some etiquette tips for quotev migrants

If you enjoy a post (piece of art, text post, writing, gifset, etc) interact however you would have on quotev!

Reblogging is like reposting an activity, but with a permanent link to op, and you can add your own thoughts in the tags or on the post itself. Very nifty. It's that little 🔄 symbol at the bottom.

Likes are a good short-form validation, and also a way to save posts so you can find them again later.

Comments are good for sharing your thoughts without having the post on your account for whatever reason.

Tags are optional, but useful for both organization and extra commentary that will stay on your blog (unless someone likes your tags. Then they may copy/screenshot and add to the post, or copy them in their own tags.)

if you trigger tag something, don't censor the trigger. That will only make it harder for people who have that tag blocked to avoid it.

"Copying is ok" rules for tags don't apply to art; art is to be reblogged, not copy-pasted, unless given permission from the artist. It's also polite to credit an artist if you use their art for a header/pfp, and/or ask beforehand!

That said, gifs are free game pretty much, since they have built-in credit to whoever uploaded them.

When posting images it's helpful to use the alt text feature to add a description, or add one in the body of the post below or above the picture, since A; it's helpful for those who use screen readers, and B; sometimes pictures don't load and the description is sometimes vital to tell what the heck's going on, screenreader or no.

Ask boxes are for things you don't mind being publicly viewed; messages are for private discussions.

Anonymous asks are optional, meaning some people may have them turned off. Anon hate is unfortunately common and many people opt to avoid it.

Block and report bots on sight. Report for spam/bot violations; even if they're an nsfw bot, reporting for sexual content won't do anything to get rid of them. Bots are pretty recognizable when you know what to look for, as their blog will either be blank/have a insta model pfp and generic URL, or...be full of untagged porn.

Bots come in waves; there'll be a lot at once, then they'll die off to a handful, then eventually come back. It's a neverending battle!

You can block tags to avoid seeing content you don't like. To do this you go into "account" in the settings menu, and type whatever you wanna block in the content filters section.

Turn on timestamps! That way you can know if info is outdated, or just in general have a time frame for when something was made.

Block rather than argue. You'll be happier in the long run. Hell, even if someone just kinda gets on your nerves or yucks your yum, but especially if it's serious, since reporting does next to nothing and arguing just won't change someone who's stuck in their ways, and it's not your job to fix everyone who's wrong. Block their account and if you want, block their name on the filtered content. Chances are they won't even know or care so don't worry that it's rude.

a guide to spotting (and avoiding) stolen gifsets ✨

people who steal gifs (aka just download them from a rando blog and upload them on their own blog, without any indication that this isn't their own original work) will usually steal gifs of random sizes and colorings, which is why the gifsets usually don't look matchy.

example: someone does a "victoria appreciation post" or smth and it looks like this:

can you see how the coloring is totally different? > these are two different gifsets

if you post them vertically instead of horizontally, you even see that the gifs are different sizes/dimensions

this means this is a repost. don't reblog it, don't interact with it.

people who gif will make sure that their gifs match in size and color, we spend literal hours on making this happen. if gifs don't match in size or color (not strategically anyway) then don't interact with that post.

you wanna be cute and fun and include other people's gif's in your posts responsibly? then use the "gif search" button on tumblr, it's this little yellow guy

then, if you add some's gif to your post, the OG will a) be credited and b) notified of you using their gif

do you see that "GIF by linggluu" line? this is what you want.

"but the gif search is too tedious/I can't find the specific gif/etc" then credit the original gifmaker. post the gif via the "upload image" function and add a caption or link to the original gifset.

If you use more than one gif, talk to the OG creator about whether you can use their gifs for your post. If they say no then don't use their gifs.

If you have a super old gif and don't know the creator, then use reverse google image search.

If you cannot find the gif via reverse google image search, then don't use the gif.

If you really want to use a gif and can't find it - request it. the worst type of rejection you'll hear will be "sorry i don't have time for requests atm". Most gif makes will be very happy to have gif inspo and will happily make you your gifs. Please be polite to gif makers, artists, fanfic writers, etc.

just saw someone reply to a post about giffing, saying that they don't want people to save their gifs to any of their devices period.

and i'm just a little mm about all of this.

the main post was about reposting gifs and giving credit and like... i made my stance clear about this before, but here it is again: giving credit would be the nice and polite thing to do if you're gonna repost something someone else has worked on for hours and you liked it so much that you wanted to use it/put it onto your page.

BUT. i personally only post my gifs to tumblr so i don't really care what numbers they do on other platforms and people can claim they made it all they want but those lies always end up exposed so whatevs. reposting it onto the same platform however, instead of reblogging it or linking to it, gets you blocked quicker than you could blink.

but if you just wanna stare at them on your phone or use them as reaction images on twitter? i don't see how that'd hurt anyone.

i guess my point is that yeah it'd be ideal if people were nice about this, but that's just not gonna happen, so if you don't want your stuff to get around without people knowing who made it, then you gotta start using a watermark — mostly cuz that's already enough for most people to not wanna repost it but even if they do, it can be traced back to you.

on a sidenote: being on this website and disparaging the work of gifmakers by saying shit like "you just put a color filter on it, it doesn't make it your work" is not just rude but also stupid and inaccurate.

you know how every ad you see on billboards and such are cut together from multiple different pictures taken by other people? so does the person editing those ads own the edits or do the multiple different people who cast the models, scouted the locations, took the photos and dealt with the timetables and accounting do?

giffing includes a hell of lot more than putting on a filter and you'd know that if you ever tried to edit anything. sure, it's a hobby and it's for fun, but let's not act like this place would be the same without all the gifsets.

ok i wanna make my own tips post for the redditors

hello welcome :] here's some things i've noticed it seems a lot of you aren't aware of. i might add more later:

first of all, PLEASE turn on custom theme! you don't have to actually make or find a theme yourself as it gives you a default one, (but it is really fun and good to personalize your blog however you want) but doing this makes it easier to view and search your own blog, as i will describe later. this makes it so that you will show up at yoururl.tumblr.com and not just tumblr.com/yoururl it gives you your own page! it's good!! you can only tick this setting on desktop:

another very important thing: DO NOT FUCKING REPOST ART WITHOUT CREDIT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. honestly you should not report art without permission at all, but at LEAST credit the artist. and saying "idk who did this but credit to them" DOES NOT COUNT. take some time to reverse google image search and find the artist. if you can't find them, DON'T REPOST!!! turning the art into a meme doesn't mean you don't have to credit the artist!!!!!! AAHHH!! ok.

TAGS/SEARCHING in reblogs, all tags serve to do is (a) leave a bit of quiet commentary, if you're too shy to leave it in the actual body of the post or (b) organize posts on Your Blog Only. tagging a reblog does not make the post show up in the searchable tag. reblogs are not searchable through the tumblr search bar.

to find posts from a certain tag on your own blog, go to yoururl.tumblr.com/tagged/tag. you can also add /chrono to the end of that url to view the posts in chronological order! you actually don't need to tag original posts with every variation of a tag either. for example if you tag something as "r/196", it will show up when just "196" is searched for, because it contains "196" in it. so you dont NEED to tag the post "196, r196, r/196" etc. but i mean. do whatever u want. honestly i think a lot of veteran tumblr users don't even know that. but yeah tagging with a ton of variations like that is unnecessary unless you're spelling something differently or doing an abbreviation as well as a full title, such as "#what we do in the shadows, #wwdits"

also, your posts are searchable by literally any word in the post, whether it be the body, the tags, or even your url. so if your url has 'catboy' in it, and someone searches 'catboy' they will see all of your original posts in the tag lmao. it is pretty stupid but that's how it works.

on that note, FILTERING with filtering tags, it is very specific. so if youre content warning tagging something, please just tag it with the word, like "#blood" because if you tag it "#cw blood" or "#blood ///" people who just have "#blood" blocked, will still see the post! lots of veteran tumblr users don't seem to grasp this either 😭

you can filter out words as well as tags, but that can get tricky because if you filter out "rape" words like "grape" and "drape" will also be blocked, so i only use the word filter to block peoples urls. because even if you have someone blocked, you can still see people reblogging their posts, so if u don't wanna see them at all, block their url as a filtered word.

you can do all of this in the regular ol' 'settings' tab on desktop. on mobile it's settings -> general settings -> filtering

PAGES something i love about tumblr but is getting used less and less is the ability to make separate pages on your blog. the option to do so is all the way at the bottom on the theme customization panel. (only available on desktop tumblr)

nowadays a lot of people just make a carrd and provide a link to that, but tumblr allows you to make your own separate blog pages! a lot of people use this to make "about me" pages, since it provides a lot more freedom than just the "blog description" section! you can put images on there, and just completely code the whole thing yourself! unfortunately, these pages aren't visible on mobile unless you link to them in your blog description (see my blog as an example) using <a href="link">link title</a> lots of people have links like this in their descriptions that lead to about pages or carrds! you should click on these to learn more about the person you're following!!

some people have "DNI (do not interact)" or "BYF (before you follow)" pages to set boundaries on who they do or don't want following them, as a warning of like "hey if you fall under this criteria and you follow/interact with me, you're getting blocked" so those are good to check for! some folks have lots of strong opinions on these that theyre "stupid" or "useless" but really it's just a warning and setting boundaries. like, if you follow me and ur not supposed to, i'm just gonna block you anyway, it was just a warning that that's what was gonna happen!

speaking of blocking, just fuckin' block whoever you want whenever you want. if you find someone annoying just block them. if they post something you don't like just block them. there's no need to get into an argument. just block! and they're gone! wheeee!!

SIDEBLOGS!!! you can have separate blogs from your main one that are connected to your same account! some people have tooooons of sideblogs for every single fandom they're in, some people just use their main for everything. it's up to you!

note that you can only like posts, send asks, follow people, and reply to posts under your main blog url. sideblogs are just for posting and reblogging in a more organized manner :] it's good to say in the description of your side blog what your main blog is so people know who you are when you like and reply to posts and such! (and also to list your sideblogs somewhere on ur main for the same reason. i use the aforementioned about page for this ^u^)

um that's it for now! there's a lot of other things i could talk about, but i'm sure other posts are covering it.. these are just ones i really want to iterate, especially the tags thing cause i think a lot of tumblr users don't even realize that lol ^u^ i've been active as fuck on tumblr since 2013 so I can answer questions if you have any :)

I'm sorry, Mari, I know you don't want to talk about it anymore, but why is it so problematic to repost other photos? I feel like one of the biggest reasons people do it is because they don't know why. I understand that you can't publish images of chapters that have to be paid for like webtoon or merch (although I don't know why either) but wmmap has already ended years ago so I don't understand what the problem would be.

Yeah, it's as you've said, firstly, because most of it is paid content. That's why you'll see that manhwa accounts on Twitter almost always post proof of them having purchased the chapters. Secondly, because this fandom has a huge reposting problem in general (art, fics, translations, edits, etc). For "regular" pictures I have less of an issue, but if it's "exclusive" content, I feel like I'm already edging the line of what is respectful to publish/leak. Yes, there are hundreds of illegal uploads of the manhwa, but that's not something I wanna promote. I wanna encourage people to support the author. Spoon has also spoken about this a bunch of times. But I guess some people might disagree with my stance.

Let me put it like this. When I stay up until 5am to watch a Chinese stream and get news about the donghua, and people immediately repost the pictures without keeping my @, it's tiring. When I spend my own money to attent Spoon's art class (at 3am), take notes, work with Japanese and Chinese fans/friends to provide English fans a translation and summary, and people immediately repost it without asking, it makes me wonder why I even bother. For pictures that have translated content (such as what Lithi does), I think it's way worse, because you are basically "stealing" their labor without any credit. Fan translators already operate in a grey area, legally speaking. There has been a lot of drama in the fandom around this subject, and in general, translators hate to see their work reposted. Most of them have deleted their translations because of this (Ever wonder why you can't find fan TLs of the novel very easily anymore? Lithi has also deleted a bunch of her novel posts and I don't blame her). Sure, reposting a single picture/page might not be big deal, but this has happened a million times.

And then there are instances when people straight up copy posts word for word, pic for pic, which is just kinda annoying/comes across as clout-chasing. Not reposting other people's posts is kind of online etiquette.

I want to talk to you about putting a watermark on your gifs.

It really is appreciable the effort you take to share them and for people to see what you are talking about.

But I think you are taking it to the extreme that they are "stolen" or are reposted without credits, many people do the same as you and have no problem that other people share it, because it really is material that does not belong to them as well as the yours.

I have even made posts of screenshots or gifs that have reached a lot of people to the point that they use those same images as their profile picture, it has also happened in my drawings.

I think you are doing unnecessary wear and tear when it comes to sharing screenshots or gifs of game scenes.

sorry but I don't really wanna debate this, I just want to watermark my stuff and I feel better this way. it really helped bring my motivation for gif making back

when it comes to footage I use, I always set up my recording tools and do it myself, even going into the games and playing just to record which takes a while. sometimes my chronic pain makes it extra effort but I do it because I don't want to use others footage. I then compile and cut on a slow laggy editor, save as clips individually, then convert each into gifs, assuring quality is decent and coloring tweaks and crops are made so it fits the file size limit

that can take hours specifically because I want it to be all my own effort and a lot of times I don't get many notes. so it being downloaded and reposted in seconds and getting much more kinda stings. I don't mind reposts if additional commentary is added or even as reaction images in convos or as pfps. just not uploading my stuff and having that be the whole post without anything else. I at least want credit then

since I make them I can decide if I wanna watermark. I make videos on YT unwatermaked and free to use without credit despite playing all the games and recording it myself- because it's meant to be a resource. my stuff here can be used but not just reposted without changes. and while I didn't animate them, they can take just as long as my smaller drawings and have the same amount of passion put into them

so I'm going to watermark from now on because tons of people do and really I should've from the start. it's not like they cover the entirety of the gif and ruin it, it's just small text. I'm also not the only one who's felt this way and I wish for all gif makers to get the credit they deserve because this can take effort. and as an artist and writer too, I don't see it as any lesser or undeserving of watermarks and credit

Quick Update

So I've been going through some stuff, from anxiety attacks to depressive episodes to insomnia... Just not a good mental healthy week! I've got food, I'm taking my meds, don't worry about it! Just know that because of that, I'm not very 'interactive' on tumblr!

Things aren't always tagged correctly, the dashboard can be overstimulating... It's not about any specific person or specific posts! (except whoever the fuck is reposting my art without consent that specific person is in my bad books)

Yesterday I found some of my art reposted without my PERMISSION and without even giving CREDIT. This is terrible for a number of reasons:

1.- It's disrespectful!

2.- AI art theft made easier by spreading my stuff around!

3.- The continued separation of the artists from the art within fandom spaces making fandom into a less enjoyable environment for artists! Especially for small artists who average less than 10 notes on an art piece only to find their stolen art receiving tons of attention! Can you imagine how that feels? I don't have to use imagination! IT FEELS LIKE CRAP.

Yep, I am still emotional. But I brought this up just to say I will be using watermarks from now on. I will also probably be going back and editing old pieces to add in watermarks.

It's upsetting that this is needed.

The normalization of just taking art because all you have to do is 'right click', 'save image'.... The fact fanfic authors are having to insert scripts into their fics so people can't 'copy and paste' their work... All of this is so depressing to me.

And I don't have the mental health to really muse on it.

So yeah... I would love to stay in contact with people on discord, and I will be posting some art later today before the depressing reality in which we live overcomes me and I quit art for another year or two because of it (trying not to do that again).

I'm not leaving tumblr, but right now tumblr and its lack of respect for artists and authors and just those who create stuff... It's making me sad. So until I stop being sad I will be less present on here. And that means that I might have a good day where I'm active followed by going inactive again... I just don't know.

I would like to start posting my art on other more effective platforms but haven't actually decided which ones yet. So any suggestions from artists are greatly appreciated!

A lot of my close friends are artists who have done commissions and stuff b4 and sometimes had their stuff reposted, and I've ALSO seen some artists on pixiv and fanbox n stuff remove all their accounts due to reposts so like. I do think it's important to give at least a basic source. These images don't just pop up overnight!!1! If you like it, it's worth it to try and find where its from PLUS THEN YOU GO TO THEIR PROFILE AND SEE MORE COOL ART!! every1 wins!!

Anyway I understand why some people don't give credit because it does sometimes take FOREVER to try and find the original source of some of the older images (which are often the coolest) and sometimes I CANT find SHIT besides reposts. Which is frustrating as fuck. But idk, some sources seem lost to the ages and that makes me sad. Like I wanna see more guts by whoever drew that, man... I like how those guts look, I wanna see the artist!!
