WIP Wednesday
Jonathan is almost asleep. There's a nice warm breeze coming in from the window, the record stopped playing ages ago and he's finally lost the tension of the day.
But, he's waiting for the inevitable. It's funny, the routine they've fallen into. Any minute now she's going to not so gently poke him and check if he's still awake. Then she'll dump every last thought in her head. And once she finishes with tonight's diatribe, she’ll somehow inch even closer to him before she drifts off to sleep first.
He's sure that anyone else would be annoyed or irritated with the lack of sleep. But it's never really bothered him. He likes to think that, barring the end of the world, this is when they know each other best. In the quiet, dark of his room where the whole world is just the two of them.
As if she can read his mind, he feels her not so gentle squeeze on his forearm.
“Baby?” Nancy whispers softly
That's another thing about their ritual. She never uses his name. Though, normally she calls him ‘Honey’. So whatever she wants to talk about tonight must be heavy if she's pulling out the big guns right from the start.
“Hmmm”
“Are you awake?” she asks, despite knowing the answer.
“Mhmm”
“Can I ask you something?”
“Anything you know that” he swears.
Nancy takes her time and the silence creeps back into the room. She starts running her thumb along his arm and now he’s actually starting to worry. Normally, she’s not this hesitant. She speaks her mind, it’s what he loves about her. Maybe it’s a work thing, he wouldn’t be surprised if those assholes have finally gotten to her. He mentally prepares to spend the next half hour denouncing them, promising that he loves her just the way she is and vowing that she’s going to be a star reporter and they’ll be stuck here in dead-end Hawkins.
“Is the Jo thing intentional?” she asks, finally.
“The what?” he questions back, even more confused.
“Your mom is Joyce.” she answers.
“You don't say.” He sasses and she nudges his leg.
“And you're Jonathan” she continues.
“Last I checked” he snarks, still trying to add levity to whatever this conversation is.
“You’ve both got Jo names” Nancy informs as if he wasn’t aware.
“Mhmm” he acknowledges.
“So it is intentional” she determines before he can say otherwise.
“I dunno. I mean, maybe? My grandpa was named Joseph but he died before I was born so…” he explains in a rush.
“Right… Sorry”
The silence fills the room again as he waits for her next question. Because Nancy always has another question. Sometimes he thinks she uses their relationship as interview training. Not that he really minds.
“Well, would you want your kids to have Jo names?”
“Yea at least for the first one” he admits before he can stop himself.
Jonathan recoils, suddenly feeling prickly, he wonders if he can make a break for it. Say he needs to go to the bathroom. Like she’d buy that. That's the problem with letting her this far in. When he tries to hide, she knows exactly where to find him. Nancy turns over onto her side, wraps one arm around his middle and starts gently kissing the underside of his jaw. This is the other problem. In the few months they’ve been together she’s figured out exactly how to coax him out of his shell. Any tension he had surrounding ideas of the future is slowly melting away with each kiss.
“Any ideas?” she mummers against his skin.
“Huh”
“For names?” she asks with that cute huff of a laugh that drives him crazy.
Leave it to Nancy to discuss baby names at 12:33 in the morning.

So, I really love the selection of Tim Walz for VP and it’s taken me a moment to articulate why. I mean, obviously, Dem bonafides, he’s sharp, he’s funny, etc etc. But everyone in the Veepstakes fits that bill, Harris was spoiled for good choices.
But Walz offers something that the other men in contention don’t that I think will be incredibly useful in combating Trumpism.
He offers an example and an off ramp to the section of men who felt like they were Republicans by default, and so support Trump by default. There are a lot of Trump voters who are full on obsessive, but that’s not who we’re talking to. We’re talking to folks who grew up in Republican areas, or felt their hobbies didn’t line up with who a Democrat was, or didn’t feel represented by their image of a Democrat. You want to see it so you can be it, you know? Which is why Harris is so inspirational to a lot of segments of folks, but Walz is too.
He served in the military. He went to a state college. He’s your favorite teacher from your public high school. He’s your football coach who actually cared if you were passing your math class. He’s the guy you looked up to at school when your family sucked but this guy cared, and he helped you get out and make something of yourself.
He’s the neighbor who helps you jump your car. He’s your uncle who takes you hunting. He’s your Dad who loves teasing you at the Stare Fair. He’s you when he makes a mistake like his DUI and takes responsibility for it, and when he has the chance makes sure other can come back from similar mistakes. He’s you when you and your wife want so badly to be parents and IVF gives you the family you wanted. He’s you when he says ‘it had to be me’ and used his standing and power to protect vulnerable kids sponsoring the GSA at his school.
He gives the real life example to these men that they can be that football, fishing, hunting family man who wants to provide for his family, be that powerful, respected member of the community and use that power to feed kids in school. That it’s normal to enthusiastically work for a boss like Harris. That yeah those other guys are fucking weirdos, and you’re not a weirdo, are you?
That there’s a place in the Democratic Party for them. That they don’t have to default to being fucking weird.
I hope those guys see this example of masculinity and go… yeah, that’s me. That’s who I’m gonna be.
