PREFACE TO A COURSE IN MIRACLES

This Preface was written in 1977, in response to many requests for a brief introduction to A Course in Miracles. The first two parts—How It Came; What It Is—Helen Schucman wrote herself; the final part—What It Says—was written by the process of inner dictation described in the Preface.

HOW IT CAME

A Course in Miracles began with the sudden decision of two people to join in a common goal. Their names were Helen Schucman and William Thetford, Professors of Medical Psychology at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. They were anything but spiritual. Their relationship with each other was difficult and often strained, and they were concerned with personal and professional acceptance and status. In general, they had considerable investment in the values of the world. Their lives were hardly in accord with anything that the Course advocates. Helen, the one who received the material, describes herself:

Psychologist, educator, conservative in theory and atheistic in belief, I was working in a prestigious and highly academic setting. And then something happened that triggered a chain of events I could never have predicted. The head of my department unexpectedly announced that he was tired of the angry and aggressive feelings our attitudes reflected, and concluded that, "there must be another way." As if on cue I agreed to help him find it. Apparently this Course is the other way.

Although their intention was serious, they had great difficulty in starting out on their joint venture. But they had given the Holy Spirit the "little willingness" that, as the Course itself was to emphasize again and again, is sufficient to enable Him to use any situation for His purposes and provide it with His power.

To continue Helen's first-person account:

Three startling months preceded the actual writing, during which time Bill suggested that I write down the highly symbolic dreams and descriptions of the strange images that were coming to me. Although I had grown more accustomed to the unexpected by that time, I was still very surprised when I wrote, "This is a course in miracles." That was my introduction to the Voice. It made no sound, but seemed to be giving me a kind of rapid, inner dictation which I took down in a shorthand notebook. The writing was never automatic. It could be interrupted at any time and later picked up again. It made me very uncomfortable, but it never seriously occurred to me to stop. It seemed to be a special assignment I had somehow, somewhere agreed to complete. It represented a truly collaborative venture between Bill and myself, and much of its significance, I am sure, lies in that. I would take down what the Voice "said" and read it to him the next day, and he typed it from my dictation. I expect he had his special assignment, too. Without his encouragement and support I would never have been able to fulfill mine. The whole process took about seven years. The Text came first, then the Workbook for Students, and finally the Manual for Teachers. Only a few minor changes have been made. Chapter titles and subheadings have been inserted in the Text, and some of the more personal references that occurred at the beginning have been omitted. Otherwise the material is substantially unchanged.

The names of the collaborators in the recording of the Course do not appear on the cover because the Course can and should stand on its own. It is not intended to become the basis for another cult. Its only purpose is to provide a way in which some people will be able to find their own Internal Teacher.

WHAT IT IS

As its title implies, the Course is arranged throughout as a teaching device. It consists of three books: a 669-page Text, a 488-page Workbook for Students, and an 92-page Manual for Teachers. The order in which students choose to use the books, and the ways in which they study them, depend on their particular needs and preferences.

The curriculum the Course proposes is carefully conceived and is explained, step by step, at both the theoretical and practical levels. It emphasizes application rather than theory, and experience rather than theology. It specifically states that "a universal theology is impossible, but a universal experience is not only possible but necessary." (C-in.2:5) Although Christian in statement, the Course deals with universal spiritual themes. It emphasizes that it is but one version of the universal curriculum. There are many others, this one differing from them only in form. They all lead to God in the end.

The Text is largely theoretical, and sets forth the concepts on which the Course's thought system is based. Its ideas contain the foundation for the Workbook's lessons. Without the practical application the Workbook provides, the Text would remain largely a series of abstractions which would hardly suffice to bring about the thought reversal at which the Course aims.

The Workbook includes 365 lessons, one for each day of the year. It  is not necessary, however, to do the lessons at that tempo, and one might want to remain with a particularly appealing lesson for more than one day. The instructions urge only that not more than one lesson a day should be attempted. The practical nature of the Workbook is underscored by the introduction to its lessons, which emphasizes experience through application rather than a prior commitment to a spiritual goal:

Some of the ideas the workbook presents you will find hard to believe, and others may seem to be quite startling. This does not matter. You are merely asked to apply the ideas as you are directed to do. You are not asked to judge them at all. You are asked only to use them. It is their use that will give them meaning to you, and will show you that they are true.

Remember only this; you need not believe the ideas, you need not accept them, and you need not even welcome them. Some of them you may actively resist. None of this will matter, or decrease their efficacy. But do not allow yourself to make exceptions in applying the ideas the workbook contains, and whatever your reactions to the ideas may be, use them. Nothing more than that is required (W-in.9).

Finally, the Manual for Teachers, which is written in question and answer form, provides answers to some of the more likely questions a student might ask. It also includes a clarification of a number of the terms the Course uses, explaining them within the theoretical framework of the Text. The Course makes no claim to finality, nor are the Workbook lessons intended to bring the student's learning to completion. At the end, the reader is left in the hands of his or her own Internal Teacher, Who will direct all subsequent learning as He sees fit. While the Course is comprehensive in scope, truth cannot be limited to any finite form, as is clearly recognized in the statement at the end of the Workbook:

This Course is a beginning, not an end...No more specific lessons are assigned, for there is no more need of them. Henceforth, hear but the Voice for God...He will direct your efforts, telling you exactly what to do, how to direct your mind, and when to come to Him in silence, asking for His sure direction and His certain Word (W-ep.).

The benefits I’ve experienced studying A Course In Miracles

For the first time in my life, and I feel a little pompous saying this, but for the first time in my life I feel like I know the answers to the 2 greatest mysteries of all time. I am referring of a course in miracles to the questions “Who am I?” and “Why am I here?”

For most, if not all, of my life I have experienced some form of confusion, anxiety and depression. When I was about 22 years old I tried killing myself. I felt isolated, separate and desperate to be approved of by others and society in general. I was uncomfortable in my own skin and I would lightly self medicate with food, alcohol, drugs and pornography. Not so much that it seemed like I had a problem, but enough to take the edge off of resisting life.

On the outside I looked good, though, and I used this as a way to feel better about myself as well. I knew I was relatively good looking, charming, had a way with words and came across as a very nice and kind young man. I usually had plenty of money, and if I didn’t I was good at getting it.

When I communicated with people, I would say things with specific words and in such a way to get them to like me, as opposed to sincere authentic communication. When trying new projects, whether career oriented or hobby, I always quit when the discomfort got to a certain point. When I was completely honest , I could see that I despised myself.

It wasn’t all negative, I’ve had amazing experiences and been blessed with deep friendships and people that genuinely care for me. And for as long as I can remember, despite the anxiety and depression, I’ve sensed a light within. I could sense my own divinity but it felt so faint and distant. It was there constantly, though, which was part of the problem. Deep inside I could feel this purpose, this recognition of my real self, this connection to God and power and Love. But sensing that light within while feeling depressed and anxious and failing or quitting at everything I tried had my self esteem at an all time low and I was ready to give up on life.

This giving up wasn’t another suicide attempt, it would be to quit striving looking for that light. It would be to find an attractive woman for a wife, get a safe cushy corporate job, buy a house and learn about retirement saving and mortgage rates and take yearly vacations and buy too much shit I didn’t need.

Then, I found A Course In Miracles (now referred to as ACIM or The Course) and everything changed. I first got the download of what The Course was saying by reading the book called Disappearance of the Universe (DOTU) by Gary Renard. I was also blessed to be surrounded by a community of people that were also studying The Course and received some great tips and advice which I’ll briefly mention in a bit. The first piece of advice, though, was to read that book.

From reading DOTA, I learned (or was reminded of) that this reality, including Earth and the entire universe, was not created by God. Now, I was raised Christian-Lite, meaning our parents took us to church and Sunday School, but I could see that they took us out of duty more than reverence and faith. They were simply fulfilling their parental obligations of letting organized religion teach their kids about right & wrong. Reading that God did not create this reality lined up with the very reasons why I ultimately turned my back on organized religion. There were too many unanswered questions and contradictions. To me, The Course is free of unanswered questions and contradictions. I was reminded that WE (you and me and everyone else, together as One) have made this dream world to hide from God because we believe, incorrectly, that we have somehow separated from God.

I get that this may sound outlandish, but the purpose of this writing is not to sell anyone on The Course, nor is it to go into detail explaining what the course is, I just felt inspired to share how ACIM has guided me in healing the blocks, or wounds, in my mind. Once I got that I am the one projecting my reality, and that ALL of my guilt (and all negative versions of this guilt — shame, fear, hate, all of it) stemmed from believing I had separated from God, from my source. I got deeper in my studies of The Course and I could see that this was like a mental map, a map into the subconscious complete with the promise that all my pain could be handed over to Spirit.

It has been a bumpy ride for sure, but I can now feel into my mind and get a sense of the darkness, or wounds or blocks, that remain. I now get excited every single time I find myself judging me or someone else as this as an opportunity to heal.

I am reminded that we are all pure Spirit, safe at home in the arms of God, but dreaming this dream which we are convinced is real.

I am reminded that at any one point in time there is only one choice possible and that is the choice between Love and fear.

I am reminded that in my mind, at least in this dream reality, there are only two guides. The Holy Spirit (intuition) is the guide for Love and the ego (our identity as a body) as the guide for fear. In each moment we have the ability to choose our teacher. Only Love is real, but since we believe in the ego, we make it appear real.

Herein lies the peace of God.

I am reminded that focusing out into this world, trying to make this world more comfortable, or somehow better, is misplacing my power. Focusing out into this world by trying for a better body, better partner, more money, recognition or accolades, makes this reality appear all the more real.

I am reminded to turn my attention inward and sincerely seek all the darkness, all the parts in there that aren’t really me, that aren’t even real (though again, my belief in them make them appear real) so I can then forgive it, or give it away to Spirit, whose job it is to take it from me.

I am reminded that EVERY SINGLE block, problem, wound, fear or concern in my mind was ultimately placed there by me. There is nothing outside of myself that is to blame for any problem in my life. The Course has shown me my 100% responsibility for my attitude and state of mind.

I am reminded that this whole ACIM thing seems radical and extreme only when compared to the smallness and victim mentality we have accepted as truth here in this reality.

I am reminded that I get to meet myself where I am currently at. THIS is an act of gentleness and compassion which greatly serves in the healing process, in the unwinding of the ego. I am reminded that I will continue in the illusion for as long as I have an ego, as long as I have darkness in my mind. I get to enjoy this ride and I get to remember what I really am.

I am reminded to put Love and my own healing above money, above what people think of me, above my personal relationships, above my own pleasure, opinions and preferences and I am reminded that as I do this, as I re-train my mind to put my own awakening above all else, that all lack in all forms melts away with my small self’s preferences.

I am reminded that true abundance is the remembrance and recognition that I already am everything. I get to follow my heart, choose Love over fear over and over and over and watch as the symbols of abundance appear, as if by magic, from out of seemingly nowhere and I can smile and laugh with the understanding that they were always there. As I clean away the muck, as I bring the darkness to light, THEN I can see, where before I was blind.

The main benefit I’ve experienced from studying A Course In Miracles is that I am now certain that Peace of Mind is my ONLY focus. And it is ridiculously simple.

But simple.

Love has everything already mapped out for us. Once we’re ready to jump off the cliff, into the unknown, without a parachute, we will embark on the ride of a lifetime and we will, just after jumping, see the leagues of angels that have been with us always, whispering, with kindness and gentleness, “Jump. You are safe. I’ve got you.”

¿Qué es Un Curso de Milagros?

La Iglesia no apoya la práctica de Un Curso de Milagros (UCDM) en primer lugar porque considera diferente el concepto de “milagro” y no cree que pueda enseñarse, y en segundo lugar porque la fe cristiana no comparte el pensamiento nuevaerista.

1. ¿Qué es UCDM?

UCDM es un libro escrito por Helen Cohn Schucman entre los años 1965 y 1972. Su autora afirmó escribirlo después de escuchar una voz que le dijo: “He aquí un curso sobre los milagros. Por favor, escriba”.

El libro ya era conocido antes del fallecimiento de su autora en 1981. No obstante, no se supo de su autoría hasta después de la fecha, época en que su amigo y editor Kenneth Wapnick crearía la Fundación para Un Curso de Milagros, organismo que conservaría los derechos de autor sobre el libro.

Desde su propio sitio web, informan que UCDM es “un único, universal, sistema de auto-estudio y pensamiento espiritual, que enseña que el camino hacia el amor y la paz interior es a través del perdón” (1).

2. ¿Quién inventó UCDM?

El libro, como ya se expuso, fue escrito por Helen Cohn Schucman y la organización, desarrollada por su amigo Kenneth Wapnick, después de la muerte de Helen. Helen Cohn Schucman nació en 1909 en Nueva York, contrajo nupcias con Louis Schucman en 1933 y estudió psicología en la Universidad de Nueva York, en la cual recibió su licenciatura en 1957.

En 1958 comenzó su carrera de docente en la Universidad de Columbia, donde conoció a su colega William Thetford, quien ante los comentarios de Helen respecto a una “voz” que le indicaba escribir, le sugirió: ¿Por qué no tomar notas? De esa manera escribió el libro entre los años 1965 y 1972.

Helen Cohn Schucman falleció en 1981 a los 71 años de edad, después de atravesar una larga enfermedad.

3. ¿Que dice UCDM?

“Según Un Curso de Milagros, Dios es una “Mente” (Mind) o, si se prefiere, un espíritu impersonal, que sólo ha “creado” al Hijo, no al mundo. Éste habría aparecido por emanación. Jesucristo no es el único Hijo de Dios, sino el primero consciente de ello. El Hijo se habría dormido y soñado ser creador como Dios mismo. Por lo mismo se reconoce distinto de Dios, aunque su yo aspira a ser Dios. Para despertarlo, Dios hizo salir de sí mismo al Espíritu Santo, que queda reducido a “la Voz de Dios dentro de cada uno” de nosotros. Una vez despierto, el Hijo cae en la cuenta de su culpa, a saber, su separación de Dios.

Millares de egos (los hombres) nacieron de esta creencia o sueño, los cuales se identifican con su cuerpo físico y se creen equivocadamente separados de Dios a pesar de ser fragmentos del Hijo de Dios. La existencia del ego o del yo depende de su falsa creencia en su separación de Dios (panteísmo). El pecado y la culpa consisten en esta separación, pero no son reales, pues existen solo en sueños. Jesús no murió por nuestros pecados, pues estos no existen. Tampoco existen las enfermedades, la muerte, etc., a no ser en cuanto soñados” (2).

4. ¿Cómo se practica UCDM?

“Como el propio título indica, el Curso está organizado de principio a fin como un recurso de enseñanza. Se compone de tres libros: el Texto, que tiene 754 páginas, el Libro de ejercicios, con 522, y el Manual para el maestro, que consta de 100. El orden que el estudiante debe seguir al usar los libros y la manera de estudiarlos depende, en cada caso, de sus necesidades y preferencias personales.

El Curso pone más énfasis en la aplicación práctica que en la teoría, y más en la experiencia que en la teología. Señala específicamente que “una teología universal es imposible, mientras que una experiencia universal no sólo es posible sino necesaria” (Manual, pág. 83). Aunque su enfoque es cristiano, el Curso aborda temas espirituales de carácter universal. Subraya que no es más que una de las muchas versiones del programa de estudios universal, y que difiere de las demás sólo en su forma. En última instancia, todas conducen a Dios.

El Texto es fundamentalmente teórico y expone los conceptos en los que se basa el sistema de pensamiento del Curso. Sus ideas contienen los cimientos de las lecciones del Libro de ejercicios. Sin la aplicación práctica que el Libro de ejercicios provee, el Texto quedaría reducido, en su mayor parte, a una serie de abstracciones que no tendrían la fuerza necesaria para producir el cambio de mentalidad que es la meta del Curso.

El Libro de ejercicios consta de 365 lecciones, una para cada día del año. No es necesario, sin embargo, hacer las lecciones siguiendo ese ritmo; se puede, si se desea, dedicar más de un día a una lección determinada. Las instrucciones sólo recomiendan que no se intente hacer más de una lección por día” (3).

5. UCDM y sus influencias

Helen Cohn Schucman estuvo de una manera u otra vinculada al judaísmo (culturalmente) y al presbiterianismo, aunque era atea (4). “Antes de 1965 Helen había tenido “sueños” extraños, visto “luces” y oído “voces”. Por eso, para aclarar su naturaleza, ella y su esposo habían visitado la Asociación para la investigación y la iluminación en Virginia Beach, dirigida allí por el hijo de Edgar Cayce, que tanto ha influido en la literatura del canalismo” (5).

Su colega William Thetford, ya anteriormente interesado en el esoterismo, estuvo también relacionado desde su adolescencia con la Ciencia Cristiana (6).

6. ¿Por qué la Iglesia no apoya la práctica de UCDM?

En primer lugar, porque tiene otro concepto de lo que es un “milagro”. En segundo lugar, porque es panteísta, es decir, “la creencia de que todo es Dios o, en ocasiones, que todo está en dios y dios está en todo (panenteísmo). Todo elemento del universo es divino, y la divinidad está presente por igual en todo. En esta visión no tiene cabida Dios como un ser distinto en el sentido del teísmo clásico” (7).

Además tiene influencias de gnosticismo (“Éste habría aparecido por emanación”) y de canalismo (Channeling o canalización), que es cuando “los médiums psíquicos sostienen que actúan como canales de información de otros yoes, normalmente entidades incorpóreas que viven en otro plano. Pone en relación a seres tan diversos como maestros excelsos, ángeles, dioses, entidades colectivas, espíritus de la naturaleza y el Yo Superior” (8).

Y, además, de Pensamiento Nuevo, que es un “movimiento religioso del siglo XIX fundado en los Estados Unidos de América. Tuvo su origen en el idealismo, del cual era una forma popularizada. Se decía que Dios era completamente bueno y el mal una mera ilusión; la realidad básica era la mente. Puesto que es la mente la que causa los acontecimientos de la propia vida, el individuo debe asumir la responsabilidad última sobre cada uno de los aspectos de su situación” (9). Esta idea habría llegado a UCDM por la Ciencia Cristiana, movimiento relacionado con el Pensamiento Nuevo.

Viene uno de dar largas caminatas por esos campos; de escuchar el silencio, de respirar, de no pensar en nada, de encontrar paz. No sé si es la verdadera paz, pero sí han sido momentos de paz.

Cada uno de nosotros, cada persona, libra su particular batalla interior consigo mismo y por ello cada uno tiene de esos espacios, de esos rincones donde puede encontrarse y recuperar algo de aliento.

No intentes cambiar a los demás, cámbiate tú.

He estado leyendo, estudiando, como casi todos los días pero algo más en calma, ese libro que me acompaña desde hace tiempo: Un Curso de Milagros (UCDM). Un libro raro para muchos y no tanto para otros muchos. Un libro que no es fácil para el que está acostumbrado a leer y estudiar textos de espiritualidad y crecimiento personal, imagínate, pues, para aquellos que ni siquiera están acostumbrados a leer. Curiosamente suelen ser estos últimos, los que no leen, los que critican, enjuician o tachan de raros a los que lo leen. Uno de mis principios es no enjuiciar a nadie, me costó aprender, con lo que parto de la base del respeto a unos y a otros.

Un Curso de Milagros es uno de esos libros que me acompañará siempre, junto a un puñado más, y que suelo recomendar, incluso regalar, a esas personas que significan y son importantes en mi vida.

Un Curso de Milagros es un entrenamiento mental para limpiar la mente de todo aquello que te impide ver la realidad tal y como verdaderamente es. Es un cambio de percepción.

UCDM llega cuando tiene que llegar. Yo lo tenía en la biblioteca, arropado por muchos otros y pendiente de leer. Desconfiaba de su título, de su gran tamaño; desconfiaba también por algunas reseñas o críticas que había leído sobre el uso de un vocabulario algo religioso, cristiano. Por otro lado percibía una seria atracción hacia él. Lo cogía, lo hojeaba, lo volvía a dejar en su sitio y así en varias ocasiones.

Mi vida sufrió uno de esos momentos en los que sientes que todo se viene abajo y un día, en mi soledad, me abracé por completo a él. Ya no lo he soltado desde entonces. Me acompaña.

«Estoy decidido a ver las cosas de otra manera» UCDM

Este libro no es un libro para leer porque sí, porque alguien te lo recomienda. UCDM se lee cuando él mismo cree que tiene que ser leído. 

Cuando te adentras en él, no sin dificultad, nada es lo mismo. Todo cambia porque justo en ese momento es cuando tu estás abierto y preparado a cambiar. El libro, sus textos, simplemente te lo hacen más fácil, te guían.

Un Curso de Milagros confía en tu propia experiencia, en tu compromiso y reflexión para razonar y verificar las ideas expuestas. Al principio puede producir resistencia y rechazo en algunas de sus ideas. Sigue adelante.

Te ayuda a detener todos esos pensamientos tóxicos de tu mente, sanar aquello que ha quedado dañado y recuperar el control. 

¿Podríamos hablar de milagro?

Un milagro es que te hagas responsable de tu vida, que asumas el poder que tienes y todos tenemos y seas capaz de llevar el control de tu mente y gestionar tus emociones.

Un milagro es reconocer tus errores y enmendarlos.

Un milagro es que decidas por ti y no por lo que los demás quieran de ti.

Un milagro es ser capaces de desplazar ese ego que nos invade y domina.

Un milagro es aceptar que el pasado no puede tocarte porque ya no está y el momento presente es lo único que importa.

Es un libro que te hace cuestionarte. que te permite adentrarte en ti y revisarte, desintoxicarte de todo aquello que te impone lo exterior y que, realmente, no te ha aportado nada en la vida.

Es un libro de desarrollo personal.

Cada uno de nosotros creamos nuestra realidad, nadie más. Tu eres el responsable de tu vida por lo tanto tu eres el responsable de cambiar esa realidad que te disgusta, que te hace sufrir.

Si te dejas, el ego cogerá las riendas de tu vida; pero si lo deseas, con compromiso y esfuerzo, serás tu quién dirija lo más importante de ti: tu vida.

Tu felicidad ni está ni depende de lo que hay ahí afuera, tu felicidad depende de ti.

UCDM me aporta tranquilidad y paz en el día a día pero, sobre todo, en esos momentos difíciles de los que pensaba nunca saldría. 

Nuestro sufrimiento, nuestro malestar, es fruto única y exclusivamente de nuestros pensamientos.

Por eso, ante una misma circunstancia, unos actúanos de una manera y otros de otra. Unos se bloquean y hunden y otros se crecen.

Hace algún tiempo escribí algo sobre la historia de este libro (AQUÍ). Llevaba por título Hablando de Un Curso de Milagros. He seguido y sigo estudiando su texto, reflexionando sus lecciones y creo que es algo que me llevará toda la vida. Ahora, tiempo después, trataré de ir explicando su mensaje que, como yo, unos lo recogerán y otros lo ignorarán, unos lo criticarán y otros lo aceptarán.

“When is the best time to Vietnam motorbike” is a popular question however it’s not easy to give the correct answer because Vietnam is a long country and most of the area of Vietnam is mountainous so the climate is changeable and different in each parts in the same time. In some places, you can have 4 seasons in just one day. During the rainy season but you may have a whole week without any rain in the day. It may be sunny in one side of the mountain but the other side could be cloudy/foggy or rain.

Based on geographic and climatic conditions, there are 7 different climatic regions in Vietnam: Northwest, Northeast, North Delta (Red revier delta), North Central (North Central Coast), South Central (South Central Coast), Central Highlands, and the South. These seven regions are widely accepted within the Vietnamese climatological community. South Vietnam: With almost sunny and hot days year-round, usually rains in the afternoon from May – November but normally quick rain or rain in the late afternoon.

Our answer: We organize motorbike tours in Vietnam in whole year-round and we can say each time of year has pros and cons. As we say, It may rain usually from June – August but it’s just like a quick shower then stop to be sunny again and the pros of this time is that you can see the most beautiful color in the mountain with full of rice terraces and blue sky everyday with rainbow sometimes.

WHAT WAS YOUR INITIAL REACTION TO THE COUNTRY?

In one word, terrifying. To me it was a different planet! Flying into Ho Chi Minh City I quickly saw swarms of mopeds, and heard stories of people being robbed or worse.

Needless to say, this kind of put me off to a rocky start on Vietnam motorbike trip.

I think I stayed in my hotel room for at least 24 hours contemplating if we had made the right decision. We even were searching for flights out until I decided that I wasn’t going to let “stories” dictate my trip.

Making the choice to get over my shock and continue with plans to travel from Saigon to Hanoi by motorbike was hard, but one of the best I’ve made.

WHAT WAS THE PROCESS OF BUYING A MOTORBIKE IN VIETNAM?

Buying a motorbike in Vietnam as a foreigner is illegal, and for good reason. You can apply for a Vietnamese license in advance, but the paperwork is challenging to say the least.

Not to mention the fact you have to leave enough time to actually get approved and receive it. Really though, this is Asia after all so we figured out the easiest solution… Risk it!

When we started our search into buying a motorbike in Vietnam people saw us coming from miles away. All they saw is money, money, money.

Selling was the same because it seemed like all people wanted to do was screw you over as much as they possibly could. They definitely carry the view that all foreigners have to be rich.

Most people buying a motorbike in Vietnam do so with a Vietnamese person they meet and can trust. Either that, or from someone fresh off their own Vietnam motorbike trip with the most beat up piece of crap you can ever imagine.

Everyone claims they have the best piece of machinery you will be able to find. They also have a “blue card” with some random Vietnamese persons name on it. This apparently is the only way you can actually try and prove you own it.
