Hi Derrin! Have you talked much about your experience with publishing and the business-y stuff like that before? If so,,, any chance you can drop a link/reblog the relevant post?
Oh I am not the right person to ask about that. You'd be better off asking someone like @thebibliosphere if you're looking to go into indie/self-publishing, or maybe someone like @dduane for traditional publishing.
The thing you gotta understand about me is that I got into this by accident and I fundamentally do not know or understand what I'm doing. It was never my intention to publish my stories as books, they were not written or designed to be books. I write web serials. My primary income stream is not book sales, it's patreon/ko-fi support. For my web serials.
My stories exist as ebooks and in print for one reason and one reason only -- the readers asked for them. People were copy-pasting them into documents to convert to read on their ereaders, and asking my permission to print and hand bind them for their bookshelves. I print them to meet a demand, not to make money -- I do make money as a writer, but as I said, it's through ko-fi and patreon supporters, which is a fundamentally different income stream that requires fundamentally different strategies. I don't know much about printing or distribution, or price setting or storefronts, or basic book marketing, because that's not my industry, it's something I'm taking advantage of to create a product that the people supporting me via other means happen to also, incidentally, want.
If you're looking to get into self publishing as an industry, you'll want to talk to someone who makes that their career. Not me, I'm just fucking around and I'd give you incredibly bad advice.

Check this bullshit out
Some of you might know that this is my personal blog. I also have a business blog for my art. It's not fandom art, so I don't talk about it or link it here. I just discovered that 479 of my images have been used to train AI. Most of the works are between 2009 and 2020, for some reason, and a LOT of them came off pinterest, some from redbubble indirectly, via ArtFire (which I don't think exists anymore, but would be the right time frame, so the Rb stuff is from using their thumbnails with watermark there, more recent stuff I've put on Rb after I closed my ArtFire storefront is not coming up. I used to use a watermarked image from Rb to point people towards prints if they preferred that over an original)
So I used this site
https://haveibeentrained.com/
Here's what you should do if you are worried about this.
Use that link and make a profile, it's free.
Type your name into the search feature (or whatever name you used in your image meta data or art web presence)
Wait --it will might take a few tries to get the list to populate, if it comes back saying it can't find anything, wait a few minutes and try again. Once it starts populating, let it finish, this could take a while. my 479 works took it about 5 minutes to load all the way and the option to opt out won't come up until the search is done. Right click on each image (or long press on mobile) and choose "add to opt-out"
Now, once you are done opting all these works out I strongly suggest you yoink all your shit down off of pinterest. And BLOCK pinterest shares on your art sites. (For me, pinterest was the largest offender)
Has the horse already bolted?
Yes, for these particular works. But this gives you a record of saying I do not and did not consent to this. Meaning: further down the road, if legal restitution happens, you have some proof.
After you upload new work, going forward, check back a few times, over the course of a month or so, and if the new work comes up, find out how by clicking on the image and following the source link. This will take you to the site that is feeding your stuff to the monster. If you have an account on that site, remove your content and close your profile.
This site checks for writing too. Make sure to check under your pen name for your writing too!
If you do NOT have an account on that site, it's time to whip out the old DMCA dance

Animerica Extra Volume 1 Issue 1: A Closer Look
Finally, finally finally I managed to get the first two volumes uploaded to the Internet Archive, which you can find here, and I really do recommend because of Tumblr image compression being kinda gross. Anyways, I wanted to take this opportunity to talk about the first issue of the magazine and what I really found interesting and cool!
First off is the advertisements that appear in the magazine. Considering the scope and popularity of the magazine, the "type" of companies that would advertise are somewhat different. I mean, AnimeVillage got the front cover ad. Not that they're a tiny company, but much like others in here, they're not a company that lasted incredibly long.
Still, what is incredibly interesting though is their website, which is still saved in the internet archive, though in a somewhat incomplete fashion, which you can find here. Anyways, getting to visit an old site like this is a lot of fun, mostly because of the personality that appears with it. Offensive and sharp color palettes, more than a few moving pieces, and a very blocky layout. Honestly, I think sites like this have a considerable amount more to offer in terms of heart and individuality than what modern web design has given us, but that's not the point. The point is that Animerica Extra provides people, specifically the community in this moment, with an experience from the past. I mean, AnimeVillage is from 1998, there's no way that the vast majority of anime or manga fans would even know about them as a company today.
Getting to the actual magazine itself though, there's just two things that I find interesting with the Table of Contents. Firstly, right at the bottom, just above the "Printed in Canada" statement, Viz offers a disclaimer (which you can't read here because of nasty Tumblr compression, so I'll transcribe it): "For the purposes of publication in English, the artwork in this publication is in reverse from the original Japanese Version".
Now, I don't have any OG manga volumes that were printed more like graphic novels, so I can't say for sure, but I find this disclaimer interesting. Either, a) this is a general disclaimer Viz gives about the difference between JP and English publication, or b) Viz is required to provide this disclaimer for the materials. Either way it's a very curious piece.
And then there's the "Vizit our World Wide Web Sites at www.viz.com...". Yes, Viz actually printed "Visit" as "Vizit" alongside "World Wide Web sites". Just such a blast from the past as to how the internet was viewed and interacted with.
And then there's the Yuu Watase feature from the first issue. I think it's something that doesn't immediately stick out to people in the modern day because hey, you just go to MAL or Manga-Updates and you can see everything that Watase's ever done like it's nothing.
But in the 80s that sort of accessibility was non-existent. I mean, like you'll see later on with the letters, people only found out about Animerica Extra through Animerica. It really highlights how valuable this sort of information was to the community during the era, because you simply just would not know anything about Yuu Watase without these pieces.
Similarly, you couldn't go and look up what a series was about on the internet, you only had word of mouth and direct interaction, so excerpts like these that give readers an idea of what is is they're about to read is incredibly important.
Just a quick aside here about advertisements. I know a lot of people will say, "but hey! There were TV ads during the 90s and 2000s that could be run for this stuff! Surely they could provide information and advertisement via that!", and I think the easiest answer is another question: can the modern day animanga industry manage that? Obviously not, no. The avenues that Viz could approach to advertise via were incredibly narrow, largely focused on anime specific storefronts or general comic stores, placing physical advertisement at the top of the pyramid, followed up by ads distributed via their tapes back in the day.
Anyways, back on track to the editorial for an interesting conversation! This one's very interesting to me for just one thing, really- the original sketch giveaway.
It happens today, rather frequently, but with caveats. It's not, "Hey we're running a giveaway so make sure to participate", it's "Hey we've got X mangaka appearing at a con so come for a chance to win their sketch!". The difference in the approach to the giveaway is entirely different. I don't know if I can really say that it's more accessible, but I think that it gives fans a greater opportunity to participate purely because it's cheaper, running on a far longer schedule (as the editorial mentions), and doesn't require in person attendance for the opportunity.
But to be fair, even those giveaways are only a recent thing as the animanga market's boomed. There was quite a long period of dead air in terms of this sort of activity, so I find it really interesting how the landscape has changed in how these now corporations approach these aspects of interaction with their communities.
Also, here's a link to the archived version of the website in the advertisement on this page.
And this magazine really just keeps giving more and more crazy information. This News Notes panel really surprised me. Yes, it's got a lot of plain information like upcoming or finishing anime, but most interesting is the information that the left column provides.
They talk about the mangaka of Steam Detectives appearing at San Diego Comic Con, and not only that, but bringing some early footage of the anime. I mean, that sort of thing has only just begun happening again in the last few years.
It's crazy to see how advanced and engaged Viz was back in the day with the industry overseas. Not that they aren't today, but that the curtain's been pulled across so we no longer get stuff like this in English.
Speaking of things like that, because of the disappearance of things like this, we don't get to see interaction between individuals and the companies. The letters section in this first volume is so interesting because of the era it comes from. The accessibility of information is immediately addressed with the first letter that talks about them finding out about Animerica Extra via the mainline Animerica. Then there's the very talented letter sending that sewed a decorative pillow for their friend. But I think my personal favorite is the nonsensical letter penned by Jonkani.
These magazines are just a gold mine of history and culture pertaining to the North American animanga industry and community, that I really think is important to be able to experience and understand as it contextualizes where this slice of entertainment lies in the modern day.
And this just the first issue of the first volume, there's still 73 more to go that provide all sorts of wonderful and curious information and interactions. Incredibly happy to be able to provide this to the community, but also very hopeful that being vocal with this will both make people more aware of a history that is "ours", and inspire those that have pieces of history like this to archive them.

So, I recently got diagnosed, but absolutely nothing has changed-like my parents now gaslight me even more, get annoyed when I have sensory overload, get mad if I can't sit still, and tell me I shouldn't need "special things" like basic accommodations(fidgets, extra time, etc). I've also tried meds and they didn't work. Any tips?
Sent April 22, 2022
This is a tough one. Parents are supposed to support us, not make everything harder!
I can’t give you any really good tips without more information on what specifically you’re struggling with, but I’m going to try and at least offer some suggestions for the issues you mentioned here. If you can let me know what in particular is causing you problems and how you’ve tried to deal so far, I am happy to offer what help I can.
Diagnosis
Congratulations on getting diagnosed! It can be a difficult fight, but you persevered and here you are. Welcome to the community; I hope we are all able to support you well.
Parents
Sometimes people think that a diagnosis gives us the problems, but sometimes they think naming the disorder eliminates them. It’s so weird; like, no, having the right label just tells me where to look for solutions that will *actually* help! I don’t know if that’s what’s going on with your parents, obviously, but it is a possibility.
I don’t know what kind of relationship you have with your parents, but it sounds like they aren’t really very safe for you. That really sucks. I don’t know how old you are, but I’m going to assume you are a minor. Do you have any adults in your life who are safe, who you can trust to support you?
Assuming that you have to continue living with your parents, I’ll offer a few suggestions for how to talk to them about the particular things you mentioned when I get to those things. For now, I just want to suggest that you approach them about the possibility of getting talk therapy/counselling. A good counsellor will be able to help you work out some of the things that are causing you difficulty in your relationship with your parents, and they aren’t allowed to discuss your sessions with your parents (or they shouldn’t be; do check their policies and the laws in your area to be sure).
Sensory Overload
Sensory processing stuff can be hard to manage because it’s all about how your brain handles things, so it’s invisible. If you can, I highly recommend taking note of what sends you into overload so that you can find ways to mitigate it. I have a sheet to help you figure this out up on the Actually ADHD web site (http://actuallyadhd.org), in the Resources section under Printables. I am working on turning all of my InfoSheets into fillable PDFs so that people don’t have to print them in order to use them.
Sitting Still
Sitting still can be really hard for us! It took me a while to realize that I am actually always moving some part of my body, and that is how I express hyperactivity. It’s not as blatant as my son’s hyperactivity; he is 7 years old and uses full-body movement to express it!
I don’t know what kind of options you have available to you, but you might look at getting a cushion that will let you sit mostly still while wiggling just a little bit. I’ll try to get an Amazon storefront set up this weekend and make sure to include this sort of thing in it.
If you’re finding that you’re mostly having trouble after a specific length of time—like, you can sit still for a while but then you get fidgety—try taking a bathroom break when you can’t sit still anymore. You don’t need to actually use the facilities, just go in and close the door, and then take some time to get a bunch of that energy out. (Tip: bring your phone and earphones in with you and dance to an awesome high-energy song.)
Another great thing that’s more proactive is to try and get regular exercise, especially cardio. Not only does this help your brain function better (not immediately; it’s more of a long-term investment thing), it helps get some of that energy out and gives you proprioceptive input (physical body sensations). Both of these can be contributing factors in physical hyperactivity.
Accommodations
As we all know, accommodations are most definitely not “special things”; they are necessary modifications to our environment and/or expectations that are based on the specific difficulties we have due to our disability. If you live in the US, appropriate accommodations are required to be provided at work and at school. (I’m pretty sure this is accurate; if anyone out there knows more than I do about the ADA, please feel free to chime in!)
I don’t think the ADA applies to your home life when you’re a minor (could be wrong!), but if you are in school and you do not have an IEP or a 504 plan, please talk to your school—either the counsellor or a trusted teacher—and ask for one. I have heard that a 504 plan is better for ADHDers; we do have some posts with that information here, too. Basically, if you need accommodations at school, you should have a plan in place and your teachers are legally required to follow that plan… and while your parents have to agree to the plan, they really need to be educated by your teachers on this since they obviously don’t care to learn on their own.
Medication
I’m so sorry that medication didn’t help. I want to check in about this briefly because there are a lot of misconceptions about medication and ADHD. So I’m going to address the most common ones here, just in case the information is helpful for you or for someone else reading this post.
Medication isn't going to make you not-ADHD. It just makes your ADHD easier to manage.
Medication usually has side effects; the main question is whether you're willing to put up with them.
There are a lot of different types of medication out there, so don't let anyone stop at just one. The odds are actually really good that there's something out there that will help.
I'm sorry this took so long to post; I started answering it AGES AGO and since it was nearly finished I figured I'd post it now.

“Hey, Sophie? What do you think about baking?”
There is no subtle way to go about doing this. White Day chocolates, as he had explained, were a display of love. Platonic or otherwise. And though he oft’ tried to rationalize it, that all she had felt probably lingered somewhere between those things, he knew his ears were far too hot to think his feelings were merely friendly.
But he couldn’t just up and give her the chocolates. It was no different from taunting her with ideas of other worlds, that he... unproudly did a little too often. He knew her, grounded as she may be, to be a restless sort. Always needing something to do. Not so dissimilar to him. But what confined her to this ran much deeper than he could ever know.
Most he could do was lead her into the kitchen, show her a recipe, and cast his gaze to the floor when blurting out, “Can... you help me with these?” And the fine print would indicate it. White Day Chocolate.
Well it’s like Valentine’s day. But... where I come from, it’s on two days, a month apart. White Day is when the guys usually give something. Or whatever.
Or whatever. And now he’s standing in her kitchen asking her to help him make some, or whatever. “I want to make some with you.”
Because they’re for you! Say it, you fool!!!
[ White Day ask :) ]
The call of spring rings. From their slumber, the once-dormant tulips, daffodils, and a myriad of wildflowers sprout from the soil, dappling the Folding Valley. As the sun's warmth reaches down and drapes across the peaks, it revives their once-chilled petals and stems, casting a golden wash over the greening canvas of Ingary's most northern landscape.
On the outskirts of Market Chipping, lingering snow receding reveals damp and fertile soil, signaling the start of the tilling seasons. Eager farmers, readied with their tools and accompanied by sturdy oxen, begin preparations, envisioning the bountiful harvest ahead. With barn doors flung open, livestock revels in their verdant pastures, basking underneath the sun without worrying about the frost threatening their hooves, webbed feet, or paws.
Market Chipping, too, blossomed in the new season. The once-empty farmer's market was slowly repopulating, with regular faces reopening their stalls. Opened windows invite the fresh spring breeze to waft in, carrying the blooming flowers from the valley. Children, no longer burdened by heavy garments, dash through the streets, their laughter and energy contrasting the measured and scheduled paces of the adults around them. The road was loud with life: some townsfolk leisurely enjoying their day, others bustled to their places of work, and still more jogging to their next endeavor. The diligent carries tools -- paintbrushes, buckets, and the like. For this season, spring cleaning also includes spring refreshing! Storefronts receive fresh coats of paint, and window boxes check and replace the old soil and plants with new colorful blossoms.
In a home tucked away in Market Chipping, the Hatter's cramped house is also shedding its winter coat. The hearth in the entrance room of the home, burning brightly throughout the earlier months with demands of logs, now only has a milder glow, quieter and less demanding. The heavy drapes were pulled back, streaks of once-rare sunlight pooling into the abode's bedrooms, kitchen, and living space. Even on the small round table that makes up the dining space, freshly picked daffodils are in vases, pale yellow petals swaying ever-so-slightly from a cracked window in the kitchen, the one small window above the sink that overlooks the Hatter's small patio.
Sophie Hatter, the eldest daughter, is folding a large, heavy quilt that warmed the foyer's couch throughout long and quiet winter nights. When Martha and Lettie were much younger, Sophie, as the eldest sister, took to her sewing needles and worked throughout the rest of the seasons to prepare for the girls shivering and crawling into her bed to get through the frigid nights. As the two got older, the quilt was in the supply closet or folded over the couch's back-support cushions.
Every square of the quilt holds a different story, from a first-failed snowflake, pine trees, frosty leaves, and several simple solid colors, all of which have faded with time. Methodically, Sophie's hands smooth out each section, her index finger tracing the pattern, drawing her lips into her mouth.
How much time has passed...
"Thank you for your services," Sophie sighs with a soft smile. She folds the last corner of the quilt and holds it over her forearm.
A gentle voice, filled with hesitation, meets Sophie's ears. Typically, personal inquiries would be met with a slight frown and some reticence on her part. However, today, the pervasive nostalgia averts that reaction.
Riku, the man who hailed and traveled from the stars and from a place she could only dream of visiting, glances towards her. His eyes dart away when he realizes her undivided attention is on him.
"Ah.." Sophie muses. Inspecting the quilt, she pinches one corner and, with delicate motion, rids of any wrinkles with a quick wrist flick. "Baking is a pastime I've enjoyed since childhood. However," she chuckles softly, "you might be asking the wrong Hatter."
"You might have seen her in Cersari's anytime you've been in town, Mister Riku.--" Speaking obliquely, the eldest sister is reminded of her younger sister's compromising situation. The baking genius is now at the bakery, but she was not assigned to take an apprenticeship there!
Ah, the convoluted tale of Martha and Lettie switching places remains a secret. Only Sophie is aware of this circumstance and was sworn to secrecy.
Even Mother has yet to take notice. In complete oblivious bliss. However, when has she seen what her daughters wanted? When has she actually noticed them..?
"Although," she continues, a warmer genuine smile emerging, her eyes squinting. "Take that not as an indication that I've ceased baking. Any moment I can, I will esteem my siblings."
As Riku shifts, moving further into the house, Sophie's attention ricochets to him. Setting the quilt aside, she whispers, "Mister Riku," before pursuing after him.
A man of few words and many actions, his movement was nothing to be ignored! They both quietly weave through and enter the kitchen.
"If you are parched, you could simply ask for a drink," Sophie remarks with a raised eyebrow. With her hands resting on her hips, she observes Riku rummaging through his pockets.
He carefully flattens the crumpled paper with his black-gloved hands before extending it towards her. Avoiding her gaze, he silently offers it for her perusal. Sophie gently takes a corner, steadying the paper as she scans the written words.
"White Day," the name lingers on her lips, query implied, as her eyes heavy on the paper. A recent memory surfaces: the woman born far from the ocean yet seemingly carries sea salt in her spirit; the rare individual capable of brightening the often solemn countenance of the key bearer; the one back in Riku's home.
"Is that what it is?" She murmurs. "On Valentine's Day, one presents something to their beloved. If these days are interconnected, is White Day a kind of 'reciprocating or response day for men who received something on Valentine's Day?" She blinks. "Assuming that you specify 'guys,' as you put it, giving something on this day means that women initiate the gesture on Valentine's Day."
An uncharacteristically loud inhale from the nostrils comes from Sophie upon hearing Riku's simple request. It felt as 'simple' as turning felt back into its original wool form. It is as straightforward as crafting a tapestry without the aid of a loom. Or as effortless as hand-spinning raw cotton straight from the plant.
How would she prevail in hiding the sharp prickling in her chest? It burns like vile, burning the insides of her throat. She gazes around the vacant kitchen, seeking a semblance of grounding. The burgeoning dread, she swallows it back; it is one incomprehensible from the point of origin, but all at the same time, it feels too intimate.
"Of course, Mister Riku," each word is drawn out. When Sophie's eyes find his cerulean eyes, they are the deepest sea she has ever seen. Sophie's gaze returns to the cerulean eyes, the deepest sea she has ever seen. Perhaps that was the cruel irony: a girl from the Folding Valley, so removed from the sea, could never make it there. Too far, never meant to be.
"I would do anything for you," her voice wavers, barely above a whisper. Her breath hitches, and she quickly adds to recover: "To help you bake the chocolates!"
Spinning on her heels, she hurriedly rifles through drawers for an apron. "After all, it would be unwise to leave things unanswered, especially with how much you must've received as someone of your...popularity." Yet, beneath her words, there remains that stinging in her throat. A shade of unmistakable green.

August Artist Blog (more under the cut)
For August I tried to make a vlog, not only to document my month making art, but also my attempts to overhaul my approach to making and sell art. However, I’m not experienced at making vlogs, nor do I have a quiet, dedicated space to record voiceovers. But I did post a video of me doing marker work. We’ll get to that in a bit.
Introduction
First off, in case you’re new here, my name’s Antonio Tyler. I’m a webcomic creator and illustrator. I’ve been making art most my life, but started drawing comics in 2003 with my first webcomic, Synaptic Misfiring.
I drew variations of Synaptic Misfiring for a few years, got married, had kids, worked two jobs (because California). Over the last 5 years, though, I’ve been focusing more on illustration and selling products, though o want to get back into webcomics. I did a 3 episode Webtoon called Only Human, but I haven’t done a comic in a few years now.
Mobile Studio Setup
I don’t have a dedicated studio. I know a lot of artists do. But it’s not impossible to have a setup that is portable.
I use a 4th generation iPad Air with 64GB and a 2nd generation Apple Pencil. I use IbisPaint X, and use the paid version. I find it’s most ideal for making comics. And it’s constantly updated. New features are added all the time.
I have an assortment of tonal markers by Tombow, and a couple of Copics.
I always carry my iPad with me, so I can work on sketches or finished art whenever or wherever. You can access IbisPaint’s cloud storage via internet if needed, but it also stores files locally. It’s great being able to draw on a lunch break, a bus ride, or at the library. Occasionally I carry a sketchbook and pens with me if I intend to do traditional art.
Rethinking websites and storefronts
A couple months back I looked into doing a website on a number of platforms, such as Wix, Squarespace, etc. While a lot of them are pretty affordable, and have good options, I don’t really use my website much. It’s mostly a hub for all my other sites and profiles.
Tumblr, having been purchased by the Wordpress folks awhile back, is really pushing itself as a website alternative, with their templates (which they always have had) and having direct sales of web address. I’m in the process of updating AntonioTyler.com while also keeping the functionality of a Tumblr page. Tumblr is notorious less functional as a mobile site or app. So choosing the right template has been a challenge.
One thing is making a Linktree/Beacons/Milkshake-style link page instead of just a text based link page. Including links to all my different store fronts.
Updating my storefronts happens to be another thing on my to do list. I have several, and they are all decentralized. I use several: Ko-fi, Threadless, INPRNT and BigCartel. Originally I was going to use BigCartel for my sole storefront, but issues with getting Stripe to work dampened those plans. And BigCartel was mostly for my international customers, since it uses Printful products. But since there was a less than enthusiastic response, I will keep all my storefronts, but make them specialty shops. Threadless will have the bulk of my products, BigCartel will be a seasonal exclusive shop, INPRNT will be my…prints, and Ko-fi will be my digital shop (though I’m toying with the idea of carrying my Printful items here).
September plans
Working on some new Wand-Slinger merch for the seasonal shop. Threadless will be getting an overhaul. The website will be wrapped up and relaunched.

[ID: Screenshots of the tweet thread are transcribed below. At the link to the tweet thread above, there are images in the thread with alt text.
“Okay WOW. Just WOW. My 19yo daughter found it. She found the labyrinthine magical bookstore that you thought only existed in stories. This place is WILD and clearly chock full of forbidden tomes that open portals to other worlds. Get cozy and come with me on a magical journey.
Small, innocuous storefront with poetic name: CHECK. (Spoiler: It's bigger on the inside)
Literal maze of books: CHECK.
You walk into the shop and at first it looks like there are just two rooms of books. Regular used bookstore. Cool! Also antique prints and curious tucked in any open space. Lovely. Warm happy feelings already. As with most magical things, wonders await those who look closer.
Some wonderful touches like this case of tiny miniature books.
Wait, what's this? Beyond a whimsical lighted case of rare children's books, an ACTUAL BOOK VAULT.
Wow, that's pretty cool! Check out the Lord of the Rings poster! But wait, what's that...? Does that sign say...SIX MORE ROOMS?!
This is when you realize you have to explore this place like some kind of RPG bookstore dungeon with all kinds of hidden nooks and crannies with cleverly tucked-away treasure boxes This is when you realize that you are going to be here for a long, long time.
It says six more rooms, but that's not right. You can't actually count the rooms. There are too many hallways and odd little niches full of books to even know what a room is anymore.
Rooms open into corridors open into rooms. Space has become meaningless as it expands far, FAR beyond what should be possible given the outside dimensions of the store.
"Still more," the little sign says. Yes. YES. By this point, you are lost. You don't ever want to be found again.
As you explore, you browse, of course. Some of the books are newer. Some are your favorite paperbacks from childhood. Others are 100 years old or more, just sitting there on the shelves. You can pick them up, handle them, breathe them in.
The books are clearly organized. There's a room of history and geography, a room of science fiction and fantasty and comics. Sometimes the system is clear and sometimes it isn't, but you know it's there.
And then there's the Old Books Room. Oh wow. Oh WOW. Books 100+ years old just sitting there on the shelf.
I craved this gorgeous 200 year old 4-volume set of the Canterbury Tales, but my budget was too tight to buy it.
I had to get SOMETHING. I wanted to support this magical place. My teens (completely spellbound as time slipped by) helped me look. Really we wanted a magical tome of ancient spells, but we found this beautiful 1883 illustrated edition of Gray's Elegy. Maybe this, my 19yo said.
We paged through, looking at the illustrations, wondering at holding a 130+ year old book in our hands. Then my daughter turned the page and we all froze. There was a bookmark there. A lovely, hand-painted bookmark, still touched between the pages of the book. I got CHILLS.
It had been there long enough to leave a permanent shadow on the facing page, a discoloration matching the bookmark. We turned more pages, reverentially, and found another one. Easter Souvenir, 1888, it said. I won't lie, my pulse was RACING.
Someone had put those bookmarks there 130 years ago, and there they remained, a little paused moment in time. It was surprisingly not-expensive, so we bought it. But first, we continued on, finding what might possibly be the final room at last.
But was it really the end? There was an archway in the back... A literal wall of books and a No Entry sign blocked the way. But there were STILL MORE books in the dim space beyond, and a lit space with yet more beyond that. I like to think the rooms of books went on forever.
This is the Lyrical Ballad Bookstore in Saratoga Springs, NY. A cursory Google search suggests that like many magical places, they don't have a web presence. But it's not hard to find—or at least, if it WANTS you to find it—so if you're in the area, go lose yourself in it!”]
Twitter thread by Melissa Caruso about a labyrinthine magical bookstore in Syracuse, NY. Link to the first tweet in the thread; most pictures have image descriptions! Now here are the screenshots of that thread:
And then a hero of the labyrinthine magical bookstores of the world put all the bookstores that people listed in the replies on a map! (Google Maps link)
