Rufus Vs Reeve Ch 3
AO3 Link
Your keycard already grants you access to the 70th floor and the president’s office. You step through the doors and the silence is heavy with expectation of your ability to fill Rufus’ shoes. It's nothing like yesterday. You swallow nervously. Even if he treats you well, it seems the previous president’s ghost still oppressively haunts the place. Or so it feels. You wonder if it haunts Rufus, as well.
You choose to brush it off as the overuse of black paint getting to you again and walk over to sit behind the desk. A notable absence is Darkstar. You have to admit it's cute that Rufus brings that monster of a dog everywhere he can. On the desk rests a pile of thick folders, which you assume are the numbers Rufus promised to leave you.
You belatedly wonder if you were manipulated into this. There's still time to avoid getting too deep, you tell yourself.
Next to them is a goldenrod-coloured sticky note with a single word in neat writing on it. ‘Lemon77,’ it reads. ‘77 is his birth year.
You smirk. “Really?”
You assume it’s a password of some kind and move it to the side to use as a reference.
Your experience in your own office translates well to whatever work Rufus has left for you. You answer the phone every once in a while and write down summaries of what you think is important. You find an electronic pad in one of the drawers. There’s another drawer with a box. After staring at it for a while, you realize it’s a box of spare shotgun ammunition. You’ve been working here long enough to know this is one of those times when you should pretend to see nothing. You close the drawer immediately and pick up the pad, instead. The password he left signs you into his official mailbox. You see the mass company mail everyone gets, as well as some intended for Rufus' eyes only. Some of it looks interesting but none of it looks urgent. You wonder if any of the mail would give you a clue if Rufus is working on the Sector 7 rebuild but nothing jumps out at you. You lock the screen and place it on the desk. You're playing administrator, if anything. Nothing pressing comes up.
You rock back and forth in the president’s chair. It’s more comfortable than it looks, you decide. For a few moments, you wonder if there are cameras with a live feed in this office. Then you decide, to heck with it . As casually as you can muster, you fold and tuck the password sticky into your suit pocket. You might not get a sample of Rufus’ writing again and he's smart enough to know to change his password, anyway.
Too much time passes without any productivity, making you antsy. You decide to start with the overall Public Safety budget. You could have gone with Space and Aeronautics for an easier start but somewhere in the middle seemed best. You sweep your gaze over the lists of numbers. Based on your years of experience, you decide to search the desk drawers for a pen. This is already going to be involved. After finding a pen, you impatiently throw the lid over your shoulder and stand up, scribbling notes and circling where to dive deeper later. You probably look like a mad scientist bent over the desk but you don't get to where you are without knowing how to commit.
After standing up straight to look at the mess you made, you decide, yes, it was better not to start with something more complicated. Weapons Development churns out so many advancements that the details would probably make you dizzy. And that's just the stuff you know about. The ink on your fingers is already dry so rubbing them does nothing.
You need something to help you come down from the flurry. You tuck the paper away in the folder and pick up your personal phone to call Reeve.
It's strange to see Reeve being cautious. His steps down the red carpet are hesitant. You watch him in amusement, holding the lidless pen and running your thumb over the raised letters printed on the side. They probably say ‘Shinra, Inc’ or something but you haven't bothered to look.
Is this what it's like for Rufus when someone approaches his desk?
“Director,” you say loudly, “it's just me.”
He hurries the last few steps. “They're not back yet?”
“They?” you ask.
“Ah,” he says, scratching the back of his neck.
His short answer suggests he said something he's not supposed to. You let the matter drop. You rest your arms on the desk. It doesn't take much to start chatting like you two usually do.
Reeve is relaxed like usual but you catch him staring into space several times. The words he says are what you expect but the space between his replies are not. He rubs his forehead like he has a headache. You're starting to feel bad for calling him up here when the phone rings.
You pick it up.
“It's Rufus.” Just ‘Rufus,’ not ‘the president.’
“Yeah, Sir.” You hear helicopter blades in the background. You're dying to know where he went but you know better than to ask.
“I’m going to need you to fill in for me tomorrow, as well. Something even more important came up.”
You haven't heard him sound excited like that before. That, and he’s the boss, so you agree to it. After hanging up, you explain to Reeve what just happened. His eyebrows rise temporarily in surprise. You tilt your head, studying him, and wondering why it’s you up here and not him. Does Rufus not trust this man like you do? If so, why?
“Anyway,” you say, “wish me luck.”
He places a hand on your shoulder, regarding you with exaggerated sympathy. “You’ll need it.”
You grin.
The sound of helicopter blades makes a return. Departing from the helicopter first is Tseng. He is leading who are two more Turks, judging by their similar attire. One tall, bald gentleman and a much shorter blonde woman. You rise from the chair and join Reeve. You nod at Tseng as he goes by, partially out of respectful fear. The Turks that follow eye you curiously but ultimately disregard your presence. The president follows, so you both greet him politely. He looks from you to Reeve, his nose wrinkling as if he’s about to sneer.
“You can go home.”
It seems you both assumed he was talking to both of you so you ended up in the elevator together, heading towards the ground floor. Silence with Reeve had become comfortable at this point in your relationship so you let your mind turn to why the president had been so frosty just now. It was a complete change from how he sounded on the phone.
“Are you alright?” Reeve asks.
You peek over at him. There’s just friendly concern on his face but you’re almost overcome with the urge to kiss him. To kiss him deeply, hungrily, and up against the elevator wall. You don’t, however. You recognize this for it is: a need for a distraction. You swallow, willing it away.
Reeve takes your swallow for something else. He reaches an arm around your shoulders and hugs you to his side. He kisses the side of your head. The softness of it dulls the shock you feel. Instead, it’s mostly just nice . The elevator beeps to announce the end of its journey and he gets out. He waves at you and heads farther into the lobby.
“See you tomorrow!” you force yourself to call after him, to end the silence and mitigate any embarrassment he might be feeling because of it. He didn’t look embarrassed but just in case. It’s not his fault you’re stuck in your own head right now.
The next day, you arrive at the president's office alone for the second time. You could start getting used to this, you think. But anxiety falls on that feeling a ton of bricks. You wouldn't dare. Not in Shinra.
The new password is ‘Chocolate72’. ‘72 is your birth year. You feel like he's teasing you at this point. You allow yourself a small blush before digging in the drawers for that pad to check the mail. There's nothing about Sector 7 again. It's only been a day but you still hoped to see some correspondence between Reeve and Rufus concerning it. You're a little disappointed.
There's a new draft of the Public Safety budget on the top of the pile today. You don't think it’ll make a difference but you skim over it. Going down the list of numbers, you see that you would make the same notes. Until you get to the portion covering widow and widower’s compensations. It has grown exponentially. Several times. SOLDIER’s, too. Panic starts vibrating anxiously in your chest over what this means. Hundreds of Shinra employees died recently. It wasn't on the news, nor did you hear anything through the grapevine. Shinra hasn't responded to Wutai’s provocations yet so it can't be that.
Suddenly, you're not sure about how you feel about President Rufus. If he knows about this. Or worse, if he was involved…
The president is late getting back. You decide not to wait up. If he showed up now, he'd just see the anxiety on your face. You tidy up at your usual quitting time and leave. You call Reeve when you get home. He doesn't return your call until late, which only adds to your stress. When he finally gets back to you, he invites you to have a drink with him as an apology. You choose to go to his place because you don't want to be out around people right now. That seems to make him happy.
You arrive at his apartment. He stands in the kitchen empty-handed, perhaps waiting for you to comment on his home. It's cozy. There's quite a few knickknacks that you don't recognize, suggesting he's travelled a lot. There's several framed pictures, one of which is him as a boy with a woman standing next to him, in a field under a tree. This seems like a normal home to you.
“Don't you make more than me?” you ask. “How come we have similar places?”
“I can't bring myself to spend more,” is the idle answer.
You're not sure what he means by that. There must be a story behind it. You plan to gently pry it out of him in an hour, after the drink he hands you is taking full effect.
Sitting on his sofa, Reeve doesn't ask you yet why you called him. Maybe he's hoping this is a social call. You end up describing the desserts you shared with Rufus a few days ago because the guilt has worn off by now.
“I haven't heard of something like that in Midgar.”
“Well, if you don't know-”
“It must be from a personal chef!” he exclaims. The drink is hitting him now.
“That's rude,” you mutter.
“What? Me?”
“No. He's keeping the good stuff for himself.”
“No. I refuse to believe my Midgar couldn't beat a Shinra chef.”
“ Your Midgar?” you say, eyeing him incredulously. You take a sip. “They didn't bug your apartment, did they?”
“I don't think they care that much.”
“There, there.” You pat his arm. “One day they'll care enough about you to spy on you.”
You're both grinning. You could have been laughing but the implications hold you back. The silence that follows leaves room for you to change the subject.
“Something weird’s going on and…I can't talk to you about it.”
Reeve stares at his drink. Then turns his gaze to you. His expression is uncharacteristically steely. You can't see anything behind it. It reminds you of Rufus and your heart sinks a little.
Suddenly, he drops the expression like it's a weight he's been carrying. For years. His drooped features age him ten years. He puts the glass to his cheek for a moment, looking truly pained. Except the drink you're both having isn't chilled.
“It wouldn't be the only secret in that building,” he finally says.
That should launch you into a series of thoughts, except your phone interrupts by ringing.
You sigh. “What now?”
You have to lean back to drag your phone out of your pants pocket. ‘Rufus Shinra’ is the text in the centre of the display. You should be answering immediately but now there's something mentally blocking you. Several somethings. The budget payouts are just the most glaring. Shinra, Inc. is a towering, hulking heap of dark secrets and moral-less acts by heartless individuals, if the rumours are to be believed. You've always disregarded those rumours and been afraid to look closer. Now, through that Public Safety budget, they're looking at you . Rufus might as well be sitting on top of that pile like a dragon guarding a pile of rotten treasure.
That's when you realize: you don't want to answer.

Something I'm excited about with regards to finishing fight / flight is that now I can finally post a new batch of images to Pixiv! Not just fight / flight, but also other illustrations I finished over the period of time and/or forgot to previously post to the North Bound series there. I really wanted to do one last illustration of these three to close it off.
I usually wait a day, several days before posting art/comics to other platforms. Partly to spread out the update spam, partly to try to increase visibility, but mostly because 9 times out of 10 if I post things too fast I almost immediately discover some silly mistakes and then I'm crying inside because I'm repeatedly editing, reposting, finding another mistake, repeat etc... and/or I can't edit a post on some platforms and have to delete it all and start over. So I try to pace myself a bit, giving myself a little distance and opportunity to be more aware and mindful. (Sometimes it works. Sometimes I'm like, who cares, no one will notice except me, and move on with my life.)
It's always hard to assess your own work objectively. Projects like North Bound are particularly interesting because of the funny elasticity of time that you have with all the different pieces of it. That some ideas are so old and you're finally getting to them after all these months/years or other people are finally seeing them when you've already long moved on to something else. That different things are at varying stages of conception and sketching and refining and finishing, and so on. Webcomic creators are very familiar with the concept of "webcomic time". I think anyone who works in a field where there's a lag between the initial conceptualization of something and the actual publishing/launching it out into the world know what I mean. Webcomic time maybe even more so because the barriers to entry for webcomics can be wonderfully low and webcomic creators often do SO MUCH in the production so lots of people get to commiserate in this funny space/feeling together. To be honest I think I feel it with North Bound even more than I ever felt it with Now Recharging. The latter I worked on in a relatively regular fashion to hit specific posting schedules, while North Bound really is whenever I can squeeze in the time and motivation and also problem-solve narrative issues.
Looking back, Mirror Most Dark (completed 2017), I Heard A Cicada Cry (completed 2020), Survive (2021) and fight / flight (2024) (see them all here) form a four story set as "this is North Bound Hokushin's formative time before he meets Raizen". But what I really like is that they feel pretty self-contained - more like "this is an interesting little supernatural historical fiction-y series of stories". (Enough so that I actually woke up one night thinking, "Hey, this set of stories would actually make a pretty robust printed book! The 3 comic stories alone come to 108 pages! I wonder how many pages Mirror Most Dark would come to if I re-laid it out as a printed illustrated story... I'd have to redraw the illustrations in black and white to be able to print it more cost-effectively and match the style of the comic stories..." and then I was like no, you already have enough things to work on, and you don't need another box of books sitting in your closet for the next 10+ years.)
Working on these helps me really appreciate the art and craft of storytelling and building out/fleshing out a character, and also pushes me to try so many things I otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to. Mirror Most Dark, the oldest work in this group, still holds up not too badly (though there are a lot of errors and issues, and many things I would change if I were attempting it today...), and some panels and sequences I've been very proud of throughout the stories. When I reread them I do always see little things I'd like to fix, but overall... I made them, I learned from them, they exist, and it was all a very worthwhile experience!

Speedrun Workshop Postmortem
I wanted to make a more detailed postmortem as I cleaned the project files up but I'll keep it simple today… If I take any longer, I'm sure to give up on it. (The year is ending so there's a lot of prep/wrap-up going on in other areas I'm responsible for. 🙃)
What I'll cover:
What was the project about? It's goals? It's products?
How did I approach it?
How did things change and why?
What did I like most of what I completed?
What did I wish I could complete?
What did I learn? (A LOT. But maybe make a more definitive list.)
What would be my tips/advice for next time?
(Project deliverables are up on GitHub.)
The One Day Workshop
I only vaguely remember what spurred the project and apparently don't have any journal entries for it either… so here's the gist of it!
My sister worked with City of Las Vegas/Strong Future to help teach some Office 365 basics. In July, she decided to start a small tech biz (now defunct) that offered more technical training. If I remember correctly, she asked if there was anything I'd like to offer, so I figured I could cover programming, 3D art, and game development. (I really just wanted an excuse to play with the things I liked lol.) The team at Strong Future took an interest in hosting the game development class, but they only had a small budget for it at the time. So we decided to host a workshop for middle and high school students on Nevada Day.
The idea was to introduce students to the process of game development as well as some careers and resources. Since the workshop would only last 5 hours, the students would follow along with the recreation of an arcade-like game. I originally wanted to require students have some experience with code since we'd be jumping right into a project. We decided to leave it open to those without it, though. I figured I could do a quick intro to scripting and wouldn't sweat it too much since students could either type-along or drag-and-drop the files.
The workshop had an additional constraint: the computers in the lab wouldn't be able to install any additional software, so I'd have to use a portable or web-based game engine. I've long held onto a list of game engines and dev resources, so finding one wasn't an issue. What was interesting, though, was seeing how some of them have changed over the years… Godot Engine was the first one that came to mind and the one I was sure I was going to go with, but I took a look at my old list anyway. Cocos2D was my second choice since I'd be able to use JavaScript and I was considering it for a future web project, but it required more setup and research than I was interested in bothering with. (The modern Cocos editor requires an install.) Defold, like Godot, doesn't require an install but I didn't want to write in Lua. (Read: I didn't want to relearn how to write Lua. I only have three months.) Game Maker, Construct, GameSalad, and GDevelop were some others I considered for their web versions and/or visual programming features, but I didn't want to force the students to sign up for anything.
So Godot it was. 😎 Long Live Open-Source.
We also named the workshop "Speedrun" some weeks later.
Expectation
The workshop needed three things: a prototype to remake, some slides, and a collection of resources the students could use and refer to later. I was also advised to create a printed handout students could follow along with.
There would also be 20 students at most.
I wanted to break down the five hours as such:
1 hour talking about the industry, careers, and development concepts
3 hours walking through the prototype
1 hour letting the students tinker and build their own levels
(I wrote a couple of different outlines with timestamps closer to the end of the project, too.)
I wanted to teach the students game dev was all about problem solving (and IID.) I'd pose a question or scenario, then walk them through the implementation. Once we built the base game, the students could use the extra resources to add to it however they pleased.
I also split up the 3 months of development time of this project:
1 month to get up to speed with Godot 4 and create a game prototype
1 month to polish the prototype and write up the written materials
1 month to polish the materials, practice the presentation, and prepare for the workshop day
Reality
So I ended taking two months trying to prototype. I briefly talked about it in the "mini postmortem" I included in the class handbook… In short: I tried out different game ideas to see what I could actually implement by the end of the first month. The second month rolled around so I started moving the desired game mechanics to a clean file… just for them to start falling apart. That's when I settled on just making a simple platformer. I used all of September and half of October putting the platformer prototype together, leaving two weeks to put the remaining documents together. Ended up skipping the handout, since I couldn't decide what to put on it… I had a couple different versions of the to-do lists I used to track progress of the game that I could use, but I wasn't sure just how much detail should be included for each task to actually be useful. I didn't complete the handbook in time for class either, so I spent an extra two-three days writing that up…
Dragging and dropping the scripts and resource files from the prototype came in super handy. Because, contrary to my expectation, 4 hours was not enough time to even get past the setup of the player character and tile map. I did not account for students who might not have had any experience with editors of any sort (and forgot to give them an actual tour of the engine. OTL) It wasn't the perfect presentation of "game dev as problem-solving" I hoped for… it was a scramble of remembering what to click and do next. I think the problem-solving sentiment still floats around in the docs and presentation… somewhat. But if there's anything I regret, it's that failure to effectively lead the students through the recreation of the prototype game. We were all pretty exhausted by the end. They said they learned a lot but I hope it didn't crush their interests in building games. 😭
I did spend about an hour and a half covering the industry and such (to my surprise. I wasn't sure I was going to have enough to say, but alas… we did. And it was just a debrief of the topics themselves.) I was also lucky that the students who came in later showed up at opportune times, when it was easy to get them up to speed.
I didn't complete the prototype, but we didn't get very far with the game in-class, either. Guess there's a bit of grace there… I was so worried I end up with a class full of students who were already so comfortable building games in the virtual worlds they hang out in. (But I only had one student who was actually enrolled in a game development program and he was just starting out. All of the students were.)
Reflections
All of that said… I think seeing the reality of how this went down was enlightening. When I get ideas they tend to be overly idyllic and lofty, so it was good to see the gritty, incomplete, and even a little ugly side of this. It was a nice reminder of how much effort goes into creating something that's really good. I mean… the burnout I got after rushing to get this together was 0/10… but the respect I gained for the craft went up 1000%. And seeing how much is available online: from support groups to free tools, the future of game dev will always be bright and exciting.
Part of my screw-up with the approach to teach the development part could have been alleviated if I knew we'd only tackle such a small scope in that time… I obviously couldn't have known how much we'd get through, but a back-up plan beyond "use the premade resources to speed things up" might have been useful in this case. Maybe I could have an alternate "lesson route" where I scaled back most of our goal.
Then again… I probably would've known this ahead of time if I actually practiced the full presentation with someone, rather than the dry run I did alone. 🤔 (One of those expectation vs. reality things.)
Favorite Things
I remember making my first digital game in Flash (though I have this sneaking suspicion there was something I used before it?) Godot's scene-structure was very reminiscent of it. I also liked that it meant you could structure you game basically as the way you see it, making it easy for students to conceptualize.
I also love that you can make tools for the engine using the same language you do to write gameplay code. The coin tool is probably my favorite thing, even though it's incomplete.
Wishes
I'd actually like to figure out what's going on with the double jump animation (which was working at first.) The player can double jump, the conditional block holding the animation just doesn't fire. (I think. I'd have to check the code again.)
It'd also be cool to get the coin tool to work properly in-editor.
Lessons Learned
You won't be able to fit absolutely everything into a project and you probably shouldn't try. 😆 Don't let your brain lie and say you can. Dipping into the longer list of "Nice to Haves" after finishing the "Must Haves" feels nicer than having a long list of "These things were supposed to be in the game--"
Conclusion
I'm gonna be 100% honest, I'm not sure I'd try to build a platformer on my own again. Maybe something closer to a visual novel, sure, but anything more than that? I'd probably enlist the help of some friends. (Especially a gameplay programmer. I'll stick to tools…🫠)
It's a stark position from the one I held as a teen building (fragments of) games… maybe it was the rush to get something together and the burnout that followed. Maybe it was the fact I was building something outside of my initial intention, so I didn't have the same "emotional attachment" I would for something more personal. I do primarily think it was the time constraint and the pressure to make something that I thought would be satisfactory for the students to start with. Sure, I can perform under pressure, but I can't say I do better work under it. And frankly, the pressure is only more bearable with a team, which I didn't have lol.
However, the most important thing is that I completed enough of what was required for this endeavor that I could see it as a success. It's not a smashing or career-changing one, but it's just big enough to be a meaningful experience. (For me and for the handful of students who made it.)
#long post#game dev#yee.txt#if there are typos and stuff pls forgive meeeee#i'm dropping this here so i can go finish chores and stuff ;;;;

I've seen this for a very long time and I smile everytime because yes, it is fun because it is real.
However... do you know why is it real?
*cracks her knuckles while dusting Ye Old Knowledge of Advertising in her brain*
Short version:
At least when I was in College 12 years ago, it was a fact (one studied and taught) that men and women* shop differently.
Men tend to be more self-indulgent and literally buy anything that will make them feel wanted/horny/powerful. They pretty much live in a fantasy-land created by Advertisers and their own macho-brain.
Women are more practical, we live on this very real earth and we are used (by society's pressure) to care about Home Economics more. If we buy something we expect to have a product that is in a good price and will do what promises to do. We don't care that much about the concept of a product but the reality behind it.
*I'm not alienating the Queer community, I honestly do not know how their impact is measured or taught at this moment in College (as I said my formation was 12 years ago, in Argentina, were the LGBTQ+ community at the time wasn't thought of regardless of its size -maybe because my teachers were 50+ at the time-. My guess is that these 2 concepts still apply and probably align more with the "female" mindset of "I better get my money's worth for it" but thats a blind guess on my end). For simplicity's sake I'll keep talking about men and women.
Disclaimer: by no means I am saying that women will never be self-indulgent. But it is a fact that we usually put other's needs before our own, especially a mom (who would be buying things for the entire household and not just for herself).
First things first: How are Ads made?
Think of it as an assembly line.
You have the Company that has created a product but they need people to buy it. So they go to an Ad Agency.
In there they'll met the Accounts Team. The Company shares the information needed on a Brief and Accounts does the Briefing (analizing the info and creates an audience for that product).
This new Brief will go to the Media Team that, based off the audience, will think of the better outlets to buy Ad spaces.
Once everything is planned out it is time for the Creativity Team to take over and create the Ads needed. (After the creation the Company returns and if they like the ideas presented then the Production Team takes over and shoots the commercials/takes pictures and prints, edit and all that jazz).
Of course this is an oversimplification, processes takes time and if it is anything similar to my experience in College, many nervous breakdowns.
Get to know your audience
The most important part of the process is to create an audience and to do so we usually have two sets of information.
Hard Info (to give it a name): age, gender, social status, degree/studies, geographical location, income (if applies).
Soft info (idem): ideology, what music/movies/tv/books they like, food and brands they already consume, sports they play/like... pretty much anything that helps to identify a type of person that will buy whatever product we are presented with.
There isn't just one audience, there can be 2, 3, 4... you name it. The easiest example to show you that is a toy commercial: of course it is aimed at kids but it is also aimed at their parents (mostly moms).
Send in the Psychologists!
One of the reasons why I decided to walk away from my career was that we are the Psychologists Gone Bad. You know how any kind of Counselor or Therapist is not allowed to meddle and is just supposed to guide you so you can find the answer yourself? Well... we will tell you that whatever issue you have will be solved with X.
"He DOESN'T look happy..." 🤦🏻♀️
In order to do so we not just analize the hypotetical audience but also use some tools like the Mirror Stage
TL;DR babies usually think themselves as a part of a whole (a part of their mom or the same unit as other kids/babies -reason why if one cries everyone else cries-) until they realize that they are a single individual after discovering themselves in a mirror. Thing is that a mirror shows us just a part of ourselves (you can't have a 360° image so you only see the front or the back or the side) and that is where Advertising jumps in and replaces the mirror.
Advertising is not about selling a product (that depends on the stores and the Company that makes it) we sell an idea... a concept... a lifestyle.
Other main tools that probably you know well are the Color Theory and Significant/Signifier and all of this is used to create the "perfect" Ad for the audience.
Quick thought before continuing: According to my Psychology teacher there is no Subliminal Advertising because an Ad needs to be perceived to work and in the moment the Ad is noticed it stops being Subliminal. What you can find are inside jokes or Easter Eggs among creatives, nothing else.
SEX!
Now that I have your attention, read my blog...
Everybody knows that "sex sells" and sadly it is true. However it doesn't necesarily means that all Ads should present an orgy to be noticed... sometimes a hint of an idea is all it takes. But of course it doesn't work for everyone (Ace speaking here).
There is a cleaning products brand called Mr. Muscle (Mr. Músculo in Argentina) that used to look like this back in the '90s
The concept was that there was no need for you to be physically strong because the product itself was strong enough to get rid of the grime.
And now he looks like this because is a lot easier on the eyes...
My Marketing teacher pointed at us that when the character runs towards the camera at the end of the Ad you have a few seconds (less than that, actually) when his crotch fills the screen and now I can't unsee it.
"I am not that dumb, you can't make me buy something with all those tricks"
Oh, my sweet summer child, you probably already have.
Even if these tools are the most common, Advertising relies A LOT on Emotional Manipulation and nobody can escape it.
Once you know what triggers an emotional response on your audience, you got them.
Maybe you grew up with parents/family that always had X coffee for breakfast, or Y cookies remind you of your time in school, or Z soap always left a nice feeling on your skin... we are connected to brands either by first-hand experiences or we inherited them from our family or friends. This is what brands look for, a captive audience that will always buy them (until they experience something else or the company changes the product and "is not the same" lowering sales).
So how do brands compete with each other to either steal customers or get new ones? Through ideals and concepts shown in Ads.
A concept is the first thing a Creative (like me) has to come up with because it will reing everything that we will do for that product. It can be either a single word or a short sentence (that might become the slogan). Creatives beware, it is not easy to find it but once you do you're unstoppable.
This Concept is the door to the Fantasy.
Bursting bubbles
Sorry... I had to... I love Labyrinth
As I said in the short version of this... essay?... men and women perceive and buy things in different ways.
Mom worked in Walmart for 27 years (I believe) and during her time as cashier she noticed this as well.
Men usually buy the exclusive wines, exported cheese, fancy lotions probably because they think "I work hard, I deserve it" while women always look at the price first and then buy it because "you can't allow yourself to spend this amount in something like this". Of course I'm speaking of working-class people, those who are not poor but are not rich either.
It has being said before that men are more visual than women (reason why p*rn is usually aimed at men regardless of who is it really meant for) and they have a delusion of grandiosity that comes of centuries of being on top of the world (I'm so done with this word, but yes... due to Patriarchy). So they already think that are quite a catch for all women so what Advertising does is pump-up that fantasy. If you buy A, smell like B, use C jeans and have D women will flock towards you.
One of the examples we were given was of a female lingerie ad. Usually a girl wearing whatever ensamble in a bed or in a sugestive position. Is clothing for women, will (most likely be) on a women's magazine but it is an ad for men. Because the husband/partner will buy it (or give her hints about it) because he thinks that his wife/partner will look just like the Ad, and even if she doesn't he will remember the model.
What about the counterpart? So a male underwear ad. It will show a six-pack guy in nothing but briefs and a dominant position. Yes, it is eye-candy for women and it is also a fantasy for men that are absolutely convinced that they will look just as good as the model (so it is not an ideal to achieve... they are convinced they are irresistible). The men will just buy it because that image is who they are: powerful, manly, sexy, you name it. But a woman... will see if it is of good quality, if it streches enough, how can it be washed, and so on... and maybe won't even buy it.
This is not a new phenomena nor necessarily attached to Misoginy. My aunt was reading Ernesto Sábato the other day and read me a fragment of an essay where he also speaks about the difference between the male and female mind. His angle was something like "there are not female philosophers because women will always care more about what they can see and touch, they don't waste time in assumptions".
Again, this doesn't mean that all women are like this, it is a generalization, but it has been seen coming over and over again for enough time to make it the rule of thumb.
Yes, of course, Ads do affect women as well because unlike men, women do see them as an aspiration "I have to be thinner/younger/blonder/etc" to be attractive... but is not the Ad that determines who is attractive or not, is the men. As I said before, men are more visual than women, they "buy" the images and look for them in their surroundings making women put on an effort to be preceived desirable by them.
Small parenthesis before you get the torches. I am Aroace, straight. My life does not depend on whether I can "get a man" or not, I was taught to be independent. So no, I do not care if I look "cute" for a guy but when you sit down and analize everything that we women have available (clothing, make-up, hairstyles) and why is it popular among us is most likely because it fullfills a man's fantasy. Eyeliner to make our eyes look bigger, lipstick and blush are born out of the physical signs of a woman's orgasm; high heels to make the but bigger; bras with any kind of wire or padding to make boobs bigger... just look at anything and you'll see it. Yes, some women enjoy those things but eventually the questions "are you doing this for you? Why do you like it? And why?" will appear and it will lead to a big journey of self discovery and yes, most likely will finish with the realization that we didn't have much of a choice. Everything that we can buy to use in ourselves will respond to someone's fantasy of how someone should look like. There is no escape. Sorry.
Not all men
Mmmm... debatable.
I mean, yes, there are men that are not as basic... although it is a basic instinct.
We (humans) are still animals, we evolved but some wild instincts still remain. Our education will limit our reaction to certain triggers but it doesn't mean that we won't feel anything deep down because of them.
Advertising just takes advantage of it.
Welcome to the jungle, baby.

Exploring the World of Bedding: Trends and Innovations
In the evolving landscape of home decor, the bedroom has transformed from a purely functional space into a personal retreat where comfort meets style. At the heart of this sanctuary lies one of its most essential elements: bedding. In recent years, bedding design has seen remarkable innovation and creativity, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality. Let’s delve into some of the latest trends and advancements that are redefining the way we experience rest and relaxation.
1. Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Bedding
Sustainability is no longer just a buzzword—it has become a fundamental aspect of modern living. Eco-conscious consumers are increasingly opting for bedding sets made from organic materials such as bamboo, organic cotton, and Tencel. These materials not only reduce the environmental impact but also offer superior breathability and comfort. Bedding covers crafted from recycled fabrics are also gaining traction, proving that luxury and responsibility can go hand in hand.
2. Smart Bedding for a Better Sleep Experience
Technology has entered the realm of bedding design, bringing with it smart features designed to enhance sleep quality. From temperature-regulating sheets to bedding sets integrated with sensors that monitor sleep patterns, the future of sleep is now at our fingertips. Weighted blankets, which help reduce anxiety and improve sleep, are another innovative product finding their way into more homes.
3. Customizable and Mix-and-Match Bedding
Personalization has become a key trend in bedding design. Homeowners are moving away from standard matching sets and embracing the mix-and-match concept. This approach allows individuals to pair different patterns, textures, and colors to create a unique look that reflects their personal style. Bedding covers with reversible designs further add versatility, offering two looks in one.
4. Bold Colors and Patterns
Neutral tones may always have their place in bedding design, but bold colors and striking patterns are making a strong comeback. Vibrant hues such as emerald green, deep navy, and mustard yellow are being used to add character to bedrooms. Geometric prints, floral motifs, and abstract designs are some of the patterns dominating the market. Choosing a bedding set with a statement-making design can transform a simple room into a dynamic and visually appealing space.
5. Luxury and Comfort Redefined
The demand for ultra-soft and luxurious fabrics continues to grow. High-thread-count cotton, silky sateen, and sumptuous velvet are just a few materials favored for their plush feel and elegant appearance. Innovations in fabric technology, such as moisture-wicking and hypoallergenic properties, are enhancing the overall sleep experience. Many consumers are now turning to bedding online stores to access a wider variety of premium products that cater to both comfort and style.
6. Multi-Season Bedding Solutions
Gone are the days of having separate bedding sets for each season. Today’s bedding innovations include all-season comforters and adaptive layers that provide the perfect balance of warmth and breathability. Modular bedding designs allow users to customize their sleep environment according to changing weather conditions, making them a practical and cost-effective choice.
Conclusion
The world of bedding design continues to evolve, blending creativity, technology, and sustainability to create products that elevate the sleep experience. Whether you prefer eco-friendly options, tech-savvy solutions, or bold patterns, the choices available today offer something for every taste and need. By exploring the latest trends and purchasing your next bedding set or bedding cover online, you can effortlessly transform your bedroom into a haven of comfort and style.

How Atal Tinkering Labs encourage girls to explore STEM
In a small town in India, 13-year-old Aisha proudly holds up her first 3D-printed prototype of a solar-powered fan. Her journey began at her school’s Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL), where she discovered her passion for engineering. Stories like Aisha’s are becoming increasingly common, thanks to the Indian government’s flagship initiative to nurture innovation among students. ATLs are not just fostering creativity and innovation but are also playing a pivotal role in encouraging girls to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) careers, a space where they have historically been underrepresented.
What Is Atal Tinkering Labs?
Atal Tinkering Labs are innovation hubs set up in schools across India under the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM). Equipped with state-of-the-art tools like 3D printers, robotics kits, and IoT devices, these labs provide students with hands-on learning experiences. The aim is to foster a culture of curiosity, problem-solving, and creativity—essential skills for thriving in a rapidly evolving world.
How ATLs Empower Girls in STEM
1. Providing Equal Access to Resources
ATLs are committed to inclusivity, ensuring that girls have equal opportunities to use their facilities. By giving them access to tools and technology often perceived as “male-dominated,” these labs help girls build confidence in their technical skills.
2. Encouraging Participation Through Mentorship
ATLs often invite women mentors and STEM professionals to inspire students. Seeing role models who look like them and have succeeded in STEM fields motivates girls to dream big and work towards their goals.
3. Hosting Gender-Specific Workshops and Challenges
Many ATLs host workshops and hackathons tailored specifically for girls. These programs create a safe space for girls to explore their ideas, collaborate, and innovate without fear of judgment.
4. Breaking Stereotypes Through Success Stories
ATLs regularly highlight the achievements of their girl students, showcasing their innovative projects on social media and in school events. These stories challenge societal norms and inspire other girls to join the movement.
5. Fostering a Supportive Community
By bringing together like-minded students, ATLs create a sense of community. Girls who might otherwise feel isolated in their interest in STEM find peers to share their passion and collaborate on projects.
Success Stories: Girls Leading the Way
From designing apps to solve local problems to building eco-friendly robots, girls in ATLs are making their mark. For instance:
Meera, a Class 10 student, developed a water-saving irrigation system using IoT, winning accolades at a national competition.
Ananya, inspired by her ATL experience, is now pursuing a degree in aerospace engineering and dreams of working at ISRO.
The Broader Impact
Encouraging girls in STEM through initiatives like ATLs has far-reaching implications. It helps bridge the gender gap in STEM careers, boosts economic growth, and fosters diverse perspectives in innovation. According to a 2021 UNESCO report, increasing female participation in STEM could significantly enhance global innovation and productivity.
Join the movement!
Parents, educators, and policymakers can all play a role in amplifying the impact of ATLs. Support your local ATL by volunteering, mentoring, or encouraging girls to participate. Together, we can create a future where every child, regardless of gender, has the opportunity to innovate and excel. Try a free class
Let’s inspire more girls like Aisha to dream, create, and lead in the world of STEM! Explore more.

The Art of Custom Sneakers
Why Custom Sneakers?
Custom sneakers are all about self-expression. Whether you’re a sneakerhead, a streetwear enthusiast, or simply someone who wants a unique pair of kicks, customizing your shoes allows you to add personal flair and creative vision to your footwear. People who opt for custom sneakers are often looking to stand out, showcase their personal style, or even send a message through their design choices. It’s a way of taking mass-produced items and turning them into one-of-a-kind art pieces.
From hand-painted designs to more elaborate alterations using materials like leather, fabric, or even 3D printing, custom sneakers can take many forms. The possibilities are truly endless. Artists and designers often find sneakers to be an excellent medium because of the versatility they provide, allowing for a wide range of customization techniques.
The Sneaker Design Process: From Concept to Creation
The design process is where the magic happens. Creating custom sneakers involves much more than simply adding colors or patterns to a blank pair of shoes. It’s a journey from concept to completion, where ideas are transformed into wearable art.
1. Conceptualization: Where Creativity Begins
The first step in the design process is conceptualizing your custom sneakers. Before diving into the artistic aspects, it’s essential to gather inspiration. What theme or style are you going for? Are you paying homage to a specific artist, pop culture figure, or abstract concept? This is where mood boards, sketches, and brainstorming come into play.
Conceptualization is crucial because it sets the foundation for your design. Whether you’re working on your own pair or creating a custom pair for someone else, ensure you have a clear vision of the final product. Consider elements like:
Color schemes: Will you stick with traditional colors or experiment with neon, metallics, or pastels?
Themes: Are you inspired by movies, music, abstract art, or personal experiences?
Patterns: Are you going for intricate details, geometric shapes, or freehand illustrations?
2. Choosing the Right Sneakers as Your Canvas
Choosing the right sneakers for your custom design is another crucial step. Not all sneakers are created equal, and some lend themselves better to customization than others. Leather sneakers are a popular choice for painting because they provide a smooth surface. Mesh sneakers, on the other hand, might be more challenging to work with but can still produce incredible results.
When selecting your canvas, you should also consider the structure of the shoe. Does it have enough space for the design you have in mind? Are there too many panels or overlays that could obstruct your artwork? Picking a blank sneaker that aligns with your design goals will make the customization process much smoother.
3. Execution: Transforming Your Ideas into Reality
Once you’ve conceptualized your design and chosen your sneakers, it’s time to bring your ideas to life. Depending on the type of customization, you’ll need specific tools and materials:
Painting: Acrylic paints, leather paints, or fabric paints (depending on the material of the sneaker), paintbrushes, and sealants to ensure your design lasts.
Stencils & masking tape: If your design involves clean lines or intricate details, stencils and masking tape can help you achieve professional results.
Dyeing: For certain materials like canvas, dyeing can be an effective way to customize sneakers.
Materials: Leather patches, embroidery threads, or custom laces can be used for more tactile customization.
4. Finishing Touches: Sealing and Protecting Your Custom Sneakers
After completing your design, you’ll want to ensure your custom sneakers last as long as possible. Applying a protective sealant or finishing spray will keep the colors vibrant and the design intact, even after repeated wear. Choose the appropriate sealant for the material of your sneaker—whether it’s leather, canvas, or mesh—to ensure a lasting finish.
Customization Ideas for Sneaker Lovers
If you’re looking for some inspiration to start customizing your own sneakers, here are some creative ideas:
Pop Culture Tributes: Pay homage to your favorite movies, music, or TV shows by incorporating recognizable characters, quotes, or symbols into your design.
Nature-Inspired Art: Take inspiration from the natural world by painting florals, animals, or landscapes onto your sneakers.
Graffiti and Street Art: If you love the urban aesthetic, consider adding graffiti-style art to your sneakers, complete with bold colors and dynamic shapes.
Minimalist Designs: For a more subtle approach, opt for minimalist designs. Think simple lines, soft gradients, or monochromatic color schemes.
How to Choose the Right Sneakers for Customization
Once you’ve got your design in mind, the next step is to choose the right sneakers for your project. Not all sneakers are created equally, and certain materials and structures are better suited for customization than others. Here’s how to select the ideal pair for your custom project.
1. Material Matters
The material of the sneakers plays a huge role in how easy they are to customize. Leather and canvas are the most popular materials for custom sneakers due to their durability and ease of use with paint and other artistic tools.
Leather Sneakers: These offer a smooth surface, making them perfect for painting and dyeing. The durability of leather means your design will likely last longer and maintain its vibrant appearance.
Canvas Sneakers: These are lightweight and highly versatile. Canvas sneakers are excellent for dyeing, painting, or even adding embroidery.
2. Structure and Design of the Sneakers
The structure of the sneakers is another important consideration. High-top sneakers provide more surface area for customization, making them great for intricate designs. Low-tops might offer less room for detail, but they’re excellent for minimalist or sleek designs.
High-tops: Ideal for bold, all-over designs that cover the entire surface of the shoe.
Low-tops: Better suited for simple, minimalist designs or customization in specific areas.
3. Comfort and Fit
It’s essential to choose sneakers that are not only easy to customize but also comfortable to wear. After all, your custom sneakers won’t see much use if they’re uncomfortable! Make sure to try on a few pairs and assess the fit before diving into the customization process.
4. Customization-Friendly Brands
Some sneaker brands are better suited for customization due to their simple designs and smooth surfaces. Popular choices include:
Nike Air Force 1: Known for its clean, simple design, the Nike Air Force 1 is a favorite among sneaker customizers.
Adidas Superstar: With its minimalistic structure, the Adidas Superstar provides an excellent blank canvas for a wide variety of designs.
Converse Chuck Taylor All Star: These iconic sneakers are a favorite for customizers, thanks to their canvas material and timeless silhouette.
Conclusion: Step Into Your Creative Potential with Custom Sneakers
Custom sneakers are more than just shoes—they’re an expression of who you are. Whether you’re paying tribute to your favorite movie or simply letting your artistic side shine, custom sneakers allow you to walk in your own unique style. By following the steps above, you can turn a blank pair of sneakers into a personal masterpiece that stands out from the crowd.
Remember to choose the right materials, select a design that speaks to you, and ensure the sneakers fit comfortably. Whether you’re new to sneaker customization or a seasoned pro, the possibilities are endless. Dive into the exciting world of custom sneakers and make each step a reflection of your creativity!

Guide to Buy Vinyl Records in Australia
Vinyl records have experienced a resurgence in recent years, captivating both seasoned audiophiles and newcomers alike. Whether you’re a longtime collector or a curious beginner, buying vinyl records in Australia can be an exciting journey filled with unique sounds, stunning artwork, and tangible memories. This guide will help you navigate the process of purchasing vinyl records, ensuring that you find the perfect additions to your collection.
Understanding the Appeal of Vinyl Records
Before diving into the purchasing process, it’s essential to understand what makes vinyl records so appealing. Unlike digital formats, vinyl offers a warmer, richer sound that many music lovers find more satisfying. The tactile experience of handling a physical record, coupled with the large album artwork, creates a connection that digital music cannot replicate. Moreover, the act of playing a vinyl record, from carefully placing it on a turntable to flipping the sides, adds a ritualistic quality to music listening that many find enjoyable.
Types of Vinyl Records
When buying vinyl records, you will encounter various types, each with its own characteristics. Here’s a quick overview:
LP (Long Play): The most common format, typically 12 inches in diameter, playing at 33 1/3 RPM. LPs usually contain multiple tracks, offering a complete listening experience.
EP (Extended Play): Generally 7 inches in diameter, EPs contain fewer tracks than LPs but more than singles. They are perfect for artists looking to showcase a few songs without committing to a full album.
Singles: These usually feature one main track and a B-side. Singles can be a great way to explore an artist’s music without investing in an entire album.
Picture Discs: A visually striking option, picture discs are vinyl records with images printed on them. While they can be collectible, the sound quality may vary, so it's best to check reviews.
Colored Vinyl: Available in various colors and styles, colored vinyl adds a unique visual element to your collection.
Where to Buy Vinyl Records in Australia
Finding the right source for vinyl records is crucial. Here are some options to consider:
1. Local Record Stores
Shopping at local record stores can be an incredible experience. These shops often carry a curated selection of new and used records, allowing you to browse and discover hidden gems. The staff can also offer recommendations based on your taste, making it a personalized shopping experience. Supporting local businesses helps keep the vinyl community thriving in your area.
2. Online Retailers
If you prefer the convenience of shopping from home, many online retailers specialize in vinyl records. Websites like Bandcamp, Discogs, and Amazon provide vast catalogs of both new and used vinyl. Make sure to check seller ratings and reviews to ensure you receive quality products.
3. Record Fairs and Swap Meets
Attending record fairs and swap meets is an excellent way to find rare records and connect with fellow collectors. These events often feature a wide range of vendors selling everything from mainstream albums to obscure finds. Plus, the atmosphere is usually vibrant and full of passionate music lovers.
4. Artist Websites and Merchandise Stores
Many artists sell their vinyl records directly through their websites or at live shows. Purchasing from an artist's store supports them directly and can sometimes include exclusive releases or signed copies. Keep an eye on your favorite artists’ social media pages for announcements about new vinyl releases.
Tips for Buying Vinyl Records
When it comes to buying vinyl records, there are a few tips to keep in mind to ensure you make the best choices:
1. Check the Condition
When purchasing used vinyl, inspect the record for scratches, scuffs, or warping. If possible, ask to listen to the record before buying. The cover should also be in good condition, as it adds value to the collection.
2. Know Your Genres
Having a clear idea of your preferred genres will make it easier to navigate stores or online catalogs. Whether you love rock, jazz, hip-hop, or classical, knowing what you enjoy will help you focus your search.
3. Set a Budget
Vinyl records can range significantly in price. Setting a budget will help you prioritize your purchases and avoid overspending. Keep in mind that new releases may be more expensive than used records.
4. Read Reviews and Recommendations
Before making a purchase, consider reading reviews or seeking recommendations from fellow vinyl enthusiasts. This can help you discover new artists or albums that align with your taste.
5. Join a Community
Connecting with other vinyl collectors can enhance your experience. Join online forums or social media groups to share your passion, ask questions, and receive advice from seasoned collectors.
Caring for Your Vinyl Records
Once you’ve acquired some vinyl records, proper care is essential to ensure their longevity. Here are some maintenance tips:
Store Records Upright: Keep your vinyl records stored vertically, like books on a shelf, to prevent warping.
Clean Your Records: Dust and dirt can accumulate on the surface, affecting sound quality. Use a carbon fiber brush or a dedicated vinyl cleaning solution and cloth to keep your records clean.
Use a Good Turntable: Invest in a quality turntable and needle to maximize your listening experience. A good setup will preserve sound quality and protect your records.
Handle with Care: Always handle records by the edges to avoid fingerprints on the grooves.
