā Yes, heā€™d told Ruby about the arcade. Ā Team FNKI had told his team about it after one of their training bouts. Ā It was apparently one of FNKIā€™s favorite places to unwind and destress. Ā Heā€™d told Ruby about it because he knew how much she enjoyed video games.
(He figured it could probably be a great place for some kind of first date between her and Penny, as well. Ā At least, thatā€™s where Oscar would have taken Ruby if heā€™d ever been able to ask her out.)
(Look, if Oscar is never going to get his chance to admit his true feelings, the least the two of them could do is just go out with each other already. Ā Ruby and Penny really have no subtlety whatsoever in masking their emotions and he wants them, both of them, to be happy.)
Oscar had even encouraged Ruby that maybe Penny would enjoy going to to the arcade with her, as gentle nudge in the right direction, when he told her about it. Ā Sheā€™d been receptive to the idea. Ā Oscar had been happy to see Ruby so excited (sure he couldnā€™t be her, or Pennyā€™s, happiness, but he could bring them together so they could be that for each other).
But now they want him to come with them. Ā And third wheel their date.
Unless they donā€™t consider it a date? Ā Which, okay sure, knowing them, they probably donā€™t. Ā But still.
For the first time in his life, Oscar wishes heā€™d paid just the slightest bit more attention to his auntā€™s gossip on the going-ons of the closest town to their farm. Ā None of it was particularly interesting, but a lot of it did seem to revolve around who should be in a relationship with who. Ā Maybe some random tidbit from back then may have now proven helpful in figuring out this current situation of his.
A quiet voice in Oscarā€™s mind (one thatā€™s definitely his own and not Ozpin) reminds him its not his job to play matchmaker between his friends.
(Though, he does need to direct his restless crush emotions somewhere and ensuring Ruby and Pennyā€™s future happiness seems a good a place as any.)
Oscar grumbles to himself. Ā Heā€™s about to type out a reply saying, no, heā€™ll be busy, he canā€™t come. Ā Sure, he would like to, because he does enjoy spending time with them, but heā€™s not certain he should.
He gets another message before he can send his out.
Text from Penny Polendina:
Ruby said she already invited you to the arcade, but I just wanted to say Iā€™d be excited if you come too! Ā More friends = more fun!!!
Oscar knows he can still say ā€˜noā€™. Ā He doesnā€™t have to go just because Penny has now asked him too. Ā But sheā€™s his friend, and he cares about her (a lot), and she gets so little time off to spend with friends, any friends, including him. Ā If she and Ruby arenā€™t seeing this outing as a date anyway? Ā Well, then he can just let that be something he figures out how to push them toward later.
After taking a deep breath, Oscar messages back asking after details, like when exactly in the day they were planning on going.

MCU: 10 Ways WandaVision and Falcon & The Winter Soldier are the Same
So now we have 2 of Marvel's Phase 3.5 shows in the books, and both have been pretty great. In the 7 week wait for Loki though we'll have time to mull things over.
When watching the Falcon & Winter Soldier finale though, I started to notice that there were some patterns between it and Wandavision. While two completely different stories they did share some similar beats, so here's 10 I spotted and thus 10 to look out for when Loki comes around.
Spoilers for WandaVision and Falcon & The Winter Soldier, give it a watch before you give this a look
10 - Villains become Memes
Tumblr media
While one can contest that Zemo acts more as an antihero in The Falcon & the Winter Soldier, he still provides an antagonistic edge in the story. However, both he and Agatha became villains that had charisma to charm the audience, and their actions brought about multiple memes. On Agatha's side there was the wink, Agatha All Along and her in the fitness outfit, while with Zemo there was the 'it captures the experience', his iconic dancing and Turkish Delight. While not a story beat on the shows, the writers must've known that fans would gravitate to these characters to give them such content to use. Also add a hat tip to John Walker who got his own memes too with him about to embed the shield into a dude's chest, and Wanda herself for her nose scrunch being used as a meme alongside Thor's 'is it though?'.
9 - The Government aren't exactly helpful
Tumblr media
While the Government aren't entirely the enemy in the show, they don't do well to stay on our heroes' good side. In WandaVision, they enhance Wanda's grief in the fact that she can't even lay him to rest, SWORD instead deciding that her lover is government property and they are harvesting his 'organs' and vibranium skin as a resource to use for weapons. On Falcon & Winter Soldier, the US Government deliberately deceive Sam by having him hand over the shield to put in a museum, only to then take it out and give it to John Walker without even telling Sam or Bucky about it. In addition when they disavow Walker they try to reclaim the Shield - which, as the Contessa does reveal, isn't technically their property either. While Falcon & Winter Soldier delved deeper into the government's lack of help through the GDC subplot motivating the Flag Smashers, there were still similarities found with how SWORD - which is quite different to its comic version - antagonizes Wanda. In the end all this escalates because of them, and in the end neither of them get to keep the Vibranium.
8 - 'Good Person' is Bad Guy
Tumblr media
Although there's a more supernatural threat in both stories, the characters end up having their trust betrayed by people they believed to be decent. For WandaVision it is current Director of SWORD, Director Hayward, who appears adamant in silencing Wanda after using her as a means to power up White Vision as a programmable weapon. For Falcon & the Winter Soldier, it's Sharon Carter - descendant of Steve's beau who he also made out with - the discarded agent who gave up a lot for the heroes only to not get it in return, remaining enemy of the state and becoming the Power Broker. The shows can also have this reserved for 'Agnes' and John Walker but in the end people expected them to break bad from day 1. You could make a statement for Wanda since she looks to be an antagonist for Doctor Strange 2 though.
7 - The MCU add a little history
Tumblr media
Marvel has had a habit of changing Wanda's (and Pietro's) origin on a whim, the MCU deciding to source their powers on an Infinity Stone. Doing this however left a gap in the fact that Wanda is a Witch, which they cleaned up in WandaVision. Treading back on the Scarlet Witch being a mantle (though cutting her mother being a Scarlet Witch before her) as it is in the comics, they changed Wanda's powers from being latent and amplified by the stone rather than gifted to the stone itself. Falcon & Winter Soldier added to their history with the impactful Truth: Red, White and Black story, adding Isaiah Bradley into the MCU to further layer the conflict and tragedy Sam faces with being Captain America. Both are welcome additions to the MCU timeline, setting up for newer things to come in Phase 4 Movies.
6 - The hero wins the fight, but not the day
Tumblr media
Winning isn't always winning, as Wanda and Sam would discover upon the finale of their respective shows. Wanda defeats Agatha and Hayward is forced to face his crimes, but she has also come to terms with the face that the Hex must go, and in turn her family with it. While the Hex has freed all its residents, Wanda knows that she's not on anyone's good side either with the people she subconsciously enslaved. Sam gets it a little better, he's recognized himself as Captain America and given a patented 'Cap-speech', but he was unable to save Karli Morgenthau from being killed, someone who he was once so close to reaching and sympathized heavily with. Although the Super Soldier threat is neutralized, the Flag Smashers' ideals will live on to further radicalize itself, and its vision will further sow conflict and division.
5 - (Mostly) Bigger Roles for old MCU Side Characters
Tumblr media
Never one to shy past their crossovers, Wandavision and Falcon & the Winter Soldier both brought back side characters - some more obscure than others - from older films to gel into the plot. WandaVision brought back Darcy from the Thor franchise and Jimmy Woo from Ant Man & the Wasp to great comedic effect, fans already wanting a spin-off with them and possibly Monica - who may also count but technically not the same actress, the same can be said for 'Pietro' too. Falcon & the Winter Soldier stayed primarily in their lane of Captain America movies; with Batroc and Sharon both debuting in Winter Soldier and Dora Milaje's Ayo debuting in Civil War, while it was less comedic, the story was more interwoven with them since they all had ties to the main two characters.
4 - [Person] is obviously [Character]
Tumblr media
Possibly a bit of a narrative backdrop, or maybe years of MCU has clued us in on a plot twist a mile away, but both shows also were unable to hide well that Agnes from WandaVision and Sharon from Falcon & Winter Soldier were in fact Agatha Harkness and the Power Broker. It's not to say that knowing ruined the story, it just felt more of a 'when' rather than an 'if'. The main difference though is that Sharon managed to keep her villainy secret, and remains that way, while Agatha went too far in trying to take Wanda's power rather than help her with it and has now become stuck as Agnes instead.
3 - New Blood coming on the Hero Scene
Tumblr media
While the shows already did their job in setting up Wanda and Sam as big league heroes, they also looked a bit more in establishing new blood too. WandaVision established the potential for the twin Maximoff boys to grow into Wiccan and Speed - once Wanda finds a way to re-canonize them, Falcon & the Winter Soldier also made sure to introduce Elijah Bradley, Isaiah's grandson, which may also aid in establishing a Young Avengers team - what with Kate Bishop also soon to appear in Hawkeye. WandaVision also created the origin for Monica Rambeau, having her body altered by the Hex, which will likely be furthered in Captain Marvel 2, Falcon & the Winter Soldier also established John Walker as the US Agent to leave a potential for Thunderbolts, as well as introducing Joaquin Torres - opening the possibility to have a new Falcon. While not a bad thing to set up for the future, it is interesting that both shows had exactly 3 names that could become future heroes.
2 - 'Villain' character partly redeems themselves after a Grief-Fuelled Mistake
Tumblr media
Make no mistake, technically speaking Wanda is still a villain in WandaVision: she enslaved an entire town and suppressed them as side characters of a tv show. But the thing is that she didn't really intend to cause pain, it was an impulse action triggered by her grief. The same can be said for John Walker in Falcon & the Winter Soldier, he was already pressured by the standards being Captain America would entail and he was feeling the stress of a string of failures, a Dora Milaje humbling and a frosty reception from Steve's two close friends, juiced up on Super Soldier serum, and then his best friend just got killed because he didn't back him up, in a rage he killed a Flag Smasher with the shield - even though they were fleeing and not the one who killed Lemar, which he would lie about to Lemar's family. Despite this though, they managed to find some form of redemption, even if it was small. Wanda released the Hex and stopped Agatha from going haywire with her chaos magic, John gave up on his revenge seeking to save a truck from falling. Even though it doesn't entirely make up for what they did, it was at least a sign that they had not completely gone off the deep end...yet.
1 - Comic-Accurate Costumes
Tumblr media
Comic costumes are always a tough one because some of the older costumes were borderline atrocious. WandaVision at the very least managed to poke fun at it with them dressing up most of the Maximoff/Vision family in their comic-accurate costumes, Speed getting a few more nods in the finale alongside Wanda's revamped and quite on the money look. In Falcon & Winter Soldier, there was accurate costuming for John Walker's US Agent look and Sam's Captain America costume, not to mention Lemar's Battlestar outfit, Zemo's mask and Batroc's jumpsuit.
Overall, it's not a bad thing that they kept these story beats, but it may be worth trying to avoid some of these in later tv show plot points so that it doesn't appear repetitive and formulaic. These shows have been great, so let's keep that momentum going.

TL;DR is that I dislike the idea of a woman healing/bettering a broken man through the power of love (even if she doesnā€™t actively love him). Sure it can happen but I donā€™t buy that Sylvie and Loki are able to pull that off. Iā€™m hoping for something a little different. Getting this off my chest before the last episode drops. Spoilers for the Loki series.
Episode 3 paired the two Lokis up in an attempt to escape Lamentis and teased the possibility that Variant Loki may have fallen for Sylvie. Episode 4 then had a bizarre nexus event at the moment Sylvie reached for Loki. Mobius later berates Loki (and the viewers!) for wanting a relationship with Sylvie. But, itā€™s worth noting Loki himself hasnā€™t put into words yet what impact Sylvie or Lamentis had on him. Even his final conversation with Sylvie is a little too vague to assume itā€™s a confession of love. Finally, in Episode 5 thereā€™s a scene where the two Loki variants tentatively discuss their nexus event and feelings for one another.
I personally donā€™t care if a Loki is in love with another Loki or just wants to engage in a bit of hedonism. Yeah, itā€™s totally in character! Itā€™s delightfully silly, perverse, and probably what most of us would do if given the opportunity. What I do take issue with is the narrative trope that another person, usually a woman, is going to somehow heal a broken person through the power of love. Especially if it pushes her narrative and needs into the background. And I think the Loki series risks that as it stands right now.Ā
Because I canā€™t help but ask myself; would Sylvie or a Lady Loki have been as fleshed out if she wasnā€™t a romantic lead? As the only female Variant weā€™ve seen it detracts from Sylvie as an individual because her role has become Lokiā€™s muse and a savior. Another question that bothers me: if the metaphor is self-love, why is the show so insistent that each and every Loki is also a very different person*? And why is Sylvie -the- one to motivate Loki to change?
Contrast her relationship to Loki with Mobius, Classic Loki, or Kid Loki. Mobius is arguably much more encouraging and receptive to Loki, barring his meltdown in Episode 4. And even after Mobius has purposefully been hurtful to Loki he makes an effort to make amends and invalidate the cruel things he said before. And Mobius is able to do this while being aware of Lokiā€™s worst impulses. Thatā€™s a good friend! Yet the show doesnā€™t frame Mobius as a source of inspiration or strength for Loki. Not until the farewell hug in Episode 5. Thereā€™s also Classic Loki or Kid Loki, both have given us compelling snippets of their lives and could have given Variant Loki reasons to find compassion and love for himself. But the narrative doesnā€™t let that happen.
So yeah, itā€™s the meta that her character arc and purpose are now constrained by the framing of a romantic interest that bothers me. Sylvie seemed to have so much potential to me as a viewer when she was a potential sister or best friend to Loki. And now that they seem to be leaving harder into romance it limits her and limits Lokiā€™s character development.
But, maybe the writers are wise to that expectation and the trope. Maybe weā€™ll have a scene where Sylvie rejects being Lokiā€™s muse (I mean, sheā€™s had a rough life, give the girl a break and more friends). Maybe weā€™ll see that Loki has been projecting his own desire to be noble and resourceful onto Sylvie. She may end up not being the person Loki wanted her to be and that challenges him to develop independent of her.Ā
And I think there are some hints this could happen! Episode 5 laid most of the groundwork for my doubts. When telling his male counterparts about Sylvie, Loki eagerly proclaims, ā€œShe needs me!ā€ Up to this point the show has made it fairly clear that Sylvie is more than capable on her own. When sheā€™s needed Lokiā€™s assistance itā€™s usually as a direct result of his interference. Sylvieā€™s history as a ruthless, determined Variant is brought up by Mobius and she justifies it as for the greater good. Sylvie is much more cautious about expressing feelings for Variant Loki when they discuss their nexus event. Heā€™s the one taking risks and looking for a future together. She literally responds with, ā€œMaybe.ā€ Finally, Sylvie asks Loki for reassurances that he wonā€™t betray her. He doesnā€™t think to ask her for the same. So perhaps Sylvie wonā€™t be stuck in a role of the lady love who brings out the best of a bad man,
But I suspect weā€™ll see this trope played straight and Sylvie will be pruned in the MCU, yet again.
*tangent: anyone else feel like the writers glossed over Lokiā€™s sexism? Heā€™s used gendered insults at Black Widow, implies rape as a threat in Thor, and is utterly condescending to Sif, Valkyrie, and Jane when in speaking with them. The only two women who arenā€™t disrespected in this manner are his mother and Hela. Unless theĀ ā€œterrifyingā€ quip in Episode 5 was a callback to this.
