The time is here, and oh man, do I have a lot to say! Ever since this post was posted on my personal tumblr, on the fifth of may, I have been working like a machine on all things OUROBOROS. I had originally planned for this to just be a progress report/ announcement on what I will be working on now that I am free of the shackles of work, but, somehow, I managed to finish all bullet points, and more. So, let's get into it!

First off, the title.  Ouroboros becomes all capitalized OUROBOROS. Idk. It's neat. Next!

Art. Whew. I didn't think I could draw like this anymore- drawing has been more of a struggle than writing has been, forever, always- it was something I really strived to become good at, for a time. And I gave up. Only to pick it up again when I started ouro, and ever since I released that pressure, something just clicked and I have been churning out art like never before. I don't know if this is a fluke, a stroke of luck or if all that hard work I once did slaving away with menial art practice… but I'm grateful nonetheless. (A note on official RO art: I lost my ipad pencil somewhere on the lawn, lmao. I haven't been able to get a new one yet, so there is a slight delay here.) I am hoping that I get to make some commissions too, in the near future. Visit the forum to see some works in progress (amongst them, Yor's RO portrait!)

Onto the hellscape that is coding! I have been growing more proficient with CSS and html with the help of the ones that run so that we can walk; I have studied and researched and tested and tinkered until my eyes crossed, finding my way into this medium with the incredible guidance of the giants of whose shoulders I stand on. I will talk about this in detail on a later date. So I think it's finally time to reveal that yes, I am working on a twine version of ouro. I will develop it in tandem with choicescript; the porting over from one to the other isn't the herculean task I thought it would be.

Why am I doing this? Because I need to have a save system. I am continuing to write the whole alpha draft in choicescript in hopes that CoG will announce the ability to have a native save/checkpoint system, but if that doesn’t happen, I can’t publish this story without one. Unfortunately, I am not willing to code in a savesystem in choicescript myself, because this will be a large game, with far too many variables for that to be sustainable. Trust me, no one is more disappointed by that fact than me. If it comes to the point that twine publishing will be what I do, I will set my sights on writing a smaller game for hosted games.

Onto writing:

The best news out of this whole bunch is that I have worked so hard on editing and writing, that in the past month I have all but finished a two chapter update! I have a chunk of about 5-6 thousand words left to write, and I am going to buckle down over the weekend to see it through. I wanted to have it done so badly for today, but I lost three days of writing time last week due to still being weighed down with work. I hope it isn’t too disappointing to have to wait until monday for the demo update! I am going to post a link to an as-I-write updated demo on Patreon and Discord, if you want to see the ugly face of raw wip drafts. Otherwise I will post the demo update here on Monday with a comprehensive post!

And now!  the biggest news is… from now on, I am writing full time!

This is what I have been tossing and turning about every night ever since Easter. It started as a silly idea while talking to some friends and family about how I was looking for a change in career. And then, little by little, that idea whittled down to a plan, carefully carved by my partner and his whispers of a happy future, a finished dream project, and something to be proud of until the day I wither and die. 

Somewhere between then and now, I grasped a tiny sliver of bravery and held on for dear life. 

I quit my job as a teacher, and instead of accepting a cushy office job, I started behaving as if OUROBOROS and writing was my work (for all the moments I could afford). I have researched and tried different methods from week to week, and although I was still tired from work, I felt like I was onto something that could build into a sustainable future. 

I have no doubts that this journey will be bumpy and long, but sometimes all it takes is to take that first step, and do it with determination. It might all crash and burn and fail in a spectacular way, or with a whimper, but then I will know that I have tried. I will know that I gave myself the chance to be who I want to be, work on what means so much to me. 

And that’s it. I think the hardest part of formulating this post (I’ve written about 50 versions of it!) is getting to the point; the kernel of what makes it so special to me. So, in my heart of hearts, what I'm trying to tell you is that I'm gonna give it my all- and while I know the road to having a sustainable career in writing is rough and ever winding, I do know for sure that I am ready for a challenge, to pour my heart and soul into it until the day I rush out of the office screaming IT IS DONE. IT IS DOOOOONE!!!

The Adlers went on this little vacation thingy as a kind of team retreat thing and none of them know how to get away from work so of course, they were playing volleyball

You watched the game for a little while until the round was over

And ran up to kageyama and asked if you could play

The socially awkward dude that he is stumbled out an awkward “yeah sure” and soon you were on his team for the next round against hoshiumi and ushijima (because that’s a fair match up lol)

The first time you spiked a ball passed the two of them he just

He was in such shock he didn’t see ushijima serve and the ball hit him straight in the face

Which resulted in a bloody nose and the game to end a little early

Ushijima apologized of course but kageyama was more embarrassed than anything

He got all patched up and found you a couple minutes later

His nose was a little swollen and he was still pinching it trying to get it to stop being painful, but hey, he got to talk to you again

You offered to take him out to drinks one day when he felt better, to which he agreed and you two went on you first formal date later that week

Anyway thats on be being dumb lol anyway I hope you enjoyed! I hope that’s what you wanted lol i realize the last one I did might have been me interpreting it a little weird. mobile header tutorial

hello! I’m here to share how to create a header similar to these that i’ve done in the past. here are the tools i’m using:

photoshop cc 2018 (from @birdysources)

some picture of hoseok probably from either twitter or weverse i don’t remember lol

i included pictures and tried to make it VERY beginner friendly, but please, send me an ask or dm if i’m unclear at any point. it’s 2:38 am as i’m making this tutorial and i just downed my cold brew so i’m sorry if it’s messy

1: open your picture in photoshop (here’s the picture of hobi if u wanna follow along)

2: find the quick selection tool

you’ll find it in the left sidebar, fourth from the top. i’ll often use this and the tool above it (polygonal lasso tool) depending on the photo. the quick selection tool is faster but more tedious, in my opinion, but hoseok was easy enough to cut out just using the quick select. use both! whatever u are comfortable with. 

here are my settings for the tool:

i almost always keep it at 3px. unless the image is huge, then i’ll go up to 5px, but never really above that. 

3: trace over your subject(s) (aka hobi) by dragging the tool along the edges, until you’re happy with the accuracy: 

4: find Select and Mask (directly above the image):

and here are the settings i’m using:

then press ‘Ok’ !

5: Select Inverse (right click inside subject)

now we’re going to press ‘backspace’ on your keyboard, and the background will be gone~ 

make sure your file isn’t locked! it should be labeled ‘Layer 0′ and not ‘Background’ (if it’s locked, just double click it and press ‘Ok’ on the window that pops up)

after pressing backspace to delete the background, it should look like this: 

then deselect it all. now is the time to look closer at your newly made render and see if there’s any cleaning up to do. i’m good to go, so i’m gonna continue on with making my header. 

tip: drag the subject (hobi) with the move tool (very top tool on your left sidebar) to the center so he’s in the very middle. it should click to the center (you’ll see the pink line) 

it’s not necessary for the tutorial but if you plan on saving this render as a .png and dispersing the renders you make-- it’s just cleaner looking to have them centered! 

6: File > New 

i always use 800 x 430 for mobile headers. for gifs, i size it down to 650 x 349.

7: resize and drag hobi into the new canvas (Image > Image Resize) 

for single subjects like this i usually resize them to ~300 to ~400. whatever you think looks best tbh

now drag the file from its place up top:

then the file from where it’s labeled ‘Layer 0′

8: now hobi is inside the canvas where the actual header is going to be made~ you can get rid of the render, or save it as a .png, whatever u plan on doing w it

i’m gonna center my hobi for the header i plan on making! from this point it’s just gonna be coloring, sharpening, etc. if you’re interested in using any textures like flowers or bring in other renders of objects, DeviantArt is a great place to search for texture packs. @beapanda on DeviantArt makes beautiful resources (kpop and non kpop related) be sure to credit them or whoever u save ur textures from! 

for this header i’m not going to be using any outside resources, i just want my hobi to be the focus~ 

for the background, i’m gonna use a gradient from this site (this pack is 200 images. phew) 

i’m using no. 200 from that pack.

9: optional- i’m gonna make some extra layers and start coloring hobi using clipping masks. 

make a new layer > right click the new layer and find ‘create clippink mask’ > set the layer to either color, overlay, or multiply (whatever you think looks best and does what u are trying to achieve)

here i’ve just make layers to color things like his hair, his hoodie, and baby mang

here’s with vs without: 

and when you’re done, go ahead and right click your primary layer (subject layer) and click ‘merge clipping mask’.

10: coloring~ 

find a psd you like or being to color the header yourself. for this header i’m gonna be using a homemade psd. i’m not gonna go into detail bc there are sooo many places to find psds on tumblr and deviantart. just like you brought hobi into the header canvas, drag your psd there, and that’s how u apply a psd. 

when u are happy with the coloring, right click the bottom layer and flatten the image. 

11: topaz clean + unmask sharpen

topaz clean is an addition u have to manually add to your photoshop program. u can google how to do it, but if anyone’s struggling i can show u how i did if i remember (but i’m pretty sure i do)

topaz settings:

unsharp mask settings (go to filter > sharpen > unsharp mask): 

honestly, topaz is completely unnecessary, but i like the way it looks so i’m gonna go with it anyway. sharpening the header alone will still give you a great outcome

12: final step, header border time~

over on my film/tv blog @gusdapperton​ i’ve made a header template pack (click here if u just wanna use my premade borders) but for this tutorial i’m gonna show u how i actually made those (minus the cloud one, i was just fucking around lol) (it’s so simple)

>>> if u DO just save one of the borders i made in that pack, resize it so the width is at 800 and drag it to your header canvas. set the layer to ‘screen’ and bang there u go! 

BUT with that method u can’t change the color from white. so if u want a border with any other color, keep following the tutorial >>>

go to view > rulers and select that to show the rulers (duh)

click from inside the ruler (light grey) and drag out your guides. here are where i’m placing mine:

they should ‘snap’ right into place, but if they don’t, make sure u go to view > snap and that’ll fix it. u will know what i mean once u try it lol

select the curvature pen tool (right click the pen tool to show more tool options):

and begin to place your dots. thanks to the guides, these dots will also snap into place

here are mine: 

(i eyeballed the two in the middle, it doesn’t need to look perfect tbh)

this next step is sorta stupid but i haven’t found a better way to do it yet lol

to close the shape just make sure to closely follow the direction of the dot you last placed, then go around to make your way back to the first... it looks silly but like this:

just play around with the shape and the tool... u will get the hang of it lol

now look up ^ and press Selection

then ‘Ok’ in the next window. then boom~ there’s your selection for the border we’re about to make.

make a new layer then select the rectangular marquee tool (second from the top on the left sidebar) and either drag with your mouse or use the arrow keys to move the selection we just made. here is where i’m placing mine:

then select your paint bucket tool (if you can’t find it, right click the gradient tool and it’ll be one of the sub tools, like i showed u with the pen tool)

make a new layer, then fill it in (i’m using white)

you can stop there, but to make that line like i did in my border template pack, press the down arrow on your keyboard and go down 5-10 pixels, press backspace, go down the same amount of pixels, and re-fill that area. 

now unselect. there’s the border~ 

now go to view > clear guides to get rid of those. u don’t need em anymore :) i’m also going to move the border we’ve just made down to the bottom of the canvas since we don’t need that big gap there. 

>>> tip, don’t fill in the white directly on the layer if you wanna change the color. create a new layer on top of the border layer, right click > create clipping mask > fill the layer with the color u want for the background. example: 

it saves the integrity of the shape. if you color fill right over the white, look closely and you’ll see it looks sort of pixelated and not as clean or smooth. it’s subtle but noticeable enough to me where it bothers me. 

since this color i chose is kinda vibrant and clashes, i’m gonna help it out some. go back to the quick select tool and select everything inside your border layer. make a new layer, fill the layer with black (any color will do, it doesn’t matter) and set the fill to 0%. double click that new layer, and a new screen will pop up. go to drop shadow, find the settings you like, and boom. here’s what i did and what it’ll look like: 

now u are finished~ i didn’t do this but u can skip sharpening the header earlier in the tutorial and reflatten the image again to sharpen it at this point instead but, yknow, i didn’t do that lol

here’s the final product (save by going to file > export > save for web)

hey all, friendly request to NOT repost my gifs. if you wanna add one to a meta or crack post or something similar that's cool, just stick a link back to the original in it as well.

I'm seeing stuff pop up on twitter and tumblr again (gifmakers spend a ton of time on edits and we will recognize our own gifs) and I can't do much about it on twitter short of bothering every person who does it (which I'm not going to do but I will block you on every platform for that). I have and I will report any stolen complete reposted gifsets on tumblr and they do get taken down, so just don't do that. It's extremely rude.

(I do have this mentioned on my blog but I guess I'm going to have to add it to my mobile header as well, though I doubt that will help much).

some gifmakers don't care about this, but a lot do and there's been a rising annoyance about this on tumblr from some other gifmakers and it's going to end up with a lot people just not making gifs anymore, myself included. so, source or ask. cool? cool

also, if you see a gifset that is clearly stolen, don't reblog it. if the gifs are all different dimensions and the coloring is different that's a pretty big giveaway. also some people will literally tag or comment with "not my gifs". just don't reblog those. thanks

hi- I’m not sure if you’re the right person to ask, but I wanted to know how to start a fanfic writing tumblr- I mean, I’m just not sure how to start since I’ve never posted anything on my account- I’m sorry if this is an inconvenience-

Don’t worry about it. I’m a little offended that you would think you’re coming to the wrong place 😂.

Imma break it down for you.

First of all, if you’re on tumblr mobile, then that’s fantastic and we’ll start with that first. If you’re on desktop, I would like to suggest getting it on your phone because it’s more accessible and easier to manage than doing it on the computer. The only time I go to the computer is when I’m going to post fics, but we’ll get there.

I know you said you’re wondering how to start posting fics but I gotta give you some advice before that. Because there are just some things I cannot stand when it comes to some fanfic blogs, alright?

Be easy on your color scheme. I wouldn’t put any bright colors because it could hurt someone’s eyes, and sometimes it looks really bad. Going along with that, you should be careful what your second color is on your blog (let’s say that your base color was a maroon, and then you’d choose a color similar to that/darker than that. It’ll be hard to read the things in your bio, and it’s frustrating)

This is obvious, but make sure you have a profile and header picture, it’s more appealing rather than tumblrs default.

Turn ON asks and then proceed to do it for anonymous questions, because that’s the only way you get requests. Some people do it off anon but that’s not as common.

You can do this on desktop and a safari browser. It’s not possible to do on mobile just yet. Open up safari > log in > little person icon in the top right > edit appearance. Scroll until you see “let people as questions” turn that on. Turn on anon, and edit the box to whatever you want. Keep it short

Turn off “share posts you like” and the following one below it. It’s a risky game to play when it comes to what you’re looking at and liking.

No submission posts, normally people don’t submit things anyway. Turn OFF “on blog advertising” and then that’s it. It automatically saves so you can just leave to the next screen imma bout to tell you about

IF you go to my blog on desktop, you’ll see that there’s a theme. My font is different, I have a different set up than most blogs, etc.

If you wanna mess around with that, scroll to the top of page (you should still be on the same page from the anon instructions) and tap “edit theme”

It might take a second to load, but you’ll get there.

THIS SCREEN IS VERY IMPORTANT.

Besides the fact that it lets you edit your theme, this is how you put in a Masterlist, and all other links you might want in your bio.

You said you haven’t written anything yet, so there isn’t a need for a Masterlist just yet. But when you DO start posting, please come back to me and I’ll let you know how to put one in your bio, okay? Nice and shiny for your future followers.

If you wanna change your theme go to browse themes, change it from “all themes” to “free themes”. If you like mine, it’s called “Accesible”. If you just want the font, get out of the theme screen and scroll the screen on the left. Turn ON “open dyslexic

Remember, you can do all of this on desktop too, it doesn’t have to be on safari

Now onto posting, I have some opinions that might offend my mutuals (oopsie)

I can’t tell the difference, but PERSONALLY, I think posting fics on tumblr from my phone is gross. But that’s also because I’m writing 1000+ words normally and it gets difficult to post

If you want to post fics with more than 100 paragraphs, then you have to go to desktop or maybe safari tumblr (I don’t post from safari tumblr so idk if it works) because tumblr says NO paragraphs after 100 on mobile. There is no restriction on computer

I write in Google Docs, because it’s neater and I’ve discovered some hate for Word after deleting some of the shit I wrote over and over. Plus it’s an app, and you can open it up on computer. Easy to use.

If you use Notes on your phone, or type directly onto a tumblr post, then that’s fine but you don’t know your word count and it’s a little difficult to navigate.

When it comes to formatting, I used to have it be really long. But I’ve narrowed it down to 3, sometimes 4 things.

I’m using my own posts as an example right here, okay. But I have the summary and all of that bolder because it’s easier to see, and I want it to be different from the actual post. Most fanfic writers do this.

I also put 2 —‘s between the authors note at the top and the fic to also make a difference there

Don’t have the entire fic italicized, it takes away the special part of italicizing a word

Finally, it’s tagging.

I cannot stress this enough, DO NOT tag things that have nothing to do with the post. It’s my biggest pet peeve and it’s because I can’t comprehend why people tag (for example) Katrina Stuart when it’s a fic OR A RANDOM POST about someone else

Instead, let’s keep it simple.

I forgot to mention this. But choose your username wisely. You can change it later on, but it’s a goddamn pain in the ass when you have 50+ fanfics you wrote and your Masterlist is nice and clean only to realize that you have to RELINK every post individually

Listen, I changed my username on my old blog, and it took me 8 hours ROUGHLY to relink and fix every individual Masterlist. I had to create new masterlists, with so many tabs open to fix it

Instead, change it before you start fics

If you wanna be a colby brock blog, I have a canon url (which means that it’s so fucking GOOD and I’m angry that i realized it was open only a month ago rather than when I created this account) and it’s colbysbrocks (it’s a plural canon url). And I have colbysecrets too. If you don’t like either of those, I have a couple of other ideas that I wrote down if you want them

This is how you should tag:

Your username first, the person it’s about, the fandom (if it’s not Colby brock, then something like marvel, etc). Then the persons name, imagine, fanfic, x reader, and oneshot. Then if it was requested

Notice that I tagged both of his names. I do this because it draws more people in, and more people will be attracted to it (however, in the Star Wars fandom there’s a difference between Ben Solo and Kylo-Ren, so you would have to specify in the title Ex. Resistance (Ben Solo) or Struggle (Kylo-Ren). It would depend on which persona you’re using

This works for a couple of fandoms, like twilight and shit like that

EXAMPLE THREE:

(Final one, I just wanted to cover this base just in case)

If it’s a request for more than one person. Let’s say Colby Brock and Sam Golbach (like a Polyamorous relationship, if it’s just about a bunch of people, tag the people in it and don’t put the imagine, fanfic, x reader, oneshot after any of them, it doesn’t apply)

If it’s a poly relationship (or maybe more) then do everything you normally do for one person, and then just add on the second;

Azurebrock, Colby brock, Sam Golbach, Colby brock imagine, Sam Golbach imagine, etc

If you’re on desktop, I would suggest putting in a Read More (this goes BEFORE your fic but after the authors note, below the 2 —‘s). The way you do that is press enter, and hover over the new break in the fic.

Off to the right you’ll see a . . . Click that and then you have the read more. I would only suggest using this if there’s more than 500 words, so that if the fic is super long, it doesn’t take up the entire dash for the follower (it takes forever to scroll and it’s annoying

If you’re on mobile, it isn’t possible. Just post and you can go back and edit later if you have a computer

it's a huge factor. if a comic is amazing in every way but the website or app makes it difficult for me to read i'm simply NOT going to read it. there are a lot of great series that i've put on the back burner just because the website is so annoying to navigate

The worst things with sites that I see often are 1: huge headers, and 2: laggy sites (not really site design, but its adjacent I think) Another is if the pages are too big on the screen, so you can't, for instance, see some panels all at once. Those kinds of things can really ruin a reading experience for me

One example of a website that is hostile to the reading experience is ZMYK which for some reason hosts vertical scroll comics but cuts them up into little pieces as if they were comic format so you can't actually scroll through the entire chapter as it was intended to

That kind of thing grinds my gears so much how can something you have to pay for be that incredibly bad

I've also seen some sites that have graphic design issues, where elements are illegible due to their color, and some have very busy and distracting backgrounds. Those kinds of things won't necessarily ruin it, but they're distracting

forward comic's website was doing this weird thing where the further I read the longer pages took to load. Near the end it seemed they were taking 10 full seconds. Still read the whole thing though. Reading manga on shady sites with terrible internet connection as a kid has desensitized me

Oh one comic I was interested in but didn't read because of the site: I was kidnapped by lesbian pirates from outer space. It doesn't have a website. To read it you have to pirate (hehe) copies of the archive.

It's a pretty sad story- the author was young and tricked into giving up the rights to her series

She ended up taking the site down to prevent the company from getting any more money off of it

For me, the biggest thing that deters me from reading a comic is if the website isn't well optimized for mobile (as someone who reads a lot on the go). This includes the images loading bigger than the page, or navigation being hidden on mobile, or glitchy scrolling, or any number of ungodly things. Also, too many ads. That'll turn me away in a heartbeat.

it's a shame because there are genuinely good comics on there you can't read anywhere else?? and i found it because an artist i adore did a series for it but it got AXED after only 2 chapters and after that was pretty much scrubbed from the internet. i think it's a shame because it really had so much potential and it ended before the story was really able to start

it's a screenshot from the app. you can see that it is categorized reverse chronologically by week

the point of aqua kiss is to emulate monthly/weekly style manga magazines but in app form. however i think the execution of this idea was horrendous

Honestly nowadays most of the CMS's out there share the same basic functionality and adaptability, so it's getting harder to screw up on that. Most sites are OK, if only a bit laggy. If the site takes less than 2 seconds to load and it's not so crowded that I have to look for the comic, I'm generally good.

I've dropped a couple series in the middle of the archive just because they changed the site design to screw up the tracking of bookmarking sites, so I would've had to figure out an alternate way to keep track of it, and it didn't seem worth the effort

Oh yeah, I've totally had that happen too where I was deep into an archive, had taken a reading break for a month or two, and came back to find the urls had been updated and my spot was lost it isn't so bad if a comic also has an archive page, but ive stopped reading a few stories that it would have been too hard to track down where I was.

So, I always try to read every comic that's featured in the book club all the way through. Like even if I don't particularly like the opening, or if the comic is thousands of pages long, or I don't have time to meaningfully discuss the comic, I do try to at least give the comic a fair shake by reading through the entire archive. There have been four exceptions. One was because of content (it was a gag a day comic, and the content was SO horrible for SO long that I just couldn't stand it anymore. real "punching down" type of humor). Another was because the comic was literally deleted before I could get to it. The remaining two were because the site design/organization were so awful that the comics were unreadable. One of the two comics had a custom built, hand-coded site (I assume), and it just... didn't work properly. Like the "previous" button seemingly took you to a random page, the "next" button and the "latest" button led to the same place, etc. I'm not sure the creator ever bothered to test the site. The other one used some pre-built stuff, so it was ok... but you had to scroll to the top of the page to go to the next page. Not only that, but the author was posting all their comics to the same archive - which means one page would be the comic that was actually meant to be read for the book club and the next few pages were a completely different comic entirely. And this wasn't a gag-a-day either - it was a story based comic, so the three action minimum to get to the next page made things absolute hell to keep track of.(edited)

Not really a design but a site thing: I can't do comics without an archive of some sort. On platforms like Tapas or WT, the episode list serves that purpose perfectly fine. I personally need to be able to see how many pages there are, and I need a way to go to specific pages easily. It might sound like a small complaint, but it's a big thing for me! There have been comics that piqued my interest, but once I saw that there was no archive of any form, I left forever. Sure, I might be missing out, but there are also lots of good comics out there that have accessible archives. My life isn't long enough to read them all, so I'm letting myself be very picky.

I can manage a very basic site just fine. But if a site is hard to navigate, or just makes reading the page/getting to the next page difficult - I'd be likely to give up eventually. Doesn't matter about the quality of the comic, but if it's a chore to just read it, it's going to put me off after a while

For example - when I read webcomics on dA, I was absolutely fine with either the author having a dedicated folder with the pages in order. Another option was to link next and prev pages in the description. But if I had to go find each next page, I just wouldn't.

the comic that alternated storylines & required scrolling back up to go to the next page was Antibunny: http://vinnied.comicgenesis.com/d/20061002.html if you see that page I linked and click next a few times, there's no obvious distinction between the main story and the spinoff story (no, like, header change between the two, and the art style looks similar), so you can see how it'd be confusing to follow and the scrolling is just icing on the cake (it used to be even worse) the only reason I feel comfortable sharing that is because the author uploaded the comics to new sites, and fixed all those issues in the process: http://antibunny.net/

I def like arrows on the top and bottom of pages for sites to be more of a thing, as well as clicking the image for the next page too! Honestly there hasn't been a make or break, mainly preferences, and the most complaints i have are with the mobile formatting. I think most comics have been pretty solid in functionality that i've read, and it's clear that having their own website is becoming mainstream enough for there to be help, tips, and tricks to making it work!

mm archives were mentioned already, and how it can really turn readers away to simply not have one at all? my favorite archive is https://www.vaingloriouscomic.com/comic/archive 's but i've seen some where they attempted an all picture archive and it backfired by just being a page of all empty boxes. this didn't deter me from reading it and it got fixed pretty quick tho~ mine is one of these and its a very chonky slowmoving page cause i uploaded the first 90ish as fullsized pictures. nobody's ever complained so idk if it's ever deterred anyone from reading but i know i gotta fix it someday.(edited)

I would say poor web design is something I have a complicated relationship regarding webcomics. On the one hand, outside of a site being 100% completely broken, I'm willing to sit through a lot to read. So in terms of affecting whether I read a comic the first time or not, there isn't much to say there. But it does affect how engaged I am with the comic. Cause if I can't easily go back to re-read a page, easily find things like character names, have to deal with extreme lag cause the host is garbage, have to deal with eye bleeding color schemes, etc. you can bet your bottom dollar 1 time is all that comic is going to get in terms of reading it. I can only subject myself to so much, and if I don't feel like reading a comic again because of the site itself, I'm going to quickly forget it in favor of comics whose sites don't make me cry. I do give more leeway to sites created by creators in many respects. But professional bigtime hosts like Tapas or Webtoons literally have no excuse for some of their garbage design choices. And some of their design choices are super duper garbage.

At the same time, though, I know from first hand experience that poor design choices are literally influenced by user data for bigger companies. So for every decision I consider stupid- at the same time they probably did the AB tests that showed crappy design A had better results for their conversion rates than user friendly design B.

Rebel mentioned sites that have eyebleedy color schemes and I'm in the same boat; will read the comic, just will be turning down the screen brightness a looot. Sites that have a huge space of extremely neon background that distracts from the comic make me reluctant to read on the site, and I'll look for a mirror before trying. That white background of the 2 big comic hosting sites can at least be affected and turned dark by nightmode when needed, while nightmode doesn't work on half the bright comic sites I've tried it on. u-u

What’s up, everyone?

So, just a quick update for my friends. After earlier this week, I needed a break from tumblr, so I hopped on only to scroll my dashboard and like some posts to queue. But I’m better now and I’m back.

To help clear my head, I changed some things. I changed the color on my blog and the side gif of Steve on the desktop version. On the mobile version, you’ll also find the new color and a new header gif of Bucky. I was tired of seeing the Endgame ones from the trailer when we didn’t get that part of the scene (for the header) and the movie was such a let down. So I used ones I made from Winter Soldier. Let me know what you think!

I also changed my icon. It might change again but for right now I really like it.

I upped the number of posts my queue spits out a day to clear it out. I’ve had a queue running for over a year now so often events are two weeks behind because of...some reason I can’t think of anymore. Anyway. Just wanted to let you guys know.

Finally, making the gifs for my header and sidepicture was fun so I might start making my own gifs again soon. And I’m working on a couple of fics I hope to publish soon. And later tonight, I’ll start my recaps for this week’s figure skating Grand Prix.

app:

constantly goes “u h oh blOOp boOP where ht INTErnet go Bye ByewhOOPSie daisy!!1″ even tho every other app has No Problem w/ the internet, i literally have to restart this thing 20 fuckin times a day to get it to load basic ass shit like the fuckign dashboard & search & my notifications & literally every other function there possibly is

search on blogs is garbage & even if u go into an actual tag on a blog it won’t show everything in the tag bc fuck you

the dash randomly teleporting u to a different spot on it after reblogging smth sometimes, usually after u turned off ur phone screen & then went back to it later, even if u didnt leave the app (the same process is a source of the “bloop boop” messages)

the instant messaging thing doesn’t show u new messages sometimes even if u have the same convo open on desktop. in fact it works the other way around too. tumblr in general does NOT like it when u have the same convo open on different devices

sometimes straight up doesn’t give me notifications for conversations & i have to find out i was accidentally ignoring someone hours later when i get on my laptop (if i even decide to use it that day!)

the amount of storage this app sucks up is Annoyingly A Lot. constantly clearing the cache bc it’s usually like 80 fuckin mb

desktop: 

if u use pages instead of infinite scroll on the dash the previous page button straight up does not work & will just take u to the current front page no matter how many pages in u were

hitting the back button on ur browser (or at least on chrome) does the exact same thing, unless you 1. wait for the page ur on to finish loading, 2. scroll down a little bit (just don’t leave it at the top of the page), and then hit the browser’s back arrow, then there’s a better chance it’ll work properly (yeah that’s right it doesn’t even work 100% of the time u just gotta hope & keep going back until it works)

tumblr literally just randomly changing the page url from like “/dashboard/20″ to just “/dashboard” so that both refreshing & clicking the back button just take u to the front page again

related to the last one, if ur like 20 pages deep in ur dash & u leave the tab for too long that ur browser (or again at least in chrome’s case) has to reload the page, when u go back to it it just gives u the current front page bc it changed the url to “/dashboard” & now it thinks this is the front page (if u were back further than like page 2 u can try to fix this by hitting the browser’s back button & hoping for the best)

the fact that u can’t manually go to random pages on ur dash by typing “dashboard/[number]” anymore bc why would we hold onto useless functionality like that. so if ur rly far back in ur dash & u lose the page bc of any of the previously mentioned garbage ur fucked 

(unless u go into ur actual browser history & find the page w/ the correct url like “/dashboard/25″ or if u don’t know the specific number then usually the url w/ the biggest number. u can also kind of estimate by opening the page from ur history & hovering over the top right corner of any post to see what time in ur timezone that particular post was made/reblogged, that way u can find the page w/ the earliest or most accurate to your memory timestamp & assume that’s the right one. i just thought of this method today & i am very pleased with myself but also very annoyed that this website is so shitty i have to find such convoluted workarounds GOD)

search is just straight up garbage. the ONLY thing that mobile has over desktop is that the search actually shows the most recent posts w/o skipping any (any of the posts that actually Made it into search results, that is)

app-less mobile gets an honorable mention bc i don’t use it anymore & haven’t for years but 1. that thing where u try to like a post & it’s like “ohh you don’t have the app?? you fucking loser??? you fucking whiny ass child can’t even use our mobile app???? eat shit” is really annoying and 2. the dash has this header that’s like “open this in the app!” so one time i was like “ok” bc i had the app at that point & it didn’t even take me to the app it just opened up the tumblr download page on app store like fuckin. Ok

anyway theres so much more i could complain about especially on the topic of search but this is so much longer than i meant to go on for anyway so basically. the “this site is barely held together by glue & duct tape” sentiment is NO exaggeration, u couldnt make this shit up, jeez

You and Peter Parker have this arrangement; you call, he arrives, and you swing through New York City, clutching onto Spider-Man. 

At first, it was terrifying. The rushing movement of soaring through the air with only Peter’s arm stopping you from falling always twisted your stomach into a knot. But then you began to relax into Peter’s side, and you started to appreciate the wind in your hair and the warmth of Peter’s body against yours. In the end, you were no longer afraid of heights. Just your feelings. 

You stare down at Peter’s name which greets you from the other side of your mobile’s screen. You bite your lip, studying the curve of the ‘e’ in ‘Pete’, thinking back to the time when you took that horrendous photo of Peter for his contact photo. Downstairs, your step-mother hurls a plate at your father and it crashes against the wall with a shrill shriek. 

You call. 

The phone rings twice before he picks up. 

“Hey.” You smile at the sound of his voice as it drowns out everything else. 

“Hey.” Your voice is barely a whisper, and the tone breathes ‘Can you please come and get me?’

There’s a brief pause. 

“I’m on my way.” 

Five minutes pass before he arrives with a whoosh. He doesn’t even get a chance to pull his mask off before you’re climbing out the window and wrapping your arms around his neck. 

“Thanks for coming,” you murmur into his ear, and your heart flutters as he wraps an arm around your waist. 

“I’m always here for you,” he breathes and then your swept into the night air.

The Empire State Building has the best view of the city. 

The breeze is cool as it caresses the skin of your cheeks, tearing through your hair and leaving chills down your spine as you gaze down at New York City. The glowing landscape stretches out as far as the eye can see, freckled with hundreds of amber lights that sparkle like stars. 

There really is no place like New York.

“You cold?” Peter asks, his eyes gentle and benign. Your skin is cold, but your heart is gushing golden warmth like a burning sunset. 

“A little,” you smile and Peter drapes a blanket across your shoulders before wrapping an arm around your waist and holding you close. With his free hand, Peter holds open a box of pizza you picked up along the way and you reach forward to snatch a piece. 

“Okay, I’m giving this pizza two pepperoni stars,” you say through a mouthful of pizza. You, Peter, Ned and MJ had a running tradition of rating Pizza’s using ‘pepperoni stars.’ 

“Only two?” Peter asks as he takes a bite. A string of mozzarella cheese dangles from his lip and his tongue darts out and chases it back into his mouth, “I think I’m giving it three and a half pepperoni stars.” 

You scoff. “You’re too nice.”

“Too nice?” Peter frowns, “You wanna pizza me?” 

You roll your eyes as a grin cracks across your face. “That was a cheesy pun and you know it.” 

“Oh please, my puns can’t be topped.” 

“Cheesus crust we need help.” 

“I’m starting to see why Ned refuses to acknowledge our presence.” 

“Poor Ned,” you smile, “We practically forced our friendship onto him. He had no choice.” 

“Still, he would be helpless without our awful puns and pop-culture references.” 

“Definitely!” you grin, “In a way, we sort-of saved him. He should be thankful.” 

A huge gust of wind threatens to blow the blanket from your shoulders and it takes off with Spider-Man’s mask. Peter curses as he chases after it, leaving you behind with the pizza. 

“Leaving me alone with the pizza was a huge mistake, Pete,” you call after him and you hear Peter laugh distantly. 

“I’m not too concerned since you only gave it two pepperoni stars.” 

“It’s still pizza!” 

Peter’s phone buzzes to life, light illuminating from the screen. You peer over, curiously, innocently, expecting a shopping list from May or a meme from MJ. Instead, you read an odd text from Ned, one that’s soaked in context. 

Tell her, idiot.

You feel guilty for prying, but your hand still reaches out to grasp his phone. Before you can unlock it, though, you hear echoes of Peter’s footsteps and you toss his phone as far away from you as you can. Peter returns, beaming, his mask dangling from a thread of web. 

“You managed to refrain yourself from devouring the entire box!” he exclaims, feigning shock. 

“Only just. You should count yourself lucky. I don’t do this for just anyone.” 

“I count every minute that I spend with you lucky.” Peter blurts out and then his mouth clamps shut. A soft pink stains his cheeks adorably. He looks offensively handsome when he blushes. 

You’re not sure what to say to that so you change the subject. 

“Someone sent you a message. Not that I was looking (Liar) but I–I just heard your phone buzz.” 

“O–Oh,” Peter splutters, and he looks grateful for the change of subject. He bends down and you watch his expression carefully as he reads the text. His face is unreadable. 

“Who was it?” you ask, testing the waters. You watch as hesitation and embarrassment ripple across Peter’s face. 

“Just Ned.”

“What’d he say?” 

“Nothing important.” 

“Really?”

“Y–Yeah. Nothing Ned says is important.” 

“Huh. Are you sure?” 

“Yes.” 

Silence, and then–

“Are you sure you’re sure.” 

Peter narrows his eyes suspiciously on you, “Why do you want to know so badly.” 

Your cheeks burn as you sigh and squeeze your eyes shut, screwing up your courage. 

“Because I lied. I did see Ned’s text I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to, I was just sitting here and it was there and – I didn’t mean to intrude I –”

You’re silenced by Peter’s lips as he leans forward and kisses you and it’s everything you’ve ever imagined; fireworks burst behind your closed eyes, honey trickles over your lips and seeps down your spine, and stars dance inside your chest. 

Your lips move together as his hand reaches up to cup your cheek, your fingers climbing up his shoulders, up his neck, to tangle in his hair. His hair is as soft as his lips, smooth and silky and melting between your fingers like chocolate, and the kiss deepens as he pulls you closer. 

It’s soft and sweet and delicate. 

When you break away, he presses his forehead against yours and you exhale a dreamy sigh. 

“Thanks,” you breathe, “For everything.”

Peter smiles, brown eyes flicking from your warm gaze to your swollen lips, “I’m always here for you.”

Half of the population has suddenly vanished, leaving a gaping hole in the wake of their absence. 

You call. 

It rings ten times then goes to voicemail.

Hi! Hello. Hey there. So here’s the thing. 

I don’t really have tag lists, per se. When I wrote, which feels like eons and ages ago these days, I had a group of friends and followers who trusted me with a good story and I trusted them with my words. They did not let me down. 

But these days, it feels a little like I let them down. Or maybe my words let us all down. 

Whatever the case, I don’t write anymore. And I don’t post a ton either. I lurk. You’ll find a random “fuck the man” post here and there; maybe a hint into another show I’m watching (or re-watching) from time to time; possibly an adorable puppy or small animal designed to steal your heart right out of your chest; Steve or Thor (see previous item). I also never wrote RPF. I read it from time to time, but just can’t get into the swing of that. No judgement, just a fact.

So what I did, dear new friend (who is welcome to turn away when you find out what you came here for is gone), is reblogged my mobile masterlist, just in case you can’t access the one in my header. You should find it on the post just below this one on my blog. I noticed on my phone that some of the links were missing, so I tried to fix them, but I don’t know if it worked and if it didn’t, I don’t know what else to try. I see some folks from time to time who post a new thing with a note that the spark has returned. I sincerely hope the same will happen for me one day. FAQ update

I decided to post the FAQ as a separate post so it’s more searchable on mobile, as there have been a lot of asks that are simply impossible to answer lately. So doing this will hopefully make the FAQ easier for people to find.

Please remember that I am not your personal search engine. Please use the search function to see if I have already answered your question before submitting. Also please be aware that it may take you weeks to get an answer, and many questions will not be answered at all. Urgent questions are not appropriate.

I am not actually a pet care blog, I am not going to tell you how to care for your mouse/rat/gerbil/fish/bunyip

I don’t really do behavioral questions, especially about one particular animal. That’s not the scope of this blog, too difficult to understand what’s going on through an anon question without seeing the behavior and in some cases it calls for specific case advice which I can’t give you anyway.

I am not a substitute for seeking professional help with mental health. I can do a little first aid if you happen to catch me online, but that’s it. A bandaid wont fix a broken bone.

I am in Australia. We do not have Rabies, wolves, gerbils, hamsters or chinchillas, etc

I do bite sometimes.

Q. I have a gofundme for vet expenses…

A. I gotta give a hard pass on that one. I cannot and will not be going around sharing various gofundme and other crowd sourcing links for vet expenses or anything else. Please understand, once I say yes to one, I have to say yes to all of them or justify why I said no to one, so my rule is I say no to all of them unless I have personally donated.

Q. Can you give me advice to get into a veterinary medicine course?

A. I could only offer general advice about Australian courses, as I have no experience with international systems, and the course I completed has since been revamped. It was over a decade ago that I was applying for vet school, my information may well be out of date, and the USA system is a weird alien place for me. I don’t know or care what freshmen or seniors are, and when I went through uni I didn’t have a major.

Q. Can you give me medical advice about my pet?

A.  No. Please understand no. The only answer I can give you is ‘take it to your local vet’. It’s actually illegal and unethical for me to give specific veterinary advice about an animal I have not physically examined, or that lives outside of the state of Australia that I am currently registered in. I can give you advice about whether you should see a specialist or how to find one, or general information about a condition, but I will not discuss specifics of any one medical case that I am not personally involved in.

Q. Have you written a post or breed evaluation on X?

Please, please, use the search function before asking. There is a good chance I already have. Here’s a Masterlist.

Q. Are the vet stories real?

A. The stories and cases are real, some details have been obscured to prevent identification. Good luck figuring out which ones.

Q. Who drew your art/header/avatars?

Definitely not me. Generally speaking any art has been drawn by the person submitting it, unless they have requested anonymity. The header image and avatars are drawn by the lovely c-rowlesdraws.(LINK)

Q. What’s a “question tax”?

A, A question tax is a silly ‘toll’ that I hoped people would do when asking me their many, many questions. It varies from time to time, but are generally non-vet related questions like “What type of Pokemon would I be” or “Came for the X but stayed for the Y”. These things are optional, but they made me feel more like a human and less like an automated answer bot. I’m not overly worried about it anymore, in fact I often forget to answer them now.

Q. Why does it take so long to get an answer to my question?

A. Because there might be more than 100 questions waiting in my inbox, and I only answer around 2 a day. You have about a 15-20% of getting your question answered, but if you didn’t read the FAQ or decided to ignore it, that chance will be zero.

Q. Can I send you a photo of my pet?

Of course you can, but please be patient before it’s posted. Sometimes there’s a big of a queue, I enjoy seeing other people’s pets.

The pet needs to be your own though, or you need permission to post somebody else’s pet, and I’m reluctant to post pictures with the faces of minors in them.I will also not be posting pictures of pets with cropped ears, docked tails or extreme anatomy that compromises welfare which shows these characteristics in a positive light. This is nothing personal against the animals, which I’m sure are lovely, but against the practice
