Episode 7: Beignets!
I rewatched S2E2 of Helluva Boss ("Seeing Stars") and got hit with that BANGER of a line from Loona about dads having issues and messing up all the time but still caring. VIVZIE, I am sensing a THEMEEEEEEE.
And thank you for all the lovely comments thus far! I'm so tickled to see how many folks connect with this, whether you're from the American South or not. Food is such a core love language for so many people.
SOUTHERN COMFORT FOOD SERIES Chicken and Waffles Sweet Tea Peach Cobbler Hushpuppies Crab/Crawfish Boil Gumbo (plus character notes!) Beignets part 2 Shrimp and Grits Cornbread Biscuits and Gravy Pecan Pie/Sugar Pie Fried Catfish ??? - Season 1 Finale
Description under the cut!
[IMAGE DESCRIPTION: Radioapple comic
PANEL 1: (Lucifer sits atop a barstool-like chair on his balcony at the hotel. He's curled up in on himself, quietly crying with his head in his arms as he slumps over the marble balustrade and his tail curled around his ankles.)
PANEL 2: (Alastor gently sets a large platter of fresh beignets next to Lucifer's arm, and Lucifer glances up, looking miserable.) Alastor: (offscreen) You're not a bad father, you know.
PANEL 3: (Alastor strikes a jazz-hands pose as a canned laugh track emanates from his cane.) Alastor: Granted, YES you did fail spectacularly! You fail A LOT. But...
PANEL 4: (Closeup of the lower half of Lucifer's face as more tears fall down his cheeks.) Alastor: (offscreen) ...you're consistently, SINCERELY trying. And that is incredibly important.
PANEL 5: (closeup of Alastor's right eye in profile) Alastor: It's certainly more than my father ever did.
PANEL 6: (Alastor reaches over and places a hand on Lucifer's, which is still clutching at his upper arm. Though we can't see Lucifer's face, he's sitting a little straighter, looking up at Alastor.) Alastor: (offscreen) Or yours, for that matter.

I love watching Phantom where the Raoul is giving it his all and is trying his best to be a good boyfriend and yet Christine is still visually conflicted on choosing him or the literal murderer that lives underground.

Have you heard about the new movie that’s been confirmed to come out? (The Neil Gaimen book that Henry will direct again.)
If so what’s your opinion on having this new story that kinda takes place in the same universe/similar story instead of a sequel to Coraline?
I feel great about it! I love Henry and Neil working together!
I do wish people weren't referring to it as a Coraline sequel though, it's a new story with a similar premise in Neil's universe and I'm worried media hyping it up to be "Coraline sequel, Coraline sequel!!!" will set this original film up for "Oh well it wasn't as good as Coraline" which isn't fair. It deserves its own chance :)

In the dim of night, the sound of your door opening drags you out of your concentration. You save your progess and stand to your feet, moving towards your living room your boyfriend's hoodie keep you warm.
Anton is where you expect him to be, his backpack slung onto your love seat, struggling to to take off his jacket. "you're home late." you say, he tenses up turning over to look at you. relief very clearly washing over him.
"Today was really hectic, got berated at practice, professor gave us a huge project to work on, so i had to get started on that. Then I got held back over time at the cafe." he explained followed by a string of curses, still struggling to take of his jacket. you beeline to him, pulling the stuck sleeve off, throwing it to where his bag was.
Before you could say something new, he pulls you into a warm embrace, his arms squeezing you tight. "i really missed you." your hands wrap around him pulling him closer. "same here." you pause.
"wanna take a shower to ease your nerves a bit? " " just wanna hold you." "we could shower together." you pause giving him space to respond, "then have some soup to end the day?" he shifts, standing straight his arms moving to your neck. "sounds great."

God, the page with Jason telling Bruce he's okay with dying again is supposed to feel warm and fuzzy but I genially don't know how you read this without feeling like Bruce is manipulative and Jason is falling for it, or that its happening in a setting completely divorced from Bruce and Jason's characters where all emotion got sucked in a vacuum.
its like Bruce brought ONLY Jason alone to the place to get the serum explaining the plan only at that movement. The isolation, the pressure of the moment, the context that Bruce presents, it feels like it was specifically engineered to get the response from Jason.
Tumblr media
When Jason volunteers Bruce barely argues. His only argument is about himself ("after everything I've done to you") nothing about the impact Jason's death would have on him nothing about how JASON would feel about dying or even asking him if it would be hard?
Tumblr media
The thing is this SHOULD be a HUGE moment!! Jason's life was destroyed by being murdered. Its one of the biggest tragedies in Bruce's life to the point where his entire perspective on all his life changes irreparably. And they decide to recreate one of the worst moments in either of their lives that irreversibly changed them as people with SMILES ON THEIR FACES.
Tumblr media
Jason: So happy Bruce trusts me to die :) Bruce: So happy Jason's going to die in an extremely risky way :) And Jason's justification for being happy about dying is that its Bruce letting him have "control over his own decisions", as if that was the key problem with Bruce giving Jason permanent fear gas and not the loss of bodily autonomy that Jason dying for Bruce only aggravates.

i see people prophesying a terrible fate for alice, sam and others with the justification of "they are jonny sims' characters! look at what he did to x!".
while that is an understandable instinct, we have to remember that the main writer for protocol is Alex. that's SO much worse and none of you are talking about it.

Whoever decided to put the Batfam member who's supposed to come from a dark place in life and understands how slippery the slope really is when it comes to falling into crime in the fucking Kite Man show and have her mindlessly impale a guy should be slapped. Once for making a Kite Man show and once for Steph.
Like she's not above killing people. She's not like Bruce who refuses to take a life ever. She'd blow the Joker's fucking head off if given the chance. But she's supposed to understand the regular dudes. She understands the importance of a life. She knows that guy's probably got family at home, or at least deserves to be given a chance. It took a long time before anybody gave her a chance, she knows how hard it is in that life.
Then again it's a spinoff of the Harley Quinn show so what did I expect.

At the beginning it was Narumi's impulsive and impatient ass that'd rush to any yamazon order he sees delivered to the base and grab them all for himself before checking for the possibility that some of them might not be his...
But after one too many times getting scolded by your, getting his ear pulled or getting into a heated argument with you- right in front of many people no less- He sees the fruit garden of an opportunity as it is, and decides to use it for his advantage.
Especially when the orders /are/ delivered to his person by accident.
Who can blame the poor delivery guys though? They are giving the boxes to him by muscle memory at this point- sick of coming back to the base doors day after day and always the same darn name on the papers: Narumi Gen
Meanwhile Narumi enjoys seeing the growing frustration on your person when the telltale message of "orders delivered" has arrived yet there is nothing in sight. Some orders have you worried more than the others, piquing his interest and going as far as to try his chances every once in a while when he's feeling bold: "Oh? You want these so badly? Then beg"
(It results with a hardcover book of yours meeting with the crown of his head every single time. Always a different book and the current one always heavier than the previous...)

There are genuinely people online that instead of actually bringing people to the left, at this point, would prefer that anyone who was previously not on the left but who tries to be *stays* outside of the left, because i guess its just easier to comprehend when the world is put into little shitty boxes you labeled for them instead of actually thinking for once and having the nuance to understand them. Like thats wild to me that theres people who would prefer you not be on the left or not try to be. Yall GENUINELY do not care about advocating for your side politically in any capacity. Its LITERALLY just a clique you've found yourself in. And theres nothing progressive about that or being exclusive, wtf do you think this shit is, a night club? Grow the fuck up, honestly.

Kipperlily Copperkettle analysis, this is a long one so click read more to read all of it.
Kipperlily Copperkettle. Halfling Rogue.
The Model Minority.
Her parents work good jobs, respectable jobs. One of them is a realtor, they are charismatic and good with words and they work hard. Hard for their family, hard to keep things in order. The other works in bastion city, away from home and with the council of chosen. A noble job, one that is met with praise and awards. It is a good job, a respectable job for the greater good.
Her family is good. Her family is picture perfect, with two parents and a kid and a white picket fence.
She must be perfect, for her sake, for her parents sake. Halflings are kind. Halflings are sweet. They get along with everyone. They are peacemakers, so much so that humans and elves could come and take solace from them. Years of bloody history and violence brews in her veins, and she is supposed to be complicit and smile and act kind. She does so for her parents sake, with a slicked back ponytail and a perfect uniform and a smile too big, too unnerving.
I’m sure people tried to dissuade her, telling her that she wouldn't find more comfort in something different? Maybe a job as a clerk or a secretary, or an artificer so she could help build things for people. She has her mind set though, with her nails digging into her palms to control the bitter rage that boils in her as she is only ever underestimated.
High school starts and it's supposed to be a new beginning. She will find her party, and she will make friends. And she does, sort of. The High Five heroes she calls them, setting herself up as the leader. She has to take control of everything. They don't really listen to her though. Oisin and Ivy are immediately their own little duo, as are Ruben and Lucy, although Lucy has made a point to include Kipperlily too, and Mary Ann just acts uninterested in everything thus far. She has to make sure everything is perfect. A fight happens during the first day of school. It results in two students death, and makes the principle commit murder suicide on both himself and the counselor in order to bring two students back. Maybe that's where it started, the jealousy and the burning hatred and the obsession. Maybe it started a little earlier that day, when Riz handed out his business cards, and Kipperlily took it. Saw his name, maybe even wanted to be friends at first. Maybe he was too busy with the case of missing penny luckstone, maybe he was too busy with the friends that seemed to care about him. Maybe Kipperlily was jealous that his party actually cared about him, whilst hers only tolerated her at best.
I think that's where it started. The jealousy, the obsession. Her anger got worse, nails digging into skin and drawing blood. She is just so angry. She has always been angry, rage and spite boiling in her blood. Her parents said she came into the world not crying but screaming, like existing in this very world hurt her. She studied him. She learnt everything about him as the year went on and she felt shame. Burning, red shame. She started seeing the new counselor in hopes of getting help. She knew this wasn't normal. She was just so angry and had nothing to do with all this rage and fury. So she talked about it, how she was jealous of him. How he got the perfect adventurers story, a dead dad and a party full of people who cared. Her parents were normal. They were perfect, blended in perfectly. They were kind and sweet and polite and possibly never home because they have busy jobs. Busy respectable jobs. They were respectable people and nothing more because the world would never allow them to be anything more.
One way or another, Porter hears of a halfling rogue with rage in her veins. One way or another he approaches her, tells her that he will help her. He sees her potential, he sees just how great she can be. Kipperlily believes him. She trains with him, learning from him, hooked on to every word of praise he gives her. She is special, she is meant for something great, this school is just unfair and hands out blatant favoritism and she has to stop it.
Kipperlily takes the rage star, lets it fall into her chest and every petty grudge, jealousy and dislike simply turns to wrath and hatred. She gets her party to join her too, leveling them up with the help of porter and jace. She kills them. She stands over their bodies as rage stars are forced onto their chests. As their corpses are violated and they are brought back just as angry as she has always been. Kipperlily feels no guilt, this is what she is meant to do Porter tells her. She is meant to bring greatness.
Lucy is the only one who doesn't come back. That hurts her, in a way different to anything she has ever felt. Lucy always had her back, always had her side when the party was ganging up on her. Lucy was the only one who understood what it was like to be put down and underestimated. But..she stayed dead. She decided being dead was better than being with her.
Kipperlily tries to move on but sorrow and rage just burn deep within her.
The rest is history. But one thing is clear, rage has always festered in the heart of Kipperlily, and when she tried to get help, when shame burned in her veins at how childish her rage and jealousy was, she was failed by the people she was supposed to trust. Her rage was used as a weapon, both against her and against others. She was told she would do great things, that she is special and her spite and jealousy was used in order to get her to do things had her teachers not failed her, maybe she wouldn't have done.
Kipperlily will forever have the blood of her friends, of her party members, on her hands. She will never get rid of that shame, it will stain her hands, it will stain her legacy. She is nothing more than a villain in the history books now, when in reality she was a teenage girl who was failed over, and over again. She was a teenage girl who felt rage, and felt ashamed of her rage because she was told she needed to be kind, complicit. A sweet halfling girl, something she never was and never will be.
