It's so rough watching adult Nat do things that would have come off as strong and righteous if it was her younger self but end up coming off more erratic and even embarrassing from her older self. Young Nat stands up to Lottie and we feel that she is the only sane one, that she's the voice of reason; adult Nat tells the acolytes that Lottie is taking their information and it turns out that they already know and she's making a scene for no reason. Young Nat comes off as one of the most rational and adult members of the group, able to do things the rest od the group cannot (hunting, taking Jackie's remains to the plane, stopping the girls from hurting Travis when they are all on mushrooms) but adult Nat comes off as one of the most unstable and childlike: jobless, prone to outbursts, taking drugs to cope, first refusing to accept that Travis killed himself and then blaming Lottie for it. While other characters might not take adult Shauna and Misty seriously in universe, we as the viewer know what threats they still are, and Tai and Lottie still command power via their natural charisma and leadership skills (and Van, while not evidently a threat in the same way, is still able to assert herself), but while adult Nat has lots of strong and badass moments (breaking into Misty's house, stabbing Lisa and escaping from being kidnapped, stealing the goldfish) she also has ones where she comes across as pitiable (having a meltdown on the phone with the bank, the aforementioned scene with Lottie), her attempts to help the people around her rendered comedic. It's such a strong performance by Juliette Lewis to give Nat such a different energy even as in her heart she's still clearly a deeply moral person struggling to make a difference, just as she's always been.

My newest complaint about the Magnus Chase series: Halfborn Gunderson and Mallory Keen have a relationship built on calling each other names. I don't like that. It feels abusive. It feels like bad friendship. And I know I'm nobody to talk on bad relationships (i snap at my dad all the time), but I still know what I do is wrong. I think Rick Riordan actually wants us to find Halfborn and Mallory's relationship romantic. And…no. Calling someone an idiot repeatedly does not a romance make. These characters are unlikable. And to prove how unlikable this is, i'm going to make a list of the characters i like and the characters i dislike, to show to divided i am on these books.

PS: I was bullied by a girl in grade 4. The amount of times they told me it might have been her having romantic feelings for me…well, it was suggested more than once. And maybe that experience deadened me to romance. Maybe that's why I never feel romantic attraction. At the very least, I see Halfborn and Mallory as loose parables for my old bully and me. Someone yelling at me, pushing me around, calling me names…and yet they were apparently trying to display romance? I refuse to accept that. That's not love. That's hurt. My bully ruined grade 4 for me. I still hate thinking about that period of my life…

Someone at an old job asked why I wanted to write up the meeting minutes for our team and I said 'i wanna control the narrative' and they were like 'what' and I pointed out that no one was gonna remember what we said in six months and so my interpretation of the meeting would dictate the assumed reality of what happened
