“it's okay,”

your soothing voice rang out, assuring the man beside you.

slowly, you place your hand on top of his, then give him a small smile. despite your attempts to soothe his worries, you notice his eyes crinkle with worry.

his tiny fidgets from his free hand against his clothing, and the tiny, barely noticeable frown on his lips.

earlier, the anxious man himself, despite being the size of a bear, had stammered out that he did not know what to ask nor how to act when buying things for himself.

apparently karhan wanted to buy jewellery but did not know how to ask for a specific one since one, everyone is afraid of him, and two, he generally looks scary and does not know how to seem nice to people.

so, you gave several advices to karhan as always. after a few encouragements and having to forcefully push him into the shop, karhan had managed to order personal jewellery without absolutely terrifying the worker (the worker was, unfortunately, terrified at first, much to karhan's dismay).

though, karhan was initially proud of himself for being able to push through his comfort zone— it did not take too long for him to have doubts about himself.

which led to the situation now, with his downcast self slumping against the bench and you attempting to soothe his insecurities and worries.

“karhan,”

your voice tried to reach his ears, and it fortunately managed to gain his attention. his eyes lit up, though a little with him still being anxious.

he quickly averted his eyes, to which you responded slowly and gently, placing your free hand on his cheek.

you brought his eyes to yours and once again, gave him a reassuring smile. his anxious expression melted once he got accustomed to your gentle eyes.

“you did well,”

you whispered softly to him, the hand on top of his slowly intertwined with his fingers. you slowly move your other hand from his cheek to the back of his head.

then, you led his head to rest on your shoulder. as if magic, you felt him slump. his body almost relaxing as he pressed his weight onto you.

not that you mind, if anything, you were happy to support him.you slowly patted his head as he buried his face onto your shoulder.

you cooed several praises in a hush tone, only for him to here and compliments solely for him. suddenly, you felt him bringing you into a tight hug, as if he genuinely needed it.

you heard him sigh as his head remained on your shoulder. he definitely needed the hug. the comfort and the support, to know that he is not alone right now. not that you would let him be alone, ever.

you rested your head against his shoulder and whispered to his ear,

“i'll always be here for you,”

you felt his fingers gripping your outfit tightly, yet you did not mind. you smile at how adorable he is and pat his back. his voice mumbled back to you, in a soft, assured tone.

“thank you,”

you could hear his small smile from those two words alone. you took the serene silence as a chance to place a gentle kiss on his cheek.

he stiffened, and his cheeks flushed red almost immediately as you heard awkward stammer from him. you laugh at his reaction, patting his cheek with pride.

who could have known such a bear-sized man could be this cute?

in two weeks, you received that jewellery karhan ordered as a gift. you had wondered why he ordered personal jewellery back then.

so that was what he was doing.

Thinking about the Don Suave scene and what it means in terms of LGBTQ+ representation because my brain does nothing if not torment me with random topics to ramble about on the regular.

Anyway, I just wanted to ramble about why I like the scene but to get it out of the way - the scene can very easily be interpreted in so many different ways, and all of them are valid. I personally see it as Leo having at least some attraction to a man. And the following is an explanation of my own interpretation and thoughts on it and what it means especially for Leo’s portrayal in the grand scheme of things.

Long-winded interpretation under the cut!

Now, to start with, it’s important to me that in the scene Leo looks at Don Suave in the very beginning and then for the entirety of the rest of the time the man is on screen, Leo’s eyes are closed. Yet, in the end, he is still visibly enamored with Don Suave, happily cuddling up to him as he’s being carried away.

You can very easily interpret this as Leo being spellbound and that’s honestly super valid and I believe he likely was at least somewhat in the beginning, but considering how fast he looked away and how he never looked again, I personally think it makes more sense to read it as Leo just finding the man attractive, at least somewhat. (For the record, I personally headcanon Rise Leo as bisexual with a heavy preference for men, but I want to be blunt when I say that any interpretation is valid. Literally any. Ace, pan, gay, bi, none of the above or a mixture of something new literally all of it is more than okay and fair. Hell you could even interpret this entire scene as more romantic attraction than physical and it would still work. Anything goes!! Don’t bother people, guys, really.)

The main reason I take this scene to be at the very least LGBTQ+ adjacent isn’t just because of how it’s portrayed, but because of who Leonardo is. Not in terms of Rise of the TMNT, but in terms of the entire Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles™️ franchise.

Leo’s a character who, while changing with each iteration, has still at his core been around for decades upon decades as “the blue one”. One fourth of the team. He’s the one most are going to look at as the Leader, and oftentimes he is the one closest to having the title of Main Character. Not to say the others aren’t just as important, but Leo’s presence in the A plots of basically all TMNT media is often something very main character-esque.

And that’s very, very important to note. Here we have a Main Character of a prolific and decades long-running franchise distributed by a children’s television network. You can play around with his and his brothers’ characters all you like, but there is always going to be challenges to dodge around, especially since this was still in 2018-2019.

For example, you can play around with their designs so long as they’re color coded turtles, but their sexualities? Now that’s tricky.

“But what about Hypno and Warren?” Not main characters and also they’re Rise originals. They have a lot more room to play around with than a character like Leo does. But even talking about main characters in the franchise, you could arguably have an easier time playing around with Donnie or Mikey’s sexualities than Leo or even Raph, as (unfortunately) the former two tend to get more B plots, so they’d likely have had a little more leeway (still not a lot though.)

So, where does this leave us?

It leaves us in a place where outright stating and/or showing undeniable proof of Leo’s attraction to men is very, very difficult. So, workarounds!

Workarounds like the entire Don Suave situation.

To be honest, as left up to interpretation and lowkey and deniable as it is, this whole scene means a lot to me because of who Leo is as a character. It’s just nice when we get so see even the bare bones of representation with characters that have been such a large part of pop culture for decades, y’know? Even if more would be so much nicer, this is better than I thought we’d ever get for these boys.

And, again, literally nothing I’ve said is the only way to interpret it, I’m more than happy when people interpret media on their own honestly, it’s just something I’ve been thinking of lately and I was wondering if others felt the same way.

Whatever you think when you interpret this scene or Rise Leo as a whole, I just thought this would be interesting to think about, even if it was ramble-y, haha.

i have more conspiracies about MASH that may or may not be true, but ive decided they are. they also just might have been explained, but im dumb, and cant remember. heres your sequel.

in 7x3 where hawkeye tackles bj, bj goes "AAH!' and hawkeye says 'WRONG! THAT STARTS WITH AN H!'. this is because mike farrell's line was 'hey!' but due to the force and drama of the scene, just Yelped instead.

All the dogs that turned up that never appeared again [like the one bj and hawk "ate" when they were trying to scare a visitor, dogs seen in 1 shot, etc] were just dogs that the production crew/cast owned and wanted to bring to work/volunteered their animal for acting duty

in the handful if scenes where hawkeye is actually knitting [and not using the red yarn, for the reason given in the previous edition], hes making a blankie for erin. [co-credit my sibling]

klinger got his ears pierced during the course of the show, starting with clearly just clip-ons and then later declares he doesnt want his ears to close up. some say continuity error, I say commitment (and also it would probably be easier to find real earrings instead of clip-ons)

in s7e2 Peace on Us, no one told bill christopher to tie that red streamer around his neck, he just thought it would be silly

in s7e2 Peace on Us, again, no one told alan alda to drive the jeep back to camp with his leg up like that. he just knows the character well enough to make that call. which he's correct about

the scar on hawkeye's lip was caused by a fishhook in his youth. got called Troutboy a long time afterward because of it.

bj is a vaseline girlie and takes good care of his hair as well.

hawkeye sniffs food because, having grown up partly during the depression, eating spoiled food was a real risk, so giving it a good ol' sniff-test was a given

fr mulcahy cares deeply about his appearance and engages in more grooming activities than any other guy in camp [the shower cap, always looking perfect, owning gardening gloves, manicured hands and feet, etc]. he even irons his stole on a bi-weekly basis and launders his clerical collars

hawkeye's issues with people leaving and not saying goodbye began with his mother after she passed, since his father didnt want him to worry

on nights where charles goes to bed after the other two, he will occasionally clean up a little bit. this contributes to why he's so pissed in 'Pressure Points'- he's been doing his own cleaning and some of theirs without them noticing or caring.

once again these are all just things that came to mind while watching, i didnt think too hard on them. the only one 'researched' on was the food sniffing, solely because i needed to do Year Math lol
