The end of us pt.3
Pairing - Jack Harlow x reader
Summary - it still hurts, but he tried to fix those bullet wounds with bandages.
Warnings - angst, pregnancy, swearing, secret kid, forgiving and forgetting
Tumblr media
You liked to think that you left in peace. But now as you rubbed your slightly swollen stomach you couldn't help but feel that a piece of your heart was thrown away. Your eyes were dry and red, hurting from the nights you spent crying. Every day you dreaded the thoughts of having to tell him, your inside voice screaming that you can raise the baby on your own. But you knew it wouldn't be fair. Jack deserved to know he had a kid, and the kid deserved to have a dad.
It didn't take long for you to move out, that very day you left to your parents house, only a week later getting the rest of your stuff and finding a place. A small apartment not that far from your parents. It was perfect, for now.
You had blocked Jack on everything, finally finding some happiness after months of yelling and fighting. In all honesty you didn't care where he was now. A part of you felt good that he might be in pain, after all suffering from his own actions.
While you were at your new home, Jack was on the other side of the city, moping around all day, laying in bed and barely feeding himself. He was slowly losing himself and the touch with reality, it hurt all over his body. If this is what it felt like he couldn't imagine what you were going through.
Urban suddenly opened the door of his bedroom, walking over to the window and opening its blinds.
" What do you want?" Jack asked in a cranky voice, his eyes squinting from the sudden light.
" We're going out to eat. And I don't give a fuck if you want it or not, it feels like at any moment you're gonna collapse."
" Just leave me the fuck alone."
Urban sighed at his best friend's words, his patients running low from the last few weeks. " You're gonna kill yourself like this."
" I don't care."
" Fine! Don't get better, don't see your fucking kid and be on your own!" Everything seemed to stop. It felt like the whole world dropped on Jack's shoulders, his breath hitching in the back of his throat.
" What?" He asked calmly.
" Nothing." It was clear that Urban tried to hide his slip up, pulling on a solid face.
" Repeat what you said."
" I didn't say shit."
" Is it true?" He was breathing hard now, his head spinning with a million thoughts about you. " Is it true that I have a kid?"
" Look, I wasn't supposed to tell. I myself found out only two days ago." Urban said watching his friend scramble out of bed, looking for his nearest clothes.
" And you didn't say anything?"
" She told me not to, said that she'll do it herself." Jack was running around the room, picking up random pants and shirts, trying to get dressed quickly. " Hold on." He looked back right as he was about to walk through the door. " Before you go you gotta fix the shit with Bianca."
" What do you mean? I already did."
" She texted Neelam. Said some shit about leaking the text's between you two."
" Fuck." He quietly whispered under his breath, his fingers running through his curls. " Okay."
" Hey, and, Jack? Bring Y/n home, you're not the only one missing her." At that he nodded, grabbing his keys and running out the door, this all feeling like muscle memory.
<3
You were in the kitchen, trying to take your mind off of things as you cooked. Chopping up some fresh vegetables you danced around the kitchen, moving with grace along the hardwood floors.
You were humming a melody, finally having some energy after hours of crying, only to suddenly hear a knock on your door. You placed down the knife, quickly walking around the kitchen island, moving down the small hallway. Another knock sounded out when you were only a couple feet away, the person on the other end seeming to be impassioned and rushed
" I'm coming!" You yelled out, one of your hands holding onto your small bump as the other unlocked and opened the door.
Your breathing hitched, not expecting to see the familiar curls yet. " Jack…"
" Hi." In all honesty he didn't know what to say. After weeks of not seeing you it felt like he couldn't breathe.
You started to close the door, not wanting to stand there if he was going to waste your time.
" Wait!" His foot was placed between the wall and your door, holding it open so you wouldn't shut him out. " I need to talk to you!"
" I have nothing to say."
" But I do! Please, I won't be long." For a second you catched his gaze, and after not seeing him for so long, it felt like all of your worries slipped away. " Please, just let me in."
You felt pathetic for slowly opening the door, letting in the man who hurt you deeply.
You both were standing in front of each other, making straight eye contact, the hallway now feeling even smaller. " How did you get my address, Jack?"
" I-I was at your parents house." You sighed when you heard his explanation, your parents always being supportive of your relationship no matter what.
You could see his eyes flicker down to your stomach, the slightly swollen skin poking out of your robe. Feeling his burning gaze on you, you clutched the fabric closer to your body. " When were you going to tell me?"
" Whenever I was ready." You told him coldly, zero emotion running past your face and tone. Silence fell like a thick blanket on the both of you, not knowing what to say or how to react.
" Uh, fuck it." Jack mouthed before taking in a deep breath, now making only direct eye contact with you. " I came to apologize. I cut Bianca out of my life fully and I made everyone else around me do too. I cut short on my studio hours now, only spending three hours there. So unless I have a meeting or an interview I can spend the rest of the day with you."
" Jack-"
" I learnt how to make your favorite dish and want your thoughts on it, I deleted any traces of my exes on my phone, and we can go shop for baby stuff like right now."
" Jack, stop." You interrupted his little babble, his rambling cutting short. " You can't just do these things now when they're the basics to a healthy relationship. I'm sorry."
" Please. I promise I'll do anything. You can hate me, but don't make my kid hate me." You could see the distress in his eyes, a piece of your heart hurting with him. " I'll earn your trust back. I'm gonna be better."
You knew it was stupid, knew that this could be a trap for even more years of suffering, but the few weeks you spent alone made you rethink your whole life right now. It was hard living without him, it was hard leaving a piece of you behind, and you knew it would be even harder with him. But something made you say yes, only promising that you were doing this for your child, not for yourself or him.
" You have one chance, Harlow."

dance with me? - kaz brekker
request: uh hi! i don’t think you’re taking requests at this time but there is just something that i can’t get out of my head. it would be a kaz x reader and they go in a job at a ball. they have to dance together to blend in so that means touching. so reader lets him squeeze her hand or something to take his mind off his past and stuff but he like hurts the reader and then feels really bad about it or something. i hope you like this and i LIVE FOR YOUR WRITING. um thanks i guess🖤🖤
a/n: ballroom dancing scenes!!!! yes,,, im a whore for these and oh my god this is so long totally got away from me <3333
warnings: heist stuff, touch aversion? and one mention of a gun
this is not how you thought your night was going to go.
honestly, it wasn't how the night was meant to go. but heists almost never go the way they're meant to.
even so, when you woke up that morning the last place you expected to be was dancing in a ballroom with kaz brekker.
the heist was at one of the more upscale parties thrown by some wealthy mercher. the original plan had involved you, kaz, nina, and of course, inej. you and nina would come through the front doors of the party with some fake papers that kaz had been able to retrieve. the two of you would be dressed extravagantly, nina more so than you. nina was meant to take all of the attention of the night, so no one would notice as you tried to take the necklace right off of a woman's neck.
kaz would sneak in through another door, dressed as a guest, but much more conspicuously. he would be your backup on the floor, if he got the opportunity to do your job, he would take it. and inej was jumping around rooftops on lookout, just in case any other gangs got any ideas or any of the plan was leaked.
that's how things were meant to have worked out. in and out, not raising any alarms, and walking out half a million kruge richer.
halfway through the night though, as you kept your eyes on the target dancing around the room, kaz appeared at your side. you raised your eyebrows, looking at him over the cup of kvas in your hand. the two of you had agreed that as a group you'd pretend you didn't know each other. the less interaction, the less chance of suspicion.
kaz tilted his head towards nina. you turned your attention to the girl in the pretty red dress. she was surrounded by people wanting to touch her, talk to her, just like she had been the rest of the night. you looked back at kaz with a confused look on your face. 'what about her' you tried to relay with your eyes.
he lifted his arms and motioned to one tall man in a black and white suit, watching her. you tried not to linger too much on kaz's ungloved hands but you did anyway. but then you noticed the very distinct outline of a gun strapped to the man's thigh.
you sucked in a breath and turned to kaz in panic. this party was strictly no weapons. you had a small knife tucked into your corset but you knew that there was no way to win a gunfight with a knife. and if that man was armed it meant he wasn't alone. and that he meant trouble. and he was looking in your direction. there was no way the two of you would be able to get that necklace now.
kaz seemed to search for something in your eyes. he had his scheming face on, as jesper had dubbed it. you could tell the moment he made a decision one what to do next because he physically grimaced.
slowly, and with evident hesitation, kaz lifted up his hand in an inviting gesture. your eyes furrowed in confusion and stared at his pale hand. he nudged it toward you and whispered "c'mon" under his breath.
you straightened our back and placed your hands firmly on your hips, "what exactly are you asking me to do."
he rolled his eyes in annoyance, but you knew him well enough to notice the way his hand was shaking. he was nervous. he was panicking.
"i'm asking you to dance with me. now take my hand. now."
he didn't wait for you to take in what he was saying and he grabbed your hand from your hip. he dragged you onto the dance floor, you only had a couple of seconds to pull up your heavy dress before tripping on it.
kaz placed a hand on your dressed hip. you rested your hand on his shoulder. he lifted your joined hands and pulled you a little bit closer.
and then he started to dance.
correction, he started leading you in a dance.
for a couple of seconds you were so shocked, by the feeling of kaz's hand in yours, by the closeness of your bodies, by the fact that the two of you were now dancing in a room full of the wealthy elite, that you could almost ignore the way kaz's entire body was trembling.
you pulled your body away from his slightly when you noticed, giving him more room but not letting go of his hand, not letting the act drop and calling unwanted attention to yourselves.
"kaz" you whispered and squeezed his hand gently. he finally looked you in the eyes and your heart almost shattered at the look in his eyes. you gave his hand another squeeze and tilted your head to the side, "are you um are you okay?"
he let out a shaky breath. he squeezed your hand back quickly, his face showed the slightest amount of relief at the motion. you furrowed your brows and gave his hand another squeeze, and he mimicked your motion. you raked your eyes up and down his body and his trembling had slightly stopped.
"squeeze" you whispered and looked around the rest of the ballroom.
"what?" you heard him say.
"just squeeze my hand. if it'll help" you whisper shouted at him. your emberassment wouldn't let you look in his direction.
but you felt him start to slowly squeeze your joined hands. his strength surprised you and within a few seconds, he was full-on squeezing your hand. you bit the inside of your cheek to stop a pained whimper from leaving your lips.
you could tell the motion was helping kaz calm down, helping him focus on something else other than the closeness of the two of you.
he led you around the room in dance for a couple of more minutes, the two fo you didn't say anything. kaz focused on not focusing on you. and you focused on kaz's tight ass grip.
he was a good dancer. better than you expected him to be. his grip on your thigh was feather-light, but he didn't falter in his direction and didn't lose his lead at any moment. it was easy for you to slip into this act. you had to stop yourself from leaning your head onto his shoulder, from letting yourself slip into the fantasy of being a princess with a handsome, non-murderous, prince. this was dirty hands himself not prince charming. regardless, you wanted to ask him where he had learned to dance like that.
then, inej, sneaky as she is, appeared at your side holding a very familiar ruby necklace. "got it" she grinned and then slipped away before you could get a word in.
then, as you turned to say something to kaz, nina showed up on the opposite side of the two of you. her attention switched to your joined hands and smirked, and then she looked at kaz and nudged her head towards the exit. "uh i recommend we get going guys, inej isn't as skilled at stealing as you two so we better get out of here. quick."
she started prancing out the door and kaz started dragging you away, following behind nina. you looked around and noticed a couple of scary-looking men were facing you and kaz. he let go of your hand as you quicken your pace and then all four of you were running down the streets. anything to get as far away from that place as possible before guns started going off.
a couple of blocks later all four of you stopped in an ally to catch your breath. kaz was rubbing his bad leg, tenderly. nina was laughing with inej, clearly, the two of them were pumped up with adrenaline.
you, on other hand, were shaking your hand to relieve some of the soreness you were starting to feel. you did it close to your body so the others wouldn't notice but of course, the professional criminals who stayed alive by noticing noticed.
"y/n, what happened to your hand?" nina asked, her smile being playful.
at this, kaz's head snapped your way from where he was looking. his eyes darted between your face and your hand.
you looked away and gave nina a very casual smile, "nothing, i'm good. i hit it on a wall or something when we were running here. just a little sore. now how about we see that necklace inej?"
after a couple of minutes of walking and joking around with the girls, bragging about the beautiful gems, they walked ahead of you and kaz.
your steps lined up with his, so when he slowed down slightly, conveniently out of ear range of nina and inej, you slowed down too.
you waited for him to speak. but were still shocked when he said, "i'm sorry"
you didn't look at him, just continued walking forward. "you have nothing to be sorry for kaz. we both did what we had to do to make sure we all got out of there alive. no harm no foul."
he scoffed a little, "saints you're starting to sound like me." you smiled slightly at that and glanced his way to find him already looking at you, knowing it was true. he continued on there was harm, is your hand okay?"
you nodded your head, "yeah. i'm all good, genuinely. but now i know you probably have a very solid handshake."
he chuckled and then got very serious. he looked you in the eyes as the two of you walked, "thank you. i needed that. i probably would have passed out if it weren't for you." the last words were whispered. you knew how hard it was for kaz to admit weakness so you understood.
"anything i can do to help", you smiled, "plus i got a free dance out of it. you are one good dancer dirtyhands." you teased him.
and surprisingly he teased right back, "maybe we could do it again sometime then?"

summary: an early morning with him is what you wake to, the moments of which are few and far in between
pairing: childe x gn!reader
style & genre: written; fluff
warnings: brief mentions of injuries
notes: very self-indulgent since many people are posting childe gifs and fics that i very much appreciate plz accept my contribution that also quells my incessant need for childe content haha
Tumblr media
The amount of sunlight shining over your eyes had to be a joke.
There is too much to be there at one moment and you start to wonder, as you rouse from slumber, if you closed your curtains the night before. You shield your poor eyes and open them slowly, huffing in discontent when you realize that you indeed left them open.
You hop off of your bed to shut them closed and decide to leave the window open just a bit to let the breeze in. You whine once more when you flop onto the soft comforters as this day is a day off and you were supposed to sleep in after all.
In hopes of going back to sleep, you flip to your side and startle yourself when your arm whacks something solid and warm. It grunts and you immediately push yourself up to a sitting position to glare at the anomaly. You were already irritated and whatever was there just had to deal with the wrath of your sleep-seeking self regardless if you were armed or not.
The person only shifts his head to face you as he is currently sleeping on his stomach, back exposed to your eyes. His own are still closed as he lets out a tired sigh through his nose. Your eyes soften when you realize that it’s him, hair tousled from sleep and body lax on your bed.
Childe sighs and groans, presumably from a dream he might be having since he makes no move to wake up. Your gaze flickers over to his back again and you see that they are littered in fresh bruises and small cuts. Your fingers find themselves grazing his skin carefully, feeling the bumps from those injuries.
You know what he does, of course, but you can’t stop him. He tells you enough to make sure you’re informed, but too little to ensure his full safety. There’s no doubt that he’s a strong fighter but sometimes he overdoes it which makes you worry about him when he leaves.
You trail your hand to his face and cup it gently, smoothing over his cheek that had an old bruise healing. At your touch he encloses his hand around your wrist to keep it there. His head turns, eyes still closed, as he presses a kiss to your palm. The breeze arrives and it blows the curtain to the side, shining the sun in his eyes this time. Childe groans and you move your body to block the light. His eyes blink open and a small smile forms on his lips when he sees you.
“Hey there, sweetheart,” his voice is slightly hoarse but it is always nice to hear him speak. You run your hands through his hair as he relaxes even more to your touches with a lazy grin and happy eyes directed at you.
“How’d you get in?” You ask in amusement. If there was anything you remembered after coming in from a tiring day was making sure that your door was locked securely. His smile turns into a smirk.
“That’s a secret~” Childe says playfully, reaching out to wrap his arms around you. “Come here.” You let him pull you down and he proceeds to press soft kisses to you neck. “I missed you so much, sweetheart.”
“I missed you, too.” You stay in that position for a few moments when you remember the injuries you saw. Who knows how long he’s had them and you know for sure that he never seeks help, always reassuring that he’s “fine.” Your hands push gently against his chest and when you pull away, he raises an eyebrow at you. You move back and he stares at you from his position.
“Lay on your stomach again,” you say and while he’s confused, he doesn’t question you. He follows your directions while you rush off the bed to find a small bag with medicinal items.
“Whatcha doing, y/n?”
“Patching you up,” you give him a blunt answer and he turns his head to look at you. Childe never says it outright without a little teasing, but he appreciates your care for him. Being part of the Fatui Harbingers is not an easy job nor does it come with little to no casualties. He sustains injuries day after day and the only time he feels safe is when he returns home to you. You always make sure to dress his wounds and indulge in his asks for kisses and comfort to distract him from his other life.
In the midst of his reflection he doesn’t notice that you were spreading something on his back and covering his cuts with bandages. He feels a cooling sensation and you pack away all your stuff before sitting beside him on the bed once again.
“You okay?” You ask, settling under the covers with him. He isn’t sure if the beating in his heart is going to make it burst out of his chest with adoration for you, but he can’t complain about that.
He lays on his back and before you can protest at that, Childe pulls you on top of him. He puts an arm around your waist and supports your head with one hand, looking at you with warmth in his eyes.
“Never better.”

Aaron Hotchner x Fem! Reader
Warnings: Language. Smut (very, very short).
A/N: This is inspired by that episode where Rossi walks in on Penelope and Kevin in the shower HAHAHA.
Word Count: 1,298
“You know, I think he’s seeing someone.”
Tumblr media
Aaron’s kisses were hot, heavy, and they moved with each of his hard thrusts as he fucked up into you. He had you pressed tightly against the shower wall, keeping you there by firmly being squished against you. He didn’t stop his movements, loving your noises and whimpers too much to even think about teasing you.
“Oh, fuck! You feel amazing...” You breathed, throat straining to get the words out.
He sucked on your neck for that, leaving a purpling bruise and chuckling just below your ear. He had a rather rough day, and he had a lot of pent up frustration that you were more than glad to take off of him. He held you up even higher, slamming into you at a new angle that had your toes curling behind his back.
Hot water from the shower head was still flowing steadily, drenching the both of you and filling the room with so much steam that it was getting difficult to breathe. He needed some gratification after his horrible day that you had seen from beginning to end, and he was grateful that he had you to ease his tension.
“You’re so perfect...so beautiful.” He praised as he felt your legs tighten around him, letting him know that the band was about to snap.
His suspicions were correct. A few seconds and thrusts later, his name rolled off of your tongue deliciously, and he was milking your walls white as you released around him. Your breathings were heavy as he set you down on the floor, your legs feeling a bit wobbly. He peppered you with lazy kisses, the shower washing away the evidence of your dirty encounter. He eventually pulled back to look at you, all the traces of lust were gone from your eyes and had been replaced with contentment.
“That was-” Aaron went to say, but was cut off when a loud knock was heard on your apartment door.
It was pretty late, nearing 11:30 at night. You had absolutely no idea who could be there this late.
“I’ll get it.” You grumbled, annoyed that someone was interrupting your more than enjoyable shower.
Aaron whined in protest, but helped you out of the shower to keep you from slipping and possibly hurting yourself. The knocks had grown louder now, and you scrambled to throw on your robe and get to the door. You expected it to be one of your nosy neighbors to see what all the noise had been about, but you were shocked when you saw your best friend standing there.
“Hi, [Y/N].” Spencer greeted, allowing himself inside as he normally did.
It wasn’t at all uncommon for Spencer to drop by your apartment. He was rather spontaneous despite popular belief. Sometimes he would just get bored because he couldn’t sleep or he just wanted someone to talk to. But he almost never came over this late, or at least without calling first.
“Uh, hey, Spence.” You greeted, feeling all your blood rush at the remembrance that Aaron was in your bathroom alone.
Spencer didn’t know about you and Hotch. No one did. Except for Rossi, who figured it out himself. It was something that you and Aaron agreed to keep on the down low, and out of public knowledge. It was a frowned upon thing to date a co-worker...or in your case, your superior. It was nice to have a little secret that you were keeping from the team. It kept things interesting.
“Did Hotch seem weird to you today?” Spencer asked, entering your small kitchen and opening the fridge.
“I...not really, no.” You lied, knowing he had a terrible day.
You couldn’t see Spencer from the refrigerator door blocking him, but his muffled reply alerted you that he had just found your leftover pizza from about an hour ago.
“He just seemed off to me. He never yells at you like that.” Spencer remarked.
It was true that Aaron had yelled at you in front of everyone, resulting in the two of you getting into a massive fight, before making up over pizza and a movie...and then a round of shower sex.
“I’m sure he had his reasons,” You replied, the sudden lack of sound of the running water from the shower setting in; “Spence, now really isn’t a good-”
“You know, I think he’s seeing someone.” Spencer cut you off.
That sparked your interest for obvious reasons. You had already begun to wonder how NO ONE had picked up on it yet (other than Rossi). You were curious to see what Spencer was picking up on.
“Oh? Why do you say that?” You questioned.
Spencer rose from the fridge, closing the door with a half-eaten slice of pizza in his hand.
“He just seems happier, aside from today,” Spencer said; “And a few days ago, he walked past me and I could smell perfume. Definitely not his regular cologne.” He announced.
You snorted, teasing the lanky man.
“Are you smelling Aaron on a regular basis?” You joked.
Spencer stopped his chewing, and raised a brow.
“Aaron? Since when are you on a first name basis with Hotch?” Spencer queried.
Your cheeks went hot at your mistake, your amused smile fading.
“Oh, well...I just meant-”
And then the man in question made his entrance. Almost stark naked if it hadn’t been for the towel around his waist.
“Baby, I know that you know this, but your hot water heater is terrible.” Hotch said, referring to how your shower could go from blazing hot to frigidly cold in a matter of seconds.
Spencer’s entire face went red, the tips of his ears almost going purple at the sight of Hotch in front of him. Hotch noticed your deer-in-headlights stare and Spencer’s ghostly look. The three of you were frozen in time, very aware of the situation and how peculiar it was.
“Reid, what the- what are you doing here?” Aaron asked in a calm, yet panicked tone.
Aaron knew that you and Spencer spent a lot of time together outside of work, but he didn’t think that Spencer would ever show up when he was there. Spencer’s eyes couldn’t help but dart between the two of you, back and forth as if he were trying to convince himself it was real.
“I thought that [Y/N] might want to talk about today...but I see I came at a bad time.” He blushed.
“Spencer, it’s...we just...” You tried to explain, but couldn’t find the right words.
This was not how you thought this would go. Spencer had just showed up at a very inconvenient time, and now was in the presence of two of his dearest friends who had just clearly been doing something they probably shouldn’t have been.
Spencer had just caught you red handed.
The boy genius was piecing it all together in his head. The pieces all fit together to create one solid, obvious picture.
You and Hotch were together.
“I’m sorry I interrupted...I, uh, guess I’ll see you tomorrow.” Spencer said, making a mad dash for your front door.
“Reid.” Hotch said in an attempt to stop him.
“Spencer, wait, it’s not-”
But he was out the door and down the hall before either of you could convince him to stay. A pit of dread and guilt was brewing in both of your guts. Now that Spencer knew, it was only a matter of time before everyone else did. It wasn’t that you didn’t want the team to know, it was more of the legality stuff you’d have to go through when they did.
You sighed heavily, rubbing your temples stressfully. Aaron rested a hand on your shoulder, his deep, sarcastic voice sounding out.
“That went well.”

He Accidentally Hurt You pt.2
Masterlist
Set platonically and within the group Part 1
Hyrule
Your blood was pounding as your feet carried you across the battle field.
Your hearing was rendered useless by the cause, you only thoughts were on Hyrule and getting to him before the hoard of monsters did. He had somehow gotten separated from the group in the struggle and was left to fend for himself.
You made contact.
The sword in your hand followed through your practiced movements, slicing all and any between you and your target.
You could hear him in the distance, you were close, you just had to get- just a little-
The hairs on the back of your neck stood up and the air changed. The split second static was your only warning before lightning struck.
Monsters fell all around you but you failed to pay attention to that. Your attention was instead on the blinding, scalding twist in your arm that held your trusted blade. You couldn’t even find it in you to let go of the weapon, your muscles incapable to receiving orders.
The pain traveled through your arm and across your chest until it encompassed your whole being.
Screams tore through your throat without your knowledge and when the attack subsided, your whole body went rag doll and your vision went black.
“Please. Please. Please.” A voice whispered through the darkness. It was soft. Pleading. A blessed chill seemed deep into your bones and you found it within yourself to open your eyes.
Hyrule was crouched above you, tears in his eyes with shallow cuts across his tunic and exposed skin. Not a lot of blood though, your brain supplies. You take a relieved breath.
“Hey.” You croaked out in greeting. “Glad to see you’re ok. I was worried.”
“I didn’t know you were there.” He blurts as if he didn’t hear you. Maybe he didn’t. “I thought it was only monsters nearby. I don’t think I have enough magic to heal you completely. This is all my fault.”
“Fault?” You attempted to sit up. You succeed. Mostly.
A grunt leaves your mouth at the stiffness in your joints and you force yourself to power though to reach into your inventory.
A sniffle leaves your Traveler when you push his hands away when you find your target. The red liquid glints in the dying sunlight and you hand it out to him. “Think you can open it?”
He nods and pry's it open before you can even think about getting into a better sitting position.
You don’t think twice about taking the potion when he hands it back.
“Save your magic.” You say. “I’ll be fine.”
And you know you’re right....It’ll take a little more than that to convince the rest of the group when you get back though. Hyrule plans to smother you until not a single blemish is left. The others? Well... They’ll keep an eye on you.
Twilight
“Ten rupees says you can’t make that throw.” You hear Warriors say.
“Double it and I’ll gladly prove you wrong.” Twilight responds.
The book in your lap calls for attention more than whatever those two are doing for the sake of friendly competition. You don’t look up, trying to keep your eyes on the page but you can’t help the growing curiosity in the back of your head.
“What are we using to aim with?”
“That?”
“Sure.”
You roll your eyes and keep your head down.
“I’ll be twenty rupees richer and it’ll shut your mouth. Just watch.” Twilight grumbles.
There’s a tap and a growl before something comes at your head full throttle. It’s dense but not enough to keep it from exploding all into your hair and it knocks you over slightly.
You closed your book to protect it from the falling matter and reach at the spot. By your feet laying the offending object.
An apple.
They threw an apple at your head. Correction. Twilight threw an apple at your head.
The thoughts in your head spin a bit. Your whole head is throbbing but you doubt there’s any blood. You look up just in time to see Warrior and Twilight running at you as fast as they can. Twilight reaches you first and kneels next to you. “By Ordana, are you ok?”
His hands hover over you, trying to take in the damage without actually touching you.
“Who are you?” You blurt out, very quickly realizing that it was the wrong thing to say.
His face drops and Warrior wears a similar expression.
“Kidding.” A pained grin covers your face. “Take me to Hyrule please.”
“I’m so sorry.” Twilight reaches for you and you comply. Once you’re on your feet he speaks again. “Warrior messed up my shot and it hit you by accident.”
“That’s a weird way to say you lost a bet.”
You kick Warrior as payback.
Sky
“So...” You sit next to Sky during the break. “What are you planning to make this time?”
The boy next to you already had his whittling knife out and a decent sized chunk of wood in his lap. He picked it up and spun it a few times, staring into it as if he could already see the form inside it. It was just his job to take it out.
“I don’t know yet.” He admits. “Maybe it’ll come to me.”
You nod and let him work in relative silence, the faint but consistent sounds of Sky working next to you create a blissful and serene atmosphere.
The others are off doing their own thing, each keeping to themselves for the most part.
It’s nice.
“Actually, can you help me with this real quick?”
Your attention is back on Sky. He’s trying to get his knife out of the wood block, the outline of the shape he’s making already starting to form.
You don’t recognize it.
Sky picks up the knife and the whole block follows. “It got stuck.”
“How?” You raise an eyebrow and try to keep the smile off of your face.
Your response is only a shrug and the wood being thrust in your direction.
You grab it and instinctively tighten your grip on it when you feel Sky pull.
You both use your strengths to your advantage and pull in different directions. You feel the knife begin to slip out and adjust your grip. Within seconds the blade is free and you feel it cross the tip of your finger.
Instantly, the wood is dropped and you cradle your hand close to you, putting pressure on the injured digit.
“Ok, got it, thank- What happened?” Sky scoots closer to you and pulls your hands out.
A thin red line follows the length of your finger and it only seems to grow as the moments pass. It doesn’t feel deep but it certainly won’t let you flex your finger for a while.
A quite hiss leaves Sky’s lips. “Well that could’ve gone better. Sorry about that.”
“It could’ve gone worse too.” You press a little on the injury, trying to will the pain away.
It doesn’t work, but hey, you try.
“Hold on. I think I have some bandages in my pack.” Sky gets up and jogs to where most of the others are sitting. He picks up his bag and looks inside for a minute or two before jogging back to you.
A small role of bandages sits in his hand and when he reach for your hand, you don’t hesitate to give it to him.
As he’s working on your finger, you feel mild irritation bubble up in your throat. “This better not scar.”
“Why’s that?” Sky replies.
“It’ll be the lamest story.”
He laughs and finishes his work.
Time
Sometimes it surprised you how short everyone in the group was. You weren’t sure if it was a Link thing or one of the biggest coincidences of the universe because it certainly wasn’t just because they were Hylian (but that probably didn’t help).
That being said, and what you could gather from The Captain, it boggled your mind further that Time was the biggest of everyone. Warrior made it seem like he’d stay small forever, implying that Time was smaller still when he first defeated Gannon.
That didn’t seem very fair.
For him and you....well everyone, only Twilight and Warrior were the ones exempt from having to look up at the old man. But you didn’t like the idea of someone so small fighting such a beast, so Time is included in your sympathy list.
Despite his size, he seemed to move as silent as a mouse. Only Wild would be quieter than him.
After some time of traveling with them all, you realized he was just as much as a gremlin as the rest.
He was not above pranking the living daylights out of poor unsuspecting teenagers.
And the thing is, no one could catch him. Somehow he managed to get them to in the blame on each other but you knew better. You swore it had to be him. There was no way. There was no way he could count as a Link and not get into this kind of stuff.
But no one believed you.
It definitely wasn’t fair.
With the stage set, it’s safe to say now that you were calmly, peacefully and quietly minding your own business. You weren’t bothering anyone.
You were writing in your journal under a tree with some low branches. Nothing too bad but in terms of shade and angle, you found it to be the perfect resting place.
You took a deep breath in and let it out.
Yes, it was nice.
“BOO!”
You jumped as high as your reflexes you take you and spun around, but you had forgotten where you were in the moment.
With a solid thunk, your head hit the branch above you and sat back down, with a curse.
While there was laughter in the your reaction, it was cut off abruptly at the first sign of pain. “Oh jeeze, I’m sorry. How bad does it hurt?”
A whimper escaped your mouth before you could stop it and you closed your journal, choosing to furiously rub your hands against the now tender spot on the top of your head. “Ow Time. Why did you do that?”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t think you’d move like that.” He moved your hands away and inspected the area for himself. “No bleeding. Doesn’t look like it’ll need a potion...”
“I blame you.” You grumbled. “This is your fault.”
“I can accept that.” He nodded and stepped back. “There’s not much we can do about it in terms of healing, but perhaps Hyrule would be willing to lend a hand.”
“No way. He’d ask how it happened and I’m not going to lie to him.” You pouted. “No one will believe me if I told them the truth.”
“Why not?”
“Because it’s you!” You glared at him.
A tiny giggle escaped from the so called Old Man of the group, Mr. Stick in the Mud. Senor Buzzkill. “And why would that make a difference?”
“I cannot believe you... Actually yes I can, you were doing this on purpose the whole time.”
He laughed more fully this time and didn’t seem to let up.
With a pout, you picked up your book and marched away.
One day you’ll get back at him. You just had to figure out how and when.
Four
“So, how do we play this game again?” You picked up the ball one of your companions took out. It was almost the size of your head and had crisscrossing lines. It was white and weighed less than you originally thought.
It was a relatively slow day and no one felt in the mood to dampen it by looking for trouble.
While Twilight and Warrior set up the net that was supposed to go with it, the rest were waiting and going over the rules.
“Just hit the ball over the net. You can’t the ball twice in a row, someone else has to hit it and if it touches the ground you lose the point.”
“Seems simple enough.” Wild takes the ball from you and tosses it a few times.
It takes a while for all the appropriate moves to be demonstrated but you all play the game with ease.
You were having a good time with your friends. Everyone was actually getting along for a change. With a smile on your face, you waited for the moment that would inevitably change.
You swore you could almost pin point when it happened.
With Four right across from you, his sudden change in stance gave away the glint in his eyes.
The ball came to him and he jumped up, higher than you thought he could and spiked.
Next thing you knew, you were on the ground, stunned and slightly disoriented and your face was hurting.
Four ran to your side as the game was halted. “That... was not what I was intending.”
“You don’t say... Can I step out for a minute?” You asked, trying to get your feet. Four helped you get away from the battle field- I mean, the game area and helped you sit back down against a nearby tree.
“Sorry about that.” He smiled apologetically. “Anything I can do to help?”
You looked up at him hopefully. “Lose the game?”
“Not a chance.”

new minecraft AU update! this one jumps between the past & the present!
warnings: zombies, injury mention
-
Patton found the old house on a cloudy day.
He was still hit with the urge to roam, every once in a while, and while Logan’s home rested on the edge of a swamp, there were green, rolling hills to the southwest that were lovely to wander in.
Logan normally escorted him, as an extra pair of eyes with a helpful cat familiar to prevent any creepers from creeping up on him, but today he had been immersed in his potions. He’d found a new enchanted spellbook while out on a voyage, and was practically bursting with ideas upon his return.
Patton had smiled and left him to it, waving off any concerns with a promise to be extra careful and come back home if he started feeling sunsick.
He hadn’t meant to amble so far off course, but he’d seen a beehive, and where there were bees, there were flowers!
Spurred on by the idea of a flower crown for his friend, he’d found himself farther westward than he’d ever gone before. The hills turned to a taiga landscape, and between those towering birches was the house.
It looked uninhabitable, the wood rotted and the roof collapsed, but something about it called Patton closer, and so he pushed aside the remains of the front door and walked inside.
The stairs were ruined, barring any entry to the upper level of the house. Any furniture that had once stood tall was now utterly destroyed by years of exposure to the elements. He stepped carefully, ducking past cobwebs and listening to each creaky step.
Finally, he reached the back corner, and stopped, turning his head this way and that until the dull glint of metal caught his eye, half-hidden behind a dusty bedframe.
He crouched next to the iron hatch, and with only the barest moment of hesitation, pulled it open.
Daylight spilled into the basement below, and he caught a glimpse of clouded eyes set in a rotting face before the zombie backed up out of the light with a groan. Patton stumbled back with a yelp, falling on his back, and then crawled forwards and slammed the latch shut.
There was no protest from the creature below, and he left the house at a sprint.
-
Logan had followed him back out to the house based on nothing but Patton’s panicked ramblings alone, and his brow had grown more and more furrowed as they reached the house, ventured inside, and re-opened that hatch.
“I passed this house many times,” he spoke slowly, voice pained, “and all this time, someone had been down here?”
Patton leaned in, hands shaking as his eyes adjusted to the dark. “There’s two of them,” he corrected softly, and then stood back up in time to watch Logan hurry out of the dilapidated building.
It was guilt that his anger stemmed from, and Patton gave him some time before following, ignoring the bubbling remains of a shattered potion on the ground to pull his friend into a long hug.
“Could you help them?” he asked, once Logan’s witch mark had ceased its glowing, and his fists were no longer white-knuckled. “The way you helped me?”
Logan had been looking at him with that helplessly surprised stare, the one that always appeared when Patton witnessed his supernatural ‘fits’ firsthand and stayed anyway.
At the question, his expression went firm. “We’re going to try.”
-
The next few weeks were a rush of planning, harvesting, and brewing.
Patton hadn’t been sure he would be much of a help at all, but Logan had an unending list of tasks that he was working through, and a surprising amount were simple enough that Patton could manage them himself, like scavenging for certain ingredients or preparing others in a certain manner.
Eventually, he even began his own little garden, where he planted the ingredients more commonly needed for most of Logan’s potions.
Other tasks weren’t so easy.
Gold couldn’t be grown, for example, and their luck in mines varied from day to day. Some of the ingredients were only found in the Nether, and while Logan had traversed it enough to be familiar, it was still a dangerous place.
Logan had once returned home with a crossbow bolt lodged in his shoulder, having survived the trek back by leaving the bolt in and drinking a potion of healing anyways. They'd had to reopen the wound to get it out, and Patton had insisted on waiting by the portal for every venture after, just in case something like that happened again.
Still, bit by bit they worked, until Logan had a refined version of the cure he’d created for Patton.
Applying the cure didn’t actually take that long, though Logan expressed his frustration with how difficult it was to maneuver young zombies. Apparently older zombies-- the ones that were more bone than flesh, the ones that didn’t flinch away from pain, the ones that no potion could cure-- were much easier to lead. More predictable after the last traces of humanity faded from their minds.
Regardless, Patton’s very talented friend managed to separate and enclose the two of them in cells on his own, refusing Patton's assistance to avoid adding an extra person to the mix and complicating everything. He did allow Patton to help him with the actual curing, and how strange it was, to be on the other end of the process this time.
The potion & golden apple combination went over without a hitch, and Patton didn't think he'd ever slept as deeply as he did the night after those hard weeks of work. With the former zombies now laying tucked into their own beds, healing more by the day, Logan and Patton were left to wait in anxious anticipation.
Luckily, they had plenty to do to occupy their time! The new residents would need a place to stay, after all, and though Logan’s home was cozy, it wasn’t large enough to fit additions. Patton had originally wanted to build a neighboring house right next door, but Logan had suggested they build it closer to the decrepit house, just in case these strangers wanted some space to themselves after their ordeal.
Patton had a sneaking suspicion that the suggestion was also in case the others reacted badly to Logan's witch status, but he didn’t call his housemate out on it. He was nervous about meeting these new people too, after all. He hadn’t really had the opportunity to spend much time with anyone but Logan since regaining consciousness, and sometimes it all seemed like too much.
Now though, building this place with the breeze at his back and Logan at his side, he felt as though he could take on all the muchness in the world.
He set another wooden beam in place, stepping back to smile at how close they were to finishing the house. It wasn’t anything fancy, but it had taken a lot of hard work, and Patton had a good feeling about it.
New beginnings didn’t come around every day, after all.
-
Patton smiled nostalgically at the house in the distance, the one at the heart of the village that he had built together with Logan all that time ago.
It was amazing how much the village had grown, one new home at a time, occupied mostly by former zombies at first, and then the occasional traveler settling down, and eventually a few kids running about. It had become a thriving community, and Patton never stopped feeling proud of all the work that everyone had put in to keep it safe and welcoming.
There was a curious little ‘vrrp’ from behind him, and Patton turned away from the half-finished wall to see Anxiety shuffling in place, avoiding the gaps in the floor that hadn’t yet been patched.
“Just lost in thought!” he reassured the enderman, reaching out slowly and patting his friend’s arm, giving him plenty of time to scoot away if he wasn’t feeling up to touch today. Anxiety held still, fingers curling around Patton’s hand in turn.
After a moment of this, he teleported away sheepishly, and Patton muffled a chuckle as he turned back to finish installing a window. Logan would be here soon, but until then, it was nice to have company as he once again worked on adding a home to their little patchwork village.
Patton would be the one moving in, of course, and though there was a new addition to their population, Anxiety was more of a secret housemate than a homeowner. (They wouldn’t want anyone gawking at him, after all!) Even with those differences, the process was still familiar enough to make him grin.
Anxiety made a small, otherworldly 'notice me' chirp, and Patton turned to find there was a solid block of dirt in his wall, the grass on top of it still green. It only took him a moment to connect the dirt’s presence to the empty-handed enderman shifting antsily next to it.
“Oh! What a nice touch!” he encouraged, and laughed as Anxiety teleported back and forth in apparent pride. “It’s fun to work together with friends on stuff like this, isn’t it?”
He couldn’t really understand the noises that the enderman made in response, but he got the sense it was a resounding agreement.

Heaven or Hell?
Most people looked at Bruce Wayne and saw a stoic man that was always serious, stiff, and solemn. He rarely joked, and his smiles were few and far between. You'd be more likely to get a blank stare than a grin out of Bruce Wayne; more likely to get your hand smacked away with a growl when you put it on his shoulder, than have him subtly lean in with the smallest smile quirking his lips.
Most people weren't Clark Kent.
It started out simple enough, as most friendships do. Bruce tried to kill Clark with a spear made out of kryptonite; had a revelation when he found out Superman grew up on a farm in Kansas with a mother and father; let Superman live; saved Superman's mom from a psycho with a flamethrower; fought beside him to defeat an alien human hybrid; watched him die; watched from the shadows as he was buried; felt immeasurable guilt; gathered four other people to defeat another alien; figured out a way to bring Clark back to life; raised him from the dead; fought beside him to save the world again; bought the bank that foreclosed on his family home; etc, etc, etc..
You know; simple.
After all of that, their friendship was inevitable. It was only a matter of time before they fell for each other.
For Clark, it all started the first time he made Bruce smile. It had felt like he was walking on air, a feeling he was infinitely familiar with. He didn't think it was possible to feel any better than that; and then he made Bruce laugh. Clark can't even remember what he said, but it had clearly caught Bruce off guard and he let out a surprised laugh, eyes crinkling just so around the edges, and that solidified it. Clark was a goner.
~
"Oh, so you can laugh." Clark had joked, grinning at Bruce as the latter tried to school his expression back to it's emotionless mask. It was a good thing Bruce couldn't hear his heartbeat, because it felt like the thing was going to burst out of his chest, and he knew right then that he'd do anything to hear that laugh again.
"Only when people are funny." Bruce knew he said something wrong when Clark's smile grew.
"You think I'm funny?" Clark asked, reminding Bruce of an excited puppy as he leaned in close with a big grin on his face.
"Don't let it go to your head, Smallville." Bruce said, rolling his eyes and forcing down another smile at Clark's goofy expression.
~
Unbeknownst to Clark, Bruce was just as smitten as he was. He couldn't pinpoint the exact moment he fell for Clark, it was just a series of small things that culminated in what Dick called a "massive crush", Alfred called "infatuation", and what Bruce called "a bad idea". Bruce cherished his friendship with Clark too much to ruin it by selfishly talking about his feelings, so he resolved to stuff his emotions deep down inside and just savor his friendship.
Let it be known, Bruce Wayne may be an actual genius, but that didn't make him smart.
~
"How did you talk me into this again?" Bruce asked as a bowl of popcorn was deposited into his lap. Clark plopped down on the couch next to him and earned a glare from Bruce as he just barely managed to keep the popcorn from spilling all over the couch.
"I called Dick behind your back and asked him to cover for you tonight." Clark acted like Bruce would accept that answer from just anyone. Did he not realize how lucky he was that Bruce allowed him to do things like that?
"I don't even want to know how that conversation went." Bruce muttered, looking at the microwaved popcorn in his lap as though it had personally offended him.
"Are you sure?" Clark asked, signature goofy grin in place as he took a handful of popcorn and caught Bruce's attention. "He had some--interesting--things to say."
Bruce was 90% sure Clark was bluffing. He watched Clark with narrowed eyes, as though if he looked at him long and hard enough he could read his mind.
Clark humored him for a few seconds before huffing and shaking his head, dropping it. "Have some popcorn."
"I don't--" Bruce was cut off when Clark popped two kernels into his mouth. Bruce glared him as he reluctantly closed his mouth and chewed, scowling when Clark had the audacity to flutter his eyelashes at him.
"You're lucky you're invulnerable-"
"-To your charm?"
Bruce rolled his eyes and looked away, blatantly trying to hide the quirk of his lips. "Just put the movie on."
Clark hit play and they both settled in to watch Annihilation. Clark tried to get Bruce to eat more popcorn, but the stubborn billionaire refused, so Clark made quick work of the snack so he could get rid of the bowl. It had nothing to do with the fact that he wanted an excuse to sit minutely closer to Bruce without anything in between them. Nothing at all.
The two main characters are in bed together, Natalie Portman's character was teasing Oscar Issacs's and Oscar started tickling her, when Clark turns to Bruce with what Bruce is sure Clark thinks is an innocent smile. Bruce eyes him warily, having a feeling that that smile couldn't mean anything good for him. Call it intuition.
"Hey Bruce," Clark asked, looking like he was just dosed with The Joker's smiling gas. Bruce quirks an eyebrow in question. "Are you ticklish?"
"Am I ticklish?" Bruce repeats, looking at Clark like he'd just grown an extra head. Clark nods, excited, and brings his hand up to rest lightly on Bruce's ribcage. "I trained with The League of Shadows for seven years." Every instinct he had was screaming at him to slam his arm down and knock Clark's hand away, but that was ridiculous. He ignored the urge, leaving his left arm stretched along the back of the couch. "They taught me how to withstand literal torture."
"That's great." The way Clark said it made Bruce bristle, as though he were being mocked. "So...are you ticklish?"
Bruce only just refrained from rolling his eyes. "You're not going to let this go, are you?" Clark shook his head, his hand not moving from it's spot on Bruce's ribcage. "I don't know." Bruce admitted, his fight or flight instincts kicking into overdrive as Clark's impossibly wide smile turned sinister, for lack of a better word. "But I sincerely doubt it."
"Oh," Clark breathed, smiling turning predatory. "This is going to be fun."
Bruce had every intention of asking Clark how old he was, but Clark chose that moment to start rhythmically scratching his fingers over Bruce's ribs. Bruce clamped down on the smile that instantly tried to spring to his face. He held himself very still and refused to curl into a ball as Clark brought his other hand up to Bruce's right side and started giving it the same treatment.
"I can tell you want to laugh." Clark teased, stroking his fingers up and down either side of Bruce's ribs. "Just give in." It didn't escape Clark's notice that, had anyone dared try something like this, Bruce would have rained hell down on them.
"I-" Bruce's breath hitched as Clark's fingers danced down to the sides of his stomach. "-don't know what you're talking about." HIs voice sounded strangled as he fought to keep his breathing even. His left arm was still stretched out along the back of the couch, his right arm resting on the arm of the couch. Both of his hands were balled into fists, knuckles white as he refused to give in and shove Clark away.
"The sooner you laugh, the sooner this ends."
"This doesn't bother meeee--" Bruce sucked in a sharp breath, muscles tensing as his brain screamed at him to clamp his arms down. Clark had buried his fingers into Bruce's armpits without any warning, and was now slowly wiggling his fingers into the exposed hollows.
"Oh? Does this bother you?" Clark asked, amused at how red Bruce's face was turning as he clearly fought to keep his arms were they were.
"Hnh." Bruce grunted, biting his lower lip as a smile was forced out of him.
"Oh, right." Clark was now lightly tickling at the underside of Bruce's left arm, and Bruce was regretting wearing a t-shirt. He never wore t-shirts, why had he chosen to wear one today? (Because Clark asked him to dress casual "Regular people casual, B, not billionaire casual" and Bruce apparently couldn't say no to Clark.) "You can withstand torture, this is probably a piece of cake for you."
Bruce would have loved nothing more than to throw a withering glare Clark's way, but he knew looking at him would make him break. Instead, he chose to snap his eyes shut, thinking he could block out the sensation of Clark's fingers dancing their way over his collarbones.
That decision brought about Bruce's downfall.
Instead of blocking out the sensation, squeezing his eyes shut just amplified the feeling of Clark's fingers gently swirling abstract shapes over Bruce's collarbone. Without thinking, Bruce tried to squirm away from Clark's fingers, slipping down the couch cushions in an attempt to escape.
"Where are you going?" Clark laughed, letting up on his teasing touches.
Bruce cracked an eye open, ready to tell Clark off. His retort died on his lips at the look Clark was giving him. Deciding to finally listen to his fight or flight response, Bruce took off.
Well.
He meant to take off.
Clark chose that moment to become a cheating bastard and used his superspeed to gather Bruce up into his arms.
"Clark, wait-" Clark was sitting on the couch still, but now Bruce was sat between his spread legs, his back pressed firmly to Clark's chest. Clark's arms were wrapped around him in a solid cross body hug that Bruce couldn't wiggle out of.
"For what?" Clark asked, eyes twinkling with mischief as Bruce licked his dry lips.
"Uh-" Was Bruce's eloquent response.
Deciding he'd teased him enough, Clark finally went in for the kill. He dug his fingers into Bruce's ribs, fingers wiggling wildly. All the light and teasing touches from earlier were gone as he made it his mission to pull laughter right out of Bruce's soul.
Bruce tried to fight against his laughter, he really did. He bit his lip, trying to curl his body inwards, but Clark easily held him in place. Once Clark started lightly squeezing his sides Bruce's carefully construed walls came crashing down; though one could argue his walls had come down long ago, since he allowed Clark to get him into this situation in the first place.
"Cla-hahahahaha-ark" Bruce laughed, the dam breaking as deep guttural laughter was pulled from him. He made a sound of protest when Clark squeezed the spot just above his hipbones, his body jerking as much as it could in Clark's arms.
"That's a good spot, huh?" Clark asked, undeterred as Bruce shook his head as laughs wracked his body. He poked and prodded at the spot for a few more seconds, relishing in the sounds it drew out of Bruce, before letting up.
"When's the last time you laughed this hard?" Clark, ever the reporter, asked as he wiggled his fingers into random spots along Bruce's flanks as he let him catch his breath.
"I--don't know." Bruce admitted, squirming as Clark walked his fingers to the front of his stomach and tapped out a pattern on his abs.
"Did you really not know you were ticklish?" Clark asked, switching from poking to lightly scratching the skin through Bruce's t-shirt.
This new sensation caused more laughter to bubble out of Bruce as he clung to Clark's wrists in a desperate attempt to get him to stop. "No." He gasped out, doing his best to squirm away as Clark dared to slip his fingers under Bruce's shirt to tease bare skin.
"No, don't do this; or no, you didn't know?" Clark asked, mentally noting that Bruce easily looked ten years younger when he laughed.
Bruce had a feeling that talking only made the sensations worse, but he also had a sneaking suspicion that Clark wouldn't let up if he didn't answer his questions. "Bo-hahahahahaha-both?!"
It was endearing how Bruce was still trying to answer him, even as he tried to squirm out of his own skin. Clark only wished he could see Bruce's whole face, instead of just glimpses of the sides when Bruce managed to wriggle slightly in his grip.
"Well, what kind of friend would I be if I didn't help you discover your best spots?" Clark asked, switching positions in an actual blink of an eye.
Bruce let out an involuntary gasp as Clark deposited him onto the couch, stretched out on his back, with Clark settling down onto his hips.
"A really good one." Bruce said earnestly, hands held up in front of himself to ward off Clark's wandering fingers. Bruce fought with a smile, eyes sparkling as Clark grinned down at him. "That's enough." He said, trying to channel as much Batman into his voice as he could as he eyed the fingers that were about to descend on him.
"Oh, are we using our hero voices?" Clark asked, stomach somersaulting as Bruce's eyes met his own. "In that case," He switched into his Superman voice "Tell me Batman, does this tickle?"
Bruce laughed at the absurdity of that statement, but then ten fingers descended on his torso and he was laughing for a very different reason.
"You are-" Bruce paused, laughter making it hard to speak as Clark jammed wiggling fingers into his armpits. "--so-hohohohohoho- fu-hahahaahhahahaha-fucking dead!"
"It's cute how you try to keep up that bravado while you're being tickled." Clark's ears turned pink when he realized what he said, and he tickled harder to cover it up.
"I-hihihihihi- i am not cu-hahahahaha-cute, you di-hihihihi-dick!" Apparently, Bruce heard him.
Instead of responding to that, Clark decided to walk his fingers up over Bruce's collarbones. Bruce's shoulders hunched up at the first brush of Clark's fingers against the sensitive skin of his neck.
"Don't! Clark!" Bruce giggled and Clark's whole world came to a screeching halt for a moment. His brain short-circuited, his heart fluttered, and he felt he was in danger of passing out as the captivating sound spilled out of Bruce's mouth.
"Don't what?" Clark asked through numb lips, mesmerized not only by the sounds coming out of Bruce, but also by the pink staining his ears and cheeks.
"Ti-hihihihihi-tickle my neck, you ass!"
That snapped Clark out of his daze, a sharp grin overtaking his face. "I cannot believe you fell for that." He laughed, dancing his fingers along Bruce's neck with renewed vigor.
Bruce was in hell, he was sure of it. Not only was every nerve in his body lit up like he was being electrocuted, in the best possible way, but he was giggling. In front of Clark. The gentle touches felt nice, in a maddening sort of way, but the giggling was mortifying.
Bruce tried pulling Clark's hands away, squirming out from under him, shielding his neck with his own hands, but nothing was working. Clark wouldn't budge, and when Bruce tried blocking his neck Clark just tickled at the shell of his ears. That had made Bruce squeal, and now Clark was zeroed in on them and Bruce thought he was going to go mad, in the best possible way. Every touch felt so good, yet so unbearable. He didn't know how to react, not that he really had any control over his body at this point.
Clark eased up when Bruce's laughter started getting quieter, feeling a small pang of guilt when he noticed the tears gathered at the corners of Bruce's eyes. "You okay?" He asked, resting his hands on Bruce's rapidly heaving chest as he felt his racing heartbeat.
Bruce didn't say anything, squeezing his eyes shut as he fought to get himself back under control.
"Did I go too far?" Clark asked, suddenly doubting himself when Bruce remained quiet, eyes closed, as his breathing evened out. "Shit, Bruce, I'm sorry. I--"
Bruce's eyes snapped open to see Clark hovering over him, a nervous look on his face. Without thinking, Bruce surged up and captured Clark's lips with his own. Clark let out a muffled sound of surprise, causing Bruce to pull back, thinking maybe he had misread the situation.
"Sorry," Bruce said, breathless once again. "I--"
Now it was Clark's turn to cut him off with a kiss. One hand came up to cup the side of Bruce's face, gently holding him in place. Bruce made a noise of encouragement, parting his lips in invitation as Clark deepened the kiss.
When they finally came up for air both men were smiling, cheeks flushed and hair a mess. Clark shifted off Bruce to allow the other man to sit up.
"I've wanted to do that for a long time." Bruce admitted, reaching a hand up to run it through Clark's wild curls.
"Really?" Clark asked, all but melting into the touch.
"You think I'd let just anyone pull that shit?" Bruce asked, amusement sparkling in his eyes.
"I don't see why not, seeing as you can withstand literal torture and all." Clark did a passing imitation of Bruce's voice, and Bruce couldn't help but laugh.
"You're never going to let me live that down, are you?"
"I don't know." Clark had that look again, and Bruce braced himself, feeling a smile already tugging at his lips. "Maybe we should practice, get your skills up to par."
"Clark." Bruce warned, hands coming up to fend him off. "just because I let you do it once, does not mean this is going to be a regular thing."
"Hmmm" Clark hummed, advancing on Bruce who, he noted, made no move to escape as Clark boxed him into the corner of the couch. "You sure about that?" He asked, leaning in and capturing Bruce's lips in a kiss.
"Positive." Bruce breathed when they broke apart.
"What if I did this?" Clark asked, kissing down the column of Bruce's neck. He purposefully dragged his lips over the sensitive skin, feeling Bruce squirm against him as he tried to stop himself from pushing Clark away.
"That's...that's good." Bruce conceded, laughing as Clark gently nibbled at the spot just behind his earlobe.
"And this?" Clark asked, teasing the delicate skin of Bruce's collarbone.
"That's good." Bruce breathed, despite his squirming. His eyes fluttered shut as Clark teased and nibbled.
"But not this?" Clark asked, wiggling his fingers quickly over Bruce's ribs and effectively breaking Bruce out of his stupor.
"No, you ass!" Bruce laughed, once again squirming beneath him and trying to push his hands away.
The night went on like that, with Clark teasing and kissing Bruce in all the right spots, only to start tickling him wildly a second later. Bruce wasn't sure if he loved or hated it, but he knew he never wanted it to stop.

Medicine (h.s.)
You’re finally given permission to cover the song you’ve wanted to perform for years and a special surprise during your performance sweeps you off of your feet.
Word count: 11.5k
Rating/warnings: NSFW - A lot of this is plot but there is smut as well. Contains explicit language and consensual sex acts between a man and woman. This is a story written in the 2nd person (“self insert"). This isn’t written to be exclusionary, it’s just my preferred style! Author’s note can be found at the end!
Tumblr media
"Ladies and gentlemen, I cannot thank you enough for coming out tonight to listen to me and the band. We've got a couple more songs coming up for you but I just wanted to take a minute to tell y'all how much we appreciate you." You gesture to yourself and the band behind you as the lights on stage come up a bit. "We wouldn't be where we are without your support. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you!"
The crowd cheers and you can't help but experience an insurmountable feeling of joy. It never gets old. You'd been in the spotlight for a few years now, already at the end of touring your second album, though the size and scope of venues this time around was much, much larger. There was nothing that compared to being able to sing your own songs and have a crowd of thousands scream them right back at you.
Being an up-and-coming singer and songwriter in the genre of country music hadn't been easy. Girls your type had been a dime a dozen, hoards of Taylor Swift-wannabes covering "Teardrops on My Guitar" during open mic night. You held nothing against them; there was a path to success for everyone, but yours had been, well, different.
It was a karaoke cover of Brooks & Dunn's "Boot Scootin' Boogie", a song that you'd been singing since you were a toddler, that had gotten you noticed by a recording artist one night while out with your girlfriends, which led you to where you stand now, performing in front of thousands. You were liked for the range of your voice, with it's easy easy transitions from the sounds of pop to country and rock, in addition to the way you performed, and your take-no-shit attitude towards the entirety of the industry. People liked that you were forward and left nothing on the table, though you had to admit that it was mostly an act, a means of coping with the pressure of working your way to the top.
///
"It's refreshing!" Jax, your manager, had shouted one day, arms flailing as you had argued that maybe your attitude was going to get you into trouble one of these days.
"Aren't you, as, you know, my manager, supposed to be the one keeps me in line?"
"You aren't out doing coke, killing anyone, public indecency and all that," he had shrugged. "Far as I'm concerned, you are in line. People talk about you because of your attitude. They like it! They like you. Why is that so hard for you to accept sometimes?"
"Maybe I just haven't been caught doing those things," you grinned, effectively dodging his question. Fame hadn't helped break down the walls that you'd long ago built around yourself. If anything, you had done some reinforcing, built a moat even, in an effort to ensure that you protected yourself from getting too close to anyone that would only end up using you in the end. You had seen the way people in life had been used, and what it ultimately led them to, and you had promised yourself long ago that even if it meant being known as the Boot Scootin' Bitch, you would protect yourself and your heart at all costs.
"Your momma would tan your hide for much less than any of those, you know. Hell, you should be more afraid of her than you are of me or anyone else… 'cept maybe God."
///
You shake your head, working the memories free from your mind as you grab a bottle of water from the platform on which the drum set rests.
There's one more song of yours to sing before you performed a new cover, the one you had been looking forward to for months. Although you'd gotten permission to perform it not long into the start of your tour, the set list had been rehearsed already and every other detail ironed out around it. You'd convinced Jax and the crew to let you slot it into the last concert of the tour, Austin, Texas. These folks knew their music and for some reason, they liked you so you were thrilled to be able to share something new with the crowd that had welcomed you to their city with open arms.
You grab your guitar off its stand and slide the strap over your shoulders, adjusting it as you step forwards to the mic stand. A shimmering blue shirt catches your eye in the crowd and you do a double take because surely it can't be Harry because he's—
And it's not him, of course, though the fashion of the gentleman in the pit area would surely catch his eye as well as it's right up his alley. It's not him - it can't be him - because you know exactly where he is right now and it's not in the pit of your Austin performance.
A grin stretches over your face as you think of him. You strum the first chord of the first song you'd ever written about him, although there had been many more since. He probably knew this one was about him, having come just after your first meeting.
///
A friend of yours was good friends with Kacey, who had been the guest artist that night. Her name had been added to the VIP list and in the summer of 2018, just as you were hitting your own stride in your career, you tagged along with her to Harry Styles' live tour performance in your hometown of Nashville.
If you were being honest, prior to his concert, you hadn't heard much of his solo work, apart from the various huge hits like his Kiwi or Watermelon Sugar and a few other ballads. You liked his sound, seemingly influenced heavily by rock stars of days past, but you'd had other influences to worry about in your own side of the industry.
Sure, he had country music connections through the likes of Kacey Musgraves and Cam, and legends like Stevie Nicks, but his pop and soft rock style was pretty far removed from most country playlists that you yourself had graced. Your genres just didn't cross paths and the two of you seemingly operated in different realms of the music industry, topping your own charts and breaking your own peer's records.
Of course, you hadn't been completely oblivious to The Harry Styles. One Direction had been too big of a deal to ignore and you'd often found yourself bopping along to their old hits, singing along as they played amongst the other nostalgic pop hits to which you listened.
The concert had been in June, a hot sunny day followed by a perfect breezy evening. Downtown Nashville was always busy, but that night the city seemed to buzz, bright with music and life. After meeting for drinks at Acme on the River, you allowed yourself to luxuriate in getting lost in the crowd that milled about on Broadway. It was a surprising thing to not be recognized in your hometown, but you weren't one to complain about it. It was one reason that you value your time in Nashville over other music-centric cities like Los Angeles - it seemed that people here respected the private lives of musicians. There was an odd fan here and there, but you'd lived a majority of your "famous" life in Nashville in relative peace.
You were early to the venue, your friend having wanted to have a chance to see Kacey backstage. You were excited to finally meet the star - though you'd been around the block of fame a bit already, there would always be people that you never had an opportunity to meet in passing. You had been greeted at will call and had been led backstage.
The arena was alive with excitement. At that point, you yourself had never toured a venue that large, so the experience of being backstage and seeing the operations first hand were thrilling and a bit overwhelming. In her dressing room, Kacey pulled you straight into a hug, gushing about how excited she was to watch your career take off. She insisted on sharing her personal cell phone number with you, urging you to call her to get together on a collaboration. You were in shock leaving her room, blown away by her kindness and the way the music industry worked in the most bizarre of ways, when you turned a corner and ran smack into a tall, solid, smiling Harry Styles. His arms had come out quickly to steady you on your heels boots.
"Fuck," you swore, shaking your head at your clumsiness. "I am so sorry. What a great way to introduce myself."
He laughed and the sound flowed through you, warm and sweet like a cup of tea with honey. "Y'alright?" His eyes looked you over, and you couldn't help but notice the way they lingered.
Your cheeks blushed and a wave of embarrassment washed over you. "I'm the one that should be asking you that. I don't think your adoring fans would be very happy if I took you out with a textbook tackle right before you're due to go on stage." You took a moment to give him the same appreciative glance he had already given you, admiring the way his deep blue custom-beaded suit jacket fell open to reveal a black dress shirt, unbuttoned halfway down his chest.
"Ah, 'm fine. Lil' thing like you couldn't do too much damage to me, even in those heels. Don't think they'd be very happy though," he said, nodding his head in acknowledgement of the already-rowdy crowd while offering his hand. "I'm Harry."
You laughed as you introduced yourself, shaking his hand.
"I've heard that name before, but I'm sorry to say that I don't recognize you. You don't seem like one that's easy to forget."
"I sing, write music," you shrugged, not sure how to explain to a superstar that you were on the way up, yet still somewhere much farther down the fame totem pole than him. "Country, mostly. Not sure if that's on your radar."
"The new stuff's not, but I may have to change that." He was tapped by one of the event producers, needed for another pre-show procedure. "Where will you be tonight?"
"To your right, in the pit."
He smiled and you had almost immediately fallen in love with the crinkles that appeared under the corners of his eyes. "I'll look out for you. It was wonderful meeting you. Oh, shit, wait, just remembered— may I?" he gestured for the phone that was in your hand and you unlocked it before passing it to him.
You watched as he dialed a number and put the phone to his ear. He paused for a moment before he grinned. "Hi Harry, it's you from before the show. This is a message to remind you to text this number and ask the owner of it out on a date. She's the one with the beautiful smile and great tackling skills. You won"t have forgotten her. 'Kay, bye!"
You laughed at an almost embarrassing volume, blown away by his cheek.
"Why not ask 'her' out now?" you pondered to him as he handed the phone back.
"What, and risk getting shot down? Wouldn't want to be sad and disappointed through my whole show, now would I?"
"It would make the ballads a bit more emotional," you had reasoned with a grin.
"Ouch! They're already filled with emotion, love. You'll see, I'll sing 'em right to you if I have to. Gotta run, thank you for letting me use your phone, that was a very important message!"
You laughed again as he took off. "Harry!" you had shouted to get his attention in the busy hall. He turned quickly, a small smile on his face. "She definitely won't say no, but you can wait until later to ask if you want to."
His grin stretched wider and he'd pumped a fist in the air before turning and jogging down the hallway.
You liked to joke with anyone who knew the story that your life had changed that day all because you met Kacey. Which wasn't a complete lie - it had been her dressing room you'd come out of before slamming into Harry in the hallway.
///
Singing the last lines of one of your songs, your stomach began to flutter in a bit of nervousness and a lot of excitement. Performing the next cover was something you had been looking forward to for months, and the moment that you got to share it with your fans was finally here.
You retreat from the mic stand to pass your guitar off to a stagehand, taking another sip of water to settle yourself.
"Doing alright?" Wyatt, your drummer, shouts over the pounding bass drum and you give him a thumbs up before turning back to face the crowd.
"I've got one more cover to play for y'all tonight," you say, grasping the mic stand to keep your hands from shaking. "I've been working on getting permission to play this one for quite awhile now. I fell in love with it the first time I heard it played and now here I am, performing it for you all. It's an unreleased piece by a very, very good friend of mine, but his performances of it are all over the internet so some of you may know the words. This song is called Medicine."
The song starts out with a steady bass line and the rhythm centers you a bit, steadying any nerves that still linger. The intro gives you a minute to shake out your shoulders and get comfortable at the mic stand once more like Harry does at each performance. You catch yourself having fun mimicking him and feel thankful that you're able to perform one of your favorite songs of his. When the bass drops in pitch and the electric guitar riffs, you slide in close to the mic stand.
"Here to take my medicine, take my medicine," you sang the opening lines, already settling into the sexy rock sound of the song you and the band had rehearsed relentlessly over the last few weeks. No, the genre wasn't one you normally dabbled in, but part of the fun of performing was taking chances, risks. You had to admit, you liked the sound a lot. It tempted you to branch out a bit more on your upcoming album.
The opening lines of the first verse throw you back into thoughts of meeting Harry that first night. You hadn't imagined what would follow the concert, let alone have the foresight to see it bringing you to this very moment in time.
///
You had been standing outside the arena after the concert, ears buzzing and heart thumping still from the incredible show Harry had put on. As soon as he disappeared from the backstage hall earlier, you had immediately saved his number to your phone, still in disbelief over the night's events.
Your heart had soared when your phone began to vibrate, not in a text message but in a voice call. Harry's name appeared on the screen and your friend had nudged you, clearly approving of the night's turn of events.
"Harry," you answered, ready to praise him halfway to Sunday on his performance.
"Let me take you out," he interrupted you. "Right now. Please? Anywhere you want to go."
You laughed and paused. "Yeah, okay. I might know of a place."
There was a lot of shuffling on his end before his voice came back on the line. "Might've had to do another fist pump."
"Told you she wouldn't say no."
"Where are you?" You heard the smile in his voice, already familiar with it.
"Demonbreun and John Lewis, headed towards the park."
"Give me 10, I'll pick you up." He paused. "Be careful, okay?"
"I'll stick with the hoards of your fans milling about, maybe ask some of them for the hot gossip on you while I wait."
"Don't believe anything they say," he said, and you could tell he was still smiling as he hung up.
He and his driver arrived shortly after, Harry's hair damp and covered with a baseball cap, dressed down in black pants and a simple loose white shirt, tattoos peeking out everywhere you looked. He exited the car and opened the back door for you, helping you balance as you stepped up into the large Suburban.
"We'll go to Pecker's," you said to his driver, laughing as Harry snorted next to you. "Shut up, it's just a bar. Take a right up here onto 24 and it'll take us all the way to Fairfield. It'll be on the right."
He looked at you and smiled before reaching out to hold your hand in the middle seat between you.
Taking Harry to Pecker's had just felt right. It was where you'd been discovered, where all of your adventures had started, and you weren't sure why but you wanted to share that small part of you with him after watching him up on stage that night.
"Won't people recognize you? I looked you up before the show, you're apparently a pretty big deal around here." He had asked, smirking, sipping on the locally-brewed beer that Clint, the regular bartender, was serving that night.
"Locals are pretty good about not interrupting our normal lives. Pecker's isn't as well known to tourists either, so it's a good hideout. This is where a lot of producers, executives and all the other professionals come to unwind." You ignored his comment on your fame and had taken a sip of your margarita instead. "Unless, of course, there's a drag show scheduled, then it's a bit of a madhouse."
Harry laughs into his drink and you grin. "So," he started after a pause, twiddling with the rings on his right hand. "What'd you think?"
"It was incredible," you said without hesitation. "Truly one of the best live shows I've seen in a long time, country acts included. You've got such a magnetism about you that people can't help but want to watch." You blushed a bit, alcohol and the quick comfort of him loosening your lips. "The whole water spraying trick was hot," you admit, making him blush. "And don't tell Stevie, but I think I might prefer your version of The Chain."
"Sacrilege! That's some incredibly high praise," he said, a small smile teasing at the corners of his mouth.
"Earned and deserved," you said, tilting your glass to his. "Honestly, Harry, you're an incredible musician. There aren't many out there that have the whole package like that."
"What about you? You seem like the whole package."
"I don't know if I'd say that. If you looked me up, you've likely seen what they say about me. 'My attitude won't get me far' and all. But I don't think it's my attitude, so much as it is my willingness to take the risks that others won't. I'm not out here to make music that's just there to be sold. Hell, I couldn't care less about the money. All I want is to create music that makes me feel fulfilled, and I think that honesty scares them." You twirled your finger in the condensation of the glass in front of you. You glanced up to his face finding his eyes already on yours, holding your gaze steadily. "It doesn't scare you, does it?"
"It's the most refreshing thing I've heard in a while. Not many people in the industry are fearless in the face of failure like that."
"I'm definitely not fearless; I just refuse to change who I am to make a buck."
"Who are you then?" Harry had asked, and telling him your story was easy. You couldn't understand how it was so natural, opening up to a stranger, but as the conversation wore on, you realized how similar you and Harry were in terms of the way you conducted your professional lives and that was without apology.
And you also realized, as the evening continued and you and Harry crept your bar stools closer and closer to one another, feet and knees bumping, his fingers tracing the ridges of your knuckles as you shared life stories like long lost friends, that you didn't want it to end.
///
"He's acting like a gentleman," you continue, changing up the lyrics slightly as you finish the first verse. The line always made you smile and you let yourself briefly flash back into your reminiscing about the night you'd met Harry, and how, even though he had acted gentlemanly upon dropping you off for the evening, you wanted to be anything but a gentlewoman.
///
After enjoying drinks late into the evening at Pecker's, Harry had insisted on having his driver take you home rather than allowing you to call an Uber.
"Such a gentleman," you commented as he opened the car door for you once again.
"Maybe my gentlemanly actions have motives," he said, sliding his hand along your lower back as you step past him and into the car. Your grin matched his smirk as he shut the door and you decided that he'd been right - not calling an Uber was the right thing to do.
The car ride back to your apartment building was too quick and before you knew it, he was at your door again, offering a hand for you to hold for balance as you exited the car. Neither of you let go as you walked through the lobby towards the elevators.
"You're uh— You're welcome to come up, if you'd like," you said, suddenly shy but not wanting to chicken out on asking for what you wanted, asking for some continuation of this sweet but likely brief meeting between you two. "For a drink, I mean, or to keep chatting, you know."
Harry smiled and glanced around the empty lobby. His hand in yours smoothed up the length of your arm, over your shoulder, and came to rest at your jaw. "I'd love to, believe me. You have no idea how much I want to." He leaned towards you, pressing a quick kiss to your forehead and your skin burned at the contact of his lips. "But I want to do this the right way. Don't want you to get the wrong idea of me."
"What if I want the wrong idea of you?"
He laughed, the sound open and honest and it had given you hope. "You called me a gentleman earlier and I have to admit that I liked it, coming from you. Would like to keep up the facade that I am, even if it's just for a bit." His face searched yours, each of you trying to read the thoughts that were flying through one another's minds. "You have beautiful lips," he whispered suddenly, his accent thicker than it had been all night.
Your mouth quirked into a smile, unable to do anything but preen at his compliment. "You do too," you replied, just as softly.
"Can I kiss you?"
"Please, yes." Before the words had settled he was kissing you, slowly and with too much care, like you would break if he wasn't gentle enough. It was over much too quick but you knew you would remember every moment of it for the rest of your life.
"Christ, I'd wanted to do that all night." His thumb smoothed over your cheekbone, smiling when you leaned into the touch. He glanced up as the elevator doors swung open and gently nudged you towards them. "Thank you, truly, for a wonderful evening. I promise to give you a call soon."
"I'll send Kacey after you if you don't!" you laughed, stepping into the lift.
"Good night darling." He winked and the doors slid shut, leaving you alone with your thoughts and the delicious ghost of his lips on yours.
///
"Give me that adrenaline, that adrenaline, think I'm gonna stick with you," you finish the first verse as Ryann rips through the chords on her guitar. You loved that the song built slowly, and even though that meant a quieter beginning, it promised an explosive end.
Though the crowd had been hesitant at first, you can see that the first few rows of them are nodding along, countless phones out recording the performance. You know that somewhere out there at your request is a member of your press team, professionally filming the cover. You may only be doing it once, but you were determined to make sure you would never forget it.
///
You had enough time at home to check some of your social media accounts, shower and get comfortable in bed before your phone rang again. For the second time that day, your heart soared seeing Harry's name light up your screen.
"If you're going to say that you're downstairs because you've reconsidered my offer for that nightcap, I'll need a few moments to prepare as I'm currently in my pajamas," you said as a greeting and you were met with his warm laughter once again.
"No, no, I had to go back to the arena for a bit anyways, pack up and all of that," he said, still chuckling. "I just— I wanted to make sure you weren't offended by me declining your offer. Because I wanted to— I didn't want the night to end there. There's something about you that's… Transfixing. And I don't want to ruin that and make you think you're just a fling."
"That's quite a compliment," you said, a bit awed by his words.
"What was it you said earlier, "earned and deserved", yeah?" He said, quoting your toast to him at the bar, making you grin. "I want you to be more than that. I'd like to get to know you, the gentlemanly way."
"Okay. Will we have a chaperone at our next date then?" He laughed but didn't correct your referral to that evening as a date. You had snuggled a bit deeper into the sheets, still disbelieving that all of this had been the result of being dragged along to a concert.
"No chaperones," he chuckled, "but yes, I do want to take you out again, if you'd let me."
"Hmm," you jokingly pondered aloud, as if answering with anything other than a resounding "yes" was on your mind. "I suppose I could fit something into my schedule."
"I hope that's a yes."
"Of course it's a yes! I didn't want the night to end either. And don't you dare say that you just did another fist pump," you had laughed, hearing the familiar shuffling of the phone on his end of the line.
"Me? Never!"
"You're adorable," you had said, a smile stuck on your face.
"And you're beautiful. Two can play this game."
There had been a comforting silence between you for a moment before you had spoken up again. "Harry?"
"Yeah, love?"
You had blushed at the pet name but loved the way it sounded being directed your way. "Thank you," you had whispered.
"Should be me thanking you. Sleep well sweetheart." You'd fallen asleep with your phone in hand, hopeful that you wouldn't wake up the next morning to realize it had all been a dream.
///
It hadn't been a dream, and here you were, nearly two years later, performing one of the songs that Harry himself had sung the night that you'd begun falling for him.
The second verse continued quickly and you let the lyrics wash over you as you sang, loving the way the rock energy of the song sounded with a bit of your band's country influence.
"Here to take my medicine, take my medicine, rest it on your fingertips," you sang, holding your pointer finger in the air much like Harry did every time he performed the song before bringing it to your lips as you sang the next line. "Up to your mouth, feeling it out, feeling it out."
///
Beginning to date Harry - properly date him too, not just make FaceTime calls to one another from across the world and sending texts back and forth until the wee hours of the morning thanks to the differences in time zones, sharing everything and more with one another as best you could digitally - had been the most exhilarating experience of your life, and you had performed in front of sold out crowds and accepted awards on live television. His tour was due to stretch on for almost another month throughout North America and the next time you saw him was when you'd been invited as Harry's guest to his show in Chicago just a few weeks after you'd met.
While he had put on an incredible show for the United Center, there had been moments that felt like he was performing just for you, glancing over to where you stood in the Friends and Family area, meeting your eyes and grinning. By that point, you could sing along to every song of his and you knew he loved it, loved watching you dance along to the music that he had created and was performing.
In a moment where you were thankful for the differences between the genres in which you two performed, you hadn't been recognized at all by his fans. You'd both talked about wanting to keep things quiet as you got to know one another, and you hadn't wanted a relationship with him, an already incredibly famous artist, to somehow influence the trajectory of yours. While it had been easy when you were apart, being together without seemingly being together was difficult. Especially in that moment, when all you wanted to do was curl up into him and soak in the post-show bliss with him. Instead, you sat on the couch with him, a cushion apart from one another, holding his hand tightly while you chatted about the concert.
"Someone is gonna notice that you looked to my side of the pit constantly all night," you said and he grinned guiltily.
"I like knowing you're in the crowd," he shrugged. "Besides," he scooted closer and threw his arm around you before dragging you in close, "you look incredible, how could I not want to stare at you all night?"
"Anyone could walk in," you pointed out, watching as his eyes followed your lips.
"Just want a little taste," he said, moving in closer, "Haven't I earned a kiss from my girlfriend after all of that work up on stage?"
Your eyebrows raised in surprise as you looked at him and he seemingly realized his slip-up.
"I mean— What I meant was— Shit," he scrubbed a hand over his face but you could tell he was hiding a grin. "Wasn't exactly how I wanted to ask you, but… Will you officially be my girlfriend?"
"Yes, H. I'm all yours."
"Love it when you call me H." He pulled you in for a kiss that you both lost yourselves in, finally able to experience the feeling of one another after being denied it for so long. When a knock at the dressing room door came, Harry had to all but drag himself away from you, hair disheveled and lips swollen, scowling at the door.
You threw your head back and laughed as he stalked over and pulled it open with a flourish.
"What?"
"The hell's your issue?" you heard Mitch ask before Harry widened the door so he could see you laughing on the couch. You raised a hand in greeting and Harry's scowl deepened as Mitch chuckled, taking in both of your disheveled appearances. "Oh, shit, hey, sorry. Uh, car's ready when you are. See you tomorrow bud."
"Harry!" you chided once he'd closed the door in Mitch's face, giggles still bubbling out of your mouth. "He was just being polite."
"Interrupting arse is what he is," Harry said, sitting down and pulling you into his lap. "Where were we?"
You threw your arms around his neck and pressed your body as close to his as possible, hoping that he'd thought to lock the door before returning to your embrace. "Right about here, I think." With a hand on your hip, sliding under your shirt to reach warm skin and one at the back of your neck, Harry kissed you until you were breathless and not only wanting more but very seriously needing it.
"Come back to the hotel with me," he murmured against your lips as you ground your body down on him, reveling in the way the action made him throw his head against the back of the couch and exhale sharply.
"You sure?" Your hands smoothed over the chest of his skin, tracing the dark swallows with your fingertips as you rolled your hips.
He shuddered at the light touch and gripped your hips tightly, pressing his up as you pressed yours down and the action made you sigh, the pressure a delicious tease of what was hopefully to come. "Absolutely," he said, his grin telling you he was pleased with the noises he was causing you to make. "Want you so bad, like I won't be able to breathe right until I properly have you."
You leaned in to kiss at his neck, his shower-damp curls tickling your cheek. "The feeling is mutual. Adored watching you up on stage tonight. Have I told you yet how much I love seeing you perform?" You nuzzle at his neck, urging him to tilt his head back farther, exposing more of his skin to you.
"Yeah, you have, but tell me again," he sighed, his hands running up and down your back.
"It's like when you get on stage no one else before or after you matters," you said honestly, letting your lips against his skin hide how truthful you were really being, spilling all of your thoughts about seeing Harry up on stage. It was scary, feeling so deeply for him already. But you wanted him to know, at least in part, what it meant to be able to watch him perform. "Something about your live voice just makes my breath catch in my throat, I can't get enough of it."
Harry breathed deeply for a moment, working to center himself while you nosed at the curls around his ear and heaped praise upon him.
"It's like you connect with every person out in the crowd, like you're singing just for them. You can tell that you're having fun and people want to join you in that. They know you love the attention," you whispered and he hummed in appreciation (or agreement), the sound low in his throat. "They'd stay out there all night for if they could, screaming about how much they love you."
"And you feed into it, playing it up for them. You know exactly what you're doing when you get to act a little bit naughty up there, driving them all mad," you said with a smile.
He chuckled and you could hear and feel the sound rumble through him. "Played it up for you tonight. Did it work?"
"You mean did it make me want to jump your bones the second you came off stage? Yeah, it worked."
"Fucking hell," he said, holding you close with his hands on your butt as he stood up. "Our first time is not going to be in a dressing room so we need to go now."
He let you slide down his body and held you steady as you balanced on your legs. "Would be pretty fitting though, don't you think, given how we met and what we do?"
"Yeah, but then I'd think about it every time I was in one. You wanna torture me relentlessly?" He pulled you tight against him, kissing you once more before separating to grab his bags.
"Yeah, relentless torture sounds like something I might be into."
He glanced up at your words, eyes dark and hungry, a smirk on his lips. "Careful what you wish for, love."
///
The bass line increased behind the riff of Ryann's guitar and you leaned into the mic stand, eyes closing as you continued singing the first bridge. "I had a few, got drunk on you and now I'm wasted, and when I sleep I'm gonna dream of how you…"
There were a few fans of yours and Harry's who apparently knew the words as they helped you out, screaming the unwritten word that finished the sentence: "tasted."
///
Harry was quick to say goodbye to everyone on the team before pulling you quickly through back hallways and down quiet staircases, sneaking quick kisses when he was sure there was no one around. You were both out of breath when you finally climbed into the car, grinning like kids getting away with sneaking around.
The hotel ride was quick, mercifully, but Harry had been anything but patient, his hand at your knee creeping up slowly, closer and closer to the hem of your dress, toying with the hem while he chatted with the driver.
"I'm gonna head in first with Martin and Eric will loop around and drop you off at the side entrance. I would wait in the lobby for you but this hotel hasn't been the best in the past with uh— containing sensitive information, we'll say, so Martin will meet you on your floor to get your stuff, then bring you up. Is that okay?"
"You sound like you've done this before, Styles," you said with a wink, using humor to cover the nerves that had settled in the pit of your stomach.
He blushed and you loved knowing you got under his skin so easily. "The band used to stay here when we toured… and I was young and dumb once, yes."
"Just giving you a hard time, H."
His grin stretched as he leaned over to peck your lips once more. "See you in a minute, love."
Harry climbed out and the driver took off once again, slowly circling the block. "He's quite taken with you, you know," he said, glancing up in the rear view mirror as he parked the car at the curb. He got out and opened the door for you in the empty street then used his keycard to unlock the heavy side door of the hotel.
"Thank you," you said, both for his actions and his omission about Harry. Sure, you had talked to him as often as possible over the last weeks and had yourself been on the receiving end of his attention, but it felt validating to hear that Harry's feelings for you may have gone a bit farther than just a small crush if people around him had also noticed his behavior.
Harry's bodyguard was waiting by the elevators and escorted you to your room to gather your luggage, then led you to Harry's door.
"Car'll be around about 9 tomorrow morning, H. Flight's at 10:30." He turned to you. "I understand you have business to continue here in Chicago?"
"Yes, meetings tomorrow and then I fly back to Nashville in the evening."
"There'll be a driver ready for you tomorrow as well. He's been instructed to take you wherever you need to go and he'll stay until you depart. Have a nice evening," he nodded at Harry, who was smiling in the doorway, before departing.
"You didn't have to do that for me, I could've managed by getting an Uber," you said, stepping into the room past Harry to set your bags down and kick your shoes off.
"I didn't, was Martin's idea; says he doesn't want anything to happen to the one thing that's made me so happy these last few weeks."
"Oh yeah? I'm the one thing, huh?"
"You're everything, honestly," he replied a bit sheepishly, taking your hands in his. "Think I might like you a bit more than I already should. Lettin' my heart get a bit ahead of my head, I suppose."
"Yeah, I know the feeling," you said softly and he beamed.
He moved his hands up to cup your face, pulling you close for a sweet kiss that quickly turned insistent, heat rising between the two of you. Harry slid his hands under the hem of your shirt to rest where your spin ended and yours wrapped around his neck, dragging him down to you as you stepped behind you towards the bed. His long legs tangled with yours and you tumbled backwards, laughing as you hit the plush bed and Harry collapsed on top of you.
He propped himself up on his elbows and looked down at you with a smile, pushing the hair that had fallen into your face aside. "Hi baby," he said softly.
"Hi."
"Missed you," he said, leaning down for another sweet kiss.
"We were apart for like, eight minutes," you giggled between his kisses, your laughter giving way to a sigh as he moved to press a kiss to your nose, your cheek, your chin.
"Doesn't matter," he breathed into the crook of your neck, pressing small open mouth kisses to the soft skin there, "Any time apart is too long."
"The two weeks left of the tour will fly by. You should enjoy them while you can."
"Wish you could come with me, love performing for you." He kissed his way across the base of your neck, collarbone to collarbone as his fingers trailed to the small straps on your shoulders. "Would you like to take this off?"
"Please," you sighed, desperate and aching for the feeling of his skin against yours.
Your first time sleeping with Harry had been exactly what you'd wanted and expected - hot and fast, admittedly over a bit more quickly than either of you had wanted, but worth the weeks of wait.
Harry's skill set hadn't ended at singing and playing instruments. If anything, his vast experience using his hands and mouth only helped him excel in other pastimes that also utilized those parts of his body. To both of your delights, he had proven his adeptness in all areas multiple times that night, and once again in the morning before he had to rush into the shower, dragging you along with him simply to get more time together before you were forced apart once again.
///
You had spent the next two months away from one another, Harry having wrapped his tour and immediately beginning work on his next album. You'd spent your own time mixed between writing and recording an upcoming single. You had already written a handful of songs that were inspired by him and you'd wondered, albeit a bit nervously, if the sentiment was shared. When he stopped in Nashville on a long layover, pushing his flight back even longer to stay with you for another night, you'd tried to pry the information out of him. Unfortunately, no amount of sexual teasing or denial had convinced him — he, however, had you singing like a canary almost immediately, teasing you in the best way about how easily you opened up for him, telling him all about the music that he had already inspired.
You had been FaceTiming him late one night weeks later, both tired from long days spent in the studio. He had suddenly gotten shy, biting at the skin around his fingernails.
"Hey, stop that. What's the matter H?"
"Wanna ask you something," he mumbled, but a smile was peeking through where his fingers were still at his lips. "Jus' don't know how to."
"Baby," you sighed, "you can ask me anything. Y'know that."
"I know, I know." He paused and took a deep breath before a wide smile stretched across his face. "Would you maybe want to come home with me this Christmas? To London? Wouldn't be for long, maybe just a couple nights, I just wanna introduce you to my mum already, she's been pestering me nonstop lately 'bout meetin' you and Gem's joined in on it now too, so it's two against one when they call and I've told them that—"
"Harry," you said chucking, trying to interrupt his nervous rambling.
"—and she actually called me Harold last time she told me to bring you 'round and that got me a bit worried so I—"
"Harry! Of course I'll come with you. I'd absolutely love to."
You met him at the airport weeks later, desperate to pull him close and kiss him silly in the confines of his darkly tinted car, but you refrained, knowing how seriously Harry took the protection of your relationship from the press. You may not have been able to see anyone straining to capture pictures of you two, but you knew there was always the chance.
It was an entirely different story, however, when he'd finally pulled the car past the mechanical gate and into his private drive. You both reached for each other immediately, arms tangled and shifter knob pressed uncomfortably against your side, but perfectly content so long as his lips were against yours.
"Fuck— I missed you— so much," he muttered between kisses. He pulled away, forehead resting against yours, sly smirk pulling at his lips. "Mum won't expect us for a few hours at least."
"What is it that you're insinuating, Mr. Styles?"
"That there's plenty of time to give you a tour around the house, that's all," he said innocently. He gave you a sweet smile before hopping out of the car and coming to the passenger side where he helped you out and picked up your bags.
You were eager to be given a house tour, more than keen to learn all of the things you could about his London life. The house was decorated in a way that made you smile - eclectic but with a definitive air of cohesive taste. It suited Harry to an absolute tee. From the artwork that decorated the walls to the mismatched but homey furniture, you could tell immediately that this was Harry's sanctuary - every inch of the home screamed his name.
"It's incredible," you said as he led you into the largest room, the master. He walked over to the dresser that sat under the window and pulled open the top two drawers.
"I know we won't be here long, this time around, but I cleaned out a few drawers for you here, if you want to unpack some things. And there's space in the closet for you too," he nodded towards the door on the other side of the room, dragging a hand through his hair as he talked, "I had too much in there anyways and some of it needed to go and I wanted you to be able to leave some things, if you felt comfortable, of if Mum drags us out shopping and you don't want to take it all home now you can leave it here and-"
"You- you cleared out a drawer for me?"
"Well, yeah," he said, resting his hand on the back of his neck. "Made some space for you in the bathroom too, though I doubt it'll be enough, with all that you bring along to fix yourself up." He paused and thought for a moment. "I know how our lives are. I just wanted you to have some of your own space here; want you to feel as comfortable in my home as I do. Is that too much?"
"H," you said with a sigh, your lips curling into a smile, "it's perfect, and so thoughtful. I'm sorry I haven't done the same for you in Nashville yet."
"'s alright, love. I've already got a toothbrush there at least. I can take some time when we fly back to come and help if you'd like me to. As long as you don't end up wearing all the clothes that I leave there," he chuckled.
"You know me too well," you said, reaching for his hand. He lifted your entwined fingers to his lips to brush a kiss over your knuckles.
"You do look good in my clothes," he confessed, pulling you close to face him. "Look good in my house. But you always look good anyways."
"Said the pot to the kettle," you said with a smile. "I like being here already," you shrug, hands resting on his shoulders. "It feels like you, like home. Thank you for inviting me," you add, as though the measly voicing of your appreciation is enough to convey what you truly feel.
"You're welcome anytime, if I'm here or not."
"You trust me that much?"
"Yeah, I do. I'll get you a key and everything." He leaned down to kiss you slowly, relearning the map of your lips and mouth, before pulling away. He laughed when you made a noise of protest.
"The bathroom's over here if you'd like to freshen up." He had pulled at your hand, stepping towards the other open door in the room. "Figured a shower might sound nice after a long day in an airplane. Besides, I've gotta clean up before we go to Mum's anyways."
"Gonna join me?"
"Yeah, thought I might, if that's okay." His smirk had been wicked as he pushed you the rest of the way into the bathroom. He dropped your hand to reach for the hem of his shirt, pulling it over his head quickly. As he reached for the buckle of his pants, he had met your staring eyes. "See something you like, love?"
You definitely had, though you didn't think your attraction — physically or emotionally — for Harry had stopped at something that was as weak as "like." Getting to know him over the last six months had made you worry that there wasn't ever going to be anyone else like him, anyone that made you feel like he did. You had fallen for him, desperately hard, and the realization of it as you stood in front of his half-naked self almost embarrassed you.
"Babe? You alright?" he asked as he stripped down to his boxers.
"Yeah, you just got me all distracted," you had grinned, pulling your sweatshirt and remaining clothes off quickly before joining Harry under the warm spray of the water.
Meeting Harry's mom that evening went better than you could've ever dreamt it would. The two of you got on like old friends, and Harry had stared, almost in wonder, at how easily you seemed to bond with her. And then he had stared in horror as Anne offered to pull out the photo albums filled with pictures from Harry's childhood, particularly when Anne offered up the album filled with photos from Harry's and Gemma's emo phases.
As the evening wore on, you caught Harry on more than one occasion glancing your way, cheeks bright from the red wine he was sipping on and eyes warmly reflecting the bright Christmas lights. He always looked like he was a split second away from saying something, only to shake his head and look away with a small smile.
Later, in bed, Harry pulled you close to him. He was laying on his back, you on your side, and you threw a leg over his waist, soaking in all of the cuddles you could get on this short trip together. The room was only illuminated by the ambient light coming in through the blinds.
"Mum liked you a lot," he murmured, gently stroking the skin at the base of your spine, "said I should hang onto you".
You returned the gesture, running your fingertips along the lines of ink that make up his many tattoos. "I liked her too. She's wonderful, I see where you get it from now."
"Hey now, 'm wonderful all on my own!" He tickled your side and you couldn"t help but arch towards him, shrieking and laughing at the touch.
"Stop that! You are an absolute pest, you know that?" you said, grinning up at him.
"Ah, you love me," he whispered, and his joking tone made you smile but the way he pulled you tighter as he said it made you brave.
You let the weight what you were about to say wash over you, aware that things were going to change forever with just a few words. "I do love you, Harry," you whispered, moving up his body to press a kiss to his lips.
"Thank God," he had said, wrapping his arms back around you and pulling you on top of him. "Cause I love you too."
Leaving Harry after that had been even more difficult. All you wanted to do was be with him, but you had too much coming up with the future release of your album and Harry was still in the midst of doing his own writing and recording.
It was your professions, along with the desire to keep your relationship private, that kept you apart. You weren't sure how you did it, but your relationship had withstood the distance and odd-hours. The only step now would be deciding if, when, and how to confirm the suspicions to tabloids and fans alike that you were an item.
The wait was killing you. All you wanted was to show off to the world that Harry was yours.
///
The bridge of the song was followed quickly by the chorus and the heavy guitar and pounding drums had you rocking on your feet, body swaying into the mic stand as you let yourself get lost in the lyrics. "If you go out tonight, I'm going out 'cause I know you're persuasive."
The crowd was even more into the song now, many picking up on the words quickly and screaming them along with your singing. The rock and roll vibe of the song was coursing through you and the crowd, the arena electric with energy already.
"You got that something, I got me an appetite, now I can taste it."
You remove the mic from the stand and dance towards one end of the stage, singing as you move to the beat. "We're getting dizzy, oh, we're getting dizzy, oh! La da da da da! You get me dizzy, oh, you get me dizzy, oh!"
///
You had been on the phone with Harry one day in July, nearly five months after the release of your album, having him help you decide what the setlist of your tour would be when it began in November.
"I wish I could cover one of your songs."
He had laughed and slurped his tea, the sounds comforting to you, even over the phone. "That'd be a bit obvious, wouldn't it love?"
"I don't mean cover Golden or Kiwi," you said, tapping your pen against the pad of paper in front of you. "What about one you wrote for 1D? What about Perfect? Or Stockholm Syndrome! That was always one of my favorites."
"Getting permission on those might be a bit more difficult, s'not just me that's gotta sign off on it. Besides, do you really wanna be the artist that covers a One Direction song on her own headlining tour?"
"Guess I'll stick with singing along to them in the shower then."
You were both quiet for a moment, lost in your own thoughts.
"What if I covered Medicine?" you asked suddenly, realizing it was the perfect compromise, not to mention your favorite song that Harry himself performed oh his own tour. The rock sound wasn't a far cry from the roots that country music had and you knew it would sound great. "Even if it was just for one stop!"
"Hmm," Harry mused. "It would sound great with the band, I'll give you that. But videos will go around, people will know it's my song you're singing and they'll connect the dots about us."
"H, I'm ready for that if you are. I love you, and I'm ready to be able to share that love that I have for you with the world. Sneaking around has been fun but I want people to know how proud of you I am and how much you're loved and appreciated. Half of our fans know already, it's just a matter of us confirming it. I think that we could really-"
Harry was laughing at your rambling on the other end of the line. "Alright, alright, you drive a hard bargain, love. I think you're right, maybe it is time we stopped sneaking around. I'll try, but Jax and everyone else still have to agree to it too. It might be easier to convince everyone if it's just a one time thing. Pick another cover, something you'd normally do, in case it takes some time to work things out."
"I'll ask him right now! Thank you Harry!"
"I just have one condition," he said, and you could hear the grin that was surely pulling at the corners of his lips.
"What's that?"
"I get to perform it with you," he had said, and the smile already on your face widened exponentially. "If we're finally gonna make "us" public, may as well do it with a bang."
///
In the moment after the chorus, an 8 count beat is carried by the drummer and guitarist. For this performance, and the only performance you'd put on of this song, you had rehearsed the 8 count repeating once between the chorus and the next verse, as you needed a bit of extra time to announce your guest performer.
"Ladies and gentlemen," you shout into the mic, grin wide and face beaming already at what was about to take place. "To help me finish this performance, please help me welcome my very good friend, Harry Styles!"
Harry emerges from behind the stage holding his own wireless mic as much of the crowd screams - he may not be a country artist, but he was absolutely known worldwide. You step back with a wave of your arm, smiling as he begins the next chorus. His performance is for the crowd but he's singing the words directly to you.
"Tingle running through my bones, fingers to my toes, tingle running through my bones," he sings, voice smooth like whiskey, and the crowd adores him, eating out of the palm of his hand. "The boys and the girls are in, I mess around with them, and I'm OK with it."
You can't help but dance as he sings, his voice and the energy of the crowd propelling you to move. He watches you, eyes no longer on the crowd, as he sings the next lines. Immediately, heat pools low in your belly at his glance and the words.
"I'm coming down, I figured out I kinda like it. And when I sleep I'm gonna dream of how you…"
You gyrate your hips at the unsung line of "ride it", listening with a sly grin as some in the crowd scream the two words that go unsung.
///
After giving him a key, Harry had moved some of his clothes to your apartment in Nashville some time while you were away on the first leg of your tour. He had found the city to be incredibly welcoming and inspirational for his upcoming album and had decided to stay there for a spell while you continued to tour around the country.
You had scheduled a short break between your concerts over New Years, wanting to be able to grab at least one or two nights at home with him to celebrate the holiday before you were back on the road again.
"So fucking glad you're home," Harry panted, pulling your shirt over your head before attaching his lips to yours once again. "Missed you like crazy."
"Missed you too," you moaned as his lips moved downwards, across your neck and over your collarbones, down the valley between your breasts. Before he could reach around to unhook your bra, you reached for his shirt, as desperate as he was to see and touch what you'd been missing.
As he pulled the half-unbuttoned blouse over his head, you pulled your leggings off and reached for him, pushing him back onto the bed behind him. He unbuttoned his pants as he scooted up towards the middle of the bed, shoving them and his boxers off in one swoop.
You climbed on top of him, hurriedly reaching to kiss him as you rubbed your clothed center along the length of his hard cock.
"Fuck," he hissed, throwing his head back to allow you room to kiss his neck. "Desperate aren't you, darling?"
"Want you so bad it hurts," you whispered, sucking a bright hickey right where it would absolutely be seen by anyone.
You moved to continue kissing down his chest but he stopped you with a hand under your arm. "Not gonna last long, love. Wanna be inside you."
His cheeks and chest were flushed bright red, lips puffy and pupils blown wide. This was when you loved him most, being able to have him like no one else did. The same feeling always hit you at certain moments, particularly ones of domesticity, like when you watched him back the car out of the driveway or when he stood in the kitchen in the morning in nothing but socks, boxers, and his ratty old robe, singing along to old big band jazz as he waited for the coffee to brew. There was Harry Styles the musician, Harry Styles the actor, and Harry Styles the performer, but then there was your Harry.
"Yeah, okay," you sighed, moving off of him quickly to remove your bra and panties. You climbed back onto the bed and threw your leg over his hips, straddling him. He immediately reached for you and pulled you flush against his chest, his lips capturing yours in a bruising kiss.
You rocked your hips against him as he held you, your slick arousal gliding along his length, drawing a moan from both of you.
"Baby, please," he panted, and you could only mod in agreement, lost already to the sweeping feeling of your close release.
His hands rested on your hips as you positioned him at the entrance between your legs. You groaned in harmony as you worked down him slowly, the only sound in the room was your shared heavy breathing and gasps.
"Fuck me," he sighed as you set a slow pace, rocking on top of him to reach each spot that you know will get you there.
"Workin' on it," you grin. A quick swivel of your hips hit at just the right angle and you tossed your head back, repeating the movement over and over again until you shuddered with a final snap of tension, your orgasm rolling over you as Harry helped you move, hands tight on your hips, to wring all you could from the release.
"You look so beautiful right now, like a fuckin' angel," Harry said, voice low and gravely, accent thick with need.
"How's that line go?" you said as you slowed down, smirking when a harsh rock of your hips caused Harry to moan. "'Turns out she's a devil in between the sheets'?"
"Fuck," he groaned again, eyes closed tightly. "Can't just go reciting my own lyrics to me while I"m buried in ya like this, love."
"And there's nothing you can do about it," you continued, singing the line of his song this time, and his hips buck up into yours harshly.
"You're gonna pay for that," he had said, quoting another of his songs, before he had flipped you over onto your back and set his own brutal pace.
///
Like he can read your thoughts, Harry beams and wags a finger in your direction and the crowd screams at your chemistry together. You grab your mic from its stand and take a step towards Harry to sing the chorus together.
"If you go out tonight, I'm going out 'cause I know you're persuasive." Harry dances off to the side of the stage, performing once again for the crowd.
You dance at center stage with your wireless mic, too excited about performing with Harry that you can't stand in one spot. The music and Harry's energy make you want to move. "You got that something, I got me an appetite, now I can taste it."
"We're getting dizzy, oh, we're getting dizzy, oh! La da da da da!" Harry throws his head back, singing along in his own world and you can't look away from him. He really was a rockstar and getting to share the stage with him like this was an experience you'd never forget.
"You get me dizzy, oh, you get me dizzy, oh!"
There's a great pause in the lyrics where the guitar, keyboard, and drums play together, increasing the tension of the song. You and Harry take off towards opposite ends of the stage, both reveling in the performance for the crowd as you dance and stomp to the beat. Eventually, with a slide down the keys of the keyboard, the instrumental quiets into just the steady beat of the bass line joined by the hi-hats.
You and Harry urge the crowd to clap along as you both return to the middle of the stage to sing together once again. He always said that this portion of the song was one of his favorites to perform, the repeated line from the bridge ending abruptly with the lights going out before flashing back on, the added theatrics of the performance elevating the climax of the song completely. Having rehearsed that Harry would sing the following chorus alone, you let yourself get lost in his gaze as it settles on you.
You stand facing one another behind the mic stand, once again singing more to one another rather than to the crowd. You step closer towards him as the lyrics progress, nearly chest to chest now with your voices sharing one another's mics. "I had a few, got drunk on you and now I'm—"
Before you can sing the last word of the line and the lights can blink out as rehearsed, Harry leans forwards and captures your mouth in a hungry kiss. The crowd erupts with screams as the lights above the stage go dark.
You can feel rather than hear him say the words "I love you" against your lips and you have just enough time to repeat them back to him before the drums and guitar pick the beat up once again, the lights flashing back on brightly. He moves away and continues to sing the chorus that follows as if nothing had happened. You're a bit stunned, not having prepared for his relationship-revealing public display of affection to happen during your performance of his song but it was perfect and he knows it. Your smile is wide and you can't help but stand rooted where you are and laugh at what has just finally happened.
"If you go out tonight, I'm going out 'cause I know you're persuasive," he sings, smirking at you while you blush across from him.
You join him in singing the last lines, your right hand joining his left hand where everyone can see your fingers entwine.
"You got that something, I got me an appetite, now I can taste it. We're getting dizzy, oh, we're getting dizzy, oh!"
You urge the crowd with a waving hand to join in and they do, singing along with you and Harry. "La da da da da! You get me dizzy, oh, you get me dizzy, oh!"
The drums and guitar end the song on five quick beats and the crowd erupts once again in screams. You immediately jump towards Harry, throwing your arms around his neck in a close embrace. His hands wrap around your waist to hold you close, and you can feel him smile where his face is pressed close to your jaw.
"How was that?" he asks, chuckling against you.
"It was perfect, you're perfect. Thank you, H. For everything."
"Can take you on a proper date now, yeah? Wanna show my girl off to the world."
"Yes, please!" You can't wipe the smile from your face as he sets you down and Harry continues to beam at you as the crowd continues screaming, reeling from your shared performance.
Harry nudges you gently before turning back to them, lifting his and your arms high in the air and leading you in bending for a bow. He steps away from you and turns, opening his arms wide to you for the crowd to praise and you laugh, tearing up at his gesture and the overwhelming emotions of the performance while you take another bow just for yourself.
He pulls you into another hug and you can't help but angle your face up towards him, wordlessly asking for another very quick, very public kiss.
He glances down at you, smiling. "You're gonna love this now, aren't you?"
"Course I am. love showing them you're mine."
He leans down to peck your forehead, your nose, and finally, your lips, as the crowd goes wild. "Love showing them you're mine. You've got a show to finish, love. Go kill it."

Spooked Teleportation-Todoroki
Tumblr media
Full Masterlist MHA Masterlist
+Y/N has a ghost quirk that she does not have complete control over yet. Y/N is a relatively quiet girl that has been able to get close to Todoroki from the beginning. One day, during training, Todoroki spooks her accidentally causing her quirk activate out of her control, teleporting them somewhere. This cause her to over use her quirk.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Oi! Spectra! Do you have your part of the project on you?” Bakugo yelled across the room. I lifted my head up from Todoroki’s desk and thought for a second.
“Yeah I do.”
“Good. I need to check on something. Give ‘em to me.” He walked over to my desk with his hand out. I shared a look with Todoroki who rolled his eyes.
“Give me a second.” I turned around and dug into my bag before finding it. I handed it to him and he turned around, walking away. I chuckled before turning back to Todoroki. He was working on his homework and I just watched as he wrote stuff down.
“What?” He asked, darting his eyes up to look at me before looking back at his paper. I shool my head meaning nothing. He nodded before focusing on his work. I was naturally quiet so he accepted my answer. I was also really bored so I started to mess with my ‘ghost magic’ as Bakugo calls it, making a pen float around.
“Doot do-do.” I messed around. I made the pen do tricks in the air, not really paying attention to much else.
“L/N.” Todoroki called gently. I jumped with an eep and the pen dropped right on his paper, where he was writing. I covered my mouth as he immediately stopped writing. He looked up at me again through his eyelashes.
“Sorry.” I yelped. A smile broke out on his face before he chuckled setting down his pencil.
“Having fun?” He asked, leaning on his arms looking at me. I smiled, dropping my hands into my lap. I laughed, blushing and nodding. He shook his head before picking up the pen and holding it out to me. I nodded and he dropped his hand, the pen staying in midair. “There we go. It’s good practice.”
“Thanks.” I leant on his desk again and with both went back to what we were doing. I was lost in my playing until someone else spoke up.
“You know it’s sexy when you use your quirk.” Mineta popped up next to me. I yelped, sending the pen flying and looking down at him.
“Hey, who threw that?” Kaminari yelled.
“I mean it’s really, really attractive.” I looked at him appalled and embarrassed. He was staring at me intently. I looked between him and Todoroki before disappearing from the room completely. I teleported to the hallway, shaken and uncomfortable. I heard yelling in the room from Bakugo, Kirishima, and Todoroki before I heard Mineta scream in fear.
“Maybe you should chill for a minute or two.” I heard Todoroki saw and I covered my mouth to not burst out laughing.
“You can come back in, L/N.” I looked to my left and saw Aizawa-sensei stepping out of the doorway. I nodded and ghosted back in. I laughed when I saw Mineta ‘chilling’ in a block of ice. I looked at Todoroki but he was just casually sitting there doing his work again.
“Wow.” I whispered before turning towards Kami. “Sorry, Kaminari. I didn’t meant to chuck the pen at you.” His head popped up and whipped around towards me.
“It’s alright. I understand!” He said before tossing the pen back to me.
“Okay class. Go get changed and head out to the training fields.” Aizawa instructed. We all started putting away our things before getting up to leave. “Oh and Todoroki, you may want to thaw out Mineta so he can join us. Just a thought…a mild suggestion.”
“Alright.” A thud of his body hitting the floor made a wet plop. He groaned out before getting up himself.
The rest of our day was spent with one on one training or by ourselves. Back and forth really. I was just happy Mineta was leaving me alone. I spent most of time by myself since I still didn’t completely trust my quirk. I was standing messing with my energy beam, ray thingy. I was get frustrated and tired. I took a breath to try and calm myself. I was just about to try again when a hand was placed on my shoulder.
“L/N, do you need…”
“Ahh!” I got scared and accidentally teleported. As soon as I landed and was solid again, I felt the other person was still with me. I felt them stumble before gaining their balance just as I collapsed.
“Hey, hey.” Someone caught me before I hit the ground. My head was spinning and I couldn’t see straight but I could see red and white hair. Todoroki moved us both to the ground, setting my head in his lap. My vision and head cleared but exhaustion set in. “Are you alright?”
“I’m exhausted. I just…” I set my hands on my head. I couldn’t form words very easily right now. I looked up at him and saw worry in his eyes.
“Okay, sh. Just rest.” He said, looking around us. I did too to see that we were nowhere near the school.
“Shit, I’m sorry Todoroki.” I apologized, silently chiding myself.
“Stop.” He said. I looked up at him surprised and confused. “I know what you are thinking and you need to stop. This isn’t your fault and it’s not that bad.”
“Yes it is. I should have been able to control my quirk.” I said sitting up. I got up to my feet but my knees gave and my head spun again. I felt Todoroki grab me before I could even start to fall. He brought me down into his lap, setting my head on his shoulder.
“Stay down.” He said before checking me over entirely. “What has you so exhausted? I have never seen you act this way over your quirk like this.”
“I have never teleported more than myself. You with me took a lot out of me I guess.” I told him feeling my whole body grow heavier with the exhaustion. “Todoroki, I’m feeling really tired.”
“Rest.” That was all he said before he pulled out his phone. I didn’t completely listen but could tell he was calling Aizawa-sensei. I was half asleep when I heard someone walk up on us. I opened my eyes to see Aizawa kneeling next to us.
“Are you both alright?” He asked. Todoroki answered and explained what had happened. They both helped me sit up before standing. I held onto both of their arms as they walked me to a car. My exhaustion wasn’t getting any better and before I knew it I was passing out, falling into Todoroki.
I awoke some time later in my own bed in my dorm. I yawned as I sat up looking around. I noticed the night sky out my balcony doors. Another thing I noticed was that the balcony doors were open, curtains billowing in the breeze. I got up and took a few steps towards it to see the bi-colored haired boy leaning against the railing.
“Todoroki?” He looked over his shoulder at me.
“You’re awake.” He turned towards me as I came out. “How are you feeling?”
“I have a small headache but otherwise I’m okay.” I said, leaning on the railing myself. I took a big breath looking up into the stars. “Thank you for helping me. That was kind of scary.”
“It was my pleasure. You are my friend. I would never let anything come to hurt you.” He said. I smiled before jumping at the sound of Bakugo’s voice yelling.
“DEKU!”
“My god.” I looked at Todoroki with a chuckle. “He is on the other side of the building and two floors up yet we can still hear him. That’s hilarious.”
“Very much. I have to hear that all the time though.”
“Oh that’s right. Your room is above his.” I sucked in air and gave him an apologetic look. “Sorry.” He shrugged.
“I have learned to block him out quite easily.” He said before we fell into comfortable silence, listening to the sound of the city beyond the school gates. “You scared me today. I thought you were seriously hurt. I was…worried.” He reached out and grabbed my hand, pulling me closer. His gaze was on my hand while he rubbed circles with his thumb.
“You were worried about me?” I said.
“Mm-hmm.” He nodded. He held my hand tighter. “I care very much for you.” He brought my hand up and kissed it. “So much.”
“Todoroki…” I whispered before smiling and blushing. I looked down before setting my head on his shoulder. I threaded my fingers threw his to intertwine our hands.
“I should get back to my room and let you rest some more. I just wanted to make sure you were alright.” He said softly. I sighed.
“Alright but…can we stay like this for a little longer?” I looked up at him through my eyelashes. He smiled.
“Of course but only for a little longer.” He said wrapping his arm around me. “It’s a little cold out. I need to keep you warm.” He said as I tucked my head under his chin. I sighed and nodded, relaxing into his arms.todo
I just discovered your blog, and I'm in LOVE with your writing! I'm completely obsessed with Familiar, so if it's not to much to ask, could you write a continuation? Thank you so much, your snippets and prompts are greatly appreciated!!
Familiar - Pt 2
First part here
On a scale of one to ten, this was either a -2 or a 12 on the good idea scale. Hero double-checked the address Villain had sent her before looking back at the tiny house. The paint was peeling, steps were rotting and that roof was definitely of the leaking sort. Somehow, she had expected Villain to live on the rich side of town.
When he had invited her over to work on their assignment, her thoughts had been torn between screaming trap and find some evidence. The second side won. If there wasn’t anything in there to prove who Villain really was… Well, she’d have to find another way of getting proof to show the authorities. She knocked and noted the cracked windows to her side. After a few seconds, Villain opened the door.
“Hey, I’m glad you could make it. Come on in.” He led her down the musty hall towards a suspiciously normal bedroom. “Thanks again for making the trek all the way over here. My mom hasn’t been doing too well recently, and I’m trying not to leave her alone for too long.”
“Of course, I get it.” Hero let her eyes trail over the spartan room. The only furniture was a bed and two chairs beside a fold-up table covered with books and scribblers. Funny, the number of times Villain escaped from her with stolen cash made her think he’d at least have better furniture. Or a safe to put the money in. Maybe it was hiding in the closet? Although in this neighbourhood, keeping money lying around might not be the brightest idea. “It’s good that you’re taking care of her.”
He nodded, avoiding her gaze and moving his stuff from the table to the floor. “Hopefully, this next surgery will be the one that works.”
“Yeah, it’s tough watching people you love go through painful things. My sister has a heart problem right now, and it’s terrifying to watch her energy come and go.” Shut up! Stop telling him personal things. “Yeah.” She finished lamely.
Their gazes locked in understanding. Hero was the first to break away. “Ready to start the pain?”
They worked on the assignment in silence for a while. Honestly, there was probably a special punishment designed for whoever invented assignments over ten pages long. This just wasn’t fair. Hero sat back, running a hand through her hair. “I think this is karma's way of punishing me for not reading the textbook.”
His lips quirked. “There’s a textbook for this class? That would’ve been helpful to know at the start of the semester.”
“Want to know how tired I was at the beginning of the semester? I can’t even remember choosing my classes,” she pulled a hand down her face. “I think I just closed my eyes and pointed at the screen.”
“You could have been in differential calculus. Or worse, accounting.”
“Or Phys Ed. Did you know our university has a course devoted to badminton?”
Villain laughed. “What a racket. To think, I could have spent time swinging my arm around and gotten credit for it.”
“But then you’d be missing out on the glories of this assignment.”
“And a friend.”
Oh nope. Big nope. Wait, Hero reconsidered. Were they friends?  They did chat after class and had studied a few times together, but that didn’t mean- wait. Huh. Time to deflect with awkward humour and process these feelings later. “I thought you saw me as a role model, but that’s cool too. I’ll just have to find a new lackey.”
“And here I thought you were friends with me for my brilliance and good looks.”
She felt her cheeks begin to burn. “Yep, it’s all for your looks. If you seduce our professor, then we don’t have to do this assignment anymore.”
Villain rubbed his chin. “I’ve never seduced a professor before. Would I have to wear a sweater vest?”
“And a tweed jacket. It’s the only way.” Her fingers twitched, and she was suddenly very aware of him. The light hitting his hair, the way his lips curled when he was amused… Bad, very bad. This is your official ABORT MISSION alert. Find some evidence on the dangerous criminal and get out of there. She cleared her throat. “I’m parched. Could I get some water?”
Villain nodded, standing and leaving the room. Hero leapt out of the chair the moment the door shut behind him.  Her eyes latched on the only place one could hide anything in the sparse room - the closet. She yanked it open, feeling her heart speed up at the sound of Villain opening a cupboard in the kitchen and turning on the tap.
The closet was small and impressively dull. Clothes and boxes littered the tiny  shelves, with no signs of the files or weapons she was looking for. A flap of a familiar fabric dangling from one of the top boxes caught her eye. Bingo. Hero gingerly reached to feel the consistency, making sure she wasn’t wrong before bringing the authorities in, and accidentally bumped an elbow against the side of the closet. The box plummeted from its precarious placement and met the ground with a thump. No! She scrambled to pick up the box and the spilled-out uniform when a movement behind made her pause.
Villain stood in the doorway, hand clenched around a glass of water. His eyes darted to the clothes on the ground. “What are you doing?” he asked quietly.
Hero’s throat went dry. She tightened her grip on the clothes and tried to look surprised. “S-something fell in your closet, so I opened it to check what it was.”
“Huh,” Villain said. “That’s unfortunate.”
He knelt, gently taking his outfit from her hands and placing it back in the box. “You weren’t supposed to see this.”
“Clearly.”  Hero swallowed and prepared to run if he attacked. Worst case scenario, she had beat him before and could do it again. Theoretically. “I didn’t mean to-“
“I know.” A familiar calculation crept across his face, making her hands shake. Villain sat across from her and blocked the only exit, placing the cup of water between them. She felt trapped against the closet.
“You know, if this had happened a month ago, I would have killed you without a second thought,” he said mildly. “Guess you’re lucky.”
A horrifying reminder that she was not dealing with her awkward classmate anymore. “What are you going to do instead?”
Villain shrugged, seeming far too calm for the situation. “I don’t know yet. Talk, I guess?”
“I won’t tell anyone.” Hero said, lying through her teeth.
“Unfortunately, I’m too old to believe the promises of others so easily.” He trailed his fingers through the thin carpet, tracing patterns through the material. “Even yours. The stakes are just too high.”
“What’s even worth all the stealing and destruction?” she asked quietly. “Why do you do it? “
The  fingers paused. “It started out as one job. My mom needed treatment, and we didn’t have the money to pay for it. Then one treatment turned into two.” He shook his head. “Before I knew it, I was on the city’s most-wanted list.”
Her shoulders tensed. “Will you stop when the treatments are finished?”
“There have been other benefits to criminal activity.” Villain ducked his head, cheeks turning pink. “Lots of amazing people to meet. I haven’t decided yet.”
She leaned against the wall beside the closet, feeling safer with something solid against her back. “I don’t know if meeting people through crime is worth a lifetime in jail.”
He gave a bitter laugh. “You’d be surprised.”
Hero picked up the forgotten water sitting between them and drank, if nothing else than for the excuse to avoid responding.
His fingers trailed larger patterns in the carpet. “I never wanted you to find out- this is one of the first friendships I’ve made since I started university. I don’t want to lose that. And I don’t want you getting hurt, but this does put me in a tight position. I won’t let you inform the authorities.”
Hero pressed her back further against the wall.
Villain took one look at her wide eyes and softened his tone. “Just don’t tell. If I get one inkling that you’re about to turn me in, then..." he sighed. "Please don’t make me choose between you and my mom.”
He would know it was her. Hero didn’t think she could after this. Or fight him, knowing it was for his mom’s medical bills. She pursed her lips, making a highly regrettable split-second decision. “Alright. But only on one condition: you stop once her treatments are done.”
He twitched. “I told you, I haven’t decided yet-”
“I’m making the decision for you.” She tried to sound more confident than she felt. "Deals are much easier to trust than promises.”
“No. I’d miss-” Villain stopped, clenching his jaw. “I can’t let certain people from that life go yet.”
Something clicked. The girl he liked was from his criminal life… Oh gosh, Hero probably knew her. The brunette villain from the southside? The redheaded weapons supplier? Stop getting distracted.
“I trust you. Give it up as soon as you can.” The words slipped out before she could stop them. “For me.” That was even worse. Was it possible to die from a foot in your mouth?
Villain relaxed his shoulders. “Yeah. It’s a deal.” He stuck out a hand and Hero grasped it, shaking firmly and ignoring the sinking feeling in her chest. So like, a 5 on the good idea scale.
I'm okay with a bunch of disorganized rambling honestly 😂. But if I had to narrow it down then I guess I want to know about main and side characters and how they compare to the original?
I know that tumblr is the Prime Site for disorganized rambling, but I have perfectionism issues. But that is a great question, nonnie, and I will be happy to ramble is a slightly less disorganized fashion.
When reading Maximum Ride as a somewhat-formed adult who discovered they enjoy English classes about 3.5 years ago, I noticed that JP, when writing, doesn't understand consistency. At all. Which means, in many ways, I have a free sandbox to work with.
Spoilers for my rewrite WIP, because I strongly believe that if a story would no longer be good if one had spoilers, then it wasn’t a good story in the first place.
I'm trying to keep the backstories the same, plus or minus the scientific method and a few characters (RIP my OCs. I want to bring you back so bad but it wouldn't fit with the thematic narrative). I've mostly kept their (starting) abilities the same, too. Without further ado, I'm going to introduce some WorldBuilding. (If I'm good at nothing else, I'm good at world building)
First off. Logically.
How are they getting Cable?
How are they getting internet?
How are they getting money to eat and stuff?
JP's answer: handwave it off. Sometimes you need to ignore logistics for the sake of plot. This is an answer I'd accept from an author that I like, such as Julie Kagawa, that makes amazing worlds, characters, and narratives that I will happily handwave a few things that wouldn't work in the real world. James Patterson, on the other hand, did not make any of that; he made a cool concept, some good rough-draft characters, and nothing else, and therefore this is an unforgivable sin.
Wasp's answer: They are not getting any of that.
Introducing Cottagecore.
The house is off the grid. Solar Panels and a wind turbine create electricity. They have their own well. They grow their own food, raise livestock for eggs, milk, and wool, and trap fish for meat. They get money through dumpster diving and pawning. They still have to steal half of the necessities they can’t make themselves. They do have a TV, but it can access about three channels on a clear day. Internet is only a thing when they go to the public library.
Giving the flock a background that’s heavy in farming and livestock rearing shores up the plot holes mentioned above, but in my opinion, ties the flock more tightly to the environment, thus giving them something tangible to lose when they have to leave the E-shaped house. Because they’re not just leaving a house and a safety net— they’re leaving their entire way of life with no promise of getting it back. It also gives them a tangible connection to the earth in case I want to actually pursue the global warming themes.
Main Characters
Maximum “Max” Ride (Birthname: nonexistent)
First off, I'm letting her be Latina, James Patterson.
In the original, Max was very much the headstrong, independent, action girl. Leaning into Strong Female Character (TM), but overall she had a strong, solid foundation and enough character consistency through the first three books for me to not have to just make an entire new character. However, I felt that she was, in some ways, a bit too Action-Girl and Strong and Capable. Yes, Max is incredible and competent, but she’s also fourteen. She’s a child.
In the rewrite, Max’s character is still headstrong, independent, capable, and sometimes not the best at listening to others. All of that’s the same. But she’s that way not because of girlboss energy, but because there’s no one else to do it. She doesn’t want to lead, necessarily. She wants to get some rest and let someone else handle the problems life keeps throwing at her. But she knows if she did that, the responsibility of leader would fall to Fang and Iggy, and she can’t ask that of them. She doesn’t want to place that burden on anyone else (Look, there’s a reason I chose Ayano’s Theory of Happiness as one of her signifier songs, okay?). Her narrative is very much centered around burden, and also around loss. She lost her cultural heritage when she was taken away from her birth family, she lost her childhood to being a leader, she lost a good deal of her friends to the school (RIP my OCs), she lost Jeb, and then she lost her stability. And she’s going to lose a lot more before the end of the story. So a lot of her character arc deals with learning that there are some things she can’t fix, some things that can’t be recovered. She can’t get the E-shaped house back. She can’t get her Little Baby Angel back, even after they rescue her. She can’t get her friends back from the school. And instead of working so hard to recover those or find something to replace them, she has to learn to live with that sense of loss and move on with her life without feeling guilty for leaving things behind. And she has to learn that asking for help and sharing her burden is selfish or weak.
Other changes I made that don’t necessarily fit into her narrative arc, but you asked for rambling so rambling you shall get:
Max hallucinates, because mental illness is also a prominent theme in the rewrite. She doesn’t have a psychotic disorder, but her C-PTSD causes visual/audio hallucinations, especially when she’s stressed or sleep deprived.
Max ends up having a Gender Discovery throughout the story and goes by He/She pronouns eventually. I don’t know when, but it will happen.
As far as genetic modifications/special quirks go, she can fly faster than the rest of the flock, but not 300 miles per hour. She averages about sixty mph with diving speeds of 240. She cannot breathe underwater or shut down her organs on command. She also has the Super Special Power to predict the weather, but that’s not because of genetics, it’s because she has chronic pain in her right arm that gets worse when weather fronts change.
Her favored weapon is her trusty rebar that she picked up from a condemned building. I think she’s going to name it eventually but I don’t know what yet.
Fang (Birth name: Gabriel Xue)
In canon, Fang is characterized in early books by being the “dark, strong, silent type”. He’s probably the most reserved member of the flock, to the point of falling into the Brooding Mystery Man trope in parts of the book. They care a lot, but they’re not the best at conveying that, especially with the younger members of the flock, and at times their high empathy leads them to making mistakes. Despite the high empathy, he’s often compared to a robot due to his lack of expression and external emotions.
Well, first change is that they’re not a man, so jot that down—
If Max’s narrative is centered around burden and loss, I would probably say that Fang’s is centered around humanity and moving on. None of the flock was treated as human while in the school, but Fang was more often than not treated like a wild animal due to “behavioral issues”, and therefore had and continues to have a difficult time considering themselves real and alive, let alone human. This manifests through a several different ways— where in canon Fang definitely had a ‘fight’ reaction, in the re-write they have a ‘freeze’ or ‘shut down’ instinct. They’re selectively mute for multiple reasons (including derealization, jaw pain, the fact that they didn’t learn how to speak until they were 10, and genuinely forgetting it’s something they’re capable of), a period of Cotard’s syndrome, and a tendancy towards self-loathing and self-sacrifice. In short, Fang is still halfway stuck in the mindset that most of the flock grew out of when they escaped in the school, and doesn’t know how to move past it.
Much of their character arc revolves around not necessarily seeing themselves as human, but learning to treat themselves as human even when they don’t feel like one (or even feel real), and knowing that just because they don’t feel human all the time doesn’t mean anyone else can treat them the same. They never start easily expressing their emotions, and they’re always going to be selectively mute, but they learn to accept that those aspects of themself aren’t character flaws or signs that they’re sub-human.
Other additions to Fang’s character include:
They don’t get their hair cut in New York. It stays long through the entire series. They have the longest hair in the flock by the end of the series, and they can wear it in so many styles.
Fang uses they/it pronouns because themes of reclaiming the weapons used against it and, more importantly, Gender.
They’re actually really good at spelling compared to the rest of the flock, because they and Iggy communicate with Print-On-Palm when they’re nonverbal, and they’re nonverbal for some pretty long stretches of time.
They and Max have... zero romantic tension. At all. There is none. The number of times Max calls them her sibling/little sibling in the first arc alone is staggering, and that will not change.
Igneous “Iggy” (Birthname: Jamsetta “Jamie” Griffiths)
I’ve talked about Iggy before. Canon doesn’t give us much to go off of, but from what’s shown, he’s smart, sarcastic, has sharper edges than Fang and Max, and also has a sizable ruthless streak. So that’s what I have to go off of.
The big difference between Iggy and Fang&Max is that Iggy has a much better memory of the School. Most of the flock have areas (months or years) that they don’t remember, or people that they’ve blocked from their mind, but Iggy... doesn’t. So he’s the one that remembers all of the other AVIAN test subjects that were old enough to have names and identities but died due to complications. Max might have the burden of leadership, but he has the burden of memory. And that has lead to both a massive fucking guilt complex, because why did he survive when they didn’t, and, as mentioned above, a ruthless streak that he doesn’t shy away from.
Which is to say, by the end of the story, Iggy has the highest kill count.
I love, love writing Iggy next to Max and Fang. I love writing Iggy next to Gazzy and Nudge. Because, I say this with all of the love of the world, but Iggy is not a good person. He is loyalty and love incarnate, and the world can burn down if he and his siblings are safe. Max and Fang will always try to save as many people as they can. They will wonder what’s wrong with them the first time they kill and don’t have a mental breakdown about it. They are good in a way that Iggy is not. He’s okay with killing Erasers. He’s okay with killing humans. He’s okay with killing people who might not necessarily deserve it, if they show themselves as a threat or are simply in the blast radius. He knows perfectly well that most of those Erasers he’s murdering are four and five and he is okay with that, because a lot of the AVIANs were that age when they died. (Yeah, in the rewrite it’s not Fang who has an issue with Ari; it’s Iggy who wants the 7-year-old wolf-boy dead.)
And this is, of course, juxtaposed with Iggy being really, really good with Nudge and Gazzy (especially in the beginning). Because, again, he actually remembers being a child. He remembers a lot of kids that died and is therefore fiercely protective of the kids that didn’t, as well as fiercely protective of the innocence that he never got. So he’s the one that cooks their favorite foods when they’re having a bad day, always makes time when they want to talk about something, and convinces Max to let them go to that toy store in New York because, yeah, he Max and Fang aren’t kids. They never were. But Nudge, Gazzy, and Angel can be. (And if he has to be a murderer to preserve that, then he’s perfectly okay with that.)
He and Angel don’t get along very well, though. The telepath doesn’t like hanging out with the person with the most clear memories of the school.
Other additions:
Iggy is trans and says trans rights
He also has paranoid episodes, because C-PTSD. Sometimes they’re very helpful. Sometimes they are not.
I actually decided that he’s one of the flock that doesn’t meet their parents. I know in canon he did, but I always found that very clunky because it didn’t add to his character. He was one of the characters who, until it was convenient for the plot, seemed to care the least about his family. I’d much rather give that to a character whose arc would benefit from it.
Iggy! Gets! Older Sibling Rights! Seriously, he’s two months younger than Fang, he is just as capable.
Iggy does not know braille because Jeb decided it wasn’t necessary for him to know. Iggy is also the best speller in the flock, because Print-on-Palm was the only way to talk to Fang for a solid year. Yes he mocks everyone over this.
Iggy is the only member of the flock that enjoys swimming and can take into the air from water. Everyone else in the flock is incredibly jealous.
Nudge (Birthname: Monique Robinson)
If Iggy is defined by his memories, Nudge is his polar opposite. She was seven when she left the School, but she has next to no memories of it. She is missing a lot of time in the first year she escaped. And that causes... a lot of things. It makes her feel disconnected from her older siblings, it gives her the ability to function in society in a way the other’s can’t, it lets her feel less grief over the ones that didn’t make it and she doesn’t remember, it makes her feel guilty that she doesn’t remember what she’s old enough to know.
Basically, in order for me to keep the character of Nudge as I saw her (more extroverted, not afraid of the world, fascinated with humans like her siblings aren’t, desiring to fit in instead of isolate), I had to put a little bit of distance between her and the flock. Of course, she loves them— that will in no way change— but she’s old enough that she should remember the school (and her dead friends) unlike Gazzy and Angel, but she can’t, and she very much fears forgetting the flock if anything happens to them. So she’s trying desperately to keep the flock close and wants desperately to experience the world at the same time, and doesn’t know what to do when she can’t have both. That’s her biggest character conflict throughout the series, along with that in-between area where she’s not quite where her older siblings are but understands so much more than Gazzy and Angel, and where she stands in that.
So yeah. Nudge’s journey is that in looking for belonging in the world, in her family, and in herself.
This is why she’s one of the ones that gets to find her parent, James Patterson.
Other additions include:
She never straightens her hair. Never. Her resources at the E-shaped house aren’t perfect, but she still has learned how to take care of her hair and has a few styles she cycles through.
She becomes the default person Max sics on people when the flock is trying to befriend them. Also their de-facto diplomat around strangers.
As in canon, she does take some time away from the flock to expirience ‘normal life’. This does not last long due to the stress of being separated from her siblings/not being able to help them and [REDACTED]
Nudge is... not the only person in her head. I’m not focusing on it much because she doesn’t actually know and neither does the flock (I don’t know if they ever figure it out during the series, either), but she has dissociative identity disorder. She’s not aware of her alter(s?). Her alter isn’t super aware of her, either.
The alter that I’ve developed is named Oxy and is not super aware of the outside world. In her eyes, she’s still seven and they’re still at the School. She would not recognize the body as her own if she looked in a mirror.
Nudge actually leaves the flock for a while to pursue her dream of living a normal life. She deserves it. She learns how to make muffins and the basics of software development. These things are unrelated.
Gasman (Birthname: No first name, surname “Falk”)
Honestly, writing Gazzy is kind of hard for me. Partially because I’m not great at writing kids, and partially because I feel like he’s a pretty surface-level character in-series that... isn’t super compelling in canon. But even if that’s the case, I try to treat all of my characters with respect, so here we go. In my rewrite, he escaped when he was four, which was half a lifetime ago for him, so his memories are ill-defined. Therefore, he managed to circumvent a lot of the trauma that the rest of the kids have, and not in the way Nudge did, which is by creating an elaborate blockage in her memories.
Which means Gazzy... really doesn’t know how to deal with all of this traumatic stuff happening. So much of his development turns out to be a coming-of-age narrative. Learning how to deal with the horrors of what his siblings grew up with. Learning the fears that they had the entire time. Losing his innocence when everyone around him never had it in the first place, and being so terribly alone because of it. Because, really, how can you explain such a deep loss to people who never had what he had? How can they help in a way that matters?
Also, relationship-wise, I’m slowly deteriorating the relationship between him and Iggy. Slowly. Or, changing it, at least. Gazzy hero-worships Iggy in-series, and for good reason, because Iggy is super cool, especially in the eyes of an eight-year-old, and especially when Iggy has taken care to cultivate parts of his behaviors to be child-friendly. Part of growing up is seeing the flaws in your heroes, and Gazzy has to learn how to deal with it. End of the series Gazzy is much less closer to Iggy than beginning of the series Gazzy, and neither of them are really okay with that, but they learn to live with it, because that’s really all they can do.
Notes:
I’m keeping the mimickry! It plays a bit of a bigger role because that’s how Gazzy learned to talk. I’m debating whether or not he has his own voice or if he just borrows the flock’s as he sees fit. He also uses it to scream really loudly and occaisonally burst the eardrums of Erasers.
At one point he cosplays as Jessica Jones. No you don’t get any more context than this.
He has a horrible sense of fashion.
I’m changing his name eventually because it sucks. He’s either going to change it to Gannet, Garrison, or Ivy Mike temporarily, and permanently to Zephyr. (I never said I was going to make his name GOOD, because he’s eight, but it’s changing. You’re welcome.)
Angel (Birthname: No first name, surname “Falk”)
It’s just... a completely different character, at this point. I’ve changed so many things about her in an attempt to make her consistent and act like a six-year-old and work in the whole “telepath before she has a solid sense of identity”, so it’s a different character. Also, I’m tired of writing coherently or in paragraphs, so have some interesting facts.
She has epilepsy! Super severe epilepsy! I think she might also develop juvenile MS in the future because her brain has so many scars from being a fucking six-year-old telepath. There’s no way she could get out of that unscathed.
She has more memories of the school than Gazzy, but only because she keeps accidentally reading the minds of Max, Fang, and Iggy. On a related note, she interacts with Iggy as little as possible.
The mind reading means that she has a hard time developing as a normal child with a normal sense of identity or reality. She can’t tell how much people are individual people and how much they’re just extensions of her. Conversely, she can’t tell how much of herself is actually her instead of the thoughts/opinions/identities of someone else. It’s... kinda fucked? But also super not-her-fault.
She’s albino because white wings. Also, because I thought it was cool. This also means that her vision sucks, though. Also she has the biggest straw sunhat and the most stylish sunglasses a six-year-old can have.
She’s responsible for Max shaving her hair off.
She has the highest swear count because I think it’s funny. She’s the only person allowed to say the fuck word in writing. Everyone else can only say ‘hell’ and the occasionally ‘damn’ but she can say whatever she wants for dramatic and comedic value.
She is NOT THE FUCKING VOICE, J*MES P*TTERSON.
Honorable Mentions
Jeb
I’m skipping Jeb because of how little I care about him. He’s a little bitch, next character.
Ari
STILL HASN’T BEEN REVEALED AS AN ERASER. I’ve been writing for 50,000 words and he’s over here saying ‘nope nope not yet, not dramatic enough’. He’s had speaking lines but has refused to make himself known to Max. I am so frustrated with this seven-year-old wolf-child that I’ve already considered how I would kill him, if I decide I want to kill yet another child in my writing.
So, my main thoughts for Ari is that he... really just drew the short end of the stick in every possible way. While Jeb didn’t sign him up for Eraser expirimentation, he didn’t do anything to stop it, and pretty much cut his losses when he realized this expiriment made a wreck of his ‘perfect, unflawed’ son, because Jeb doesn’t consider children of any species to actually be humans. So, Ari really hates his dad, which makes things complicated, because he also really loves his dad and really wants his approval.
Which means that he also really hates Max, because she’s the child that always got Jeb’s time and attention, even when Ari was human. I think, on some level, he knows that trying to tear Max down to a less-favored level isn’t actually going to help his situation— infighting for the love of an abusive parent won’t make them any less abusive— but he’s also seven, and his development is already severely stunted due to becoming an Eraser, and he doesn’t see ‘leaving ITEX’ as an option like the Flock does. ITEX is his everything. It’s all he’s ever known, and they tell him he’s doing the right thing, and he wants them to love him. He wants his father to love him. He knows that if he ever questions ITEX, his father will never love him. So it must be his older sister that’s ruining his life and being a horrible child, and once Ari drags her back down to his level, Jeb will realize who the best child is and love him properly again.
Ari, on an even deeper level, does care for Max quite a bit, because she’s his older sister and he wants that to mean something in a way that ‘Jeb being his father’ obviously doesn’t. He wants what she made for herself, and he hates the Flock because she loves them and obviously doesn’t love him.
Ari, if anything, is the product of neglect, and both loves and hates everyone who shows a chance of caring about him. And he’s seven, so he can’t notice these patterns, let alone break them.
So. Notes!
He doesn’t look like an adult. I thought that was gross and unnecessary. He’s seven, but he looks closer to thirteen or fourteen. Still young enough that he looks like every Eraser’s little brother, and the Erasers high-key treat him like it.
On a related note, he’s the only Eraser who can talk. The others don’t have the mental capacity or vocal structure to replicate human speech, but they can understand language (at about the level of a two or three year old) and are very good at nonverbal communication. This is why Ari managed to climb the ranks despite only having three years of “service” and also looking like a tween.
He doesn’t have an expiration date because that is SUCH a stupid plot point.
I’m giving him a chainsaw! I don’t know how, I don’t know when, but he deserves to have a chainsaw and GODDAMN I will give it to him.
Emergency and Gene
The OCs that I love and also killed pre-series. They don’t have any scenes, because they’re dead, but their deaths greatly effected Max, Fang, and Iggy, and they are very commonly referenced. Their voices are probably Max’s most common hallucination, to the point where she sometimes pretends they’re ghosts that she can talk to. They’re not ghosts. They’re dead.
Dr. Valencia Martinez
I’m actually keeping her pretty close to canon— loving, supportive, the type of person to take in a gsw victim with minimal questions. The difference is that rather than kindness fueling her actions, it’s incredible guilt. She has three goals surrounding Max: Give her as much support in any way she can, teach her as much about chicane culture as possible, and never let Max know that she’s her birth parent.
(She’s probably going to fail at AT LEAST two of those, but it’s the thought that counts.)
Notes:
She has a pet fox named Robin Hood that she rescued from an exotic animal salesman that got arrested.
I think I’m going to kill her. I don’t know yet, but it’s on the table.
Anne Walker
Y’know, the fake FBI Agent. Who’s not actually a fake in my story because I hated that plot point. She’s genuinely an FBI agent who put the Flock into pseudo-witness-protection in order to build a case against the Institute of Higher Living, accidentally got attached to her prime witnesses, raised them for a few months, realized a [SPOILER] and promptly had to let them get the hell out dodge.
I really like the Anne Walker that lives in my head. She is a VITAL part of the Flock’s development, their mental/emotional recovery, and adding to their safety net to fall back on. She serves them as their first adult role model, and is the first adult to show them what parent/child are supposed to look like from a healthy perspective. Though she has several fuck ups, she becomes someone that the Flock genuinely trusts and loves, which makes it all the more difficult for them to leave when [REDACTED].
Notes:
She and Max do butt heads initially, because Max is paranoid and also afraid of becoming uneeded. This ends up being incredibly important because Max needs to learn how to live and find meaning in life without being the designated Leader/Parent/Big Sister
Anne, at one point, sits the entire flock down to teach them about consent, which was something no one ever talked about with them before. She goes in talking specifically about consent in a romantic/sexual sense (because they’re fourteen and that’s something they need to know), but quickly turns into a full-fledged no, people are NOT allowed to do that to you, what the FUCK.
She’s responsible for giving the flock a laptop. It’s because Angel is online schooled (bc telepathy makes actually learning difficult) and was therefore provided with a computer.
Anne is also allowed to swear, but only when it’s funny.
Michael “Grey” Rivers
Aka Grey from the Sewers Aka GR3Y H47 Aka Mike from the Bronx Aka Gifted Child Syndrome Incarnate Aka Would-be-in-MIT-if-his-parents-weren’t-horrible. He’s my son, your honour.
Basically, his backstory boils down to him being a genius, getting into MIT at 14, his (horrible) parents wanting a perfect child who could “make it out” of the Bronx and represent his family/neighborhood/borough to the world. When he inevitably failed their expectations due to stress, a schizophrenic-spectrum disorder that completely alienated him from the rest of his support network, and refusing to take his psych meds because the side effects were horrible and they made it harder to think (and therefore pass his classes), they kicked him out. He fully intends to go back to MIT when he turns 18 and has control of his finances/scholarships/medication/therapy.
So that’s how the flock meets him.
Mike ends up in a very prominent support role for the flock both in technological persuits (helping them track their parents, helping them get information from ITEX, trying to disable Max’s chip and failing multiple times until it becomes a matter of personal honour—), in helping the older members of the flock figure out how to deal with hallucinations/delusions (because he’s actually been to therapy, unlike them), and in being one of the only people who talks to them and helps them without any ulterior motive. He’s not trying to build a case against ITEX/The Institute of Higher Learning, he’s not double crossing them, he’s not plagued with guilt. He just genuinely wants to help them, and they genuinely want to help him, and that’s their first introduction to a healthy, non-codependent relationship.
My many disorganized notes on Michael Rivers:
He’s from specifically Morris Heights, Bronx, NYC.
He would say that his last name is actually Rivera, but his grandparents changed it to Rivers so it would sound more English, and his family has been in America for so long that he doesn’t know much about any Latino heritage he may or may not have. He identifies as African American, not Afro-Latino. He’s just bitter that his family felt the need to change their surname to have better opportunities in New York.
Nudge aggressively befriends him pretty much the moment she meets him, bullies him into teaching her how to code, and he very quickly adopts her as his pseudo-little-sister.
His delusions in the book seemed to involve government conspiracies, but as that’s the one delusion that is proved correct in the book, I’ve decided it would be best if his delusions and reality intersected a bit less if I don’t want to write him having a manic/paranoid episode in the second scene he has screen time. So his delusions are more based on “none of this is real”, “someone is recording everything I do and setting me up to fail” and “my ill-wishes on people can and will come true if I dwell on them too long.”. Government conspiracies are one of things he is skeptical about because he thinks most conspiracies are either “CIA admitted to this twenty years ago” or “antisemitism”.
He’s taking online free college classes that don’t actually give him any college credit, but they have good information and help him feel like he’s working towards something. He plans to double major in computer sciences and electrical engineering, minor in marine biology. He’s wanted to join NOAA since he was twelve and he is nothing if not stubborn.
There you go. These are my characters, now. I have custody.
Damsels, Chapter Eight: They Don’t Want to be Found
By SisterSpooky1013 / Read previous chapters here
Rated E / Tagging @today-in-fic
Mulder calls in to work the next day, too sleep deprived and mentally exhausted to function. After sleeping until nearly noon, he gets back in his car and returns to Philly. He checks into a hotel that’s just a few blocks from the club and then spends the next several hours trying to watch TV, trying to read, and jacking off picturing Scully topless. A short time later, he jacks off again, this time imagining what he’ll see tonight.
He isn’t really sure what he’s doing or why he’s here. The best excuse he can cook up is that she doesn’t have a weapon and he’s protecting her, but realistically he knows she can take care of herself. Is it really just perversion, that he wants to see her…exposed? What will he say if she spots him? He can imagine her level of mortification if she knew he was here, that he’d seen her, and he feels guilt churn in his gut. She might never forgive him for this.
He knows it’s wrong, but he can’t seem to stop himself from going back. He has to see her again.
Scully had lay awake for hours after Angel left, thinking about what had happened, wondering how it happened in the first place. She’s on a case, how stupid could she be? What if it comes to light that she’s become involved with a witness in the case? She might be suspended. At least then maybe they’d never ask her to do something like this again. What if Mulder finds out? Would he feel betrayed somehow? Would it turn him on?
Somewhere around 6 am, she had finally caved in and slid her hand down the front of her panties, groaning when she felt how wet she was. She swirled her finger around her clit, using her own arousal as lubricant, and imagined what might have happened if Angel’s phone hadn’t rung. Would Angel have touched her? With her hands, or her mouth? Maybe both. Would she have touched Angel? She was approaching the brink just thinking about it. She stopped suddenly, remembering something, and grabbed the bullet vibrator from her bedside table, switching it on and pressing it to her clit as she plunged the middle finger of her other hand as far inside herself as she could reach. Within 30 seconds she was unravelling, images of Angel and Mulder dancing in her head as her walls clamped tightly around her finger. Finally, she had slept.
She manages to sleep until nearly three in the afternoon again, then spends the day getting her nails done, reading, and devising a plan for how she might look through the files in that closet. Without knowing what’s in them, she has no way of gaging whether Ricky is likely to notice if she takes a few at a time and returns them later. Worse still, Lexie is working tonight and that gives any risk she takes the potential to blow the whole investigation. She’s positive that given one more red flag, Lexie will sing like a canary. The silver lining is that Angel won’t be at work for the next three days, so they can get some space from what happened between them.
The evening is mostly business as usual, and she’s a bit horrified to realize that this is becoming as dull and predictable as any other job. She lets her mind wander while she flexes and rolls over horny married men, wondering what Mulder is up to, whether he’s worried about her or even misses her. Part of her wonders if he might realize that his life is less complicated without her, and that he prefers it that way. She feels an ache in her chest, a bit further north than she has grown accustomed to, and realizes how much she misses him.
When he enters the club, she’s at the bar. Half her torso is resting on the bar top as she shouts to be heard by the bartender, who’s laughing at whatever she’s saying. The position she’s in pops her barely covered ass out prominently behind her and his eyes go big at how exposed she is, and how comfortable she seems with it. Her bare breasts are smushed against the lacquered countertop and he feels his cock twitch thinking about how hard her nipples will be when she stands up. Unfortunately, it would be too risky to stick around and find out, so he tugs his ball cap lower and finds a table in the back. The dancers never seem to come back here for some reason.
He keeps his head trained towards one of the other dancers at all times, while his eyes follow Scully’s every move. If he knows one thing, it’s that Scully can feel his eyes on her, so he needs to be careful. His disguise is painfully basic and all it would take is one solid look for her to know it’s him. He watches her give a lap dance to a blushing young woman, a soft smile on her face the whole time, and he can’t decide if he’s more turned on or touched by how hard she’s working to make the woman feel comfortable. The aching hard-on in his jeans suggests the former.
This time he’s mentally prepared for her stage set, and also realizes she can barely see beyond the tip rail with all the stage lights on her, so he lets himself enjoy it. He’s known from the moment he met her that Scully is beautiful, sexy, incredible in every way imaginable, but he never could have imagined her moving like this. She’s so graceful and captivating. He lets himself block out all the other jerks who are leering at her, stuffing bills into her underwear, and just watches her. His Scully. She’s ethereal.
“Seems like you’ve found your ATF,” a voice to his left startles him from his reverie.
“Huh?” he turns to see the same waitress who’d served him last night, clad in a fishnet body suit.
“You were here last night, right? You like Desi?”
He panics. “No! I mean, yes. But, don’t send her over here or anything.”
She nods in understanding. “You like to watch. That’s cool, whatever floats your boat, man. Can I get you something to drink?”
“Yeah, can I get a Captain and Coke?” He walked here, why not enjoy himself, right?
Four drinks for him and ten lap dances for her later, he stumbles into the balmy night and back to his hotel room where he jacks off again. Twice.
Everyone is trickling out slowly at the end of what has been a busy shift. Scully takes her time counting her tips, sharing a cut with her bird dog and the bartender on shift tonight. While she would not say that she likes working here by any stretch of the imagination, her coworkers at the club are her only source of socialization and (with the exception of Lexie) she truly enjoys their company. She’s helping one of the custodial staff, a wiry young man they called Don Juan, put up the chairs on the club floor so he can mop when Ricky approaches her.
“Desi, can I see you in my office, please?” He has a somber demeanor that concerns her.
“Um, sure, of course.” She bids the young man farewell and follows Ricky down the hall. He closes the door behind them and she feels her heart start to race.
Ricky sits down behind his desk and motions for her to take a seat across from him. She’s reminded of her first day here and the feelings of fear and anticipation.
“I need to ask you something, Desi, and I want to make sure you don’t mention it to the other girls.”
“Okay,” she responds, taking shallow breaths to obscure the fact that she’s afraid.
“Angel told me what happened.”
Her mouth falls open but no words come out. Is she in trouble for kissing Angel?
“That’s why she was so upset the other night, when you saw her in here. She told me that she’d talked to you about her past a bit,” he shakes his head ruefully. “Some gall those dirtbags have, shaming her for being sexual in any way, then coming to a titty club on the sly.”
She breathes a sigh of relief. “Right, yes, the people who came in. She was very upset. “
“It was really nice of you to spend some time with her after work. Anyway, I gave her a few nights off. She needs a break.”
Scully nods. “You wanted to ask me something?”
“Right! So, Angel is my right hand gal, she helps me with a lot of stuff around here. With her being out, I wanted to ask you to kind of be her backup, if you will.”
For a moment she’s afraid Ricky is asking her to perform some kind of sexual favor, but she recalls that Angel had said he’s gay. “What did you have in mind?” she asks hesitantly.
“Well mostly, I wanted to give you a set of keys for the club. Angel has one, in case something happens to me and I’m not here to open and close the doors, stuff like that.”
A set of keys? Scully feels a flush of adrenaline. “Of course, I can do that.”
“That’d be great, Desi. I know you haven’t been with us all that long, but you seem pretty trustworthy, at least compared to the other girls. Like I mentioned, I’m hoping we can keep this between us, just so there are no hurt feelings from anyone who’s been here longer than you.”
Her heart is pounding with excitement at the opportunity to gain access to those files. “Is there an alarm code or something I should know about?” She recalls a sign on the door for ADT.
Ricky dismisses her concern with a flick of his wrist. “No, nothing like that. I should get one, but I just pilfered those signs from my buddy to scare off vagrants.”
She nods in understanding.
“Ninety-nine percent chance nothing will happen and there’ll be no need, but thanks for being on deck, just in case,” he says as he hands her a playboy bunny shaped keychain with a single key dangling from it.
Scully smiles at him. “I’m more than happy to help.”
After she leaves the club, she first goes home to stash her tips and change into comfortable, dark clothes, and then gets a big cup of coffee and a disposable camera from the 7-11 near her apartment.
By the time she’s lurking in the corner of the club’s parking lot, watching the door, it’s nearly 4am and there’s still a light on inside the foyer. She sips her coffee and waits, shuffling her feet to keep warm. Finally at 4:50, Denny and Ricky emerge, locking the door behind them. After they leave the parking lot, Scully waits another 20 minutes before she creeps around the perimeter of the lot and approaches the door. Glancing around to be sure no one is watching her, she turns the key and steps inside, locking it behind her.
The quiet stillness is eerie in contrast to the throbbing hive of activity it had been earlier in the night and she flicks on her flashlight, making her way to Ricky’s office. She fits the same front door key into the lock and sighs in relief when it turns. Ricky’s security standards aren’t incredibly high, apparently, but in this case it’s to her advantage. She tries the key on the hallway closets just in case, to no avail, and returns to the office. Navigating to his desk, she pulls open drawers quickly, scanning their contents. Nothing is of interest, and she’s disappointed though not surprised that his keys to other areas of the club aren’t in here. That makes things more challenging, but not impossible. She’s spent her days off at the library researching how to pick locks, including buying a lock picking kit and some padlocks at the local hardware store to practice with, and she feels relatively confident she can get this door open without a key. She might just have to be the one to pick the lock next time she and Mulder have the need. She smiles to herself knowing how impressed he’d be.
Back in the hallway, she pulls the small lock picking kit out of her back pocket and kneels in front of the door, the pen light perched between her teeth. She studies the lock and then inserts a torque wrench at the bottom, turning it slightly to put resistance in the direction it will spin when unlocked. From the kit, she selects a straight, flat pick and runs it from back to front at the top of the keyhole a couple times. Next she exchanges it for a pick with a curved end, pushing it as far back and high as she can reach as she holds her ear close to the lock in the stony silence of the hallway. Bumping against the pins inside the lock, she listens and feels for a small click or give that indicates the pin has settled in its unlocked position. She continues this until she counts five pins clicking into place, then removes the pick and turns the torque wrench.
The lock releases with a soft click and she laughs out loud as the door swings open, beyond pleased with herself. Stepping into the closet, there’s enough room for her to close the door behind her and she does so, pulling a cord to turn on the overhead light. Taking stock of the beige bank of file cabinets, she works top to bottom, left to right, and immediately feels her heart sink when the first four drawers she tries are empty. Would this be yet another dead end? When the fifth drawer snicks open, she sees a small set of files hanging towards the back. She quickly checks all the other drawers so she’ll have a good idea of how much material she has to review, but they’re all empty.
She pulls the files out and sits down with them on the floor, setting the disposable camera near her thigh. There are eight folders nestled inside the hanging file, each one with a set of initials on the tab. The first one is marked “G.A.” and inside she finds an intake form, a personal statement that’s filled out by hand, and a release of liability form. The intake form is sparse and includes nearly no identifying information. The name is listed as simply GA and the fields below it include “entry date,” “exit date,” “reason for sheltering,” and “responsible individual.” On the form for GA, the entry and exit date are both a year and a half prior, about six months apart. Reason for sheltering is listed as “threat of violence-domestic,” and the responsible individual reads “brother.” She turns to the second page, which contains GA’s personal statement.
confiding over cuddles
Fandom: Sanders Sides Characters: Logan, Virgil, background Roman & Remus. Rating: Teen & up Relationships: Analogical, both pre-relationship and during the relationship.  Warnings: Language. First scene has mentions of being outed, religious homophobia, the implication of the f-slur having been used (the actual word is never on the page), and could maybe come across as critical of Christianity although I intend it more as critical of the homophobia. All of this is kept vague and not gone into in great detail. In the second scene, there are a couple of lines that are implied to be suggestive, but no other warnings. Word count: 4657
Starlight Universe masterpost
analogical week 2021 start - previous - here - next - masterpost
Summary: Throughout the years, vulnerability has always been easiest for Virgil and Logan while cuddling.
Notes: Day 3 of Analogical Week 2021! @analogicalweek Yes, I’m posting it a day late, but I technically finished it before midnight last night, lol. Takes place in my Starlight Universe, does not need context to read.  Remus uses he/they pronouns in this universe.
part 1 - nightmares “Virgil?” Logan said quietly, looking up from the textbook he’d spread open on the floor of Virgil’s dorm room.
Virgil flinched, startled in spite of the soft tone and not too eager for conversation. “What?” he mumbled, dragging his headphones off one ear. He wasn’t actually listening to anything—he’d put them on to avoid conversation—but apparently now they were having a conversation anyway.
“I’m sorry if I am overstepping, but you don’t seem like you’re doing okay.” Logan looked up at him with wide, earnest dark brown eyes. “If there is anything I can do to help, I would really like to.”
Virgil heaved a sigh, considering his options. He hadn’t had time to cancel their normal study session, and when Logan had picked up on his distress at the beginning of the visit, Virgil had insisted it was fine and Logan didn’t have to leave. Logan had taken him at his word and settled in, sprawling on Virgil’s floor while Virgil curled up on his bed and hugged his pillow, avoiding homework and everything else too, to wallow about—well. The reason he would have canceled if he’d had five minutes’ more notice.
On the one hand, it was kind of personal, and Logan was a good enough friend (not a crush, not a crush, not a crush—) that he’d certainly be understanding if Virgil said he didn’t want to talk about it.
On the other hand, Logan had offered to help, and the opportunity to seek comfort from a pretty, thoughtful boy with nice hair and eyes and lips and hands and—but this wasn’t a crush, so none of that mattered, obviously—well, regardless, it was a tempting opportunity.
“Can I talk about it?” Virgil asked in a voice that came out smaller and more vulnerable than he intended.
Logan nodded at once, closing his textbook and climbing to his knees. “Is it okay if I come up there?”
Virgil nodded, patted the space on the bed beside himself, and scooted over to make room. Logan joined him, clambering onto the bed and laying down beside him with a good few inches of space between them, propping his chin up on his elbows. “What’s up?” he asked, focusing all his attention on Virgil.
This close proximity had the unintended side effect of shorting out Virgil’s brain for a solid three seconds. “Uh.” He tore his eyes away from Logan’s face. “I… so I have this friend, right? He used to be my best friend. When we were kids. I haven’t really talked to him at all in a few years.”
Logan nodded.
“So, uh.” Virgil hesitated, fidgeting with his phone. “I guess somebody outed me to him. And he wasn’t okay about it.”
Logan sucked in a concerned hiss of air, half-reaching for Virgil’s shoulder and stopping himself partway through the motion. “Are you okay?”
Virgil nodded on instinct, thought about it, and then shook his head. “He texted me out of the blue about it and offered to pray for me.” His voice shook. “And I—I told him no thanks, I like being gay.” He swiped aimlessly back and forth on his homescreen, opening a folder of apps and then closing it, just so he had something else to focus on than the words he was saying. “He got mad. Called me a—a, a… you know.”
“Oh my god,” Logan murmured in a hushed, horrified tone, and this time he did put his hand on Virgil’s shoulder, squeezing gently. “I’m so sorry, Virgil.”
Virgil let out a little hiccup of a laugh that held no humor but was a way to avoid bursting into tears. He drew the back of his hand across his eyes. “I blocked his number right before you got here,” he mumbled.
Logan nodded. “Good.”
“But he’s been messaging me on Instagram this whole time,” Virgil added with a grimace. “I haven’t been opening them, but…” Right on cue, a notification banner popped up across the top of his screen, previewing a message that contained more of the same stuff he’d been seeing flash across his screen for the last half hour.
“Block him there too,” Logan said instantly. “He doesn’t deserve your time.”
Virgil brushed at the corners of his eyes, swiping away the tears that were threatening to accumulate. “I—I don’t want to open it,” he admitted, voice cracking. “If I open the app, I know I’m going to read all of the messages, and I don’t want to.”
Logan was already shaking his head. “No, don’t read them, oh my god—please don’t read them, please don’t hurt yourself like that.”
“I don’t want to,” Virgil repeated, burying his face in the bedcovers for just a second to hide the tears he couldn’t quite hold back.
Logan’s hand cautiously crept from his shoulder to his back, where it began rubbing soothing circles between his shoulderblades. “Is there any way I can help?” he asked after a moment, his voice almost calm enough to hide his own distress. “I could block him for you, if you want. That way you wouldn’t have to handle the app at all.”
Virgil considered this. He didn’t like the idea of others going through his phone, ever, full stop. But he really didn’t like the idea of opening the Instagram app himself and seeing the little red notification in the corner and inevitably clicking it against all his common sense and scrolling through the messages, reading them over and over again, and maybe trying to reason with the guy about Virgil’s own humanity, even though all that would do was invite a dozen more paragraphs of hurt to read and internalize and argue about, and it would only turn into a vicious cycle of never-ending emotional damage. Not ideal.
And he trusted Logan. He still didn’t like the idea of handing Logan his unlocked phone, but it was a lot less bad than the idea of pretty much anyone else having that access, and it was probably way less bad than trying to do it himself and just hoping he’d somehow have the willpower to leave well enough alone when he knew he didn’t trust himself to do that.
“Can I watch you do it?” he asked, turning his head to the side so he could make suddenly-tired eye contact.
“Of course,” Logan said gently. “Whatever makes you feel most comfortable.”
Virgil worried at his bottom lip with his teeth for a moment, then unlocked the phone with a quick hard press of his thumb and passed it to Logan, wincing slightly.
“Instagram?” Logan asked, finger hovering over the app and waiting for Virgil’s confirmation.
“Yeah,” Virgil said.
Logan opened the app and, waiting at each step for Virgil’s next instruction, blocked the guy without opening any of the messages sitting in Virgil’s DMs. “Does he have any other accounts?”
“I don’t think so,” Virgil mumbled.
“I’m glad. Are there any other methods he has of contacting you that you’d like to block him on?” Logan offered the phone back.
Virgil accepted it gratefully, his shoulders untensing a little. “I guess Snapchat.” He looked up the account and blocked it. “I deleted my Facebook ages ago.” He drummed his fingers on his lips, thinking. “I don’t have a ton of social media, I think that’s everything.”
Logan nodded, visibly relaxing. “Do you need anything? Any kind of support, or anything?”
“I dunno,” Virgil mumbled. He rolled over onto his back. “It just… it sucks.”
“It really does,” Logan agreed.
Virgil forced out a dry chuckle. “Guess I didn’t need that many friends, anyway,” he said, trying hard to make the situation into something amusing. It didn’t particularly work. “It’s not like most people like me, what’s one less?”
“I like you!” Logan protested, his voice much louder than it had been for the last ten minutes. He froze, looking anywhere but Virgil’s face. “I, I like you a lot. You’re a very good friend,” he added, fidgeting with the cuff of his sleeve, his expression flustered.
Virgil set that aside to overthink for ages later. “Uh. Thanks. You—you too,” he managed.
They were both very quiet for a moment, Logan’s fidgeting only increasing as Virgil chewed anxiously on the inside of his cheek.
“Is there anything you need right now?” Logan asked again, just as the tension between them began to become uncomfortable.
Virgil let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. “I don’t know… are you busy?”
“Not until my next class, which is at noon tomorrow,” Logan assured him.
“I don’t want to be a bother—”
“I enjoy spending time with you, and you are clearly distressed and I’d like to help if I can,” Logan interrupted, “and you are my friend and I care about you very much, and it is not bothering me to ask whatever you want. If I want to say no, I will.”
Well. He had covered all his bases when it came to anticipating Virgil’s hesitations.
“Would you mind staying for a bit?” Virgil blurted. “To help me keep my mind off it? I—I don’t want to be alone. I think too much.”
Logan’s expression softened into something so tender it almost hurt to look at. “Of course,” he agreed easily. “As long as you like.”
“Thank you,” Virgil whispered.
“Anytime.” Logan fidgeted with his sleeve a bit more, not looking at Virgil. “Um. Would you like to cuddle?” he asked hesitantly after a minute.
Virgil wasn’t sure he’d heard that right. “What?”
“There are several physiological and neurological benefits to—” Logan began, determinedly not looking at Virgil’s face.
“No, I believe you,” Virgil interrupted, and in a surge of daring, added: “Sure.”
Logan blinked, his lips parting slightly in surprise. “Oh! Alright.” He shifted closer, carefully closing the gap between them like he was afraid of doing it wrong, and arranged himself against Virgil’s side with his head on Virgil’s shoulder and his arm draped across Virgil’s chest.
Virgil’s own arm curled around Logan easily, like it was meant to go there. Virgil ignored (mostly) his rapid heartbeat and how soft Logan’s hair was where it brushed against his cheek.
“Do you want to know something totally stupid?” Logan asked.
“Sure,” Virgil said, wondering where this was going.
“I’m scared of the space under my bed.” Logan half chuckled.
Virgil blinked. That had been kind of out of the blue. “What?”
“I’ve tried to rationalize it away. I know it doesn’t make sense.” Logan sounded half amused, like maybe he was trying to cover up some mild embarrassment with humor. “But ever since I was a little kid, it’s scared me. It was worse when I was little, I would have nightmares about it and everything. But it still makes me kind of nervous to just have empty space there. I like to fill it up.”
“That’s fair,” Virgil said. He understood irrational fears. “How come you’re telling me, though? Like, not in a judgemental way,” he added quickly, feeling Logan’s shoulders tense just slightly. “Just wondering where that came from.”
“Ah.” Logan relaxed again. “I am attempting vulnerability. You just shared what seemed like a pretty personal moment with me, and I know that can feel uncomfortable. I am trying to level the playing field a little.”
Virgil couldn’t help but smile. “That’s really sweet, Lo,” he said.
“I am just trying to be a good friend.” Logan shrugged one shoulder, but Virgil could hear the happy note in his voice.
“I was scared of going places by myself when I was little,” Virgil said. “Actually, that came from a nightmare, too.” He laughed a little.
“No, hey!” Logan protested. “Now it’s uneven again!”
“I don’t think that’s how vulnerability works,” Virgil told him, only teasing a little bit. “Friendship isn’t math, it doesn’t have to match on both sides. Besides, I got over that one, mostly. It’s all good.”
Logan nodded slowly in acceptance, rubbing his thumb back and forth across Virgil’s shoulder. “Alright.” He half sat up, but only took his glasses off and reached to put them on the sidetable, then lay back down, cuddling up even more cozily against Virgil once again, making a small noise of content.
“What have you been up to lately?” Virgil asked, his voice hardly above a whisper, because he needed there to be some kind of conversation. Not just to distract himself from the unpleasant stuff of earlier, although that was still a part of it, but also so that he could avoid examining the current situation too hard. Because Logan was just a friend, just a friend, and Virgil couldn’t afford to risk ruining a friendship as wonderful as this one with a big gay crush on his friend.
“Getting used to my new board position in the astronomy club,” Logan said. “And a lot of reading for my classes.”
“You’re the Vice President this year, right?” Virgil asked. Almost without thinking about it, he raised his hand to stroke Logan’s hair, which was just as soft against his fingertips as it had felt against his cheek.
Logan let out a soft sigh of content at the touch, nestling his head a little more snugly against Virgil’s shoulder, and coincidentally fucking melting Virgil’s heart into a puddle of goo. This whole not-a-crush thing was getting to be a serious problem.
“Yes, I’m the Vice President,” Logan confirmed. “I was the secretary last year, so I kind of know the ropes, but I have very different responsibilities this time. So that’s been interesting.”
“Tell me about it,” Virgil invited.
Logan did tell him about it, and then he asked Virgil what he’d been up to, and Virgil got to talk about a research project he was helping one of his favorite professors out with, and that led to telling each other stories about their favorite professors and classes (and some of the bad ones, too), and that led to stories about their friends, and Logan was looking up at Virgil with a soft gaze that Virgil could have stared into forever, and he really didn’t know what was up with Logan of all people’s sudden desire to cuddle, but he wasn’t asking questions because this was kind of the best thing that had happened in forever.
When, much later, the conversation slowly died down and Logan’s voice trailed off into a sleepy noise that he stifled against Virgil’s shoulder, scrunching his whole face up into a yawn, Virgil only tugged at the piled-up blanket he was leaning against until it half-covered the pair of them. Maybe the more responsible thing to do would have been to rouse Logan so he could go home to his apartment, but when Logan shifted closer to him and held him a little tighter, his eyes drifting shut, Virgil couldn’t find it in himself to regret it.
And he’d meant for it to only be a brief nap, really he had. He hadn’t planned to drift off himself as well. He could’ve sworn he only closed his eyes for a second or two—but when he opened them, sunlight was streaming through the window, and Logan was still there, still in Virgil’s arms cuddled close against his chest. Logan was wide awake now, but he seemed perfectly content to just lie there and examine Virgil’s face, a funny look in his eyes and a tiny smile on his lips.
“Hi,” Virgil said blearily, blinking at him. Then he processed where they were and what had happened. “Oh my god, I’m so sorry, I should have woken you up,” he began, half sitting up, his voice coming out a sleepy mumble that probably wasn’t anywhere near intelligible.
“No, it’s fine,” Logan assured him, gently pushing him back down. “I don’t mind.”
Virgil was half of a mind to keep apologizing, but it was very warm and he was still barely awake and Logan was so soft and nice, so all in all it was much easier to just lie there and accept the cuddles.
“Are you doing better?” Logan asked quietly.
It took Virgil a minute to fully remember the events of yesterday and figure out what he was referencing. “Oh. Uh, I guess. Like, it still sucks, but I’m going to be okay, you know? And this is nice, anyway.”
Logan nodded, resting his head on Virgil’s chest as if to listen to his heartbeat. “Yes. This is very nice.”
[4 years later]
part 2 - dreams  “Come to bed,” Logan said. “You have been scrolling through Tumblr for the past twenty-seven minutes, you can do that just as well while snuggling me.”
“I’ve been attacked,” Virgil said lightly, shutting off his laptop and turning around to face his boyfriend. Logan was sitting in bed in his pajamas, leaning back against the headboard of their bed, a book in his hands and the covers pulled up over his lap. Virgil smiled. “Let me go brush my teeth and then I’ll come cuddle you, babe.”
“Acceptable,” Logan agreed with an answering smile, his eyes flicking up briefly from the pages to meet Virgil’s own.
Virgil brushed his teeth in the little bathroom of the apartment Logan had shared with the twins in the two years since they’d all graduated college. Before reemerging, Virgil changed into the old t-shirt and flannel pajama pants he’d brought with him—he usually stayed overnight on the weekends these days, and this one was no exception.
Roman, sitting at the kitchen table poring over a wad of papers that were probably a script from the local community theatre’s latest production, waved at Virgil as he exited the bathroom. “G’night, Virge,” he called.
“Night, Ro,” Virgil responded, and for good measure, he added, “night, Remus.”
Remus, somewhere out of sight, cackled. “Have fun getting—”
“Shut the fuck up,” Virgil interrupted automatically, without any real bite, making his way back into Logan’s room and shutting the door behind himself.
Logan smiled at the sight of him, pulling back the covers invitingly. Virgil snagged his phone off of Logan’s desk on his way over, climbing into the bed and curling up with his head in Logan’s lap.
Logan let out a small, pleased sigh, resting his hand on Virgil’s shoulder.
“Happy?” Virgil asked, reaching up to touch Logan’s face.
Logan nodded. “Very.”
Virgil chuckled and half sat up so he could reach to kiss Logan, then settled himself back where he’d been and unlocked his phone, scrolling through Tumblr without paying too much attention. Logan’s hand came to rest lightly on the back of his head, and after a moment began stroking his hair.
He turned a page, then after a minute closed the book and set it down.
Virgil looked up. His boyfriend was gazing down at him, face scrunched up just slightly the way it always did when he was thinking hard about something.
“You good?” Virgil asked.
Logan started slightly. “Oh! Yes.” His hand, which had drifted to a stop at the base of Virgil’s skull, resumed gently stroking Virgil’s hair.
“Whatcha thinking about?” Virgil asked.
Logan was quiet for a beat, then met Virgil’s eyes. “Would you like to get married?”
Virgil choked on air. “What?”
“Married,” Logan repeated, a little shy this time. “You and I. Would you be interested in doing that?”
“I—” Virgil found himself at a loss for words. “I don’t know? Maybe?” He sat up, shutting off his phone and setting it on the sidetable. “I’m sorry—are you proposing to me in our pajamas?”
“No,” Logan said emphatically, frowning. “This is not a proposal. This is so we can talk about it ahead of time, so that if you do want it, then you won’t need to be anxious when I do propose.”
Virgil blinked, processing that. “Wow.” He reached over and brushed his thumb lightly across Logan’s cheek. “I love you so much, you know that?”
Logan’s brow smoothed out and his shoulders visibly untensed. “I love you too.” He put his hand over Virgil’s where it rested on his cheek, cradling it tenderly. He closed his eyes. “And you don’t need to have an answer right now. We can have this conversation whenever you like. I just… wanted to bring it up. Because I would like that, if you are also amicable.” He turned his head slightly and pressed a kiss to the palm of Virgil’s hand.
Virgil hooked a finger in the collar of Logan’s pajama shirt and drew him close for a soft kiss. “Come lay down and cuddle me properly, nerd.”
Logan obediently set his book down on the sidetable beside Virgil’s phone, pulled off his glasses, and set those down too. With some shuffling of limbs, the two of them lay down, Virgil curled up in Logan’s arms. To anyone else, Logan would have seemed perfectly relaxed, content to lay there and press the occasional kiss to Virgil’s forehead; but Virgil could sense the slight tension in Logan’s face. He was nervous, even if he was trying hard not to show it.
Virgil’s own thoughts were whirling. Did he want to get married? He’d be lying if he said he hadn’t thought about it. But they were both still so young. Marriage was so big. Even if they’d been dating for more than four years at this point, that was barely more than a blip in the really long run. And what if they found out too late that they disagreed on something important? What if Logan wanted to take out a huge mortgage, or move across the country, or have kids? (Okay, they’d talked about kids, and both felt super hesitant, not-yet-ready at best, about the whole idea. But what if Logan changed his mind?)
(But also… waking up to Logan’s face every morning. Waking up to coffee with Logan and sleepy yawns. Casual touches on the elbow or shoulder or wrist or waist or cheek throughout the day, little reminders of love that were almost thoughtless in their routine. A home that would be just theirs. They could get a pet, if they wanted. They could paint stars on the ceiling or walls. They could cook dinner together every night. They could stay up late watching old TV shows and making snarky commentary back and forth. They could be each other’s home.)
Logan was watching Virgil’s face intently, even as he did his best to play it cool. Virgil met his eyes. “So,” he began, struggling to find the right words for what he wanted to convey. “I—I don’t know what I want. Or. I guess I kind of do. But I’m nervous.”
“We don’t have to,” Logan said quickly. “I mean. Obviously. But I don’t want you to—to feel pressured, or anything, to say anything one way or the other or to have to even say anything at all or—”
“Hey,” Virgil interrupted soothingly as Logan’s voice sped into anxious overdrive. “Hey, it’s okay.”
Logan sucked in a breath. He nodded. “I—sorry.”
Virgil shook his head and leaned across the few inches between them to kiss Logan. “Babe, I just told you I’m nervous. It’s fine if you are too.”
“I’m not nervous—” Logan began. He cut himself off at the wry look Virgil gave him. “I—okay, fine. But it’s not a big deal.”
“Hmm, disagree.”
“But the whole point was so I could support you if you felt—”
“L. Babe. Light of my life. You get nervous when you’re vulnerable. I get it.”
Logan bit his lip and reached for Virgil’s hand. He held it tightly.
Virgil squeezed back and snuggled closer under the covers. “Anyway, uh.” He paused for a second to make sure he knew how he wanted to say it. “I—I still don’t know exactly what I want to say about that idea. But I know the answer is definitely not a no.”
Logan breathed in, not quite sharply enough to be a gasp. “Oh,” he breathed, letting go of Virgil’s hand so he could caress his face.
“Does that make sense?” Virgil asked. “Like, I don’t yet know how or when I want it. But I—I think I want to, eventually, and I really want it to be you.”
“Yeah,” Logan said, his voice coming out a little choked. “Yeah, that—that’s good.”
Virgil half smiled. “Kiss?” he asked.
Logan was reaching for him before he even finished the word, pulling him close and clinging to him as he kissed the breath from Virgil’s lungs like he never wanted to let go. Virgil wrapped his own arm around Logan, holding him just as tightly, and cupped Logan’s face with the hand that was trapped between the two of them.
“I love you,” Virgil whispered as they pulled apart, and now he was choking up a little too.
Logan pressed their foreheads together. “I love you so much.”
They were both quiet for a moment, holding each other close.
“I think it’d be nice to get one of those really fancy coffee machines,” Virgil whispered after a minute. “Someday. For our someday kitchen.” He enjoyed Logan’s sudden intake of breath and the way his eyes widened slightly at the word our. “The kind that can make espresso, and shit,” Virgil went on. “We could try out all different kinds of things. And I wouldn’t tell anybody how much sugar you always put in your coffee.”
“I put a normal amount of sugar in my coffee,” Logan protested, a smile quirking onto his face.
“L, I love you, but that is maybe the least true thing you have ever said in your life.” Virgil snickered.
“Shut up,” Logan whined, pushing lightly at Virgil’s shoulder with an answering grin.
Virgil leaned in and kissed his cheek. “It’s cute.” He hesitated for a beat. “What would you want? In your dream future?”
“You,” Logan responded immediately.
Virgil pressed a hand to his mouth. He absolutely should have seen that one coming, but he hadn’t, and the surprise made the pang of fondness in his chest all the sweeter. “Logan,” he managed after a minute.
Logan only grinned, looking very pleased with himself. “A coffee machine does sound very nice, too, though,” he added. “And space for you to keep an instrument.”
“Oh,” Virgil breathed, lighting up at the idea. “Yeah, that sounds really good. I’d want a library for all your stupid nerdy books.”
Logan put a hand on Virgil’s cheek. “I’d want a kitchen table that we both picked out together.”
Virgil grinned. “A couch to hold you on.”
“A wall full of art that we both like.”
“Windows so there’s light everywhere and you can see the stars at night.”
“A pantry full of our favorite foods.”
“A bed to—”
“Virgil!”
“Whaaat?”
“We were being cute!” Logan smacked his arm lightly. “Remus is a bad influence on you,” he accused, though Virgil could see he was trying not to laugh.
“I mean, probably,” Virgil allowed, grinning. “But maybe I was just going to say a bed to sleep in. And cuddle in. And perfectly innocent things like that. Maybe you’re the one Remus is a bad influence on.”
“I—” Logan struggled for a second, then broke down into snickers.
Virgil grinned, wrapping his arms around Logan’s waist and enjoying the sound of his laughter.
“Were you going to say something like that, though?” Logan asked, composing himself.
“Oh, no, absolutely not.” Virgil snickered. “You were right, I was going to ruin the cutesy vibe we had going on there, one hundred percent. But you’re really cute when you laugh, so no regrets.”
“Hmm,” Logan hummed, leaning closer. “You know when else I’m really cute?”
“When?” Virgil breathed.
“When I’m kissing you,” Logan murmured, and closed the gap between their lips.
Virgil kissed back, eyes fluttering shut and hands sliding a little more securely around Logan’s waist. In his opinion, Logan made a very compelling point.
S5 Ep 15 Pt 1: The Gang Gets Lost in India
Ah, back to Yugioh classic. Sort of. We’re going into the second filler arc before Bakura, which I have been told is kind of nonsense. And youknow what, from the first scene--this is the first scene by the way--yeah I can see the nonsense.
Tumblr media
We got Yami cosplaying as the Chrysler building, we got Yugi saying WTFWTF, we got...this thing?
Tumblr media
This thing tells us “Join my game, Yugi!” and then the demon just kinda bounces.
Tumblr media
K, bye, I guess.
(read more under the cut)
Waking up from this nightmare, Yugi reveals that he has outgrown his good pajamas. Or maybe he just overused them like I did to my favorite pajamas during quarantine (which, not gonna lie, I hand sewed my favorite pajama pants back together 2 or 3 times like they were the Velveteen Rabbit. Quarantine pajamas and me were like best buds for a year there.)
Tumblr media
RIP Yugi’s good pajamas.
It’s fine. I’m fine.
I can get used to Yugi in his normal ass old man pajamas without any cute stars on them. I can accept this. He’s getting older. So much older that for a second I thought he was learning Hebrew, by the looks of his books on his counter. I thought...wow, is Yugi actually attempting to learn a language spoken around the time of ancient Egyptians???
Tumblr media
But uh...I went a searching and unfortunately that’s not Hebrew, and if that is a language, I don’t know what it is. Pretty sure it’s just random marks because this show has to be translated in so many languages. Man. For a second there that looked like really sneaky world building, but nah, Yugi is still kind of a dumbass who has yet to attend a solid year of school.
Also, I got to take in this mustard yellow as if I’ve seen it for the first time.
Tumblr media
It has strong building blocks energy. It’s...so much yellow and it’s extremely the vibe of that one set of animal crossing decorations that I have because it’s a very common recipe, but, can’t figure out for the life of me how to fit into any room.
Tumblr media
What am I supposed to do with these, Nintendo? Other than recreate Yugi’s Muto’s haunted game store/house?
Like I live in the Bay area and we have wild painted houses so you can see them through the fog (back when we...still had fog, RIP California) --but this is a little much. This is such strong Protagonist energy but as a house.
Also, I’ve don’t think I’ve brought this up before, but like...Yugi is loaded, right? Like he’s way too good and humble to ever say he’s loaded, and they sort of make it seem like he’s not (when compared to Seto Kaiba) but damn, this location of his real estate sure is something. That and Grandpa’s tiny shop seems to run on a constant deficit and his family just doesn’t care.
Tumblr media
We flash back a bit to Gramps sneaking out, and Yugi is like “oh great, my only Father figure I ever talk about is getting a backpack together and just...leaving without any notice, huh? Without telling me you were going to go? Didn’t think that would maybe be a little off putting?“ and Gramps is like “Yes?”
Like Gramps nearly died going to an amusement park a few episodes back so I can see why Yugi is a little bit concerned.
Tumblr media
Down the street at a little town lottery, Joey is getting further into gambling (I don’t know what those little street lotteries are called, it’s in a lot of anime--but kinda looks like mom lotteries for moms.)
Tumblr media
I’m not sure why India is on Joey Wheeler’s bucket list, seems a little random, but he went to Pegasus’ country, after all and that’s barely even a country.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Joey going nuts on a lottery machine instead of going to school was pretty peak filler, so I’m not really minding this stuff so far.
Tumblr media
And then, just to spook me, check this out:
Tumblr media
I can’t believe they even let them back into a classroom. In my nerd school, if you missed one too many days, you were sent to the bad schools to be someone else’s problem. But in Yugi’s case...that either IS his school or...Yugi is failing International School, which is just a thing he’s allowed to do, because, as I said before, this kid has got to be loaded. Even Seto Kaiba was like “I’m not spending money on this school anymore. That outfit is like 50 bucks a jacket.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Youknow, I have seen all the other characters knock on Tea’s choice of cute ass monsters for the last 5 seasons, and she has never once changed them out. She is holding onto this scary seraphim thing with the many wings like every child with their first Pidgey. She does not care.
Also how is this thing cute?
like the front of this orb has a face with hearts on it but like...it is kind of remarkable what Yugioh decides is cute. Magma golem: not cute. this thing? This thing that looks like it’s a chibi version of the last chapters of the bible and will sound the trumpets of the second coming? So cuuuuute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tristan used to be the Janitor/hall monitor/square archetype. Like hell he can walk around with that 00′s R+B soundtrack.
Tumblr media
Joey appears in order to get us the hell out of school, and the art team retires this school background for the rest of what I assume is this entire series.
Goodbye school. Maybe you’ll come back with Bakura. Which would be weird, since rumor is that arc takes place in ancient Egypt.
On their walk home, Tea lets out in an inner monologue that no one could hear that after 5 straight seasons of his BS, she’s sick and tired of Pharaoh being the center of attention all the time and she needs a freakin break.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TBH, as she was thinking in her head like “Pharoah is just so freakin much” Yugi switched over to Pharaoh and was like “WHATS UP TEA, THINKING ABOUT ME??” and I thought for a split second maybe he read her mind with his Pharaoh powers.
And like...maybe he did? Seems like a thing he can just do but chooses not to tell anyone about. I mean would you tell anyone? I wouldn’t.
Tumblr media
So, unlike Miho in Season Zero, who at least had the decency to try to take her Mother to Australia, Joey Wheeler has wisely decided that the 3 other ticket holders will not be the 3 other members of his immediate family. That would have been the most awkward trip between Serenity, his mother he hasn’t really spoken to in 7 years, and his absent father who was written out of the series for being a raging alcoholic. They would have not even made it to the plane.
Instead he’s gonna take the ghost in Yugi’s head and call that an adult (two tickets in one, really). It’s honestly not that bad of a plan, since his only other father figure, Grandpa, is MIA, and his only other, other father figure, Roland, charges like 300 dollars an hour and wants stock options and health insurance.
Tumblr media
And honestly they should have taken Roland because he’s one of their best plane guys.
Tumblr media
So they take the smallest little Amelia Earheart plane in the world, going from Japan to (checks map) India...which 2 times the distance this plane can go and it crashes...which is exactly what would happen if you took a teeny tiny plane over the Himalayan mountains without refueling that thing.
Tumblr media
We call this a magical incident later in the episode, but this is just basic math.
So, fun fact, (and probably why I discuss planes so often on this blog) two of my Grandfathers were pilots (well, three, since my grandmother remarried another pilot), which sounds like a crazy coincidence until you recall that their generation was in WW2 and we just shoved children in planes for 20 years and called that normal.
Anyway, to save on travel costs, my engineer Grandfather built his own plane out of junkyard parts, which, as you can imagine, is a living nightmare, and it was held together by like duct tape and gasoline (which at one time used to be cheap). Tempted God every day that Howls Moving Castle touched the sky.
And while I only know it from photos since I wasn’t exactly born yet, it looked exactly like this plane. So looking at this, all I can think is...yeah...that’s what you get for flying to India in a tin can car. To this day I cannot trust any plane of this size.
So, they climb out of their wreckage virtually unscathed and into familiar Californian territory.
Tumblr media
At least Joey thought about bringing a tent.
It’s interesting how our cast has become so accustomed to this that they’re not even all that shell shocked. It’s just another day in the life.
So next time we shall find out what India has in store for us. Or if we’re even in India...because again...feels a lot like this BG team doesn’t do any research into their landscapes and every place feels a whole lot of the same. But...at least they didn’t put any Arizonan mesas in India.
Slow day at work today, so I indulged in a little game of “can we figure out which Gallavich scenes from the new promo happen in which upcoming episode”. Well, at least it started out as a slow day at work; then it spiraled well into the evening, because apparently this is how I get my kicks. Strap yourself in for some half-assed deductions and semi-educated guesses!
All right, so the burning things scene and Ian’s “all?/aw?” scene might happen in the same episode, because though it’s hard to say for certain, it seems like the clothes Ian and Mickey wear match up. Checkered shirt on Ian, brown jacket – which I don’t think is identical to the brown hoodie? – on Mickey.
Now, watching the promo, I did get the sense that these two moments are connected – perhaps Mickey says he wants to get rid of whatever, Ian wonders if he wants to get rid of all of it, and then they light that fire up. (ETA: I’ve been made aware that Ian might not be saying “all” but “aw” and listening to it again, that seems a distinct possibility, and if so... I still think it’s connected, but I’m less sure how.) I also have a feeling that this might be related to Terry and his secret – they discover something that Mickey decides to destroy – and so this might be from 11x09. Please note that there’s nothing solid at all to this, though; it’s all “sense” and “feeling” and hypothetical in the extreme, and like Debbie’s efforts at making breakfast, I wouldn’t trust it. I went looking for some sort of corroboration, and I found this:
That same checkered shirt appears bundled in Cam’s lap in BTS photos Emma posted on January 21:st (and February 8:th). Filming of 11x08 concluded on January 16:th, as per Shanola’s IG story, so by January 21:st they were well into shooting 11x09 (if we assume, as I think we can, that they were shooting the episode by episode one by one at that time). However, we don’t know that Emma posted the pics on the day they were actually taken and, indeed, the fact that pictures that appear to be from the same day were posted weeks apart suggest that she did not, so this is tenuous at best. But that outfit Frank is wearing does look a lot like what he’s wearing when he’s talking about a heist in the promo, and according to the episode descriptions he’ll be plottting a heist in 11x09.
So yeah, circumstantial at best, but I think there’s a halfway decent case for the burning things scene and the “all?” scene to appear in 11x09 (even if I still might be dead wrong about how these two moments are connected, and about them having anything to do with Terry – that’s all guesswork and speculation).
Mickey headbutting Lip is easy, and I see that others have already made the connection. We’ve got BTS from 11x10 with Mickey in that very outfit, so it seems highly likely that the Lip vs. Mickey thing will occur in that episode.
As for the heavily anticipated hug, I’ve seen it suggested that it might be from 11x08 since Mickey is sporting a black shirt in the stills from that episode, just as he does when pulled into his husband’s loving arms.
However, in these stills we see him wearing that shirt with camo pants and even though it’s perfectly possible that he changes out of the pants but keeps the shirt, I’d suggest that the outfit better matches what he’s wearing in this BTS video, from when they were shooting 11x11 (as it was posted on the February 20, after they started filming 11x11, but before they started filming 11x12).
Admittedly, you can’t see it very well, but it looks like he’s got a black shirt on under the jacket and the brown hoodie, as well as light blue jeans (and it would appear that it’s the same outfit he wears in this lovely photo, and that also adds up with what Paris is wearing on the porch). Ian’s hoodie also matches between porch and hug scene, and the fact that their clock has been taken down when they hug suggests they are packing up their room, which is arguably more likely to happen nearer the end of the season. I think there’s a fairly prevalent assumption that they were shooting an episode opening (possibly for 11x12) on the porch in that BTS video, and if so their clothes there don’t necessarily match their outfits for the actual episode they were shooting at the time (i.e. 11x11), but would production really bother putting them in different outfits just for an episode opening rather than simply going with whatever outfits they were already wearing at the time? At least Frank, Debbie, Franny and V are all sporting porch outfits they’ve probably filmed 11x11 scenes in; those pics were uploaded on Shanola’s IG story while they were shooting 11x11. But yeah, take this one with a large grain of salt.
So, that’s what I got, so far. 11x10 I feel is pretty solid; the other two less so. There’s no real point in having this information, but I had fun digging for it, so here we are. XD Make of it what you will, and please feel free to add stuff to support and/or disprove whatever – this wasn’t by an exhaustive digging session, which means I haven’t gone through and double-checked all relevant BTS (for instance, Ian is wearing the checkered shirt in the background of his siblings arguing in another scene from the promo but I haven’t bothered going back to see if I can put a definitive episode to any of the other characters’ outfits). It’s quite possible, or even likely, that I have missed stuff, but I feel done with this game for now so I’ll leave it at this.
(And what if they just reuse outfits a lot in the last few episodes, Kee? What if they are still block shooting a bit? Well, then I’m fucked, ain’t I, so let’s hope they don’t.)
