I wonder if Frieren is a more moving watch for parents (parents who have watched it, please weigh in!)

I realized that parents are very much in a position where the lives of some of the people closest to them are passing by so so so quickly. A couple months, even a year may feel like nothing to an adult, but to a kid that's everything. You can't afford to take your time around kids, you have to be present with them every day. The pace of their life demands you keep up even though it's tiring.

I think Frieren is kind of like a child - after all, it feels like one of the theses of the story is that being aware of time and cherishing your relationships in the little time you have with them is a necessary component to maturity - but Frieren is also, literally and vibes-wise, an old lady doing her best to keep up with these actual children she's taken under her wing, and trying to be there for them in the short time she has with them.

I have some thoughts about the Dead Poets Society blindfold deleted scene. I mean, there's the way Neil is so clearly enraptured by the music, obviously enjoying this escape, treasuring this serenity.

But then also the way he stays behind, as all of his classmates leave.

Everyone gets up to keep going and Neil sits behind, he stays with his blindfold on, he stays in the darkness, refusing to leave that escapism.

Then later, he takes his own life, because he sees it as the only way to escape the life his father laid out for him. And everyone has to move on without him.

I always found the scene where Edwin notices that Esther's cupboard is too far forward really convenient.

Because sure, some people that work in certain jobs will learn to identify if something feels off. But like, how often is Edwin installing kitchens? Why would he have that skill? But I always just brushed it off as needing to progress the scene.

Except today I realised that of course he does! Of course he knows when something isn’t proportionate to plans. Of course he has the experience and skill to know that.

He developed it while mapping out Hell.

he'll ignore wounds on purpose and that would get most people infected, but he heals faster than the baseline human and is immune to disease so no one bats an eye when he skips medical again

he drinks enough high proof liquor to give the baseline human alcohol poisoning ten times over but no one thinks he has a drinking problem because they think he can't get drunk, but it's not that he can't get drunk, his body just processes alcohol more efficiently

he's in the gym too much but everyone brushes it off because of course cap is a gym rat, he's an avenger so of course he has to train, he has to keep up with the job somehow, no he's not over-exerting himself, he'll be fine, he's a supersoldier.
