Little idle thought I've been having recently but I think Cyparissus' story is very important for characterising Apollo and Apollo's love. It's so easy to think of love and loss as two ends of a spectrum, likewise, so often, death is seen as an ultimate and tragic end in love stories - something final and inescapably tragic, the only force that halts love by separating the lovers.

Cyparissus' story is... not that. Yes, the deer dies and one can conclude then that death is once more at the heart of separating two lovers, but I think Cyparissus specifically requesting to die, specifically begging Apollo to let him grieve forever even after Apollo has done his best to help Cyparissus move on from the accident and Apollo letting him is a powerful thing.

Because Apollo not only puts Cyparissus' wishes over his own, he's also able to see past his own building grief to immortalise Cyparissus in such a way that both grants him his wish and allows other people to glorify Cyparissus as well! And I think such a beautiful thing is something criminally overlooked!

It's become something of a joke that 'all Apollo's lovers turn into plants' but from a functional perspective, flowers are the most brilliant way to keep the spirit of a beloved thing alive. Flowers are like stars - as long as there are humans, humans will always contemplate the nature of flowers and as the god of poetry and song, Apollo creating opportunities for his beloved mortals to be remembered eternally even if they never seized glory in the traditional way is such an intimate and beautiful thing. Even then, Cyparissus is elevated to a similar status as Daphne with Apollo's actions - not merely a plant or flower but one that specifically symbolises him, one that is extremely fragrant and beloved by him. Just as Daphne's laurels were synonymous with glory and victory, Cyparissus' cypress became a emblematic of grief and remembrance. Even today, thousands of years later, people still view cypress trees as mourning trees and plant them in cemeteries and use the ash in incense burnt in remembrance of others. How's that for Apollo keeping his word.

I think the thing that sits least well with me is that the His Dark Materials HBO adaptation doesn't make it clear enough that Lyra is intentionally lying a lot of the time.

Me last night: Okay so I've hit the dreaded Middle slog where I'm not eager and excited for the fic anymore because I've played through all my favorite scenes a million times in my head. Appreciation post for 'girly girl' characters and/or shows that celebrate traditionally feminine things that girls and women are shamed for.

Characters on this list that love makeup, fashion, hair, etc. Characters that are still written as strong, intelligent, brave, etc. That told young girls that these interests are valid, they are not lesser interests. Being feminine and liking traditionally feminine things does not make them weak.

As I've been oversharing, Daphne is terrified of loud noises, and given we've had intense thunderstorms almost every night this past week and my neighborhood believes fireworks start July 1 at 5PM and go for as long as supplies last, it has been a very long week. Thundershirt is useless. Tranquilizers may or may not mildly help, idk, could be a placebo effect.

In a change from previous years, she now also insists we seek shelter in my basement closet. (I don't fit, so it's just her in there, I have to sit on the floor a paw's length away.) If she's feeling brave, we can sit at the top of my basement stairs, which is honestly less comfortable for me but whatever.

Today I read some people have success playing music, and when the first fireworks went off tonight I already had some playing so I just turned up the volume and kept it right next to her and....

SHE DID SO WELL!!!!! Even with the professional works that were SUPER loud and went on forever!! She had some periods of shaking/panting a lot with some wild eyes, but for a lot of it she was even snoring!! Didn't even try to leave the couch. Sometimes got a bit skittish if I moved away from her, but that's it!!!!

Music is magic.

Going to cry I'm so relieved.

(For the record this is still a fireworks hate blog. I'm just thrilled to not be spending the night on a hard floor again.)

I have to talk about what a score this was, I bought this rainbow high lot on eBay a few weeks ago and am just now opening it because I had it delivered to my parents house instead of my apartment by accident, but check out all of this

I spent 130 on this, which may sound like a lot if you don’t collect RH dolls, but if you do, you know that Brianna, pink girl on the left, goes for more than that just by herself (I think she’s the most expensive RH doll, save for a numbered lily Cheng). And I also got a Naomi storm (I have a Veronica out of box, but not a Naomi, so this was perfect!) and a Lila, which, I’ve been wanting to give a Lila a makeover for a long time, but I didn’t want to undo the buns on mine, so I’m happy to have one to play around with. And then there are SO many clothes and accessories which is great for me because I buy a lot of RH secondhand and they’re missing pieces or their second outfits and now I can supplement what I already have. This is legit like, at least worth 300 in my opinion, likely more, and I got such a great deal. I didn’t hesitate either, when I saw it on eBay I immediately bought it.
