thinking about sam's first nap in the backseat of the impala after jess dies. running on empty for days trying to find clues about what happened to her, exhaustion and grief finally overtake him and he crashes out. dean's driving down a desolate highway just before dawn and looks back every now and then to check on sam, to see his face twitching and hear his sharp breaths and whimpers as the fire roars above over and over in his dreams. dean thinks about how many times he wished for this in the past four years, sam grabbing a few hours of sleep back there after a hunt or right by dean's side in the passenger seat, everything exactly where it should be. this is the punishment dean deserves for wanting it too much. he calls dad only to get his voicemail again
