Well, I'm back. I say as I return to my middle earth fixation, which is wonderful, I love it, but solely the books, and I'm also still going strong in Takahashi's xeno universe, so this is going to get busy
#im watching a xenogears playthrough because i cant focus enough to actually play it myself#my first time with it as well. finally getting around to it after saga and all the blade games... waiting for the dlc for 3#and im going to read the silmarillion. and i have so many of the other books. i just need to read them#all the lore#nortune was king of meh. fine but still. but bart is back and im happy about that (fei and elly just got to the Thames)#i want to read the 12 history of middle earth books as well after everything#i just want a completeish picture. it helps when i build my own worlds (focusing on music rather than religion or language)

im sorry if you've been asked this before, but do you have any advice on reading the silmarillion effectively? i last read it yeeeears ago, and to this day i still dont know how people remember enough about the book to post about all the many many characters, let alone meme about them. i wanna join in on the fun but im intimidated. any tips? thanks so much!
I haven’t been asked before lmao!
The way I read it is I don’t try to just read it all in one go like a regular book. Think of it more in terms of being like the bible; you don’t read, you study.
Pick a verse. Then pick a chapter. Then get your flow going.
Stuff you don’t understand? Stop reading for a bit and get on google. Then go back once it’s sunk in. Or ask someone who knows the book REAALLLLLY well. I usually ask my father lmao.
A lot of it involves googling.
Another good strategy is to pick a character and read all the bits featuring said character.
So I don’t tend to read the silmarillion in completely linear format; I do a chaos on it and end up with a silmarillion-shaped mindmap in my head.
(Which is probably the most Melkor thing I could have done and other silm fans would probably whip me before the peasantry and send me off to the glue factory for it)

tagged by @plothooksinc and @sroloc--elbisivni ! Finally have a chance to sit down at my desk - only to procrastinate! lmao TY for the opportunity!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
75! I have probably ten or so more that i never crossposted from ffdotnet, but they're all Old! Given that FF took a huge L and was apparently down for several days, I might find incentive to move them. but! unlikely 🤣
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
815,373!
Nicole Shut the Fuck Up Challenge: FAILED lmao
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Actively: I'm trying to write various stuff for risetmnt, usagi yojimbo, and digimon adventure/02.
Not actively, published:
Voltron: Legendary Defender (24) One Piece (Anime & Manga) (13) Luca (2021) (5) 僕のヒーローアカデミア | Boku no Hero Academia | My Hero Academia (Anime & Manga) (3) Digimon Adventure Zero Two | Digimon Adventure 02 (3) Digimon Adventure (2) Raven Cycle - Maggie Stiefvater (2) 鬼滅の刃 | Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (Anime) (2) 幽☆遊☆白書 | YuYu Hakusho: Ghost Files (Anime & Manga) (2) The Hobbit - All Media Types (2) Yuri!!! on Ice (Anime) (1) Saiyuki (Anime & Manga) (1) Avatar: The Last Airbender (Cartoon 2005) (1) The Silmarillion and other histories of Middle-Earth - J. R. R. Tolkien (1) The Adventure Zone (Podcast) (1) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom (1) Animaniacs (1) Zootopia (2016) (1) Gravity Falls (1)
Basically if I watch or read something and the brainworms get me for even a moment i will write at least one (1) fic for it! Even though I may not finish or even post it! 😆 Occasionally it becomes a whole mental illness (STILL cannot believe i pumped out 24 goddamn fics for voltron. What a time to be alive LMAO)
4. Top five fics by kudos?
the hard beat of her heart - 1,982!
WOW i didn't realize its had almost 2k now thats crazy af. My Bakugo and his Mom fic is THE banger!
so low you can hear - 1,866!
another holy fuck moment, this one is pretty surprising bc its a much older lunami fic but i saw a huge influx after OPLA so 🤣
tired and emotional - 1,466
my drunk teenagers vld fic had big hits, such as Pidge 'scrambling like a racoon' and two idiots (klance) eating eachothers faces under a public table and then fist-fighting their feelings! Not shocked that its up there bc it was super fun to write
i go there with you - 1,351
this started as mindlessly filling Wumptober prompts and escalated almost immediately into Whatever The Hell It Is Now and i love it dearly! hope i can finished it sometime...! 💀
maybe if it left a mark -1,295
ppl ate this one UP when i posted it and i still get pretty regular feedback for it so i'm not especially surprised that it's still hanging onto top 5 after all this time! its one of my favs too!
5. Do you respond to comments?
Not often 😭 Listen it takes all of my energy just to get the darn thing Written. I have a lot going on IRL, and i'm also horrible anxious about being Annoying 🧍♀️ so I just yeet things into the void 😅 told to be quiet to many times as I child w adhd and now I'm a traumatized adult who simultaneously doesn't know how to shut up but also catastrophises basic interactions. Rip
Anyway i DO read and cherish every single review/comment and they never fail to perk up my days!! obviously i reread them pretty regularly, and I love and appreciate yall!! 💜 sorry im awkward!
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
i'm more of a hurt/COMFORT girlie, so idk if any of my endings are SAD persay? Maybe a lil melancholy. maybe soul deep???
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
THIS is my cup of tea so it's: most of them 🤣 But significantly its my ooey gooey wedding finale for ANAFW
8. Do you get hate on fics?
got hate for a digimon fic i wrote abt Tai and Kari where someone was like 'this has so many red flags' and I was like Bro you don't show your siblings physical affection? Skill issue.
9. Do you write smut?
writing (and reading) smut is pretty new for me bc i'm on the sex-repulsed side of aro/ace but SOMETIMES !!!fictional!!! romance ETC compels me enough that i'm like Hm Lemme try that. I like to expand out of my comfort zones every now and then, so it's usually a turbulent but interesting exercise 🤣
MOST of the "spicy" stuff I write, I would consider pretty tame tbh? (or not very good 💀) I'm sorta vague on purpose, so if you come in expecting some delicious smut or something I am so sorry that that is not the part that interests me 💀💀
Someone who worked on Steven Universe said that Peridot's fixation on romance/shipping was "archeological" because she's aspec af and d'you know what I'm feelin it!
I love a dig site!
Makes no goddamn sense! Compells me tho.
10. Craziest crossover?
don't think i have a single one in my repertoire YET AS I TYPE THAT OUT i realize usagi yojimbo/tmnt is technically a cross-over! Even if it is a sort of canon one? not sure it counts asfkjhlklf I was gonna say that they don't usually interest me. Clown face emoji
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
if i have, no one has pointed it out!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
yes! I get requests pretty often to translate my fics and i'm fine with that as long as they link back to the original! i'm also fine if they don't i guess lmao what am i, the police?
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No, I write The Most self-indulgent crap 24/7 3/65 and i will not hand any of the reigns to someone else rip. Love to brainstorm with others tho That's what makes the brain go brrrrrrrrr
14. All time favourite ship?
ugh its KLANCE, tormented me for like 5+ years and changed my brain chemistry for the better. I'm cringe but im free!
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
*stares in 300+ WIPS* maybe that super long bagginshield fic
OH and that anafw timetravel sequel where Lance got pulled into the past/an adjacent timeline and nearly died about it. literally. THAT baby was angsty! rip
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue! And characterization!
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Chain of Events....! I don't know her 😭😭😭😭 Someone please introduce us. Also having too many ideas for the way a scene could play out and being paralyzed by Which is the Best One.
18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
Sparingly and with Purpose!
19. First fandom you wrote in?
I know in my heart it was self-insert Dragon Ball Z when I was in like, middle school
20. Favourite fic you've written?
gonna list a top 5 bc I can't pick ONE salfjasdlkf
coyote - idk i fuckin LOVE how this one came together, i go back and read it sometimes and im like damn.
small impressions on his heart - this one makes me SO SOFT @ alberto Get Cherished, Idiot
steam: - THE underrated op fic of mine, its my FAV and no one else agrees! Tragedy!
as tenacious as dandelion weeds - i loved writing feral inosuke and his dumb backwards attitude. idk i love a soft one!
salvagable - truly my comedic prowess peeked with EGG SAUCE AND BREADED nothing else will ever compare
.
Imma tag: @big-meows @goodlucktai and anybody else no pressure who also needs ten minutes of procrastination to yell abt their stuff 💜

i haven't read the silmarillion or anything related but i was wondering how do elves's fëas work?? like i read somewhere about them sharing this fëa bond with people they marry so their fëas meet and that's what makes the marriage marriage in the first place. but im not really sure about that, don't people's fëas normally touch even if they're not married? and what happens if they do touch? this is weirdly specific but im just curious,,,you don't have to answer if you don't want to ofc! thank you if you do answer my curiosities haha and you still don't, ty too! (i asked you this bc i feel like you have a lot of knowledge about elfs)
Hey anon! So, a lot of what you're talking about is fanon, though it does have basis in canon. From "Laws and Customs among the Eldar" we learn about fëar and hröar and elvish (largely Noldorin, to be specific) marriage customs.
It's worth noting, though, that LaCE underwent many revisions and is a highly dubious document as it was written in-universe by Aelfwine, a mortal from the 9th century CE who found the Straight Road to Valinor. That concept in and of itself is a framing device for Tolkien's "translation" of the Red Book into English, and isn't one he kept consistent throughout his writing or one he was ever fully satisfied with - it never made it into the texts published within his lifetime, and doesn't make an appearance in the published Silm, either. And as I said in a previous meta dealing with LaCE:
Maybe this is something Tolkien changed his mind on between writing LaCE and writing this section of what became the published Silm. Or maybe this is an in-universe distinction: the in-universe writer of LaCE is unclear but implied to be a human, not an elf, possibly Aelfwine; the writer of the Silm as we see it is Christopher Tolkien’s edits of JRRT’s translation of Bilbo’s translation of Noldorin loremasters, the chief of whom was Pengolodh. It’s complicated.
That being said:
LaCE doesn't actually offer that much information on the nature of elvish fëar in relation to marriage. We do get the quote that "It was the act of bodily union that achieved the marriage, and after which the indissoluble bond was complete." Since human concepts of marriage are mostly legal/social engagements, and by no means indissoluble, this strongly implies something different is going on with elven fëar when they marry, but it's not stated outright. Still, the wording of "bond" in relation to "marriage" gives rise to the fan-embellished concept of a "marriage bond" that is very popular in fic/meta about elf marriages.
This concept is further supported by the description that a "greater share and strength of their being, in mind and body" is required for elves to create children (when compared to Men). It implies a closeness between a married couple where their "minds" (aka fëar) are as involved in the child-making process as their bodies. Later it is specified that after marriage, elves remain individual people with individual "gifts of mind and body that differ" - a strange thing to emphasize if there was not the possibility for misconstruing married elves as becoming literally one being.
For elves, marriage is forever: the Valar state that "marriage resides ultimately in the will of the fëa." Yet later in the same paragraph, it is explained that elves who are re-embodied need to be married again, because marriage is also of the body and the first body had perished. Confusing!
There are more notes about fëar in this essay, and the concept is mentioned in other places as well, but that's the basic gist of the concept AFAIK. (I highly recommend perusing LaCE yourself if you're interested in this topic! And remember that this is fandom, you can accept or discard certain aspects of the document as you see fit. I know I do.)
Most of your questions deal in extrapolation from canon - I would argue there's a strong basis for the concept of a marriage bond in LaCE, but it's not explicitly spelled out. I can't give you firm answers, but here are my personal headcanons about fëar and bonds. Everything that follows is headcanon, unless I explicitly state otherwise.
Elves are born with bonds with their parents; these bonds are important for the health and happiness of a growing child. (There's another line in LaCE about how the parting of parents and children in their youth is "a grievous thing," which is my starting place for this particular headcanon.) I also think that they have bonds with their siblings, though this is less supported; I just think that living with and sharing parents with someone is likely to foster the slower/less formal creation of a bond. Twins, however, are born with strong bonds between one another, having shared a womb.
(I also think certain Unbegotten elves - aka the first 144 elves who awoke at Cuiviénen - came into being with bonds, thus allowing for Unbegotten elves to have siblings, like Elwë, Olwë, and Elmo. But you could also argue that, depending on how you deal with timelines, those three brothers are not Unbegotten and were born the "normal" way.)
Then there are chosen bonds. These are the kind we hear discussed (albeit vaguely) in LaCE. Marriage bonds specifically are formed when elves "unite in body" and invoke the name of Eru. My personal (aroace) take on this is that sex makes the process of bonding much easier and faster, the naming of Eru and the intent to bond is what's really important, so if a couple would rather not have sex they can still bond. And it also opens up room for debate on which specific sexual acts count when it comes to bonding, what would happen if Eru's name wasn't invoked, etc.
But I also think bonds can be created in contexts other than marriage - found family, for example. I've seen this most discussed in the context of Kidnap Dads, but it could apply in many scenarios: you decide you want X person to be part of your family, and that means you want to bond with them. In the case of orphaned children, if you go with the idea that they need a parent-child bond in order to develop properly, this could provide substitute/adoptive parents to fill that role. Or it could be that you feel like a certain person is your sibling, but you weren't born of the same parents, but you still want them to officially be your family, so you form a sibling-bond with them. These are bonds that occur without the ~physical union~, and therefore take more time and effort, and thus are less common - but they do happen.
All these bonds are basically the same in terms of function: they make ósanwë (mind-to-mind/telepathic communication) much easier and more natural, they connect two fëar together in an indissoluble way, they show a depth of commitment and love between the bonded eldar. But they are valued differently in society, and created/brought into being in different circumstances.
As for fëar "touching" - that is, in my opinion, poetic license for communication/closeness through such a bond. If you touch your spouse's fëa, for example, that's connecting with them to see how they're feeling, possibly passing along comfort or a message, etc. This "touching" is basically ósanwë, I guess? Which, in my headcanon, you can do if you're not bonded to someone, it just takes more effort and closer proximity if you don't have a bond in place.
Hope this helps, anon! Feel free to send in another ask if you have more questions!

Finally finished the Doriath crowd (some of them, at least). So the Doriath royal family + Daeron, Beleg, and Mablung!
this is gonna be long... why did i decide to make so many characters. the count is up to 72 now. 72. And I might add others like Oropher and Thranduil and Voronwë if, you know, i I feel like torturing myself
anyway
- i was honestly not going to include daeron, beleg, or mablung and then i realized that 80% of the reason im making this is so my friend, who is constantly lost about the silmarillion (yet valiantly tries to read the fanfics i rec) has a reference and even though these are mostly minor characters i was like... oh well time to draw them. i still quite enjoy the detail that the sindar look a lot like the noldor and most of them have black/brown hair so i gave him that + the typical doriath skin color bc im an idiot and forgot to add more genetic diversity to doriath aljdlkfdslkfds
- why does everyone draw beleg with silver hair????? i realize it might be 90% not caring that silver hair is usually a trait of thingol’s kin or i mean, he might also have silver hair on his own, but if that got described in the silm i completely didnt process it and so now im just so curious. is it canon?? is it fanon??? is it fanon so fanon it might be canon??? pls enlighten me
anyway regardless of the reason im really into silver haired beleg lmao. i went ahead and did it. he’s actually reffed from a real person for once! isn’t this guy just so hot??? i dont think i meant him to be beleg when i pinned the image but when i was trying to figure out how to draw beleg i saw it and i was just like!!! so i follow my thirsty brain instincts
*disney voice* now all of china knows you can’t ref
- mablung i have like zero mental image for but i finally realized i could like... use more than one skin color for doriath.... ..... ...... so i went ahead and did it. kinda inspired by a google search of his name tbh??? in related news if anyone is up for hearing me gush about dakkun39′s silm art at them for 30 minutes hit me up bc these were some of the first silm fanarts i ever saw and they STAYED WITH ME i LOVE the piece with galariel at the first kinslaying like THAT SHAPED HOW I SAW THAT ENTIRE SCENE and the first time i saw it i had no idea who any of these people were i LOVE IT 100% that’s my entire galadriel look headcanon. im also quite fond of their haleth and all of their maedhros pieces are amazing as well
*cough* moving on
- i’ve done thingol melian and luthien so moving onto beren... uhhh idk about beren im always torn between ‘scruffy forest man hasn’t bathed in a decade’ and ‘handsome rugged dude’ and i landed far away from both but im okay with this?? the real question is why he’s blond. normally i picture him with dark hair?? i think i should blame the internet for telling me his hair in canon is blond cuz i... do... try and respect canon... usually.....
- i really love this one hc that dior the fair looks like beren hahaha. he looks enough like luthien that ppl can praise the resemblance, but truthfully he much more closely resembles Young Handsome Lordling Beren. i feel like i messed up his eyes but i’ll... fix that in post production
- nimloth!!! another person i have no headcanon for except “dark hair question mark” i used the opportunity to try and draw a cool headdress i saw on pinterest... with dubious results.... also curious that she wears a crown/headdress and dior doesn’t...
- elured and elurin!!! i had to draw them as kids for obvious reasons :’c they’re wearing simple child clothing i guess, and have silver hair bc they’re elu’s heirs so im guessing that to ear that title when they’re like, 6, they must resemble great grandpa a bit (also im quite fond of the silver haired elu twins hc)
- conversely, elwing resembles melian! not actually a headcanon i had but it really worked here???? also i like that out of all of melian’s descendents besides luthien (who is always an outlier and should not be counted), elwing is the one that actually uses maia-adjacent powers (i do like the idea that the power to transform was somewhere inside of her, and ulmo helped bring it out. im not sure a normal elf would survive literally turning into a bird).
i actually drew like, 4 different versions of elwing. there’s child elwing, adult elwing with nauglimir, bird elwing, and adult elwing without nauglimir
in related news, i now need to draw earendil with the silmaril forehead lamp to make everything consistent
- the one thing i’ve learned from this is that even with refs i cant draw kids ahahahah... something to practice on i guess
- also in case anyone was curious ive now finished 57 characters. the only remaining elves that are currently on the list (aka: the house of finwe. tho knowing me im prooobably gonna add voronwe... *sigh*) are gil-galad, gwindor (boyfriends and spouses count as part of the house, right? of course they do thats why i drew them), arwen, elladan and ellohir (mostly bc im still debating whether to give them the noldor background color or the sindar bg color), and glorfindel and echtelion who are not part of the house of finwe (tho they might be depending on the headcanon) but are relevant enough imma draw them anyway. the remaining rest are humans (me, biased?? nooooo)
#silmarillion#the silmarillion#silm#luthien#beren#thingol#melian#dior eluchil#nimloth#elured#elurin#elured and elurin#elwing#daeron#beleg#beleg strongbow#mablung#fun fact you gotta search dior eluchil or else you get dior the brand#silm abridged art#now that im using up the last elves my motivation is flagging#alkjfdskld#also now most of the first age elves are done#U.U those are my faves

hii hello how are you? and woo okay here we go <33 pages, edition, stack, dream (although i think i have a fair idea of that just from seeing you around in the spotify friends bar but maybe just something you're into lately?) and history? :]
hellooo i'm not so bad i just got off like an hour long phone lesson because i have a speaking test tomorrow also im doing two tests later today so that's something but other than that not too bad :') how about you? (also thank you for the asks as always<3<3)
i. pages: one book you're currently reading
hamlet! surprisingly have never read it before but i'm liking it so far :-)
ix. edition: perfect condition hardbacks or dog-eared paperbacks with broken spines?
oh dog-eared paperbacks with broken spines absolutely<3
xii. stack: how many books are you currently reading?
if you asked me this just a couple of months ago i would have said like. twenty books but i've since cleared out my currently reading and i try not to pick up any new ones unless i've finished them,, (which is technically a much better habit but i do miss reading so many books at once) so currently just two: the amazing adventures of kavalier and clay & hamlet
xvii. dream: what do you listen to, to fall asleep?
oh ummm then you might have a better idea because now i can't think of anything-- but i guess usually some classical, misc soundtracks & mitski?
xix. history: oldest book you own?
hmm tbh i don't really collect vintage books because i feel like i wont take good care of them or think them too delicate to actually read but i'll go check,,, ok i'm back and these are the ones i could find:
crime and punishment by fyodor dostoevsky (1963)
the silmarillion by j.r.r. tolkien (1979) (not quite as old but i couldnt not include it)
the adventures of gerard by arthur conan doyle (1969)
the tenant of wildfell hall by anne brontë (1970) :-)
dark academia asks!

Further reactions to "The book of lost tales":
I appreciate that Idril canonically wears armor and does swordfighting.
I feel like I can actually imagine adult!Idril much better now like in armor and with open hair, distraught but ready to fight while babby Earendil does not yet realize the danger...
My first thought is that Earendil was probably cute in that baby chainmail. My second thought is OUCH, Idril and Tuor always made sure their growing baby had fitting chainmail cause they felt the apocalypse might get them at any moment. Imagine that, imagine them having the baby armor fitted every year or so :(
Its fun how much of the basic structure already exists but most of what you'd consider the main characters doesn't exist or is scattered across various minor roles The only Prince anywhere in sight is Turgon - Except for Team Doriath, theyre all accounted for. I suppose Maeglin is kinda there in name only with vaguely the same role & motivation, but looks personality and background all did a 180 since. Luthien is still pretty much "princesd classic" at this point, not quite the fearless go-getter from the final version - markedly this version tells Beren that she doesnt want to wander in the wilderness with him whereas the final one says she doesnt care and its Beren still wants to get the shiny so as not to ask this of her and also for his honor.
I mean in the finished version Id consider the 3rd and 4th gen royals to be the main characters (well, alobgside Team Doriath and the varioud human heroes) and theyre hardly here. Imagine the silm with no Finrod!
Feanor had no affiliation with the royal family whatsoever, and is also generally less super. He's just the guy who won the jewelsmithing competition, not the inventor of the whole discipline. Still seems to have been envisionad as a respected member of the community who gets called to the palace for crisis meetings and is listened to when he stsrts giving speeches. From the first he already has the backstory of going off the deep end (or at least growing disillusioned with Valinor) after a family member is killed by Melkor and theyre still the first to die, but its just some other rando unrelated to the royals
The situation regarding the humans is different - instead of Melkor leaking their existence, its Manwe who explains that the other continents were supposed to be for them eventually. So Feanor goes off on a tirade about weak puny mortals comes off as a more of a jerk unlike in the final version where Melkor barely knew about the humans and described them to the Noldor as a threat. On the other hand in this one, also very much unlike in the finished product, Melkor dupes even Manwe into being unfair to the elves as a whole. In this the final version is a definite improvement, both Feanor and the Valar come off as a lot more sympathetic and though still deceived he's partially right in some things at least, so you have more of a genuine tragedy rather than a simple feud
There is something to the idea of Commoner!Feanor tho. I guess some of this survived in his nomadic explorer lifestyle and how both his wife and mother (who arent mentioned here) eventually were the ones to get that background of being not especially pretty ladies who are not from the nobility but got renown, respect and acclaim for their unique talent and contribution to society, with each having invented things and Nerdanel also being renowed for her wisdom. Hes sort of an odysseus-like Figure in that sense. I suppose later developements necesitated that Maedhros & co. have an army not just a band of thieves, which means they needed to be nobles/lords. That said this being a society where artisans are very respected and half the lords have scholarly/artistic pursuits going, the gap was probably not as big to begin with as it might have been in say, medieval England. Esoecially since Nerdanel's father had been given special honor by one of the local deities and that the social order might have been a very recent thing in Miriel's time. One might speculate that the first generation of Lords started out as warriors during the great journey, or perhaps just Finwe's friend group.
Also found that bit intetesting where the Valar have to deal with the remaining political tensions and effects of Melkor's lies on the remaining population in Valinor... - i guess with the change of framing device it was less likely for news of something like this to reach Beleriand. That, or the existence of Finarfin and his repentance made this go smoother this over in later cannon
Turgon's go-down-with-the-ship moment reaaly got to me. Im half tempted to write a fic where his wife, siblings and dad glomp him on arrival in Mandos. I dont care that none of them exists yet in this continuity i want Turgon to get hugs
I love all the additional Detail that got compressed out in the shift from fairytale-ish to pseudohistoric style especially all the various Valinor magic insofofar as it is compatible with the final version - particularly love the idea of the connection between the lamps and the trees that is now integrated into my headcanon forever
Its actually explained what the doors of night are
If I had not already read unfinished tales or volumes X to XII where this is also apparent, this is where I would say: Ah so the Valar were supposed to be flawed characters. Manwe has an actual arc; by the time he sends Gandalf he finally "got" it. I think in the published silm the little arcs of Ulmo and Manwe are mostly just lost in compression/ less apparent when only some of the relevant scenes got in but not all
It occurred to me way too late that the "BG" chars are the most consistent because theyre at the start and most stories are written from beginning to end. Finwe doesnt get a dedicated paragraph of explicit description until HoME X but my takeaway was that he's described pretty much like I always imagined him anyways/ same vibe I always got from him... charismatic, thoughtful, enthusiastic, sanguine temperament, brave in a pinch but at times lets his judgement be clouded by personal sentiment (though that last bit is more apparent/salient as a character flaw once he became the father of a certain Problem Child) ...i guess this would be a result of jrrt having had a consistent idea of him in his head for a long time.
This means Finwe's still alive at the time of the exodus which is just fun to see/interesting to know... Interestingly he sort of gets what later would be Finarfin's part of ineffectually telling everxone to please chill and think it over first while Feanor simply shouts louder (which is consistent with his actions before the sword incident in later canon where he initially spoke out against the suspiciozs regarding the Valar) - but its not exactly the same, he's more active than Finarfin later in that when "chillax" availed nothing he said that then at least they should talk with the other Kings and Manwe to leave with their blessing and get help leaving (This seems like it would have been the clusterfuck preventing million dollar suggestion in the universe where Feanor is related to him and values him) but when even that falls on death ears he decides that he "would not be parted from his people" and went to run the preparations. I find it interesting that the motivation is sentiment/attachment (even phrased as "he would not be parted from [his people]" same words/ expression as is later used for the formenos situation), not explicitly obligation as it later is for Fingolfin (who had promised to follow Feanor and didnt want to leave his subjects at the mercy of Feanor's recklessness )
Speaking of problem children. It seems the sons of Feanor were the Kaworu Nagisa of the Silmarillion in that originally all they do is show up at some point and kill Dior as an episodic villain-of-the-week. And then, it seems their role got bigger in each continuity/rewrite... probably has something to do with the Silmarils ending up in the title later making it in the sense their story that ends and begins with them. They have zero characterization beyond "fierce and wild" at this point, though in what teetsy bits there is we already have the idea that Maedhros is the leader and Curufin is the smart one/shemer/sweet-talker, though not the bit where Maedhros (or Maglor, or anyone really) is "the nice one". Which I guess explains why "Maglor" sounds like such a stereotypical villain name.
"The Ruin of Doriath" was purportedly the patchworkiest bit of the finished product, but I never noticed and it actually left quite an impression of me upon first reading, the visual of Melian sitting there with Thingol's corpse in her arms contemplating everything thinking back to how they met... she had the knowledge to warn him not to doom himself but couldnt get him to understand it because he doesnt see the world as she does.... After reading this though I wish there was a 'dynamic' rendition that combined all the best bits like, youd have to adapt it to the later canon's rendition of the dwarves, have Nargothrond exist etc. But i mean that just makes Finrod another dead/doomed relative of Thingol's whom bling cannot truly replace, like Luthien and Turin. In the Silmarillion you could easily read it as just an "honoured guest treatment" but here and in unfinished tales I get the impression that Thingol actually did see Turin as a son.
Already you see the idea of trying to make the stories all interconnected but there is less than there will be (the human heroes aren't related yet and there is basically no Nargothrond, which is later a common thread for many of the stories - a prototype shows up in the 'Tale of Turambar' tho complete with half baked prototypes of Orodreth and Finduillas
O boi im not even through yet

The Elf Lord who brought Dior the Silmaril; what was going through his head?- Commentary
I’m not making anyone read my snark, but it’s under the cut
The Passage in question:
“There came a night of autumn, and when it grew late, one came and smote upon the doors of Menegroth, demanding admittance to the King. He was a lord of the Green-Elves hastening from Ossiriand, and the door-wards brought him to where Dior sat alone in his chamber; and there in silence he gave to the King a coffer, and took his leave.” The Silmarillion, Of the Ruin of Doriath.
Relationship with the Sons of Fëanor
“But the victory of the Elves was Dear-bought. For those of Ossiriand were light-armed, and no match for the Orcs, who were shod with iron and iron-shielded and bore great spears with broad blades; and Denethor was cut off and surrounded upon the hill of Amon Ereb. There he fell and all his nearest kin about him, before the host of Thingol could come to his aid. Bitterly though his fall was avenged, when Thingol came upon the rear of the Orcs and slew them in heaps, his people lamented him ever after and took no king again. After the battle some returned to Ossiriand, and their tidings filled the remnant of their people with great fear [if I had a dollar for everytime the writings implied Green-Elves were cowards, I’d have about $6 because there’s so little written about them], so that thereafter they came never forth in open war, but kept to themselves by wariness and secrecy; and they were called Laiquendi, the Green-elves, because of their raiment of the color of leaves. But many went North and entered the guarded realm of Thingol and were merged with his people.1”
“...And the Orcs took the fortress upon the west slopes of Mount Rerir, and ravaged all of Thargelion, the land of Caranthir; and they defiled Lake Helevorn. Thence they passed over Gelion with fire and terror and came into East Beleriand. Maglor joined Maedhros upon Himring; but Caranthir fled and joined the remnant of his people to the scattered folk of the hunters, Amrod and Amras, and they retreated and passed Ramdal in the south [see!! Literally right here, in my previous post I bitched about this--no one else is written like that!!]. Upon Amon Ereb they maintained a watch and some strength of war, and they had the aid of the Green-Elves; and the Orcs came not into Ossiriand, nor to Taur-im-Duinath and the wilds of the south.2”
“...and the sons of Fëanor wandered before the wind. Their arms were scattered, and their league broken; and they took to a wild life and woodland life beneath the feet of Ered Lindon, mingling with the Green-Elves of Ossiriand…3”
“The Nelyar [Teleri] were most reluctant to leave their lakeside homes; but they were very cohesive, and very conscious of the separate unity of their Clan (as they continued to be), so that when it became clear that their chieftains Elwe and Olwe were resolved to depart and would have a large following, many of those among them who had at first joined the Avari went over to the Eldar rather than be separated from their kin. The Ñoldor indeed asserted that most of the ‘Teleri’ were at heart Avari, and that only the Eglain*** really regretted being left in Beleriand.” After writing about the Tatyar (Noldor who remained in Middle-Earth) and their bitterness towards the Noldor, Christopher Tolkien writes, “This ill-feeling descended in part from the bitterness of the Debate before the March of the Eldar began, and was no doubt later increased by the mechanisms of Morgoth; but it also throws some light upon the temperment of the Ñoldor in general, and Fëanor in particular, Indeed the Teleri on their side asserted that most of the Ñoldor in Aman itself were in heart Avari, and returned to Middle-Earth when they discovered their mistake; they needed room to quarrel in.11**”
Amon Ereb is where the Green-Elves buried their king and lamented him ever after. During Dagor Bragollach, Ambarussa and Caranthir flee to Amon Ereb, where they “maintained a watch and some strength of war.” There’s two ways this can be: We can ignore the line “had the aid of the Green-Elves;” Since the Quenta Silmarillion was written in universe and has been revised in universe, you can say that that’s not an accurate retelling. You could instead say that since there is a War going on, the Feanorians just built there and the Green-Elves feared the retaliation of Murderers. Following that, even if this were not the case and the Green-Elves were understanding, there is bound to be some dissent or some begrudging feelings for building a fortress on their beloved kings grave. The other option is to accept the line and say that the Green-Elves allowed them to build there. This would imply that they have a phenomenally good relationship with the Sons of Fëanor (or at least 4, 6 & 7) to allow them to build on Denethor's grave. Though I do not think the first option is liable since the Green-Elves attended the Feast of Reuniting, when Thingol only sent two Elves in his stead. In addition to this, The Sons mingled with the Green-Elves after the Fifth Battle, which if canon is to be believed and that “a stranger might pass through their land from end to end and see none of them4,” If the Green-Elves didn’t want to mingle, they wouldn’t have. The next mention of their location (in the published Silmarillion) is after the Elf Lord brought the Silmaril to Doriath, when they were gathered again from their wandering,” so while it’s not explicit that both the Sons of Fëanor and the Silmaril were both within the borders of Ossiriand at the same time, it is implied [👀]. Though it seems that there is some bitterness between the Teleri and Noldor [I wonder how different their familial structures are--the Teleri stick together and that’s extremely important to them. There also seem to be excpetions to this since the Teleri are on both sides of the sea… and I’m not saying that family isn’t important to the Noldor (look at Finwë’s family), but when given the choice, a large majortiy left their families behind or left them to cross the Ice]. Though the Lindi* are a subsection of the Teleri, they are (along with the Avari), often an afterthought in writings [I’m not kidding--WJ/374 “...when the [Elves of Aman] spoke of the Eldalie, “the Elven-Folk,” he meant vaguely all the races of Elves, though [they] were probably not thinking of the Avari.”], so I am unsure if the second quote could apply to the Green-Elves or if C. Tolkien was specifically referring to the Tatyar. Regardless though, it seems to me that the Noldor and Teleri have something in common--they’re both Avari at heart and love Middle-Earth. [what’s so great about Aman anyway :/ clearly not much, if the majority of elves wanted to stay/ returned and only left for Aman when the Elves were *dying*]. Though the Second Kinslaying takes place after the events asked about, I’m going to touch on it briefly as well. Specifically, how “...[the Teleri] were very cohesive, and very conscious of the separate unity of their Clan (as they continued to be), so that when it became clear that their chieftains Elwe and Olwe were resolved to depart and would have a large following, many of those among them who had at first joined the Avari went over to the Eldar rather than be separated from their kin.” Teleri don’t like to be seperate from their families and don’t do so lightly; this, to me, implies a high emphasis on family compared to the other clans. The Sons of Feänor, who they gave safe harbor to and allowed to build on their kings grave, really spit in Green-Elves of Ossiriand’s face when they killed their close kin in Doriath. [Big Yikes]
Relationship with the Sindar
“But the victory of the Elves was Dear-bought. For those of Ossiriand were light-armed, and no match for the Orcs, who were shod with iron and iron-shielded and bore great spears with broad blades; and Denethor was cut off and surrounded upon the hill of Amon Ereb. There he fell and all his nearest kin about him, before the host of Thingol could come to his aid. Bitterly though his fall was avenged, when Thingol came upon the rear of the Orcs and slew them in heaps, his people lamented him ever after and took no king again. After the battle some returned to Ossiriand, and their tidings filled the remnant of their people with great fear, so that thereafter they came never forth in open war, but kept to themselves by wariness and secrecy; and they were called Laiquendi, the Green-elves, because of their raiment of the color of leaves. But many went North and entered the guarded realm of Thingol and were merged with his people.1”
“...Of those Nandor who took refuge in Doriath after the fall of Denethor is it said; ‘In the event they did not mingle happily with the Teleri of Doriath, and so dwelt mostly in the small land Eglamar, Arthórien under their own chief. Some of them were “darkhearted,” though this did not necessarily appear, except under strain or provocation.’ [this is called “being normal.” We all have a dark side that appears under strain of provocation. Maybe they’re noted as such because everyone keeps being a dick] ‘The chief of the “Guest-elves,” as they were called, was given a permanent place in Thingol’s council…7”
I’m going to paraphrase this next bit by a lot, since it’s a couple pages worth of material11…
Celben: the Sindarin equivalent of Kalaquendi; all Elves other than the Avari and includes the Sindar. It is also equivalent to Eldar (Q.) and Elloi (T.)
Morben: Originally only referred to the Avari, but as other Children became known, it came to mean “Anyone dwelling outside Beleriand, or entering their realm from the outside.” “The first people of this kind to be met were the Nandor...when the Nandor were recognized as kinsfolk of Lindarin origin and speech, they were received into the class of Celbin.” However, later in Note 9 which discusses Eöl and Maeglin, “Some of the Nandor, who were allowed to be Celbin, [*allowed??* wtf is this? Is this a VIP club??] were not any better,” is written and the Note goes on to discuss Saeros.
“Now word went swiftly among the Elves of Ossiriand that a great host of dwarves bearing gear of war had down out of the mountains and passed over Gelion at the Ford of Stones. These tidings came soon to Beren and Lúthien; and in that time also a messenger came to them out of Doriath telling of what had befallen there. Then Beren arose and left Tol Galen, and summoning to him Dior his son they went north the river Ascar; and with them went many of the Green-Elves of Ossiriand...In that battle by Sarn Athrad Beren fought his last fight, and himself slew the Lord of Nogrod, and wrested from him the Necklace of the Dwarves; but he dying laid his curse upon all the treasure. Then Beren gazed in wonder on the selfsame jewel Fëanor that he has cut from Morgoths iron crown, now shining set amid gold and gems by the cunning of the dwarves; and he washed it clean of blood in the waters of the river. And when all was finished the treasure of Doriath was drowned in the river Ascar, and from that time the river was named anew, Rathlóriel, the Golden Bed…5”
The Green-Elves and the Sindar are both a part of the Olwë’s Host that split off in Middle-Earth, albeit at different times. The Green-Elves had the “Friendship of Thingol,6” and “were welcomed by Thingol as kin long lost that return, and they dwelt in Ossiriand, the Land of Seven Rivers.1” Tolkien writes that his fall was “bitterly avenged,” so Thingol probably held Denethor himself in high regard. Some even merged with his people in Doriath. However, there is more to this story. “In the event,” is not an often encountered phrase but “In the event that” is, so myself and others were confused at this wording. As it turns out, the phrase means that after discussing what could’ve been, you’re now discussing what actually happened. “In the end,” “as it happened,” and “as it turned out,” are synonymous with “in the event.8” So this means that the majority of the Green-Elves who migrated to Thingol’s kingdom were unhappy within his kingdom, [and they likely wouldn’t’ve been able to leave...and where would they’ve gone? To the Noldor who Thingol hated and wouldn’t allow them to leave to join or their kin in Ossiriand who hold family in such high regard?] and though they had a permanent seat on his council, they were also called “Guest-Elves,” which likely alienated them more. I also want to discuss the classes of Calben and Morben; At first it does seem to follow the published Silmarillion--that all of the Green-Elves were welcomed as kin and subsequently, entered into the class of Celben. I don’t think that is the case anymore; I think instead, the ones who merged with Doriath were “allowed” to become Celben and those who returned to Ossiriand remained Morben [This really is a VIP club]. It could be, of course, that Green-Elves of Ossiriand are the only ones of the Lindi to hold the title of Celben--the rest of the Lindi throughout Middle-Earth are Morben. Moving on though, the Guest-Elves probably seldom left Doriath and weren’t in much contact with their kin in Ossiriand, so it’s difficult for me to say how this impacted Ossiriand Green-Elve’s and Sindar’s relationship; it seems that there was a very dichotomous relationship between them. [read: I just think the Sindar are a fickle bunch] But! Either way, the Green-Elves in and out of Doriath are kin and while that may have caused some tension--Teleri don’t like to be separated from their family and don’t do so lightly--they are still *kin* and would not take too kindly to their families being slaughtered over a jewel. I think that the Sack of Doriath would be enough “strain or provocation” to bring about their “dark heartedness.” [tbh, I don’t think any Elf would, but other than people being dicks, they gotta get their “dark hearted” reputation from somewhere lol]
Curses, Dooms and Prophecies in the Legendarium
And when all was finished the treasure of Doriath was drowned in the river Ascar, and from that time the river was named anew, Rathlóriel, the Golden Bed…5” [The Elven forces didn’t take many casualties, but would’t they want wergild? Also, other then Beren being Tolkien’s SI or revenge, why would the Green-Elves want to fight? They seldom engage in open war, and don’t like strangers so??? Is this apart of their alliance with Doriath if they had one? Did they hate Dwarves that much? Did they want gold? What the fuck is up???]
I will not write out every curse, doom or prophecy. I am only going to list them. [there are so many, I didn’t even list them all…] The point of me listing all of these out is to show just how much power these types of things have in the Tolkien Legendarium and even if they are a self-fulfilling prophecy, they tend to come true in some way.
The Doom of Mandos
Mîm cursing Nargothronds treasure and the Nauglamir(in some variations)
The Dead Men of Dunharrow
The Curse of Morgoth; "the shadow of my thought shall lie upon them wherever they go." And the events after Húrins release
Eöl’s curse “...Here you may yet die the same death as I.”
Beleg to Túrin; “If I stayed beside you, love would lead me, not wisdom.”
Melian to Túrin; “There is malice in this sword. The dark heart of the smith still dwells in it. It will not love the hand it serves; neither will it abide with you long.”
Glaurung to Túrin; “...but thou carest not for that Glad may thy father be to learn that he hath such a son; as learn he shall”
Melian to Thingol; “For you have either doomed your daughter, or yourself. And now is Doriath drawn within the fate of a mightier realm.”
Huans Fate
The Lord of Nargothrond cursing the treasures of Doriath and the Nauglamir
There is more, but I think you get the point.
I want to touch on how the River Ascar flows into the River Gelion and “...after Sirion Ulmo loved Gelion above all the waters of the western world.4” In addition to this, the Green-Elves of Ossiriand rely on their rivers, not only for the nourishment water provides but they also “lived in the protection of their rivers,7” meaning that they also relied on the rivers for protection. I also want to point out that Ascar is the most upstream river of Ossiriand. “Why does this matter,” you ask “What does this have to do with curses?” Well…. The meaning of Ascar is “rushing or imperious (moving forcefully or rapidly).10” In addition to the river's name signifying its nature, it’s also written that “...[the rivers] fell steeply and very swift from the Mountains of Ered Lindon.9” So there is no way that cursed gold is staying put. If the Green-Elves [and Ulmo] were upset at having cursed gold in their river, that they rely on for protection, imagine how upset they’d be if there was cursed gold in the Galion, that borders all of their land.
Personally, I think that if it were any other Elf-Lord, we would have had a different story. The Silmarillion has a tragic thing going on where, if a tragedy is prevented, another one would take its place. Here, if it was any other Elf who was in possession of the Silmaril, the Second Kinslaying may have been prevented, but the Silmaril wouldn’t go to Valinor.
The Sindar and Green-Elves seem to have a dichotomous relationship, where the Sindar seem to accept them as kin, but also refer to them as outsiders. The Noldor (specifically the Sons of Fëanor) and the Green-Elves seem to have a better relationship, but there is some old bitterness between the Noldor and Teleri and any good relationship would’ve been destroyed following the Second Kinslaying. But to answer your question, what was going through that Elf Lords head? I think it was something along the lines of "Ah! Cursed Jewelry that has poisoned our river and has been the cause of many deaths, better get this out of here before the Sons of Fëanor or my fellow Green-Elves who like them more than Doriath find me!"

*I don’t like the term Nandor and I refuse to use it unless I have to. It’s derived from the primitive elvish word “ndandō” which means, “one who goes back on his word or decision.” “Primitive elvish” is used by Paul Strack to describe the internal (fictional) evolution of elvish. “Lindi” is what the Green-Elves called themselves. [it seems like there’s at least 4 different ways to refer to them and I liked Lindi the best. One day I’ll finish my “Please call them anything else than Nandor” post.]
**I am aware that the quote continues to contrast this with the relations between Sindar, Green-Elves and other Avari elves, but this talks about the second age so I chose to not include it.
***”The Forsaken.” The Sindar named themselves this, but it only refers to Sindar who wanted to go to Aman but arrived late or looked for Elwë for too long. Círdan is their Lord and they are the most friendly towards the Noldor.

So this is me
Alright so I have been dealing with some stuff lately and I guess this is me putting it out there. Seeing if it will help.
There are a LOT of contributong factors and I don't feel like going through them all but basically I don't think I am the right kind of person to be a writer.
The thing I constantly see is "write the story you want to read" or "you dont need a lot of people to love your book, write it for you" and that doesnt make sense to me.
See a lot of you writers have favorite books and authors and series and stuff and I don't. I don't have someone I want to write like or books that inspire me. I don't actually WANT to read anything. Like I enjoy reading, dont get me wrong but I don't have something I search out. Not really.
I never think "Oh I could really just go for a sit and read some urban fantasy." I just dont. I read what comes across my tumblr feed and I take all of it about the same. When I go to the bookstore I don't look for stories, I don't. I go for like handbooks or encyclopedia type stuff, history books, lore books, that kind of stuff. I almost never buy those books either because even those I do not desire enough to actually own them.
So I can't write the story I want to read because that's nothing. There isn't anything I really actively desire to read. I want to make. I want to build worlds with history and myth and technology and everything.
But you need to have a story for people to care, you can't just throw down a bunch of worldbuilding and call it a day. The closest thing to that is the Silmarillion and that came AFTER four books in middle earth, Tolkien was dead by the time Silmarillion came out.
I just don't have that writer-wip relationship that everyone else has. I make worlds and characters and stories because I want them to mean something to others. I want others to be entertained and have fun in-jokes about the characters but that makes it impossible to have any motivation without a constant stream of external motivation that is frankly selfish and draining of everyone around me.
Basically everyone I know who writes is introverted and it's them and their story and they make the cutest couples. Their passion and joy bleeds in every word and every happenstance and it is a pleasure to bear witness to what they create just because they like being with their work.
Im not that. Im very extroverted. I love being around people. I NEED people, i need socializing and community. Me and my story, we are not close friends. There is no passion there for the narrative. Im making a gift, making something and just hoping someone else will like it but i have no idea who this gift is for and it sure isn't for me.
Maybe it's too many years as a GM. Because running a campaign is just that: it's making a story expressly for others to enjoy.
And this isnt about skill. I have made some terrible hand made gifts that bring me shame, there is no doubt about it. But it made someone happy so I don't have to think it's the best, it did its job.
Same for my stories. Im not getting down on myself and saying my writing isnt good enough. Its that I can't just write my story for my own sake, it's not for me.
Anyway I don't really know what I want from all this. I really didn't want to do this because I didn't want to just pity and guilt people into paying attention to me because that is SUPER messed up and nobody likes it.
But ive been thinking about just calling this whole writing thing done and over and if I do just call it here I want those few of you out there to know why.
Nothing happened to me or anything, I am just realizing I probably don't have the right temperament? Personality? Whatever, I'm just not the kind of person who becomes a writer.

so @1010meha tagged me, but it’s the last day before school, soooo ...
that 20 questions thing:
Name: Clara
Nickname: ummmm Mom maybe? also, my boss calls me Lock Ness (sounds like my last name), this dude in elementary school called me hessy, and idk what else
Zodiac: pisces (i always have to scroll all the way down to the bottom of those zodiac lists)
Height: still taller than @1010meha
Orientation: uuuuuuummmmmmmm . . . humans? probably? idk im like nine i don’t need to know yet
Fave Fruit: WATERMELON AND PINEAPPLE AND YES I LIKE PINEAPPLE ON PIZZA. HAWAIIAN PIZZA IS AMAZING also did u know that hawaiian pizza actually was created by a german guy living in canada it’s only called hawaiian cuz that was the brand one the can of pineapple
Fave season: fall - school hasn’t gotten super stressful yet, its right during marching season and fall play and school clubs haven't died yet and i don’t have to smell the semen trees in my school’s quad (yes semen trees are real and apparently thats what semen smells like - who says school doesn’t teach you the important stuff?)
Fave book: fuck this question. i love too many books. right now, the books within reach are Basket Case by Carl Hiaasen, J.R.R Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, and this chooseable-path version of Hamlet. also i read The Count of Monte Cristo this summer and i really liked that too
Fave Flower: i have literally never thought about this question. ever. except for now. i really like these ones
there are a ton in my neighborhood and they are tiny and come in a bunch of different colors. i couldn’t find what they are called
Fave Scent: this is really specific, but my dad has this leather jacket and he wears it outside in the winter when he goes to smoke in the evening. i don’t normally like the smell of cigarette smoke but it gets mixed into the smell of the leather and the smell of the night air and the rain and my dad. so, my fave smell is that jacket
Fave color: blue
fave animal: dogs? pigs? blobfish? the goats that freeze up when they get scared? idk
Coffee/tea/hot cocoa: all of it
Avg Hours of Sleep: like 7 1/2? depends on what part of the year
Cat or Dog person: more dogs than cats i think but i love both
fave fictional character: nope. not doing this. not today. ( i will say i usually like the “best friend” characters the most because i relate to them)
Number of blankets I sleep with: one giant ass comforter, with a second blanket when it gets cold
Dream Trip: i wanna go to France, mostly Paris and the south-western tip of the country, to see where my mom grew up and to better understand the culture i come from. From there take a side trip to Barcelona cuz fuck yeah, barcelona (I may or may not just really want to see caganers in public nativity scenes - look them up, you will not be disappointed). I also really wanna visit Ireland for the landscapes
Blog created: 2014 or 2015? fun fact: i made this blog to show the kind of weird shit @1010meha and friends drew on the whiteboards at school, then we both got lazy and stopped taking/sending/posting the pictures. there’s some good stuff on this blog though. now its just a personal blog
Number of followers: 20 (i think there’s at least two porn bots, but i’m too scared to check)
Random fact: i boast about my friends way too much, especially to people i’ve just met, and its probably really awkward. also i’ll start stalking @1010meha and @rynoske‘s social media accounts to show off their awesome work to my grandma, my other friends, my friend's parents, my parent’s friends, and that guy at trader joe’s. there’s also a fourth member of The Squad and i talk about her too much too, but the proof of her awesomeness isn’t really on the internet though
literally i don’t really have that many ppl to tag, so maybe my followers who aren’t bots? also @rynoske
#god why#why did i do this#also school starts tomorrow#yay#if anyone knows the name of the flower#plz tell me

I know approximately nothing about lotr and understand basically none of your posts about it, but it looks really interesting. Im so overwhelmed tho by the amount of content i have to consume to understand anything. Any tips on where/ how to start to get into canon? (Oh and the fandom too!?)
Oh absolutely! Yeah it can definitely look overwhelming at first especially when you have knowledge that there’s a whole lot of content to consume!
Like with the books alone, chronologically speaking, the order is The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, THEN finally getting to The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. However, I feel like that’s definitely not the order someone who’s reading them for the first time should read them in!!!! For me, I read The Hobbit first, then the main trilogy (this was all the way back when I was in middle school, haha whoops I feel old now) After that, I wouldn’t say someone even needs to read The Silmarillion, but if you end up really liking the other books and want to know the historical contexts of Middle Earth, then definitely go for it! But yea, I feel like if you’re gonna read it, read The Silmarillion last because it’s harder to get through if you don’t have an emotional investment in the world already, in my opinion.
After that, the movies are always fun! I thought the original Lord Of The Rings trilogy was really well done (be sure to watch the extended editions!) The Hobbit movies? Eh, not so much haha. They are fun to watch but they didn’t really click as well with me as the trilogy movies.
Here are some things I think should help:
If reading lots of text intimidates you, there are so many audiobooks out there!
You can definitely watch the movies first if you want, it might help get into the world better if you find that the original source material is overwhelming at first!
I track the Lord Of The Rings tag on tumblr, and that’s where I was getting a lot of my fandom content at first, or just from random reblogs of people I already followed who happened to like Tolkien stuff, but after a while you just kind of interact and follow more blogs that have a lot of that content on them if you’re looking for it!
That’s about all I can think of right now! If you ever find yourself getting into it, absolutely feel free to talk about it with me!

Ramblings #12
Ramblings #12: I’m not putting it under a read more this time cause i actually want people to see this
I have a bit of a problem. I'm doing things I like (video games, books, podcasts, etc...) and enjoying them, but some of it ends up not putting me in a good mood/making me happy. And, while fun, some of them can end up being somewhat stressful/disenheartening. And that's not great when combined with my school stress and social anxiety. I have had fun, but I don't think I've been in a good mood recently.
and like, while watching/reading/playing, i get sorta distracted, my mind going to intrusive thoughts (which have just been about me being tortured) or even just thinking about the Concept ‘Negative Thoughts’ ( and even if it’s just a concept of ‘Negative Thoughts’ i don’t want it being associated with a piece of content i like) or just constantly checking the time to figure out how much i have left.
I’ve been playing Overwatch, which I like, but the pressure of trying to earn loot boxes (especially since the event ends soon and I have other things I could be doing in the time im playing) and it really sucks when i lose (which is often, im not very good but all my opponents seem to be very good) and that really bums me out.
I finished watching a Danganronpa V3 Let’s play (slight spoiler warning, nothing specific but how i feel about it may be considered a spoiler to some people) and while I really liked the game and the characters (I have mixed feelings about the ending, but I think that’s how I should feel about it) and I enjoyed it. but im sad it’s over (and possibly the franchise, who knows) and that’s kinda got me down.
Been playing Shadow of War, really fun game (despite what everyone says), and while im having fun and doing well, i have been ending up losing my strongholds during the Shadow Wars, which sucks, and my good/favorite orcs have slowly been being killed off and managing them gets difficult and vaguely stressful.
and im planning on finally reading the Lord of the Rings books and the Silmarillion, but I haven’t even started and im already stressing about it, trying to figure out where i can fit it into my time and balance with other books i have to read and my podcasts as well.
okay in writing this i kinda figured out that it is just, while im enjoying each of these things, they all have unfortunate parts of it that end up, in combination, bumming me out and sort of stifling the normal enjoyment i get from them. so i gotta find something positive that makes me happy and doesn’t stress me out as much.
my weekend dnd sessions are great and serve that purpose, but there wasn’t any this weekend. and its only for 3 or so hours once a week. if only it was more frequent.
Fallen London kinda does that too, though some enjoyment is somehwat stifled by me trying to figure out how many more confessions i need to get Feducci’s Lance this Hallowmas.
Maybe Critical Role? i mean, the late times+length kinda stresses me, but normally it’s just good fun, not much stress. maybe.
maybe if i can get into a new fantasy book series? or continue one ive started. thats probably what might help best.
