Flames are a form of bullying. You're supposed to get upset, you're supposed to feel ashamed of your work, and you're supposed to be deeply sorry for having wasted this "high-status"[1] person's time with your inferior product (How very dare!). It helps to accept that 999 times out of 1000, the main reason you, as an author, would know this person from a bar of soap is because you'd recognise the soap.
Fortunately, most sites which allow comments will allow you to delete flames. You don't have to let them stand. I'd also suggest blocking the nincompoop who left 'em, as well (you'll be doing both them and you a favour, after all - they don't have to deal with the terrible imposition of your work showing up in their searches; you don't have to deal with them being unmannerly in your comments).
Alternatively, you can critique their criticism (if I'm feeling sufficiently picky, I'll go through and do a SPAG run on complaints left in comments, and leave them a grade out of ten - if they're going to leave me a middle-school style review, I'll give them a middle-school style grading). Oddly enough, the trolls who leave these sorts of reviews really don't like getting the same treatment right back again. They get all insulted and huffy and flounce off.
(Also, if you haven't got anonymous commenting turned off already, turn it off now. If people want to mail you a turd so badly, you're allowed to insist they leave a return address).
[1] Well, at least in their own opinion. See above comment re: distinguishing them from a bar of soap.
I wanna know where people have lately gotten the audacity to leave comments on fanfics talking about how much the fanfic sucked and negatively critiquing an author's fic like it's a published book review.
It pisses me off cause I've seen authors abandoned or delete their fics because of this.
You're getting fanfics for FREE! No one asked for your opinion.
I hope y'all know as authors we get email notifications when you comment so we see EVERY comment that's been left.
We also can see the negative reviews you leave when you bookmark our fics

Can I say something. I am still so mad about Good Omens season 3 being a 90 minute episode. Listen I understand what happened with Neil Gaiman and I am upset about it too but the thing is he stepped down from season three of Good Omens. He stepped down and the other writers know that season three was suposed to be and Amazon instead of making the third season of a show that is so beloved and has a cult following is reducing it to a 90 minute episode, and you know why they're doing it. Its not because of Neils allegations and we all know it. Good Omens is being fucking nerfed because its gay. Season two was filled with queer characters in the forefront, had an amazing representation of a disabled character, had trans character, gay characters, gender fluid characters, black gay characters, It was a GAY fucking show. and now its being killed. Componies are taking Neils allegations as an excuse to cancel queer shows.
Dead Boy Detectives was NUMBER ONE on netflix when it realized and I didn't see any promotion from Netflix or anything of the like. People LOVE the show and its fandom is still active and wants the show to return. But oh it got cancelled due to neils allegations and totally has nothing to do with the fact that the show features gay and POC main characters with amazing representation where their identity is not their whole personality. Netflix was just chomping at the bit to cancel a show like that because its not the cis straight white media that assholes say are the only shows that can exists.
The Sandman is from the same fucking universe as Dead Boy Detectives and I don't see it getting cancelled or reduced to a 90 minute episode. Because its not explicitly gay. Yeah all the fans love Hob and Dream and I do too but its not actually cannon. Producers LOVE queer coded characters to make lgbt+ viewers interested and still not have to actually be inclusive or anything and The Sandman has that. The Sandman was never questioned as the direction the show would take without Gaiman and is allowed to live. Fuck I mean Disney never said that they were taking Coraline down or anything of the like because ITS NOT GAY. All the shows and movies that don't explicitly have queer characters have been FINE this whole time, no one was killing American Gods, no one is touching Coraline because oh its a beloved film and I grew up on it, Well guess fucking what I know so many people that grew up on Good Omens and it was the first time they felt seen as a queer person, Good Omens has a cult following too and I my entire life have heard people talking about Good Omens as a show everyone needed to watch. But his gay shows that already have material written for its next season(Remember Dead Boy Detectives is a comic series as well) are being killed
So no its not because componies are supporting victims its pure homophobia that is the reason these shows are ending like this and I am still mad.

As someone who is both trans and has PTSD, honestly I related to ISTTVG more from a PTSD perspective than a trans perspective.
Like that movie is one of the few pieces of media that I can really relate to, as someone who had the sort of childhood/developmental trauma that means that no one can tell whether I'm autistic or if it's just PTSD. I went through the sort of childhood where I had to repress a lot of myself in order to survive it, and had I not met my current main partner there's a good chance that I would have spent a lot of my adult life continuing to repress who I am for the convenience of those around me. When I say I had to repress myself to survive, I mean to the extent that I did not think that I was capable of feeling anger until I turned 19 years old because I wasn't allowed to express or show anger so I repressed it to the point I didn't realize I had the capacity to feel it. And it was nice for once to see representation of someone who is also clearly repressing themselves to survive, who was so similar to how I used to be.
To me the movie encapsulates really the feelings of growing up in an abusive environment where I had to repress my personhood in order to survive and then transitioning to an adulthood where I still didn't have the support/resources/space to stop repressing because I was still just trying to survive, and the idea that while stopping repressing and allowing myself to exist as myself is scary and painful and difficult and even upsetting sometimes, if I don't do it I'm not going to be able to live a life I'm truly happy in.
And I know for a lot of people the thing that they're repressing is gender, and that in repressing their gender they end up repressing their sense of self. But for me it's like the opposite, my gender identity is something I repressed and didn't pay attention to because I was representing everything that's part of my selfhood and identity and what it is that makes me me. But I've been scared to talk about it because like it's clearly intended as an allegory for being trans and given the current state of discourse I'm scared of being blamed for stealing representation or whatever by saying it's good representation for my PTSD, but it really is such good representation of an experience I don't really see represented all that often
Fascinating. Thank you for sharing, anon!

Dear Lucanis,
I am formally writing to apologise for my criticism regarding your romance in Dragon Age: The Veilguard (tee em). You're perfectly fine as you are.
Excuse me while I do my time in the regret prison.

Look, the bottom line is this. You're gonna be wrong and fuck up sometimes, that's just how being human works. No matter what you mean or how much you care, sometimes, you're gonna do something or say something that hurts someone or perpetuates bigotry you don't believe in.
The goal isn't to do no wrong, that's an impossible standard. The mark of "a good person" isn't that they always do good, it's that they're willing to admit when they've failed, done wrong, made a mistake, and they're willing to course-correct when they do.
It's important that you're trying. It's okay to be the bad guy. You don't need to get defensive, you don't need to stake your identity in "person who never does that kind of wrong." You just gotta be able to say "Fuck, my bad, I'm sorry," accept that your behavior didn't reflect your beliefs, and change your behavior so that it better represents who you mean to be.
The less time you spend lingering on whether it feels like people believe you are who you say you are, the more time you can spend getting better at being that person.
Some people will try to tear you down when you make mistakes, they'll try to pigeonhole you as a "bad person," someone whose very existence is defined by doing harm. This isn't your problem, and it's not your responsibility to prove anything to them. They don't have to believe you, and you don't have to appease them. So long as you're willing to accept when you *do* hurt someone, intentional or not, and you're willng to put in the effort to make reparations and change, you'll never "be a bad person."
Let yourself fuck up. All you have to do is course-correct when you notice your actions' impact have strayed from your intentions. The right people will notice that effort, and they'll be proud of you. And perhaps most importantly of all, they'll let you make that effort. Anyone who tells you it's too late to change, to discourage you from improving, or stop you from trying, is not your frend. You don't have to impress them. Ignore them, and let yourself change.
#I didn't manage to say it in the main text so you get it in the PS tag ramble#When you hurt someone by mistake‚ it's okay to feel bad and scared and want to make sure they understand you didn't mean it#But you need to set that aside for the moment. You need to let it be about the other person's hurt.#You can ask other people for support with your feelings‚ they don't make you a “bad person‚” but they're not appropriate to put on the#hurt party. When you accept that you can fix your mistakes and that you're allowed to be upset to‚ it gets less scary to make them#You know there's a protocol for this‚ and so long as you keep it together enough to follow it‚ you can mitigate the harm and fix things.#Don't get defensive. As tumblr says‚ that's the devil talking. Defensive is never the right move when someone says you fucked up/hurt them#You can maintain that it was a mistake‚ but keep that part short and sweet. Let them be hurt‚ let it be you that hurt them. It's hard but#I promise it'll make it better in the long run. People are more likely to forgive you if you let them be angry at you for hurting them.#It's normal to be upset when you hurt someone. It's normal to be upset when someone hurts you. These can and must coexist.#Let them be upset at you‚ apologize sincerely‚ and no more than three to five times. Let it be about them. It can be about you#with others‚ and when they've cooled down and approached you with a willingness to hear your side of things.#Sometimes you'll have to just sit with the feeling of having been wrong or seen as a hurtful person. It sucks‚ but i promise#it sucks so much worse when someone who hurt you is more focused on whether you hate them than if you're okay. Let them be upset#It'll be okay. I love you#mumblr#problemnyatic thoughts

while playing the masquerade event i was hit with the realization that the students from nrc are quite literally the terrible tourists rollo was talking about. and im almost CERTAIN they've been just as bad every other event. like you have ruggie who was about to steal a shops hard earned money, you have epel and deuce that were saying their bread wasn't special before even trying it, you have ruggie AGAIN saying that the historic toys they make are just chunks of wood and don't have any value. these people suck and should not be permitted to travel. all they're doing is making a nuisance of themselves.

#some thoughts incoming idk if i should share but i need to put them somewhere#it's hard being in the yr fandom since the finale when you don't share the same vision and opinion as the rest#and people make future wilmon posts or write post s3 fics (which many exist now) they just don't align with your idea at all#and they're not exciting to me at all and the whole concept just makes me upset#i don't wanna imagine Wille as a 'normal' person (not that that's ever possible anyway which the show loves to ignore)#like I'm sorry but i didn't come to the show to watch an ordinary love story and have them lead an ordinary life#the idea of Wille being a future king and them navigating that royal life together is so much more interesting#i hate that that isn't canon anymore and when ppl make posts about them it's not about that or that would only be seen as a negative thing#i don't wanna imagine a life where they are 'normal' that isn't appealing to me at all and it sucks seeing everyone embrace it#and it's like you're not allowed to want something else or think differently bc that makes you the bad person and you're just wrong#i can't be excited about their future (also bc i don't really see them going strong in the future with how they messed them up in s3)#(i also didn't want to know what could possibly happen in the future i wanted that to stay open and just be in the present)#and seeing everyone else excited and happy about it makes you feel horrible and very alone and disconnected in the fandom#i don't wanna take it away from them but i also would love to see other takes but that's basically impossible now#am i the only person who feels this way or are there any other who can relate? pls let me know#i already feel like ppl are gonna attack me for this but it's been hard especially now with Simon's month and seeing so many interpretation#navigating ao3 has also become difficult now#it's hard finding fics to read where wille stays crown prince and you don't have to be scared for that to change#i just can't read any canon compliant fics anymore and i hate it bc i hate to disagree with canon#i normally don't do that bc canon is important to me and i don't want to reject it and create my own fantasy#and that's what's upsetting#anyway sorry i had to write this#personal

Is it bad that I feel really, really upset seeing that someone has 6 m&g tickets for TIT meanwhile dnp aren't even coming anywhere near my continent, so I can't go to the tour no matter what and I have to save up for or a kidney transplant soon so I can't recklessly spend money on a booking a flight :((
I'm happy for them, and I'm happy dnp are getting the love they deserve, and I feel awful for feeling this way but I really feel bad :((
it's not bad, it's a very natural reaction and you have all the right to feel that way. i think that's the thing a lot of people are missing, your emotions about it are completely valid and understandable, it's just when people then start being really mean to those lucky people who are going to all the m&gs that it gets shitty. no one can expect you to just not be upset that someone is meeting them a bunch of times and you aren't, especially if you can't go to a show at all. it's all about how you navigate it, you know?
allow yourself to feel things, it's good for you

my hot fandom take is that discouraging authentic interaction with fanworks through arbitrary "rules" and increasingly limited and prescriptive scripts of "acceptable" interactions damages fandom as a community perhaps just as much as passive, entitled consumers who demand free labor from fan creators without offering interaction in return
#i just don't know what creators expect when they throw a fit if another fan acts in any way other than the two prescribed emotions they're#'allowed' to have#this is spurred on by fic deletion discourse ftr but it's not limited to it#you're allowed to delete your fics. of course you are. it's your fic#but the fans of your fic are also allowed to be visibly and publicly upset#implying they shouldn't be is saying you don't think people should forge personal connections with your art#which is of course antithetical to art#both actions are allowed AND understandable. you as a creator don't have the right to dictate how people should feel about your work#the only thing that accomplishes is pushing people away. discouraging them from engaging authentically#this also extends to stuff like creating arbitrary etiquette rules around concrit or 'concrit'#yeah it absolutely sucks to get unsolicited crit in your comments. of course it does. you worked hard on that#but saying people should never criticize a fic means that well meaning fans will avoid engaging authentically with any fic at all#because they internalize that speaking about a fic beyond 'i love this!' is somehow rude to an author#and this is NOT a hypothetical. i see this exact behavior all the time. they're too scared of offending to be genuine or contribute to art#art is a discussion. if you refuse to let other people participate in that discussion then you are just as much at fault for the destructio#of the community as passive consumers are. all because you don't want your feelings hurt#unfortunately you DO have to accept that someone may be rude to you or behave inappropriately about your art#in order to get authentic feedback from other not-rude people. there's no getting around it#but people seem to have chosen isolation over community yet again. because we're all scared of criticism and judgment#alas!

procastinating at work but here's my philosophy for today: it's okay to hate a behavior in someone else but also understand that this behavior does not make them a bad person. like i HATE when i'm venting or talking about a serious problem i have and then the person i'm talking to starts trying to relate by talking about a similar experience they've had. like absolutely hate it. make me feel like the focus is being taken off me and it genuinely is in some ways, regardless of your intent. yeah, i understand that's your way of trying to comfort me -- but that's not the way i need or want to be comforted, and that's what matters in a situation where i'm coming to you to be helped.
and that's okay! like. no one is in the wrong here unless i have explicitly asked you to support me in a different way and you're intentionally refusing, or if i lash out at you when i could just disengage. it just means you're not a person i should go to for help when talking about my problems. we can still be friends, you and i can probably support each other in different ways, but we're just incompatible in this regard. and that's like....okay. it's okay to be incompatible with people.

this isn't directed at anyone here on tumblr, but holy MOLY the amount of entitled Taemin fans I am seeing on other websites is insane. like, I'm sorry you couldn't get a vip package, but it's not because his agency is screwing things up, it's because Taemin is extremely popular and a lot of people want to see him.
It's been over a week and there's still people going on about how it's bullshit that they couldn't get tickets--and not in a "i'm disappointed" way, but in an actual "I am very angry about this" kind of way.
Idk what to tell you, but this is how these things go, sometimes. a lot of people wanted those tickets, and there were only so many of them available. you're not entitled to tickets just because you like Taemin, jfc.
